"In the league this week, I would have beaten every other team, but the guy was playing, that's what happened to Scottie and Sam Burns. They both played good golf and stretches, San berns definitely played better golf than Scottie scheffler. Scottie was pretty off. He missed a lot of crucial putts. He did not play, he made way more mistakes than we're used to making. He had won notable shank in a somewhat of a crucial moment. So yeah, they were victims of circumstance, but when you're the number one golfer in the world, you make your own circumstances. So I'm inclined to give Scottie a mean Scottie Scottie got a D for me. And Sam Burns got a C minus. Holy cow, that's tough. That's harsh for Sam because he definitely played way better than that. I recognize that. I guess maybe let's go for a C and a D just, you know, sometimes the smartest kids in class, the teacher just grades them the harshest expectations factor in. The expectations for Adam Scott were kind of low because he was the oldest guy playing. He is the oldest guy on the international team. He's played. This was his tenth president's cup and frankly, we weren't really sure that he was always going to be here. We thought he might join live golf earlier this season. He made it clear to you and to the rest of the world that he's not ready to do that this week. But he also didn't play that great a golf. I think he had a pretty impassioned performance, maybe Saturday afternoon. But beyond that, does that Scott break the sea average mark for you? Yeah, I think he's just above it because God, he's just the best. I love Adam. Multiple reasons why he's just the best. He's just the best because this week we were admiring the way that Roger Federer is and everything about him. And in terms of just the way he carries himself and has a level of cool that is elevated above essentially everyone else in the sport Adam Scott is unmatched. So just as general vibe swagger walking around, definitely bumps him up a grade. Whether that's fair or not, I'm the greater Adam Scott went two and three. He rode cam Davis to an inspiring win at the end of Saturday afternoon's match. He did not have much of a showing against Patrick cantley. On Sunday, that was disappointing to see. And because of that, he's going to be a B minus for me. I would say that is generous, but I am not the greater here. Let's move on to a very random one. What would you grade Billy horses decision to not wear a hat? Oh, honestly. A for Billy horschel not wearing a hat because if Billy horschel wears a hat, you don't notice him this week. You get an occasional highlight of him flipping his putter, but otherwise he just disappears instead. People are like, man, this guy looks like Christian Bale in American psycho. Yeah. Oh, he looks like a total psychopath. Well, yeah, so for better or worse. But I mean, he looked like he looked like Patrick Bateman would be the characteristic looking for. Well, I think he also looked like Christian Bale and some other movie then. I haven't seen it. Anyway. He had a Christian Bale doesn't look any different. He's still the same person. Let's move on. You're giving him an a also generous. Your boy, max homa. A plus. What can you say? Four zero, incredibly well spoken, elevated the entire event delivered the signature moment for the U.S.

"Like, our next Iron Man is going to be in a dizzy plus show. I don't know how that's going to be. I don't know who to back. I don't know what horse. I'll tell you what made me start thinking about this same point that rob is making. The best part of Thor: Love and Thunder is Christian Bale, which is not that surprising when you heard that Christian Bale was cast in a movie because Christian bill's frequently the best thing in the movies that he's in, he really commits himself to gorilla God butcher, which I think is legitimately one of the best, if not the best villains that they've put together. Sadly, this villain is probably not coming back, and that might be why Christian Bale opted to participate. But he is doing something that many of the people that are currently key to the MCU are unable to do, really, which is that he is like this funnel of charisma. And the whole story kind of runs through him. The whole movie works because he is kind of a spine for it. The gags are great. I love Tessa Thompson, Chris Hemsworth is has certified what the Thor role is, but that movie would seem like a series of Super Bowl commercials, if not for Christian Bale. And I feel like they're missing something. And I wonder if because the tone of so many of these movies has gotten so winky and the one time when they tried to not make a winky movie, which was eternals, went so poorly that there's a little bit of a tone confusion, which is disallowing them from kind of discovering someone who's like, I'm fully committed to this character. Like I am Chris Evans, not doing any jokes. I am the earnest version of Steve Rogers that was conceived in the 1930s and you are getting someone who is unafraid to be the kind of charisma driven movie star that you need to drive a lot of these stories.

