The World Is As You Find It

"Every now and then i come across a quote in maybe a movie that i'm watching or a book that i'm reading or possibly a podcast that i'm listening to the kind of stops me in my tracks and when that happens. I always paused from moment. Think about it a little bit and always make note of it and usually come back two months or weeks later. And that's exactly what happened with this quote that i got from the movie vice. Which is the story of vice president. Dick cheney and in this movie christian. Bale plays the character of dick cheney and he comes out with that quote the world is as you find it and i remember distinctly when i was watching it i it on because i really wanted to think about it because it struck me as a really powerful thing to say and as i explored i realized that to me i think it's an empowering comment on a couple of levels firstly i think it's empowering to understand that that's the way the world is. There's nothing i can necessarily do to change it. It's not my fault that it's like that but that's what it is. So now i'm free to move on within the framework that that's created and i think it's empowering on another level because it makes you hold yourself accountable in a way because you can bitch and moan all you like about the way the world is in the state of the nation but the reality is that's the way it is so what you need to do is work within that framework and just find a way to move forward so i think it's empowering on both those levels and that's why i think that statement really struck a chord with me so except that the world is as you find it. You don't have to change it you can if you want. You can try but regardless. There's no point complaining about it. you can do. All you like to work around it you can do. All you can to work within it but the realities the world is as you find it. And i think maybe for some people. They probably need to hear that right now. Because it's a pretty shitty world out there for a lot of people right now but the world is as we find it so. Let's do what we can

The Prestige Nolan

"From Chicago. This is film spotting. I'm Adam are and I'm Josh Larsen. Every magic trick consists of three parts first. Paul is cool. The pledge magician shows you sound olery columns bird or May that was Michael Cain right. We're done with the trip. That was Michael. Cain with some of the opening narration from Christopher Nolan's The prestige we revisit the directors fifth feature as part of our Nolan who've review this week in addition to that we're going to recommend to new films that recently came to the od the vast of night and the painter and the thief that more. Are you watching closely ahead on film spotting? Welcome to film spotting. Josh in an alternate timeline. We'd be spending this post Memorial Day weekend show singing the praises most likely of fast and furious nine. Oh Yeah I'm sure I'm sure we'd both be huge fans I haven't been keeping up with. What would have been released because it mostly depresses me. So this is to me after nine atom as the as the real fans would call it. Don't let Debbie here that that was supposed to come out because she'd probably forced me into a fast and furious marathon at home in memory of it instead. Of course we are talking about films new. Vod We're going to do a little golden brick spotting in this episode. Indeed there are two new films that meet the criteria for our golden brick or D- that's are overlooked or under unforeseen film of the year. Honor that we give to a mostly newer at least new to US filmmaker. We've both seen the new documentary the painter and the thief and I'm also going to recommend the vast of night that's a low budget sci-fi thriller that comes to Amazon Prime this weekend. Of course we're also pinning all our hopes of summer movie season on the theoretically opening tenant the latest from Christopher Nolan. Somehow the word theoretically there just seems so appropriate when talking about Christopher Nolan Anyway. That is still scheduled as of this recording anyway to come to theaters on July seventeenth seven. Seventeen chosen for being a gallon. Drome like the title of the film. Josh I'm sure that you knew that and we can trust. Christopher Nolan is GonNa try to be Oh so clever. Right yes now. A surprise. Our Own Nolan who've review which has revisiting all of Nolan's films is currently scheduled to wrap up in time for that July seventeen release otherwise all of this preparations going to be for naught. Joshua we need ten to get to the big screen in the meantime. We're going to get to his two thousand six film. The Prestige perform this feat in a manner and never before seen by yourselves or any other audience anywhere in the world. Odeon SELECTA is trees topnotch. You'd celebrate a real magician. Tries to weaver something you got something other. Magicians will scratch their heads over spoke. You have such a tweet as you're gonNA remember me for what happened. Just mentioned triggered overseen. I need to know how he does it. He has no. It's real every great. Magic trick consists of three acts. The first act is called the pledge every Great Christopher Nolan movie consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called the pledge. The filmmaker shows you something ordinary with his fifth feature set in late nineteenth century London. It's two rival. Magicians Hugh Jackman sophisticated. Showman. Robert in Jira and Christian Bale's committed professional Alfred. Borden the filmmaker shows you these characters. Perhaps he asks you to watch them to see if they are indeed real on altered normal but of course they probably aren't. The second is called the turn. The filmmaker takes these characters and makes them part of something. Extraordinary are period piece becomes gothic science fiction a meditation on the moral limits of science in pursuit of knowledge the consequences of obsession. Now you're looking for the secret but you won't find it because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You WANNA BE FOOLED. But you wouldn't clap yet because one of our magicians finally winning isn't enough. Our minds have to be blown. That's why every magic trick has a third act. The hardest part the part we call the prestige fairly early. In the film. Bordon's life Sarah played by Rebecca Hall reveals. He's going to be a father. He shows her the trick. That's going to put food on their table. A bullet catch which he performs for her to prove. It's safe like any of us. Observing great trick. She wants to know the secret and insist. She can't comfortably allow him to do it unless she understands the mechanics of it he relents she replies disappointedly once. You know it's so obvious Josh. Any rewatch of the prestige requires that you know the twist and equipped with that knowledge. It does all seem well pretty obvious like Sarah did that Lee disappointed or even more impressed with Nolan sleight of hand. I am really glad you asked this question because it helped me clarify a little bit. It helped me locate one of the reasons. Why and I'll stay at say at the front here. This is still topped here. Nolan for me really love this film. I think it's incredibly strong. But your question. Help me locate one of the reasons why. I might have liked it a little bit less this time around. And it's not so simple as knowing the twists or knowing the surprises because confession. I don't think I watched the prestigious since two thousand six and I had mostly forgotten how everything unfolded now. Yeah the hints and clues pieced together in advance in a way that I did not in. Oh six but it's different from not knowing anything so I was still pretty much in the dark as this movie began. So it's not just that I knew the answers. It's and I'm not sure it disappoints even in terms of its reveals but in comparison is something like as before we started recording. You had mentioned the six cents so comparison to something like that which we did revisit just last year And is another case where it it hugely depends on its reveals. Its twists turns. It surprises

