Medina Spirit Wins the 147th Kentucky Derby
"And he did so from Churchill Downs where history was made at this year's Kentucky Derby trainer Bob Baffert winning his record 1/7. Run for the Roses effort, hadn't said much about Medina spirit and didn't expect to see many reporters around his bar and ahead of Derby. I'm sure I won't see you the rest of league, but I appreciate you guys coming by talking to me. Oh, you have to go back to the days when there's hardly anybody here. At the 15 to 1 colt changed the narrative with a half length win in the run for the Roses to give Baffert his seventh Kentucky Derby. The most in history came in under the radar, and I just know I want to come in here bragging or anything like that. "All an on. My <Speech_Music_Male> your kitchen gives <Speech_Music_Male> me exiled <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Female> but then actually <Speech_Female> my college daughter <Speech_Female> has one in <Speech_Female> her sorority house. <Speech_Music_Female> We gotta get <Speech_Music_Female> an earful. Her we've gotta get near <Speech_Female> fire. I'm like all right <Speech_Female> fine. We'll get an air. <Speech_Female> I <SpeakerChange> use that <Speech_Female> twice a day. <Speech_Female> It's <Speech_Female> so easy <Speech_Female> it's so <SpeakerChange> healthy <Speech_Female> and it's <Speech_Female> yeah <Speech_Female> bob. Everybody <Speech_Female> needs an air fire. And <Speech_Female> it's worth <SpeakerChange> it's <Silence> worth the clutter on your counter <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> to check that out. <Speech_Male> I've heard about them. <Speech_Male> La people to <Speech_Male> your point like once <Speech_Male> you get one. People <Speech_Male> are really passionate <Speech_Female> about their air. Fryer <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> <Speech_Female> i can't believe i'm saying <Speech_Female> this. Okay i'm having <Speech_Female> it myself. <SpeakerChange> Well we're <Speech_Music_Male> having this conversation. <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> It's <Speech_Male> funny it's <Speech_Male> curious. <Speech_Male> You know you. <Speech_Male> You obviously come in <Speech_Male> contact with a lot of brands. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> i don't feel <Speech_Male> like you're obligated <Speech_Male> the say the brands that <Speech_Male> you work with <Speech_Male> but just curious as <Speech_Male> a person you <Speech_Male> probably interact with a lot of <Speech_Male> brands yourself like you buy <Speech_Male> stuff you <Speech_Male> watch. What's going <Speech_Music_Male> on around the around. The world <Speech_Male> are there any <Speech_Male> brands or companies <Speech_Male> or or causes <Speech_Male> that you follow <Speech_Male> you think other people <SpeakerChange> should be <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> taken notice. Oh <Speech_Female> yeah. I think <Speech_Female> i'm going to answer that with <Speech_Female> the 'cause question <Speech_Female> and so <Speech_Female> you know i think <Speech_Female> our next generation <Speech_Female> is <Speech_Female> really really <Speech_Female> really important <Speech_Female> And so <Speech_Female> actually served <Speech_Female> for seven years <Speech_Music_Female> on <Speech_Music_Female> the board of directors <Speech_Female> of a <Speech_Female> Domestic violence <Speech_Female> shelter here <Speech_Male> in louisville. <Speech_Male> And i learned a <Speech_Female> lot about <Speech_Female> how the <Speech_Female> secondary effects <Speech_Female> of <Speech_Female> witnessing trauma <Speech_Female> right. So if <Speech_Female> you're a child <Speech_Female> in your watching <Speech_Female> bad things happen <Speech_Female> between your parents <Speech_Music_Female> But that <Speech_Female> actually is is <Speech_Female> it happens <Speech_Male> in any form <Speech_Male> of violence <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> and so <Speech_Female> protecting children <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> against <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> violence <Speech_Female> directly <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> and then <Speech_Male> the like <Speech_Female> generational repeat <Speech_Female> of that <Speech_Female> right so <Speech_Female> the indirect impact <Speech_Female> is if they're <Speech_Female> seeing violence <Speech_Female> all the time even if <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> the violence is not against <Speech_Female> them <Speech_Female> the impact <Speech_Female> of that when they become <Speech_Female> adults is <Speech_Female> pretty awful <Speech_Female> on. So that's <Speech_Female> preventative. <Speech_Female> things that can <Speech_Female> happen or <Speech_Female> actions. That can be taken <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> protect kids <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> and help <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> them recover from that <Silence> that they've <Speech_Female> seen as a child <Speech_Female> so that they don't <Speech_Female> repeat that in <Speech_Female> the next generation <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> Some pre passionate <Speech_Male> about that. 'cause <Speech_Male> the to mazing <Speech_Male> last <Speech_Male> question for you <Speech_Male> curious as you <Speech_Male> think about marketers <Speech_Male> and marketing. <Speech_Male> What's <Speech_Male> your thought on like debatable <Speech_Male> largest opportunity <Speech_Male> or the biggest <Speech_Male> threat <Speech_Male> facing <SpeakerChange> marketers <Speech_Female> today. <Speech_Female> Socially i think it's the same <Speech_Female> thing so <Speech_Female> the biggest threat <Speech_Female> is clearly. <Speech_Female> I think complacency <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> right so the world <Speech_Female> is changing <Speech_Female> so quickly <Speech_Female> and the consumer <Speech_Female> is changing too. <Speech_Female> You know what their <Speech_Female> expectations are. <Speech_Female> And <Speech_Female> if you don't adapt <Speech_Female> your product <Speech_Female> or your service over <Speech_Male> time so <Speech_Male> that it continues <Speech_Male> to meet people's <Speech_Female> needs <SpeakerChange> in meaningful <Speech_Female> ways <Speech_Female> right. Maybe the air <Speech_Female> friars an example of <Speech_Female> that. You're <Speech_Female> gonna become obsolete <Speech_Female> and your product <Speech_Female> or service isn't going to be needed <Speech_Female> anymore. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> And so if <Speech_Female> you flip that around <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> that's a huge <Speech_Female> opportunity <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> stay <Speech_Female> relevant <Speech_Female> and become <Speech_Female> the next <Speech_Female> evolve your product <Silence> or your service <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> become the <Speech_Female> next most important <Speech_Male> thing in people's <Speech_Male> lives. <Speech_Male> Kristen <Speech_Male> you so much <SpeakerChange> for coming <Speech_Female> on the show today. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> Thank you for having me. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> This was fun. <Speech_Music_Female> I

"And so you know of one hundred and seventy thousand. People that are on site during our highest attended. Event probably wanted to market to maybe five thousand of those and we can place their branding in the appropriate places where that is one hundred percent efficient and effective. And so if you were in the infield you had no idea who are private jet partner was because you weren't in their target market you know and and that's something that super unique for us because of how distinctive our facility is with the different spaces and there really is a party for everyone so whether you want to reach everyone for your brand or whether you are specifically targeted on one end of the economic spectrum or the other we can make it work. I'm sure a number of cmo's and marketers listening to this conversation. What advice would you give them like if they're focused on either identifying or negotiating a partnership deal. What advice do you have you know about. My fellow salespeople will hate me for this but insists on that type of joint planning right. We are not in this for the short haul at all and you should not be either right. If you're going to form a relationship that is going to elevate your brand. You want that you wanna look at that as almost like a marriage and you wanna make sure that you are truly buying what you need and not just buying what someone is trying to sell you and so you know all of that exploration upfront and clearly defining the goals upfront and even the measures of success upfront. To whatever degree you can is very very important because you know what happens if you don't is your two years into something and somebody's gonna ask justify spend and if you if you haven't free established what those targets are. That's going to be a problem. So you really have to think to the future in the very beginning a partnership great advice. We've already i wanna switch gears and get to know you a little bit better..

