Money news at 25 and 55, here's Tom busby. This is a Bloomberg money minute. Everyone wants to buy an electric engine car until they find out how much they cost an average of $66,000. Price is everything. And a lot of people want to talk about things like safety and styling and fuel efficiency and kindness to other earth. And those things all play into people's purchase decisions after price. That's Carl brower. Executive editor at IC cars, the online auto marketplace. He says there's a good reason for the high cost. When you have lithium and nickel and palladium and all these materials that go into electric car batteries going up in price over the past year, like they have, you have to follow suit by raising the retail price of the vehicle. But this may help, the Treasury Department now considering expanding the $7500 EV tax credit in the inflation reduction act to cars made outside the U.S., volvos, Mercedes, Nissan's Hyundai's, which could give overall sales in the U.S. a big boost. I've done a bunch of reorganizations where you can confirm a plan of reorganization and under that plan, you restructure the debt, you try to maximize the efficiency of the company, but after you go through a confirmation process, you then emerge as a reorganized debtor and a lot of other companies have gone on to be successful. "We're speaking about prions and the relationship to chronic wasting disease. We're speaking with doctor Sandra pritzker, she's an assistant professor at the mcgovern medical school at the University of Texas health in Houston. And we're speaking about chronic wasting disease, which I think that if this thing was really zoonotic and jumping to humans, that we would see it more prevalent in places where people were hunting deer. It would seem like you'd have sound epidemiological evidence of this. So deer hunting is a huge sport through most of the country. So do we actually see any evidence of this from epidemiological studies? Yes, I have been reported that there's a high prevalence of prion disease in areas where handbags are present. But there's no real evidence that this is really caused by, for example chronic basin disease. So it can be just a coincidence. But up to date, there is no proof that hunters got infected with chronic basin disease. Okay, but what about the animals themselves? Are we seeing more and more spread of this disease among deer and other types of animals? Because it seems to me over the last 20, 30 years that this is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in spreading. Yes, it has been spreading extremely. It's growing and growing. Before maybe 20 years ago, it was just in like a small area of the United States and now you can find it in half of the states of the United States. What about Europe and other places in Asia? Yes. You're absolutely correct. We also are also reported some cases in Europe in Norway, but I think also in Sweden and Korea. Can we learn anything from allelic variation like different versions that maybe have a higher propensity for conversion to the pathological form from the cellular form? So what there are investigators there are evidences that there are also different strains of chronic wasting disease, which do have a different there may be more infectious or they're actually able to. Transmit to other species, and then become LEGO zonal potential. Well, what is exactly being done to eradicate chronic wasting.

"And so is that the correct interpretation? Yeah, transmitted by means that, yes, transmissible means that it can, yes, change the conformation of the cellular protein. So to become a misfolded version, that's correct. Well, I should have asked this earlier, but what does the normal cellular prion protein do? You know, what's its role? It's role can't be to be a target for misfolding to cause some sort of weird disease. Actually, the real function of the prion protein, however there have been some functional proposed, for example, that it may be play a role in the violation of the.

"Meat. So yeah, so there are three possible routes of transmission. One is like vertical from the mother to the offspring. Another possible route is horizontal from any mayor to any man, maybe during a mating season. Or mating. And I think the probably most common, in my opinion, transmission route is through the environment. So in fact, the deer sheds prion continuously through saliva, feces, but also Caravaggio of diseased animals. Release pre and Susan environment. And we know that efficiently bind to soil and other environmental components and get accumulated. They can also get acclimated and plants, and then non infected years, like our exposed to these environment, infected environment, and maybe also eat these plants, and then they get infected. Well, this is a freaky new one on me because I always thought as long as you didn't eat brains and spinal cords you were safe from a prion based disease. But what you're telling me is that this stuff is released in urine and cadaver breakdown, whatever, and actually accumulates in the environment and can be a threat to propagating prion disease. Yes. I thought we have shown. It depends on the pre end disease. Some prion diseases are more based in the brain, but other prion diseases as chronic basin disease are also very present in the periphery. So therefore, we find that in urine and saliva and all bodily fluids. This is really shocking because it always seemed to me that this couldn't happen. So you're telling me that if you have the right test that you can go out, like the right sensitive enough test that you could go out and survey soil or survey plants and find the converted pathological form of the preempt protein in the environment, yes, I'm like, we have shown that although we have experimentally exposed environmental surfaces with prions and then we show them you can test them for it with the sensitive amplification technique. That's really scary because these diseases can be kind of difficult to spot. I mean, chronic wasting in its full form has some symptoms. But prion diseases by characteristic tend to have very long latency periods. So is this also the case with chronic wasting disease and how it's affecting these.

