"Reading is from Mark. Chapter nine verse 30. They went on from there and passed through Galilee and Jesus didn't want anyone to know for he was teaching his disciples saying to them. The son of man is going to be delivered into the hands of men and they will kill him. And when he is killed after three days, he will rise. But they didn't understand the same and were afraid to ask him. And they came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house, he asked them. What were you discussing on the way, But they kept silent for on the way, the head argued with one another about who was the greatest And he sat down and called the 12 and said to them if anyone would be first he must be the last of all, and servant of all. And he took a child and put him in the midst of them and taking him in his arms, he said To them, Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me and Whoever receives me receives, not me, but him. Who sent me? We do a lot of following in our lives. For instance, we follow people on Instagram and Twitter. We follow our gut instincts. Sometimes we talk of following the news. We follow recipes when we cook. We follow all kinds of things, don't we? Millions of people have discovered that the most important following a person can do is to follow Jesus Christ. He knows what makes our lives work best. After all, he calls himself the way the truth and the life So how does one follow Jesus in 2021? Well, first we place our trust in him dealt with and what he's done for us. But we also then follow him. In God's word. The Bible and their Jesus teaches us the way citizens of his kingdom are to live. And then we obediently put his word to work in our lives. That's real. Following Well, today we have another passage on how to operate as a devoted follower of Christ. In last week's reading. Jesus announced his upcoming suffering and death and resurrection to his disciples, and they didn't understand him and he set them straight. Now we see him doing that same thing again today. He actually will announce his passion three times, and each time the disciples failed to comprehend what he's talking about, and then he'd sit them down and teach them about What is involved in following him. Well, in today's passage begins by telling them he's going to be delivered into the hands of men and they'll kill him. Who's going to deliver him? God. Now why? To achieve the atonement for sin that had been in the planning since the fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis three and the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham that his descendants would be a blessing to the nations of the world. The disciples didn't understand Jesus, and they were afraid to ask him about this. Maybe they were afraid because of the rebuke that Peter had received earlier on from Jesus. Or perhaps they were afraid because they're in denial that didn't want to know more or even think about this kind of things. It appears that they were having their own discussion along the way. After this prediction is they tagged along behind Jesus. I wonder what that looked like Jesus out in front quite a ways and they're talking. Was it a heated discussion or just a group of guys watching along seriously or just shooting the breeze laughing at each other now and then we'll When they got to Capernaum and entered the house where they were to stay, Jesus asked them. What are you talking about? On the way here. This question was met with an embarrassed silence because you see they were arguing with one another about who was the greatest among them. Can you believe it? After hearing his dire passion prediction they are still carrying on with their own plans and agenda, establishing a pecking order amongst themselves, going back and forth about who would have the highest status among them and authority. Of course, Jesus knew all along what they were discussing. He didn't make them. Tell him But he did sit down and addressed it in his teaching. I pictured Jesus sighing to himself as he sat down, which signaled it's time for a teaching moment. And if motion them to come and listen, and he said to them, if anyone would be first, you must be last of all, and servant of all. He turned their thinking and the world's thinking on its head in regards to what's important when it comes to greatness and status and power. In fact, Jesus is speaking to their ambitions and sublimating those ambitions for himself, recreated them in place of the ambition to rule as they were after. He substituted the ambition to serve In place of the ambition to have things done for them. He substituted the ambition to do things for others chase after that, he says, if you want to be first be last of all, and servant of all humble yourself. Instead of Me first. It's a you first attitude. Is what counts in my eyes used to says. Instead of longing to be master of all, it's a longing to be a servant of all asking the question. What can I do to help those around me to be all that God? Intended them to be. He was teaching them to think. The things of God. But you're so different from our own human. Thank you. To drive this point home with them. He used to live illustration. There must have been a child wandering through the room when he was speaking because Jesus called the boy over and put him in the midst of the group and lovingly put his arms around. The boy kind of a sign of nurture and he says to them, whoever receives one such child in my name in my name meaning out of obedience to me. Receives me. And whoever receives me receives not only me but him. Meaning God who sent me? Why did he grab that child? Because Children lacked status in that society. They were needy there to be seen and not heard. They were not influencers who couldn't pay one back if you did anything for them. To serve them as non transactional. You get nothing back. It goes unnoticed. There's no applause, and Jesus seems to be saying here. Uh, greatness is about taking on lowly unnoticed tasks and caring for those who have little to no status. In the world. And to do that is to be in fellowship with Jesus. When you think about it. Following Jesus like this? Is basically walking in his footsteps. I mean, he is our servant King who humbled himself to serve a sinful humanity that was totally incapable and helpless when it came to saving ourselves from sin and death and the power of the devil. And having a right relationship with God. And yet he served us anyway. Took on the form of a servant to became one of us and went to the cross. Following Jesus. Then means taking on new ambitions. To be humble servants to off Christian author Chuck Swindoll writes in his book, Improving Your Serve These words. Lots of philosophies are floating around, and most of them are more confusing than they are helpful. Most of them end up focusing full attention on the individual. Just consider a few of them, Greece said. Be wise know yourself, Rome said. Be strong discipline yourself. Religion says Be good, conform yourself. Epicurean ism says the sensuous Enjoy yourself. Education says Be resourceful, Expand yourself, Psychology says Because confident assert yourself. Materialism says Be satisfied. Please yourself, Pride says, Be superior. Promote yourself. Humanism says. Be capable. Believe in yourself yourself yourself yourself. All of these are about doing something with and to yourself and for yourself. But Jesus says Be a servant. Humbly give to others..

