Dame Edna creator Barry Humphries dies in Sydney at 89

"Tony Award winning comedian Barry Humphries, internationally renowned for his garish stage persona, dame Edna everage, has died. He was 89 years old. Humphries's death was confirmed by a Sydney hospital where he spent several days following complications from a hip surgery, Humphries had lived in London for decades, and returned to his native Australia in December for Christmas. He found fame as dame Edna everage, a condescending and imperfectly veiled snob whose evolving character has delighted audiences over 7 decades. In 2016, Humphries spoke about playing the quirky character. I've always enjoyed watching her on stage. Because she says things I wouldn't dream of saying. Humphries, a law school dropout found major success as an actor, writer and entertainer in Britain in the 1970s. However, the United States was an ambition that he found stubbornly elusive. Southwest grounds flights nationwide due to technical issues

"Southwest Airlines grounds flights nationwide due to technical issues. Southwest plains were stopped from taking off for what the airline called an intermittent technology issue causing more than 1500 flight delays just four months after the carrier suffered a meltdown over the Christmas travel rush. Southwest and the FAA said by late morning on the east coast that the pause had been lifted. The Dallas based airline blamed the issue on a vendor supplied firewall going down and a connection to some operational data was unexpectedly lost. By late morning on the east coast, southwest accounted for well over half of all delays nationwide, but the airline had canceled fewer than a dozen flights according to flight aware. Resurrection Sunday Is Not About Easter Eggs and Bunnies

"Want to just make this statement and then I'm going to move on, but resurrection Sunday is not about Easter eggs and Easter bunnies. I just want people to understand that. There's an entire history of the pagan connection between Easter and the connection that they try to make with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I understand it's fun. You know, my wife has some little eggs in the backyard. I just want people to understand that it came from a pagan origin. It's just the same way as Christmas. Christmas came from a pagan origin. Christians should be aware of the historical context of some of these things. Now, if you want to celebrate it and with your own motives behind it, then so be it, but just understand that these things have come from a pagan perspective.

What the High Priest Did In Defiance of His Sacred Duty

"What's interesting to me, you talk also about how the high priests were under these tremendous requirements they couldn't do this. They couldn't do that. They couldn't even enter a house. And one thing they could never do is mourn publicly, tear your clothes or whatever, and the high priest. She does that. Tears, his clothes. Yes. In total contravention of what he's supposed to be able to do. It's as dramatic as it gets. Yes, he does that on purpose, of course. Yeah. And Christine John Christmas says, to add force to the accusation. So he says, misses blossom and he's never supposed to tear his clothes, even if his own parents died. But he does it because he and the rest of the chief priests and the members of the set had are determined that Jesus should die.

A Reminder to Seek a Refreshed Understanding of Easter

"Friends, I just sometimes fear that the familiarity of scripture that way that we go through life and maybe spend Sundays at church and celebrate Christmas and then celebrate Easter a few months later, I wonder sometimes if the depths of darkness that surround the story of Jesus crucifixion, if they get lost on us, the true cosmic reality of what was happening in this moment in these days is lost on us because it just is familiar. And my hope and prayer for me and for you is that in this passion week, as we approach Easter, you might hear a little piece in this passage, a little part of this chapter that maybe you haven't noticed before, that stands out to you. When we ask that question, what does this say? I think that's really my heart and my hope is that you hear something. And for me, even though this passage is very, very familiar, the darkness of it, like it's like on display is the worst of humanity.

Stephen Colbert Is Tickled by Trump's Indictment

"You like me or an immigrant to this country. And let's move away from the law for a second. You and president Trump and his team are going to be busy. I want to ask you how you internalize and how you understand this kind of phenomena. This is on a national cable show. It's meant to be humor. This was broadcast yesterday within minutes of the announcement, and it kind of beggars belief. Let's play Stephen Colbert, cut three. Just little something worth celebrating today because literally three minutes before I walked out on the stage here, The New York Times reported a New York grand jury voted to indict former president. And on top of that, he goes on to say this as well, which is even more heinous. This is cut for. Ladies and gentlemen, he was right. We're finally saying Merry Christmas again. This is, I don't know what? I didn't know this was going to be common. I thought maybe it would never come. I used to think, what does it matter if it came? I didn't know it would feel this good. Come on. This is good. This is good news for everybody even him. He now gets to join his J 6 prison choir, you know? The number one on iTunes so a couple of things here that you can react to Boris. Number one, he's making fun of Christians. To go down from about 500. I'll give you ten seconds. So he's making fun of Christians talking about how this is a Christmas present. He's joking about the president going to prison eating ice cream has announcing it. If it were one person, I get it, but it's not one person, it's a person with a TV show. And then perhaps the creepiest of all as an American who chose this country, he didn't even say what the president was indicted for, he just said he was indicted and the audience of fellow Americans goes crazy in ecstasy. Gov. Scott Walker: Upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court Election

