Christopher Miller: Impressions of General Mark Milley
"Milley I mean you weren't there that long but what was your sense of general milley Oh I knew Mark I knew Millie from general milley you know from previous I've been in the army I enlisted in 1983 as a private left as a colonel in 2014 So I did some rotations never worked directly for him but I was very familiar with him You know and then to end up there working with him he's the chairman and the joint chiefs of staff He was my right hand man And you know I've been raised to really respect the general officers and then to be exposed to kind of the stuff that they do and how they politicize things was really disheartening And that's one of the reasons I wrote the book The doggone I was raised with accountability mattered You were responsible for everything that did or didn't happen in your command And then I saw their behavior And how they kind of disregarded the direction of the president and civilian officials And that's not the way it's supposed to work at all And really concerning And thanks for asking the question because these are the things we need to talk about The Chinese 5 balloon is great but the real issue is what kind of advice did the chairman give and his best military advice and how did that work and did the field commander get to talk about this These are the things that really concerned me that are kind of a little opaque I know to a lot of the American public but that's why I wrote the book

Christopher Miller: Three Calls on Jan. 6 With Pelosi & Schumer
"So when they show that they show a call where Schumer and Pelosi are talking to me it's really really short segment I don't think we talked three times I think they're showing the second call The first call is what I talk about at the beginning of my book where they were really you know obviously I mean they've been attacked I got all that so I'm empathetic to the fear I've been there I know that But the call that they show on TV on that hearing thing is not I don't think that's the one that I refer to in the book I'd like hey I got a question for you Mark Has anybody seen the entire Pelosi the daughter has anybody seen the entire video Like unedited No So I'm kind of hoping But tell me tell me about it Tell us about that first call Describe what you have in the book It's very interesting Yeah I mean I was getting yelled at by speaker Pelosi McConnell was on there too They were at a secure location They had moved from the capitol to a military installation nearby I didn't know that at the time I knew they moved but they left their troops behind I mean everybody else was in the Senate in the House chambers you know getting moved out but a whole bunch of them had moved to this alternate location So they were just demanding immediately National Guard support and whatnot and I described it as unhinged It was I've been in the military I've been in combat right I was a green beret and my thing is when things are bad you got to calm down And I understand they've never been anything that bad but it was really kind of they weren't speaking rationally It was real dramatic and we promised we were moving as fast as we could

Christopher Miller: Trump Offered Dems Support Prior to Jan. 6
"I want to ask you a couple questions Were you in the meeting January 3rd or January 4th cash Patel and others In which president Trump offered or authorized national guardsmen to protect the capital Yeah I was there And that's been totally that's been totally misinterpreted by so many politically motivated quote unquote news outlets and politicians Yes we were there President was quite clear He said provide whatever support you need to the doggone federal and local officials to protect protesters and demonstrators that day Yeah I was with cash Did he mention the National Guard as cash has said and others have said Oh yeah Yeah That's all in the up and up You know the National Guard as you know but a lot of your listeners you know learning about this the National Guard he controls the National Guard in the District of Columbia because it's not a state normally the governor does but since there's no governor the president does he delegate the debt authority to me and I was so I was in charge of the National Guard for that for that episode and for those events So yep cash was there and president And he also called me I think on the 5th and talked about it So yeah he was very clear about provide whatever support you need and gave me the authorization to provide whatever that was requested

Christopher Miller: Trump Never Implied a Military Coup
"Wouldn't it be strange to be authorized in whatever assistant was needed to protect the building and the people and including the National Guard and then to encourage an insurrection Don't you think that would be weird Well Mark you're a lawyer You know as well as I do Capitol Hill is controlled by the legislative branch and the military and the executive branch works for the president and if you go up on Capitol Hill with military force without an invite from leadership there we know what that's called that's called a military coup Was it going to be party to that and the president absolutely and no way shape or form ever in that even implied that the military would be used inappropriately So yeah I think that's kind of why I wrote the book man I was like the rest of the story needs to be told I got really upset because you know we swear the great people that serve our country in the armed forces They're sworn to uphold and protect and defend the constitution and to have these politicians and stuff imply that they would violate their oath of office is just reprehensible to me

