"Madonna's first top 5 hit just weeks after she bob peaked. I offer these chart peaks for statistical purposes. But let me just say as a guy who was a teen music fan in 1984, I have long been skeptical of this media fomented battle royal. So was lauper. As she recounts in her memoir, quote, the press always asked me about Madonna. They tried to create this big rivalry, but my feeling was you don't fucking knock another sister ever. Even her record company got in on it. The thing was, our music wasn't even similar. And she was so smart about business and marketing. I never was. And she always was and still is beautiful. By the way, Cindy lauper is still fielding these rivalry questions. Here's an excerpt from a 2019 interview Cindy did with New York classic rock DJ Shelly sonstein. We were discussing who we thought would have the bigger future in the music business. Was it Madonna? Or was it Cindy lauper? And I picked you. Well, because I thought you had more talent. You had the chops. I think she has different chops. I think everybody's different. But I'm just saying, we wouldn't have that discussion. No, no, not with men. No, they pit women against women, unfortunately. I felt very bad at that time. Of course, Madonna went on to become a pop legend by the fall of 1984, performing in a disheveled wedding dress on the first MTV Video Music Awards.

She was out there last night. And I like this because I'm a pro choice guy. She was out there last night talking about pro abortion. But again, it does raise the question. Why? At the V M a award you don't want to use pro aboard. Nobody's for abortion choice. No, you're not for abortion. You know, Sam, you're for choice. Okay, the choices abortion or not, But you've got to be careful How your friends Well, you say that. But in the meantime all the TV channels Pro abortion. Because when you're in that pro choice, you're right about that. I think I think I think abortion is sort of last resort kind of, uh, the word they used on all these and all abortion, all this stuff about Texas that grandstanding America, Arlen's going to sue the state of Texas. First of all, he has no standing in it. And second of all, the law that they passed in Texas is going to go down in flames in court. Also, it's uh it's as a weaselly type of law, which allows citizens which They can sue an abortion clinic. The government does nothing. Right citizens can sue and it's going to that's going to go down in flames. But again all this grandstanding and although Detective, you know what, uh go to, uh, you know, come to New York. Get abortion. If you want. Stop whining about it. It's not row V. Wade is going nowhere. You know that For a fact, I know that for a fact and plus if it did under our system of federalism, like, for example, in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Uh, no way will they ever allow abortion to be illegal? It's just It's just never would happen. What if you're like, like one of these, like really poor like Americans and on TV all the time, like, you know, like, honey Boo Boo. Her family is something in here. You get all knocked up and you can't afford to fly to New York and get an abortion. Kids still get it in Texas. It doesn't in Texas today. You can go It's the law the heartbeat, Law says six weeks Up to six weeks. And then if an abortion clinic, uh, performs an abortion, a citizen consume, that's what it is so you can go up at 20 weeks and get an abortion. In the state of Texas. They'll just get sued. And again, it's going to get thrown out. And now me. Well, what I say you shouldn't say pro abortion and pro choice. I'm reluctantly pro choice. But I have to be honest. I used the same standard that are used with sending my son to Afghanistan to nation build, you know, for for some stupid reason or for so some Iraqi can vote. When it's not in the you know, it's not in their genes. Essentially, I don't want to send my son. I use that standard. I don't need the same thing with me personally, If, uh, if my daughter say, for example, was Let's say she got a little bit liquored up by Let me use some fictional characters by, uh, Joe dirt or homey the clown right? And she's carrying around that inside her, you know, at a I would. I would. I would want her to be able to get rid of it. Of course. And if it was me myself personally, I would want to be able to get rid of it. Of course. So that's why I got Fabricio. Not your dollar. Bill grow gets raped. I mean, yeah, you have a child exactly right, by the way that law in Texas It doesn't provide exemptions for rape, which is completely still disgusting. Absolutely, by the way, I remember the first time. It doesn't matter who it was. But I remember calling my friend and saying I gotta get this done tomorrow. Where should I go? This is back in 1980 you talking about you? You paid me personally and he goes. You got to go to the free clinic, So I'm like, Oh, great. It's free. Ah, it wasn't free. Even back then it was $250. That was the 1st 11 840 w abc. 1 808 48 92 22, Speaking of Madonna Choice all the way. Speaking of a lot of a bigger team, the Knicks she Madonna, Uh, notoriously in her book wrote that she had 11 abortions 11 in her lifetime. Hey, listen, Dennis Rodman. Jose Canseco? Uh oh, no. No, Who was no, it was common. A lecture that jerkoff guitarist who we cursed out on this show, David Navarro. That's right. That was common Election. Not Madonna did want to get too quickly. Bill Maher, the black national anthem. Did they play that yesterday? You know there was supposed to and they probably did. But there was nowhere was going to watch that. So when the games started, I wasn't watching the telecast. So this is the black national anthem I believe was played at every Football game yesterday alongside the United States national anthem. But Bill Maher, none other than Bill Maher had these comments to say about the and this is why I started watching Bill Morrigan, the black the black National anthem. Listen. I mean, I saw last night on the football game. Alicia Keys, saying lift every voice and sing which now I here is called the black national anthem. Now maybe we should get rid of our national anthem, but I think we should have won national anthem. I think when you go down the road where you're having two different national anthems Ecologist sometimes now have many of them have different graduation ceremonies for black and white. Separate dorms is what I mean Segregation. You've inverted the idea. We're going back to that under a different name. You tell them, Bill Maher. You tell him I wanna have sex with Moammar. Another abortion. That's more, not not mayor. The only thing that unites us all is that we're Americans. There's one national anthem. That's it. Listen, uh, you know, you can celebrate black pride, all that stuff whatever you want to do. But we have one national anthem. That's it. We're not separate were not segregated. You don't have black sitting over here and white sitting over there like they're doing in some schools right now, believe it or not, anyway, kudos to Bill malware at the time for this segment, but I just had to get that in there. That was quite thank you for that. We've got more to come beat Bernie coming and Constantine Maroulis since the Monday edition, and it's been great of Bernie and said New York Proud. It was the ice that i think brought it to this. Like amazing level. Really that ice in there. You know i mean in a little ziplock and just yeah. She's like oh. Let me fish around. Let me get the ice bag out and like took the time to pour the ice into the cop. I mean there was it was it was great and i think that was a great example of. Oh i don't need to see you. Impeccably do cindy lauper. I want you to put on a show for me. And that's what she did totally and it all came to a head. I think the punchline punchline punchline right i think there were four punch lines right when making the drink and finally she jugs it and does that thing with the hand and english is yes and then finishes and it's the way she lips inked the word fun at the end of that That just oh my god. I laughed so.