"Yes. This was an interesting one So it's a long term partnership with kendall jackson an lacrosse two brands within their portfolio. That'll be poured throughout the venue. And then we also have some opportunities to feature things off site as well so they'll be integrated into with both brands. will be integrated into some of the derby at home food and wine pairings. Activating onsite actually throughout derby week. There's gonna be a text to sweepstakes leveraging actually derby twenty twenty two where we all hope that things will be normal and people can come and have a full blown derby week experience in twenty twenty two and it came to be. It's actually really an interesting story. So there's a lot of overlay between the jackson family outside of their wind business with horse racing. So you know. They've also been involved in the horse racing and breeding industry since probably the early two thousands through stonestreet far and so their founder. We've known her for quite some time. And this is really kind of combining her two passions on this great global stage radishes. A natural connection. They've never really done a sponsorship of this scope and scale before so actually starting with a pandemic reduced Crowd onsite is going to be a good pilot test for them. Because can you imagine going from zero to one hundred and seventy thousand kind of nice to have that steppingstone of. Let's test the waters. And then you know. See where we go and absolutely grow from here. But it's a great multi-layered right on the surface. It's kendall jackson and la chroma but really when you peel back those layers. It's multilevel when you consider. Also the horse racing inbreeding components of of that partnership and how deep echoes will a couple of episodes from now. We'll talk to bill. O'connor is the chief sales officer for jackson family wines and so we'll get his his take too but it does seem like to your point like with barbara banke who's the chairman and one of the founders of jackson family wines. The families the combination of wine and racing. I didn't know until recently that like that whole wind business. Started when i guess. Just jackson was The late founder. Barbers husband and when he was in his fifties after successful law career. It was more of a passion play. And then i believe that's how the horse racing part came to play too. And i just want his luck streak but frankly like him barbara everything they do the they knock it out of the park in. It seems like a perfect combination to partner with you. Guys the racing and wine and it's a passion of. There's i have a feeling that you'll be more successful after after being around barbara an evil. There's a few pats on that right. So what better combination than racing in wine right. Think back to the. You've got your here for fourteen races and there's thirty minutes of activity right in and and just the the demographic overlay I'll get more into this. I think in a minute but you know the the reason why this partnership makes sense for the wind brand specifically is because the demographics match perfectly with where they're looking to grow and so you're in this environment. What better opportunity to test wise and taste wines and.

"Doing at home. Bourbon tastings right and so. That's you know bourbon. Bourbon is also something pre covid or related to covid. That is a burgeoning opportunity for people to engage with separate from derby. And so you kind of put bourbon derby together which is a natural fit and it gets even bigger and more amplified and you can do it at home if you wanna stay in your yoga pants you can. If you've been in your yoga pants for twelve months in you're sick of it you can dress up right. People dress up at derby parties at home. You wear hats you wear the clothing vineyard. Vines is a great example of that partnership is is you know decade long at this point and people they sell not just people coming to the derby. They sell that line of clothing to people that are wearing it to celebrate. Many many other places beyond at the racetrack. Well i mean yeah. It's like the extension for sure and no one would ever look at the pandemic as a as a bright spot but maybe this helped codify some of these extensions for you guys in for your partners thinking about how to extend things further. Yeah i don't think it's a bright spot but you know. I think we've definitely done a good job making lemonade out of lemons. We would rather not happen for a whole host of reasons you know. When we last talked you mentioned cross collaborations partners teaming up to to do things together. Any examples come to mind as it relates to how the that's taking place here. We always try to do that. And back in the day. When people could travel we would get together and do annual partner summits where we would you know explore the ways in which our partners could work together. But you know this year. It's it's taking largely a digital format and and we do have some great examples like coca-cola in kroger so created a virtual game. That consumers can play on their phones. And you're basically you're racing the race track as from jockey's perspective and you're winning kroger prizes weekly so on our opening night with our bugler. So we have a steve bottom as the official track bugler and he's actually gonna play on opening night and on derby day kind of live in competition with vans and so what has happened. So far is leading up to these live. Competitions with steve which is kinda cute and creative and interesting and fun and then we also have a collaborative promotion with smithfield in four. It's a bet on bacon twitter promotion and basically you're You have the opportunity to win a mustang. You've got all my favorite things. Now you've have bourbon bacon. I like ford mustangs. But i'm not a big ford person but but i'll take a mustang with some bourbon and bacon. Yeah you get behind the wheel of that thing. And i mean it's kinda hard to not like i'm really excited about the electric version that they just brought out that's pretty amazing and it looks phenomenal. So haven't had a chance to test drive What brought us together was the news of Jacksonville winds partnership and in essence. My understanding standings kendall jackson and chroma will be poured at all events including the kentucky derby that churchill downs.

