"And I think that that is another reason why university based communities are attractive to me. Because I personally, I like to think that there's always something new to learn and open a door and find out what's in there. And from the perspective that these residents will be very, very diverse for sure. Very diverse background. We already talked about lots of socioeconomic difference. But they come in knowing that there's a commonality among them. So it's not going to be strange to say, I mean, just today I sent out an email, there was a Latin jazz concert in honor of Cinco de Mayo. And it was, you know, we're starting to have some in person things on campus that are open to the public. So even though we're not built, it's a college campus. And there was a whole group of them that I saw the emails flying around that they were meeting to go to this senior exhibition of Latin jazz students. So that's the kind of thing that I think really defines who the resident is at a university based community. Yeah, that's a great that's a great description. So the desire to learn doesn't cut off at any specific age that I love that I love that. Yeah, and the cognitive stimulation enhancement the continued learning and engaging and stretching are thinking process a little bit. That's so beneficial. For myself, I want to set up electronic drums a year ago. I've never played it exactly. Did I just thought I wanted because I love to watch good drummers. So these are electronic. That means you can wear a headset that nobody can hear you. As opposed to acoustic drums where your neighbors might come knocking on your door and say, what's that bracket? I'm necessarily as excited about your new hobby. But that's right, not quite as excited if this house is very patient. But electronically and it's great. I love it. But it's that notion of continuing to use the expression open new doors and see what's on the other side of that door. Yeah, that's great. That's great. You know, I'll just expand a little bit just to say, too, that the curious thing that happens at these campus environments, though, is that, you know, I think that because the other question that you get is, well, who wants to move there, but then what students want to go to campus where a lot of older adults have just moved in. And I think it takes about one semester has been my experience for both constituencies to realize, wow, this is a great symbiotic relationship. The older adults that maybe think they have a thing or two to teach and they certainly do a wealth of lifetime experience to share. They also benefit from that brand new perspective of an entirely different generation that maybe in an auditing class taking the same topic and seeing it through wildly different lenses. And that dynamic and conversation is interesting to people that want to learn. That's one thing. But the second thing is students immediately immediately are savvy and pick up that wow. This is an entire group of professional capital. This is like a walking living breathing career development center that just got dropped into the center of campus. So whether it's medicine or music or social worker education, I can guarantee there's someone that is either still working and close to retirement or was wildly successful and recently retired and boy do they want to share that knowledge and even sometimes those connections. So after my career and working in university based communities,.

"Welcome to May 5th, 2022 in the national day calendar. Today we celebrate Mexican independence and reaching for the stars. In 1862, France tried to take over Mexico. The country had defaulted on loan payments to France and the European nation was so angry that it sent troops to Mexico to resolve things by force. Normally, the United States would have intervened, but it was in the midst of Civil War, and France took advantage of the situation as the French army marched towards Mexico City. It had to pass through the town of puebla. There, a small force of Mexican soldiers, though badly outnumbered, beat the French and sent them running back to the coast. Cinco de Mayo celebrates this victory and the fiercely Independent Spirit of our southern neighbor, veba Mexico. If you were alive on this day in 1961 to watch the freedom 7 space capsule at its 15 minute orbit, chances are good, you can still feel the excitement of that moment. Astronaut Alan shepherd is regarded as a hero today, and no matter your age or how you spend your time on earth, one truth remains constant. Space inspires. Today, we celebrate the pioneers like shepherd and many others who were willing to risk it all and go first. We know that our kids will reach new frontiers as they stand on the shoulders of these giants. A national astronaut day reach for the stars and support the programs that teach the next generation of space explorers who already know that the sky is the limit. Believe it or not, I was not alive in 1961. What? Me neither, but you still feel the excitement, don't you? Oh yeah, did you watch the movie the right stuff? Yeah, it's good stuff, right? I know. I totally remember watching the moon landing. You do? Oh, absolutely. I remember it as well. I was in my mom's tummy. I was 5. I managed to be here. I'm Marlo Anderson. "I don't know maybe they did that on purpose. To yeah aligning lime changes. This think lines get it would've changed my rating on it as well but i mean if you just taste any