"When you set up an ecommerce site some way to take payment or something that you're going to deliver in some form you have to make a number of decisions and it's easier to do this than it ever has been got companies such as squarespace shop many others that provide turnkey solutions. Start changing the way your creativity is valued. Hi chris. it's emily from seattle. And i've been listening to the show since episode. One still still enjoying the plans anyway. My sister and i are about to launch online store soon and we were going to use a combination of stripe and pay pal so would stripe. You can choose which credit cards. Except in addition i see that some websites have lots of other ways to process payments including direct checking account for draws crypto currency. And more so part of me thinks that this is overkill but another part wonders like might be better to have more options to pay like. I don't wanna turn anyone away so yeah can't wait to hear thoughts on this emily. What's good thank you so much for listening. And congratulations on your soon to be launched online store. I definitely let us know the website when you have wine we can share it out. So let's talk about how to accept payments or different ways of accepting payments. So it sounds like let's see just from the notes here emily's on-track with stripe in pay pal. Which is great. You can have a lot of options there and overall the options you offer whether it's for accepting payment or anything else it should relate to your customers like what are your customers preferences and so for most e commerce stories unless it's something specialized jaw come to in a moment Simply having an option to pay by major credit card is really all you need. It doesn't have to be every major credit card in the world. You know just the three or four most common ones. That's general consumer expectation like people. Don't expect that All sorts of other methods are automatically going to be accepted so speaking of those methods as for unconventional methods of payment. Like crypto. or something else. Unless you have a lot of people just banging down your door asking for it or maybe if you're in a field like the security industry or something where those kinds of payments are more common like. I think you'll probably find to be more complicated than it's worth. Maybe in the future. It'll be very easy for everybody to accept crypto and all sorts of other options. But i think for the most part now most e commerce stores are gonna to be just fine with those basic defaults so keep it simple I don't think more.

"How can you make a manual process? Easier starts by answering the question. How can I do think better school? My Name's Chris Calico. This is our classroom episode. We're GONNA talk today about using automation and workflows. Now when I say how. Can I do this thing better? For example I've been using a tool recently called keyboard maestro and this is not an endorsement or sponsored message. I've just been using this tool myself. I take a lot of screen shots. Sometimes I need to copy and Paste. The screen shot into a keynote presentation or other program. I used to have to take the screen shot. I would save it to dropbox then. Open the file manually. Before copying over the image to keynote or whatever and finally tried to this for like ten thousand time. I realized you know this could be simpler or at least it should be simpler so it should be simpler. Might there be away for it to actually be simpler. And so I use this tool keyboard. Maestro to create a single button to do was taking me at least six clicks before now get really excited about taking screen shots. I'm like Oh time to take a screen shot. Yes press this button screen shot Bam but hey let's focus specifically on workflows for your side Hustle in episode twelve twenty previous classroom episode about three weeks ago exactly three weeks ago how. We talked about fulfilling orders and identifying the tasks to complete whenever someone places an order so somebody goes to your website and say place an order they send you some money much celebration has had hopefully got your phone rigged up to make a big teaching noise whenever that stranger puts money in your account but in addition to the teaching you also got some stuff. You need to do that. You have to send that customer confirmation message you have to do whatever needs to be done to make sure they actually perceive their order and probably some other tasks as well. The point is many of these tasks can probably be completed with the use of automation. Now it's nice to send an additional non automated note to new customers. It's nice to actually send you know real communication but in terms of notices and things the first one and anything that you don't need to send that personal communication for it can be sent automatically usually through your shopping cart or payment processor. Now if you've heard me talk about email this before you know that they are usually the best means of being able to communicate with your customers. A lot of tools and tactics are optional. You don't have to be on every social network etc but for most businesses and email list is not optional. It's definitely something you should have and technically not overwhelming. If you're new to this but technically you don't just need one list over time you'll probably have many on your second email list might be your customer list because you've got that general. Mls THAT YOU'RE BUILDING. That list is prospects People who are interested in what you're talking about or interested in that information providing but you're also trying to gently sell them. Something provide them a service product etc. So those people have expressed interest in what you're offering but they haven't committed now however you have a second group. You had this group of people that have committed and you'll want to communicate differently with your customers so automation for example can remove them from that prospects list and add them to the customer list. You can still send them your regular mailings. It's not gonNA stop writing to them altogether but you just don't want to try to sell them on something they've already purchased like this is a common mistake of new marketers and just think about how awkward it can be think about it from the perspective of a consumer end up buying something after you have been part of a sales process or you've joined some email list and it's compelling enough you go and make a purchase and then the next day you get an email saying hey go and purchase this thing. You're like wait a second. I already did. You get another email. That says here are all the people saying. This thing is great and you're like well I already habit then worse you might get an email at some point it says. Hey this thing is on sale. And you're like what I already have it. And I paid full price. Although situations can be avoided with that simple automation of removing them from a prospects list and into a customer list. So I'm going to give you a visual workflow of what a couple of different processes might look like and I'm taking this from this side hustle book from idea to income and twenty seven days. If you have that book I'm pulling some of this from day. Fifteen design your first workflow. But if you don't have the but not to worry I'm taking the images from that section and adding them to the show notes page for this episode. So when you're able to access the notes page you can get those images and see some real world examples of workflows and automations all right. Let's take a quick break when we come back. I'm GonNa tell you about a helpful tool that can make automation simple. You can actually do a lot of the work for you. Save you a lot of time in the long run so shout out our sponsor. Thank you sponsor. I appreciate you helping us. Keep the lights on. And then.