'Parasite' winning best picture would make movies richer

"So the nine best picture nominees are of Ford. Vive Ferrari affordably. Ferrari is Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the story of Ford trying to build a car to beat Ferrari in the lemond race The Irishman when is the Martin Scorsese Film. which is on Netflix? That you might have heard. It's three hours long. Gioja Rabbit is TYCO I. T's story about a World War Two to that is the one with the where he plays a an imaginary Hitler. If you've heard a joker of course Joaquin Phoenix as the comic book character. Sort of little women which is little women you know Little Women Louisa May alcott and book adapted by Greta. GERWIG marriage story which is Noah Baumbach. Big divorce film with Adam driver and also Scarlett Johansson nineteen seventeen which is about two young men in World War One cent. On a very dangerous mission started by Sam Mendez once upon a time in Hollywood Hollywood. Is Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino's story about the Hollywood of the very late nineteen sixties and parasite which is Bongino Jin. Ho's Really Fascinating story about two families who come together in a very unexpected way Glenn Gimme a quick will win. Should win on best picture. I'd be happiest with parasite movie that just gets better and better. The more you think about it I'd be okay with little women or once upon a time like movies I'd be a little disappointed if it was Ford versus Ferrari for reasons you can hear more about in the full episode and if it is the joker I'll scream into a pillow Because I kinda hated that movie the oddsmakers have nineteen seventeen winning which is surprising to me. Because I like that movie but the best picture of the year really. It's Oscars sensitive from war movie and it's kind of a traditional Hollywood movie in some ways but then at the same time. It has the kind of showy element of having the you know. Made to look like one shot. I I will just go next and say I would pick parasite and you know. I'm going to stick with will win parasite because the last time. I had a tingling feeling that it was going to being upset. It was moonlight backed off at the last minute. So did the telecom. I robbed myself of an opportunity to look smarter than I am. So I'm going to say will win. Parasites should win parasite. I'm okay with nineteen seventeen. I think there is some lovely filmmaking there. I admire fire the accomplishment of it Bob. What do you think will win and should win? I think one thousand nine hundred will win because it's just everything seems to be driving that way it didn't start out that way. What's interesting sting is at the front runners? Initially were supposed to be Once upon a time in Hollywood and the two from from net flicks Irish marriage. I'm sorry Mayor Story and those have kind of disappeared from the conversation. I think it's safe to say none of those have a real strong shot anymore. I would love to see parasite win. Yeah Stephen Anything. I'm in somewhat of the same boat. I would be thrilled of parasite one I would be thrilled if a little women one. I love that movie so so much. I went on record in our resolutions and predictions show. I predicted addicted. That once upon a time in Hollywood was going to win best picture. It seemed like everything was coming together for The Oscars love movies about the magic of movie. Making it is is a movie about old Hollywood. You know who else is old Hollywood. Everyone who votes for the and so I felt so much like and also Quentin Tarantino. Not No he is an Oscars favourite but he typically get's nudged over two screenplay and then doesn't win best picture best director so I really felt like he had an enormous amount of momentum going going in but I agree that nine hundred seventeen seems to have kind of swooped in and picked it up and I. I really liked that movie a lot. I admire that movie a lot. I would be perfectly content content and satisfied to have it win best picture but this time next year it will take me thirty to forty five seconds to remember what won best picture unless it's parasite unless it's it's parasites will be talking about it for decades. Well I think I wrote about this a little bit if you subscribe to our newsletter which is at NPR dot org slash pop culture newsletter. I wrote about this last week but I do think there's a chance that will be parasite partly because the opening up of the best picture category. which originally was talked about as a way to bring? In kind of popular blockbusters that are also of quality. Got A lot of talk about the dark knight and things like that but it's actually done is bring in more smaller films and foreign right language films so eventually it's GonNa Happen. That one of them is GonNa win. Might as well be this one. I think it might be this year. I think people just like that movie. Yeah and the fact that the US preferential voting for this cat this particular story. COMP look it's way too complicated to get into here but basically what it means is if people liked parasite recite for example enough to what it number one number two or number three. It's got a better than average chance or second. Choices have a have a better than average less polarizing films. Do you better than the ones that everybody likes. Even if it's not their favorite

Screen Actors Guild Reveals Award Nominees

"Welcome to the frame Steven Cuevas filling in for John Horn our broadcast was preempted today for special coverage of the presidential impeachment proceedings. But we bring you this special podcast addition to talk about the screen actors Guild Award nominations which were announced today and what better person to call on John Horn. WHO's on assignment assignment in New York? Hey John Hey Steven how are you. Okay so let's start with the nominees for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role. What do we got so the nominees? He's were Christian. Bale from Ford versus Ferrari Leonardo di Caprio for once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver from marriage story Joaquin Phoenix from joker car. And then probably the surprise in the category is turned Edgerton. Who Played Elton John and rocket man? If you start looking at who isn't in I think. Probably the most was notable exclusion as Robert Deniro for his lead role in the Irishman. He is getting a lifetime. Achievement Award Screen Actors Guild Award. So maybe that was part of the math but Jonathan Pryce was not nominated from two popes. Adam Sandler was not nominated from uncut gems and also left out of the competition was Antonio Banderas for pain and glory. Yeah it was a little surprised to see Bandera slept out you and I talked about that film and I think we agree that it was kind of career. Defining performance Let's move on to the lead actress. Category Who have their we have Cynthia Areso from? Harriet Scarlett Johansson from marriage story. The neon go from us. Charlie's therein Erin from bombshell and Renee Zellweger from Judy not a lot of surprises there. There were two women of color. The surprise I guess was that that search or Ronin was not nominated for little women some people thought Aquafina might have gotten in from the farewell. In fact little women did really badly today in the screen actors Guild L. Dominations and how about supporting role in the mail categories some pretty juicy performances. There are some really good pegues. Jamie Fox was nominated for Justice mercy. Tom Hanks Sup- Played Fred. Rogers and a Beautiful Day in the neighborhood. A couple of actors from the Irishman Al Pacino. And Joe Patchy and then Brad Pitt from once upon a time in Hollywood I said earlier. Jonathan Pryce was not nominated for playing Pope Francis in the two popes. Anthony Hopkins was not nominated for playing Pope Benedict in the two popes as well and this is also one of those weird categories in terms of. WHO's supporting and WHO's lead? It's one of those things where the studios can kind of say to the screen actors guild and the academy and other words as we think. This person is a lead this person's supporting I mean. They're two popes are mostly onscreen for the the same time. And you have Brad Pitt. Who is up for supporting actor? Leonardo DiCaprio for lead actor and once upon a time in Hollywood. I think he put a stop. Watch on it Leo. Joe Might have like twenty seconds or screen time. I don't know it feels like that's kind of tricky. Math and Tom Hanks's probably star of a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Even though he shares there's Screen time with another character again. The studios got to decide of the actors. Don't vote somebody in that category than they don't get nominated yes. Some people might be especially puzzled by the Tom. Hanks category for him winding up in the supporting actor. Can you explain that a little bit like why why that is well. I think if you look at that that film you can say that even though. It's a movie about Fred Rogers. It's really about the journalist whose life is transformed by meeting with Fred Rogers and something similar happened. In the supporting actress. Category according to Variety Kathy Bates is in this film by Clint Eastwood. Call Richard Jewel rule and she's been getting some awards attention in the supporting actress. Category but according to Variety Warner brothers mistakenly submitted fitted her as a lead actress for the screen actors Guild Awards and she didn't get nominated and she didn't get nominated for supporting actress because they had submitted committed error in probably the wrong category. Well who else do we have in the category of supporting actress. Another pretty strong category. Laura dern from marriage stories Scarlett Johansson another nomination for Joe Joe Rabbit this time and then to actors from bombshell Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie and finally Jennifer Lopez from Hustler's right. We have so we have Scarlett Johansson nominated for both lead and supporting actress rare A little bit but you know pretty. Good Year for Scarlett Johansson. I don't think you can fault any of those performances. I think they were both really strong. And you know she's playing opposite. Visit Adam driver. Who was nominated for marriage story? Joe Joe Rabbit as we're GONNA say in just a second got a little bit more attention as well so both nominations. I'd say we're served in both. Were in really good films. Let's finish up with the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Is it true that this winter is often a predictor for the Academy Award Best Picture winner in historically. Yes that has been true but if you look at the last two best picture winner shape of water and green book they weren't even even nominated for the Sag Ensemble Award so yes. It is a good thing to be nominated for in terms of Academy Awards because it's important to note the actress. Branch ranch is the biggest branch in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So what the actors do in the screen actors. Guild awards is often a good harbinger of what the Oscar Asker voters might do. So the nominees for on Samba were bombshell. Which I think is a little bit of a surprise? Good news for that film. The Irishman Joe Joe Rabbit once upon a time time in Hollywood and the real surprise in this category was parasite which is a Korean film. It's only the second foreign language film in Sag History. The other one one was life is beautiful to get a nomination for the ensemble award. I think it's really important for parasite. I think it's interesting. THAT MARRIAGE BRIDGE STORY WASN'T NOMINATED FOR ENSEMBLE. Neither was little women and so all the power seemed to be going to parasite right now and I would have to say say once upon a time in Hollywood and the Irishman well there you have it this year's screen actors Guild Award nominations in the film category. John you may resume get your New York theatre going. Thank you Steve. And I'll go do it right now