think about this the after flavor i get a little bit of like pineapple or something. There's some or something in there that could be one of the profile esters from the yeast that are being used or one of the sugars that you're using to to make this beer so all right. Well let's get into. Let's get into the rating here On the vanja. Serie colorado chad. Where are you going to this I'm going to go a little lower than the last one. I still think. I could sit and drink quite a few these on the beach. I'm going to go with seven seven five narrow I'm going to do the same. I i i like this one. But it's not near as good as has modell. oh and and other more classical kind of mexican logger. So i'm going to seven seven five years i'm going to go seven five on this one Same thing i mean. It's now like you said the lime. I think changes my perspective on the saline lime pushes mind an eight. Maybe i think it's got some of those same. They're not flaws but characteristics of the corona of things like that. Do you throw lime in there. And it covers some of that up as it sits right now seven five and it is not brew talk approved one more time why we just saved that one This has been beer. "Against the happy where we're doing mexican lagers here Tonight we're going. We're gonna do some history and pairings and stuff like that. I think i can handle the the pairings if you'd like me to her tacos and burritos. Hey good answer nail it. let's go here. I can't these came from mexico. That's my history on them. Start first with pacifico this is a pretty generic one. It no okay. any sense. We're ex pants and pacifico surveys pacifico This is one that a lot of people. I mean this is a pretty generic one right. This is going to have it. Four point four percent. Abc on the. So it's the perfect lights. It's definitely the perfect kind of beer. You wanna have out there. You don't want something so heavy that you have one in your done especially if you're sitting in hot sun and warm weather heavy alcohol will just make you just crash because you wanna be sweating it out as fast as you put it in exactly. You're pretty much rehydrating dehydrate with this shirt. And it's light and refreshing. You know it's just what you want. I mean it's champagne colored or apple juice. Keller whatever you want i mean. It's very very clear. Clear very pale as wonderful aroma. Definitely this is a logger where they come from and which is actually austria. but that's okay but Yeah no this one has been wonderful flavor. There's a little bit of after bite to it that you can tell from. The corn typically used in the vienna loggers. that are mexican style. Are you guys. Corn tortilla flour tortillas. Yes depends. I like you at one really. Yeah by. i'm not a big fan of corn tortillas. Really yeah flowers. If they're made well they're they're wonderful. Yeah the fresh still warm fresh and still warm. Just amazing what's the dish that you would use corn tortillas on tacos for sure eat joey fajitas once in a while really flower at the corn. I like the flower the flower anyhow. Flower britos for me. Yeah oh god do. That's the way too much corn. If you're gonna be okay we got. We got the Talk about a history. Then if you're going to judge me by saying that oath mexican beers are mexico. Just you know we finish rest So go ahead. What's a little bit because there are some payments brewers in germany and austria who decided in the eighteen hundreds to go and find out what other people were doing. In other countries one of them was anton dreher and he went over to england learned how to brew lagers and stuff like that and using new equipment. The new industrial revolution equipment brought that back to vienna from and started brewing. What they call the vienna lager Then when mexico and central america and south america were settled. There was an awful lot of german ex patch. Ex-pats that we're moving to those countries and they brought that style with them and you can tell it's nice and light. It works really well on those hot beaches right and the styles duck so And then it became sort of the mexican lager when in fact it's actually be a newsweek came from right. Well let's let's get into this first reading here on pacifico This is definitely. I mean my goodness his one that six pack. You could probably drink without a problem while you're mowing the lawn or something like that. It's very very light. Very light But let's Thoughts i will start with you. Don't you don't have radio just any final thoughts on it. I think this is a good one. Not one that i drink a whole awful lot but it's one that come across every once in a while and yeah. I think it's pretty good. I agree this one really does go down. Nice and smooth. It has that beautiful aroma that you expect from a mexican logger that wonderful light refreshing flavour. It doesn't leave you filled up and It's it's a perfect fit. Yeah it's it's almost a little too late. You know if that makes sense it's there's not a whole lot there i mean and i get. That's kind of the trend of the Of the style that we're doing but even for some of these other ones it just it really is. It's like a little different flavored water. When when you get to it and met at four point four percent it certainly shows it now. I definitely do so this lighter beer and stuff like that when it comes to spicy foods that just mean you can drink more of to cool off every time you take a bite out of your also or what a