Afghan Leader Digs In on Peace Talks Despite Progress, Officials Say
"Afghanistan's chief peace envoy, Abdullah Abdullah, said that the U. Abdullah spoken and Kara, where he saw it. Turkey's support for negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban that are taking place in cutter to find an end to decades of war. The talks have made little progress so far. Abdullah said of the US's decision to reduce troop levels in Afghanistan from over 4.5 1000 to 2.5 1000 quote. This is the decision of the U. S administration and we respect it. And quote, acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced that we would reduce troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan by mid January, in line with President Trump's pledge to bring our forces home. Afghan officials have expressed concerns that a rapid reduction in American troops could strengthen the negotiating hand of the Taliban, while the militants are still waging a full fledged insurgency against government forces. Abdullah said it's not like things will go a zwei wish, adding however, that he welcomed to the fact that 2500 troops will remain and NATO will also retain its presence. Abdullah said, quote what form or what shape it will take. That remains to be seen, but they will certainly push for a peaceful settlement and quote Washington signed a deal with the Taliban in February to pave the way for the dough, hot talks and American forces eventual withdrawal. We championed the deal as Afghanistan's best chance at a lasting peace. Folks, This is an endless war. Both Turkey and cutter are supporters of Isis and their friends in Afghanistan hasn't built a solid military defense. "Home troops from insurgent wars when in office in February of this year, he had representatives meet with the Taliban. It was a very controversial move, which, by the way I actually supported I feel we're better off talking with their enemies than fighting them. An agreement was made, which said the United States would withdraw all troops by May of next year if the militants meet certain terms of the agreement, including a break with Al Qaeda and genuine progress in the peace talks. However, since then, violence is surged, and our presence has done nothing to quell it. If anything, It's had the opposite effect. So now in his peak, Trump decides he can fulfill a four year old campaign promise. Bring most of the troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq and end our 20 year war with the Taliban with a stroke of his pen this despite a confidential memo, former defense secretary Mark s. Percent, the president based on input from senior military leaders, who unanimously cautioned that conditions were not adequate to make additional troop cuts in Afghanistan. As for his worry was that they could undermine the peace talks, which began earlier this Year. So in classic Trumpian behavior, the president decides that as always, he knows more than the generals that this move will yet be another promise that he kept and will enable him to walk around telling everyone I ended the war. By the way, it's the longest one in U. S history. Now here's an important question to consider. Wouldn't fewer U. S. Troops in the region increase the possibility of more injuries or deaths among the few remaining American troops who might be seen? It's easier targets. Well, why would trump care anymore about them than the more than 246,000 American lives lost today from the pandemic, many of them because of his shrugging off the seriousness of the Corona virus threat? As if this isn't enough to cause worry and disappointment. The New York Times reports that President Trump asked his senior aides what options he has for an offensive strike on Iran's primary nuclear site. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, met with the president now by no stretch. Could any of these guys be labeled doves? And yet the word is they pleaded with him not to do something that would have a rand turn the strike into a full fledged confrontation. It appears they succeeded in convincing him that this is not the way the administration should leave the Oval Office. But despite that, obviously good advice, Trump still seems to be fixated on getting back in Iran for reacting to his withdrawal by increasing uranium enrichment beyond the purity threshold it agreed to as part of the landmark nuclear deal. Made by the Obama administration. It apparently never even occurred to him that Iran sadly has the right to do that, because Trump tour up the deal and reintroduced economic sanctions. I talked yesterday about the way Trump is comporting himself. He seems to have a scorched earth policy where he's trashing 70 things that we're proud of in this country from our electoral process to the world ended way administrations may peacefully change while our values remain respected. And civil tradition means a lot to a relatively young nation. And yet this smarmy man is intent on undoing it as much as he can. I'd say we dodged the bullet when we voted against him. But it frightens me to realize he still has the title of president for 63 more days now that he's back on the job after a week spent pouting over his loss. It's business as usual. Anyone who looks at him the wrong way gets fired. Nothing unusual there, but I'm beginning to get really scared. The mere fact that even thinks about striking Iran is not something we can just slough off. People could die. The world itself would be threatened and the United States will really be alone in the world. He's acting like he wants to punish Americans who didn't vote for him. And it's for those who did s O. What? He's hell bent on leaving as many problems for incoming President Biden as he can. Oh, the things he could do That's the Ron Owens report.

He fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper via tweet, which I guess is appropriate. Yeah, he does a lot on Twitter instead of saying, you know you're fired. He just said he used the word terminated, effective immediately. But of course through in. Thank you for your service. Uh, so apparently AH, Counter counter terrorism Center director Christopher Miller will be the acting defense secretary, apparently not a surprise to Esper. He had been planning his resignation letter for the president. Yeah, and and I'm reading the president's tweet right now, and he refers to Christopher Miller, whom you mentioned charity, he says Chris will do a great job great in old caps, and then as you said, he said, Mark Esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service. Probably not the last termination of the Trump administration before the year's out, going to be very interesting, and in fact, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggesting that this is just a first signal of what she terms a lot of chaos. That she expects coming from the White House between now and January. Well, that's difficult for Pelosi that a lot of love there between the speaker and the president is not gonna go good move. "These unrest the movies moving as well. The relationship between say miles Jeff has died really interested. It doesn't go down. The I was desperately hoping they wouldn't go down the route of he becomes like the JJ J of this universal swearing bring down spider man at all costs. And I'm so glad that the end was some sort of reconciliation there between the call and the vigilante here also what year is Brian Tyree. Henry having my God. Yeah. He's in pretty well from self long continue because he's doing pretty well for us as well. Last question comes from Paul f Reagan when Gwen mutt miles. Why does she use a fake name? The whole thing about her coming back. We in the past knowing to find miles didn't make lick of sense. I guess just wanna turn the movie early. I think the we in the past makes total sense to me because dimensional travel Gada Timea y stuff. Yes. Bowl. Forty two year old Peter Parker and a twenty six Parker and they both sound exactly on a nineteen thirties. Peter Parker who sounds really different than has the best lines movie. He was hilarious him with the rubik's. Purple the the the constant wind going on around him. And there's a moment. West spider him on Spiderman was shoulder and his spot hams is like flowing in the breeze because he's on him on wa he is also in that bubble where the breezes it. So good. Yeah. So it totally makes sense to me that she'd come through weaker Lee. That's kind of time why he stuff totally fine. The the fight is they will react to each other. When they meet that there is this sort of spider tingle when all of the meat, so it I didn't have a problem with actually sort of made sense. Guess he didn't have it smiles at the have it when he meets her of he's been bitten which by ways. No, the thing that another clue to earn being the prowler like how did he not take into that particular tunnel because he'd been there the night before presumably working for the kingpin? But yeah, but then again miles has flop sweat and other things to worry about trying to impress his hot girl that he's really connecting with on the shoulder touch. A lovely things will, hey. Don't try to home ks miles. Morales is a professional. Working better for my Herschel ally than anyone else pretty much. I have another idea Gwen thing. Okay. There's another Gwen Stacy in these universe and simply right? Yeah. Because she's coming from everyone's coming from world with Peter Parker already much seems like maybe Peter Parker and Peter be park. So presumably there is also a Gwen Stacy in this universe that miles. Morales has met yet. So if she's going around sending Gwen Stacy, and then he meets another one Pinault's fair enough works share works for me. All right final question. Who's favorites by go petty poke is robo specifically when it had a little sad face on it. That was the most parking poll the film for me. I'm gonna say Spiderman warr because I've just remembered him with rubik's cube. Just everything he does any sense just genius of stillness, your occasionally, they recording the film. They just go out and Mike. Mike that this year? He's been Spiderman on superman such long last a banner year for him. What a what a year, but he hasn't played honor. No, his uncle his uncle. Oh, my God under another proud to prowlers fact in homecoming. So yeah. So this is not the MCI. We you know that. That's that's fine that is definitive. But that's a very frigging point. Helen, you're welcome. He. Mentioned his nephew at some point as well. Holy shit. It's blows the singer wide. Open doesn't really does. It really does say hang. Why is he Davis if he's never mind? Okay. So his mum is Morales. His dad is Davis. His dad was a Baden hung around with his uncle and did by worked for the kingpin back in the day and protest about that his mum he had custody of miles gave him her name an eminent dad turned over new leave Jefferson turned over new leaf and became a corporate very, very straight. Indeed, go to the name stuck anyway. So he's miles Morales. And also someone else porn down, otherwise, it'd be miles. Davis. That'd be pretty awesome question