"They want the <Speech_Female> patient business <Speech_Female> that join the <Speech_Female> network provides, but they <Speech_Female> don't want to abide by <Speech_Female> the insurance negotiated <Speech_Female> rates. <Speech_Male> How <SpeakerChange> does this all <Speech_Male> legally work? <Speech_Male> So <Silence> the contract <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> with the doctor being in <Speech_Male> the network is between <Silence> the doctor and the <Speech_Male> insurer. <Speech_Male> You signing <Speech_Male> another agreement <Speech_Male> with the doctor <Silence> this between the doctor <Speech_Male> and you <Speech_Male> puts <Speech_Male> you in <Silence> a negative position. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> Now the doctor <Speech_Male> is almost <Speech_Male> certainly <Speech_Male> violating <Silence> several clauses <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> in the contract <Speech_Male> that the doctor <Speech_Male> entered into with the insurance <Speech_Male> company and you could <Silence> wrap the doctor <Speech_Male> out to <Speech_Male> the insurer, but <Speech_Male> the <Speech_Male> reality is <Speech_Male> this doctor only <Speech_Male> wants to treat you <Speech_Male> if <Speech_Male> you pay above <Speech_Male> the negotiated <Speech_Male> rates. "But when I signed up for what was a 30 day plan with them that they offered me the first month I think was $10, but if I didn't cancel by a certain date, it went to the 45. So what I did, I use an electronic calendar when I'm my electronic calendar and it popped up on my days activities to cancel this. And boy that was pessimistic. I just up front. I was like, my family's not going to be open minded to this. Anyway, I'd put it on the calendar. And if I had not done that, I never would have remembered and I would have been oops next month with that $45 bill. So it really got me to thinking about all these trials we sign up for subscriptions we sign up for in all the rest. So I want to bring some money back into your life. And I want you to do this for yourself. I want you to get out if you get paper statements or if you do it online, sign in to access your checking account and each of your credit cards. I want you to do this in one sitting where you want through everything you're being billed for automatically. Whatever it is, it's billing you every single month, that you're just paying money for whatever. For things that, at the time, looked like a good idea. But since you're not doing an example of one is a lot of people sign up for a gym membership or a fitness membership and they just pay it automatically and they don't even want to think about the fact that they're consumed with guilt that they never go to the gym. So they just pay it and ignore it. Okay, so if you're paying a gym, there's a gym membership cost anyway, Chris is like. It depends on the month or something. It depends. It could be a lot more than that. I have no idea. I pay my son as a member of a big chain and we pay $20 a month for him. 20. Okay. So contract. No contract. Oh, by the way, that's always the key with the gym. Never, never, never not ever without exception. You never join a gym that makes you sign a long term contract. Because that is a con game. Because sadly, as much as we might like to change our habits and work out, most people join a gym, they have trouble with the follow through and sticking with it. So Jim marketers know this and that's why they try to get you in a multiyear contract for the gym. So that you are a paycheck to them, but you're getting nothing in return. When you do join a Jim, you always want to join one that you can join month to month or quarterly, something like that. But anyway, I digress because the big thing the important thing is to look through those bills and see what you're paying for that you don't use. Or things you're getting built for and you're wondering, what am I actually getting for that? Now what am I getting from Apple for whatever they're billing me for every month? Or what am I getting from Google for what they're billing me for? A Microsoft or any of these technology firms. Any gaming kind of stuff..

"Yeah, so I'll tell you how I do that. Often they'll have carts in the back of the store. So I'll sweep the store and it's like an hour. Try to avoid. Yes, it is an operation in my head. And I'll try to avoid buying things. I don't really need but like, hey, look at that, I'm going to get it. And then at the very end, is when I get a cart and usually you can find them in the very back of the store they'll be some carts around there that people have abandoned. And I'll get a card then and then I'll get the heavy stuff and then I go to checkout. In order to protect my wallet. But enough about that. We have a Costco question too from David. He says I have a Costco membership and mainly use it to purchase gas. I see they charge a $1 service feed my card at their pumps. This stinks because I'm not saving nearly as much as I thought. I'm paying for the cost of their membership in fuel fees every year. What do you think about this? David, I can help you relax on this. What that dollar you see is a hold. And it's where they just make sure that your card is good for the money before you pump the gas. And you are not if you look on your monthly statements, you're not being charged that dollar. It's only a pre authorization hold. If you are actually seeing the $1 charge on your Bill, we got to talk.

Understanding Total Compensation for New Job Opportunities

"You're working from home do you know. Is the company you work for your boss spying on you. Wait till you hear how much that's going on. So i've been talking to people who've been using the advantage of the labor shortage to bid up their pay going usually to a new place to work. But there's an aspect of this. This come up twice recently in my conversations with people that i want to discuss with you and that is the pay alone is not the only thing you should be looking at when you're looking at new job opportunities that the marketplace is offering you right now so what else matters all right so you worry about what. The monthly paycheck is what the pay is per week or per hour. Whatever and that's what most of us tend to focus on because we're thinking about our bills but let's work even medium-term what other things matter so a hidden way that you get compensation is with the health benefits. You're offered by place if you're working one place this paying you less per hour but they offer you. Employer paid health coverage or overwhelmingly employer paid health coverage. That's worth a lot of money to you. If the next place you go doesn't offer health coverage or offers minimal subsidy. There's a lot of additional money you're having to lay out every month. What do they do about a retirement benefit do they offer a big match on a 401k. Do they offer good 401k plan. What's your promotion potential with that company. I mean i really want you to think about wider than just the paycheck.