"But that's nothing you know when we've more than made that up in increased reach online already and so shifting to the online focus is really what's made things work out for the partners. It's a long standing partners. I mean one that stands out as would for reserve. I mean emma bourbon drinkers so that one stands out for me. But give me some. If you don't mind. Like i love a couple of examples of how people how you're how your partners are shifting to these digital digital virtual activation. 's so i guess overall right last year digital was like i just said the one bright spot of twenty twenty and just to quantify that a little bit for the for those listeners who like the data are total impressions. Were down nineteen percent but our total engagements were up one hundred and forty eight percent. So that's substantial we also pivoted. We've always focused on kentucky derby party so we pivoted that to kentucky derby at home obviously party. Kovin don't blend well together and we've built a whole bunch of new content for fans to engage with and woodford was actually a part of that and we took we had. I call it real derby in fake derby last year because we did some stuff on the first saturday in may which is when everybody comes to expect the kentucky derby to happen which it didn't last year and then it actually happened in september And so we had really two bites at the apple of. What do we give people online. And what do we build their. And so we took the key learnings from both of those and are continuing to refine and amplify that but some of that. Is you know we've got an at home menu that we are engaging with our chef. We've got bourbon ambassadors. We've got you know people that we pull in from our partners like brown forman. Some of our new partners will be pulling in as well and just creating these really interactive and or live segments online. It seems like a to your earlier point. The digital was a bright spot. But i mean this probably makes your property more attractive more more. Inherently you can reach more people with this focus on you know a digital activation in greatly expand to reach for sure fresh air and that's always been a goal of woodford reserve. It has before were right. The the partnership with woodforde grew from being the official bourbon to being the presenting sponsor of the kentucky derby itself before cove. It was a thing and one of the goals of that partnership was to get a bottle of woodford reserve at every derby party. So it's always been the site component much more so than the on site component and they. They're building step by step instructions for.

"For all of us. it's about predictive. Where the consumer is going and getting catholic right. One of the things we want to do is create odds that don't suck Embracing change creates great. "It's all tall task. I mean the come into this race would one start at three and that was two weeks ago. Someone said to me The other day it would be a task. Test even bob baffert but He's look good. I mean is his work here. I thought was excellent of all the gallup outs the other day. If you like to see that. I thought was the best in the mall and he. He's made a good appearance in the morning. Seems to be doing well just it just a a lot to ask. But he's a horse that you say you throw in a minute. Twenty five to one i. I wouldn't tell you not to. That's for sure He'd he'd be in that. Mix for me to tip of the hat to ken. Mcpeek giving pull this one off With this kind of schedule but Can't knock them in the morning. He certainly looking good to me. Mike wells everybody mike. Quick hit on the oaks just Some some top line thoughts run down terrific race. I mean it really is Trying to find my ps here. I got him there. They're getting close. it really is a terrific. It might wind up being trip brace. Mala fat is certainly the one to beat. I think but You know she's going to have to work out something and get some help a little bit of help upfront. You probably won't be too far back. Ten draw probably a good one for her. Put her in a nice talking position outside Nobody's worked better than travel column She's against she's another one in the morning. If you're watch your gallup you probably wouldn't wanna play her. She's a different animal when she works. Obviously when she runs she's going to be right up there in the early mix She does. Abe is grace to store outside. So hopefully she's not going to get in some kind of a little early duel with her breaking adjacent to one another crazy. Beautiful trae terrific going into the gulfstream park oaks In company with simply ravishing. Unfortunately has has already been retired due to some issue after a start but She she worked well going into the race. She's worked as well as he may even better coming out so she going to have to step forward from a numbers standpoint and she's going to need even a little more pace help Considering her running style but She's always if you add a little bit of a price. I think you have to consider as good as she's been doing Clairiere i think you have to consider her a lot. She sees look good out there from what i've seen of her. Millie fly Whatever chance she had probably lost at the post position draw. She worked adversary. Oh areo joke yeah. She really has to move forward from a number standpoint. But i will say. She worked well and the last couple of mornings. She's look really really good really strong out there this morning. so good race. I mean again. It could come down to a ride as race here too. And how the pace plays out could be really really important so I'm not even sure i'm gonna pick yet Between mallet fat travel com crazy. Beautiful probably somewhere in there but No searchers i just got to take a shot to maybe try to beat her in there i look. She's in the mix too in the post byzantine probably didn't help her but she's got iran so You know nobody's writing better than joel than maybe i read at the moment. So it's true. that's you know. You mentioned davis grace diodoros the under the radar oaks. Derby trainer participant. And we didn't talk about keeping in mind who has a very nice presence about him. He certainly worked really well. Surprised me with that. The other day and he he was full of the full of himself small. They kept them under rose. Strong control rain from from doing too much came out early this morning. To abe is grace's another one is you don't want to kind of watch her in the morning when she gallops he's not the prettiest mover either but She certainly going to be a pace factory near that's for sure i. The only thing concerns me a little bit as the way they worked. Are these these two starts also coming out of the fantasy. They really haven't done much whether they be given to pretty much what i consider. Maintenance works which is a little surprising. I i don't know diodoros style of the fact that he had keep me in mind work a half and forty six big opposite to what he's done with. Abe is great so far well and i laughed all last week because they had the stakes channel The tv's on. And so i've i've seen the kentucky jockey club as you have so many is even more than you. That's true that's true of the watching. Keep me in mind on this racetrack. And he's going to be running late himself. I didn't want to have to worry about that horse. And now he's kentucky. Jockey club is in the kentucky derby looked like it completely fell apart three this race. You know the one thing about the derby since they've changed that point system. You don't find these races collapsing like they used to. When you'd have those speed horses that got points and qualified. Because of their two year old exploits were in there. We really haven't had a meltdown taste situations or or and It remains to be seen how this is going to play out. That potential was there until caddo river came out And you know with the for the not going in with contra too so it'll be interesting to see if someone could come from from back in the pack like that. Sometimes you get these races. We have a lot of speed and everybody takes back and get someone. Loosen a leading. Sometimes you have a race. That doesn't look like this. Being the next thing you know four of the