"Not only from my show but the other shows in our twenty four hour network as well but in my particular case sports byline USA which is kind of the crown jewel of our network. I have over twenty thousand interviews and so we've been able to capture the history of sports over the last sixty five years but one of the of the things I'm most proud of is the fact that when we have lost a player a coach a commissioner a manager and owner. We've been able to share with you our interviews with them and we're GonNa do that this hour because in two thousand eighteen rusty staub passed away and also that was in vase ball of course and also we lost another one that was chuck Knox in the NFL. Stop who played. Twenty three seasons with four major league teams as an outfielder and first baseman passed away this year. As I said known for his power and his patients at the plate he became an all star for three different clubs and a fan favourite and he played a memorable role in the early franchise histories of the Astros and the expos. And he starred for the mets in the one thousand nine hundred seventy three world series. He made his big league debut with the Houston Colt. Forty five's only eight days after his nineteenth birthday nineteen sixty three and he played for the Colt. Forty five's the Astros The Expos two times the mets two times in the Tigers as well as the Rangers six time all star so we will share with you our interview with the late rusty. Stop and right after that. We're going to share with you our interview with the late Chuck Knox who also passed away in two thousand eighteen. He was the coach who took the Los Angeles Rams three straight NFC titles and also led the seahawks and the buffalo bills and he established a winning culture and a legacy that will never be forgotten being the only coach to lead the rams to five consecutive double digit win seasons called Ground Chuck for his run. I offenses Knox was the. Nfl coach of the year.

"What he's been able to do with those guys under him. I'll Brett farve and Aaron Rodgers. So when you looking at a Sam darnold, you're young guy who you can pour into you don't want a young coach and a young guy. I like Mike McCarthy because he can he can pull from his experiences with Aaron Rodgers in Brett farve, and he can pull from even Young Sam darnold and allow him to become who he wants Kevin Clarke from the ringer came on earlier. He had a great line. He said what you don't want. Is it developing quarterback getting a developing coach you want a state you like Andy Reid to Kansas City, then he can get Patrick Mahomes developed. We know who like that. I like that saving a lot you bring in Matt rule. You gotta developing quarterback in a developing NFL head coach, I'm not interested in that. No, no McCarthy. I love McCarthy. I absolutely love McCarthy. I. I think my only knock on Mike McCarthy was his complacency when it comes to play calling bad at it. Or didn't care. He wasn't bad. He wasn't a bad play caller. I just when he got up on teams. He was very conservative very conservative any. He just didn't have that that could be generational. Chuck Knox Marty you know, it is a little bit. That's the way they're ourselves. You have to pair yourself when you know in self-assessment in this league is very important. If you know that that's who you are. You gotta bring in somebody on that staff that counters that that's going to challenge the play calling in the creativity and innovation that you put put out there..

"We have the tickets buying Billick joins us now. Brian, welcome. How are you? Mike. How are you? Couple of things I want to start with Justin Tucker, someone you're very familiar with. Because I thought after his brilliant performance his whole career asking the go to the podium after missing a game winning or game tying PAT Toomey was the class act of the week. So I thought here's a guy who gets it. And I don't know if a guy a lot of attention, but I noticed it and he asked to go talk at the podium after he missed his first kicking three hundred inside what would have been PAT territory. I was impressed by that. And he has a class act. And and obviously he has been so consistent. He he was the most shocked man in the world when he missed that. You just knew was automatic. In fact, I of course, I lived here in the mid Atlantic. And the big joke around here now is what what are better odds the mega ball one point six or Justin Tucker, missing another extra point. I'm not sure which has bigger odd. This guy's been spectacular. Yeah. Counting field goals of that range. He was over three hundred for three hundred in his career before that kick. In fact, as I was watching the game size up and and and with the assumption. He would make that going in the overtime I thought. Well, okay. This is this is now in the ravens daily what this comes down to an overtime who makes the field goal. Then you know, just is going to be the