They can't do. Yes, well, apparently Trae Young is fed up. He's really fed up. How fed up Not only has he taken to social media saying, y'all ever going to get it right over his 89 ranking on two K 22, but Apparently close to people who know he talked to his agency and asked, Is there a way to sue to get him removed from the game? Because he thinks his representation is unfair. No, there's not. It's collectively bargained with the National Basketball Association. Your name, image and likeness actually was sold off by the union. That's why you pay your dues and you get your money from this. You actually paid for this trip so now thinks he is a 94 or higher, okay? For those who want to know that the highest ranking in the NBA NBA two K is LeBron James. Kevin Durant. Amazon Sellers Beg and Bribe Customers to Delete Negative Reviews, Report Says

"There was an absolutely shocking investigative report by the wall street journal recently about what's been going on. When amazon customers leave a negative review for a product. I mean absolutely stunning. That amazon sellers member most merchandise being sold on amazon being sold by third party sellers. Most of whom are really hard. Working decent business people just trying to earn a living honestly selling goods to people but the seller rating has become so all important as people look at a product and see how many stars it has without digging deeper. That sellers are doing everything they can to manipulate the ratings to the point that they break amazon rules and start harassing you at your email address. I being really nice offering money. Maybe even when you turn them down raising the money they'll offer you to pull down a negative review or to write a positive review. Most often they start offering serious money. According to the wall street journal investigation. When you've written a negative review and then if you still won't pull down the negative review they may start being more and more aggressive in emails. They send to you. Amazon's rules supposedly prevent sellers from doing this and unfortunately in the wall street journal investigation over and over again amazon was found to ignore complaints by its customers when they would complain to amazon about being harassed by sellers. This is an area amazon. Definitely needs to work on what their relationship is. An responsibility is for hosting all these third party sellers.

Beware Buy Now, Pay Later

"I wanna talk about something that has spread like crazy around the united states. I i brought it up in twenty twenty leading up to the christmas selling season and it was not as widespread. Then is it's become now know what it is. It's when you get to register in a store or you're shopping online and at the last second you're offered an option of not having to pay for what you're buying i mean. Is this a great country or what that item. You've got there that new piece of electronics or that new purse or that shirt or blouse or that dress or whatever you don't have to pay for it even just walk out with it right now and you're like what's the catch well will allow you to pay for it. Typically over four easy payments and no interest. It's called buy now pay later. It was popularized in australia. And now big. Time in the united states and i see it and experience it everywhere i go now with buy now pay later many different competitors doing it square bought the biggest one recently called after pay. They paid roughly thirty billion dollars to buy it. How could there be so much money and letting people walk out our stores or shop online without having to pay any money when you got the goods because there's no interest charged if you do everything exactly right. There's no penalty fees if you do everything right but humans being as we are. We don't always do everything. Is we intend.

"Clark world. What's exciting is my new college savings plan guide so it takes a lot of work and i got great help from Christopher of our staff working on this and he denied noodle revisions to the plan and so first of all what is a five twenty nine point. If you're not familiar let's say you got a young kid or young grandkid. And he or. She seems really sharp. I mean those all important. Six month old milestones. They're really showing whatever age in your family has a culture. The kids go to college because that's important. If in your family college is an iffy thing or unlikely this doesn't apply to you but a five twenty nine plan is a special deal where you can put money aside for kids college or also if they go to private school kindergarten through twelfth. You can use in most states part of the money for tax free payment. Tuition wasn't mean tax free and a five twenty nine plan. You put money in in many states. They'll give you a tax benefit just for putting money into a five twenty nine plan and then the money grows tax free over the years if us for college and you start. When a kid's young you might get fifteen to twenty years of tax free growth of that money and you spend it tax free on eligible

Are Smart Phone Apps Ripping You Off?

"Both apple and google are being sued all over the place for how they run their stores. The app store the play store and what these two have been doing. Is they use their shared monopoly control over the ecosystem of phones to put up tollgates to rip you off a lot of cases. You're not even aware how much you're being ripped off their when you download an app that comes with this subscription or purchases. It's marked up an additional thirty percent for the toll that they have to pay the app. Developer has to pay to google or apple and this is so different than the era of the pc. The mac book the windows. Computer the chromebook that when you go to a website you use any function on your computer apple and google and the people who manufacturer chromebooks and all that they don't extract a toll and so the cost of anything you pay goes to who built that service now. This is a huge deal with apple self-dealing trying to rip people off on pandora and especially spotify to try to get iphone users to use apple music. It is true self-dealing where apple is able to grab all this money and google just as guilty in this area and microsoft who quietly has become one of the most valuable companies in the world again. I mean nobody really thinks about microsof- but microsoft has come up with a way to get around this on phones. That probably has google and apple. People furious where they've got a platform they've developed. Where on a phone. You'll be able to access things web-based that operate like apps and avoid the rip off thirty percent. Add on that you have to pay right now in the app store or in the play store and so no that with apps you're using that you're paying usually much more than you have to

Does the 4-Day-Week Really Work?

"I have been such a fan of the day workweek for ever. The quality of life improvement working for longer days instead of five regular days. Were you have three days away from the office versus two days away from the office and i say office i mean from work. I think is incredible and you may have heard. They've been a lot of news. Reports about how iceland. His experimented with four day workweeks. And they believe it's been a massive success that they've actually had higher productivity it companies in iceland by doing the four day week instead of the five day week and i hope that as employers have seen that flexibility still gets the job done and retaining workers is becoming harder and harder thing. They giving people more flexibility in their lives and four ten hour days. Let's stay instead of five eight hour days. It's the same number of hours at work but when you think about that thing. That was all corporate speak Five years ago or whatever work life balance and companies would say. But they didn't mean it but when you have somebody who's got three days threefold as they can do whatever i think about the people who work in jobs where they work Three longer days on and then they have three days off places that are seven day places. How much they love the three and three in this case. We're talking about four on three off. I mean it's something that. I hope that the bosses at various places will see the wisdom of in even for themselves. Having more time with family with friends. It will be a fuller life a better career doing that. HACKS: How to Protect Your Investment Accounts

"Do you know that the congress has never passed protections for consumers on hacks of your investment accounts so if your credit union account or bank account gets hacked and your money vanishes the banker. Credit union is legally required under law to restore your funds. Unless they have some reason to think it's an inside job but that law does not cover any of our investment or retirement accounts. And so it's where all the money really is now and you don't have legal protection. Some of the investment houses some of the brokerages have put out explicit policies. Where in writing they tell you that they protect you from fraud in your account or hacks but others have stayed silent or say a we we evaluate on a case by case basis whenever somebody says we evaluate our case by case basis. Let me tell you it's gonna be a really bad day for you if somebody gets into your money so let me tell you regardless of what a financial institutions policies are the key to you getting your money back if you get hacked is what steps were you taking before the hack took place so there are basically three rules. Will McGregor's Recent Time Off From Fighting Hurt Him Against Poirier?

