"As well. But let us discuss. Everyone loves playing the winners and losers game, But I do it all differently. I do well differently here. I have as a teacher. I have a report card book. I'd like to give report cards. Also what grades? He was the question. What grade? Did you give out the key trades in the MBA? Now there's on. Lee won a plus trade at the deadline. There's only one trade here that rises to the A plus level, and that's the Clippers. The Clippers get an A plus the bulls get I'm I give the Bulls of B. For their trade, the heat and the Celtics. I'm going. See, I'm going to see on that. And I'm gonna be the devil's advocate guy with the Nuggets. I'm not like the mainstream basketball media was not overly impressed with the Nuggets trace. I'll give that a D, and there's a bunch of APS. Better storing the losing locker room, the Orlando Magic Houston Rockets, New Orleans pelicans, the Toronto wrapped oars, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tech Giants Cut Commissions It Charges App Developers
"Too big tech companies made a rare concession to developers that do business with them. Operators of mobile phone apps have to pay to get their products seen by customers of apple and google critics say those big tech companies are so powerful. They are like nation states and the charges for mobile phone apps. We're like a tax. Now comes a tax cut apple and google financial supporters of npr which we cover like any companies and here bobby allen reports video game developer derek. More in who runs a company called flow play says. It's daunting to sell his video games for mobile phones. Because apple and google app stores take a big cut in a market where there's a thirty percent fee for just for the platform. This breaks down the pipe to the extent where there's almost nothing left for developers. If you have a smartphone chances are you have to use an app store controlled by apple or google to download stuff. The company say they need to collect a commission on what you buy to support the privacy and security of apps apple and google have defended these fees for more than a decade but now the companies have caved and slash them. You have sort of the reality of this and then you have the optics of this. What mandy nelson of the analytics firm sensory tower means is yes. This is a victory for small app developers who are set to benefit the most but for apple at the end of the day or google at the end of the day. What does is actually meaning to. Their bottom lines is not that substantial. But this was never just about money are coming right in the midst of some serious legal jeopardy for apple and google state and federal. Investigators are probing whether the company's broke the law by allegedly making it hard for rivals to compete with them apple ceo. Tim cook is even scheduled to testify about these fees in a trial next month. So the timing of the fee cuts. That is interesting. Says chris saggers. He's a law. Professor at cleveland state university who studies antitrust issues. I think it probably reflects the sense of the two companies that they're insignificant trouble trouble saker says that extending in all of branch to developers. Right now is not going to do much about. Two firms made an agreement to lower their prices. Only when they're under immense legal pressure doesn't make me think that this market has become competitive that everything is fine more at the sixty two person video game company flow play. Says we'll take it. I would say the really small guys earn ecstatic so much. So that morton says he's gonna make some new moves into mobile video game apps
Does Lebron James Deserve More MVP Awards?
"Let me tell you what. Lebron james is notorious for a other than skipping town. Go to another team other than that you know what. He's famous for taking his foot off the gas to a regular seasons when he went back to cleveland. You remember that he was like i don't mean to have the number one seed. I don't need to kill myself during the regular season. that's why he didn't win. Mvp's he undersea deserve to have more last year. Janas was the mvp unwanted convincingly and overwhelmingly. Why bernie 'cause the year before. John is wanted and lashio. Jonah's had better numbers than the year before. And the milwaukee bucks had the best record in the nba. Lebron james was really shocked because he had some false narrative going on that he was the mvp. Come on bernie has some humility. You don't have to do that. Politics will knock it you an. Mvp saying goes true. Greatness needs no self promotion. And we've talked about this probably at least once in every show we've done robin that is lebron is incredibly insecure about his legacy. If he's really the king what is he. Allow these things to get under his skin. He did it last. September when he lost out on the mvp then he says well. What really pisses me off. Allie got sixteen votes out of. That's what really pisses me up. Look if you want to continue to die in this hill lebron. You're going to continue to be seen as petty and al kuzina says the mvp's very political award. Yeah so is the mvp and major league baseball in the nfl. Probably the nhl and the heisman trophy right on down the line. Linda brown goes on to say. I don't sit around thinking about it or crying about it. That's what he just said that's all. He does time even when they won the championship last year and i gave him top credit. Lebron fan never will be better given top credit. Because the lakers are a franchise of eras you had to wilt air the jabbar air the magic the kobe and shaq era negative lebron air to win a championship and when he did the first thing he does say i want my damn respect do what he. What are you constantly begging for. What exactly is it. What happened in because you know why bernie it tells you all you need to know. He knows deep down. He's not the best player all time he knows his michael jordan. That's why it's always looking for these other things to add to his resume. That's why he he wants an mvp and you know what he sees now. He seems j. He sees james harden in brooklyn without a kevin durant and they've won fourteen out of fifteen or whatever the number is bernie and and he's looking going and when a went out to lakers stumbled he's not going to win the