"Let it be good enough for us. Hey, man. Well, Good morning, Pastor Day. Can't you know I like that message, And I thought about it so much, And you have a way of just, you know, using Scripture the way you do. It makes me feel so much better because I have to admit it. I'm aging too. Yeah, that's kind of said yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. Like what you said in Psalm someone or three When he talks about Lord lifting us from the pit. I had never even well, I can't say I've never, but I just never looked at that, like he's lifting us out of of hell and death and he's lifting us up. And and we're being in a way. We're glorified. We're going to heaven. We're going. You know the promise that he that he extends to us. Why wouldn't I be happy? Yep. And why would I be aging? My mom always said, you know, keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart. I don't know if that's original or not love it, But you lived over 93 just as happy as she can be. Yeah, And just as she said, my joy is knowing that I get to be with Jesus some man. You know, Kent, your mom in I I only met her a time or two, but your mom Really epitomized what we're talking about. Today. She aged with grace with dignity. She had a young hard even though she was aging And in a lot of that, and you kind of in in indicated it as well. A lot of it is rooted in the attitude, you know, Um we've said it before we can say it again. Life is I think this was coined by Chuck Swindoll. Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% the way we respond to what happens to us, right? And you know you make lemons out of lemonade. You kind of thing or lemonade. Eleven's that works better indeed. Oh, man. Well,.

"Best stars during that time, and you don't even recognizing So, uh, I kind of go like I was crazy guy. And I said this Well, what you doing At that time he's playing for the Utah Jazz. I said, What were you doing? Finance? It's that, he says. I see. I fly and see coach hugs. He says almost new He says. Have you ever played for him? You always come back to see He said. He's like my dad. If you know how Huggins coach and I won't say what kind of work was he? I mean, you think How do they love the guy because he had a relationship with them. I'm saying today that we ought to have a relationship with God. That when God says no, we understand he loves me. And then he cares for me. He knows what's best for me and he wants what's best for me. So, David said. I know the nature of God, another relationship that I have with him. If you're struggling with will have gone your life you need to examine what is your relationship with him? Because normally when we are struggling with the will of God in our life It's because our relationship Has backed off. So David's responses first of all how he sees God this morning. You will always be able to give thanks to God. When you view him properly for how great he is. And how close he is to you so way. See this and his that he's aware of God's nature. Is it wherever he is aware of his relationship? Then he's thankful for God's grace. Does. God has promised him more than even things he didn't even ask for. We'll just stop and think about all the things that God has given us. Just thinking about that I was thinking about God has given us life. You know the world doesn't value life, And sometimes we don't either, All mean well, stand up and say we're against abortion, but we don't value the life that God has given us. And you'll know that you don't value the way life that God has given you when you waste your time. The Bible tells us God's given us life and that we ought to redeem the time because the days are Evil. And we're not valuing life when we waste our life. Not only should we remember that God's Grace is given us life, but God's Grace has given us talents. Abilities to serve him. We ought to be thankful. I was thankful this morning when Emily was up here. She's on home from school for a little bit, Brother Keith yet her up here using her talents, that's a good thing. Because God gives us talents. Some of her talents are visible. Some of them are not visible. But God will reveal to you what your talent is, and God will show you where you can use it for his glory. God has given us life. He's giving us talents God has given us wisdom. I'm not talking about degrees like PhDs. I'm talking about knowing that what you need to do and when you need to do it Chuck Swindoll said this and I read this in one of his books. I copied it out. It was on wisdom. Checks, Window said, and I quote I'll never forget a lunch ahead with the Chris Christian businessmen. As we discussed many of the responsibilities connected with his vocation, the subject of wisdom kept sliding into our conversation. He and I were agreeing on the value of certain qualities that cannot be learned in school like intuition, diligence, integrity, perception, consistency, loyalty. And he again mentioned wisdom. Wisdom is hard to define, because it means so much more than knowledge. It goes much deeper than awareness. At that point in our conversation, I stress how convinced the man was of wisdoms importance and what a significant role it played in his life and the way the influenced his business decisions. So I asked the question. How does a person get wisdom? I realized we are to be men and wisdom, men and women of wisdom, but few people ever talk about how it's acquired. His answer was quick. Into the point. In one word, he said. Pain I paused and looked deeply into his eyes without knowing the specifics. I knew his one word answer was not theoretical. He had walked the path. He and pain had gotten to know each other quite.

