"Going to be a fascinating new era for this team. It seems like. Oh yeah. In boxing, there was an absolutely shocking upset on Saturday night when Dimitri beeville won a unanimous decision over the guy some people call the biggest star in the sport. Canelo Álvarez. Matt, this was Alvarez's first loss since 2013 when he was 23 years old and lost to Floyd Mayweather. What happened? Yeah, first, it's worth noting that after we were just talking about Russia and Ukraine that B vol, who is Russian, was not allowed to display his nation's flag or have his national anthem played at the arena in Las Vegas prior to this fight on Saturday night. And as for the fight itself, Alvarez has been dominant in the super middleweight division of a 168 pounds, but he was fighting at a 175 pounds here. So that is one caveat to keep in mind. And had he won as expected Alvarez was supposed to face off next with Gennady Golovkin in a highly anticipated showdown, but now it could be headed toward the old Alvarez beeville rematch. You know, after the fight, Alvarez said quote, boxing is like that. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose, but always with your head held high. I believe that we offered to the people a great fight. We will fight again and we will win. So yeah, I'm into a rematch. Well, we can not leave today without talking about one more ridiculous upset from this weekend. That was, of course, in The Kentucky Derby on Saturday when rich strike, a cult, with only one win on his resume, won the race as an 80 to one long shot. You know, after a horrible end to last year's Kentucky Derby where Medina spirits title is strict after the horse failed a drug test, we needed to feel good story like this. I don't know about you. And just listen to the sheer joy in the voice of trainer Eric read after the race. I fell down the paddock when he hit the wire passed out. I'm so happy. This is something that, you know, is the reason everybody does this because we're not supposed to be here, but I knew this horse loved the track and you've been training so good all year. There are so many amazing things to say about one of the greatest upsets in sports history. This is a horse that was claimed for very little money. Written by a jockey who had never won a graded stakes race and raised by a trainer who once lost 23 horses to a barn fire. On top of that, rich strike only got a spot in the race because colt named ethereal road was scratched from the race Friday morning. During the race itself, rich streak was behind 17 horses heading into the far turn. Before making an incredible late push. And as an 80 to one long shot, the people who did bet on rich strike, well, struck at rich. Including a woman named Heather green who, as the Philadelphia inquirer reported, was going to bet on ethereal road, then opted for his replacement instead saying, quote, heck with it. Give me 21. She put down $10 and ended up walking away with a cool 818 bucks. Not too bad. Literally every bad gambling decision I've ever made in my life has been preceded by the phrase to heck with it, but I'm very glad it worked out for her. Me too. The next race in the Triple Crown, the Preakness, is on May 21st. At the center is currently the favorite to win, followed by zanden, and then our new unsung hero, rich strike. Non alcoholic mint juleps for everyone, tiff. Woohoo. All right, that's it for today from wondering I'm Tiffany osinski. And I'm Matt strow. Thanks for listening. In fact, one of my best Friends in high school was a guy named Kenny Hartley. I used a white guy who was conservative. This guy loved Ronald Reagan. I hated Ronald Reagan. And you know, we would just debate and argue about it all the time, but we were friends. You know, I really miss that. I miss that feeling that you could just debate and disagree without disrespecting each other. And I just want to bring that back. And that is the point of the uncommon ground podcast. "I'm Michael Barr I'm scarlet fu And I'm Mike lynch Coming up today we're speaking with Bill Costanza and chief executive officer of Churchill downs who has a lot to say about the 148th running of The Kentucky Derby joining us is Bill Welcome Bill Thanks Mike It's great to be here All right so as the CEO do you get goosebumps like other people do I mean going into this week I still do It's a busy week but it's a labor of love So I'm as excited as most of the fans So yeah I get goosebumps I love doing what I do And that's true for most of our team This is a lot of fun A lot of work but a lot of fun and it always feels it always feels good when it comes off successfully I know the work for 2022 Derby probably started within an hour after the 2021 Derby What's on your checklist going into the final few days before post time So many things on the front side it's just making sure people can get in and out of the facility make sure we have all the people we need to provide the service that our guests expect making sure the horses are here that they're being monitored that they're safe that they're ready to go trying to control just about everything we can think of to control and trying not to worry about the thing we can't control which is always the weather We run an outdoor event So a lot of our guests are undercover they're in nice areas high end areas but ultimately this is an outdoor event in the horses run in The Rain or the shine and a lot of our guests buy general admissions passes so they're out there they take the weather as it comes And as much as over the years you try to learn to not be concerned about things you can't control just prepare for whatever to happen That's always the thing in the last 24 hours we talk about the most But I guess that means also we've gotten all the things we need to get done There's going to be a different vibe this year because of COVID last year I think your capacity was maxed out at around 50 51,000 What do you expecting for this Derby The number one 48 We're going to be