"Well, I guess that just sort of happens when you write about it. You recall a lot of stuff. So it's either primary sources or authoritative secondary sources. So it's like, you know, when I'm citing media reports, it's like archived mainstream media or local newspapers, you know, I don't even really rely on my own past work. Hardly at all in the book. And a lot of it, yeah, as either police reports, Senate reports or congressional reports, you know, different things like that. I tried to make it as really authoritative as possible because when you're talking about this stuff, I mean, obviously I'm going to get labeled a conspiracy theorist and stuff. So my goal was to make the most detailed through a well sourced case humanly possible. And it took a lot of work and sleepless nights and it was difficult. To put all this together, but I tried to make a really detailed airtight case for how the power structure of the U.S. actually is in practice. And explain why Epstein was never caught before and enabled because I mean, you have people like Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife, saying an early 2020. We all knew what Epstein was doing. And I mean, there's not even a direct like McCain Epstein connection. So like obviously the mccains are just like powerful Senate family. In former Republican nominee for president. So, you know, how did they know Epstein? And if they say everyone knew what he was doing, what does that mean, right? Can you kind of share? I feel like right now, people in our country, especially after the pandemic, I don't know, everyone's nerve endings are so raw, and it's just, it's the red, this, the blue this, you're on this team or that team, everyone blames the other side. They look to the guy in The White House as either the hero or the villain, but like what's the reality? Okay, so I think Americans for a long time have been psychologically conditioned to look for a political savior to their problems and then both parties are controlled by the same people ultimately at the end of the day. At least the vast majority of the parties are. I mean, sometimes you have people that sort of sneak in there who are sort of renegades occasionally, but there's not many of them. And I don't really know how much influence they really have besides, you know, making useful clips on C-SPAN that are then put on social media where they say things that are true and accurate, you know? I mean, how much can they really do if they're just one person and how many people are in the Congress in the Senate? So that's definitely a small minority. But in general, the RNC and the DNC are very controlled. And so you're basically having people looking, you know, as long as we vote for this person, they'll fix the country and everything's fine. And how many decades now have people been saying that? And look where we are now, because regardless of who's in office, they follow the same shit, they do the same policies. They start the same wars. Yeah, okay, Trump to his credit started less wars, but he also continued drone bombings and stuff like that, all over the world.

"You would think that the given all of that, the Republican Party would descend into meditation and figure, you know, wow, we've got to do something to get those voters back. Well, everything we've been talking about is in fact an indication of how they've repudiated that notion. And have thought far from us to far from any desire to moderate, we're going to purge those people who would even think about moderating who to us are moderates that would include our sitting governor Doug ducey, who was in fact censured. That would include the Speaker of the House, rusty Bowers, who, along with doocy, refused to go along with this notion that 2020 had been stolen, he too was censured. He also was beaten in the primary, really thrashed by a far right opponent. And for that matter, they have censured the wife, Cindy McCain, the wife of John McCain, who was this icon in Arizona Republican politics. So despite these demographic changes that are taking place or perhaps because of them, perhaps in digging in their heels. The Republican Party has moved farther right even as the state itself has become as one of its local pollsters, noble calls it magenta, the lightest shade of red. So do you think that's likely to hurt the Republicans, chances in Arizona in the state elections? We will see. I mean, that is the $1 million question this November because the headwinds facing the Democrats are considerable. Mark Kelly, the U.S. senator, is up for reelection. And he is certainly vulnerable, or at least one would expect that he would be vulnerable, but now he'll be running against a guy named Blake masters, who was a protege of the venture capitalist Peter Thiel, who he owes a 2020 election denier whose campaigns signs that I saw festooning the highways of Arizona said things like Blake masters as U.S. senator will prosecute Fauci. Blake masters as U.S. senator won't ask for your pronouns. And so whether that kind of culture war rhetoric is going to deny the Republicans a real opportunity to pick up a seat remains to be seen. It's also the case we were talking about Carrie Lake earlier and Lake is a formidable presence because she's been a member of the media for a long time. She was a local Fox host for several years in the Phoenix area. Very poised and can really hold the audience. But her rhetoric regarding, I mean, it's very, very, it's very party of retribution. Lots of swaggering gun talk and we're not going to let them California. The California scum are not going to take over our party. Whether that's going to play remains to be seen, if it does not, then the hope among Arizona establishment Republicans that I talked to, their hope is that they will then be able to say, okay, have you learned now? Have you learned that trumpism that maga ism that going all the way to the right and embracing crazy conspiracy theories is not going to work because we should have won these elections and instead you handed it to them with your hot blooded rhetoric.

