"And all this promise is smoke and mirrors. I'm cushion avidar, filling in for Cairo. Tune into the United States of anxiety live tonight at 6 on WNYC. And you're listening to all things considered on WNYC. Thanks for joining me this afternoon. I'm Tiffany Hansen. It was a historic afternoon at Citi Field yesterday as the New York mets retired number 17. The number was worn by longtime Metz first baseman Keith Hernandez, who was a 5 time all star and an 11 time gold glove winner on New York won Hernandez acknowledged the historic nature of the gesture. We're 60 years of history here now and there's only 5 people up there and I'll be the 6th. So that's pretty special. And that's something I'm really, really proud of. Prior to the game against the Miami Marlins Hernandez throughout the first pitch from first base, he's been a color commentator for the mets since 2006. The mets ended the day yesterday with a dramatic extra innings victory winning 5 four in the tenth today, however, they lost to Miami two zero. Coming up in the next 15 minutes on all things considered a new Supreme Court case could radically change congressional and presidential elections by giving broad, largely unchecked power to state legislators in deciding how those elections are run. And my conversation with WNYC is a ruined Venezuelan about the settlement between the Justice Department and 6 men detained in the wake of the 9 11 attacks. That's coming up on all things

Victoria's Secret Is Now in the Business of Shifting Culture

"But I want to talk about an article. This is by Chris ruffo and Citi journal. It's called social justice lingerie. And the article is just downright funny. It's not intended to be funny, ruthless, not exactly like a laugh, a minute guy, but what he's describing is how a Victoria's Secret. They came under fire from all these left wing activists. They came under fire for no other reason that their basic business model was beauty, right? This is the idea of saying to women if you want to look beautiful if you want to look like a model, these are the clothes you should wear. And of course, to some degree, it's an illusion as all advertising is to some degree an illusion, but nevertheless, the activists were up in arms and they started raging about the fact that Victoria's Secret was transphobic and didn't care enough about the environment. It was doing deforestation and so on. Well, what's happened is Victoria's Secret has sort of completely surrendered, and what that means is they've sort of, first of all, they booted out all their old kind of famous models, people like Heidi Klum and Gisele Bündchen and Tyra Banks, all these people are like out they're gone. They don't represent true social anymore. In fact, they represent an actual social. They don't represent Victoria's Secret anymore. In fact, they represent they probably should represent true social. It'll probably be great for true social. Tyra Banks join truth social. That's where I hang out these days. Gisele Bündchen. Find me on truth social. You might get more than you bargained for. No. Anyway, the point here is that Victoria's Secret has decided to go with a new coterie of models. People like Megan Rapinoe, LGBTQ activist, people like transgender transgender swimsuit model Valentina sampaio. Or Amanda de cadenet. So Amanda, the academy says the point of Victoria's Secret is no longer to sell underwear. It is to quote shift culture.