"A lot of social media posts about a Supreme Court election coming up. What's the story on that? Yeah, it is the most expensive in state's history. It's probably going to be the most expensive in the history of the country for Supreme Court races and states that have them. You've got two diametrically opposed candidates. One, just as Darren Kelly who I pointed to the bench back in 2016, this guy is like a Scalia on the state Supreme Court. He's brilliant. He is a judicial conservative, why stress that is, he's not a conservative activist. He's someone who understands as he rightly should, that the role the judiciary is to uphold the constitution and the rule of law and no more no less versus someone who's, we've seen liberals before, but we've never seen a candidate to be so outspoken in their radical activism out there, Milwaukee county, former district attorney, office member. That's the DA's office that let the guy who ran down to walk a shot county. They let this guy out in low cash bail and he killed all those people in the Christmas bridge. She comes out of that office. She's now a judge and lucky county Janet prototype which I call her no job Janet. She is someone who's got a horrific record of not putting violent criminals, people who rape children, people who raped even to a guy raped his own aunt, just horrible, horrible criminals. She soft on when it comes to the sentencing. But this woman had gotten millions of dollars from George Soros and people on the left and West Coast and east coast in their pouring dollars into this state because of all the things that are at stake. And she's flat out said she's going to repeal our reforms. So we're pushing back. It went from a big gap to now where Kelly's just down by about two points, but Tuesday is going to be the key. Not only for Wisconsin. But arguably, if it comes to redistricting, it could affect who the next speaker is.

John Zmirak Describes the Media's Response to the Nashville Tragedy

"Is that you? I know you must feel cheated. I'm much shorter and not nearly as smart and not really as old as Alan Dershowitz. You didn't teach at Harvard Law School or anything. What have you done? I love talking to you and so I can joke around about it. What do you want to talk about today? There's a lot of dark stuff in the news. What should we discuss? Well, yesterday, I got to go through the modern media cycle as that horrible shooting in Nashville unfolded. And I was on the phone with other writers from the stream when we were trying to figure out the details. And our first thought was, well, what kind of person is this? How will this how will the how will the media spin this? How will this be used to attack other Americans? I mean, innocent Americans are being murdered, how will our elites use this to hurt the rest of America who didn't have children on that playground? And that's the sad thing. We're distracted from the horror of what's actually happening by our horror at what's going to happen next. Because whenever there's a mass shooting, the Democrats are like children on Christmas morning, they come running down to see what Santa left for them. The best present, like the red schwinn bike is if it's a white male Republican who was at some point in a member of a Christian church. That's what they're hoping for. If the shooter was that kind of a person they are, they are very happy indeed. So and if he's not, they're going to, they're going to sort of fudge the details. So when we first, when we didn't hear the shooter's race, we thought, okay, it's not a white, it's not a white guy. If it were a white guy, we would know immediately. If you were linked to any conservative cause or conservative church, we would know instantly. If his name is something like jihadi Al shabab, and he was yelling allahu Akbar when he did it, they will say motives, we may never know the motives for this killing. Okay? But if this guy ever was a member of young Republicans, 25 years ago, it will be presented as something Donald Trump is personally responsible for.

"Some other things you're recommending Do you recommend drills regular drills I mean how do you tell we're talking to Jeff James former colleague of mine expert and targeted violence How do you tell school administrators and parents are you balance that drill doing drills without frightening the children all the time and to believing you know what I'm talking about What do you recommend in that space Yeah well you know I think kids aren't my youngest is 11 And she saw what happened yesterday And she knows that they do drills at school and it doesn't look you need to find ways to soften it but it doesn't terrify them to practice that We've gotten away from someone walking around and shooting a blank on and pretending they're the assailant because we found that that traumatized even adults So we've gotten away from doing that But just that if you take ten minutes a month to do a lockdown drill just like a fire drill and I tell people all the time if you have a kindergartner who's been through fire drills in their first year of school by Christmas break they know exactly what to do if there's a fire even if the teacher is in the room So if you practice that in conjunction with it that lockdown drill those kids just after a few times those touch points of training in their head they're going to know exactly what to do if they hear it over the intercom if they hear the alarm or if the teacher says hey we're going to lock down And there are ways to just do it as make it a matter of fact thing that you do and you limit you limit the trauma I mean there are going to be some kids who are going to be unsavory about it And we also deal with special needs kids who don't handle it well But you got to do it There's no way to avoid the practice in the training of it

Is It OK to Be White?

"Asked this question of black Americans. Is it okay to be white? And 25% of them said no, and another 25% said they weren't sure. Now, that's kind of disturbing. Imagine they'd ask that of white people. But the point is, I feel like there's just stupid people in every group. So when you ask a stupid question, I just don't understand even why they're taking these polls, but please don't get much Eric. I think you're kind of calming your nerves by dismissing this is silly. When you have things like that, remember the Christmas parade massacre in Wisconsin where black nationalists took advantage and tried to kill as many white people as possible. And the moment they found out it didn't involve a gun and that the killer wasn't white, it disappeared from the newspapers. There is a campaign to spread racial and religious hatred in America. And it comes from the pit of hell. And whether it's on the right or on the left, whether it's white or it's black, it's profoundly evil. And the Rasmussen poll suggested that a lot of black people probably led by white elite opinion by white controlled media, leftist media. Don't think it's okay for white people to exist.