little bit but i think sometimes the hot profile in the flavor profile kind of helps take away that spiciness or a real is okay so Yeah it's it's a balancing act that you want. The hot profile is really light with these bureau. The otherwise it'd be overpowering your you'd end up with completely different style so light hop somewhat of a little bit of a corn ish cat flavored for sure. Well let's get into the ratings pacifico here Chat wow guess. I brought it in. I was just gonna resort back to just have new good. I on everything I am going to. i think it's solid. I'm going seven five on this. A little higher. I think is an eight. I like it. And i actually liked pacifico quite a bit so i'm going to go eight to five now right with all that added up. It is not burdock uproot time. Well it is good. It's just not good enough to be brutal uproot cards. Chad's evening here. We're in the middle of beer. Thirty s assistant coaches barely not approved. Let's move over to delo. Which i'm so tired modell advertises so hard inside of u. of c. fights having watching ufc a lot. And i'm so sick of their advertising huge sponsor of it he drives me crazy sidebar. This is modell special. This is their golden full flavored pills. Ner style lager with the clean crisp finish brewed in mexico They even make sure to tell you that it's important at the top so apparently if you didn't know that mexico was not the united states would be important so This one is four point. Four percent with one hundred and forty-three calories per glass. So this is a. This is a mexican bud light. I mean that's that's take that first draft wrong with it. Just this is what i just. I think we were talking about off air. But this is what i drink when i go to mexico really on the beach. This is my kind of my go-to beard drink at the resorts and stuff like it. It's a little smoother than the pacific has More mouth feel on it too little sweeter to notice. It doesn't have that kind of What he wanted to call it. A skunk after flavor that the did This one is. It's really good. Yeah i think it's got more of a nose on it too. Like i think that aroma is more prevalent with this one. And it's a little different still but i think it's a i think it's pretty solid now. We're talk more about this. But they've got dole's.

So it's an a gob eight worm and meskel which is just you know the purest raw form of of that kind of drink just seems to be a perfect fit for. Let's put the worm back in the juice that we made from the plant. Now have you ever eat the worm at the bottom of it to you but yeah see. I don't know i don't. Is it crunchy. No no. it's always slimy swallow. I don't chew it you. Don't i knew somebody who had braces on and rubbed. It was just a marketing gimmick to get stupid american college kids to buy more tequila and you know look there dare you to buy that and drink it. Yeah it's it's never bought it. I didn't follow that marketing. It's like a prize at the bottom of the barrel but it's not prize. It's a nasty worm. Oh you get to have the worm. That's a pri- entered the stories. I mean eat the worm and he's starting to loosen aiding and now i think he. I think he tried some right before you get to. That were made. Your has a different thing. That's the saying this is the same thing so like with absent the green fairy. It's just sort of like a myth associated with okay so like eat the worm and it's the prize at the bottom of the meskel so there you go yeah That's not for me. I'm not a. I'm not big to heal the guy i will tell you. Stop by the shine shop here in greeley. That just opened up on tenth and they had an garvey tequila. And i'd normally. I have to have a lime. If i'm doing tequila and i tried it in it was i didn't have to have a lie and lime nothing. It was phenomenal. And so i highly recommend you guys check it out For any of the those mixed cocktails of for its veteran owned and things like that really cool dude in there. But i just when i find a new spot that you know i'd like to checkout. It's it's pretty cool. And i think we were planning on at breaking news of these guys are here as well. I think we're planning on doing a special show out there at some point this month. It'd be well so we're going to have a cup. We're going to have a bunch going because we got the blues jams coming up that we're going to be associated with. I'm telling them their schedule right now. So we've got to get to a mighty river at some point this month. We've got the shine shop that they're gonna barbeque smoked barbecue now me along with their their cocktails and things like that and then the blues jam as well. But that's not till two. That's june fifth. I believe But they're going to be joining us here in in a week or two to to discuss what's going on with the blues. Yeah it's a. It's a bruise and blues or blues and brews thank. That's what it was. Yeah yeah. I think they're going to do in that together and they're gonna have their cigar. You were there. Two years ago right it was two years ago. Two years ago. I think it was the first year they had done it. And it was great little event and for the first year at a great attendance and really was something they could build on. So yeah. i'm excited. They're doing it again. Yeah i was too out there at at island grove where it will be held and it's in association with some of the same people who are who are key players with the stampede and things like that but i know there's a lot.

