No, he bought another company took over the Los feliz three two. A lot of great theaters just fucking shut down, including the UCB theater, also shut down. All right. I can't get caught. I've been looking here. I can't get Intel on whether or not the veggie grill by that cinerama dome theater by the now closed arc light is open or not. It looks like it says it's open, but it doesn't necessarily let you order pick up online. So maybe that's what's going on. Here's the thing with UCB Franklin getting shut down. I'm like, hey, I want to pick up a copy of Martin and orloff today. But where? But where? And I go over there. What did you find it? Franklin's closed. No. You want a deep baby. 24 80 P DVD. "Okay, Chris, you're up. You have number two. I'm going to pick the movie that I had the most fun watching in 2018, and that was Mission Impossible fallout. Damn it. Good one. This is fucking fighting some bathrooms. This is just an amazing Mission Impossible movie. What an incredible shout out to the cinerama dome experience of just getting your wig pushed back by Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill fighting. This was the mcquarrie mission impossibles of kind of found like a new gear for these movies, but I thought even this by those standards was just like a cut above. And I think I saw it at least twice in the theaters. I may have seen it three times that year or once it finally came out on streaming or whatever, but God damn it. Mission Impossible fall. We've talked about it endlessly, but this is just an awesome, awesome blockbuster. So I'll go there. Amanda, do you remember how we started? Yeah, this was our birthday movie. Chris saw it with us. We saw it in the arc light. It was delightful. We got beers and everything, and then I had to go to the bathroom so badly, but I was like, no, I can't miss a minute of these two people fighting on a cliff with a helicopter. And then we've got sushi afterwards for dinner. It was awesome. The one thing I will say about these movies and especially fallout is if you read the synopsis, you're like, sir, excuse me. 18 different side plots about plutonium and then going to like a refugee camp and Kandahar or whatever and you forget when you're watching the movie because the stunts are so incredible and the set pieces are so incredible. But there's some absolute nonsense in these movies, but I love it still. One of the more underrated aspects of this movie is Sean Harris return as Solomon lane. Terrorizing Ethan hunt's dreams just wonderful movie. Okay, so I have two picks. I'm Kristen and select a category for that one. Blockbuster. Blockbuster. Okay..

"Frame. Yeah and ought to see that movie. Avid cinerama uh. Is there any way you can see. Cinerama well i guess the cinerama dome although it's in jeopardy i it's closed right now. Isn't it because well. The owners went went belly up about six years ago. There is a director that said. I'm going to clean up. The west was won. And get it to where i can broadcasted it or show it again at the cinerama dome and he did is. He didn't clean it up. Good enough the whole the whole movie theater to it. I was expecting it to be seamless. Yeah well they needed to go digital is what they needed to do. And then you won't have that jitter from the the project about a year and a half to go see it and you're sitting in the theater with everybody else and all of a sudden the screen opens up and it's so impressive. Isn't that cool. I it looks like believe it or not. There's good news for the hollywood cinerama dome. it looks like a. Amc is going to take over the arc light complex and may in fact reopen it. So amc's acquired pacific theater. So i'm hoping that they reopen it. It's been up in the air. And of course a lot of people in the movie industry have been very upset because that was of course that's legendary. It appeared in a lot of movies itself on sunset. Boulevard there A format blu. Ray of how the west was won and it it came out in the smile addition which they actually contacted the screen or the pitcher on your screen view. The effect of that wide angle shot. They hadn't built the big fancy when the him now and they had areas alexis and things like that and so we go in. Check those out and we could shoot things with those and two days a week. We'd go to universal and we go. We went to albert whitlock s- workshop where he talked with us about how you did. Like eighty five percent of the hindenburg with glass shots. Wow and he showed his glass shots from the birds and from a lot of different movies he was originally from england and they had him up in an attic in one of the stages in universal and that was his workshop and he was up there with the mitchell cameron. He'd he'd sit there and eat paint away. He do these glass shots. Matte paintings i now. He's kind of lost art now. Oh he was like the best he was like. You know now they do digital matte paintings but at that time it was a real sheet of glass and he'd bring it out on the set and he wanted up and look at it and paint and just the parts needed. And then you'd leave the rest of it clear so that you could shoot threaten. Do these things and yeah. This was back when special effects was a real hands on art yet. I answer like pre industrial light magic. Even oh yeah much before that and they still use optical printers and then people started computerizing these printers and there was a company in atlanta..

