"Apple TV notifying you that someone is at the door identifying the person at the door potentially if they're in your photos, showing you an image and then allowing you to bring it up full screen interrupting what you're watching on your TV I love this I think this is so cool. Yeah. There's that I am excited about the possibilities of imagine if I can say, whereas Richard, I can totally cheated hide and go seek with my kids. I as a primitive for me to be able to deal with true recognition not phone. Yeah. This is a huge one. The other thing that they're doing with the doorbell scenario is if you have a home pod, then Syria's going to announce on the homebody who is at the door I'm not sure I'm so excited about that one. I'm not a voice first house I. Don't know when the ladies all start to talk to me in the background did start to get a little invasive interesting. There's an edit that our listeners won't here where we had to pause because my phone was ringing and why did we have to plies because not only was the phone ringing but the lady in the box next. To my phone was telling me through all of my devices who is calling. So I'm big into the home notifications I. Think this is a cool thing, and if I had a homebody which I don't. But if I had one, I think this would be a cool way of using it. Well, we talked about Apple TV briefly so I just wanted to mention one more thing. You're also going to be able to just call up any of your home kit cameras on Apple. TV. Either Siri or through the Control Center to get into this whole view that will show you the cameras that you have and allow you to look at them individually I think that's incredibly useful. That's everything that happened on apple's side Google also had an event it was let's Just say a less polished Google's event consisted of basically to remote presentations. One of them was the head of the smart. Home. Division, I forget what her name is. Michelle something literally giving a power point presentation remotely over camera. I just don't understand a company this big doing this so poorly, but they had some announcements I will admit I knew that Google was having an event. Even today. I went to Google and I said, hey, tell me about the Google Smart Home Summit and the first ten results was people talking about the fact that Google was going to have an event but it seems that it slipped by and I guess if the first presentation was slide whipping the attendees then I guess that's a good reason. Let's run through some of the things that they did announce though. So one of the things that's interesting just like we are getting that adaptive lighting from Apple Google is going to be introducing gentle sleep and wake settings for lighting I think this is pretty cool. This is similar to stuff that you can do with you today and other lighting systems, but this would allow any vendors lights to work presumably either through color changing or even just through dimming so that you can create these sleep and wake routines I think this is pretty cool. Not really something that apple offers as an equivalent yet anyway I don't know if this sort of thing will be included in their adaptive lighting or. Not, the cool thing about this is that it does not require any support from the vendor. It's just going to work I love this idea as we talked about before I'm a huge fan of circadian rhythm lighting ride things that help us from a health standpoint. The fact that you're going to be able to have local control that's part of the goodwill t for their smart home and it's going to work with any light you have. If they get this right, this could be a huge win for Google and ultimately really this is not that hard of a script to right if you think about it change color between these two points on the Kelvin's and do it between these two timeframes. This is really smart. It's a bit of differentiator for them I think I'm looking forward to seeing how they're doing this. I've been really happy with the automation stuff. The Google home has as a way of automating your home. The problem is it still so limited even still with these announcements, they talked about their readiness to support all of the old works with net stuff, and they're still not there yet. We still don't have routines based on the status of different devices or anything like that. They are adding home and away routines. This is really smart if anything can. Help Monitor your homeless or awareness. It is the nest devices, right so the nest devices and their home away status will actually be available as a trigger for routines. That's a great thing I love that they're doing that. I think that's something that will help a lot of people as they think about ways of writing routines to kind of showed things down if everybody leaves or when people are home to make sure that there's proper lighting the alarm is disabled and stuff like that. I'm not happy at all with Google automations there limited in my mind they're non existent birthright. If you cannot trigger based on emotion sensor then you have no business talking about. Or Autumn. I want my smart house to be adaptive I want it to use the context I wanted to sense whatever sensors I throw at it. I wanted to use that as information to make intelligent decisions based on what's going on the house, and then I want my house to react right you can do that and other platforms you could do that. Even Amazon's platform. Yes. Even on their. Cloud based stuff you can support visit be based motion sensors, contact sensors, Q..

