"That your sports heroes. Maybe weren't the avengers that you thought they were. Maybe weren't the superheroes that you immortalized. I could tell you. The story of clarence weatherspoon hitting on my girlfriend at a nightclub. Are there any stories you guys have or your athletes became mere mortals. Man i guess. I guess in a weird way i was lucky. Enough to not have those types of interactions. I remember being disappointed. When i heard someone cursed when i was like oh man curses on a love you anymore. Jose can saco yeah. Follow him on twitter. He says lots of bad allusions of grandeur. When you're all eight. You know what i mean like can say getting another shot on the show. We talked about him the production meeting today some gilbert arenas the nba version of. Jose can saco. You guys aren't gonna let me play. None of you guys are gonna play. I'm just taking my ball and burning this thing down. I remember a funny bill. Buckner story that. I had just i dunno. It could have been anywhere from second to sixth grade. I can't really remember but we took a field trip to pittsburgh and river three rivers stadium and they take us to the dugout and were standing there. And we're allowed to kind of you know mill around in the pirates. Play in clubs. And i've got this yellow pirates batting glove and me being me because of always been like this. You put me on the field. I see bill buckner. And larry bowa having a catch. I stroll right up to the two of them and ask them. Hey could you sign my glove. And larry bowa signs in that gupta bill buckner and he looks at me and he looks at the dugout and he sees my entire class of like thirty kids. He goes not signing for all these kids. I think the only one who's unafraid. To come up here. And he was like all right so he signed a glove and gave it to me and him boa went back to having a catch and then a few years later he gave me one of my greatest sports memories of all time as an eighty six mets fan. So thank you man. I told you my memory of that event day was my dad. Passed out the shower to sleep with shower setup twenty-seven musclemen and he was knocking down one by one. All my musclemen action figures. My father had a whole table and he swears to this day. In land in orlando there was one muscle man that is still standing on that desk on that table. Pass down the shower. That's he's asleep over the to. His credit came back to play for the red sox again. I believe after that happened in eighty six buckner should be in the hall of fame. Let's be honest brockman hall of fame as such different ideas hall of fame. I mean you right. You can't tell the story of baseball without can also never struck out three times in a single game lifetime three hundred hitter. Almost three thousand hits bill buckner hall of famer but remembered for one thing. Wow bill buckner had almost three thousand hits. Yes that's impressive. I used to be one of those. Holy grail numbers in baseball. Right i would still is. I think three thousand three thousand hits might still be the last holy grail. Maybe three hundred wins. It's hundred home runs. I mean that's that's everybody. Twenty seven hundred against kenley jansen and the dodgers is. What was that last night. I will say that was ridiculous. It was ridiculous. But i will say kenley jansen kinda got screwed. The dodgers got hoes last night Should have been a called strike. Three on a non a check swing first base. Umpire wasn't having it. Dave roberts immediately tossed and then jansen proceeded to give up a two run single right after that but dodgers got hose but they do have a closer problem. I don't think we can be the closer going forward. I was always having dinner last night and mala buna restaurant that it looked like it had half the real housewives of every tv show up forty five dollar chicken and i heard the scream from the bar and i thought of vendor pumpad dropped martini kenley jansen given up another own run you really ran the game with your with your meal stat. Rock and culver city. Locke's making the rounds. I'm like picking up. I'd the from the numbers went to rocco making my house last night. Oh the dodgers didn't cover who's lying. She's running numbers right now. Notice there's one of us who's not eating this piece in the studio today getting cold to in a row though for kenley so as a real issue going on yeah. That's honestly like baseball. I really feel like is the one sport you have to find the moments of magic things to rally around the game. It's such a grind. It's every day. And for the for the san francisco giants to take three out of four from the dodgers in. La commanding first place. Lead big for the giants. The opposite end of that spectrum was last. Night at fenway park. I'm sure your dad texas you about it. It wasn't a ridiculous game. Suddenly boston can't score any runs against the yankees. All of the sudden about to lose their third straight to the bombers. After winning the first seven to begin the year kiki hernandez has an amazing it. That after alex do go and bobby dall back get on base boom tie game three three miraculous tenth inning win after the yankees score one in the top half just tremendous in those types of things not that the red sox needs turn around by any stretch of imagination. But it's something they've done all years. Come from behind win games and just another one against your rival. Let's propels you and helps bury them. It was awesome last night. What goes in the end of the year highlight tape when you if the red sox win the world series and they make a documentary about the season. You have to have moments like last night to fill out the tape. Yeah so it's only july got action bronson calling in and a little bit about forty minutes or so away from bam lava very much looking forward to that beautiful man olympics begin tonight live from tokyo on. Nbc plus stream the biggest moments from the games right here on peacock get live coverage original series daily highlights replays. And more when you sign up go to peacock. Tv dot com slash olympics get started. South's out to my buddy salima. Masekela going to be covering the surfing over in tokyo before to that and talk olympics next ben lyons rich on the rich eisen show..

"Paul forty two eight and you don't see centers playing forty two minutes in the nba anymore. Thirty eight bridges thirty seven crowd and we should mention dettori. Craig right injury. Because they're down to seven guys now with sarge and craig out and those are not sexy name. They're not big minutes players. But you're either gonna play those seven guys all the way through or you're going to you're going to get some nater minutes and some kaminsky minutes and every little second matters in like your now adding up surviving one of those injuries. We saw tonight doable surviving to. Yes doable two. Sons are now huge favorites to win the series. But it's it's every little thing matters clip. I wanna go back to something. You said the over. Help thing when i asked you about lopez. That's kind of what i was getting. I i'm watching again. I'm like. I wonder if lopez was so good and they stopped switching right. They switched one to four but not one to five. We're going to lopez drop but we're going to hear them up. We're going to bring them up a little higher and and you know. Try to try to help in when we should help in. And i almost wondered. Are they helping too much. Because brooke has been so good but like you said you. Slow it down. It's easy for me watching film like in real time. You're talking about devon booker and chris paul coming around to pick toward you on the wing. Your inclination is going to be shoot my guys a little bit behind like i gotta reach in a little bit or i got i got i got a lunge in a little bit like i. Just think the sons made a lot of really good shots. But i do think that helped versus stay home equation maybe could be dialed back like ten percent towards stay home. But those are really. When you're on the sideline watching a game and you see it. Unfold in real time like those are really hard reads to make. Oh no question. that's where you know. They they threw in a couple of blitzes. When portis i came in the game in the first half they had a couple of blitzes there. They have everything you know like watching all these games. They've shown a lot of different coverages in a lot of the series. You know But they're most comfortable and listen. They'd been a terrific defensive team now since but gut there is tonight. They played more out of their base. And thought ju holidays pick and roll. Defence was kind. He was defensively. Oh yes great is incredible But yeah that's what i'm saying. Is i think a lot of times people want to sit around and talk about. Jeff made the point tonight. It's a coverage it's coverages too coverage undestand is let lists tonight out of those twenty. Three's i would dare to say seven to eight to nine of those. Were driving kick threes. Where there was a help. Read on the play. And i'm saying what you're saying is that that's something that you can clean up in a day. Where maybe like you saying is you. Don't make sure to penetrating drive or you know when it's when it's flatter we don't have to help as much and guys in this league and they've got veteran guys are so smart. That's something that they'll be able to You know be able to make that adjustment is sometimes. It can make a significant significant difference. Everything that we've seen with the box just throughout the postseason is that it's real hard for them to survive. A down middleton game They just need them. They really need them. Because i know holiday was off offensively and he probably shot a little bit too much. But i didn't have a problem. With most of the shots they really need middleton to provide those relief baskets especially if they're not playing great defensively. I mean the sun scored one hundred eighteen points in both these games. I mean the walkie came in is a number one defensive teams in the playoffs so I know that milton can get white hot. But he is very insulin. The way he plays as big and so You know they get an average middleton game tonight. They may win And so middleton is is I know it's a big. He's gotta bring it. He just he he's he he doesn't have to. Have you know the the you know the fourteen of twenty game or whatever but he can't go five or sixteen in this situation he just can't and that and that is You know obviously a lot of reasons. Why the sons one but you know there were so many thais middleton how shots that if he makes them it makes a difference and it gets a little bit over the hump and he couldn't do it you. You couldn't ask for more than janas tonight. You couldn't ask for more from holiday. Defensively you could ask for more for middleton to win a game on the road at this level zach. You have to get that level of performance. It's the finals. Well that's what i wanted to. I wanted to switch to that under the floor. Because we've been talking a lot about phoenix's offense versus milwaukee's defense. I can't decide if milwaukee had a good offensive game. I'll tell you what the numbers say. The numbers say they had one hundred fifteen points per hundred possessions. Which would be like ninth or tenth offensively in the regular season so like good but not great and sometimes it gets a great team and the sons are just a flat out awesome team. That's the headliner. The whole place by the way. The sons are freaking awesome awesome. How does not like. How could you not like watching the way they play. I mean you why. Their fans are just delirious. How can you not love the way they play they're awesome. They have no weak links to do everything well. They are the most resourceful team in the nba on offense. They just problems all problems problems. But so you're gonna if you're milwaukee. Good on offense might not be good enough to win. Some of these games was not good enough tonight. And i look at the numbers. I said it was okay. Eighteen offensive rebounds on fifty-one. mrs and nine turnovers. I'm not sure you're going to be able to duplicate those those numbers and sort of rely on that kind of just possession grinding to lift your offense from if they just had an average offensive rebounding game their overall offensive number would been below average. It may be bad so cliff when you're watching their possessions particularly in the half court because we know what to seem can do in transition. They're absolutely lethal. Like what are you seeing. Where can they go to maybe get some easier. Looks for holiday in middleton like is there any is there any adjustments to be made on that end for the bucks while i thought the one thing that stood out to me from from game to game one is. They were very much in the paint. Drew got i agree with what. Brian's drew holiday had a lot of like good drives where you know he missed in. They're not easy shots but their shots that most nights. I would think that he would make those lefty little like half hoops and stuff that he's so good at tonight. He had a bunch of them that went in and out and ate and ate and was big at the rim to like. Give some credit for that too. He made those shots tough. Yeah and then to me. The middleton tease It's the same thing you know. He was one for six from three. He had some big shots at didn't go down and in but again i think what will happen is it's amazing. You know i you know i. This is one thing to happen to me. I've never i've never forgotten. The euro advance scout with the knicks would have been twenty one years ago. Is you know jeff. It told me is when you're an advance scout once all the stuff down. It's like a coaching clinic. Every night. In so once i got comfortable. Whenever i watched miami was pat riley san antonio it was pop in the sixers. It was larry brown. I would always go to the press conference because you know when they felt like it you would learn stuff and one night in cleveland. You guys will remember. This was randy. Wittman was the coach. It was a team. A young andre miller I'm trying to think clarence weatherspoon. Those guys get off to a good start in. They had a bunch of injuries but anyway they.

