Welcome partner bread, dead redemption edition of the down focused. Let me know why did you just say the Scheldt down the show that are you gonna mock my regional accent partner? Is that a filler from New York City trying to tell us how to talk would you like me to defuse or antagonize this situation? Diagnose at some big. So. Took. I seem choke is diffuse right manner of speaking wrong button, which does happen quite a bit. Like, you try to mount horse and you end up tackle lady. That's one was I was trying to get the worst thing about the game is trying to hitch the damn horse, and I was trying to hitch the horse the other day and ended up like like pointing my gun. I think I might hate the trigger onto ended up pointing my gun at just a lay right next to me. And then the lady's husband, the NBC's husband tried to show me the hands then I killed him. But I was in Santa knee. So there's cops log quiz. So I've been had to get on my horse influence. Okay. So listen, just hold your horses. Here held your that's what he was trying to do. Hey was it was, but you know, metaphorically not literally. Let's just all hit the pause button. The only button that doesn't get you shot by bounty hunters. Sorry little inside gamer talk here. Yeah. So we have gamer term we're in the gamers own now. So we have that's why there are no women on this podcast tonight. It's about ethics in red dead, redemption. So we have on the podcast our usual crew. There's myself Spencer hall joined by you know, I'm gonna give you this name. You're you're gonna be you're gonna be Jason parson of death. Kirk. Then there will be Ryan the Bishop nanny. There's your western names, then they'll be Richard. I'm gonna I'm gonna call you the the vulture of the grizzlies Johnson. And then I think we'll go to Matt Brown. Joining us. You know, what Matt we're just gonna play you too tight man, which which brave macho Mormon hero the west titled do you want 'cause I realize we have new options. Oh. Dude, I should have been the Bishop, right? I think maybe it's funnier for its the pitch ship. Because you can in theory may be in one reality actually, be one. That's. No, no, no, no. I'm that Puerto Rockwell Brown there or Rockwell Rockwell one bad ass and all of Mormon history. It's like him and Shawn Bradley, right? Iraq, quoted dunked on Shawn Bradley's asked so bad at church basketball. We are all playing this game. Except for Ryan Ryan is going to be Ryan's gonna be the new stranger in town just walking in from the east. Ask him questions being naive. And he's the greenhorn. Hello. I have money, and I'm waving it around their city slicker. There's wandering around. Strawberry. Trying to figure out how to get back in town. Does anyone know where I could acquire panther pelt and a bath Ryan's walking around saying has anyone seen Gavin? Good friend Gavin. Or my zebra. I've seen to have misplaced him too. We we're going to be discussing the video game red dead redemption to Ryan is going to ask naive questions. Just like a city slicker walking through this dirty streets of Santoni would like a corncob from Ohio, Ohio. How dare you all? So Ryan, you know, I'll let I'll let you shoot. I well real quick just t- up. We know that we are about collectively about halfway through this game. I know Richard. And Matt have made some progress into chapter five we gathered that chapter four is roughly the cutoff point halfway through the game. I have just now entered in chapter five I'm like five minutes and in chapter five, but we're going to attempt to only discuss the first four chapters, which means he will probably do this again once we're all finished with it Spencer. Are you through chat before I am not? However, I will go ahead and tell you don't worry about any spoilers of through the point. I don't I don't care. So anyone progressing further, including Spencer, you if you hear anything that happens in Santa knee. Then now, you know. Yeah. So don't cry spoilers at us because you simpleton life happens in real time. Get used to it. We give. We're giving you we're giving you adequate warnings. I mean except this. It's this podcast which is recorded and then released after the fact anyway, close to live like with it's like nineteenth century live. Right. That's red dead redemption live like, so the Spanish American more started easy. Find out about some that happened twelve hours earlier on the other side earth. Civilization got the sound quality from eighteen ninety nine. I think on this podcast. That's hurtful we're trying. My first question is Dutch. First question is Richard. But it's really frothy. I just want Richard to go first, Richard. What is the thing? Red dead redemption to regularly asks you to do that. You are the worst at it. Probably. Here's the horse. I'm glad at Hitchin whores. And then it's like the thing about it is you have to try and go I I'm on PS four if they triangle hitch, the horse or on hitch the horse, so, but if you miss it, you just either get off were on the horse. But when you get off the horse. You can't really hitch the horse unless you like lead the horse when you're off the horse hitch the horse. It's like the clunky thing I've ever done in a video game. And it's even worse because this is getting there's like not much clunky about this video game. So it really stands out source for shit. Why do you have to hitch the horse? We don't have to hit you. But like when you get a new one it like, I guess like quicker like levels, the horse op builds your bomb or whatever. Oh, but it all it also rests the horse like better or has a horse the horse likes being hitched and more the horse likes you the more dresses tricks. You can do and the faster it can run very logical. This is a horse romance simulator. Yes. If you get to level six we get to fuck the whole e books than video game firms. Yeah. They went also also you can drift on the horse. I just want to mention that. There's a move called drifting. Yeah. No, it is not actually smoking hooves drifting around corners, which was a slight disappointment on my behalf. Maybe you just haven't gotten your horse to like you. Maybe I hates you nitro boost. Net. What is the thing that you are worst at that? Use regularly have to do in a. Yeah. I there really isn't a whole lot to like actually complain about the game. But I feel like the controls when I'm not on the horse, and I have to do anything other than like run straight ahead is what problems happened. Like, I feel that there's been multiple times in the game. What are your head like this big dramatic set piece battle? You're supposed to be zip in from like barrel of hey to tree or whatever for cover and everything. And then what I'm supposed to be like, you know. Making some kind of smooth movement. I then face plants, or you know, actually hit the wrong button. I dive like four feet up into the air and try to like tackle in O'Driscoll on it. It is a little emergent gristle sons, a vicious say, you're a receiver who can't run anything. But go round. A yeah. Or receiver. That's falling. Go round if that goal route two three yards and then a big ten go round. Man you rent there? The force in the horse's like stand around slug. Oh. Was not open horse. Eurabia has got a hell of a governor. Jason what are you worst at in the scam? So the game is amazing and beautiful and basically perfect in like a million ways except for anything that approximates, anything you would do in real life such as opening a drawer and pulling a can out of the drawer because this might take you a up to a minute just to make our her point correctly at the drawer. Especially if there's like four dead bodies in the way, you know, like you have to go into first person camera to specifically look at the can of peaches in order successfully pick it up just because I don't whoever design this. I think they thought that every single move. You make will be exactly as they designed it, which is an aircraft got crazy thing to think for the most like open world game of all time. And that Jackson position is it's almost immersion breaking. But I mostly just find it charming when like. This stupid country foot doesn't know how to pick up a imagine doubles. How many how do you need like lots of cans? Yeah. Yeah. Because you get shot cans. Yeah. And also every time he shoots someone you gotta smoke cigarette. If you're stuck if you're stuck at my favorite is if you run out of the ability to shoot, basically called dead, and it's what you used to target something. If you run out of that one way to get it back is to drink a shitload of brandy moonshine bourbon, rightly, oh, you can't shoot new buddy. Here drink this bourbon, you'll shoot the shit out of somebody like if you're riding from one gun battle to the other. You're looking at your dead, I'm meter and you're like shit. I gotta drink. Some Jan on the way. At least. And then it's also funny today that like one of the other main benefits of smoking at the benefits are myriad. Also picked up like the eighteen ninety equivalent of Pokemon cards. Every time the smoke is smoke a cigarette which people will will give you like actual money for and you need that to get you up. So you also, you know, ransacking these houses that you bird like eighty people trying to find cigarettes, just you can get some trading card of like the eighteen seventies robber barons that someone's going to give you a gold bar other trying grounded in realism because doesn't smoking. I take a little bit of your health away. Yeah. Yeah. Did you lose stamina? So then you have. So you have to go for the the my favorite is the chocolate bar because it raises your stamina annual debt, I just pounding Jannine and chocolate bars and cocaine Gump like this is also I think part of what needs of the the red dead redemption food pyramid. So you've got like. Right at your base. Right. You've got various cans and. Beans, and you work your way up to like big game chunks that I just like dangling off your horse like some demented meet tank as you drive all the way across the country. And then you had the sprinklings chocolate candy and cocaine, and it's like the federal government told me not to eat five candidate. Well, guess how many cans I'm on eight five? Alfred like in your satchel. You have meet that you cooked the day before seven days before thirty days before you kill an animal and you take five pieces of meat off. It you cook them they're just in your purse. They just stay in your purse. You got some extremely old asked me you. On that. That's true. That's true of any Mississippi State tailgate as well though. So yeah, have any guys managed to make Arthur fat 'cause allegedly a bunch of bad food. You can give them. I can't Molly underway colleagues at polygon have a wonderful video all about the inability to make make him a large buoyant. Yeah. It's it's polygon. Vox media's good website. They did a like entire video. It's gotta be like ten minutes about trying to make Arthur read as overweight. It's almost impossible getting ready for big boys. Susan. The name of the video. And the like, they they basically just try to get. You're not trying to give me anything else in the game other than try to get him fat. And it's impossible. You can now that speaks to a larger point about this game. It is so big and the plot is open world. So there are indications of where you should go. Right. However for the most part, you can do what you want. So there are people in your life in the game who are close to you as as characters who I guess see you ride off into the sunset one day. When you come back in my case ninety two hundred twenty days later, they're like, well, Arthur where you've been and I'm like, I was looking for perfect squirrel pill. But then I was eaten by animals seventy two times. And I decided to see how many bar fights. I could get into the row and ended up fighting guy was dead. He was eating turds. And then I was jailed and killed again and resurrected and then I went and tried to get a bad Illich. This is. Basically, you end up being the biggest idiot in person's life, right like match when I was gone second-biggest because they know. Oil. Oakland. Oh, yeah. Fucking Mike him in. I don't we're gonna get there. Okay. Calm down Spencer. You should know that somebody who works with you disappearing for months at a time. When that explanation, that's your that's your life. It's your real life. This is why I love this game. It's autobiographical. All right last last for you. What is the thing that this game regularly asks you to do that? You are the worst app. The worst that basic movement Arthur's, so it's very realistic. Because I think that if you took a bunch of standard nineteenth century people, and then told them to go into the west right that they would suck it thing. You know, because the people who are the people who are doing this, right? They are from Ohio. Right. They are from places where you don't have to. I don't know know how to skin a cougar. So Arthur is in really crappy boots, and he's probably really tired. And then you go. Hey, let's climb this mountain and in a game like Zelda breath of the wild link is just hailed that. He's just going to end up that like some kind of lemur on math because he literally has no other purpose in life. Right. Arthur if you ask him to rain a damn L. If you ask Arthur to climb is simple. Eight foot eclipse eighty okay, just eight feet at incline. Knew our climb that by by four feet up. He's gone. Some blink of this thing because he sucks at it. Could are there could are pass a single event in the presidential fitness test. Fighting is fighting. I have never more felt as as a gamer. I have never more felt that my character is wearing jeans than I do. This is gene would ask game. Yeah. There's anybody Klay in first person. No, no, hold on. I'm trying to pick something up. Only when it's Cayenne time. It is very fun. When you're riding a horse, especially when you're out in near Valentine where where you're at where it looks kind of like a. Kind of like New Mexico, which very pretty first person is very nice there. The first person is also great when you're riding end if you don't know you can go into cinematic mode cinematic mode is where you kind of put the game on autopilot and pulls back when you're riding between things it, you know, the game. Lets you admire these vistas, and then sometimes it runs you into a fucking cliff wall at like twenty miles an hour head first right like don't just out of nowhere, and you know, your horse your horse, distrust, you for a minute if it lives through it in Arthur, loses half, his health and goes goddamn. This is half of the red dead, redemption sub Reddit which I think Spencer night check every morning of our lives now where people people just have horse bloopers most of which are in like cinematic mode where yeah, you know, it's not actually cinematic. The game is actually still going. This is probably I mean, like if I was to think all the stupidest things that have happened to me while playing this game. I think ninety percent of them are some kind of horse accident like literally happened like right before a