Most Intriguing Trade Deadline Teams with Bobby Marks
"To the low post podcast on a friday morning where we are six days away from the trade deadline but some trades of already happened. People are acting early. Miami acquired trevor ariza and the bucks made a very interesting move to acquire. Pj tucker but there's much left to do even on boring trade deadline's are never actually boring. Lots of stuff happens to help. Us preview are insider are cap expert former longtime nets executive. The one and only bobby marks how are you. I'm good zach. How're you. And i already had my usually about a week out from the trade. I start having nightmares in the middle of the night. And i did my first nightmare last night. That woke me up about four o'clock that A fictitional trade of paul george in kyle lowry to the nets for curry irving and i woke up thinking like how in the heck is at work cap wise but the person in my dream that i talked to said. Hey don't worry about it. Works and i was like check my phone right off. The bat at four thirty in that did not happen. That is that is really sad. I had a dream last night. That four of my friends in their families were quarantining at a former. I hop that still had all the i hop like syrup and technology to be a functioning and they were having lots of pancakes in great meals and i wanted to go visit them. This is what. I was dreaming about six days before the train then. I woke up very hungry. Bunny dream will probably more likely to happen than cholera. Paul george and brooklyn possibly. What did it before we start. What did you think of the bucks acquiring j. tucker in a deal of of minor draft assets. I would say yeah. I mean it was creative. I thought that you know the milwaukee because it hard cap and based on the picks going in that drew holiday trade really had limited options to go out and do it but they go under the milwaukee goes under the Luxury tax gives them flexibility on a hard cap houston from their front office with the draft. Picks i don't think it would have been able to do it if They didn't have that two thousand twenty second from the hardened trade. That was the box. Essentially that they got from jarrett for From cleveland jared allen. But i had never really seen a team basically swapping a first for a second and then tr trade back that two thousand twenty second and you move back a year in the draft so it was creative from from both sides. And you'll see what brand. Pj tucker we get in milwaukee because he has not been. He hasn't been great this year at all and is it just the level of interest of a houston team that has taken on major water. And do we get to see the pj tucker from the previous years. But it gives milwaukee a lot of different options as far as lineups that they can. They can roll out there with him.

The Celtics's Defense Stunned by Lowly the Cavaliers
"Think quite a few of their problems stem from that slow start. So Marcus Smart had to end up taking most of the response offensive responsibilities throughout this one and you know, we often see how that goes. It got them back into it a little bit late, but it wasn't a recipe for success and I thought once you get behind on the offensive end you lose some of that defensive intensity. So both their issues on both sides before we tend to each other specifically for smart who I thought was so bad defensively in this one getting torched by those guards who can be great on some nights. I think those guys have potential sexton in Garland, but the same thing. Massive for you there that I don't see a little word or you know high-level guards for either of those guys their quality guards. They're inefficient. They shoot in the low 40s. They're 30% 3-point shooters that sometimes they can go off from that aspect, but the defense wasn't good enough tonight and a large part of it was because They were Jack and so many shots. They weren't moving offensively. They're missing a ton of shots. So they've given feed out for Cleveland again on transition and as they've done all season they gave up points in the paint a flash in the pan looked

Alcohol is only served the a restaurant or pub if you're getting a substantial meal with it during lockton so this clever guy ordered Sixty three pints twelve spoon. Montes which i think is a alleged champagne type drink and his substantial meal of one scotch. Egg that horrible eggs deep fried thing they have over in the uk guys is a good thing. Is it a good thing. I think it's a great thing you don't know how much that's got. Jan kid scotch and can probably soak up. I would say four to monte's and thirty five thirty five of those the rest of 'em he's gonna have to drink on his own but i don't think that qualifies as a substantial meal. Dan yeah no not at all. But i will say this first of all. There's a show. I could recommend it'll dovetail into what i must say Who called like the eaters guide to eating in the world or something like that. But it's very cool the first episode. It's all narrated by my rudolph all takes place in and around portland and saw about dining alone and And i didn't know that. That was a law until i saw that. Show that you have to serve food. At every savage print that serves alcohol. Which is why every strip club also sir and most of them are the most popular bars and some of them are the most popular eateries but to me that law kind of makes like it leads to so much more like. That's why you know we're going there for the state bites trust me. It's really good. Like i think it's such a kind of a cool law like i