You not celebrating or remembering you know so it was just another day to me you know and at work. You know the different jobs i've had people would always come to me. Hey are you going to celebrate it. segal the maya independence day and know depending on on what mood i was in and when they got me on all out either say oh you know it's not it's not the mexican independence day. You know the the sixteenth of september mexican independence day. you know i don't i don't celebrate that because it's not a it's not a holiday people. Don't take the day off in mexico. Like i was telling you about my cousins that i was telling us that they and their he casting good emmanuel myo. You're wrong yeah. Hey the pueblo. All but i ended the okay. I remember studying that in in history but what was that about. I remember the name. Tell me again. You know like my cousins. They i had had to tell them about it. You know it just because it's not that big of a deal you know over there so i mean about it you know so if you think about it all were our people were we kind of created this monster right. If you a body right we we look backwards or we look into history for inspiration right drink some rights movement and then that became popular celebration that morphed into a popular drunk fest so very are screaming all no but also you know i. It falls in may so sorry towards the end of the school year. The teachers are very liberal relaxed. You know it's hurting. Wanted in september where they have other grading and every now. I know why the theory from your teacher makes sense. Yeah at he was a history teacher to as i saw maybe so now now that were grown man with kids in grandchildren. Have y'all had your kind of discussions hobby like your dad told me about the significance of it. Have you know right. Now as you're bringing it on you. I was gonna say that i hear is the difference my kids. They didn't do a little mexican dense like we that we did. You know that that a that that thanks. Yeah no no no. Let let remembering that. Let's see what happens. This my which is what next week or something like that. you know. it's like right around the corner and So i actually. I'm gonna ask my kids to see if they even know what cinco de mayo is. Isn't it funny. How this podcast. We talk about these discussions issues in prompts us as positive. Oh shit maybe we should talk about these. Yeah allow topics right. These topics helps us. Remind us who we are culturally and what we want to pass onto our kid. Yeah and also it also. Sometimes they like man. I'm slacking you know like let like like what's wrong with me. I should like right. When you're asking me i go. I a record co-winner my kids and ask them if they know what cinco de mayo is. They're not going to know. I mean they'll probably say it's a mexican celebration or some. Did you have an part part of it. You know with the school thing hobby. I think part of it is maybe Educational systems at least here in california. Probably more culturally aware and sensitive and probably. Don't have those types of Events at schools anymore because once again you know it's it's not an independence day you know. It's it's a historically significant day but as far as culturally you know it's you know it isn't like fourth of july or something like that you know and And maybe part you know for you because your kids are in in junior high in. Yeah maybe their schools because if they're not public schools they probably don't celebrate if it's a private school at the private school. Yeah so they probably don't celebrate those things and i didn't go to private schools but they probably wouldn't celebrate that you know but like with without on At least here in livermore Or you know livermore dating a single the mile celebration or festivities or anything like that at the school that he went to and the school that he went to was. I don't wanna say predominantly latino but there. There was a large latino community there because we adam enrolled in a in a dual immersion program where he was learning spanish and english. Because you know we wanted to make sure that he he knew he knows. Spanish and english knows how to read it right it and speaking it but But yeah no you know I don't remember that that experience for for him at schools but he does know he doesn't look -nificant because his mom who's may he you know made sure that he knows you know he. He knew and he knows what siegel. The maiyo is and mexican independence. Day isn't all that. And you know i just. You know cooperated on that as well. What about you also. I'm like hobby. I asked that question for the same reason for my own. Kind of thinking was like shoot man. I didn't think about kind of we talked last year about your dealer of metals read. Didn't give any thought to how am. How do i break down to kids. But i need to just like secret a mile and at some point i think i want to break it down a little bit. At least just like they did right. Who said by number thyroid battle as the french so at i think yeah at some point but yeah seven four years old so as much as i can share about know. So that's that's what i'm trying. Yeah and so like even that song single their minds yo lake..

