"So in the Netflix show, which is created by scandal producer Chris Van Dusen. They could be more explicit about it. They can be More in your face a little bit, and I will confess to even as I was expecting sex to be a part of the show because it's on Netflix and they have the ability to do that. I was surprised by how explicit it was. I had thought maybe this would be something I've walked with my parents at some point, and I don't think that will be happening. Ever. They can watch it on their own. That's fine. What was surprising to me? Okay, Tweets I love Raju Tin. So much as a longtime romance novel, fan Romance books are already a huge share of the publishing market, not surprised. It was so successful on TV. We're talking two varieties. Caroline, Frankie, Jacqueline Coley of Rotten Tomatoes and John Horn from KPCC. Well, John, we're talking about TV here in the Emmy Awards happened back in September. They were part remote part in person. As we look towards the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Will those awards ceremonies follow a similar model? Your guess is this good? It's mine. I mean, I think it's gonna be a real interesting question. The Oscars have been pushed back to the end of April. The nominations are middle of March, so everything's been pushed back a while and something we kind of touched on but didn't say explicitly. The Oscars changed their rules for eligibility. You used to have to premiere in a movie theater or to film festival to be eligible, and the academy said Given the pandemic, we're gonna change the rules so that You can now premiere on the streaming service. You could do it some other things to qualify. So what That means is that That the kinds of films that are in contention now outside of the ceremony is radically different. I mean, we touched on this a little bit. But if you start looking at the movies that I think a lot of people think, are contenders for best picture. It's one night in Miami, which is an Amazon film trial. The Chicago seven, which the Netflix film It was originally gonna be released by Paramount and Netflix bought it. Ma Rainey's Black bottom Netflix film, so That kinds of movies that are really rising to the top are almost all streaming films and then how they're going to the ceremony. I don't know. I mean, listen, I've never liked the red carpet. I don't like the way it objectifies women and fashion above creative content. So if they were able to pull it off without that, that would be great. But you know the Grammys. We're going to try some sort of virtual show where they're going to be performances in and around Los Angeles. And even with that accommodation for the pandemic, they realized they couldn't pull that off. So they postpone their show. I don't know how the Oscars gonna pull it off. I thought the Emmys did well enough given what they had, but obviously the ratings are going to be way down. And they've been trending down anyway. And though the whole pageantry which a lot of people like not me, um, of celebrities, you know, wearing fancy clothes is certainly going to be lost. Well, Disney Plus have recently released one division. This is a new TV syriza that follows Marvel's superheroes, Rwanda maximum and vision, and Here's the trailer from that. Wonder Vision..

"Societies divided by color until the king fell in love with one of us. I love your grace conquers all E believe that remains to be seen. King may have chosen his queen. You may have elevated us from novelties and their eyes to know dukes and royalty. Not that same whim. You make just as easily change his mind. Um, so there's Lady Danbury, saying romance will solve all social problems, all societal problems and the Duke Being a little more clear eyed about What it takes to achieve equality. Can you talk about that scene and why it may be pivotal in the Serie is, I don't think that in terms of what we would expect to imply it would necessarily come to bear in the series because one of the things about being the Duke of Hastings Is that you know everybody bows to that title and that power when I saw that I didn't quite read it the same way. I think it may be is a nod to Yes, This is an interracial couple, possibly, but I think if anything, it's you know, solving all problems just in terms of the family reputation. Simon's father was not the kindness, man. And you know that reputation I think might have preceded him. But yes, if you wanted to look at the nod that way I could. I could certainly see that. But I also don't see Chris Van Dusen really kind of going all in on that angle, you know, because it's still like I said, a fantasy. You know, right? And so should it be talked about more. I mean, it's an interesting idea that you just take it for granted that there were Black people in positions of social power in Regency England. Um When? In fact that wasn't the case, but It's an interesting idea it is and I think that