hop. Don. Right. Like, there was big emotional crescendo. There's like a at the Angelo song happening in the background. Like, it's it's it's very it's supposed to make you feel a bunch of things, and you know, you pay us this vista. And I'm riding along and council plating, my my my place in the west. And and what they're can be redeemed isn't going to be just snack right over this motherfucker carrying bale bale hay. Tolbert twice like lands on the dude the music stops. I I guess I was supposed to be riding. And you like my wife's like the other way to watch behind there. And she's like lapping so harvests ears. Dangelo switches to sing. And how does it? I was I was across a footbridge somewhere. And I hit I instead of getting on the bridge. I hit the post next to the bridge, and I tumbled off the horse but landed on the land and the horse fell into a ravine or something like off clip. Yeah. Did that happen? That's why he got. That's that's what my God that you have multiple horses is know something that's gonna do it like me. You don't even worry about hitching him. It's like well. I'm just gonna drive it into a tree. Anyway. Let's just leave it here. Horses. Why don't you lock your car to wreck? It is what why would I lock it? All right. The other thing I'm really bad at as a bonus is hunting small animals because inevitably in the game when you pull a gun. It doesn't always pull the gun you want. I you have to specify which one. So I would spend time stalking small animals going. Let's get the farm at rifle. It'll be perfect and I'd pull the wrong trigger. Immediately blow away a perfectly good three stars shotgun for the skin of sought off. But. All right. Let's start with Matt for this one which character in the game. Do you hate the most Mike is the worst? Animus is human refuse. He has no redeemable qualities as Spencer can attest to his heart. Headedness is the reason that we can't go bathe in the town that let you drink champagne while you're getting a bath. Because you end up having to like murder seventy five law enforcement personnel to go Busta meta jail. He mocks you for the whole time. I mean, like the cast is huge. And I feel like there are lots of members of the camp that are genuinely like, you know, I I enjoy riding around with Lenny, I kind of enjoy Jose. And and and you know, I think the game is better job of of making more three-dimensional women than extra games do a mica. I just want. I want to drop a howitzer on it. He's the worst personal world. Is that is that the same answer for a room? Yeah. Yeah. The I would love it. If the mission after you break mica out, you can put him back that would be awesome. As soon as I could have paid my bounties. And then I just spent four days in strawberry. Just like, no I've earned this. What is what is Mike is deal? Me some context. Mica Mike is the guy who always Mike is the trigger happy hot headed moron with very little conscience who never ever ever gets it. Right. So Trevor red dead if you play grant. Yeah. But without like, the humor, right like mica, just Micheals there's grasping but worse. Yeah. Like, Mike is just there to turn and easy stagecoach robbery into quintupled homicide that it didn't have to happen where you each walk away with twenty bucks. Right. Yeah. I the first thing. Mike a dozen the game is his any the first the games has a real slow start. Which now I understand why it's a really cool thing actually. But the first part of the game is trying to survive a blizzard. And you find a perfectly good house. Mike is second in the door. Guess what? Mike does Mike burns the whole fucking thing down on accident. Because that's that's your intro to the character is this is the guy who Pearn down the perfectly good house that belongs to somebody else. Who's standing right. There is like what the fuck did house at all. Yeah. Yeah. He he's the kind of person that does all of these things, and then blames it on you, let there are criminals in this bans that possess a modicum of self-reflection occasionally express remorse not for the innocent people because up them, but but the other people within within this camp that part of Mike is brain never developed. It's it is a kidney. It's it's just I went to perpetually do terrible things that inconvenience everybody else with my stupid mustache. And then after you bail them out again, he e calls you dumb, like if it's just one eighteen Micheals, the twelve year old who's like constantly, you know, insulting your mother on XBox live. Like, he's I have nothing positive to say about it. Richard. Do you do despise Mike as well? Trash. Mike is really trash. I'm trying to I was trying to think of a different character. I one I think the way the game like is really on goal like almost feel bad for on goal. Because the first one uncle was like sympathetic. You know, I'll uncle whatever. Like, Arthur like really really hates awful. I have won miss Grimshaw because every time I come back into camp. She goes Arthur, Ben awhile since you contributed to the camp fund been awhile since you've given us anything. And if I go over and look at the ledger some like miss Grimshaw thrown in like ooh to fifty. She add hugging ledger, and like, what are the names on it? Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, Arthur, like, I'm the one keeping this entire place running lady, and it's like Lennie Lennie like two fifty you know, Bill a dollar fifty up with a hundred dollars in this thing. I bought a fucking boat, ma'am about a coupe about you chicken coop. I have a biz bucket, which is filled to the brim with platinum belt buckles that is that is how we survive. Give me lit about last. What do I do? It's very simple. I go out. I shoot nearly broke morons in the head. I take their silver buckles. I do that until I have like five hundred of them. And then I come back and feed my family. This is the American dream did family. This is the saddest form before connived crime effort. Yeah. Exactly. Arctic Arthur went out on his own and just did nothing, but rob people for himself. He'd be richest fuck tied to these people said this is an anti-corporate game. Yes. I in many ways the fine argument against socialism. I'll tell you that. Yeah. Then you got you got Dutch. We just need more big score. We just need a little bit more money. And I'm looking at like bitch four thousand dollars. And I am not exactly frugal. I bought every fancy outfit that they haven't seen to me like how how much money. Do we need? Why can't can you just like live on your own? It sounds like that's a Spencer good for weeks at a time. So you could. As soon as I pay my bounties. And I got back into strawberry. Which if you haven't played the game, it's per picture, a nice little mountain resort town very chill as soon as you can get back into strawberry. The thought goes through your mind of what I just stay here. Why would I go back to those people? They're awful it cost me a dollar a day to pay my hotel. I can I can go rob someone once a month and make enough money to to eat and sleep in this hotel for the rest of my life. And that could be the end of the game. It could just be endless baths than me hog-tying, but clergyman who preaches in the corner every single day for the rest of my life. What's wrong with that? Don't even have to cook. If you don't want to you can go to the Salu, we'll give you a tin full of slop and all the cocaine gum you go. You can ask. Okay. Hang up there with the old prospector. Who's literally Gus chickens from the SNL skit. Is that the one that eats poop or seen a different one? Tear the Turkey Nolde prospector with the bad as like badger hat. Yeah. Damn right. I took his hat took me five minutes to knocked that bitch out in. What it what context is? He knew what I don't wanna know. I'm just glad I'm just glad it's the wild west partner. You wouldn't understand the game allows you the possibility to, you know, leave leave your troublesome gang who only causes you problems behind and just go do something for you. And on that note, we're going to hear a little advertiser content from cinema about the same thing about binge watching about how binge-watching has changed everything in about how you can ignore your responsibilities your duties to other people who aren't pulling their camp. Wait who don't who? Don't even have fifty belt buckles and just binge-watching stead Kayla loves TV I like to tell people that I invented binge watching TV shows, I need it for the long haul. And chances are you're a lot like Kayla over seventy percent of Americans are binge-watch hours. And they feel a deep connection to both the characters and the screens they're watching them on Dr Emily. Steiner is an assistant professor who studies binge-watching at ruin university with a newer screens that are now available because of the crispness the higher fidelity, they allow viewers to see a more realistic world, and that's social realism the greater feelings of connection with the people on those sprains, according to Steiner, it's not just screen size and clarity that creates that deeper connection technology today allows viewers to control not chest what they watch. But where and when they watch it. And this is great news for Kayla. I used to feel truly embarrassed about them out of binge-watching that I am Gaijin. But I feel grateful that the culture is totally supportive of this type of hobby that I have if you're a person who can never say, no to one more episode checkout. The Dell X P S thirteen with del cinema technology for incredible sound. Color and streaming. It's the laptop for people who watch things on their laptop from Dell computers. Thank you to our sponsored Dell you can learn more about Dell cinemas amazing color and Intel core, I seven processor at Dell dot com slash X. P S thirteen that's Dell dot com slash X. P S thirteen next question. I'm gonna lead the Spencer for this Spencer. Do you regret? Anything you've done in this game. So far. A lot. There is a young man in address I believe being used as a sex slave somewhere in the city of Rhodes who is in the basement of the gun shop and the first time you walk in. I think the sequence that the game wants you to do is. Find the guy. Hear his plea for help right because he's being used as a gift by it's a redneck town, right? There has to be some creepy redneck sex thing going on in any game with rednecks roads, a super redneck roads. Kind of looks like either old Atlanta or some old town Mississippi around eighteen ninety nine. So. I go in and what you're supposed to do is hold the guy up and make him free the guy downstairs, and then you can take whatever you want from the gun shop because you're actively blackmail and the guy and you freed his gamp, right? I go in to pull the gun on him. And I shoot him in the head. Just blow his head different form of freedom. 'cause I I've messed up the triggers, and like instead of, you know, a cost it was it was instantly draw. You gotta stop carrying that shotgun. It's my primary sidearm this is just causing meal kinds of problems. So I instantly pulled the gun and shot him. And now every time I go back to rose the guy I went over and talked to him. And he's like you still haven't done anything. You gotta help me. This guy's never gonna let me go. And I go in the script is off like, I don't know. Whether I have to save or do something or whether he's just trapped on there forever. So I just go and say hi to them like, oh, hey. That's his more cruel. So doing buddy here, I'm gonna give you some cocaine. Go. He'd be peppy down there. That's one thing. I regret the other thing I regret is. There is a blind man in the game. And I'm Jason this is a byproduct of reading too much of the sub Reddit. Somebody said, it's cool. If you pull your gun on him, it doesn't trigger any like, you know, defensive responses because he's lined. He doesn't see it. And you know, you're not like censor. Did you shoot the blind room? Ryan, I shot the blind. Couldn't see my wife watching. So I said, hey, this is kind of a cool thing. The game does. Also, the blind and. But worse a put one in his gut. I had to finish him off. Yeah. And there were witnesses. 'cause they went to the cops in there like that cash out a blind man even in. To even in our society. This is very uncomfortable. And my what's goes, what was supposed to be cool. I have a story similar to this. Okay. So I have I have a four year old and who's made it difficult for me to play this game as much as I would like I have learned unfortunately that if I play games with profanity or things maybe I don't want my daughter to repeat and she is awake. She will repeat them. You know? So my kids preschool teachers have a probably negative opinions of me. So my work around here to try to play this game. Is I told penny that this is the horsey game. And when we just don't shoot me, buddy. So we go look for animals in. Yeah. Yeah. And she's like, oh, this is finally Corsi said I like trying to pick up the different animals, the the problem, and this is gonna come up. I think again, and again over this podcast is it's very easy to accidentally discharged firearms. So when I'm design thing, yes, I'm running along of a horse, Mike. Hey, I'm going to be good neighbor. You know, Mr. Rogers bandit here with my four year olds. And let's go just, you know, greets all of the passersby is Aebischer. To a couple of the shock like my daughter's like. What's going on? And like, you know, what maybe we'll play. Mario odyssey. I've seen it a man with my hat now. No. And maybe not tell your mother about this particular story or anybody a church or anybody at school. This is a secret forever. Yeah. Yeah. It's listen this podcast. So yeah. The the Horsa gave bit didn't work as well as I had hoped could try good try. And here's the thing. You know that at some point when rockstar was testing this game. Somebody was like, yeah. We got the tournament ISM. It's just like, wait. She twitchy accidentally shooting people time, we've gotta fix that. And then somebody else was like, but what if we don't? My said, I thought this is America. Richard. Have you done anything that you regret in the game? So far now, man. Now, man, you gotta live like a no regrets. Richard. Have you tied anybody to train tracks yet? No, I haven't done that yet. I there was one Mitch there's one mission wreath last guy. And I think the game wanted you to hog time. What I kinda just like dragged a bat, mama horse. The guy being dragged behind the back of my horse. That's the closest I've really incumbent LASSO. Jason have you done anything? You regret scam? Brother Mukta that? I'm just I'm just roaming the west looking for looking to absolve myself of my sin. So one was destroyed up stupid. There's one where you can go around if you find enough disgruntled postal workers, they will tell you where stage coaches are that you can rob. And I got a good tip that there was one coming out a blackwater if you played red red dead, redemption one, you know, blackwater is very scary place. There's like a massive bounty on you in blackwater. And if you go in it, it's like nuclear bombs descend on you. So don't