Ohio State handles Clemson in college football semifinal

"Playoff has just been It's Hell of a second game, especially and so joining us to talk about all of it from college football news dot com Pete Few tack, Pete. Welcome to the show going Well, how's it God for you? I mean, you sit here. You're watching this full day of college football games and Ohio State is just obliterating Clemson. They're taking a victory. Kneel as we speak. Like what happened today, Pete? I think has been an awful bull season. It just every games. Bad. Just looked this morning was fun. It's after this one. Actually, the Georgia uh, Cincinnati game that was entertaining and good. But everything else has been a blowout or ugly. It's just been a bad, miserable bowl season. But okay, we just got something quirky here where it's crazy to think that You know, it's Ohio State. It's you know, one of the biggest bad boys on the block and less Yet it feels kind of fresh that it's Ohio State. Alabama and not Clemson, Alabama. It's you know, send it kind of feels like okay, that's up the difference. So that seems like it could be a little bit more fun. I think then Okay comes tell them again. Throw it on the pile. Well, yes. So for the final score of this game now is it just officially went final. It's 49 to 28. I mean, Justin Fields blew up to that. Like, how did Clemson get beat up this badly, though? Uh, I always want to see hindsight. So 2020 and all the hard part about this college football season is you're really didn't have anything else to compare it to. Because part of the problem is nobody played nonconference individuals. Except for maybe, you know, maybe a Sunbelt person Big 12 game here later outside. Game there, but there really weren't any other comp games. So all you're seeing is a T C teams playing other 80 fie team that can be claimed at the Big 10, so it's sort of hard to kind of figure out who's really just that awesome. And look, you know they that was just a phenomenal performance file. How state laser focused, And it was the big question mark coming into this game because we had seen Ohio State this year. They were missing 22 guys. The Big 10 Championship, didn't have most of their offensive lines for the last couple of games of the regular season. This was not the normal Ohio State team that was supposed to be, And so the question Mark is okay. You know what's gonna happen when that gets all together, and it gets good. Be that team and obviously turned up pretty good. Well, yes. Oh, they dominate Clemson. Now they're going to the national championship game. And for this point with Ohio State now we can put all of the they should have been the conference championship and changing the rules like we could put all that stuff to bed now, right? Well, yeah. I mean, they still probably shouldn't have done all that. But okay, it's look, However, they got here they got here. You know all that's the other stuff, you know, merely just getting the season going. The entire reason they played the big 10 season really was kind of money, but also that you know how state wanted toe get in this thing again. You know, kind of get the redemption for last year's disaster. When they lost the Clemson. They felt like they had everything there. They should have won the game. They had a great team. Now. It keeps getting lost in the narrative. They bumped. They probably loose ls you but that's not really how this whole thing worked out. And now they just came up with a new epic performance. That was an ultra motivated, great team, and it all just worked well for him, And so for Justin feels like there's a lot of speculation about fields and how good he was. The game against Northwestern comes out today. He's got 385 yards and six touchdowns, so for him to have this kind of performance. What does that do for the draft stock? Help, you know, obviously, obviously helps Whatever. Lawrence is still the one of one's. That's that doesn't change. He's used the Jacksonville Jaguar number one overall pick. No question about it. I still think that Zack Wilson's gonna end up being the second quarterback. He's He's just got kind of all the basics. Terry. The mechanics are flawless. Uh, if it's not just infield, Justin Field was probably second. After all this And at worst third. Certainly he's not going to drop very far. If he does. I mean, at the end of the day, all of these guys are gonna be top 10 draft picks anyway, It doesn't really matter where they go on. They're all gonna be multi million years. But there is more of a fight now because it was the thought was that deck Wilson was going to be The number two or three pick on now, Obviously, with field doing this, all right, like kind of a lot of, you know, there's good teams out there. They're gonna say that I want that guy's our NFL quarterback going forward. Well, yeah, he's gonna

"Three FBS programs currently own four consecutive conference titles one Clemson and the ACC to Oklahoma out of the big twelve three is okay apps state you got it as a son about what does that say about the evolution of his mountaineers football program you know it it tells you a lot about the shape they were left in by Scott Satterfield in the you know when drink which took over as the the the main man there and I think you just look at the talent they have accumulated during ten Evans of running backs that Thomas a quarterback in the tradition the their defense is playing great all the time I really like the way that program is three sooner suspended for the college football semi final against L. as you were talking about the fence van Ronnie Perkins running back mark remonstrate Stevenson and wide receiver Trajan bridges these are significant players impact on Oklahoma team that was already an underdog going into this game well Stevenson had a large yards per carry but really their top back down the structures can be broke so I think to be okay at running back I'm concerned about Perkins known because if you look at Oklahoma's defense their strength this year has been getting to the quarterback thirty five sacks among the nation's leaders in TF bells and Perkins right on the at the top of their sack leader so taking him on the line ups gonna hurt and you're going to have to put pressure on Joe Berle because Oklahoma secondary is not a bunch of NFL draft expect their their third good but they're not great quarterbacks can't give brought a lot of time so they're gonna have to generate something speaking of getting after the quarterbacks are chase young is caught on camera when asked about returning to Ohio state saying that's the plan much was made of that response considering that what he's done this year sixteen and I have stacks can you see a scenario where he does not turn pro I'm gonna go ninety nine point nine percent chance no way this guy's coming out probably going to be the first pick in the draft the only thing he could do by coming back is cross themselves some money because right now he's as hard as they could be no he's definitely going pro you think you'll be the first pick in there you think you'd be picked over a quarterback not a quarterback says yesterday you probably draft a quarterback but he's probably the most talented guy had then do it at