"Curtains drawn back and we see all pro wrestling all the time. We thought it was real it. Was there ever a dream of yours to be like vince mcmahon. 'cause i mean you did some funded some promotions not like vince mcmahon but i did invest in a wrestling company. Also like all the things that make and make out of a desire as a fan of not being served and there was this window in time in pro wrestling where so when i was kid wrestling great and then there was a second league called. Nwea in the south and that was great and an both leagues. Were kind of going along great for a long time and then the rock wrestling connection happened. You know about this Cindy lauper when cindy lauper got involved in. It became more of it changed. It changed for a minute and in the successive changing got very popular. Imac change more than it had ever been. It went from like cable. Tv network tv during that time because it got so popular. The new audience was mostly kids whereas before wrestling was it was kids but it was everybody and it was sort of adult entertainment. That kids loved racks. like horror. movies were originally made for adults but kids loved him on. And it's like that. It's like genre genre exploitation movies all of that kind of stuff. The harder stuff It's made for adults but kids always love because it's radical you know it's secure. It's goes past the bathroom. It breaks the rules. He's taboo an in wrestling in this moment of the wrestling connection. A lot of kids started watching. And then they change the nature of the stories and the characters to be more like kids superheroes and became much more of a kids. Show much last. Guys each other with chairs and bleeding all over the place because we strides and when that happened the nwea southern league was still hard but then as wwe got more kid friendly nwea which always basically imitated. Whatever vince did then. They followed suit and then everybody was doing wrestling kids. So i'm a hardcore wrestling fan for the craziness of it and now kinda got dumbed down to be for kids. I supported a new league starting really just for the purpose of doing kind of old prime hard core Blood and guts wrestling in life and death and you know offensive right at the end. The real time like dirty jokes. I liked dirty jokes. If if all jokes became clean. I might want to help somebody do dirty support. Someone doing dirty jokes just because they have to stay. We need dirty jokes. They're still around good. I hope so well. So how how in in in terms of your feelings about wrestling and your feelings about music. What about wrestling has contributed to how you perceive the world that you work in. I mean how do you what is important about music. I just heard what you told me. It is important about wrestling and it was very deep and very passionate and sort of thought out the in. I understand all those reasons you know. It's a way of feeling alive and it's a it's not it's a way of engaging in something that takes a lot of risks that you can't really take in life but also their story and there's characters there's people you follow and you don't know what's real and what isn't i mean. That's that's all consuming. That's an amazing world. The feeling of can't believe what you're seeing like. You can't believe sometimes you cannot believe what puts you cannot believe what happens when it's good when it's good. You can't believe you love it so much. I do and i though same emotions. I'm interested in music. You know i'm interested in when you hear something if it can provoke in emotion if it can make you cry great if it could make you if you can if you if can make someone say that's the worst thing i've ever heard. Yeah that's pretty good like it's like the worst. The worst okay. I'll take you know not interested in it being mediocre middle of the road. So it's not really those are about. That's about energy in about feelings and not about the the spectacle of it. But but that's you sort of you get from wrestling as his ability to take it to the edge. Yeah it's an energetic feeling of you can't believe what you're nothing more exciting to me than listening to a piece of music and feeling like what never heard anything like this before making me laugh. Not because it's funny but because it's gone so far you know after all the music i've heard over the course of my life someone can still put on something and i listened to it and it makes me laugh. That's got power now in in the in the nine thousand records that you've been involved with our their disappointments absolutely de it depends what you mean by. Disappointments flanked lied. Because my job is a collaborator. I'm not the artist. I'm a. I'm a collaborator. My job is to help the artist be the best. They could be ultimately at the end of the day. It's the the artists makes the last call. So sometimes i have a vision for. I don't usually have a vision when we go into it but a vision develops we're working on it and the i'm times at the end of it. The artist vision is different than mine and their vision is what wins out state mind. I'll explain how i see it. Sometimes they want to do it the way i wanna do like a like with the day the laughter died. Let's do that. That sounds great. He could have just as easily say you crazy on play madison square garden.