"The Mets are playing a game that I believe was postponed yesterday. They're finishing the game today. Javi did not start in the game, so he's be. He was pinch hitting. This is at Citi Field. He comes up to bat and every man, woman and child in there has the thumbs down and booing. If you want to write a funny video, that's awesome. People even brought like the thumbs down Emoji like a big cardboard cut out of it. Yeah, so they could give the thumbs down to boo Javi bias. And then he got hit by a pitch if he if he steals, second and scores on a single and he crosses home plate. I hope he stands up and gives everyone the thumbs down. I think that would be hilarious. You boo me Pull you back. Yep. So one thing happy family that is the latest with Javi Baez here on ESPN chair. Here we go Soak in those beers. It's not that loud. "Now to be clear about this study only twenty. Three asset managers were surveyed so a relatively small sample size but those managers oversee sixty six and a half billion dollars in assets so it certainly not small if you're looking in terms of assets under management of these twenty-three managers nine said they'd become more confident about how digital assets work and nine says at the regulatory environment was improving in terms of concerns sixteen still cited market structure issues of liquidity and lack of transparency so summing up a very small sample size but much in line with the deloitte survey we discussed yesterday which had for its part a much larger sample size of twelve hundred eighty managers going to institutional news on the other side of the pond an inside source within us banking leviathan city. Group said that the firm is set to begin trading bitcoin futures on the chicago mercantile exchange aka the once they get regulatory approval. Apparently they're seeing a huge surgeon client demand for bitcoin alongside the assets. Return towards fifty thousand dollars. City is also reportedly hiring aggressively in london. For a crypto focused team and this all squares with the may twenty twenty one report from the financial times saying that city group was considering jumping into crypto trading and or custody so the story from the institutional side is pretty clear but what about regular people. How are they feeling about this. Big old crypto industry of ours well while fund managers in the uk might be excited about crypto assets. British citizens have some concerns about government backed digital assets. Political ran a survey of twenty five hundred. Uk adults about their attitudes around central bank digital currency less than a quarter only twenty four percent said they believed the cdc would be a net positive for society. Compare that with a total of thirty percent who thought it would bring more harm than good to the uk. These twenty five hundred citizens had many concerns. Seventy three percent were concerned with cyber attacks. Hackers undermining a cbc seventy percent. Were concerned with the loss of privacy. Sixty six percent. We're concerned with increasing government. Power in forty five percent raised environmental concerns. Which shows how people don't really understand. How a cdc might work as most cbc designers aren't really looking at a bitcoin style proof of work in fact the bank of england said this summer that a cd could help bring the british economy to net zero carbon clearly if the bank of england wants to get their citizens on board. They've got a lot more work to do. What are the most important developments in this space. Is that community banks. Regional banks and credit unions can now start offering bitcoin to their customers. That's right checking saving and now bitcoin. It's all happening. Seamlessly thanks to a platform by that offers institutional grade custody appliance. They're also the sponsor of the breakdown and if you want to find out more go to ninety dot com slash ten l. w. n. y. g. dot com forward slash and l. w. Let's jump to another part of the former british empire to look at crypto adoption in india. -til dr the number of young investors getting involved in stocks and crypto in india is way up especially outside of the biggest cities overall. According to data from the bbc stock exchanges shared by the economic times new user registration for crypto and stockbrokerage platforms is up forty five percent seventy million total users. According to one brokerage sign ups from the top thirty nine metro cities grew about thirty percent faster than their metro counterparts. Another brokerage registered sixty percent of new users sign ups from what they called tier two and tier three towns compared to thirty percent. Eight months ago crypto platform coin switch coober reported one hundred and thirty five percent month over month growth in non metro city sign ups and coin which is now a crypto unicorn. South forty eight point. Seven x growth in user sign ups from those tier two and tier three cities over the last six months. One twenty five year old fulltime pharmaceutical consultant. Put the motivation. This way a single source of income is not enough. If you want to be rich you should have a passive income. That is more than you're active income which can take care of your expenses. This is the freedom provided by investing and trading another twenty two year old put it in the context of the pandemic following the kobe nineteen pandemic. Everything has become chaotic outside. And it's not easy to get a job. I'm not okay with working eight hours a day under someone else. I'd rather be financially independent based on my learnings and my skills. what's clear. is that the role of the pandemic is pretty undeniable here. A ton of these folks especially