Joe Joe Rabbit Hollywood Harriet Scarlett Johansson Guild Award Fred Rogers Tom Hanks Jonathan Pryce Leonardo Di Caprio Elton John Adam Sandler New York Brad Pitt Academy Of Motion Picture Arts John Horn Guild L. Dominations Steven Cuevas Joe Patchy Robert Deniro Edgerton Joaquin Phoenix

"Theaters Friday November fifteenth sought loved it done so many movies Logan three ten to huma which I enjoy so much. Wolverine girl interrupted. I forgot that that was you So good on you good to see again to see you again. I love the film. I had done a documentary on the film or the theme of the film and I'd also just finished one on Carroll Shelby so going in I was was worried that I knew too much. I knowing you're seeing it. I was worried that you knew much. The good news is I really don't know anything so I enjoy the hell out of this thing and I thought you know what you're trying to get you you try and get the details right of course but you're also trying to capture in a dramatic attic movie that you can't do as much in documentary is you're trying to recreate a feeling or a vibe or a tone you're trying to understand something about the personality these guys that that they might hide from a from documentary camera or something. They may not show when they're doing an interview. Like this trying to get in a way behind the mask What are they dealing with? You know what are they haunted by. What are they chasing? And there's so many interesting aspects to these characters obviously the cars are interesting but carroll shelby he's top notch racer in nineteen fifty nine winning Lemond an Aston Martin and suddenly finds out. He's got a heart condition. We never race again cannot get behind the wheel again right. What does that do? I mean you can only imagine if he were suddenly told that all that joy and adrenaline and excitement and obsession you have about something is suddenly redirected. And you can't do it anymore. Ever on a certain day and that he he had to re imagine his life on a day's notice and turned all that passion into building and designing and managing races. And that's so interesting. Then you take a cat like can miles. WHO SPENT HIS PRIME YEARS Fighting World War? Two as a tank engineer comes to this country still wants to be a driver there is also interesting. I'm not a big motor sports guy in that I learned it all watching and making this movie and watching all the research but can miles els is also an example of a day and age when when the drivers could also fix their own cars. You know that that these were people who understood dude who built the car where the people drove the car. Yeah you had to sort of where a couple of hats back. Then and a lot of those shelby guys has a guy named John Morton whose was a shelby driver and then he moved on with Pete Brock. Pete Brock built. The Daytona famously. Won The manufacturer's I championship is seen in the movies while these guys drove and built right there their own cars. And there's a romance to that I I mean I I wanna say it's better or worse. I think that as we all get more specialized there is something that were robbed of. which is that kind of renaissance man or woman of racing or anything that the people who build something start from zero and deliver it to the final destination? There's something romantic about that. That is Louis. Modern life has gone on. We get robbed of we. Don't we don't get to understand that kind of pride and yeah so when you talk to modern day race car drivers he says a gearhead and they're telling the driving f one car and I go. What's the displacement on the motor? And they don't know I don't know I might feeling like I get it. They're good at what they do but if there was a barbecue Q.. Join and it was run by a Vegan. I wouldn't go in on a guy who you know who knows. Listen live does he get tiredness. Own Supply yes. I want that and also the cars back then because I've talked a lot of these guys who race Aloma. Aw then and now and then it was a lot of about endurance reliability. Famously in the movie I won't give give it away but Phil Remington the designer engineer. extraordinaire comes up with a way to make the brakes lasts longer and Blah Blah Blah. They had to drive. I've interviewed Dan Gurney on this. They had to make those cars last now. The drive the car at ten tents for the whole race because everything synthetic and the cars are so durable computers work and everything and doing everything that they don't have to simultaneously race the car and sort of maintain the car. No it's it is so different now I mean what makes Lamont so interesting And was for me as I did. The research on the movie was then it is not a car is not a race that is all just as it was first created as a race. It wasn't only about winning. It was about surviving. It was it was. It's a racist old as you. Well know as the automobile itself and was a way of putting cars on a road and seeing who had built a vehicle that could would just stand that kind of usage that kind of test. A lot of what crosses the finish line. Element is not about people who have fallen into tenth or twentieth the position but usually about people who just fall away in the past. I think that's is true anymore but no and there was a strategy. I mean it. Send one guy out to be the rabbit right. Hopefully the other guy with chase them and break right in the that. That is the point. And then you have these cars. Because it's a dawning moment in car design the cars themselves e more personality because they're a little more lopsided you know they're now we've I've got no this kind of tipping point where they can with computer design and just experience. The cars are all pretty good all around. There was a time when you might have a car that was nimble. But but it wasn't it was it didn't have the talk that another car had you might have like. Gt Forty had all this power but what they were. They knew from the moment they had kind of put that engine in the forty. At least as I understand it they kind of knew they were faster than anyone else. They just didn't know if they can stop or turn so the the reality is each. Each car has such a unique personality. And and you get to see these these these racers and and shelby in the pits. And they're all and REMINGTON. They're all all dealing with the unique personality of the monster. They've created a Ferrari too in the sense that the Ferrari has its advantages and disadvantages the I notice a lot a lot of filming at Willow Springs which is a track. I'm very familiar with and I was thinking as I was watching hot. They're cool. I mean when we the shooting the guy is. I don't know