"Backgrounds that are the digital equivalent of spray painted van art, monsters that look like projections once team Thor gets to the shadow realm, where Christian bales justifiably bitter God butcher. The only one in Sue God's care about is themselves. Might as well be one of the witches in Joel cone's tragedy of Macbeth. So this is my vow. Oh, God swap die. Bail gets to actually emote, which gives him a few advantages over Chris Hemsworth's amiable but emotionally adolescent himbo, who's good at smashing things, but should really take his cues from Tessa Thompson's understated Valkyrie. My sensing feelings. At least when it comes to Jane. Well, you're right. The goofiness in Thor: Love and Thunder will doubtless be fine for fans, something marvel can take to the bank. As for suspense or thrills, grandeur, maybe a feeling that something might be in Thor mountable. That doesn't really seem to be the big guys thing anymore. I'm bob mandel. It's been an eventful week for basketball star Brittany griner, who's been held in Russia since February on drug charges. The White House said President Biden had spoken with her wife on Wednesday. "Some the color purple had the same kind of baggage, right? Spielberg was a big flashy director. He did the big movies, and this is a fairly big movie. I mean, it is a sweeping epic of a film, and a lot of people felt like a overdid it. That there was not as much nuance to the film, but a lot of directors are a lot of critics have said that it's underrated. And Jesus school and Roger Ebert both kind of said they liked the idea and they liked the story, but they didn't really feel like it got where it needed to go. But there was also a lot of interesting feedback about Christian Bale. I remember reading articles back then, you know, questioning, say, Christian Bale was remarkable in this film, and he is. But is it because he's a remarkable actor or because Spielberg had a reputation for being able to get really good performances out of kids. If you remember ET, I mean, they had some remarkable performance. Isn't there some good actors, but Drew Barrymore is really the only one who really had a huge career after ET. Henry Thomas is a good actor, but a lot of people were like, is it Spielberg? And was bail able to mimic what Spielberg was trying to tell him to do. And it turns out, you know, 30 years later, 30 plus years later, he really was a remarkable actor. 'cause he went on to be Batman, you know? He went on, he went on to be a really well regarded actor by the early 2000s. Yeah, and even though he's British, he has a terrific American accent he frequently plays American actors, not just in The Batman series, but there was hostiles and American psycho and what else? I mean, he's just done so many things. A younger role, he played Laurie in the Winona Ryder version of little women. Yes. I just saw that about a year ago or so. Ironically, ironically, he was a voice in Pocahontas..

"I'm not going to give you a full recap. Because there's a lot but basically batman in gordon tried to activate the last laugh. Call my cool idea. But batman laughs called batman and may batman lose faith in the city to the point where batman almost had the toxins almost full. Full control of batman right now okay and that activate last laugh protocol. That's right all right. So after called finished with batman finishes mainly lapsed looks for the final. Bruce wayne killed get so that'd be bad he crossed into another dimension. That's pretty cool. And set up a sniper to kill the final bruce wayne who's an elderly man that is about to accept an award for his service to gotham serving. No that'll be gone. He's batman he was just like he did act so cervo. No just access service. Right as batman who laughs about to pull the trigger. The elderly bruce vanishes just gone. Just magic you know okay. Both of you just go crazy with this one. What do y'all think y'all think happened to this. Bruce wayne okay okay. This is bruce wayne. This is old happen to vanish. Okay okay okay. So it's it's. It's old bruce wayne. But he's played by christian bale and it set in the prestige universe. And what happened. Was he figured out how the other guy did the trick. So he recreated the trick and teleported to another area okay. That's one i haven't done have bad. I'm pretty sure that didn't happen. Sam know things i think. It's pretty solid theory i. He's in the multi verse somehow. He's going back he's gonna be mentor. A young bruce wayne Somehow i dunno. Okay i have a serious night theory. Though i think batman who's turning into batman's who laughs took him okay there. We saw that. That bruce wayne was played by christian bale and prestige university. But no at this point at this point the toxin has almost completely taken over batman. But he believes that he has a way to beat the batman. New laugh so he does pull that for. How good job right. What do you think batmans plan to defeat. Batman who laughs is. He's going to get more serum and he's going to become an even stronger. Bamut left's dad. An antidote antidotes. Okay so batman informs about many laugh. Steady is transferred all the energy away from the dark metal in gotham except for the largest stash of underway manner. So this means that all the dark energy that was building up for last laugh. Protocol is now building up under wayne. Manor interesting so you. We're we're following sort of cape. Try it okay because that that could get confusing a couple people this having people being meaning me this allows batman to catch a glimpse of every single alternate bruce wayne in existence because he's so close to it. Kind of yeah. Yeah kind of. Yeah but batman also tells batman who laughs that he will summon the last bruce he needs if they meet at the manner in one hour. Who said that. Bruce wayne batman the one. That's turning okay. So do you think. The batman is fully given into the ceremony. Actually going to give the batman who laughs last bruce disarray. He's got some sort of trap. Yeah he's trick trickery. And it's it's it's a ration- put together by old batman he oil gonna walk in and and the good..

"Every now and then i come across a quote in maybe a movie that i'm watching or a book that i'm reading or possibly a podcast that i'm listening to the kind of stops me in my tracks and when that happens. I always paused from moment. Think about it a little bit and always make note of it and usually come back two months or weeks later. And that's exactly what happened with this quote that i got from the movie vice. Which is the story of vice president. Dick cheney and in this movie christian. Bale plays the character of dick cheney and he comes out with that quote the world is as you find it and i remember distinctly when i was watching it i it on because i really wanted to think about it because it struck me as a really powerful thing to say and as i explored i realized that to me i think it's an empowering comment on a couple of levels firstly i think it's empowering to understand that that's the way the world is. There's nothing i can necessarily do to change it. It's not my fault that it's like that but that's what it is. So now i'm free to move on within the framework that that's created and i think it's empowering on another level because it makes you hold yourself accountable in a way because you can bitch and moan all you like about the way the world is in the state of the nation but the reality is that's the way it is so what you need to do is work within that framework and just find a way to move forward so i think it's empowering on both those levels and that's why i think that statement really struck a chord with me so except that the world is as you find it. You don't have to change it you can if you want. You can try but regardless. There's no point complaining about it. you can do. All you like to work around it you can do. All you can to work within it but the realities the world is as you find it. And i think maybe for some people. They probably need to hear that right now. Because it's a pretty shitty world out there for a lot of people right now but the world is as we find it so. Let's do what we can