the most sure thing at the number at the number one spot so he'll go number two and get a lot of money all right the next group of talent to the college football ranks top recruiting classes in E. S. P. N. a ranking those classes of course the powers like Clemson Alabama our house they know less you right there as the top for you got a team like Texas a and M. that's in the top ten Texas rounds out the top ten but how did the mid tier non power five schools even some of them in the power five conferences that are on the tat back into those conferences how did they compete if the rich continue to get richer with those talented classes well the main thing they have to do is develop the players and win games because the kids don't realize the past ten years ago they realize what's going on now and if you can get your team up there and that can win level every year ten eleven wins then I think they'll take notice and you can get my keep in mind you can only sign twenty five players every year there's a lot of talent out there so you might not get the five stars in the four stars but not every five star four star turns out to be a star and not every two star and three star doesn't I mean we see a lot of superstars there so the main thing is developing the kids and winning games good point he's ESPN college football insider Phil Steele Hey Phil bowl season is under way I'm sure you're excited we look forward to talking to you throughout sounds great Jim and livid Jerry holiday and looking forward to a lot of football this week hi Phil merry Christmas take a self thanks all right so we mentioned Perkins Stevenson bridges out for Oklahoma another sooner sidelined as well that safety delay Aaron and Turner yell broken collar bone he will not play as well on that chick fillet peach bowl December twenty eighth against top ranked LSU the game in Atlanta easy trip for fans from that ruse leading Greg McElroy to this take regarding that by you Bengal

"Dot com. You have the first overall pick in your fantasy football draft. Who are you taking speaking of football. The calendar is certainly turned turned. August which means college football will be played this month and that means that it's time for ranking the different teams and the two thousand nineteen preseason coaches poll. Oh was released with defending national champion clemson coming in and number one. It's the first time in the program's history. The tigers have been ranked number. One in the preseason season coaches poll national runner up alabama also clocked in at number two with georgia oklahoma ohio state rounding out the top five and then clemson alabama are the only two teams that have received first place votes and one of the most surprising notes of this poll is that the much-maligned pac twelve landed landed five teams in the top twenty five with washington being the highest ranked team at number twelve so let me give it to clemson alabama georgia oklahoma ohio a._o._l. State one through five and then you've got l._s._u. Michigan florida notre dame and texas. We're gonna be talking to roy eisenhart. Just a second we call the segment inside inside angle. He's a lawyer former president of the oakland. A.'s and his family owned the oakland as he was the president of that team and now teaches law and sports at u._c. Berkeley and and then sal berry will drop by as he does each week we call the segment that collector's corner and he's a writer for sports collectors digest beckett publications and the hockey ocoee news and sal is run a website called puck junk at one time and then we'll talk some baseball with mckee wilson played twelve years in the major leagues for the mets in toronto now. He's written a very interesting book. Hope you'll check out. It's called mookie life baseball in the eighty six minutes. That's when they won the world series. We've got you on sports. "Because i knew it would give you plenty to talk about here for me. I i just wondered just toss you the the ball and let you take it. <hes> just kind of give us <hes>. Give us the details <hes> and because you know already several several of his comments have gotten a lot of reaction and i think we we would all like to know some of the context of what he said and how he said it. It's pretty simple talking all. I said you know what you hope. Clemson alabama playing years a good for football is good for the four news right got into into you know. All you hear a lot now that it may be you guys you're pathway. There is easier in that play the part that he jumped up there you could tell he was educated for the players on that team last year that somehow what they accomplished have been diminished perceive correal by what alabama face and his schedule versus clinton sakes and you know. I don't agree with data that the a._c._c. see see is you know is as good as the s._e._c. As far as the week don't cry now. I think he has a very good point. Listen alabama blew. Everybody played late last year. They won by average was thirty plus points a game so you know the whole narrative that they were tired and worn down as he said they should have been arrested to harley played in the second hand <hes> so i you know i think that's that's fair. Here's the big difference to me and i think if you look at it from a thousand feet away alabama play georgia in the s._e._c. chance of being like a georgia team. I think most of us would agree was among the talk through five teams in college football year clemson played pit average pit the other caveat here if you're looking at it from the s._e._c. Perspectives poehler stated close to being before that used to be in that really diminishes the a._c._c. and being able to wind your way through the s._e._c. is the a._c._c. <hes> but that's it didn't just beat alabama that peter bob and they were better football team and i used nix savings words paul with nick last weekend and these are his work not mine. He's the clemson exposed us. That's what he told me and i don't take anybody could agree with that exactly but chris what i'm interested in from what dabo sweeney said when he when he talks about the gauntlet outlet and you know we were worn out. I mean i is certainly nick. Sabin hasn't said that you know that exactly <hes> where is dabo sweeny pointing those those those darts me and he said for their media okay trek they've created he nick have as you know as well as yvonne great relationship very a lot of mutual respect <unk> effect he'd already had knicks ladder the certificate the dinner nick and terry. It's our favorite restaurant near his office so he's not shooting in kerala band. He's got great respect in what they've done there. I think it was more you know that his he felt like maybe his team last year was getting a little bit because of based purely on conference affiliation and he doesn't agree with that. I i don't agree with the a._c._c. is on par with the s._e._c. from week to week standpoint standpoint but i think it is probably fair to say that the s._e._c. fears has you made this point to be as they've been as deep as it was maybe during when they hit one six or seven straight national championships. I think that's fair to say but here's what i will say is travel and i've done this for a long time..

