SF Giants: Nothing normal about first workout of Summer Camp

"The Giants held their first teamwork out Friday afternoon at Oracle Park and preparation for the planned start of this pandemic shortened season July 23rd when the Giants and Dodgers will play in L. A Johnny Cueto against Clayton Kershaw. If we can elevate the community spirit that's an important thing for this or baseball for any sports or and in the entertainment and We've all been in a really tough period. It's been a period where we've been disturbed by issues of racial injustice. We've been disturbed obviously, by health and safety impacted have changed our lives. So that I think is the most important export roll sports can play is to is to bring joy to elevate elevate communities. Giants president and CEO Larry Bear telling KCBS that players safety is the most important variable this season. The players will be tested every day, so we're going to need to really monitor them and then players are going to be on the honor system. To some extent. What's the season starts on the road, but are all indications? Are there going to be very cooperative? When a player does test positive? He'll be quarantined for 14 days, Bear says. Baseball has an advantage. Over other team sports and that there is less physical contact, and it's easier to social

"You've been at the dodgers training facility. You're watching the news and it's pretty clear at this point you're not going to see Clayton Kershaw workout. We need you guys. Just decide to get out of there. I don't know he just came out. Let's go home. You know like okay. We walked out. We're still fans out. He and I both just couldn't believe that we are like. There's still people out there trying to get autographs craziest thing happened. We're in the car and just riding along talk and his phone rings and I looked down in the name shows up on the caller. Id on the console. I just went home and I was like. Oh I'm so sorry but it was Sandy Colfax. Oh I know exactly. He was like he's like mind. If I answer this I might try not to look so overeager that my head spun off and I'm GonNa go ahead. It's very clear that they like and respect each other. They call each other Clayton Sandy. You know what I mean like. It's clear that it was just interesting to hear them talk. Because the number of people who can understand what Clayton's life like is very small and the number of people who've almost time traveled into the future and no things about his life and what it's going to be like that numbers even smaller so when they talk about. It was two pitchers. Talking wasn't an eighty four year old and a thirty two year old. It was two guys who could have been talking like there's at famous John mcfee story about the guy who makes birchbark canoes. I mean they were talking about making canoes. I mean they were just talking about their life's work so obviously Colfax and Kershaw are part of this sort of elite group of greatest of All Time. Right the difference being and now. I feel like a jerk. I'm bringing it back to this but it's unavoidable the postseason legacies in the postseason. Records is Kershaw. Do you think he's cognizant of that? Do you think it weighs on him. I don't know I think he will be later. In order to even have a chance to be Clayton Kershaw. You have to be able to process success and failure and build a story to tell yourself about yourself in a way that is every bit as rare as having the arm that can make the ball do that in the in the air. It's easy to go back out there if you keep succeeding having those failures and continuing to go out. There and try is deeply impressive. So you're saying we gotta do to be great right as blest petty could be less petty and just not live in a world in which you're defined by other people which unfortunately is the world. So how'd Your Day with Kershaw End? Think both of our minds were elsewhere. Almost the very end. He dropped me off at my hotel. He was GONNA to meet his family. I was going to try to find some hand sanitizer but it was very much you know. Thanks for the day I appreciate it. It was a weird day but lovely. I mean when I'm reporting my phone is off and so I got back to the hotel and turn my phone and call my wife Sonia. She was like you have to go get clocks wipes and hand sanitizer for your flight. All America has been freaking out over corona virus while you were sitting out at the Los Angeles dodgers with your phone off so it was the next time you got in touch with them. It's funny the only other time I've talked to him as he walked on. Zoom call with Ellen his wife and he walked by and waved a couple of days ago. How has he been spending the time? How is his family? Been spending the time how man they've been his son. They love to play baseball with a ball. They'd be doing a lot of that Ellen. Talked about how he's in the backyard growing into a net and sometimes he throws into a tarp. And you know he's trying to sort of stay in this narrow sweet spot where he's not burning up his arm and yet he's GonNa be ready you know. His workouts are done every day by eleven. Thirty cooking breakfast plan. Papa shot out this Jim. One twenty eight but jockey. I was worried about how I was going to report. And then it turns out that Ellen was filming all these videos of them playing at their house and sending them to the dodgers waiting. Everybody Line Buddy we are going to show you a day in the life of the Kershaw is May Day. She talked a lot about how you know. This is a weird window into what retirement is going to be like. He's in there flipping pancakes and being a dad. And they're watching movies and doing cannonballs in the pool. She realized that how nostalgic they're all gonna be for the sound of a baseball whizzing through the air and then whapping against a tarp or net once. All of this weird baseball circus is over. However many years from now that is she's like you don't really understand what a pitcher like Clayton's fastball. Sounds like until you can hear it and it's terrifying. I mean it's you know it's buzzing through the air so she talked about how she's going to be nostalgic for that sound a guys finishing day bring some books some waffles. It's been a good one. Thanks for hanging out with us. You'll stay safe and hopefully Yeltsin right so you. Did you get the sense from his wife's that they're almost enjoying this extra time with him? This sort of limited period or that. They want baseball to begin. Think both like full-throatedly both understand those are contradictory. But I mean that feels very human to me. He wants to go win a world series. He wants to be number. Twenty two for the Los Angeles dodgers the guy that people count on. He's at home in Texas in April which feels weird. His body knows. He's not supposed to be here. Clayton Kershaw body wants to know. Why the Hell it's not in Los Angeles you know I mean I'm sure like on a subliminal physiological level of feels weird right obviously this law season or Bradtha season on hold is affecting all athletes all baseball players but it seems to me that for someone like her Shah who is getting older who has so much to gain at this point in his career on a team that was regarded by many people to be the favourite going into the baseball season. Well he lose more. If this season never happened. I guess I'd like to let Ellen Kershaw into that. I just pull the story up. She said he is healthier than he has ever been. So I think that that has been frustrating because I think he was so ready to go into the season but part of me also wonders if taking these months off his just going to be more time for rest on his shoulder and then she said you know Clayton his pitch so many innings and I really hung mayor in the air. It's a story about one working person with a family dealing with the corona bars. It'll be a long time. And only with the benefit of hindsight will we understand sort of what was lost in what was.