Oh well first of all let me say I'm very pleased to be here. I'm not an ambassador yet. Because i have not been confirmed yet but i will relish the title once. I have it just to make that clear. But i'm listening. I'm so proud of megan. And i what i look forward to many many ways to be able to see more of her mc more certainly see more my granddaughter liberty I think she's she's done a wonderful job. I love her independence. Her dad would be so proud of her. And and you know. I just i. I wish you the best in whatever endeavor she chooses to do. But i'm i'm glad she chose a little bit of family over over too much work right now. It's important thank you mom. We'll send the senator mccain really pushed for megan to take this job. Why was he so adamant. Do you think for her to do it. And what do you think he would be most proud of well. He was adamant because he thought it would be a good format for her. And knowing you know her as you know we call her john mccain and address when she was little so we knew she could do it and we knew she had. She had the the ability to make waves. Or you know deal with controversy all of the things that you do so well on this show and he also wanted her to have an opportunity to really to really express herself and and and spreader wings a little more. It was really his suggestion and his idea that she do this. When offered the job. So i know. And i know he's very proud of a right now i know is x. Mom i didn't die. I'm just leaving the show. Died this memorial. thank you guys. I'm still can come to these anytime everywhere. Every time someone leaves it sounds like a funeral. This is like a funeral. We don't we don't pay so cindy you famously crossed party lines and took a lot of heat to endorse joe biden for president. Back in twenty twenty we surprised by how much pushback you've gone and how big a leap wasn't for you to put yourself out there like that. That must've been rough. Well for me it. Was you know. I knew the other candidate was not right. I knew we couldn't deal with four more years of the other candidate and so for me. It was an easy decision. Because i knew what was right and i was in my mind and in my heart i felt like i was doing what was right for the country and i still believe that today as far as taking heat of course i knew i was going to take that was that there was no doubt that was going to happen so and know i pushed back pretty good on him but i i'm just proud to be to have been some assistance to a man that i believe is is a good president and is leading this country in the right direction and practices civility and an honor and decency as he governs. And that's to me is most important. Well mom i'm so proud of you. Because at president biden has announced that he will nominate. You was the us ambassador to the united nations agencies for food and agriculture mom. How does it feel for you. I know how passionate you are about this space. Philanthropies always been a big part of your life. What are you looking forward to the most. And are you going to learn italian because you have to. I think what i'm looking forward. Most is the opportunity to to serb within issues that i've been very passionate about as you said for years You know this is a combination food and agriculture is probably the biggest kind of humanitarian mission. You can perform because we can't function without it but it encompasses everything else that i've dealt with for so long. It's it's human trafficking it's refugees. It's it's all the elements that that strike that happens in the world has all the elements that circle around food and can be very disastrous. And so for me to be able to have the opportunity to represent. My country is not only an incredible honor. But it's it's never my wildest dreams would be able to do something like this and i'm i'm deeply honored. The president would would put such such such session ability in me and think thinks so highly made to put me in this position. One of president biden's biggest challenges. Right now is fighting this fourth wave of kovin which we are really in my view in the thick of your home state. Arizona is seeing more cases than they've seen since march. I believe and your governor says he will now fight a mask. Mandate is this risking people's lives to score political points. Do you think. I just don't know i. You know i am vaccinated. I wear masks. I believe that we should be good citizens and take care of each other in that respect so my my thought and all this is the is really towards the people who refused to be vaccinated. I don't understand it. And now i do. I not understand it. But i think it's very endangering me now. I mean and themselves. So i would like to see more of a more of an encouragement on vaccinations and making sure that these people feel comfortable comfortable about it. Make sure that we can get them vaccinated and protect our communities. Better and master part of that master part of it as far as a mandate goes. I have to leave that up to our governor. But i be personally i will. I will wear a mask wherever i feel. I should absolutely wear it. Well mom one of the things. I am looking forward to as liberties spending more time with her grandmother. It's important because if we don't have if everyone of the country is not able to vote you don't really have a country not only have the filibuster. You won't have a country so for me. It seems like it's an emergency right. Now that we get rid of the filibuster even though we might pay down the road but if we don't have voting rights what are we got nothing joy. I'm really glad that you follow up on this point so i actually mentioned this in my bed. And the washington post if we were to eliminate the or create a so-called exception which actually doesn't exist so you'd have to limit the filibuster in order to pass voting rights legislation which just as a quick reminder. I'm an original cosponsor that