Umpire hospitalized after being hit in head by relay throw
"Major league umpire Larry van over is being evaluated for a concussion and other injuries at a hospital after being struck in the head with a relay throw during Wednesday's game between the New York Yankees and the host Cleveland guardians. The 67 year old van over was knocked down by the throw from guardians all star second baseman Andres Jimenez, who wielded and fired toward the plate and hit van over positioned on the infield grass between second of the mound on the left side of the head. Major League Baseball said vanover was being checked for a head injury and quote other potential medical issues.

So the day began in the U.S. with a very hot reading on consumer inflation typically a negative for the equity market because the CPI data carries with at the notion of aggressive fed tightening in fact, markets right now in the wake of the CPI report are expecting another 150 basis points in fed tightening between now and the end of the year. And in fact, the S&P 500 at session lows was down about 2.4%, but then strangely, a dramatic reversal and its difficult to explain why, perhaps the market had already discounted a hot CPI number after that PPI report came in above forecast yesterday. Also, the technicals, I think, have to be considered as well because the S&P near session lows tested a very strong level of monthly support and perhaps that triggered some program buying, there may have also been a bit of short covering, a weaker dollar undoubtedly helped out as well with the Bloomberg dollar spot index dropping about a half of 1% and that was strange as well because yields across the curve were up. At the short end of two year that jumped 17 basis points to four 46, were trading four 47 now in Tokyo. The nikkei has hired by 2.4% that cost be better by one and a half percent in Sydney the ASX 200 is ahead more than one and a half percent. Since i don't know the the the saint last singular nicknames i hate single it aims to seattle pride or one of the teams from the wnba. Whatever the miami heat name a team after the weather just stupid anyway i. This came out of the blue. It was dumb. You didn't have to do it. You got rid of chief. Wahoo that was fine. It doesn't upset your average native american. They're not offended. Only white liberals upset by team nicknames. So there was pressure to to change and they changed it. And here's what. I don't understand if you have a chance to change your nickname. Wouldn't you go all in and come up with a great cool nickname that would sell lots of a memorabilia cheriton hats. Is anyone gonna rush out for shirt. Hats as guardians guardians. It's not even it's not even like bad ass. It's not even tough like the seattle cracking. That's cool and young people think that's cool although his crack and plural or singular even know. I think cracking singular cracking is a singular. If there's more than one crack the it's just cracking isn't it crack ins it's plural. Maybe mccracken's a great question at is plural anyway guardians. So i like looked into it a little bit. They're naming their team after statue on bridge the statues on a bridge into the city. And they're called the guardians of whatever the gate and that's the name of the team one of the most story franchises in sports. You have you have time. You have resources. You could come up with the best nicknames. And you pick guardians. Yeah i think washington's redskins answers better than that just have no nickname at least. It's kind of notable. But i would come up with a really cool nickname. Really cool logo on and say listen. This is going to be great for marketing reasons. Kids are gonna love it. What kid cares about a guardian. It sounds like a a courtesy should be era mascot guardian angel that little skunk that's in the guardians of the gate movie whatever galaxy yes raccoon or something like that. Maybe that will be your logo. But what the hell does guardians even have you seen the logo to its head with a tiara thing with the little like wings on it. Yeah it's so terrible so that's apparently taken from statue on a bridge really really inspirational but and it just seems so. I don't know in a nicknames. Out the most important thing in the world that i understand the redskins sounds slur. But indians doesn't sound like a slow and my answer to anybody who's gonna come after chiefs. A warriors of braves as a team. Franchises don't adopt nicknames that are disparaging that are demeaning they pick nicknames and logos to show strength that's why they picked the chiefs warriors to show strength and indians to these are warriors and great brave courageous fighters. And that's why they picked them not because they wanted to mock them. I'm sorry that's just not how it works. But whatever it'll it'll the chiefs will be next to the warriors or every high school every college do not going to be happy with just the redskins the indians they're gonna come after everybody sooner or later. Sometimes you know lifts from other people. But he's a very popular fall on twitter. He tweets out that the white house knew all about the confrontation before it happened to have exact tweet in front of you. Yeah just in the white house knew. About the tucker. Confrontation in the entire setup was planned out in advance per white house. Official planned out in advance with the white house is cooperation. That's incredible and here's what's going to