"So Right Clayton. Kershaw is of course one of the best pitchers in the history of baseball surefire hall of Famer. But he's also well known at this point for his postseason struggles. Where were you in? The dodgers lost the nationals. Last fall I was at my in-laws House last year during the playoffs and like everybody watch that game but one hundred six win dodgers getting a second crack to reach their fourth straight in the deciding fifth game. Dodgers NATIONALS. Coming up next on. Espn he got brought in and the seventh inning. They were up three to one over the nationals. And what's amazing is even with his postseason failures in the past. The crowd of dodger stadium was going crazy when twenty two ran out. There comes one of the best pictures of his generation. The left Clayton Kershaw. Everybody believed including Clayton. He got the last out of the seventh inning Kershaw sets fires. Jack swearing did. He go did him out. Kershaw puts out the fire and he comes out in the eighth inning and gives up back to back home runs. Swing and a high fly ball. Well-struck left field near the wall eight. It's gone blast one off Kershaw. Swing High Fly Ball well-struck. Right CENTER FIELD WAY BACK THERE. God and we are back to back homers two consecutive pitches fifty eight seconds in which the nationals hit. Two home runs and he's taken out of the game. Dropped into a squat position. Didn't even look it where the ball went. This place is stunned. The picture of him in the dugout afterwards just looked like a guy who had his heart ripped out kershaw in the dugout. I mean it's that blank stare of just what just happened. Stephanie Abstain from sports illustrated described his eyes as red rimmed and is over the Washington. Nationals beat the dodgers. They're moving on to the NFL CS his quote after the game. Was everything. People say true right now but postseason? I understand that terrible feeling. This is about as low as a human being can feel in their work. Life is a terrible feeling. No excuses just didn't make this guy twice. I was just curious. What do you do after that? You have all this time to do nothing but think about it and then get yourself in a place to start over and try again. That seems way more impressive to me than the ability to throw a baseball like the the ability to do that. So the next day I sent an email to his agent and there were many agents and publicists and different things but it all started then I started to ask so the first day of the offseason. You Email Clayton's agent asking for an interview than hundred fifty or so days later on March Twelfth. You finally get through face to face with him. How did your day start out? Picks me up at six thirty right on Tom. He's never ever late. And so you know man. We're just riding along shooting. I mean you know we were laughing about the you know. He checks into hotels under fake names. He uses television characters He's been Jim Howard. He was Walter White for a couple of seasons. We went to starbucks and he The name was Tony. So if you're a starbucks or an uber driver in Los Angeles and you're picking up a Tony it might be Clayton Kershaw. And he's probably going to change that now. I'm sorry quite. I told him I was at that world series in Houston I timed. It was a thirteen seconds silence but God. It felt like three times. That's sitting in the car. And then he just changed the subject to talk about. The traffic is second to weather in terms of meaningless conversation. That people add. If if you're talking to someone and they're talking about the traffic the weather they do not want to be talking to. Of course the reason he didn't really want to discuss it isn't just because of what happened last season. It's because of what was the latest in May most gut wrenching in a string of disappointments for me right. What was frustrating. About watching this latest occurrence was it just reinforces. All of these bad sports takes stat e chokes. That's his reputation and it feels so unfair for one of the greatest pitchers of all time to be defined by that book. He's had some bad outings. He's also been the victim of just staggeringly bad management. He's had some bad luck. I mean we ain't even talked about the Astros thing yet where they just stole that when the first pitch swing flag. That's a tough shot. Sold the first pitch from Herschel and Houston as scored four runs bidding tits out Clayton Kershaw. Who has one of the greatest curve balls and one of the greatest sliders that have ever been thrown through fifty-one breaking pitches and the Astros Swung and missed at zero of them? Maybe no one was personally damage more by their cheating than Kershaw Houston. Astros have claimed that city's first ever World Series Championship Astros series important to this and it is damning but also right there's the National League division series against the cardinals the championship against the cubs. I mean there's just there's just a lot of examples at this point guys throwing a lot of postseason innings and he is catching the best hitters in the world at their very best and most motivated. There is a case to be made that it's bad luck but you're right. I mean. He has gone out when the team needed him to be. Clayton Kershaw and was a average major league pitcher. And you know you have to deal with that when you're doing the final accounting of him throwing a baseball my God. That's a huge part of it. So you were spending the day with Clayton to learn more about how he's processing all of that but it wasn't a normal day for either of you it was the day after the NBA. Suspended season because of the virus. So right you arrive at the dodgers silly together and then you immediately realize they're serious conversations happening about the fate of the baseball season. What was it like there? What was the scene like? I'm out in the lobby of the dodgers facility. And he's back through these double doors down this hall where the clubhouse in the lunchroom and all that stuff are the dodgers had shut down the clubhouse and everybody was freaking out so he was sitting back there with his teammates watching the news wondering if they were going to have a season wondering if they didn't have a season and there were no fans how they were going to get paid worrying about where they were going to live and what to do with their families worried about their parents. I mean the same thing that everyone was doing. It was crazy. Mean the night before that Wednesday night An editor Rachel had gone to the giants game. It was packed. I mean like we almost couldn't find a place to park. I mean we missed the first inning because there was so much traffic and so many people that we couldn't park. I don't know it sounds crazy naive now but I just sort of thought that I'd be following a ballplayer around pretty normal day. He came out to check on me. I think he felt a little guilty that he'd sort of promises ride along and we're going to go you know he's GonNa Pitch and work out and you're gonna go see the whole thing. It was interesting the degree to which he stopped being an athlete and I stopped being an annoying person. Follow him around right down in a notebook. He's also a pretty unique athlete. I suppose to experience this kind of day. And that sort of level of randomness with because there's absolutely nothing random about him and his approach and that's what's interesting to me. I mean I thought a lot about it because every kershaw profile is like six twenty takes a sip of water six twenty six he runs onto the field and IT 702. They sing the national anthem. And this goes on and on and on. It's sort of hit me. I was like well. What are these things have in common? What what is the through on? And it's not so much these obsessed with controlling everything instead. He sort of obsessed with time and managing it and understanding that it is currency to be spent so to see someone who is so intentional about how to be peak himself. If that's even what phrase on March Twenty six or on opening day to see that sort of start to disintegrate San through the fingers was very interesting. Did you get the sense that day? But any of that had even occurred to him yet. Because of the time we didn't know how long this is going to drag out. What these sort of formless stays would even look like. Did he seem worried about the fact that you know he might not be able to follow through with what should have been a very good season. Oh yes definitely was already like. They need to tell me what day. It's going to start because I can't. I don't know what to do every day if I don't have a day off in the future to back Tom all this stuff I mean. That's the thing he kept saying. I needed date. I need to know.