"Our knowledge passion of all things sports. Welcome to the game. What's up i welcome. Welcome mr k. Is here mr k. Yes we're definitely talking some basketball today. Let's do it can't talk about anything else. Do you wanna talk baseball. Whether knowledge what other knowledge is there gung ho and other sports. This is perfect. He's we were talking about. We collect trading cards talking about things in the nineties. What else was there. There's trading cards. There's those vhs things called talking about like the nba superstars thing but not everybody knows about those. Those are those are style. Gop so you know about those good job. Those are awesome man like music set to videos about like barkley jordan of course with like the slow motion. What's it called. Take my breath away by berlin a small town small town. Small town mellon cow mellencamp. That's like the best video set to music ever so good so good anyways. I don't know. I'm trying to think of other stuff that we used to collect back in the day like those cards. Remember you got that. You got the eddie jones. Signed the value became the value. Lower once you get it signed 'cause then it's not in good condition and he was the rookie card. It was like a stadium clipper card. That was the top thing at the time. You know the lexus to the top so toyota. Any jones was amazing though. Here's a quality is a quality player. Unfortunately stopped collecting right one. Kobe got into the league. And all that. All the like heyday of all these great players coming in. I kinda stopped right before that. There were great stars but they were so over produced. You know who even knows how many how many millions and millions of those too much is just too much and so it's just like where everything is worthless though who knows. I don't know maybe. I had all those fears many to ninety three flyers. I had so much. I have a whole box so i had like five shacks. Five clarence weatherspoon five angles. He's in pensive stance on his card. He was my favorite player. Back in the got rid of my whole collection for fifty bucks dummy. Now you got your life back for fifty bucks. It's like it's like that thing from bronx tale seen in bronx tale. He says to the tha chazz palminteri gangster character. He says. What are you doing yelling at that guy across physios me twenty bucks. He's like he's a dumb skier. Whatever he's like you know he he's like do you. Do you like that guys. Like no i just want my. We'll look at it this way. You got rid of him for the rest of your life for twenty bucks from now on every time you see sees you. He's going to run the other way. The that's the way of thinking about..

"New You you spoke about a lot of the guys that are more established kenniston particularly because you're annual carolina have seen Both culture wide. And while you're sitting at home watching leap a curious to know your early impressions of the charlotte. Hornets guard. Lamelo ball Man with mellow bala pay per view. Man i'm just waiting for the charlotte wanted to figure out. They got a franchise player on the end and they put their kids in the starting lineup. I keep it real with you. Like i live in north carolina in my life. And these and one basketball player in israel. And on his franchise. Where i say i would pay money to go see them break. And that was that was very johnson was when grandma mark. Unlv charlotte and i wanted. I learned off the poster. I wanted to larry johnson jersey. I wanted to larry johnson hairclips. I wanted to down a middle i wanted. I was very often everything. So that the last guy that made me feel like you know what man. I might get a couple tickets and go down in charlotte and watch the game. Lamelo ball is that guy. Who does it remind you of mind of. Damn it's gonna be funny to say but he just reminds me of version of what we can even more policy. The more offensively skilled version of his brother had the same toolbox can see the court they both great passes great rebounders for their size or guard on the wing but man that lamelo man he gives. Shoot that ball. He got a real good finishing package while he can really score around the rim. Got it got a lot of the. I q man so i say a better version of a custom. Something you've mentioned them johnson and we're talking about him. I got flashback to playing where the graphics of those guys look. Horrible larry johnson and alonzo mourning. Look like each other. But you talk about larry. Johnson started i kind of helped me thinkers specifically because I've heard people say that i As a cross between anthony bennett. I've heard larry johnson. I've heard charles barkley of her clarence. Weatherspoon you man. He reminds me of a guy played college basketball at university. Awake for is right here in north carolina. Your minds me of rodney rogers. Yes reminds me a lotta rodney rodney. Be reading. I mean roddy. Roddy various closer for six power forward. It was undersized swinger but yeah he reminds me reminds me of Rodney rogers. And larry johnson doesn't back players comparisons those two guys. That's real just real questions. you talked about Just a you kids today. And i know there's some social media cracking up with just today's trainers. Why do you dislike today's basketball climate and grassroots basketball as it relates to trade I would say man because it's a lot of well mcmahon trickery it's a lot of disagreeing with a man trying to hustle parents in trying to hustle and if somebody like meat is very dedicated and passionate about basketball. I just don't like it then. I it's become a real circus on instagram. And you got guys running around calling themselves. Nba trainers like. You're a trainer man like you're a rebounder you're a hired rebounded like somebody pays found like even nba players. They pay certain guys in the summertime to rebound for this. And then you get on instagram. You wanna wear a bunch of outfits and stuff it'd be cool and be one of the rapids and try to dress like say yeah. I'm an nba train. Nah a rebound. You're not helping any of these out get better. They're not getting better. Because of anything you were doing rebound so like a lotta guys. Knock it off. And it's a real old easy to game like feel handy wanted to one of is not the greatest basketball minds in the world. That's a real player. Development coach a real player development coach. Lloyd here's started out. Pd where development. You know what i'm saying. Those are the real guys like health and to get to the next level. Rico hines the guys man. That's the real guys in the basketball community man. I'm chilling pay attention. The real basketball has not named art but people who like you know kind of libya through the basketball feel. There's a little bit player development world guys like adore. Your gosh sam darnold like. Od's man these are the people we need to give you. The flowers would give. Those guys are file. I agree with you on that. I think we look do looking gosh sham. And you look at strictly. I feel like for basketball. Yeah rock as well. I know you can't jeez. I feel like certain guys are now getting the respect on social media and from younger the getting recognized from yours. Like i remember. Rod told me that trae young reached out to him during his classes. 'cause he wanted to learn from him like like these guys that were lessons talked about before clinton means that are now going to near flowers later. Relaxed fee radio. They demand like i bought the dennis smith junior yesterday. And i said man. I gotta get linked up with my mood mad about. I know you trained with him. If he didn't hear about something totally different. And i brought it up to him. I say yoga. I gotta get conversation about mood. I'll do that was my childhood idol man when he was at lsu and the guy gets blackballed back in the nineties. And now you would think people would come out and say you know the nba soon. That man apologies. So you know twenty or twenty years or whatever. We were wrong but who were wrong with our black we were wrong. We denies you situations and when he denied opportunity. Now you should be on some type of committee or some type of player committee. That guy needs to be in the basketball world. Like not listen. Is you know training. He needs to be employed by the nba man. Alleged question also. And i want to be fair and i want you met and i got asked. People works with a game..