back to pre COVID protocols and expectations So I think a good number to think of for our event is around one 50 if I had to take the under or the over I take the over on that So we're expecting a full house with the enthusiasm and the excitement that we've seen every year up through 2019 we had a bit of a disruption as the rest of the country did because of COVID I think we're going to be looking at big numbers And I said on our earnings call a week or so ago I think we're looking at all of the financial metrics Attendance at the end of the day is impacted a little bit because we always have a fair amount of walk ups people that make a game day decision of whether they want to come or not and part of that calculus they run is what does the weather look like that day So if it turns out to be strong weather then it will be a gigantic crowd if it turns out where we might have some rain in the forecast in the Ohio River valley is always always iffy right up to the last minute But if it looks like we might have some rain then you see some people don't show up but I think we're looking at one 50 minimum and maybe more depending on good weather A build my co host Michael barrow had a little trouble getting out of the gate when the bell sounded but he's currently in last place but he's in the race and he's joining us now Michael welcome aboard Say hi to Bill Hi How are you I threw his shoe and then everything just went all the pieces here Well it's nice to meet you via via telephone here Mike and I have been having fun so far Oh I've been hearing it Thank you for your patience And I know you're on a clock but I do have something on my mind about Churchill down It's the history of the track itself That always excited me I mean I think if so many of the Triple Crown winners went from secretariat winning the first leg there affirmed I can go on The history itself of the track can you tell us what that means and how do you approach that for people coming to the track to say hey you see what we're all about This is Derby 148 and so the track started in 1875 and ran the first Derby in 1875 and it's been run continuously every single year since that time So we're the longest continually run sporting events in the United States And our facility has changed and morphed over time over time A lot of times when people think of Churchill downs.

"The last four races saturday at churchill down will kick things off with race. Eight is claiming fifty k. For six and a half furlongs. It's a big failure field eleven so it gives us plenty of vetting opportunities here. I mean you look at a rate of a car by this or a sequence like this when you have you know eleven horses here in the ninth race. You've got twelve horses in the next race. You've got a smaller field of six. Which is semi chaki in of course race eleven you go twelve deep and so i mean there's plenty opportunity here but also makes our jobs very difficult so i guess. How did you approach. I raised in who you like. This is a shitty little race kicks off at noon. That's why would deepen this lake is. It's like it feels like the one kick you out right to the in five to start it off. I basically went deep in three legs. Single him in one and i just think that's the only way you can play this at least for my handicapping skills. This this was very very difficult situation. I went to five six eight eleven. I'll i'll talk about my top to kick it over you. There jared because i know we got a lot more choices. Five six eight eleven. So you did. I did the same other. Deny that the fourth. So i'll talk about two-dozen let you go Intact backup Number five was horse. That i put on top big reason i see now. We'll we'll see what you said on. This is what. I see a lot of pace in this race and i think a sar is one of the better closers in here live cutback and i don't mind that. I think the worst you know might might need a little bit of a cutback tyler gap. Leon road glass timeout stays aboard. Once again here mike maker very hot at churchill. Downs right now. So i i thought the five was when he certainly needed to use I'll go to the number. Two extreme force for steve asmussen ricardo santana board. Last time out this level got the by five and three quarter lengths and that by cadre that forces decent to back you know again. It was same kind of conditions. Same distance close beaten a length and three quarters and then three back broke his maiden at this distance. It's in houston. So i thought he was another one he had to us. I think he can kind of sit in that third or fourth place spot and if those horses start to come back to him a little bit maybe he just gets. I run on the leaders. That are kind of coming back to the to the five or my top to you. Yeah that's Actually end same order to island five to six. Those are my top three in I played two tickets here as you can see on the screen. I did a five dollar ticket. And my you know pressing my opinions a little bit there in the two five and six or hawaii earth to five six to five to six in that order preference is who i went with. And i'm with you on the five is seems like the cutback is going to be right with this horse. Wants a you've got to thinking of Ran a good race last time out the same level. Just you could tell the distance just maybe a little much Get gas back and of course might make your train obviously is very good churchill. Run for the Roses effort, hadn't said much about Medina spirit and didn't expect to see many reporters around his bar and ahead of Derby. I'm sure I won't see you the rest of league, but I appreciate you guys coming by talking to me. Oh, you have to go back to the days when there's hardly anybody here. At the 15 to 1 colt changed the narrative with a half length win in the run for the Roses to give Baffert his seventh Kentucky Derby. The most in history came in under the radar, and I just know I want to come in here bragging or anything like that. You know, horsemen getting beat, you know, and so for him to win just happened, you know, so Heavily favored essential

