New Insights on the Bruins' Disappointing Week
"A great way for Bruins not a great week. I know they ended it on our early started next week Sunday. They started to walk on a good note, but not ending particularly. Well, there are a lot of problems. What was the biggest to you? Well, I mean, obviously the the one where you look at just the Optics of it right is the defense, right? I mean you give up 13 goals in two games. I think everyone get concerned about that and I think that's wrong. You see the right flag is you know, you're seeing way too many transition goals created chances in front of Rask and a lot, but the thing is is that that's always a concern. Oh shit. Like when you go that many goals. I'm sure not to spend learning but also, I mean I look at it right where I think we all are in agreement of the rooms and needs more depth on the blue. Looks like we've talked about at home last week. Like that's a guy they need right? So this isn't any surprise and when you missing three starters on your blue line, you know, including two guys in lausanne and Thursdays are good at kind of showing up that net front and girls like ew, you know as much as I think people are now the critics been hurt. I feel like there's like the The Narrative of like, oh they can they they can do well without them, you know, he's an injury-prone. Even though it's really only been kind of this year. We're didn't really really bad. But you know you miss Chris leak in his ability to get the puck out and you know, get the brake outgoing and hit those first passes cuz off these games have been stuck in their own Zone with for checking issues. So but you look at that defense, right you miss those three guys, you have back and iron in a top pairing roll and you know, yes potential. I mean we've seen multiple times we're out of something. He's big enough yet to handle some of these guys and he's been just kind of Knocked around by Chris Kreider which led to a goal. He got knocked around by Andrews Lee and pushed around which led to Chicago gets the island is so I mean you go to depleted decor and you know, you got drawn more playing like the minutes and he did not look very good. The last two games so wage. Obviously, you're shorthanded you hopefully you hope that a shorthand unit doesn't give up 13 goals, but still it's not expected. But you had to know that there was going to be some issues with your going to be giving birth. One more chance has given how the state of your Decor is. Now.

P. specifically came out with earnings but Jason they also announced a massive fifteen billion dollar stock buyback and that was seen as a way to fend off a hostile takeover from zero except with a story by Austin Carr about that plus we catch up with Rebecca greenfield she oversees all of our diversity coverage that's not a story she has in the magazine this week as well as news of the week obviously the sentencing the conviction of Harvey Weinstein plus reddit's traders man their shaking up the stock market the story by Lou color it's the cover story and it takes us to a dingy corner of the internet he went so we didn't have to but let's begin with global markets they were rocked by the spread of the corona virus this week we take a look at how Wall Street is looking for the right metaphor for the meltdown economic center Cristina Lindblad and market center Mike Regan joining us now with two stories of the magazine this week it is all about the virus of trying to figure out the economic impact and also the market impact Mike we got to start with you because we haven't seen this type of global equity selloff in sometime you're right it is looking like right now but the worst selloff since two thousand and eighteen and wrote about is how it's very much calling into question what was kind of the narrative behind this whole bull market which is that the so called wall of worry in other words yeah we were hit with the European debt crisis we were hit with the tensions with Iran the trade war and investors really love these sort of little metaphors and cliches that boil down a complex marketing to is a simple notion like always climbing a wall of worry and I would be a dead cat bounce yeah I know you guys hear these these metaphors are take the stairs up to the elevator down and and the deck it all kind of applicable right now it's important especially now because Robert Shiller's out with a book actually the magazine excerpted not too long ago called narrative economics and it's it's basically about the notion about how these little narratives and and the metaphors it's sort of are more important than you think in sort of dictating where the economic trends where the market trends go and I wonder if we're at an inflection point right now where that wall worry made everyone a little too complacent that the federal reserve other Senate central banks were there they had our back and that it was safe to keep fighting despite the scary news out this epidemic is much different because it's not clear what really a central bank can do trying to sort of characters but that a demand shock and a supply shock so it's it's one of those inflection points right pick up a narrative that the market had rallied on for a long time is is in jeopardy of just being going up in smoke well because part of what everyone needs to figure out central bankers included and investors Christina Lynn but is what is the economic impact here how do you measure it how do you assess it while economists are also looking for stories are going back in history and looking for episodes like this that they can use to model what they've been global economic impact can be you know we had the Spanish flu that was obviously one of the worst episodes fifteen million people are believed to have died we had the swine flu so right now the World Health Organization has stopped short of calling it a pandemic but people there are people out there modeling a result of a pandemic and we've seen for example Oxford economics say that could be one trillion of global output wiped out from an event like that yeah and I think it's interesting special we talked about in some parts of the world there are economies that were struggling before the virus right and whether or not this really takes them into recession and at least certainly and Italy content other countries in Europe into recession and also you know we were starting to feel better about the global economy right breaks it was me seating the trade wars were receding a bit so that it was like the expectation as as twenty twenty was going to be a year to rebuild and that is now really off the table and my obviously the markets were paying very close attention this week to what the president had to say about that we know the markets are always front of mind for him politics and governmental response especially here in the U. S. plays mightily into the market story here right and it president trump's his own narrative has has been very influential in the market since he was elected obviously you know he's very much a cheerleader for the stock market for the economy but this is a story that is kind of out of his control where he cannot he's trying very hard to control the narrative around the market trying to keep that confidence high trying to get people not to panic but it's one of these occasions where it's simply watching out of his control as far as how far this spreads and it you know if we're really do for a China type situation where we see quarantines in U. S. and and more quarantines in Europe that will really just snuff out the the economic growth that's so important for the stock well I think that in a narrative for a long time was everybody thing is not to be such a big deal certainly in developed markets and we start to see that play out in fact it played out in the debates this week that we saw among the democratic candidates and they brought that front center and I feel like all the Senate picked up a lot of momentum here in the United States and the impact absolutely absolutely I know for a long time it was interesting when the case the case is really were swelling and getting very serious in China you know the whole market narrative was that must contain the China it's not going to make it here and it clearly obviously it's leaked out of China the issue in the United States now is I don't think there's a lot of confidence in eggs what we know about the the virus the right CD C. hasn't really been testing that many people are we know there's just one case in California that they call you know spread through the community rather than someone that was brought back from from Asia so is there a lot of uncertainty a lot sort of questioning of authority of of what we're really dealing with right now one last question just quickly tying and now it feels like we're getting maybe some containment terms of the case is that the economic impact to have a better feeling that Christina not really I think the number of cases are slowing down but there is particular concern you know I know a lot of large companies people have returned to work but smaller and medium sized you know workers in some cases are stuck back home because they went home for the new delivery and new year holidays does Cristina Lindblad and Mike Regan giving us the corona virus story really in two ways I was the economists and investors and everyone else trying to figure it out I feel like if there's a theme this week is about the stories whether it's the virus the markets.