I don't wanna spoil anything because although it did like seventy eight million dollars or something this weekend. So it's a gigantic movie but car. Magnus car magnets are fantastic. I went to the actual theater twice. Correct this one is not streaming. You have to go to so fast we all right. Tell me about that. People wearing mass inside the theatre or no no. No nobody wearing masks. No nobody wearing a mask. The staff was all wearing masks. Like social distancing or no no for was with year the theaters completely. Full no no they were. I think people are coming to the movies. Go very slowly. Although i i saw the movie at the landmark which is generally kind of an art house they happen to be playing f nine so i don't think the landmark crowd was especially rushing out to see vin diesel about the family. I don't think that was necessarily their thing. So i am sure there were full theaters of did seventy million. There were full theaters somewhere in america this weekend. And i you know what. I've i've come around to the fact that i think movie theaters are make it. Movie theaters are going to right now. Here's a question which one of the one of the big theater chains went bankrupt right. So like the arc light. That's by me is still closed correct. And they're not reopening really. Yeah they're not reopening. Somebody else will have to step in and take over that. I know you you're dan manhattan. Beach called arclight beach. Cities are culver. City closed arclight. Hollywood closed with the cinerama dome. Hopefully that will reopen. But no that chain went belly up during the pandemic. And i understand why but you know what people are going to go back. I mean there were groups of there was a group of probably twenty people at the fast and furious screening on saturday that i went to mean you know all this talk about the world is going to be completely different on the other side. I'm starting to think the world is going to all exaggerated that the world is actually going to go back to being kind to exactly like it was before we thought we'd still be wearing masks like in two year old. We'll always wear masks like in the future. I think people are still going to wear masks on planes. Yeah i'll wear one on a plane. Our when i none of us were require me. You might as well not catch a cold or whatever i mean. It seems like it's it seems like it's a reasonable thing but i'm not wearing a mask the rest of the time. I mean there are still people. I went and hid at the driving range yesterday. And there's still people wearing masks out there. I'm like it's out. I assume if you're wearing a mask that you weren't vaccinated if you're wearing a mask. I'm on the assumption that you're not vaccinated because everywhere it says you're allowed to skip the mask if you have been vaccinated so when i see a mask i think maybe that person didn't get their shots or maybe they're one shot or something like that. So yeah now. I i think the world is coming back in a real and meaningful way and i don't think all the things we expected to change are necessarily going to change. Do you I think there is going to be after-effects. Tell me what the difference is like. I'm been to a bar yet if you No but i'm not a big bar or been to indoor restaurants abundance anyone sitting at the bar when you're at the restaurant trying to think no not just sitting at a binding i think bars are a casualty of the pandemic. "I haven't been back to the state since i haven't been to sit a with ron and russell watches crazy. Listen edgar let me just pitch this idea because you know things are going very well for you. Have this movie coming out last night. And so if you could just by the cinerama dome we could. It's available now. You could just go watch it. There is that a unreasonable. Just come on. Come on. And i think people on on twitter underestimate how much money i have. How can you say no to wait. Wait they overestimate the overestimates right. I roam it's like. Witnessing ramadan thing happened suddenly people said hey. Can you not just by sitting around within the hollywood like yes. I have tens of millions of la real estate money to and and operating capital. Yes good tax deduction though so you know that's not a bad idea. That's not a bad idea. I i mean i listen. Everyone loves the movie and rightfully. So it's it's so good. This movie is so. It's artistically inspirational. But just i love it. It's just you know. Even though the movie has its ups and its downs. It just feels good like the movie just feels good does it does it. Is that how you perceive the story yourself a greg. Why i guess part of the inspiration for it was the