one to do it. Yeah. That was a that was a big game. That was a very beginning to good teams. Now, they're both okay shape. But that would have been a big win for the ravens. What do you think of the ravens right now? I think they're solid obviously it's going to be a dog fight to the end with with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati the next couple of weeks to go on the road now to Carolina. So that's gonna be an interesting place to play and then Carolina place, Pittsburgh, and then they play each other. I'm talking on Baltimore. And pittsburgh. So that's three weeks going to be very telling for the raven for the saints. Boy, this was huge daily go on the road and beat the ravens beat that defense. And now if they can go on the road Minnesota in Minnesota with that defense, I think they're clearly planting the flag that says, hey Rams. We're ready for you. Whereas good as anybody in the NFC the first week which was so puzzling where they get hit with a forty eight by Tampa. They've been able to put that away and overcome that they've won some tight games since then. And we know how tough they are in their building. I wonder about their defense. But here's the thing with Minnesota. Minnesota needs to beat them. If they wanna prove they belong if they want to show that they can, you know, and I still think they have a chance, especially if they're healthy don't know if they're ever getting Griffin back. But if they win that game this week, they're in pretty good shape. This a big game for Minnesota at home against the wall. And because it's at home, they got a hold serve at home. If they think they're going to challenge, of course division. I think it's going to be back and forth or Green Bay Chicago's right there. So all three of those teams that's going to be back and forth. But you know, we talked about it many times. Mike is you got to win at home split on the road beat the teams you're supposed to be and a split with the good teams. Well, this is. Home game against a good team that if you don't win it that means you gotta go get one on the road that maybe a little tougher to do right now. Would you put more would you put more faith in New England and more faith in Kansas City looking forward. Well, yeah, you're gonna you're always a tough that betting against knowing and Tom Brady and dollar check. But boy Kansas City looks pretty darn good. Their defense is still suspect. I'm going to be very interesting to see how they play the Rams in Mexico City. And then how they play the ravens the team. We just talked about to see how that offense matches up against those defense. That's gonna be that's going to be very telling to me is just how far Kansas City. Of course. It's you know, regular season. Nobody cares. It's what are you doing the playoffs? He's been the bugaboo for that. Especially for bear. That's not fair and they've been brilliant during the regular season. I think we'll get a good indicator of just how good they really are. When we see that ram game in that game. Yeah. That's Lissa handy. Has he's become the Chuck Chuck Knox Marty Schottenheimer, Andy Reid. Those are the generational guys who've had great success regular season, but had tough times throughout the postseason life. And Andy just he needs to have that one big run in the playoffs. Yeah. Great coach. And and but until you get it then that's specter of. Yeah. Back always just kinda hangs up. Yeah. Like, it was for cowered until he got it really, you know, for years and years, and he lost a lot of tough games until he finally got one. Once you get one. They they leave you alone. That's basically how it worked. And then look at the whole record and say wow, records, pretty good. That's that's how it works. You remove the qualifiers that's one. You know, the charges are look good. I they've only lost to the Rams and the chiefs they're five and two you never trust that franchise, but they've played without both all year. You know, they've played solidly. They have talent. I mean, they're they're a dangerous team this year. You know? And it's exciting. I'm from LA. So it's easy for me to talk about it LA as the greatest stand in football, whether winning or losing they bail on you. You're gone, you're nothing, but if you're winning, and obviously the Rams the chargers, and even more impressive. The fact that the chargers. Philip rivers has been magnificent the plane and what amounts to high school stadium. I mean in the fight through all that. Yeah. You're exactly right. And unfortunately, their division where it's right there with Kansas City. But you know, they start looking around. They very well may end up in the AFC wild card division at Kansas City continues roll along. So they're going to be looking around and seeing what's going on in that AFC north and some of the other AFC teams, I'll tell you who I think's done a good job is p Carol Seattle's three and three and everyone