"However, this is concerned that any matrix diseases can be transmitted to humans. So like in the case of BSE, being transmitted to humans and forming the new variant of criteria disease. Yes, most people remember this from the 80s. So BSC is bovine spongiform and which was the Cal version of a prion related disease that then could be transmitted to humans and cause a number of different pathologies. So you mentioned the variants of creutzfeldt Jakob disease, but there's also other things like fatal familial insomnia and other types of diseases, neurological diseases, is that correct? Yes. The BSE spongiform bovine spongiform disease and cow. It was transmitted to M two humans and caused a new random prototype. But yes, you are correct. There are other forms of prion diseases in humans. It's like the familiar. These are more electronic versions, but they're also some prion diseases course actually by cannibalism. This is cool. Yeah, kuru is kind of the cool one. It was ritualistic cannibalism that for a really was where these Korean related diseases were first identified and be shown to be connected to consumption of neurological tissue. And so this was a really interesting story. Do you want to spend a second and maybe drill down on that just a little bit more? Yes, it was mostly in kids and also in women because they were eating the brain as it goes back to a ritual when one of the relatives dies. So that the person can continue living. There are eating the brain. And the women mostly preparing the food so by preparing maybe they had some injuries in the hands so that these government transmitted and also, yeah, they were eating the brain. Yeah, so consumption of the brain, it's kind of a strange metaphor for the disease itself because it spreads by others who are consuming the prion, which is converted..

"I'm happy to talk to you today. Yeah, I'm happy to talk to you too. Prions have been a kind of a hobby for a long time. It's a topic that I really am interested in because there are very unusual type of pathology or infectious agent. So if you catch a virus, you're catching a virus from the environment or from somebody else. A prion is a molecule or a protein within our cells. And we already make this protein as part of our central nervous system. And the problem is, is that it changes to become pathological. And I'll let you take it from there. But let's start out with this idea of, what exactly is a prion? Okay, like a prion is an infectious agent of prion disease. It is a misfolded version of cellular protein. We all have called the prion protein. So the term prion goes back to staying a prisoner. And refers to a protein being the solely infectious agent. Okay, so this is an infectious agent that causes a number of devastating diseases in humans and other animals. But it's something that comes from within, right? I mean, this is a cellular protein that's normally present in a number of different cells in the body. And when it converts because of either some sort of environmental or other type of genetic situation, becomes a basis of pathology, is that correct? Like.