historically and I'm not talking about, you know, history in terms of world history I'm talking about in terms of entertainment, television and film. It's a very white space, you know, Masterpiece, which you know, I think a lot of people would consider you know the BBC treatments of these types of stories to be kind of the main gold standard for the form. You certainly don't see many black characters in these spaces. And even in Downton, you know, the main black character that you saw was explained as he's a jazz artist. You know, from America, you know, So when you look at these period pieces they're accepted to be. Trails of white spaces Now recently, that's changed. Like if you look at shows like the Great on Hu Lu, members of Katherine's court are black, you know, not just black, but they're also like other people of color. And I would say those air more like we're going to cast this the way we're gonna cast it because this is a fantasy. And in the world of fantasy, then you know we're going to just basically put who we want in here because you know who's who's to say, and this is our vision, and I think to a certain degree, you do have that you know in Britain because it is a fantasy, you know it is Regency. But it's Regency Romance. The audience for romance novels isn't just white people, lots of women of color and people of color. Read romance. And so why shouldn't they have a place in these faces when especially, you know when you're looking at a novel like this now, having said that the thing that's interesting to me isn't the fact that you have people of color in this world. I mean, not interesting that notable. It's the nature of the casting. You know, there's been a lot of discussion about this. The fact that the major black characters that are in bridge or 10, and I include Queen Charlotte and Simon and you know his aunt, they're all lighter complexioned. And there's a lot of discussion right now about colors and Hollywood in terms of casting. There are a lot of actors who are getting plum roles, and this has happened for a really long time that they all seem to be lighter skinned or, you know, bi racial verses. No darker skin doctors and you can see this in Bridger 10 like they tend to be in the background. Or they tend to be in roles where they're not part of the Central Social social Circle. That's interesting. Also, I would add that you don't really get a full picture of these characters. Except for the Duke of Hastings off Simon, you don't really get A full three dimensional picture of the black characters, including the queen. You don't know really much about them at all. Where, as you know a lot about the white characters. Exactly. That's a that's a real issue, and I think that's something that they can probably develop more in season two along with other things, Let's talk about the sex. Sure, there is a lot of it in the especially in the latter part of the Syriza and you have written an article. Basically saying how the sex is bad. And without getting into too much detail because this is a family show. Why is it so bad? When you have a show, like you know, like Bridger 10 or any kind of show, even in a space like on premium cable. There's an ability to show more that I think that for very long time producers have gone in a way of some sort of, I wouldn't necessarily say. Being explicit for its own sake, But I do think that there is a lot that's from the male point of view, and that even comes in the form of you know something that's supposed to be a female oriented seat. For a long time. Something you know, sure, like game of Thrones was definitely mostly made by men like almost entirely made by men and even the shows the scenes that were supposed to be sensual were this very male idea of what sensuality is versus if you will get something like Outlander. That's a you know, directed towards an audience that is mostly women, even though The person who makes Outlander. Ronald D. Moore is a man. He very consciously wanted to make sure that in the scenes where you see the leads being intimate with one another, they were realistic, but also cater to the woman's point of view. Because this is a story that's written by one woman about a woman in Bridger 10. It's very much the surroundings that air sensual. It's the context and not the act itself. And so there isn't much in the way of foreplay and the fact that you have this Syriza's that is based on romance novels, which is, you know, a very sensual, real literary form. And the stocks is basically wham bam! Thank you, ma'am, and the woman's like this was delicious and just watching. It was like, Wow, that just looks uncomfortable and painful, and the most central part was everything going around them and around, including, like the candlelight. The You know, the beautiful silks and the roses and the violence behind them. And then, like Wham, bam! Thank you, ma'am. It's like, Well, wait a minute..