i i i actually i like it a little pointless but i like it nice now has the eagles fan i love carson wentz. And don't leave the team. But how would you feel if he was on the bears with nick foles interesting. I mean nick foles was. That's a great question. Nick foles was the best name to say as philly fan. Bella <Speech_Male> check is two and five <Speech_Male> and Bill Bell Jack isn't <Speech_Male> afraid to trade anybody. <Speech_Male> It would take <Speech_Male> a lot to get him. <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> Anyone has one more year <Speech_Male> of his contract I believe <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> I'm not saying it's GonNa <Speech_Male> Happen. "As standard put that, that's just not in their. Mo. So they're going to have to make junk plays in chunk throws down the field that that's the way they win this ball game. All right. Let me add statistically to the. Just woeful offensive numbers they are dead last on in third down offense, they're converting on thirty percent of their third downs. That's thirty second out of thirty, two teams in the NFL in. That's not going to be good enough either I'm GonNa Start with their defense. They have to stop the run this week. If they don't stop the run, they don't have a chance of winning this game Cleveland is second in the League in Russia offense behind Green Bay were Aaron. Jones is going crazy in these first two games, Nick Chubb legit power and speed combined a real star in terms of his talent. Kareem Hunt. Hunts averaging six point, nine yards per carry chubs averaging five point, eight yards per carry, and they played Baltimore in the opener. Really good defense that game got a little sideways after some turnovers it was ten six though in the first half late into the first half in that game. I. I. The intrigue for me in this game is we've seen the pass rush. We've seen the talent from young. We've seen the talent from pain and others along that defensive, front you loved KPL's performance on Sunday. I Really WanNa see what they are is a run stopping team. We had two totally different kinds of offenses, the eagles, miles, sanders, and they're going to throw it more and they did forty two times to seventeen runs the rusher that you're worried about in the Arizona game was the quarterback. This is Kevin Stefanski Shanahan you know Kerry. Kubiak. They're going to run it. They're to run play action off of it and by the Way in the tape in the in the all twenty stuff that I watched I thought Mayfield was really good and play action with the running game I'm not a mayfield fan but if Stansky can run the football like they want to do and and be able to boot him and play action him with with guys like Beckham Junior, and Jarvis Landry and Hooper and no Jew Co it Cetera they're going to be pretty good but. Stopping the run, this is a upfront, stop the run and limit them to something a lot less than basically over six and a half yards per carry combined they can't do that. then. You're asking the offense to stick to keep pace in. That's not possible. So the first real run defense test of the year against running backs, not a quarterback and the next week it's a whole other challenge with Jackson. But you got to stop the run on Sunday period. It's going to be a big challenge for them defensively. A. Heck of a job in. One thousand swoop stealing two of my redskins win if you would. So I'm going to add to both of those. We'll start with the run stuff. Oddly enough and it's two weeks into the season, the three teams leading the league in rushing yards per tempur. Systems. Shocker Matt with four..

If you can complete passes down the field, they have a chance to win the football game right now is average completion is four point four yards. Four. Point. Four. It's not good. There's only five lower in the league in those five drew brees is part of a he really has become one of those guys that throws short often. Oddly enough. Captain check down. or Kirk cousins. Is Really leading the League second to only driscoll. He's got he averages completions at nine point seven yards your hit. Some big ones in week one. By the way I'm GonNa let you finish your point but I wanted to interject this for all have tweeted me to say you really haven't talked too much about kirk cousins performance from last week. Have you seen D. Do you know that he had seven balls dropped in that game against the colts all I do chunk place. It's really interesting because I was listening to Zimmer. The other day and Zimmer wouldn't come out and really. You know put it on the quarterback at all and he's done it before easy. No, he has said he had Kirk Scott to be better and he didn't do it at all and I was wondering why and I went back you know to the all twenty two the game casts and quickly went through the condensed version seven big chunk balls right in the hands of guys like busy Johnson and. The IRV Smith and a couple of others and look they were terrible on defense again, they weren't very good offensively and he wasn't really good even when the balls were dropped but this seven chunk place would have changed the game for them. It would put him in the game. They were just flat out drops on perfectly thrown balls. The interceptions was a hail Mary at the end of the first half and the other one was a deflection off what we really should have been caught ball. But anyway, no, it was. It was behind a little bit. It was thrown into double coverage I. Mean it should want those to be incompletions though. agreed but anyway look, he hasn't been. He hasn't been good enough and he they're not going to be a good team be unless he really steps it up because they stink defensively right now but anyway I digress, yeah, he is. He's got a a significantly high number. In that stack category, continue Back to this down the ball, thing of get to this when we get to Cleveland is wealth. Baker Mayfield is eight.