"This was in response to two crew members standing inside of 6 ft. From one another. It sounds like a short man who has a big power problem, sure, and its behavior that we've seen repeated in Hollywood a number of times, but usually it warrants on apology from these lunatics whenever you know, like Alec Alec Baldwin goes off the handle Mel Gibson. Uh, did you know variety of another earth? Oh, Christian Bale, of course, very prominently also flew off the handle all of these people in the past, you understand, Doctor, we're required to apologize, but his message is correct. According to the according to the liberal media, his message is correct and smug. George Clooney came to his defense, although he made sure to say that he wouldn't yell at crew members and quite with quite the same vitriol, But nevertheless that you know Tom Cruise his heart was in the right place to me. You know again, It's just a application of the famous double standard, and it reminded reminded me a lot of the Christian Bale tirade, which similarly you know was unwarranted. But the reaction to these two events I feel is wholly different. This is a Christian Bale's tirade. Hey, he's treated me worse than hell. That was sad Arised. I should add by family guy anyway, He's treated me worse than a jerk. Christian baled in. I want you off the shit you prick carry. No, don't just be sorry. Think for one second, I dropped a peanut M anamika rolled over here. I'm not gonna walk around and rip your lights down in the middle of a scene. Was the Christmas lights. "I I tried watching it one time when I was younger with my sister very rented it from Blockbuster. I thought that was and I just couldn't stay awake then tried watching it again with my sister and my dad and I just couldn't stay awake through it either and I'm just like this movie always puts me to sleep. I don't know why it was going to have to do it like straight up in the morning tomorrow to like get you to sit through. Yeah. Sure make me fall asleep again right after I wake up for me. It was ocean waves like one of the tiredest. Yep. Heard of that one ocean waves. That was the one that for me I got through it. I I didn't like it. I really didn't like do you mean Tales From Earthsea or so? It's it's a Ghibli movie called ocean waves. Oh, okay. So I don't think that one is not necessarily have to watch to like have seen them all know for sure. Like I think or that one's it's just one of the ones that that that's just kind of what part of their repertoire the ones that are that most people agree are consistent wage really good ones are the ones directed by yeah, Miyazaki, but in in my opinion as far as house moving council's go their house moving castle one, I love the design of the world. But other than that, I think the movie is really sluggish and there's not a lot that happens. Like there's no there's no like beginning middle and end to it. Like it has like the first part is the main girl going off to try and find a cure for your actual doing trying to find a cure. She just kind of leaves She's Gotta leaves because I'm old now, I think yeah old I'm a leaves eventually just leaves her home with like with no explanation then like Midway through the movie wage. If there's a war going on okay, nothing happens there like like how is flying over a battlefield he comes back and then then the then the then the new plot for the movie is fowl is like fixing the howls cursed because his heart is missing. There's no consistent Choice as to what is supposed to happen in that movie. I do like the the environment of the world. That's that's the strongest part of it and house. Like what is a demon mode or like his true form? It says it's one of the curse word fuck things. It's even worse for me because I don't I was interested because at the time when I saw it the Dark Knight was a big movie. Okay and Christian Bale is the English voice for how so he uses his palm like voice for like the the owl saying or whatever he is. I was going to give this movie a second chance, but no so it's it's really distracting and like it's one of the one of the low-wage Or Ghibli movies for me, please. How how to come down to go actually actually affected at a point that one of my favorite characters in all the Ghibli movies. I saw was in that movie for me was calcifer the little girl named Kelly Lambert hilarious. I think it's a really good character. I know like I love like you gotta know. I'm going to die. "From Chicago. This is film spotting. I'm Adam are and I'm Josh Larsen. Every magic trick consists of three parts first. Paul is cool. The pledge magician shows you sound olery columns bird or May that was Michael Cain right. We're done with the trip. That was Michael. Cain with some of the opening narration from Christopher Nolan's The prestige we revisit the directors fifth feature as part of our Nolan who've review this week in addition to that we're going to recommend to new films that recently came to the od the vast of night and the painter and the thief that more. Are you watching closely ahead on film spotting? Welcome to film spotting. Josh in an alternate timeline. We'd be spending this post Memorial Day weekend show singing the praises most likely of fast and furious nine. Oh Yeah I'm sure I'm sure we'd both be huge fans I haven't been keeping up with. What would have been released because it mostly depresses me. So this is to me after nine atom as the as the real fans would call it. Don't let Debbie here that that was supposed to come out because she'd probably forced me into a fast and furious marathon at home in memory of it instead. Of course we are talking about films new. Vod We're going to do a little golden brick spotting in this episode. Indeed there are two new films that meet the criteria for our golden brick or D- that's are overlooked or under unforeseen film of the year. Honor that we give to a mostly newer at least new to US filmmaker. We've both seen the new documentary the painter and the thief and I'm also going to recommend the vast of night that's a low budget sci-fi thriller that comes to Amazon Prime this weekend. Of course we're also pinning all our hopes of summer movie season on the theoretically opening tenant the latest from Christopher Nolan. Somehow the word theoretically there just seems so appropriate when talking about Christopher Nolan Anyway. That is still scheduled as of this recording anyway to come to theaters on July seventeenth seven. Seventeen chosen for being a gallon. Drome like the title of the film. Josh I'm sure that you knew that and we can trust. Christopher Nolan is GonNa try to be Oh so clever. Right yes now. A surprise. Our Own Nolan who've review which has revisiting all of Nolan's films is currently scheduled to wrap up in time for that July seventeen release otherwise all of this preparations going to be for naught. Joshua we need ten to get to the big screen in the meantime. We're going to get to his two thousand six film. The Prestige perform this feat in a manner and never before seen by yourselves or any other audience anywhere in the world. Odeon SELECTA is trees topnotch. You'd celebrate a real magician. Tries to weaver something you got something other. Magicians will scratch their heads over spoke. You have such a tweet as you're gonNA remember me for what happened. Just mentioned triggered overseen. I need to know how he does it. He has no. It's real every great. Magic trick consists of three acts. The first act is called the pledge every Great Christopher Nolan movie consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called the pledge. The filmmaker shows you something ordinary with his fifth feature set in late nineteenth century London. It's two rival. Magicians Hugh Jackman sophisticated. Showman. Robert in Jira and Christian Bale's committed professional Alfred. Borden the filmmaker shows you these characters. Perhaps he asks you to watch them to see if they are indeed real on altered normal but of course they probably aren't. The second is called the turn. The filmmaker takes these characters and makes them part of something. Extraordinary are period piece becomes gothic science fiction a meditation on the moral limits of science in pursuit of knowledge the consequences of obsession. Now you're looking for the secret but you won't find it because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You WANNA BE FOOLED. But you wouldn't clap yet because one of our magicians finally winning isn't enough. Our minds have to be blown. That's why every magic trick has a third act. The hardest part the part we call the prestige fairly early. In the film. Bordon's life Sarah played by Rebecca Hall reveals. He's going to be a father. He shows her the trick. That's going to put food on their table. A bullet catch which he performs for her to prove. It's safe like any of us. Observing great trick. She wants to know the secret and insist. She can't comfortably allow him to do it unless she understands the mechanics of it he relents she replies disappointedly once. You know it's so obvious Josh. Any rewatch of the prestige requires that you know the twist and equipped with that knowledge. It does all seem well pretty obvious like Sarah did that Lee disappointed or even more impressed with Nolan sleight of hand. I am really glad you asked this question because it helped me clarify a little bit. It helped me locate one of the reasons. Why and I'll stay at say at the front here. This is still topped here. Nolan for me really love this film. I think it's incredibly strong. But your question. Help me locate one of the reasons why. I might have liked it a little bit less this time around. And it's not so simple as knowing the twists or knowing the surprises because confession. I don't think I watched the prestigious since two thousand six and I had mostly forgotten how everything unfolded now. Yeah the hints and clues pieced together in advance in a way that I did not in. Oh six but it's different from not knowing anything so I was still pretty much in the dark as this movie began. So it's not just that I knew the answers. It's and I'm not sure it disappoints even in terms of its reveals but in comparison is something like as before we started recording. You had mentioned the six cents so comparison to something like that which we did revisit just last year And is another case where it it hugely depends on its reveals. Its twists turns. It surprises

