Senators beat Rangers 5-3 to spoil Patrick Kane's debut

"The debut of a new ranger was spoiled by a pair of old ones as the senators earned a 5 three win at Madison Square Garden. Derek Broussard scored twice to back fellow X ranger camp Talbot, who stopped 29 shots. Talbot denied Patrick Kane with a pad save with 5 minutes left in the third. Cain was playing for the first time since the rangers acquired him from the Blackhawks this week. It would be nice to kind of settle in. Get a couple practices and kind of understand the way they want to play. The blue shirts led three to two until Broussard scored on an assist from Claude Giroux, who provided the tie breaking goal less than two minutes later. I'm Dave fairy.

"We do like to insert a lightning round in these conversations. Are you up for one? Sure. Excellent. All right, Claude, is there a stereotype that you personally had a hard time letting go of? Yes, a lot of them. I'm a person of my society and my time and there are a lot of stereotypes. Stereotypes about athletes. I wasn't athlete. I felt the threat of being seen as an athlete. But still, sometimes, that was one that, oh, that's a stereotype. I shouldn't perhaps I should see behind that. Yes. It's comforting to know that even a world expert on stereotypes is not immune to them. Yeah. Nope. What about, is there a self affirmation strategy that you're particularly fond of in your own life? I can think of relying on them throughout my life as an African American. There's always available the possibility that you were being discriminated against. And that's what gives you that's part of the weight, the psychological weight of being a minority, is that you know the stereotypes. And you know how you could be seen. And you know it could have played a role in this outcome or that outcome. So my churn, my trying to work through that situation. I try to be as thoughtful and evidently based as I can be in coming to those conclusions. You can't rule it out altogether. That this didn't happen because of that or you can't. But I wouldn't just fall into it easily. I try to really be careful about that. That kind of attribution. So when I look at my own life, my own career, and so on. There's an area where I see myself doing what I theorized about. The series probably stolen entirely from that habit that psychic habit of dealing with that. Ambiguity. Is there a favorite depiction in pop culture that you have of challenging stereotypes of thinking maybe a movie, a TV show, a song, a book, there is that movie of

Chris Kohls and Sebastian Discuss the Monster in 'Predator'

"Talk about this monster, Kevin Peter hall, 7 foot two, by the way, who moves. I mean, he moves, he's not like Chewbacca, like this lanky awkward person. He is athletic. I mean, the late Kevin Peter hall, when he's jumping from Locke to log, you go do, that is scary when he's lit up by the explosions behind him. He sells it so well. And it's shocking. I was watching the timer through the whole thing. You don't even see him until minute 44 or something, and even then it's the camouflage version, talk to us about the monster. Yeah, and actually the first time you really see the monster without the camouflage, the invisibility cloak or whatever. Is the moment where he's attaching some kind of mechanism to seal up a wound. Yeah, he's putting on a ton of putting on a tourniquet. To sort of, yeah, like a sci-fi tourniquet. And I screamed. And it just cuts to him for a quick second. And it's such a, I mean, here's the thing about monster movies, right? You want to hide the monster for a while. Yes. Because you want to build up the suspense. What does it look like? What does it look like? That's what they did with jaws, right? And alien. At alien, the problem with this technique is that 99% of the time, the monster does not live up to what you've imagined in your mind. Right, because your imagination is always always better. Always better. Always better. Not here. Here, the monster is scarier than what you imagine. You're like, holy boat, what is that, you know? I forget the guy who Sam Winston's. Do you know how they came up with the design? I think I read somewhere like he was on a plane with Eric Eric Eric Eric educated me. I am shocked. I thought I was the biggest movie nerd in this building. Eric educated me three days ago. Tell us the story, Eric. After the John Claude Van Damme in red tights didn't work, how did we get mister mandible? Stan Winston was sitting on a plane flying back from the location, I believe, and doing just sketches of what the monster could look like. And he was sitting next to his buddy James Cameron, who, of course, they worked together on a terminator and aliens. And Cameron looks over and says, oh, what's that? So it's like, oh, it's for a picture I'm doing. He explains the plot explains the monster. And Cameron just kind of makes an offhand comment. He mentions, I've always wanted to see a creature with mandibles and that, of course, ended up in the final design.

Batherson helps Sens beat Red Wings 6-3 for 4th straight win

"The Ottawa senators took down the Detroit red wings 6 to three in their Atlantic division matchup. Drake batherson had two goals and Alex to break it registered three assists. It's nice we can get the power play going and then our penalty kill is pretty good. Only give up a 5 on three, which is pretty good for how many penalties we took. Goaltender cam Talbot made 29 saves in the victory. The two teams traded goals through two periods, but then Ottawa pulled away. Claude Giroux, Tyler Mott and Austin Watson all tallied in the final frame to force the decision in favor of the senators. With three on the power play and two short handed, 5 of Ottawa 6 goals came via special teams. I'm Jeremy cake over.