how they don't sweat. I never know this about movie stars. What why what what they do to make the sweat never occur? We're shooting in one hundred and twenty degrees. And I you know I have obviously looked like a overheated lobster. Right clinging to a slice of watermelon but but the the shoot itself. You're you don't feel that you feel the joy of that. Well it is that it. I was transported back. It made me want to race and DR driving out for the weekend with a bunch of gear heads and tooling around one of these beautiful tracks. It's beautiful willow springs as I was watching the movie and I've done a professional transam race in vintage races and stuff there. I'd struck me that you didn't have to touch a thing. We very little because that places places and Change Nineteen fifty seven and it's thrilling because the real characters were making the movie about race there and they haven't touched a thing it is it is and what I love about it is it hasn't been turned into some Not Sean on kind of life right like the style. GIC thing rice just is what it was. 'cause it's not it's not been turned into some kind of touristy things no Marilyn Monroe Mannequin that grass. You shop or anything I it's it's just the place like it's been always. I know I was thrilled watching it. And I were talking Christian about out The car this bumped me and that bumped me the only thing the sensitive the entire film that bumped me is. There's a couple Bush shots where you're going the wrong way on spray. Yes yes was that in the later sequence when they're testing the car because that's we did intentionally. We like going the wrong direction but as like you're the only person in this theater that knows shop the racist going there now. I know there's a later sequence where they're testing other testing thing the GT forty when they ended up tying the yarn to it that we did shoot. I think we shot at going the wrong way and a couple of places the Trying to freshen up the shots figure figure when you were testing on the track you can drive any which way you want. Yeah it's it's such an amazing film and it's I was worried that I was going to love it But that America wasn't gonNA love it because they don't like cars than ever to worry of mine too. I'm glad this story. The story of can in his son in what happened can and this sort of tragedy Ken Miles after. I made my doc when I thought I was just making a doc about sort of Ferrari Murari versus Ford like the film and I realized Oak. Ken Miles this is the human story in this in this whole big. The big macro ness of the whole thing the microbes really can his son his wife and his tragedy. We'll also he was such a wonderful character actor. Everyone remembers him with such clarity and And the way his friendship intersected with the way he him in Shelby's friendship was so mutually beneficial. How they each needed each other in a way? Ken to be Carol's kind kind of driver his almost projection of himself behind the wheel and that can would never get a chance to drive. It wasn't for Carol because Ken was a handful. You know and that that to me was so interesting and then a lot of the relationships were interesting. I found Henry Ford the second really interesting. I mean the idea of being a legacy running this company. Roofer makes kind of slightly boring cars affordable cars for the working man. And then you have a guy like Enzo. WHO's much more of a maverick? No legacy created this company who makes unaffordable cars rumbles. No Man and and each man has something in on the corporate case of the corporate side. They each ban has something the other other wants. Ford wants to be cool for wants to be solvent awry you know and the And it's in so many ways the characters it extrapolates out of racing and becomes about all the decisions we make in life and the choices we can make about the tripe type of person we want to be the way we pursue our goals that that either bankrupt. US or enriches but we go. How did I get on this track making too in this boring shit and the and the all and the efforts to kind of change your track even Ford? I very moved by Henry Ford. He's trying to change it up. You know he's trying to and and one great scene where you know Matt's character. Shelby takes Henry for the second out for a drive. I always find it very moving because you suddenly realize this imperious kind of Intimidating executive is also really living in a bubble and it's kind of sad and never gets to taste on the ground level. What it is they do that act there has a tracy lattes yeah yeah he was fantastic? He's a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright as well but he's really actor yeah he's and The Guy Played Remington. Ray McKinnon. I thought was awesome as well. And it's He was in deadwood he. We created a great series for years. He's he's a great. He also is a great writer to Greeley Interesting Group of people. We gathered together and the way it was shot. Let's let's just magnificent. It looked so good. Great DP Fed Papa. MICO and we've worked together in five movies and We you know and and I've done a lot of commercials in my life and I didn't want the movie to look like a car commercial but I did want to be beautiful like A. There's a I wanted you to feel it as real like sometimes. Sometimes when you're shooting car commercials everything gets so creamy and beautiful. That every car looks obviously no one wants to see their car dirty right here. Part tired of the sexiness is the dirt. is the dust is the the sense That they're being used one of the interesting factoid. I know from other life making making other kinds of movies and also doing this. As you know a lot of the characters I met especially the willow spring southern California racing characters they knew George Lucas because he was a hot water and he would have out He would sleep on a lot of their couches and was at willow springs and all these places and and for those star wars fans part of the reason that all although spaceships even in the very first star Wars Malim Falcon. The X. Wing's look so soiled right house of George Lucas his experiences and drag racing and in racing and that that all that exhaust staining and all that stuff was was his influence of trying to kind of carry something like. Why is everything perfectly clean in outer? Space Brierley is unattractive the American graffiti great movie and Yeah Ryan Harrison Ford plays a drag racer with A. I'm fifty five. I think he's driving a Bell L. Landscape movie. If you haven't seen it a great soundtrack is it's an impossible to afford soundtrack now. So they're telling me to bring it home so so I'll heap.