Mike Trout rips cheating Astros, calls for bigger punishment

"Happy Spring Training has been so happy so far. No I was GONNA say being the leadoff hitter is generally a good thing but not if the leadoff hitter for the Astros in two thousand one that might be a little bit dicey so on Monday Mike. Trout spoke in baseball circles. I really feel like it's words that are being carved on tablets might trout use. The Word Cheat. He noted the absurdity of the advantage of knowing what pitch is coming at this Take Note Jim Crane any express frustration over the fact. The Astra's haven't been disciplined. He spoke forcefully as forcefully as he has an N. issue baseball. And if you're the astros in your angry the world right now this might be the moment that forces you to look in the mirror I really feel like when Clayton Kershaw sees about the said something the Astros might dismiss it as well. Those guys are sore losers because we beat them. When cody bellinger said something they might think. Well what are you talking about your strikeout machine? In the two thousand Seventeen World Series Boba shed Gleyber Torres. Come out and said things they might think. Shut up you too young to say anything. One might. Trout says something that has to resonate even with the most defying the Astros. Because not only is a great players you know. He's also incredibly respected within the sport and they know him as a great in accepting person and so i. I sent on twitter this morning. That it's like getting yelled at by your favorite uncle. There's just something to it. What do you think yeah no look? I Applied Mike Trout. You know he's not always a man of many words. That's for sure you know. I'm sure he considered beforehand. What he was going to say he obviously knew these questions or coming to him so he took obviously a very strong stance towards not only the Astros but towards the commissioner so as one of the faces of the game. I absolutely applaud him for coming down. Hard on everything that's happened. So tell me how you think he's. Words would go over with a George Springer and Altoona Bregman Carlos Correa marlins not on the Astros anymore but certainly saw him early this spring address this because I feel like that they would just listen and say nothing. It wouldn't be any complaints among the Astros and Mike. Trout speaks in this way. What do you think yeah? It's a good question. You know for all the apologies. We've now seen the Astros gives since that initial press conference. I still don't know if there's a lot of remorse or regret at least I haven't been down there in West Palm was Houston. But that's the feeling I get from far that they did it. They know they're supposed to apologize. But they're still feeling of. We got away with it. We one where the champs so be it So I don't think that feeling of remorse. Is there now. Is that going to change? Because Mike Trout says he's lost respect for them. Probably not you would hope they. Would you know do a little inner self reflecting and sink a little more about their actions? But I think they're also it's also easy to say. This happened in two thousand seventeen. We don't care moving on and maybe that's what the sport itself does need to do at some point this spring and I feel like that is best for the Astros at this point. Let's face it. They've taken a lot of incoming shots they punch back the other day. I think it's time for them to stop worrying about trying to save what they've already loss. You know watching Carlos Correa over the weekend pushed back a talk about individual situations in the world series when they weren't cheating and I I thought it was absurd. Yes we were cheating in the first inning the second and third inning but in that run-scoring spot in the fence. We weren't cheating you know and to extend my a comparison the astros with someone who cheated in neighborhood poker game. Can you imagine if someone said? Yeah we dealt from the bottom of the deck with firsthand second anther. We played that fourth. Hand straight up like other players. Don't WanNa hear that and I feel like that while Carlos was passionate in trying to absolve Jose altuve and trying to draw lines. It's a waste of time. Their legacies in cement. It's over in terms of the Court of public opinion. No absolutely and we all know. There's only one solution for the Astros and that's to go out and win the World Series in twenty twenty and at least remove the cloud of suspicion for this season. When we're pretty sure they're not gonNA Poll any shenanigans released today extent. They have that is the only way two thousand seventeen as you said that legacy is incident. You know it's always GonNa be be doubt now. They're going to go out and prove that they actually are as good as we think they. They are at least as good as they've been the last three years

Red Sox legend David Ortiz shot in Dominican Republic

"And. Jeez. Right. Yeah. Big Papi is what we're talking about. David Ortiz is the former star of the Boston Red Sox. He still involved with the organization and has been on this program several times, actually, I think just about a year ago. Was last time he was here and over the weekend. Just let actually Sunday evening. He was shot in the back by a motorcyclist in the Dominican Republic. He was there on Sunday. He was shot in the back, some guy on a motorcycle approach David Ortiz, outside of the dial discotheque in Santo Domingo. And the bullet went through his stomach. He's in stable condition. He is out of danger, according to his father and spokespeople at that hospital after undergoing surgery, Leo Ortiz, who is at big Papi's daddy spoke to reporters outside the hospital after surgery and said that his son was safe. He's resting now and he is stable. That's what he said, in Spanish, a second person who was with or teas was also shot this as a television host there, according to his wife, they were both on their backs. It was. Very fast. He doesn't remember much because he was also in shock from the bullet wound. Apparently this was targeted multiple people have been detained in connection with the shooting. And it's unclear whether those detained include the motorcyclists who according to reports at least on the scene people that were in the crowd. They're actually captured this guy and beat the heck out of them until police came one of the suspects is being treated at the local hospital. So again, they're trying to sort out this morning, how many people were connected to this, if this was because this happened at a nightclub, there could be a lot of people who got caught up. But the good news is he is out of surgery. And, and hopefully we'll be on the road to recovery kind of a strange story that I it was being reported as a burglary. But now they're saying this guy just drove up on his motorcycle and started shooting. Does he lived there part of the time? I must families there. So I think he visits a lot. But I think he lives here. I think this is where his permanent residence. Well he had a home in framingham. I don't know. He sold it had big house here and had. Restaurant here for a long time restaurant didn't do too well, but he's exceedingly popular was when he was a player, and as you said he'd been here come, and he was more recently even than a year or so ago. He was just really. Very positive influence, spend a lot of time kids, very positive with the team the team. The log the guys on the team loved him the management fun. So fun to watch. She was really he is not a was. I don't want to memorialize him but he is a such a fun player to watch. Yeah. So