happen. Tucker is probably still on vacation. You don't go to montana for days. Probably off the whole week. But he's going to have people on his side looking into this hard and trying to find out more about this this guy who's very proud himself. He tweeted a dan bailey. That oh if you get a chance to confront the worst person in the world you gotta take it. He was very proud of himself. We'll see how proud he is when these right wing trolls. How many more scrubs will get cut until because they're never going to get one hundred percent now and i'll tell you what i would probably if i were an nfl player and they said you gotta do this. There are absolutely risks associated with the vaccine and whether or not the risks outweigh the risks of getting covert. It's really tough to say. I think it also depends on your demo. How old you aren't all that stuff athletes. they're in their twenties. So there in one of the lowest risks bruce profiles out there and if they've had cova it it's like why wouldn't i mean i wouldn't get shot if i if i were not demo. What if you were backup tight and you might get cut right. So then there's that that yeah. Then there's the work home depot or make eight hundred thousand to play for the patriots. I think i might say a suck it up and get the shot and hope there are no hope it doesn't make my heart swell or don't have other side effects because i mean let's these are people if you tell most. Nfl players playing you know playing three or four seasons in the nfl will cost you. Five years off the end of your life. They would do they would do. They would say so. Instead of dying at age seventy-five but i get to play in the league. I get to make a few million. I get to walk around the rest of my life and say i played in the nfl. They would absolutely give you those years at the end of their life and go out there and play. And i'm not just talking about you know wes. Welker juliet guys. Who laid it out every play. They got leonard fournette to say that he's not taking the i've seen he's still think of doctors but he doesn't wanna take the vaccine which is a big deal. He's kind of a. He's he's sort of star not obviously brady's level but he's he's up there and he's on he's on the super bowl champs and he's saying he doesn't want the vaccine but brady has a choice to make when he's asked Obviously he could say yes if he took the vaccine he could say no. He didn't but we know what will happen if he says no so. I think there's really only two choices. If they say. Did you take the vaccine tom. He could say yes if he did. But i don't think he did. And the second choice is going to be some mumbo jumbo about personal choices and hippo laws and. he's talking to his doctor if he does not say flat out. Yes anything else is enough. I saw number. I saw a number of people saying. Oh it's a hip of violation to answer that it's not a hip a violation to ask or answer. That's a hippo violation. If someone finds your record. That's a stupidest excuse i heard all weekend. I know i know it's dumb. Obviously if you volunteer the information as with hip and you it's up to him. The onus is on him if the if the bucks released some personal medical information then you'd have a hippo violation. That's not going to happen. But i don't see how you can answer it if he hasn't had the vaccine and i don't think he has. "Never going to give up. I spent ten years in the minor leagues. And i've always understood that. This is a big and long process but the talent that i have speaks for itself. So your mercedes just confused them the heck out of everybody and retiring from baseball for like a salad twenty two hours earlier this week. I just i mean. I hope he's ok mentally. I know things get crazy out there but that was just a wild wild scene for mercedes over the course of the end of last week but chicago. They're in a good spot continuing to move forward. The cleveland indians there in second place only a game over five hundred now at forty nine and forty eight. They lost three out of four to the raise over the weekend. They'll now have an interleague match up here against the cardinals moving forward so the white sox certainly comfortable now in the american league central. Because you've got the tigers. Fine them the royals in the twins all at least thirteen games out so nothing really to fear in the american league central for the white sox on the american league west. You've got the astros. Their lead is starting to build comfortably. They have a major league best or second best. Gosh darn it. The dodgers just jumped them plus one forty four run differential for the astros. They swept the rangers over the weekend to feel good about themselves and now traveled to seattle to face a divisional foe. The second place oakland athletics fifty six and forty five. But they've lost three straights. They lost three out of four to the mariners so over the weekend so seattle creeping up there behind oakland china. So we're having some fun here on monday back to work back to the grindstone the nine to five so hopefully you guys are enjoying yourself listening to this get caught up to date with everything that happened and major league baseball over the past week in the american league east. The boston red sox remained in first place but only by one game over the tampa bay race boston. They were able to take three out of four against the yankees this weekend. Obviously that was a big series win after