My <Speech_Music_Male> your kitchen gives <Speech_Music_Male> me exiled <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Female> <Speech_Female> but then actually <Speech_Female> my college daughter <Speech_Female> has one in <Speech_Female> her sorority house. <Speech_Music_Female> We gotta get <Speech_Music_Female> an earful. Her we've gotta get near <Speech_Female> fire. I'm like all right <Speech_Female> fine. We'll get an air. <Speech_Female> I <SpeakerChange> use that <Speech_Female> twice a day. <Speech_Female> It's <Speech_Female> so easy <Speech_Female> it's so <SpeakerChange> healthy <Speech_Female> and it's <Speech_Female> yeah <Speech_Female> bob. Everybody <Speech_Female> needs an air fire. And <Speech_Female> it's worth <SpeakerChange> it's <Silence> worth the clutter on your counter <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> to check that out. <Speech_Male> I've heard about them. <Speech_Male> La people to <Speech_Male> your point like once <Speech_Male> you get one. People <Speech_Male> are really passionate <Speech_Female> about their air. Fryer <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> <Speech_Female> i can't believe i'm saying <Speech_Female> this. Okay i'm having <Speech_Female> it myself. <SpeakerChange> Well we're <Speech_Music_Male> having this conversation. <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> It's <Speech_Male> funny it's <Speech_Male> curious. <Speech_Male> You know you. <Speech_Male> You obviously come in <Speech_Male> contact with a lot of brands. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> i don't feel <Speech_Male> like you're obligated <Speech_Male> the say the brands that <Speech_Male> you work with <Speech_Male> but just curious as <Speech_Male> a person you <Speech_Male> probably interact with a lot of <Speech_Male> brands yourself like you buy <Speech_Male> stuff you <Speech_Male> watch. What's going <Speech_Music_Male> on around the around. The world <Speech_Male> are there any <Speech_Male> brands or companies <Speech_Male> or or causes <Speech_Male> that you follow <Speech_Male> you think other people <SpeakerChange> should be <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> taken notice. Oh <Speech_Female> yeah. I think <Speech_Female> i'm going to answer that with <Speech_Female> the 'cause question <Speech_Female> and so <Speech_Female> you know i think <Speech_Female> our next generation <Speech_Female> is <Speech_Female> really really <Speech_Female> really important <Speech_Female> And so <Speech_Female> actually served <Speech_Female> for seven years <Speech_Music_Female> on <Speech_Music_Female> the board of directors <Speech_Female> of a <Speech_Female> Domestic violence <Speech_Female> shelter here <Speech_Male> in louisville. <Speech_Male> And i learned a <Speech_Female> lot about <Speech_Female> how the <Speech_Female> secondary effects <Speech_Female> of <Speech_Female> witnessing trauma <Speech_Female> right. So if <Speech_Female> you're a child <Speech_Female> in your watching <Speech_Female> bad things happen <Speech_Female> between your parents <Speech_Music_Female> But that <Speech_Female> actually is is <Speech_Female> it happens <Speech_Male> in any form <Speech_Male> of violence <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> and so <Speech_Female> protecting children <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> against <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> violence <Speech_Female> directly <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> and then <Speech_Male> the like <Speech_Female> generational repeat <Speech_Female> of that <Speech_Female> right so <Speech_Female> the indirect impact <Speech_Female> is if they're <Speech_Female> seeing violence <Speech_Female> all the time even if <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> the violence is not against <Speech_Female> them <Speech_Female> the impact <Speech_Female> of that when they become <Speech_Female> adults is <Speech_Female> pretty awful <Speech_Female> on. So that's <Speech_Female> preventative. <Speech_Female> things that can <Speech_Female> happen or <Speech_Female> actions. That can be taken <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> protect kids <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> and help <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> them recover from that <Silence> that they've <Speech_Female> seen as a child <Speech_Female> so that they don't <Speech_Female> repeat that in <Speech_Female> the next generation <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> Some pre passionate <Speech_Male> about that. 'cause <Speech_Male> the to mazing <Speech_Male> last <Speech_Male> question for you <Speech_Male> curious as you <Speech_Male> think about marketers <Speech_Male> and marketing. <Speech_Male> What's <Speech_Male> your thought on like debatable <Speech_Male> largest opportunity <Speech_Male> or the biggest <Speech_Male> threat <Speech_Male> facing <SpeakerChange> marketers <Speech_Female> today. <Speech_Female> Socially i think it's the same <Speech_Female> thing so <Speech_Female> the biggest threat <Speech_Female> is clearly. <Speech_Female> I think complacency <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> right so the world <Speech_Female> is changing <Speech_Female> so quickly <Speech_Female> and the consumer <Speech_Female> is changing too. <Speech_Female> You know what their <Speech_Female> expectations are. <Speech_Female> And <Speech_Female> if you don't adapt <Speech_Female> your product <Speech_Female> or your service over <Speech_Male> time so <Speech_Male> that it continues <Speech_Male> to meet people's <Speech_Female> needs <SpeakerChange> in meaningful <Speech_Female> ways <Speech_Female> right. Maybe the air <Speech_Female> friars an example of <Speech_Female> that. You're <Speech_Female> gonna become obsolete <Speech_Female> and your product <Speech_Female> or service isn't going to be needed <Speech_Female> anymore. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> And so if <Speech_Female> you flip that around <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> that's a huge <Speech_Female> opportunity <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> stay <Speech_Female> relevant <Speech_Female> and become <Speech_Female> the next <Speech_Female> evolve your product <Silence> or your service <Speech_Female> to <Speech_Female> become the <Speech_Female> next most important <Speech_Male> thing in people's <Speech_Male> lives. <Speech_Male> Kristen <Speech_Male> you so much <SpeakerChange> for coming <Speech_Female> on the show today. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> Thank you for having me. <Speech_Female> <Advertisement> This was fun. <Speech_Music_Female> I

"And so you know of one hundred and seventy thousand. People that are on site during our highest attended. Event probably wanted to market to maybe five thousand of those and we can place their branding in the appropriate places where that is one hundred percent efficient and effective. And so if you were in the infield you had no idea who are private jet partner was because you weren't in their target market you know and and that's something that super unique for us because of how distinctive our facility is with the different spaces and there really is a party for everyone so whether you want to reach everyone for your brand or whether you are specifically targeted on one end of the economic spectrum or the other we can make it work. I'm sure a number of cmo's and marketers listening to this conversation. What advice would you give them like if they're focused on either identifying or negotiating a partnership deal. What advice do you have you know about. My fellow salespeople will hate me for this but insists on that type of joint planning right. We are not in this for the short haul at all and you should not be either right. If you're going to form a relationship that is going to elevate your brand. You want that you wanna look at that as almost like a marriage and you wanna make sure that you are truly buying what you need and not just buying what someone is trying to sell you and so you know all of that exploration upfront and clearly defining the goals upfront and even the measures of success upfront. To whatever degree you can is very very important because you know what happens if you don't is your two years into something and somebody's gonna ask justify spend and if you if you haven't free established what those targets are. That's going to be a problem. So you really have to think to the future in the very beginning a partnership great advice. We've already i wanna switch gears and get to know you a little bit better..

"Doing at home. Bourbon tastings right and so. That's you know bourbon. Bourbon is also something pre covid or related to covid. That is a burgeoning opportunity for people to engage with separate from derby. And so you kind of put bourbon derby together which is a natural fit and it gets even bigger and more amplified and you can do it at home if you wanna stay in your yoga pants you can. If you've been in your yoga pants for twelve months in you're sick of it you can dress up right. People dress up at derby parties at home. You wear hats you wear the clothing vineyard. Vines is a great example of that partnership is is you know decade long at this point and people they sell not just people coming to the derby. They sell that line of clothing to people that are wearing it to celebrate. Many many other places beyond at the racetrack. Well i mean yeah. It's like the extension for sure and no one would ever look at the pandemic as a as a bright spot but maybe this helped codify some of these extensions for you guys in for your partners thinking about how to extend things further. Yeah i don't think it's a bright spot but you know. I think we've definitely done a good job making lemonade out of lemons. We would rather not happen for a whole host of reasons you know. When we last talked you mentioned cross collaborations partners teaming up to to do things together. Any examples come to mind as it relates to how the that's taking place here. We always try to do that. And back in the day. When people could travel we would get together and do annual partner summits where we would you know explore the ways in which our partners could work together. But you know this year. It's it's taking largely a digital format and and we do have some great examples like coca-cola in kroger so created a virtual game. That consumers can play on their phones. And you're basically you're racing the race track as from jockey's perspective and you're winning kroger prizes weekly so on our opening night with our bugler. So we have a steve bottom as the official track bugler and he's actually gonna play on opening night and on derby day kind of live in competition with vans and so what has happened. So far is leading up to these live. Competitions with steve which is kinda cute and creative and interesting and fun and then we also have a collaborative promotion with smithfield in four. It's a bet on bacon twitter promotion and basically you're You have the opportunity to win a mustang. You've got all my favorite things. Now you've have bourbon bacon. I like ford mustangs. But i'm not a big ford person but but i'll take a mustang with some bourbon and bacon. Yeah you get behind the wheel of that thing. And i mean it's kinda hard to not like i'm really excited about the electric version that they just brought out that's pretty amazing and it looks phenomenal. So haven't had a chance to test drive What brought us together was the news of Jacksonville winds partnership and in essence. My understanding standings kendall jackson and chroma will be poured at all events including the kentucky derby that churchill downs.