about the Chris pine thing. Say is. I was sitting there thinking gaudy sounds a lot like Chris pine. But I know this character isn't Chris pine, I know he's Jay Johnson. So it's so weird that Jay Johnson son so much like Chris pine gosh. I'm surprised by that on. My sister was literally whispering. My the whole time going. That's chris. No. I think it's Johnson. Just sounds like Chris pine, but yeah. So I was I was kidding myself about the voice. So so that the death dude come as a surprise. That's interesting. I think it's all the death in the first thirty seven minutes showed that London comic view of a couple of months ago. And I saw the first studies of minutes from tastic didn't put the the focus on the character toll on just Chris pine will pop up in his university. Even if it's not technically speaking as universe. I think he's really cool the idea behind Peter Parker as you may have heard in the in the interview is that he's sort of Uber. Peter Parker that he's the ultimate Spiderman, but not ultimate Spiderman it gets confusing anyway. But you know, he has he's the super super duper Peter the pulse of what this carriage. It can be like he's young. He looks like the, you know, he's ABS doesn't love pizza. He's sounds like Christmas high. He looks. He's you know, like Chris pine Chris pine he is he is. Endlessly, heroic even at the end when he has breakfast broken back or something he is still defined interface of the kingpin and his big fist. And you know, he has the he has an aunt may who has evolved. Well, beyond the other aunt May's. She's built this incredible spider cave and all sorts of stuff and spider gadgets. And but still surprised me. I'll be honest. I was expecting him to come back at some point. Yeah. I guess it works better that he didn't. Because then it puts the pressure on miles to be the Spiderman. Yeah. By the way, it's really hard for me to talk about these multiple spider-man's with singing the song from Kimmy Schmidt, which types of things I it's it's a song from Spiderman to the musical seeking vitamin to too many Spiderman. And it's it's kind of the title song. I highly recommend just Google Titus andronicus came Schmitz, could you give us a bar gives us to bars, and I will crush that spider, man. And then that there's Spiderman till live this spider. Man. It's it's amazing. Well, he doesn't he doesn't much better than idea. I'd like to take a turn. Sorry, turn. But you would you like this you like the fact that the the the Chris pine Spiderman ended up in Chris pine box? That's really harsh. I mean, I do like I didn't hope for it. But like you wanna you come pained, actively leaflets. It was a flyer kill spider a flash bulb. No. I just I just think dramatically it works. Well, in terms of miles development, because this is miles story heighten mind, either as well because he was he was blown d-. It was weighed having a blown sparring. Live in a world with ham. Whether is an animating goal. Spite a person who has a spider robot blunt blunt, Pete's Paul. Graces outta thing. Ben is the only person keeping alive the website boned, not blown dot com..

Steve did goes in their car bay. There's benda's. Absolutely. They're all they're all in there all of them. But yeah, there's also Seth Rogan movie that I've seen movie couple times down. I can never remember what it's called. But something like keeping. I don't know. It's a generic Seth Rogan type things. But apparently, these are all these roll done with with the respect. The the, okay and approval of filmmakers from Sean, which is the the much mooted ingest, Shaun of the dead sequel, you could see a poster for that in Times Square. It's just lots of lots of layers here as well. And you're right. Like Myles is. Also, you know, Peter Parker would never be throwing graffiti up onto a subway platform, or slapping stickers onto signs or just showing those little little moments of rebellion that you know, he doesn't want to be put into that box. That society wants put him into an us really interesting blooming for that Carter, I think and also it really plays in nicely to the I think the film. Big twist, actually, it's too big twists in this film credit. You may think third degree. My twist. I west is his uncle is the prowler did aimlessly coming first of all. And Secondly, the big the other big twist is at the first Peter park. We mate he gets defied. I did guess about his uncle though immediately. But before he turns up in the. Because he was about. And I guess he was that character by maybe ten minutes before really. Yeah. But working on hill in a her. Honestly, don't remember because I've seen it once I would like to say again, I'm going to see it again multiple times. But unfortunately, the timing hasn't worked. But no, I just thought it would make more sense. It would make most sense if he was if he was his uncle I thought he was up to no good in terms of whenever he gets cold that immediately tunnel didn't think he was working for the kingpin on certain prowler. I think I figured it out about ten minutes after it was revealed that way. Were in the prouder sued, wait a minute SaaS. Implicit. That's pretty twist. What would you finds the home with? No that twist funds again of marvel puzzle quest when Nola twist because the prowler the iron Davis iteration is a playable character on marvel..