front end. So that's one of the factors that has handicapper and a fan or a handicap or any way. You plan there as you really have no control over once those doors. Open the first quarter mile you know. It's almost like anything can happen. And then the unexpected in sometimes are often does an hour. we're going to have have them lined up. We'll see if anybody gets their hands forced By the draw very good. mike welsh. Everybody diaw welsh and the clock a report. Of course the weekend clock a report friday and saturday and they're going to be. It's going to be friday and saturday full card. We're going to get as much as we can. And they're even on the under races for both days so and of course the just about everything in the in the oaks and the derby. We've seen at least once. Get your final thoughts. Maybe on thursday. Okay all right including some pics. I welsh mike. Welsh with a comprehensive derby oaks clocking report. We got about five or six minutes with james to take a look at today and maybe even ahead to tomorrow and i have looked at scratches yet james but I thought this. I thought this sequence this pick five sequence starting with that maiden special mile a quarter Was actually a very playable sequence to me. One thing about this racist at the number. Three happy american Last time out. I thought in the stretch of his last race he had james graham a choice to go inside or outside in that louisiana derby on Main special way and when he went inside he's such a big horse. I thought that hurt him. A little bit of stalled his momentum a little bit he wound up getting you know confining finding his best tried again late and got beat half land. he just looks like he's going to be awfully tough in there but he is a little bit of one run closer The horse that sorta interested me a little bit was cross. Checked now brendon. Walsh has been a little bit cold on number six but That horse show good spe- last time looks like you know he's a nyquist coal with all this pedigrees half brother to rely.

"This could be troubling for both of them out. Knock this kind of a hard race four weeks out. It's the one good thing about the florida derby well. There's a lot of good things about the florida derby but moving it to five weeks out i thought was a tremendous move and i think it's it's great for the horsemen to have that opportunity to have that extra week. I think it's a it's a. It's a plus not a detriment that extra week. I mean you know there was always that theory. Nobody had won the kentucky. Derby five weeks. Layoff before bob wrote did and The reason was nobody ran five weeks out. Every prep was four weeks out. They moved the florida derby five weeks out. And i'm sure. Brad and chad would love to have had another week coming off of that race. That being said you know it's hard to assess every horses is different. And it's hard to assess how that kind of a race affects them individually. Highly motivated had trained. Okay is last work. I thought his last mile was very strong. I would like to see him out. He looked good on the gallup out on the watch was just okay But now these come out of the work. I wasn't crazy about him this morning. galloping this morning so we're going to keep an eye on him the next couple of days. He certainly wasn't his strong wasn't a smooth this morning as he had been going into that last work so something to keep an eye on anyway i think he he may right below us I was with. I was standing with dave and he made a not not a noise. That horses make certain he coughed a little caught her to. It's just hard to say. what are you know. Maybe somebody kicked up a little dust and got into. I don't wanna make any off at all. Not at all do that. His galaxy wasn't as as impressive this morning as it had been last week. So we'll keep an eye on him tamar well and on that topic Let's shift to the california horses and my first question is on on hot rod. Charlie and gary young was the first to notice. We were out there kind of watching and watching. And he was waiting for a hot rod charlie to leave the pony and this was the second morning here. And did he ever gallup no. I don't think so. I think he just just stayed with the pony. The whole way around and then here. That is a question because you know doug usually gets kind of aggressive with these sources coming in here for the three derby. Even after they've had all their their works out the out in california. I was kind of expecting to see him gallup today. And then you know gallup real strong tomorrow. Those two minute licks doug does maybe blow them out a little bit down the lane. I'm sure not going to see that tomorrow but I don't know i agree. It was a little bit surprising. And just something that makes you want to keep your eye on him for the next couple of days and that. That's why we hear. The works are over. But there's still plenty to assassin. I think highly motivated in hot rod. Charlie two horses to keep an eye on the mark medina spirit first day galloping. I thought was really strong yesterday. They They cut kick back on him a little bit. I think they didn't want him to do too much two days in a row like that. I didn't really get to see him this morning so i can't make a call on when he did this one. I'm guessing again though that they didn't want him to do as much as he did. A couple of days ago maybe maybe tomorrow he will again but You know the california horses rocky world. Also you know pe- gallup this morning I thought his last work that i saw on tape was very very good. He's a big key to this race. Another one would only three starts but he could be loose on the lead. The scratch of cato river obviously a plus for him Middle be interesting to see what post he draws and You know how their hands are Whether their hands are tied with an inside drawer if they can get something outside he showed he didn't. He's not a need the lead kind horse in those two first two races although I guess he didn't get much dirt in his face dot time. You certainly didn't get dirt his face into santa anita derby so I think In a perfect world. John sadler would prefer to be loose on the lead. Again in here So he's always. You have to consider. I think all three california horses have to be considered Even hot rod. Charlie's coming in off the louisiana derby. He looked good in his work the other day too. But like you said we're going to have to keep an eye on him after he did not gallic tonight. A horse that That is certainly a bit of a local story. And there's very frequently in derby this story line Oh basis for greg. Foley actually had terry finley yesterday and know they've got. They've got a third of him and we talked about him but he's the field good horse and he's feeling good out there. Yeah i mean there's work. The other day was five furlongs on on paper but it was really a seven furlong work. I mean that was not a gallup out. That was a seven furlong work. They asked him pretty good around the turn and down to the backstretch and he responded in any look. Good doing it Watching them in the morning. He's not the smoothest mood there in the morning. either. I don't think You certainly have to consider as one of those horses in that same price level. That could probably get a piece A everything worked out right for him to trip. Wise so Yeah like you say. He is a feel-good horsey is a horse. That seems to be you know coming out of his last race. Well also wanted to keep an eye on again. I don't know the horse that that well to assassin How he goes in the morning or but the one work i did see was was very good. Let's round out the derby. Obviously there's nothing to talk about. What brooklyn strong until he gets here later today. Twelve hour van ride actually might be here earlier. Okay i think they all have to be here by eleven. That's right And then there's a some of the keeneland horses like the king and hidden stash. We have yet to really see in the morning yeah. I don't know what to make of that. We will have reports. I had Mike vesey over keeneland so in the clock report. Good for saturday. We will have reports on their works and the one you didn't mention i think is another in that jury is King fury yeah good to be the king right.