"Is i agree. Like i think i probably have a tendency to walk too fast. Push my dogs through a lot of cover. Probably walk by birds that you know had gone slower. Given the dogs time to sort things out And like you said when you're by yourself that's easier to do mike. My little pup rose. She is displaying like an ability to like. I'll really give her a lot of time because she just had shows an ability to kind of sort this out and like it's almost like a bird materializes just because i gave her the time to work it out whereas you know like my sometimes my desire to explore and get around the next corner like pushing them through that stuff but i by watch rose come to a couple of times out there and i'm like oh there's gotta be a birth. I mean she. She's locked up tight. And then she relocate a little bit locked backup and finally with one of those last woodcock she got in. There is exactly what i was watching happened happened again. And then the woodcock got up was just the way it supposed to work. Yeah and there were a couple spots in there. Where in this is you know again. We've talked about something new for me and it was fun to stop on a hillside or you know heading up a hill until watch her kinda swing far to the right and then come back left and then all of a sudden you know wheel around and then come around the other side and and you know i in some cases that meant we were working something. In other cases she was working sent. But it's cool that that promise that you have in that moment yes. Yeah that's like even if there's not a bird in the air and like if you get a ton of unproductive points she's pointing and nothing happens like you can get. That can get frustrating. I guess maybe a word to put it. But it's no less thrilling. Like uc that doggone point you're like even if you don't put up a bird like you've had you've had some excitement going on there rose in particular. She's a young dog. Take year or two to learn that she can't put that much pressure on a bird. Yup and that it's going to you. Know flush relocate and it it just takes time. I mean watching the difference between harley work in her work today was totally watching a dog on its way up and experienced dog. That knew exactly what was going on. Both both are exciting amazing to watch. Yeah hardly seemed like he could stay on point for an infinite amount of time whereas you know rose was if the bellwood stop and your ways off. I'm thinking you know she just gonna wanna move again right right. Yeah because nothing's happening and we're we're not moving quick enough. Yep yeah i would. I would agree with your with your assessment and i would say you know both of them being my dogs like if they rose moving a lot today it seemed like in you know she was getting hot. She was looking for us timer to. I think she was working. She was working sent at different times. But we didn't put up a lot of birds in in a lot of those places so it wasn't like you would say she bumped that bird. She messed up or anything. The bird wasn't there or whatever it was but both of them. If they're like when we got back to the truck actually was kind of joking because unlike this is tied to get rose back and sure enough. I unlocked the truck. And we're kind of standing here and all of a sudden she's gone and i knew she was gone and then i my watch vibrating. And she was one hundred ninety yards away on point and i. My gun was unloaded and loaded the gun backup and i hiked out there. One hundred ninety yards. I founder went around or kind of took a roundabout way to her and walked in and there was a woodcock under knows for about five minutes and mckay. She had it. She stuck it flushed. It and i was fortunate to kill that one. Yeah i think the woodcock probably really good learning opportunity for 'cause they're gonna hold tight they're gonna hold right under knows typically out and she's she's still got to grow into that backing off the pressure on grouse. I mean i. I've a friend that had settled moved. Kind of the same thing happened early. When they're young. just yeah. They are Very driven dogs. They haunt with amazing speed but it also if you watch them. They're pretty efficient. Yeah and so but they're covering a lot of ground. yeah and i think that When they're young they can just get a little too much pressure on birds. Yup that's a feeling process. And that's a that's an i've seen i've seen rose do it right a lot and i've but out here today she she won on point. We weren't that far into our walk. She went on point and we heard the bell circle again. And then we heard two grouse get up. You know so pressured those and you. You're hoping as trainer and handler that that was a learning learning moment for her. But that's that's part of hunting hunting with bird dogs at least when it all comes together. It's very very exciting. Why don't you know honestly we wouldn't have to shot at those nerds either way exactly. It's nice to know they're they're you know and again when i'm cut my dogs loose that we're contacting birds and yes. I have a desire to get them. Pointed in milwaukee in and shoot them and stuff but knowing that you're getting girls contacts and stuff that's that's what we're out here to do for sure and it's been a great day of it. Yes little warm. I think it's actually a little high cloud cover like i'm wondering like i am. I feeling like have we just been sitting here. We ate a sandwich. Are we cooled off. If we start walking again. Is it going to get hot but we are getting to that time of year. It's three thirty now. The son plays out. Its course a little bit quicker in the evenings get a little bit cooler or getting to the point where the dogs are well rested and we've got a high patches sears clouds working in two so that will provide a little more shades because that could do some good for us. I don't know how the birdsville about it. But i feel good. We're important too because we were getting really hot earlier. And i think we got maybe hundred yards from the truck and we were all thinking. Oh man this is. This is hotter than. I'm used to this time of year. We were ready to emerge from the brush. Yeah well matt we. A- we need to talk minnesota. Vha whatever sure what's called bird podcast but cwc's rearing its ugly head again in the state chronic wasting disease and the deer population Testified to House committee and informal committee. I guess it was back in september We had a deer farm tests positive up near bemidji really and they were disposing carcasses on public land. Oh excellent tax forfeit public land. So land has been at the expense of the dnr of a little under two hundred thousand dollars. Twelve acres of public land has been fenced off And listening to dr larson of the university of minnesota's I can't remember which department he's with. But i think it's Ulcer homestead rap group The prion that it's a prion disease got malformed protein. Yeah and so it survives. It'll sit in the soil forever right. i mean it. They've they've got a new arctic. Quick test they've come up with and They're the they've tested and they'll find it in the soil. They can find it. Implants they can find. It's it's kind of a scary thing that we really need to address so we came out with a stance in support of The minnesota deer hunters association Put out a letter to the tribune that was published Basically saying we want to shutdown. Serve it farms in the state of minnesota I think saint louis coney justice read. Yes yesterday passed a moratorium on saint louis county. It's real on it. Absolutely the i don't know if they had any kind of they might have one or two but so the moratoriums one of the things we've asked where that we stop adding new farms Board of animal health and the minister. "Cw d- You just don't know what dear might have it We do a lot of testing ourselves on deer that are located along the roadways. I get hit by vehicles Matab an extra pair eyes and ears out there you know. Oh hey. I saw a deer today in this area. You know this is where he could go. Get a sample know that that would tremendously help us figure out you know if we have a further spread you know. Hopefully this is just something where it's it's more isolated and we have to deer that test positive and we go the next two three years and don't get any more But if we do have a hot spot we want to locate it and be able to determine you know what needs to be done in that area at this point if you don't see any more cases of cw wd during this hunting season or and the next year or so. How soon until you know your your focus on that goes goes down or goes away or will you continue to focus on it because of so. We'll never quit. Focusing on chronic wasting disease But as far as this specific dear surveillance area The way it's written into the law is that A minimum of three years. Once you declare it you know. It's a three year minimum for that additional disease surveillance areas so you can probably expect it to be the next two three years of the surveillance area here and then obviously if if we're testing in this area and another one pops up you know the disease surveillance area moves you know with with what we're finding So just because you're township might be just out of the range today you know we might find find another one midseason that. Is you know in the southern end. Marion county or something. Like that and increases that zone you know even further hopefully not the case but it could be well if somebody does harvest a deer in southern or actually to coley. Go off of it talk about maybe the southeast corner of marion county. They're going to get that processed and everything like that. Are they still going to look for that. I mean even though they're not in the in the zone while the processor looked for that or anything so not every deer that gets harvested. Like if you're not inside the zone Unfortunately testings not free into do these. You can get him tested. Through department agriculture there is a process where you can pay to have them processed But that's up to the individual whether they wanna get a process or check through that process or not also we do have like if you harvested you. That goes to a taxidermist. We have taxidermist that are collecting samples for our quotas To make sure that we have enough tested That no matter which county you fall in if you take it to a taxidermist. There's potential that they would be testing. You know that animal as well contacts or any process now if somebody does harvest a deer inside Their surveillance area And they wanna obviously have that in. Eat that There's really no problem with abbot. You need to go through the processes correct. Yes so There are some There is rule into that prohibits the removal of a carcass from the disease surveillance area With some exceptions So like say. I'm in in marion. County and i harvested era the big island wildlife area that falls within inside the disease surveillance area But i live down in green camp. And i wanna take that deer home So to take the deer out of the disease surveillance area within twenty four hours at either needs to go to certify taxidermist or certified processor or you have to butcher within the area of the disease surveillance area and not bring out those high risk parts that could potentially have the disease There are some certifications available for processors..