"Officer who says, look at that Crone that hole right there. And the game works with us. I said, I don't think that's a chronic at home. So he was there when the wildlife officers were searching your house. And he was like three years old. Four. So Cassidy yeah, he said, there's a crawl dad in that hole there. Well, so I don't think there's a crawl that hold on. And he said, oh yeah, it is. He determined to show him. So he went and got his mom's bucket that he wore flowers in and took the spout off of, but I was pulling water right into that hole. Took it and filled it clear up. Nothing come out of here. So he went back and fills it back up. Porsche ran there again, waits there, pretty soon he has great big crawl that comes out of his whole worst. Oh, he does. And they always say, I told you. So this is a technique you knew would work, get the crawdads. Yeah. I wish the pawn went too far. It was like, I mean, it's a little ways, actually. So you remember when this happened? So you have memories of the law coming to your house to get your debt. What's going on? I thought it was, I thought it was a fun day. I don't know. I don't know all these people were here. We're having a good time. Let me teach you how to catch a crowd out, big guy. Come here, man. I didn't really realize it's very bad to make game one Friends. Now that's a good story. They didn't teach those game wardens about crawdads? And hey, not to digress, but Cass called it a crawl dad and not a crayfish, which indicates to me that Ohio might actually be southern. Louisiana is exempt. They call him crawfish down there. And another thing Claude called it spotlighting, not Jack lighting, because nobody from the south ever called spotlight in the deer Jack lighting. Hey, I'm Giannis to tell us. And I'm Jordan Budd. Jordan and I have spent our lives in the outdoors, both as hunters and professional guys. And on meat eaters, newest podcast, gear talk, we're taking the ultimate deep dive into the tools and gear we rely on in the field, season after season. We're talking classic. Don't leave home without it. Staples to the cutting edge and outdoor equipment. Listen to your talk on the iHeartRadio app on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Let's talk about something that matters. And I'll tell you what matters is wives. Wives usually have a strong intuition, especially when it comes to their husband's friends. If you want to talk about wit and nsync, a wife is often like a lightning rod for this kind of stuff. But oddly, misty has always really liked Brent Reeves. Anyway, here's Claude talking about how he still didn't really know why the law was at his house. And I even then I still, I'm rocking my brain. I don't know what's going on. I mean, no one's really told me he's saying. So I go outside and they're at my house for hours. At that time, I was remodeling my house. This doing a little remodeling. I mean, I have a money. I'm just trying to make the place look a little nice and what was. So when my wife had come out side, when I sat on, I had a bench out there in front of my poor chair, a setting on it. I was bummed as you can imagine. I have your handcuffed or anything. No? So they knew you weren't going to run off. No, I mean, they had, yeah, of course. I don't know what they had before because I didn't know. And they're searching your house. Oh yeah, they're tear it apart. I mean, every inch ever. So my wife comes out the front door and she whispered in the air. And she said, bob and dawn, I bet you. And I looked at her like she was crazy. I said in there, she said, I bet it is. She said, you thought you guys were friends. So I got sniffed it out. Yeah. Which, you know, she never did. Even when it was going on, she was always, oh, 'cause RT would call me quite a bit. And I think if he was really being honest with himself, he could tell you that bob would call me a lot. Say, you want to go out tonight, you know. And it really ticked my wife off. She was like, you know, Clyde, you're going to get yourself in trouble. Wives know, they just always know. So I guess when that all happened, when I finally did figure out, I think one day officers, he hand me all my charges. All these papers. I'm like, huh? Then we're all mine, huh? Guys, it was a bunch. Wait, what did it read? On the front end, but it was all written up from the court. Saying all these charges. And I actually think pages and pages. I mean, it looked like a catalog. You know what I mean? And I said, I look at him. I said, I'm talking mine. He said, it blends all yours. And then the one officer asked me if I knew about Thomas. So when he said that, I was like, okay. That was my friend, I just got me right there. This was a tough moment for Claude. I don't know that I'll ever know, or at least I hope I never do. What it feels like for someone you thought was your friend to actually not be. And what makes this so wildly interesting is that RT, even 30 years later, still has mixed feelings about it. And we know we can't blame RT. He was just doing his job. He was defending the law. I just think it's interesting to look at it from the other side. And this goes back to our original commentary on what a weird human experience and experiment that undercover work is. You know, and at that time, when that happened, like, say, I'm early 30s. And I just felt like someone kicked me right in the teeth. I mean, kicked the legs right off under me. So here this guy that I thought with my friend, that we did a lot together. And had a lot of fun together. And had a, I mean, it's hard to say a real friendship, but you said to me earlier that you can't fake the kind of, oh, absolutely not. And I feel like that's what RT told me when I said across from him. Is he said, man, he said, Claude was a good guy. He said, he said any other situation, we probably would have been really best Friends. Yeah. We had a lot of fun together. I mean, we really did. I mean, just like, say, they're just stumps after you can't fake. I mean, there's times that I can remember leaving looking back our team, he'd be laughing so hard. Tears coming out of his eyes. That was on a lot of different occasions. Yeah. Getting back to that question. You know, I was so depressed to think that that happened to me. It was like, I couldn't get over for a long time to think that he'd done that to me. And I almost wanted to revenge, you know? And but you know, he was doing his job. That's what he gets paid to do. That's how I look at it and I look back at it. And he did his job, but for me, it was just, it was not real. I mean, that actually happened to me. I mean, you can ask my wife and them times for a first two or three weeks. I didn't want to be here. I was in a real bad place. It was a dark time for you, told me. There was. Yeah, and then I just didn't know if I could pull out of it. I mean, it's for the audience that's listening right now. Unless you're there, you know, you can't have that feeling unless you know. Let's just actually happen to you. But with that said, I brought it all myself. It wasn't like anybody I twist my arm to make me do what I've done. From the very beginning, I appreciated Claude's honesty about this whole situation.