Having so band. I kind of like you know like it like a superfan fan when you five suddenly like very aware response what they look like and what they sound like and then of over the years being so of an ongoing kind of like turning into like a long light fan obsession. I think like one of the reasons. I wanted to make the documentaries. I felt that run russell in this century since two thousand Beethoven had so just kind of like flying in the face of the trajectory of any other band. Been going that long. I can think of anybody else that was like he was bringing out new material so regularly that was as good as if not better than the in big embiid inverted commas golden period. I think we did like. I think it's fair to say. I'm gonna speak on behalf. They don't like to think of a goto period because of all goethe's so so to me. That was the thing that was amazing is but most like bands going through slowing russell. Have i feel that will run. A rustling been doing is to be loaded too so keep kind of pushing the boats out like keep doing what they wanna do. And just saying to the audience catch up and i think that's something that most bands don't do that to nevis kinda lose an audience at russell have ever done that. All not like Liberals you know well. I wonder also because you know if you're so tied to a result of something where you know it's like oh i guess we live or die by this thing whether we lose a thing or get a thing. They preserve the the marquee sign They have Been apple's done this in a couple of places there's I in Coventry gardens is a pretty gorgeous one in in london. As well as there's the one in downtown. Paris is quite look at this. Look at this. This is the this is the actual movie theater. and it's the lobby preserve the balcony put in parquet floors. I mean this is craig. this is just. "I unfortunately woke up to the other day. I'm sorry no it's good. I need to know these things. Helen mccrory who played a lot of different roles in her life. But my personal favorite. Aunt paul from peaky blinders past fifty two from cancer this week. is obviously season. Six got delayed filming. They went back into production recently. I don't i don't know if she's a part of it at all But it's definitely gonna change the trajectory for the tv show as a whole but also Just heartbreaking because she was a wonderful actress. She's a powerhouse on that show mustang everybody's posts like just actors from all of the things that she's been in and just like yeah. She just seems like she was just a dope person. Yeah like a really cool. Prime her her husband damian lewis who. I'm also a very big fan of a band of brothers and stuff like that had a very heartfelt message that he was the one who announced it to everyone on on twitter. And i'm heartbroken by it she's probably my In my top three favorite characters on that show by tar for sure Yeah definitely. I think i had her as my number two actually But you know. Definitely lots of love out to to Damian lewis and the rest of her family and her family as well peaky blinders. It's a huge loss to the acting. World i wish them all the best. The yeah just bummed out man. Yeah yeah i literally woke up and my wife heard me from the rim. Just go fuck morning. She's like you said buteau what happened. And i was like no. But they made a huge announcement that was a strike to the film industry that they are closing the doors of arclight cinemas and pacific theaters. Yeah I don't i don't know if arc light is a a internet or like a national one but in la there's like several locations including the world famous cinerama dome You seen pictures of hollywood. You've probably seen pictures of the cinerama dome For me I'm more hit by pacific theatres. 'cause one of the theaters that i went to growing up off. It was a pacific theater. Down in san diego and It's it's hard news to here and Makers are up and not up. arms isn't really quite the right term but they are speaking out and just saying how there was an article done by the l. a. times basically the headline is the click beta. I can't imagine hollywood without and then it's just a bunch of filmmakers. Explain why this loss matters. And it's people like edgar writes A whole bunch of other filmmakers. Of just i mean the cinerama dome alone is is such a. It's like at the and went down. Yeah and the and is now. amc amc africa. Yeah so it's i mean we've been talking the past few months just the state of even just the theater industry and What's going to happen and they tried. I think even just a couple of weeks ago. They were making post about like things coming out to theater soon and this took everybody by.