"Can be on N BA opening night We are fired up, fans are fired up. Everybody's fired up. This is one of those circle. The calendar counted days a little later in the calendar than we're used to. But nonetheless, it is. Here It is time. And you know, Carrie and I were talking before the show and thinking, you know, who should we get out as a guest? Who would be the perfect opening night guest and we decided it should probably be somebody with it least seven NBA titles, at least right, at least. Yeah, And you know, it Turns out there aren't many of those dudes. There's very few guys who won seven NBA titles. We found one. And it's Robert Horry. Mr. Clutch, joining us on the show, Robert Happy opening night And how fired up for you to get this thing started. Happy game late to you two guys, I'm fine up because I'm really interested to see Some of my favorites back in the lead from Indri. Cady. Steph. You know, Carrie, I'm really excited. But then also I'm seeing if the new addition Lakers carried peak, so I'm excited. Robert, We got great matchup opening night. Steph Curry, Kevin Durant. Warriors nets. Both of these guys coming off of long. Layoffs can either of them figure out a way to kind of Get what they get that magic back and should they be treated his M V P candidates right from the start of the season based on their resumes. Um, I You know what? I think both should be looked at, But I still think it's gonna be hard because they envy situations that I think Katie situations will be harder because he's playing with Dominic Guy like Carrie. But step. On the other hand, he lost his his sidekick and play for the year. So he has the golden opportunity to be that guy again. That school is a lot of porn, get a lot of spotlight on him. He doesn't have to share it. Like he did when Katie was with him in the warrior. So for me, I still think LeBron is a favor, even though he didn't win a dish here, which I think you should have. But I'm you know, LeBron fan. So, uh, it's gonna be close this year. Yeah, well, you should be a LeBron fan, not just cause he's LeBron but also because you're now doing work for a spectrum SportsNet l A has the broadcast and get treatment. You know, I never thought in a million years that talking about basketball and getting paid for, you know, I thought we'd be in the barbershop talking about understanding on the corners like in the old days, but you know, it's It's fun. I enjoy. I get to watch the games, You know, Think about me. I've always loved basketball. But now that I have to report on it, I'm ad out more deep into it. And get to know guys that you know those 78 guys on the bitch you might not know. So you gotta know those guys now. So, um, I love of basketball has grown since that stopped playing seven time NBA champion Robert Horry joining us courtesy of Bet online, Robert Lakers analysts and the Los Angeles Lakers coming off of this championship, the over under on their win total this season, 47 a half in a 72 game season. Do you think about that total given that They played. So recently. There's such a short layoff from the MBA bubble in that championship to opening night. Tip off, you know, and LeBron and Anthony Davis could be sitting out and sitting minutes more than more than usual or more that they wanted the beginning of the season. How do you feel about that? 47 a half You know, I'm in a I'm agreeing with it because I think they have a golden opportunity. I know if I was talking about the Clippers, but I think you know they're right there behind him at 46 a half I think with them losing Montreal's to the Lakers, that gap should be a bill of it wider because I think people forget the key roles that monstrous played with them. I know they added Ibaka, but I don't think he boxes going. Bring them what they need that monstrous boat. So I think the Lakers are the favorite to win, not just because of what they have and LeBron. Maybe but what they added to their team and added four great pieces to that team is still gonna be except on. I think whose is getting better? I think you know, KCP is when those guys that nobody talked about that had a great bubble and I looking forward to seeing what they can do with the additions. So I still think there's a favor so we should mention that they were getting these over under numbers from bet online dot net and Robert. I know you're you're involved with that as well. How do you find time to do all this? You know, it is difficult is the crazy part my schedule now I've never been this busy. Um and I'm doing this stuff for BET bet online, and it's cool with them because this is basketball is talking basketball. You talking numbers, and I'm learning a lot from this, and it's just weird. This is my year to learn because I'm actually back in school at the University of Alabama trying to finish up my degree with that. So I'm doing that I'm doing. You know the spectra stuff I'm doing, you know special stuff for the Lakers. I'm all over the board, man. And I love it because doing this pandemic you have to find time to keep yourself busy or You're gonna put on that cove in 19 that mean that weight and I don't want to throw that weight, man. I'm trying to get it down, trying to take managing. So it's It's been interested to all the things that I've been. I've come across them. Maybe we do right now. You know, since you mentioned University of Alabama, I gotta come clean. I got a bone to pick with you meant, uh, I was an undergrad. At the same time You were an undergrad. I went to Stanford and I have very much remember a first round NC double a tournament game where you and the trail spree well, and your boys knocked us out a really good Stanford team out in the first round, and I never quite forgave you for that. I gotta be honest. Hey, You know what? Blame Adam Keefe. The reason I say that because any time we played someone the coaches had they had the unique thing of hype me up. Oh, Adam keeps better than you. He's ranked higher than you. You no doubt about it. All right? It happened with him. That happened with Clarence Weatherspoon. That happened with Popeye Jones movie Three guys that we put it happened in shock, too. But, you know, shocking. Well, so Real, You know, three of those guys with hired to me one time should have his shack. Clarity. No. Okay. Hey, went to the sixes. I don't wanna go to Philly, you know, then Adam with the Atlanta where I wanted to go on. I was mad at that, but I blame those guys. Actually, That's a game that I always talk about, because if you look at that game, though, if you remember Adam was killing us in the first half court spree was guarded, and I told Coaster, says FDs. I want him in the second half and I shut him down second hand, you know so that because you know, he was like, Oh, he's gonna get you filed. So I said, we're gonna go with your game plan, but second half we going my game plan and I shot at him down the second half. We won that game. That's funny. Adam's kid is on the Stanford team now, so I'll take it up with him and see what he has. But Robert what we got You feel like we're kind of burying the lead here being in the Bay Area. Yeah, we asked you about the Lakers. What about the Warriors? Right. You look at the number for the season 38 a half. Ah, lot of differing opinions on exactly what to expect from this team. What do you expect from this Warriors team? I expect the wars to be maybe 1/4 of 50. Because I'm thinking about this step that sat back and let everybody disregard him, he said back, you know, stroking his chin like y'all forgot. I'm I'm back back. N v P. I just been out because I had my hand hurts, you know, so he's gonna come back with it and let's be honest Kramer Green contest last year all so he should be fresh. They got some good additions and and Wiseman and you break and I think we witnessed that's the guy that can get lost in the mix. He's one of guys so unassuming. You don't know what he's gonna do on how he's gonna play. But you look at those five guys, they have a good rest. I don't know what the best looks like. I hadn't have a chance to him in the off season. But if you got clay I mean there and you got dream on NBA champions that pedigree. You gonna make the playoffs and I think people are forgetting about them. And the crazy thing is, I kind of got steps as my m v P because he doesn't have plate of Katie to defer to. It's all about him now. So we talked about the M V P race talking about Steph Curry. You did mention James Wiseman there, Robert. I do wanna pick your brain a little bit about him. Second overall pick Anthony Edwards goes one. There's a few other guys who are going to be in consideration for the rookie of the year, right off the bat. Mellow ball comes to mind. What do you think? Wiseman slots into this race, Given how much the Warriors are going to need to rely on him without a clay Thompson on the floor and without really any other proven Biggs?.

Also, I'm seeing if the new addition Lakers carry peak, so I'm excited. I think both should be looked at, But I still think it's gonna be hard because they envy situations that I think Katie situations little bit harder because he's playing with Dominic Guy like Carrie. But step on the other hand, he lost. Is this a sidekick and play for the year? So he has the golden opportunity to be that guy again. That school is a lot of porn. Give a lot of spotlight on him. He doesn't have to share like he did when Katie was with him in the Warriors. So Me. I still think LeBron is the favorite. Even though he didn't win a dish it was I think you should have, but I'm you know, LeBron fan. So, uh, it's gonna be close this year. Yeah, well, you should be in LeBron fan, not just cause he's LeBron but also because you're now doing work for a spectrum SportsNet l A has the broadcast and get treatment. You know, I never thought in a million years that talking about basketball and getting paid for, you know, I thought we'd be in the barbershop, talking about on the standing on the corner, like in the old days, but you know, it's It's fun. I enjoy. I get to watch the games, You know, Think about me. I've always loved basketball. But now that I have to report on it, I'm down more deep into it. Tip off, you know, in LeBron and Anthony Davis could be sitting out and sitting minutes more than more than usual or more that they wanted the beginning of the season. How do you feel about that? 47 a half You know, I'm in a I'm agreeing with it because I think they have a golden opportunity. I know everybody was talking about the clippers, but I think you know they're right there behind him at 46 a half I think with them losing Montreal's to the Lakers, that gap should be a bill of it Water because I think people will get the key roles. That mantra is played with them. I know they added Ibaka, but I don't think he boxes going. Bring them what they need that monstrous boat. So I think the Lakers are the favorite to win, not just because of what they have and LeBron 80, but what they added to their team and added four great pieces to that team is still gonna be except on. You know, it is difficult is the crazy part my schedule now I've never been this busy, um on doing this stuff for BET bet online, and it's cool with them because this is basketball is talking basketball. You're talking numbers, and I'm learning a lot from this, And it's just weird. This is my year to learn because I'm actually back in school at the University of Alabama trying to finish up my degree with that. So I'm doing that I'm doing. You know the spectrum stuff I'm doing. You know, special stuff for the Lakers. I'm all over the board, man. And I left because doing this pandemic you have to find time to keep yourself busy, or you're gonna put on that. Over 19 that mean that weight and I don't want to throw that weight, man. I'm trying to get it down, trying to take managing. So it's It's been interested in all the things that I've been. I've come across some unable to do right now. You know, since you mentioned University of Alabama, I gotta come clean. I got a bone to pick with you, man. I was an undergrad. About the same time you were an undergrad. I went to Stanford. And I have very much remember a first round NC double a tournament game where you and the trail spree well, and your boys knocked us out a really good Stanford team out in the first round, and I never quite forgave you for that. I gotta be honest. You know what? Blame Adam Keefe? The reason I say that because any time we play someone the coaches had they had the unique thing of hyping me up. Oh, Adam keeps better than you. He's ranked higher than you. You know, dead another. That right? It happened with him. That happened with Clarence Weatherspoon. That happened with Popeye Jones. I'm only three guys that we put it happened in shock, too. But, you know, shack well, so Riddles. You know, three of those guys with hired to me one time should have his shack, Clarence, you know, Okay. Hey. Went to the sixes. I don't wanna go to Philly. You know, then Adam with the Atlanta where I wanted to go on. I was mad at that. But I blame those guys..

