Former Congresswoman Katie Hill Does a Postmortem on a Lost Congressional Seat
"When the news is bad? I know that it is tempting for me to tune out but I also know that sometimes examining bad news and figuring out how to learn from it is a good thing so with that semester. Monaco and I are starting this week. Show with the conversation with former California Representative Katie Hill. Katie resigned from her seat last October and in a special election last week a Republican one bomber. So where do we go from here? Let's ask Katie are welcome Katie Hill. Welcome back to hysteria. We're so happy to have you back. Glad to be back. Thank you first of all. How are you doing man That's like a loaded question. I feel like I'm you know I'm I'm okay. The results the election were pretty horrible. You know in a way it was of what we were expecting. But you obviously didn't ever want and at you know it's just like one thing on top another in life in in figuring a way to get up in Russia yourself off in new forward was I was again when I was a kid. Reverses a still own a horse and the biggest thing that you were taught was being you fall off you get back up and get right back on and that's just kind of against what length is so drilling down into that trauma? A little bit last week was was the special election in California's twenty fifth for everyone listening. What happens and were you surprised when you say what happened do you mean why did we lose or yeah yeah why Jillette. Why did why did why did she was. Yeah well I think the biggest chapter honestly is just people in a special election. Democrats don't show up and you've got the rented. Republican base. That was particularly riled up because of my scandal and excited the opportunity to take a seat back. I mean that was that was literally what they were plotting. They were trying to you. Know to find something they. They found something. They exploited it. They got me to resign and this officers their opportunity to take back. The seat they felt was stolen from them in the first place remember. It hadn't been held by a Republican ever in its current form and they really did not think that it's possible for someone like me. Let alone any Democrats there So I think that they really rallied around this opportunity and from what we know they actually did some very despite the fact that you hear them complain all the time about ballot harvesting. They had some very organized efforts around ballot sting and Them for figuring it out. Because like you know that's to me it's about helping people be a but the churches were really mobilized in getting people to providing drop off centers. And saying that they're gonNA mail to use of swing by the church in you know do it in your car or whatever and we just didn't have something like baton. I think you can also partly attributed to the fact that Democrats were pretty disenchanted by things right. Like you're GONNA be really really frustrated works so barred and felt like you were. Finally I heard over a felt like you were finally represented and have all go away. So quickly is is really disenchanting. Should okay so there was a special election in California's twenty fifth special action in Wisconsin. Seventh both know that these are anecdotal elections in every district is different but you can still kind of extrapolate things on a maybe on a larger scale from this like. Do you think that Democrats should see what happened in your former seat special election as a wakeup call I do. I think that it shows that you remember mine was one of the Houghton quote safest swing seats right. Hillary Clinton when by seven. I want by nine. This isn't one of the seats that should have at risk. So what it means is that you know. Depending on what things are looking like November especially depending on the energy that's coming from rate than district's length. The ones that we flicked that were that were ones that that trump won by sixteen points are really really wants. We need to watch out for so we should give up or stop paying attention to the house just because the Senate is looking like it's within reach or obviously presidency so that to me. The biggest of all first and foremost the second is that as we are adapting to this Nalen strategy. How we doing that right? Field is what has been our strongest most important. Get out the vote effort right and that's modified I don't take. You should give up on it all together. I think they're Balkans Altogether they have they have a different base of people who they can go soo and again reliably that will reliably answer their phones that they can you get to things like drop off ballots churches. But we're GONNA have to modify field programs to to frankly make sure people know how vote by mail. When they have many many of them have never done it before especially in these lower turnout areas of to begin with which are usually the most. Democrats held Katie. Beyond even just in. How do we re engage the Democrats that helped you win by nine points when now they're also facing the pandemic childcare challenges on employment and things that are just like so catastrophic question? I think I am hopeful that the loss actually was a wakeup call for a lot of people might have thought like while the seat will be fine. Now they're like okay. I have really have to bow part of I mean honestly. I think that the the district itself is democratic leaning enough now that if we get to turn out that you know is usually expected in November election. I think she will win. And we saw we saw it happened with the ossoff special in Lucy. Macbeth one in general. I think we're GONNA see that in this case but it still. You know it's something that can't be taken for granted in terms of the support that I had the volunteers mobilized rabbit. I think that's that's going to be the same thing right is how do you figure out ways of ways of getting involved? That may not mean. Move leaving your house And how do we get people excited about it? Especially when the Senate is in play in California and the The obviously dilatory votes are going to be there for Joe Biden. No matter what so. I think I think it has to be like maybe you know maybe the Gee let's get so excited about meeting the seat back because like that. That as it's more like Oh you fuckers. Hello and stand up and what's