"Defensive and Lyle L. Szeto who weighed about two hundred and fifty pounds literally runs and dives on top of the crowd. They Listrik like at a concert while the rest of the browns sneaky and they were like it was electric. He's a hero. Yeah the superstar so they were basically like the rolling stones anyway. The point is browns. Fans are the greatest honors. Yeah and we truly are because we've been tested and proven ourselves to stay loyal. Despite so after the cardiac kids we suffered through in era of great teams in the nineteen eighties. That were cursed with some heartbreaking playoff losses. You could imagine they are named Red Ray. The drive and the fumble. Oh my just real quick recap on. They have names. That's how to remain. I correct they are like not to be forgotten. So Red Right. Eighty-eight is a last minute. Loss raiders in the nineteen eighty-one where we had the opportunity to take the lead with field goal but the coach ought to run a passing same instead intercepted the wall and it was intercepted and the picked it off. Oh that's just stupid. But despite that rough loss to start the decade we continue to be good that whole decade it was like another super fun super talented team. The quarterback Bernie Kosar Wide Receiver Webster Slaughter Tight End Ozzie. Newsome running backs. Kevin mackin earnest. Byner and linebacker Bob Golick. Who was a Cleveland Native before there was Lebron? There was Bob Golick so fans were in so. This team is really good and twice. We need it after that sad loss to Oakland to the AFC championship game for those of you. Who Don't know that's the game right before the Super Bowl. Yeah so mind. You get into the soupy. Can't we won four championships before the Super Bowl was the thing and haven't yet one so in the Nineteen eighty-six AFC championship game the draft Mark Sheriff's basically Denver Broncos quarterback John elway in the final minutes of the game led the team too improbable ninety or drive to be us in overtime? Go Away five minutes and six seconds to complete the drive of the game. This devastating the very next year in one thousand nine hundred seven. We make it all the way back to the AFC championship game. Only this time of winning spiner recover at all star running back earnest. Byner fumbled the ball under one yard. Line right before he was about to score to take the lead with one minute left in the game handing victory byner head first and goal and lost the ball. You miss them in so young when this stuff was going. So did your dad you about this as you were getting older you were Rachel. I'm older than you. I give you credit. I'm saying you were a baby when these were happening. No I was a teenager until now I was young for these two losses. I like remember eating. Seven layer dip in pure utter devastation. I was ten and eleven respectively so I mean it. You know I remember these year. It's scarred you yeah but despite all these scars deep deep scars on our heart we fans we stick by our guys. Okay an example as we're going through these horrifying losses in the eighties. The browns Star cornerback at the time Hanford. Dixon nicknamed the defense. The Dogs are defense was awesome. The dogs is a reference to like him thinking of the defenses dog chasing around the offense which he thought of his cats and they were just like a hardcore defense that just like crushed it and not only did he name the defense the dogs but they put up a sign in the bleacher section called the dog pound and the fans like wholeheartedly adopted it and so now to this day the bleacher section. At Cleveland Stadium is known as the dog pound. These guys took it to heart. They were dog. Noses dog masks bone shape how would like throw bones on the field amazing? Oh my God well I see you see them. Every single broadcast like they're out amazing. They've got like face paint. Yes viggo go hard. So that's my team. And that's my teams fans and now you're team and that brings us to the mid nineties so in the nineteen ninety four season the browns finished with a really good record of eleven and five and one first playoff game in five years under head coach. Bill Belichick a name. You might recognize hall of fame coach and winter. Go Billy yes winner. Multiple Super Bowls widely considered to be one of the all time greats despite some cheating allegations. But that's a different episode greatest cheater. Rachel has no love lost for bill. Belichick I think no. I don't sorry anyway. We were really good looking good. And when we're going into next season in one thousand nine hundred. Five people were like Oh. This team could finally be the woman wins the superbowl so it was an exciting time yet again. Midway through this we're doing all right and then art modell the owner that we talked about earlier the owner of the browns nineteen sixty one people like him. Yeah meets with team. One morning business as usual But that night out of nowhere art modell goes down to Baltimore which is weird and he makes a speech at Camden yards and announces. Something that shook Cleveland and the Browns fans to their core. Wow but we're going to have to go to break..

"With the panic and his Cleveland was working this. The Nation through that financial panic. He had a more personal crisis brewing. He was soon to be a father. Although that was not publicly known at the time and was not considered a crisis but his wife Francis was two months pregnant when president. Cleveland took his second oath of office. But the thing that would become more pressing with something that the president discovered eleven days after that April. Twenty third statement about repealing. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act on May fifth 1893. He noticed a rough spot on the roof of his mouth but really deep in the midst of running a country that was in a precarious state. He did not do anything about this. Initially but over the next six weeks that rough spot turned into a lump that got bigger reportedly. The president was often up at night because of it although whether that was from pain or from simply worrying about the situation is a little bit of an issue of speculation he actually had his wife Francis look at it and she was as she put it alarmed when I saw it and so she made the decision that they had to get a doctor to look at it immediately. The doctor was their regular physician. Dr Joseph Decatur Bryant. Dr Bryant was their family physician but he also specialized in oral tumors. So it makes sense that Francis would reach outside the government's presidential resources and get him involved. Francis wrote to Dr Bryant on June. Eighteenth tell him that. There was some sort of problem on the roof of her husband's mouth and that she would like to speak with the doctor. The next day Francis had errands on the nineteenth ticketed Jersey City and she asked for a meeting there in their brief visit. She told Dr Bryant the details of this gross appearance and also that she was quite worried about it the meeting ended with Bryant planning a trip to Washington. Dc to examine the president. Yeah there are actually some theories that probably When Grover Cleveland took office that he would have asked Bryant because he was a trusted family friend and had been their family doctor to become the presidential doctor but Bryant. Didn't we've has practice in New York But there was even while