in these tier two and tier. Three cities lost their jobs. But there's also the larger macro context where fiat currencies devalued because of government intervention meaning that assets that are denominated in those fiat currencies are up in fiat terms that makes these strategies look like really good bets over the past year the cynical or pessimistic. Take on this is head. It's just not a sustainable approach for a country of one point three three billion people's youth to look to stocks and crypto trading as their careers. The less cynical take is that. It's hard to be mad about. People getting their first glimpse of financial empowerment and freedom and wanting to learn more to participate in the economy on a deeper level. Okay banal. Let's keep up this theme of adoption and look over to nf. Tease and defy as was pretty predictable. Yesterday's announcement that visa had purchased a crypto punk set off an absolute frenzy sales volumes. Yesterday hit eighty six million dollars which is a daily record. According to crypto slam in august as a whole volume has already reached three hundred and thirty two million. The previous peak was july with around one hundred and thirty five million. The average price for a punk. This month is just under two hundred k. Which is double last month but one interesting question is how much of this normies versus. Just people flexing one of the really wacky quirks of teas especially when it comes to these art projects is that one could have a completely and i mean completely cynical view about their value and still come away thinking that they're likely to keep being valued. I've seen more than a few people on crypto twitter. And not just. Bitcoin is basically argue that punks and apes etc are effectively just a new status. Symbol for the crypto rich their way to flex how much you've made in crypto. That's obviously a very different narrative to the idea of them being these culture projects that bridge technology and art etc but even if one takes that view there are a ton of people who have made a ton of money in crypto who seem to love this particular flex that alone can move markets a lot higher than one might think and still sustained some pretty nutty price floors. Even if attention around them dies down either way while they're certainly increasing mainstream interest in entities defy they're also indicators that are remains a pretty internal crypto thing. Chain analysis released a report today. They called the global defy adoption index. And here's the -til yar. The rise in defy quote has primarily been powered by experienced crypto currency traders and investors looking for new sources of alpha in innovative new platforms. Even when we wait are index to favor grassroots adoption so this chain analysis study used three metrics to rank one hundred fifty four countries on chain crypto volume received by defy platforms total retail value. Which is the value of transactions under ten k. An individual deposits to defy platforms on chain volumes adjusted by purchasing power parity per capita perhaps unsurprisingly. These stats show that. Growth and defy was driven largely by north american western europe. Now this is a pretty broad brush to paint with. And i'm not sure that national adoption is the real metric that matters here in terms of understanding. How much of defies being driven by for scripted. Wales but i still think that the report by analysis reinforces the broad sense that i've shared before that serious technological barriers to entry have kept defy relatively self contained to the crypto space. Which is i will continue to argue. I think remains healthy now. Just a few more topics here before we wrap. And let's talk some bitcoin. Michael sailor is backup to his old tricks. Micro strategy is purchased another one hundred and seventy seven million dollars worth of bitcoin. Thirty nine hundred. Seven bitcoin's to be exact for an average of forty five thousand two hundred ninety four dollars per bitcoin that means the total. The company now holds one hundred and eight thousand nine hundred ninety two bitcoin that were acquired for an average price of twenty six thousand seven hundred sixty nine per bitcoin. Dear news however was blocked streams two hundred ten million dollar series b. round which valued the firm at three point. Two billion dollars. The raise was led by a uk investment firm plus the parent company of bit phoenix. And tether the money is intended to allow block shrimp to push into an expansion manufacturing bitcoin mining chips. One last little. Bitcoin one is well sub stack the newsletter platform that has attracted attention over the last year for enabling high profile. Defections from vaunted publishers. Like the new york times in rolling stone has started integrating bitcoin as a payments option. The initiative is enabled by open note and currently includes just a handful of crypto focus. Publications like folks from willie woo and dan held. But the goal is to continue to expand said sub stack or excited to introduce this option even at a small scale to start to coin. Payments are fast convenient and secure with low fees. We use the lightning network for transactions which are even faster than credit cards. So take all of this together. From institutional adoption to sub stack enabling bitcoin payments and focusing on lightning two people talking about visa and punks in the short takeaway is that there is a whole lot of mainstreaming happening. It's not happening evenly or in the same ways at the same time but it's happening surely every day and just like that every day. I appreciate you hanging out and until tomorrow be safe and take care of each other piece..