"Smith. They like put out a thing to all The fans like any fan named Joe Smith Show up in like, Come take a picture. So they hit even at this giveaway photo on his wall was like a poster that gave away where it's like Joe Smith standing there like I'm one of those, you know, it's like a set a great backdrop or whatever. He's hold the basketball and there's like five or six people around and we were just random people from around the Bay Area named Joe Smith and has their names and numbers of Joseph Smith. There's a Joe Smith and he had a really old woman sitting next to him. She's like in a chair with a blanket on her lap. Polly. She's got the blanket there. Court. It, says Josephine Smith, so they got Joseph in space. Pretty funny. There's some some listener out there. Seen that picture that you ask your buddy. Ask your body even if he still has his the clerk. See if he's got a car. Do you know he had a cat named Kobe? He had a dog named Mugsy. Hey, was a die hard basketball guy still is die hard ass, but but he can't be die hard warriors of his name in his cat, Kobe, you know what it was doing when they did the when we were in third grade or fourth grade. They have the All Star game at Oracle at the arena in Oakland after they renovated coast, 2000 and Ethan famously like in our class. This is the coolest thing ever. It must have been 2000. So Kobe hadn't been in the league for that long and he was becoming a superstar. Ethan was at the arena for like the NBA Jam session is what they used to call it. It's like that the fan event, you know, the weekend of the draft of the three All Star Game and Kobe at one point like called him over, and he's got a photo of he and Kobe Kobe is like hugging him from behind. He's got the little Kobe froze. So when we were eight years old, nine years old Kobe was that I mean this. This blew him away. So he fell in love with Kobe. He got a cat that year and named what happens to the fact that picture was taken with a camera. It was a camp where the picture was not taken with a phone. I mean, you got last time was the last time you took a picture with something other than your phone. You know, I mean, like, I mean, 1983 when he took that picture, he had to wait to have the film developed before. Yeah, Way came out What we have with our our photo. When I was a kid, we were. We were still dropping enough of waiting for the hour long photo developing Not a little photo mat shack that Paul that point to drive up to in the mall was just just wanna play until 2011. Wow. No, I did it all the way past the Giants world. Syriza know Where's the Lakers and 2011 years of looking at it? He was never t was do warriors. Sixers T was Pistons T was Buck's Doug. It's Sixers. Bulls, calves, thunder calves, hawks, nets, Lakers use bonkers careers You're Deanna Steph Curry. Just 3456789 10 11 12 13 14 15 different stops. Wow. Joe Smith, that bouncer. I don't know much money made it what it is in his career. The Warriors got rid of him in the third season traded him for Jim Jackson and Clarence Weatherspoon. That was so warriors were so depressing back then. God, they were so bad. It was just in that bad uni and everything. I disagree. I like the like. The lows could look remember that little minute. Where's the we believe under champion? Yeah. Which I guess has some sort of retro appeal. But honestly, it depresses me when I see it. I just I'm OK with it. I just can't stand the or my brother used to rock and orange D og. You and I just couldn't start at the orange to not going to do with my life. I mean, they were blue for me. I mean, navy and like that's okay. I just can't remember the world. Those weird, Yeah. The origin of life. It's like the Diamondbacks with that weird like baby Blue said You guys don't even that's not even one of your colors. No. Yeah, They have a faint light like a good little gun blew on there anyway. It's bizarre. That's the last time the Warriors had that this Hyah! Pick was your boy was there I was, uh, wasn't even called oracle. Back Then they called In 95. Was that what I was going with? You may not have been even that yet. They have the draft day event. I don't think guys. I don't think Raymond Ritter was with the team back then. It was just it was the great Julie Marvel who's now the mom of Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect James Marvel, But when did Raymond said baseball? Raymond. Hey, Raymond, If you're listening, buddy to resume their way all the way over. Yeah, somebody going is linked in. Check it out. Yeah, Let's see here. He's in his 22nd year. So Yeah, 98 99 like that. Yeah, that's right. Alright, so, yeah, coinciding with listen. You know he was with the Lakers for all those years, all right? Right. Ravens got it. Ravens got quite the resume, man. So anyway, I'm all ready for the draft Copes. Let's get it going. And we got a good show today. Kyle Shanahan. Gonna join the show is not very hider 40 Niner Player of the Week. "The audience here just through your prism how did you experience the end of the last hour what what were you hearing in your head set I want to take people inside of the show here no matter how boring it is I think many of you have misunderstood because you you think I'm actually being mean to the Bristol board when we're just trying to find some semblance of doing the show and sinking into the mistakes and everything else because we're doing the show differently than we ever get to do it and our chemistry is all screwed up and our communication is all screwed up it is hard to get the most basic things from Bristol because we're all talking to each other and just it's a weird way to do the show how did you experience the end of the last hour the Bristol board of standards James by the way I called big game James so anyway last hour we're getting down like to the Hortons at work out here and Tony is talking and now you start like tapping your wrist like a Tony you only got like twenty twenty five seconds here because every because because because I don't know and I'd look I find out after the break the Tony doesn't have a count down in his ear so I'm tapping my wrist but nobody can tell Tony that he's talking and he's gonna talk right through the break so I start tapping my wrist in a bit of a panic because I haven't had to relay a message to tell me that I can't relate silently with just eye contact so now I'm doing charades I'm I'm I'm I'm hitting a watch that doesn't exist on my wrist to just get him to finish then what happened that I gotta be honest I did the same thing and I know it's only saw it so it was both of us doing the same thing because we both have big game James Cowton those down in our headset so we could hear it so I just imagine once Tony gave the ball back to you there's no way you're making another pass because very short on time but it's all right you're in the mood for the couple and that is exactly how it happened it is the first time ever that still got just told no lies I absolutely had the ball and I was I was clearly the person who needed to take the last shot we were up against the shot clock and I just fumbled got scared and threw the ball to stir god yeah you which mall management and then Clarence Weatherspoon has to take a rushed shot it's so weird because you just said you knew we were under a crunch because you're doing charades Hey Anthony Anthony passes the ball and you don't I didn't pass the test I'm well over still got his head and just being a good teammate bailed my whatever the time even though wasn't the question sometimes abetted the man's burden sometimes you pass the big shot Bob so we have to play sound back before big James big game James is gonna play that sound back for you because he you then we moved in in a good twenty to twenty five minutes we got him the sound that we want so that we can do some semblance of the normal show that we do so what you're about to hear okay is absolute panic for me basically when I throw it to stew god's big game James is on for three and so still got Susan hearing anything he's just starting that I've decided to throw the ball into the stands so that's the question that you were insuring was what was nice is people in the history of what's the question you would ask me I mean will play back your to second I think it was sneaky good looking people at ESPN I did have that list on me unfortunately I had the list of sneaky nice people at ESPN okay what you know what's funny about that I think you will hear in the sound that big game James about to place that in those four seconds of fumbling before I decided to throw you the ball I couldn't find the words sneaky anywhere in my head because I was in a full here you will hear me fumble around and then I just kick the ball into the stands and then Stuttgart's bailed me out so here is our panic I want you to understand it when I'm throwing the ball to stick out in a panic the board on big game James has told me three to like he's counting down so here is what that ends up sounding like and you'll absolutely here because I know I felt it means fumbling around for the word shrieking and never finding to god so what's your list of us surprised and some people at ESPN he's got to encouraging Jay's offense Dominique Foxworth because I thought to myself I'm not he is not speaking the question for me I all right so I'm going to play the blues played again just so that you can hear I am asking speaking handsome but I forgot the words leaking and I just go to surprise and still got just still dont is leaving a parking one of those metered parking situations where you have to pay to get out and the flap what's that thing called that stops in front of your car what's it the I don't know what that is called the fit the thing that Kim I don't know what that thing is called anyways to go just he just blows through it like it comes down the arm comes down and still got you by hitting the gas the stock plan again big game to god so what's your list of a surprise and some people at ESPN her it is got to encouraging Jason fitz Dominique Foxworth I agree hi Sir I have just realized that you should probably just call and James then yes I'm I'm a little scared I keep stumbling around thank you thank you for the help there I have lost confidence because of that whole thing that happened at the end of the last hour were our children a big moment and threw the ball into the stands that is straight docket is brought you by straight talk.