left him for dead this year. You know, the the secondary is gone. The defense has gone too. Many guys are gone both sides of the ball yet a quarterback still there, but they didn't have a five win team here. They all three and three golden Detroit this weekend. You know, what they played pretty well. Same problem, though, their individual where the Rams are running away with it. So they've got to look around seeing. Okay. What's what's it like in the wild card division and look around and see what's going on in the NFC north. And how those guys are doing. I don't think you're going get but one team coming out of the AFC north any and and the NFC south is only going to put an NFC is only gonna be one team this year too. Yeah. That that's why I was a French. I'm sorry, the NFC south which be very competitive to. Yes. Good things coming out of there. So it's yeah. That's like I was saying with the chargers. Okay. I'll look it up into a different division out there in the NFC wildcard. What team? Do you think could get that hasn't had a great star could get going this year like Pittsburgh or Houston or somebody like that? Yeah. Pittsburgh offense is so dynamic. They could start getting on a roll. Obviously be pretty good. I think Baltimore is a team that that could be right there. The defense is playing well that was a tough loss. It was great game against the saints. Really? What there's no shame in losing to a good team like the saints. So we've already talked about the San Diego being team that could be I think the Philadelphia Eagles are going to be. Okay. I think that notwithstanding that fourth quarter collapse against Carolina. They do have the champ de. There might be just took to the playoffs. Because if we do then that championship pedigree will kick in Carolina won that game against the giants was killed. The giants broke their hearts that's sixty three yard field. After giving them the lead that killed the giants. They came off that and won the game coming from two touchdowns back against philli. A bad team. You know, they they can do pretty much everything they can play enough offense. They they can play defense there. We know that physical. They we know they've been in a lot of big games. They're tough tough. I could see them be a tough out the rest of the way Carolina. Very good to running the ball as usual. They're getting another forty fifty yards a game by Cam Newton, which was always a little problematic about getting hurt. But I tell you what he is also doing a lot better. He's throwing the deep ball a little bit. He's never had a great deep ball throw up at the last couple of weeks. He's he's connected on the deep ball a little bit better. So that bodes well for them as well. That's you know, that's the new philosophy that is she was to have him. Take shots down the field, which he's doing end McCaffrey's having a good year too. Yeah. He's the balance that he has and the threat to you know, obviously running in and out of the backfield in the multiple things they can do with north Turner is getting more and more creative other getting the balls that Christian McCaffrey, what do you think of the young quarterbacks so far which one which one is the one who was caught your eye of the young guys so far? You know, I think they kind of are who we thought they were there. Look like what Dr valuation was coming out of college. They law or kind of. None of them. Look like the games too big for him. So that's a good thing. Baker Mayfield looks like the guy you're gonna throw it in there. And then gunslinger he's also thrown a lot of interception. Darnold, would he looks good? Looks really good that he looks really bad. Of course, Josh Allen is hurt. He showed some signs again, the incompletion percentage which plagued him in college colleges kind of showing up in the NFL and Josh Rosen just with a really bad team right now. And and but but the game doesn't look too big for any of them. So, you know, we're we're going to see the rest of the way. And and the teams I gotta get gotta get better around them. There's no question about it. Do you think Green Bay's a competitor this year or not really I don't like what I've seen from Green Bay? The struggling both ways. I understand it come back and win some games late because Rogers, but the defense I mean, even the way to nine is cut their defense up. I think the Packers got some problems. I don't know if they're going to be a serious contender this year. Well, as long as you got Aaron Rodgers you're going to be around it again, they have the pedigree that once you get into the playoffs. But I agree that the lack the ability to run the ball consistently. Although they have a little bit better running core right now and ask them diversity there Rogers, hopefully, we'll get a little healthier. But the defense has shown to be, you know, their numbers are solid. But in critical situations they fall through a little bit..

