"In the Christmas shopping season. Well, one of the biggest topics I've been asked about over the last year has been series I savings bonds. And man, they confuse people and people I have some trouble from time to time buying them. I want to tell you how the rates are set has just changed. Not just the rate, but how the rate will be set going forward. And I want to tell you how it works and how it works for you moving forward. I'm also going to talk about something that has freaked me out, what Americans are saving. Has collapsed and not necessarily because of inflation. Some people, yes, but that's not the key. And this is tied right in with it. Big jump in the amount of credit card debt. And then of course, I'm going to get to your questions. So I want to talk to you about the I bonds. I binds became something that I have been at various phases since the 1990s obsessed with. And then I'm like, no big deal. I bonds are inflation binds where you take on the debt of the federal government. You're basically lending money to the federal government to deal with our ridiculously high budget deficits that we run in the United States. And then with an I bond, you are rewarded by not falling behind inflation. Recently, there was a land rush buying them because the interest rate that I bonds were paying was well over 9 and a half percent. People were buying them like mad at our team Clark consumer action center. There were days that the number one question coming in. Day after day was about how to buy series I savings bonds. In short, in the simplest circumstance, although there are ways to go outside the caps, you can buy $10,000 of these each year. They were paying the 9.6 four whatever it was, exactly. They were paying these huge rates because the rate is reset every 6 months. Based on an inflation measurement index that the Federal Reserve uses treasury uses as well. The rate was crazy high the last 6 months. So now that you may not feel it yet, but inflation is not as bad as it's been. The new rate that resets every 6 months now is 6.89%. Still, much better than you can go earn anywhere else on savings. And you have to set up an account at savings bonds dot gov and that will take you to a website called treasury direct.

"When you turned 1718 years old. You were on your own. I have a friend who at 15 was on his own. Today, that's not the norm. In fact, people argue, what is the age? That someone becomes an adult. Now they use this term emerging adult. So today, so many connections to our kids continue that are financial. They stay on our family cell phone plans, our health insurance, I'm guilty of that for my 23 year old, both of those things. And is it right for us to do that as a parent to keep our kids involved financially where we're taking care of some of these things for them? It's a tough question. And later, I've talked about all my trackers, I've got my Garmin fitness tracker, my Samsung smartwatch, my aura ring, and yes, I guess that I have an obsessive issue that I'm doing all this. But do you know that some of the health places out there are spying on us tracking us and sharing our information with others? Do you know if anything you're doing is doing that kind of stuff? We're going to talk about that. So this came up as a topic to talk about in the podcast when we were having a meeting of several of us from the website and from the team Clark consumer action center and Kristen mee and this meeting. We're all talking. And we were talking about, why is it in the United States and Canada, unlike virtually every other country on earth, people switch who they get their cell phone plan from all the time. There's just routine that people would get their cell phone service this month from this company and then there might be a deal they'd be at the supermarket and they'd see a deal for the month of November and so they'd buy this other company's card for that month and they'd have the sim for them and be an electronics and they'd buy that and they just switch. The number of instantly ports from a company a to company B, the company C or whatever. And then our head of team Clark, Laurie said, family plans. That the cell phone carriers

"Rates for releasing a new car gone up in general and are there any hidden traps with extending Elise? I like my current car and would be happy to extend if it's a lower payment. I know buying it out is also an option but not sure I want to go that route. Of course, I've Googled this, but any advice you have would be much appreciated. So Kate, this is how this plays. Step back for a minute from trying to get a lower payment. And let's look at the overall picture of this. You are in the sweetest spot right now. You could possibly be. You have one of the most reliable and dependable and popular SUVs that exist. A Mazda CX 5. You have a vehicle that's way below the mileage that basically you're paying for as part of that lease. At a time that that vehicle is worth much more than was estimated, it would be worth in the residual in that lease. What I'd like you to do is buy the vehicle in September or July by the vehicle in July for what the residual value is. At that point, you'll have multiple options. You might be able to sell that CX 5 that you just bought for 5 to $10,000 more than you just paid in the residual purchase. You may find since you know it, you love it, you've been happy with it. Then you just take out a loan for it. When you buy in July and you just pay it out because then at the end of that, you are going to own it free and clear. Ultra low miles, you know how you drive. There's no surprises by it. And I want to thank you for listening to this episode. Also want to express my gratitude to the people who work as employees and volunteers and the team Clark consumer action center..