"I was calling buddy <hes> you ain't been on t._v. In a while we missing you so thank you what we go through this every year <hes> right after media days the the network that we work with and for here takes a break where they they have <hes> th this year was the talent takeover so <hes> we get a lot of questions about the future of the show during these two weeks or so on radio but we're not on television but i imagine <hes> will be interrupted too many more times between now and the end of the year no problem with what i got a computer. Thanks for for era quick <hes> well first of all i my son he's only he's only fourteen months old but you know i named him. After the biggest alabama killer mall his first name's renfro and <hes> he's a he's a little guy but <hes> besides that <hes> i've been wanting to stay a few times but it never never <hes> never came up but <hes> i was <hes> i was wondering besides clemson alabama georgia and say say oklahoma not counting. Those four teams with fourteen d thing that has a good shot to make the playoffs this year well. You know i think after that you have to look at <hes> either michigan or ohio state they whoever wins that game <hes> l._s._u. I would put on the outside of that list. Perhaps <hes> and then okay any pac twelve. I don't you know it's still not believing maybe oregon <hes> if they can get by auburn we'd have a shot and then i would really struggle to come up with much more than that. I'm not ready to put texas in that group. I know some people will but i think it's a really really small group teams that are in contention. Thanks for the call. We are heading to a break. We're here for four hours ars and we're not going anywhere. We hope you'll give us a ring at eight five five two four to seven to eight five. "Thank you brad resolve staggering numbers when you think about the history of college football where these teams fit into that we're we're living in a historic moment right now so marcus if it happens again. Is this dominance right now with these two teams in this rivalry. Is it good for College Football Paolino. Oh and I'll tell you why because so many people have even challenged me on the fact like I'm for it as a competitor awry you earn your way to the national championship but if we're we gotta contextualized when we talk about good for college football good for any sport is parody. That's the most exciting thing about sports when you have an opportunity to see teams that All of the other schools that play college football that's basically saying this is almost guaranteed when you compare it to everybody else that has participation patient in trying to make it to the college football player and then to it just gets old. I mean look it's it's fun for certain people is fun for certain fan basis in particular but I remember sitting in Atlanta when Auburn was playing Georgia for the S._e._C. Championship that was more of a buzz us that was more of a sense of man we about to get a game. It was an Alabama we know Alabama's GonNa win and they end up in the national championship after this game ain't even though Georgia has pushed them to the brink when Auburn and Georgia plate an S._e._C. Championship the buzz and the building was a lot more just groovy than it has been for so many years with Alabama play whoever they play in the east and everybody knowing what the result would be marcus. These dominating is fantastic for college football and what's good for sport is passion. Some fans love these teams more hate these teams because they're on top all the time that's one reason but here's another they show the way for the rest of college football and how to get there when Sabin in Davos took over their schools they were pretty average and they use different style but similar principles to get to the top and it's not like they both had money clemson had never raised money in the way that Devo Navajo raised money in terms of amount and in terms of number of donors and so these are things that other schools even if they don't have that huge dollars are able to emulate violate if they're good enough they show the path and the result the fruit is on the tree others can do it too and that's good for college football Taylor. I mean I respect that what you just said Trevor but we know Dale well. We don't want to see the same teams play for Nassar the championships everyone. That's the best thing that happened for college. Football is Georgia and giving us those games when you look at the role that Alabama has had take it must have been predicated on the fact that Kirby smart has almost done it. He's almost beaten Alabama to play in the College Football playoff that that has been the excitement to me when you look at the seasons recently the past two years the most exciting point in college football was those games things between Georgia and Alabama forever. I'm with you that it's the two best teams in the these are it and this is. This is pretty cool that we're living in this moment moment so I think I think it's okay for college football for now but at what point trevor does the law of diminishing returns kick in is this like the fast and furious franchise franchise like once we hit number seven number ten. Where is it trevor that law of diminishing returns if it gets to that point was signified the college football <unk> has much bigger problems because other programs are doubling and tripling down Texas saying in Michigan Oregon so many others and if this goes clemson sort of Alabama for too much longer it means the rest of them were failing and that's not these other guys fault? They are certainly dominant. It looks like we're headed for par five and it's as as you said it's up to other programs to make sure that that does not happen up next. We're GONNA look outside a Clemson Alabama. We've got some season win insoles from Vegas over for few teams looking to bounce back from lackluster campaign where we had back mm-hmm very very insightful Payton's places featuring peyton manning the first four episodes now streaming online exclusively on E._S._p._N.. Applause right..

"Let me let me turn I will turn the page briefly before I go back to task you about Georgia because we've had some conversations nations <hes> throughout the spring about <hes> talent and you're very high in their talent much. There's more there's more to winning than than depth chart but I don't want you to assess Georgia's Georgia's talent end up Chart Clemson Alabama right here Georgia's right here right there I mean if they're one eight one be Georgia's three no doubt and the reason why is because they've done such a great job in the trenches along the offensive line Paul that is that position where if you just look across all offense of lines everywhere are bad really really bad and they go seven deep at the position the two guys that might not starve for them talking to Cole Cubelic he studied those guys like there's no tomorrow tobacco. Those two guys would start at twelve other programs in the league so that's saying something that's a great place to start. They have a veteran quarterback. They have a really good skill at running back. They have excellent personnel in the back seven defensively for the two areas though where they are not yet to wear Clemson and Alabama are wide receiver where there are question marks very optimistic about seven's very optimistic about Dmitri's Robinson. I'm very excited to see what Matt Landers can do a long big body of resembles A._J.. Green Physique but it needs to showcase that play making building on a more consistent basis that's one area where they're not up there with Alabama Clemson at least at this point and then along the defensive line and if you look at their defensive line they have good personnel they have good players for instance Tyler Clark Excellent player but he hasn't always showcase the ability to take over a game. They need that game recor upfront defensively that can take over a game much Quinn Williams much like the guys that Clemson had over the last few years where if this guy wins one battle it's over the play is lost and they haven't had that they've had incredible linebacker play. They've got incredible secondary play but the defensive line and it might get there with the addition of some of their young recruits. It's not yet to the same level or at least it hasn't been that's Alabama and Clemson this the one difference those are the two difference. Excuse me that I would say. They're just a step behind at least at this point lane still close though Paul. They're really really close. It seems that way and I would like s you after that L._S._U.. Seems to be the next team that everyone likes yeah. What's the difference between Alabama own? Excuse me uh-huh Alabama Georgia L._S._U.. So l._S._U.. Were all anxious to see what the offense looks like still a little bit of a question mark what I appreciate though and talking GonNa coach all I called their spring game and he basically said High School Teams Will Run ten times more complex schemes than what we're GONNA run in the spring game tomorrow but you're GonNa like what we have in the fall essentially what he said so they didn't show us anything but what we did see was a quarterback and shotgun the entire spring game we saw four wide receivers on the field at a time which they almost never did over the last decade and change we saw them take the pressure off their offense of line with short quick. Nick passes like that offensive line at L._S._U.. Is Not what it was ten years ago so quit trying to feature that group in a mauling type of way with the downhill rushing attack we saw Clyde Edwards Taylor who's like a Darren sproles esque back work out of the backfield and the passing game they have to freshman running backs that are arriving that we're excited about and John Emory being one who's one of the top backs in the country that might be the day one the first and second down running back for L._S._U.. This year and then on the defensive side much like like Georgia to a certain extent when L._S._U. was in their heyday remember Glen Dorsey. I mean they were incredible along the defensive line..