"Today that ran against Post up So i was going to be interested in seeing how she here. We go In an allowance race today the grade one lottery an and this ecorse along with the oaks are the two races toward the day to day. Pick six and the to all sixth grade ones on the same on the same ticket and they Move back. There's a lot going on in the watch ron because in addition to then and that's a two dollar and gary will explain that That ties The watchman the oaks the distaff the derby city distaff the former humanities staff the churchill downs the old forster and the derby and in fact gary palmisano breezes in So the day two dollar pick and the watch rian you know dunbar road and and She dares the dabbler are clearly. A lot of people rely on that pair right for sure and then you know paris lights as well as know little intriguing you know. She ran well last summer. Coming back You know has raised for motte eligible to Show the good effort but you know. She was under consideration last year for the Kentucky oaks but didn't come Wind up going alabama instead and Excited to see her back this year at age. Four and yeah pretty good match ups going be exciting dunbar. Road really You know she's been out there. Training with the searchers and the morning so you've got something in this race that is quite remarkable and dante three for three or two for to churchill she. There's the devil three for three. At churchill dunbar borrowed who won the shawnee one for one at churchill paris lights two for two at churchill finite for steve asmussen three three at church. I don't know if i've ever seen that in a stakes race to that degree. Yeah man and although sources online and you know they're coming in from other venues as well and run in the past definitely You know. I mean the race is is is clearly going to go through. She dare devil off of her last race at oaklawn. I thought that was a huge performance. I really thought she stamped herself as a stakes bound philly. when she won that allowance last summer churchill. She was brilliant that day And then her oaks. Race was terrific. So she's clearly the horse to be but You know once again you know you got some classy runners coming in and Not impossible it with somebody. Like dunbar road could step up and beat her. Well the the question. It becomes who who's going to put the pressure on from a pace standpoint and there are a couple of candidates. Beijing girl for own crichton has got speed and paris lights likes to draft off of a leader. So there there are. I mean she dares the clearly especially drawing the to all she clearly is going to go and actually ends tanti. She's a route going type. Her last two in the fall city to end the year as a three year old and india's airy near the lead. She showed more speed than she had earlier in her three-year-old year And being drawn down inside she's probably to want to at least be somewhat forward With with brian hernandez junior. You know have a decent position early so the the devils not going to have everything our own way. That's the that's the bottom line the bowels of course for the three year old fillies and This ended up. This ended up being a beneficiary of some as always is the case with these one turn three year old exclusive events. You know horses. That i don't wanna say washed out As types as oaks of or or in the case of boys derby types but you do have some some very nice ones that are either turning back like super sensational Who who cassie. And this is weber. Tried to make into a a to turn horse but her two best races clearly at that she ran badly in the fairgrounds oaks because she ran well but You know turns back to seven eighths You've got somebody like kelly brand with that. Nice slumber party Motte back with obligatory Day out of the office who. There were rumors that she was. You know. really not not right but Her work tab starting in march and tampa got very aggressive and very sharp so this is the right spot for her. You know i mean. She ran such a she to me like an breeders. Cup juvenile fillies. I was really surprised to see her a give way like she did that day. look like She had it The the summer party. I thought that bad break last time herder at keeneland but i really liked the resolve that she showed to still finish up. Well i think she'll improve upon that stakes effort. She's very definitely intriguing to me. Well and then on the outside we should note. Going especially going seven eighths. And i'm anxious to see what marty decides. But louis i as gets a. I try on caramel swirl. Who was so impressive breaking her maiden at keeneland a couple of weeks ago and she's in the outside box where the air is fresh and clear. So we'll watch her a very good edition of the twin spires turf sprint Which is not surprising and fire of course came up in conversation yesterday. The albatros any Robert massie yellow Frisian fire gelding makes his seasonal debut. And he comes in with a five race win streak but this is a good group. Yeah both eight bells and the twin spires star spraying. I thought came up with really good. Betting races No overwhelming favourite. Either spot diamond. Dupes makes a seasonal Appearance seasonal debut for patrick being gone and Of course was back and forth the off. some turfan came here last year and won this race Really big rush up the rail to win day. I thought that was really really terrific performance. Good fast boat back to fast boat. the city zip a veteran for radd grady and joe sharp qatari on the outside. And then you get to the kentucky oaks. So there's a glance at the stakes card for friday and james. So we could do this. We could We could incorporate Our man gerry. We got You got two choices. Yeah there you go. James slapped the the headset on Runway this is there you go. Luckily most of us are are are most of us are somewhat haired deprived lately. We're certainly not going. We're not going the other way. So the so. The headset doesn't Doesn't affect us too badly. Gary palmisano junior morning. How we doing global thank you i. Nobody's saying happy champions day yet but Soon enough i hear you. I chatted the sunshine out there Fast and firm. So we're going to be a nice day of racing kickoff derby week we're excited The the isaac murphy added in And become a you know. Become a you know. A regular part of the derby week festivities You mentioned the sun shining weatherwise. We should mention we were gonna move.