John Coleman Deals With Skepticism in His New Novel 'Miracles'

"To John Coleman about his brand new book. It is a novel, which is to say a work of fiction with the title miracles, as you know, I wrote a book about miracles, which is nonfiction, C. S. Lewis, wrote a book about miracles, nonfiction. This is a novel, a work of fiction, but John in the book you deal with what's right at the center of all of our lives. The skepticism, there are people. I have told some miracle stories. One of the stories I think it's, yeah, it's in the book. It's in my book miracles about the Christmas cross. I remember sharing that story with this incredibly intelligent person right after it happened. And I was so freaked out. It was one of the most miraculous things I've ever experienced. And this person said, yeah, the mind does funny things sometimes. And I said, did you just hear what I said? And you're thinking my mind in front of you, you're not paying attention. You're not being logical. People like really smart people sometimes they don't have the category of the miraculous. They have to just bracket it out because it's too disturbing. Well, and that's one of the tensions I like to explore in the book is, you know, the reaction is not just that the secular world, but of the Christian community. I don't think would be unified around miracles. Correct. And I saw that manifesting in two ways. One, I do think a lot of people that are highlighted, there's a story of a woman named Cheryl street in the book. And I won't ruin too much of it, but she experiences a miracle. She's from a relatively kind of quiet conservative denomination. And she's almost embarrassed to speak about it with the rest of the congregation with her pastor because they kind of think she's probably fooling herself, that it's her mind playing tricks on her. They don't think it could have really happened. And so here's this sincere Christian woman who thinks she's who has experienced the miracle. But when she shares it, she meets skepticism in the church. And then on the other side, not just skepticism, but I think that some Christians, depending on the source of that miraculous happening, we actually feel divided by it would feel aggressive towards the person performing those or those claiming them, it could be false prophecy. And I think there's a real tension in that.

"The Celtics fell out of the top spot in the Eastern Conference for the first time since just before Christmas after losing one O 9 94 to the Knicks. It was New York 6th straight victory. The Knicks took the lead one 42 into the game and never gave it up thanks largely to a strong defense that held the Celtics to just 21% shooting on 42 three point attempts. Malcolm Brogdon led Boston with 22 points off the bench. I thought we got the shots we wanted. We just didn't make a lot, especially from behind the permanent we're used to shooting a good percentage from the three. I think we let that affect our defense a good amount. The next Julius Randle, Emmanuel quickly led all scores with 23 points. Tom, New York.

"christmas" Discussed on Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

"If Jesus is who he says he is in the Bible, why is life full of so many bad things? Today on gospel and life, Tim Keller continues to look at the gospels to discover who the real Jesus is and how we can know him. Here's today's message. Let's read the passage of scripture right there on your bulletin. One that you may have heard before this is Luke two versus ten to 14. But the angel said to them, do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people today in the town of David a savior has been born to you. He is Christ, the lord. This will be a sign to you. You will find a baby wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger. And suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel. Praising God and saying, glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. This is God's word. Now this is the most, I would think of all the passages that are read at Christmas, this is the most famous, the most familiar. And of all the passages, the verse that is the most famous and familiar Christmas verse is probably verse 14. Glory to God in the highest. And in that most famous verse, of the most famous passage, the most famous and key Christmas word. Is this word peace? In other words, what is Christmas all about? Interestingly enough, almost everybody knows. Peace on earth. It's on the Christmas cards. Everybody knows that everybody makes a beeline for this passage, makes a beeline for that verse and makes a beeline for that word, that phrase. Christmas is about peace on earth. It's amazing. Everybody seems to know it. Everybody. But what is that piece? When Jesus Christ was born as a child, born as a baby, he was born to bring this piece. That's what the angels are saying. But what is it? What did he come to bring? Now, I think I've noticed that, and I know I do this too. At Christmas, devotionals and sermons and messages, Christmas talks and messages, are really designed for the emotions. I've noticed that I do it too, but everybody does it, if you're having to deliver any kind of devotional or message at Christmas time, you choose certain words that are evocative of feelings.