He does I don't think even disputes it. When you look at him. He I don't think he would dispute it the last piece was very flattering. I felt like it was a piece to make up for all the other pieces. The betrayal pieces are totally on me. Those are just an active joy on my part. I love breaking news that Dan doesn't want broken yet. In the case of this last profile on Dan in the show. I must say that was not my idea. It was suggested to me by an editor much to my benefit as it turned out. It was very well done. It was I must've been listen to interview me for a long time. "NFL shows are still five people in sofa chairs like predicting the game showtimes, got one of those the NFL's Milken this thing just guy sitting around predicting the game of it. And I I want to ask you again because I'm always mocking how poorly the media understands football. Why did no one when more people are eating at this trough than? Ever why didn't know one have that going that way? Like, why did no one have the insight the knowledge the matchup understanding to say in a one game sample clemson's defensive line is overwhelming. We're basically talking about half a football, right? Because that game was still expected Alabama to win in the first half. Yes, or no I stuck around in the fourth quarter because it was ala Bama seriously. I stuck around that long and that game because I thought maybe Alabama could come back. But the reason I think people were unwilling to say that Nick aided never lose his like that seen it JP loss. Mun I know, but that's a terrible way to analyze sports. Just because we have so one loon can go out there and make you know. Sure, there was a whole. Going to sound like a loon before. What if you tell me the way it's going to happen? You set it you think usually wish I usually got got this guy. So congratulations. He's what you want. I yes, I have made crazy predictions. If they're right, I'm celebrated if they're wrong. No one remembers we were all for two weeks leading up to the game. Perhaps. I would said Clinton a blowout. I think the answer you question is that Nick Sabin was different than everybody else. Maybe less night show that he wasn't. But before last night, you looked at Nick Sabin in a different way than you looked at other coaches. This was a coach so great and program. So great that he was not capable of being blown out like this. He might lose once every three years, but not like this. I love to his move of if we hadn't had two weeks off. I would have predicted a blow out when yesterday he was laughing at the idea of flat-footed quarterback at standing back there against Alabama defense and doing with that dude exactly did just being your sidekick, man. Johnson helped me out. I mean, you forget you MBC sixteen over a one. That was my prediction never happened before. I said it it happened that year. We'll put it on the poll please to turn the ball over. Funny or not funny, and again, that's stolen. That is not that is absolutely not mine. Stolen donlevatar on the rig popping it up on the rig. Why were you doing that? So we talked at who who's the we that we talked to young people like suing me, lying L O L film, Greg. Stugatz. Look at Greg Cody trying to get into the hipster conversation with the L O L. Right. I see why am I might just said L O L SMH these live at our show with this Stu gods on ESPN radio. You guys have any opinions on what's going on with our Kelly. This is in this climate are Kelly for the last. I don't know fifteen years has been somebody who does things and you've heard a number of accusers. It's not one willing to put their name. Or face on this stuff. He has done some things that have been done deviously in music for a long time in terms of young women or underage women. And but his his situation when you're reading about it and listening to it feels almost like head of a cult type of control trying to control an environment in in ways that are abusive, and my guess is illegal, but you need somebody to try him. You need somebody to be willing to have the journalists are doing the reporting the journalist's talking to the victims all over the place, and this has been something we've been talking about in some form or another for about a decade. Yeah. It's amazing. When contemporaries begin to publicly this sounds like chance the rapper did saying he regrets working with our Kelly. I found chance the rapper's comment fascinating. And unbelievably. Honest because one of the things he said is I didn't believe black women like they were black women. And I just didn't believe them because they were black women. "Best phones. Best networks, no contracts. Aired and not giving credit to someone for the stat used in the first segment. Josh do bow AP the last time Nick Sabin lost a game by more than fourteen points was December seventeenth two thousand and six when the bills beat the dolphins. Twenty-one nothing behind three touchdown passes from JP loss. Last person to do to Nick Sabin. What was done last night was JP Lawson? So I wanna talk to you. We talked yesterday. Right. I know that we dabbled in hyperbole all season talking specifically saying Alabama second team should be the number two ranked you mentioned that day because we actually have sound. And these are not good looks for you. I'm telling you that. I think I'd rather watch Alabama second team led by Jalen hurts play against Alabama's. I will put this on the poll who has a better chance against Alabama 's I team would it be the second team of Alabama led by Jalen hurts lost one game. And I'll Obama or would it be? I'm asking you. The only game develop developing a place at second. I don't say enough dumb stuff by myself with you guys having to edit the stupidity. Into me. Here's another clip, Alabama's at dynasty, a not a ratings monster. But they are on the precipice. I believe of ruining everything the way that you accused the Golden State Warriors of ruining everything because if they can go into Baton Rouge and decimate that defense because there is good at offense. As I happen to think they are it's game over man, Clemson, Ohio State, forty two twenty that happens to a high state that never happens album. But you gotta beat them. Because you returning a missed field goal. One hundred yards. They don't move like that. They don't lose forty two to twenty the way that Ohio State. Nailed it. We made it. Forty four to sixteen. Yep. And now feels like clemson's going to be the Golden State. Yeah. That's right. That's how we do it. Museums are just Decima trade blows year after year. Well, that's that yesterday was fairly amazing that going into that game album and Clemson head played one hundred ten games against teams that weren't Alabama. And Clemson and they were one oh, six and four. I mean to be able to be in that mix to break it up the way that Georgia did by get into the national championship team. And almost doing it's hard. When you're in the SEC, we've seen Auburn do it occasionally. But it's hard to do that he needs someone like an urban Meyer out in different conference now urban Meyer gone, so a who- stopping these teams. I like to get into the larger please explain this to me. Okay. Because I'd like to get into the larger conversation here. You know, how much I mock prediction radio and prediction television. "So now, they're doing that. But their rules are different. They have to say in the super physical sport. Because the NFL says physically you're not ready to handle this league for three seasons. You're gonna have a running back take SEC punishment for three seasons. It becomes in his eye cry that rule is so interesting to me because the two cartels working with each other pro football is protecting protecting its minor league. System, and they file it under all of it under. Well, those kids aren't big enough to play football. First of all, they're Zion Williamson's out there all over the place. But they file it all under health and protection. What is simply is preserved the free minor league system? And we're twenty years I think away from any discernible change because we'll look how long it took the NBA to say. Okay. One and done is twenty years. Yeah. It'll never change as long as they pay people a million dollars to run that one bowl game year. Like that will never change those guys are going to keep getting that money. Well, it'll change with the advent of other leagues. Now the other leagues have to be successful. But competition would breed rule changes. You'd have to think if you have someone like a USFL saying, no, we'll pay you instead of going to college you come here than the NFL might start feeling the heat and have to change its rule look at how we're all talking about Trevor Lawrence today. I mean last night was pretty valuable for him. Like, everyone is gushing over him. Now, I mean value in that. Yeah. But the next years will also be pretty valuable him. I'm assuming right like. Two more years of build up. I mean, he would be the number one draft pick if he entered this season. I'd have my don't you something to an eighteen year old in nineteen year old not being ready? I understand major league baseball, tennis hockey. I get all of it. But a nineteen year old is he ready to play in the NFL. I understand, but the NFL did change its rules to make it easier for someone of that frame at that position. If we can like the idea of this is somewhat ridiculous. Because are we really saying that any human body is quick for the NFL? Like, let's think about that. When someone more quilt he's going to grow. That's right clowning. He's going to grow. He's going to grow physically. He's going to be a bigger player, and he might but the way the rules are in that league right now he can play he can play physically in that league. I don't know about reading defenses and all that stuff. But you just played in that league that was love. Bama. He did that too. Donlevatar Gordon Nelson had a goose egg. Unbelievable. What are the odds money in the Bank?.