"The injury hits. Just keep on coming for the mets noah. Syndergaard has been shut down for at least six weeks. The quote from luis rojas manager the sits big counting on being a month from now. This happening is tough. We pray he can pitch for us this year. I'm going to be talking with carl. Why i kinda wonder if that's even a possibility. And i'll explain why this is going to get really really complicated for all involved now. The mets have been ravaged by all these injuries lately but they had a great day on thursday. This was in game one first-pitch peraza to high drive deep to left top back near the wall. That bom jose peraza gets the mets won on their road. Maybe five today. A park homer off herrmann. Mark has and the mets take one. Nothing lead that from wcbs and one. Ron was all that marcus. Stroman and edwin d as needed strowman was outstanding. Played his position. Fips advancing the way the world pays banks and invest welcome back. I'm joined today by mini. Markle head of us network work could city. We have been discussing the branch liberty strategies city in the future branch banking delivery and how to support growth with new delivery models so do a bit of a pivot here midday so part. The retail banking strategy at city is the partnership with google for the google at the city. Plex account long tina envelope as year according to city city plus account as a digital Count bill to make managing money simpler smarter and more rewarding this financial mobile functionality. Being according to design. How do you foresee this new initiatives integrating your brand strategy. So we're really excited about our partnership with google Our collaboration with google will really ball digital banking which as i mentioned digital lead strategy is really core to our approach to serving our clients it will also empower consumers with a simple convenient in personal banking experience It's really excited for exciting for us to bring together the best of digital banking and google's user experience expertise opt we all we all know about that as users of google partnerships like this Like ours with google offer customers the best of both worlds a terrific digital experience on a platform they're comfortable with and capabilities backed by the trust and expertise of a firm lake city. And it's just another way that will extend our reach on so we're we couldn't be more excited about the partnership with google. So you see. City is being uniquely position to basically balance a household name. A strong ran with the ability to provide both digital in fiscal ranch support. Awards is the best combo scale efficiency. I looked to city. Most other partners that have signed on with google are relatively smaller is trying to build a bigger distribution ever while you're obviously by far the largest in scale from the standpoint of of partnerships with google but on the other hand your light brains network mostly in big cities really makes us the ardennes situation where you're going to basically work against yourself alive. The bigger banks billion digital strategy. Can almost you know. Eat away at the core of the branch leverage but neither cases expansion models. Yeah i mean this is exactly what we're doing and we're really excited about it We feel really great about our branch footprint and our strategy of for our branches is that it's well positioned for the future of banking but we also couldn't be more excited about the capabilities using partnerships to provide clients with a world class digital experience and in the end our strategy is a digital digital lead strategy with a physical footprint that brings the human experience to clients both in a branch in through digital tools. Like video or google plex. Was i look at your. It back my mind. The discussion on the video side and really it gives you a heads up because it it or hand up in that you know when something like alexa my that you have the ability right now to build across multiple channels way the consumer watched me serve. But but it's interesting that you're not in the situation really working against the branch network who you're building the digital footprint and vice versa. It works it works for each other and again you don't need one hundred of the strong a household name said he is well known across all universities both the united states in overseas. So we don't talk much about this within the normal distribution strategy. That city has a nationwide network over sixty thousand fee free. Atm's on with allows you to go beyond simply this. The city limits of a familiar breath numbers given the move to digital reduce reliance on cash and the offer the city plus account what role you think eighteen for play your overall strategy yeah so. Atm's will continue to be part of our overall strategy on people still want a need cash. It's still an important part of the economy in our clients. Day to day. Lives and idioms have been the standard for many years. Now since since the late seventies as the way that we provide twenty four by seven access to cash in a while there's been a drop in activity during the pandemic. we are seeing clients fraternity. Atm's communities open up. In fact our march atm withdrawals were basically exactly the same as as a year ago. March of twenty twenty. And so you know. There's still quite a bit of iron happenings through. Atm's as people turn to cash as a as a source of payments. But what's really unique about what we offer here at city is that we're leveraging. Atm network to expand our region access. Point for clients so city. Customers have access to one of the largest fee free networks. Atm's really over seventy thousand across the us through partnerships with cartwright onyx all point and money passed so all across the country. People can access cash at those city. Branded and non branded. Atm's at familiar places like costco and see the as dwayne reed target most walgreens and it's really super easy. We've made it really easy through the mobile app so in seconds a client can locate the nearest fee free. Atm and what we found is that across the us city customers are merely