"A little forty hearing from you so let's get back to work call now with Scott well my friend when I hear your background growing up PK we just record and then I I hear that you have a heart for helping people I'm going to mention something that may sound a little unusual but at one time our ministry hope with our process to give counsel to of the Southern Baptist Convention to pastors and then their wives and yes and that's because the head of of the the president for free for selected to be president of the pastors conference of ugh just what their material and he said would you provide individual council and so that they could sign up before the convention ever started and that it could go either pastors conference which fed right into the convention itself and I mean we were you know I like I pulled the people not just from hope for the heart people I knew that were professional counselors and they have so we really spent quality time and some were struggling you know in all kinds of areas sometimes it was up it miracle attempt whatever it but the issue was the band the pastor from I respect tremendously he said to me in front of all of us for first to may and then before all of us and this is in Indianapolis are members of the so well he said I want you to know pastors are some of the most unhealthy people and the reasons why until yeah and he a new some of these things but yeah they typically don't have someone to talk to because is there not to share pain and difficulties with members of the flock they need to have people outside of the church the because things can be taken wrong admit that all kinds of things they they can feel very lonely and I just thought you know it and I'm not I'm not equating that at all with mental illness I'm saying this situationally I and I've been very very aware of the very difficult a position of pastors wives if one of their children blows it up makes a mistake and if they're not in any demonstrative way you know it's like they'll get blamed and firewood unit five with the pastor's family the parents let this go and and and it's almost it's it's very very harsh of those who are pastors wives have described to me such pain end of and there is an appropriate ministry that at it let me ask have you ever thought of having any type of ministry said she grew up as a PK and I'm sure you are the perfect child at home knowing that a lot but by far just I mean just that well the book your available the case though yeah yeah one in a million but so so so the point is there is a tremendous need now it's not easy okay our pastor to get to go for counselling are to seek but sometimes if it's not phrases counseling if it if it could be called coaching if it could be because of you know a type of discipleship but coaching is has a whole different flavor of and yet you can deal with I I know they're supposed to be different seven other there's a difference counseling is supposed to deal with the past and get you healthy and hold to the present coaching takes the person where they are like a coach in football basketball but you take the kid who walks in our or the athlete who walks in and you want them to perform to the best of their ability so regardless of how you look at it if you're a coach you still have to correct of if it's the if it's holding the back in the wrong position if it's lowering it on the hand on the handle if it's raising it and if it's putting the foot farther out yeah all kinds of things where there could be patterns that a coach would need to do to correct of the things that will make a difference for the future now that that the the athletic references that I'm making that's lightweight but it's only meant as a comparison but I just was wondering have you even thought about of the that is a possibility since you have self diagnose yourself is the PK the preacher's kid seen all the whole thing I mean you've you've you've observed a great deal how old are you now but anyway I am I will be forty four at the end of this month serrated or just just just right yeah I am actually on on a path avoided for many years but I'm actually on a path we currently attending Bible college here in Texas and then pursuing after that I'm getting a grand but we'll counseling and then after that pursuing a master's in counseling to be an LPC because my heart is with California what what tends to be the they overlooked or the or the avoided in order to be mental illness or be with ministers because what I have noticed is it's it's a very rough job and you know from personal experience of my father having been a because it's a very rough job because we as a church and for many many years and and you know decades and centuries have put ministers pastors up on a pedestal but as soon as we see a flaw or crack in the armor then they're not the you know the high level perfect priest that we thought they were and then of course you know one thing leads to another they come crashing down with with nobody there to help pick them up you know it whether it's benign but abandoned by their congregation or you know run off into the sunset how to hide but you know there's two in the heart yep yeah it's it's it's really tough when there has been the type of failure whether it's sick immoral failure or but there are