ours okay. You said the word motherfuckers. Let's expand on that a little bit because we we chatted briefly about this About this race and how it personal it was to you and how personal it was considering the person who ended up winning the seat. Can you talk a little bit about the people who helped promote Christy Smith opponent short so the first person the first slew of images that came out was through the publicly came out was through red? Sti His enemies are images of You. That were released without your consent without taking taken without your consent. Got It and the only person that could have done. That was my accent. Spin obvious denied it. And so it's a it. So that started at Red State. The person who published those who who was the investigative reporter has been a longtime Republican operatives in the region who writes I guess on side. Honestly don't really know what I know that writing as is not a full-time thing for her and she had worked for one of my previous owners. She worked for Steve Night in the past and the day after the day. After I resigned she endorsement ARSIA There were a number of other people who were involved and again. This is information as circling through like facebook groups and drew a the random people that are on the ground in. It's not it's not like a niffer court case starting to like that bitch so many of the people who were supporting my sem from the beginning. We're the ones that need new. Had the photos and some of that is actually on logs. There's still posted out there. A Joe Messina. And things like that so I think For me that that was the biggest thing right like it was misleading. That my favorite before all of this came

"Welcome back to your money matters I meant Kennedy is joined now by Christy Smith and one of the things Christy about spring cleaning is he got a room you gotta dig deep roll up the sleeves and really put some elbow grease into it and when it comes to your financial matters of state planning that can be a lot of work because a lot of you think I don't need a state planning estate planning is for rich people no estate planning is for everybody and there are four really critical things that you need to consider when it comes to a state planning so we're gonna dive into that here in just a moment look first though a little house cleaning of our own over the last three weeks we've had a problem unawares to us with our phone number so if you've tried to call are eight six six three nine oh one two five two number eight six six three nine oh one two five two many of you may have had a a failed call or drop the call turns out it was a problem with our phone system I guess cobit infected the phone system bottom line is if you've tried to call us over the last two or three weeks and weren't able to get through the problem has been rectified so if you can remember what you were wanting to ask is from a few weeks ago so for the call you will get the answering service this time so if you were planning to call a couple weeks ago in the call wouldn't go through kindly try again please eight six six three nine zero one two five two that's eight six six three nine zero one two five two so Christy when it comes to spring cleaning I know that when Alyssa my wife says to me spring cleaning I want to pick the easy jobs and she wants to give me the hard jobs like taking the screens off the windows and all the stuff that involves ladders and when it comes to your financial matters the easy stuff might be what we'll go look at our budget or rebalance our portfolio but for most people the hard part is a state planning what why are people so terrified of those two words a state planning well I don't know if it's necessarily that they're terrified I think one of the biggest problems that people really don't understand is that he everyone can truly does need some form of estate planning and it's in a somewhat of a misconception in my opinion because people really believe that unless they're wealthy they don't really need estate planning true but we've seen situations where I've you know a husband and wife have not done any estate planning and more one of one passes away and in in this situation that I'm talking about this particular client had inherited some some stock and you know they were counting on that stock it leaves the dividends to live on it I in retirement then all the sudden you know one of them realize they no longer have that money to rely on in retirement but with proper estate planning which can be very simple it can be as simple as a last will and testament it can be a power of attorney for medical a power of attorney for financial and and maybe even a live and well the these things don't have to be a you know Blake dreadful to do well I think what trips people up to is the terminology so let's take that high level five dollar word terminology and just boil it down to simple English and I think that's going to help a lot of you Christy and I are both certified state planners now we're not attorneys and we can't draw up a will or a trust for you but we have taken the courses to understand the terminology and to be able to determine what your needs may be is part of your overall financial plan we do work with a local attorney who can actually do the paperwork and get to know your situation detail so again if you need this help our number which is working now is eight six six three nine zero one two five two so when it comes to a state planning was throughout some fancy words define them and talk about what they mean we feel like there are four critical things as part of your estate planning spring cleaning you have to take care of number one everybody needs a will in this state where we have a community property situation in fancy words like use a frock which determine who gets the fruits and the use of the proceeds of see how confusing it can be everybody needs a will rich or poor right Christy yeah I think everybody needs a last will and testament but alongside a last will and testament just because I know you're going to talk about some other legal documents yeah I would say is actually important to go back and revisit all of your beneficiary designation correct so if you got a four oh one K. check out the beneficiary designations if you've got a pension check the beneficiary designations and let me add some