Security often referred to as the two most exciting minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby is also a marquee social event days. A fanfare Parties parade, a massive firework show. Ah, a lot of that is gone this year due to the global pandemic and even more notable None of 155,000 plus fans in the grandstands a revision Churchill Downs, the home of the Derby made recently. That's not all That's different this year. Louisville just marked 100 consecutive days of protest against racism and police violence and demonstrators plan to make Derby 101 days. But while the horse racing industry doesn't often weigh in on social justice issues, Harrington says, Now is not the time for silence in this town, you know, which is still waiting on bated breath for what's gonna happen with You know Briana Taylor and the officers involved can't just be big hats in pretty dresses. You have to say and do something to acknowledge the situation. Churchill Downs did issue a statement Thursday afternoon, acknowledging how black jockeys once dominated the race, but were then excluded and acknowledging the pain community members feel right now as they wait for the state attorney general and FBI to conclude their investigation into the police, killing a Briana Taylor. So, she says, as she faces arrest for obstructing the highway by protesting in the streets. But I for Darby, too inconvenient me and block off street, not let me pass that fine. Drake, who is black, recently wrote a letter to the CEO asking for some self reflection of the institutions, lack of black representation and a lack of in her opinion, compassion. This is the institution that can redeem itself and they need to start by asking himself. How can we be better neighbors? So this Adjacent community and to the very one way she thinks they could do better is by dumping a tradition, she says, is rooted in racism.

Weekend Stakes Preview Presented by NYRA Bets
"The victory ride kicks off the stakes action here at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon grade three early in the caught has just the feel of five phillies. GOING TO GO Six and a half furlongs as for the three year old's warning line favors one francs. Rock Cat Hall of Famer Bill Will Give Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez a leg up and this phillies done very little wrong on her career. She's three for seven. With four second-place finishes ran second in a couple of graded stakes, including the grade one spin away up at Saratoga last year last seen winning a third level allowance optional claimer. She uses stakes. Winner took the any limit kick off three year old season three starts back. and. Probably the only reason that this race isn't later in the card is that it's a five Horsfield and Franks? Rakhat is three to five on the morning line, and she may be the the loan speed in race, so she's going to be tough to beat at three to five, but that's a pretty short price, considering there some pretty good up and coming phillies near now I think number four center. I'll I'm going to give her another shot for. For Chad Brown and Joel Rosario Sheila Great Getting Her Maiden Win Gulfstream Park, when bet down to three to five at the end of March then came back in a tough allowance race at Churchill downs where she was really over bet, she was three to five that day against another very impressive maiden winner of this one for Steve Asmussen in casual casual ran a great race that day center I'll had all sorts of problems. She didn't break that well. She had trouble during the race, and she was just really never in at any point. I think it's a racy can kind of draw a line through? If she runs closer to the way she did and her debut. I think she's the one that could give Franks rock cat. The biggest problem Franks rocket will probably get the lead I would think Rosario would have center I'll sitting justin behind her and seeing if they can outgun into the line going six and a half furlongs. With you I'm going to take a shot with center. Rile planner. If? When I plan! Early took five tomorrow I will use both Franks rocket and center, but I'll tell you what I think. You can make a case also for up in smoke was undefeated and sprints. She's four five and a career. Lone blemish came when George Weaver tries to stretch her out Hollywood wildcat. Go at Gulfstream Park. She's raced exclusively of Gulfstream, in fact, steady diet once. Once a month February march April may June now. She gets a race in July. Here over Big Sandy, she wanted the game face overboard last time out for weaver Rod Ortiz Junior. Who wrote her in her debut against fellow Florida breads down at Gulfstream Park's in the climb back aboard for the first time. Since that day looks, you'll need a little help up front if Franks, rockets able to set an easy pace I. She's going to be very very tough. I think Senator I'll be the first one to come calling. Those are the two up in smoke. If you're looking to three deep, I don't think you need to center for Bobby and I race number three goes as the great three six and a half for a long victory ride go to the end of the card. Eleven race card like I said earlier, and the final four races make up an all stakes pick four, and it starts in reasoning with the greed three poker. Flat Mile on the turf for many years. This was the fourth of July staple. On the naira calendar here it is now as part of a super five stakes card. In, the poker though. On the widener, so they come out of that shoot. On the clubhouse turn we get a field of eight entered for the turf as a main track. Only it's all relevant with the way. The weather's been here. I would imagine you know there's supposed to be some rain. We're recording the show Friday afternoon supposed to be some rains rather day on Friday and into the evening. I can't imagine it enough to take this off the turf, so let's say it will be a field of eight.

"Which you know which was over in France and in France a mile and an eighth is probably a little bit closer to an American mile and a quarter And then he also wanted. Milen quarter race over in France In his best American-run was also at ten for in the Derby. So He's definitely going to appreciate the distance however that the weird thing about the Mile and a quarter on the grass Starting point is it's downhill from from the break it's downhill and we've seen a lot of times in raisins like that forces you don't usually Who WHEN GET STIFF MY OWN QUARTER OUT OF TRACK? Belmont are able to to carry that Day at the SPA is probably the biggest one I can think of even in the Philly in mirror going back to last year horse like era. Desa PROBABLY BETTER. Meyler bill because of that Santa Anita Start is able to get a bit of a solid run-up to kind of save some energy that does point horse like the six original air who At a mile and an eighth one and allowance by five lengths at Santa Anita last time out and does have Umberto Rissoli who is writing the standing needed. Per Course as good as has in the history of Santa Anita. You've been on fire there Since since coming here in at the beginning of this year so I think Even the top two united in rock emperor or the most proven They're also not the best horse in the world and you have a horse like originator. Who's been running some pretty good races? getting a little bit more distance which might just be Something he needs. He's run probably best races. The longer you've been allowed to go Good connections right.

"In stakes races at ease. Really just getting beat by horses either. Get better tips than or Either get better tricks that can were probably just better on the day. Herodotus being one of them but Majora sorry is a board obviously can't go wrong to El Rosarito and He always comes running late no matter the pace in front of himself. Pick slate on per second for me in third. I will say billy. That's a his. His grassroots is obviously much better than that lasts. Dirt race in I think the miles probably going to be his destiny for the rest of his career tote if he can you know a good stockton trip? He'll be there late no matter what and the final race ligaments that we're going to get to on the Churchill downs card. Wasn't that win again? Eighty-five Derby points for grabs fifty for the winner in mention start. This does bring back the return of Max Field You know I think everyone like I mentioned the beginning. Everyone's pretty much under the especially with how poorly that Breeders Cup juvenile field. Turn out. Pretty sure it's a universal opinion that Max `field would have won that race by a lot of lengths and basically would have had the rest of field begging for mercy in that You know but he. He is off a layoff but aside from that he's been working good lot sign show. That McAfee is going to be in store for big year here. The one problem with him in years that there is not much speed. The only real speed factor in this race would be the number six New York traffic now. New York traffic did run a really good race in Louisiana Derby last at two run second but that race was kind of merry go round race that feature the one to going on the lead the entire time so I I could see a situation where he gets where maccesfield get stuck in a situation not having a paste run into that also factors into another horse major fed who was second in one in the division of that was won by modernist and was four last. Start out in the Louisiana Derby. He did not have a pace to run into at all and he close really nice to get four. That was really impressive for for him to close from last to fourth in that race with having zero pace to run into. He's another one that is dependent on a good pace trip And if it doesn't pan out which there's a possibility it could not fan out then there would definitely be problems with him there but you know maximum is GonNa be the big horse in here There's some other horse in here that I know. Eric wants to mention but Chino. I can't go against Max `field because of how impressive he was last year. The two year old The one concern to concerns a layoff and the pace but I'm going to swallow Lavenham. Swallow the pace and I'm going to go with McAfee here. Just because I know that he has all the talent in the world and I've always said Makhdoom probably in in the conversation to be with I guess heart top four. Tis The lost an adult Charlotte authentic. I think he's in that I guess you could make in the five and that's your top.

"Really nice races up in New York and I think Dan jurgens starting to really figure out what this horse needs though. He's a six year old with a lot of experience hard so the next. We'RE GOING TO SKIP OVER THE MATT. Win and go on and talk about the war chant. We'll come back and do some solid horses in this race. That headline out. Billy Batts is the first one on billy. Batts was second in the Breeders Cup turf behind structure last year. You also have field pass. Who in his most recent start won the Jeff Ruby? A TURF WAY. He's get back on the grass of her son. Like I've mentioned in the past horses that can run on those synthetic another twist of fate. I know those. Those are two completely different sources. Another twist of fate always struck me as grass roots and he ran a really nice race synthetic Golden Gate and I would not be surprised in here to see Fueled passing ran that nice race in Jeffrey. Become back here and run really well in a race like the war champ again. This is another another wide. Open race lottery routing. There's a lot of shots you can take in here. You know this another type of research you look at it and you say. I don't know who I'm going to go with. Because the favourite probably is definitely has a potential to get beat. So lot of routes. You can go very very wide open. Like I mentioned and Eric Probably GonNa have a long shot to go within here. I'll take one of those two Billy batts or pass but again you know I I make mention here longshot. Play take take a shot in here because this is definitely race it you take a shot in. I take favorites a lot. More than the average handicapper does saw that. That's just my two cents on. That is a wide open race like an obviously wide.

