We've got Mitch Golding here for what is undoubtedly my favorite day of the year, and that is relaying the results of me picking all 272 games on the NFL calendar. I have Mitch here because he is the editor that actually has to fact check the most ridiculous thing on our content calendar. I don't think it's even close. And also to do all of the tiebreakers. So I should ask you first, Mitch, how are you feeling about all of this? I'm great. I love the NFL tiebreakers. This is me in my element. I wish I could just spend my entire year doing nothing but NFL tiebreakers. I think I'd be very good at the, you know, the basically Steve Kornacki after one of the recent election cycles, they just started letting him do it on Sunday Night Football. He comes on the pregame show and the halftime show. I could do that job. Now, I love Steve Kornacki, and so I'm not trying I'm not coming for his job and I'm not trying to say that he is bad at his job, but I think that's like a role for me that I could easily handle. Just put me on there talking about tiebreakers. Oh, I love it. But Connor, I have to ask you, is this really one of your favorite days of the year? Because that's a classic thing that you say now. Let's go behind the curtain. We are taping on Wednesday and this will be revealed Thursday. I know you. You will be a ball of stress. You will be getting requests for radio shows in cities where you said their team is going to go 5 and 12. You're going to have fans yelling at you. I think you're going to be a little bit stressed tomorrow. So just try to remember right now this feeling of how happy you claim to be and try to just keep that in mind tomorrow when when people start slinging their arrows at you. You're right, Mitch. I think that the day when, you know, all radio stations want to have you on to either praise your pick or be skeptical of your pick or fight your pick. I famously got into sort of a verbal fisticuffs with a Cincinnati radio host before the year that they went to the Super Bowl. I had them projected for four wins. And I think I said over and over on the air, find me more than four wins on that schedule. I think Joe Burrow did that and then some. He got him. And but since then, you know, come full circle and everybody in the playoffs alone, which is why if you're a loyal listener to the podcast, you know, I became a Bengals fan. So it's all good. It all. Yeah. Oh, we buried the lead. Connor, how was your first week as a Bengals fan? It was great. Although if anyone listened to the podcast last week, I was between the Bengals and the Ravens. And so my wife and I watched the Ravens commanders preseason game where the streak was broken. And I got I got kind of emotional. I mean, you can read what I wrote about it and but I thought this was a very big thing. And I was very standing on the table ish for John Harbaugh and the Ravens in that moment. But I had to get that out of the back of my head. They're division rivals. And just because I almost picked them doesn't mean that I can't root against them. And so full steam ahead. We're just waiting for news on Joe Burrow like everybody else. Mitch. Yeah, it's interesting. Now everything we read of yours will be through the lens of is he being a biased fan here or is he being objective? And I don't know. I don't know. We'll find out. At least now your biases are out in the open for for all to know. I think it's going to be a fun bit to just fully jump from. I just picked this team yesterday to where have you been? I'm a dyed in the wool Bengals fan. I love Skyline Chili. Have you ever had Skyline Chili? I have. I like Skyline Chili. I know it's controversial. I like it. I'm I'm I'm a supporter. What's your like what's your workup? Do you do the whole thing? I don't. I think so. So I have not had it in a long time. So I couldn't tell you the details, but I well, let me try to remember. I think it's like five ways. I like all this, all the stuff on it. It's possible that it has gotten more ridiculous since I've been there and they're putting on like absolutely crazy numbers of toppings just for Instagram or whatever. But last I remember it was the the spaghetti, the chili, the cheese, the onions. There might have been a fifth one. The sort of I feel like I went there for the first time, right before sort of it became a thing on the Internet that people liked to complain about or argue about or say was disgusting or whatever. And so I don't know, there may have been changes in the years since, but but whatever the classic like as of the year 2010 way is the way that I've had it with with all the stuff available to me in that time. Nice. I yacked in a Skyline bathroom once because I just couldn't. The mountains of cheese. I don't like cheese, but I had a friend order it for me. And so I think if I had to do it again, I would do the spaghetti, the chili and the onions and maybe that would be something I could maybe that be something I could stomach