"Control and automation brought to you by the digital. Media Zone I'm Richard and I'm joined by Chris Young also known in some circles as Home Kit Geek hosting home Nick Dot Com and a youtube channel and a twitter account hate on Chris Yeah I get around to I'm doing great how you doing today Richard I am doing. Well, you know we had ww D. C., and we had a lot of discussion about all the announcements and I wanted to spend some time talking about those with you today. Absolutely. Yeah. This was the Christmas comes early for us on the Home Kit camp. So yes. Yeah indeed and there was a good amount of home kit talk. They've also come up with a really good way of packaging their home offerings together in a way that creates a more approachable product category for Apple I think apple did what apple does they created a ecosystem play that provides more value us the customers, the deeper we get in their play. Right? Some may not like it others. May like it more. It's what they do. It's what you in what they do hand. It's what they're good at. Well, we'll definitely touch more on net. But before we do that, let's hit some news and updates. There's not a ton to go over but there's some things that I wanted to point out and I stop I wanted to talk about is rash of Smart Home Services Shutting down. Either this spring or that have been announced this spring and some of this stuff is already passed, but there's some stuff coming up in certainly with the little game of chicken that we've been playing with wink over the last couple of months. It's been kind of top of mind as people look at the smart home in wonder will heck. What is it safe to invest in when I don't? Know if the service that this company offers is going to be available or if they're going to support this piece of hardware two or three years down the line. Yeah. It's a really interesting time where companies that I think got into smart home business what four or five years ago with expectations of a certain business model I think they're realizing that perhaps they made some bad assumptions shall we say? Yeah. That's a fair way of putting it and I think part of the is that most companies sister and understand the costs associated with maintaining cloud services and maintaining software and hardware over the long term after you've sold the hardware, the I, I'm GonNa talk about is signify and they're Philips Hue Line. They announced early this year or late last year that they were going to retire their first. Of the Phillips Bridge and what This meant was that you are no longer going to be able to use the Philips Hue Bridge the circular one that they had before home kit was out. This is an old device I mean, I think this thing is like eight years old by now if you're if not longer because you was really one of the first smart home brands that gained popularity shortly after nest, so they have shut down the. Services that support bridge I believe you could still use the old software with the old bridge inside your home to control stuff locally. But really what's the point of that because then you don't have integration with third parties and now even Google assistant we learn had still been working through local integration, but Google assistant has now cut that off in. June. So Freddie much this is for all intents and purposes a pretty coaster with lights in it. It is, but I think it's one of those things that you have to look at what did you actually buy Oh yeah. For me personally, it doesn't affect me at all. Of course, my Philips Hue Bridge was the second generation I've actually got two of them because I hit the maximum amount of fifty lightbulbs. Issues my biggest complaint is that you can't have to hubs connected to your Amazon or Google Account, but from A. Standpoint almost an an I don't care I agree with you. I'm not upset about this. It is just kind of a sign of the time another one that shutdown this spring was Sirius Xm shutting down automatic. You know we had Yuba one of the founders of automatic on this show years ago. This was a product that I thought was really cool because it helped pull your vehicle into your larger smart home ecosystem when serious bought this I questioned what they were going to do with it. Well, the answer is pretty clear nothing they did close to nothing with it. They tried to re product is it a little bit and make it a part of their other offerings for vehicles, but it just never really took off for them and they neglected to keep it up to date. Now, if you had one, you have the ability to turn it in and get a rebate. For it depending on how old it was it was a little bit. So they did the right thing for the most part but this is frustrating to me because this seemed like a really cool product that through an acquisition ended up in the hands of someone that just didn't know what the hell to do with it unfortunately graveyards full. That's how these things go. Right I was never a customer of automatic or Xm so far I've. been reasonably lucky and calling. But yeah, I, think that we're going to continue to see more things like that. We're going to continue to see more acquisitions happen the market starts to consolidate and we're gonNA start to see especially as things like chip connected home over Ip start to take form older versions of be not supported older versions. Z. Wave not supported all that's going to start happening right? It's just something to look forward to know. I don't know that. I, look forward to it but I hear you another one that just Kinda. slinked away without any pomp and circumstance I think they tried to close the doors without anyone noticing was a smart camera manufacturer called. Guard. Zillah. You could buy these at retail I. Think they were really inexpensive compared to other connected camera products used a cloud service that they turned off shut the company down never let anybody know they didn't