We know the true meaning of Christmas and we are invited each year to take time and press into the joy and worship of our savior. Today, let's pray as we prepare our hearts for Christmas. Let's pray. Dear Jesus, you are the child who was born in the manger for us in Bethlehem many years ago. Thank you for humbling yourself and coming down in the form of man to be our eternal savior. Thank you for being wonderful, counselor, mighty God, everlasting father and prince of peace. We declare today that you are wonderful in your perfection and in all that you say and do. You have been wonderful to undeserved sinners like us. We praise you. Thank you for being our counselor, and for sending the Holy Spirit to guide us each day. We praise you for being our mighty God. You have parted seas performed miracles raised the dead to life and conquered and defeated sin. We worship you for being our everlasting father. Even though we have all like sheep, gone astray. You pursue us and welcomed us back into your kingdom and adopted us and called us co heirs with Christ. We thank you for being our prince of peace. This is such a comfort as we suffer in this world of sin and walk through life, knowing the difficulty that we face. We have forever peace and hope in you. As we reflect that you could have left us to our sin, but you had a plan from the beginning to come for us. May we be glad hearted. Villas with the joy and excitement that you came to be our savior and rescue us. Thank you for teaching us that you are ways are not our ways, and that they are better than our own. Help us to have teachable hearts this Christmas time to not only hear your word and think on the gospel, but to allow you to reveal it to us in fresh ways. God, show us new perspectives and give us greater appreciation for what you did and sweeter insight to details in your word, which we have never seen. Enable us to excitedly teach the next generation about your love and how you came to earth. Give us creativity and presenting the gospel message through the Christmas story, help us to have all of you and excitement to share you with those younger than us. Give us wisdom how to teach them the real meaning of Christmas and celebrate together and worshipful ways. Provide new ideas for new traditions to take place that would enable us to fix our eyes on you. Even in the secular celebrations of this holiday, help us to include you and seek you within those other joys knowing that you are creator and made all of the trees and gave us lights and provided chocolate for hot chocolate to the world and gingerbread houses. May we be an amazement at your beauty and your splendor in every season. We pray over those who have a difficult time during the holidays, help them to rest in you and feel seen and cared for by community. We pray that this Christmas would be an intimate time with you. We pray for those who are new to families or are part of new traditions to feel welcomed and enjoy this new sweet season. You are so good and we praise you for being the savior of the world. I'm in. I'm in. "Of the preacher mean of the person you are preaching about? Yes. But we're asked to power the true power lies in the life of this person. Yes. So while you're preaching the gospel to them and then you're not leaving the life of the person you're preaching about to what effect will we say your Christian experiences. I want you to understand that Chris Christmas is actually celebrated all over the world by believers and non believers so it brings us to the point that humanity are compromised this fact that it print a king was born on this very day. Are you with me? So I want to be this carrier of light. This carry us over this very good news to how our nearest is that you will be witnesses to me. In terms of MPA, so meaning it will start from your immediate neighborhood. And then the Bible says to the atomos path of the earth before the gospel even leaving you to one. The world beyond it has to start from your immediate environment. I'm talking about from your family from your neighbors, my God. You're a Christian four years, and not this feeling you impact in and around where you are staying all your environment then what are you doing? I trusted the lord will help us. One of us 26. The babels is now in the 6 months. The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to envision it to a man whose name was Joseph. Of the House of David, the virgin's name was Mary. And having the angel said to her rejoice, highly favored one, the lord is with thee. Blessed are you among the women? But when she saw him, she was troubled at his same and considered what manner of greeting was this. Then the angel said to her, do not be afraid, Mary. For you. You have found favor with God and behold you will receive in your room and bring forth the sun. I shall call his name, Jesus. I shall call his name, Jesus. In the army or in the Hebrew, the root Hebrew word for disease is so easier. He will be great and he will be called the son of the highest and the lord called you give him the control of his father deal. And he will over the house of Jacob forever. And of his kingdom, there will be more end. Then Mary said to the angel how can this be seen? I know no one. So this was a very clear example of the claim indication of the process of anxiety in a letter that a virgin will consist of. He said I knew movement. This is something that truly is I was right about what he saw. He said, I know, I love it. Mary mean, Roman. And an angel has said and said to her, the Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the highest shadow you, therefore, all so that only one who is to be born will be called the son of God, so this was a clear proof that this was the workings of God. And for God to actually accomplish that witty he proposed inside had to pass through and the wool bottle might be so that he some can be present. Now Jesus Christ was a 100% human on the percent of spirit. So now, indeed, at least relative, has also conceived a son in her this was still the information given to her by the spirit. By the angels sorry. And it's now in the 6 months of her. Who was called Byron for with God nothing is impossible. So this is the angels tell it to cat Mary. Then Mary said, behold, the mid 7th of the lord let it be a coding to your work and the injured departed from her. So now Mary arose in those days, I went into the yo country with east to a city of Judah, an entire house of zacharias in greeted laser and it happened when Elizabeth had the Britons of Mary that the beep lived in how old and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, my God. You can see the interaction. Then she spoke out in a log voice and said, blessed are you a moot? And blessed it a fruit of your blood. But why is this granted to me that the mood of the lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greatest sounded in my ears, the people leaped in my wolf joy, blessed is she who believed for there will be fulfillment of those things which we taught from the lord and Mary said my soul magnifies alone and my spirit rejoiced in God my savior for he has regarded the lowest hit of his mid 7th for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessed by God for he who is mighty has done great things for me and wholly is his name. And his messy is on those who feel you from generation to generation. He has shown strength in his arms. He has scattered the proud in the machinations of the heart. He has put down the mighty from the truth and exhorted the newly he has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his 7th Israel in remembrance of his mercy, my God. As he spoke to our fathers to Abraham and to Mary remain with her for about three months and return to a house. It was actually necessary that we could because I wanted to understand how these things happen. So there was a prophecy and then you were severely I don't want to take us down the passage of the scripture. How that distinct came to manifest and how this prophesies after now I want to check our police in a Micah chapter. My cut up to 5 countries get very quickly my catch up to 5 first two. I'm just talking about how the professors actually actually came to manifestation that over truth of truth. Of a truth, a veggie was to conceive. So my car chopped. My God, chopped to 5. My God, it's up to 5 as two recorded 5 two. So the battle is a blood dumpling in ephrata. Yet out of these are comfort onto me. That is the ruler in Israel. Who's going for the heartbeat for old? From everlasting, I'm calling. So therefore, he will give them altered traveling and thoughtful tender remnant of the British are taught on the drill of Israel. And he shall stand and fit in this trend of the lord in the majesty of the name of the lord, his God, and this allowed for now shall he be great onto the ends of the head. And this man shall be the peace. Oh my God, are we together? Is my sharpie with a piece? This is still talking about Jesus Christ, okay? So I just wanted you to understand how that's the prophecies of this many prophets came to pass in one vessel indices. And if you actually read further, you will see how. How that Jesus Christ what I need to take. The baby says, and it came to pass and do this that. It decreasing, you know, Jesus Christ was actually born. And it came. And king certainly got jealous. I didn't want to do to kill Jesus. You could see how that angel accurately precisely preserved the life of Jesus Christ by giving instructions to Joseph to flee and then at a point to come back on. You know, I just want you to understand that this was a