"Arena. Poor Yea versus McGregor three. Tony, You had a question before I went to the break. All right, Jim, you gave us an extremely in depth analysis of the previous fights. Uh, my question is whatever an athlete in any sport, but, you know, particularly fighters. Um, when they when they have an extended period of time off it either really serves them well, or it really ends up being, you know the detriment of them losing losing the match. So in Connor McGregor's case, the time off that he's had do you think this time off has served him really well? Is he Is he going to come back 110% and absolutely fit. Or do you think the time off maybe was is not going to be good to him The time off before the Korea fight was the That was where he really fell off a little bit, and he was Like I said, great in that first round boxing lives, but he was speaking about boxing pack. Yeah, and, you know, fell in love more with boxing, And it's not boxing martial arts. I mean, you put Jake Paul in the octagon. He gets his head kicked off pillows on his hands to do you put the seller on your hands. You know, it's not necessarily about the violence and the knockout that can be, But when you're dealing with kicks and knees and takedowns and guys who can snap your arms and legs off, But you did, too. And my tie it. It's just a whole different ballgame. So for Connor McGregor to get back in and focus completely on Emma guys, the one thing that, he said this week that stood out to me the most is This is my full attention. I'm not thinking at all about boxing. He finally got back to what got him here and by that I mean training, mixed martial arts and focusing exclusively on beating dust in Korea. And winning back the UFC Championship Belt, which Dana White said today Connor wins this fight The next fight. He's an all time. Great. He's already a legend. He's already one of the most famous over live but to be an all time great. Win these to fight this time off from the last Tory. A fight till now. Guys

"The burden of student loan debt has really been a life. Changing event for many people and i take calls from people who are questions for people who have of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. I people who have no possibility of ever getting loans paid off and it has been <hes>. Really really depressing for a lot of people to be in that situation. And that's why there's a lot of attention being focused on. What's going to happen when the democrats control both branches of the congress and the white house over what they're to do about student loans and forgiveness and it will be a number of proposals floated but one area of unfinished business is something that was passed by on a widely. Bipartisan basis. Quite a while ago. Back in two thousand seven i think was the year and was when i first talked about. It was public service. Loan forgiveness and there are a lot of people who work in public service. Kinda jobs think of teachers police officers. Firefighters people work for nonprofit organizations who have chosen to work in jobs where they don't make as much money but they in turn or of service to others and so that's why congress in order to encourage people to work in fields that serve their fellow. Americans came up with parv public service. Loan forgiveness program that has had administrative failures and then political ones where <hes> the federal government the. Us primary education failed to act in good faith. Ron loan forgiveness and has worked over the years to deny percent of people who have paid into the student loan program as required for ten years to receive loan forgiveness and return for ten years of public service work. And that's a program that absolutely because of the scandals involved with the us department of education and it's contractors sabotaging people's abilities to get loan forgiveness everybody's aware of that now and i think it's very obvious that the loan forgiveness program will begin to work now. There are very specific rules. That department of education contractors lied to people about. You have got to know the rules yourself. There are very specific requirements for you to qualify and ten years of on time payments based on your income. Income income-based is only one of the requirements <hes>. Second one that has confused the daylights out of people in public service work. Is that your loans have to be eligible. And they're very specific criteria for it and also how you make those loans eligible and clark dot com. We have information for you and now there is a new public service. Loan forgiveness that walks you through how to figure out if you are set up properly for your months to count towards public service loan forgiveness but the one thing i want from. Congress is that when they do whatever they're going to do about student loans is people who work as teachers or in public health or a teacher as firefighters police officers <hes>. Whatever the eligible categories are that people who've made in good faith. Their payments on time month after month for ten consecutive years should be waved through the forgiveness program because it was the federal government itself in its contractors that either misled or lied to borrowers. That made them have their forgiveness. <hes> invalidated those people must have their forgiveness honored. We must meet our promises to people who do public service work. It's time for your questions that you've posted for me and joel what you got are clark. Let's keep talking about student loans here. Michelle in michigan says. Both of my kids have student loans since the new president has alluded to the idea of paying off a part or all the student loans in full. How long should we wait to pay on them. Is it also true that the student loan freeze has been extended until march student. Loan freeze has been extended. And i don't even want to say what date it will end up being extended to it will likely be extended till we've got enough shots and people's arms and the economic conditions brought on by the pandemic lift <hes>. And the congress has to come to a mind. The democrats cannot push through significant changes in the student loan program or forgiveness without coming up with something that republicans also go along with the democrats margin of seats in the house is tiny in the senate it is non existent with only being broken by the vice president <hes>. When kamala harris is the vice president and so this is one that's going to require a meeting of the minds between republicans and democrats for how student loans will work going forward and what forgiveness and whatever amount it will be and what you'll have to do to qualify for that forgiveness will end up being mic in new york. Says you always say to wait until junior or senior year college to tap into a five twenty nine please explain that decision more thoroughly css etc. Always ask what you have in savings. So why have more to report if you could use it up in the first years. So that's a great question and there's not an automatic answer to it but <hes>. Huge percent of money in five twenty nine accounts is in the hands of grandparents. That have that money for the benefit of grandchildren and there are specific <hes>. Crazy rules involving money that a grandparent hasn't five twenty nine account that make it more favorable for that money to be used junior and senior year. But as far as what i've said it over the years for <hes>. Parents with five twenty nine accounts they control is. It's a pretty simple thing. It gives you additional time for tax free growth of the five twenty nine plan. Maybe not enough growth for me to have that obsession. The money can be used <hes>. As you wish. And i have a situation where i have three children one of them. I never used any of her five twenty nine money at all and rolled it in to change the beneficiary to her younger sister who now is a second semester junior. I still haven't used any of the money in her account or the money that she basically inherited the use of from her sister. And i don't know what's wrong with me. it's like. I'm a hoarder. But i won't use any of this money but it means that <hes>. If my middle child goes to grad school she's going to be set for that and my third child our son who is still in high school when he goes to college. I'll have all the money. I'll need because i can take money from what was intended for each sister and use it for him so i think it's just a screw loose in my head. The only benefit is the stock market is had an enormous run up in recent years. And i saw a statement for <hes>. For one of the five twenty nine accounts that showed how much money it had earned over the years free and that felt pretty good. I bet it'd be able to send grant to mars for college so i really is <hes>. I think it's a problem. There are people like me. Who have this <hes>. Thing where we hoard savings. And i guess that i'm so wired that way that i would always put off trying to spend five twenty nine money but that's just not the right answer for everyone. What you said is accurate