"Donald Donald discussion again, but you know that that's the kind of thing that preseason is more about for me in thinking about some things we know we don't need. We don't need to see the first team offense much. It'd be nice to see the defense because he has a new and you mentioned that hopefully they'll play tomorrow night, but just in that sense alone, I am. I am sort of behind what John McVay is doing here. I think what he did last year, his earned the trust like for this preseason just like, well, if McVay thinks that's what's the thing to do is like, yeah, no, I'm Sean McVeigh. I trust four forty point games last year. Yeah, believe, yeah. It's like when they do the medicine, it up. Yeah, it's you think we're going to see the defense DeMarco I, I would bet you're going to see some defenders, especially awful first quarter it Bill, Brian is saying, look, if you're healthy, you're playing on offense. Yeah, then I would bet that some of the Rams defenders would wanna match up against those guys. When I was a rookie Sean Gilbert was the starting detangle in Jimmy Jones was the starting nose tackle. We had just got Jimmy Jones from Dallas on plan b, free agency. Remember that that's way back when so Chuck Knox, like the draft after the draft that way, Chuck Knox said, hey, look, starters are gonna play two quarters right shot in Jimmy look at me and say, we're only playing fourteen plays. I can care less what he says. So I'm out there can't right. So they're driving down the field on our defense. We get to play like twelve thirteen there in the red zone about to get scored on right there. Fourteenth play ended on the two yard line, and they came running out. Pointed me come on in we said, fourteen plays get an air, defend this thing. Yeah, my first preseason snap was on the goal line. Thanks guys. Welcome to the NFL you so much. I'm excited to see sue too because, well, I mean speaking of tangents, Mike, that we haven't had the Aaron Donald discussion yet today, maybe we will. Maybe we want him. I feel like we've, we've picked all the fruit tree. But I wanna see sue and I want to see him with Donald what that looks like. Because we've talked about this too, if I've got front, if I'm the quarterback and I break the huddle on, I come up and I say, Aaron, Donald here in Dhamma consume there, and Michael brokers over there. And I look to one side and there's a keep to leave. And I looked to the other side and there's Marcus Peters and then her and then I've got lamarcus Joyner a- as my safety, I don't know what I'm gonna do, and I'm not even like a euphemism. I don't know what I'm gonna do because I'm gonna have pressure in my face the second I take the snap. I can't get it out to these guys because they cover like blankets. What do I do? Well, you're going to be in gun most of the time shotgun or that pistol formation. And I would bet this is what you're going to see a lot. So what Baltimore did, what everybody's going to do, you're going to attack the Rams linebackers. You're gonna attack with safeties attack with running backs out of the backfield because you're gonna get instant pressure. When you get Donald back guarantee, you don't have a guy to block them so that ball's going to have to come out fast. And you don't want to throw in the direction of a keep to leap so shadows. He will. He pick it. He will take it back for six in Peter's is almost the same way..

"So I've been on this. I know I know the game. Let me tell you. I know what toxic stuff looks like. That's the thing. I'm like. You keep and could hit what they were like. We're gonna keep this quiet for you other. No, no, we're gonna. Keep this public. You literally think the game's over. I'm telling you third quarter. You bring your back out for four quarter in front of everybody, and we're gonna see how this thing goes. How do you? How do you. Facilitate the term toxic toxic maximum thirty in a political heighten situation. Like we're in right now to a human being that is not ready to or does it think that that term holds anyway, right. Well, how do you? I'm saying, how how would you do? Right, right. Well, you know what? You're talking about toxic. It's like this. You're at a restaurant and boss comes in, he's running around the kitchen. Touching the food and the whole thing. Now you have a signing about them that says, all employees must wash the hand, but the boss never washes his hands. You're saying, I'm the boss, toxic. I'm gonna tell you, it's easy. It's so simple. The boss doesn't want his hand. The boss touch, Samon, man, this out on the work that he, he's all up in the kitchen. He's going about through dignities knows and he never washes his hands. Why don't you wash and an employees are scared to tell them. Air, but he's the ball, but I saw him grab as dig. It went to the bathroom and he went right back out. So people start whispering. They start knowing that washing his hands. But all of a sudden nobody will tell him because he's the ball, I pay all the bills around here and then people start getting sick, salmonella people throwing up. People get like a big guy. Don't go to salad bar in that restaurant, and he's, I don't know what it is, and you know what Boston's doing firing people. People who do watch. And he's putting the blame on all the other. This is how toxic masculinity works because it's all about protecting this right here. I do meet mistakes were made, but not by me. And then you got a system that's toxic, and everybody's scared to say something and everybody's gonna get their head cut off if they do and the whole thing I watched it in football. I'll go to put ball, Chuck Knox, just passed away. He was my coach at the Rams. Do we plan? I was back. It was, I was in camp. Ninety two we running around is the same guys calling me Tyrone all that. I was thirsty. You pussy water, pussy mortar. I'm on the water. Terry crews Tyrone here wants water. Okay, man, I man. I let me just let's just go back to practice. I lost twelve pounds at practice, right? Then people started dying. People start falling out at the high school level college level, and then the pros hit. Corey stringer went down. The hydrated, no water died. You know what they had to have big conference and a big meeting. This is how toxic mass, any work. Maybe we give them water. Due wall bring is another rate right here. More me maybe maybe we. Hi, larry. I appreciate everything that you have said here I've grown from this conversation is as why have a podcast is so I could sit across from people in pick their brains and because they're, they're, they're usually, you know, killers in their film and you.
