"So my observer watched my thoughts and chose one. Does that make sense. Does you want to hear ron swanson. Talk about ron watson parks and rec all told we were in there about six hours and no i was not meditating. I just stood their quietly breathing. There were no thoughts in my head whatsoever. My mind was blank. I don't know what the hell these other crackpots are doing run. And that's when. Ron actually tells chris traeger because chris is being fulfilled by his meditation practice and tells him to quit trying then all of a sudden which is in itself in. That's the thing is like. Ron is sitting there. Saying which is the whole essence of ron on the show like he's the heart of the show. Here let's hear you radiated. Mindfulness there wasn't thinking at all incredible. It takes tons of work for me to get that kind of clear head space no matter how hard to try. Don't try so hard. Don't try so hard. Ron i'm gonna try. You're trying method right here right now chris wage. So there's this thing that happens in parks and rec toward the end. Where the the town that they're in piney merges with this other town called eagleton and basically. There's this episode called dapo gainers where the people who have the parks and recreation jobs in eagleton meet the people who have the parks and rec jobs in pony and they realized that like the overlapping similarities or complete differences. But it's supposed to be. It's kind of a funny play on. How like similar these kind of jobs are and ron swanson's d'appel ganger is actually sam elliott. And he's like a very first. They think they're really similar. They're both named ron. And they both like have mustaches. And they're both like super chill. But then the ron from eagleton though sam elliott character. He's super super chill. He's like a yoga guy. He's goes barefoot. He talks about spirit. And all of a sudden ron swanson's like so turned off by him but the truth is they're very similar and that's kind of why it's so funny but they just speak of life differently you know one talks about energy and love and ron is more like just show up and do life. But they're both they're parallel to each other. They're not as they're not as different as we want. As as maybe they present themselves as exactly like there are people who just do and understand and go through an accept and they don't need to think deep about it. That's ron swanson. And then there's the other. Ron the san malia ron who's like one with the birds and one you know there's there's so many there's actually two episodes with him. I think there's only two but you like we're he understands doina here. Do you have a clip. Okay ron ron.

"John dollars of Brian Hayward from Amalie Arena in Tampa. Game four of the Central Division first round series between the Florida Panthers in Tampa Bay Lightning, the Lightning leading 4 to 1. They lead the Syriza two games to one, and they have stormed the castle to begin this second period. They have come out and already for eight shots on goal after getting only five in the opening period. Meantime, they've only surrendered a couple and they added a power play goal and now have their biggest lead of the hockey game. 4 to 1. No, it really has felt like Don. Everything they've shot has gone on the net. All their good chances have been converted. Meantime, Andre that Celeski continues to hold the fort You mentioned at the end of the first period when it was 3 to 1. This game was a long ways from over. It still feels that way. But the Lightning seemed to have button a few things up, at least here in the second period. That would agree I would agree there. They're not turning as many pucks over as they were in the opening period. Panthers working into the Tampa Bay's own Mackenzie. Weaker fails to connect with Mason Marchment and COO trough trying to force the issue the other way, stepped into by Anton Strong and Strawman. In a few years here with the Lightning. Seems to have a pretty good handle on future off. He has been able to angle him off bucks on a couple of occasions as fuck is lifted all the way back, Ambassador. Let's be forced to cover it up. Get an offensive zone face off for the Florida Panthers 18 that's certainly possesses the ability to come from behind the lead the National Hockey League with 20 comeback wins during the regular season, they came from behind. In the third period to force overtime and win Game three. This is a team that was fifth in goals per game in the regular season. Brian They have the firepower to come from behind. They certainly do and they get an offensive zone face off here in the Lightning aren't allowed to change because that book was dumped in Outside center Red Line. Vasilevskiy held it for a whistle, and that's why the Lightning weren't allowed to change personnel. However, they bring it right back and call Lauren set up by stamp post scores from the slot, his second of the game. In retrospect, perhaps the Panthers would have liked to change. Change goaltenders right now. I think Chris Traeger is coming in for short game, Bobrovsky. Have a bronze. Steve got a little piece of the block around the corner bid. Tampa Bay won the draw just cleared the zone and then stamp coast got to the park, first in the Florida and and caloric completely uncovered between the circles. And for the second straight