"Right. Clark yolanda in north carolina says. I'm a forty one year old single parent. I'm looking at life insurance. But i'm not sure how to determine what i need. I've a two year old son have policy through my employer currently in a small policy that should cover funeral. Expenses checked a few companies. But i'm just not sure where to start on this. Okay wonderful the you're looking out for your kids and what i recommend as just a back of the envelope. Simple way to come up with an amount is that you buy a policy that covers ten times. Your annual income that will provide a decent pool of funds to provide for your children in the event of your untimely devise. so that may sound cost prohibitive. But it's not if you buy the right kind of life. Insurance which is known as a level term insurance level term is where you buy for a set amount a set amount of life insurance or face amount of you know how many hundreds of thousands of dollars or whatever it would be for a period of time. You're worried about protecting your children. Ten fifteen twenty thirty years. Whatever that period is on clark dot com. You'll see my guide to buying level term insurance and there are many quotation sites. You can go to to get quotes for many different insurance companies. Whether things. I want to focus your attention on. Is that particularly if you go out. More than fifteen years on level term. I want you to buy a policy from a company rated a double plus by a m best on any of the shopping services that i would direct you to they will show you the a. m. best rating. Which tells you how healthy the insurer is itself. So the eight double plus means they have the highest level of ability to pay claims in the future. Because you wouldn't wanna pay for life insurance policy that later isn't going to pay out for you. Level term insurance has no goofy <hes>. Savings accounts are investment accounts. It only pays a death benefit to your survivors period. That's all it does in the case of buying policy where you're a single parent and you have minor children. That policy usually will be done in a trust kind of arrangement. Don't be intimidated by that. The online sellers are very familiar with this. And you will be able to have someone you trust. Named is the trustee of that in the event that you pass away while your children are still minors

"So one note. . Clark. . His talk for years. . About. . Why it makes sense for people approaching. . Retirement age to way as long as they possibly can taking social security. . and. . In large numbers, , people take social security at age sixty two. . Thinking Hey. . I got to get the money while I can don't know how long I'm GonNa live Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah. . And what happens is that you have been set yourself up. . To, have , a smaller social security payment for the rest of your life, , which is fine. . If you don't live as long as he might like but gets ugly if you live longer than you would expect. . Because what you get up front is a much smaller monthly payment. . When you take it at sixty, , two or sixty, three, , , whatever. . And then the rest of the way all your adjustments happen off that much lower base and that's what I've talked about through the years and been people been very unhappy with me obviously because almost nobody waits till the last possible date. . which is age seventy but. . Right now. . With what's going on with interest rates and the economy? ? Waiting to take social security. . Is the most brilliant idea. . It's ever been unless you know you're. . Not. . In. . Good health. . Your life span expectation is very short. . You WanNa wait as long as you can. . Between a sixty, , two and seventy as you possibly can. . Here's why. . With interest rates as low as they are right now. . You would be better off. . Delaying Social Security. . In spending whatever money you have in savings. . Then it would be to preserve those savings. . By taking social security early. . The reason is, , is that the increase you get? ? Every. . Year you delay taking. . Social Security. . Is, so. , . Valuable. . And is much more than the effective amount that your money can earn that you have right now in savings or CD's. . Bit Is better for you to deplete. . Some of those savings if you need to. . Rather than an to go ahead and take. . Social Security. . Now. . That is an additional. . Factor. . That makes the argument even stronger for delaying when you take social security because of the Federal Reserve artificially holding down interest rates. . Now. . I know that for the most part. . Well nobody's really gonNA listen to me about this, , but I can certainly try. . Because the return you get. . By waiting. . Effectively the imputed return on your money. . Is much higher than you're likely earning on your money right now particularly, , if it's in savings or CD's with stocks, , well, , who knows In terms of what the return would be like over the years between a sixty to seventy by delaying social security though. . It's a sure thing. . And by the way, , if you've already started taking payments sixty two and you say, , why didn't tell me this before now? ? If you're early and doing so and you can afford to you can take money you do have earning basically nothing savings. . Pay Back Social Security, , what you've received. . And then. . Pick it back up later at a much larger benefit. . That's a possible. . Strategy, you , could use to turn back the clock on having accepted social security at an early age. .