Francis was meeting with Dr Bryant. Another doctor on the case. The President's dentist had seen the lesion and so he contacted the president's doctor about it. That physician was Dr Robert M O'Reilly and so he had examined the president's mouth and he found that growth quite worrying as well. He wanted to have tissue from the growth tested. But without anyone knowing that the sample had come from the president's person so he took a scraping and he sent it as an anonymous sample to an army lab. While the president's name was not on the sample it did have a note that it was an incredibly important specimen. And that led pathologist Dr William Welsh to suspect that it was a sample of grover Cleveland's tissue. That probably made it a lot more unpleasant for him to come to the conclusion at the end of this examination that the sample was from a malignant tumor and as that lab examination was happening of the tissue. Dr Bryant had arrived in Washington and had seen President Cleveland himself. He described the tumor to his patient as quote a bad-looking tenant and he told him that he should have it removed and very soon so of course this was terrible news and not just because of the president had a frightening cancerous growth that could jeopardize his health or maybe his life also because cancer was really a PR nightmare. At this point. People wouldn't even say the word cancer if they could avoid it in any way they would use just to keep the name out of their mouths. This was of course almost a hundred and thirty years ago. The medical establishments understanding of cancer was a lot less robust than it is today and they were not nearly as many treatment options saying someone had cancer at the time was almost like saying they were already dead. Society was just downright phobic about it and there was serious stigma around it so for a president and one only just a few months into his term to have cancer was the kind of news that could cause a panic in the midst of an already existing financial panic political adversaries. And even those with whom the president had tentative ally. Ship could use that kind of information against him and his effort to repeal the Sherman silver purchase act could be completely ruined if people thought that he was in a weakened physical state. Dr Bryant thought the best course of treatment for president. Cleveland was surgery. He and Dr O'reilly discussed the matter and then met with the president and the President Secretary of Warren close friend. That was Dan Lamont. This quartet of men agreed right off the bat that the whole matter had to be kept entirely under wraps they were planning to do this surgery though so keeping it. Secret was a really complicated proposal. They had to perform the procedure somewhere. Very very private that automatically meant not hospital and it had to be done entirely with incisions inside the president's mouth so that no external scars would give the truth away this also meant and grover. Cleveland was apparently adamant about this. They could not shave his moustache And while Cleveland's summer home in Massachusetts was introduced as a possible location for the surgery. It was pretty quickly dismissed because the press was often lurking nearby especially if they knew the president was there eventually. The president introduced a very novel possibility he could have the surgery onboard the Oneida a yacht owned by his friend Elias Benedict and that the two too often taken out for fishing trips. The use of a boat was of course super risky. But because Cleveland had been on that boat many times it would arouse zero suspicions for him to take a trip aboard it and while the doctors pressed for an immediate surgery. The president needed time to put some things in order before he could do it. This meeting took place on June twenty third and the President agreed that he would be ready on July. First in the meantime Dr Riley monitored his health and Dr Bryant put together a trustworthy surgical team. Dan Lamont made sure all the president's arrangements in Washington were taken care of and Grover Cleveland. We should mention was not a person who is in otherwise great health. When this whole plan was forming. He had a taste for really rich food which has caused him to develop gout and he drank quite a bit and he smoked That initial rough spot. That he felt was in the place for the end of his cigar usually sat in his mouse. He also likely had high blood pressure so anesthesia. Let alone going through a surgery and at this point. Remember like we're in the ether phase. we'll talk about that in a little bit and there. Was this very real possibility. That a more serious situation might reveal itself once that surgery was underway if the growth was more expansive than had been apparent upon examination. So this whole thing was a significant risk and the worst case scenario was that the president would die. Bryant immediately reached out to a colleague named Dr William Williams keen telling him that he wished to speak to him about a very important but private matter in a scene. That would be right at home in a spy thriller keen and Bryant a few days later on the deck of an empty fairy Bryant was totally straightforward and told keen about the president's need for surgery that the surgery had to happen in secret on a yacht and that he wanted keen to be on the surgical team keen was exactly the man you would want for this job a very well respected surgeon with an impeccable reputation who had been leading the medical field in the very new concept of brain surgery. Pain DIDN'T VOTE FOR GROVER CLEVELAND. But he had a great respect for the office and after a moment of thought on the matter he agreed to participate. There was as we said. Just a huge risk for the president but for a surgeon like keen at the top of his profession. There was also a great deal of risk if something went wrong his reputation which had been built over years of work and study would probably just crumble around him. Bryant recruited additional surgeons to be part of the Secret Presidential Surgery Team Dr Edward Janeway. Who is a professor of surgery at Bellevue Hospital? Medical College Dentists Doctor Ferdinand Hasbrouck who had an advanced knowledge of anesthesia as it existed at the time and then Brian Assistant Dr John Erdman. The plan was that Bryant would be the lead surgeon with keen and Erdman assisting Dr Hasbrouck would handle any tooth extractions that would need to be performed and would also manage anesthesia. Along with Dr O'Reilly and Dr Janeway would be in charge of monitoring the patient throughout Bryant also made all preparations for the yacht to be ready for this mission. The yacht had a saloon and it was decided that it would be transformed into an operating room. The furniture was removed and the space was disinfected at share was brought in for the president to sit in throughout the procedure special equipment and deliveries were explained away by Dr Bryant to the ship's crew. They were told. The president was going to have a tooth extraction on board and because the crew were accustomed to the president both being there and needing various special arrangements. They seem to accept this explanation. So coming up we're GONNA talk about the surgery itself and we'll get into that after we. I take a quick break in here from the sponsors keeps stuff..