"All right so we're back this week on racing on episode number sixty two. We got a lot of stuff to get to on this show so much sakes action this weekend. They're like I mentioned Gulfstream kind of filled up the calendar last weekend. But this is the first real weekend where everything gets back into it but I just want to. We got a lot of stuff to get to. So we're going to very briefly. Just take a look back at some of the some races down Gulfstream and also talk about the couple of allowance racists from Churchill. This weekend that are we're talking about as well as hit on the desert stormer out at Santa Anita so just to recap from last weekend Friday Saturday Sunday done at Gulfstream on Friday. Total a shape back in the winter circle in that race Double Crown on Saturday when the war stakes. Jakarta won the powder break and musical. Romance went to Lady's Island and then finally the Sunday silence on Sunday was won by just whistle so like I mentioned we wanted to just get through these a really quickly but we will just hit one one thing until the shape. She's back in the winter. Circle runs while golf stream in lower level stakes. So you know. We picked against her both of US air. Eric has been the king of Ping against a toll shape but just briefly mention Yoshi in races like this really hard racist like this Gulfstream. It's really hard to doubt her. She's got to do it at some other. Some other level Whether it's in another graded stakes race or at another track which That still remains to be seen whether or not she does that. So that's just the one comment that we have from this weekend and maybe also the other thing is don't Right off the fact that green like Oh might in fact the horse wants to go longer. that those are the takeaways that I had from this weekend. Also worth mentioning the powder. Break Him off the turf. So that's why got stormy did not run this weekend. So that race kind of lost a lot of its luster there. So that's my take wisdom. This weekend I'll let Eric. I Know Eric Mall just one thing quickly on God stormy before we move onto some of the other races from this weekend forgot storming race came off the turf so obviously he was running. Took a lot of the town away. We also saw the to Chad Brown horses. Scratch from that spot We'll see wherever they decided to come back. Churchill probably as a couple race we could see.

"Living at home and then all of a sudden we're asked to stay in hotel somewhere you know you you know it's got the sane and and I will say this. He doesn't have John Hancock chasing them down the stretch either. He doesn't have guys coming in from the farm in our already right. He's got guys like Michael. Yates routh Knicks. One over auto hiring del and Aaron. Del does very well. They're very good. They prep those horses in extensive fashion at the farm. They get them righty they. Bring them up and give them the two works to give the gauge boom. They go so he's actually facing stiffer competition and he has to do more sources down in Florida. Then he really wants to where he could train with more comfortable here at King and be able to do what he needed to do. So it's a combination of thing. I don't think anything's changed other than the competition. The training the training the trainers colony and three. Just not being at home turf way to leg-up he doesn't have keeneland know the leg up. He did have a couple of goes down here. He's got a few here. That been training up to five eighths which could be ready. Which is a big difference. He's been at Gulfstream Park West. Going three eight out of the gate which I don't even put any substance in any of those times from jet Gulfstream Park West. But he he. I don't think he can do what he wants to do. Because of the no lay six and the inability of being at home and facing tougher trainers speeding a tough trainers The only other one individually mentioned among the two year olds but Steve Asmussen The last five years in the May June portion of the churchill racing. He has more than twice the number of two year old maiden special weight. Starters is any other trainer and incredible with all those numbers actually a positive our Y So not even over Beth given his name recognition. And how well he does. Where two year olds Any patterns handicappers can look out for and in Steve bringing a two year old runner to the maiden special weight ranks in terms of where the better ones might train or when he likes to work etc. Well first of all these statistics you have for the Churchill. Spring-summer me at least a spring part you can just tear up and throw in the trash because this is a year. This is your ear your twilight zone strikes. You know outpointed this podcast that yeah and blunt you just gotTa take that and throw it out now. Does he have a lot of two year at at Keeneland? Yeah he's got a couple of that have been training really well. Black Cop Brad Cox. Few over there that he's starting to set down really. So they're going five eighths. They're going they're going. They're five as what they need to do but I would be weary. I'd be Leery of ood finding SIS coming in with one worker to over Keelan and then running because I can guarantee you. Debt Steve. Asmussen has had a lot of his two year olds training down in And El Primero down at their private facility. I don't know if they would be shut down but they. I think it's Romero right. Yes Keith Mrs Place I would be. I would not be surprised if he's had a lot of them going down their training. And you don't see anything as far as time goes as a private facility. Come up get that get work that they need that pop out of the gate that easy half mile and boom and run so I would be looking at horses that make you go. Where's this source? Been kind of a little bit more because day might be coming in from somewhere fit and ready now. Lonestar. I don't believe Lone Star Ben Open. I don't believe Sam Houston's been opened. That's another one of his favorite to get US ready. I know Auckland hasn't had two year olds out there. I don't believe if they have. I got to look at the TAB and find out Fairgrounds may have had a couple but it would be very interesting to see where they up from and you kind of have to make it up as you go along in reality. Yeah that's I. Guess THE FLIP. A double edged sword. I A lot of conviction especially early intimate but on the other hand that type of uncertainty in the market might might create some better prices along the way including on him. I mean I guess I'm taking the idea that horseman who have proven themselves and different situations throughout their career. Might have an edge here. And certainly Steve with his father far-flung operation and seems to have a handle for for handling different variables whereas I don't know maybe other guys who were stuck here all winner might be more of a challenge to to have certain horses ready depending on the condition and also we've had weather here in Kentucky. I mean will. We have rain for like three days during the week. That kind of you know can wreck havoc The one thing I'll say is the biggest change in the mall and the biggest game. Changer is the no lasix? 'cause I think some guys after to really be careful how they train horses because if you get a two year old and you do too much too soon and they bleed on you now you gotta start all over and you gotta give him time and and and that can be that can be a real a real issue for some horsemen. You would probably see a lot. More horsemen scope and horses Lot more horsemen not bushy horses to do some of the things they need to do until the radio watching horse the other day. There was a Darren Miller that that worked really well. And I'm tr- Honorable Bow I think is his name and the one thing about it is first half mile. He went really fast on forty nine in his first half mile and then right away the next work Darren slow them down the fifty one. If I'm not mistaken and you really have to do that. And because the no lasix I think a lot of guys who worked fast usually will. WanNa wait an extra week. Give us a work and income in to erase a really changes. How you approach work in horses before you can put them all six and you can work them and s okay. Now you can't At least that's what I understand. I don't know if they can put them on Lasix for work and take them off licence when they run. I'm not sure if you can do that And be able to do those things so I it's a lot and I can tell you that none of the I don't care how good anybody is. None of them have had to deal with what we've had to deal so far. Sure this is definitely unchartered waters really for everyone concerned Before you say something else I need to do this. Forget I wanted to find out. How's your kids? I was Ej out everything going with them with all the all. The problems on the scares that we've had about Govan nineteen. Yeah now they've We've obviously kept pretty close to the vest here. We live in a pretty rural where out by skylight training center. So definitely don't need to get the kids out at all really in public and knock on wood Help healthy at home here. So we J. Haven't had any issues with him I actually for for better words because it makes us feel bad that we probably have to to limit how much he does even when things opened up a little bit But he's probably actually the healthiest. He's been in a while because he hasn't had any. You know all those germs that kids bring to school etc so thankfully jailing for for him which you know he's definitely in the vulnerable category with his pulmonary issues. So I appreciate you asking and you and your wife have done a phenomenal job. My hat goes off to you your dedication to that little boy. Skylight could be very interesting because it is a synthetic track. I believe have their training track. Yeah so that's that's that's my next question. I'm glad you brought that up. You reminded me That's that's a good facility And I when I get off the phone with you. I'm GONNA check and see if What the workout looks. Work routes look like from there. And see if there's something that we could use Coming up in the next at least the first couple of weeks right. Yeah now that they've been going. Tommy used to live next door to me and obviously know him anyway in Churchill. So I've I've been in touch throughout all this and it doesn't sound like they've had any hiccups out there. At all other than you know the usual if weather slowed things down it. Cetera via they've been full steam ahead Last question Churchill related got some big name jockeys coming in cast Castellano. Rosario Johnny v Three guys I'm sure you're familiar with well anyone's familiar with period but you obviously see a Lotta them down at Gulfstream. Big Naira names typically any thought to know what were their strengths might lie against this Churchill Colony and certainly. Churchill seems to be a track that does offer some home track advantage when you think of how well someone like Landry or barral More historically have done at that tracks verses others. How do you see these guys in here? What about the Ortiz? Brothers have not heard that they're making the trip I. I wouldn't be surprised if they're here. Mistakes day before Nyerere opens. But I don't believe they're planning on being here regularly. I thought I saw Jose Post something about coming to Kentucky. But listen this could be one of those colonies that can resemble the the old California With pink guide delahoussaye McCarron Stevens Robbi. Toro remember those those. I don't know if you're old enough to remember those particular Off Mike coming of age in the late nineties go on for some but those guys were absolutely amazing and just step back for a second and I'll fill in your question. I am going to handle the first couple of weeks as of Churchill is I would handle a del Mar meet when they opened up track three days before the meat started. I would handle the workouts. I would look at the the horses shipping. And of course you have to go. There won't be that many works or over the track at all Also I don't believe that there's any statistical advantage of being worked over the track and running over the draft from skeptical handicapper by Berry Metro. Dade actually did it And you know little shameless plug for Oldbury. But the other point is is that. When you're looking at the jockey colony you what I WANNA do is. I want to be able to see them ride for people that they don't usually ride for so for example if a grant foster or a jury or a will send. Alaska's doesn't ride for Wilkes or or he doesn't ride for jury and all of a sudden they're on those horses that tells me a little bit more than for example Johnny Velazquez writings for top Letcher. In on which pletcher would be another issue. He's going to have A. You're going to be able to ship in from Palm beach downs and run at Churchill in the first couple of weeks. I don't think so you have to be on the grounds right. I have not seen any restrictions to running. 'cause if you have to be on the grounds that would eliminate. I know I know they're expecting a lot of ship shipments from turf way. Okay Okay what. My my reason is is that you can set that up by simply ship in a horse in you already. Have Your groom. That's been tested at the Barnes. They ship into the barn. So you should be good as far as that's concerned and there would be that human traffic. That could cause a problem but I would look at horses like that. But if Johnny Velazquez shows up on other horse from a Barney doesn't usually get on and like the drewery or Wilkes or grand foster or or even a Greg Foley. You know. That's the kind of ones that I'm gonNA pay attention to. And of course they're gonNA fit in their class world class jockeys yeah no question about them fitting in and actually agree with you and this is anecdotally my power number run the numbers but I kind of thought by you know puts up..