"So Do you know that? ? There are so many recalls on vehicles. . That, , we never deal with things that could be. . Actual serious safety defects that could cost you or a loved one, , his or her life. . And we don't know about it or don't get around to it. . So I saw an item in the Detroit free press. . That of the vehicles on the road. . Get this. . This is a shocking number. . Fifty, , three, , million vehicles. . Were recalled last year. . I that's unbelievable. . Fifty, , three million. . And Some of these things are piddly. . Others are life and death kind of things and we just don't seem to. . With all the noise of our lives we don't seem to know a lot of times that there is a situation involving one of our vehicles. . And it goes blissfully. . unrepaired. . Till ignorance is no longer bliss and it ends up hurting somebody or worse. . So I got two messages for you one. . I want you to know. . About defects in a vehicle you have and it's really easy. . For you to know because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which , is the Federal Agency that oversees vehicle safety. . Has a new smartphone APP. . They're totally free you can download it to your iphone or android. . The APP is called safer car. . SAF Our car. . So we need download the SAFERCAR APP. . The initial setup takes you a couple of minutes because you then have to enter. . The vehicle identification number, , the van for your vehicle. . And once you do it. . They will give you notifications. . Of Whatever problems they're aware of with your vehicle. . And it makes you aware. . And then awareness is really important because then you can go ahead and contact the the dealer for your brand. . Make an appointment. . And arrange to get that recall taking care of again. . Some recalls are not safety related. . But many others or safety related maybe very serious like involving steering braking things like that. . And You know. . I have a relative who has many van who got one recently. . That the middle seats have a bracket problem in an accident. . The seats of the van can go flying. . Obviously, , that something important and you WanNa get it taken care of what if you didn't know. . So again they APP. . Safer cars for both iphones and androids download it safercar put in your Vin you're good to go. .

"Star glad you're with us here on the Clark Howard show is we continue our coverage of the effects of corona virus on your wallet and your wife and I had an experience yesterday that was brand new for me and it's part of the era that we're in right now I had a routine follow up visit with my primary care doctor appointment yesterday and guess how we did it the doctor is working from home and he has some have you know suppression issues I guess is the right way to say it and so he cannot see fate patients face to face right now which is working out perfectly in a situation where there was no need for me to go into his office that's on the grounds of a major medical center and you don't want to be at one of those right now where you're around a lot of people who have whatever illnesses and especially right now with the possibility of contracting coronavirus you don't want to be at a major medical center and so he and I did telemedicine visit and we had a choice we could have either done a full video appointment or in the case of my appointment it was routine enough that there was nothing it was some tests I had and they showed nothing particularly alarming so we did phone call basically in an appointment by appointment phone call and we're able to talk through the situation and just so you you don't think they're something dire going on with me I'll tell you my cholesterol levels are not exactly where they should be and like so many people I take Staten generic version of Lipitor and it's not generating the results for me generate results but not the results he was looking for so he explained to me that there's like a booster pill that I'm going to take opposite time of the day for when I take my cholesterol meds so there there you have it you know so that's like a perfect Tennessee choice in the past someone would have gone into a doctor's office we've had a visit my daughter has not one of my daughters my middle child has a sinus infection and she did a video appointment and it's not the same as being in person but absolutely probably adequate in the decision was made to continue to watch it rather than go on any meds right now for the sinus infection again an office visit that was found not to be essential and I think through this process people will become more comfortable both medical professionals and patients in situations that are more routine going for a visit on their phone been going for a visit in person Ron is with us on the car carriage show hello Ron Clark thank you taking my call absolutely Ryan how can I serve you today well I'm in a situation where my daughter is now a senior in high school and shopping for college and she's done some research but the fact remains that I've done most of the research for her and that may have been a mistake but I feel that this is a major decision and a very big decision for a seventeen or eighteen year old and I honestly don't feel my daughter and many other people age seventeen or eighteen already and and qualified to make such a decision well and so I'm doing my my part to help her make that decision and I'm trying to get her involved in the process is a little bit challenging she knows what she wants to major in she has a very vague sense of what kind of a college to look for but I'm trying to help you get a better sense of what college is right for her and it's a running you're bringing this up because let me tell you something I just had this conversation with a friend they were talking about his son who's a high school senior and his son had his heart set on a school that weighs two hundred and twenty thousand dollars for four years fifty five grand a year that's without housing and the sun felt this was the best school for what he wanted to study which was TV and felt and his dad impressed upon him that that would be a terrible decision because the sun was going to have to borrow the money because dad doesn't have two hundred and twenty thousand dollars lying around and the state school that his son could go to and do film and TV over four years was thirty thousand dollars total so I don't know how much money fits in the US that you're trying to help her or how much it is you just trying to guide her to what you think is a better choice for her all my thoughts are that thirty thousand a year is twenty four agreed education and so that's roughly my limit and considering I'm paying the entire bill so I kind of picked out several colleges in helping her to narrow them down and it's kind of down to where we're really focusing on to at this point and she's looking at the one I'm looking at the other and while I'm looking at I think it's a better fit for her but she's kind of looking at the other one that she feels is going to be better recognized nationally and it couldn't come at a more appealing hip kind of an urban setting that she enticed kill so what's the tuition difference between the two they are almost identical just couple hundred dollars difference I know this is gonna sound crazy I think that if the tuitions are similar it's all a gas anyway and a kid can the as many do can transfer if the first school turns out to be the wrong one if the schools are a quick plan cost let her make that decision go visit both of them and try not to be overbearing just let her decide and if she picked wrong then I she can be transferred to that other school or somewhere else okay so you don't feel it the fact I'm paying the bills make much difference there we just elected student make the final call yeah if you're paying and they're a quick flight costs I think let her decide because she's the one who's going to be in the weeds in school every single day right now having to make friends find their way to the coursework and all the rest so I think you've sat down the parameters about what you can afford to pay and what what our boundaries are and so having your choose among two schools between two schools and what her make that call I would do it I'd like her to do that Susan's with us on the Clark Howard show hi Susan Clark great to have you here and you have a question that is a dilemma that people posed to me from time to time and I'm gonna let you tell your story but basically the idea is when do you use your savings to extinguish debt when do you keep both debt and savings right hello my Britain I bought a house together last year and because of job instability on his part we took out a thirty year mortgage with an intention of paying it off as quickly as possible intimate time in over twelve years hopefully down to ten hello okay but because of his job instability we wanted to make sure we have that cushion there in case we needed to lower those extraction now because I sold my house I have extra cash available we are thinking of cutting down on as a lump sum on the mortgage to try to get rid of that sooner we have no other deaths we fully fund for one K. Roth IRA and a traditional Irish as well so we were just wondering if that was a good idea well okay so last of the other in case of an emergency right right so you make me nervous only on one basis and that is that this is unbalanced in the relationship because these are the proceeds from a house that you had I'll be taking that cash and putting it into a house that you two have together and it's a boyfriend girlfriend thing and not a husband and wife so I am what makes me nervous is you put it into a joint asset that's money that right now is completely yours correct so that is so if you ask me I'm in town getting nervous here say listen to you because I would I would tell you that that makes me nervous for you if you look at the two of you is just a unit in the state unit that's your whole deal and you were going to sacrifice what you had from the sale of the proceeds of your prior home so that your life together is better financially I what happened what happens if the relationship doesn't work out like you expected hope and you put all this money on to something then he's gonna expect half the equity at that point well except that there would be a record that I had put in the money ever did happen that legally we would have that if you handled I don't think that does handle it I think I think it would have to be some kind of note that you would do with each other because as I can I hate this I hate being negative like this but I just you asked me the question that I need to protect you so if you had said Hey we had this house together before we sold it we have the cash from it and now we're trying to figure out if we should put it towards them the mortgage we have I would be jumping right into well you got this you got that and the other but in this case you made me worry a lot about you because it's your money you'd be putting in here so I would want you to have a written agreement with each other that that money is your money okay and that way when you go to sell it that that would be your money now let's talk about whether you should go on this trend line to pay off this debt so quickly what other stories are there in terms of data both of your lives nothing we have all our we have three vehicles between us they're all paid off wonderful I own a small business with no data on that great and the card every month okay I love all that so they're they're rainy day you gotten case the unstable job becomes unstable again for him so what interest rate is this thirty year mortgage caring one point one two five four point one two five so that's kind of on the cusp of whether you'd want to pay any extra towards that so we have been telling me to put in an extra thousand dollars a month already sure keep doing that he does keep the sample cash put more money aside for retirement you own your own business are you fully.