"Sluggers magic of the one thousand nine hundred ninety five Indians written by Zack. Meisel of the athletic who joins us? Now ZAC thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me Jeremy. All right so you know. I already kind of Gave Away You know The ending they don't win. They lose the braves that great braves team that only won one world series despite winning like forty five consecutive division championships What's so fascinating about the one thousand nine hundred five Indians other than this remarkable collection of personalities and talents or maybe that is the most interesting thing I should say well You hinted at it because it was really a perfect storm of a team that had been built from the ground up years in advance. And then this franchise moves into this beautiful new BALLPARK IN DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND. And the timing could not have been more perfect where you have a team emerging from this forty year slumber where they were the dregs of the league they were. They reached such a low point that they had a famous movie made after them. Of course so that was chariots of fire right. That was the case. Exactly you know your movies tres. The timing was perfect and you had a city that was so desperate and so hungry for something to get behind and not only. Do they have a winning team? But the fashion in which they want with all these walkup victories and come from behind wins and yeah the personalities where you had an imposing slugger Albert Belle colorful characters like Omar vizquel and Kenny. Lofton savvy veterans. Who had been around the block? It was just the perfect mix for a city that was just waiting and waiting and waiting for exactly that I mean and and this this lineup I mean I'm looking at it now. I mean Manny Ramirez in ninety five when he's twenty three hitting thirty one home runs You've got as you mentioned Albert Bell. Fifty that year with one hundred twenty. Six runs batted in Jim. Thome e would end up being a six hundred homerun player and Kenny. Lofton and Omar Vizquel and Carlos by era. And you've got Eddie. Murray a another future hall of Famer Dave Winfield another future hall of Famer all these guys making contribution some larger than others. Obviously this incredibly exciting team. Would it mean in Cleveland to have a team after fifty years almost fifty years since its last World Series Championship in Nineteen Forty Eight? That team what did it mean to Cleveland. Have a team like this around. Well there's no better way to explain it then to say that two days after the Indians lost game six and the braves celebrated in Atlanta. The Indians returned to downtown Cleveland. For a celebration with tens of thousands of fans packing the streets and climbing onto traffic lights and lampposts in downtown Cleveland. And they lost but it meant so much to that city to finally have something some thread to get them through the summer and and the early part of fall Which they had waited so long for that and you know it came in. This is nineteen ninety five and the browns left in nineteen ninety five so it was it really was the start of something to and I think of course fans were disappointed in the end result but it had been so long and really most of the people who experienced that ninety five team not around the last time the made the postseason nineteen fifty four. When they didn't win a postseason game they were swept in the world series so it has been since nineteen forty eight since they had a playoff run. So that's forty seven years. Nobody remembered that so. This was the first time they could remember having something to keep them. Invested for six months and so even with the end result. I think there was an appreciation for what that lineup accomplished. Boulevard famers or would be all of famers should be all famers and a pitching staff. That was pretty underrated too. They just had all of the elements. And it's just really galvanized Cleveland. I gotTA admit And we're figuring Zack. Meisel about his new book. Cleveland rocked precise sluggers and magic of the nineteen ninety-five Indians. And I know I should know this. I mean I was covering baseball on a daily basis. I totally forgot to Orel. Hershiser won sixteen games for them. I mean I didn't really. I mean I remember. Nagy and I remember Dennis Martinez Martinez won twelve yet a very good year for them Nagy was. This is a typical kind of Charles. Nagy sixteen and six with a four five five But hershiser who is thirty six went sixteen and six with a three point eight seven. Era IN JOSE. Mesa had forty six saves with a one point one three era. Yeah what you think about you. Think about the hitters on those teams but there there was some effective pitching going on as well as they won one hundred games. Yeah no one ever recognizes the fact that they led the American league in era and they were really good at preventing walks and hits. And you didn't have much traffic on the basis and the hitters would tell the pitchers just just hold them. You don't need to throw a shutout just limit them to a few runs and let Albert Belle and Jim thome and Manny Ramirez. Kenny Lofton Eddie. Murray do their thing. Unbelievable so yeah you can see if you look at the ages of the roster. It's really interesting because most of the roster was was bill from within. They drafted well. They traded well So you had young hitters in that lineup like told me Ramirez and then they when they knew that it was time to to hit the gas pedal. That's when they went out and they signed Dennis Martinez even though he was forty years old. They signed. Eddie Murray. Who was nearing the end of his career and then right before the ninety five season they signed. Orel Hershiser to be that. If the missing coggin that rotation and hershiser ended up having a fantastic season he was the MVP of the LCS against America. So you know it's funny when I think about the Indians from the mid nineties there was that you know I. It meant so much as well. Because there'd be no world series ninety four. We have mentioned that so it was kind of this unique circumstance to people were hungrier for World Series. And perhaps they were typically because what happened ninety four but two years later in ninety seven they get to game seven Against the MARLINS and and they they lose that one in when I think of the Indians of the ninety s There's so