legislation and have voted to support an advance set. Continue to do so but if you eliminate the filibuster to pass that piece of legislation then in four years or any time when the other party gains control without the filibuster in place all of those voting rights protections could be easily wiped out with a simple majority vote and you could have a nationwide ban on mail in voting. you could have requirements for voter. Id at every level of government for every election throughout the country. So the thing to remember. And i know this is. This can be really hard to do when we're feeling really worried about what's coming right in front of us is to think a couple years down the road on what it looks like if you remove this tool this protection for the minority. What happens when you're the minority and that tool is no longer there to protect your rights. So the sense of urgency. I think many of us share in wanting to protect voting rights. And we're all working to do this across the country but eliminating this tool would result in very negative restrictions on voting rights in the future. So thinking about this from the long term rather than the just right now term. i think is really important. And it's the way that i'm viewing this discussion. So i wanna say our thanks to senate accused cinema. I hope that you all will find a way to pass legislation where we don't have to talk about voting rights. We can just have. We'll be right back next. "Welcome back. senator. Kirsten cinema is the moderate democrat. Who has the power to make or break. Some of the vital bills president biden and her own party are counting on and she joins us now. Please welcome for the first time. I think senator kirstin cinema. Sarah has the first question. Yeah first of all senator. Thank you for being here for megan's lash show with us Now i know you guys have a special friendship. Can you tell us about it. Well mega my. I have a lot in common We're both from arizona. We love cacti. I think we're both toughest nails. And we're both fiercely independent. And so i think you know those. Similarities brought us together over the years and We've just struck up. A friendship. And i will admit that sometimes we just are texting in the middle of the night probably because megan was having trouble saving when she was pregnant and me. Because i i don't really have a good reason. I think i was just up in the middle night stressed about stuff but anyway we become friends over the years. And it's a delight to be with you and i wish making weller next endeavor. I'm so honored you came on for the last show senator I just You know you don't do that many interviews. So i'm just so thrilled and yes. You've been amazing when i was pregnant. Couldn't sleep and still. Sometimes i can't sleep. I'll tax you and it's just you become such a kind friend but you also were really amazing for me after my dad died and i know you love him in the similar way that i mean not the exact same way i do but i know how much you loved him and also has been something that has really brought us together so i just want to thank you for your friendship and i think really represent arizona and the most incredible way. I think you're a perfect person to represent arizona. I just think that you're an independent thinker. I think you're a maverick. I think that you represent your constituents while on arizona's are really hard to pin down. Were free thinkers. It's an interesting state and You know i really am proud to be representing even though you're democrat and i'm republican and god forbid we can support each other. What's the best part about being the senator from arizona. Well first of all megan thanks for talking for a long time. Because whenever you mentioned your dad i get a little so ended time to recover. So thank you for that. You know. I think the greatest thing about being the senator from arizona is there is on a part like i am a native of arizona. I love that state so much. I just it's my home. And i can't imagine living anywhere else and i can't imagine representing my state and or any other state in any other way and so i think my favorite thing is that arizonans regardless of political party are first and foremost independent thinkers and we just believe what we believe. Unabashedly unafraid. we do we think is right even if we have to stand alone and we just. We don't really mind what other people think of what other people are doing. 'cause we're really focused on doing what we think is right and getting to represent a state. That is so much in line with my own. Values really is an honor every day. we also have the best food. So those are the things senator You wrote an op. Ed for the washington post in june where. He spoke about bipartisan cooperation. And not wanting to eliminate the filibuster saying that. Doing so could lead to quote temporary victories destined to be reversed unquote. How do you change the minds of your colleagues who think the opposite is true. I'm so glad that you brought this issue up because as you all know i'm in the middle of Trying to land the plane on our bipartisan infrastructure. Package which we hope to complete very soon this week actually in the senate and i think that this exercise passing a one trillion dollar piece of legislation the most historic investment in our lifetimes in infrastructure demonstrates the value of bipartisan. Action and part of my motivation in working on this legislation in addition to wanting to ensure that arizona in america is globally competitive and ready to fight for our future. It's also an attempt to show not just our country but the world that democracy works and that we can work together. In a bipartisan way. We can't compromise to find solutions. And so the reason we start with that discussion is because i believe this very exercise demonstrates why it's so important to maintain the sixty vote threshold in the united states. Senate