being shot in the back. Oh, what kind of there was no out their stomach? What was the, the if I missed which you said the essence of why this person went after him? They don't they don't know at first when I before I went to sleep last night. This had just started to break and people were saying it was a burglary at a nightclub. But now this morning they're saying that he specifically was ambushed about eight fifty a gunman approached him from behind, and shot him at close range, and that according to some reports that gunmen and the police have not confirmed. This was captured and beaten by the crowd, but they arrested a bunch of people as part of this. So it'll be interesting to see why what the motivation was if he was really trying to take his money. I don't know according to his father, he was very lucky because he didn't have any damage to his major organs. But what the heck did Dominican? Well, there you go. That's there is no good PR going on for the Dominican Republic. Right. Being shot and beaten and all sorts of things killed. Yeah. No. Yeah. I think they're also there's also the, the rumor that was part of a larger shakedown a big Papi was this, you know, there, and hopefully, maybe when he starts speaking again, with family and police, maybe they're maybe he even has some insight that we don't know yet, but he is, like, Jen said he so lucky that the bullet went kind of clean through in, because that's. Would you consider him to be a legend as the land apply to him? Yeah. What other sports figures around now, who were with a rod is a legend. Okay. Derek jeeter probably also legendary player, I would say for the dodgers, he's still playing but Clayton Kershaw will be a legend people always pay attention to his pitching, but modern day.

Major League Baseball Preview: It's Opening Day 2019

"Opening day, and I cannot wait Madsen Yanks get everything started at one on five. I realize Harrison I was just looking over the schedule before the Mets and the and the Yanks are the only to apply at one zero five tomorrow one a Yankee actually one Mets for one zero five and then the other games will follow throughout to go around major league baseball right now, we welcome. And Scott Miller who's a national baseball columnist for Bleacher report scout amongst other things Scott happy opening day. I mean, this is this is a great grey day for baseball fans everywhere. A big slate of exciting action all across major league baseball. It is happy opening day to you as well. And yeah, it's it seems like it can't get here. Quick enough. I always say, you know, baseball more than any other sport has brings with it something that is unique that nothing else can say that simply as opening day equates. To the promise of summer, the promise of the last day of school is very close. It's getting closer. And who doesn't like the thought of summer vacation and whatever else and thought of war nights at the ballpark. Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of things that go into the other thing I would add to that. Scott would be the fact that you know, you have it there for you pretty much every night for the next six months, it's different than opening night and football way opening week, whatever it is. And then it goes away for a few days. And then it's once a week baseball. Once it starts, it is six months of basically there for you every single night. And that's what I love about it. Yeah. No question. I mean, I I know, you know, even you know going back as a kid growing up in Michigan. I grew up about thirty miles south of Detroit so back then I followed the Tigers. And, you know, just, you know, your kid, and you can't you know, you don't have your driver's license yet or anything. Thing every night the summertime you had a friend. You had you had your Tigers. In my case on TV. College. I had a great summer job at a state park in Michigan. Yeah. During my summers off in college and state park, quite often. I would be a permit but without front as cars came in. I take their money, you know, the three bucks or whatever cost command and a state park was over near lake eerie and not only were you outside in the summer. But I had a radio in that booth and I worked at three thirty to eleven thirty shift and listen to music up until about seven or seven thirty. And then I click over to hurry. You know him and Paul Carey telling me all about whatever was going on with the Tigers at night. And you're right. It every night every day there there there's something that just build slowly. And slowly, you know, like a great book read a chapter, maybe grabs you, then the next one. And then you go on and what the Mets in particular. And you're right. I mean, that's that's the beauty of what the Mets in particular. You get excited early on because the Mets own opening day. Matter of fact, they've won thirty seven of the west forty nine last year. They started started twelve and to Scott and everybody at least around here. At least myself I was excited about this ball club in and then they went into the tank naturally. So that book got pretty bad in a hurry. You look at this meds ballclub in the National League east in particular. Where do you rank the Mets right now in the NFL is heading in opening day? You know, I it not deduct a question. But is that's what's gonna be fascinating about the summers. I think anywhere from first to fourth. I mean, you know, depending on health depending on the way things go, I mean, you know, the National League east more than any division of the game. You had teams trying to better themselves trying to to to you know, deliver that knockout punch in the wintertime with trades and free agent signings. Dom, you know, I mean the nationals I think everybody talks about them losing Bryce Harper. And the funny thing there is I think a lot of people are kind of dismissing the nationals because hey, they lost Bryce Harper. That kid want. Soto is great Victor rollerblades is coming out. They're going to be good Phillies made their moves Atlanta won the division last year. You know, I like what the Mets did. I think they they they they made some smart moves. You know, obviously you start with the pitching. Graham, and how about the ground versus shirts or the mile. I mean talk about a great opening day matchup but him center, Dr Wheeler. I like getting Edward D as I mean, people Robertson knows the bigger name. I, of course, still and people say, oh, can I was going back to New York? But Edwin d as the this kid was as good a closer was in a game last year for Seattle. That's a great addition. You know? Behind the plate. You know? Wilson ramos. I think there's some promise, and it's gonna take health and has gonna take some, you know, smart play and Conforto needs to continue to improve. But you know, like, I said without doc in the question. I mean, I thanks go. Well, I think they're gonna content put it that way. I think you'll see a fourteen horse race down into the last into August and September and how about the National League overall. We don't need to go into the specifics of each division here. But you mentioned Al the National League east can be in the brave yet through the defending champs and natural good even without harbor Phillies. Clearly better their lineup on paper looks loaded Mets made some improvements. So those four teams should be battling there. I mean, you look at the rest of the National League. How do you feel the central is gonna plan everybody? I know loves the cubs this year people high in the cardinals brewers are pretty darn good. You're talking now we just