Oh no today's listener. Received a bad review. Got A bad review on se selling some. I don't know what they're selling actually selling something and they got a bad view through no fault of their own. An air distressed which I understand right batteries suck. Is there anything they can do to appeal? That's what they want to know and this is both a logistical practical question as well as the psychological one because as I said when you get a bad review it doesn't feel good. I WanNa talk about that as much as the actual process of. Is there any action you can take to improve or remove that review from your listing? Welcome decided school. This is Chris Calico and this whole thing about getting a bad review is an experienced that every creator is going to have at some point sooner or later. If you're selling something online this is going to happen so I'm grateful for the chance to talk it through with this question. It is a rapidly changing world out there as we all know and in this new environment. We're all going to be buying more stuff online than ever before. I've been selling Nazi for a while and sell on average ten items a month. It's a star but after a long starting of unbroken five star reviews. Someone left me a bad review with no real reason it just seems spiteful what can I do? I wrote to Azi but they just sent me a form letter in response saying they won't do anything. Would love to hear your thoughts about this. Thanks again. John. Thanks so much for listening and hey first of all my condolences. I've been there just as I said you know anybody who sells online you're gonNA experiences at some point But nevertheless I remember some of my early reviews I was crushed. I was like what did I do to offend this person. How have I let this person down? I took it very personal and in my case at least I finally learned not read them for the most part you know positive or negative. I just don't want to be influence in that way. Because I know that they can personally impact me and again that may not be how it should be but sometimes things just are how they are right. It's not about logic. It's about emotion. Now let's talk about the actual issue of what can you do so as you found appealing to the platform probably won't work at all just because platforms like Amazon ebay Google every platform essentially. They tend to be pretty resistant to requests for removal or amendment of reviews to have any chance of success usually need to be able to demonstrate that there are legitimately false claims in their of you or that. Otherwise doesn't meet the rules. That the platform establishes if there's some kind of personal attack you know that can actually work in your favor so you might point that out or for example. If somebody says you know I didn't get a refund for this and you can show. Actually they did get a refund here the credit card statement then. That might help but it might not. Sometimes you can point to examples and say this review really shouldn't be here for all these reasons and you're correct but they don't respond or you get that format of response that John received so it's just kind of how it is if you really do want to fix it. Your best bet is usually to work with the person who left the review which is not always enjoyable but often if you engage with that person they at least do the ability to typically go back and change or remove review if they choose to may be different depending on the platform but often that is an option so if there is a way for you to dialogue with that person you know apologize even if you feel it's not your fault see if there's anything else you can do for them then sometimes that might help okay so those of us who options basically aside from that your best path forward is to learn to let it go frozen style let it go just focus on getting more positive reviews and also. I know this can feel really personal so I encourage you in anybody else in this situation to as much as possible de personalize it a bit and just think about your own experience with reviews. Think about being a consumer. If you're looking at something only has positive reviews. You might actually be skeptical about it. Imagine looking at Yelp at the listing for your favorite restaurants if your favorite restaurant has been around for any amount of time. I'm pretty sure you can find a lot of people who don't like it right. You can go and look and say this place that you love and there's all these people who just don't like it give it one start Cetera. But that's not gonNA stop you from going because it's your favorite restaurant. You understand. Restaurant serves a lot of people are going to have a range of experiences. Then also like if you're looking on Amazon for example and looking at an item a book or something else that only has positive reviews. Like imagine has five hundred five star reviews and zero one-star reviews. You might wonder is that really legit. You just know that. There's a bunch of positive reviews. There will probably be negative ones as well. I was watching a youtube video the other day that was live and as soon as the video started somebody went and did like a thumbs down downloaded the video and the video had just started like there's no way they'd actually seen the content for whatever reason they just did that and we know that this is human nature you know this is like a weird odd not so great part of human nature but it is just the way it is so John. I know this doesn't help you. Get that bad review removed but hopefully it puts it in some context for you again. Your long term goal is to focus on getting more positive reviews. Put your energy towards that go to your customers. And say hey. Would you help me out if you had a good experience? Please looking your review. It really makes a difference. Lastly Congratulate Yourself that you have now joined the club of real creators because everyone who makes and sells something online. We'll eventually have this. Experience doesn't need to define you just need to keep going and doing your thing. So that's my response to you. John and anybody else out there without experience. Keep fighting the good fight. Don't give up listeners. If you've got to come to school dot com slash questions. We'll be featuring them throughout the year along with updates listeners as they launched their projects. Oh Hey by the way. If you like Sinus go and give me review preferrably a good one. You can do that on Apple. Podcast just takes a moment. Quick Little Five Star rating click that button and it does actually help other people. Discover the show. Thanks so much everyone guys that and everybody else will thank you for listening. "Was ten years ago when Emily. Reagan gave up a dream job to move across the country with her husband. It wasn't the first time either. Her partner was in the