even let their retailers. No there were retail partners that were still selling this product when it couldn't be used and we can thank consumer reports for uncovering this Oh i feel dirty just listening to that. Yes Oh. Yes. Can you believe that I've never even heard of guard Zillow, but that's gross. It really is makes the industry look bad. I'm really not happy about this. Let's turn that on its head and look at a company that's doing things right led Vance. One of the brands that they own is Sylvania kind of a mainstay in the lighting space for years and years, and we've talked with them. We've had them on the show we talked with him. About their smart plus lighting line. I've always thought that it was very confusing when they rebranded smart plus under Sylvania that they had the old lead Vance Light Affi- line now also known as smart plus and then they had the new Sylvania's smart plus stuff. There was Bluetooth designed to work with Hunkin and they were branded smart plus and you had to make sure if you're looking at boxes or looking online that you were buying the right thing they are I'll say. I'm retiring these legacy light, affi- devices and services as far as I understand they are no longer manufacturing and no longer actively selling though retail channels will still have stuff that they can sell and get rid of from the line that requires the hub. You can still buy it. You can use it with smart things you can use it with other hubs. It doesn't require that you use their bridge or hub. There's still valuable useful products but their own service if you used the smart plus or light fi APP that is going to stop working now when you might ask August twenty. Twenty one you have time. You don't have.

"Chris young at number thirty two that is raised on country the lady antebellum released their seventh studio album on November fifteenth they said this album reminded them of their sound when they first started out and their song what if I never get over you has steadily been climbing the charts well this is a song that it's funny you know we read a time for this project and of course I feel like this always happens it kind of happened with you look good as well last minute the song's just kind of you know you get pitch some just amazing songs here in Nashville and this one came in and it fit a slot that we that we didn't have and is a song that Ryan heard he also wrote you look good he and John green lower belts and Sam Ellis road together and I'd asked Laura thank that week before he'd written with her and I said we you send us some stuff you know just send us that we're bored listen and everything I listen to every song gets pitched my wife just because you never know if like you hear those like stories of someone passing on you know the dance or something and and so this came in the first thing I did when I sent it out to everybody was like I think this would be a great do it and yes we try to do at and this is probably my favorite thing we've put out you know since I need you now I just that's kind of the sound I feel like that we were really that we started from you know was that back and forth of that long it's been a really long time since we've released a song that is you know it's mid tempo ballad that you're getting that both perspectives of of a heartbreak and so you know we we really have not released a song like that in a long time and so it feels really.

"You to change the way I wanted to be consistency if it is. completely falling apart next year in this team is for twenty. or something crazy like that if we don't see like the movies that are being made when it comes to the pitching staff or things that we want that's fine but I I don't think it's on recent will be like okay try it again. and with a shorter leash you guys can't figure this thing out then I'll move on from it but until then the players seem to like give Kapler for the majority of it let's get rid of Chris young. yes that's an easy sell. and then you just kind of sit back and hope that you are right because that's what I really think it's not like this is we keep trying to make this front office like it's dismantled were like Middleton doesn't trust Clinton again you know due to make Phil doesn't trust Milton this is like trying all of power going on not dismissing that either but just from the evidence that we've seen it looks like. you don't give out an extension for three years to your general manager in your president. if you're not sure about them. you know that's that that's the thing that we keep forgetting in this process as they still gave out contracts because they think they're doing the right thing in there on the roads to that. and we don't know what wisdom is been told the client tack in terms of spending or whatever we're having an understanding of the bigger picture like this was always about getting Bryce Harper for thirteen years. and it was about getting J. T. here. and that's the only kind of peculiar thing in there the fastest rebuild ever and maybe they bit off a little more they can come true and they go all right let's reassess this as we get into next season and see what we can do here so. can't believe I've come to that conclusion but honestly I still like option one of keeping the band together at the end of this if you are going to fire somebody. if you don't believe in this team's direction firing Gabe Kapler second changes. firing your general manager is going to do a lot of things and turning shaping this roster for now and for the future because that's still to me the biggest issue but I'm willing willing. for a little bit to just give this one more season half the season. see where you're at with one more off season to see how you can build around harboring Hoskins NJG. then make sure that they're also not leading off. for the majority of the season as well eight eight eight seven two nine ninety.