went over to divisions in there are seven teams potentially to be the playoffs even with the reds improving. I still don't think that they're realistic realistic. To be playoff team. And then in the west I mean, yeah. At least have two or three teams fighting for the postseason. So Scott when you look at it, how do you see the wildcard plan out? I mean, you could give me the divisions. I but in the National League the Walker is going to be intriguing. Yeah. It is. Because you're you're right. I mean, you know, the cubs ninety five or more games. I think for four years in a row at you know, they they have a really good team. You know, the one team I'm keeping an eye on. I I'm not so sure about no walkie. I mean on paper, they look really good. But they're one team that kind of disrespect starting pitchers. I mean, they're they're success last year aside from the smart moves to get Renzo Kane and Christian yelich their success. Was that bullpen was phenomenal. Josh Hader is back and going to be really good. But you know, Jeremy Jeffress has a sore shoulder. Corey knievel sore elbow to start the year. Those were two guys that played a big role in that broke in the bullpen. So my question with the brewers. I think for them to repeat last year. They've got to have the bullpen pitch. Every bit as good as it did last year. And I'm not sure both sides are so volatile. I'm not sure if they're going to be able to match what they did last year. So, you know, that's why I'm watch wants Milwaukee. Cincinnati. Please is gonna hit like a zillion home runs in that ballpark. He's probably gonna drive the rats crazy with some of his antics. They'll be fine. Say Lewis is gonna be good doubt. Dodgers everybody talks about Clayton Kershaw unavailable for opening day because he's opening on the injured list, but they're pretty deep. And I think they still are the favorites in the National League West Colorado's right there. Again, you talk about all the teams that are contenders. I'm not sure. But I tell you what for the first time in ten or fifteen years, the Padres have become relevant. Manny machado. It's gonna be fascinating to see what he does especially after playing the villain, and I told her and I was shocked. You know, the Padres went the opposite way of what most teams do keep the kids in the minors to buy an extra year of service time delay free agency. They call up their kid Fernando taste junior is going to be the opening day lineup playing shortstop tomorrow as well. Next Chato and he's juniors right there next to Blad. Gratitude here is one of the best prospects of the game. So you know, everywhere you look a lot to be excited for we're talking about Scott Miller national baseball columnist for Bleacher report. Yeah. And that's Scott. Normally I feel like you could read the predictions from everybody in America that writes these predictions. Are you looking at it yourself? It's hard to pick against the teams who are consistently. They're hard to knock off the cobs hard to knock off the nationals. The dodgers, then maybe you take one or two different teams making the playoffs this year in the National League in particular when you look at it going into the year. Maybe I'm wrong. Greg me, if I am I see more parody than ever before you can make a scenario as we just mentioned a bunch of different teams. I wouldn't be shocked if any of those different scenarios happens where you can have three to four teams in each division competing for playoff spots. Yeah. I think that's true. I think that's that's healthy for baseball. Because I, you know, look we're coming off a season where attendance dropped about four percent last year and seventeen of thirty teams saw tennis declines. And there are various reasons for that. You know baseball will tell you a big part of the reason is the April and may weather last year in the east and midwest was really bad, cold, rainy and fans just didn't want to come out. I'm sure that's a contributing factor last year. Was the first year in baseball history. Whenever more strikeouts than hits. I think the way the games being played right now is a contributing factor to attendants declining. But the third contributing factor in my opinion, is you know, we've reached that stage. You know, we were tanking is kind of gotten away from that a little bit this year. But if you want to say tanking or rebuilding clubs have realized the middle's the worst place to be if we can't win we need to strip things down and rebuild. And I think too many teams in the last couple of years have have done that. And so what you've gotten is is, you know, fans in number of cities losing interest in the game because their local team is trying so hard it's basically stripping down rebuilding. So the fans are like, well, what's there to be excited about what you just said in the National League to that last point? I think finally in the National League at least you're right as you look. Around. You don't see, you know, a third of the league or more rebuilding. You see teams that they think they can win in that are giving their fans reason to hope and that is not the case. Of course in the American League's we transition narrow let's start with the American League east. Let me ask you this way. More concerned with the Yankees injuries slash starting rotation or the Red Sox bullpen heading into the year. Yeah. It's Baltar concerns. I you know, I I pick the Red Sox to win the division last year. And I'm leaning that way this year because I respect that Red Sox rotation. Chris sale, David price report, Selo and company. And also, I think the Red Sox where I like him last year, and I still sort of do that lineup. I think there are back at more strikeouts than hits in the game. There are fewer strikeouts. In the Red Sox lineup there. It's a nice mix of power in contact hitters on base guys guys that can put the ball in play. Whereas, you know, as we know the Yankees lineup is really exciting. But at Tanah homers, and and you guys are going to strike out a bunch. So that's sad. I would give the edge the Red Sox, but they didn't bring Craig kimbrel back Joe Kelley was under rated and that bullpen last year. He was a free agent went to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers. So. So the Red Sox bullpen is a work in progress. I tell you what. There's a chance that bullpen could make Alex Cora. Look not so smart after they made him look really smart in his debut season. As manager last year, you give the raise any chance to make ninety games for goodness sake or ago. Yeah. I think so I mean, you know, look Blake's now, you know, part of the fun. This year is is is is is it is every year is finding out. You know, what our guys gonna certain guy's gonna do for an encore Blake Snell is one of those. I mean Cy Young winner last year phenomenal. But the baseball history is stacked with all kinds of you know, one hit wonders guys that were great one year. And then they they did repeat the m-. The thing about baseball. It makes it so difficult is, you know, the the Mark of a great player is consistency over a number of seasons. You know, when you turn a guys baseball card over, you know, the statistic line. Doesn't jump out at you from one year. But rather over five six seven years is pretty consistent. And that's what Blake's now is going to have to build this year. He's got to build on what he started last year. And that's gonna be interesting. I liked the addition of Charlie Morton, former Houston Astro into the rotation in Tampa Bay that's going to help. They got some good things going on Tampa Bay.

