Beware Facebook Messenger Scams

"There's been an ongoing series of scams. Where people's facebook identities are taken over by a hoodlum who then having read all the stuff in. Somebody's facebook will then start sending messages to people with enough familiarity that they think they're dealing with somebody who really is that person and affinity fraud comes and bites some hard. You know. affinity fraud is is when you're much more likely to be scammed by a friend or family member and you are a stranger so the strangers impersonate friend or family member and come and rip you off. There was a very well researched story. Recently in the los angeles times that was written by the great david laskaris their consumer reporter extraordinaire about how this is become a big thing with facebook. That makes it really way too easy for people to hack into people's facebook accounts and then send these. Fake appeals is if they are that individual and there's an ugly one. It's been running around for a while involving lions club. Lions club is a is a community service organization and people are getting these fake messages. They're real messages but not from their actual friend on facebook telling them about these grants that are available through what they're pretending is lions club. And there's all these warnings out there now to know that those lions club grants don't actually exist. People are mad at lions club. They got ripped off. They had nothing to do with

Fresh update on "clark howard" discussed on Erick Erickson

"This executive order from the Bite administration is insisting that in the next year, any company that contracts with the federal government is gonna have to use two factor authentication to get into their systems. I listen, I encourage everyone I know to do this. I sat down with Different security expert last year. Because one of the Democratic campaigns got hacked. I can't remember now all of the details. What were the Democratic campaigns gotta act and there was an interview with a security consultant who actually talks to this was an in the wake of the 2016 stuff in the hacking of all the e mails from John Podesta, the like This guy who is a partisan Democrat, actually went out and began consulting with Democrats on campaign security, and I participated in and listen to an interview of him and reached out and had conversations on how to Better make myself secure. And one of the chief things I heard from him and Clark Howard has mentioned this is standard text messaging is easily hackable. It is very easy for someone to infiltrate an SMS server or a wireless system like for example, let me put it to you this way. Israel bombed Thomas's headquarters. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, put up the video yesterday. What Israel did is that dropped a dummy bomb on top of the building. And that was a signal that Israel intended to blow up the building. Israel then was able to overwhelm the cell service is in the area around it, and anyone who had a cell phone was able to get an alert from Israel, saying We're going to blow this up in an hour. Get out until everyone else to get out. Israel did that It doesn't get media coverage, but Israel did it. So they were able to easily get into the SMS system that the Palestinians were using. Because SMS is not secure. It is not a secure system. Now you're wondering what is SMS? Um, SMS stands for, Um Mama Mama Mama Short message Service. It is your standard text messaging service. If you have a cell phone, and you sent a text message, the odds are Unless you're on an apple device and into an apple device, you're sending a short message service and SMS text. It is an unsecured protocal. It is less secure than email. And it's easily hackable. So if someone is really interested in infiltrating your devices, they hacked the SMS system. And they just wait for the text message to come to you. And it's gonna get also duplicated on their phone and away. They go to get into your system, so instead you use the offing authenticator programs off. He is the one that I highly recommend. A U. Th why it works on your desktop computer windows or Mac. It works on your android devices. It works on your IOS devices. And then you go through with each of your services. Your Gmail account your instagram account your Twitter account Your Dropbox Scout. You name it. Your X box account. Your your PlayStation account. And you connected to all the and it makes sure people cannot hack your devices. Oh, hush, Siri. I highly recommend it now. I realize that sounds very esoteric. But the odds are that something very similar to that happen to get people into colonial. And it could just be through our regular employees account and they were able to. It could've been a phishing email. We don't know. You know, we occasionally now in our company will get emails that appear to be phishing emails, and if you click on him, it'll it'll come from the company say you just opened a phishing email. You should know better. Here's how to spot the clues. I've opened one before, just because I knew what it was, and I wanted to see how they did it. I'm actually I have a pretty aggressive robot Spam filter program to help me not screw up, But you would be amazed how they psychologically target employees. For example, I am aware of a company. I actually was talking to the corporate counsel a couple of months ago about the situation there company got hacked by one of these eastern European gangs. The gang's knew that one of the employees Based on his pattern that was reviewed gangs knew that one of the employees Based on his pattern that was revealed in the dark Web. More likely than not had a propensity to look at pornography at the office. And so they targeted him with it. And sure enough, he clicked. And they were able to get into the company. They employees lost his job. His result. Or take John Podesta. John Podesta, who worked with Was that what Center for American progress. And he was consulting with Hillary Clinton got an email that said that they believe that his email had been hacked on he needed to click The link immediately on it would route to security protocols to make sure that his account was secure. And when he clicked the link, it freaked him out. He click the link, and that's when he got hacked. That's a phishing e mail. By the way, P h i s h i n g phishing email of their fishing for data. Hey, click the link thinking Oh, my gosh. Mike Houseman hacked. Let me do what they say. Click the link. It looked like it came from the Democratic National Committee. He clicked. The link in his account got hacked. They're very smart and using psychology to get into these systems, and if you use two factor authentication, it becomes really, really, really hard to get into the system. You gotta be careful. So now I mean, the big issue is I've mentioned it three or four times now. The dark Web where they get the stuff. What the heck is the dark Web? Well, let me explain that one to you when we come back. Do.