"He was really impressive with how he would hang in the pocket something that you don't really see with freshmen, especially freshman going up against Nick Saban thing to be clear with what Dan said earlier Lawrence. And who's the why is it Ross the white music with the freshman. It's two more years. Two more years at Clemson. Yeah. The system keeps them there for three seasons if you play them right away and Clemson had three guys who were suspended for last night's game. And they still beat them that badly, which is pretty amazing, but people writing off Nick Sabin today. It's ludicrous that save it's done Daboh than who save in cleanses the new Alabama now on it's both teams are going to be better next year. Correct. They have these quarterback. Yes. With another offseason of development another year of. Physical development because you seen just over the course of the season. How different Trevor Lawrence looks physically than he did when he was coming in and spot duty and relief of Kelly. Bryant Lawrence's is the size of rob gronkowski's the same and maybe ten or twelve pounds lighter. But the thing about college too, though is that you know, when you're a top five recruit. Schools don't need to recruit you. You're so good that you recruit schools, and if it reaches a point where Clemson is the place to go just the way Alabama has been the place ago, then it's gonna metastasized, and it's only gonna get easier for devastating but hasn't Clemson Bennett place to go. I mean Ross the wide receiver fr- he's from Alabama. And it got the best freshman quarterback in the country. I mean, it's been a place to go. I feel I for a few years. Now are we just figuring out today? The clemson's pretty good which is weird because they've been in the college football playoff four straight time. All right. They've beaten Alabama in a title game previously. Right Chevra Laurence's fifty pounds lighter than gronk when you said that. Wait a minute. Fifty wait a minute. How much Trevor Lawrence way Trevor Lawrence is six five to sixteen and gronk his sixty six then also might be he has. He's growing though official burger. Grow it. But he's not still growing. He's not close to. So wait, let still you get my point. But you like football was trailing behind basketball. And this was a about a decade and a half ago day. On the second point. I mean, the point is Trevor learns really big the point is you couldn't sound any worse than you in every way. Like, you're like, it's not bad enough that the that the points are wrapped in phlegm sickness and things that are distracting the show, but on top of that the point stinks, actually, the phlegm level has been pretty good. Dry. But lemme by the point stakes will that point stunk. I worn Trevor Lawrence was I can't leave you alone for a minute here. I cannot leave you alone for one minute here before but you'll poop on the carpet. Yeah. This is incredibly unfair that Trevor Lawrence has a play this physical sport for two more seasons for no money. You saw a decade and a half ago. College basketball realize get good we gotta play these freshmen and not sit on the bench. We gotta play them right away. Because that's how we get the elite guys. And now the elite programs football realize we'll get the best freshman in the country and they're gonna play right away. Otherwise, they're gonna leave us..

"This is the Dan Le Batard show with this to spot casts. So that was a stunner last night. But not. Because Clemson won the money in Vegas told you before that game when if went off at five and a half that money didn't five and a half is not a giant ups. Now, it's the way they want and the way they want something that Nick Saban has an experienced since he was the dolphin coach facing JP Lawson. What that's right. He hasn't lost like that since he was coaching the dolphin. But the stunning part of it is and I know American joy laughing at Nick Sabin last night. Over the last couple of years. They didn't beat Auburn that way. Then BBC that way they didn't Louisville that way. They didn't Wake Forest that way. Comington beat Georgia Tech that way, they didn't beat Syracuse that way and then didn't beat them at all. Then beat NC state that way didn't beat up us. You that way? We've not seen that since Nick Sabin has been at Alabama. Michael David Smith had the stat of Nick Saban at Alabama has played with fourteen points or more as the margin. I think it was one hundred six time he was one hundred six until last night. We just haven't seen that. And what I wanted to ask you guys about it is did anyone have it going that way? Did you hear anyone in all of the places that it was being talked about that this game was happening and the weeks leading up to it that people were doing predictions. I'm not talking about did people have Clemson winning, right? Did people? Have that happening? Anybody? Did you hear anybody have that happening? I didn't hear a single person say Clemson with blowout. Alabama know, plenty of people say how Bama blow Clemson I heard some people say Clemson would beat Alabama. But no one said that would happen last night. I didn't hear it. No, I didn't either. And there's such an invincible aura around Nick Saban at Alabama that you think that just the magic of Nick Sabin is gonna prevent any of his team from being blown out in that manner. I it was it was amazing to watch and beyond that now the conversation shifts right because yesterday stew tonight, we're talking, and we were talking about how do you stop the Alabama juggernaut from being the John wooden teams the way you do it is by having to freshman do that to them last night in the system doesn't allow them to go be pros? Like the system keeps them there for two years. And so and you saw. Post-game speech is didn't they didn't have a player just simply telling people to come to Clemson 'cause 'cause it's fun to play. Clemson. I mean, they got something special there that entire D line could have been drafted high and they decided to come back to chase a championship college football playoff team the previous year. You don't see that? In today's game. They came back, and they blew out Alabama who was the boogeyman. And I guess how you how you stop the John wooden run from Alabama's yet another John wooden team out there. And that's what Clemson right? That's what Clemson as it was the prising though to see it was surprising with all that said the Trevor Lawrence play that good in. That's that was amazing. We did we did talk yesterday about the idea that that kid was a pro that I wasn't sure which quarterback in that game was better because I didn't know about his growth, we now know which one of those quarterbacks is better and has the bigger future because to turn the ball over. That's not my joke that somebody else. Healing that. I'm stealing that from some what happened. What happened as tell the joke? It's a terrible Joe's good. Oh, no. I don't like my allies. You know, what I'm going outside for two hundred Cody agreed with something. I'm gonna go sit in the penalty box. I'm not so sure if he projects to be better, but he is six foot six to fifty curb Sherie made the point like, can you imagine what this dude's gotta look like in two years not just on the field. But physically he's got such an incredible frame. And he was getting popped in the pocket, occasionally wouldn't go down. He was taking some shots..