"What it's like for you to join us. We're heading down to the Gundy house for the advent calendar. Oh, how excellent. Do you go together? Thank goodness there's a loud bell to lead the way. Let's see how it looks and companions. As we arrive at the Gundy house on Bethlehem's Main Street, Santa passes by in a horse drawn carriage, which for some reason prompts a pretty earnest discussion among the gathering crowd about the name of Santa Claus's wife. Somebody who claims to have done the research insists it's either Carol or Jessica. Then after a few eager residents have had a good turn ringing the loud bell, the proceedings get underway. Led by a local theater group. Good tidings. We bring to you and your kin. And now if your fanciest all with joining us in singing, we wish you a Merry Christmas. We wish you a very Christmas. Okay, there's a little tower link. And then the proceedings get underway. For the next 13 days, this door will represent the spirit of Christmas. It's just like the advent calendar, you might have received as a child. But here in Bethlehem, we take celebrating the holiday season to the next level. Rather than chocolate or a little picture, our local merchants and partners have a special treat for you. Tonight is door number 11. Now all we need is one brave audience member. Look at that. That was easy to come knock on this door. How many knocks will it be? So there will be three knocks count us in. Out pop the proprietors and staff of a local coffee shop chain that's been quickly spreading throughout the United States. Welcome everyone. We are coming to you from video Bose coffee. We are a coffee shop that is run almost primarily by individuals with disabilities. Yay. Yay. There's more caroling and merriment and even tears in the eyes of some of the residents as the younger disabled staff members perform for the group. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Named by a group of ones persecuted early Protestant Christians known as the moravians, who initially came from modern day Czech Republic, then moved to Germany, and eventually settled here in Pennsylvania back in the 1700s. And Bethlehem is really double down on its holiday appropriate name. Ever since the 1930s, it's advertised itself as Christmas city USA. It kind of grew into a tradition in 1937 and of course coming up with the name Christmas city USA, the post office used to have a seal where you would be able to get your Christmas card postmarked. This is Laurie and wuki. President and CEO of historic Bethlehem museums and sites. And it's not just in the depression era that Bethlehem was looking for business and needing to reinvent itself. Back in the 1990s, saw the closure of Bethlehem steel. Once the second largest steel manufacturer in the United States. The community obviously went through some hard times after the depression and they were trying to be creative and there's no doubt after Bethlehem steel closed that the community again embraced preservation efforts by creating a sense of place. Now, regular listeners of monocle 24 will know that I am half Austrian half American, and when it comes to my Austrian side, I mean, let's face it. It's really hard to outdo us when it comes to Christmas markets and celebrating the holidays. But that said, I have to admit that Bethlehem's Christmas city name is more than just a gimmick to bring in the tourism dollars. This city does seem to make a special effort along its historic church street. You'll find candlelights in every window. There's a star of Bethlehem on a hill in the distance. And there's a special type of nativity scene known as a put in the churches. Beyond that, people here really do seem to feel a sense of responsibility to live up to that Christmas city name. There's a spirit in this city that I don't feel you can get anywhere else. I mean, Bethlehem was founded on Christmas Eve in 1741 on the site where the hotels now sitting. This is Kelly Reynolds, director of guest experience at historic hotel Bethlehem, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and has the distinction of being voted America's best historic hotel for the past two years by readers of USA Today. We are Christmas city USA, and I think if you try to take advantage of that from our perspective, I think we would get punished. I think there would be punishment at the other end of that Christmas candy stick. So we take it very seriously. There is of course also a Christmas market here in Bethlehem, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is set against the backdrop of the former steel plant, which is lit up in red and purple on December nights on the south side of the city. Vendors here sell lots of local stuff. Decorations and goods from manufacturers, mostly within the state of Pennsylvania. We are known for all of our Christmas cookies. We also have ornaments every kind that you could possibly think of. We also have Christmas books and toys. This is Carol king, retail manager at the moravian book shop. The oldest continuously operating bookstore in the United States. We just love Christmas here. I mean, we just absolutely, I love it. I love it, especially when it was snowing. Hi guys, how are you? Merry Christmas, but yeah, people do come in to our store because of our history. And beyond the business side, while visiting Europeans often like to make fun of American cities that label themselves historic, there really is a lot of history here in Bethlehem, too. In fact, the city is spearheading an effort to become a World Heritage Site, linking Bethlehem to some of its partner cities with moravian populations back in Europe. Here's Laurie Ann woke again. If you were to look at a photograph of Christian spelled in Denmark, it looks very similar to historic Bethlehem and church street. If you look at photographs of harren hoot in Germany, you'd see the same similarities. And so this sense of town planning is really at the forefront and we hope that that journey is going to recognize the ingenuity of the moravian community and the mission work throughout the world. But aside from the history and attractions, if you talk to people around the town, the holidays are really just a time where the whole city sort of comes together. That quintessentially American thing. That sense of community that makes a city a city, after all. And it just might be what gives Bethlehem, Pennsylvania,