I'm Dr Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent. Hard to believe the first documented case of Corona virus here in the United States was just about a year ago. Scientists are still learning about this novel virus, including the fact that, according to the CDC, most infections are spread by people with no symptoms. That means that at least half of new infections come from people likely unaware that they are infectious to others. Peak infectiousness is about five days after someone becomes infected. That's typically before someone is going to show symptoms. If they even start showing symptoms, it's called being pre symptomatic. Other people again will never develop symptoms and that's asymptomatic. So until a vaccine is more widespread, where a mask watch your distance wash your hands. "Madeleine brand US military veterans were among the mob of Trump supporters storming the halls of Congress last week. Actually, Babbitt, the San Diego woman who was shot and killed during the riots served in the Air Force. So did Larry Randall Brock. Who was photographed inside the Senate chambers carrying zip ties and has since been arrested and the shirtless guy with the giant horns Jake and Jelly. He's former Navy to the Pentagon. The fact that ex military members were involved in the capital riots is not surprising. Just last month, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller ordered a review of current policy around extremist and hate group activity. Within the military. But with more than a million active duty members and 18 million veterans. Where's the Pentagon begin to address this? Bryan Bender is senior national correspondent for Politico. He wrote about this and he joins me now. Hi. Good to be here could have you Well, it seems every day we're finding out that more veterans were involved in this crazy insurrection at the Capitol. Were you surprised to see so many people who are military veterans doing that? You know, I think all of us were surprised by the whole thing. But as you pointed out, as more information came out about some of the people involved in breaching the capital Including what seemed to be some of the ringleaders. Had military ties, I think was it was a little surprising, But if you consider the issue that you know, the military has kind of dealt with this on and off for years. Usually things seem fine. But then there's a couple of incidents where extremists in the ranks either do things or say things and everybody focuses on it again. And what a lot of the experts tell us is that the rise of extremist viewpoints in the military tends to mirror rises in society at large. So if there's more of this going on in the wider Population, It tends to see more heavily in military and a lot of the right wing groups. Anti government militias, for example, tend to recruit people that have military experience. Either people already in the military or Those who come out of the motor and I think it's important. Oh, make that distinction. These were all former military people. And so it's not clear yet whether They had some of these views while they were in service or whether they develop them while they came out one of the things the Pentagon out of people are getting radicalized happen while they're in the milk. Getting radicalized while they're in the military. So they're not radical before joining the military. What in the military radicalizes them? I mean, it's hard to know. I mean, what radicalizes anybody. There's obviously a lot of opportunities whether it's online. Or through other means to be exposed to some of these viewpoints, and you know some of these groups. You tend to target people in the military. You know, it's not that you know, there's an army of extremists that are hiding in the U. S military. I think the concern is that it's still a small percentage. But it's A little bit more viral in its growing in numbers. And like it, society at large. Perhaps there are people in the military who feel like it's a more permissible environment for these kinds of ideas. So the Pentagon like You said a month ago had started to address this issue because I think people were sounding the alarm. And so the Pentagon is actually right now engaged in a series of things to try and get a better handle on how Serious for problem is do they have the right procedures in place? The right training spot these people? What are the signs that there might be people with East extremity? It's in the military branches. What do we need to do about it in other ways to prevent people from becoming radicalized, so they don't leave the military and then Like his father last week, go play prominent roles in some of the illegal activities. Right. And so one group that specifically recruits members of the military or ex members of the military is the oath keepers. A right wing notarized extremist group. What is their stated reason for wanting military members or ex military members in their ranks? Like what do they want to do with that? That knowledge and training and expertise Well, you know some of these groups and you can't really lump them all together. You know, they have some commonalities. They have usually very racist views. Ideological driven. They're also very anti government and You know if you're an anti government militia, or you don't believe that the US government is legitimate and you think needs to be overthrown. And obviously you're gonna want people who have some skills who may be potentially know how to do that. Well, Is there a kind of an irony there? I mean, here they are recruiting people who were trained by the government itself. To overthrow the government. I mean, or two at least. They're fighting against the current idea of the government. So I mean, there is. There is an irony there. Don't you think there's an irony there, But at the same time, you could look at it if you know sort of the ultimate coup. In other words, we're going toe get the Best in the brightest from within that illegitimate government. We're gonna brainwash them. We're going to change their views and bring them to our side. So it's kind of surprising if this has been going on for a long time, and not just for the last four years, But for a while longer than that, that the Pentagon really doesn't have any idea. Too, about the extent to which Its members. Some of its members have been radicalized. Well, I think I'm the one and it's it's difficult. To spot some of these elements within the military. In other words, you know we live in a date age where you're probably not gonna flaunt it. You're not gonna walk through the mess hall. You know, wearing Nazi SS tattoo or display your sympathies overtly. And so that means that commanders at lower levels need to be aware of the signs. They need to be aware of where their soldiers are going online. What you know subscriptions are they Signing up for all the experts will say it's it's the kind of issue that needs constant vigilance. And needs to be understood in all levels of command that this is an issue that we need to be aware of, and Like a lot of institutions, you know? Gets into crisis mode when something pops up soldiers Found. For example, Like you know, Florida National Guardsmen, it turned out a couple of years ago, it founded a neo Nazi group. Obviously, once that came to light, they took action. It's like the problem in society at large. It Rears its ugly head. You do something about it? Then you sort of go about your business. And you know years could go by where you're not necessarily being vigilant, And I think that's what people say. We are right now where this is an issue that's kind of languished. Well, A lot of these groups were activated, radicalized when Barack Obama became president, first black president People didn't like that. And I am wondering if the next secretary of defense retired General Lloyd Austin, who's black. If he's confirmed as next secretary of defense. What could that spark in terms of a reaction within the military? You know, it's good question. I mean, I think it's definitely On people's minds. But, you know, I guess I look at it this way, which is military is a very diverse organization. And I mean, obviously there are a lot of African Americans in the military Latinos. All kinds of people from all kinds of walks of life and so writ large the institution. Knows that these viewpoints are bad. They know that it's eroding the military, and so they're willing to do something about it. So I think if general often comes in, he makes this a priority, and I think most people think you will. People will follow this lead. And you know the military. That's one good thing about the institution, which is you have to follow orders. So if there are new procedures in place, new training in place to try and Get a better handle on this issue. I think people will get in line. Bryan Bender is senior national correspondent for Politico. Brian. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up why black.