"And the fact that, like he's, he's fat and size. Like let's start there. I agree. Whoever did the meme saying, Farland. Farland hilarious man. That's shows absolutely hilarious. He's going into world for program parlance. From shows a photo of him in like five years after all the eating in New Orleans. Very awesome. A bouncy f- letting freak right now. Yeah, we're one injury away. Yeah. We can say for anyone in the Chan, but like he relies so much on this freakish athleticism. He's big. I compared to Larry Johnson. Larry Johnson after his second season. Got a really bad back injury. That changed his whole game Johnson was skilled enough that he changes entire game. I know. But I was going to bring that example up because that's kind of who he is. But Larry Johnson headway more of a game like Zion. What is game besides offensive? Rebound put back. Yeah. But I still think Larry Johnson head to head to head to discover and can shoot too. I mean Larry. Yeah, he threes in college threes, does not make you a useful shooter in the I mean I mean he's still shooting. Here's all you actually think he's going to be a bus. No. All I'm saying is that if you just take step back from early. We're really close to the picture right now. Let's take like let's stand on the other side of the auditorium, and take a look at the picture. You see you see a couple of guys who like I'm. You see a guy that looks like he would be also equally as comfortable sitting on a couch. Here's, here's gonna say that. Yeah. He, he has a bit of Kyle Lowry them. But let's let's compare them to other. You couldn't see him blown up real quick. No, I'm just saying. I see. He's got a little Kyle Lowry disease, New Orleans. The drink compare him as a prospect to LeBron James, or Anthony Davis unfair. It's unfair. How's that on fair? He's a little undersized. Firs. Yeah. I mean to, to Kramer's point, I don't think he's as can't miss as abroad greed or even Anthony Davis, agreed and signed by saying that like LeBron is the most can't miss prospect, we will ever see period. And, and also he also he hit the grand slam. He did everything almost perfectly now. Zion will not like maybe better. Comparison is Anthony to hear a college. The thing with Anthony Davis is while he played well in college. It wasn't like he was Anthony Davis was doing some cool stuff. He was blocking shop. He's got the size. He. Size where it was like, oh, shit. And then it was like after a year this guys shooter to like, but I think maybe there's maybe a better comparison is in a weird way. Kevin durant. We're Kevin Durant had the look, but also his body didn't look like an NBA player when they're drafted. Kevin durant. I'm like this guy is gonna get fucking destroyed. And then some trainers got to any hidden more European also. Yeah. And the game fit him better. So I think maybe Kevin Durant is probably a better comparison and certainly his ceiling. It was the fact on Ohio State Jared cylinder. Yeah. That's what Zion could be. No. I think you could be like Clarence Weatherspoon or something. You know what I mean? Here's here's the thing, right? We we've not seen him play a ton of games where he was surrounded by trees big men. Yeah. Large men, right. NBA it's not a big. It's not about big Minh anymore. The game is completely changed when you're two guards or six six six seven. Like he, he is the same. He's absolutely. The same height as some guys that are just like dead eye shooters, you stand in the corner. I I know he's got like girth, but I want to see him down low like is he going to really move cousins around?.

"They very artfully scrammed or the dragged Bledsoe out of that matchup 'cause miratec was nearby as you get out at that looks pretty good to me. I like if I'm Milwaukee the number one thing, I'm scared of is the kyri Horford pick and roll. That's the focus of my house will how can I make that less dangerous? I thought that looked kind of good Boston would obviously then see that coming anticipated set up some counters and this and that, but I I kinda wanna make them go through that motion a little bit more. And I thought what was amazing about that? Is again the walkie is not a team that switched a lot during the regular season. So to be able to do that the switch itself. Okay. Not that hard. But to get into exactly what you're talking about with the scream and getting Bledsoe out of there. That's become second nature to Golden State. Hugh. Sten teams like that switch a lot. But to go to this at this point in the year. That's not an easy thing to do. And and I was amazed that they were able to do it a couple of times as well as they did. Now, if they had to do it a more high volume we'll see if they can actually get it done possession after possession after possession. Here's another coaching question for you. This is relevant in both the Philly Toronto series, and the Milwaukee Boston one Baynes cannot guard Jaanus I mean Jonah says not shooting while with beans on the floor. But he has have it in my notes somewhere. I think he has twelve free throws in eighteen minutes with Banja Bank just can't guard him at what point do you have to start thinking we need to match Horford in Janas minutes because we just don't have anyone else that can guard a minute. And I think Toronto is going to start grappling with the at. What point do we need to have Kosovo on the floor? Whenever Embiid is. Did you did you ever had a coaching decision where you really had to dramatically change your rotation? So one specific guy could guard another specific guy yet. Look, I where. Was it for us was last year in the regular season? We tried very hard to to match Avery Bradley's minutes to Kyrie's minutes when we played Boston because he could guard him, and, you know, breads great with stuff like that. Because his rotations are at least in a regular season are more irregular than just about anybody in the league. Most teams you can sit down and you'll go into a game. And you know, in they're going to sub people not with Brad. And so what he would do he'd get kyri out early and then bring him back. And so we had to just just what you said try to match him the the best one I've seen is when I was in assistant for Riley's gome way back. And my brother was coaching. The Knicks client we had Clarence Weatherspoon in Miami. Who'd been a really good player for us off the bench. We played them in a playoff series ended up losing a game seven at home. Maybe it was a game five I think it was game seven all those heat Knicks series blend together for me. Yeah. Exactly. Right. And some of them were five game series. But what my brother did is. He matched a literally every possession Marcus Camby on Clarence Weatherspoon in his link was too much for spoon. Spoon was only six seven. And he's like, yeah. And dominate other people. And I mean, literally whenever we'd since spoon to the bench Camby would go like he didn't even have to ask my brother after a while. He's just coming down into the game. And they took away our best our best bench player in that series. And so, yeah, those things that's like people always look for these big schematic things. I think it's more things like that matchups and we've already. Seen teams in the playoffs changed their lineup. Steve Kerr who never gets enough credit for what he does is.