minutes away from a fee free atm. And i'll use an example. We had a client in chicago. Who moved to nashville during the pandemic and he was meeting with his banker before removed and the banker demonstrated how to use the city locator on the mobile app and they found over fifty fee free. Atm's within ten miles of the clients new home and this excited the client right because he could now keep his relationship with city he could use the atm forecasted digital capabilities who are all of his transactional activity and connect with his banker in chicago via phone in video so it it's really a wonderful solution to continue to extend our reach across the us the Crowd traditional in fintech players having counted the differentiation. We start to all look somewhat like with real differentiation. Many times coming with the fintech players that are hitting specific segments in the marketplaces opposed posted a broader area. So this is kind of a a A little bit of crucial possibly but what is. The city's differentiation in the marketplace has just overwhelmed with providers associated has been serving the financial needs of clients for over two hundred years and banks are are places people trust and there's a sense of comfort that people have knowing on that city. They're protecting their money. We also offer the full breadth of financial services in one place on that supports a client throughout their life on we have an integrated relationship oriented approach to helping clients. We don't just focus on one thing like investing or lending or payments and we get the opportunity to partner with some amazing accompanies to enhance what we do for example our partnerships with american airlines have enriched our clients value. We partnered with amazon to enable clients to pay with points. These are just examples of how we city are able to leverage the power of our relationship banking model to bring more to our clients and we also understand the regulatory environment and have the inch infrastructure to support it and then finally banks like city are part of the fabric of the communities where we operate we bring access to financial services to communities. We provide financial education. We have a commitment to the communities where we operate we help people in their first bank account begin savings by their first home or save for retirement. And this i think was most evident in the last year during the pandemic many clients in communities were struggling and city. Was there to help them. Small businesses suffered on and we help them get access to ppp loans. People were furloughed or faced Kobe themselves or their families and we were there to help them off figure out how to manage their finances during the time of uncertainty in city. Really cares about our clients and especially in the toughest of times so finally as you before to what you're doing the next three to five years you lord knows after last. We can't predict anything. What you see personally is the biggest challenge that you face. Managing abramovich seven hundred branches several thousand employees. An honestly. you manage the customer relationship. So what is he is the biggest challenge that you have that any funny institution hasn't necessarily five years. Well of course the look media challenges to continue to lead our clients in our colleagues through the pandemic in the recovery that goes without saying. It's not quite over yet. And i feel an incredible responsibility to make sure that we protect our colleagues in the branches and that were there to help our clients on as the economy recovers but beyond that. I don't really look at this as a challenge. I think it's an incredible opportunity. That city has that's to continue to innovate and be at the cutting edge. In building seamless and easy digital capabilities on that complement the human experience to want from their bank and and for us building an ecosystem of access points that integrates the ease of digital with the advice and guidance of expert bankers will enable us to provide the absolute best experience for our customers. Mindy fakey from beyond the Pleasure all digitally. i remember l. caches. Gotta be several years ago. Now when city decided redo the complete extremes in and get rid of layers upon layers layers of lazy tasted bankers. One thing would do really well is do things additive like. We never take things way. We just add more and more or which makes the experience so much more difficult for the consumer and it is very interesting watson you from my perspective it is somewhat the best of both worlds rehab the ability to take the digital streets in simplify. Really know that it's got to be one of the best. 'cause you don't need the branch network of of larger competitors at the same you don't have the legacy is going to make it so that it's gonna be difficult career not going to be in a beaten up each other. Both sides of the bank is seen as a whole. And i think I really appreciate your time today. An pre-state be unchecked. Thank you so much for having me. I really appreciate it. What a great conversation. Mccollum from citibank. It's interesting because you know. I started the branch system myself and the branches of changed tremendously and cities. One of the organizations. I will choose a leader not maybe from the size of ranch network but the way if you the customer relationship as he said they're pretty much only in the big city but they still serve the entire universe from the standpoint of their credit card relations with the else and the dynamics of fiscal plus digital roy comes out the conversation. "Is something that is now widespread throughout our footprint were also adding more bankers because advice and guidance has become more dominant in terms of what clients want and so were responding to that with more bankers both in the branch and remotely That are there for our clients So it really has been a shift in how we think about the roles and adapting them to meet the needs of our customers and enter create a better experience for them so one of the obvious impacted. The pandemic was a complete shut off pretty