Jacob DeGrom of New York Mets wins NL Cy Young Award

"The Cy Young award winner. Anyone who debated or thought other than that doesn't understand baseball or follow it closely or not he got twenty nine of the thirty first place votes. Max Scherzer got one. And of course, degrom got that voters second place votes. Scherzer's got all twenty nine other second place votes. So they kind of ran away from the field. Aaron Nola the Phillies. More power to 'em had a phenomenal season. Good for Aaron got twenty seven. Of the thirty third place votes. She got one fourth two fourth place votes and one fifth place while was far ahead of Kyle Freeland who finished fourth in the Cy Young bounding but good for Jacob degrom. He wins the NL and the winner in the American League was Pike's. Now took it over Justin Burland race a lot. Closer new American League snout got seventeen first place votes. Berliner got thirteen. So is actually pretty close. But I will tell you why both Blake's now and Jacob degrom won their respective Cy youngs. Three letters e r. A for all the turnover in baseball and the over analytics of baseball and the new stats they have for baseball. The key stat in pitching is still earned run average who on the AL crown for ERA this year that would be breaks now who won the earned run crowned in the National League. And it wasn't close. Jacob degrom that why those two guys are deci young. So I was glad see kudos to the voters voted in these and have different guys vote for different awards and the like, so I give credit to those who voted for those two pitchers because they were bad their best pitchers in their league. This year they deserve to win. They both rightfully get their Cy youngs. Why because they had the best earned run averages any American League. Now, I think it was maybe somewhat telling the Phillies made a move. They changed their pitching coach. I actually thought recruits did a pretty good job this year the last couple of years under peak mechanic, and I wasn't a big fan of his pitching coach. I thought the police should have made a move there prior to they never did delay let mechanic go, and then they put a whole new staff together and elevated recruits on gig Kappler staff and a broaden Chris young who hadn't been doing scouting work for the Astros his first year as a pitching coach. He was the assistant pitching coach here in Philadelphia. And I guess he opened some is and impressed some people and they wanted to do something to change his coaching staff. Some many decided would be at the pitching coach position. So they let go and Chris young will be the Phillies pitching coach for this upcoming year. I don't quite get it. I don't understand it. I don't think Kratz Cranach was the biggest problem this year. Although I did go back and check the Phillies numbers again. Tonight. And I had forgotten how mediocre they were on the pitching side. This side of the guy who finished in third place in the Cy Young Aaron Nola the league ERA this year. Average dead average that's detrimental. That's not great. If your average you gotta be above average. If you want to have any kind of a winning season the league average for earned run average this year. Was four point zero two in the National League here. The Philly pitchers that had ER as above. Are under four point zero to that Curtis who I I always liked Curtis. And I don't quite understand why they didn't give him a chance this past year. He's a lefty us top one lefties, and I thought he should have been given a better chance. He was only in seven games Ziara was sub to at one eighty six do Brera Mosul. Be part of the bullpen again. This year. Aaron Nola initiate who. I know is the IRA ended up at two two point five nine, but I'm tired, and I don't I don't care about knee shack anymore. He's got issues. He's not tough. He doesn't want the ball. He was great at home for long stretches this season. But he was also injured. He's blatantly overpaid going into this year. His ERA says decent year, my eyes. Tell me not really so Arana was solid at two seven three. He'll be back again this year cer- Anthony to ninety five he may be closer feed. Not he's going to be a key component near Penn. Avalon who came over in the trade didn't pitch a whole hell of a lot five and two thirds innings. But at least he did keep his ERA onto four Tommy hunter who I didn't think cat a good year. But his ERA was under four at three point eight zero. Didn't get as many strikeouts. He doesn't walk is a game. Crazy doesn't walk a ton. But I'll give them enough credit that he got it under four and Aaron Morgan at three eight three and Jake Arrieta three nine six so Ariana which just below just above average this year just above. And by the way, I expected a lot more but better than the rest of the pictures. Davis four one five not good enough. Zach f one four thirty six not good enough. Delo Santos who dominated and AAA got a couple of shots in the big leagues. Including a couple of starts. Four seven four. Not good enough. Nick Vada four seven seven not good enough Vinnie Velazquez, four eighty five not good enough. Jake Thompson who they moved on from Hector Narus actors