lose two out of three just recently to the yankees as well so boston kinda writes the ship there in the american league east there at sixty one and thirty nine overall. They're playing good baseball. And they got a series coming up with the toronto blue jays. So they'll welcome. Toronto to fenway park. And which will be another big match up between divisional foe the tampa bay rays like i mentioned one game back sixty and forty overall. They took three out of four. In cleveland over the weekend. And they'll now face the yankees so new york coming in struggling after a tough weekend against boston. Things don't get easier as they'll now face tampa bay the yankees fifty one and forty seven now nine games back in the american league east tough stretch for them over the weekend. They had won four straight before facing off against boston and now a tough series like i said against tampa bay next on the docket. The blue jays three games over five hundred nine and a half games out. They lost two out of three to the mets over the weekend. Especially if brian ends up with the mets. The yankees aren't gonna want to sit around and watch the mets. Get all that pub. And they're gonna make a move there on. Nelson cruz just went into the division. So i think anthony rizzo is a name to watch out for new york luke. Voight has been injured. So first base is an area of the and i think the pinstripes could ultimately pull that trigger. You also have zac davies a starting pitcher. Where does he ended up. It's tough to say. I mean a lot of teams need arms relievers. Craig kimbrel andrew fien. Where do those guys end up. The mets could be in consideration for those guys as well but ultimately craig kimbrel. I'll give you guys a name. I think he could end up with the la dodgers despite their need for the rotation. I mean again maybe you pair davies and and send both out to la but they just the starter market isn't that strong kyle gibson potentially could be an option but if you're looking to strengthen the back end of the bullpen kimbrough's as good as it gets. Obviously money is no object to the dodgers. He's under contract next year. Kenley jansen has had a strong season. he struggled a bit here late but he's been strong overall. He's going to be a free agent. After the off season kimbro could slide right into that closer spot. And i think he ends up with the dodgers out there. So those are the guys. I think that moved from the cubs and i think they sit on everybody else. Heavier by is being the biggest name that i think they hold onto and potentially try to even resign when it comes to the off season. Now joey gallo is another name. We'll talk about right. He's been rumored to be on the market. He's been talked about how he wants to stay in texas. So ultimately i mean gosh i i think texas moves him i get based on what he said. He wants to stay in texas. He's made it clear. He's not a free agent till after twenty twenty two so the choice to move him isn't as urgent. But i mean that right field. Porch and yankee stadium could persuade some guys to come to town. I mean would this guy. Hit fifty home runs and yankee stadium. He potentially could right. "High fifteen home runs in sixty six games. This season at aa. The twenty two year old is also walking at a career high rate of sixteen point nine percent of the time so He's a big guy hits for power. He strikes out a bit too much but his walk. Rate being at the level it is this year has certainly made things more palpable when it comes to looking at his future and projecting where he could end up maybe sowinski gets a taste of the major slater. This season if he keeps hitting he is in double a pittsburgh. Obviously in rebuild mode. So do they call him up to kind of get a taste a cup of coffee. See what's going on. I don't know it's probably a bit of a stretch but this kid is certainly showed potential throughout the course of his career and more power this year than any years past right hitting to sixty nine and already the sixteen home run so it's been a nice addition miliana's a twenty one year old reliever. He's got fifty nine strikeouts in thirty innings this year although he has been playing at the single-a level he's not facing the toughest of competition. He has been to high able so far this season so he struggled in high. He did well at low a. Amid a earlier this year he's only thrown four innings at the high level is a six point two three so a kid a little bit younger. When it comes to The totem pole and ultimately his future about when he could make his debut for the pirates with the other. Two guys certainly being a bit closer here. Pittsburgh is also sending an approximately one point. Four million dollars to the padres in the deal helping to cover frazier's contract throughout the remainder of the season. Frazier was a gold glove finalist. Obviously in all star this season he was the pirates second longest tenured player and he has been shipped out of town so the pirates fire sale continues. But what does this mean for the padres. I mean this was really an interesting addition to that. Yes he's a great player. Obviously the guy can hit. He can swing it. But where's he going to play defensively because at second base you already have some swiss army knives out there in san diego. They signed hussien. Kim this past off season over from korea. His primary position is second base. Yes he can be moved all over. You also have jake cronin worth