A New Option for Building and Repairing Credit

"Over the years. I've done a lot of counseling with individuals and couples that are in a world of hurt with debt and there are different situations that lead people into debt. Half of the time. It's not lifestyle it's medical debt but the other half often. it's how we handle money. That gets us into trouble. And i've had a standard method that i've used when i'm dealing with people who have lifestyle debt. I've used it for more than thirty years. And it sounds so antiquated now. But it's all about paying for everything that's walking around with cash. I've found again and again and again people in over their heads financially end up getting control back if they get rid of plastic and it doesn't mean closing accounts although some people need to do that. It's where you put your cards literally in the deep freeze and if you think i'm kidding i'm not so sure you take a freezer bag but your credit and debit card in credit and debit cards because so to say singular. It's not true for most people you put them in a plastic bag but water in the bag. Seal it and throw it in your freezer. And i just been stunned over the years. I mean there are people who who bail out. Don't stick with it but people who do are shocked how quickly they dig out of debt by living on an allowance

Bucks Fastbreak: Milwaukee wraps up 6-game road trip

"Was a big deal. The timing of the turnovers, I think also adds to, uh, you know, the collective loss here and frustration. You know, you look at your holidays deadline. It wasn't as clean as others. That lines for him during this road trip for this season was not a great night for your holiday candidly. Three turnovers is not. I wouldn't say it's backbreaking, but Did they all came in the fourth quarter. Two. Maybe in three or four possessions at a time where the bucks were still clinging there, Justin looking like okay, Here we go. It Z leader starting to grow. We'll just knock it down a shot here and you'll be fine. But they were. I want to say it was two and three or four possessions right away in that fourth quarter that helped contribute to the mass running away. So juiced that line not pretty tonight. Three turnovers, but to it a really critical moment I thought in the game in the fourth was having kind of a tipping point for me one of many things but really stands out when those happen in the fourth quarter.

Great news if you're saving for your grandchild's college

"For years. I have cautioned grandparents that do most of the savings for college for grandkids. Much more than parents are able to save for kids because parents let me tell you there in the weeds. They've got all those expenses paying for their kids saving for their own retirement paying their mortgage or had and all the various demands on their money and if their ambition is to have a kid to college. It's a precious. Few parents are able to save for a kid's college without hurting their own retirement. And is you've heard me say your highest priority is saving for your own retirement because kids can pay college a number of different ways number one. Is they go to a cheaper college number. Two they work number three. They got scholarships

Employers and the pandemic effect

"We gotta talk you know. Employers have used the pandemic as an excuse as a way of getting rid of people that are older workers and they been able to avoid any discrimination age discrimination oversight really by using the pandemic as a way of paring back workforce's really giving it a older employees them taking it on the chan in the crazy thing is the reality companies that do that end up lowering their future profitability. And they think they're so smart. Treating older workers like dirt and treating them as refuse or surplus and hiring somebody younger cheaper and yeah there are advantages at least immediately with payroll. But what a you moves you move the institutional memory. I've seen that in so many industries so many businesses where they decide they're going to pare payroll and they really go after the older workers and end up thinking that they're doing something really clever. They know it's sturdy but they think they're doing something clever but they end up hurting the company's very future well now to surprise the wall street journal wrote a report about why getting rid of the older workers is actually going to harm the american economy because the number of workers fifty five and older that are in the workforce right now is down to thirty eight percent

Hospital price disclosure is the law not happening

"Today's episode i wanna talk about hospital pricing. You know this is an area that is the probably the biggest problem in healthcare costs hospitals have conspired to prevent people to comparison shop. And if you look at where. the cost. medical care has skyrocketed in the last twenty years. It's all on the hospitals doctors not at all nurses not at all pharmaceuticals well. They're somewhat a problem but the whole ballgame has been the hospitals and the hospitals have fought every possible. Way doing what they're supposed to do which is give you the ability to comparison shop. They are required by law to allow you to know the price of a procedure based on your individual health care coverage you have insurance or what. It costs if you don't but do you know. An investigation exclusive investigation by the wall. Street journal found that hospitals are using code. Software developers have come up with to hide their pricing. So they're complying with the letter of the law. The pricing is there on the hospital websites but then they use coding to hide the prices. So when you go to comparison shop you can't this is disgusting. People have been fighting about obamacare since. What two thousand nine. twenty ten. Whatever and before obamacare during obamacare. Whatever comes after obamacare. The problem is not how we ensure people. The problem is all on the cost side. And it's all with these hospitals. They conspire against the best interests of our country.

"Susan is with us on the clark howard show hi susan hi clark thanks for taking my call certainly you want to get into the roth versus traditional for retirement savings i do because you were recently talking about how because changes in taxes now that it's so much better to go into to walk you know no question but i was just wondering for those of us that already have all of our money in a traditional 401k if it's worth perhaps moving some of that into a a raw only if your income is in a down year it's not worth it to take the risk of having to pony up all that tax because to make it work you've got to come up with the tax from savings you have outside of retirement and a road whatever financial cushion you have for rainy day in your current life not you're retired life so when i talk about pivoting if it's available to you into a roth for a one k instead of traditional it's really for money going forward okay so an example tell you examples though when it would make sense to do it currently instead of later let's say somebody's in a career path is a profession where it's a pretty common career trajectory the income will rise substantially over the course of a career and that would be maybe some computer fields medicine potentially in the law where where it's likely based on your skill set and training that you could have a huge increase and income over the years then making the short term sacrifice of converting existing money deposited in regular ira or an old 401k to to roth money would be worth the hit paying the tax up front.