power changes back and forth between hands and so every couple of years. The republicans will be in charge and the democrats will be in charge and they have while we share many of the same values the two parties do have some very different ideas of what those policies should look like as a reflection of their values. And when you eliminate the sixty vote threshold in the united states senate benue just simply say that. Whoever's in charge just runs roughshod over the minorities opinion and that could lead to these wild ricochet of movement back and forth between policies. And that's really bad for our country. It's bad for our constituents. It's bad for our economy and it. Also i think doesn't reflect the values of most americans who want a governing body. That is sensible. That is willing to compromise. And that's willing to work hard to find these solutions to the naughty challenges that we face. So i think that's kind of a short synopsis. I could talk about this all day. But we don't have that kind of time. But i think you know just as common sense. Say stay right there. Don't go anywhere because we're gonna come back with. War was senator kirsten cinema. We'll be right back. Hey we're back with senator. Kirsten cinema sunny has the question. Thank you senator. I hear you about independent thinking. That's that's one thing but ignoring history is another philip. Filibuster has a deep racial history. And it's really the favorite taw being used by racists for quite some time it was used to store the civil rights act of nineteen sixty four in the nineteen thirties. Democrats actually used to kill anti lynching legislation which we still have trouble passing today and it's us being used by the republican party today to suppress the voting rights of black people. So my question to you is in opposing the filibuster. You say that you support voting rights and voting rights. So what would you say to those like me who argue that. Protecting voting rights in this country is much more important than protecting a filibuster. That's a relic of the jim. Crow era well. The first thing. I wanted to point out. Is that the filibuster itself as a tool and like any tool. It has neither a positive negative value on its own. It's how we utilize it that gives it value and so whether using the filibuster for good to stop legislation. that's not helpful like we. Democrats did in the senate last year when there is an attempt to pass police reform legislation that was inadequate and that did not serve the needs of our country enough or whether it's being used by republicans to stop democratic priorities. People seem to not like the filibuster when they're the ones who want to pass the legislation but when we're in the minority we being either democrats or republicans. We use the filibuster a lot to force dialogue to bring people together and to make changes. So for instance when we senate democrats were in the minority. Just last year we used the filibuster many many times including once in the fall to stop legislation around kobe relief that was inadequate. And because we use the filibuster to stop that legislation that was inadequate the group came together and we actually created a bipartisan piece of code legislation. We passed in december much more substantial substantial much more bipartisan and met the needs that our country had at that moment so again i would argue. A tool itself is neither negative or positive. It's how it's used. And i wanna make sure that we retain that tool so that in the future if there were an attempt to get rid of things that are very important to me personally like women's health care decisions or protections for the lgbtq community or protections clean water and clean air I would wanna make sure we have.

There is a growing divide in america between those who will get vaccinated and those who will not and it's causing tension within families and friendships and jennifer aniston recently said that she's cut ties with friends who are antibac- sers. Now i think we all all had to make these choices but sarah. How does that fall for you. Why i actually totally get it right now. We talk about how divided the country is. And i can't control the strangers. I don't know and whether they get it or countable for whether they have or not but when it comes to my inner circle and exposing to myself and my children in my home i absolutely have a say and so i don't think it would mean the end of the friendship forever but right now in the near term. We need to take a beat right. Megan would you end the friendship over this. What am i. I think that My circle of friends is so tight and close That it would be too hard to give up a friendship. I might not socialize with them in closed quarters inside for a long time. But i wouldn't and a friendship. Life is too short to start ending friendships and ruining families over politics at least for me. Yeah joint is this deal breaker for you. When she says jennifer says she's losing friends. I presume she doesn't mean lisa who dro- david schwimmer. She's talking about other friends. Okay got it got it. Yeah his deal. None of all of my friends vaccinated. I don't have any friends who are thinking that way. But i have a couple of relatives like i said on yesterday's show there's a wedding coming up and not everybody is going to be vaccinated there including the bride. So i'm going to have to think that through very carefully and i don't. I don't think it's about politics. I think it's about health. It's about health and trying to save yourself and not die so yeah i don't i don't know anybody practically in my circle who's not vaccinated. They all are right sunny. How about you yeah. I would have to agree with joy. My my dearest and closest friends know the loss that we suffered from the pandemic many of them came up to me and said you know because of what your family has been through in the transparency of your