'Parasite' winning best picture would make movies richer

"So the nine best picture nominees are of Ford. Vive Ferrari affordably. Ferrari is Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the story of Ford trying to build a car to beat Ferrari in the lemond race The Irishman when is the Martin Scorsese Film. which is on Netflix? That you might have heard. It's three hours long. Gioja Rabbit is TYCO I. T's story about a World War Two to that is the one with the where he plays a an imaginary Hitler. If you've heard a joker of course Joaquin Phoenix as the comic book character. Sort of little women which is little women you know Little Women Louisa May alcott and book adapted by Greta. GERWIG marriage story which is Noah Baumbach. Big divorce film with Adam driver and also Scarlett Johansson nineteen seventeen which is about two young men in World War One cent. On a very dangerous mission started by Sam Mendez once upon a time in Hollywood Hollywood. Is Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino's story about the Hollywood of the very late nineteen sixties and parasite which is Bongino Jin. Ho's Really Fascinating story about two families who come together in a very unexpected way Glenn Gimme a quick will win. Should win on best picture. I'd be happiest with parasite movie that just gets better and better. The more you think about it I'd be okay with little women or once upon a time like movies I'd be a little disappointed if it was Ford versus Ferrari for reasons you can hear more about in the full episode and if it is the joker I'll scream into a pillow Because I kinda hated that movie the oddsmakers have nineteen seventeen winning which is surprising to me. Because I like that movie but the best picture of the year really. It's Oscars sensitive from war movie and it's kind of a traditional Hollywood movie in some ways but then at the same time. It has the kind of showy element of having the you know. Made to look like one shot. I I will just go next and say I would pick parasite and you know. I'm going to stick with will win parasite because the last time. I had a tingling feeling that it was going to being upset. It was moonlight backed off at the last minute. So did the telecom. I robbed myself of an opportunity to look smarter than I am. So I'm going to say will win. Parasites should win parasite. I'm okay with nineteen seventeen. I think there is some lovely filmmaking there. I admire fire the accomplishment of it Bob. What do you think will win and should win? I think one thousand nine hundred will win because it's just everything seems to be driving that way it didn't start out that way. What's interesting sting is at the front runners? Initially were supposed to be Once upon a time in Hollywood and the two from from net flicks Irish marriage. I'm sorry Mayor Story and those have kind of disappeared from the conversation. I think it's safe to say none of those have a real strong shot anymore. I would love to see parasite win. Yeah Stephen Anything. I'm in somewhat of the same boat. I would be thrilled of parasite one I would be thrilled if a little women one. I love that movie so so much. I went on record in our resolutions and predictions show. I predicted addicted. That once upon a time in Hollywood was going to win best picture. It seemed like everything was coming together for The Oscars love movies about the magic of movie. Making it is is a movie about old Hollywood. You know who else is old Hollywood. Everyone who votes for the and so I felt so much like and also Quentin Tarantino. Not No he is an Oscars favourite but he typically get's nudged over two screenplay and then doesn't win best picture best director so I really felt like he had an enormous amount of momentum going going in but I agree that nine hundred seventeen seems to have kind of swooped in and picked it up and I. I really liked that movie a lot. I admire that movie a lot. I would be perfectly content content and satisfied to have it win best picture but this time next year it will take me thirty to forty five seconds to remember what won best picture unless it's parasite unless it's it's parasites will be talking about it for decades. Well I think I wrote about this a little bit if you subscribe to our newsletter which is at NPR dot org slash pop culture newsletter. I wrote about this last week but I do think there's a chance that will be parasite partly because the opening up of the best picture category. which originally was talked about as a way to bring? In kind of popular blockbusters that are also of quality. Got A lot of talk about the dark knight and things like that but it's actually done is bring in more smaller films and foreign right language films so eventually it's GonNa Happen. That one of them is GonNa win. Might as well be this one. I think it might be this year. I think people just like that movie. Yeah and the fact that the US preferential voting for this cat this particular story. COMP look it's way too complicated to get into here but basically what it means is if people liked parasite recite for example enough to what it number one number two or number three. It's got a better than average chance or second. Choices have a have a better than average less polarizing films. Do you better than the ones that everybody likes. Even if it's not their favorite