go in it, wait for the stagecoach to come out of blackwater. And then Robert I'm up on a mountain. I got a good perch, and I see it at what do I do? I get a little trigger happy, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And now there is a wagon parked on the blackwater side of the river. And I'm like, all right. I can sneak across the river and go go clean out. Lag. And it'd be back across. I get over there. There are one hundred dollars in their long story short by the time. I murder what my way back across the river. I have three hundred and fifty dollar bounty on I am two hundred and fifty dollars in the red from this Robert also I died. Which also cost you money. I wanna I wanna talk about that bounty system here real quick because I this is a somewhat strange system for me in a game that really prioritizes, hyper realism, right? You got to remember to take a bath? And you don't get to just like press X forbath you have to fricken hit a bunch of buds to scrub behind your ears like under your toes this stuff. Right. You go in you, go out in the cold and the testicles on your horse shrink. So like every little detail is set up, and then you can murder like seven hundred people NS, you just give a couple of belt buckles if it was just like well Howdy partner. And just kind of forget the whole thing ever happened. That seems a little weird doesn't it make me I thought this was America. Maybe that's how it was at the time. It must have been like is like, maybe this is just the I it's important to remember that you know, as violent horrifying terrible as the America. We live in is now man it used to be even worse. Just even worse. They do a good job of showing. You know, you have this is one of those games where? You know, there's an honor system, and then honor system is meant to sort of save what you can be good or you can be bad. But the we'll be called either way and the works. You are. The easier it is to hustle backwards and how accurate retard it's paying it's expensive to be really really bad. Yeah. Yeah. Your honor rating is high clothes are cheap. If your honor rating is low everyone wants to kill you. All right. Well, that leads into my next question, and we'll serve Spencer Spencer. Are you living honorably in red dead redemption to I am because ultimately it's easier and unworthy? It's just easier to seize your to be good. Also, kind of actually like I'm kind of a sucker for the NPC's who need help. Even the guy who has been bitten by the same snake three times unless you should them. Cy accidentally boil blind man away or as I've discussed in previous discussions of this game. If I come up on a guy who needs to be put out of his misery after bleeding while bleeding out by wolves. And instead of shooting him in the head and ending it. I plug him in the gut and make it worse. And he tells me up you made it worse. You know, I live mostly honorably. Although I do tend to I show favored outlaws, for instance. There is a scene where you pass the chain gang and the chain gang yelling at the boss of the chain gang and the heated argument gets gradually like more intense until one of the bulls at ship and kills him. And I'm standing there on my horse guys look up now like Mr. the same. None of your business. And I'm like, Nope. Nope. Neeman just brought on by these guys and convict uniforms and chain just take off toward the tree line. Yeah. I mostly I'm living mostly honorably, especially when it comes to Robin Hood like feats, if it's like do you want to give this person money? I'm like dollar, buddy. There you go. Richard. Are you living honorably? Nah. Russia's way in the red. I wanna watch you play man. That lines up with your I regret nothing. I've done in this game. I'm not I'm not like me in high school playing GTA bad. Why I like first of all I thought bumpy. It's you on the trail or something like that. And you give me lip. I'm letting that jobs sang, maybe. That's the first thing the other thing like I will I won't kill the homeless. People will ask in Rome's for the blind or anything like that like, I'll just leave them alone. But the other thing is I I kinda play the game. I probably play the game a little too linearly like I really role for mission emission. So if if I'm if I'm on my way somewhere and you sought me like help me, sir. Like, I'm not going to help a lot of times people that if like shows your little thing like minus honor or whatever it is, Richard. You are playing this game. Like such a New Yorker. It's amazing. Excuse me. I lost my child that I need your AB absolutely listen trains, leaving k- walk. Matt do you play this game honorably? I mean to the extent that you can play a game honorably where missions require you to rob and steal and kill people. I think my I think my honor meter is near the near the most positive you can be. I've I helped the terrible nature photographer. I served as the world's worst research assistant. I've done a lot of the side quests. I mean, I'm just a wit when I play video games like this. I had a problem playing GTA because I'm like trying to obey traffic signals and stuff. And like, you know, you know, I felt like a bad person. Like I had to play this game for like twelve hours before I felt comfortable just like bull belligerently, insulting mica and like wellcoll, but I'm still definitely a bad person. But I maybe the least bad person that the gave let you be still kind of progress. So so when you're like super honorable it, you know that like. Cinematic like kill Cam, or whatever like mine is like apparently really gory compared to because when you're really bad. It's like really gory when you're really good. Apparently, it's really like honorable and noble like Clint Eastwood west for like western ship. What does it look like when that thing comes up? Still seems pretty gory to me. Okay. Most of my killing through dead at this point. And it still looks like someone just exploded entire can of like crushed tomatoes. Yeah. It's like, it's like Gallagher, basically. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, man. I bet you shop Pearson. It would be like Gallagher because he's like holding three watermelons in there. Jason are you playing this game? A morally upright fashion. So I feel like I'm being very true to the character. Because Arthur is he's he's not very smart. So when somebody comes up to me and says, hey, feller help my you know, my my leg started getting to bear trapper, whatever Arthur's like, I know how to fix that. Okay. I will. And if you do everything that everyone is yelling at you to do you will have a high honor rating, but I think what is even truer to the character is then you can capitalize on that. And you can do all the crime you want and still have a higher honor rating 'cause you let a cop loose like three hours ago. The the one hack I would tell anyone about this game is if you ever come across a cop who was being held captive, let him loose. And then you have a blank check. You can go shoot up a fucking town and get away with it. You're you're taking the Whitey Bolger approach to this game. I'm being a fake. Good guy. Right. Yeah. Cooperating witness. Like, I have there was I was reading in the mountains. And a dude rancher he said some shit to me, and guess what not only did I kill him. I scanned all his cows. To take them back to camp. I shot one in the head road at all the way back a day journey across the map. And then I came back and skin the other one because you can only carry one skin at a time. I hated that. And yet I'm count it as a good guy because I set to cops free. So Jason's our lives matter. Soccer is an Oklahoma fan. I would I would I would say that the attitude that I have maintained is always this. Which is I will be fine with you unless you are an empty who has impolite with me and refuses a diffuse I'll give you one diffuse. And I don't know if this is the programming or not or if it's just my bias. But the further south you get and the more country things get the stupider they get. So like if you ride by somebody and say, hi, and they go don't have me, Mike. Once like, okay, buddy. And then the guy the horse's like you want to. Dead by then like, fifteen seconds later. I'm looting his body in front of horrified. Dangers going me. And you're like, I just said hi, all I did say, I I thought y'all we're supposed to be Platt. All right. My final question, and we can keep talking about the game after this. I'm not going to tell you what to do. Let's start with Matt Matt what's the dumbest thing you've done recently in this game. I mean, I think the only time I've been caught by the law at this point is when I am king hill full sprint on my Arabian job got nine guys on my tail and it still pretty proud of myself to wreck into a trip and the horse's head baseball. Sue the tree at you. Fly like nine feet up in the air all goddamn roll around whole thing. I do that a lot. And that's I think I think between that. And then spending my limited video game time. Literally just cook are the the two. A big picture thing. Right. You know, like my wife will come downstairs like this. This is this part of the game. I I'm voiding my responsibilities not just in real life. But also video games like go get beans for these people. Just want to shut up. Be quiet. A poker try to make some money. Daddy, cook. It maybe not be the dumbest thing in like the economy of the game. But in terms of the economy of like, how I spend my real life actual waking moments on this earth for shuffling off the mortal coil. Yeah, it's probably pretty dull great don't think about that. Too much. Do me a favor. Just don't put your brain, buddy. I if I did. Thinking about what I actually do for a living. And I get. Well, you know, you could be spending your leisure time on a terrible podcast talking about a video game. Okay. Cool hook. Richard. What's the dumbest thing you've done recently in red dead redemption to it's probably it was kind of near the beginning of the game. You like when it first turns you'll lose. I just kinda start roaming around with accidentally kind of stumbled upon unlike any on pound or whatever, and I looked at the map and the map only showed it's probably like two or three red dots. And I look at this law me, and I was like I bet I got got this. And so I got road in brandished the pistol and just do just came out. And I was. Su there's like no cover, and I dish the horse in it kinda like crouched up to it. So I was just on like just on. So basically, you saw e saw three Bs like that's clearly all the bees there around I'll Al attack. The defense had had had more numbers in the box than you. Exactly. Spencer. What's thing you've done recent game? And I realize you could probably do it from us. I can probably give you three things. But I'm going to start with one which was similar to Richard's. There's a camp of address skills. And there were only accounted they're only about seven of them. They didn't see me coming. And I because I am the master of video game control. I had the LASSO on instead of a gun, and I hit the first one. And I last thought well, let's see how far I can go with this. So a hog tied him while people are shooting at me right in Arthur's. Hold on. Let me twirl this come KOMO cowboy. So I got one that I ran into the woods, and they can't unhugged Taiba them. Right. They just kind of the empty sit there and go. Well, look at that. Home this. Let's go to coamo Driscoll. Do he's been hog tied. I fuck look at that. So I kept running back into camping take losses. But I got a alternately I got all of them hog tied. And then I sit. Go eat some can of beans back in time. Right. And I was like what I do. And I was like, well, I do have fire bottles. So just through a bunch of fire bottles and burn them. Because I didn't really know what to do. But I've done that countless I have done that countless times game where I've seen somebody and they've tried to shoot me and rather than shooting them because it was like, oh, I don't wanna kill them. So it hog tied him Alaska them in hog tied him. And then realize I'm like, oh, I'm just leaving you wriggling out here in the middle of the wilderness filled with Cougars and wolves by right off going just did something way worry. Well. This podcast can't be used as like miserable evidence. Now. Now, somebody would have to listen to it. So you're finding. Can you imagine the detective who's like trying to track spent it doesn't know Spencer but trying like man his MO's? Always the same hog ties all victims than sets them on fire while they're still alive for no reason. Also, there's a shitload of being cans everywhere after east. Series. Though. Paypal should have seen. All right. Let's continue with your tails entity. Other stupid thing I attempted to hold up a poker game after losing one hand in a crowded. 'cause I had a straight flush to the Jack, and they have straight flush to king. And I didn't think that was reasonable. And other stupid thing that I've done in the game, which this is it's short. But it's sweet I I was playing with fire bottles and trying to hunt a legendary animal at the same time and missile legendary animal had hit a hog the hog caught fire the hog ran into my horse knocked me and the horse over. And then I was rammed to death by the legendary animal, so yeah, that's that's bad goes out of that might be might close second. There's one mission. We like, oh, it's the brake lights, you know, cornfields or whatever. And I could not figure out how to either a get the five on work while I'm being shot at or be like throw at the right distance. Like once time, I threw it. The other time, I Sean hate me his fireball on your throwing it in like I do that mission like four or five times. Now one was hard limit. Let me ask you a question. Maybe this is just me because I'm a broken person. But has played this game. Allot altered your have you cut yourself talking like Arthur or thinking in old timey language when you're not playing the game after playing it for a long time because I've I've caught myself not not not quite like just like walking into like, the daycare or like misters or anything. But like I think I've talked to my baby like I've talked to the horse to try to get her to calm down a little bit. I'm not proud to. I'm not. I think it's more like their spare moments when I catch myself not thinking like, Arthur. You think a lot of Carthy anyway. Yeah. That's fair. I did look over. I did look over from the road tonight. I'm on the way, I was driving from Atlanta to Florida for the holidays. Right. And I looked over at a field and south Georgia's the sun was setting in the midst was settling on it. And I looked over. And I was like it's probably some good white tail over there. Three stores, you see a single plume of smoke in your like. There's there's the victim wreck for the picking over there. Jason what's the dumbest thing you've done in this game recently. So I gather from discussing with a few hours ago that I have done by far the most Mosey ING in this game the open world thing the most just wondering. And what one of my side quests there's like a billion side