military and moving was just part of the lifestyle. There were some perks to packing up and moving so often for one. It meant that. Emily was able to get a lot of different experience. She'd worked in Journalism News and social media and a whole host of cities in environments with this latest move. Things were a little different for the first time. She and her husband had a baby in tow so instead of finding outside work she became a stay at home mom. This was challenging. Life on a single income didn't leave much money for luxuries. While emily knew her role was important she was still hoping to contribute financially and soon she had an opportunity to do just that a referral from a colleague led to a small job on the side. The task was quite simple to help a small business with their facebook presence posting once in a while and occasionally reaching out to media outlets whenever they had something to talk about. Both tasks were things. Emily had done in the past and she knew she could accomplish them with her eyes closed. The client agreed an. Emily received a retainer with a monthly fee of seventy five dollars. It was a small amount of money but it meant a lot to her. Money could go towards a date night for emily and her husband or a guilt. Free trip to this ally but above all gave her a new sense of worth after working with this client for a while. Emily was presented with a new opportunity. A friend gave me a heads up about a facebook post. She saw a business owner in. That friends network was looking for help putting together a media kit unlike her first GIG. This job wasn't something. Emily was familiar with and hadn't done before but she was a good writer. She knew the basics of PR and above all she had a willingness to learn. She hopped online and studied everything. There was to know about the process. In the end she delivered big time but client was so happy with. Emily's work that they kept calling her services over the next year soon. She built a reputation as the person who could get any administrative task during this time. Emily had given birth to another child and the family was growing. They also moved a couple more times for her husband's military placements all through that process. She kept her clients. The reason was that Oliver work was done online without knowing it she turned herself into virtual assistant a one. Stop Remote Admiral Shop for business owners across the country and she was happy she only had a few clients but they reliable provided a nice side income for her growing family so for the next five years. She kept earning a few hundred dollars a month. It was then that she saw the potential in the online space specifically the blogging world in pinterest she'd seen others producing on-line content crafting sales and marketing themselves now. Emily switched into full on business mode. I she picked up more client work to boost her side income into the four figures. Then she saw the potential of teaching others how to do the same thing. She knew plenty of other military. Moms love to make extra money as a virtual assistant. She began training a few people. She knew and online marketing. Pr AND SOCIAL MEDIA IN TIME. They found clients of their own and felt the same level of empowerment. Emily debt this led her to transition. Our business from doing mostly client work to mostly creating courses around becoming a virtual assistant. She produce content on her blog and made free. Pdf WITH TIPS and tricks. Eventually she began selling guide titled the. Va Crash course accomplishing all of this. While her family grew to four children between her client work and selling courses. She's earning over two thousand dollars per month. While staying at home and managing the household any future moves might be disruptive to her family of six but not to her income off. Okay so a couple of weeks here. I WanNa talk about Emily's about page because it's a really good example. I always like to point out when somebody has a good about page because longtime listeners may know page is the second most important page on your website like obviously the homepage is what people see the most but then the about page where people go when they're thinking about hiring you especially for a service business. So let's talk about that Emily Reagan. Pr Dot com slash about which we will link up in the show notes. You go there and you see some really. Well done photography of Emily as well as her family. You see a personal story. That copy right from the beginning is high there. If you stumbled on my page someone probably told you about me and that doesn't excellent thing because I have done very little to promote myself because for the last ten years. I'VE BEEN PROMOTING MY CLIENTS. Really love that introduction and it goes on from narrow putting forward these two values which are the most important to communicate in a service business. The two values are being welcoming and being authoritative. So she's welcoming like I said it's warm it's vibrant. It's personal get. It's also authoritative. It's like oh I can trust this person. You know first of all as a person but I also trust her as an expert as an authority. So she's doing that really well. Great example I also want to give a shutout Oliver military listeners. military servicemen and servicewomen as well as spouses partners family of military. All of. You are a great inspiration to me. So thank you for your service and thank you for doing something for yourself too. It's okay you can do both. That's what we're all about. You can do something good for other people and for yourself at the same time all right listeners. Inspiration is good but inspiration with action is better. She earned one hundred fifty eight thousand dollars doing this and his on-track for two hundred thousand dollars in two thousand nineteen now before we dive in let's talk about qualifications, one of the wonderful things about the world of online work is that no one really cares about traditional qualifications. Doesn't mean. That qualifications. Don't matter. Whenever you hire someone to do something you want to know that they're able to do it. Well, but what I mean is that ability could be demonstrated in a variety of ways. So it's not so much about having a degree in something or having this kind of formal training. If you have that that's great. And if it's relevant to your field wonderful. But if not it doesn't necessarily mean, you can't do something unless we're talking about something like dentistry in which case, you probably actually want to go through the traditional path for that. But at the same time, I also went on to earn a master's degree in international studies among other things, and you know, just just as I would say you don't care about me being a high school dropout. I now use emotion, and they have an amazing