"Let me hear it. Tonight's national championship. Only match up you need even the most ardent playoff expand. Or knows. That's the case. If you're Clemson Alabama somebody's finishing your fifteen. And for the first time in football this the cheetah victory. The most important thing in tonight's game. George go ahead. Oh, the most important things the quarterback play. You look at two. He's got forty one touchdowns. Four picks this year Trevor Lawrence no slapped by the way, twenty seven touchdowns himself. And I think this is going to be one of these games where whoever has the ball last. Tony is going to win. This thing. Defense is dead, basically. Okay. As much as we how great Alabama's players are on defense. And they are they're great individual players Clinton is great individual players. They'll be a bunch of first round picks that are coming out of those defenses. But the way college football is now it's all about the offense and how many so every new Iran. Alabama's front seven front. Four is going to dominate this game decide how this game is one. You say that throw that out the window? There is no defense whoever has the ball last. And you Don, Georgia's right? The key is the quarterbacks, but Trevor Lawrence isn't the dual threat to Shawn Watson was when when clips beat Alabama. The Shawn Watson rush twenty one times only forty three yards, but you have to think that dual threat kept Alabama's defense. Bows, travelers has only rush fifty four times all season. So he's not the threat to run. And I think Alabama could really key on him in the pocket. Unlike when the match this game. Well, the metrics decided is going to be the running game of Clinton they average two hundred and fifty yards running. And they put the ball in Travis SE ns hands. That's something that they did not have before as j just kind of mentioned. So I think whether or not they can run the ball effectively also controlling the clock which can give their defense some rest and get the ball into the end zone that way, I think that can change the ten that's the pet victory over Clemson. Did you see that happening? I think so. Yeah, I think they gotta do that. And none of that. You just look at Alabama's last game. How they let eight oh you get back into the game. I mean, they've had some struggling guy. So yeah, I see that. Clemson has to get to the quarterback. They sacked the quarterback fifty two times. He's here now too. We know not really one hundred percent with that ankle that he has not the same quarterback like most quarterbacks when he gets pressured obviously, his percent completion percentage goes down to me that will be the key. But I just think that Alabama whenever they lose. It seems like a fluke when they're trailing at half time. It seems like a fluke. I just think they're too dominant. Alabama tonight. You wanna give us a score Franken? Thirty four black Saul. Clemson thirty one third. Thirty twenty seven and George you've got like the the final being seventy two seventy right. Forty one thirty Alabama break ground. Technology truth brought to you by. Truth. You will certainly any text about your supervisor to your supervisor. What's Janet's fangs?.

"So just you know football heaven for Saturday day if you live in the west coast early game starts at one thirty for us all the way through Monday night, which actually also happens to be down the street from me Levi stadium might be going to the game. Not one hundred percent. Sure yet waiting on my ticket hook up. I know some people that know some people, but maybe not enough people. We're about to find out how much pull I have the other problem for Clemson, Alabama's and it might rain. And if it rains, I'm west coast, soft. There's no chance John middlekauff attending the game if it rains. Yeah. Just went third person. But I won't be going. But but I do want to go because the game Clemson, Alabama, which I'm sure we'll talk about next week has a chance to be all-time. Great. I mean, it's of all the games this weekend. I think it's the best obviously. Has the most on the line just in terms. It's a national championship is the first round of the playoffs, but all these events Saturday Sunday and even Monday night. You know, are just a rare time the nine the Netflix has an unreal documentary on the ninety s and I was born in eighty four and thirty four years old. So the nineties played a big role in my life. And it's just crazy to see like I was telling someone on the phone this today like when I was growing up it'd be like ninety three or ninety six or George H Bush or Bill Clinton talked on the television, and you were at home, and you're like ten years old ninety four we stopped everything we were doing, and we watched it as a family, and like eighty million people watched in that Netflix documentary like Seinfeld in friends in the last episode of cheers like they used to get like seventy five million people watching it one time Anapa sewed. I mean now if you get five million people to watch it one time, it's crazy. They're football is king, ROY. Right now by four when it comes to sports events in this country, because it's one of the only events politics, you name it like Donald Trump talks now in we're a little saturated by like, not everyone's hell you work to avoid him talking. And this is not political. I'm not another do with the way, I think I just I don't care, and I know most of you don't care either. You you don't want to watch. It wouldn't matter if it was Donald Trump Bronco. It just times have changed. Like, there are no network television shows that all of us are drawn to our couch football and really rely big live sporting events. I think Tiger Woods is like this the NBA finals can be like this clearly the World Cup around. Just the world is like this in football is still like this..