"Whereas I think that a lot of people especially younger men are growing up, you know, well, put it. Bluntly, respecting women a lot more because women are being dropping silent. They're being very upfront about about how we should be treating others and men are realizing that, you know, they're softer side. Does not a weakness. And I know I was raised by a single mom. You know, I didn't have that. A macho figure my life to teach Miller wrong lesson his thankfully and every day. I always wonder, you know, what if my my father who haven't spoken to in years and years and years who was a very macho guy and was very much in a very different person than I am. And my mom was how he would have reacted to be crying over superheroes. And he wouldn't have liked it. He would have been mad about it. But I think that we approached it generation that is in touch with their feelings in a in a way that allows. Them to feel okay doing this. And I certainly hope that's the case made me feel better about the future. I'm gonna always going to have the assholes and the people who, you know, think this is all childish by. I think that our art of any kind whether it's pop art, or you know, art house art from another nation, if it's that's touching you and some and causing you to cry. It's doing its job. And we're we connecting with art in a way that we're supposed to be. So I want to hear from Chris because Chris Kreider and gained by no, he cries movie because he's a real, man. So I cry on that's I'm crying right now. In fact, I know I I've never had a problem crying, you know, hiding my feelings like that. You know, I do think there is that that stigma, you know, even though it's better now than it's been, you know, I still think there's like an entire generation. And I also think it depends on where you live in. You know, who you grow up with and all that stuff where you know, toxic masculinity is not going away. And a lot of cases, it seems worse. Than ever for some reason, which I don't quite understand. I I remember when I was in highschool ahead is naive thought that you know, as I get older this, quote, unquote, terrible older toxic generation will will die out and a more progressive nuance integration. We'll take over and sadly, it's somehow become the complete opposite. Where? The toxic voices have just even grown louder. But I don't know like my father. I wouldn't say my father was very in touch with his emotions he was kind of emotionless. I guess you could say, but he wasn't like cruel. He wasn't a, you know, a hard man's, man. I guess so I guess that way. I never was instilled with this idea that it was wrong to show emotion. You know? So I really think is just depends on where you come from and your background, and whose whose instilling certain things in you. I think it's it's healthy to let emotions there's nothing worse than bottling emotions up to take it from me, folks, it'll it'll eventually boil over and explode in terrible ways. So I wish more people would feel open about this. And I wish I don't know. I wish things would change for the better. I don't know if they ever will. And it's depressing to think about and now I'm going to cry about that. So. This letter mentioned that some critics peg this whole thing is, you know, just being suspended childhood. But you know, I do think there is some progression. Here. I think a few years ago. The only time you saw people in public admitting or you know, men in public admitting that they cried during movie was maybe during a picture feel like that was like the only kind of acceptable place. Ben, Brad, I'm curious. What you you have to say about this topic? I am not sure that. Well, okay. So I feel like the MCI has has done a little bit of work. But I think it's more like the culture, the pop culture landscape as a whole instead of just laying this all at the feet of the MCI is like the the the specific reason that some of this is becoming more acceptable..