"Sonia story time podcast. So on my storytelling podcast, it's not gonna be too crowded today. It's actually gonna be Christmas. Because in a couple of days Sunday is Christmas. So I know last year I did a whole Christmas party. We had a goal for Christmas. What gets the gifts for Christmas? We're gonna eat that for Christmas. What was my favorite Christmas? I didn't do what was my worst Christmas because I didn't want you know to put that out there, but because I didn't put that out there, I got really sick on Christmas and it became one of my worst Christmas. Like blushing was one of my worst Christmas. So, and I felt because I didn't tell about my worst Christmas. That's why it happened. I know that sound crazy, but I really felt like that's why it happened because I didn't tell the worst Christmas I had had. So one of the worst Christmas I had was. I had went to work. I got off home. And the reason I'm telling y'all is it's because, you know, right now I see a lot of people, they just not into the spirit. They not into the Christmas spirit. I think right now we all should be into the spirits. You know, so much is going on. And I know last year all I talked about all the good things, all the good things about Christmas. So on the reason why I'm actually telling young is because. I want everyone to actually enjoy this Christmas. I don't want it to be a bad Christmas. So anyway, I got off of work. I came home. At the time I expected my ex-husband, my kids, my mom, and my brothers to be there. So my bae, my BFF, daisy, I picked me up. She bought me home 'cause she was like, oh, she wanted to see it was the house decorated for Christmas because then she was gonna go home, because she's a great baker and decorate her house. So she picks me up. She brings me home. When I get home, there is nobody there. So I first I thought they all had just went out maybe Christmas shopping, but then I thought like I know my mother had already more gifts and me home was supposed to wrap them. And then me and my ex-husband we were supposed to put the decorations up. We already had put the tree up, but we supposed to pick the decorations up for the house. But instead, I get there. Waiting, me and her sitting on my in the house, we had stairs, so we were sitting on the steamers and she's like, well, where everybody at, mama said, I don't know, maybe they went out for a little while they'd be back. So time passes I call my sister and I'm like, what do you do for Christmas and she was telling me what she was doing for Christmas and then she said, oh, why didn't it come with everybody else up here? So I was like, what do you mean? She said, everybody else is up here. I said, what do you mean they up there? She said, yeah, they came up here. So I'm like, well, no one told me that they were coming up there. So I wind up being in family lonely at Christmas. And elf is blue Christmas. Was playing it on the radio. So I wind up actually crying in because I was like, I felt like being just so alone. And because the house was

"A Christmas story. I mean, it's not like a Christmas story. I'm not ripping off the Christmas story. It's a story in the generic sense. And I know it's not gonna be a classic. It's not a Christmas Carol, the night before Christmas, the Grinch that stole Christmas. I have no illusions, but you've heard all of those stories, and I really wanted something with some surprises. Something fresh and new, and so I sat down and cranked this out. You may love it. You may hate it, but I'm gonna offer it up to you, runs about 30 minutes. And so you'll want to block out some uninterrupted time. If you want to take this journey with me. Anyway, that's coming up in just a few minutes. People are often interested that an atheist activist on an atheist show enjoys Christmas. Some devout Christians who insist that the holiday belongs exclusively to them, you know, they point at me and say, aha. You are using the word Christ in Christmas. And I always look back at them and say, you are using the word Thor in Thursday. What is it like 9 different holidays in the December and January months. We see Fox News and all the politicians and they're talking again about the war on Christmas they want to cancel Christmas they're trying to take away Jesus, the baby Jesus and Christmas and you and I are just laughing our asses off. I'm sorry. If I walk up to somebody or they walk up to me and the words happy holidays are used, how does this kill God? How does it rob you of your right to say, Mary Christmas? And are you paying attention because he then infidel liberal evil people like me are walking around for the entire freaking month of December and we're wishing people a Merry Christmas? Have a Merry Christmas? I say it on the show. Have a Merry Christmas. Because that's what the holiday is called. I encourage people to celebrate if they want to not celebrate if they don't once. And of course, we've said before that the best things about Christmas have nothing to do with Jesus. I mean, we've got the nativity scenes, you know? My favorite are the drive-through nativity scenes. You ever done one of those? So they take actors and they put them out in the cold and they're all dressed up and ready to act and it's Mary and Joseph and there's a little probably a little doll plastic Jesus in the manger that they pick up and hug and hold up to the sky like Simba. Which Jesus, you know, the circle of life. And sometimes they get live animals. Oh, look, it's a camel. Or a donkey, and then they put that in the advertising campaign. Live nativity with live animals. And to add to the sense of realism, this supposed event which happened 2000 years ago has a road next to it where people drive by in their vehicles, their gas guzzling cars, and they roll down the windows, and they watch this thing play out from the driver and passenger and rear seats of their cars. Sometimes they get in the backs of pickups. They just, hey kids, we're going to see the live nativity and they all get in there and they drive around. But most of the time, I think the best stuff about Christmas is the other stuff, you know, Santa and gifts in the reindeer, that's always a fun story. I think it's a lot more fun than the Christ myth. You know, music. I even enjoy some religious Christmas songs. Which blows some people's minds. I love the melody of oh holy night. I just love the way that song sounds. It is beautiful to me. I don't believe there was a literal holy night, right? But the song to me is beautiful, so I love it for what it is. That blows some people's minds. But Christmas music across the board, a Holly jolly Christmas with beryl Ives and and white Christmas Bing Crosby, some people actually like Mariah Carey, all I want for Christmas, I don't think I've actually met anyone in out in the wild who likes that song. But I mean, you know, it's poppy. It's like the most popular Christmas song in the world for some reason. But you know, that kind of stuff. The food and the and the family time and making memories and cracking open the presents to see what's inside and better yet watching someone else open a gift that you have given them and the hugs and the laughter and the memories that's Christmas, right? That's the good stuff. You don't need a baby Jean. Do you enjoy the gage stuff about Christmas? I think that's fair. Okay. And for that reason, I have gotten into the spirit, which is weird for me because I get really cynical about all the commercialization and the marketing and the retail. I think it's the fact that everything is just too freaking perfect. It's too perfect.