"He went on a big spill about that. He said, game war, you know, he just, yeah. So with that afternoon, I think his ad for bob had showed me a turkey in the back of his van, a turkey fan that he had had fanned out, and you could tell he's a fresh kill. He had a spurs there and he said he had just killed it. I think he was trying to gain my trust a little bit, okay? Yeah. Of course you know, back then I couldn't see past my nose. 'cause I'm like, what is the odds of a game warden here in the book? Like an undercover that wasn't even a thing, was it? No. I mean, I think you probably heard about things like that, but I've never thought would ever happen to me, of course. Right. When he showed me that, I was like, I kind of trust him to say, oh, I don't think maybe cabinet has got what he's talking about. Well, then right after that, bob started wearing yellow lens glasses. Sunglasses, and then he grew a full beard, because when I first met RT, he was clean, I had a mustache, big mustache. After that, he wrote a huge beard. So he knew he got busted from looking the same even have to change up a little bit. It's so interesting hearing the different sides of the same story. RT told us about this one, too. Claude wouldn't have known it, but RT was scrambling on the inside, but he was also learning. Hence the new beard and sunglasses. In our secret agent man podcast, RT told many of the ins and outs of living undercover and becoming close to Claude. They poached turkeys, spotlighted deer and became the closest of Friends. Here's a funny story. Which ought to dear one. Bob and dawn, I don't believe it was with us that night, but we had shot a four down below my buddy Mike's house and works her down the Woods and cold probably 6 or 7 inches now on. I think we're a clear down in the Woods. Just so we can get caught. And pretty soon, bob and Don snuck up on us. Of course, please all good friends then, you know, everybody knows everybody. And he got up on snuck up on us and said, game Orton boys. And we was freaking out. 'cause I thought it was a game warden. Well, that would be me now, it was again. But man, he told that story a few times that man he would laugh. Looking back, Claude says the signs were everywhere that his relationship with bob Thomas was suspect. However, this type of undercover work was entirely new and Claude was like a deer in the headlights, especially when the relationship came crashing down. For Claude, it was the surprise of his life. One that would change it forever. So RT talked about how he said he was closer to you than probably he was anybody he ever worked. Yeah. Which is interesting. And part of what we talked about was what was it like to be turned in by somebody you really thought was your friend? Yeah, that was probably the worst thing I've probably ever happened to me to be honest with you. You know, we hung out for a long time together. And I think, basically, about every day. I mean, there might have been a day or two that we didn't hang out, but for the most part, weaves together. Me and him and dawn a lot. Yeah. So when that morning, 7 o'clock in the morning, you know, they hit everybody at 7 o'clock in the morning. All the guys that were involved in the sting. Yeah. Well, I've never been in bed that morning, and we've been up late night. I guess my place was party central, that's where everybody come to when we just hang out and have a good time. But anyhow, that the morning that happened, I kept hearing all this pounding on my house. I thought it was dreaming. You had summertime and my wife finally gets me up. She said you got to look outside. You're a big trouble. That's exactly what she told me. So I jumped up out of bed. Of course, I got long hair then, and as a matter of fact, I had orange shorts on, looked like I was getting ready to go to jail. So I looked outside and I seen all these wildlife officers and how many trucks were there. Wow, you know, honestly, I think there must have been my best recollection probably. 15, 15 vehicles pulled up to your house. Yeah, there's crown Vic Torres, you know, game board and trucks. A one towing Columbus news, times recorder, which is our local news. Oh wow, so they pulled up with a tow truck to tow your vehicle away. In the media was there? Oh yeah. If we're gonna film them pulling you out of your house. Yes. And they did. Yes. Wow. So you answer the door. Yeah, time I got my bearings together. What in the world, you know, I'm thinking, what's going on? Did it even occur to you that this is because of killing turkey's illegal? Nothing. I mean, you're just like, what's June 16th? I mean, it's summertime. Why is all these game wardens here? Yeah. So I couldn't figure out exactly what was going on. I mean, these people are yelling, open the door or we're busting the door in. Yeah. So I ran to the front door and opened the door, and when I did, they pulled me out the door, I wanted to know if I hadn't loaded firearms in my house, and they read my rights, and I still couldn't figure out they didn't tell me. It bob and dawn or whatever. Right, right. So I was, it almost seemed like a dream really. Looking out there and seeing all these game ward vehicles, and I thank our local game warden. He was probably a second guy through my front door. The guy you saw in the station wagon following you. Yes, yes. And like you say, he still comes in my store this day. I mean, I have no, I have no better feelings. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. He's doing his job. I find Claude's ability to move beyond the past to be unusually developed. Kind of like when you watch a fisherman skilled with a knife Filet-O-Fish. What they're doing is very difficult, but it looks easy. I'd say Claude's position is rare. Here's Claude with more. After they read my rides, we go back inside the house. And my phone's bringing off the hook as you can imagine. We're back in India, you know, you had the answer machines. So good buddy, my mic, and we're still good buds this day. It's probably my best friend. His wife calls me. The game just left there. Left his house. Yeah. Did they get him? Yeah. But they didn't have much on him. I mean, he didn't, he wasn't out. Sure. With me, per se that every day, like when I was going out, but his wife was in panic mode. She said, Claude, if you're there, answer the phone. She said, the game wasn't just left my house. She said, and I thanked her on the way to yours. And they would not let me get your hair in this message as they're arrested. Everybody's right there. All The Game Awards right there are less than everything. If you have their mate or turkeys and you better get them out. Oh, wow. You got it. And I was like, ah, really Jenny. I said, can you shut up now? You know what I mean? But yeah, of course he was just trying to do me a favor. If you remember, RT told us this exact same thing from the law enforcement side. In the intro, I said that Claude's son Cass was four years old in 1996. Here's a story Claude loves to tell and we're back in the bowling alley with Cass. They all come down on this, so we're outside. And like, it was June warm out and my son and said,