Ford v Ferrari Demands a Drive to the Theater

"You say you saw that Ford versus Ferrari the other night at the show. I'M GONNA put my movie reputation on the line and saying that if if you don't don't love this movie if you don't think this is a great flick you can go take a hike or yeahs Eddie Shack say you can put an egg on your shoe and beat it. Is that what. He's some some line like that. That made me laugh. Great Flick all my God. And here's the thing made me laugh. Made me cry at had at all. It was an awesome movie long to two hours. Forty minutes right around there But I I will say for people who are into car racing NASCAR f-foreign kind of has a little bit of everything in there. I knew nothing going in like so the ending running is a is a little different to me having known nothing. I think if you don't know anything don't even glading. Just go in. Check out this movie and check out the Battle of Ford making a car. Harder can compete with Ferrari in f one holy Shit Matt Damon does an incredible job playing carroll shelby was this legendary Car Racer and Christian Bale plays and other awesome character. And it's just I can't say enough. I was blown away. I love the movie. I left thinking wow I could easily go see that again. I never ever see movies twice in the theater but not saying I will do that but I could with this one so check it out. I think you'll enjoy it.

"Movies about car racing sound like operas scored entirely for basso's and Ford V. Ferrari is no exception but it also has significant things to say about art V. E. commerce the cowboy ethic VI corporate caution and friendship V. everything else it's a new model of an old fashioned audience pleaser with wonderful performances by Christian bale and Matt Damon and a resonant sold to go with the smarts story grows out of a battle of corporate Titans in the nineteen sixties Henry for the second Titan bug birds he's played

"Off. Your first. Month wasn't the monce should we talk about the plot blackadder. We've kind of covered it does he wear a blackout and he in the finale would have been Nice Nice. If hemsworth had a white hat and black that would have been that would have been a clean sort of for me. This is such a leads and just gets a blank classic man ending to it is crazy that every man movie except for public enemy's basically the same ending where it's like. He's alive and he won but at you know now. What does he do right now? You're sort of like I just walked exactly right. You gotta just walk the Earth with the world against you Yeah Guy Walking into a guy walking through the door based. It's not looking at the camera yeah yeah I mean at the day we're recording this. The <hes> the Ford <hes> <hes> Ferrari trailer just came out yesterday so people be able to carbon date this episode recording and that was what he had his sort of biggest intended a follow up to black hat was announced. I think he was going to the console market with Christian Bale attach and they were going to try to get financing to make a big Ferrari Ari by OPEC with Christian Bale and I feel like a mangled <hes> doing it has completely kills that possibility right especially with Christian Bale is in this other movie that is so we're the Christian Bale isn't a movie with the Word Ferrari and the title as I understand it Christian Bale well because he would have been playing Enzo Ferrari and had to was going to have to gain weight or something like that Yeah Christian Bale was like let me at this like the like Sandwich Sandwich at the red giant bowl of pasta waiting for the contract to be signed pop tarts into that right never that Simpson's Simpson's trial so far with the ironic punishment department were homer has to go to hell where they just feed them donuts all the time and he's like chained into a chair and there's this loading the donuts into his mouth off yeah..

"Ferrari releases. No, meme, November fifteenth later this year starring Christian bale Matt Damon believe it's based on a book and pretty highly anticipated I was curious what the reaction would be. Like we tweeted, the trailer reaction was huge automobile magnets. Henry Ford, and Lee is it coca I KoKo, yet dispatch a team of engineers and designers to build a car to race against Ferrari at the nineteen sixty six lemons, I guess, say it 'cause you bail LeMond is that makes more sense Christian bale as Ken miles, Matt Damon has Carroll Shelby. They're in it. They're the two big stars that took got people very excited on Twitter yesterday, and on Instagram like shit Damon bail on excited. James Mangold is directing. It's really just overall. This is first movie since Logan, by the way, overall just toward a force of people things you wanna see with this movie. It's like one of the first FOX things at Disney's releasing, well, actually like second or third because I've tarp FINA comes out this week, but very excited. I've other trailer was great got pretty I've for this one. This is the list of things. I'm excited for later this year. It looked anymore bettas of an old guy named in Carroll Shelby. No, that's that's up there. Yeah. Yeah. I thought great. I love Christian bale and his whatever accent. He wants to put on does, you know, he's from Britain. Well. Anyway, carry on. Yeah. I thought cool, I you know, I like cars. I'm not huge in a motor sports, but I you know, it'll be nice to seems like all these. To. I wanna call them period. Pieces like period type racing movies had have ended up in very good. Whether it's can we just talked about it. Rush Russia on race compete Anneke louder. Yeah. Nikki Lauda just passed away. I mean. No. I do we just is this, the thing where you just once the Batman franchise ends. You just pick it up with a new Batman and you go from there again readings like they're doing. Not even that it's just okay. We're going to redo the story now. And give you a new Batman. He just doesn't fit the Bruce, Wayne Batman like no stereotype. You know what I mean? Like I wanna see, like what's his name? He just did the no did it. But I'm saying new new guy. He just did. He just did pardon my take with big cat. It was in the van with and we were talking about Sean McVeigh. No, no. I know the I know the good looking guy. Yeah. The good looking guy Stephen Shammy, Steve Shammy. That's steve. Can you name the love can you name the actors joins company? It was about man. Michael keaton. Abed pledges then Aflac was Batman, Bill? Kilmer Val Kilmer was Batman. Yes. And the one. "But do you think of patents patent as the new Batman? I saw this. I'm kind of down for it. What is that these economics, right? Yeah. Not your thing. I mean I, I like your right. Not my favorite, Robert Patterson. Who is in these twilight movies. Yes. Apparently, he's going to be the one that's going to be taking over from that. What's his name? Well, Ben Affleck in Africa. Yeah. Ben Affleck was the what happened someone went to bed African said, you just don't want to do this. They wanted a younger guy, I think. No, I think that that's part of it. He they wanted a younger guy and also he just wasn't working for them. You know it wasn't really been afflicted. He did it in two movies. The Justice league. It didn't work the first or second time you're out. They, they wanted to go younger than don't want. See you. Yeah. It really who wants that guy. Anyway. Then Aflac I mean he's a good actor to just, you know, sometimes you don't fit the role, right? And the thing is, if you don't fit the role, then you shouldn't get a second second shot at it didn't work. So then you're out. Let's see who do I like is the best Batman. Michael. Keaton was good. Christian bale was good. My favorite was, obviously, it wasn't the, the movie Batman, but the TV show, Adam. Adam west. Absolutely. I if I had to pick a live action when it's probably Michael Keaton for me. He's, he's my favorite. I like Batman and Batman because he was it wasn't. It wasn't the movie Batman. It wasn't a serious. It was very, very campy, if you watch the TV series Batman from the sixties, it was one of those shows that was made for a kids, but made for Delta's. Well, there were tongue in cheek secret double-entendres there were there were like a jokes or inside things that only would appeal to adults that would go over the kids heads. And let's face it. Adam west was actually pretty funny, even though he didn't mean to be the way he would deliver his lines. He was hilarious. So I don't think they try to capture that in the in the movies and the film. But and there were different directors to who is the Batman that had with a cod piece. So. What was that Clooney's? So it was the first Batman in terms of movies, anyway, was timber, and did two movies with Michael Keaton. Right. And then after that, I think there was a third movie that was with Val Kilmer, instead of Michael Keaton doing, like seven or eight Batman. Yes. And then after that George Clooney. I think two of them, Robin. Batman forever. And neither one of those is very good. Those are the ones that hit the nipples on the bat suit. That's Joel Schumacher. Batman. Yeah. They he succeeded. Was -cluded the gay Batman. Yeah, I think he definitely Clooney's come out and said he played him as a gay character. That's what he was written like to him. Schumacher. That's why that's why. And then and then I mentioned Christian bale. So Robert Pattinson. All right. Well, maybe I guess he'll do good. Yes. Seems like he's been he hasn't done a lot of big movies ever since the twilight one. So most people know him for that, but he's done a lot of good art house movies. Like smaller releases the not a lot of people get to see. And he's, he's a great actor, but he the brooding Batman, another Bruening Batman. So they got the dark