much shut off of branch visits and from the standpoint of as you mentioned early in the podcast. The customers weren't high used digital capabilities. New found out how to do. The mobile deposit found out the atm baby. Fli never had. They never abated positive. Atm for cash. So we we saw tremendous drop in the number of transactions have branches to what presented. You think they'll come back or have they come back. I know you're taking a guest is. Nobody has a answer. But he's seen them come back around significant drop off number of actual visits to the ranch. Yes so that's a great question right and we certainly saw a significant drop off in interactions in the branch right. At the beginning of the pandemic there was a lot uncertainty in fear and significant lockdowns across communities across the united states in the lowest of volume of transactions that we had our visits to. The branch occurred in april of last year. And then you know as as clients sorta got more comfortable with the environment and we put protections in place We did see people begin to return to the branch and the protections that we put in place for really important in As we face the pandemic our number one priority was the health and safety of both our city colleagues and our customers and so everything from alexi screens hand sanitizer stations to mandatory of facial coverings. And even we were able to offer our employees free rapid at home kobe. Testing and onc- employees were sick. Felt safe in the environment. They also were able to convey that to customers and we started to see customers return into the bank branch so transaction volumes have come back. They're not all the way back to pre covid levels but what's been interesting is branch level. Sales have returned to pre pandemic levels and woods even more noteworthy of that is that you know. Our digital accounts became even more prominent as we face. The pandemic and people turned to digital a as a tool to open accounts and our digital accounts now represent half of all the accounts. We opened a branch. Sales are back to pre pandemic levels digital account opening has increased so digital is really become an additive growth factor for city and support our digital lead strategy. So we're seeing a mix of things that are happening. We also client patterns have shifted as well right as people have been in a work at home environment. We also have been using dated understand how our clients are interacting with us and obviously we see people were interacting with us at at high clips in suburban locations unless oh in some of the locations. It's still to be determined what the long haul is going to be because companies are still thinking about the return to work strategy. Everything from you can work permanently at home to hybrids to a come on back into the office so we will use data incline insights to monitor that over over time and respond. Accordingly based on how our clients behave. She talked about the fact that we're familiar with the fact it. A lot of the city. Just lucien schinder areas. They were the most impacted by cohen. From the standpoint of shutdowns fewer people were visiting the center city as you said. Businesses were closed so many organizations leaders direct correlation between customer acquisition success relationship grows and branch network configuration feeder branch network possibly impact positive relationship growth made from a negative perspective from from the perspective that you have urban areas did it did. It seem to have a fact or has it more than made up for based on your digital capabilities inability to open a branch range new branch account. He expand relationship digitally. Yes what we saw is look. Our deposits through our branches are back to pre pandemic levels. Now there's been some shift in where those are occurring on their more heavily occurring in some of our suburban locations versus urban. But we're also seeing some of our downtown midtown manhattan type locations. We're seeing people begin to return to the office. And we're seeing a spike in activity in the also so when i look at our performance levels through the branch network were right back to where we were prior to the pandemic but our ability to market to clients digitally on his has been a growth growth vector for us right because we were able to educate a client around how to open accounts through the digital platform and so we're seeing it continued in sustained increase in accounts being opened digitally. So we see. this is just additive. It's really helping in both both places hungry for revisal. Customer base major coverage served as part of the credit card. Portfolios opposed damning primary. Jackie kansas city to city. Try to move consumers either to a abroad relationship via digital channels or being served by branches. Yeah so i mean we're we're lucky right. We have this fantastic set of clients who have city card relationships with us across the united states and we are expanding our relationship banking model leveraging the strength of our brand and the quality a national scale of our credit card franchise as well as our leaning wealth management capability so in order to do this right because we have a light physical footprint were building on our digital capabilities and our nationwide atm network to deliver a full breath of services to those customers. One of our most important strategies at city is building multi relationship customers. We call these m. rc's right mrc's we love an acronym in banking these are these are clients that have a deposit and lending relationship with us in there. There are several examples of how we're marketing to our customers and providing incremental value to them to deepen their relationships with us so for example will market a cash bonus to an existing card customer who opens up a checking account with us and recently were targeting our american airlines card clients and providing them with miles if they open a checking account with us in incomplete the opera requirements and so that's really value. Add for these clients because we're rewarding them in a currency that.