"The Clark Howard show. Hi, tara. Click. However, you great, thank you Tara. So you got a young kid who you want to teach banking too. I do my daughter Sadie is eleven and she has a little bit of money saved up. She started her own neighborhood dog walking business, and she's just kind of tired of carrying it around. Like if we go to target she's got two or three hundred dollars in her pocket, and we were trying to figure out what to do with that for her. What would be the best option from her? So usually most institutions in there may be exceptions. But as a general rule the floor on opening a checking account is age thirteen. But I do have an alternative Atkin suggest. And it's something that is a cooperative effort of WalMart and American Express, and it's called Bluebird. And blue bird like a checking account and to savings account and spending account all in one. And you can make deposits to your blue bird account at a WalMart or she can give you the money and with your phone, you can deposit money into her account n even number of ways where she would hand you cash she'd write a check and do an electronic deposit into Bluebird. And the best thing about Bluebird is that in most circumstances, it has no fees attached to it. You have to do a couple of things outside the box end up with any fees. Sounds perfect. So with Bluebird I'm looking now, see if you can do all that Bluebird. Yeah. Okay. So right on their homepage. We were dot com. It says benefits of banking without all the fees. So it's pretty simple in easy as a way for your eleven year old to be able to have a portable way of paying for things and not having to carry cash, which always puts her in a certain amount of risk and threat. Okay. This looks great. I'm on their website. Also, it looks it looks something like we'll look into tonight and get her set up. We'll that's need. And you know, it's funny about Bluebird is I've never mentioned it that I can recall specifically for a child because I always think of it for adults who are tired of banks, ripping them off with fee after fee after after fee, and but it's actually I think a perfect answer for your eleven year old, and I hope she stays industrious with her dog walking business. He was with us on the Clark Howard show. Hello, hugh. Hey clark. How are you? Great. Thank you, Hugh. So you're going on a cruise in Hawaii. That's right there. I was fortunate enough and quite surprised my my my in laws are taking us on a cruise up to the island. So so this is the most erotic thing that you're calling about this, Hugh because my oldest brother is on a cruise in Hawaii and literally today and today stop is on a wa who and I think they're they're going to wander around. He's been to wa who in the past, but they wander around and go to diamond head and stuff like that today. Yeah. Well, no, you heard talk about cruises and Hawaii a lot. No, you seem to like both of them. So, but yes, we're going in may and my in laws brought list of all the excursions that our sponsor through the cruise line, and, you know, looking at them, and you know, they looked interesting, but also pretty pricey the I don't find I don't buy short excursions from a cruise line ever ever not ever ever ever. Yeah. I mean, I I was I was trying to think of never having been a cruise anywhere else. So I had to imagine. Once we got off if we did just a little bit of research with probably have a good luck. Good luck. Just finding you know other opportunities over own that is that what you typically recommend. Well, I don't recommend you wait till you're there. There are a number of outfits that sell shore excursions third party. Okay. Okay. Separate from the cruise line usually you'll save. Depending on where which ports and things you'll save about a third of the cost to half the cost of buying a shore excursion from the cruise line. The only thing I recommend is that you make sure you're not cutting it to close on getting back to the ship because if the shore excursion that you buy third party, they get back to late the ship's sails out you they don't wait for you on the other hand when it's when sold by the cruise line, they wait for those customers to get back now. One to direct you first to the website. Cruise critic dot com. Okay. And when I just put in shore excursions while we were talking I don't know if you've heard me typing away, right then. And when I typed in the search box shore excursions the second article that comes up is Hawaii's best shore excursions. Yeah. Imagine it's probably a watched. Wants to do fine. When you look at it. And so you'll see who the third parties are whatever port you're going to. If you search online there in the Caribbean. There are certain companies that do a lot of the bookings of third party shore excursions like in the Caribbean. I think it's resorts for day a resort for day something like that is a big seller of third party excursions, you bypass the cruise lines with and they're these various operators in specialize in different parts of the world in it's actually resort for a day for people going on Caribbean cruises, but he probably just a couple of weeks out from the trip. Go ahead, and you have all your Scourging the lineup or no I would say you can read about the excursion. See what's involved with them? And there are going to be maybe some spots, you decide, you know, we're not even going to do an excursion. We're just gonna pile everybody in you know, in new Berlin or cabs or whatever. And just goes. Go to these places that we've read about we don't need to wait for an operator. And then another case, it's you're going to want the operator based on what you're doing. Okay. So that's why the best thing to do is in advance research excursions figure out what people might really enjoy to do doing. And then figure out who you're going to book with and then make that call how far in advance. He wanna book I have. I'm unusually careless with this because our son is obsessed with cruises as about to go on his fourteen and I'm not really into cruises. But for him. It's like the most exciting thing he can do in. So we go and a lot of times. I know this is terrible. I don't even look at the excursions till I'm on the ship and on my phone, I'll buy an excursion while we're still import getting ready to leave the original port to go somewhere. So I'm way too cavalier about it and waiting till the last minute unless somebody's a really experienced cruiser, not a good idea. And that's why I do the research in advance life insurance is one of those topics. That everyone knows a little bit about. But do you understand it well enough to feel comfortable buying it? "Page information on the new twenty nineteen study if you wanna dig deep you can also linked to the twenty eighteen study of how hybrid employment works, and I never want. You to study something just because it's good in the job market. I want you to do stuff that you'll enjoy. But there's no reason you can't do both sides of that. I think about one of the early adaptations of this before this term existed started probably oh mid last decade. When it became common that people that were artists also studied computer skills as the designing of art migrated, mid last decade from people sitting with a scra-, you know, a sketch pad or whatever immigrated to people creating often on a MAC computer with a giant screen, and that required two sets of skills, one computing and the other the art skill that marriage of those two skills led to people having amazing career success in a field that historically had been something people were pursuing what they loved art. But it didn't bring a lot of job opportunities available that paid. Well, now, the combination of those two does just that. Moses is with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, moses. Glory. Thank you for taking my question. Absolutely. Moses. How can I serve you? Yes. I have something in my credit reported not letting me get in the -partment every time I try to get an apartment that they come up with that. And I called the company and they say they were settle with me for half the price. But my question is how do I make sure that is the Jit in? How do I how do I know they're gonna take it off my credit reporting? Oh, how do I go about taking that off my credit report after I paid them the amount or so let's talk through the possibilities. What kind of debt was it? It was an apartment that. My roommate did not pay but there. Yeah. Pardon me. It wasn't my my name that is the worst scenario when you're trying to rent an apartment when they see an unpaid debt for an apartment your is discovered. You're dead meat trying to rent one. So making a deal with them as fine. But only if you get that deal in writing and the writing can be in an Email. Okay. And so the you would need from them saying that we will accept payment of these number of dollars is full satisfaction of this debt. And when you pay that I recommend that you pay them by money. Order money order. Okay reason I recommend money. Order is that if you pay by credit card you pay by checking account you pay by debit card. There are some dishonest collection agencies that once they have account information. They will continue to debit or continue to charge. Even though you have already paid as agreed. Okay. And so if you pay by money order they've got nothing that they can use to try to get more money out of you improperly. Okay. Okay. But but they don't get anything from you too. You have something in writing either by letter or Email saying that that just as they have said to you. That they put that in writing, and that you honor that by paying that amount of money to them. So okay now, I wanted to go to something you said getting it removed from the credit. All right. So the way this plays out is if and you can make a deal with a collection agency that if you pay something they agree to remove it from your report, but you'd need that from them and writing before you paid them the money you've agreed to. Happen is it will still show on there? But it will show no balance owed, which depending on the apartment management group where you'd go to rent maybe enough for them or it just even being there could still be a problem. I see. Okay. So remember till you give money you actually have all the power. All righty. And be more careful picking your roommates moving forward. Leave me. I I will. That's to you Bill is with us on the car coward show. Hi, bill. Hi clark. How're you doing today? Great. Thank you Bill. You are one brave man. Well, you know, it's funny. I was listening to your thing about hybrid jobs, and let me tell you being assisted chief of a busy firehouse is all about hybrid jobs. So you deal with a human things all the time..