Red Sox beat Dodgers to win 4th World Series in 15 years, cap historic season

"The Red Sox clinched the World Series title in game five with a score of five one Red Sox. They took the lead early in the game. And just kept adding on runs, and they're watching it all was WBZ's. Adam Kaufman, he joins us live from Los Angeles. Adam what an incredible series. Yeah. I don't know how long we have. But I I could talk for a year. It was remarkable what you know, what the Red Sox were able to achieve throughout this series throughout the postseason the entire regular season to capital of the way, they did with with another just convincing almost I mean, basically wire-to-wire win here in L A in game five and David price the dominance that he displayed and exuded over the course of the last couple of weeks to flip the narrative of this guy can never win in the playoffs. He can never win as a playoff starter to pitch them into the World Series to help them win the pennant and that game five against Houston. And now not only after winning game two in this series. But just a couple of days ago, but to then win the clincher with seven innings of shutout baseball after allowing a leadoff home run. St. peers a platoon player who was acquired back in July as as someone that was just gonna come in. And hopefully help a little bit homered twice at seven RBI. Three home runs. His last two games. And just be a hero of folklore in Boston sports now World Series MVP. You can't say enough and leading up to tonight the game eighteen innings long. What can you say about that? And then the comeback the next game. It's just all around was really good television and radio and radio. Well, you know, what I mean, never never mind television or radio theater? It was just it was incredible to watch. Whether you were viewing or listening from afar or had the opportunity as we did to be in the stadium. It was in in other worldly experience, you know, you consider that eighteen inning game that went until about four A M eastern lasts seven hours and twenty minutes was the longest game in postseason baseball history. Never mind just the World Series and then to sixteen and a half hours later have to be back there for for first pitch a game four and to fall behind four nothing going into their final three innings, and then just flip the switch as they've done. So many times this year, you know, JD Martinez at a great remark about how he's never been on a team before that had just has the ability to get punched in the face and show up the next day, and we're fine. We're good. And they they did this could have been a whole different series had obviously the Red Sox lose the eighteen. Game. And then don't recover from the four nothing deficit in game. Four all of a sudden it's to to going into game five the ace on the other side Clayton Kershaw who the heck knows how that unfolds, but the Red Sox in many ways, it's it's sort of cliche to say, it's almost mystical to think it, but it it it almost felt like the Red Sox won game five second. They won game four at the dodgers. They were just aflaid and the Red Sox role. Right. And you could see that. Yeah. You could

"From what we've read and if there's no lottery relief that helps you make the cash in the pick. Now, keep pushing it down the road that you can push Ethan down the road over seven years. Look Houston would get in Jimmy Butler. A guy who's a two way player a great to play. By the way, Tony told you the two teams I thought was slip. This year, slip dot crater slip, Philadelphia and Houston, and the rockets, and I know hardens have had a boo boo. And Chris Paul as well. Those guys don't look like so far the rockets of last year. So you get Jimmy Butler. Yes, it strengthens your team. But you better sign them in the off season. Native texan. So you figure you would better sign him. You'd better keep that roster together 'cause you have your hands. You can't make any future moves as it were pertain pick. I just think if you're Minnesota. And I know that if the rockets are good for few years these picks are eighteen nineteen twenty twenty three. I know. But sometimes this works Boston Philadelphia. You know, sometimes the nets sometimes it works to stockpile picks 'cause there's some other stupid game down there. That's willing to take. They were involved in thing this deals go through. Yeah. I think it's a good deal. I don't because I don't think there's a better deal out there. Manny Machado is expected to leave as a free agent Clayton Kershaw and young Jin Ryu are also free agents will is there more than the season. On the line for the dodgers tonight. World Series expert picks: Will Red Sox or Dodgers win it all?