Hecht is the kind of pitcher is gonna get manages wired. Gabe Kaplan is going to get fired because act the narrows, they're probably it'd be a couple of other contributing reason. But Hector narrates will be part of it five ten, and I know he got hot at the end of the year and actually gave him some good outings in September. You wanna make captain Ariza? Key component your pen next year, you go there. I'd rather not. And so on and so forth down to the Jared. I'd coughs in the world and the mine hall. We Milner at a world. Just not good enough to Phillies don't have enough pitching. And nobody's talking about the Phillies upgrading their pitching during this off season. It's all about Harper and Machado, and if not are Machado, we only get one. What are the other moves going to be they need upgrade the pitching? And just making Chris young. They're pitching coach isn't going to be enough for my money. So have you wanna get on on the Phillies Aaron Nola congrat- vision? Third in the Cy Young had a hell of a season wanted a better starting seasons. We've seen in a while. You gotta go back to Lee and holiday and hamels in the light. We're good couple of removes for years removed from having a to ace and affiliates. Did have a ace in Aaron Nola this year didn't quite get the Cy Young, but he did finish third which he should get props for eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four Steve from the Poconos checks in. "Arnie, and this is players conversations with country music artists about their love of sports. This week's guest is the always entertaining. Chris young who is fabulous other than the fact that he is a Dallas Cowboys fan which goes against every grain of my body. But that's okay. I'm going to let it slide. Here's what you need to know about Chris young. He won Nashville star in the fourth season, and by his standards it took him a while. Right. To know if he was actually going to get that big break after that happened. So finally in January of this past year, he kicked off his losing sleep two thousand eighteen world tour losing sleep is his tenth number one single, and I can tell you from experience that sports stars. They all have superstitions of some sort, right? Chris young shared a superstition that he's got a with me on this episode. And it definitely takes the cake. It's one of the craziest things I've ever heard. But it's pretty great. You've got to check it out. We started this conversation talking about sports, which was great. And until we talked about our two teams. You know, our huge rivals. But it was a lot of fun in the process. So here's my conversation with Chris young. I hope you like it. So Chris young I'm thankful that you didn't walk in here with the big Dallas Cowboys hat on because I was preparing myself that that could be what happened all the way from the elevator. There were two Philadelphia. Eagles fans. You know, this is this show themselves days like this. The season. They look at me. Normally I could have done the cool name where you guys don't have any rings. And now I do that anymore. I have a couple of friends in particular that are huge huge eagles fans one who's lost a bet to me before and had to wear pink. Tony Romo jersey. That's amazing. Blue when they win the Super Bowl. He was like you can never say it again, they're so so heavy. And Gifford them. That was a crazy crazy run wasn't it. I was at that game. And I just remember being on the field afterwards and the confettis fallen and all that stuff. And I was waiting to do interviews. But I I'm just looking at Nick foles and looking at that whole team they add something really special going on. I mean their chemistry was evident. It reminded me a little bit of. Right before flacco got paid when he had that just insane run like no turnovers and just this perfect window of time for him. And I felt like that's kind of what that was with Nick foles. Yeah. And then the whole quarterback situation. There is just fascinating to me. The fact that you've got Carson Wentz. And you know that you would do anyway. Anyway, I digress. They're not. That's not our team. Team work. I was and I say that because I am a Washington Redskins fan. So that's where I grew up. So our rivalry is probably one of the best in all of sports. Although we have nothing to show for it for the past two decades for sure it is. No, we don't either. It's really funny. We we really and truly do have one of the craziest rivalries and one of my best friends was telling you is a Washington fan. And so we try every year to go to the the Cavs game against Washington at the stadium in Dallas because got several friends that that live there, and we just kind of go and hang out and every year. He finds the biggest loudest PISA gear that he fine. And sits right in the middle of all of us Cowboys fans. Thanks, dude. That's awesome. What is it like to be a Cowboys fan at that stadium for that game? When you go each year. Okay. It's incredible. Yeah. The the stadium is insane. Just the sheer amount of money that would thing like Jerry Jones was not afraid to spend on that. But it's it's a little wild because it's quieter than a lot of other stadiums..