much talent but they don't quite get over the top. What what's what's the team. That means more in the heart hearts and minds of people from Cleveland. The ninety five team or the ninety-seven team. Yeah it it's the ninety five team for a couple of reasons number one. They hadn't disappointed anybody yet. So that's what made that summer. So special is it was all new and fresh and IT WAS FOREIGN TO CLEVELAND. Fans who were used to the team being in the basement by June first so that was one part of it. I think that's why people were more accepting of the end result even though they weren't happy with it obviously But in ninety seven that team didn't click until late August. They were treading water. They didn't have much of a division lead. In fact they were trailing the white sox for a while and then they played a little better down the stretch. I think they want to eighty seven games kind of limped into the playoffs and just caught fire at the right time. Had some some clutch hits at some key moments in October to get to the world series but again that's by that point you they lose ninety five in the World Series Ninety six. It was a first round exit so there was more of a sense of urgency and I think fans were less forgiving especially when they had the lead in the ninth inning in game. Seven in Miami and couldn't shut the door. I gotTa tell you before before we let you go. Is that when I think about Albert Bell and he was this tremendous talents Enigmatic I think is a fair way of describing him maybe maybe a charitable way of describing him when he became a free agent and he eventually goes to Baltimore. I remember that off season trying the producers working with Willie Wind. I were trying to get an interview with him and dealing with his brother. His late brother Terry yet and and Terry Terry finally I can't remember he I think he told he told our producer. Willie Wind Bam. We were telling him eight. Look you've got to trust. This could be a fair story. We're not out to get Albert Bell. We want an interview with him. You know Blah Blah. He said No. You don't ever said I don't want a fair story. I want a good story. Kim thought that kind of said something. It wasn't just about Albert Bell but about the dealings between athletes and reporters generally speaking what what was up with Albert Bell. Where do we begin? Do you have a few hours? And we don't have that much time. But you're an expert on the subject the fascinating thing to me maybe the most compelling nugget during the research and interview process for the book was how close they were to cutting ties with him before he ever reached the major leagues just because they were sick of dealing with the antics whether he was frustrated with reporters or taking out his his anger. From what happened in the batter's box on a clubhouse bathroom sink or the dinner table or the Thermostat it was always something and you know that some of the people in the front office said. Hey It's time we have to cut ties and there were other people who gave some push back and said disguise are only prospect. We can't cut ties with him now. He's he's the future. There's no future at all. So it's it's amazing to imagine that lineup without him. Certainly you have some good hitters. But I don't think you're striking fear into the opposing pitchers like you do when when you have that menacing glares staring back at you in the batter's box who was always hitting fourth for the Indians I it he was. He really was the heartbeat of ninety five team It was just such a studious. Hitter kept diligent notes about every single pitcher every single at that still has them to this day and no you didn't want to model your your off the field routines necessarily after him But everything he did to prepare for games. You can see how that rubbed off on. Young Henry told me and Ramirez and it paid dividends for the Indians immediately ended. The long-term Zach maizels new book. Is Cleveland Rock? The precise sluggers magic of the nineteen ninety five Indians and Zach covers the Indians for the athletic previously covered the team for Cleveland Dot Com and MLB. And you're you're about thirty years old. Yes exactly so you only five. What did you have any memories? Personal Memories of this team is a five year old at the time. Yes that. That's what made me Kinda jump at. The idea is my very first memory of watching. Sports is what I remember exactly where I was watching game six of the world series so I remember David Justice hitting the home run which was the only run in that game. The braves winning one. Nothing and You know I it was when you're a kid growing up in Cleveland in the nineties and you played baseball. You Love Baseball. That's there's no better introduction to the sport and watching that team so it doesn't matter to you that they ended up merely as runners-up this is this is this is your team forever. I mean it's it really was just the perfect Just had every element you could ever want and you think about especially where we're at now where we don't have sports and we're all trying to cling to anything we can that resembles competition. It really hits home to me. Just how important baseball has been not just in my life but in plenty of people especially people in Cleveland who grew up with those nineties Indians and those teams got so close but couldn't get over the Hump and just how baseball is such a constant and every day in the summer you go to work you come home. There's a game on you know it's the weekend and it's nice out. You can listen to the game while doing something outside. You can go down to the ballpark. So it's that ninety. Five team was the perfect example of what it means when you are invested. Got That that next game every single day. There's some new results that you can process and to not have that right now I kinda. It's furthers that point a little bit more. Those Indians teams. Were Fun to watch. They were exciting to cover as well. I remember covering current them in the ninety seven. Lcs I guess but it was a little bit of a different team at that point anyway Zach it's terrific of you to spend this time with us and share your memories and his New Book Zach Muzzles New Book as I said is Cleveland Rock the personality sluggers and magic of the nineteen ninety five Indians. What a collection of talent and character Zach. Thanks so much for joining us here on