two entities that would be good for you to know about if you don't and find out what they do it's sun scape and marble retreat of the vote in in Colorado and the server treat facilities intended for pastors and then go to pull their lives back together again and sometimes it isn't a moral failure it's a person can burn out a pastor can literally from the ground and in fact I believe that Chuck Swindoll Ella is a young pastor ended up going to I believe it was sun scape and you know and he he is one of the most noted of Bible scholars certainly one of the most articulate pastors and who has the program insight for living and so my point is it's wonderful to see that he would endorse and ministry like that because there is such a need and yet very few pastors feel safe there they are yeah deathly deathly afraid of but if I am candid and I'm not if I'm found out and I'm I'm not saying that they're just horrible whatever but there's there's a big fear factor and I'm not saying they all have it I'm just saying the people there I've talked with pastors and pastors wives certainly up over the years and and they acknowledge with and they appreciate if you'd know that this is factual if if you even can empathize and they they deeply appreciate that that we would take care of you here's an ago it was the year is two thousand Billy Graham but on a conference up in Amsterdam and that was the reason I remember it was two thousand this book was because it was called after them two thousand two thousand and got so easy to remember in Amsterdam in Holland the end he up specifically I was asked to come and speak on counseling as the doorway to evangelism now only ten percent could be from America the United States is make the United States of America the other ninety percent had to come from other places throughout the world because he did not want it what he did he wanted to equip those in ministry specifically are who would be throughout the world and I remember Quinn I taught of the other there were however many people are not but at the end this isn't you know people come up afterwards and they have their individual questions the one question I remember the most was from a pastor from Africa and he said I am I M. full time on it like the pedal going down yup totally press down he said I I love the ministry and and not then I'm called the council and he was he was telling me his schedule and then he was asking he said but what do I do about my family and he said I want to be faithful to god for the ministry I said your family is your ministry yeah your family is your ministry a part of your ministry so I said you need to actually schedule time because he would tell me here all this counseling all this work to do and he couldn't give time to his family I said no you and your wife talk about what we do express love to her and wait you literally schedule it as though it's a counseling appointment but it is time to nurture your wife your children and literally have those pockets of time throughout the week and it please leave he smiled it's like oh because he was going to feel guilty but he was neglecting the work of god not understanding that being with his family is also the yeah you it's me your heart listen to me we've gotta talk high blood pressure is Sirius and yours whoa what happened to what we used to be so much more active but lately you've been ignoring me I know you think I'm just gonna keep taking away forever you're wrong you can do so much more to control your high blood pressure doing the minimum isn't doing enough I wonder a lot of pressure and can quit whenever I want but you do know that but I like my job just treat me better check on.

"God who determines the gift and the ministry determines the power and the effectiveness of that gift and ministry and that's something for you to realize you see ladies and gentlemen it's god who determines who you are he's the one who allowed you to be born he gave you your personality he's the one who enables you to have talents and gifts and ministries and the same god is the one who allows you to understand the dimensions of the power of it but this is important because the same god to give a man like Chuck Swindoll or Billy Graham their gifts and their ministries and their power is the same god that's involved with you that's the same god who gave you your gifts your ministries in your power you're just as needed as they are you're just the significance of the program of god as they are god is working on his sovereign plan and he's using every believer to accomplish that plan every gift every ministry every level of power is important and necessary for accomplishing the will of god now you'll notice in verses four five and six that the words gifs ministries and effects are all plural nouns which means there are many ways to minister for god but always are orchestrated by the same god your spiritual gift your service ministry your ability to affect others is the divine grant from god the spirit god the son and god the father there are a variety of ways that you can minister for the lord but you have one guy that's behind all of the ways of true ministry and the present ministry that you and I have is that in trust with from god and that's the way god expects us to view it the problem.