the former rookie of the year. Runner-up last year in the national league. He continues to play good baseball. And then dirksen pro far who's also played second base rate field but surprisingly enough two names that we've come to kind of recognize with san diego will myers in eric hosmer right field and first base. They've been struggling a bit so far this year. So there could be some opportunity for some rotations or platoons to take place. I mean you gotta get frazier in the lineup. He's pretty much got to play every day. The guy sitting three thirty leads the majors in hits. He's been fantastic. So does he play second base every day. I don't think so. I mean you'll probably see him in right. Field left field third base for machado on a day off first base. If hosni today off. And then you kinda rotate in cronin worth pro-foreign kim as kind those secondary pieces to ultimately fill out your lineup. So did the san diego padres get better. Yes i think they did but ultimately how much of an improvement will it be. I think is yet to be determined just based on how they fill out the lineup card. And where these guys are playing every day so that's gonna be a tricky one for joyce out there the manager of the padres trying to figure out where all these pieces fit in but the padres they're going for it right third place in the nfl west five and a half out behind the giants right. Now it'll be fascinating to see ultimately how this plays out for that. Frazier is under control next year as well so he is not just a rental. He'll be back in a padres uniform. Twenty twenty two so their window certainly continues to be open and this isn't exactly a gopher broke. Move this year but next year as well. They got a lot better with the addition of nelson grew so high in bloom. The new general manager for boston after his time down there in tampa bay certainly again puts a little bit of pressure on high in bloom. He said we were expecting that. Teams are going to try to get better. Nelson cruz is one of the best hitters in the big leagues so they obviously improved. So the question is designed bloom respond. He remains in the market for a left handed hitter of their own. Who could play first base. I'd probably be wise to target some relievers there in boston as well. That match up with teams like houston chicago tampa because those are the teams. You're gonna be seen in the playoffs. So you gotta be able to match up with some of those lineups down the stretch right. I mean you're looking for a lefty to neutralize brandon. Low austin medals. Joey wendell even nelson cruz with tampa bay down the stretch. So look for a left handed armed a potentially end up in boston. As the pressure is now turned to higham bloom to respond to this edition by the race. And then you've got the white sox. Right i mean you would think oh. He's out of the division. This is probably a good thing for the white sox. Well not so much because they got that division wrapped up when it comes to ultimately winning it in advancing to the post season. The san diego padres making a move. The padres acquired one of the most sought after players on the market. Picking up second baseman. Adam frazier and another four player trade with the pittsburgh pirates. Pirates continue to sell the farm. They send all-star starter the hits leader and major league baseball out to san diego they do get fifty return coming back on their own rights. They got infielder. Outfielder topeka marcano. Outfielder jackson linski. And right hander. Mitchell me milliano head back their way. So mark marcano i believe is how you pronounce it. He looks to be one of the centerpieces coming back to pittsburgh although he struggled so far in the big leagues this year. He's got fifty plate appearances in the majors. This season during his time with san diego and he's sitting only a buck eighty two now again he did hit two seventy three as a twenty one year old at aaa which is young for that level of baseball so certainly an impressive feat for him hit into seventy-three there at that level but now that he's in the majors. Welcome to the bigwigs. He certainly seems to be struggling here. He struck out just one hundred one times one zero one in two hundred and fifty six games during the minor leagues while hitting two seventy eight firs career. He played three different spots along the infield. So it's a versatile player going back to pittsburgh similarly of what they're losing in frazier is contact skill. Certainly stand out. It's just a question of whether or not he'll be able to hit for power or steel enough basis to be an overall contributor when it comes to the pirates organization. He's got just six homers and four steals during his time in the minor leagues. This year again kind of been up and down aaa the big leagues six homers four steals in forty four minor league games. So again i mean marcano. He's a nice prospect. he's i tally can play all over. So it'll be kind of interesting to see ultimately which direction they go but Bigly experience head back to pittsburgh. They got themselves a high level kid who could be ready to play every day. He'll probably just pencil into frazier where he was right there. At the second base position next. W got jackson linski. "He's not saving runs on defense. He's not playing every day defensively but the twins able to get a nice hall and executives and sources throughout the industry. We're certainly surprised. Joe ryan