"It's not incredibly old, but point is it's convoluted, right? It doesn't have the luxury boxes doesn't have the state of the art stuff. Alberta's already gotten an arena for Edmonton. So the feeling is the Calgary wants to be able to get theirs and updated building the way their rival oiler faithful do and it doesn't seem like it's happening. So is it possible that they can use Quebec as leverage to get their new buildings. Now, the reason National Hockey League doesn't have an appetite to go to Quebec and add an eighth Canadian franchise is because the Canadian dollar is like seventy five cents to the American dollar. So that's a problem because when you make Canadian money, and you have to pay American money, then you're going to lose some profit. But if it's already a Canadian franchise that's already made that adjustment. It's going to be easier for them. Move now, it'd be easier for Ottawa to move to Quebec because they'd be able to stay in the same division. No harm. No foul of the flames would be a problem because they're already out west. But I don't wanna see either of those teams move. Don't get me wrong. But I'm just wondering if that could ever be leveraged we've talked about that before. And it doesn't look like Calgary is anywhere close to a building. And that seems to be a little bit of a problem. Michael says Chris Kreider has been playing through a hamstring injury since right after the deadline. Yes. I hardly practices due to a UB. I he's had for the last month at what point is it incumbent upon these teams to sit there guys out. Thanks. I'll hang up and listen. Well, here's the thing. All right players get paid to play. All right. I know we get into this world now of rast and why play in a law season. Chris kreider. Yes. For foster professionals. They wanna play hockey. Okay. And none of the injuries that they have can get worse to the point where can affect them for next year. It becomes the same thing as I said before. Minute situation. Does Chris Kreider need to go out there and play twenty three minutes tonight against Troy in a game. That doesn't have any meaning for the standings for either team. But Chris Kreider also wants a score thirty goals for the first time in his career. Right. And he's been stuck at twenty six for awhile because of this hamstring injuries got ten games left to try to get four goals. I think he's going to try to wanna do it and same thing with faucet. He wants to be there for his teammates guys gotta play. So I think it's income and right now on the coach to reduce the minutes, and if the guys are really aching and there's the second back to backs and I'd have to take a look at the schedule..

"And I'm interested in the way, you're thinking about metabolism or this or that other? My doctor kind of rejects everything you're talking about as twelve minutes to see him. And like, it's basically refilling my blood pressure medication. That's it is a doc in Saint Louis that you know, that you like, and so the answer to these questions is inevitably and invariably always I don't I just don't know once in a blue moon. I get asked that question, and the person is asking it from the place that I know, and I'm like great, I used to always tell people about you in Vegas until they couldn't come and see you. So what we're actually doing is creating a doctor database on our site. And we're making it a pain in the ass for the doctors to fill out because I want them to do some work. Right. So it's like you've got to come to the site. You got to answer a lot of questions and really get into the weeds on like how much time do you spend each month learning about this subject or that subject or this object? What is your process of reeducation? What is your philosophy on medicine because I think in about twenty five hundred words or less than I maybe we allocated thousand words, or whatever I don't remember what it was. But we gave quite a bit of room for people. To basically, explain how they think about medicine because even though I can't do it in thirty seconds. If given three minutes, I could probably provide a reasonable overview and the goal is to basically figure out a way to get that to be a critical mass such that now becomes just a sort of directory for patient. So I someone can say if my zipcode is this boom, pull up all doctors within twenty miles, and then they'll be able to go and then read about those people, and obviously there it's impossible for me to vet these physicians that this in no way, shape or form means like endorse. I'm putting an endorsement on this person. You know, Chris Kreider has done a bit of that through his work through. He can at least vouch for you know, so and so's taken. This course, but my hope is that given the hurdle of how much work goes into that. It's not just someone mindlessly saying, I'm doc. I one another, you know, portal of referral if it streamlines the process for patients by fifty percents still valuable, I think it could be more valuable net. How can I help with us? These are all healthcare people. Activists patients they should just go and sign ups if you go to Peter Tia, MD dot com. I don't look at my website enough to know that I'm sure that somewhere on there. It is physician network or something like that. It's not a porn sites. You have no business on it. That's my criteria. Usually. We've touched on this briefly..

"This league j pass through the ncwa system ten players on that current roster for the rangers have gone through the college system including important players like jimmy vesey and chris kreider and brady shea these are the players that need to take the next step so i'm sure they were looking yes we want to win a stanley cup open the next five years he can do that but the idea of we want to find talent but we also want to make sure that the town that we have grows to its fullest potential and there are a lot of young guys on this team where i'm not sure that's been the case so i'm sure that's what they're looking to see if they can do and and i and i'm with you i think as much sheldon keefe with somebody that was in conversations and some other players that might have been on staffs of of nhl teams they look like they wanted to get a college guy and it was going to be between montgomery and quinn and montgomery went to dallas so they convinced quinta come and we'll say and we'll see how i would say the vegas effect and all this for all teams all coaches just like we talked about before william mm carlson being in you know being in columbus for two years i think it's important now for coaches and for for management people you know more so ver coaches because they're the day to day is to look at this and say you know look not players for what they think they are but think about players and what they can be because i get william cross is a great example to me and i think the rangers have a number of good young players on their team you know what can they be with the right instruction the right coaching and the right opportunity so the rangers have some interesting players on their rosh advantage that for example i mean a lot of high end talent can they get him to another level and they get chris kreider to another level can they get kevin hayes to another level so for me it'll be interesting to see if you know if gave it quinn has that kind of ability that foresight and that ability to implement the kind of things and to stick with guys and give them opportunities to be successful so that'll be the.