Weekend Stakes Preview Presented by NYRA Bets
"I don't know how much derby influence this feels can have. But I'll tell you what I think. There are some really nice horses in here. That WanNa do this one turn mile and see if maybe one of them can Can Get the job done and move forward on that Derby trailing. Yeah Yeah I think it's a pretty nice field You know may not be an contain any derby contenders like you said but you know. I certainly think they're handful in here. Who are going to make this an entertaining an interesting race. The one I could see four or five of them winning. It's one where he'd probably end up having a spread but there were of them that I was kind of interested in You know what a horse that. I'm pretty fond of the Montauk traffic. I like young horses. Who are able to overcome adversity. And that's exactly what. This horse did First Time that was just Don't know what happened. She dwelt early and he did. And that was the end of it from the rail in the slop at Laurel you toss that race and and I mean he did exactly what you want a prospect to stretching out prospect to do he was able to sit able to make a run and pass runners and he was impressive in both of his next two wins the maiden when Downstairs in the and the Wingfield win. Also at seven eighths Settled inside didn't have a problem kicked out and And was able to run away from his competition. So I I don't think a mile Distance will be much of a problem for him. I just don't know how much upside he really has. You know. He's a gritty horse and He's one that I wanNA use but the one who I'M GONNA put on top of the three wars stop or I love the way that he improved. First Time in Blaker is just second time on dirt last time here at the The Mile trip here and act when I turned in a big beyer speed figure went right to the front And just kept on going. I think he is one that I want to keep an eye on moving forward. I think he'll be a decent prospect stretching out to to turn on the on the dirt and I'm GONNA give shops go right from his maiden win to Earning grade three status here in the In the Gotha. Yeah. I'm definitely. He's my topic as well. I'm a big fan of wall stopper. I liked what I saw from him. First Time Out Less time out rather when he got the meeting win. First Time blinkers. I should say now. That was a big effort. Thought Mischievous Alex might have some distance limitations. But it's hard to argue. How good he's been in his last two starts. Since his trainer John Service added the blinkers to his repertoire. I don't think six does without a chance from an ever Keough. Sauna current one turn mile. Got The goose ca pedigree on the bottom. I don't know how far this was gonna WanNa go with the one turn. Mile shouldn't be a problem and Necker island Friday he won going a mile in the slop. At Churchill downs just stopped got out running swell last time. The miles should be more to his Liking as he's already won distance and we'll see him. I under neath. I think it's wide open. I think war stopper shows up. They're all running the second money. I'm a big fan of his An of all these sources. I think him He's probably the one most likely to move on the Derby Trail. Regardless of what happens tomorrow. He can get beat tomorrow and maybe still move forward. I'd like to see him win But if he got beat I'd still think he can be contender. Might be the only one more stop for both of us in the grade. Three three hundred thousand dollar.
San Felipe, Santa Anita Handicap
"All right here we go. We're back on racing down today. Episode Number Fifty. We got a lot of stuff to get to today. Three fifty three fifty point preparations on the docket for this week. In one hundred Fifty Kentucky Derby points up for grabs three more horses will be on their way to Churchill. Downs weekend. There's also a bunch of other stakes around the country this weekend most notably the grade. Santa Anita Handicap. So we'll get to all those book. I we gotta get to the action from this past weekend in Saudi Arabia and the conversation is coming up at. I've seen it come up in multiple different areas is about the winner of the Saudi. Maximum Security You know that is probably the most the Kentucky Derby incident and you know. I'M NOT GONNA come on here and you know say that the Saudi Cup has anything to do with the decision that was made at Churchill. Downs or anything like that or argue that the disqualification now because he's one twenty million dollars. Saudi Cup shouldn't happen I I am not gonNA come on here. Make that argument I just off you know really looking at it. It's unfortunate that happened because maximum security is really just such a tough horse. And you know there's not enough good things you can say about maximum security and you know that raise really showed that maximum security is one of the best horses in the world and obviously right now. The leader of the pack in the United States for older horse. Right now and be really cool to see this horse competing for your old year and you know depending on where he goes from here. Obviously you know. They already mentioned that. He's not going to Dubai. But just where MAC security goes from. Here I'm excited to see that. And what he has in store you know. I'm sure Eric will have some of his things. Say about maximum security. But that's something not lost museum. Fortunate -ness of the disqualification at the Kentucky Derby. Because you know this is a really really fantastic horse for sure. I mean he's slowly and steadily starting to shed that tag of being the Horse Sector disqualified from the Kentucky Derby even though it will always remember that way. If you were to continue what you did last weekend easily going to be more remembered as one of the better horses heading into this decade in this early part of the century the obviously he's now ten million dollars in earnings in at this stage career. It's only getting go go higher. It'll be interesting to see where he gets brought back. I met in. Saratoga is kind of the midseason point. Four the connections there But honestly I think he's already cemented. His legacy added great horse. Just you know like cigar did way back when of when he won the inaugural Dubai World Cup. Maximum security is going to be able to say the same thing for the Saudi Cup where he'd be a really good group of Horses. I might add Definitely was not lighten any sense I think every horse for the most part Ranta form in the Saudi Cub ibew. Probably the biggest surprise people contend but definitely not be By a quarter of a lengthy Iran. Huge She's also in so many other horses from the race but maximum security Kind of a rough trip was definitely a target especially for teas on Mutual Gustavo. Louisa has had to get created down the stretch. But you work down in that. Horses has tons and tons of heart. I don't really know I've seen a horse. Who Does Not WanNa let him worse by like maximum security does. It's quite impressive. How this works bears down to every time he races and I just think I I I think we all know. He's in pre twenty twenty if he stays healthy yeah. That was another thing that I didn't quite get that opening. Bid Is the fact that you know. Maximum security did all that won the race while Iran Ortiz was basically writing interference. I made the comment to Eric Baxter. Excuse jokers still out there kind of looked like a NASCAR and now you can say all you want about. How you know. Probably wasn't the best rider. You didn't have good character of Iraqis. I thought it was a good strategy on his part to do what he could to be. Maximum security obviously probably definitely in this country If he would probably would have been disqualified but I thought it was good on his part to do his best to win. Win The race. And try to keep maximum-security away because I don't think I if you run that race normally maximum-security just goes by with the rules over there. They run category One rules which unlike in America the disqualification rules are if you preventing a worse from running their best race. You get disqualified. There is. That's worse when when you run interference or not so if mutual Gustavo Iraqis does dat but the horse wins by Lincoln half. It's not a problem. Give what was within the rules so it was a good ride? Bhai Iran It was definitely a little malicious. I certainly Jason Service not lease with IRA. Teaser was on the first things. He made a comment about after the race. In the in an interview shortly after On national television I might add But at the same time that's I mean the races aren't one you know like a track meet where you can necessarily go between the lane. This horse racing and that kind of stuff can fly to an extent maybe a little over the edge. I think especially when acting security job inside. I really started to hurt an inside but I was happy that I read never intentionally drew contact although he was doing some blocking like you said NASCAR ask He never intended to make contact which I think was probably the safest thing and when he when he knew the horses about to go by he kind of backed off on trying to get through so are running more interference so while maybe was maybe a little militias It definitely was good race riding on his part all right so that. That's it for this stuff with the Saudi Cup Stripping back over Cross sees out before we get to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks preparations that you want to highlight a Horse Zulu al folk who is turning into his own. You know I will highlight at about this point last year. This is were bricks and more bricks and mortar was not not saying that Zulu Alpha is going to be the next bricks mortar. Or anything like that. But you know he could do