"The bars you know they have the specials and all that stuff you know since like the commodification americanization and cultural appropriation of Of mexican history and irish history. You know Talking about Saint patrick's day but But yeah i mean that's basically what it would it has evolved devolved into from like what you were talking about it all how it was It was a a former love for the finals. Young and burgeoning chicano movement a sense of pride and something to be able to hold onto would dignity and say this is part of our culture and somewhere along the line it becomes Lake i mentioned earlier in just you know a a weekend sponsored by coors you know and you know obviously chicanos. Don't drink cores. Because of what course did teach was back in the in the seventies But you know and we lost the essence of of of the battle you know and the significance of taking back our land. You know because that's what was it was it was a may ghana's indigenous peoples kicking out Europeans you know the colonizers the predators And and really end and re capturing regaining our land our culture our history. Our blood at now. Mike you say growing up you know it's It's just another excuse to get all bello and we don't even know away. We're getting better for. I know right. I mean it you know what a all in all honesty. Alpine will get a twelve pack and barbecue for secretly mile. But what point did you remain a hobby over. Did you guys figured oh shoot. It's not independence day and it's not just a not report you say okay. This is a battle battle. I mean i. I mean i was. I was young when my father told me though the historic meaning behind it. You know because Actually as far as i remember. I always knew what it was. Because when we did those which can kindergarden that we had to do. The little dancing and Put mexican flags all over and like my dad like you know. I mean of course being a mexican and everything. He's like to go to event where there was mexican flags and everything you know And then he well he. He told us so. That's why as far as i remember. I always remember that that that it was la. La la de puebla. Like like i was always is still about that. That notion gumbo solos francis and stuff like that that that they that they came with a big army. There's just a puny little country we're gonna kick their ass easy and it was an easy you know and And so for me. I kind of i always knew it but I knew that a lot of people like sometimes i. I didn't get when people were talking about like you know. Let them have their discussion. You know it's like sometimes. I don't really want to like get in other people's discussions and stuff like that but Yeah luckily i. I had that background knowledge in a force you to get up in this discussion aruba gets political historian on joined the manage to so we're not helping to give political if that's where it takes us. But anyway ruben. What point of age or experience did you feel like both should okay. I've had you're wrong all these years. It's actually it wasn't until my twenties men. Yeah until i started reading about mexican history because once again part of my my elementary experience. Elementary school experience was in in texas. And texas is a very very different world compared to compared to los angeles or california and more specifically los angeles more specifically east los angeles. You know there was. There was nothing at all that we can talk to about anything mexican in texas. You know So very anti mexican state you know and not just like state is in a state of the country but a state of mind as well you know and in west la mile. Metrics over there. You know we didn't have cynical. The mouth celebrations For whatever reasons So you know when. I was in When i was at east los you know those already in high school. So you know we didn't have anything in high school And you know something. I never really bothered to ask. All i knew was from as a cello. I always for me. That was a day to get drunk. Not meet to get drunk but everyone around me was just a day weekend. Celebrate you know celebrating meaning to get drunk. It wasn't until I went to elect you know. And i started. You know took it upon myself to learn about mexican history. In chicanos that that i began to realize. Oh that's that's what it is. Independence day you know I knew it as know being a A battle that we one or that one but he know the significance of it. You know because that wasn't my thing in history wasn't my thing In they when i found out about it. Well it's as always i get pissed off funk is what it's been about man you know it's another form of a press in man always angry. Was he wearing red. Dude you know and and you know and and similar to havi only once. I found out what it was about. You know and. I see people just like saint patrick's day you know exactly saint patrick's as they say it's an excuse to go and get drunk all right so be it. But i stopped participating in that. "How Did you stumble into advocacy? I was very sure that I was going into what I think of his direct service like that was my thing. I was aiming towards it. I I could picture myself in an office. Like seeing clients of some sort and helping them with the stuff. That's why I volunteered at the legal clinic. When I was in graduate school I found myself a job with archdiocese at Chicago right after graduate school and that was just very sure that that was my path and I ended up until literally got intervened got actually kind of way intervened. It's a very strange story. So I'm I'm working as an organizer for It's called Perez Community Services and the sizes of Chicago and an immigration law passes and because I have been working as a lowly