"Nominated for Best Picture by the critics choice awards and starring Matt Damon and Christian bale who is nominated for a golden globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor this is weekend edition from NPR news under the car seat of our good morning president trump was impeached this past week but the process hasn't yet move to the Senate amid a standoff that doesn't look like it will be resolved simply with holiday cheer but we are always cheered by having national political correspondent my allies and with this on the show Mara good morning happy holidays happy holidays so we have some news a broke overnight about to the issue the trump was impeached over yes just before midnight on Friday the administration turned over some documents because a federal court ordered them to it turns out that an outside nonprofit watchdog group the center for public integrity and brought a freedom of information act suit to get some of those documents that had been subpoenaed by Congress but the White House had been refusing to turn over and among other things one of them was a memo from an OMB official written just a couple hours after the conversation between Donald Trump in the Ukrainian president saying that the military age should be frozen and that the information about the free should be closely held in other words very few people should know about it and it turns out that that official is also one of the witnesses that Senate minority leader democratic leader Chuck Schumer has been asking Mitch McConnell to agree to call during a Senate trial so it puts the delay that Nancy Pelosi imposed on sending those articles of impeachment over to the Senate in a different light maybe the delay is gonna end up turning over some more information because there are other documents that are scheduled to be released in January so that might help the case in the Senate but where might or might not I might I might add a pending on what those documents say but what are we going to see in the Senate trial and and what's happening with that well we don't know yet what we know is that Nancy Pelosi has not yet sent over the articles and her in the ad management team who are going to be the impeachment managers for Senate trial she said she's waiting to find out what a child will look like and right now Majority Leader McConnell and and democratic leader shimmer are going back and forth about that as I said Schumer wants witnesses he's given a list of them people like John Bolten the former national security adviser the acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and this and be official the president originally had said he wanted witnesses to he wanted the whistleblower he wanted the bidens he wanted Adam Schiff but he's also said that he'll let McConnell make those decisions so McConnell doesn't want witnesses he said witnesses would be mutually assured destruction he wants a pretty quick trial so they're negotiating and we don't know yet exactly what a trial is gonna look like alright so in the days after the impeachment everyone wanted to the narrative to say one thing or another right up but what do we know about the politics of impeachment who did it help or hurt we don't know what the political end game of impeachment will be we have not seen any evidence of a big groundswell for impeachment or a big backlash to impeachment big majorities of Americans tell pollsters that they think what the president did was wrong when he asked a foreign leader to help him dig up dirt on a political rival but when it comes to whether the president should be impeached and removed by the Senate because of that the public is split right down the middle there has been a small uptick in the president's approval ratings could be his base is getting more enthusiastic maybe because of impeachment maybe also because he's done some other things that are popular like stopping the trade war with China and getting the new nafta agreement U. S. M. C. A. agreed to with Democrats in the house he made some concessions to them to get it up we do know that when it comes to being removed from the Senate removal is less popular in the battleground states than it is nationally but the bottom line is public opinion is stock hasn't moved much at all and it's split down the middle so Democrats and Republicans really can't say who is going to win politically from this do you think it says about the president's numbers on that we really haven't seen that much movement on impeachment well we haven't seen much remove in in the president's approval ratings at all is a very narrow trading range you could say he has a high floor in a low ceiling he kind of bounces.