similar things to where it's very likely he's going to do similar things to what bricks and mortar didn't very likely that this is probably the top tier force in the United States. This year. You know at this point last year. Bricks and mortar was a great one Winnipeg World Cup turf and and then he had a great to race. I believe it was either at fairgrounds are one of the tracks Louisiana so to this point Zulu Alpha grade one winner Pegasus World Cup turf now. He's agreed to winner The Mac Ramadan down at Gulfstream. This past weekend. I think Zulu Alpha's in for a really strong really really strong two thousand twenty Keep your eye on him. Come for race like the turf classic the Kentucky Derby Undercard. That's where I would him go but not saying Zulu Alpha is an expert in order. But I'm not saying that he isn't either into Rena. Bricks and mortar was able to have consistent success last year is because all the worst is behind him weren't consistent. I mentioned on the show last week. That Group of forces that Zulu Alpa was facing. He actually used to be a part of that group they never were able to consistently put together strong back. That rates it's bricks. Mortar took it to a new level. Easily able to string together back Multiple consecutive good races in a row. And that's what God in his horse of the year title. And if these keep going the weather going is do. The wealth is going to be able to do the same thing last year Even though I was Kinda surprised after neier introduced the Turks Trinity Series that no horse really emerged from that as premier career force and to be chair. I mean we see that with Dirt horses as well on the on the Derby trail. They don't always shape out after the triple crown trail to be good and that kind of creates inconsistencies in the handicapped division like we saw maybe back Towards the end of maybe before the end of two thousand seventeen that you're got stronger as it went on but nevertheless China look into Alpa. Maybe like an expert in order. I wouldn't be surprised because once again the turf division isn't strong and If I'm going to throw one out there vitality is probably the best grass three year old male out there And I know. The connections are keen. Distract him out so he could be wanted content we know. He has loads talent. So at this point Zulu Alpha is primed at least stay home maleter force because so far. There are no challengers within a mile oven.
Who's the Champ?
"Bobby? A halt of the New York hot list is our first guest of two thousand twenty here on the gate now. The horse that won the Breeders Cup dirt bile beating Omaha beach is spun to run and he will be facing Omaha beach again in the Pegasus World Cup. The first major race of two thousand thousand twenty but maximum security will not be there and code of honor will not be there. Maximum security is waiting for Saudi Arabia. The world's richest race the Saudi Cup in February. It's very tempting to make this a political discussion. I'll only do it to the extent of saying with what's going on in the Middle East right now. How do you think that is going to impact whether trainers bring their horses over for the Saudi Cup and or the Dubai World Cup in March or maybe they take a look at that Pegasus again and say maybe we ought to just stay here that that's a very hard question to answer? Ah It's hard to understand how people feel I will say this. I am confident in saying that the people especially in Dubai. We're ruler of the country behind that I think they're going to bend over backwards to provide security and take care of the park I I would hope the same thing's going to happen in Saudi Arabia race and then just not become a outer tech or anyone but that is a question question that you just can't answer. I think it's very hard. It's an individual decision to a Lotta funny. I understand when people go play a lot of people who have no dog in the adviser to come up with answers of morally questions. And what they're gonNA do when not to you. Gary West was all set to run his voice Independence when it was nine nine billion dollar I. He was happy to take the fourbillion winter. Share the person. Just go to the Middle East but when you cut the first out of nowhere to three billion winter I'll get one point five billion something like that and you have just wants to you know once in a lifetime could easily win ten million dollars and probably turn around that month and win a twelve million dollar right I. It's hard because this is an expensive sport and as much as these people arrested of of money that goes into this so You understand it as of now. I haven't heard anyone saying they're going to change their mind about going. I'm sure people are a little bit nervous but I mean let's be frank. I think anytime you over. There is probably reason to be nervous. So it's just an individual decision and I wouldn't chastize anyone. Whatever they they decide because it feels like them? That's their call. It's not it. I make my own decision on my life. You make your own decision on your own life and I think that's the way it goes. Oh by the way. I think you're under selling the Saudi Cup. I believe the purses twenty million dollars. Well it's ten million the whip you get ten billion but it's it's one that that that's what I'm saying he gary West is looking at it. I will get sent. Don't get out of the home and billion dollars if I say in that term so you can when you look at it now. You basically have to win the Pakistan that in line with at one point I for share of the first compares to the ten million that he will win. Take home for winning the Saudi Cup where he will be the favorite and a one term mounting great definitely. I Dunno betting Saudi Arabia. But I know American pools. He's GonNa behavior and you running for stabbing tons of money. That's a pretty compelling nonetheless in the Pegasus World Cup you do have. Some horses is with some credentials including higher power. The Pacific Classic winner. We mentioned Omaha Beach. roadster for Bob Baffert is aiming toward the Pegasus. And you will be there. How do you see this first? Major race of the year shaping up that force right now in training maximum very doubt after that case to be made then Omaha Aubenas bunch of wrong especially violent eight might be the second and third bout with McKinsey right there with them so when you get fun to run and Omaha Beach I think he got a pretty darn good race. I mean it's interesting possibilities. Are the horses doing nominated at the box He's done. I'm very well. This is of course. A lot of people east might have remembered with Chad Brown Barrasso. And you know he was good you know. He got coming up. In the minor spot that West to John Adler Verona's ray thing all of a sudden. He's winning all these steaks and eat it. You can't east to Churchill even lost or any blocks. We'll see if he's going to be the ones that they decided to send into the race. It'd be a good one back wizar- people know this story. That fifteen thousand dollars who ran against maximum security and the world's most famous Amos. Sixteen Thousand Dollars Eight lamer and it'll be in there. I think it'll be a big competitive fourth. It doesn't I think have the superstar. One runner arrogate powerpoint chrome Omaha beaches in that category But it's interesting. It's good to get back into talking about racing and Bobby Hall. Nobody better to do it with so. Thank you so much barry. Thank you always chat that with you so when we come back here on the gate. The site of the world's first million dollar horse race is short on dollars and short on time time to secure them. Welcome back to win the gate in July of two two thousand. Nearly twenty years ago Churchill. Downs home of the Kentucky Derby purchased Arlington Park in Chicago for nearly seventy one million dollars. Arlington's owner Dick Duchossois had closed the track in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight and nine hundred ninety nine saying that he could not compete with other gambling businesses. The opened again in May may of two thousand presumably with the knowledge that a sale was coming at the time. Churchill was in something of an arms race against the stronach group. When it came to buying up tracts the idea was to create networks of tracks for simulcasting and cross promotion of races and Events in nineteen ninety nine Churchill bought calder race course in Miami and Hollywood Park in California and then bought fairgrounds in New Orleans in two thousand and four? This was meant to counter the STRANA group which began its buying spree in nineteen ninety eight with Santa Anita then they added Gulfstream Park in Florida. Both major Maryland tracks Laurel and PIMLICO as well as golden gate fields and Portland Meadows and Oregon stronach versus Churchill. Wasn't exactly the Cold War. But the battle lines had been drawn it it seemed that Churchill was the first to blink Churchill dumped Hollywood park like a hot potato in two thousand five just six years after buying it. Churchill said at the time that California has forsaken racing and its needs reports came from fairgrounds in two thousand thirteen that the turf course was too dangerous juris to race and that the track had been poorly maintained ever since the churchill purchase at the same time Churchill was trying any maneuvering possible to get out of its obligation obligation to operate racing at calder. Eventually the STRANA coned Gulfstream Park worked out a lease agreement to run the calder meet in October and November this year. Two Thousand Twenty is the final year of Churchill's obligation to lease the meat after which it may convert the track into a shipping logistics center. Or something like that.