deal. For a limited time, you can get a complete hosted account with everything you need starting at just three dollars and ninety nine cents a month. Again, starting at just three dollars and ninety nine cents a month. Check out at side-hustle school dot com slash website. That's side-hustle school dot com slash website. Hello, greetings, was up and welcome. This is science will school. I'm your host Chris calico bringing you the weekly recap. This is the weekly recap for week number sixteen of season three it featured a cake artist cake artists to starts because she needs to make extra money ends up building a six figure business bike tours in Amsterdam in New York City dog Walker and guitar enthusiast. Earning seven thousand dollars a month in filial commissions as usual a wide range of stories now in this recap. I'm going to give you a reminder about the only two things you can do to increase income in an existing side-hustle or small business, especially in ecommerce shop, you're selling something online at our website. And you're trying to sell something. What can you do to increase income or sales, and I'll bring you an audio update from a previously featured side hustler. She's got a report of a fantastic income increase. And that's not all she's also going to give you some contrarian advice. I'm a big fan of Katrina advice being willing to kind of. Look beyond the obvious and say, you know, everybody else's telling you this maybe try the opposite or maybe try different approach. Whether it's the opposite or just something completely different the thought of before. So all that's coming up in a short period of time. But I quick announcement this week only a special deal. My publisher is offering the e book version of my latest book side hustle. I mean, it's kind of it's about starting aside. Also movie chose kind of an obvious title side-hustle from idea to income in twenty seven days on their offering that for just one ninety nine dollars ninety nine cents on several popular eating formats, including Amazon, kindle, knock cO and more. So if you want to pick up the book version of Bositis oh book, which provides again, a step-by-step plants to kind of go through and enact lot of the things that we talk about on the show. This is the only time in fact in the year and a half since the book has been out that it's been discounted. It's not like it's a fire sale or a furniture store that's going out of business all the time. So for this week only one ninety nine and also this discount is technically available only in the US and Canada. If you're. Of North America. I apologize authors actually have no control over the pricing. When it comes to publishing. It's a long complicated process that authors are kind of excluded from, but if you are outside the country, you may be able to purchase from the US Amazon site, so if you know, how that works if you're in a different country, and you're used to using Amazon either your local version or the US version, if is it the US version, you might be able to do it. But the point less than two dollars this week only everything must go. I mean, it's an epoch they're probably not gonna run out of stock but still just on principle. Silence will school is brought to you by fundraise the future of real estate. Investing fundraising Abel's, you to instantly access high quality high potential private market real estate projects from high rises in DC to multifamily apartments in LA each fund rise investment allows you to diversify instantly across dozens of real estate projects each one carefully. Edited an actively managed by their team of real estate pros, unparalleled transparency and real time. Reporting lets you see how the development of specific properties impacts your overall portfolio. If you wanna check it out for yourself. Go to fundraise dot com slash side-hustle. That's F U N D R I S, E dot com slash side hustle to have your first three months of fees. Waived. Tight. Let's move on. Let's talk about the two things you can do to grow your ecommerce business. I talk about this from time to time because it's really important people often focus on getting more traffic to their website and nothing wrong with getting more traffic to your website. It's usually a good thing if you're trying to grow your ecommerce business. However, you got a website that is selling a product or a service. Your whole point is to get people to your website. Get them to sign up for something. Make a commitment. Make a purchase yours only two things you can do to increase those numbers. You want to have more money at the end of the day more sales more clients increased traffic or increase conversions. So if you're focused entirely on one of them, try thinking about the other and people tend to focus much more on that first one about increasing traffic, so I tend to talk a little bit more about the other one, which is increasing conversions. So here's an example, if you're getting one hundred visitors to your site every day, and you're making one sale a day. Then you've got this one percent conversion rate, which is not bad in some industries, but you could spend time and possibly some money. Trying to bring more. Visitors to your site. You could spend all your time saying how can I go from one hundred visitors to two hundred visitors every day or you could work on converting two percent instead of one percent, and you double your money. If all of a sudden, you know, everyday you're still getting the same one hundred visitors to your site. But instead of one person being persuaded to make a purchase two of them are that is one hundred percent increase. So if you start with your overall goal, which is to get more people to your website and do a better job of persuading them to buy and then kind of split those things off into their respective branches. Try to do one small thing every day to make progress in both areas, and by the way, this doesn't necessarily have to be at e commerce business. And if you have some other offer if there's the point is you got something somewhere that you're trying to drive people to to take action, whatever it is by for ecommerce a website specifically, you could do some search engine optimization. You can learn about that and research your keywords try to rank higher and Google you could otherwise focus on content. Maybe make some blog posts, maybe do some videos because. Unpack links trying to get other sites to adults to yours. Get referral traffic. You could possibly invest money in Facebook ads or Instagram ads or Google ads or something else? So lots of different stuff, you could do on the traffic side of things conversion wise, you really wanna focus on your offer. You wanna focus on your offer. Make sure you've got something that is truly compelling to those people who are coming to the website. So if there's anything you can do to improve your offer that's probably going to increase conversion you can also test your copy test different headlines test different pitches. Maybe introduced scarcity make sure you have some element of scarcity in your marketing, why should people purchase not just wash purchase in general? Why should they purchase right now? Like, what's in it for them to sign up now at a huge, huge driver of making decisions for pretty much all of us. I don't know anybody who is completely immune from it. So copy offer scarcity on the conversion side, traffic side, SEO content. Links possibly ads is probably more things. You can do both things. Just remember only two ways to do it. Keep your eyes on the prize increased traffic increase conversions do small thing every day to make progress. All right. Good luck with that feel free to let me know how it goes. I always enjoy getting progress. Updates from