"You've got the time. Here's a personal anecdote for me. I like. Throw the sun that something in the front of the intro here to say, thank you all the non skippers for not skipping through be very important introduction to RVP every single episode. I finally saw the movie vice AJ, I've never seen it. I've been wanting to see it. I mean, obviously, I heard it was pretty good. Right. Yes. About the caney. Yeah. Former vice president and Christian bale got real fat to play Dick Cheney. Yeah. Death the doctor? I finally watched it. Full disclosure, Christian Bale's, one of my favorite actors. I think the dark Knight was like the nail in the coffin there where I was like this dude forever a ride for Christian bale. But he's done a ton of good movies. He's an incredible actor he plays. He plays Dick Cheney in this one. And I thought it was all right? Like it was tied. It was. All right. It wasn't. It wasn't like it was pretty accurate. I mean, how the fuck would. I know how fuck with anybody. No. I don't know. I guess accurate. It's it no accounts. And what happened in the news probably gave Dick Cheney a little bit too much credit if I had to guess in different ways, and maybe not enough and others. I'm not going to get into the politics of it all, but for me, I was just a little surprised because it wasn't exactly a best picture or best actor quality film. Like, it was solid. It was a fun movie was one I'd recommend you watch for sure when it's on HBO go or whatever in a year. But it wasn't when I'd recommend you pay for I feel there's probably like a low key comedy. Also, there were Ella. Of that were elements. Sure, I'm mean, sprinkled into the movies, you looking at fat Christian bale. It's it's for sure that's on the all by itself. Right. Yeah. And that's my dude. And he kills it. Love him. Love fat Christian Bill, maybe even more than regular skinny Christian bale, certainly more than freakishly skinny Christian bale from like the machinist or whatever that was called. All I remember seeing that. But this movie vice into the day felt like a kind of piss poor attempt at a cheap replication of the big short in a different story, and that's just my take. It was good. Not great. I recommend it. But don't pay and that's my personal anecdote followers on Instagram at the Rose Bowl and podcast where every day we fill up our Instagram story with photos and videos Sinden by you, our listeners, the Rb p gang..

Oscar nominations 2019 predictions: From A Star is Born to Roma

"Eight. I saw green book most recently, which I thought was great that may end up being my pick to to win the best picture. You've seen all best picture movies except for Roma. So you've got Black Panther black klansman bohemian rhapsody, by the way, Adam Lambert and Queen are going to perform Sunday, that'd be cool. That'll be really lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper performing. Which will also be cool. You really cool the favorite green book Romo rumour, aroma. Tony Romo model a star is born and vice. And who you picking unpicking green book to win because I think it made you feel the best and it was well done a period piece based on a true story, Rome. I think is getting a lot of a lot of buzz too. But maybe the director Affonso who also I think one best picture for gravity in our best director in two thousand thirteen for gravity Black Panther, which I know dragon scene for sure is definitely the best of all the marvel movies ever made. And it's interesting because it was such a big deal about their cast being all black the director and writer Ryan Kugler African American and so I'm surprised that he wasn't nominated for best director as well, Spike, Lee. This is his fifth nomination for best director. He's never one. But I'm picking green book to win that wouldn't be surprised if Roma does I loved bohemian rhapsody. But you remember when it came out, and we talked about they took some liberties with the story joke that Freddie Mercury doesn't die of aids in the movie because I remember making that joke. They changed a bunch of stuff around in that movie. Why did you read the bio and Freddie Mercury? I talked to friends that have seen it the no a lot more about Queen and the timetable with how the movie plays out and how he got in the band and stuff, but it's an entertaining movie. What's the best movie you've seen this year because I'm picking green book to win? I haven't seen any of them, by the way. So I got nothing. Oh. Yeah. Set a best picture you haven't seen Black Panther either. No. But are you a superhero movie guy? No, not at all. No. I I haven't seen any of those. I'm gonna say that I I like bohemian rhapsody a lot and I'm not a huge Queen fan. But I really liked it. But I'm gonna go with the stars four stars born it was it was really really I think the biggest reason reasonable win. Cathy, is that it's already been this is the fourth. They've done this story. I know that they've tweaked it. I didn't lady Gaga is gonna pull the upset for best actress, I hope so I you know, it really really made me like lady Gaga put her in a total different category fro. Yes. She's fantastic. A great singer. But you know, I I like her music, but I never put her like on this pedestal you've tried to act not try you weren't actor try. That's a bit of a stretch. But yeah, but the point is imagine the first real you ever play you get nominated for an Oscar, and I get that she's playing a struggling musician, and she can easily identify with that and go back to what it took to get discovered and all of that. And and you know, toiling in nothing jobs hoping for that break, but to execute that onscreen, and she was she was the best part of the movie by far Bradley Cooper is really good. But I hope she wins. Even though Glenn Close, it's seven nation. She's never one. So she could be a lifetime achievement kind of winner. If you will she's phenomenally talented, she s I don't know. But I liked Ramey. Malik as I think he's going to go. I mean, he did a great impersonation. So let's go actor in a leading role, you got Christian bale? Vice Bradley Cooper, a star is born Willem Defoe at eternity gate. Remmy Romney Malik bohemian rhapsody Vigo Mortenson green book, jussie smollet for the Chicago hope. Very funny. Avi next next year. He'll get one for that bright. Yeah. Like when Golden Globes. Yeah. So that it plus you're combining acting and singing did he really singing. Oh, okay. So we he was acting like a cigarette. Huber really saying. Yeah, he did having Adam Lambert seeing at the goal K, so okay. And at the Oscars, maybe Bradley Cooper, then because he's singing and acting and this is any directed it. This is Bradley Cooper's forced nomination as an actor, and he's never won Christian bale. One once Willem Dafoe. This is his fifth nomination. He's never won. And I don't I know Vigo Mortenson hasn't won. And certainly Rami Malik first nomination. Still picking me Malik to win. I thought he was great. Actress in a leading role you have low LIZA appereciation from Roma. You have Glenn Close. Everybody knows here from the wife Livia Coleman from the favorite lady. Gaga stars born Melissa McCarthy, can you ever forgive him in a more serious turn not a not a comedic role. She's awesome. The best lady Gaga for that. I think it's upset Glenn Close as the heavy favorite. But I'm I'm pulling a lady Gaga upset as my pick feel like Glenn Close because she's been around. So long performance is great. And then maybe it's like her turn kind of thing. Maybe and, but they did it lady Gaga's gonna keep acting and have another shot seems far-fetched at this point. Right. So is leader thirty. So, but how come Bradley Cooper, gene, get a directing because he did for American sniper? So that's about those are the biggies right there. Yeah. Supporting actor and actress, Marcia Lee who is in green book, I bet you. He wins a second. You don't want to talk about making hairstyling best animated feature. Incredible to come on. I don't know about best editing. The spider verse hairstyling best song song about best picture. Or did. We did that already songs. Best. The song. Okay. What are your choices? I don't see all the stars Black Panther. I'll fight RV g the place where lost things go. Mary. Poppins returns. Shallow. A star is born when a cowboy change Spurs for wings, the ballot BUSTER Scruggs, and that's different from original score original scores of music throughout the movie right songs. I think it'll be almost impossible. For lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper not to win. I think they win. Okay. We're we're out of time. I'll watch part of it. Yeah. It's like a four hour show. Four hours. It's hard to it gets here. It's one of my favorite my favorite nights of the year. I used to always do with my mom. That guy picks. I'm that guy. I have a couple of friends getting together to watch the show. I get it. I mean, if you watch I haven't seen all the movies. I wait to watch him on the Denver Broncos play. Year later used be all the movies. It'll be of several of these. Oh, I gave did your wife end up watching bohemian a couple times guide and really liked.