Derby season breaks fast
"Many of the horses that are Derby hopefuls are getting ready to embark upon that road to Churchill downs. Chance at doing. Just that later today in the Macho Macho showman for our good friend. That's trainer Saffy. Joseph Junior who is with me now here on the Horse Racing Radio Network Saffy. Good morning it might Good how about that call chance it big big win. Last time out he was that was the first time going to turns. And obviously the right way the way you want to do it and hopefully they can have a repeat performance about today. Yeah what makes him so impressive to you saffy. If he just carries himself watch him breezing work and he just he has a different going. I don't know that this guy just almost like he votes oats and doesn't seem very rarely. Do we begin to blow even worked some quick times and you never really young to blow. It is a good thing means that uh normally you. You've got a lot more stuff. What of the past couple of months been like for him? He hasn't been out since that win. On September twenty eighth. So what did they been like for him. Yeah initially ever had decided to skip the British back off them. Then we're we had thought about going to the Jockey Club and he got AH virus. I missed it a long time so it changed I mean we wrote it to the race. Remedying the springboard mile but they had to quarantine and we wrong to that race with two Corinthian run homerun allowed to go. 'cause we wouldn't be able to come go stream so then. The next plan was the Moocher match marriage right now. Eastern forty cents seems to be in good form orm looks well and obviously coming off layoffs. I'm facing there's some there's some quality and also that's never know how tight you have them. What we think we got him? Yeah every year when we start seeing the newly turn three year olds make their their first start of the new season we hear that the adage that you know those couple of months from say September October to January can be huge in terms of the physical and the mental all development for these young horses. So compare what you see from chance it today on January fourth compared to what you saw back at the end of September definitely much more relaxed and his works before he wanted to go go now we. We've been giving them targets and he'll he'll sit back and he'll wait for the Q.. And you'll go times go. That's an attribute that he needs to. You'll need to how as a racist got software needs to relaxing and listening to the right around the right asking for that Cinco. Fleeing the writer wants to go so I think that's the biggest developmentally show before early in his career. He playful you'll go on and on but he's all business on the Tran. I think he's mature and more money to lead the biggest aspect in that sense learning to do things the right way and he's always been impressive. He's always he has not laterally talent raw. Tyler there's a lot of calendar he's learned to control yen. He's always been forwardly. Placed in in all of his career starts yes. I don't think he's been worse than third. And that was in his debut when he was Kinda shuffled back a little bit that day He likes to be up close to the pace. Is that what you expect from them again. Today today yeah I think just you just have the naturally high cruising speed that he doesn't need to be on the leader but he just he just naturally five he puts himself a good spot on today. Hopefully gets whoever in their cleanly and liquor is going putting needs to be post time for the Macho Macho Jomon Gulfstream four thirty eastern. It will no doubt go a little bit later than that. Probably low closer to five o'clock by the time they run it but Yeah a big big moment moment for chance. It and we'll see if he can maybe put himself on that Derby trail. Do you look at him right now. Saffy as a horse that is that is a legit Derby Derby contender or do you still have things that that you need to see from him. y'All ability I think he's one of the Best Ryozo there but it's easier. US hasn't done and he's going to have to prove each so for me. I always wanted to prove it before you could speculate but definitely derby driven at the moment. He has a tolerant. We think I think that's essentially a seems like there's no Allenton so I definitely think we're definitely Dermot dreaming but one step at a time and today they will give us a good indication of Iraq.
"churchill downs" Discussed on How To Bet Horse Racing Podcast
"Fourth in the race should get a great trip from the outside post. And you know whatever's going on with Peter Miller and it's all positive of you've been batting him I look at. There's another worst I love in this race. Six to one mo Jo man should a one. Last time I picked day was almost nine to one. He rushed up with the real. He was in tight. He had to take back off the leader into the pocket. He was talking the whole time. Anxious HE CUT. The rail late was gained to the wire and he lost the do share. Who is a graded stakes caliber? Sprinter who rallied from the clouds third race off of the layoff six to one in the morning line just needs a little bit of racing. I do see a lot of speed in here. This is the worst that can Rate three or four five lengths off the pace and come running Again you know if I want to get a little bit Q. And maybe single this horse in spread crazy around him. You know you. You're right on something like this and a pays fourteen dollars into catch a few other prices. Not not the worst way in the world to approach and either no done deal intrigues me. Five to one so not one of those true separators but little nervous You you mentioned this already. A one at keeneland you go to back Speed and fade Never actually made the lead at Churchill and it does seem like the the keeneland runners who've performed well not here at Churchill so haven't fully decided yet what to do done deal but obviously fits this group on the same level at Keeneland a few weeks ago. Yeah I mean you think. Maybe telekinesis speed fresh. I raise for Jackson from the rail. I mean do they just go and hope for the best? And then you've got cured on the outside has got pressing type speed to although he's capable of sitting a little bit off of it. I mean if they lead done done deal. He's going to be dangerous. I think he's the speed of the speed. I'm just hoping for a little bit of pace pressure again. It's a it's a seven furlong race which I kind of changes the complexion of it a little bit. Yeah that There's this amount shipper Stuck to five and a half six which is just the nature of he runs But by Malibu Moon out of Bernstein mayor I'd have to think stretching out won't be an issue in the numbers say he's competitive as well Might like them a little more if they were able to get a local. Jackie interested but Most we'll see how far I can stretch. But he would be one at ten to one that has the look of south of maybe a separator Which gets us to the last and certainly things. Don't get easier here Joe. We will look at this as if it's on turf Nine furlong maiden race The two morning line favorites are combined Ofer Sixteen lifetime. We have three first-time starters first time North America for Rudy Where you're going I call on Rudy like you guys are on a first name basis or something and one of my favorite things you do. Joe. Yeah I know. I don't think anybody else calls them. Rudy. Yeah see see. If you get some trainer Bob Trainer Body language Info down on the paddock on this one. Because it's it's wide open. It's not going to help us pick five purposes. But I just got a feeling Ramsey solution probably is cut out to be a nice worse. It's the horse's by real solution. New One Arlington million shots ten. Sarah Ramsey Stan this horse. Obviously they want to try to improve stallion value. I don't think they would name Horse Ramsey solution if the horse didn't have some talent and the horse gap bat down to five to one on debut. All chance at the start lost eight length at the Ray Brandt evenly thereafter three workout. Since for Wesley. Ward you gotta think of this is gonNA improve significantly first time. I reported as a gelding so that horses a little bit sneaky attend to one the number ten Alexander Hamilton for a quarter of a million dollar by. He's proven that he's been really good with these. Young horses has to try to work a trip from the extreme outside post but that horse could be a little bit sneaky as well and then a couple of the other ones. I like are actually on the also eligible list. That attorney Tim who comes from a really good family seem to wake up. Last time for Greg fully and then King of fortune the other maker putting blinkers on for the first time in the third career. Start that one has the right to improve as well. So scratches will be a big thing for me in this race to see who's in and who's out and obviously that nine for long distance is an equalizer for some of these horses to attorney. Tim is definitely one. I'd be keen to see dry in Kind of attracted me as well You know otherwise I'm trying not to really get married in any direction because I do more than any other. Race scratches On the swimming it stays on the turf is is really going to be essential and I have not seen any workout reports yet Which is certainly going to be part of the equation with Dermott for Brendon. Walsh to I remember in the summer. Beat me with the first time starter on turf in the last race and then for set has the North American horse and Cassie with Alexander Hamilton. Up based on our discussion it does not sound like you have a single set fair to say Unless like we said earlier you know there. Can you find like a two to one last horse in the sequence that you could say madness? I'M GONNA turn this pick five into a pig four. 'cause I sure can't yeah I mean like I said if I build a couple of different tickets and single Mojo man on one maybe single carte blanche on the other and hope that I'm right about one of those two horses you know. You mentioned the workout reports to everybody interprets information differently. You know whether you're using the sheets or thorough manager numbers or the Brits numbers or a combination of all of them everybody interprets the numbers a little bit differently as far as the workout reports. Go Man I don't really care that much about sturt workouts for turf horses. I think if you see positive words it can only be a positive sign but divisive negative work on on dirt for horse. That's on turf. I mean we own we own a turf only horse and we know that he doesn't work while I'm dirt. But we know that he runs well on turf so be careful getting caught natura and then horses that gold. Nine furlongs like. I'M NOT REALLY WORRIED. About how fast they went in there. Half-mile workout right. So that's another thing just off topic but something that I think if you're using the workout reports which you should I mean we see Brandon Szabo on the air all the time. He comes up with horses that I can't get to two days in advance because I don't have the workout reports but he watches train every morning. And you know he's pop five six to one shots that I can't get to today's advance but if you're handicapping betting the races whether it's Bruno's report Brandon's report a combination of both or anybody else's report I think that's important having a good investment and I think one thing you mentioned you do that. I thought was a great idea Need to start incorporating myself You know as you mark down the thoughts of the Lakers whose information you look at and you can go back to it and say oh less time the source got positive or negative and compare it to this time and maybe they're going in the right direction or maybe it's the wrong direction or maybe they always work bad and it's not indicative of what you see in the afternoon so really knowing that these horses are individuals and finding those patterns for the Horse I think It's definitely a part of