This is your host your daily hosts Chris calico bringing you and new story every day weekly recap on Sundays here. We are episode eight twenty seven ended up week fourteen in season three this week featured a brand of taylormade tease where you can go and customize your own tea and someone will ship it to you. She's doing really well with that business to college graduates who started social media agency. I think they're actually doing seven figures. Now, an epic re-selling story a story about a guy who's reselling, and he's actually reselling headlights tail lights. I really enjoyed working on that one because I used to be a reseller myself. Anyway, this guy is reselling headlights tail lights in what is now a six figure business. A former automotive painter who actually quits his job to now, buy and sell headlights and tail lights full-time. So in this recap minute bring you some comments on earning, passive income, especially through a couple of online course platforms. You to me linked. In addition to a lengthier than usual audio update from previously featured side hustler, and in fact, these two topics work in tandem as they worked together. So I'll play you her update a little bit earlier than usual. And then share some comments on that also on a personal note. I'm doing a tough mudder today with the WS team. So I've been part of this event called world domination summit for the past nine years. Our ninth annual event is coming up in just over two months. I look forward to seeing many listeners there, and we decided a couple of months back that we should do something together that's a little bit. You know, adventurous and challenging and so we chose a tough mudder. Now, we're actually doing the Ivy league it's a five K chorus like five kilometers. So it's not super difficult. But you do go all kinds of mud and there's like thirteen obstacles. And I don't know what to crazy stuff so wishes luck. If you're listening to this later, hopefully, we survived you can follow along on Instagram or see some stories of the event, my Instagram is one hundred ninety three countries one nine three countries. Silence will school is brought to you by fund rise the future of real estate investing. Why should you consider real estate investing? Well, private market real estate has historically provided. Excellent ongoing cash flow, even as it supports long-term growth. The fun rice platform allows you to access high quality high potential private market real estate projects in lots of different markets. The platforms innovations power investor I model by eliminating the high costs in middlemen. That have traditionally weighed down real estate, investing, saving investors, time and money. They've got a fun real time. Reporting feature that allows you to see the development of specific properties in understand. How all the details affects your big picture. If you want to check it out for yourself. Go to fund rise dot com slash side-hustle. That's F U N D R I S, E dot com slash side hustle to have your first three months of fees. Waived. One more thing. I wanted to mention quickly before we go into that update and discussion of passive income. The one hundred side hustles book is coming out on June third. Hi, I'm really excited about this. It's my first book, and at least a year and a half maybe going on two years, and this book is unlike any other books that I've written. So it's my six book, I still can't believe by the way, I've been writing books for decade. I still cannot believe that I get a chance to write books, and then they go out in the world and people read them and some people actually like them care about them. So if that's you I'm so grateful. I really do feel grateful every day that I can be an author and produce the show for you. So this book is different than every other book because it is highly visual. So it's a four color process book, meaning that, you know, every page of the book has color photography on it. Just beautiful photography. We commissioned. I think something like fifteen different photographers all across the country going around and documenting many of the most popular episodes of sottile school during your one. So basically this book is like the podcast in visual form. I mean, it's three hundred pages. It's like a coffee table. Book you can put it out in display it, but you can also read it, it's crazy. It's a book that you can read it's a new feature that we're trying out. But my hope that the book is as you scroll through it. You just see like all these different stories, and you're like, oh, I could do that. Or it's really interesting that that person did this, and my hope is that just inspires more people to kind of inter this rural and and by into this role. I don't just mean like subscribe to my podcast. I mean do something for yourself. You know, find a way to create this kind of passive income for yourself. I no way to create an asset and you can do that without quitting your job. You can do that without going into debt. You already know a lot of things like you have skills already. And so you just need to learn some pretty simple business skills to apply them. It's not like you need to go back to business school. It's not like you need to go into debt. You know? I mean, and if you've been listening for a while you understand that's the message of the show. But I just kind of like to reiterate it because I think it's so important, and I think so many people out there need to know that message into know that it's possible. So I kind of see this book, you know, again, it's called one hundred side hustles as a book possibilities, essentially. It's like a book of like. Wow. You can do this. So I'm looking forward to showing it with you as I said it comes out on June third, and you can pre-order it from anywhere makes a huge huge difference to authors when people Priore their books, I know as a reader, you