Iconic Theaters in California to Close Over Pandemic Losses
"The pandemic has cost us a lot, but the hope that someday post vaccine we would return to our favorite places that hope has carried us through the hardest parts of these last 13 months. Well. News came this week that the iconic Arclight cinema and 58 year old Cinerama Dome in Hollywood would not be reopening post pandemic. In fact, the owners of ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theater said none of their locations would be reopening. Post Cove it. That's right. No more ArcLight caramel corn or movie pore size glasses of wine. Joining me to remember these theaters, particularly the iconic Hollywood location is Christy Lemire. She writes for Roger ebert dot com and Who hosts the podcast breakfast all day, and she's our regular one of our regular and most beloved film critics on Fridays. Hi, Christie. Hello, my friend. What a sad day it is. I know, And we have all spent so many glorious hours at the arc lights, especially the one in Hollywood. Talk about many, and yeah, from your perspective. So it's funny when you're a film critic, especially if you're a freelancer like so many of us are like you don't have an office, right? You watch movies at your house or you right at your house, and so going to the Arc light on a Monday night to see a big studio release, and all your fellow critics were there, and there's a buzz in the audience as people who love film You know, it's It's like going to your favorite office but also your favorite watering hole and there's such a great energy the minute you walked into that lobby with just the job. Soaring feelings and the huge marquee with all the times and the big clock, and you felt like you were walking into a cathedral of swords. And yet there's also a very intimate sense of community because you could go and have a bye deep beforehand or have a glass of wine afterward and talking about what you have just seen

"Blake Stubbs. We covered Chicago movies before we move on just real quickly. What's your favorite movie that was filmed and set in Chicago? Building said in Chicago. Oh, absolutely a thief. I love thief. I could watch Thief any day of the week. I'm a big Michael Mann. That too. I have to. I have to confess. But I also love his L a work one of my favorites of this past year. Was the trial of the Chicago seven. That was such a good movie Now. Was that ever in theaters? No, that was a Netflix produced. Well, okay. The short answer is no because it was widely released on Netflix. But it did. I believe do what a lot of films Netflix does do, and I think they were able to get a screen somewhere, so that if it was any pick up with the Oscars They can say it did have a theatrical release. It is the type of film that could maybe one day get a short theatrical relief. Um, because Netflix, you know will do that if it has to overcome any hurdles with criteria for awards submission, But honestly, this was produced to be released on Netflix. On guy thought it was an excellent pairing of Aaron Sorkin with the cast have to work with. I mean fashion. Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance. Why I could not be a bigger fan of I thought that this movie was maybe and again. This is Erin circuit of a bigger in circumstance. So over the many years I've tried to see his material age. You know? How does it aged with today's, uh, you know, current political climate. This was a movie that I think hit at a good time. I think this was a very well made production. I think that the cast was outstanding. And I think that if you like watching and listening there in Cirque and dialogue, it's filled with little Easter eggs that the fans are gonna love. Um, I know that at some point, it's like he needs to get some new Eastern, like, well, he puts him in there because they're Sure for the things you know, like it. Z like his language is his thing. But I found Sasha Baron Cohen on Mark Rylance, particularly to be outstanding in the incredible Sasha Baron Cohen. Wow nailed it. I'm absolutely huge favorite in that film for me was Michael Keaton. How cool was he? Yes, it is proof that an actor can take what I would what I would call a small amount of screen time because he wasn't like a main star of the film and make a massive impact and and proof that there are no small parts is small actors and Michael Keaton is more on the titan level, in my opinion when he when he gets the right We get the right material. He really brings the juice. I also wanna give a shout out to particular after that has been breaking out the last couple of years. Yeah, Yeah. Abdul Mateen, the second who was on watchman playing Dr Manhattan on HBO this last year. He's in this film. He will also be in the candy man film that will be released in 2021. This guy is outstanding. I have not seen him be bad in anything. Not that I would expect you to be bad, but I mean, he just every time I see him. I'm like, Wow, this guy's got it and and in this particular Film he was. He was quite a presence for the limited time he was given, because of course, these are all historical characters. So like if you're watching, and you know the story of the trial, the Chicago seven. He's only there for a particular short period of time. But what an impression in my opinion, one of the things you mentioned it was historical. The character of Lee whiner was totally different than what he really looked like. He looked like Abbie Hoffman's brother. He had the beard the Afro the whole nine yards. In the movie, he was clean cut. Which was, you know a bit of a stretch, and I think that was because he wasn't that big of a player. In the film on day and they didn't want to take away from Sasha Baron Cohen. I'm sure you know, I think