"Wildlife area headquarters the killed. Your planes had quarters for the wyandotte county fairgrounds. All those locations will have individuals staffing Those to take samples For your dear harvest but those times If you harvested you're outside of those times i'm but still during the season There will be a kiosk available from october. First through january eleventh Where you'll actually be able to bring your sample portion of the deer to that kiosk. Fill out some information On a piece of paper That's provided and get a number. That is a special to your deer And you'll be to actually check that deer online to see you know if it was positive or not right for cd and that sample portion is the lymph nodes correct correct Though the the portion that an individual would provide to the kiosk. We're not asking you to take each lymph node out of the deer But the head of the deer is what we're looking for and then obviously if you harvest a trophy animal that you wanna get mounted There some other options as well We have local taxes ernest That can take samples as well For that we would just wanna know you harvest a deer inside that area and where you're taking it. Okay so we can get a sample from it. I get that so make sure that That you're doing that so for folks that are listening listening in that aren't hunters and they think to themselves. Why why do. I need to be concerned. Or why do i need to know about chronic wasting disease. Cw wise important to me because you need to know what's going on for one thing. Correct correct Yes so even. If you don't hunt you can be affected by this I know a lot of people that aren't aren't big hunters but they like to feed the wildlife whether it's to throw some seat out for the birds and squirrels and whatnot And they have deer coming into their backyard..

Concerns growing over Chronic Wasting Disease
"Joining us on this statement today is wildlife veterinary and Charlie bouncing and Charlie were talking chronic wasting disease this week. What's your department doing to address chronic wasting disease? Well, yeah. Chronically disease is tough. Because once it's here, it's here forever. So really in order to address it you try to do everything you can to lower the risk of it spreading from one animal to the next within an area, and then prevent it from being introduced to new areas we've had it in three two for about a decade. We now know that it's in the northwest. And so we're going to follow the example of three f two in instituting, some transportation and bathing restrictions up in the north west. In addition to that will continue to do surveillance just monitor how big of a problem, we have there in you know, if it's increasing or staying steady we hope that we can keep it under control and maintain a low prevalence. I mean, that's what will continue to watch moving