"Be on? But before the Victorian era, people wrap their gifts and paper. And you can do that paper and string. And that's beautiful too. Let me see what else we're gonna do. Okay, you know what's lovely, something that they do, they used to do in the past. If you're out, if you don't have anything in your own yard, I used to live in a place where I had an evergreen tree. But you can go out and clip some of the evergreen off, bring it into your house, but you can go to all the places where they're selling Christmas trees and garden, see if they have any laying around. Something that they might consider that they're not selling and just pick up a few sprigs of the of the of the evergreen tree and see if you can bring some of that into your house. Hey, see, if you can find a. Mistletoe. Okay, missile. You have to be careful with that mistletoe. It's not anything you can eat, but you can hang some mistletoe if you can find it. So just go ahead and take a look at that. So it would be nice to have something fresh in your house and you know if you can find some point setter and put that in your house, don't forget your candies. If you can find them, I understand they might be some difficulty with the finding any Christmas decorations or candies, but if you can do that, also candles, if you have some candles, you can put your candles out, that will be very, very nice. You just have to make sure you keep track of your candles and you know you have to be careful where you place your candles and you shouldn't have your candles burning overnight. They should be monitored. Also, if you have any difficult with any difficulty, finding a tree skirt, don't forget, you can use a sheet. Are any other fabric that you like for your tree skirt? And you can just make that as beautiful as you want. And. Let me see what else what other tips I have. For you today you know what I always did. I always used to if you have any cards from past christmases, a great Christmas decoration is to get your all your previous Christmas cards together if you have some string you can just straying along a little rope across the wall and just you know however you want to put that and just place your Christmas cards there are just sit all your Christmas cards out. On a table, the beauty of the different Christmas cards really make a very, very nice decoration, okay? And let's see. Don't forget to recycle afterwards. If you don't keep your, if you have an old tree, you're not keeping, don't forget to recycle all of your Christmas wrappings. Okay, you might have to bend those boxes or rip those boxes up, but don't forget to put that all of those Christmas papers and boxes in your recycle bin, okay? Just make sure they're small enough. Get them in there. If they can't fit in there for the next pickup, just put them in a bag, wait. Wait for that recycle bin to be dumped and make sure you put your papers. There's a lot of recyclable things coming out of people's houses the day after Christmas. Okay, so make sure that you recycle everything that's recyclable. Everything that package can be recycled all of that wrapping paper, okay? All of those boxes and plastics, they are recyclable. So make sure you do that. Okay, let's move on. "Merry Christmas. We are almost there. Today is going to be a Christmas themed broadcast, we need these beautiful moments because of all of the real life. Seriousness that we must deal with. And we're just gonna bypass that for today. Don't worry, we're gonna be right back on voter engagement and making sure that everybody makes voting their lifestyle because voting should not be thought of as a burden it should be something we celebrate. Hey, let's talk about our Christmas Eve to do list. That my children are older now, my daughter's taking care of Christmas this year because I broke my ankle in three places, had surgery, and I'm still recovering. So she is having lots of fun. This is a tough year people at the same time, we are blessed. We could be a lot better off with the bill, better playing, that's my opinion. And I don't think people out there are spending their money on drugs or going hunting as senator Manchin has suggested. I don't know why people think that we Americans aren't working hard, and why we're the only country. Who have only received a marginalized amount of aid. I know we're tough, you know, I know we, you know, all of us we have this real killer. Backgrounds and everything, but come on, people. Give us a break here. So let's go ahead and talk about our Christmas Eve to do list. Okay, my kids always enjoyed preparing our Santa treat plate. So on Christmas Eve, you have to get that treat plate ready. Also get your kids to write Santa. A thank you note. And don't forget the reindeer treats. And you know, you and the kids can think of what the reindeers might like to eat, maybe if you nuts. They could have maybe some slices of apple. Something like that. You might still be wrapping your gifts. So you don't want to forget that. And you want to choose your family favorite Christmas movie and your family favorite Christmas music. And we just love right now. It's just wonderful. I mean, you can turn. On YouTube and find Christmas music. I mean, you've got your Spotify music, Amazon music. You may have some Christmas CDs. Hey, you may even have a few LPs. Our favorite, I just love all the Christmas music. I love Santa baby, of course, Mariah Carey. And our favorite movie is Scrooge. I love Scrooge to Christmas story. So we watched that over and over again, of course, Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. And we just love things like that. You can have a sing along when you're listening to your music, some I love hot chocolate and popcorn and I've always wanted to string a Garland of popcorn. I haven't been able to do it. I understand that you should let that popcorn sit for a couple of days, so if you want to string some popcorn, I've heard people stringing popcorn and cranberries together, dried cranberries. You need to let that popcorn sit for a day. Let it become stale and they say it's easier to string. Also, you want to figure out what you're gonna do for Chris Christmas morning. Okay, and I have a recipe for you guys for some Christmas morning French toast. Hey, I love to keep track of Santa. So I'm sure it's gonna be something on YouTube. They may even be an app by having looked into that. So go ahead and take a look. Let's see if there's an app to track Santa. I'm definitely gonna take a look. Read your favorite Christmas bedtime story, whatever your kids choose. And don't forget, you want to FaceTime with your family and friends, send your Christmas texts, and also you might want to read the Christmas activity story. And you know, what you have to read the one for the kids, and you know, I always taught my kids to say happy birthday Jesus. And whatever your religion is, however you want to celebrate Christmas, you do that. You do you. That's the most important thing. Okay, now what are we gonna talk about? Let's talk about some tips for you guys. Okay, and a few ideals. Like I said about the popcorn for the Garland, just let it sit for a day to get stale. Oh, girls, you know, and ladies, men, boys and girls. Get some Christmas bags if you can find them. My daughter went Chris doing some Christmas shopping. She says it's the cupboards of bear as far as the Christmas wrappings and things like that. So do the best you can. But look, in the Victorian era, okay, let's say you get in a real pinch and you can't find your Christmas wrapping. Or you don't have enough rapping. Don't forget about brown paper. Okay? Or if you have something small enough, get you a sheet of white paper. And wrap that GIF and then just write on it, you know, you can write your little messages on it. There's plenty you can do. You can wrap your gifts. You can also wrap your gifts in cloth. Beautiful cloth. You can do that if things are tight. If for some reason, you don't find a wrapping paper. I always like to save the brown paper that comes in the packages from Amazon and other places like that. During the Victorian era, people wrapped things and beyond are asked, yeah, beyond the Victor, will I.