"You'll see the details. And i talked to pete tomorrow actually so There's an opportunity for you to go out there for everybody to go out there and see it. So it's very very cool james. Pick that mike and We'll We'll we'll get started there. We go James scully good. Morning morning steve. I should also mention going out there. there's there's a couple of other things that that i ran into a new one that i'd been to zachary taylor to the ever. Been zachary taylor's grave. I have not been very cool. zachary taylor probably the least well almost the least known presently. The he was in office maybe a year or so And then he got sick he got sick off of some bad cherries and yeah swallowed a cherry pit or something and and ended up getting sick and died But he was also a great is also a great military hero but his grave is is out that way on brownsboro road. I've been out there once before and it's a it's a military cemetery. It's quite something. And i'll put pictures of that up to. I always go to cave hill. To and i'm in town. Which is the most incredible. I just see the drive out. Brownsboro rove you know mobile is awesome. And you're right. I mean there are. There are like some new subdivisions going up but none of them like that. I've seen just driving out there. Like right on the road. You know you have to drive down in there. There's a lot of A lot of new stuff happened in but a lot of the past you know seems like just the same as has been for decades and decades and decades. When you draw out that way it one thing that i that i saw and same thing right on brownsboro and i've seen i've seen science for this before and i never yesterday when i was driving back. I thought you know what i'm gonna be ender and maybe come up the river from that side. And i'd seen the signs for locust grove before you've been to locust grove i have not been Just know the race while the the reason that much like. I told this is much less horrifying than the jenny wiley. Okay you know the story. Oh my god not not not to sound too much. Like like like david on on jets creek but Oh my god look it up. You'll be horrified. It's the day on race for. I mean it's great. That i guess that they. It's great that they honor her. What happened to her when god. It's it's insane. it's it's nuts. I'll you and you'll be horrified. Locust grove is much nicer. Because it's the homestead of george clark of lewis and clark thing and this this is their their their family their family home and and when clark laid around ended up living out his life with his sister and brother-in-law at locust grove. It is just. It's just spectacular spectacular. Couldn't tore the house to yesterday because The mondays mondays and tuesdays are closed. But it's a national historic site. And it i. I mean i'd seen driven by it for years. I knew what it was. But i didn't ever go and so yesterday said you know what then i then. I ended up on the river. The louisville boat club. who knew I it's unbelievable water. What about the waterworks. Yeah i mean it's incredible down there just That below bo club is is wonderful. They have other Some other like you know a bow clubs. Docs down there and Just it's awesome and can't beat the views as far as those presidents graves. So you know my colleague vance hansen. I think he's he. He's that's part of his mission like i'm sure he's been the zachary taylor he's been to like over half of the presidential graves like throughout the us and he's like made trips just to see him. So i definitely He'd be a good person to talk to you about that. History vance hansen. As as as we as we've laid out many times with his nickname the quietest asan still waters run deep. He's the most interesting the most guy that that you never hear from Because he's just so focused and reserved and we'll get we gotta get vance's. Yeah push this week. I'm going to do that. I'm glad I'm glad you mentioned that's cool. I got a now. I i got a million things i can discuss. Forget it i mean. We'll say we can't do it there because it'll be too much all right Let's shift gears and get a few thoughts. We'll talk a little bit about the thursday or tuesday and wednesday cards in a minute but first of all some some instant read off of yesterday's Oat straw not that you know. Positional is all that important but You know what your you know. What's your early read fridays feature. Well thought that the draw tell well for travel. Call it you know. I look at her travel column and search results. both those phillies have good tactical foot Might not be on the the lead. It looks like perhaps abbas grace wilson from the gay but if she didn't go travel call more search results could be potentially setting the pace the way. There's just no real clear cut speed in there and being post six travel call and post twelve researchers alz. I thought that post helped both of them. I think it's top heavy oaks. Because you know i look malathion and Clear and beautiful end crazy. Beautiful all three of those phillies are contenders. In my i especially malathion clear air and none none of the three or pace dependent. They've all won graded stakes behind like real slow paces They might not get an ideal setup. But i think they're going to be able to sit close enough and i just think you know like the derby you get past the central quality and it gets to be a little bit of I wouldn't say it's top heavy after essential quality but the oaks a little bit different Where the top five in. There are extremely formidable. i. I won't argue and And i frankly have have somewhat Discounted the arkansas. Yeah the secret police. Parole and avis grace. Yeah and and a little bit even clairiere and and travel column at just because search results and moffat just. They just seem to me to be that much. That much more imposing what has what has transpired is a couple of phillies. That have looked really good in the morning and anxious to hear from mike.

They get that horse. Phya running in your home and you know he. He won on soft ground at laurel. Less beat maryland-breds. And you really didn't handle it. You could see. He was struggling. He he's really likes it firm and you know against better horses. You'd be nervous. Said maybe he wouldn't be as successful. He's such an eye source and he's been working up the storms. I know they're really excited about that. They're going to be there. So i hope that the weather cooperates you. Well i think they're okay When's the race friday. Yeah you should be right there. This is the institution that can redeem itself and they need to start by asking himself. How can we be better neighbors? So this Adjacent community and to the very one way she thinks they could do better is by dumping a tradition, she says, is rooted in racism.