and walk away from. I'm not going to disparage Skyline chili because my roommate used to make a really good Skyline chili dip in college. So I think if I could bring that back somehow, I'm pro Skyline. There's nothing quite like it anyway. So no, no, no, no. Don't anyway. Me. I have more Skyline chili takes. Let me give you a pro podcast is brought to you by Skyline. By the way, I have had, I have been to a Skyline chili establishment and I have had it there in the restaurant. I also, I have been to one Cincinnati reds game at, I think it was called great American ballpark at the time and it has some other new stupid corporate name now, but I ordered it at the reds game and you know, at the restaurant it comes on a plate and you're right. It's piled high with all that cheese. At the baseball game, it came in like a plastic Tupperware kind of situation with a lid and they closed the lid so that you could walk with it to your seat and that process of closing the lid. It got so hot in there that all of the cheese melted and it was excellent that cause you're right. It's the, the cheese restaurant. It's like straight out of the bag, just like the, you know, cold shredded cheese where it's the little pieces, but, but uh, in the Tupperware melted all this hot gooey cheese all over everything else I thought was a, it was a great way to enjoy it. So I have no idea if it still comes like that. This could all be different. I think that was back in maybe 2007 so we're, we're talking about a long time ago, uh, me remembering this chili that I had, uh, but loved it at the ballpark with the melted cheese. It's still great American ballpark by the way. Oh, interesting. Which is a, which so great American is an insurance company. Uh, so it is a company name, however, it's just called the great, like if you called it the great American ballpark, I feel like that's solid. Um, that's going to go down a, uh, that's going to go down a rabbit hole, but all right, I'm glad we landed there at skyline chili. Obviously as big of a bangles fan as I am, I'm going to need to learn to stomach that. I'm going to find the way that I like it. "The optimism is nearly as there. But i mean i see sort of another preseason where can nation is optimistic and pretty much every other. Nhl market doesn't think much of their team fair. It's it's the. It's the big splash thing right. You know they went out. They obviously made a big trade Picked up obviously the high profile named alva rex. and let's not sleep on connor garland. But it's still a bet on ecm larson being better than he's been in recent years i don't think they're trading for norris trophy defenseman but they're they're they're trading for player they believe can be better. It's a big bet right but it's splashy it's a name has been talked about for awhile. overhauling i mean overhauling. If you will the defense if you wanna call it that but at the same time you know tucker pullman travis hammock are going to be asked to do a lot more than i think is really what they're capable of that to me in. The end is going to be where the bulk of the story. The season lies. I mean along with ken thatcher. Damn co keep it keep going. I mean you had you had a pretty good rookie season. Not an amazing rookie. Season had a really good stretch but some really bad stretches this past season came. He put it all together. Be that consistent guy. You know fifty five sixty nights this year Does your whole still have what they need from your to be that solid backup goaltender. I mean that's been a story here for for so long with the exception really. I suppose the cory schneider years and and you know briefly. I guess you know various points. When eddie lack had a good run vine ryan miller when jacob from i showed up i suppose but really the you know the the struggles of the backup. Goalie was such a story for so long here You know you wonder if that'll be back and they should be able to to score in bunches but at the same time. There's a lot of pressure on that defense and you know. I think the outside view is that you know to go back to your point. This defense isn't good. Nothing even with Hughes returning to some of the form he had they're going to have some challenges Which we saw plenty of last year. This was not a good defense team last year. Obviously the mix is a bit different But let's not forget that even in nineteen twenty when they were sort of lauded for improving playing up tempo hockey. They weren't great in their own end. Either i'm really not looking forward to the analysis of all ackman larson all season long because the minute us criticize him once this year be like guys never gave him a chance. I am not looking for the case. guarantee you. it'll be. I mean if you're talking about pointing out a mistake on opening night in a win yeah sure but you know i i think you know if it becomes clear that he's not the guy he used to be. I mean i think he's a very intelligent fan base..