volunteer in a legal clinic in graduate school. I knew a tiny bit about this law and my boss's boss was the guy responsible for building up the legalization operation to help. Undocumented people become legal residents so I was asking him questions just because I was curious about like how you GonNa do this because there was a way that law worked the application period started by law on May Fifth Congress decided to open it on Cinco de Mayo. You know for symbolic reasons and so they had to be ready to start on that date weather. The regulations were ready whether the agency was ready so I had questions for him in this poor man had the cardinal breathing down his neck. Saying we have to do this. Half of the Catholics in Chicago are are Hispanic and this is our moment to show our flock that we are with them and he so he called me into his office and said the Lord sent me a dream and I want you to lead this legalization effort. I was twenty four hours of my first job out of graduate. School did not have illegal immoral. No I've been like a paralegal way in the bowels of this little organization. I'm very good at collating papers. You'll right And I have no management experience at all and I also don't have mentors so like an idiot. I take this job because I cared about what I cared about. What was happening. I don't believe the Lord spoke to Father Ruby. I think he was desperate But I threw myself into it and it was an amazing challenging experience and we crushed it but I learned a lot about myself. I learned a lot about the Catholic church. Some of which I wish I didn't know and I learned I suck at direct service. I mean my program did really well there were. There was a universe of people who qualified under the law in a lot of people who didn't qualify under the law. And the thing that I couldn't do is like go of the people that we had to say no to because they didn't qualify. I lost sleep. I agonized and I realized people who are good at this are able to live with the reality of what they can and can't do and they were able to test themselves often. Get up every morning and do it. I wasn't so I this thing. I thought I was supposed to be good at that. I believed in. I discovered. I wasn't good at it. I wasn't cut out for it. Turns out on an advocate and I'm a structural reform and I just didn't know until I tried to do what I thought I was meant to do and failed and I I tell that story all the time because I think it's important for people to know it's okay to try something discover. It's not what you cut out for it. That's how you one of the ways that you land where you're supposed to let you have this realization. You also realize it requires you to move to Washington. Dc to really do you want. Do I love the fact that part of your resistance to moving. Dc was just that you're introverted and didn't WANNA make new friend turned not be more sympathetic to that but then you end up NCR for two decades when you first get there. Lobbying is the type of loving you. Reduce very much defined by men totally. Yes I was the only woman in the room all the time. And so how did you have to personally adapt to meet that moment? So there is a section. The book called Sharp Elbows and other tools and it refers to the fact. I'm not actually sharp elbows person but there was literally a point at which the group of men that I was working with that were sort of coalition partners we were at congressional markup where they literally mark up a piece of legislation. And when it's over everybody stands up. In the guys stood in a circle they formed a little huddle to like compare notes. And do all the things you do afterwards which are important and I couldn't get in the huddle and I was frustrated. Went back to my boss and complained and he said he who is my height. Said you just gotTa just elbow you weigh-in that's like it's not personal. He said they're not but you're short. You're a woman you're Kinda knew so elbow one of them and say could you let me in here and be fine and I I did. I had to do that the next time. And I only had to do it once But that kind of stuff happened all the time. I was in a board meeting where I was ten years younger than everybody. The only woman the only let the And they're making decisions about board officers and the head of the organization pipes up and says up secretary while. I guess that Cecilia should do that job. And my first thought was oh come on. Are you kidding me so but what I remember about those things from thirty years ago now is that I didn't feel I could I am now I think? Why did I feel like I couldn't do that? I thought the thought that somebody else said. If I were giving advice to my younger self now it would be you can say it. Of course you can say it And to you know give yourself the confidence to recognize that I like. I didn't have a voice in my head saying you. This is a group working on immigration. And you're the only Hispanic person in this room. A vet gives you standing. You can either say I'm the only Latin and that gives me twice as much room to say what I need to say or the only one here so I have no cover. And that's what makes us nervous exactly and over and over again from that point all the way through my timer. The White House. It's not just the I might not have cover. It's also the and I don't WanNa be the gadfly that is always pushing everybody so much that the next time I when my mouth? They're all gonna just roll their eyes and not listen. That's the other thing that I feel like my you know. My radar is always going for because hall point of being in those places to be effective and so I also feel like I was aware of not overstating my case so as not to get to the place where nobody.