"Say it from here, but big kitchen. So there's a restaurant here. Yes. It's very nice restaurant back here also. So back here, there's two virtual gulf base, which will be I'm sure a big hit. So McConnell's bill is not a big town. So this is going to be like a hub for people to come to or like a real social. I'm hoping it's going to be a big fit for the mcconnells build people and I know there's a lot of people excited about it because you know there's nothing really here for the kids to do. Claude is 60 years old and wears fashionable dark frame glasses. He drives the late model Chevy Silverado pickup. The back seats are folded up and the floorboard is full of dewalt tools and construction supplies. When I open the passenger door, he scrambles to clear away work gloves and cabinet hardware still in the packaging. It's clear that Claude has worked hard for everything that he's got. And it's evident he and his family are these kind of standout people. The bowling alley in the pizza place called Maxwell's pizza are side by side overlooking the river. The pizza place has a rooftop dining area that's been voted as one of the top ten best rooftops in Ohio. Both of these businesses are being spearheaded by Claude's son Cass, a really sharp and kind fella in his early 30s. Cass was just four years old on Sunday, June 16th, 1996. He thought there must have been an early morning party at their house when all the vehicles rushed into their driveway. Not to be outdone by her older brother, Claude's daughter, Adrian, started a cafe in downtown mcconnellsville called the Bluebird cafe. And I kid you not. They served me the best breakfast I've eaten in the last 5 years. The place has top notch. It's become overwhelmingly clear to me that these Maxwell's have something special. And I haven't even told you that Claude runs a sporting goods store called Maxwell's hunting supplies. So we're in McConnell's Bill. He's introducing me to a man that we've met on the sidewalk. So this is the guy that is the podcast. So we just got done. Did you hear about that that we did a podcast on that? Yeah. My boys, North Carolina is going to totally go. How is that right? Down there and he said, yeah, they're not like this just happened. Rod is literally the first person we've met on the street as we walk towards Claude's hunting store. After a slightly awkward moment, I realized that I might not be the most popular man in mcconnellsville. Not everybody was pumped about some outsider talking about operation redbud without hearing the full story. But I went ahead and asked Ron appointed question. Yeah, so who do you know Claude Maxwell to be inside this community? He's a great businessman now. What they've done in this community is outstanding. I mean, with the blue bow and the bowling alley and the rooftop, you know, pizza shop. I mean, it's just terrific what he's done. I'm proud the whole family. They're all good workers. So I mean, he's like a pillar in this community. Would that be right? Well, I hate to say that. He really is. The whole family needs to be commended for what they've done here. Yeah, I appreciate it too. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry to walk up to you on the street, just shove a mic in your face. The mcconnellsville tour continues. We're now in Maxwell's hunting supplies. So we're walking in Maxwell's hunting and fishing supplies store. You call me Gary, but I know. The store is tidy and packed wall to wall and floor to ceiling with archery targets, dear blondes, and bottles of dough estrus. Behind the counter is a wall full of guns of all kinds. The middle of the store has hunting clothing and a bow rack. And in the back of the store, you couldn't fit another jig or crank bait on the shelves. We sell, Matthews, hoyt, and the late. And then of course, you know, ravencroft bows. Several different crossbow companies we handle. Big selection of fish and equipment. Yes, and we can walk one back through here, but yeah, give me the full tour, man. What I'm about to tell you won't make sense unless you've listened to our secret agent man series. We worked hard in the podcast to hide the identity of the man that we called target number two. This was the guy that RT Stewart became very close with. The guy RT so badly wanted to tell that he was an undercover agent because he liked him so much. Well, Claude Maxwell is target number two of operation red butt. If you recall through the undercover work of RT and his partner, they brought charges against 26 men, and these guys were convicted of over 275 wildlife violations. But when you do the math, Claude Maxwell received exactly 26% of those violations. He pleaded guilty to 74. When I first heard about RT Stewart and his undercover work, I was interested in highlighting the work done by the wildlife law enforcement of this country. The freedoms that we have as hunters carry a high price tag and part of the cost is making sure that the law is followed. RT's openness gave us insight into a hidden layer of law enforcement seldom seen. The world of undercover work. His stories were fascinating, and he was very good at what he did. However, what never occurred to me. What never crossed my mind is how these stories intersected the lives of those that he chased. I never expected to talk to target number two. To be honest with you, it was almost like he didn't exist. But oh, he does. And he's not who I thought he would be. Here's Claude Maxwell. Well, before this started before I met the undercover, I worked at a major drive-through in a bar. I worked there for probably 17 years. I met a lot of people, met a lot of great people. That was basically how I met the undercover agent was where I worked at the intentionally command to meet me. I had met the undercover guy. I mean, I could remember exactly when it was. And well, automatically, we hit it off pretty good. Of course, I think he was probably hoping we could hit it off pretty good, but yeah. We started hanging out and sword hunt for mayor, I guess. I mean, I don't know, but like you say, that's what I've done for 17 years. Claude was in his early 30s and 1990 5. He was married and had two children. He worked as a bartender, and it was here that he met bob Thomas, or at least that's what the man said his name was. But why was he here to meet Claude?