"Certainly been in that ballpark. But I don't know anyone has had a better. I don't think there has been then I don't think I don't think anybody has ever been better in a final right agree with you. And and he absolutely carried that team. And then they had a couple of years where they weren't quite as where they weren't quite as good and then Dwayne, but Dwayne it in two thousand and six was sort of at the height of his notoriety. But then what happened with the LeBron and Bosch come into Miami? I think Dwayne in terms of the credit he's been given because they went to four straight finals and one tool of LeBron. And rightly so got, you know, a great deal of the credit more of the credit than anyone and Dwayne was seen as Scotty pip. In rather than Michael, Jordan. And I think it said a lot about Dwayne myself because Dwayne really worked to bring that altogether with Bosch. And LeBron, and I think a lot of guys even though they go to play together they wanna be the guy's going in somewhere, Dwayne flat. That was his franchise that was his city his town. You know that and he was willing to bring those guys in because he wanted to win. And while I think it did help him win. I think he's level of Toshio recognition actually declined because of that. And he really hasn't gotten. He'll be at first ballot hall of Famer, but still hasn't gotten the claim that he deserves one is the worst loss of stands career the one that that was the night you couldn't sleep more than you couldn't sleep any of the other night. I'll tell you what it was in a series. We ended up winning against Cleveland in in the series in the conference finals. So we at both games, but we opened in Cleveland. And so we had to come from way behind early in the game to win and game one. And then in game two we have a chance to take a to nothing lead on the road. And LeBron hits the shot that they still show every year when they're getting ready for the playoffs. Drives me crazy bad shoddy stand it was a bad shot. He made it, but it's not the shot that you want. I mean, you don't mind them taking that shot their stand should have been a second guy on him. No. And it just it drives me crazy because I didn't play it right defensively. And that could have cost us. It didn't end up costing us. We won the series in six games. But it could have I mean, and that goes back to you talking about the misery of coaching from me because we won that series in six games to go to the NBA finals and my overwriting memory from that series. Is that I screwed that up at the game too and got beat and didn't have a second defender on him. And if you ask me. My main memory of that series. That's it does anybody in the Van Gundy family have a sense of humor about your brother ending up on the ankle of Alonzo Mourning is can I find Van Gundy, anywhere, roaming, the earth on this on this continent or another one that would would find the humor in your brother? Jeff that photograph that I love that. If I were Jeff I would have it in my house. But I understand why it might be a source of family. Shame. I don't think it's a source of shame. I I don't think anybody feels ashamed of it, including Jeff. But it's certainly not something that, you know, we see the humor in the answer is no the answer. Simply not well, there are gonna be running around. And so, but the ones that are here the ones we know about don't find anything about what I'm doing right now. Funny. Well, I know this my parents myself and my brother do not, but maybe fifteen years or so like we'll sit down and watch that. And we'll be able to laugh about it. I I don't know. It's just it's been something that we've never those whole series those Miami New York series. We're not we're not as as great as the rivalries were and the competition and all of that during the time, it certainly not one that was was fun for for me. And I don't think even for Jeff and a lot of ways though, he kept coming out on top. So it was a little bit. More fun. You know, but it's just not something. We've never we've never really gone back and talked about those series. Like, we've talked about him in generalities about the intensity and the competitiveness of those series and the players involved in the great respect that Jeff and I had for players on both sides of it. But in terms of the games themselves. It's something we've never even gone back and talked about Pat Riley tells the story after one of those losses against the Knicks of Alonzo Mourning coming into his locker room still in uniform the team is just broken outside because they've lost again to the Knicks and telling him while he sobbing at his desk that pets OB at his desk Alonzo goes in and tells him go do your job go talk to your team. Yeah. I mean, I remember that too. It was it was the last time we went through it. It was you know, it was shot that Clarence after Clarence Weatherspoon missed the shot. I believe and we were. In we were in Miami. And so it was in our own locker room and we'd lost at home. And it was a difficult time. What was tough about all those is that we were. We were the higher seeded team all the time. And you know, it was close. I mean, those were great series. And it was a great rivalry. I think for a lot of reasons but a lot because the teams were so similar padded coach that team in New York and then came to Miami. And so if you look back on it and you compare it to today's game. I mean, it was just a basketball in a lot of ways. I mean, it was it was literally that you talk about grind it out games. I mean teams were just by eating and one of the great things. I remember as people have looked back on the series. And I don't know was it was quite a while ago now, but somebody asked Dan Marley about what he and Allan Houston had said to each other because Dan, always guarded Alan Houston in those series. And look we're playing them at that time a series, plus four games a year. And you know, you're playing them nine to eleven games a year, the whole thing and and sit never said one word to. In that entire time. And and that's that's what it was. I mean, there wasn't a lot of talking. I mean in there wasn't the Congeniality that there is a lot of times now between the teams and hugging and kissing and and all of that. I mean that that might have been I don't know if it was the last time, but it was certainly one of those teams fought. And I think they look back on it. I've talked to some of those guys over the years. They look back with great respect for the guys on the other side. But at the time, I mean, it was intense with Xoan Larry Johnson was a bit scary. Like, I don't know know with them. But like there was something bad happening between those do. No, no. There's no question. I mean, look those those teams I mean, it was I haven't been around anything like that since then. I mean, there's rivalries and and things like that. And there are. Some teams with with bad blood that there's that. But not with level of intensity on the court. And in fairness a lot of that is because the rules in the way, the games officiated has has evolved for the good for the good. I mean, a lot of us didn't like it at the time. But you look back at those games now. And you're like why did we let people play like that? Is it true is is it true that you guys were finding people if they if they help the opponent up it was in our book, you know, your your team guidelines that you gave the team it was in there. I in reality. I don't remember anybody ever getting fine. But I also don't remember anybody ever picked anybody up from the other team. So it's probably why they didn't get fine. I mean, it was a different world. The NBA was different at that time. It was different in the way the game was fishy. Aided the rules were different. And the atmosphere was different around games at that. Time. And I don't really know anybody who would dispute that. And it doesn't mean that the guys then are necessarily more competitive than the guys now. But there just wasn't the level of collegiality that that time that there is now, and they're certainly because the rules wasn't the level. There's not the level of physicality now. I mean now where you see greater physicality actually in the WNBA. I don't know why they go by the same rule book. But they let those women absolutely kill each other. But our guys at

"And if you have Alexa, or Google home, just say play WFAN, and you will be locked in to the fan and joining us right now, the preeminent preeminent guy when it comes to college basketball, the one and only Jon Rothstein is with us right now. John, how are you? Great good to be with you guys. Happy march. Happy more. This is March John likes to say. And you just came to you were just hanging out with G. Right, right. Didn't we hit at you? Just coming back from Philadelphia. That's right. I'm actually in the car right now, we just wrapped up a shoot CBS airing on CBS next weekend. Either March sixteenth or seventeenth south some time with the defending national champions before we get set. The crown another one in Minneapolis and a couple of weeks. Now, tell me this. I want Seton Hall to be in the NCW that would find a four as many. Without going. Anyway, I'm sorry. John. I'm so I throw that in. John Seton Hall to be a tournament team. I got two questions. Right. Are they resume wise a tournament team? And if the answer is yes, would they be tournament team with this resume and most other years Greg question? I mean, the big thing you have to remember is this the thing that puts teams in the NC double A tournament. Regardless of all, the metrics, you read and hear about is the ability to have quad one wins and wins that move the needle against other teams that are projected to be in the NC double A tournament seeing all after last night's win over Marquette has three big chips the play with a neutral site win over Kentucky who could be a number one eight a road win Maryland. And at in addition to that a home win last night over Marquette. Now, I understand your question. Because right now, Seton Hall is obviously a team that's still while they're in the bracket adds up today. Probably could use one more marquee win to cement and then. Tournament burst the bubble this year. Evan and Joe is a soft as I've seen in all my years of colored covering college basketball. But this is one big thing. And I wrote about this yesterday that people need to take no count over the next ten days from now in the election Sunday your conference record has no bearing on whether or not you make the NC double A tournament the NCAA tournament selection committee looked at your overall body of work that will determine if you play the NC double A tournament or not and the perfect example of that is Syracuse last year, the orange were eight and ten in the ACC. But while the making the Sweet Sixteen Saint John's how about them they're in right now. No matter what safely and then it goes back to this. I mean, despite very poor non conference schedule with actually got a little bit better. Because the US turned out the run through the Atlantic ten like a chainsaw through butter Saint John's maximize the opportunities it had in the. Big east conference this year by splitting Villanova and sweeping Marquette. There's not a lot of teams in the bracket who are on the bubble that could match the quality wins that they resume. So even though Saint John's probably a couple of games short where their panel level could be considering landscape of the big east. I mean, I think I don't think I speak for everybody. When this looks like a team tantalize that could win twelve or thirteen game the league, even though they fall in shorter that the Redstone barring something unforeseen should still be an EMC tournament. How about the way Seton Hall did win last night? You mentioned how that's an impressive victory on the resume their down by thirteen in this game. Marcus Howard did nothing. They completely shut them down and miles Powell could miss as they went on that eighteen overrun the close. How about the wasting hall got that victory yesterday against Marquette? And I don't want to talk about Seton Hall victory last night without mentioning the defensive performance by Quincy McKnight on market. Power holding Marcus our to single digits. That was an unbelievable defensive effort by Quincy McKnight who also just a one turnover. Look, Seton