probably don't care like well, just wait till the book is out. But as an author it makes a big difference because that shows bookstores distributors everybody in the publishing industry Opie people actually interested in this book. So it kind of creates this like positive loop cycle. So we are working on a special. Thank you for everyone. Who does that? Because I know like I said you could just wait till the book is out. But if you take the time to actually pre-order it now what you can do from anywhere any online retailer could be Masan could be something else. Could be your favorite local bookstore to always encourage people to support. And in this case, I do recommend the print version because it's so visual. But of course, there's also an audio version as well. And of course, an e book version for kindle and all of their common formats, so as I said, we're working on a special. Thank you for everyone. Who preordered I'm I'll tell you more about it soon probably next week, but you don't need to wait because anyone who. Who buys the book in any form at any time before it comes out. We'll be eligible for this special. Thank you. You're not going to miss out by pre ordering early. In fact, as I said that makes a big difference to me. So thank you so much in advance. I if you're up for doing that. All right. Speaking of books and speaking of passive income, and creating free for yourself all these strands are going to kind of come together in one amalgamation in this audio update it's gonna set us up for a more extended look at the subject of passive income. So without further ado, I want you to hear this extended update. It's about two minutes from another author. Jessica Brody, let's hand it over to her. Jessica, hey, this is author. Jessica Brody from Portland, Oregon, my side hustle is teaching creative writing online, and it was featured on episode three three since then I've launched two new writing courses the first which came out in November two thousand seventeen is dedicated to learning the foundations of fiction writing and the second which released in October two thousand eighteen teaches writers how to plot and write bestselling novel using only fifteen steps the same fifteen steps. I've been using to structure my own novels for over ten years, so far these two courses combined have earned over forty thousand dollars on you to me dot com and a few months ago, we were invited to release my writing courses on linked in learning also known as Lynda dot com. We are still new to the Linda Lincoln platform. But based on the first few months, we're expecting to earn an extra one thousand to fifteen hundred dollars in passive income per month. Although this has all been very exciting managing my side hustle, and my primary career as a novelist has been difficult in two thousand eighteen launched three new books, and I have another releasing this month in March of two thousand nineteen juggling. The online courses with book writing touring and other promotion has taken its toll on me. And I experienced severe burn out. One thing I've had to learn in the past year is how to maintain balance not just with my primary job, and my side hustle. But also with my personal well-being when you're trying to excel at a job, and aside hustle. It's easy to get

"Then when she went full time with it shot up to five thousand dollars a month. Her client base began to grow with more and more top influencers on YouTube. She's now earning ten thousand dollars a month in profit and recently hired a full time business development partner and part time creative staffer, of course, as with many new ventures. It wasn't always moved sailing as a creative person in a business setting. Don realized that she wasn't prepared for negotiations proposing contracts or setting boundaries in place. So that clients didn't take advantage of her she carefully. He was losing time and money by allowing clients to request numerous revisions without charging extra in return. So through trial and error. She was eventually able to create a system that worked for her for anybody out there wanting to launch a similar business or freelance model Don recommend setting a limit on the number of revisions, you will allow from client. And if they request more outside of that range charge extra make sure you protect yourself. So it's not endless work for one job. And also understand that everything is a working progress. So over time. You'll know what's working or not and can adjust your terms accordingly. She also encourages you to be bold and reach out to who you want to work with don't wait for them to find you because they won't take some time to create a design or pitch that fits your ideal clients Styler brand, and then send them your mockup, give them something to look at rather than just sending your website and portfolio. So that you have value to offer in some way that they might not otherwise, no. That's what she did. Those days watching Disney shows posting to my space have paid off. Well, I often say that anything is possible. You know, there's no guaranteed strategy. Like, this is gonna work. You know, he could end up doing something and not hearing back or just hearing back. Thanks, but no, thanks. But then again, you know, she's built a six figure business from it. And like I said it reminded me of the story of working with Nikki my developer. I'm still working with him after ten years in many projects. So I'm so glad that he reached out. Now, dons advice is just to recap on this point create something that speaks to the client's vision rather than sitting generic portfolio or website. I think that really is key. And I also went to look at her website. And she has this very strong design style. It is really specific. I mean, it looks just like, you know, the kind of thing that you would see going over really well on YouTube with these fashion lifestyle bloggers, so she clearly understands that acetic and is incorporating it, but also adding to it as she goes so clear vision well executed, and you never know. Maybe there's a risk that you need to take a small risk. Of course, not telling you to quit your job. Maybe there is some small risk. You can take would lead to great advancement. Inspiration is good but inspiration with action is better. Today's show notes rolling up Donnelly's work anything else that I mentioned adobe, creative cloud. I know whatever else I talked about in the episode all going to be at side-hustle school dot com slash eight to six episode eight hundred and twenty six my space. Of course, I'm gonna link up my space just in case, you don't know how to find it. It's all going to be on that show notes page, and I'll be back again tomorrow with the weekly recap. Thank you so much. My name is Chris calico, this is side hustle school. From the onward project.

