"In death. Let's go there with CBS military consultant retired US Army Colonel Jeffrey because land Colonel, it's good to talk to you again. Hey, Scott! Grady. William. What's your assessment now of the situation in Afghanistan, Colonel, and are we going to see more more evacuations escalate from there? It certainly seems like the evacuation is, in fact escalating or hitting its brand speed if you will. Yesterday. In the last 24 hours about 16,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan. By all nations that are involved 11,000 of those have been by the United States and this is currently going to be one of the largest airlifts in US military history and just sit back and imagine, and Scott we're doing this in the midst of a pandemic and massive humanitarian disaster was ongoing in Afghanistan as well as this ongoing conflict, so there seems to be a rhythm. It has now been established inside the airport. Where about 6500 people are now waiting being secured by about 6000 US military outside, Of course in Kabul, this is seen still have chaos. People trying to get the airport as the Taliban now. Is trying to establish a government in that particular said it. Yeah, I want to talk about that. If the Taliban gets on hinged in attacks, our troops there would they be fully able to defend themselves with those numbers? There's no doubt about those 6000 plus the young members about 1000 Bridge. None of us allies have forces President, I think would howsoever. This is very closed in area have been, huh? Because our international airport as the city has grown out around that particular airport, so it's an urban area, which make it very, very difficult. Furthermore, the United States will always bring in military airlift have had a number of fighter aircraft apply very low over Kabul and very low over that airport. I'm sure the reason that was done was to remind the Taliban the US maintain large scale. U. S air power so that there was an attack by the Taliban on U. S forces. They would certainly respond and we have been very clear that we would do that bigger worry, I think is perhaps a terrorist attack. It might occur with the crowds around the airport. Vehicle bomb, a sniper mortars, individual guys firing rockets and stuff like that which could emanate not only from the Taliban that perhaps some Isis Al Qaeda elements or even disaffected craft soldiers that were left over from the Afghan military and colonel. This decision the president has said to be facing today and whether to extend US troops in Afghanistan past August 31st. I would think there are awful lot of timelines inside that decision, which would would include you're getting our troops out in the end. Well, that's exactly right. Remember, every soldier we sent into it probably is one more American. We've got to get out of Kabul and 12,500 U. S military forces that are there right now Means to give it 20 or 30. C 17 loads of American soldiers. Marines, you gotta withdraw. Timeline seem to be at the president making need to make a decision today if we're going to stick with the 31st of August deadline so we can begin withdrawing phasing out that military force shrinking that security envelope until the last American withdraws. We have a real tough meeting. With the G seven counterparts, Brits, Germans, French and others, many of whom would like to see that period of time extended as they're trying to not only get their own nationals with Afghans and work for them out of the country, and on top of all that, of course, I just had a fascinating meeting. That occurred in little detail between the Taliban leader Abdul Ghani, Baradar and R. C I A director Bill Burns, who flew in the Kabul airport currently overnight. Meeting to discuss just this timeline I would imagine for the withdrawal. I was not aware of that. I'm so glad we talked about that. This morning. Let me tell you about Kirk Mellish. I've worked for Kirk for Just under 24 years during Atlanta's morning's news with Scott's late and Not only is he the best meteorologist ever just calm, cool collective. No matter what's going on, Mellish gives it to you straight. Um, but what you don't know is he is one of the funniest people on the planet. The stuff he used to say off air in the studio. I mean, legendary stuff. Longoria. He could literally retire from a meteorology career right now and do improv or stand up. Just super smart, Super funny and it was just the best. I mean, literally, the best meteorologist We're going to miss him, but I'm very happy. I can't He's been get up at three a.m. for 34 years. Not only that, Debra. He's like a surgeon. Meaning he's on call. So you might think. Oh, Mel, and she's got Sunday off. No. He's got to do the forecast on the weekends if breaking news weather pops up. He's got to jump in. So he's been like living on the edge of his seat for 34 years. Not only getting up at four in the morning, but being on call 24 7. So I I am so happy for him. And people like to hear that this is his choice. Trust me, he you know, I've done it for 24 years and I'm pulling my hair out. Maybe That's why he's going bald because the schedule maybe that's why I'm going bald because the schedule could be anyway. Kirk's phenomenal I'm so happy for him now, maybe we can hang out socially. He doesn't have to, You know, be on call of time. Uh, Godspeed. Kirk. You were fantastic. You're the best. Atlanta's gonna miss you. That being said Christina. Debra and I actually both know her very well. Yes, you probably more so than me. She was a producer Weather producer, Channel two. She's been on the show a bunch of times a great meteorologist and a great person. Yeah, And she was an intern with me and John Hessler over at another radio station. So we have We've done a lot of stuff on my friends list. Oh, yeah. So she could be number four. Yeah, We've been to concert together. We've cried together. Yeah. Yeah, So she's a really great meteorite, And sometimes I text her during the show about whether and she'll respond. Excellent. Yeah, so she she's a weather nerd, self proclaimed weather nerd, Um, and she's going to be great. And I know she's going to fill Kirk shoes admirably. They I mean, Deborah and I didn't weigh the scales in the hiring process. Is this a nationwide search, But we found Kirk's replacement. She's in Atlanta native graduated from Tech super Smart, Super cool and a weather nerd. So you're you'll be in good hands. Trust me, um, so you'll still have Atlanta radios only. Full time radio meteorologist right here on 95.5 WSB. So congrats to Kirk. Congrats to Christina. Do what do we call her? Chrissy Recall it, Christina. Thank her on air name will stay, Christine. Okay. All right. So what if we ever slip up and say, Chrissy? That's what we're talking about. Not Longoria's ex. No, That's a whole different there. That's a whole different thing wasn't so congrats, Mellish. I'm very happy for you, man. Enjoy their pension. Enjoy trips to Chicago to get your deep dish pizza. He wants to travel. He he wants to sleep in. And I don't blame him. Mellish if I would if I had his, you know his schedule I would sleep in for the first month. Yeah, absolutely. Is there such a thing as asleep, Cruz where they just cruise around the Mediterranean in a in a sleep number bed? Yeah. Yeah, just anyway, congrats. The Kirk and progress to Christina Edwards. She's fantastic. You are going to love her folks. And she might play Millennium math game from time to time. There you go. Right, Let's do star of the show longer. Oh, and now are you guys ready for the market? Arum starve the Kirk malice. Why not right? I mean, uh, Kirk's one star of the show before and he still agree with us through the end.