people what the first thing they'll say is okay so I've got my four oh one K. animal will I'm gonna put that I'll leave my four oh one K. to my wife no if it's money that you've never been taxed on a four oh one K. and IRA a set up a simple a four fifty seven plant if it's a plan that you are deferring taxes on a qualified plan it's going to have beneficiary arrangements it doesn't have to be in your will but be very careful that you set up the beneficiaries correctly well here's what we see all the time right Christy up husband and wife get married they don't have kids they name each other their primary beneficiary twenty years later there kids are already eighteen years old and guess what no contingent beneficiaries so primary means for example Matt has an IRA Alyssa my wife is my primary beneficiary something happens to me money goes to her but what is not in the list of die together in a car wreck our contingent beneficiaries our our two children Ryan and Lauren but what if there weren't contingent beneficiaries what would happen Christie well if there's not contingent beneficiaries then the account that would have avoided secession is now going to be forced into secession through the court system what is Cisco somebody listings as well what is succession what is that what's the legal process of getting your assets we title to the to the correct person that's entitled to enter people and are entitled to it but it is a legal process and cost money to do it I was gonna say you want to avoid that like a root canal or a speeding ticket because succession eight can be very costly it can drag on for months I've seen successions that I've taken two years so make your life simple make sure your beneficiaries are correct we've also seen situations where someone got married they name their wife is their beneficiary they got divorced for five years later they came to meet with us and said oh no as Susan was the woman I was married to before Mary's my new wife and we'll say well why do you still have your first wife's name is the beneficiary of your four oh one K. people make a lot of a lot of time so even say well because we did a wheel and I name tonight we'll point you know my my current wife and they think that that is gonna know stand but it's not a beneficiary designation is going to override will that the thing is is that right now we're all going through all these very uncertain times and I gotta tell you for me estate planning becomes even more important when you experience the scare I hate to use that word but it's true of the young unknown health wise and I think I think the coronavirus has put us in a position where we have to rethink things and I think getting your estate planning is extremely important not only that I think it's important that you choose to work with a financial advisory firm that can help you not only coordinate your income plan your asset plan your healthcare plan but also your estate plan and your tax plan and that's what we do at Presley wealth management and so we if you have questions about estate planning you don't have to you know move your retirement accounts to us for your investment accounts if you have some simple questions that you would like answered I'm give us a call we'd love to help you our phone number is eight six six three nine zero twelve fifty two I promise they're gonna answer today yeah eight six six three nine zero twelve fifty two so how will this is important for everyone a living will people here that terminology the living will basically says how do I want to be treated at the end of my life yeah it's it's more you know to me it's a gift your family because it it takes that decision making process away from your family I'm if something should happen to you and I think we like when I think about a living will always go back to that hi Terry shar row I think is very shy though yeah right and her husband and her family I you know fought in the court systems for a very long time a out of her you know condition it can be avoided so to me a living will really is a gift your family because it avoids any conflict it's just a matter of honoring your wishes yeah so that's a living will and into other things in our closing two minutes here that are often confusing to people medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney take a moment and is playing with those do well and I think these are very important documents in in your part of your estate plan because let's say for example I'm I'm gonna pretend that my husband Rick I had a health condition that no longer allowed him to make financial decisions if if I don't have power of attorney to be able to act on his behalf financially yeah then he may have accounts like a retirement account you think about retirement accounts are typically in one name their individual retirement accounts of four oh one K. as in one name and I want to be able to step in and make those financial decisions for my husband if he's medically not able to do so in addition to that we all know that the HIPAA laws have changed drastically over the years right and we want to make sure that we have the opportunity or that you are able to easily help your loved one in in the event of them not being able to make their medical decisions and so for me a last will and testament in a power of attorney for both medical and financial or critical components to estate planning now there are other things you can do with the state planning some people may need a trust but you know one of the things that that I always want to be cautious in you know just blank it's talking about a trust is I don't believe everyone actually needs a trial jury in in the difference and how I feel about it and maybe some attorneys that just sell trust is that you know I don't think you should buy it twice in less you actually needed in there certain situations that would in my opinion in my opinion warrant a trust in the cost of doing a trust but if you don't need it you shouldn't do it so again we're here to help we'd love to be able to answer questions that we can schedule a fifteen minute phone call where we can I'm just answer questions and you know if we see that you do actually need to meet with an attorney we can schedule a visit for you I had to meet with our estate planning attorney at it can be a virtual visit or you can.