Screen Actors Guild Reveals Award Nominees

"Welcome to the frame Steven Cuevas filling in for John Horn our broadcast was preempted today for special coverage of the presidential impeachment proceedings. But we bring you this special podcast addition to talk about the screen actors Guild Award nominations which were announced today and what better person to call on John Horn. WHO's on assignment assignment in New York? Hey John Hey Steven how are you. Okay so let's start with the nominees for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role. What do we got so the nominees? He's were Christian. Bale from Ford versus Ferrari Leonardo di Caprio for once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver from marriage story Joaquin Phoenix from joker car. And then probably the surprise in the category is turned Edgerton. Who Played Elton John and rocket man? If you start looking at who isn't in I think. Probably the most was notable exclusion as Robert Deniro for his lead role in the Irishman. He is getting a lifetime. Achievement Award Screen Actors Guild Award. So maybe that was part of the math but Jonathan Pryce was not nominated from two popes. Adam Sandler was not nominated from uncut gems and also left out of the competition was Antonio Banderas for pain and glory. Yeah it was a little surprised to see Bandera slept out you and I talked about that film and I think we agree that it was kind of career. Defining performance Let's move on to the lead actress. Category Who have their we have Cynthia Areso from? Harriet Scarlett Johansson from marriage story. The neon go from us. Charlie's therein Erin from bombshell and Renee Zellweger from Judy not a lot of surprises there. There were two women of color. The surprise I guess was that that search or Ronin was not nominated for little women some people thought Aquafina might have gotten in from the farewell. In fact little women did really badly today in the screen actors Guild L. Dominations and how about supporting role in the mail categories some pretty juicy performances. There are some really good pegues. Jamie Fox was nominated for Justice mercy. Tom Hanks Sup- Played Fred. Rogers and a Beautiful Day in the neighborhood. A couple of actors from the Irishman Al Pacino. And Joe Patchy and then Brad Pitt from once upon a time in Hollywood I said earlier. Jonathan Pryce was not nominated for playing Pope Francis in the two popes. Anthony Hopkins was not nominated for playing Pope Benedict in the two popes as well and this is also one of those weird categories in terms of. WHO's supporting and WHO's lead? It's one of those things where the studios can kind of say to the screen actors guild and the academy and other words as we think. This person is a lead this person's supporting I mean. They're two popes are mostly onscreen for the the same time. And you have Brad Pitt. Who is up for supporting actor? Leonardo DiCaprio for lead actor and once upon a time in Hollywood. I think he put a stop. Watch on it Leo. Joe Might have like twenty seconds or screen time. I don't know it feels like that's kind of tricky. Math and Tom Hanks's probably star of a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Even though he shares there's Screen time with another character again. The studios got to decide of the actors. Don't vote somebody in that category than they don't get nominated yes. Some people might be especially puzzled by the Tom. Hanks category for him winding up in the supporting actor. Can you explain that a little bit like why why that is well. I think if you look at that that film you can say that even though. It's a movie about Fred Rogers. It's really about the journalist whose life is transformed by meeting with Fred Rogers and something similar happened. In the supporting actress. Category according to Variety Kathy Bates is in this film by Clint Eastwood. Call Richard Jewel rule and she's been getting some awards attention in the supporting actress. Category but according to Variety Warner brothers mistakenly submitted fitted her as a lead actress for the screen actors Guild Awards and she didn't get nominated and she didn't get nominated for supporting actress because they had submitted committed error in probably the wrong category. Well who else do we have in the category of supporting actress. Another pretty strong category. Laura dern from marriage stories Scarlett Johansson another nomination for Joe Joe Rabbit this time and then to actors from bombshell Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie and finally Jennifer Lopez from Hustler's right. We have so we have Scarlett Johansson nominated for both lead and supporting actress rare A little bit but you know pretty. Good Year for Scarlett Johansson. I don't think you can fault any of those performances. I think they were both really strong. And you know she's playing opposite. Visit Adam driver. Who was nominated for marriage story? Joe Joe Rabbit as we're GONNA say in just a second got a little bit more attention as well so both nominations. I'd say we're served in both. Were in really good films. Let's finish up with the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Is it true that this winter is often a predictor for the Academy Award Best Picture winner in historically. Yes that has been true but if you look at the last two best picture winner shape of water and green book they weren't even even nominated for the Sag Ensemble Award so yes. It is a good thing to be nominated for in terms of Academy Awards because it's important to note the actress. Branch ranch is the biggest branch in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So what the actors do in the screen actors. Guild awards is often a good harbinger of what the Oscar Asker voters might do. So the nominees for on Samba were bombshell. Which I think is a little bit of a surprise? Good news for that film. The Irishman Joe Joe Rabbit once upon a time time in Hollywood and the real surprise in this category was parasite which is a Korean film. It's only the second foreign language film in Sag History. The other one one was life is beautiful to get a nomination for the ensemble award. I think it's really important for parasite. I think it's interesting. THAT MARRIAGE BRIDGE STORY WASN'T NOMINATED FOR ENSEMBLE. Neither was little women and so all the power seemed to be going to parasite right now and I would have to say say once upon a time in Hollywood and the Irishman well there you have it this year's screen actors Guild Award nominations in the film category. John you may resume get your New York theatre going. Thank you Steve. And I'll go do it right now