"I hope. You're in a festive mood today. Because we're talking about moroccan christmas. So get out your christmas plaid but put away that neigh tiffany scene because phyllis is going to throw you the party of a lifetime she sure. Is it season five episode eleven written by justin spitzer and directed by paul. Feek here is your summary as you said. Phyllis throws a moroccan themed. Christmas party which receives compliments from the majority of the group but some serious contempt from angela. She is not happy. Dwi runs a black market doll. Trade out of the office and meredith gets wasted and sets herself on fire. That's a doozy of a sentence quite a work party. Michael decides to hold an intervention demanding. Meredith get help for her alcoholism and then talk about a doozy of a work party. Oh phyllis spills the beans about angela and dwight in front of everyone everyone. She announces it to the whole bullpen. Except andy andy yeah dina sitar his goodbye as he's leaving broke my heart. We're getting ahead. We're getting a regard right fastback number one. This was the third christmas themed episode of the office. Yes it was season five. But only three christmas episodes why well the first season we didn't have one and then in season four. It was the writers strike. I know we missed a christmas party. It has been two years since we had a christmas party on the office. They were always some of my favorite episodes. So i was excited me too. I liked him because they were majority group scenes. Yes we were all together all the time. It was like a whole episode of conference room so lots of bits. The laughing we would just have the best time we would get loopy. We would but in the best way fast fac number two the inspiration for this episode i was able to get in touch with writer. Justin spitzer what just enough to say. He told me that they had had these two ideas rolling around for a really long time. The first one was the idea of moroccan christmas. They just loved the idea. That phillips had thrown that amazing. Goodbye party for toby And that maybe the success had gone to her head a little bit and she's gonna go big big theme. Yes they loved that this would piss angela off So this was like one card right. You know what the card probably said villas happy. Angela pissed christmas question mark. Why is your character always so angry on christmas. She's angry all the time but it really comes out. She has levels of anger sometimes. She's like suspicious bitch sometimes. She's happy bitch. She sad bitch and then christmas bitch is a whole different. Bish buckle in for christmas okay. So the other card they had on the wall for a really long time said meredith intervention. Okay so they decided to marry these two ideas remember when they did like. Michael has to fire someone on halloween while we're all dressed up. Yeah it's the same thing. Yes exactly just said that. A holiday party also seemed like a really good place for meredith to drink too much and set her hair on fire. Like there could be this sort of rock bottom me moment right and it's an event it's like a big event in everyone's there to witness it. Yes fast fact number three. I have a talking heads observation for this episode. Oh i'm so curious so as you re watch this episode. Take a note of the talking heads. Almost all of them are filmed from different angles than we normally would believe. There's only one where someone's seated in the traditional chair with the kind of party right. We're all over the office all over the office so this was not just because there was a party happening behind us..

And i our family didn't gadgetry cause you're going somewhere else and we didn't have time together train and we were coming back super late in january so we didn't have time dispose of it. Take care of it like you should end so the hat. Christmas tree on on the other side of the on on the east coast was our christmas tree And i think some people who also do that activity of going somewhere else. They got a christmas tree this year because out of their homes so they need their own tree so i think that's another reason that christmas trees got a boost in sales this year. Okay that's all. I'll be going over the christmas tree life cycle meaning on what it takes a christmas tree farm to To grow a christmas tree in terms of like cost in the process of it. And then i'm pulling to discussing How christmas trees are sold the revenue. What did do is unsold christmas. Trees revenue reducers Some revenue ideas. That i can That a christmas tree farm could use maybe The rockefeller center christmas tree. Which is a big thing in new york if you're not from the us Might opinion and this week. I'm going to be taking advantage of the fact that the what you hear on the podcast has released a rough draft of an article that i will rate or blog post. So i'm going to be about where i can expand in. You might hear a part two of this episode of the stuff that you can part two of lake the content that i might write about. Okay so let's get into it There are many types of christmas trees in the. They're they're five the five most common Christmas trees are phaser for scotch for ball sam for white pine norway spruce. Okay so the christmas tree life cycle okay so a tree starts out as a seed and that seed starts out at a nursery in the nursery grows the tree for three or four years. And then it's little stump. It's maybe like two to three feet. Maybe a foot legit safe.