"Do they come up with that money? I guess they just ask a donor for it. So this move happened over the weekend. A coach goes back to a school seventeen days after taking and other job leaving players high and dry. Your thoughts on that at eight five five two one two four CBS that's eight five five two one two four two two seven. The college football playoff has produced. Another Clemson Alabama showdown. You might say the college football system got right because we've got the two best teams playing each other again. But is that really what's best for college football? Does that make it a good playoff? Does it make it a good playoff system? Eight five five two one two four CBS. That's eight five five two one two four two two seven. I major Phillip pony on this New Year's Eve in for Bill writer here on CBS sports radio and Sirius XM channel two oh six here is Mark in Chicago. He's on CBS sports radio. Hi, mark. Hey, how you doing? Hey, hey, I don't I don't think the college football deal be trying to get it. Right. Because like that guy was saying earlier now too. You're dead. Ohio State won the championship came back the next year, and they get here because Michigan beat them here here, right? And then what you were saying Michigan state beat them head to head and also won the big ten championship. Okay. Okay. Now, we know clearly that was that was one of the best four teams that year. But yeah, we didn't get in there. Then the following year. But if they if they lost to if they lost to a team that won the big ten championship. He just go by your eyeballs, and you don't care about the results on the field. Okay. Here we go. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go a little further on the year that Penn State beat Ohio State and won the big ten championship. And they took a high of state that you're right. It didn't make sense. You see what's going going in the pros? They could easily won. So what's your point? So what's your? It's a big deal. Biased ears P O's SEC. So they're trying to make sure that the SEC used to light or deal. Anyway, that's the way I look at it. But if it was if it was if it was biased if it was biased towards the SEC. Why did the committee take Oklahoma over Georgia? Because like you say the ratings ain't been the same since stuff like that star happening, right, but Albany, Alabama and Georgia have played to great games. The last time they went up against each other over time in the playoffs last year. SEC? I mean, none of those teams have a quarterback beside. Hold on your you said, the college football playoff was biased towards the SEC. And I'm asking you. Why didn't they take Georgia? I mean, they couldn't why because because Georgia didn't win their conference. So Alabama didn't win their conference last year. And they took them Alabama has been there done their I approve it, George April. What do you mean? Georgia Georgia, Georgia lost Georgia lost in overtime in the college football playoff last year to Alabama Alabama. Wait. Wait, wait was there that Alabama guy beat in by in a in a playoff? I'm not a playoff game. But in a bowl gangs. It ain't Alabama. Can't be. Okay. Thank you, Mark. I appreciate your listening. Here's Ricky in South Carolina. He's on CBS sports radio Iraqi, hey, what's going on? I have to agree and disagree with you play out system. I'm a Clemson Tigers fan. How many games do we need to fight sixteen? I mean, they talked about making more. I don't know you guys are about to play fifteen. What's one, right? So why one more Notre Dame? It didn't play as many as Clemson played. You have a what does that have to do with anything? I just think that here's a here's an here's an here's an idea. Here's a good one for you. How about is that a plane Furman you drop that game? And you have an extra playoff game that takes its place. How about that? That would work. Work. You can make it to the playoffs. You you. Gotta do one thing. You got to win. That's all you gotta do is win. That's what. But that's not true. That's not true. Because you see because you see apps won twenty five games in a row what they need to the president and attended this might sound stupid. But I would do the president and the head coach need to get on national TV and say we want to join another toppers. Well, anybody let us in a calm. But that but that, but that goes that contradicts. What you just said you said all you need to do is win they've won. And they can't get in. Plan. He did say that you didn't say it at anything to do with who you player when you play all you said is as long as you win. You're good. You gotta play people other deferment. Well, they beat Auburn last year. Here lately. Auburn to set for the last last year. Last year. Last year. Auburn beat Alabama. Anybody can beat Auburn Auburn beat Alabama and Georgia the two teams that played for the national championship last year. But they lost a UCF. So the premise that all you need to do is win is is wrong because the team can't doesn't lose and can't get in coming up next. This is going to be a treat. We're going to talk to you a guy who played for the Steelers and the patriots and get perspective on how one great team does it in. How a team that is in a state of disarray..

"Ten fifty WT Cayenne Arbor ticket. A Cumulus station. I've got one phone line open. And as you know, that's good in the US and Canada where we can hear us one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six I up though, we start our number two by talking college football. I'm joined by reporter for Fox Sports and f s one also a national college football insider for the athletes. A New York Times bestselling author. He is everywhere. He is busy. Bruce Feldman back in the jungle. Bruce, great to have you back. How are you? I'm doing great, Jim. Today. It's good to have you on Bruce as always lots of cover, you know, it's kind of tough to draw conclusions. Bruce from the first week college football. But now that we're entering the third week. Are you starting to get a sense of which teams will legit and which ones are not? Yeah. Look, I mean, I think a lot of it is kind of what we expected ala Bama in Clemson and Georgia look like they are amazing talents and just so much deeper than I think just have their starting twenty two. But really the depth of the roster kinda shine through the thing that I think we're gonna find out is a couple of things first of all I think Oklahoma and collar Murray has been a lot sharper than some less thought. They would be without Baker Mayfield. I think Lincoln Riley is a great coach. And I think collar Murray is looking like the guy we heard how Radi wasn't especially was in high school. Obviously, the the competition is gonna step up. But you know, this is a big one this weekend for Ohio State. Why would put in that, you know, Clemson Alabama category of elite elite talent. Now, there's no urban Meyer on the sideline this weekend against TCU. But Gary Patterson has a really well coached team. They have a lot of athletes on both sides of the ball. This is a legitimate test. And I'm curious to see how Ryan day the interim head. Coaches is going to handle it. I think this is going to be a this is one of the best games of the first month of the season. I think that's great matchup. I love that one. Bruce Feldman joining us. So let me go back and talk about some of the some of the teams that you mentioned like Clemson. For instance, Clemson Bruce had a scare against Texas AM last week is that just a tough game on the road. Or is that a cause for legitimate concern for Clemson? No, I think it's a it's a really tough environment to play tetris AM has plenty of athletes. I think Fisher done a really nice job with Kellen Mon is a dual threat quarterback there. And quite honestly, you know, they're going to attack you're saying probably not a talented a team as as especially on the road a game as Clemson may see in the regular season. I mean, I just don't think the ACC aside from Clemson is very good this year. So to me, they're they're so good on defense. But I think there are a little bit of concerns, you know, in the secondary that JIMBO Fisher was able to attack somewhat. And we'll see Kelly Bryant the quarterback you