quest, but I really want to get the the best possible satchel which required view to hunt. Twenty one specific animals get perfect pelts and bring them all back to camp. A lot of them one by one this is like a monumental task. In it. If you if you treat the game sort of like, it takes you a whole day to go across the map. Then like you're talking about. It would take this dude. Like two months to pull this off. The the hardest one I've gotten so before. And I'm one short right now, the hardest one I'm gotten was the perfect panther pelt, which it only spawns in one spot on the entire map. And there's only one of them on the entire map at a time. So the one you see that's the only one there is if you don't get it than you leave for like three days to come back to hope it responds as a perfect panther after an income week of trying I was literally camping in a swamp to get this fucking panther. I got it. Blau perfect shot right in the forehead, the Panthers dead skinned it. Yes, I got my health and it's not far back to camp. It's like if you extrapolate the thing it might be like two miles back to camp. There's nothing I got it. I did it. On the way back a filler said something sideways to me. So I got a gun fight. And then there was a big old chase that got died in the perfect panther pelt was gone. So I had to do the whole fucking thing. That's the thing. I did. Let somebody saying across word to me spoil a perfect panther pill manners matter okay manner. Stability matters. Happy iron bowl week free discourse, this feller the discourse on this road is is not up to par. Ms divisive. I do have one idea of one bonus question have all of you encountered the clansman. Yes. Yeah. I wonder that was my one of my questions for everyone. What is the best way to destroy a Klan rally? I have not I am obviously, I'm really looking forward to it. And. Woods. I was hype about the Glenn rally wanna care in the woods. They're in the there in the swamp. Right. I found in woods two different times. Yeah. There isn't there in the woods in LeMoyne. They're not far from Clements Clements point Clinton landing where you like the second campus there over to the there to the west of the road. And there always at night usually doing something in this kind of like extremely tragic comic fashion killing each other. Accidentally. I recommend anything involving fire because those robes really go up. Yeah. Dynamos one. I did was the dynamite is Chuck it right in the middle there. They're supplying their own fire. Perfect. Seems fair. I I had a question for everyone. How are we dressing Arthur's? That's a great question. Let's. Got a fancy boy or -ther. I think he has like a bright green paisley vest. Wow. What a what an expensive coats the hat is the one thing. I haven't done a lot of investing in just because a lose all the time. I get shot. A lot of the hat is gone. I just typically commandeer whatever hat is morals, although I did manage to find the pirate at which is pretty cool. I like him. Yeah. It's it's an it's an Iraq along the big like along the river when you're going down. Skull-and-crossbone type pirate hat. No like like, the try. There's there's there's a legendary like a Viking hat, and you could wear like weird animal masks. There's there's a bunch of things that the parrot has a weird one that I found, but he is my Arthur's is generally dressed a little bit fancier of any probably should give him that he bathes once every ten days, right? Well, when you dress that good, you don't have to bheith. Well, that's that's that's what I was saying. The antigen can't floppy mustache. Okay. What about y'all? So I did have him. I felt I like when apple video games. I usually don't care this much about the character. But in this one I am really invested. I I want to be true to this guy. Give a shit, you know, when when I get back from like a hard day out on the range. We're eating stew with drinking coffee, and we're taking a nap. You know, I have been invested in making Arthur look like how I think he should which is basically a dirt back hasn't give a shit about anything like the beards getting along the hair's getting along the clothes getting dirty for buying a cheap, cheap jeans. But I felt it was true in chapter four after you go to the mayor's house in a tux. And you realize it's easier to rob rich, folks, if you wearing a tux, and then you go to the park game on the vote in you realize it's easier to rob a poker game. If you're wearing a suit after that Arthur invested in metric close it got some we got some blue plaid pants, we nicest boots you could find I got a Panama hat. We got silk vest who Arthur's dripping now, and it is so much easier to rob rich, folks. So this this change this is the ocean's eleven approach. Yeah. Arthur just. If if aware blue plaid pants it's easier to kill people. I will give you three guesses as to how I go in the first two don't count shirtless can't go. Unfortunately, you can't up naked out of the bath, mocking three. Try. That would that would be your choice if kit kit, y'all just imagine the mosquitoes I'm just there are significant parts of this game where you have to wait up to your neck in the swamp to like look for alligators. I'm just I mean, just just just practically speaking Spencer would be swamp thing if they let. Like that really upsetting. Because for a while. I had some really nice bear chaps. You tell the bear you want everyone to know, you're gonna wear your hair shops. But then it's gone the swamp, and it's like damn I'm wearing bear for swamp stuff. I wear pelts whenever possible. Through Santa knee, and you hear people going country town like people will people will snap on you as you're walking down the street. If you're wearing the wrong thing, it's amazing or or the while. Oh, yeah. And you can see like the little flies above your head and everything like, the cut scenes has been a minute. If in fact, your if you check your status on your Arthur, minus forever like like fatigue underweight. Healthy. Especially I think when you get later in the game, and you realize that you actually have to eat to like regain your health. It's is more efficient with people shooting you to just drink some medical tonic then and then you forget that. Yeah. I haven't eaten in four game days citing on various oils. Grip bullying gambling. Yeah. I like I like, I like cases Dana Hoeger Sohn barrel and across the west. I like Gheysens Arthur who just roams around drinking gin and eating chocolate like some sort of race really wanna cut in find suit. Like an eleven year olds idea of a grownup. No can't. To ride this horse and didn't ice cream from I got I got my tux on it. I'm eating no jobs. When I grow up aware a bear hat eat nothing but chocolate and top people to train track. And fish, the most fucked up thing, I did was there is when you come across who wants you to mail him the carcasses of a perfect rabbit in a perfect squirrel their entire bodies. Not just their pelts. The only thing is you figure out that you have to do them. You have to kill them both at the same time, basically because if you kill a rabbit and towed it around to you find squirrel, the rabbits, it all nasty, and then you won't be able to mail it. So I walked up to the post office. I am a perfect rabbit. I was gonna try to mail that one and they won't take it. And I'm like what the fuck it's its grab it dude wants me to mail him. Perfect rabbit. So then I realized that you have to have them both at the same time. There's a train track right there. A set the rabbit down on the train track. Just to see what the train does. And it it scoots the rabbit along just scoots the Rapids. It goes. So could you mail that one? And that's how you invented greyhound racing. Good job. It was no longer perfect. I'll tell you that much poor pills. Prichard? What about do? We have do we have alternate. Uniforms. Like, do we have a cold weather gear? Hot weather gear. Yeah. Fancy town gear stuff like that. I will leave it on way too long. Like, I have the winner gunslinger on we'll be like you're hot. Like what the fuck game? Why would I be hot? And I'm wearing the bear hat and a heavy coat. Yeah. The the stamina penalty you get if you go up in the mountains and just like your union shirt, and like flip flops is pretty significant. That's still yet. So fucking big ten of you cheeses. It's not that cold. I can wear shorts. It's fine. Sandy never plays road games. Roads never goes up the grizzlies. They never leave the state. I wanna actually I wanted to ask. Annabel never gets to play in the LeMoyne ballgames. In this is this is the like slightly sincere question. But what's the coolest thing that you've either seen or just driven by really ridden by or done again? I got I got where you were like this is unexpectedly. Beautiful. I want to hear Richard's first because Richard is playing this the most depraved way. So I wanna know. What's the coolest thing? I've seen. Yeah. Or done. I'm trying to think I don't know like Ryan in Ryden into a city of it. Well, here I'm gonna show my courts here Ryan into like Santoni at night and just like raising a little bit of hell like just pop caps off in a couple of people. That's. Just is like it's there's a couple of times when you because the cops are insanity are kinda like swollen all over the place. It does the thing. We're on the map. It's like a red circle. And so sometimes I'll of like ride into town long. It takes the cops like find me. And then just initiate chase or something like that. Just giving them some exercise, exactly. What about you met? It's a little bit of spoiler here. But I shot a bunch of o'driscoll's from a hot air balloon, and that is cool still. Wow. I didn't know about this. Keep playing. There is a chase scene. And let me tell you something steering a hot air balloon is hard. So there were there were a lot of, you know, zeppelin accidents. I think you have to like maneuver around a bridge. And there's there's rescuing somebody who's like on horseback from your balloon, then you just get to Kappa budget people will from way open the I was not expecting that. And that's that was a delight. Get admitted into court a law that I I'm just saying if you don't mind. People from a hot air balloon. This segment will be trial. That's all this. This is why not allowed back in New Mexico. Jason what was your? So I wrote a few things down can I run through list? And if you have seen these things can you call it out 'cause I don't know how the meteorite crater. No, no, I have not seen this. There's a big ass meteorite crater, and I came upon a inner rainstorm. So I saw the trees were bent out at me. And I'm like, wow. This wind is really blowing. But then I come over a hill. And it looked down in this you'd black crater with his rock in the middle. And you go down, and you look at Arthur draws a picture of Iraq fell from the heavens. The miniature church in the swamp. Yeah. I have seen that one. Okay. It's like it's like a tiny tiny building. You think it's a shack. And then you walk in. It's church that would fit like four children. It's I found it a night to this pretty fucked up the iron clad in the lake and sandy missed it. Now is that the one that you that you drive in like heavily lake bound shit. Yeah. That's pretty fun. Yeah. The swamp zombies. No. Yeah. Get on the swamp. It gets weird. When you help the guy build the electric chair and test it. Boy, that's fucked up brother somewhat you to shoot them in the head in order to impress a lady twice. Just for fun. Jason did you deliberately fail that mission? Just to see what would happen. I didn't know because I was I was in town. I don't have time for all that. They get you failed. And you have to go again. But the lady is extremely unimpressed that's fucked up. So if one of them gets died one of them gets shot in the head. It doesn't even work. You gotta you gotta redo it. Have you found the strain? So what have you found the ghost train? No, there's a ghost strain. What is what do you mean? Go screen a it's a ghost train like a spectral train. Yeah. The whole train is a ghost Pam it's out near. I think it's endless swamp. Like around the Moines it's in the middle of night, obviously. And this is my favorite single favorite thing that I have discovered is the art gallery brawl. An I know what I'm doing after we get off the phone. So in Santa neither is a French dude you meet in the bar, and he draws you a picture. Anytime that dude pops up on the map after that go find him because you eventually get into a massive melee in a museum and ever feel as as he's been drawing naked paintings of their spouses. You're looking around the room in this one do these like last mile wife? My husband's but. Many us Paul breaks out all these rich people twenty other in the face. Yeah. You've wandered. You've come help. Yeah. Yeah. I like the Mosey. This gave rules. I have one time. I was up in Rocky Mountain national park with my brother and being real smart. We didn't take enough gear or the right stuff. Or check the weather report. We just went up to the lake and a storm rolled in over the mountains. And you know, when it happens like. Happens fast because you can't see it. Right. Just blows up on you. And it turns really weird weird dangerous looking shade of like purple white and a hailstorm kicked in. And there was lightning in the only place. We really had to hide were under some like low scrubby bushes. And I thought this is jacked up that's not good. And in about fifteen minutes. It was over. But it was a very intense fifty minutes, and I'm very stupid. So as playing the game, and I was up in the mountains like in the grizzlies, and all of a sudden this like weird light came in and the storms that are rolled in. I was like well, we've get Arthur to camp and as a setting up. I was like oh shit. They nailed it. They got the exact same light. Like I'd read about how in GT a five. They'd really studied the light of Los Angeles and wanted to get it completely. Right. Somebody's spent a ton of time just up on Colorado or Utah or Montana doing this. Because it like it almost triggered a sense memory for me. I was like I can smell that. That's the coolest thing that's happened. While I was like, they got it. So right. A triggered one of my own memories. This game. Definitely is unique among video games have played in that actually does make me want to go outside. Yeah. I think you've written about that about red dead, redemption one. And I've thought about that a couple of times Taylor will walk into like we we need to go to nickel camping again. Which is typically not a reaction. You have when you're playing say GTI within you never wanna go outside ever again because there's people out there. But they really did do a very good job with that sort of thing. Especially the night scenes in there are two different things. I'm thinking of one is if you go away up in the mountains, and you look south you can see the lights of Santini, which is like insanely far across the map. And the other is at night on a clear night. You can look up and see the galaxy like you can see everything which if you go out very dark parts of America. You will be able to see the galaxy. And like I've been in. It's funny. You say that because like I have been for a long time. Like, I gotta get out because some of these like, you know, like official dark sky parks where you can literally see like completely everything. And then to see that in the game is like, yeah. Okay. I I definitely gotta do that, you know. So so what I'm hearing is that playing lots of video games are in fact. Good for you. Yeah. That's a conclusion I've come to. Well, that's that's I mean for I wanna thank you all because again, I haven't played this game. Don't know when I will probably will at some point down the line when I'm like f I get divorced now. It's fine. I'm not there yet. So, but if I had to if I just take one thing away from this conversation. I think it would be this. I am never saying across word to Richard ever again ever. Not not not as a joke. Never. I am only saying nice polite things to Richard. Better Call Saul's showrunner tells us everything about the show's amazing finale