"Going to guess probably a year and a half to two years ago, maybe. And it was shut down. No, it was still operating when we bought it. And but it didn't look not even on the scale. It looks like today. It was just needed to updated, like say we owned a peach shop next door. So actually, my following law said, you know what, Claude and he said, 20 days, he said, yeah, I just buy that bowling alley too. And I was like, yeah, you lost your mind too. You know, so well, next thing you know, we come up for sale. So we bought it. And then we bought it, we shut the doors. And did a big remodel. I mean, we got it all turned down to the bear concrete. That's what was left. This is my first time to mcconnellsville, Ohio. It's a cute town of about 1700 people built on the banks of the Muskegon river in the southeast part of the state. Mcconnellsville is also where most of the 26 men indicted in operation red bud lived. If you've lived in small town America, there are certain people that stand out. They're woven into the fabric of the community and make it thrive. Their leaders, well respected, their contributors, and functional pillars of the community. We've just heard the voice of Claude Maxwell. There was ten lanes of bowling here, so we tore three out, so you know, as you see, I would get the dart board. Pole table over there. You can't say it from here, but big kitchen. So there's a restaurant here. Yes. It's very nice restaurant back here also. Well,

"What was left. A Recipe for a Hollywood Fight

"Michael viner was the owner of dove publishing. He had a number of decent books that came out in the 90s, the most famous one was you'll never make love in this town again. And when I was dating Jermaine Jackson's ex-wife, Margaret Maldonado. She was working for him at the time, but for Michael viner. And one day she sneaked me in early copy of this salacious book, and no one had seen it yet, Margaret got the proofs and begged me not to show or tell anyone about it. I said, no, no, I won't. I'm not going to write about it. I just want to read it myself, okay? So I go back to the hotel or wherever I was and start reading this book and the proofs and maybe two years ago, I read a couple of the more filthy chapters on this show. The book contains a bunch of stories written by three prostitutes and one actress about this sexual encounters with a bunch of different Hollywood celebrities. There was a Robin and Liza grier, Linda Hammond, and Alexandra daddy. And inside are all these lurid tales of what these girls discovered while having sex with the likes of Nicholson Warren Beatty, Don Henley, Bruce Willis, Robert Evans, John Claude Van Damme, Mickey Rourke, on and on. And a very, very detailed stories. Whether they're all true or not, I don't know. It's just the horrors point of view. So my jaw was on the floor when I started reading this. A couple of days later, I'm at Evans house for one of his great get togethers. Robert Shapiro, Geraldo Rivera, Jacqueline bessette, Beverly Johnson, Neil sedaka, a lot of luminaries in addition to the dynamic to all of Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty, who are always at Evans house back in the 90s, and now I have all this information inside me bursting out and I don't know that Jack Warren and bob know about this. And then my eyes couldn't believe what I was seeing. The publisher Michael Weiner walks into the party. And he lived a few doors down from heaven, so it kind of made sense, but I know all this information from the book he published and I grabbed Margaret and I go, what the fuck is he doing here? She's like, what's the big deal? I go, he's publishing a book about what a few hookers have to say about a few of the men at this party. But balls on this guy,

Climate Vandals Want to Destroy What They Can't Understand

"John's mirac, please do your worst. Thank you. Hey, Eric. Well, I got a new piece up at stream dot org that I think people find of interest. It's called climate vandals, want to destroy what they can't understand or replace. And this is okay. Your titles are getting longer and longer, pretty soon. They're going to be paragraph length. But please say that again. Want to destroy what they can't understand or replace. Okay. So what this is a response to that there's a wave of climate activists attacking famous magnificent works of art in museums, especially in Europe. Associated Press reports that the Vermeer masterpiece, the girl with the pearl earring. Of course. Climate activists attacked it with blue and liquid last week. They tried to constitute and splash liquid on it. They earlier this month, they threw mashed potatoes at Claude Monet at a Claude Monet painting in a German museum. And they threw soup over Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece sunflowers. Okay, now I want to be clear, you are talking about works of art that are part of the treasures of western civilization. Sunflowers, I don't know what did that go for $70 million or a $170 million few years ago. These are some of the most extraordinary works in the western civilization. And I don't know if you say it in your piece, but immediately, I think to myself, the climate activists are the Taliban, the Taliban destroyed those statues of those huge Buddhist statues. It's an amazing thing when somebody is trying to destroy or deface or vandalize something that as you say in your title can not be replaced.

"Climate protesters through mashed potatoes at a Claude Monet painting in a German museum Sunday to protest fossil fuel extraction but caused no damage to the artwork We're at a climate catastrophe says one of the activists from the group last generation which has called on the German government to take drastic action to protect the climate and stop using fossil fuels tweeted the two activists throwing what it says were mashed potatoes against the glass covered Monet in Potsdam's barberini museum The activists also glued themselves to the wall below the painting that was part of Monet's haystacks series The museum reports the painting was undamaged This comes after earlier in the month the British group just stopped oil through tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh's sunflowers in London's National Gallery That painting was also covered and undamaged I'm Julie Walker