S. house seat north of Los Angeles after his democratic rival Christy Smith congratulated him Wednesday afternoon the special election was to fill the vacated seat a first term Democrat Katie hill who resigned amid a house ethics program the sex scandal in Wisconsin Tom Tiffany a state senator endorsed by president trump easily won a special congressional election in a conservative Wisconsin district Tiffany replaces former Republican congressman Sean Duffy retired in September for family

"Editor at RedState dot com Jennifer van Laar Jennifer thanks so much for joining us thanks for having me you know you listen to the pre game show for this race and everyone was saying well it's going to be very close and Christy Smith will likely win because it was a democratic seat that went for for Katie held by nine points last time he cleaned her clock totally cleaned her clock yeah I I have a close friend and been saying for weeks that would be double digit and I was kind of going head protection but of course last night I had to had to hear that called it and he also won in person voting they had a couple of of voting locations a polling locations where people can actually physically show up and cast provisional ballots are I guess drop off their absentee ballots and everyone anticipated Christy Smith really doing well at those locations that didn't happen yeah we did it and I I was one of those that thought it would be in Christie's way although I had heard both among Democrats and Republicans in the district that yet yes Katie health saw that and everyone attached to her and she and Christie had cat had campaign just kind of people are calling on Babis went back in two thousand eighteen that that would attach to Christie in some of these people would the Democrats would definitely go our our independence would go for Garcia because of that but like like you've been in politics a long time you know people say a lot of things but their action it doesn't always match their rhetoric so I wasn't sure that would actually play out and then the prize fifteen happily but it dead and Katie hill still active politically she's running a group now that seeks to influence the politicians and she actively campaigned for Christy Smith was that a problem for her absolutely I know that when her time which is Katie's new pack lunch they had officially put out and in social media graphic endorsing Christie and then those missed disappeared so I I kind of chuckled and thought well if you decide you get don't get my name associated with your pack although since it was a million dollars of campaign funding that started Katie's packet kind of bad with the good thing for her to spend that money in the district where with the race from to start with but I I think that it was definitely a problem and if you noticed in the latest videos where she dead with where she was wearing her mask she didn't mention Christy particularly she just mentioned that the special election eight I don't see her on TV that often anymore right after the scandal took place I saw her on the view and a couple other places but when I do take a look at what she's doing on Twitter she is unbelievably angry and vulgar and I think that she was before for people of followed her through the whole property thousand eighteen election she was pretty much the same I think a little bit it dialed up a little now but that he she's always bad what's going to happen to this race in November because the same two candidates are going to have their name on the ballot in November it'll be a presidential general election not a special election that is kind of when no one's paying attention to politics or no one's paying attention at least to state politics what's going to happen in November well there's gonna be a lot of differences between us race and not one like you said a big difference is going to be that Garcia will have the advantage of incumbency having been in Washington DC and standing up to all of the craziness that close he wants you to ram through Congress and Christy will have more of it the whole session in assembly she's already taken her name off of the bill that you co sponsored with Lorena Gonzalez that data seek to clarify eighty five but actually makes it worse she took her name off that this week and she's gonna be really and a hard place because the dems are gonna want her to go along with their agenda but that's not a gender that played well in the twenty fifth district so she does but without even asking to be held against her well she does well with them she votes with them a whole lot and during the race she did something that I just made zero sense to me she attacked Mike Garcia for being a military pilot in a district where there are military bases there's certainly a lot of veterans there a lot of people who work in aerospace you work at Burbank and at LAX airports why in the world but she do something that ignorant and stupid I have no idea what that was just playing to the base I don't know if you really feel that way or if it was just kind of trying to be that the cool girl I mean there's a new voting center that they opened up in Lancaster over the weekend and adjacent to a Northrop Grumman plant and that was it can totally tone deaf for her to stay in her apology wasn't really an apology it was one of those I'm sorry if you felt that way yeah I said something offensive who thinks the dumbest person on the plane is the guy in the cockpit the dumbest person on the plane is the guy that ordered fish it was ground zero I mean you don't put stupid people in an apple now how angry your local Democrats if they lost the seat because they've been targeting that seat before they won it this last time for cycle after cycle each time the the the margins would get closer and closer and closer and they finally got it and now they lost it at first opportunity how angry or that they're extremely angry but another thing I saw last night among some of the local Democrat activist with a lot of I told you so I didn't like Katie from the start I told you she wasn't mature enough I told you she was going to be trouble and we all got shunned by the rest of the dams for saying that so those times were coming back and saying you should listen to it and not even nominated her in the first place do you think