"But that's nothing you know when we've more than made that up in increased reach online already and so shifting to the online focus is really what's made things work out for the partners. It's a long standing partners. I mean one that stands out as would for reserve. I mean emma bourbon drinkers so that one stands out for me. But give me some. If you don't mind. Like i love a couple of examples of how people how you're how your partners are shifting to these digital digital virtual activation. 's so i guess overall right last year digital was like i just said the one bright spot of twenty twenty and just to quantify that a little bit for the for those listeners who like the data are total impressions. Were down nineteen percent but our total engagements were up one hundred and forty eight percent. So that's substantial we also pivoted. We've always focused on kentucky derby party so we pivoted that to kentucky derby at home obviously party. Kovin don't blend well together and we've built a whole bunch of new content for fans to engage with and woodford was actually a part of that and we took we had. I call it real derby in fake derby last year because we did some stuff on the first saturday in may which is when everybody comes to expect the kentucky derby to happen which it didn't last year and then it actually happened in september And so we had really two bites at the apple of. What do we give people online. And what do we build their. And so we took the key learnings from both of those and are continuing to refine and amplify that but some of that. Is you know we've got an at home menu that we are engaging with our chef. We've got bourbon ambassadors. We've got you know people that we pull in from our partners like brown forman. Some of our new partners will be pulling in as well and just creating these really interactive and or live segments online. It seems like a to your earlier point. The digital was a bright spot. But i mean this probably makes your property more attractive more more. Inherently you can reach more people with this focus on you know a digital activation in greatly expand to reach for sure fresh air and that's always been a goal of woodford reserve. It has before were right. The the partnership with woodforde grew from being the official bourbon to being the presenting sponsor of the kentucky derby itself before cove. It was a thing and one of the goals of that partnership was to get a bottle of woodford reserve at every derby party. So it's always been the site component much more so than the on site component and they. They're building step by step instructions for.

"This could be troubling for both of them out. Knock this kind of a hard race four weeks out. It's the one good thing about the florida derby well. There's a lot of good things about the florida derby but moving it to five weeks out i thought was a tremendous move and i think it's it's great for the horsemen to have that opportunity to have that extra week. I think it's a it's a. It's a plus not a detriment that extra week. I mean you know there was always that theory. Nobody had won the kentucky. Derby five weeks. Layoff before bob wrote did and The reason was nobody ran five weeks out. Every prep was four weeks out. They moved the florida derby five weeks out. And i'm sure. Brad and chad would love to have had another week coming off of that race. That being said you know it's hard to assess every horses is different. And it's hard to assess how that kind of a race affects them individually. Highly motivated had trained. Okay is last work. I thought his last mile was very strong. I would like to see him out. He looked good on the gallup out on the watch was just okay But now these come out of the work. I wasn't crazy about him this morning. galloping this morning so we're going to keep an eye on him the next couple of days. He certainly wasn't his strong wasn't a smooth this morning as he had been going into that last work so something to keep an eye on anyway i think he he may right below us I was with. I was standing with dave and he made a not not a noise. That horses make certain he coughed a little caught her to. It's just hard to say. what are you know. Maybe somebody kicked up a little dust and got into. I don't wanna make any off at all. Not at all do that. His galaxy wasn't as as impressive this morning as it had been last week. So we'll keep an eye on him tamar well and on that topic Let's shift to the california horses and my first question is on on hot rod. Charlie and gary young was the first to notice. We were out there kind of watching and watching. And he was waiting for a hot rod charlie to leave the pony and this was the second morning here. And did he ever gallup no. I don't think so. I think he just just stayed with the pony. The whole way around and then here. That is a question because you know doug usually gets kind of aggressive with these sources coming in here for the three derby. Even after they've had all their their works out the out in california. I was kind of expecting to see him gallup today. And then you know gallup real strong tomorrow. Those two minute licks doug does maybe blow them out a little bit down the lane. I'm sure not going to see that tomorrow but I don't know i agree. It was a little bit surprising. And just something that makes you want to keep your eye on him for the next couple of days and that. That's why we hear. The works are over. But there's still plenty to assassin. I think highly motivated in hot rod. Charlie two horses to keep an eye on the mark medina spirit first day galloping. I thought was really strong yesterday. They They cut kick back on him a little bit. I think they didn't want him to do too much two days in a row like that. I didn't really get to see him this morning so i can't make a call on when he did this one. I'm guessing again though that they didn't want him to do as much as he did. A couple of days ago maybe maybe