"On the original ugliest data breach of all time Equifax breach of 5 years ago. So there's a lot of emails floating around about it. Letters to file a claim I want to tell you what the real scoop is. And later, I've got some amazing news on the cell phone front. How about having a free calling plan? It's not a joke, a free calling plan. I'm going to share a couple of options that the marketplace is now presenting to us. One that's free and one that's a deal. So we are getting tons of questions. To our free one on one consumer advice center called the team Clark consumer action center, people that are just absolutely befuddled and confused by the terms of the finalized class action lawsuit. Can you believe it took 5 years? To get to a finalized thing for the Equifax state of breach. And the truth be told Equifax really got away with an unbelievably horrific set of circumstances where two thirds of American adults have had deep data about them that were leaked because of sloppy work by Equifax and a lot of people lost their jobs there, but at the same time, millions of Americans and also if you have any Canadian relatives, Canadians as well. Suffered a breach of their personal information so deep that criminals have been able to bide their time and you never know where an identity theft is going to happen. One of our staff members is going through an identity theft thing right now where someone was able to use data that we don't know if it's from the Equifax breach, what breach, but they were able to fully impersonate them and try to steal all the money out of their bank account. And only because it was actually a credit union. Some of the credit you thought, before we send all this money away, we should really make sure make sure, and that was the first are employing new that there was full identity theft going on in that sharp person at the credit union prevented what would have been a big theft money. So the Equifax state debris, although it's the worst data breach ever experienced in the United States is certainly not the only one..

"Service or many, many different types of customer service issues there's lots of options. And I know Clark, you talk about social media being so powerful in that situation. And how if you've gone up the food chain and you can't reach anybody, you only state the facts because you can get in trouble if you don't state the facts, but you can go on their Twitter account, their Facebook account. And then just state what's going on and ask them to contact you. There's also the chat and the wonderful thing about chat is you've got written documentation rather than just verbal. So you can print that out and have that as a resource if you need to continue on with your complaint. We also like to tell callers that call in. We like to give them the site Elliot dot org because Elliot dot org when people went callers when they see this site. They can see that they're lighting up because you get executive contacts. You get email, you get their email addresses, of corporate, you get the social media context. It depends on the company, how much information you're going to get, but also you can see when it was last updated as well. So it's kept very, very current. So I just wanted to let everyone know that Elliot dot org is a wonderful resource for customer service. What else you got for me? So we are, like I said, we're getting so many calls about investing. And one of the interesting and really great things is that our callers and your listeners are investing in their four-o-one-ks and a lot of time that's automatic right now. So the employer goes ahead and puts you in a target date fund usually. And so you don't have to think about what mutual funds you're going to invest in. But we're finding people want to invest in Roth IRAs or IRAs and then they're sort of confused. They don't know how to pick the mutual fund and go with it. So we're having to walk them through that. Let me state we are not an investment show the team Clark consumer action center is not an investment advisory organization. But there are certain guardrails you should know in certain things you can do to get going and get started or to start accumulating money and what you're talking about that we answer the basics that you think the way I try to explain it is that 401k is a house. And a Roth IRA is another house and a traditional IRA is another house. And then so all you have is you have that address. But then you have to furnish it..

"15th, 2022. So we have an unusual treat that we have once a year we have our boss lady are executive director of the team Clark consumer action center. And this is where you can get free one on one advice. It's something we've been doing for just a whisker less than 29 years where you can talk with a member of our team one on one about a question you have a problem you have. You're looking for answers and solutions. And that's what you do, Laurie and the team cart consumer action center. And you said I should not have said that you are a lawyer because we don't provide legal advice, but that is your training. That is correct. And so what I wanted to do, you know, I've always believed that the most important thing is to avoid getting into trouble in the first place because that's so much better than trying to work your way out of a bind once you're in it. So you track everything that people are contacting you about every problem they have every question. What is the number one thing you've heard from people in 21? Well, we are getting so many calls with respect to used cars or automobiles in general, whether it's repairing the car and having issues with the repair or a lot of calls and to your point, I don't like it when we get a call where the damage has been done and you're having to figure out what to do in a many times. Don't have a good solution. And so I wanted to talk about use car purchases and what's so important to do before you purchase a vehicle to avoid having to call the consumer action center for advice. You want me to answer that or you answer? Well, all right. So we know the number one thing you need to do is to get it checked out by an independent mechanic before you purchase the vehicle. And if the whoever you're purchasing the car from will not let you take the car off the lot, you run away. You don't walk, you run..