"All right. Great project. Fantastic. I love this so much. I think I've seen it a couple of times online. But now, I'm definitely gonna go and follow it on Instagram. Now a couple of key points here, though, it to do this, right? Like to truly Bill this kind of business. It absolutely can become a sustainable revenue source community that stays with you for years and years, but it's not gonna happen without work. This is definitely not a get rich quick plan. One of the most important things you need to do is. In addition to choosing the topic that you're passionate about she highlighted like it has to be something that you love because you're going to do it over and over. But also, you have to post often, and you have to post consistently you want people to keep coming back to your site over and over you want them to see it as this like flagship resource for that to happen. Most people who are successful with this kind of curatorial approach. They are posting daily sometimes they're posting several post today, and it's not necessarily an overwhelming task. Because what you're posting is essentially discovery I found this thing go and look at it. You're a couple of sentences about it. Maybe here's a paragraph or two about it. And sometimes it could be more sometimes less. But it is somewhat about him. It's about finding your voice, the right, topic, etc. But then just doing it over and over and the second key pathway something that I mentioned briefly in the story each time. She shared someone's work. They would share her right up with their own audience. And then some of those people would subscribe and become regular readers. So that is absolutely the right strategy in this approach. I would just caution. You and say, it's not always so simple. Like not every feature you do is going to share with their audience. And and you know, bring in this subscribers. It's the kind of thing that increases in ramps up over time for a long time, you really just need to be focused on doing the work. And so it's not so much. You know, if you build it, they will come. But in this case, you have to do a lot of building. That's my only caution, but I think is wonderful business model, and it does still work. There are still people doing it in lots of different ways. So I will leave you with that today. More to come tomorrow. Of course every day from there on out inspiration is good but inspiration with action is so much better. If you're taking action on something that you believe in today's show notes, including links to the sites I mentioned in the introduction as well. As Danielle's work. Of course, we'll be at side hustle school dot com slash eight one eight at is for episode eight hundred eighteen we are rolling along posting daily hosting consistently because I believe in this mission. And because I care about you. I want it to be helpful and useful to you. All right. That's offer. Now, thanks so much. My name is Chris calico. This is school. From the onward project.

So then as the story goes he decided to make his own or in this case, he would take the Zoli to the people Chris move to Portland Oregon few years earlier for college. He became a micro enterprise developer for the region's only Latino market hall and business incubator he'd seen and helped dozens of new businesses grow. Not was time to build his own. He started making large batches of his puzzle recipe in shared commissary kitchen, even bought a food handler's license and purchased a bike powered cart that he could take to the local farmers. Market and other public events. It took several months to put those pieces together when he set up his first event the public responded, positively it was cold in Portland that fall and Chris's Hotz Abe Rizzoli was just the thing to keep people cozy while they were enjoying outside of it for months, Chris drove his car to events in sold out generating thousands and sales, but he dreamed bigger he wanted to get his position starters in stores. One big step was in rolling in the getting your recipe to market program. That was run by his cities, small business development center over the course of fourteen weeks. Chris created that Brant puzzling to people it was a busy time. He spent eight thousand dollars kitchen equipment jars labels packaging for larger shipments, inventory, he labored through dozens of regulations to make his product shelf stable without destroying its quality. He didn't however find a co Packer the way that some of our other stories have done. A co Packer is a company that can help prepare your food product. You give them the recipe, they mix the ingredients prepared for sale and Chris. As he spoke to several, but none of them seemed a great fit. So he decided to just stick to his commentary kitchen. A lot of that initial investment was on a jar filler and label applicator. So even though he was doing it all himself. He still had some nice gear helping him do it faster at the end of the course, he was able to pitch his product to new seasons market's a regional grocery chain. They love his Zoli starters filled out a purchase order and tested the product out in a few stores. A few stories became four then seven then ten Crispin a large portion of the week making his soup. But he always saves some time to keep pitching over the next several months to the people found its way into the local stores food, fight, new foods market and elephants. Delicatessen the growth was slow but intentional Kristen wanna risk losing quality in his product. So we kept making it by hand ensuring honored his memory of Sunday night dinners. The biggest driver of growth was consumer demand wasn't hard to generate Christel participated in local grassroots events selling his jar Zoli and getting locally minded consumers amped up for delicious, hearty stew, and they loved it. Especially the Mexican community around town the more. Customers bought the more retailers purchase to put on their shelves in two thousand seventeen Zoli to the people had its first hundred thousand dollar year in twenty eight teen the brand generated nearly two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, but Chris isn't settling down yet, nor is he hoarding the success for himself. He's looking to develop a manufacturing facility of his own to help scale production properly. He's also hoping to use that facility as a job training site for him. It was never just about the money. It was also about bringing his style. Minnesota Mexican community to life and then using that experience uplift others. Food