tomorrow he will again but You know the california horses rocky world. Also you know pe- gallup this morning I thought his last work that i saw on tape was very very good. He's a big key to this race. Another one would only three starts but he could be loose on the lead. The scratch of cato river obviously a plus for him Middle be interesting to see what post he draws and You know how their hands are Whether their hands are tied with an inside drawer if they can get something outside he showed he didn't. He's not a need the lead kind horse in those two first two races although I guess he didn't get much dirt in his face dot time. You certainly didn't get dirt his face into santa anita derby so I think In a perfect world. John sadler would prefer to be loose on the lead. Again in here So he's always. You have to consider. I think all three california horses have to be considered Even hot rod. Charlie's coming in off the louisiana derby. He looked good in his work the other day too. But like you said we're going to have to keep an eye on him after he did not gallic tonight. A horse that That is certainly a bit of a local story. And there's very frequently in derby this story line Oh basis for greg. Foley actually had terry finley yesterday and know they've got. They've got a third of him and we talked about him but he's the field good horse and he's feeling good out there. Yeah i mean there's work. The other day was five furlongs on on paper but it was really a seven furlong work. I mean that was not a gallup out. That was a seven furlong work. They asked him pretty good around the turn and down to the backstretch and he responded in any look. Good doing it Watching them in the morning. He's not the smoothest mood there in the morning. either. I don't think You certainly have to consider as one of those horses in that same price level. That could probably get a piece A everything worked out right for him to trip. Wise so Yeah like you say. He is a feel-good horsey is a horse. That seems to be you know coming out of his last race. Well also wanted to keep an eye on again. I don't know the horse that that well to assassin How he goes in the morning or but the one work i did see was was very good. Let's round out the derby. Obviously there's nothing to talk about. What brooklyn strong until he gets here later today. Twelve hour van ride actually might be here earlier. Okay i think they all have to be here by eleven. That's right And then there's a some of the keeneland horses like the king and hidden stash. We have yet to really see in the morning yeah. I don't know what to make of that. We will have reports. I had Mike vesey over keeneland so in the clock report. Good for saturday. We will have reports on their works and the one you didn't mention i think is another in that jury is King fury yeah good to be the king right.

"You'll see the details. And i talked to pete tomorrow actually so There's an opportunity for you to go out there for everybody to go out there and see it. So it's very very cool james. Pick that mike and We'll We'll we'll get started there. We go James scully good. Morning morning steve. I should also mention going out there. there's there's a couple of other things that that i ran into a new one that i'd been to zachary taylor to the ever. Been zachary taylor's grave. I have not been very cool. zachary taylor probably the least well almost the least known presently. The he was in office maybe a year or so And then he got sick he got sick off of some bad cherries and yeah swallowed a cherry pit or something and and ended up getting sick and died But he was also a great is also a great military hero but his grave is is out that way on brownsboro road. I've been out there once before and it's a it's a military cemetery. It's quite something. And i'll put pictures of that up to. I always go to cave hill. To and i'm in town. Which is the most incredible. I just see the drive out. Brownsboro rove you know mobile is awesome. And you're right. I mean there are. There are like some new subdivisions going up but none of them like that. I've seen just driving out there. Like right on the road. You know you have to drive down in there. There's a lot of A lot of new stuff happened in but a lot of the past you know seems like just the same as has been for decades and decades and decades. When you draw out that way it one thing that i that i saw and same thing right on brownsboro and i've seen i've seen science for this before and i never yesterday when i was driving back. I thought you know what i'm gonna be ender and maybe come up the river from that side. And i'd seen the signs for locust grove before you've been to locust grove i have not been Just know the race while the the reason that much like. I told this is much less horrifying than the jenny wiley. Okay you know the story. Oh my god not not not to sound too much. Like like like david on on jets creek but Oh my god look it up. You'll be horrified. It's the day on race for. I mean it's great. That i guess that they. It's great that they honor her. What happened to her when god. It's it's insane. it's it's nuts. I'll you and you'll be horrified. Locust grove is much nicer. Because it's the homestead of george clark of lewis and clark thing and this this is their their their family their family home and and when clark laid around ended up living out his life with his sister and brother-in-law at locust grove. It is just. It's just spectacular spectacular. Couldn't tore the house to yesterday because The mondays mondays and tuesdays are closed. But it's a national historic site. And it i. I mean i'd seen driven by it for years. I knew what it was. But i didn't ever go and so yesterday said you know what then i then. I ended up on the river. The louisville boat club. who knew I it's unbelievable water. What about the waterworks. Yeah i mean it's incredible down there just That below bo club is is wonderful. They have other Some