"Of this podcast, we're going to talk with our team Clark director to find out what things are really troubling people right now, what questions they really have in our team Clark consumer action center. But first, without further ado, drum roll, please. I should have never encouraged these. You must think, I'm pretty stupid. You should be ashamed of yourself. Well, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you're right, pal. Okay, we're gonna start with this one from Daniel. You tell Roth IRA's continuously but never note that the math is the same whether you place money in a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA with a Roth you place in post tax dollars and then do not get taxed some withdrawals for a traditional, you pay with pre-tax dollars. If you invest the tax money saved on a traditional IRA, then you end up over the years in the same place as a Roth, the Roth IRA is only a bet that the tax rates will be lower in the future, but no one knows what the future tax rates will be. The other issue no one mentions is that Congress could change the tax law and make Roth IRA withdrawals taxable. That would be double loss as you would be taxed on the way in and the way out with the deficit growing the politicians could see the Roth IRAs is a big pot of money to be taxed. Do you trust politicians to keep their word and that's from Daniel? Daniel, okay, so first of all, you don't know that I am a sly sinister character. Why is it that I would love the Roth IRA so much more than a traditional? Because the limits on contributions are such, what you can contribute in a year that if I get you to do the Roth IRA, you're effectively contributing roughly 30% more towards your retirement than if you do traditional. Since your capped at 6000 bucks a year, if I get you up to the cap and you do a traditional, you end up effectively with 30% less money down the road than you do with the Roth. Because you can put in more money. And with the deficits you referred to, the odds are higher down the road that we will have higher tax rates, meaning that the Roth is potentially a better deal tax wise..

"Dot com slash CAC has been receiving a ton of calls about car repair lately. And there's no surprise because of the fact that people are holding onto their cars longer because of the vehicle shortage. I'm going to give you my best advice on how to prevent car repair nightmares and try my best to help you out if you're already stuck in one. Also, if you're a small business owner, you know you got ripped off on so many things, especially the banks cheap, small business owners, but there are new companies emerging that can save you potentially big money on your business accounts. So speaking of people who feel short change, people who feel ripped off, people who feel cheated, sometimes justified other times not. When your car breaks down, I mean, I think about how awful and experience it is if you don't have a lot of money goes the repair shop, they tell you it's going to be who knows how much money to repair that vehicle. You may even pay that money, you get the vehicle back. And you get it back, still has the same troubles as it had before you took it in. I mean, it's a common refrain. And we have tracked since 1993 the complaints that we hear about at our team Clark consumer action center. And do you know that car repair has never been further down the list than third in a month? Many months is the number one most complained about thing we hear about it is a terrible, terrible problem. In so many of us live in communities where we're completely car dependent. We don't have our car, how do we get to work? How do we get our kids? How do we go shopping? I mean, it's a terrible, terrible problem. So I want you to know that there are certain strategies that help, but most of them require advance work. Number one, I like mono brand, independent repair shops. You may not know what that expression means. But in most any midsize or large community in the United States, there are now independent repair shops that specialize in a particular brand of vehicle or very limited brands. There are independents that only work on Toyotas and dependents only work on mazdas hondas. Any of the Asian brands pretty much there are shops that specialize their shops specialized just in Hyundai and Kia, which are sibling brands. You go to Toyota independent shop, they also work on Lexus. And Honda on Acura. Because a lot of people aren't aware that when you see a brand like Lexus Acura infinity Nissan genesis for Hyundai, that those are marketing brands that share either a common platform or even many common parts. With the brand that is the main one. And so these independent shops, these monolines.

Please let them know about the four. Zero three b ripoffs. It is really really bad. Ugly that we treat people who work for nonprofits hospitals in schools so horribly badly. And this is the congress's fault. They did a give me to the insurance industry where people who work for traditional employers have access to The employer offers when an ultra low cost. 401k plan but sent teachers and others down the river with these massive rip off for three b plans that have humongous commissions and gigantic ongoing fees.