Support for this podcast and the following message comes from smart water, not satisfied being like other brands. Smart water looked up at the clouds and said, I wonder if we can one up mother nature for a pure crisper water and guess what? They did smart water vapor distilled for purity, electrolytes for taste. Hello and welcome to. I think you're interesting. I'm Todd van der. If the I ninety interesting and the guest we have on today his show I wanted. Want so badly. I don't know. I didn't want it to be bad, but like I was so skeptical of it going in. I think a lot of people were, but let me set the scene, the show we're talking about is better call Saul. It's a spin off of breaking bad, breaking bad as a beloved television classic that people love people watch people devour. People watch over and over again. It was the show where I, I loved it all the way through. I felt a little less excited about the last episode than some people selected. Didn't like make me stop loving the show. But definitely it was like I'm ready for breaking bad to be done. And then you find out there's going to be a spin off in its better call Saul on. It's about the lawyer song Goodman, and there's all these sort of complicated layers of he some other person, Jimmy Gill, and like I was skeptical. And if you go back and read my very first review, like it's a positive review, skeptical, positive review, but over the course that first season and then the second third seasons, especially like, I really grew to love this show. Oh, to like really think of it as one of the best shows on television, the best dramas on television and a show that digs into big questions about morality and why we are the way we are in psychology and philosophy in a way that is similar to the series that birthday breaking bad, but also very different, their companion series. I think in the best possible way, which is that they're examining some of the same questions, but they look at it from perspectives that are just sort of diverse enough that you get a full view of these big questions about like, why do we do good? Why do we do that? What is doing good? What is doing that? And the show better call Saul just finished its fourth season. I'm hoping it runs for a couple more, you know, maybe even more than that, but it was really terrific season of television and ended in a finale that I'm not going to spoil for you, but really just like everything about it was so satisfying to me and if you've watched it, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't put our. Are you doing? So we have the show runner and the co, creator Peter Gould on today, he worked on breaking bad, and then he co created and show runs better, call Saul, but we're gonna be talking about just sort of the show in general. So if you've never seen it before, we're going to be talking about the show and some of these higher level questions at digs into. And then at the end, we're going to get into a spoiler discussion of season four. So if you don't want to be spoiled, you can tune out at that point. We'll give you ample warning, but this is a really great discussion about one of TV's best shows. So even if you haven't seen it stick around because Peter's a really thoughtful guy, and I think you're going to have a really fun time listening to our thoughts about better call Saul, and then you should go watch like this, go, go, pull it up and watch it. What else do you have to do. Heater. Thank you for joining us now is a pleasure. So this season we just completed season four on Monday of this episode's going out on Thursdays then kind of is how the time line works. So we just completed season for and one of the things that I find interesting about the show is like you are increasingly having to write to what we know about these characters from breaking bad, the show you spun off from and I'm wondering how you determine that sort of that delicate balance of, yes, we need to fill in this blank spot in their back story versus this. The audience can probably just figure out on its own boy. That's a that's a great quote we, that's you're talking about one of the main things that we argue about. I don't argue about but Rangel about in the writer's room. How important is it that we hit this point or that point? And I think one of the fun things about the show is the way we fill in some of the questions that breaking bad raises, but. I don't think that's the focus of the show. I think the show is really about these. These characters, Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler, and Mike Roman trout. And we try to make sure that everything that we put in the show has to do with their journeys in their progress and that we're not just throwing in breaking bad stuff for the fun of it. You know, you do though have to like, you can't just be like this is a parallel universe where breaking that never happened, you know, like, do you have you ever been? I don't wanna say frustrated, but if you ever found yourself at a place where you were like, you know, we wanted to do something, but the original series contradicts at something constantly constantly. There are so many characters that we'd like to bring in. You know, is it possible that saw meets or the Jimmy meets this person? Ted Benecke. Could could Jimmy meet Ted Benecke well, no, because on breaking bad, there was a scene between Jimmy and Ted, and it was very clear. They had never met before more low Jimmy actually saw and Ted. So it's a yet constantly were coming up with ideas that we get very excited about briefly. And then sometimes they get shot down that happened on breaking bad too. You know, we had just thinking back, I'm breaking bad. We had a scene between te'o and te'o in the cousins and the Gus fring. And then later on we decided we wanted to delve into the backstory between these characters. And so we said, is it possible? Is it possible that Teo Hector head shot max who is of course on breaking bad, of course, if people have much breaking bad. It'd be incomprehensible to them. He was ended was a character we had to look at because we were doing a scene that took place before the scene that we'd already shot we had to think about is, is this possible. So sometimes we end up assuming things about the show and then watching the scenes in the writer's room in finding out, wait, that's not true. Or in one case, there's a a bunch of dialogue that actually wrote for for breaking bad kidding. Thank God dropped. That established all sorts of things about salts background. Oh, well, you got lucky there. That's true. But the question is delete. Do we have to adhere to deleted scenes? Yeah. What do you think? I don't think so. I feel like if Frazier can get away with him saying his dad was dead on chairs, and then his dad's very much alive on Frazier, and he's just like, I just lied about it because I was mad at him. I think he can get away with anything. Oh, wow. Yeah. Well, that that's a hell of a show. So it's good, never Frazier, it's good enough for us. One of the things like, how do you, how do you keep the all straight because you don't have like game of thrones levels of mythology like you don't need to remember what happened five thousand years ago in this universe. But I mean, maybe you do. I don't know, maybe like the pre Columbian like whatever is important to the history of this show. But do you have like a? Do you have like a whiteboard to have like a like a guy who remembers everything like how? How do you keep straight now? The two shows that where the timeline has to sort of roughly match up. We have a lot of brilliant people with very flexible minds. Especially area Levin, who's our writer's assistant an aerial, can she has an encyclopedic knowledge of the show and she can also call up. She has all the scripts for both shows and so she can do these very fast searches looking for things. And it's very rare that we have to wait for more than a couple of minutes to try to see, you know if we've mentioned something before, we've mentioned how old Mike son was when he died. We can find that out pretty quickly and it gets very confusing. I mean the now we're in a situation. It's like rubik's cube. It's we're in a situation where we've also established things it in different timelines, dabbling things in the during the time line breaking bad that actually take place on better call Saul. We have this gene storyline which takes place after breaking bad, which is when Saul Goodman becomes gene, tack, Vic. And he's he's a scapegoat to Omaha, Nebraska, and it's really hard to keep all these things straight. But I think one of the pleasures hopefully of watching the show is the feel that the world of the show works that it has a consistency and that we're not going to take back things, say things and then take them back or change the rule. Suddenly we do our damndest to play by the rules that we've established are ready and and so far we've been able to, but it gets really confusing Nino when lost find landed somebody edited it so that it was in chronological order. And I hope somebody does that was the whole Assago because I think like like some of the start, like I believe that better call Saul would both be the first scene you saw in the in the breaking bad talk. I end the last seen probably I don't know. You know, that might very well be what's true right now. Yeah. Yeah. One of one of the things I wanted to sort of ask about is I'm interested in the development process of the show in unite talked about it before, but it was long. It was strained for a while. You guys kinda thought maybe it was a comedy, you know, and yet for as funny character as Jimmy slash, Saul can be this show is and I don't wanna call one of the saddest on TV because that's going to turn a whole bunch of people off, but there's a real weight to it's tragedy that you won't find on a lot of other shows. So tell me about kind of finding what the show is going to be in then finding the tone. That's right. Let's not forget to mention that it's funny in action pack, not just not just a profound slog. Yeah, hope. Yeah. I hope there are a lot of great jokes. There are a lot of great action sequences, but yeah, like like when you walk away from a season of this show, you feel that way. You know, you know, I think the key for us has been to follow the story and to follow the really defile the characters, and to be honest as we can about who who these folks. Are and what they wanted a particular moment and not try to shove them into things that we our preconceptions. And I will say that, you know when we started, I think we used to say that you know breaking bad was eighty percent drama and twenty percent comedy was going to be eighty percent, comedy, twenty percent drama. Boy, did that turn out to be. Having said that we have some secret weapons and one of our secret weapons not so secret really is that Bob Odenkirk is one of the funniest people around and the fact that Bob can switch from scenes that are actually kind of silly. And I mean that a good way there funny in light and playful, and then he can go to very dramatic scene, very abruptly. It's remarkable. I don't think anybody else can do it quite the way Bob does because he has those sketch comedy chops, but it's he's not doing sketch on the show. He never is. He's always Jimmy, but he can layer on top of Jimmy, this sort of this. This almost sketch comedy element in. I don't know how he does it. We right to it. And I think that's the other trick is that we, we try to write to not just are ideas about the character. But the characters as we've actually seen seen them on the show and we've learned so much about them. Now having said that going back to your, I think what was your original quake? The original question was the original question was about how how the show was conceived. I think it was faded from the beginning just because Vince an I and you know, lucky enough to get a bunch of the other riders from breaking bad. There's not a preponderance anymore, but there are a few at the beginning who were on breaking bad, it's kind of inevitable that the chemistry between us and the universe that we were working in. It was gonna have a tone of its own. Having said that, I think the DNA of both breaking bad better call. Saul is all wrapped up in the main character. And I think that's what makes specially breaking bad unusual. You see a lot of dramas which are conceived originally as on psalm. Bulls and Vinci's idea for breaking bad was always that would start out very much as wall story and then branch out become on samba will. And I think that everything that happened in breaking bad really grew out of his conception of the character of Walter white and the things that we learned about Walter white as we went, I think the same is true on this show except on this show if course we have two characters. We have Jimmy McGill. Well, actually there's way more than two, but but two characters who were, I would say, carry the DNA at least at the start. It was Jimmy. And then of course, Mike played by the fabulous Jonathan banks. You mentioned, I want to kind of go back to something you talked about, which is, you know, Bob Odenkirk has these sketch comedy chops this cast, and the castor break met are just full of people who are great at comedy, like racy horn has done so much great comedy, Michael McKean, of course, even Patrick Fabian stunned some really funny stuff over his career. What is it about putting people known for comedy. Dramatic roles that you think works because this has been this has been a truism over time. Is that like people who are good at comedy can often be really great drama too. I think it's as simple as that. We just said. I think it was always Vinci's theory on on breaking bad because if you can do comedy, you can probably do drama and no one's better sample than Bryan Cranston who went from Malcolm in the middle to breaking bad. And I think it was a great creative leap, and it was also very courageous events and also of Sony AMC to to cast Brian. But he's, you know, it's in arguably a fantastic