"Teams after I saw every one of them playing person Red Sox Astros, Yankees, Indians brewers dodgers and that order. I absolutely think the Boston Red Sox have a better club that the dodgers. And I think they'll win this in six or seven I agree on the six and seven. I don't see us going to sweep like so many people do and part of it is there's not a lot of experience on both sides against you know, the top tier pitching Manny Machado in. Brian dozer have seen Chris sale at ninety seven ninety two and done some damage against them. And the same thing goes with Clayton Kershaw JD Martinez being in the, you know, the front of the order in owning Kershaw relatively in in eleven at bats. Do you sense that the key to the series is the field period? And who could feel out the other team quicker? Well, I think that's part of it. But in a short series in for me in any any series. It's about the pitching in. I am concerned about Chris sale. I'm not as concerned anymore. As much as I was about Kershaw. He's got the Kershaw. Although he's more of a craftsman. Now, you've got three lefties going for the dodgers you got to in the rotation going for the Red Sox. I'll take my chances with the right handed hitting Boston Red Sox against those three lefties. I think that could be a big big advantage when you are looking at a JD Martinez in the middle of the order, Mookie Betts, Bogaerts Nunez, those guys that hit from the right side. I think they're going to do some damage in Fenway. I think it's gonna be a different game in LA. You know, I I worry about them pitching to die like, Cody Bellinger. For example. I think he had to keep the ball up on him. He's an uppercut swinger. You put the ball down. You may never see it again. I think these are pretty quick pitchers at I think the way they pitched the opposition is going. Is going to determine who winces, and that's not a genius comment. Are they it's all about the pitching, no doubt? And I think the way that the the Red Sox has set it up where they have Chris sale going game one David price game two, and then the unknown so ripper Selo and Nathanael have all the will be coming out of the pen in the first game or two depending on what goes on in. Do you sense it they're they're protecting themselves from a a short start from occur sailing game one? Right. I think that's exactly what they're doing. I don't think I would even though they did it all year long. I don't think I would pick up these back to back. I think they are doing it. Look, I think Alex Cora was the manager of the year. He and bo-, you know, bowl mill with the athletics. I don't say anything that guy does. But sale, you know, just coming back from the hospital probably lost a couple pounds said he couldn't afford to lose place at the game of his life. Can he do twice in a row? I think that can that's why I think the Red Sox are a little bit better team at this point of the year much better during the season. But you know, you gotta give credit for the dodgers. They scrapped themselves back into this. They one and I give him credit. I just don't think I think they're going to get get up managed. I think Alex Cora and the Red Sox front office is gonna do the job. A former staffer the Astros and Mariners currently with clubhouse corner dot com is kind enough to join us here. Cambio tonight. Drew harvard. Kevin Franson, we are previewing Dame one of the World Series tomorrow night at Fenway Red Sox dodgers Clayton Kershaw. Chris sale. We've been talking about the pitching birdie. I do want to get more into the offense on both of these teams. We're talking about a dodger team who set their franchise record two hundred and thirty four home runs this year. And then he had the Red Sox knocked around. The Astros was twenty nine runs in five games. Jackie Bradley, jR, driving and nine in the AFC. Yes. So tell me about the offense for both of these teams. And really who do you think has the biggest advantage? But I still think it's the Red Sox the wildcard for me could be mad Kemp he won't be starting at D H. They have to of course, and us mad count in their order in the middle of the order behind Machado and in front of Brian dosier. They're using dosier as well. It's mad Kemp that kind of scares me on the Red Sox. He's the great unknown. He can hit the gaps. He can hit the ball over the played as well rested. He had a terrific first-half tailed off in the second half. He's the guy that when you put put all the chips down now Matt Kemp may pick him up. So he's a guy that scares me in the line. David freezes quietly under the radar. They have some weapons. No question. We all know what Justin Turner can do we've seen. What Chris Taylor can do. This is a very very good club. You've got a pitch to bell. And you're like I said they've got to keep the ball up. The bed is is make them swing at it. Get away from the uppercut swing. Yes. Of course is dangerous. But on the other side of the ball, Mookie Betts. You know, Mookie Betts when I saw him first off in the Arizona fall league. He was playing second base. He was far enough of the best athlete in the air that year. This guy makes things happen. Then he's followed by Benintendi. And granted he's a left-handed hitter. But he can smack the ball, and how do you pitch to JD? So I think these are very well balanced teams. But I think pitching and Fenway is going to be a little bit too much for the dodgers. And I think they're going to lose at Fenway, maybe two games. And then we'll see what happens from there. Yeah. I think it's huge. If you know, especially the the Red Sox hold serve then they can play around a little bit not play around. But having Mookie come in and not really be afraid of like he's going to cost us. Oh, no. Because when he was there this year and even in the past that you could play. Yes. So much range. We all know that. No question about it holiday. Would you like to pick up a Nathan? The scrapping. You know? How would you like to have a number three starter name Nathan Valdez control the ball a hundred miles an hour who the dodgers had at one point. And now he may win a game against you. I mean, there's so many corks to this when you can get a guy like a ball deep during the season as your number three starter. You know, I just love it. I love it for both teams Verney who's your who's the guy you worry about more at the back end. Is it kenley or kimbrel kimbrel against this team? By the way, one for thirty one guys that are on the in the lineup for the dodgers won for thirty one against him. Well, I would never ever say a bad word about kenley Jansen. Is on his game right now. He scares me. But the Red Sox may put these away before its time believe me, and if they can then kenley Jansen if they can't then kenley Jansen is to be reckoned with the guy is still great. I feel sorry for what he's dealing with. And I think he's gritty gutsy, but you know, kimbrough's no slouch either both. These bullpens are really really strong. These are these are two good teams. I don't think they're the best two teams. I think these are two good teams. What's your thoughts on Manny Machado? And just the way he's been pretty demoss postseason. I am old school my friends. It made me sick to my stomach to see what he did it at first base. Tasers secular. It makes me sick to my stomach to see him going into second day slake that and I think the thing that made me the sickest is when you say hustling is not my Cup of tea on a scout, my friends and the first thing that we fill in. There's three things can this guy play is he better than what we have. And number three. Can you play for us? And for me on my form. No he cannot play for us. There are teams that would love to have him though. Run to him. That's fine. You put that guy in the mid west or in some cities, you put them in San Francisco and watching my hustle watch. What happens for me? It's a way over the top. I didn't like it. I don't like it. And I think it's going to hurt him. I I. I think the one team that everyone talked about is the Phillies in him going to I'm calling because out here. He he killed. Yeah. Try this or New York or any other big market that he's projected to go. What do you think is agents said the reaction of his agent when he read those comments, please. You just saw it. You saw him hustle. You saw last game. He played hustling kept his mouth shut. But you know, what damage is done. He is not the type of guy that I think is gonna win you the pennant. I like us a scrapper much more. Yeah. You can knock the fence down. But you know, it's not all about him. You give me a Justin Turner any day of the week. I'll take that Bernie. I think I'm sorry. Go ahead. Why don't you finish your thought? Go ahead. I think in general this dodgers team is a little bit over the over the top for me. I think pointing to your muscles rounding, you know, your home run your home run trots a bit over the top for me. I was just curious on how fast that switch is flipped when you see a guy like minimum Chato acting this way because we see a pro sports, Bernie talent will usually Trump everything else. Yes it well. And that's why I said there are teams that are going to run to them they wanna badly and again for the clubs that I was with with the Houston Astros with the Seattle Mariners. I don't think we would have taken that type of demonstrative behavior. But the game has changed and you either love it or or get out of it and don't pay any attention. I happen to love it. But I don't have to like what I see from some players believe me ninety nine percent of these guys are much different. They're wonderful guys. And all it takes one guy to show off like that. And give other people a bad name. I didn't like it. I guess that clear. Hey, we got you a prediction with the Red Sox in either six or seven but tomorrow night who is your guy is it sale is occurs show. Or is it somebody else? No Kershaw gets game one. I think Kershaw is pitching very well. I worry about sale I worry about about the hospital the stomach. I don't know if he's less weight. I haven't seen him.