"They're no longer coming in every friday to cash in. Hey chat instead. They're using other channels like atm. Mobile direct deposit as a way to handle those basic routine transactions and so the the physical branch becomes more of a want. You know it's something. They want When they need advice and guidance and so we're looking at our footprint that way we will always look at ways to optimize our footprint. We want to make sure that. Were renovating branches. That were relocating them. That were in high opportunity. Markets and at times will close them and will open new ones but we feel really great about how well positioned we are in the cities where we have footprint for emission. A little bit about technology you brought into the branches you know. We have both go past the days. When friday's a month the month. We'd have line out the door people. Catchy check before direct a thing and just an amazing change in the way that rancher us what some of the technology is the branch of recently. That really helped facilitate not only the service aspect but overall the coverage gave me affect of of the branch yet. So you're right. I mean there are a lot of changes that were thinking about as we think about how consumers want to interact with us. So it's no longer about Coming in and doing basic transactions. It's more about unexperienced when they come into the branch and we were challenged this year or like all banks or with the pandemic and something that i didn't think i would ever experience in my life where consumers were afraid to leave their home or were under lockdown orders even clients who are not digitally savvy figured out how to use digital capabilities to bank in. We saw that we saw that. In droves and once clients tried out digital capabilities some of which had existed for some time. They loved them and they continued to end. Example of that is mobile. Mobile check deposit rights. The clients were receiving their student. Was jack's or other tax. And they didn't want to leave their homes and so we educated them on how to use mobile check deposit and we did that through how to videos and emails and even a banker assisted boxers. And what we saw. Is that mobile check. Deposits at city increased forty percent during the pandemic and continued people used it and loved it and now mobile check deposits account for forty one percent of all checks deposited at city. So there's an example of how the ease of technology wants the client learn how to use. It is something that they embraced now. We also looked at the need for human connection right and in the end we are all social beings we like to connect with other humans and banking is a motive then especially for the big decisions in someone's financial lives and so we decided that we wanted to provide avenue for clients to maintain that human connection with their banker and we introduced video banking. And it's been an exciting way that were using technology as another way to create the human interaction and so We basically brought the human touch to the client through a high tech interaction. we are in essence going to the client. And what's cool about this. Is that clients are able to engage with a banker that they trust from the comfort of their own home. And we have gotten fantastic feedback about this from clients They say that they feel like they're in the bank branch. They love meeting with the banker on that. They already have a relationship with a love. Seeing the team in the in the branch as being great for us while we've met kids and significant others in even pats and on the outcomes been fantastic are remote account opening just in q one of this year represented eleven percent of new deposits and so this technology was a way for us to connect with our clients in a way that made them comfortable. That allowed us to provide advice and guidance and it also gives us the opportunity to extend our reach to clients We've met with customers who've moved to new cities and we are providing a face to face way to bank with us. That's virtual as you just because when you mentioned video begging. I was taking the machine in the brand. That has video taylor even warren a better environment. Because is he actually communicate from your home with a banker that in the past was only available either by phone or actually meeting in person in in fiscal semi see really would come to came out of the pandemic it was. We had done a test in learn. It was something we were. We were excited about before the pandemic and we had done a testing learn in new york and had really great outcomes from it in the fourth quarter of twenty two thousand nineteen hundred of course pandemic hit in march and we quickly a launch capability. I using zoom It was you know. Look consumers really rapidly got cut accustomed to zoom as a tool whether it is meeting with family a having a happy hour with college friends exercising or or top into a doctor so it was the perfect timing to accelerate the tool as a way to bring the human connection to our clients. When you talk about reggie gave your roy and talk about the future branches you'd have to look beyond the redesigned ranch more than the the beyond officials structure Roll cages how of roles adjusted over the