unlocking the real power those reports rather than just popping in the day of and okay good workout. That's enough for me. Which at the right price. Maybe it is enough but typically it's helpful to have some context. None of the stuff that I'm doing is helping me this meat but I'm going to Yeah Yeah you just know the again. If a horse's training well Churchill and then went back to Keelan. And didn't Ron wellman comes back to Churchill. You're going to get a better price because of that. So you know it's worth paying attention to because these angles aren't always going to work but the more bags you having your the more clubs you have in your bag the better chance. You're going to have the connect the DOS. And that's why we're having this discussion today. All right well last question and probably don't know the top of your head so think about talk about it on the air gap Leo and Landry are the only two jockeys as of now have them out in every race of the pick five And my handicapping says Tyler's more likely to win more races and the pick five Mr November after all but Florante Real. I mean I think that's flown under the radar a little bit. Since he came back from the broken sternum. He's been he's been on real. I mean I don't know how you come back from a broken sternum and the cold weather and ride as well as he is. I mean I thought that was supposed to be a six-week injury you know. He almost made the Breeders Cup. I'm like I wouldn't ridden them on my horses and the Breeders Cup After that. Kinda injury but man. He's writing great. So yes yeah. Another rider pay attention to for sure But yeah I mean I know I got cory pegged at least once or twice in the sequence and I know I got tyler prominent too so you know one of these days. There's going to be an opportunity to bet these kind of had. No we both loved the jockey. Wager at Kentucky downs and hope that there's some sort of Similar wager in the future with you. Know all the different kinds of betting. We're going to have with sports wagering coming in those kind of props I mean are fun. So hopefully there'll be a day at time in a place in the near future where we can actually bet on something like that. Love it. All right well That's down the road and be good fodder for this podcast for sure Appreciate the time Joe. Three Wins in 4 Years Is a Record
"James Good Morning. Good Morning Steve. Thanks for having me on hope your weekend. Well it did. It did and I thought I saved I wrote I write down as many selections. It's always tough for Breeders Cup because then the paper gets all gets a little a little sloppy and sure enough here. I'm looking now and yeah I do have it. Actually there we go there we go home. You were a Vino guy and and bricks and mortar and and then spun to run so yeah your share of winners Too Key around I thought was on higher power. Though I didn't have you know I got you written down for Dino. I took higher power stirred Flavian Pratt. What's up on them? I'll tell you play the Heidi wrote one favorite Donna Duluth below she. The brewers Juke juvenile given up Phillies runner-up but he had a win. had four seconds and fourth earners. I thought that was a really a great performance by him and You know he has the Kentucky Derby win on his resume junkies like have that really just A good showcase for an upcoming star in our rank agreed and and I tweeted on Sunday. I've discussed this a couple of times this week. His record is stunning. And he's got people would say. Oh He's only got three wins. WHOA WHOA three wins? Thirty eight mounts and this is only his fourth year as fourth year riding his sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen at-bats. Ah But another fourteen in the money finishes and then a handful of fourths and fifths I mean the percentage is frightening. I mean considering considering the level of competition really outstanding and he gives he gives every virtually every horse. If he's got horse to work with he gives them a chance. It's definitely and you know I mean I think Santa Anita and hosted the Breeders Cup eight times previously and and and he was writing a lot of california-based debased horses and one of my takeaways was definitely that this this year's Breeders Cup with completely unlike any out in California before I mean just uh-huh it just. It really started on Friday where the first four winners had all raised it Aqueduct Belmont and by the end of it I'm you know I'm looking at it it it. If you'd looked at the charts that Saturday at at Saratoga you wouldn't be surprised to see our ad or ts in four races Castellano and Rosario win into each and then Jose or ts Manny Frank Ricardo Santana All winner races well and Joe Bravo and that's what happened. They took twelve to fourteen races and and all twelve of those horses that race in New York this year now very strong on that on that front and ah not to say that Just had the conversation with Nick. Lock about the euro's and there were there were solid efforts and solid board hits in addition to Iridescence win but The you know the and there were solid performances from west coast sources to bell. Athena's Bella Fina. At under under certain circumstances dances might have won. The united almost looked like a winner hundred yards from the wire There were there were plenty of of solid performances from every region In some cases. Look at Vino. Vino having been into California. I think counselor a lot. You fold in folding would ask. Did you know getting there early with Matali Actually Navarro to I mean in Navarro got there early with a chance. A Lot A lot of times the a Lotta Times. The juvenile turf sprang can be like locally based sources can do all your top two in that race were both based in California with Peter Miller and you the one hundred and thirty five bucks. That's right that's right. That's right his second his second in the race in three years. I'm just looking at the list to spun to run from Philadelphia. So you get you get a a regional kind of a B.. Track player are sharing sharing holiday for new. New York's thunder run actually ran in a mate. Nice at act backer. And the winner but I mean the parks and mom Sharing base at Far Hills at far hell and Maryland bred. That's a couple of times Toga. Yeah yeah everybody everybody got their Lixin. Actually when you when you kind of go through this And I'll just say I I came away. I mean granted. I thought the four big stars coming into enforces with the serious horsey. Our aspirations Bricks Mourner Corner Sister Charlie and Matola two of the four one I think it really does come down horse a year two bricks and mortar and Matola Louis. But I'm giving the edge bricks mortar. I thought it was fantastic campaign. He had been a mile or previously. Before you know getting hurt and undergoing that surgery and I like the fact that Brad Cox I mean Brown ran him. You know he never ran he. Random and six different courses six different states. You went from Florida to Louisiana to Kentucky Hockey to New York to Illinois and the California To win a mile and a half for the first time in his career so to me. He's a deserving of the year well and and driving home the point about the mile and a half for people that because they always beat all the same types and didn't stretch himself then no he did and and you know the there was even people that were incredulous about him going the mile and a half so you know that that score extra points Without a doubt yeah definitely and you know to me One of the Mike Smith that made the point After a couple Oh. He ran second on a pair of privet favorites midnight zoo in Omaha Beach. And he's made the point that he'd right like those races back because it was hard to 'cause over that track track but to me it was more so that those horses were caned on the rail going into the first turn. Blue Prize was tenth early. You know tolley Holy Arosa could be five or six minutes off the pace. But they're jocks really at. That did a great job keeping them in the clear and I really thought midnight. These to you You know continue just to be in traffic through into the far turn. And when she got out she finished great as a case I mean they the great job on on TV and other highlighting it where I think of a blueprint. It's got the jump on her because of the trip the greed and it and it it also. It should be noted for people that are you know insisting that the track nobody could close well. WHOA that's not true? which is simply me? Just look at the chart for the distaff. What do you mean nobody could close at that? Just you know Omaha. Beach closed closed In in as well came from often and others whitmore made up. I mean it wasn't going to get to the winners and the the exact pair But he closed Idiom really had down below chicken that juvenile fillies and that's when the track was absolutely at its worst deepest pissed most impossible right based on based on the figure and in fact. It's funny because yesterday. Paul Matisse was talking about how difficult Friday was to make figures and then it was echoed by Jerry Brown on His On his experts board board. Somebody brought up. Paul's conversation and Jerry also echoed that the way the track changed from the you know the middle part of the day to by the time even the the juvenile boys ran so typically you would if the juvenile of the males run more than two seconds faster than the phillies. You'll get say their way better than the nose Philly but I do think it was. It was a track getting off faster later. And I. I'm I'm not down on British idiom or Donna Boise at all even though that right they came home. I think they should be still terrific runners. And you know it's it's hard to gauge coming out of the juvenile being real adobe guy Exactly what that means going forward so into court definitely Nice Horse Court Vision You know hasn't isn't had much success at Stud but he's bread You know fire. Classic types with that pedigree of his female family has a lot of stamina influences. It just doesn't have much class. You won't find any stakes winners really in that immediate female family well your final the final takeaways. My final take away so I just you know I you know I was. I thought you know it was a tragic end McGowan crew. I mean it was just a Really hurt to see that happy at the very end After a thirteen of the Breeders Cup races have that happened in the ashtray and and racing. Definitely I think has some issues and concerns going forward. the people in the industry maybe do a better job messaging but I still remain. Optimistic is the horserace fan about the future and I was. I came away like in the Breeders Cup. I thought there was some great performances and Looking for work once again the next year very good well. We're looking forward to the action this weekend give us some thoughts about Churchill had terrific card even today yesterday and Wednesday were good and of course the Commonwealth on Saturday the feature the Grade Three Mile and a sixteenth. The three year olds on the grass. It is an absolute war. Some thoughts about what's been going on while everybody was paying attention to Breeders Cup and and we got to look forward to this weekend. Yeah they had three stakes last week and In the MEA mischief flatmate go for the sale and and look good. She loves Churchill Downs Multiple Grade. One winner there in the Divine Queen got off to bad start. Art Never Fire in the In Saturday stakes chill Lewke and Sally's Kirwin breakers Swin She tried the Indiana Oaks folks earlier. This year didn't run good for Dale Romans. But she had one or last two allowance races by like about fifteen lenz combined and ran a rug. Good Rice debris greet Brian Cox's
Dave Grening, Rick Hammerle, Gabby Gaudet