"Land is with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi lyn. Hi, good afternoon. How are you doing very well? Thank you. How can I serve? You. Lynn this Christmas. I purchased five kids for DNA testing for myself. My husband, my son is girlfriend in our grandson thinking, this would be fun. And. It is to me. But to a lot of people, it's not. Well, my son recently, I read on the internet, which obviously don't know if it's true or not one of the pharmaceutical companies happened to purchase this particular company. And my son is now hesitant and said, no he doesn't want to do it because he doesn't trust. What happens with the information? That is a very legitimate concern and one that people have been very worried about what happens with the data that twenty three and me now has on you or ancestry dot com has on you. Yeah. I I take the craziest position which is. I figure everything about us ends up out there. Anyway. And so I have talked openly on the air about what I found out about my medical future possibly based on what twenty three and me is found out. So there is a there is a concern what pharmaceutical companies might do what insurance companies might do. Or who knows who might do with the information on us? And so, you know, what some people have done Lynn in this case is they've done only the the family tree history type tests rather than the one that gives you the full medical. Okay. And you know, Twenty-three a me because of people's concerns has divided their sales product into one that just does family tree and another that does the full medical along with the family tree. So obviously, I just need to make sure that the one that I purchased does not do the medical aspect, but the family tree part of it is okay as best. I I can't think of what would go wrong with that other than when people find out that the people they think they're related to aren't necessarily which has been a terrible issue where people have found out family deep dark secrets and surprises. And so twenty three men ancestry of both had to train their customer service workers and basic counseling because of the surprises that have popped up. Okay. So I appreciate that. So I think it's all fun. But a lot of other people aren't fighting this all fun and games. Okay. Well, I appreciate your help. Thank you very much. Good afternoon to today's car courageous moment is something that is such a lesson in capitalism that if you get to the point where you cut corners that you lose your ethical moral, compass and business you can end up making less money in alienating more people than if you just did business right in the first place. Wait till you hear what Facebook was involved in doing in today's Clark rage. Rogge's Clark Regis moment. So this is a stunner reported in USA today that in court documents Facebook was involved in a conspiracy with game makers that was specifically designed and the game makers were encouraged by Facebook to cheat the families of minor children playing games. So people started playing a game through the Facebook platform. And there would be what are called in game purchases or purchases. Facebook was working with the app developers to specifically run up hundreds. If not thousands of charges on a parents Bank account or credit card. And specifically designed it as a way that the parents would not know until the Bill came Facebook employees involved in the conspiracy referred to children who were playing these games. A lot is Wales. And there's all these documents that clearly spell out that Facebook, actively conspired to steal money from families trusting Facebook as a platform Facebook encourage developers to get kids to spend money without ever getting permission from their parents..