"The victory ride kicks off the stakes action here at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon grade three early in the caught has just the feel of five phillies. GOING TO GO Six and a half furlongs as for the three year old's warning line favors one francs. Rock Cat Hall of Famer Bill Will Give Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez a leg up and this phillies done very little wrong on her career. She's three for seven. With four second-place finishes ran second in a couple of graded stakes, including the grade one spin away up at Saratoga last year last seen winning a third level allowance optional claimer. She uses stakes. Winner took the any limit kick off three year old season three starts back. and. Probably the only reason that this race isn't later in the card is that it's a five Horsfield and Franks? Rakhat is three to five on the morning line, and she may be the the loan speed in race, so she's going to be tough to beat at three to five, but that's a pretty short price, considering there some pretty good up and coming phillies near now I think number four center. I'll I'm going to give her another shot for. For Chad Brown and Joel Rosario Sheila Great Getting Her Maiden Win Gulfstream Park, when bet down to three to five at the end of March then came back in a tough allowance race at Churchill downs where she was really over bet, she was three to five that day against another very impressive maiden winner of this one for Steve Asmussen in casual casual ran a great race that day center I'll had all sorts of problems. She didn't break that well. She had trouble during the race, and she was just really never in at any point. I think it's a racy can kind of draw a line through? If she runs closer to the way she did and her debut. I think she's the one that could give Franks rock cat. The biggest problem Franks rocket will probably get the lead I would think Rosario would have center I'll sitting justin behind her and seeing if they can outgun into the line going six and a half furlongs. With you I'm going to take a shot with center. Rile planner. If? When I plan! Early took five tomorrow I will use both Franks rocket and center, but I'll tell you what I think. You can make a case also for up in smoke was undefeated and sprints. She's four five and a career. Lone blemish came when George Weaver tries to stretch her out Hollywood wildcat. Go at Gulfstream Park. She's raced exclusively of Gulfstream, in fact, steady diet once. Once a month February march April may June now. She gets a race in July. Here over Big Sandy, she wanted the game face overboard last time out for weaver Rod Ortiz Junior. Who wrote her in her debut against fellow Florida breads down at Gulfstream Park's in the climb back aboard for the first time. Since that day looks, you'll need a little help up front if Franks, rockets able to set an easy pace I. She's going to be very very tough. I think Senator I'll be the first one to come calling. Those are the two up in smoke. If you're looking to three deep, I don't think you need to center for Bobby and I race number three goes as the great three six and a half for a long victory ride go to the end of the card. Eleven race card like I said earlier, and the final four races make up an all stakes pick four, and it starts in reasoning with the greed three poker. Flat Mile on the turf for many years. This was the fourth of July staple. On the naira calendar here it is now as part of a super five stakes card. In, the poker though. On the widener, so they come out of that shoot. On the clubhouse turn we get a field of eight entered for the turf as a main track. Only it's all relevant with the way. The weather's been here. I would imagine you know there's supposed to be some rain. We're recording the show Friday afternoon supposed to be some rains rather day on Friday and into the evening. I can't imagine it enough to take this off the turf, so let's say it will be a field of eight.

"To Churchill Downs in talk with their own Paul miles to get the skinny on what exactly it feels like out there on what would have been Kentucky Derby one forty six meanwhile what's happening with another signature industry here in Kentucky no doubt this time you're the one thing that rings true to everyone's heart as much as horses that's Bourbon and joining us this morning from the president of the Kentucky distillers association would be Eric Gregory good morning Sir good morning well today wonderful thank you Eric and we did go over here today because as we mentioned this is Kentucky signature one of six Kentucky signatures industries I want to ask a bunch of things but first I want to ask you how bad has the covert nineteen pandemic hit Bourbon tourism in Kentucky well all of our visitors centers and gift shop eight rooms centers have been closed now for well over a month so you know it that that's a pretty good financial that not only for our distilleries port communities that rely on Bourbon tourism especially global as the official starting place of the Kentucky Bourbon trail but R. I think my biggest concern is the impact on our smaller craft distilleries because they really rely on that revenue and that face to face contact with the consumers and visitors to get their brains out you know they may not have all the big large distribution channels that are a larger distillery does but that's where a lot of our concerns are right now we're talking with their Gregory president of the Kentucky distillers association if you want more information by the way you can visit K. Y. Bourbon dot com in talking about on this first Saturday may day that's pretty big for Bourbon now we've heard Eric we've heard stories that alcohol consumption is up during covert nineteen pandemic what he's seen as far as Bourbon sales well it feels you're right you are a end up significantly because people are having to you know cocktails at night and and hopefully drinking responsibly and staying healthy at home the the biggest area where we're gonna see a downturn obviously are what's called on premise sales in the industry language that means your restaurants and bars being closed but luckily in the legislative session one the last thing that that was passed was a law that has from the relief efforts for the corona virus and it allowed our restaurants and bars partners and even our distilleries to sell cocktails to go so hopefully that will make up for a little bit a lost revenue not only on the distillery staff especially for my partners in the restaurant and bar is business that have been closed as well that's outstanding in fact I was gonna ask about that it was that house bill four fifteen this was part of the the cope it really really package and I believe that was either helpless and build one fifty got it okay well that I'm glad you mentioned that because that segue nicely into my next question tell us a little bit about the Kentucky general assembly's house bill four fifteen that recently passed yeah that was a big issue for this that's the session and it started last that you're actually when our friends in the wine industry from California of California came in and we wanted to create what we call it commerce so that your build ability to order wine on the internet or by the telephone or you know some other electronic means and have it shipped directly to your state and we said Hey that sounds great we'd like Bourbon to be there too there was a little bit of a heavy lift last there shouldn't being a short session so I've got to come in and reps are indicating the licensing occupations committee and the house leadership mainly when the session ended last year they started a task force that got together and met often and solicited input from virtually every state cold in this issue which resulted in house before fifteen so now starting in mid July you'll be able to order wine beer or spirits online from your favorite the producer and I have them shipped to Kentucky yes where's your shipping is from a reciprocal state all fantastic that's great news again talking with their Gregory president the Kentucky distillers association for more information you can visit K. Y. Bourbon dot com Eric we're looking at a shortage of hand sanitizer if you will around people are struggling find trying to find this but in fact if they go to K. Y. Bourbon dot com you actually have an entire directory where people can buy from distilleries that's right it's been a saving grace for especially are smaller distilleries the that quickly transitioned from from making fifty or spirits to making hand sanitizer and even our large distilleries started making it in bulk and distributing it to hospitals and first responders police fire hospice care and donating so far it's probably close to a hundred fifty thousand gallons across the state wow and the smarter stories have started selling it now to businesses as they seek to re open because it's going to be one of it is one of the governor ten requirement that you have hand sanitizer stations if you're a business and you're going to re open and.