"McGee Jay Brennan and Dave Greg Good Morning the hard act to follow right there well. I think you're up to it and much like we did with Jay. Hey we didn't get a chance to talk last week. Day I saw some of your thoughts on paper and on twitter but quick hit from last weekend the Jockey Club Gold Cup Diku and everything that came with it didn't agree with the call but that's par par for the course for me and the stewarts here good rates by both horses of Abu kind of the call takes away from the performance of both you know Roseville in sort of honor. I thought it was Kinda. Overshadowed what how well they ran I thought it was in solid effort. You know Roy Moore your skin and people give them credit for so he's tactical enough that you're going to go back to the race. In California that he won he was four why but right up on the pace so he can be he can play from the start and still finish finish which is a good thing for him to have going into the classic and Code of honor you know stepped up against a couple of quality older horses and and still continues to show improvement as Shug shoveling transfer your kid and I'm glad they didn't go into stuff. it'll it'll spice it up a bit very much and we talked to show yesterday what turned into a was supposed to be a you know. Tell us about the decision ten minutes turned into forty because because show and you can talk about the current horses and then you can talk about his Breeders Cup record you know he's he's run horses in the Classic Eight Times. He's got two seconds and third and I asked him if he thought you know this was as good or the best one of the best chances that he's had in a classic and he kind of feels it is I think so in part because he's got a quality improving horse and in part because I don't see a real stand out in the division there you know I I was even if Mackenzie had one last week is still affected him at a mile and a quarter. I think come back with a pack a little bit and now I think he's you know emit commit pack there. I you know he he he was not impressive last week and and right now he doesn't have a jockey so that could be a hindrance so I I think the the you know I I think the visual the classic is releasing. My is right now pretty wide open well it it certainly enhances the classic and we got some. Jay's thoughts will also wait for some other news in decisions. Tacitus you know who I could send as many as three with a late and Yoshida. We'll see what the tacitus call is but have you talk to Jimmy later in the week about preservationists. I don't think the preservation and the clock berry good yeah. I kind of. They were Iffy iffy. Even before we got through the jockey there pretty traditional people. You Know Oh you go to the classic going for a good race. You don't go you don't travel cross country now. It's in your own backyard. Maybe maybe say okay. I'm hearing but the put him on. A plane ain't off that race. just doesn't make any sense to me and. I'm not sure what it was tales right now. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe they they just you know. Have you know conclude are dealing. Just say thank you. Thank you for the memories. They were well some other thoughts thoughts about the weekend the the two year old swept by Chad Brown and not necessarily by Chad Brown surfers Dave that were all that highly regarded regarded coming into the early fall. It looks selflessly ran a decent race when she got in her debut. She was a bit why she was just what about a half length behind her stablemate and you know. She got a very nice trip. The other day and you know you beat a field that I didn't necessarily I think was seller but that didn't necessarily like her either so I can't you know I'm not saying that I choose my choice but look it's very you know. Handicapping is hard art. When it comes to the Grillo it's simple to spend on Chad Brown. It just just do it. Does it seven and eight. I've never seen I've Nev- I don't know of any race that he may be bad for our security security and and and dumb or something that just a guy dominates the race like Chad Brown at least in New York dominates the race Jeff Brown dominates the Mus Grill and just you know next year when it comes. I'm just circle the Chad. He's got more the ones at about boxing and you'll walk out with a little more money so any payment structure solid rates you know. I I liked about structure that he showed you different dimension in the first race. It was a slow pace. He was up on it and then he finished and then they got a bit of a faster pace and close close so you like versatility show. I need to know more about what else is in that race before. I say an annoying Kim and enter a the you know a victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turpin juvenile fillies served interesting I said they were aware of it at the time but selflessly not nominated to the Breeders Cup now looks set clemens got that money hidden in his closet somewhere so he can easily put up the supplementary see but it it was a weird kind of a strange thing maybe just crack but be supplemented for the raiders stuff to run and I'm sure she will do well. beyond the two year old stakes stakes midnight zoo in the Belle Dame and got you got you got her legs stretched and did what was necessary. The race as that ended up surprising to some degree aside from everything that went on in the Gold Cup four Horsfield in that Vosper that ended up being really exciting and forensic fire and imperial put on some show down the stretch cool horses you know he's still still Harvard have trouble taking that race threatens fire and last year the parts race horse averaged one the rate just a cool towards I mean that's a super cool horse right there in so small but he's got such big hardy so fast and you know I think they call it a little bit adviser prize when Friends Fire Collared Him and he still had something more to offer and he gave it to him and you know maybe maybe hard race before the Breeders Cup will help him in the Breeders Cup opposed to a couple of cakewalks that he had especially last year Vosper. You just walked around there and now last year Frears Cup. Chances may have been compromised the fact that he just doesn't run it and go to Churchill downs I mean I think he's on there three times. The probably three worst races throughout the worst rates is I thought he may well enough to del Mar a few years ago when he was in the Mitch Breeders Cup and second. I believe but maybe there's hard rates will help him. battle tough because it's a tough rate expensive very very competitor's. Maybe one or better rates on the car to the totally and chance a lot on you know. I guess you have to see what Omaha beach that rates for tomorrow how he runs. A and B what they use it for work. the the the sprint has potential to come up here one of the best races on the card and I think that race will have imperial head registered. Well turn our attention attention to tomorrow and there's a lot there's a lot of intriguing match-ups paper going into Saturday at and there's actually a nice set races on Sunday with the thirty the flower bowl in the present. We gotta start with Champagne and a green light. Go Ah to forego the hopeful. After the track was a a a slop. I don't blame Jimmy Jerkins at all for taking that route however he comes into the champagne now having to go a mile and there are at least is three others that are are major players here not the least of which is Barkley tag and Saka Toga the last time they had a two year old like like this. They kept funny side against New York breads until going to Florida for the holy bull this time they're going to go for an early open company opportunity the and it's at the highest level the first thing. I want to say that this race is there is a major scratching the race three technique. Jeremiah texted me this morning and I put it up on twitter a little while although has a lung infection and we'll come out of the race and I thought he was a significant player in the field so it's down to six source field going at that. Tis The law law you know of course is very impressive. Beating New York reds first time out had shin issue that Barkley took care of list about three weeks total of training but it's gotten back in I saw I saw at least two if not all three of his three of his works here and they're very solid workout you just wonder if the layoff going a mile with the one rate is going to happen ready to do it now. The layoff is very similar to green like oh the day difference so it's not that sort of balances out but green go with tested in stakes company and also has races opposed to one and I just like I just really liked it. I I don't know what he's going to become. I don't know how far is GONNA WANNA run but I just like the way both starts getting solid well built for uh-huh hardy type of horse who just has a great hind end you know where the power generated from and I think like the mile and beyond and I think this has a moment for Jimmy. Sake that the horses say how down and continue on the campaign Jimmy. He says out born whatever that might be but I think it'd be awful strongest training like that rate.

"Their triple crown on should be a fun renewal of the breeders. It'll be real fun of rising. Star gets their twelve wanna so i would think it's the fun of the day from being on for for everyone. We like any twelve to one no matter where they run. We do we absolutely do <hes>. We'll talk pacific classic with tom. Robinson dallas stuart a little later on in the program <hes> we have a couple of breeders cup winners running today jay walking around mammoth slowly liberals back back in the green flash at del mar five furlongs. You and i spent a good deal of time talking about this race last night for a field of six that can that contains contains a two-time breeders cup winner and stormy liberal and awards for the course and eddie haskell who six or seven del mar in his career. This is a interesting race for just feel the sex yeah i mean it's it's talented and there's a ton of speed in here. I think that's the main thing is that the tasinari looking like. It's going to be pretty fast early and i don't know if the if the speed horses are going to be able to sustain their runs after it'd be softened up by one another. I think we're both in agreement that stormy liberal should get the best trip <hes> right behind the early pacesetters and not i too far away because he's certainly not a slow horse by any stretch of the imagination but undrafted the old geezer nine years old a a million and a half earnings and and he's been in really good form this year. I think the racist that he's run have been excellent <hes> even his last race of the year last year that he wanted at churchill downs on the yielding surface was was really good in two races. This year have been excellent celente. He shortens up a little bit to five furlongs. He's he's one going five for a long so not impossible but the pace is going to be fast and he's going to be flying at the end so <hes> it's a it's a really interesting race in a race where i don't think you can dismiss anybody. That's in here real and he has one of those races where anybody can win. I hate those because those are the days when i when i had the all button erasing that stormy liberal ones by eight and based four twenty. It's amazing how that seems to work. Obviously doesn't always work that way but certainly would seem to work. The del. Mar oaks is wide had open <hes> the other grade one on the card out until molitor on this afternoon on that at about eight thirty tonight. It'll be field of fourteen in three year. Old fillies chased grade one. You'll lucid grade one. If you will have believe if i'm not mistaken that they're <hes> <hes> they're all chasing their first grade one win <hes> which of course the phillies is funny or some form of the phillies at super super super important. That's as wide open a great one. Is you're going to say yeah. There's there's a lot of nice phillies in here. A lot lot of phillies with talent to the pace scenario should be fair <hes> their their speed..