Joe Joe Rabbit Hollywood Harriet Scarlett Johansson Guild Award Fred Rogers Tom Hanks Jonathan Pryce Leonardo Di Caprio Elton John Adam Sandler New York Brad Pitt Academy Of Motion Picture Arts John Horn Guild L. Dominations Steven Cuevas Joe Patchy Robert Deniro Edgerton Joaquin Phoenix

"You say you saw that Ford versus Ferrari the other night at the show. I'M GONNA put my movie reputation on the line and saying that if if you don't don't love this movie if you don't think this is a great flick you can go take a hike or yeahs Eddie Shack say you can put an egg on your shoe and beat it. Is that what. He's some some line like that. That made me laugh. Great Flick all my God. And here's the thing made me laugh. Made me cry at had at all. It was an awesome movie long to two hours. Forty minutes right around there But I I will say for people who are into car racing NASCAR f-foreign kind of has a little bit of everything in there. I knew nothing going in like so the ending running is a is a little different to me having known nothing. I think if you don't know anything don't even glading. Just go in. Check out this movie and check out the Battle of Ford making a car. Harder can compete with Ferrari in f one holy Shit Matt Damon does an incredible job playing carroll shelby was this legendary Car Racer and Christian Bale plays and other awesome character. And it's just I can't say enough. I was blown away. I love the movie. I left thinking wow I could easily go see that again. "Movies about car racing sound like operas scored entirely for basso's and Ford V. Ferrari is no exception but it also has significant things to say about art V. E. commerce the cowboy ethic VI corporate caution and friendship V. everything else it's a new model of an old fashioned audience pleaser with wonderful performances by Christian bale and Matt Damon and a resonant sold to go with the smarts story grows out of a battle of corporate Titans in the nineteen sixties Henry for the second Titan bug birds he's played

"Ferrari releases. No, meme, November fifteenth later this year starring Christian bale Matt Damon believe it's based on a book and pretty highly anticipated I was curious what the reaction would be. Like we tweeted, the trailer reaction was huge automobile magnets. Henry Ford, and Lee is it coca I KoKo, yet dispatch a team of engineers and designers to build a car to race against Ferrari at the nineteen sixty six lemons, I guess, say it 'cause you bail LeMond is that makes more sense Christian bale as Ken miles, Matt Damon has Carroll Shelby. They're in it. They're the two big stars that took got people very excited on Twitter yesterday, and on Instagram like shit Damon bail on excited. James Mangold is directing. It's really just overall. This is first movie since Logan, by the way, overall just toward a force of people things you wanna see with this movie. It's like one of the first FOX things at Disney's releasing, well, actually like second or third because I've tarp FINA comes out this week, but very excited. I've other trailer was great got pretty I've for this one. This is the list of things. I'm excited for later this year. It looked anymore bettas of an old guy named in Carroll Shelby. No, that's that's up there. Yeah. Yeah. I thought great. I love Christian bale and his whatever accent. He wants to put on does, you know, he's from Britain. Well. Anyway, carry on. Yeah. I thought cool, I you know, I like cars. I'm not huge in a motor sports, but I you know, it'll be nice to seems like all these. To. I wanna call them period. Pieces like period type racing movies had have ended up in very good. Whether it's can we just talked about it. Rush Russia on race compete Anneke louder. Yeah. Nikki Lauda just passed away. I mean that that was really good. And this, this looks like that. And then was there, another one was at the cinema movie. I can't remember if that was a documentary or not, I seem to end up enjoying them.

"That. Couple Warner Brothers has confirmed that Robert Pattinson is the new Batman in the next, Batman franchise robber, Pat, Patterson giving light. Yes. Twilight fame, so you guys like that. I mean. No. I do we just is this, the thing where you just once the Batman franchise ends. You just pick it up with a new Batman and you go from there again readings like they're doing. Not even that it's just okay. We're going to redo the story now. And give you a new Batman. He just doesn't fit the Bruce, Wayne Batman like no stereotype. You know what I mean? Like I wanna see, like what's his name? He just did the no did it. But I'm saying new new guy. He just did. He just did pardon my take with big cat. It was in the van with and we were talking about Sean McVeigh. No, no. I know the I know the good looking guy. Yeah. The good looking guy Stephen Shammy, Steve Shammy. That's steve. Can you name the love can you name the actors joins company? It was about man. Michael keaton. Abed pledges then Aflac was Batman, Bill? Kilmer Val Kilmer was Batman. Yes. And the one. That's pretty much most of the modern ones. Yeah. Christian bale was awesome the night series. No doubt I absolutely love love, but you have to admit even though that was that was that, that three Zaka front. Thank you. Danny Lynch, fine, who Shemi still would be