loss we are going to get vaccinated so i surround myself and i'm surrounded with love and honor and and certainly those that are vaccinated. I will say i have had. I've learned a lot about certain people during this pandemic and i've had discussions with people that in my view have exhibited really reckless behavior. Not wearing masks going indoors partying with large groups of people and things like that. And i have changed some of my friendships because of it. I think it's just too important because public health is is a collaborative effort. And if you have someone in my view that is so selfish as to not consider the lives of their fellow american and their fellow man. That's just not something that i'm interested in maintaining a friendship. With what about you. I i have a lot of folks on not direct family to me but you know family to others who are constantly. Have this conversation with but they are. These are the folks who reading that craziness on the internet. You know who think that if you drink upside down that you won't get. I mean crazy stuff and all you say from across the room is that's not gonna work and i don't want you to defined out on your deathbed and you now it's worked in small increments you just never know so you just keep trying trying from a distance triumph from however because you don't as as angry as you get with people you don't wish this on anyone know it is just it's a it's a crappy awful way ago and you don't wish it on anybody so we don't so we want everybody to get vaccinated not because of our politics not because because we all have family and little kids in our lives and what you are not doing affects what everyone else is doing. S China relations. We were talking earlier on the program about to the U. S placing new restrictions on companies like Xiaomi and and see nook. You think this is going to continue under the Biden administration, or will they redefine some of these restrictions? You know, I no one knows the answer to that. But I would expect there would be less capital markets nationalism because it's been very scarce under the Trump administration. But I expect them to have a more nuanced policy where they will cooperate where they need to cooperate and compete fiercely where they need to compete, but not necessarily cut off their capital markets knows Tol spite their face. We also are expecting from the bottom administration. A lot more focus on SG. What do you looking at in that space? Absolutely. Um, I think that what we can see is regulatory changes is actually not expensive for the administration's not adding that much to the deficit signing the Paris agreement or its substitute. Ah, lot of the emerging markets have signed the appearance. Paris agreements and so many of Kartika portfolio companies are now looking at their carbon footprints, how to reduce them. We help them with Brian said. He s G. There's a lot of excitement around that their employees are very excited about having companies that have a purpose in the world and serve a mission. So I'm very bullish on ESPN emerging market. Is there anything that you're concerned about? That could really upend your entire thesis. Absolutely, um the singing bee at the barbecue could be inflation. Um, inflation could lead the U. S to raise rates. Now we just heard from Jay Powell that doesn't want to take her tantrum, but anything that strengthens the U. S dollar and reverses that secular trends down. Could be a negative for the E M story. And so it all comes back to the will there be inflation or will there be no inflation debate? You're still looking at the potential of further weakness in the dollar on the on the longer term trend for 2021. Is that right? Absolutely I I can see that we might be in a multiyear, secular down trend for the U. S. D. We were talking the other day about the unbelievable strength in the offshore Chinese Yuan and the extent to which the PBOC is sending a signal to markets by Setting a weaker fixed over the last two days. Are you worried about the potential for like, I don't want to say necessarily a currency war but micromanaging of currencies in the way that the market is is trying to value them. I'm not terribly concerned. We always will build in the cushion for some sort of FX depreciation over our 12 year history. We have seen some years when it I the way that strengthening from your ears. We've had a weakening and overall it's about a 3% per year weakening, but we can overcome that quite easily with good stock selection and having upside for the stocks. So day to day movements. I'm not so concerned it is possible that you wan just on his own fundamentals could strengthen And I'm not surprised that the Chinese government would want to manage that because They do manage that basket. When it comes to we're talking your broader market themes. But when it comes to sexual themes or company themes as well, we know 2020 was so heavily dominated by the big tech players. What are you looking at? In terms of, I guess disruptors from am market says some of the perhaps a smaller companies that are definitely gaining more traction, particularly when you look at Southeast Asia. Uh, yes, I mean, one area that is really going gangbusters is intact. We're looking at in tech companies, including like payment companies who are competing against cash, not competing against big banks that competing against cash. We're talking about companies that are basically creating their own markets. And so I think there's a lot of opportunity all over the E. M. So Southeast Asia. We're seeing that Egypt has a payment startup. It's still only a 1.7 billion market cap company so very reasonable. One of the largest online banks in the world is only $7 billion market cap in Russia created by really brilliant entrepreneur, Um and we're seeing this innovation everywhere, and this is models that are quite different from what you see in the developed world..