"And Roma is just one film that's up for best picture. But of course, there are many others. Well, there are and in fact, my brother asked me to his his his his businesses. He goes, please help me with the with the business. Oscar lottery who do you think's gonna win and the everything's pointing to green day winning best picture. And I think that the the awards are going to be fairly equally. Distributed. But either way I think it's going to be a good year for diversity for gender equality and also new independent stories vying with big budget, superheroes and foreign films and in terms of best actor best actress wou I think Christian bale will get best actor, and I think that Glenn Close. It's about time. She will probably get Pakistan slash she never had it before. She's been nominated a lot. Yeah. But she's an she's not hasn't won it. I mean, it's far as I know gosh. Now, I'm freaking out as far as I know. She hasn't. It's a very very strong diverse nominated pal pallet this year, and sashes stone and words daily was saying something very very interesting that we've never had such differences. We never had marvel films up for awards versus basically independent films. It's really quite amazing. The the one thing that Netflix has done for us. It's made people realize that we need more. More than just superheroes and more than just older stars. We need new stories.

"It wasn't harsh enough to me the stories Cheney story mirrors, America's story. You know? It's a guy who found him Bishen wanted to make his wife proud wanted to make his family proud. And then that ambition and that desire to make good turned into something darker, and that is kind of what happened to America. So I don't believe anyone's just born evil. I don't think it's the way it works. So I really was looking at what happened to this guy. How did he end up in the place that he ended up by the end, which without question is as a leader who did a lot of destruction. So that that was the way I looked at it. And in that lens it played more like a tragedy to be a tragedy for the world for the country. For him for his family. And it was more about a sense that we had lost something kind of essential. By that time. Do you think the Dick Cheney's evil? I just don't know what the word evil means. I mean can people become twisted can people's minds become bent through circumstance through addiction through pain through trauma. Yes. And would you call that position? They would reach would some called evil shirt to Dick Cheney get to a place like that. By the end, we're through power through paranoia that he did some awful stuff. Yes. But I just I don't use the word evil. I I really don't use good and evil. I don't think they're very helpful. Well, the reason I ask is the amazing performance by Christian bale who with when I first saw the news report that this movie was coming out of Christian bale would be playing Dick Cheney at first I thought that's nuts. And then I thought well, of course, because Christian bale complaint anyone, but I believe at the Golden Globes where he won best actor, and I know how much this was tongue in cheek and how much of it was serious. He thanked in his speech. Satan, which was a reference to Dick Cheney is that is that a way of calling him evil is that fair. Well, Satan in fairness, not necessarily in connection to Cheney Satan helped us in other regards with his movie, he helped us get financing. He was no. Well, he was kidding. We go back to pandas. He was he was totally tongue-in-cheek. Okay. I think he was saying that to make me laugh, and I think he was poking fun at once again just extremes in our country. There's this whole thing where Dick Cheney was portrayed as Darth Vader. And Christian Bill refers to him as Satan. Is there a part of based on your knowledge is there a part of that image that Dick Cheney and people around him actually sort of embrace in reciprocal tongue-in-cheek manner. Oh, absolutely. He's very public. Well, as public is Dick Cheney can be, but he has said he gets a kick out of it. I think one year some of his grandkids dressed up as Darth Vader. It's a very open joke in the family. So he owns it. He completely owns it. I actually think that the part of the movie that probably rattled some people more than anything else is depicting the Reagan, revolution and depicting. How America changed and I've heard. Some people say, oh, you're just going after the Republicans. No, not really. But there was a giant historical change in this country that we don't talk about improper terms. Let's talk about it. What was the change? I mean, the change was the Republican revolution. The Reagan revolution of the late seventies early eighties. And we are still living in that revolution. Some would call it the counter revolution to FDR's new deal. But it was you know, very skillfully and purposely done. I mean, you know, millions and millions of dollars came into Washington DC, they built the right wing think tanks. They'd the talking points were lining up. You had your perfect kind of lead actor as the president Ronald Reagan, and he gets in the American Enterprise Institute gives them a list of policies they want and by the end of his eight years..