"I just laughed early. We're not opening. It can't be you know they might my my favorite great story on. This front is at Churchill downs. You got it yeah. I think it's a test we were. We were Churchill Rachel. Was this a breeders cup. We we were at Churchill I think and we had we had tornado warning and we have to evacuate the building. Everybody had to go down to the second floor that that that one was a classic and I kept trying to say you know can I can we do in a broadcast and they said no yeah the they said No. You have to leave the way at the V eight the we have to basically stop the show turn our attention to the the the reason we're all here and that's betting and yeah and handle wise and program wise there. There are the the new wrinkles every a year you know one thing of course that people well received the naira bets pick five being opened up to the to all eighty ws into all platforms which immediately saw the predictable fum influx flocks yeah but it served its purpose I it was being used as a marketing tool for Nyra pets for those for those two years basically for years or hesitant to put in a lake pick five pick four is such a popular bet here so the always concerned about cannibalization this internal conversations so we launched it as a kind of a unique aspect of naira bats it made sense as a marketing vehicle but feel like it played itself out at least I did and <hes> so we opened add up and now we've been talking about the pick six recently which gets a lot of feedback in what do we want to do and there's been a lot of talk on twitter. I monitor it and you know when you play in with the betting menu. It's delicate. It's a fun conversation. I've had countless one conversations with Serlin over dinner over stuff so what we have is. What is the public really want? Do they want one. The other are both one of the things about the pick six if you change it you if you're going to keep a different version of it because I've heard that like why would you get rid of the two dollar one for the Jackpot or why wouldn't you just offer both you'd actually have have to put one on a separate card but I was going through this last time. Is that the worst thing in the world. Keep the two dollar on a separate card bringing the Jackpot and something throughout the group today well where and where do we because the option is out there. But where are we start the meat. I mean we're we're. We don't have final approval for the Jackpot. Pick six something we've been working on the rules for a long time in New York every state's no force but the gaming commission yeah. We're we're. We're at the finish line so we would likely get this during the meat. Would we introduce it during the question <hes> that's something we're swirling <unk> be crazy to do that. We re. It's kind of the best place to test something like that because you've got ah there is a time stamp of the of the seven weeks yeah and you want and you'll you'll get action in it and you could actually potentially force it out more often. Make it fun but then there's the classic pick six. There's there's something to that. I mean there's a tradition to it and we're kind of like the last one exactly so does it does it harm anything to to leave that on the side and let people play as well. That's something I'm going to challenge group with now. That's tough for the marketing folks tough for the mutual folks get a little confusing. What do you call these things but I think it's something that I'm going to ask them to take a look at or I'm going to get some feedback from talking about on the show? Absolutely what I'm really looking for..

"But if I had to bet, I would bet contested that I don't have to bet. Yeah. I like uncontested in here I like the train and change Tom. And you know this horse he's run well off the freshening. I think that's going to help him a little bit too, that seven weeks and the new Barna certainly going to help. He's drawn inside probably use some speed. We all man is good front and rider. I think there's a lot to like about him. I think you do worry a little bit. I worry a little bit that he might have been become worse for the course and maybe he's just more of a wall on awash was his two races at laurel other-worldly compared to everything else. He's run. I mean he's been. Since ational and the one race going seventy and sources you can handle he won. It's hard to really think he was going to be a big player in the Churchill Downs less time and. Yeah disappointed in the Commonwealth. Undoubtedly this morning, the Commonwealth. But I mean he found this friends in here. I think wars club beat them pretty well. The oh I in that Commonwealth. Maybe he can wake up the stranger things have happened. Certainly, but I'm gonna put my eggs in the uncontested basket from the rail that goes race number eight the Kelly's landing. Overnight stakes race number ten. The first of two two year old races that will cover the debutante is for the two year old Phillies, six wrongs with one hundred twenty five thousand on the line on wine, pretty big field and here pontiff. Magic dance Steve as most hall of Famer and Ricardo Santana junior and the team up here. She's coming back, just three weeks after a very impressive. Meet in scores. One way almost five lengths at eight to one. She ran eighty four Beyer speed figure. I'll tell you what the next closest buyer number. I know you like the prison that PP's next closest buyer number, in here is a fifty six as a sixty one rather. And that was the number two Indy takes charge. You broke I made in Churchill back on maith thirty first. But boy, they gotta find at least twenty three points on magic dance. Yeah. Well magic dance. She looks pretty salty. She's by more than ready. I don't know how she paid a two one in her debut. But, but she did. And she looks tough right back. Ricardo Santana takes over. He must have had a conflict that day because Brian Hernandez rotor in her debut. And I bet you he said that about pretty nice. Philly Indy charge. Also has the second best birth speed figure. Patrick Byrne has a small stable, and, and this could be a rising star for him. She blew out nicely to thirty five and to Churchill Downs. So I think that's pretty much the race. Those those are the two that that look best on paper. Chiluba lips comes in from California. Good California speed broke her maiden. First time out got a seventy nine which is which is right behind any takes charge. So I think you have to maybe consider her with Rossio Beheira. No. In the saddle she's getting blinkers to interesting move by Mike Harrington with Beth three and a quarter put blinkers on. So she's the only horse, I honestly think. What have any chance of beating magic dancing, because it's funny dude, you get a field of nine two year old Phillies at this time of the year. Only chew of them went wire-to-wire when they want my good girl who wanted in the anagram you'll in four and a half, and she'll who want to needed four and a half. The only two and now a little lifts. Come in with the blinkers in the California speed. I gotta think she's faster than my good girl who didn't show any speed in her first who starts, so I've gotta think truly lips in front having magic dances into far behind. If Santana doesn't just put magic dance on leave and say, you know what? I'm just going to get out of here. I'm putting villi on the lethal in. That's it. I think she will lips is the is the horse close the exact outlook because I see her getting loose on the lead..

"To get the Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in may, did you ever imagine as a kid that you would be hosting the national coverage of the Kentucky Derby, not for one half of one second. That's darn sure. I do remember watching Jim McKay wide world of sports back in the day. Bring the Kentucky Derby coverage on the triple crown, and I was lucky enough at the end of gyms career to work with him at ABC and know, what horse racing met you especially in Baltimore Pimlico. We always think of Jim that respects so much to him. And that's where I really remember spectacular bid horses. Like that back when I was growing up in the seventies. And what the triple crown meant nationally, the sport of horse racing obviously has evolved over time. It's become more of a regional sport. But this is the national day for the sport. And if we get lucky, and we'll get a justify in the sport carries on with a great run here through may and early June. Bob Baffert has emerged as the face of the sports specially at derby time for those who don't follow horse racing on a regular basis. Is there a figure personality from another sport that perhaps you could draw comparison with Bob kind of help us understand his impact on the sport? Baffert? It's odd that a coach if you wanna quit jockey a player at a coach to a trainer, it's odd that a coach would become the face of a sport. But I think Baffert's become that whether it's the silver hair or his ability to be very telegenic in Telugu story on camera and be. Very open to share with TV audience and the writers who around horse racing everything that's going on. He's the one continuous face. We've seen at the biggest events year in year out wanted to almost say, you know, you start throwing a Gregg Popovich around where it's sustained excellence, and it's at a high level, and it seems that everybody who comes to him. Performs better that's of Popovich or Bill Belichick. Those types championship coaches or trainers at the biggest moments they deliver their best, and they take the athletes human or equine and seem to get them to perform at a higher level. The most all of their other peers on a regular basis in the biggest moments. You mentioned Jim McKay. He used to say that it fascinated him to think of two events the Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis five hundred taking place roughly two hours apart a couple of weeks apart. How excited are you? And.

And we've got some features here that our good friend Jodie Ling produced for us kind of taking a look at each of the horses that will be running in this year's Kentucky Derby earlier on the program. We had Paul Rogers with us in. He picked one of his picks was roadster. Here's Jody dimly telling us a little bit more about that horse now on look at the Kentucky Derby field one by one roadster. Bob Baffert calls roadster, his TMZ horse and many bettors on derby day. Could call him the favorite. Yes. One of Bob Baffert three horses. Roaster is probably going to take a ton of money the betting windows. He's got a huge upside. And it's coming off a victory in the Santa Anita derby grocer it has here. Back off you worked. Really, well, you know, we will we've always thought very highly of roasters positions.