actor and very funny. I just think that's been baked into our approach right from the beginning. I think there's a magical thing that happens when you add comedy drama, because the the comedy makes drama. Feel deeper and drama makes the comedy funnier, and it's we're not. A comedy, not in the sense of veep are jokes are not those kinds of jokes, but I think the show is funny and I think that a lot of it comes from the moving back and forth between the two tones and thank God. It's worked so far. I just see so many TV dramas nowadays that don't have any levity, and it was worth a couple of years ago, but, but now you know, I feel like we're coming out of it a little bit, and I think about like there was a time when I was having huge fight with my wife, like one of the worst fights we've ever had and I was cracking jokes like I was a character in a sitcom and like she was too. It's like, I feel like there is that that thing that when we get into these dark places like sometimes are most human responses to try to be as funny as possible. But I think that's, I think that's completely true. And I hope you guys you're getting along better now. I mean, that was like ten years ago still hanging out together. That's good. If you have the it's true. I mean, comedy, laughter is part of life in sometimes the only response you can have to. The most disastrous things to smile and make a joke and that you know, we always see that in people who are under the worst circumstances. You know, obviously everybody's different. Every circumstance is different, but I agree, I think, I think, well, I always thought the sopranos was incredibly funny. Hilarious is not really, you know, the wire too. Also, I delayed for years before watch the wire. We my wife and I only watched last couple of years because people said, well, this is this the great work of dramatic art of the twenty first century, and it is so entertaining. And so funny. But this is the lad for the wire right here. Watch if you haven't watched it. You should. I think that we TV critics have a tendency to like, you know, adjust our ties and make everything sound like very serious in like a lot of the time, the best dramas are also the best comedies in kind of vice versa. Like I look at a show like, I don't know if you watch us the good place and they turn out plot twists like some of my favorite dramas in just like so many. Exciting ways like we have this weird Kadhamy between the two and television that doesn't really need to exist. Sometimes I, you know, it's it's hard to write about things, but I think we get mixed up between thing saying that something is serious and something as dour and I to me the the literature in the movies that excite me the most have a mixture of tones. Right? And you know, so that's we aim for, I think, yeah, I think there are things that have serious themes but have levity, you know or not. And I think I think that's really smart. We said about the difference between series dour because like you can have a serious conversation, you know, full of jokes like we were talking about, but I want to sort of talk about you co created the show with with Mr. Gilgen Vince Gilligan, and you know he's involved this season while, but he's kind of step back now. And when you go in on any TV show, taking over the show, runner is a daunting prospect, and I want to know what you learned from him that made you sort of moving forward. On the show made you feel comfortable like you knew what you were doing even as it's a job that nobody can ever know what they're doing. You know, I think I learned everything from Vince, you know, working on breaking bad, he is was the greatest Showrunner training program anybody could ask for because Vince he's got a vision. Let's use that creaky term. He's got a very specific way of looking at things, but he is complete, opened hearing about other ideas and he ran the show and we run this one very much for writer. Producers, the writers on this show go set the the writers produce their own episodes to a great degree. Although we have a wonderful producing staff to the fun for me. The thing that I always wanted to do from probably before high school on was just to be involved. I didn't know what I wanted to do in film. I just wanted to do everything. And the wonderful thing about this job is that you get the stick your nose into everybody's business. You get to play. Play and to have fun and to experiment with the greatest cast the greatest production designer. The the, the greatest sound team immaturity, and it's, that's the fun of it was incredibly daunting and Vince Gilligan, I don't wanna use any overused terms. He's a very unique guy, and he is he is brilliant and also very generous and seeing him do the job. One of the things I realize that you don't have to be an asshole to do good work, and that was one of the things I think always worried me about getting into a job like that because I don't want to be an asshole. It's not something that comes easily to me. It's not in my is not in my easy vocab. I'm sure I have been asked hall too many people, but it's not myself image anyway. And Vince is somebody who is very, as I said, very generous and open at the same time as is a terrific leader and so getting to work with him on breaking bad. Was incredible. Of course I started off on breaking bad. I had never been in a writers from before. I'd only ever written by myself or with a single writing partner. I never worked on a series before. I'd only worked on longer pieces and it was just wonderful. I just loved every bit of it. And then since we created salt together and we ran together, we were joined at the hip in the first two seasons, especially. And so you know, you just gain these things through osmosis or us. I don't even know how you say. There you go. You you gain, you gain a lot of that. And of course we put together along with, you know, the producer's like Melissa Bernstein put together just a wonderful team. And part of the part of the trick to show running is to have an idea about where to go and have have an idea about what the show is, but to also be open enough that other people can bring their own creativity to it. And that's how we run the writers room. It's how we work with directors. We try to. We try to have a very specific idea of what the point of every scene is, and we have ideas sometimes about the visuals of every scene, but how the director gets from point eight point be or from a to z is is something that we work together on, and it's so it's like to think, I don't know. It's a long winded way saying, I mean, look, I had insomnia, nights sweats, terrible nerves, but also the fact is that Vince is around, you know, if I need his input. On something. He's very, very valuable for that. You can just text I can text them or call him or sometimes he's in the office. Yeah, yeah. Talking about that. What's at time when sort of early may be in the show when you had kind of an idea of something you wanted somebody else came in and said, I think this would work and you're like, yes, that's better. I know it happens a million times on every TV show, but like people are often thrown that happens. Well, one of the best examples I can think of is episode to await LaRussa Kondracke easy was the director of that episode. We had as an opening a scene wonderful seeing that Tom schnauzer had written a very visual scene, which was about one of these ice cream trucks coming over the US border, and it gets examined and taken apart and nothing's found. And then it gets the other side of the border and the driver gets out and recovers a gun and you realize, oh, this is a guy who works for Hector Salamanca and LaRussa contract. He came in and she pitched us. She said, what if this is what if the whole sequence at the border is all one shot? And I don't know if she brought up touch of evil, the Orson Welles film. But that was on that was on our minds and I was a little bit nervous about it. But we said, you know. It's pretty cool. Let's do it in the wonderful thing about having a director like that with a such a wonderful. I said, just stronger. To'real sense is that inspires everyone who works on the show. And so we had the whole crew got very excited about doing this immense single take the goes that goes over the Mexican border that goes past all these trucks in you end up seeing inside the truck. It was very complex shot. The took an entire day to do and also, you know, we had had some digital trucks and whatnot and take some things away. But that's a perfect example of a director, having a great idea and topping what we had in the script, things like that happen. Literally, it's wall to wall in the writer's room because when you ask the question, my first thought was something that happened like two hours ago that I can't talk about because theoretically it's going to end up in season five, I don't wanna do any foil all. I don't want to do any fourteen month premature spoilers. But you know, that's the thing about our creative collaboration is that you venture something that's not quite finished. Sometimes the example that I always think of with this is actually on breaking bad because breaking bad. We knew we had this character Tortuga who was going to be a decapitated and then said how we're going to reveal this decapitation and Vincent. I have this just this image of the head moving through tall grass. And then somebody else said, what is this? This head is on top of tortoise. This is all a d. a on and we're all very excited. And then George masters, one of the other is that and then it blows up and we all said, no, that's too much. But no, it was right. Yes, exactly what that's exactly what happened on the show, and it's. A feeling of that's the thing I love about television is that you feel like you're on a team and it's everyone's working together and for a writer, it's a wonderful feeling because as I said before, you get to have your say in all the different areas of filmmaking somebody who had previously written by yourself and writing is, you know, the stereotype is writing is a very solitary process, which it is to some degree. You always have to work with an editor of some sort. But for most writers, it is you sit in a room and you type somewhere words up in. It's very different in television. So like how quickly did you sort of adapt to enjoying working with a bunch of people immediately the sim walked into the room. It was terrifying actually the first week because I was not sure what was expected of me and Vince walked in the first day and he had the second episode of breaking because the first episode of breaking bad or have been written shot. They had the first episode of the season or card in on a board, and Vince has this. Extremely precise handwriting, and he had it laid out on this this cork board, and it was beautiful. There were some changes made after that, but it it all made perfect, lucid sense. And it was exciting. It was. It was a really thrilling episode had great act out s- great character pieces in dialogue and everything. It was all there on that board. And my first thought was, oh, I'm going to. He's going to send me home for the weekend supposed to come back with that, and I didn't understand that we were all going to work on these things together. Once I understood that it was just a blast. I think the part that wasn't a blasted I was writing the actual scripts which because the other scripts were. So I wanna say fucking. You can say they were so fucking good. I remember reading the the pilot breaking bad is a great great episode. But then I remember reading Vince wrote the first three episodes himself and reading those scripts it you just couldn't put them down and then petty Lynn wrote the next one after that. And then George masterless who is just an incredible writer wrote that episode that introduced to go Salamanca and I felt like there was this train coming down the track. And also as time goes on, one of the things that happens in television is the later you are in the lineup, the less time you have to write the script, right? So early on, it's just the way it works. You end up with less and less. So I kept on looking at the calendar and how many days I was going to have to write my first script. And I, you know, I started shooting my nails a little bit. So when I turned it in and Vince was happy with it and ended up being the season ender for the first season, which was not the intention, which is another story altogether, that was a real thrill in a was was very affirming. And boy, I'll tell you as a screenwriter, nothing beats writing something on Tuesday and having them shoot it on Monday just to get to see Bryan Cranston dean Norris do a scene performance seeing that you've written. It's just it's a thrill. I, I heard once a Vince gave a talk or something. He was saying that early in the show, you know you, the only one has the idea of the show in your head and you kind of need to teach all the writers how to do it. And then gradually, that becomes the rubric. Everybody operates under Enna's. New writers come in that can be taught, you know, whatever. I'm wondering what I'm better call Saul, like what is the thing that, like if I was going to join your writer's room, I might think, okay, this is how they write the show that like is sort of the opposite of that. Like what's a, what's a rule of writing better call Saul that maybe you haven't even had to articulate. Oh, what a great question. I think the thing that would surprise you about the writer's room was how little time we spend thinking of cool stuff and how much time we spend trying to understand what the hell is going on with the characters and how to express it. That's the big hurdle. And right now, this is airing this podcast is area after season finale. Yeah. One of the things that we're talking about a lot is is what's going on in Kim Wexler head. How does she interpret who. What just happened at the end of at the end of episodes, four, ten. And we thought we knew when we, by the way, when we wrote the episode, we thought we knew, but then you always go back and then reexamine it. You know, it's funny, I it so much of it is trying to understand people and to relate it to your own experience and you'd be surprised at how much you know we, we were just talking about your fight with your wife, how much we ended up talking about things like that and think about things in our own lives and how we feel attached or how we think Jimmy feels attached in what his reaction is to her. It's a, it's a lot of that. It's a surprising amount of of just trying to understand the psychology not in some big, broad sense, although there's that too, but just a moment to moment. What is she thinking? Right this second. What is he thinking? Right this second. And then once you know that, then you start saying, so what does he do and or if he thinks. This is the way forward, what's his plan? What's going to happen? And those discussions are actually go a lot faster usually than the psychology problems. Usually if we don't, if we get stuck, it's usually because we don't understand the people fully. So that's that would be I know that sounds kind of airy fairy, but that is that is the fundamental of it. And the other thing is the most useful thing in the writers room for us often is to somebody coming up with some idea out of left field, especially if it's based on something that's already happened on the show. Yeah. In other words, it's fun to talk about. I'd love to see this happen. There are scenes that I pitch every season between specially Mike and Mike and Jimmy, there are these elaborate sequences. I'll say this happens and that happens in this happens in that, then we'll, we'll smile about that or people will smile and nod. You know, some respectfully or forbearance, and then we'll get back to the real, the real nitty gritty, which is how to get from point a point be and what is what is that the greatest thing is when somebody says, you know what? I always wondered. I mean, I think the big breakthrough on our on this particular show was when we said to ourselves, well, we know what Chuck is Jimmy. We know what it's like being Chuck's brother. 