responded. Well, he's the experienced guy. I think this is a is a legit playoff national title contender. And nothing I saw last week changes. My opinion of that. Bruce Feldman is my guest. Bruce, speaking of the quarterbacks, what do you make of the way the dabble Sweeney is handling his quarterback situation versus how Nick Sabin is handling his quarterback situation. Jimmy know, I think because Nick Saban is the best college football coach we've ever seen what he's been able to do in this era. It's hard to question his rationale and how we handle things. It's not always the most diplomatic. It's often not the most diplomatic, but it's hard to find fault with the result. Whereas whereas Dabo Sweeney the vibe around is program. I don't know if I'd say it's much more laid back. But it is there's a there's just a vibe of maybe it's way more upbeat. And I think you see that even in a case of his defensive coordinator, Brent Venables is highly sought after probably could have gotten a bunch of different head coaches, but he really likes his situation there. It's not like Davos weenie has one offense coordinator has two guys share the role it works. And I think you see that with his two quarterbacks now, whether it's Trevor Lawrence who's the hotshot freshmen who everybody raves about or Kelly Bryant who's the guy who's been there. And and worked his way up and is really well respected by teammates for that. It all kind of fits well. And I think that stems from how Dabo Sweeney manage manager. And I just think in the, you know, whether it's dab or Nick Sabin. I just think it's vanilla chocolate. Where? You know, it can be personal preferences. But you cannot argue with the end product because they both win at an extremely high level and they're able to keep things on track. When other places will really struggle with complacency and those kinds of issues and those guys in their own ways because I think they're just authentic to who. They are. They make it work chocolate chocolate all day long. Bruce Feldman joining us. All right. So you had this amazing stat earlier this week Bruce to is ten for ten on third downs for two hundred seven yards and four touchdowns. I mean for any quarterback to those kind of numbers would be unreal. But how do you explain a guy who's barely started a game having much composure in third down situations? I think he is just wired for that haven't been around him a little bit and talk to people who've been around them a lot. They just said he has his unflappable demeanor. And I remember being around this summer when he was at this private quarterback Cam he was talking to a lot of top high school quarterbacks. And the question was really about. How did you handle this where you're the freshman year coming from Hawaii, and there's teammates who may be married come from different places that have all this other investment in time. And and they're older and how do you connect with them? And it was like a multi layered question. And and to us perspective is he naturally simplifies things. He's like, I don't really think about it. Like that. I only think about the grew up playing the game. I that same game that I love, and it may have been in a different place. The weather may have been different, but it's still the same game. And I think just how he's wired is not to over complicate things. Whereas that position as quarterback whether Nick Sabin quarterback or your cliff Kingsbury. Quarterback urban Meyer's quarterback. It's a complicated deal. Whether it's in college or not just because you're dealing with, you know, inexperienced guys and all kinds of different systems. And he does not he just like is always seems to be at a tempo that is comfortable for him. And he's really talented. He's got a great arm, and he's really got good feet. But I just think it's that kind of poison presence that makes him really rare. And that's why I think you know, he's going to be a star not just in college. But beyond that, Bruce Feldman joins us. Now, Bruce this weekend, you're gonna work Houston Texas tech, which means you get a chance to see at all close. I had maitre point on the program earlier this week, and we're talking about we'll make Ed so special in your mind. What makes them so different? So unique things we we just never see such a high level athlete who plays as hard on the D line. He does because when you talk to coaches who played they said, it's the run stuff down from the. The backside effort plays, you know, one of the coached. I talked to you said we had a play box blocked perfectly. It should have gone for forty yards. And you're like an olive or runs it down on the other c gap. And it becomes a four yard gain. You're like that shouldn't happen. How does that? That's not supposed to happen. And he makes that play. He's just got incredibly high motor. He's super explosive athlete. What's what I think is also unique about him as we talk about other raids alignment, and this year is as good as it probably the best crop alignment as we've seen in college football. Clemson's gotta bunch Ohio state's got a bunch. But Mississippi State got, you know, bunch with Houston all is run at Oliver. He's the guy if you're gonna triple team anybody him, and he still finds a way to be productive. And I think that's a credit to him. And you know, I can't wait to watch him watch him from field level this weekend. Because you know, everybody's always gone in for him. And he still delivers gas amazing. Bruce Feldman joining us. Another. The big game in the state of Texas. This weekend is USC going to Austin to deal with the longhorns. Bruce US's coming off a tough loss to Stanford last week. They scored just three points. How much of that was about Stanford being that good? And then how much of that was by JT Daniels making his first road start. I look Stanford has a really good secondary. I was impressed by them. That was our game for FOX last week. The the issue. I thought that surprised me was Stanford. No, I think coming into your most people assumed and thought that Stanford's d line was biggest question, Mark. They lost Harrison Phillips who is a really good player of the year before that Solomon Thomas was the best Eli men out west, and there was questions there. And yet that Stanford defensive front just harass JT Dale than shut down the Ryan, I thought US's offense of line has been a huge disappointment so far, and that's been a problem for USC for now much of a decade. And I don't know how Klay home really gets that fixed. Because Jackie Daniels is talented. He's you know, he's impressive. When you watch him play. They got really good skill guys both at receiver running back. But if they can't block it's gonna make Sam darnold was a little bigger, and he was so creative and. Extended plays and making things happen. Yeah. You might have some more turnovers than anybody would like, but I think he covered up a lot of flaws that right now with a true freshman. I didn't that just put that much pressure on JT Daniel, and somehow this offense of line has got to get a lot better because it's just putting too much on a true. Freshman be thrown into the middle of it. And I'm not saying they're forcing them to have to have to play superman, but what Sam darnold did that's Sam darnold. People. Forget had a year to get acclimated. JT Daniels is jumping right into the defended the pool, and that's that's tall. Order for any any true freshman. We've got a couple of more moments. Bruce Feldman, Bruce, obviously patients is not a strong suit of the Trojan fans, we know this. And then you've got Texas. They're one in one after that season opening loss to Maryland. And they bounce back. They'd be Tulsa last weekend. How the longhorns look to you in your two of Tom Herman. They looked shaky. I mean, we had a week one against Maryland. They were really inconsistent talking to Tom Herman coming off the field at the end of the first half. You like we're in our own. We're trying to be too perfect. So he went up tempo to try to get them kinda get them to settle down. And I think you see that right now it's a team a little bit like USC, which I think is struggling with its own identity. I think there's some some good players there..