I think they do. They kind of allow it toe visually. It's a downplay so that you know who do it just your focus to at all times, and that's one of those. Dramatic licensing issues that you'll run into. I think whether it's theatrical or cinematic. It happens all the time. Lee whiner on Ah, show Ah, great interview with him and he is such a cool guy. He is an incredible dude like a real deal, hippie and he was just so down to Earth and Oh, it was great. It was great. All right, before a couple more things about well, the year 2020 in in in film, the number one grossing star off 2020. I found was Samuel L. Jackson, who is in like four movies. He was number one, Dwayne Johnson was in number two stars making money out of movies. Right when you do for movies in the year, you're gonna make some money, right? Yeah. I don't know. You would hope you would hope? Yeah. Do you know I don't know if you saw there was a commercial with Samuel L. Jackson was for capital One who? He, You know he does commercial for him. With Santa and Santa was John Travolta. And they're talking. You know, Samuel Jackson makes a great offer from Capital one. And John Travolta says, Well, you know, that's a great offer, You know, have you are you have you been good? Have you done with the bad words? Those air? That's his question to Samuel L. Jackson. He goes, Yeah. Hit John Travolta as Santa wraps and says Ho ho. I don't think so. That was so hysterical. So I had to get I had to get that in. Um I know a big You're a big fan of this movie, which was incredible. It wasn't 2020. It came on 2019, right. Once upon a time in Hollywood. Yeah. So I am a big fan of once upon a time in Hollywood and in 2020, You know, everybody talks about how they were locked, You know, Shut in. You know, you had to find ways to escape. And what What is your form of escapism? I think became a question. Everybody in some form or another had the answer. For me. One of the pinnacles of it was two years ago have at this point. Now we're almost two years removed from it once from the time in Hollywood came out because it's you know, night 2019 was just a 2019. I was so excited for that film. I saw that film with the music box in Chicago. I saw it in 70 millimeter with a packed house full of people. It was probably my last Big cinematic experience, because I I come up to Chicago because I'm down in Peoria, but I went to Chicago for cinematic experiences all the time. Specifically at the music box. I love that fear. On For me. I feel like cinema is a great way to escape. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a big one. For me. I love the characters. I think the movie is goes on a bit of a wild ride, but I also just think it's about people at a certain point. And what Los Angeles in 1969 looks like a lot of the buildings and things that you see are still there, and they all look almost identical like the Cinerama Dome..

Quentin Tarantino on 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'
"Is quentin tarantino on the podcast for the first time and it'd be last tokyo ten films for his nine enjoy. We're delighted to be joined on the podcast for the first time we can't believe is the first time you've been on the apple podcasts lacasse quentin tarantino. Yes podcast all right so i know i know but you hear now as i am with <hes> once upon time in hollywood and you must be delighted with the reaction so far in the states the opening weekend your biggest yet yeah and also i guess generally do you keep your ear into the ground in terms of how people are reacting to the film as well. Oh yeah no. I mean we're here. Tuesday effort opened in america and so so just before i got on the plane on monday i wednesday i think today but i spent i spent the whole weekend going all over los angeles seeing it play at this plate the bruin where where she goes to the cinerama dome at my feet or the new beverly add so and and one of the things about my movies i have scenes where the audience is supposed to react either it be laughter or suspense since or exclamation points or whatever whatever the deal is so. It's pretty easy for me to walk into a theater and see whether or not the movies working or not because i have all these like <hes> signpost along the way yeah do you do you go up to the counter and go. Can i get into this movie for free ideas to try to sneak in without causing too much of a commotion at the new beverly europe anyway yeah exactly yeah. That's the one place i can't yeah i mean there are a number of of scenes i think that are designed to elicit that reaction from audiences as you say and i think it's hard to talk but it's moving away without really kind of starting with the the end <hes> in a strange way because much where you began when you first began to conceive this project in terms of refining what happened to sharon tate and chase bringing eh everyone else in the house on that night i get the feeling that you are gripped by a burning sense of injustice. Obviously what happened. The night is horrendous and you're using the the power cinema to rewrite history is is that we began. No that's kind of that really is i mean i guess the real beginning beginning was witnessing dynamic between an actor had been at things for a while and their stunt double that had been working for you know at least around a decade together you yeah so that's i think where i i came up with it and then when i but then once i actually started coming about putting together a story then yeah did come up with the end first and then work work work backwards to get to get there but yeah there is <hes> you can say i'm using the power of cinema to write bronx longs or whatever i mean i think the the sentence i would use is metaphorically saving sharon yeah.