'cause Chuck is kind of overwhelming. He's brilliant and he makes Jimmy 'field. Small. Jimmy also feels like he wants to take care of Chuck and we we understood all those things very, very quickly. But then when we saw Michael McCann playing the part, we wait a minute, what does what does it feel like to be Chuck and what does he think of Jimmy? Because we didn't know. We didn't know. We didn't know when we started the show that Chuck had sandbag Jimmy's career. We didn't know that it was there in the pilot. If you look at it now it seems really to me, it seems very. Clear, but we didn't understand it well. And so a lot of what we do is going back and somebody saying, you know, I wondered what you know what was happening in so-and-so's head when he or she did that. And sometimes it'll be, you know, a character will of done something and maybe it was short shortcut for us. We'll say, well, why? Why? Why? And those are. Those are all the great questions. You know, TV in some ways kind of spoiled me when I go see movies because I saw the new star is born and I really want like I was like, I wanna see every step of her career, and that would take forty five hours like they need to skip over the stuff the but on TV you don't have to, but on better call Saul. Obviously, you do a lot of that process stuff. A lot of that revealing the character slowly, but also you do take these leaps. Sometimes you do jump forward in time. How do you decide when something can sort of be set off to the side? We don't need to see that on a win. It's going to be like deeply revealing of character. I think it's especially if we've seen it already move. We've seen something happened already. We try to short handed the second time around if you've if you've experienced it once and we always ask ourselves, how is this time different? You know, of Jimmy is scamming if Jimmy Kimmel scamming. Why are we doing this again? What? What is different here? Why does this move things forward? And hopefully we come up with answers that makes sense to the HUD, but that's that we think about that. We think about that alive. Also, what's interesting to us in what hasn't been done before. When we started the show of inside, we're both really worried about doing the legal show Necas we're not lawyers plus there's so many great legal shows written by people who have law backgrounds and so many wonderful courtroom scenes. And the way we kinda placated ourselves was they will. It's not a law show. It's a crime show, but it's it is a law show to sometime. So one of the things that we try to do is to find the parts of the law that you're not seeing as much of. We, we've all seen a lot of wonderful courtroom summations, but the truth is as we did our big research trip to downtown LA and we, we all sat in court for I sat in court probably a pretty much a week and a lot of the writer's room. We all sat in for a couple of days. I think what you find is that you know most the time in court nothing's happening. It's a lot of the actual transactions happen out of the courtroom or out of sight or backstage, and we wanted to show that part. And so that helps us when we think about process. That's what we think about. And we also think about what does it mean to this? What does it mean to this character? Now the working theory is that something is very, very important to the character, then it can be very, very important to the audience if we dramatize it right. And I think that helps us because it keeps us from chasing stakes. You know this, one of the things that you hear from sometimes notes that people give is one of the. Stakes want steaks, and if you're constantly elevate you raising the stakes, you know you quickly get everything has to be life or death. You know, we have to. It has to be the hero's life or death. Oh, that's not enough. It's gotta be the hero, small family. No, that's not enough. It's going to be the country. It's going to be the world and you keep topping yourself in until it loses humanity loses our ability to really get under the skin of the character. So I'll tell you that's one of the things that gratifies me the most is that I hear more about Kim Wexler really than any of the characters in what she has at stake is not life or death. It's her career that she's worked so damn hard for in his so important to her. And I think it might prove the point because that's an example of operating with stakes that are just very important to the person, but you won't like shootdown that may become has to diffuse a nuclear bomb in season five like that could be a really great. I'm looking, I'm looking well. I'm looking well, you know, we do have a very, I haven't taught. I haven't. We haven't talked about it, but very Connecticut side of the show with a lot of action. And didn't you do wonder what will happen if some of the characters you don't live in that world get involved in that world? Oh, no, no, I. So we're going to head into the spoiler discussion soon. So if you're not wanting to hear that, you know turn this off of five minutes or so. Yeah, I'll I'll give you a clear warning. One of the things that's interesting about this season is you have a lot of characters in your Shoghi. You used some of them very sparingly, and I'm wondering, you know, when it comes to somebody like Howard who doesn't necessarily overlap with everybody all the time or Nacho who doesn't overlap with everybody all the time, how do you sort of decide we're going to work this person in this way? You know, that's what a great quite the truth is that. If we had our way, we'd have a lot more a lot more Howard ham and a lot more Nacho Varga. You know, it's really because we follow the story, the story of of Jimmy and Mike and Kim, you know, into some extent, it is the story of Howard Nacho and certainly Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando are just powerhouse actors and they they can do anything that we can dream up for them, but it's it's, you know, we wanna keep some focus to the show. I think that's one of the reasons why the show works. So it's it's, it's always a balancing act in television. Sometimes you can get into the situation where there's an obligation for whatever reason that we have to have a scene with each character in each episode. So it always becomes sort of a round Robin, and that I think is is just not gonna work for this show the truth. Is that we hope we give. I think you tweeted this. I did. I think you tweeted as wait a minute. We hope we give them good juicy, challenging material that's meaningful to the characters and hopefully actors to into the audience when they do have seen. So it's a balance. It's it's, it's not easy because also the other thing that happens is that you have this great feeling of affection for these actors and you wanna, you know, I always wanting to give give these these actors something great to do in a good reason to be an Albuquerque. Every once in a while, you know, there's, you know, producers will say, can we tell this actor that they won't be needed? You know, for x episode or why episode in it's, it's great for the actor to know that because they, you know, they can take another job or or or do something else with their time. But I hate it like if I had my well, you know, I guess the alternative is to have like ninety five minute episodes. It just doesn't. It just doesn't seem to work for us. Right, right. Typically, we end every episode we're gonna do this in the middle. So people who are to never the spoilers can hear it. We end every episode by asking some of our guests, some of the same questions I'm gonna ask you one of those and then we'll go to the spoiler. So when you finish answering this question, we'll get despoilers and it's a very off the wall question for you. I'm excited to see how you answer it, which is it's the month of Halloween. What is the greatest costume you've ever worn either for Halloween or for some other purpose? Like you were in a stage show in college? I don't know. I am not a costume person, I guess not. I'm trying to remember. I think when I was a kid I was well, I when I was a kid, I was a robot probably my best. My best costume took her. I grew up in Manhattan and so you couldn't really trick or treat at the time. New York is now much more kid friendly at the time that I grew up. It was basically it was madman after that, but it was Manhattan was for was for adults. Kids were barely suffered, so you would go to a friend's apartment and they would maybe making arrangement with a neighbor. So you could. You could go knock on a couple of doors. I took a large box that was an, I drew a robot on it, and and I had a light that blinked that I could push a button, whether it was, I thought it was pretty slick at the. It's amazing. You should take it out and wear it again. Yeah. Support for this podcast on the following message comes from smart water, not satisfied being like other brands. So we're doing the spoilers now we're talking about spoilers tune out if you haven't seen season four and don't want to be spoiled by everybody. I want to start with the very end of the finale which is, you know, Jimmy sang, he's gonna go practice lawn under another name. I wonder what name it could be and you end on Kim, you don't. You don't end on his decision. You end on her standing there, all alone. Sort of like forlorn is the word I wanna use, but maybe that's the wrong word us. Tell me about our finally arriving at that moment of, okay. Here comes Saul Goodman lawyer. I think Kim is for Lauren. I think she's shaken. I think she's. For us. The big moment in maybe the biggest moment in that episode. I don't know. One of the biggest moments is that the scene that comes right before that which is Jimmy statement to the, yes, the bar and he Jimmy gets very emotional. He makes his speech which I find very sincere in real and about his brother in a way that he's never spoken about truck ever. And the board is one of the board members who get teary eyed and Kim, unbeknownst Jimmy, 'cause she's sitting behind him. Kim also gets gets teary eyed. She gives misty eyed and he gets choked up in. He has to has to end the speech, and then she finds out. And I think in that moment, at least for me, Kim feels really close to Jimmy and they've had a lot of trouble lately. There's been. They had an argument in the previous episode that was. Just last rating it was. It was a really tough one. It was one where a lot of things that had gone said, get sad. And in this moment in the bar meeting, I think she feels that he's made maybe some kind of breakthrough or at least that he's back to the Jimmy. She fell in love with and then they leave the bar and he reveals to her that it was an act. This is what he tells her. He says, was all an act. I saw the matrix. I, you know, I made you see that idiot crying. And of course she was crying too. So he he, he deceived the board least this is the way it looks. He deceived the board and he deceived her to. And then she immediately finds out, wait a minute. He's gonna. He's he's calling the clerk Honey. And he's, he's going to do business under another name and it feels like I think to her like he's made some kind of shift that she doesn't quite understand and I almost feel like she's got a premonition and of course, anybody who's watched breaking bad has a premonition too, but I don't think she knows any. I don't think there's anything extra dia jedinak about it, but I think she she feels she has the sense of something big, his changed in him and that was that was a moment that we were working our way up to for quite a while. It didn't become clear to us at that was where we're going until pretty much mid mid season, but the more we talked about it, the more it felt like that was the right moment for him to seem to deal with with his feelings about Chuck. Having said that, I don't know that he's, he says, it's all an act. I, I don't know if I believe him. Yeah, Jimmy has learned to. A us real emotion to his own nefarious ends at which is after all, that's, that's what acting is, isn't it? He's, he's a great actor like he's dry. I think he's drawing on something real Jimmy. Jimmy is. Yeah, I think so too, especially it's so inter. It's so much fun in the episode that we start off in the in act one in the graveyard over Chuck's grave. And he literally says, boo, and he's, he's, I think that seems very funny, very dark and very funny. And Bob is hilarious because he's he's doing a put on of grief, but he seems like he's discovered a new ability inside himself as this as this episode goes on, that's how it looks to me. And boy, I think you gotta hand it to Bob Bob Odenkirk and Ray seahorn and Adam Bernstein who directed the episode. And of course, my my co co-writer Thompson house who just. Just knocked this one out of the park now. Yeah, I gotta say he got me Jim Jimmy. Got me. Like I really thought that was sincere like I was like, I, you know, I know he has to become solid some point, but we got five more years Jimmy, trying to be good failing. Well, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's the other thing that we tried to do is to help you think because there is some real emotion he's having in the episode. He breaks down by himself in the car. Yeah. And so you know, something's going on with this guy and I think his, there's, there's room for argument over over what's going on with Jimmy McGill. This season really established Saul Goodman as a performance in some ways. And I think that's a really interesting direction to take the character. Tell me a little bit about like arriving at that idea of him being performance layered on a real person. I, that's I love a level. You put that. I think that's absolutely true. We. Can't help, but think about this show sometimes in relation to breaking bad and two in breaking bad. So much of what you know Heisenberg was seemed to be Walt feeling like a bad ass. But Saul Goodman is so distant from Jimmy McGill still in some ways that he feels like he must be a character who has devised. And in fact, you