last three years in your branches wear. I would imagine you're managers still doing million same thing. But you're you're tellers especially during the pandemic concrete foles holiday chita city. Yeah i mean it definitely. Has i mean we are reimagining formats for sure. But you can't just reimagine the format you have to rethink about the roles that we have. We survey our clients we engaged. We do customer research. We listen to our clients to find out what's important to them in their experience in in the bank and a in the olden days You know the largest number of humans that were in a branch were are tellers and as transactions have migrated to digital capabilities. We've changed the way we think about the roles in the branch and and what clients have told us is. They wanna be welcomed end. They want advice guidance and they wanna be educated in so. We've responded to that. We've moved away from tellers in long. Lines towards providing advice and more focused experience for for clients aligning our people resources in the in the branch to match up with that objectives for example we implemented a called a concierge. The great thing about it was it. Was it opportunity to promoted and developed tellers. But we're taking that person at employees from behind the teller line and putting them in the lobby on in there greeting clients and they're building a relationship with the customer and their doolan title they can process transactions in open accounts and do a name or address change and really have the responsibility for shepherding the client experience and that may include introducing specialist like a home lending officer or wealth adviser or a banker for more complex interaction. And after we did this after we introduce this concierge. We'd seen that. They are three times more productive in cells in referrals than a teller was and branches that have concierges have higher client experience scores. We use net promoter score to measure client experience and.

I can put it Thank you for all that you do in the various spaces that you're a part of What about you gabby Where are you at with this new gig in terms of What you're trying to do within nf yet. I've been A diversity equity inclusion blinding practitioner for the last ten years in really this new hampshire with. Nfl has been really really exciting. discussed really the more fascinating part to me In having an opportunity to lead the effort goes beyond just diversity as a practitioner For me it's really all the other parts that keep me up at night The parts that would influence Candidates employees associates to wanna stay within an organization. So it's really around the side of the house that deals more with inclusion More equitable workforce building that sense of cultural belonging in an organization. And that means that are focused. Can't just beyond diversity for the sake of boxes but migiro really is rather to try and influence and create the type of environment where employees associates feel that they can bring their full selves to work each and every day in creating more accessible equitable workforce and in addition to that. I mean you know abercrombie and fitch. It's really really interesting. Time to work in the space where our mission is really been dedicated to amplify engaging in power empowering folk small different backgrounds and really foster in an open environment where folks can come together. Listen learn and really take action to move from conversations toward action and influencing the products that we're creating to reflect our global customer so it's been really fascinating You know i start my career in higher education working in nyu and columbia then pivoted to citi group Leading our diversity inclusion efforts early career talent and then transitioning to the fashion industry which is really really exciting opportunity to make a make an impact end create product that has the opportunity to create social change right across our across our communities in really interesting way. I have so many questions About kind of what you all have seen so far but first jazzman How do you include that d. i. lens as somebody who's on the agency side and also trying to you know achieve more equity in the greater world. Yeah i. I'm just so to be part of this conversation and hearing from jason gabby amongst inspiring folks so I think as an account manager really partnering with clients and but also partnering with leadership in how we infused diversity equity inclusion not just from an internal perspective but so that emanates within How we partner with clients We just ensuring that yes. We're being responsible and that brands are being responsible but also Figuring out how what we can do to not just check the box like abbie said but actually make tangible change. And so i think for me personally. It's just something that i've always been about which led me to Being part of the in her shoes movement A nonprofit base-year l. a. And so i have this unique Intersection where i get to see What does social impact look like from grassroots Point of view but then also in my day job like how. How can we partner with clients in doing this. Great work in continuing this great work especially with brands that wants to create