Hall long has had mild Powell and mild Powell island, and there still hasn't been a consistent secondary sport Powell. But the pirates find a way to get the victory that they need, you know, one of Kevin Willis best coaching jobs. How many teams in the big east make the tournament your mind? Whore. Unless we see a big Steeler emerged at the third of it. They down Seton Hall Villanova Marquette, Georgetown got destroyed last night. But they're not in right now. Not as of now, I would say Georgetown would have to beat Marquette it over the weekend in Milwaukee to be back into the mix. You were visiting with Jay, right? What's your overall impression on the year? Villanova's had because they struggled a little bit with some bad losses. Non-conference? They just had that game where they lost Xavier. They've had a kind of a weird season. What's your overall view on Villanova this year? You know, working progress? Evan, and that's one of the things that we we talked about, you know, this was a team that lost four guys to the NBA that was beaten soundly by Michigan at the start of the season. But with Marquette lost last night Villanova Clinton leads to share of the big east regular season title. So I think you know, J the understands that this isn't the Villanova team that we've seen in the past couple of years, but you still have one last go round for Eric Ascalon Phil booth, and they're a team that I think you should be able to win one game in the NCAA tournament. But getting back to the second weekend. I think would be something that every Villanova fan, including the coaching staff would relish and be thrilled with I think getting the second weekend is going to be extremely difficult. Let's see line and they on right now. Then if you had to guess, I would say the five six range make that's probably where where where they're at right now. I think you know, you look at Marquette Marquette was a team a couple of weeks ago that was looking like, it's content. Possibly for a two seat of a won the big east tournament. The golden eagles right now, you know, falling into the four or five range. They both a number of games in a row and again half the plate Georgetown this weekend. And then the plane the biggest whereas Syracuse you mentioned Syracuse. Where are they right now? In the eight nine range there in no doubt about it. Yeah. No doubt about it there. And I think, you know, one thing that's interesting guys. And you know, there's always works out the brackets come out. The selection committee is going to try and avoid reteach matchups in the NC double A tournament. So if they're accuses in eight nine they wouldn't likely be an eight nine in Virginia or dukes region because they were common opponent from the ACC. I would not be shocked if that's where Syracuse land in terms of seat if they're sent out west, which means you could have potential Gonzaga Syracuse game and around thirty two if the win their first game, right, right? Your view on Duke Wisden Williamson without Cy Williams because obviously this season we've seen a little bit of both with this injury suffered without Zion. Williamson I think it's going to be extremely difficult for Duke doing two games in the tournament. With dianne. Williamson Duke is clearly above every other team in college basketball. And I have always been an advocate and a proponent that. You needed to have veteran experience around dominant freshmen in college basketball chance to win in the NCAA tournament. It's what we saw Kentucky due in twenty twelve. It's what we saw Duke doing twenty fifteen. When it had guys like Quinn, cook a meal Jefferson and that Jones, but this Duke freshman class. It's completely Trump that notion because they don't have a dominant veteran around them, and I talked to Mike shefty about this at one point the season. He told me that this freshman class for Duke undertake more responsibility than any other freshman class. He has had since he's been the head coach in Durham because of that very reason. This is one thing we all need to keep in mind when we're thinking about seething over the next couple of weeks John team with us. Of course, if CBS sports talking college basketball, nobody does it nobody does it better than John. How good is Tennessee? John. Eighteen plays exceptionally well together, Joe a team that obviously only takes the highest percentage shot Hennessy in a lot of ways is a throwback to what college basketball used to be used to try and get guys together who could be together for three or four years and develop and be an outstanding team that could blossom as juniors and seniors. That's what this Tennessee team is they've got obviously the SEC writing player of the year in grant Williams, a player who's almost like a young Clarence Weatherspoon around the basket size, but effective can carve out space, and you now have with the emergence of LSU retains out of the SEC LSU, Tennessee. And of course, Kentucky that are going to be trendy final four picks on selection. They I actually think the team right now that is playing the best basketball in the SEC is LSU. I mean, they've got a dominant point guard trae mon- waters who the me every time. I watch play reminds me a little bit more and more of a young Shabazz Napier. And they've got. Four point core players that can trade blows with any frontcourt America nods. Read cabal Biggby Williams Darius days in Emmett Williams, who is insatiable last night against Florida with a double double thirteen points, working rebounds. Doing what I love when you do the comparisons. I do like that. All right because it kind of describes guys I haven't seen a lot of in a better way all seriousness because you talk about guys I've seen a lot more of. So gimme the comparison game first off with John Williamson because he's been kind of a debated guy on terms of what he is going to be at the next level right now when you look and remind you of anybody. I mean, he's not like this guy because he's so different. But I would say if you were gonna take Anthony Mason from the Knicks and put him on steroids. One of my all time favorite play, the lady, Anthony Mason. Yeah. May he rest in peace? Anthony, Mason on steroids. On steroids. I mean. He was a pretty pretty big, dude. Anyway. Yeah. No. But I'm saying is you're getting an augmentation version of that type of player with probably Larry Johnson before back surgery. Right lettuce is a guy. You know? Here's the thing that I think people aren't really comes to. On both sides of the floor. How many times have you watch basketball? And you guys have watched all your life were a player was regularly making seven out of every ten shop. That's true. He does anything efficiency for this guy in the morning. He does defensively that's worth MRs I on at the front of the rim. And. Are you hearing because right now he still out with this knee, which was the most bizarre injured you'll ever see with the sneaker breaking and all that seconds into this North Carolina game the world was watching are you getting an idea when he's going to be back is he could have missed the ACC tournament. Is he gonna be ready for the NC double A's? What are you hearing about his status right now? Look Mike suggests he said after the game the other night that he doesn't expect I to play on Saturday against North Carolina. But he should be able to play during the ACC tournament these injuries. I've talked to doctors about this last month because read Travis at the same injury for Kentucky. It's generally about a two week injury. Now, Mike that in some cases be seventeen days in Sundays eleven days shore. But you know, I would be surprised if both re Travis Zion Williamson Warren playing in their respective conference starting next week. I give me a team that you see as a sweeper team for the final four that. Nobody's talking about is a final four team that you could see making. That run outstanding question gel final four team that nobody's talking about. And we're thinking obviously out of a power conference. I gave you LSU. That's not really a sleeper team. Right, florida. State Florida's is it is a team. If you remember last year went to the elite eight has had seven players play the other night again. Thank you say who are part of that run..

"For seven on vacation, eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six is the phone number, and we're still about a month or so away from the NCAA tournament. But I think it's time to talk a little college basketball with the incomparable the man who really learning college basketball season guy, never sleeps. He never does does anything, but watch basketball, and that's John roots deny John Joey. Great to be with you. All right. Well, we're going to start with this before we get into the season. You're not gonna ask you this Williamson Barrett. Are these guys if by some miracle the next game Knicks get the first the second pick in a draft. Are these guys in your mind? No doubt about it. NBA stars. Yes. Or no. Zion. Williamson should be the number one overall pick in the two thousand nineteen NBA draft seven days a week on twice on Sunday. Okay. No second option. I think it's going to be as clear cut number one choice as you're going to see and look as you know, I don't follow the NBA basis. BP being friends with you. I've understood the pain you've went through since nineteen Seventy-three. So if you're a knick fan right now, you have to look at this as a real black and white situation you're either getting Zion. Williamson your franchise is never going to be the same from a perspective from a marketing perspective or you're playing second fiddle. The team that gets Williamson how about the other guy Barrett. What do you think, you know? Joe it's interesting because RJ Barrett to me is the least talked about top to pick in first team all American that I've ever covered in college basketball, and the large reason for that is because he plays on the same team is I on Williamson RJ Barrett. They high level score. But he has a volume guy. He is also not the phenomenon Zion. Williams's Williamson is from a physical perspective. Williamson's feet are the feet of tailbacks. But he's built like a defensive end. And I think one thing you need to look at. That's really interesting when you look at the. Efficiency that Zion. Williamson plays with versus RJ Barrett right now going into tomorrow's game against Virginia. RJ Barrett has attempted a hundred and thirty six more shot this house then Zion. Williamson and Joe he only averages appoint more game. Wow. I didn't realize that. That's that's that's very interesting. No doubt about it. The other guys the Murray state point guard what about him? John Moran is a freak physically. He's an unbelievable distributor is everything. You, of course, the double figures are in double figures in assists. He's going to be a top five pick. But you also need to look, obviously, as you know, what you're going to need if you're stockpiling assets, you would think about taking a secondary point guard. But you know, if the Knicks if I'm if memory serves correctly just acquired Dennis Smith. I think you'd be replicating some of the same things if you went to right? If you're the Knicks fan right now, I know, you know, you're serving your audience, right? Not talking about the draft a little bit. The thing you need to keep in mind. Is this myth is a draft that is comparable to drafts that having number one pick surrounding you know, the spot where there's really everything else after that. I picked because of what's going to happen to your franchise with the bus situation with the name with the body with the F. He's a Bill how about him? I mean, look what LeBron comes in the league. He's a no brainer. Coby Bryan came in the league. It was a no brainer right away. They were very good. I mean is this guy going to be like that and your mind? I think you're looking at somebody right now with the way basketball is going with position with basketball that has a chance with his athleticism just to be a match up nightmare, and you know gel. I mean, how many players, you know? Do you see able to make approximately seven out of every ten shot? They take from the floor, which is unheard of for somebody who is in somebody like a shocker a five-man and is also capable of impacting the game defensively by protecting the front of the rim and getting out