other like you know a bow clubs. Docs down there and Just it's awesome and can't beat the views as far as those presidents graves. So you know my colleague vance hansen. I think he's he. He's that's part of his mission like i'm sure he's been the zachary taylor he's been to like over half of the presidential graves like throughout the us and he's like made trips just to see him. So i definitely He'd be a good person to talk to you about that. History vance hansen. As as as we as we've laid out many times with his nickname the quietest asan still waters run deep. He's the most interesting the most guy that that you never hear from Because he's just so focused and reserved and we'll get we gotta get vance's. Yeah push this week. I'm going to do that. I'm glad I'm glad you mentioned that's cool. I got a now. I i got a million things i can discuss. Forget it i mean. We'll say we can't do it there because it'll be too much all right Let's shift gears and get a few thoughts. We'll talk a little bit about the thursday or tuesday and wednesday cards in a minute but first of all some some instant read off of yesterday's Oat straw not that you know. Positional is all that important but You know what your you know. What's your early read fridays feature. Well thought that the draw tell well for travel. Call it you know. I look at her travel column and search results. both those phillies have good tactical foot Might not be on the the lead. It looks like perhaps abbas grace wilson from the gay but if she didn't go travel call more search results could be potentially setting the pace the way. There's just no real clear cut speed in there and being post six travel call and post twelve researchers alz. I thought that post helped both of them. I think it's top heavy oaks. Because you know i look malathion and Clear and beautiful end crazy. Beautiful all three of those phillies are contenders. In my i especially malathion clear air and none none of the three or pace dependent. They've all won graded stakes behind like real slow paces They might not get an ideal setup. But i think they're going to be able to sit close enough and i just think you know like the derby you get past the central quality and it gets to be a little bit of I wouldn't say it's top heavy after essential quality but the oaks a little bit different Where the top five in. There are extremely formidable. i. I won't argue and And i frankly have have somewhat Discounted the arkansas. Yeah the secret police. Parole and avis grace. Yeah and and a little bit even clairiere and and travel column at just because search results and moffat just. They just seem to me to be that much. That much more imposing what has what has transpired is a couple of phillies. That have looked really good in the morning and anxious to hear from mike.

In just the way he did it he did it well moderate pace and you know he like when he tipped out the way he finished and look good and and it didn't appear to me that hobby Went all in on either. You know he kinda wrote him with a lot of confidence but yeah he got a pretty good. The other day. I realize it switched out acacia for maggie on the set and i was reporting and sometimes it's hard to hear the throw you have your eye afi. The volume was a little low. And i you know. Went on saying what i was gonna say and said you know thanks. Acacia kept saying occasion. It was maggie. Oh and this love that he could. He could help somehow to jump all over that so then they were calling me. Gary like i was gary But then yesterday. When i took over meeting greg war for in the second shift on the set and they did a really good thing. They kind of enclosed. Who set more. You're still outdoors but they put a plexiglass to block a lot of the wind and anybody who's been in the grandstand at belmont early in the media. It can be pretty darn cold up there and they put some space heaters underneath. Will i go to sit down on the chair. He's got an electric blanket. Come on give them a little bit. "A second defy in the race at belmont. Gums can't remember his name. But you know. But i don't don't. We tend to do that. Like we put labels trainers and jockeys dino just really kind of depends on the kind of as you get the train and or right that kind of seventeen on the green. Yes look with terrific on the turf but he also very good. I'm disturbed as well but you know who's catchy and started winning on turf races at seven on the green you know how for how long is christoph camman been labeled and you only had belmont winner and tone was and you know it just depends the kind of horses that you have access to. It's true and i had this conversation last week with With phil d'amato and he's now won. I think his last nine. More than graded stakes. But i in particular graded stakes. Because that's what i looked up. All turf stake winners. And you know. Obviously some are multiple That that Germain's nia but These got likes. I think he's i think i think it was nine nine. Or maybe even ten of his last ten stake winds great at stake. Winds are all with turf forces and and he made an interesting point. Actually he said well a lot of the owners that are involved in these sources. They don't have the same budget to spend. You know i just got off the phone with terry finley. You know pioneered those those two seven figure purchases those yearling purchases from saratoga nineteen million a million and a half You know that our dirt horses and and you know my my good owners can't spend for you know for those type of horses and so they're getting you know they're getting what they can for for what they can afford and they've been there for so and it's funny the money that is offered in those graded stakes on grass it. It's very much the same and similar to the money offered on on those graded stakes on dirt crazy to it. 'cause 'cause how popular interpretation he's got and actually boy rounding with face. He got a great idea to try to run a turf sale..