there's a chance that she'll come back and run for that seat again next time if Christy Smith loses I know I wouldn't put it past her it would take the lack of self awareness let me but it it would be a total utter failure because even the dams that are totally on Christy side now are very upset because they spent so much time so much money to win the seat in the first place and they feel like she was totally disrespectful of their sacrifice by the way she acted if you are a Washington DC type and you're looking at this election the special election what should the take away be where's that Katie is still toxic here that the district actually is red and it's not blue like they tried to stay in twenty eighteen that was fraudulently gained by the dad and embedded November they better have their ballot harvesting the Republicans better have that game together or they'll lose it again well how is that going to operate because we have the the pandemic that still here to the point to where everyone has to vote by mail and we can't go to the Hollywood Bowl and we can go to a Dodger games and we can't do all the normal things that we do well if you can't be around people to that extent then you shouldn't be around them the harvest ballots either you shouldn't be governor has not come out and said one way or the other whether that is an essential activity or not the California GOP has attempted to try to get him to say definitively that yes this is essential activity or not but he hasn't so he hasn't I would take that violent I mean that is an essential activity to help people exercise their right to vote and just do it anyway democratic turnout in this race was way lower than Republican turnout and they brought out the big guns to endorse Christy Smith they brought out Hillary Clinton endorsed her I Gavin Newsom certainly did advance E. pelo see former president Obama that had the sting a lot yeah okay just to show that those people didn't care enough about that about the election or have enough of that connection to Christy to come out and blow president trump also tweeted about the race non stop over the weekend and I saw a lot of Republicans who like president trump responding to it engaging with have been engaging with the race he still is popular president trump that is in maybe not California state wide but for Republicans for people who voted for him last time around I see immense popularity still with that crowd very much so I think that definitely helped to energize them because they felt so big no word by the National Party and so to have that knowledge when I think was big and I think that that investment by trampoline that he's going to make sure that the money for valet parking is there in November and the other thing among Democrats I've talked to numerous Democrats that I were voting for Garcia because of eighty five the head of Christie's buddy buddy with Lorena Gonzalez and her advocacy for that I've that bill and portion of that bill she was part of of asking for twenty million dollars from Houston to help enforce eighty five this year having looked at this race as closely as you have do you believe this means that other seats in California that Republicans lost last time namely in Orange County San Diego and the Central Valley those seats could come back to the GOP in November absolutely if they did about harvesting at the end and they connect with their community if they're.

"Christy Smith is a founder Presley wealth management Matt Kennedy investment adviser representative now in his eleventh year with Christy in the team I mark LA glad you're with us and you know one of the things I think is interesting I don't care matter Christy whichever of you answer this talking about the budget and the Presley wealth retirement money map we go through all those different levels of income investment tax health legacy planning and all of that is that it doesn't matter the Presley wealth money map the budget they're not stagnate you don't just set him up and then never look at him again because yeah change right that's a good point as a matter of fact I mentioned that the retirement analyzer is something we in our data into but it lives in the cloud and so we make this plan then you come back in the next quarter and we say well what's changed well you know we've really been thinking and we think we might want to work to pay off the house before we retire and then we have to talk about okay if we put that scenario into the analyzer does it blow up your potential to take that trip to the a multi coast is it smart to pay off the house no we're talking about things to consider from the end of the year Christy up and running across a number of people who still have thirty year mortgages at four and three quarter some even five percent not a mortgage expert but I know you'll non yes Christy it may be a great time with interest rates having dropped even more for someone to consider refinancing to even a ten or fifteen year home mortgage you know we were talking at the beginning of the show what can you do to help yourself going forward you're into things to think about rates are so low and the fed may cut again what a great way to save on some interest payments if you're in a five percent thirty year mortgage you may be able to find a three and a half percent fifteen that could save you so much money right Christy I mean I know we're not mortgage lenders but we are numbers people and to me that makes a lot of sense well I think that's why it's so important to have a partner in retirement as a partner because that's really what we believe we are to our clients is their partner we walk on three we create the plan we follow through the plan we hold them accountable for the plan that's right if they come in and you know we're sitting there having a conversation and we realize they've spent way more money than what they were planning on spending we have a conversation about it the thing is is that creating a plan is is so important but following the plan and an understanding that the plan is working on a continual basis is just as important as creating the original plan well and it's never set it and forget it it's an ongoing of all things living plant especially in the three years prior to and after you retire again we would love to help build that plan.