who was kind of the key cog and the return for minnesota twenty five years old ryan generally viewed as a strong prospect. He was a seventh round. Pick back in two thousand. Eighteen major league baseball dot com had him ranked his tampa bay's number ten overall prospects. So minnesota was able to pull number ten out of tampa bay. Which again is pretty high for. A guy like nelson cruz. Who could only be there for about a half a year. He has seventy five strikeouts in fifty seven innings at triple eight this year. He is with the saint. Paul saints aaa affiliate now of the twins again. He was assigned there this year. In twenty nineteen he Bounced around started in single a. Then went to high a. then in double-leg he was Let's see here. Three three games in aa back in twenty nineteen a three three eighty. Ra didn't have a twenty twenty season of course so now at aaa having himself goodyear four and three three six three overall era number ten. So that's a nice pool for minnesota to get him coming back from tampa bay. They also added pitching passback drew strope mint and drew stroman will also be assigned to the aaa team there for the minnesota twins. It's back in two thousand nineteen. He played at two different levels. Rookie ball and high a before being advanced to aaa this year. So a big time jumped from hiatus aaa as well as he's been fantastic. He's got a five point zero six. Cra in high a ball back in twenty nineteen he was. Oh in two and five starts but this year at triple a. For his time with the raise he's twelve starts seven and two record three three nine. Era fifty eight innings so far this year. Sixty two strikeouts so he may not be our have quite the upside as joe ryan but he's been excellent in the rotation so the twins adding to high level minor league arms to their aaa squad and potentially needing that if things continue to not go well and they sell off these guys could potentially be in the show next year or the year after and then the fourth and final piece of the trade the third one coming back to minnesota was reliever calvin fodder hill report to Double a for the minnesota twins again this year for tampa bay. "There were quoted as people from cleveland or very big about watching out for one another having a name like this kind of shows were all looking out for each other. Another one said it's a name of strength it's a projection of strengthened power. A guardian is somebody that watches over and make sure that no harm befalls. You think they're important symbol said another. I think there's a deep connection to the city. it's a name that means a lot to clevelanders. And then finally. I feel like they're kind of representation of our industrial past. So you do have some pros. When it comes to the guardian some locals are very happy with the decision to become the guardians. But ultimately i'm looking at this from an outsider's perspective saying hey the team said how can we do this easy as possible. How can we change as little as possible. We're not gonna upset the richmond spiders. Nobody else's the guardians. It wasn't xfl team for one year after they folded due to the pandemic so they don't have to deal with any conversations around those particular styles of agreements. I don't know we'll see how it goes. But again the guardians. All right cool. Whatever not great. Not terrible maybe. You have a different opinion. The white sox the red sox the reds etc. Right when it comes to colors or you got characters in objects like the twins the padres the brewers the angels things like that so those were kind of the three categories that cleveland really began with and looking at the spiders. Well richmond's got the spider. So we'd have to work with them on brand and come to an agreement. And i i mean come on the detroit tigers you got the clemson. Tigers the lsu tigers. How many colleges are named after tigers. I mean it's just like really got the cardinals louisville cardinal. I mean. I don't know i'm thinking you can figure it out not too difficult. Lsu and clemson powerhouses when it comes to college. Athletics particularly college football and detroit figured it out with an agreement with them. And you're worried about a one aa football team a cpa affiliate the richmond. Spiders that you guys wouldn't be able to figure things out when it came to branding and logos and things along those lines. I mean basically just come out and say you don't want to put any effort into any of this and you'd actually be telling the truth in regards to. I'd be difficult kind of working through that no one you just. Don't wanna do anything when it comes to this style of agreements or negotiation on this particular level so I guess that's why they ruled that one out. But truly i just. I'm not buying that when it comes to cleveland and ultimately what's going on so next. They went with the guardians again. You've got the bridge. You got things like loyalty pride resiliency and being from cleveland. They're protective of our city. Talking about the fans they're protective of the land and everything about it. Those all become part of what guardians really started and evoke from emotional standpoint so they think it reflects those things in the energy coming from the city of cleveland and the people who are from cleveland and how they feel about this city. So it's i mean. Honestly i think it was the easiest decision when it comes to the rebranding because they've basically gone