Kurt Becker's Stroll Through Racing History: Grindstone
"Only made six career starts but one of them resulted in a victory in the kentucky derby and burst onto the racing. Cd twenty five years ago this month with a win in the louisiana derby. His name was grindstone. A foal from the first crop of nineteen ninety kentucky derby winner dreidel rhinestones was owned and bred by lexington kentucky. Native william tian in the name of his overbrook farm center d wayne lukas grindstone raced twice as juvenile before undergoing surgery for a bone chip in a knee. But after a seven month layoff. He returned to the races with a runner-up relation allowance company at santa anita in february of nineteen ninety-six to start his three-year-old campaign. Despite having made just three career starts grindstone went to new orleans on march seventeen for the great three louisiana derby at a mile and a sixteen despite having nothing more than a maiden special weight victory to his name. Rhinestone was dispatched the two to one second choice behind local favorites arbs magic and it was arbs. Maverick stood and rhinestones way in the final furlong. Tony bentley had. The call takes me puts up. Magic hangs on the inside but it will be grindstone with the lead and sar magic. Grindstone when bill. Louisiana derby by war with terry daily with these victory that day grindstone was now part of discussions for the upcoming kentucky derby but he was lightly raced and no winner of the louisiana derby had won the kentucky. Derby splash gold. In nineteen twenty four grindstone stone would have one more prep race before heading to churchill downs. It would be the arkansas derby on april thirteen. GOING TO GO Six and a half furlongs as for the three year old's warning line favors one francs. Rock Cat Hall of Famer Bill Will Give Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez a leg up and this phillies done very little wrong on her career. She's three for seven. With four second-place finishes ran second in a couple of graded stakes, including the grade one spin away up at Saratoga last year last seen winning a third level allowance optional claimer. She uses stakes. Winner took the any limit kick off three year old season three starts back. and. Probably the only reason that this race isn't later in the card is that it's a five Horsfield and Franks? Rakhat is three to five on the morning line, and she may be the the loan speed in race, so she's going to be tough to beat at three to five, but that's a pretty short price, considering there some pretty good up and coming phillies near now I think number four center. I'll I'm going to give her another shot for. For Chad Brown and Joel Rosario Sheila Great Getting Her Maiden Win Gulfstream Park, when bet down to three to five at the end of March then came back in a tough allowance race at Churchill downs where she was really over bet, she was three to five that day against another very impressive maiden winner of this one for Steve Asmussen in casual casual ran a great race that day center I'll had all sorts of problems. She didn't break that well. She had trouble during the race, and she was just really never in at any point. I think it's a racy can kind of draw a line through? If she runs closer to the way she did and her debut. I think she's the one that could give Franks rock cat. The biggest problem Franks rocket will probably get the lead I would think Rosario would have center I'll sitting justin behind her and seeing if they can outgun into the line going six and a half furlongs. With you I'm going to take a shot with center. Rile planner. If? When I plan! Early took five tomorrow I will use both Franks rocket and center, but I'll tell you what I think. You can make a case also for up in smoke was undefeated and sprints. She's four five and a career. Lone blemish came when George Weaver tries to stretch her out Hollywood wildcat. Go at Gulfstream Park. She's raced exclusively of Gulfstream, in fact, steady diet once. Once a month February march April may June now. She gets a race in July. Here over Big Sandy, she wanted the game face overboard last time out for weaver Rod Ortiz Junior. Who wrote her in her debut against fellow Florida breads down at Gulfstream Park's in the climb back aboard for the first time. Since that day looks, you'll need a little help up front if Franks, rockets able to set an easy pace I. She's going to be very very tough. I think Senator I'll be the first one to come calling. Those are the two up in smoke. If you're looking to three deep, I don't think you need to center for Bobby and I race number three goes as the great three six and a half for a long victory ride go to the end of the card. Eleven race card like I said earlier, and the final four races make up an all stakes pick four, and it starts in reasoning with the greed three poker. Flat Mile on the turf for many years. This was the fourth of July staple. On the naira calendar here it is now as part of a super five stakes card. In, the poker though. On the widener, so they come out of that shoot. On the clubhouse turn we get a field of eight entered for the turf as a main track. Only it's all relevant with the way. The weather's been here. I would imagine you know there's supposed to be some rain. We're recording the show Friday afternoon supposed to be some rains rather day on Friday and into the evening. I can't imagine it enough to take this off the turf, so let's say it will be a field of eight.