in passing lanes. He's averaging over two steals a game over to block the game. So it's not just the fact that he looks like, you know, a tight end, but he has Fred like feet like Fred Astaire. He's also capable of impacting the game on the other side of the floor at seventeen rebounds in his last game. Yeah. I mean, I don't want to paint the bleak picture for my friend. Now, the Knicks fan the jets fan, but the draft lottery, I believe it's may fourteenth is I think going to be comparable. The nineteen eighty five in terms of what the steak well interesting, Jon Rothstein, of course, talking college basketball with him. All right. Let's let's talk about. Got the big game Virginia coming up this weekend. Clearly, the number one team in the country in your mind. The best team in the country right now on your mind. Duke has the highest ceiling in college basketball because of the star power that makes the shefty possesses on this team. Now, I just talked about how they Barrett is the least talked about first team all American top to pick that I've ever covered can reddish another player. Ryan shooter of the three players is five and you and I've been talking for five minutes, and we haven't even brought him out that is type of star power that do cats, and we haven't even talked about trade Jones who if Duke was a snake. He would be the head. He is not the best pro prospect on do, but he is the most important player on do a much better defender than his brother ties was when do won a national championship and thousand fifteen but gel. Here's the thing you need to remember about this team. And I talked to Mike just chef ski about this this season. This to freshman class Jones reddish Barrett. Williamson has more responsibility than any other freshman class. That's just chef gave ever coached for this reason when do one a national championship four years ago in two thousand fifteen people pointed and for good reason as their freshman being the real reasons why they won the national championship because they had highest Jones Jalil oak afford, right? Grayson Allen that do team though, Joe had Quinn cook that Duke team had Matt Jones who led them in scoring in an elite eight win against Gonzaga. And that team had a meal Jefferson who was huge as a veteran guarding. Frank Kaminsky in the national championship game guarding Jaka Pertile of youth on this week sixteen and also guarding Shanna Karnowski plug-ins aga- in the elite eight so this do team does not have that type of veteran influence interesting. Again to Jon Rothstein. Let's talk about the local teams here a little bit. We'll start with Saint John's sweaty. I got whacked by Duke last weekend. But they had a nice win at Creighton in an add a tremendous win against Moore candidate who they've actually beaten twice now. Where are they what they have to do to get into the tournament? I think because of the situation now with what you know, obviously moves the needle in terms of the NC double A tournament. It comes down to quad one wins. Which means did you play where did you where did you play and win the game? And Saint John's right now has a sweep over a Marquette team that was in the top ten of last week, they people and that's going to carry a lot of weight on selection Sunday. I was very critical about Saint John's is non conference schedule. And I know that they've been a little bit mercurial they've been up and down throughout the season. But I said this last summer and not wavering. From this statement, Saint John has the most talented roster in the big east, and when they're playing at the level. That they played at the other night when they went some walkie and one without Marvin Clark scoring a point. They're not just the team that can make the NCAA tournament therapy that can advance in the NCA tournament. So you think they'll begin when all is said and done. Yes, I think it would take right now on February the a a a significant collapse for Saint Johnson this the NC double A tournament. And they've got to maximize the next three games because they're all at home providence tomorrow, noon eastern, CBS sports network Butler next week. And then the big one against Villanova week from Sunday at the garden. Right. Let's talk about doing otherwise you bring them out because you know. I mean, Jay, right? What he's doing with that? And they got stay off to a little rough start. It's showing you clearly the best team in the big east again. And they're going to probably be a force to be reckoned with you know, what about Nova right now. I think he can make the case pound for pound. That Jay writes doing a better coaching job this season than he did when he led Villanova to the last three national champion. You know? And this is the one thing that people need to understand the two players who are anchoring. It's run Phil booth and Eric Pascall Joe they were answer. Larry parts on these national championship teams that go booth had a great game in two thousand sixteen against North Carolina national title game. But he already has more twenty points scoring games this season he had his whole career prior. So this is on chartered territory for booth and Pasco, but I will say this the big east this year thing -nificant down as a conference versus the last couple of years. And I think that's obviously help Villanova get off to start. So culture right now is you surfing talent at Villanova. If you wanna say the whole is greater than the sum of us are definitely accurate with this team. But it's obviously a credit to a guy. Jay, right. That is a virtual lock for the hall of fame. I think's gonna happen sooner rather than later. God. There's no question about it right now. How 'bout Seton Hall now where they're at? Seton Hall is like a lot of the teams in the big east like Saint John's light teams like Georgetown teams fighting to get separation in the bubble picture. But this is worth seeing hall, in my opinion as a massive edge over teams that are in the bubble picture. Kevin Willard went out after losing four starters and schedule exceptionally aggressively in the non conference portion of the schedule right, obviously that yeah. I mean that obviously puts you in a situation where you could lose more games in November and December. But it also gives you more opportunities. They have a win on a neutral court on their resume over Kentucky who could wind up being frightened. Joe? They also want a game at Maryland with probably going to be a four or five or sixty those are two big chips to play for Seton Hall, if they can get the nine big east wins. I think they'll make the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year. How about Tennessee? How good is Tennessee? Tennessee's a team. That is really a throwback to what college basketball used to debate. You used to see players stay in college developed over three or four year. I go on big runs when they were junior and senior Tennessee to me is the most unselfish team in college basketball. Joe they assist on two out of every three of their Mayfield goals grant Williams somebody right now who's going to be a first team. All American might be the one player. Okay. That isn't getting enough attention nationally because he doesn't come in with the cachet of a Williamson of a Barrett of somebody of that ilk. But he's somebody who looks like kind of modern day Clarence Weatherspoon under Cy knows how to use space in the low post. They've got to potential players at the next level in him, and Admiral Scofield, they're a throwback team a team good enough in my opinion to get Minneapolis and win the national championship as of right now. They're on the one line. Wow. Wow. How about how about Rutgers? Well, talking about the local teams at a nice little run. They won like three games in a row in a big ten, obviously Rutgers basketball is a lot better than football. But that's you know, that's not saying well what about Rutgers right now with Iraq..

"For the Super Bowl. They hung out hit my sweet. And that was it from that. We was cool. But, but I, you know, the repair the repair of any beef is when the other party have both parties have respect for each other. You can't repair nothing. If one party is often other party, they'll have any respect for for for the other person. Can you take me through the details that you remember of getting the lyrics to the supreme court like just all of the stuff that you? Remember, the specifics of your taking these lyrics, and you don't know that it's going to be a fight for America. You in fact, you didn't want to be the political activists you were all about selling sex and funny. Yup. And next thing, you know, you're headed to the supreme court with a smile on your face and abandoned on your head like take us through the details of all of that. Because it had to be exhilarating. It had to be unlike anything you've known before since. Yeah. A lot of people don't know. It was you know, I two cases one case would jail in Broward County, and they took a record onto shelf, and they say they deemed the album obscene. So I ended up have to go to a quarter of appeals. And I got a case overturn if I didn't go if I didn't get that case overturned, then that would have been president, and they could just ban any record right now Lil Wayne Drake regularly record explicit lyrics. So I got that overturn. But then at the same time I had another. The cage running at same time. Which is with ROY orbison Pretty Woman whether it has parody and whether or not parodies takes about first amendment. So that case was running. You know, I'm I'm in court. I'm thinking that's just a regular sample case. But it wasn't really paying a lot of lawyers, and you're and you're paying lawyers, but the money's coming in as well. You're not worried about the amount of money that you're paying for lawyers know at a time because because I was it was a good and bad situation. The good part of it. I was nationally known. Everybody was buying record everything that people want him use it. They were talking about you, exactly. And they will buy records, and they would buy records, and you don't enforce when tour, and I I wanted to tour because there were no building wouldn't touch. But all the news stories every you are on every television with the news talking about this. And that is bringing in money. No, you can't pay for that. Like, you take us through what's happening with these low. Lawyers. And how scared you are how you're feeling during this. So my lawyer told me at the time he was I look you in a win win situation with this because you're going to be a household name for the rest of your life. You say oh maser records. Go always be known as the guy for free speech. So it was I it. Though, the idea of booty music specifically being the guy like to be an American patriot on behalf of free speech. When all you wanted was money. All I wanted was the case give me the case I want to have a good time party rocket road. Just give me. We have freedom fighter. That's what you became an American freedom fighter. Every politician yelling about how scandalous being sexual exactly him the guy. I listen, man. I was I was enjoying being Iraq and roller. You know, I'm just I'm joined sessions with the three and four girls in the bedroom. And all that I'm having a good time. But then one day wakes up in is okay. You gotta find free speech. So as that one case was going, the ROY orbison case, it went to one quarter of appeals court of appeals before you knew my lawyer was like, hey, look, this is going to you know, the fourth diff- fourth district court of appeals. We gotta go to Atlanta. I'm like what the hell's the fault? This caught appeals. You know, I became a lawyer real fan I can fast. And then I'm sitting up in Atlanta. And it was like, okay. Well, they then, you know, I won the case in their appeal to again, they wanna case there. And there was like, okay. Now this thing is going to spring. What I'm like supreme? Is that what we going? And and it was you know, before you know, what I went into supreme court and just go get killed. I know I'm gonna lose because at the time Clarence what is name. I wanted Thomas. I yeah. Clarence Thomas was the was the I wouldn't say Clarence Weatherspoon. What I was gonna say Clarence. I wanted to say, and so he said nothing there. He just went through his list, actually escapade. So we're gonna lose him. He's