"We're way and then other times become smoother as he begins to become in sync with this powers on your Ryan Helen, as well talking about could this movie, only minutes animated film, and I think yeah. Because because of the the way that the different Unimak styles of Spiderman Doiron, spider ham and Gwynn's spider. Gwen all crash into each other that could not work in a live action said. I was thinking during the film. I was thinking unday gonna go down the route of having the Tom Holland Spiderman show up in this movie at some point. And how would that work would be Mary Poppins style who framed Roger rabbit thing where he's Yoni live action element in this animated girls would be amazing. I want that for the sequel, but but then again because this is an animated movie, they don't know their automated. Right. So therefore, the Tom Holland woman has to be on two right or maybe. But maybe he'd be love action, but he'd be like the dead pool. Maybe maybe maybe. Tom holland. I would live that. And especially I think they're sets up that there is a level of awareness, especially because spider ham, when he says, oh, do do animals token this dimension having they understand that they will come from very different places. So I think it feels very open for for live action. Tom Holland to step into that universe. I think that would be the way if if there's a way to kind of the NCAA on this further. Further disgraceful, right? Honestly. Think of ruined that one. But if Tom and Tom interational, Peter Parker, and we're talking about the Tom holiday place. Spiderman, of course, not Tom. Holland historian Thome hauling the director Friday night or Thome honed guy. He fixed James dyers roof, very very clear in this tome. Holland guy plays Spiderman if he were to show up in this movie would be one Peter Parker too many. Or do you think you can never have too many departures? How many Peter Parker's is a preponderance of Peter Parker's or indeed if you will apply through of Peter Parker's, we just had a plethora feeder parkers. I think I think this was this was pretty much the right level of Peter Parker's, at least for one movie because you know, he is the original Spiderman on it sort of you know, you were saying just a few months ago. I think we talked about this. He's your Spiderman like you'll you'll you appreciate the most Marley's exists. But it's Peter Parker thought your Spiderman. Yeah. And I think that, you know, therefore, having to Peter Parker's kind of make sense liked that one was the sort of young more horrific more on top of it. Peter parker. The Chris pine Peter Parker. We know have old four movie Chris's come on on. Yeah. And then you also have the slightly, you know, flabbier reflection of Peter Parker, and the sense that, you know, even the great hero. Even the Spiderman, you know, there is there is a scenario. There is a universal pulsa -bility where he really can keep juggling all the things that he tries to juggle. And he he really does have to lose something that he can't cope with losing. You know, because that's always been his dull, it's always been Peter Parker's dilemma in particular. He's the, you know, his original superhero whose life was made worse by his superpowers, and he was trying to juggle school girlfriend and work other jobs. You know, never ever worked on heroism. It never ever worked for him. And it's kind of there's something quite pure in a way of seeing version of him acknowledges that Israeli impossible to do that. And that maybe it doesn't work out for him on yet. Obviously, he's Peter Parker. So, you know, at the end of the film, he goes back to try again, which is great. Parker. We just expect that he will fail some points. He's he is going to be reconciled with nj the end of the film. Come on, Chris belief. All right. Sure. Sure. Sure. Helen, I was wondering at one point whether he was going to stick around in this universe. Punt one on this version. This newly widowed version of of MJ. She's far too young. We've had this conversation. Does it matter? Not emission. Yes. I mean, it's only what a fifteen year age gap. Do best is to be on this. She could do probably wants to. But she she can. I mean, the whole thing about MJ though, isn't it?.

"So the animators here working furiously. They had to write new software to to really push you vote the way they wanted to push it this movie wasn't it wasn't possible to make this movie in the way that it presented two years ago. But I just I I love the fact that breaks new ground, and it points a new way ahead for mainstream animation even Pixar with we talked for this the podcast to main podcast before Helen, even Pixar. There's a homogenization going on of animation at the moment where it's it's hard even to sometimes tell Pixar movie apart from DreamWorks animation movie apart from an elimination and attainment animation. I well, I think they're all the all the state shed DNA, you'll feel the same to me. And this is a movie that feels fresh and funky and percents stuff in a way that you haven't seen before and away. You know, I think because some questions come coming in from from from this nurse, and some of whom actually don't necessarily like this the style of animated, and it does push it in an interesting direction. But I think hats off to them hats off the directors as well. Rodney Rothman Peter Ramsey. I'm Bob Persichetti because they really have pushed this thing in an interesting direction. The makes you think oh my God. We know these things are coming book movies. They have their orange comic books. They have their origin in art and the printed page, and we know they were gung busters on TV is on a mation. But I never really thought that I wanted to see an animated superhero movie until now until this movie comes along. I'm just thinking if they're all the smartest is and for all visually progressive as this. Then worrying them on. I mean, some of the best movies. I'm sorry are the animated. Yeah. Yeah. Red hood. Obviously, I have a soft spot as well. But this is there are there are certain stylistic things you can do in these in these movies to get closer to the comic book experience, and and bring some of that to life and bring some of that texture to as well, the texture of the animation here is just glorious because it will go from really realistic three three CG to being able to see the texture of the page. It's it's magic left fuel adults reading a marvel comic or more any other other other other ones are available. Exist. You know from this particular from the sixties seventies. It almost feels opening shot of the comics code of thority. We're way is basically saying, okay, we're settling up. This is a more old-timey in terms of the texture of the comic. Not in terms of the action is taking place because miles. Morales is a modern character, very modern take on Spiderman, but I just loved it. And it it feels old-timey while the same time being the most new time thing you've ever seen on the comics code moment. In the press screening Chia really its own really loud chair. Yeah. No. I I've got an old. I've got an old not Nolde big book of Spiderman. Comex it's it's with Jack Kirby's drawings and sees line drawings for him correcting as he goes, huge, huge things can sail the detail, and it felt like that with the with the hundred detail around the edges of this one as well. And also, the the style of nation as far as I can see to my unlearn. I changes concerts movies fines and you Tate's evolves. The movie. So when miles gets bitten by the spider. It does the is something becomes more jerky..