know, the first time we meet. So back in breaking bad, he says, you know, the real name's McGill. I just do the Jew thing because all homeboys anyway, visit, he said hall. He has a whole. He has a whole rap about it and you. He's basically saying he's pulling the mask aside and saying, this isn't who I really am. As I was saying earlier, a lot of these things. The answers are often tucked inside episodes and writing that we've already done that. Maybe we haven't looked at carefully enough, right? So it's it's, it is. I think Seoul Goodman is a is a performance. Bob likes to say, Saul Goodman is a ah punk rock choice, which I think has a lot of a liberty to it. This season was really tough because I think for Bob and for us because we made the choice that Jimmy didn't fully understand himself and Jimmy acts out quite a few times in ways that only make real sense if you think will this guy has has things going on underneath the surface that maybe he doesn't fully understand himself. And that was very tricky. That was very tricky because I think it was tough for all of us to understand understand fully what was going on with Jimmy. And I think we hopefully I think I think he got more complicated this season. Billy is what happened. And I think he had to because only complicated person would devise this. Crazy ass character. He becomes, yeah, yeah, we know what happens to Jimmy to some degree. We don't know everything, but we know he ends up Saul Goodman. He goes off and lives in Omaha. Now, presumably, we know what happens to Mike. We know what happens to these characters. The big question hanging over the show is what happens to Kim, and I know you leave room for improvisation, but like do you have in the conversation about like kind of senses of different endings? She could how? Absolutely. We've, we talk about it all the time. I mean, when I say that we it's, it's hard to explain if you're not there because there is. I'd say it's improvised moment to moment which is true some somewhat, but we spend a lot of time talking about, well, what where's what's our end game here has at where does this go? And we have a lot of ideas. But I think the trick is that we're always willing to throw the ideas out and and we're not going to adhere to something just because we had an idea two years ago and we haven't earn. And it or the characters not ready to go there. So it's, you can't lay anything down for sure until you get there. But we definitely have a lot of a lot of very emotional interesting ideas about what's going to happen with Kim, but you know her fate weird thing to say about a fictional character to some extent, her fate is in her own hands. Yeah, I, I had an argument with a friend who's certain that she's gonna just completely destroy her career through the things. She the choices she's making. I was like, no, that's the person that Saul tells Francesca about an episode just know it because there's a flash forward. In that episode, the Mike corner of the show is it's not catching up to breaking bad. You still like four years. I think in the timeline before breaking bad starts, but it is like putting things in place for breaking bad more overtly than I think the Jimmy corner of the show is told me about approaching writing that and how you sort of decided where to end it in the finale with the the final. It feels weird to call the showdown, but the final showdown with Verner. Yeah. We started the show. With a question, I don't think we knew exactly how we were stating it, but the very first episode of better call Saul states a two pronged question one is how does this guy who's Jimmy McGill become Saul Goodman? But it also the question is why for so as banker, trout in a booth? Yeah, parking booth. But then as the season goes on, you start understanding who might Mike is and why he's in Albuquerque and what he's what he's all about. How does that guy become the right hand band to a drug Lord? And how does he become gust Frings button? Men. It's an, it's not as extreme as Jimmy because he doesn't put out a new identity in a new voice in a new way of speaking in moving. But he in a completely different world, but he is a former cop who has we know he has killed for for revenge. And we know he was, he's been war and we know he's, he's taken money. He's been on the take, but he still has a moral code. He still sees the results of his actions pretty damn clearly and takes responsibility for them, which is unusual in this world and on this show. So how does he end up working with christova ring and what this friend need him for and how does that work? And that is what like with Jimmy side of the story. That is the problem. Um, we've set out for ourselves and this season we found out the seemed to have a rejection. He seemed to feel that he couldn't lead. A civilian life in some ways. And he, he ends up working with gusts, but what he's doing with for us is suited to his unique talents because this is a guy who is brilliant at deception and detection, and he's not just a hired killer. Gus has plenty of hired killers, and so the question became, you know, we're still we're still trying to figure this out this question, but he makes a decisive move. It is season because he does. He does kill this guy. Werner Ziegler who is not blameless his like they say, he's in the game, but he is a for all that he's a fairly decent guy in somebody Mike likes, and yet the situation. And I think if you asked Mike, he would say Mike was that he created the situation at his Mike's fault. Mike takes responsibility for the situation and in. In some ways, it's almost mercy killing because he is by killing Werner. He saving Werner's the life of Warner's spouse so it it takes a decisive step forward. And you know, we had a lot of fun with the the super lab and with. I, I, I'm fascinated by how you could possibly build him structure like this. I mean, you're this in may. I may be a lunatic, but I'm fascinated by things like that when I was a kid, I would watch the JAMES BOND movies and you'd see, oh yeah, it was amazing. Ken Adam sets and you say, we'll, how did how did how did lowveld hollow out of all kaneohe and we're all those guys who are working there. And I, I wanted to know how that happened, and that's one of the things that were exploring. I, I once worked at a newspaper job in the town where they're carving the Crazy Horse national monument which is in mountain. They're blowing up to make it like mount Rushmore. And like I just was fascinated with like that whole process and like, could you build a house inside if you really want I get, I get where you're coming from a love. It Lolo kind of comes in. The last few episodes is really establish his presence to see him as a really important force going forward in the show while it Lalla play by Tony, Dalton, these amazing how just he comes in like. Hurricane, and he seems that boy, Tony has such chemistry with Michael Mando and he has such chemistry with with with all anybody anybody encounters. I think I think he's gonna play a significant role on how this works out. And of course, when we first met saw Goodman way back in breaking bad, he was terrified of somebody named Lalo and now we've met him in, I think you see why he'd be terrified of him. So one of the things that I I'm hoping for I'm hoping we can achieve is that his path is going to cross with that of Saul Goodman. How do you think about using gusts? Because I always want more gusts and I realize you don't want to like kill that characters. The characters vibe is kind of mysterious, but like I especially want more gusts hanging out with Mike, you know, that sort of thing. So how do you think about approaching? We got this character. There's a lot of mystery. Around him. We want to preserve some of it, but we want also use him. You know, I couldn't agree. I love Giancarlo Esposito you know, you just watch this guy who couldn't be more different from his character. It's it's kinda miraculously to see how lively and funny in human insensitive Giancarlo is he is a real artist and then to see him become Gus fring in the blink of an eye is it's sort of a magic trick. He is. He is a remarkable actor. It's a great character. We you, you put your finger on. One thing that we always think about is how much do you wanna know about gusts background in his inner life, and we've had we've a lot of ideas about that and there have been hints throughout the show. But the question is to you, you know is exciting. Is that the right thing to do to fill in all those hints in I, I don't know the answer. It's one of those things that we play by ear. We learn more about him. This season. We learned more about how important actress. To him in the things he's willing to do to keep Hector under his thumb. And we learned, you know, tell us that that great story in an episode, six Jenny Hodgson road about, you know about his childhood, which sounds pretty bleak. He is a fascinating actor. I wanna see more of him. You know, it's an embarrassment of riches on this show. It's an embarrassment of riches of characters a performers he is. But I, I will say, John Carlos one of my favorites, and I just love working with the frankly when I'm directing, he's I just love directing him so much fun to work with on the set. So I, I'm all I can say is I think I'm going to direct this coming season. I'm sure hoping it works out. I get a bunch of Gus fring scenes. Maybe he drives across town. There's like a house. He goes in the house. We never seen the house before. There's a live studio audience in there and like six precocious orphans, and it turns out he's also like the dad and a multi. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. We writing. This. I, I do want to ask where it we're coming into the end here, but I do want to ask breaking bad, ran five seasons. You're coming up on season five. Do you have a sense of, obviously you could just run the show forever as as you know, salt takes case of the week, be I, I would watch it. I would watch it, but do you have a sense of like we're bless you? We are approaching some sort of end game. I, yeah, I think it's the similarity with breaking bad, I think is that this is a story with a beginning, middle and an end. And I think we're probably closer to the end into the beginning. It's a different kind of story because I always go back to that saying, I heard when I was a kid which where there's life, there's hope, and we know that Jimmy Saul gene lives. And so I, I wanna know you know, what is the end of this man story? And I don't know. I don't think the end of the story is Walter white walking in and his whole world falling apart. There seems to be more. To it than that. So I, I think we'll we'll have to see. I'd like to see more gene tack. Also, I'll tell you that and you know, of course, breaking bad ran, what sixty? Two episodes. We just we just premiered our fortieth. It would be great. I mean, boy, it would be wonderful to have this box set in, you know, you turn it one way and I'm just talking about like a Blu Ray. You turn it one way and it's the RV from breaking bad, and then you flip it around and it's the esteem, it's Jimmy's esteem from better call Saul. And you know, we have, we have this row. This is actually an image play. I, you know, I just realized where I more I had this image before I had this image. Brian. I Bryan Cranston I were in in his trailer wants, and I said, wouldn't it be great if we can finish this story and you can have a row of DVD's and you know the first one was the the, the pilot of breaking bad. In the end. We did it and Vincent Brian. All of us did it together, but led by. Vince course it would be wonderful if this show too had a beginning, a middle and God willing satisfying ending, and that it has a relationship to this other show. It seems very unusual to me is the, I guess, maybe it's not as unusual as I think because people talk about extended universes, but I don't really think of this as an extended universe. I think of this these stories about very specific characters. I don't really think of it as a universe. Maybe it is. I think it'd be fun. I think that'd be great. So I mean, my hope would be that we run roughly the same length is breaking bad. I wouldn't want the one thing I don't wouldn't want to do is to tread water or to to feel that we've overstayed our welcome churn. And finally a interview invents before season one, I went back and reread it and I asked you. So I sort of had thought of breaking bad as show about a man. Everybody assumed was good, who deep down was not that good. And I sort of thought about this. Show for a long time as a man. Everybody assumed was bad, who deep down was not that bad. You know, he had a really good side to him now that we're at the end of season for now that we've seen all this water under the bridge. Would you say that because at the time you thought my assessment was was pretty accurate, but would you say that's still accurate? IRS has says, all of is Jimmy sort of selling himself out in some ways. You know, I think any everybody has potential to go any which way I think it may be. It's mechanistic way of looking at things, but I think of decisions, the choices people make. It's the the difference you make in the world that says, whether you're good or bad. I mean, I know there are other ways to look at it. There are other ways their religious ways say that you know what's good or bad is how you feel inside or relationship to to the terminal, and those are obviously legitimate ways. But as a dramatist it's that's too pretending and as as a television writer, I liked. Think of it as the decisions that people make and you add up the decisions and that's who you are. And that's a very uncomfortable way to look at it sometimes because it means that we have to stand behind the things that we've done in life or the things that we haven't done. But I, I have to say, I think it's a, I think it's a productive way to think about it. And it's also part of the fun of part of the fun of fiction and of narrative fiction is you get experienced different kinds of lives and you kind of imagine what would my life be like if I had made these decisions or if I was in this person's shoes and it's, I think that's the, you know, it's the glory of being human as you can. You can project yourself into someone else, and so that's that's those are the things that I think about more than is the essence of the person good or bad. If Walter white had made the decision to stop cooking meth. After that, I adventure when he made all that money, maybe you'd say, well, was he a good? You know, he might have been a much better person. He had a lot of opportunities to change his ways. So I, you know, I think a lot in terms of, I think we all do in the riders from thinking a lot in terms of character tests, which is, you know, you always hope that you don't have too many of those in your life because you you don't wanna flunk them. Well, the show is better call Saul. It's on AMC. Older seasons are on Netflix, if you're not watching it and you should be Peter cold. Thank you for trying all thank you. Talk.