"Smith normally hear the founder of Presley wealth Christie's got a little laryngitis today so what we did was we went to the bullpen and it's finally time Matt that we bring in the third adviser at Presley well maybe the first adviser for most and that would be Tiffany napa so Matt wanted to introduce us to our co host today yes we've talked about you for ever now I have to tell you Tiffany it's like you want me to do the radio show I've never been on the radio in my lifetime like Tiffany you'll be fine you're a good and liver so Tiffany nap has been with us for over a year tell people a little bit about how you got the business it cetera etcetera well I got the business about I'd say three three and a half years ago formally worked in the school system in a little bit of finance area but finally decided you know it was time to take the leap and I became a license and three years ago I started work for a big big national company but decided that I'd really like to bring it home and to get to know clients a little bit more intimately with them have a more family type atmosphere and just my passion to help other people and help move them forward financially into a you know a a long happy retirement yeah I remember you saying and this meant a lot to me and Christy you said you know the firm I'm working for I mean they're great they're a big firm but I'm captive to what they use whereas with us you have independence and you felt like you could go better plans for people right absolutely being independent means so much more having so many tools in the toolbox available to clients yeah versus filling captured absolutely makes a huge difference in what we can do for our clients so you made it through the first of three minutes to show and you're fine so mark see she's a radio pro she'll still have no problem and here's the key the listeners are very glad at Tiffany's here because our topic today is about women whether you're single married or widowed we're to talk about the unique financial considerations that women really are facing when it comes to approaching retirement or if you're already retired so we do need one or talk about women we definitely the women don't hear matter my perspectives probably to do we need a woman's inside because here's a stat for you eighty percent of men die married eighty percent of women die widowed divorced or single so now how does that fact mad that that most women are gonna live their husbands anyway how does that impact planning for retirement well I I think there's a disconnect and okay ladies I know the show was about women and I'm not a woman but after doing this with a woman Christy Smith for over eleven years now there seems to be this massive disconnect I think part of it is because we're in the Deep South right she raised the kids I earned the money that's not always the case but there's a lot of that though right Tiffany now I think a lot of time women don't want to be bothered with the finances I've met your mom she's a lovely lady but I've never asked this question your mom is divorced correct correct did she take care of the finances or did your dad no my dad always took to what happened when they got divorced how did she deal with that she turned to you right and it's just been very difficult for her sense because yeah just not even maybe perhaps happen a lot of the knowledge or just push it to the wayside because it was just for her to deal with it in so so mark I think a lot of women need to be empowered to know what's going on listen some I hate to sound sexist but it's true some men we meet with they absolutely want to know everything about the exchange traded funds the mutual funds the stocks some men are like a just don't let me run out of retirement income right some women of the same way a lot of women are becoming more empowered to learn more about mutual funds and stocks and how it all works but so many times the phone will ring Hey we heard you on the radio would like to come into Presley wealth management for a meeting with you or Christy or Tiffany and we'll say great are you bringing your wife not she's not interested in this show just that they're in play on our iPad and we insist that she attend tell us true planning means she at least knows what's going on so I guess what I'm saying Tiffany is ladies and power yourselves to know correct me using your mom as an example and she's a lovely lady but you say this transition has been hard for her absolutely and so maybe you know being involved more free time right in this is just not an uncommon occurrence I mean I I will say that so what we want to do is just avoid a circumstance in which a woman say her husband does pass away that she had no idea what to do next where the funds are how to how to proceed so we feel like that's part of our duty you know in part of our responsibility and hope that when the clients come in that they bring their wives so that we can go over you know the circumstance in which what if he does pass a white man in how young what can we do to help them in the long run you know mark I think it boils down to the fundamental differences if you will and I'm gonna be a little bit broad stroke with a broad stroke of the brush here but I think we have to first talk about what men are typically most concerned about in retirement and what women are most concerned about Tiffany I'll ask I mean you're the woman in the room as a woman what concerns you most about your own retirement when you think about retirement or you think about your mom's retirement what concerns you the most out live in my money number one you know