"When I walked in to Churchill Downs and looked at those buyers I was glad that I decided to do this and spend the day at the races and my wife even won a couple races and if I'd bet two races I would have won two more we actually would have done pretty well but she won enough that we paid for were it mission and our cab ride so are you can't beat that yeah she but it's more than I do I as I said I hate I just have a I just have an aversion to gambling you know I'm a very logical kind of person and so gambling just doesn't make a lot of sense on like you know what I you know what I could do with the money they gamble I could do things like this some people blow two or three hundred dollars your betting on a race track I see okay that's fine well I use that money to go to the race track in another state so that's the way I think about it but I had such a great day at the races it was so cool and I was so happy because it really was everything I hoped it would be the weather was nice the track look great I could feel the history it was a fun little egg that venture just to go on to spend the day when we got home it's like okay what did we do today there was just a fun experience it's one of those things to put down on that page of things that you did in in a specific here this is what I'm talking about it may sound elaborate or crazy but it was neither it was very doable and it was worth it and it was fun and I got to see something I've always wanted to see Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky and I got to fill another page in those three hundred sixty five pages that we get every year to fill up with fun and interesting experiences and memories and I will have my Churchill Downs experience and memory etched in my mind that I could I guess what I'm looking for now to watching the Kentucky Derby next year in may just ago remember those stairs I saw those stairs up I remember seeing that paddock I was there there there and there are those buyers I don't use it when I take pictures when I would go on vacation location I rarely put myself in the picture that's what you're supposed to do in this world today I understand that look at me but I rather take a picture of it the way I see it so I remember it that way I don't mean I know I was there I don't need to tell everyone there are some places that you do want if you go to the Eiffel Tower I understand and I've done that yeah I did it here there's some places I don't take a picture of myself at all I took a picture of the scenery or the sites them themselves as I saw them so that's my memory I used the photo as my memory but there are some times when I go no no I need to be I need to have that that site that I wanted to see with me in a picture and so yeah I did and you've got my Facebook page and look around June twenty second or so no not that that was one picture I did take of the twin towers in the background and I was so glad I went and as I said there's a lot of stuff out there to you can do folks it's just taking the time and the effort to do it and making that list I have a list on my computer places that we want to see and sites that we want to see I don't know if we'll see them all but the list is there and there's nothing better than the check off another thing on that list and just so you know yes my goal is to do my own Triple Crown so I want to go to Baltimore and see the Pimlico race track where the priestesses and then I want to go to Belmont racetrack in New York and that's where the Belmont stakes is the last crown jewel of the of the Triple Crown so I'm not gonna go to see the actual races because those are too crazy in terms of people in crowds but I do want to go to where those races are because there is still history there even though that race isn't happening that day was all have my own little Triple Crown that's one of my goals is to see the three tracks of the triple crown so I've already got the first jul I want to do them in order just the way the horses run them the fun stuff you do this the way you create your own little thing so you know what we want to Churchill Downs and that's for the Kentucky Derby is is the first race underground so that's the first place we go so now we have to make a plan a trip to Baltimore to go to Pimlico where the priestesses and then after Pimlico we have to plan a trip to New York and see the Belmont racetrack where the Belmont Stakes is run and I will have then my Triple Crown I'm no secretariat but I'm still always run for the.

"I just laughed early. We're not opening. It can't be you know they might my my favorite great story on. This front is at Churchill downs. You got it yeah. I think it's a test we were. We were Churchill Rachel. Was this a breeders cup. We we were at Churchill I think and we had we had tornado warning and we have to evacuate the building. Everybody had to go down to the second floor that that that one was a classic and I kept trying to say you know can I can we do in a broadcast and they said no yeah the they said No. You have to leave the way at the V eight the we have to basically stop the show turn our attention to the the the reason we're all here and that's betting and yeah and handle wise and program wise there. There are the the new wrinkles every a year you know one thing of course that people well received the naira bets pick five being opened up to the to all eighty ws into all platforms which immediately saw the predictable fum influx flocks yeah but it served its purpose I it was being used as a marketing tool for Nyra pets for those for those two years basically for years or hesitant to put in a lake pick five pick four is such a popular bet here so the always concerned about cannibalization this internal conversations so we launched it as a kind of a unique aspect of naira bats it made sense as a marketing vehicle but feel like it played itself out at least I did and <hes> so we opened add up and now we've been talking about the pick six recently which gets a lot of feedback in what do we want to do and there's been a lot of talk on twitter. I monitor it and you know when you play in with the betting menu. It's delicate. It's a fun conversation. I've had countless one conversations with Serlin over dinner over stuff so what we have is. What is the public really want? Do they want one. The other are both one of the things about the pick six if you change it you if you're going to keep a different version of it because I've heard that like why would you get rid of the two dollar one for the Jackpot or why wouldn't you just offer both you'd actually have have to put one on a separate card but I was going through this last time. Is that the worst thing in the world. Keep the two dollar on a separate card bringing the Jackpot and something throughout the group today well where and where do we because the option is out there. But where are we start the meat. I mean we're we're. We don't have final approval for the Jackpot. Pick six something we've been working on the rules for a long time in New York every state's no force but the gaming commission yeah. We're we're. We're at the finish line so we would likely get this during the meat. Would we introduce it during the question <hes> that's something we're swirling <unk> be crazy to do that. We re. It's kind of the best place to test something like that because you've got ah there is a time stamp of the of the seven weeks yeah and you want and you'll you'll get action in it and you could actually potentially force it out more often. Make it fun but then there's the classic pick six. There's there's something to that. I mean there's a tradition to it and we're kind of like the last one exactly so does it does it harm anything to to leave that on the side and let people play as well. That's something I'm going to challenge group with now. That's tough for the marketing folks tough for the mutual folks get a little confusing. What do you call these things but I think it's something that I'm going to ask them to take a look at or I'm going to get some feedback from talking about on the show? Absolutely what I'm really looking for..