Dave Carder: The Danger of Comparing Coworkers & Spouses

"When you begin to anticipate seeing this person more than going home and seeing your spouse, you are sliding. Sideways. People used to talk about if people say in ses, you know, it's just the anticipation of going to work and seeing them. And having conversation with them or having a cup of coffee with them, et cetera. You can do this. It's just very easy. We see our spouses at the two worst times of the day. In the morning when we're trying to get out the door, get the kids fed, get the books together, making sure everybody's happy, got their lunch, the shoes they need for the baseball practices or the karate closer. It's terrible. We had four kids. I know, okay? And then in the evening, you come back and you start the same thing in reverse and you go to bed exhausted. It's very easy to begin to anticipate seeing somebody who's fully dressed, Claude in the right mind, and who has been thinking maybe even about you, okay? It's just easy to do. When you begin to compare the spouse to this friend, saying,

"This month we're talking about visionaries. Today's visionary lived their life challenging gender and questioning identity. They refused to be defined or confined by the societal norms for women in the early 20th century. Let's talk about Claude cahoon. Claude kahun was born on October 25th, 1894 in not France. While alive, Claude used she her pronouns. But Claude for much of their life spoke about living a gender neutral existence. So for this episode, we'll be using they them pronouns. Claude came from a highly intellectual middle class Jewish family. Their father, Maurice Schwab, owned a newspaper. Their uncle, Marcel Schwab, was a renowned symbolist writer, and their grandfather, David Leon kahun was an influential orientalist. Claude's mother struggled with mental illness. So Claude was mostly raised by their grandmother. It was from her that clot adopted the last name kahun. After some anti semitic incidents at their school in France, Claude did a brief stint at a boarding school in England when they were 12. But their mental health began to suffer in their teen years. They struggled with anorexia, suicidal thoughts and crippling depression. When Claude returned to Nantes, they met their soulmate and lifelong partner, Suzanne Malay. Their first meeting was electric and their relationship was characterized by their love of art and similar schools of thought. During a time when two women in a romantic relationship was seen as unconventional. Claude and Suzanne were able to disguise their relationship with stepsisters. When Claude's father remarried Suzanne's mother years later. Around 1919, Claude and Suzanne moved to Paris. It was during this period that the couple adopted the gender neutral names of Claude cahoon and Marcel Moore. The transition to Claude was a rejection of sexual and gender norms. In Paris, Claude studied literature and philosophy at the sorbonne. They and Marcel began hosting salons for forward thinking writers and artists to discuss social justice issues. Claude had dabbled in photography as a teenager, but it wasn't until the 1920s that they began investing their time and energy into the medium. With Marcel's help, Claude produced compelling, highly staged, sometimes playful images of themselves. The demonstrated their place on the fringes of the surrealist movement. Claude would orchestrate and pose for the photo, while Marcel would snap the shot. It was a collaborative effort. Claude was styled as a variety of characters and genders. Usually with an element of undermining societal expectations for women. Professor David gesi at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago described Claude as an artist who turns the camera on themselves to see who else they can become. For Claude and Marcel, the photographs were less about producing art and being famous, and more about being free. In addition to their photography, Claude was also producing literary works. In 1925, they published heroines, a series of monologues that contained witty comparisons of female fairytale characters to the modern day view of women. 5 years later, they published a collection of poems, dreams and essays featuring surrealist photo montages called Ava non avenues. The goal was to condemn conservatism in France. With fascism on the rise in the 1930s, Claude became more involved in politics. They joined a French association of revolutionary artists and writers. Many of whom were surrealists. Taking advantage of their growing popularity, Claude used their art as a form of indirect activism against the French Communist Party. In 1937, Claude and Marcel moved to Jersey, a British island between England and France. Claude still produced literary and photographic art. But their connection to the broader world was minimal. The local Jersey residents referred to them as Les madams, meaning the ladies. Claude and Marcel witnessed nazism spread throughout Europe. When the Germans invaded Jersey in 1940, the couple did not go down without a fight. Because of their unsuspecting outward identity as two older women. They were able to secretly spread anti Nazi propaganda among soldiers. They wrote short messages on small pieces of paper under the guise of an unhappy soldier. The messages included sentiments such as the war was lost. Hitler was a vampire, and it was time for the German troops to look out for themselves. Cloud and Marcel slipped these notes to cigarette packets, uniform pockets and any other nook they could find. In July of 1944, Claude and Marcel's resistance came to an end when they were arrested and sentenced to death. They were released almost a year later when the island was liberated from Nazi rule in May of 1945. Clod and Marcel returned home, only to find that the Nazis had destroyed much of their art. Claude's resistance efforts were recognized and awarded in 1951 with the medal of French gratitude. Claude cahoon died on December 8th, 1954 at the age of 60. Marcel Moore took her own life 18 years later. The two are buried together under a single gravestone, engraved with their birth names.