did I save enough do I have it properly invested so that one day I will be able to retire number one and number two well I run out of money and honestly if something happened to my husband what would my life look like right and I think mark that maybe one of the biggest differences men tend to look at how much money have I say this is just my observation from eleven years in the business men will often say how big is the stack of money where is Tiffany women will say how long will that stack of money last men tend to be more aggressive not always but you know broad brush strokes men tend to be less of a risk averse bit men tend to be sometimes poor planners you know like I can see six months down the road that's good enough that is kind of like this my dad you know is a retired minister mark and I used to listen as he would counsel couples marriage counseling as a minister and I remember he would often tell couples when it comes to money sometimes men view money as a river and sometimes the river runs wide and sometimes the river runs narrow but you know I got I assumes and it's going to be there I can just see around the bend of the river whereas women see money as like a will how deep is it you know how is it going to last long enough so these are questions that both men and women you both have to tackle have you set aside enough for retirement I mean man or woman single or merry black white pink purple red doesn't matter this is the question you have to ask yourself have we set aside enough and will it last all of our lives in Tiffany you said it best what if something happens ladies what if your husband does suddenly die what happens what happens if you lose a part of social Why not consult a professional when it comes to your money, just like your doctor the advice you get from a financial adviser and direct impact on your quality of life? Are you paying too much in fees with your current financial professional what can happen to your nest egg? "You mentioned bias before the show began and in relation to onus and bias. We often talk about that as if it's just sort of a feeling, and I'm not totally verbalizing this right here accurately, but it's kind of like, oh, well, this isn't exactly exist. It's just the way that someone feels or this is a certain reaction that happens. But I think that when a system is set up with bias, which you can't really avoid because it any system that deals with humans is sort of inherently going to have a bunch of that the problem is I think we do a lot of this to ourselves. We don't just sort of do or have bias affect other people. We tend to do it ourselves. I think it was an example in one of either your talks or possibly some other data those reading in preparation for this about jobs, and we find that a lot of times we will buy we will be biased against ourselves. In fact, the glasses example is kind of interesting. I mean, you can't really when you say, oh, you have twenty. Twenty vision. Obviously, you're not smart enough to be in this room. That's not really what we're talking about. But there's a lot of there's a lot of young men and women people of color at cetera that will say things like, well, I don't know if I can do this. But when I was it's very counter to the narrative that I grew up with which is I think it's a Chris rock thing where he says like you tell some white suburban kid that he can be anything he wants to be when he grows up, and he looks at you like you have to heads because he knows that. He knows that obvious. Yeah. No, actually, the the data behind what you're talking about that the fact that we can do a bias tour solves like we can actually internalize. It is absolutely true. So Christy Smith of Deloitte, did some research a couple years back, and it showed that sixty one percent of people cover that was her language for it cover in this way. Figuring out how to hide their rejoin their fresh takes in ideas. They're typically, it's not just under seen an underserved groups like women. And people of color, and so on it's actually all of us. So even in the category that you're talking about about white men, which is such an interesting category. Forty five percent of white men do it too. And some of the examples might be that young person who wears glasses. So he doesn't we might appear more experienced. It could be the deeply religious person who hides their beliefs in there out of office message in so, you know, because he doesn't think that's acceptable. It could be the new dad, I know my son in law when he had one of his kids actually said to me, he's not gonna take paternity leave him though. His company offered it a hand. I said why I mean like, it seems like you really want it. And he goes, yeah, I'm afraid people will think I'm not committed to my career. So until we're conforming to expectation which by the way, no one's even said, but is the norm. And so we covered to whatever norm is and nor has largely been defined by. Very old like nineteen fifties archetype, right? That. It so old most of us don't even recognize it. It's just a mythology almost but people do it not because they're stupid or because they want to hide themselves. It's because that's how power works. So what you're doing? Is. You're looking around the table on saying who has power. Okay. How do they behave? And then you start to emulate that behavior. That's all. I mean, we're just doing it to get get our shot for ideas met some point. We realize we can remember own ideas because we've kind of given them up along the way. Yeah. I think the data that you had cited or that was cited an article that you.