"The crown has landed on my head that way, not a killer. This is the way Yeah, to leave. The killer wasn't offered before me. If you're trying to curse you can't pull shirt. We have so many disasters bombarding us right now. Today, We're gonna talk about Bridge or Tim, one of the hottest shows on Netflix. Right now hot in various ways. We'll talk about that. In less than a month, more than 60 million homes streamed it. Naturally, a second season is already in the works. It is a Shonda Rhimes production. Richardson is set in London during the early 18 hundreds, and it follows the Bridget in family during the social season in which well to do young ladies are presented from marriage. Today is a most important day. And for some, a terrifying one. But today's the day London's marriage minded Mrs are presented to Her Majesty. The Queen. May God have mercy on their souls. Well, we've seen this type of drama in countless Jane Austen remakes. But this show is different in some key ways, namely, it is multiracial. Joining us to talk about Bridget Tin is Melanie McFarland, TV critic for Salon. Hi. Hi. Thanks for having me great to have you. Well, this really is the talk of well the talk of a lot talk of social media. And how did it become such a viral sensation? Well, I think there was already a lot of high expectation around the show for two reasons. One. It's one of very few of any adaptations of what is very much you know. It's a romantic novel. I mean, it's It's part of like the romance novel is just kind of generally looked down upon in literature. There are various reasons for that, and it's not right. But unfortunately, it's kind of a fact. So the fact that this is a serious that is being adapted. I think that already brought a lot of heat with it. And the second thing is Shonda Rhimes got a huge deal that killed her away from ABC and landed her Netflix and this is her first release with Netflix. And so I think a lot of people were curious. You see what that would look like, and it's very steamy. As a Shonda Rhimes production is it's d me? Yes, but I think one thing that Shonda Rhimes does really well in her Syriza is to show the world as she would like to see it, you know, And as she does see it in all of her production, she does have an element of inclusive casting now. With Bridger 10. The way that it's executed is in my opinion, not the best on we can talk about that a little bit more. But she also has its very fantastical way of looking at love, You know, even in Gray's, You know, all of the relationships are in some ways, you know, Even the breakups are, you know, hyper dramatic and kind of hyper fantastic. And here you have this very polite society. You know, with this, you know, all of the glamour of, you know, Regency all around it. To have Shonda Rhimes presented Ryan's production of Granted. It wasn't created by her. It was created by Chris Van Dusen, but to have her name attached to something like that. I think that there was a lot of expectation and for a lot of people, it exceeded those expectations of what a Shonda Rhimes Netflix production could look like. So you notice it from the get go. The first episode you see that The Queen herself is black Queen Charlotte and then later on the main romantic interest, the Duke Duke of Hastings. He is black and Quite fetching if I may say, and but that's not commented on until a while into the series, the multiracial nature of this and I just want to play a clip of a conversation between the Duke and the woman who raised him. About that, because this I think this is the first time that they talk about it. We would to separate societies divided by color until the king fell in love with one of us. I love your grace conquers.

"Down. You do not know me, but I know you. This is what they have been trained for since birth. Which young ladies might succeed at securing a match. We've always amused me, Miss Bridget. Ever since I was a schoolboy, and you were but five. From the ornate costumes to the enormous cast the plummy accents and lush locations. Britain is good fun, which is the result of a lot of hard work. BAFTA nominated veteran director Julie Ann Robinson directed the pilot and executive produced the first episode of Britain as well as directing subsequent episodes. And she joins me now from Los Angeles. Julie Thanks for being with us. Hi. You're welcome. It's good to talk to you. Since you were the part of the show from the beginning. I love to start talking about casting. Did you always know Julie Andrews would be the voice of Lady whistle down? Yes, that was decided before I became attached to the show. It was very exciting, Of course, a zoo child I remember watching the sound of music and just idolizing her. So that was wonderful. The lead. The much sought after but troubled Duke of Hastings was always attached to this project. The actor had worked with Shonda Rhimes before and of course, Shonda Rhimes is corruption company in a production deal overseas, the show How did you all go about finding his match? The actress who plays Daphne? Well, that took a very long time. Um, it was a kind of a scholar to horror situation. We saw many, many people on I came across Phoebe on D just was captivated by her. On