"Yeah, I'll tell you a funny story about the Ozzy thing if you want me to tell you, I'll tell you. When I went to the Grateful Dead, grateful that was my first concert. And then I think the second was Joe Walsh. There goes the neighborhood tour. And that was where he has to hit. So I'm thinking that I am. Live in life of illusion. Anyway, and I realized that when I would drink beer, I would see double. So at the Aussie show, I decided to take a parent underwear and take the elastic. Then build a black patch out of a cut up black T-shirt. And then take that on a soda add on and then if I saw that seeing double, I would put, and then I put on the underwear band Ozzy and I put it on and it would cover one eye. So I didn't see doubled. Yeah, the good old days of youth. Yes, I was still in high school at the time. Robin blade is here. All right, so I'll give you here is Claude Taylor trolling. Steve Bannon. He sent me this today. And I enjoyed it, so I might as well play it for you. Here we go. Okay, should be funny for this case. That's why I'm here today. Everybody, I'm never gonna. You're a fascist. You're a fascist. A late person has to follow attorneys. I love Claude Taylor. So that's Claude trolling, Steve Bannon, calling him a fascist, which is brilliant. I'll play one more time. Should be funny for this case. That's what I'm here today. For everybody, I'm never going to be you're a Sasha. They took on the wrong guy this time. You're a fascist. Attorney not to show in the country. A layperson has to follow as attorneys. So that's coming on in about three minutes is the great Claude Taylor after that we have congressional hopeful Mark judson. We got to support these people. And so I hope that Marc got to hear what happened with him in the army, major to see if anything is going on with that. I hope to God that the army major is going to get behind Mark. "That's it that's it. Keep the switch and the harm comes back out yet. The switch down comes back out I want to share this video to. There's a video of a brilliant variation of the ultimate machine. That is hysterically funny. It doesn't just do that like it starts to do it so It ends up at first looking like it's a variation on the ultimate machine like. Oh that's cute but then starts doing other things too because this particular box had wheels on it and can move out of the way so it's starting to avoid the person who's trying to hit the switch Or would play. Back prerecorded messages saying like. Hey hands off buddy. That kind of stuff and was really really entertaining. So we'll share that one as well. You have to remember that that particular very entertaining machine is based off this thing that claude shannon built for no reason other than it's called him just because he could He also had a collection of exotic unicycle including some that were because he was wondering how small could you make a unicycle before someone would be unable to write it For me that's any size. But i think me to. That would be any but assuming that you are capable of writing unicycle. How small could you go before you could no longer maintain your balance In fact he had a couple that i've heard are essentially unreadable He also lectured on using information theory as an application to playing the stock market though he never really published any work on this he did do a lecture but he didn't write a paper He also did really well in stock market himself although he wasn't necessarily employing information theory to do so he was investing in companies. That friends of his yeah. He made some very savvy. Stock purchases best on amazing work. That is these are. These are the people who were inventing like the basic components of computers electronics going on to form their own companies and he would invest in those and then they ended up being these these enormous companies..

"I understand designed a hidden panel in his office. That didn't lead anywhere at all. Just he just felt like building on. He just needed it. It made me think of a mitchell. And webb sketch where this wall must rotate be both here. And not here luke. Maye that's a load bearing wall but anyway he just decided to make one he also built a life sized electric mouse named these use after the greek mythology figure. That's the one who was stuck in the labyrinth. That had to find his way out in the car. Or minotaur depending upon your preferred pronunciations. After so this mouse what it was do as it would explore amaze and quote unquote. Remember where it come from Was going after some little metal cheese. Bits back so the the way. This mouse would go through the maze as it would go down a pathway and whenever the pathway would branch it would start to rotate right. Yeah so it would take one and then it would It could backtrack if it went down an incorrect route. Bright and then it could take the path it had not taken as opposed to you know if this were just an electronic mouse that had some collision detection. It wouldn't it could potentially just go back and forth down the same little pathway forever. Yeah but this was branching this one new. Okay well i. I already took the path. That's on the right. So i have to take the path that's on the left so it was pretty cool. He built this thing. And you know just for the fun of it. He built it. So also. probably my my favorite robotic piece of his eight juggling robot. Yeah i bounce juggling robot to be precise bounce juggling robot that wc fields to be even more precise yeah it was like having a like imagine drum head right and the drumhead allows things that are dropped on it like a ball bearing to be bounced on it and then two little angled platforms. That are serving his hands. That are a bouncing this again. These little sales yeah and they just kept it going in bounce juggling pattern perfectly. He basically made it out of like erector set pieces. Yeah you know just like you do. And then he wrote a paper on the dynamics of keeping multiple objects in the air simultaneously. It's pretty famous within the juggling community. Tried to read it. Why i actually wrote how juggling works for. How stuff works dot com in fact if you go to that that Article on how stuff works and you look up how juggling works. There's a video of me. Juggling in that article i still. I still say 'cause i juggle a little bit. I still say that we really need to do a video. Speth jag all right I juggled torches in mind. You ready to pick those up now. Okay well we'll we'll we'll start small. He also made a robot. That could solve a rubik's cube Just pretty amazing. That i mean. Obviously that needs suffer rubik's either. I i know there are algorithms for how to solve it at the most efficiently. And i've seen people who are really good at who just like it's like it's like magic you know the way. I saw her..

"Was a new miracle analyst at bell labs and they would go on to have two children together and He also during his time off from changing the world decided to build simple computer to play chess and he wrote a paper about programming. Computers and computer algorithms a lot of computer chess. Playing computers are still based upon the foundations that he laid out while he was working on this. Find that claude shannon in his spare time often did things that that most of us would be like. Well you could have a fulltime job doing that. He's acknowledged just do that. You know like to keep my hand in Around that time engineers at bell labs that time being nineteen forty-nine began to actually create the technology that implemented shannon's ideas and they built something called a regenerative repeater and the idea was that a bit could be regenerated perfectly and repeatedly as long as the bits weren't quote unquote too small so as long as messages weren't too small they could consistently regenerate a message And that would mean that you would again have no signals. You wouldn't lose any data in the process because you could just just as quickly as it was coming into the regenerate regenerative repeater. It would send out the copy. The same data message back elegant Also around this time as the engineers at bell labs were creating That that physical technology to incorporate shannon's ideas he's started to introduce the idea of bandwidth limits. This is what i was talking about. When he said it doesn't matter what medium you're using eventually you're going to hit that capacity. And eventually they started calling this the shannon capacity or shannon limit so it was again a very important idea that ended up being a playing a huge role in the telecommunications industry as well as just electronics and computing in general. So this is what gives engineers that goal. This is where they want to hit as close to that number as they possibly can to maximize the amount of data they can shove through any particular medium top speed so we often talk about data. Transmission speeds but speed is really kind of a deceptive term. Because it's not just how fast something gets from point. A to point b usually. We're talking about speeds that are approaching the speed of light. Yeah that's really fast. What we're really concerned with us throughput. Which is the amount of data that can travel at that speed to get from point. Eight point beat because if you're dividing that data up into lots of of bits like a long string yes. Each individual bit is moving at the speed of light. But you still gotta get that whole string through. Yeah yeah it's it's the you know getting the caboose through the end tally. Yeah it's the idea of if the If we hear that there's pizza in the kitchen And we're all invited to go and eat it then. The problem isn't that We have a bunch of slow people on staff. Were all very very fast. The problem is the door is only so wide and eventually four or five of us wall just trying to cram threw it at the same time. So that's the difference between speed and throughput now twins areas. Don't usually of you in the face..