the sporting life you got Jeremy. Thanks so much. I have a ton of Cleveland Browns, swagger outfits, or jerseys hats, everything because I'm a real Cleveland Browns fan, right? Go browns. So we were asked today in our in our meet-and-greet, which we appreciate you guess paying all that ridiculous money. To see us. And we're glad you came through the line as you notice. We were having we're kind of hustled to him because we are not of the millennial generation of pro wrestler people in other words. Some of our peers could have done that line about thirty minutes and may have never looked up after ass. We to have conversation we'd like to have interaction 'cause we were sick. What you are. And who you are. And the fact that game ceus. So that's how we look real simple cut and dried crazy stuff, but a lot of you ask you we're going to gain tomorrow. And of course, we are. And we are welcomed at the Browns can't the facility yesterday. And I tweeted out I'd never been treated any better by any NFL team for sure and I did NFL football season. That I was around camp yesterday. So it was their class organization. You can feel positively in that in that building. Some of you won't get that are probably get that opportunity through that facility in this in. That regard is we had the access yesterday. And and that's important of its way. It is little let me share with the fact that if you're a real Cleveland Brown fan, you should feel good about the the climate in the room yearly should their mystic. They don't have anything about this win tomorrow. Tomorrow's our day. It also has let's win now. So that's where they're on their net. Pay. So you're a good shape, and I'm Rams fan. Of course, there's a little quarterback. They're number six. So we we had homecoming yesterday, but it's going to be here today. And and I'm I'm Jerry's biggest Cleveland fan. I know if I knew that when we started we were riding together Indians the Browns little Bron James caz. Cares about a socialite. And let me let me explain. Some of the people that may not know why that is. But you gotta go way back the we'll get in the way back machine here for a second. When I was a kid born in Memphis, Ecorse, and Memphis, Tennessee. But when I was like seven years old my dad got transferred with the job work. We were the Ford Motor Company, and they used to have the big assembly plant in Memphis and something happened on a dispute over the land or whatever. But anyway, when I was seven years old they transferred or they moved and built a big assembly plant out between. Vermilion and Lorraine if you're familiar with that it's now it's been closed down. But anyway back in the day. They gave anybody down in Memphis the opportunity if they want to keep your job, you could transfer pick up your family and move up to a high. Oh, so that's what we wound up doing in like nineteen. Fifty seven. Long time ago ninety fifty seven something like that. So anyway, we moved here. And we I settled in a little there was a big influx of people coming from Memphis to keep their jobs, and there was a housing shortage. So the only place that we could find to move into at the time was in a little town cover million. How many people remain no vermillion, and we it was into dead of winter. And the only place we could find live was a little beach front cottage that was ordinarily rented out just. Yeah. When I say. When I say beachfront our little cottage was right here about where the back of the room is was Lake Erie..

"Is incredibly valuable and you're going to get the undefeated team widely recognized right now as the best in football on their home turf. You not only take their crowd away. You're in position to take their game away, and you exercise that level of insubordination. I mean, you gotta be kidding me is an absolute travesty on his part. And it's inexcusable you should cut him immediately. Or at least spend them at least suspend them. Maybe you don't wanna cut up because you don't have anything to replace him. And you don't wanna go someplace else where he can hurt. You. I got that part. But dammit, sit them down suspend them. Let them sit on the sidelines in uniform don't allow them to play for you do something to you. Can't let them get away with that. He basically said screw the whole team. All y'all. Kick rocks. I'm upset I don't give a damn what jar want. Cat. That's not a winner. That's not even somebody trying to win. I mean, hell legitimate argument could be at not that. I believe this for one second because I saw his contrition on the bench and one avenue, and I don't believe for one second. But I'm just saying when you act that kind of way I'm wondering why people in the queues for fumbling on purpose? It eight say ESPN, it's inundate seven to nine three seven seven six got some other breaking news for y'all that just came down to pike apparently. Hugh Jackson was not the only person that was fired this morning by the Cleveland Browns. Apparently. Offensive coordinator. Todd Haley who I just finished talking about. He's about to be far too. I'm sorry. He is fired. They got the ninth ranked Russian attack but the twenty four th ranked offense because the twenty four and points of point scored their twenty fourth in yards are registered twenty fourth in terms of their passing attack. Although they've got the ninth Russian attack. He's five two. I'm wondering whether or not Greg Williams defensive coordinator is going to be next their twenty four th defensively. Twenty eight yards allowed twenty six against the pass twenty eighth against the run if Todd Haley he's going to Hugh Jackson's gone, I'm wondering whether or not Greg Williams is going to be gone. I'm just wondering right now. It is what it is Cleveland Browns head coach Hugh Jackson offense coordinator, Todd Haley who couldn't get on the same page when it came to Baker Mayfield have both been fired. You know, what that says to me John now everybody there's about Baker Mayfield. They can fill the number one overall pick your quarterback, evidently, they're not pleased with the development, and they're blaming both of them, especially if Greg Williams remains if Greg warriors remains then that means this is about Todd Haley and Hugh Jackson both failing endorse these is to develop Baker Mayfield accordingly. He was pretty beat up yesterday by the Steelers, by the way, by the way when you're hiring..