"By. So that was Phil Lord and Chris Miller or depending on who actually spoke. I Chris Miller unfil- lords. And that was a lot of fun. You think we're enough? We have got some listener questions for this podcast. But you would think that's talked about among yourselves a little bit. I you would think that doing sports special for a an animated spite of my movie would be a bit redundant that. There wouldn't be an awful lot to spoil. It wouldn't be an awful lot of plot to get into or major plot shenanigans. But this movie's chock full of stuff to talk about it's it's a fantastic movie. It's not like, you know, cutesy animated for kids for three year olds and up sort of movie. Sorry, ADA, this is this is a movie very much for like everybody and probably only from Biwott seven or eight up even then like, there's some death. So you know, you'd have to ensure of your seven year old being kind of cool with that. But it is it is a film, but has so much kind of textual meat to it so much cowardice sale so much. I mean, the animated is incredibly innovative, but so is the storytelling. So as the way they presented the many many spider worlds. And I think it's one of the first I think it's one of the first comic book movies, really anywhere outside possibly anime and things like a Keira to really grapple with high weird comics can get an how you know completely out there all these interational of character or theme or notion can be, you know, doctor strange certainly into how weird looking comics could be, but I feel like this one is the first one to really explore the weird corners of the marvel verse. And it's kind of different takes on essentially the same idea of person or thing being bitten by a spider. And or and having some pars that may or may not relate to some of those pars the despite. May or may not have you know? Yeah. To boil it down really seriously like, I just stayed -solutely. Then you mentioning the the animation solid, which is one of my favorite things about the film. But one of the thing that's great about it is that it's not just innovation innovation sake in the animation. Feels very tied into into the concepts of these different realities crushing together in the all the same rule slightly different. And I love those moments where you have all these different foams of animation sharing the screen like when pennies on the screen in it. She's an anime character in spite on nor is in black and white, but they're all in the same frame together. And I think yeah. That kind of real shift in automation style feel so baked into the concept of of spite of us the kind of separate things that they really tangled together. I love that about the film. I mean, it was pretty easy to be skeptical at this movie wasn't it when it was first announced I think we were probably weren't even the presence of Lord Miller as producers was something to to cling onto. But we referring skeptical about. Fem whenever it was announced. And. A lot of movies at aren't within the purview of the MC. You that is very easy to go. That's doesn't sound great. Does it? I don't remember this being announced. I only remember the trailer coming. Yeah. Being staunch about that. So I don't remember any skepticism whatsoever. I remember seeing the trailer and being like, yes, I need this in my life. Yes. I think it was announced at the same time as the announcement that the Tom Helen Spider-Man was going to be in the EU. So it was it was kind of that was the big headline. And then it was like, oh, an also doing a an animated one cinema. And it was I think we just didn't get a sense of what that was going to be. I think people didn't massively trust Sony with that property just because of the the arounds amazing spider, man..

"Yeah like i like just thinking about the responsibility that this dude has like we again we're last night hello incirlik so he's playing the young hans yet we just want big deal and there's been you know like onset sort of catastrophes with what are their names the the lego movie yeah yeah phil lord and christopher miller who i really like and wished that i could have seen that movie but like the people have talked about how you know he's that's bring an acting coach on for like for for alden and how like a lot of the problems actually started or stemmed with him in that lead role so i'm just hoping that like you know i have my own thoughts about him in the movie but i just hope that like it doesn't end his career yeah so that's that's that's my wish so alden ron howard and in bradford young shooting it could be bradford good that's very cool he's got a great cast around him great supporting team and apparently it was revealed that he signed on for three star wars movies so it's being built up for success all i know is it should have been you i don't have the hair john solo oh i had no i'm look forward to seeing it i didn't realize it was star wars film i thought it was just a one man movie about where he just talked for an hour and a half monologue literally the worst job i've ever heard.