"Workspace mental conditioning powerful, including our environment. So use that to your advantage and three find ways to create structure, accountability and human contact's when you're not working in an office with regular hours and colleagues this leaves a big gap in those areas feel want to be intentional about eliminating those gaps again structure accountability and human contact, which is exactly what he's trying to address with his tool focused mate. Speaking of being intentional Taylor. And his teams focus for twenty nineteen is to turn. Focus mate into a sustainable business. He staying on track with this goal working productively to make it happen without distractions. Okay. So I wanted to do a little website critique of this project, if they tend to do from time to time, I really think it's such a great idea. Obviously, he's helping hundreds of people already presumably many more to come. So well done Taylor and three things. I liked about the website first of all really clear structure for how it works because you take a look at focus may dot com. Which of course, we will link up in the show notes, you kind of understand right away. What it's about. So there's not a lot there to really distract you, which of course, is good. Because that's kind of the key promise if the whole tool to help you work without distractions second, I also liked on the about page. He basically said if you've got any questions or comments feedback, Email me personally? And here's my Email address. I like that touch. There's also a photo of him, which is cool. So it creates this whole like relatable structure with the tool, which was going to help you. And here's the person who made it and the third thing. I like was he has some really specific statistics to kind of back up his claim. So a lot of businesses. They have really generic claims. Hey, this tool is going to help you or this is going to help you be more productive. That's great. But is it really is. I was going to help you be more focused. Okay. But how how is it worked for other people? What are the measurable results? And so he shows that fifty one percent of tested users have converted to paying customers and active users are booking eleven fifty minute appointments each week. Now, why does that matter basically, it shows that the tool is really working for the people who try it like there's a really high buy rate there. So it doesn't mean it's going to work for everybody. But it does show that this is a proven solution for a lot of people. And so if you're in that situation, you know, the odds of you being able to benefit from it are pretty decent, you know, at least fifty fifty now in the spirit of constructive. Critique just one thing that I wondered about so several things I like only one thing that I've wondered about a bit was this service requires you to use your webcam, and basically like have the video turned on and the other person can kind of see there. And I think for some people that creates an immediate resistance or an objection or just kind of a block. And so on the website. It says, you know, it's got the tips of how to use. It says be present inactive keep your webcam turned on the entire session. Use chat to share your progress on task during your session. And acknowledged your partner's progress to to me, just as a social engineering thing. I wonder if there's something they could do to provide some reassurance to anybody who might be concerned by that. Personally, when I think could I use some help with accountability and productivity. Yes. Do I want somebody watching me on video the whole time while I work. No, I really don't. So that was just my impression overall very positive impression. Just that one thing I kind of wondered about so not telling him how to run his business because obviously he's doing really well. And we wish him every success here from satisfied school. Hopefully, some of our listeners can go and check it out. And hey listeners. Hope you enjoyed this episode inspiration is good but inspiration with action is so much better. It's my goal to encourage you each step along the way, especially with this new year as we start new projects as we work to kind of get closer to the goals that we believe in anything we can do to work intentionally to focus and to proceed without distractions that can only help get us closer to those goals. Okay. Our show notes. For today's episode are at side-hustle school dot com slash seven five one. That is for episode at seven hundred. Fifty one. I hope you'll join me again tomorrow and all this week with a bunch of fun stuff that we are rolling out. I'm so excited to be able to do this for you much more is on the way. Once again, my name is Chris calico, and this is side hustle school.

That side hustle was not highly profitable, but the next one got more traction it h fourteen. He launched head ki a working key for motorized scooters yet enough traffic on his website that he was proud to receive a cease and desist letter from go a giant in the industry. The shutdown didn't damper his spirits. He continued to learn after school and experiment wherever he could. But like so many of us, the draw of a regular job eventually began to overshadow his entrepeneurship spirit. So when Greg graduated from college, he took a job as a corporate civil engineer in Pensacola, Florida. And for a while he was happy. You had a reliable salary. He was working with talented professionals, and he even got to go out to the oil rigs once in awhile. But the sense of satisfaction didn't last long. Greg quickly found himself dreaming of side hustles after work, Benny found himself dreaming of side hustles during work. So in two thousand thirteen, Greg started selling wholesale items on Amazon dot com. What was he selling? Well, one of his most popular items was hooded baby ropes. Next question, why baby ropes? Well, Greg, spent a lot of time browsing on Amazon. He would look at various subcategories. Then he would check on strong sales rankings to determine if any particular item was hot, and then see if he could acquire that item somehow to resell for a profit. It turned out that those baby ropes were a hot commodity. Those and other items became all you can think about, and he knew he couldn't stay corporate job for long Greg, in his wife, Elizabeth were itching to explore an adventure. They continue to grow the business except they quit their jobs, sold everything, and moved to Bali, Indonesia to do it. Now that little business as interesting as it is, isn't what our story today is about. Because while they were there while he was working on this business, scrolling through pages on Amazon, creating complex excel spreadsheets, doing a bunch of math and going through all the data to find products to sell. It was difficult and confusing. Greg thought there had to be a better way he dreamed of an app that would help him organize and analyze the data that was already available across Amazon dot com. He figured that if his imaginary tool could crawl. Digest that data onto a single page. He could speed up his product discovery