with the block g instead of the black sea and those are extremely Close in regards still mentally changes and then you have the fact that guardians. An indians are extremely close when it comes to the lettering on the front of the jersey you can basically keep the exact same style of print or style of jersey and reprinting the t shirts the jerseys the logos. Everything that goes on with guardians. Just being extremely close to the indian. So i get the indians. Were just like alka we do. This is easy as possible. Hey i got it. Let's pick a name. That's basically the same number of letters the same letters themselves as our teams and we can move from there so That's now what they're going to come out and say of course they posted as follow up video after the breakdown of the change was voiced by. "The internet was all over when it comes to reaction. Some people love the change. Other people think it's extremely. I guess dumb to really be blunt and honest about it but truly i i mean myself my personal feelings are i understand why the name itself was chosen and as we kind of go through this conversation. Some of the reasoning behind that name. I think may be a little bit of humbug to quote scrooge sets. It's christmas in july here over the weekend. I mean bah humbug when it comes to some of the reasoning as to why they picked the guardians but ultimately the guardians derive from the city's guardians of traffic and guardians of transportation statues the statues that stand on four pylons on either side of cleveland's hope memorial bridge which connects the eastern and western parts of the city. So of course there's your direct correlation. You got this the guardian statues when it comes to ultimately what they're putting their pillar on. But i mean again you hear the guardians in for better or worse here in twenty twenty one. Everybody goes right to the guardians of the galaxy. I talked to some guys at my job. And he said is this because of the marvel movie like. Why did they do this and everybody else. Posted the jeff's online. I am groot. That was following around but nothing to do with marvel nothing to do with chris brat guardians of the galaxy. It's all about the statues and of course kind of furthermore guardian cleveland. All of that good stuff right but is the top choice of the people of cleveland. Well an nbc affiliate w. kyc t. In cleveland ran themselves a poll and found that twenty seven point seven percent of respondents liked the name cleveland spiders. Which again was a previous baseball team. In the city of cleveland many moons ago and ultimately Some of the front office. In cleveland discussed about why they did not pick the spiders. And we'll get into those reasons here in just a moment but in second place in this poll was the cleveland rockers. Which of course would have celebrated the city being host to the rock and roll hall of fame and then in third place with fifteen point. Five percent of the vote just ahead of some stiff competition in Place number four. Which was the cleveland baseball team. So the guardians in a poll of local. Cleveland did not represent. The guardian says the runaway winner. In fact again they were in third place when it came to ultimately what the city of cleveland wanted a lot of people like the spiders in regards to naming it the team. It was the team a long time ago but again some people in the front office the reasons as to why they didn't pick the spiders. There were some pros and cons. According to the front office on the con side of things you had some teams that struggled on the field. The cleveland spiders were twenty in the one thirty four back in eighteen nineteen in regards to being a performance base nickname so the spiders and performance really didn't correlate the cleveland spiders. Were not that great. So the front office was like add enough. We want to go back to a name where we really struggled with that name itself. But what are the other reasons given was the fact that the spiders hasn't been a major league baseball team in a long time as well as the university of richmond. Spiders it was basically said that it would be difficult to work with agreements of others right so basically branding merchandising. They would have to come to agreements with richmond spiders and they really didn't wanna go through this particular process in basically i'm paraphrasing and reading between the lines here but ultimately again. I think that's hogwash. Humbug when it comes to that. Because i mean if you look at the breakdown right you've got three different types of names when it comes to professional teams..

Baseball team has rebranded and found themselves in new name that was quite controversial. According to the interim well when that controversial but mixed reviews. I guess you could say based on the feedback for the choice of the new team name. So we're gonna get into all of that type of stuff. It went down what the new name is breakdown for. You guys out there. Which i'm sure you're aware of the new name change but we'll go behind the scenes here just a little bit in talking about ultimately what's going on then we're going to get into some stuff on the field if you no hitters. Were flirted with this weekend. So we'll discuss those opportunities talk about them a little bit then in segment number two. We'll discuss. We had to trades. Take place so far coming up on the trade deadline. Of course you guys are aware of that.