"The Clark Howard show for this special edition our ninth year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. EES is I get a chance to wander around the massive Las Vegas convention center and the other facilities and bring to you a vision of how life is going to change little ways and big ways because of technology being developed by the world's brainiacs. And if you've heard me over the last couple of days you've heard about so many unusual products. So many things that are big changes in some parts of your life. Some that are really subtle, and I wanna hit you with a couple of subtle things right now things that are incremental changes coming in your life and things at once you have them you'll be like, wow, why didn't do this before. And one of them is the scenic sound bar. This is a product that was developed in England and is being sold. Not direct to the public, but is being sold to electron IX manufacturers. So a lot of stuff that's shown at CS is a drek manufacturer to manufacturer item in televisions sound systems things like. Sonos systems, or it'd be the kind of thing you should think. And what it does is? There's a little digital camera built in to televisions sound systems, whatever and wherever you are sitting or standing it will individually direct sound perfectly your ears. Let me give you a scenario. So let's say there are three of you sitting in the den watching a movie on your TV. The sounds will direct sound perfectly that balances the sound system and slices and dice it. So that each of you hear the sound perfectly in each of your ears may not sound like much. Let me tell you. When you experience it. It's like a wow moment that everybody has. This perfect sound because there's so much effort made with home theater sound systems and music sound systems, but you can only balance for somebody being in an exact one place a room this allows the sound to be targeted. Now, another use of it is in public spaces. You know, how there will be an announcement made in an airport or any public place, and let's take a stadium where the sound reverberates, and it's really really hard for you to tune into. What is being said over the public address system? This technology will allow every person in every seat to hear the announcement clearest could be like they were in a place with no noise like noise cancellation and directing the sound to them. And here's another thing that came from England and you'll hear me sometimes talk about things in terms of what countries they're from. Because. Entries rent spaces as master renner's in some cases, and various researchers and product manufacturers collect in that area. So this one was developed by a college student and at some in cold Boone, and it again is a product that is being sold direct to retailers both for physical stores and for online shopping. So let's say that I'm trying to figure out what to buy for my wife. And so I'm always clueless as a guy I do a terrible job buying gifts for her. If I go on the Boone at the would not be called that or it'd be whatever store you're shopping at they ask you about forty five seconds of questions about the person, you're buying a gift for and then you select a price category. And what? It was a stunner was after I answered the questions about my wife it then gave me back suggestions of gifts for her. And they were so accurate. And so things I would have never thought of to buy her that in by price category. That what it does for a retailer is it greatly reduces their returns because returns are deadly for retailers because you're actually buying something for someone that they actually one just another example of the kind of weird areas covered at sea. Yes, here's something that you may be aware of. If you live in California Arizona soon in Michigan you won't have to go to DMV anymore because now the license plates are tags whichever you like to call them are now going to be.

"A rapid recovery. Kelly's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, kelly. Hi clark. Thank you so much for taking my call. And I really love your show love your website from appreciate your encouragement for all of us to live debt free. So thank you. Thank you. And you are a would-be or or an existing landlord. Yes. Unbelievably on. I have a home in Seattle, and I've always used management company and that worked great. But I do have the opportunity to go on my own now. And I wanted to get your advice. It would save me a hundred bucks a month or twelve hundred year, if I do this on my own, and I've already greens some prospect of parents and Bank can do this. And just kind of wanted to get your advice. I do live by hours away in another state. You have anybody who's on the ground local in Seattle who you can trust to deal with things on site. When you need it. You could pay them per time. Something came up because you got to pay them, otherwise they're not going to be reliable here. Sure. Haas ably. I have some. Friends there. But you know, they all were regular day jobs. I don't know if that would really work I can tell you have more guts than I do because I have one of my rental properties is six hours away from me. And I have a management company handling it. Just because share it seems too difficult. The three that I have local to me I handle here. But one that's as far away is yours in Seattle. I really think that it's worth it to pay that management fee. Okay. And if you wanna try it try it, and if it gets to be too much of a burden you can go back to a management company. Okay. Fantastic. That that's what will do men. Do. You think? Can I get away with not having to do the official credit? Check I've called previous landlords, and I've called him the employers to verify their wages and everything looks good. So do I have to do you don't you don't want to? But I think there's a good reason for you to do a credit check background check. Because you just don't know how reliable somebody is paying their bills and former landlord might not tell you the absolute truth on that..