"I'm gonna continue to to do that. And even when they start hitting me, they have their heads in the sand. Clayton Kershaw is not that he, he's a strategist. Now he's a winner. He understands the game. He understands his opponent. He understands now what his stuff and how ply it and continues to win and be dominant. How do you assess this team now? Certainly with what they've done here in the last month. They they weren't as trustworthy as they are. Now. They're very, very deep, but I think the team's going to change when we get to the play offs. I think the team, you know when you go from thirty eight forty man roster, whatever we'll playing with right now that back down to twenty five going to all of a sudden not be the same team. I think that everybody is focused and they're competing to be on that roster. And it's one thing to win the division which I think they're going to do. But it's another thing to win the world championship, and I think that everybody is focused on that goal and that goals getting clear and clear the deeper we get into the season. Now with only nine games, it's it's it's a team that everybody is on the same page. Even if his, I'm only going to get two at bats and I'm gonna start against the left. But you know, I'll not starting against a righty, but I might be in there the six. I'm being there for defense. I'm going to be pitching probably only going to get a batter. I would love to pitch. Inning or to. I used to be a starter home or lever this. It's a team of tr, maybe the best roster and all. But you know, they, they have have sold out now to the goal of of doing the team thing. It's not about, oh, there's two hundred possible at bass left in the year for me, and I wish I would get them, but I'm only going to get a hundred because we're tuning this team. This team is locked in on the goal winning. Hope you have a great weekend, their oral with the bobblehead doll in. Certainly a lot of fond memories there and it's great to catch up with you. Hear from you. I watch your show and I listened to your show and it's a lot of fun. I learned a lot. Thank you. We appreciate it. Oral well, love to have you on again. All right. See you later. That's all Hershiser World Series champ and he's part of the dodgers telecasts team, but show Davis Davison spectrum sports net LA it's Orel Hershiser bobblehead doll coming up the home finale on Sunday against the Padres courtesy of your. So Cal Honda dealers, the bobblehead commemorates the thirty year anniversary of his fifty nine consecutive scoreless innings. And I know you're doing the math and you're going wait a minute. Now. Nine innings per game six because no omega so six consecutive shutouts. So that gives you a fifty four and then you tack on five. And it's one of those where you look at demise yo and his hitting streak fifty, six game hitting streak. What's the closest we've come to that was Pete Rose at forty four? I believe what's the closest to fifty? Nine consecutive scoreless innings in the last thirty years. What's the closest we've come to that? I'm curious if we're closer to demise ios fifty six. So Pete was forty, four game hitting streak. DiMaggio with fifty-six efforts. Have that praise for clean Kershaw of all time from him. Yeah, that'll make some headlines polling. He also talked about the greatness of Tony Gwynn if you ever want a nerd out on baseball, look up Tony Gwynn's career stats, Aaron, judge. If he stayed healthy this year would be at about four hundred thirty or four hundred and forty career strikeouts in three seasons. 20-win had four hundred thirty four strikeouts in twenty seasons. Yeah. Well you took pride in not striking out these guys. It doesn't matter anymore. So what if I strikeout back then if you start got one hundred times like everybody. New, you struck out one hundred times. It was an embarrassment efforts, and if got a hundred times, you'd better hit fifty home runs to make up for it or at least forty. All right. "Clayton Kershaw will join us on loan for the dodgers. Kind of fascinated with the Dirk Nowitzki coming back for his twenty first season. But what I think he's been able to do the last couple of years is is figure out what that role is an embraces role because he's no longer the star that team. You do go out to sea Dirk Nowitzki, but you know, he's not the future. He's not even the president really. You know, you got Luca Danni chick who's coming in Dennis Smith junior and you're trying to have building blocks there. I don't think it can be a negative if you have dirt as far as preparing to play practicing time, put in, that's what separated. Dirk, from a lot of players is he had this workout regimen and he he and Steve Nash would workout constantly constantly playing one on one. Even the exercises that Dirk was doing was different than other NBA players. But you go back to that draft night. Somebody should do a thirty for thirty on draft night trades. Like what? If they didn't happen? If the bucks had kept Turk Novitski. You know, because it was a straight up trade for tractor trailer. Olden Polynice and Scottie Pippen if Scottie Pippen had ended up in Seattle and politics with the bulls, there's certain moves that have been made that have changed a league chance, change the landscape over a decade or fifteen years. You know, if if David Robinson doesn't get injured and hurts his back in and sits out in the Spurs win the lottery. What if Duncan ends up with the Celtics when Rick Pitino is there, there's so many of those stories and those are draft night trades, but just things that happened and they happen for a reason and how it changed the history of basketball? Yep. There's a lot of little ones that are sneaky. The sons drafted Rajon Rondo and sold him to the Boston for cash considerations. Yeah. But you can go back and you know there was the the trade with Kevin love that was a draft night, trade right? Polish OJ, mayo, mayo, and Kevin love. So a lot of those crazy traits and how they affected the the NBA the future, Clayton Kershaw dodgers pitcher, seven time all star three times Cy Young winner, joining us on the program. So they're hanging back and just enjoying some baseball. How important is it for them to see you see, dad pitch and pitch at a high level. Well, pitch at a high level would be great.