"From her enemies obviously the claim of some of the people in Corinth was gonna guided them and got it protected them and that's automatic proof that there right with god but as we'll see in just a few moments the fact that god wants guided and protected Israel didn't necessarily mean that they were right with god the fact that god wants guided and protected you doesn't necessarily prove anything you could have been guided and protected by god and still end up losing record just like many of his real then many people in rebellion love to say well the lord let me in fact I had a person who actually doing something contrary to the word of god said the lord was leading him well just because the lord let you at one time in your life doesn't mean you're going to end up a winner he saw remotely demands that we discipline ourselves in the things of god and that we go to the finish line in order to become a winner the second benefit is all Israel were supernaturally delivered and protected through the sea he says in verse one of chapter ten and all passed through the city all of the nation Israel came out of Egypt and passed through the Red Sea but not all Israel have hearts right with god really some of the Corinthians were boasting about all the things that they had seen god deliver them from perhaps they had been delivered from some sin perhaps they've been delivered from some physical infirmity perhaps they have been delivered from some enemy in any case these Corinthians refusing were using this as an argument that they were right with god I knew a man one time who had a serious drinking problem and god remarkably delivered him from is serious drinking problem but that does not mean the rest of his life was right with god in fact is he was doing other things and saying things that I felt would cost them rewards just because he gets a well god took that away from me doesn't automatically mean he's going to finish a winner we need to discipline ourselves to the ways of the lord we could lose just like many of his real the third benefit that the nation is real experiences all were identified with the great spiritual leader we read in first Corinthians ten two and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea all of the Israelites had been under the miraculous ministry of Moses he was an important and impacting man of god he was one of god's best service and all of Israel and then identified with that powerful man because they followed him Moses had a very special relationship with the lord and all of his real benefit because of that at least some of the Corinthians were using as a basis for their relationship with god the fact that they've been identified with some of the great New Testament ministers some were claiming that they had been linked to Paul summer claiming they had been linked to a policy somewhere claiming they have been linked to see for us that was their claim to fame now it's true then a minister will give an account of the cheap according to Hebrews chapter thirteen verse seventeen but it's also true that when a sheep stands before god will stand alone to give his own account many love to drop names of their former pastor or somebody they heard speak one time and that becomes their claim to spirituality many years ago when I was teaching in grand rapids we had a student who was from a church in California that had been pastored by doctor Chuck Swindoll Dr Chuck Swindoll is a wonderful Bible teacher and a tremendous man of god but that was this students claim to fame is claim to fame was I've been under swindles ministry the fact is we had to take his own exams he could flunk all by himself the truth is he was using his connection to doctor swindle as his claim to fame when in all reality he was a loser of a student you're a believer and you listen to some of the outstanding Bible teachers in the word of god branch you own a library of some of the great videos or CD's of some of the great messages perhaps you've been a great church you've been under a great pastor you have a library of impressive books and tapes you can still die and lose all your reward you see your connection to a great name doesn't mean that much because it doesn't automatically mean.

"Right with god really some of the Corinthians were boasting about all the things that they had seen god deliver them from perhaps they had been delivered from some C. N. perhaps they been delivered from some physical infirmity perhaps they have been delivered from some enemy in any case these Corinthians refusing were using this as an argument that they were right with god I knew a man one time who had a serious drinking problem and god remarkably delivered him from is serious drinking problem but that does not mean the rest of his life was right with god in fact is he was doing other things and saying things that I felt would cost them rewards just because he gets a well god took that away from me doesn't automatically mean he's going to finish a winner we need to discipline ourselves to the ways of the lord or we could lose just like many of his real the third benefit that the nation is real experiences all were identified with the great spiritual leader we read in first Corinthians ten two and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea all of the Israelites had been under the miraculous ministry of Moses he was an important and impacting man of god he was one of god's best service and all of Israel and then identify with that powerful man because they followed him Moses had a very special relationship with the lord and all of his real benefit because of that at least some of the Corinthians were using as a basis for their relationship with god the fact that they've been identified with some of the great New Testament ministers some were claiming that they had been linked to Paul summer claiming they had been linked to a policy somewhere claiming they had been leaked the sleepers that was their claim to fame now it's true then a minister will give an account of the cheap according to Hebrews chapter thirteen verse seventeen but it's also true that when a sheep stands before god will stand alone to give his own account many love to drop names of their former pastor or somebody they heard speak one time and that becomes their claim to spirituality many years ago when I was teaching in grand rapids we had a student who was from a church in California that had been pastor by doctor Chuck Swindoll Dr Chuck Swindoll is a wonderful Bible teacher and a tremendous man of god but that was this students claim to fame his claim to fame was I've been under swindles ministry the fact is he had to take his own exams he could flunk all by himself the truth is he was using his connection the doctor swindle as his claim to fame when in all reality he was a loser of a student you're a believer and you listen to some of the outstanding Bible teachers in the word of god if you own a library of some of the great videos or CD's of some of the great messages perhaps you've been a great church you been under a great pastor you have a library of impressive books and tapes you can still die and lose all your reward you see your connection to a great name doesn't mean that much because it doesn't automatically.