"In the ass on the way out if we remember i so it and even bobby valentine had had success on different continents so gaetan this guy's doing something that he's never ever done before and to me that's that's going to take time i do not expect i think out of the gate over the first couple months even you'll who are going and i know you really like to got a real find see all but at the same time though i mean there's something you know that's why you're seeing all these these these articles about like the fresh new face in the in in the way managers should look and everything else so sometimes it's nice to have a guy that doesn't know he just creates he's not he's not stuck in his ways and he's he refuses to adjust or to change because he's just stubborn heat heat maybe maybe this this could be exactly what they're looking for and yes every guys gonna make make it works but she can make mistakes still win games build the last tells the dick wanna win games because the manager it does what he's going to do i tell you this what what he's going to do is i think he's going to actually put his neck out there even more than the other guy it than farrell pharaoh would just sit there lefty right left you right away just best place while i want to i don't want to make it easy on their bullpen and he would say things that confused upbeat writers or he would just throw it numbers and talk about your jesus why did you let chris young hit when he got trevor shaun the bench wealthy look at righty leftish what slim power number layton games the seventh inning beyond with radio in it are usually sunday night number guy christopher in this country country route it was gas letting now give the point is that you throughout like numbers in matchups in left knee righty and stats to the point where people just spot and they would just like oh would go you know why he let robbie scott face me go cabrera because robbie scott first right he's a begin first left these now now you put your best pitchers out there against.

"Roster i think they gotta do wednesday night at midnight or whatever it is i would expect personally the chris young be left off which i don't know how jones going to handle this because i don't know how he's going to ever called chris young instead he rose self some bad barnes seeming hawke wants talking about tough conversations right with his boys because i think you've got to keep rajai i think you've got to keep miro for defense with with with diverse you've got to keep hold and new is on that roster so the one thing chris young brought to the table this year and the reason the john absolutely love them is every time he had he had a a lefty out there he used them because of his power against lefthanded pitching especially at fenway park what's his batting average this year which is ops against lefthanded not good not good terrible we looked at up to the once yup right the once skill set that he brought to the table that really help you out as a fillin guy was that he no longer can do that so where do you use him why did you say and what are you use he john's already come out and say you can go with eleven pitchers so that that to me squeezes out one position player and again these guys like like you have to cover yourself in this infield you know what i mean when you think about it i mean you go haley ramirez yana what the hell you've got their initial was always point per joy you have no idea right right deborah's you've got to have a defensive replacement and nunez if he's able to go you got to put him on if he's able to go you've it's just a pinch hitter and if he does he takes over that chris young role but he's fertile limited if he can't right now there's a real question mark whether you're going to get enough adding nunez are you will keep him around a pinch it maybe once or twice in a fivegame series yes yes because i would expect verlet under although hint chosen announced it yet apparently but berlin a goes game one i nunez on the bench shot in asia pinchhitter for leo late in the game you know and.