"Hyped and You know certainly wasn't the kind of character that they were claiming they wanted to bring into this which brings us to the athletics opinion piece on public confidence in the front office that connects ranked twenty ninth in terms of fan confidence in the front office. And this comes. After a pretty decent off season you know decent. I think the the The worst you would describe it. I think they're staunch defenders of the off season would save is an amazing off season and not too far removed from the bubble performance which vaulted them if you can believe it. Twenty fifth at that point Prior to this last season it has been mired sort of in the bottom third of the league here for some time and Just tells you it's going gonna be a long road out of the out of the twenties at the at the very worst here for the office. I'm sorry what's the athletic. Is it a website. Thank you great rivals. No worth worthwhile exercise. All these interesting to take Take the tempting the public temperature. And i i kind of appreciate their approach. It you know. I it was. It was interesting to kind of go through it and see how some of the results play out and you know from from top to bottom. I think there are lessons. One of which of course yes know. Perception is very down on them and for good reason. This is a team that has struggled to make the playoffs. For instance getting credit for drafting developing. Which is an interesting concept when you think about you know they still haven't hit. There's a lot of potential. There's still it not a lot. There's still some potential for them to hit on some of the later picks But mostly it's been good draft in that they hit on a bunch of first rounders after Twenty seven with besser and pederson and hughes especially but denko as well. And you know there's a couple of rathbone looks like he could be a guy and obviously hopeful on a couple of others. The idea developed means that you've done well through tilting team. They certainly have landed players in the nhl from the h. l. team but it's there are too many foreign outright success stories But you know. I mean in the and also the other lessons from this list. I thought was interesting. You'll cohi- for instance florida. I think he jumped twenty two spots or something like that which to me. I mean bill zito getting all this credit. But that's one of those wants to be also case where i think the real story here is that we tend to forget. I think and i think this is an important thing or perhaps don't even understand. That managers can do a lot more to hurt their team than they can't help their team. And you know. i think. The case is clear. And i've documented in the past. "So you know you can reinvent yourself you go do something like that exactly I know you don't regret being a cincinnati reds. You'd love it there and are just so proud of the longer you've had there. In such an historic franchise going back to the eighteen hundreds. It's very cool. Spot to be for and i know you do feel love from canadians. But i think it's it's unequivocal. The argument can be made. If you were a yankee. Ajay one of the the marquee markets. That you'd be probably on every lunchbox in canada. How much love do you feel. You feel it but do you. Do you feel the overwhelming support of canada as you probably should as an mvp and maybe a couple of time mvp by the time your career is over. Here's my take on that. So somebody asked me about. Larry walker and how i felt about him as a player and i said honestly i don't know anything about him as a player. I knew about him once. I started understanding the dynamics of how difficult what he did. Was you know but as a sixteen year old fourteen year old eighteen year old. I knew there was a player in colorado. That was canadian. That is canadian That was playing fantastic baseball. But he wasn't on you know he wasn't on at the time. I don't know if there's was roger sports now. I don't remember what channel it was on. I do remember. I do remember the commercials though apple auto glass but Black and decker. I remember all those all those commercials but I don't remember having the opportunity to watch the great larry walker and and so as far as How my my you know my connection with canadians and and being you know on the lunchboxes etc it's it's nearly impossible because baseball such a re regional sport if i was winning most valuable players in the nfl which is more of a National sport and and we get to watch that on on sundays. Mondays thursdays in In canada and that's different you know if you're if you're if you know for example mahomes or brady are canadian. We're going crazy about that. Because the national sport but it's hard to be a fan of athletics player mariners player maybe not mariners but athletics player rangers player. No matter how well they play it's still regional so My expectations are really very very low. and i. I don't as far as feeling love. That's not really realistic. That's not really realistic so i go back home. Almost i'm i'm rarely if ever recognized But i get that up for when i'm in cincinnati because everywhere i go i get recognized and even in the mid even in the mid west. I mean all through the midwest. It's an honor to be get the hallows and autograph request and picture question and and catching up with people. Because they're they. I'm inside of that general area..

It's that simple fifteen years in cincinnati as their first baseman and national league. Mvp and he's a contender again. Here's our conversation with joey votto with cincinnati reds first baseman. Joey votto one of two canadians with two thousand hits in the major leagues and accomplished just last week joy. Thanks for making time appreciate it. Thank you both for having me. We saw the ovation. We you got. We saw the Recognition that you gave back to the crowd upon two thousand hits wanted to media. I've been in one uniform in one city. Mine tire major league career. I was raised through the reds minor league system as well drafted by them in two thousand and two and You know there's there's moments meaningful moments go by very very quickly and if you don't catch him as a major leaguer the they'll slip through your hands and that was one of those moments that it may have lasted tier three minutes but was very very memorable. I was able to connect with with the city. That means a great deal to me. That's been so good to me. I was. I was able to do it in a uniform. That's familiar that feels like home and You know i. I'm very proud to have i. Didn't i wasn't trying to time it this way but Get my two thousand hit in cincinnati in front of the home crowd. Saved it up good for you. The career has been a along an amazing one for you. And it just seems to me that you've seemingly savored it even more and you've always been accessible doing interviews like this wrote your career but it seems like in the last handful of years particular you're really stopping and smelling the roses in your career. It really savoring every moment. Enjoying what you do playing baseball and also interacting with the fans and everything. It was a moment that you can remember where you made a conscious effort to to enjoy yourself more or to be present more just seems like it seems like you're really there. Yeah yeah. I think. I've i've i've made Whether it's an intentional effort. Or it's just i can't help it To exclusively.