"Hair thinning or loss vomiting rash loss of appetite in nineteen forty seven as something else. Not involving. claude shannon happened that bell apps the development of the transistor transistor was a huge breakthrough. It meant that the world of electronics can move away from things like vacuum tubes and allow this other device to take its place essentially which ultimately led to the miniaturization of electronics. But it wouldn't be until claude shannon Published his concepts about information theory. That would let that be a functional item in the way that it became. Yeah yeah it was. Really this idea of digitizing information that shannon had that made this a practical device beyond just a especially that early transistor. It's enormous if you ever see of it. I mean compared to the if you think that billions of transistors can now fit on a microprocessor chip. And then you look at the first one. It's it's enormous difference. Obviously now This idea of digitizing information was pretty much what would allow the transistor to become useful. And also it's what would lead to things like encoding information onto storage media like a like a compact disc right. This is what would make not just processing data possible but the storing it. Yeah right it's it's kind of a really beautiful coincidence. That both of these technologies were being developed at bell labs within a year of each other as it turns out because in nineteen forty eight that is when cluj in and actually published his paper a mathematical theory of communication. Yes and that's available in. Pdf form will. We'll share the link because you can actually read his paper on information theory. And this is the one that i said earlier that you know people people who were information theory experts they say like this is this is like einstein coming out with the theories of relativity. This idea of a complete picture. Not just an idea. But a complete picture of an approach that laid the groundwork for digitizing information so it can be transmitted and stored now again. He was a theorist he could do not build this. He explained how it is. Mathematically possible right and so it left it up to engineers computer scientists to figure out. Okay if this is theoretically possible how do we make it real. What do we do to actually put this stuff into into reality and have it worked for us Now nineteen forty eight was when it was published..

"Ends For he was far more intelligent than i can. Ever hope to aspire you. Yeah you have to know. It's fine. I come to grips with it. Okay if you told me. Hey jonathan you're never going to be smart as say claude shannon or albert einstein. You most people won't be so i guess. Nineteen thirty eight. Claude shannon writes a thesis applying bulls approach to circuitry by equating zero one restriction as the off and on positions of a switch with an circuit. He was twenty two years old. This this had never been done. This never been first time. Anyone had ever said this certainly out loud and other thinkers have said that it would have taken decades for anyone else to have come to this kind of conclusion right. We could have been sort of groping around with other approaches for years before someone had come up with this particular of version. And not only did he come up with this idea but the way he. He presented it in his thesis. It was a very elegant and he would he would expand upon it a little bit later to the point where people said this is this is why he gets compared einstein. It's like einstein saying not just. I figured out this one component to how the universe works about being able to express it elegantly and have a whole picture right like it's like it's not just a fact it's a hill host of facts that are all support one another and it's like they say it's like you come up with a fundamental theory of science and unfolded all at once. This unpack it. It's just molly for everyone. So his these is also laid out how logical functions such as and or and not could be implemented within a physical circuit so building of logic gates. Now keep in mind this is all in a hypothetical slash theoretical right. It's not like he was. He wasn't building this mechanically or chronically. Yes the case may be exactly. Yeah he was he was he was laying out how this could be possible. Not actually building them himself. Nineteen forty claude shannon leaves after earning a doctorate in mathematics to teach for one year at princeton. And here's a story has a couple of different who has some alternate endings. Yes we will present you with the two that we know of but the story goes that he was teaching at princeton and while he was teaching a class he was holding a lecture a albert einstein himself opened the door and step inside and claude shannon kept going on with the lecture but obviously was very much impressed with the fact that this genius has walked into his classroom he sees einstein bend over and whisper something to one of the students in the back he sees that the student replies and then he sees that einstein quietly leaves the room he continues on his lecture at the end of the lecture he holds the student back and with great anticipation asks the student. What did this brilliant man have to say about. My lecture and my version of the story was that einstein had very quietly asked the student. Where are they currently serving tea. I've i've heard that he asked where the men's room was so it may be. There's where are they currently allowing you to p could possibly been at any rate. Apparently that became one of claude shannon's favorite stories. He would love to tell the story. About how albert einstein walked into his classroom and asks something completely not connected with what he had to say and that made him like just taking it and i thought well that that also tells you a lot about his his personality they did not take himself series in nineteen forty one. He joined a company for its research and development. Bell telephone labs and His work mostly focused on things that had to do with the war..