"But do you think of patents patent as the new Batman? I saw this. I'm kind of down for it. What is that these economics, right? Yeah. Not your thing. I mean I, I like your right. Not my favorite, Robert Patterson. Who is in these twilight movies. Yes. Apparently, he's going to be the one that's going to be taking over from that. What's his name? Well, Ben Affleck in Africa. Yeah. Ben Affleck was the what happened someone went to bed African said, you just don't want to do this. They wanted a younger guy, I think. No, I think that that's part of it. He they wanted a younger guy and also he just wasn't working for them. You know it wasn't really been afflicted. He did it in two movies. The Justice league. It didn't work the first or second time you're out. They, they wanted to go younger than don't want. See you. Yeah. It really who wants that guy. Anyway. Then Aflac I mean he's a good actor to just, you know, sometimes you don't fit the role, right? And the thing is, if you don't fit the role, then you shouldn't get a second second shot at it didn't work. So then you're out. Let's see who do I like is the best Batman. Michael. Keaton was good. Christian bale was good. My favorite was, obviously, it wasn't the, the movie Batman, but the TV show, Adam. Adam west. Absolutely. I if I had to pick a live action when it's probably Michael Keaton for me. He's, he's my favorite. I like Batman and Batman because he was it wasn't. It wasn't the movie Batman. It wasn't a serious. It was very, very campy, if you watch the TV series Batman from the sixties, it was one of those shows that was made for a kids, but made for Delta's. Well, there were tongue in cheek secret double-entendres there were there were like a jokes or inside things that only would appeal to adults that would go over the kids heads. And let's face it. Adam west was actually pretty funny, even though he didn't mean to be the way he would deliver his lines. He was hilarious. So I don't think they try to capture that in the in the movies and the film. But and there were different directors to who is the Batman that had with a cod piece. So. What was that Clooney's? So it was the first Batman in terms of movies, anyway, was timber, and did two movies with Michael Keaton. Right. And then after that, I think there was a third movie that was with Val Kilmer, instead of Michael Keaton doing, like seven or eight Batman. Yes. And then after that George Clooney. I think two of them, Robin. Batman forever. And neither one of those is very good. Those are the ones that hit the nipples on the bat suit. That's Joel Schumacher. Batman. Yeah. They he succeeded. Was -cluded the gay Batman. Yeah, I think he definitely Clooney's come out and said he played him as a gay character. That's what he was written like to him. Schumacher. That's why that's why. And then and then I mentioned Christian bale. So Robert Pattinson. All right. Well, maybe I guess he'll do good. Yes. Seems like he's been he hasn't done a lot of big movies ever since the twilight one. So most people know him for that, but he's done a lot of good art house movies. Like smaller releases the not a lot of people get to see. And he's, he's a great actor, but he the brooding Batman, another Bruening Batman. So they got the dark

Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma

"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't know about best editing. The spider verse hairstyling best song song about best picture. Or did. We did that already songs. Best. The song. Okay. What are your choices? I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy. I have a couple of friends getting together to watch the show. I get it. I mean, if you watch I haven't seen all the movies. I wait to watch him on the Denver Broncos play. Year later used be all the movies. It'll be of several of these. Oh, I gave did your wife end up watching bohemian a couple times guide and really liked.

"And Roma is just one film that's up for best picture. But of course, there are many others. Well, there are and in fact, my brother asked me to his his his his businesses. He goes, please help me with the with the business. Oscar lottery who do you think's gonna win and the everything's pointing to green day winning best picture. And I think that the the awards are going to be fairly equally. Distributed. But either way I think it's going to be a good year for diversity for gender equality and also new independent stories vying with big budget, superheroes and foreign films and in terms of best actor best actress wou I think Christian bale will get best actor, and I think that Glenn Close. It's about time. She will probably get Pakistan slash she never had it before. She's been nominated a lot. Yeah. But she's an she's not hasn't won it. I mean, it's far as I know gosh. Now, I'm freaking out as far as I know. She hasn't. It's a very very strong diverse nominated pal pallet this year, and sashes stone and words daily was saying something very very interesting that we've never had such differences. We never had marvel films up for awards versus basically independent films. It's really quite amazing. The the one thing that Netflix has done for us. It's made people realize that we need more. More than just superheroes and more than just older stars. We need new stories.

Who Will Be the Next Batman?

"Did turn to the room to help me do research bughouse. Oh, great. And just went just wanna give you some of the names we thought, oh, this is fantastic. Because I feel like I'm coming little bit dry. We don't really care. I think maybe not quite a millennials like. Hi, other superintendent, Batman content. Michael Jordan came up again, Timothy Shalam came up at the decision was that he would make an implausible Batman. But a very interesting, Bruce, Wayne. Okay. Henry golden from crazy rotations who the first two words in that movie title referred, Bruce, Wayne, why not the third one? I really liked was Robert Pattinson because he's turned into a pretty interesting actor of I don't know are we gonna outsource Batman to the Brits Christian bale, did it. But if you wanna go bail patents than I have a suggestion for that. It's James badge Dale, and if you're talking about graduating, someone if you're talking about putting some what no I feel like this guy, speaking of deep state people been pushing James badge Dale on us for years. What your beds is the best movie of two thousand nineteen so far? What what's that the standoff? It's barrow creek starring briar patch co star Brian Guarany, Brian coast are Chris mulkey aware, it's just it's the best movie I've seen so far this year. It's it's fucking amazing. It's an incredible movie. If people have a chance to check that is on I tunes. It is awesome. And Dan bad sale is is really really really good in it. I got two more quickly. Okay. So because I guess this is actually circles back to your point about who's next who stole vailable for franchise. Someone suggested Lucas hedges Ben is Batman. Right. Yeah. Okay. In the one I like most is less. Let's really time that you've the breast ring swollen. No. I think I think I'll know after has had a bigger when eighty swing in public entre snus in last year than Paul Dana. Who was just everyone thought he was just that guy from those run of movies where he was that guy from the sunshine in there will be blood in all of a sudden he's just just diesel in escape at any anymore.