I She just has such a modern sensibility. Um, so she was somebody that I loved draw her attention, draw attention to her to everybody else involved, and then It went from there. Really? We had a chemistry read with reggae and then That was how Phoebe happened. She was she's so captivating as an actress. You are a veteran director of people have seen your work orders New black Brooklyn, 99 parks and rec. This is a huge undertaking. I mean, there's these enormous formal balls to recreate these manor homes, costumes, horse rides, duels. For you is someone who's been doing this a really long time. What was the most challenging thing to shoot? The bull room sequences were without doubt the most challenging thing to shoot. They were hundreds of people to choreograph and coordinate. And if you think about it, the scenes are incredibly complicated because You have to know exactly what point of the dance. The dances are going to be when the conversation we're having, because it's happening in the background. So luckily, I have got theater background, so I I drew upon that to rehearse with the actors. We were has thoroughly we weigh curry grafted with the director of photography. And, um, off we went. We were able to hit the ground running when we arrived, because obviously there's never enough time. What about locations where Was it filmed? I know it's obviously film in several different locations. And how did you decide to find how did you find the bridge Return home, for example? Well, the bridge it in home. It's It's so funny. I used to live in a place called Black. He's in London and I would walk past the bridge it in home every day on. So when I arrived when I arrived in London, I just immediately thought off that house. I didn't originally think of the British and home for the bridge turns. I thought of it for the Fed ringtones. And that was actually Chris Medusa and Betsy Beers. Who's a fantastic Producer. She she's the land of Shondaland. She holds herself. They decided to make the switch, and they thought it was a more embracing embracing home than the one that was originally chosen for the For the Fed ringtones. And Chris Van Dusen is the show runner and a protege of Shonda Rhimes. What did you think when this project came about this idea of taking this Rome essentially romance novel and creating television out of it? You know, I can't quite late to the show I the project had been in development to might heard about it on guy was fascinated. Um, I I mean, I'm a huge fan of those romance novels. I Woz. When I was younger, I would read them and think I'm I think that at this moment in time, it's It's exactly. It's just what the doctor ordered. We weren't to know that when we were shooting, of course we were shooting it before the time of Covic. Um But it's uh I I think that it was I always knew was gonna be a tonal question Mark around. It was gonna be difficult to just maintain the toners as a director. Was wanting to, you know, Thread the needle between Shondaland between romance novel between U. K Company between All of these all of these A lot of these issues, and that was always the thing that guided me with questions off. Is this Is this coherent? Is it cohesive? My guess is Director Julie Ann Robinson. We're talking about Bridger iton talking about tone. There's a great deal of humor and shakiness in the show on, I'm thinking six specifically what exactly I want to give first is about the music for using these very, very popular songs performed by Ah String quartet. So you have these fancy balls. He's highly choreographed dances, these beautiful dresses. And then you see yourself. Is that Ariana Grande I I'm going to, um this is the This is the one that caught my ear first, Billy, I'll ish.

It's no men are always I'm still a woman when they believe another dude here, Duke to be understood as well. You presume they do wish I presume? Shielding must be precisely what we are me. Unavailable. You Desirable If you know anything about romance novels, you know this agreement won't exactly work. The way they plant Netflix is Bridget in was adapted from a serious of novels. The TV serials was created by rhymes his protege, executive producer Chris Van Dusen. Still, this show features lots of theme's familiar to Rheims fans, a character struggling with a monstrous father who creates huge daddy issues stories showing female independence as the antidote to destructive male arrogance and diversity and casting, which is both admirable and a little confusing. The Duke and his relatives are light skinned black people, as is the queen. The Bridget and family is white. But the subject of race doesn't really emerge until the middle of the Syriza episodes where the diversity is explained. In a way that feels a little tacked on It's odd to see characters of color in a series where their race is rarely remarked upon and the historic oppressions of the time period don't seem to exist. It could make the characters feel a bit Inauthentic too similar to the white characters except for skin tone. Still Bridget and allows characters of color to participate in a lavish, escapist historical fantasy of the sort previously limited to white characters and Jane Austen adaptations..