"But Jeff, let's move on to another word. You wanna talk about? Let's talk about to go to best actor there's a lot. They have do that Scott. I think a lot of people in my opinion. Like, it was the two best things that I saw were Bradley Cooper and a star is born in Vigo Mortenson green book, neither one of them one. Last night. Romney Malik upset Bradley Cooper. And then we had Christian bale who is widely expected to win that award. Listen, he's he's he's very good. And the speech I think really helps him like people people like Christian bale more today than they did yesterday. Thank you. Thank you're making me say he thinks Satan, see if anybody can get away with thanking Satan. It's gotta be crucially. It was. It was a great speech. But like do I think that one of those two are now destined to win the Oscar no not necessarily? I still think Bradley Cooper in Vigo a have a shot. I don't know. What do you tell me? What do you think? All right. Well, I want to say this about about about robbing Naylor give leading up to the Golden Globes and sense the Oscar nominations and wins as well. I sort of been on the fence between Vigo Mortenson for grandpa Bradley to prefer stars born and Rami. I was I was definitely singing praises no pun intended for playing Freddie Mercury in bohemian rhapsody. But it wasn't until more recently that I've really sort of thought started thinking, you know, what people really love this movie, his performance is sensational. The movie ends on such a high note because of him that I feel like people are starting to get really get behind him as a front runner. And I mean say what you want to say about the gloves. But I do think that he is now the one to beat four lead actor at kademi works. We all liked Brahimi and wraps, but you got a little bit more than I did. But like is the quality of these two movies playing a part in in most of the conversations. I have about becaming rap. See it's like, yeah. That was a good movie around me. Malik was great rice. I didn't love vice, but but Christian bale, he was great. You know? But like you're not getting that with a star is born agreement because the compliments are more like even keeled. You know, what I mean, what do you think Peres? I don't I don't know if that you just explain necessarily makes an impact can say in terms of my front runner pick for the best actor category right now, nothing that happens in that particular category. Made a difference for me last night. I think it is still between Rami Malik, Bradley Cooper and Christian bale, and regardless of who won last night. It doesn't change the category. Where it did change for me is with Glenn Close winning best actress, that's the one that. I thought lady Gaga was going to run away with it. Now, all of a sudden, not only did Glenn Close just secure nomination in my mind. There is no way she's being overlooked for that. But now all of a sudden, she's become a serious contender against lady got okay for as far as going closest concern for the Golden Globes. I was going with to to predict who who would win was going with lady Gaga. So did I but now way for the Oscars? I still right now because we know we're on the goal to everything. I still have Glenn Close at the top to win. She is my number one pick for best actress because for the same reason that she did win last night. I know it's two different groups one what a few people have a whole bunch thousands. But I do think this is her year. This is her career moment. She never she had two other Golden Globe wins before. But this is her first feature film. Incredible. I mean, it's Glenn Close. How could she not have won an award for a movie, and I feel like she's never won an Oscar never this is her year. Sorry. I mean, gogga great performance. I don't think it is. I don't think it's going to happen for going close. I think that it's a lot easier to convince one hundred people to vote for you than it is to vote to convince the majority of nine thousand people, but you know, a lot of.

And Mary Louise Kelley majority leader Mitch McConnell says he is distressed Nebraska Republican Vince asked calls it a sad day for America. And Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrat describes it as a national security crisis. All senators all talking about the resignation of secretary of defense, Jim Mattis. I am joined now by another Senator Tim Kaine democrat of Virginia Cain sits on the Armed Services Committee, which will have to confirm whoever is nominated to succeed. Mattis Senator Kaine welcome. Could it be on the show? Thanks so much. I gather you're not happy about secretary Mattis impending departure either. No, look, I've been in public life for twenty five years. I'm an armed services member from a state. That's connected to the military. I have a son in the Marine Corps secretary Mattis has one of the best public servants. I've worked with in my career and his resignation, and especially the asserted reasons for the resignation should 'cause every American to be really really worried. Although was this inevitable Madison self in the resignation letter that I soon you're referring to there. He said the president deserves a Defense Secretary who shares his vision of the world, I think that's very diplomatically put. But if you look at the letter, basically, what secretary Mattis says is this that the two pillars of American security that are constant. And this is a guy who spent more than four decades providing security is a marine is one building strong alliances among democracies and second standing up. To thorough -tarian adversaries, and he basically said Mr President on these two values you and I disagree, and we've certainly seen in a president who undercuts allies at many opportunities using national security waivers to punish Canada and Europe, for example, and then cosies up to a thorough Teheran's such as Russia and and Kim Jong Hoon in North Korea. And that reason asserted by secretary Mattis is very very troubling. Have you talked to him if you talk to dramatically? I have not talked to him since the announcement. The announcement set off a firestorm now leave news, but ambassadors of European and other allies reaching out to Senator saying sort of what's going on announcements this week about Syrian Afghanistan, obviously, causing huge concerns among allies who were side by side with us. In those theaters. I mentioned it's your committee armed services that will have to vote on whoever is named to succeed him. Who would you like to see? You know, it's too early to say that there's a person that I'd like to see, but I want somebody who will be willing to stand up and speak truth to power one of the challenges. And this administration is those who do general McMaster, the national security advisor and secretary Mattis, they get pushed aside, but we need people who are experienced who will look the president in the eye and and speak truth. And if the president can handle it he can't handle it. But I don't want an enabler. There's been too many neighbors around this president and the first two years like bobbleheads saying yes to everything, and that's not what this country needs right now changing gears. We're speaking to you from Capitol Hill. Are you all making any progress on a voiding a government shutdown at stroke of midnight? Well, we had a bipartisan deal just two days ago passed the Senate unanimously with the blessing of the White House, but the president yesterday decided to do a one eighty and say he now if you can't get five billion hill shutdown government and punish eight hundred thousand plus federal employees. Who would not get as long as there's a shutdown? Yeah. I heard you on Sarah calling him the Grinch about to steal Christmas, which I will give you credit. It's a good line. But subsidies. Senator or else? Well, thousands of people who are going to have to work without being paid over the holidays. You're you're absolutely right. And that was what we did when we gave them a bipartisan deal less than forty eight hours ago that he agreed to I know. But here we are society afternoon. So what happens? Well, what's going on? Right now is the vice president, Jared, Kushner, and Mick Mulvaney. The new chief of staff were up talking to Senator Schumer, and we're seeing reports out of that meeting that there may be an announcement soon about a path forward possibly a deal. I understand those administration officials went over to talk to speaker Ryan. So this is very much kind of a work in progress right now, no reason to shut the government down. Absolutely. None just a few seconds left. But, but we're also hearing from Shimer's office, and they're saying that this deal would involve funding for border security, but not the wall would you vote for that? I voted for it many many times comprehensive immigration reform and twenty thirteen head border security money. We offered the president deal in February with border security money. He turned it down border security is something that we all support. All right. Thank you so much Senator. Alright thanks much Virginia. Democrat Tim Kaine and we are talking with other Republicans elsewhere on the show.