game, Joel Quenneville will make a goaltending change. It comes here at 7 15 of the second period. It's a tough afternoon for Sergei Bobrovsky again. It's not like they were bad goals. But he just didn't make big stops. He hadn't make breakaway saves and defend against two on ones and cross ice passes. And today he couldn't get it done. And so Chris drinker takes over goaltending change work for the Panthers last game against the Lightning seemed to reenergize them. We'll see if it has the same effect here this afternoon. Trigger was chased after playing the first two periods of Game three made 17 saves on 22 shots on goal. As the puck is muscled into the floor of his own players. Not all that concerned with the pockets. They're cross, checking one another, falling on top of each other and finally comes out of the fray on a Florida stick. Radko Buddhists wires it in wide of Asa Levski. And it's so really comes up with it on the right boards for Tampa and carries back to center will roll it in and that will allow the lightening to make changes. Gouda stretches it up the right side for the Panthers just redirected in his heart. Just got a little piece of it. Luke Schenn spinning in the near corner now voice it back to center. Ice Words CLUB down by Blake Holman. He moves it into the Florida zone and Pat Maroon battling in the corner there with Buddhist to try to get it loose, kept the line and rocketed right on that by circuit tip a good save by drinker but pops straight in here, and he didn't appear to know where it was for a moment. Fortunate for him. The Panthers cover up Now I'm on tour comes right down the slot. Hands it off in a point blank save by Vasyl Levski. We're gonna finally having a room wiped out but Toronto in the corner. It was the Toronto Who took the shot and he's down and everybody trying to get a piece of Pat Maroon right now is the linesman trying tow separate everyone because the Toronto is still prone on the ice underneath the fracas that's going on above it. Look, Shannon is over in the corner right now, and do player and maroon have squared off. They separate now is Shen as a hold of Identified Panther. I can't tell who he's got that Brandon Month tour that he's Meantime, but Toronto has made his way up. He's on his knees in the corner. It's a least a two minute minor penalty for boarding against Pat Maroon. We'll see if the referee decides to give Maura than that. Pronto now slowly skates back to the Florida bench of his own volition while it Shari and Shannon. Continue to discuss things in the corner. Maroon is going to get the gate for sure. We'll see if anything more comes to this. 51 Tampa Bay with 11 37 to go in the second number 14 minutes morning, So it's a two minute garden variety boarding minor on cat maroon. 10th year man who's now with his fifth different NHL team. And the Panthers will get a much needed power play opportunity there one for one in this hockey game. And four for nine overall in the series, so the power play of the Panthers has Almost been at the same level of is that of the lightning? They desperately need one here. Shan hearing it from the Florida bench. Is he Eventually makes his way to the Tampa Bay bench. Right now, officials trying to determine where this park is going to be dropped, and because the Panthers encroached in other words, after the whistle had blown, their players came down below the top of the circles to get involved in those crumbs. I think they're going to face this park off outside of Tampa Blue lines, so that's a little bit of a break for the lightning. Joel Quenneville puts Patrick corn Qu'est out along with his captain Alexander Bark off. Harder over Haiti. Sam Bennett. Also joined the power play unit. And it's gonna be Jonathan Huberdeau again is he goes with five forwards out there, and why not? It's working cancers have converted on their last three power plays in this serious Hit on Bennett is he brings it in on the right forwards. It was McDonald delivered that the Panthers still control the puck around the boards. And Albert Hey, he's gonna be called for interference as he just runs right into Anthony surreally, so the much needed Lord of Power play is over just 13 seconds after it began. It has been a tough game for Carter over Hey, G minus three and that opening period and that is not a good penalty for him to take. Garrett Rank gives us the call For the second time in this game. "You probably know someone like this in your life. The person who gets a ton of things done eats healthy food and stays in shape. People like Chris Traeger from the TV, Syriza's parks and recreation. Sorry, Leslie. Damn have to go run. 10, Miles. I have run 10 Miles a day every day for 18 years. That's 65,000 Miles, a third of the way to the moon. Go is to render the moon picture a guy who strips off his work clothes to revere a running outfit underneath. Now, Chris Traeger is a fictional character exaggerated for comedic effect. But we will know someone like this a friend or colleague or spouse who consistently performs the tasks that seems so hard to the rest of us. How did they do it? What do they have that the rest of us lack According to Wendy Word, a professor of psychology and business at the University of Southern California characters like Chris Traeger are not magical Unicorns. They just have a secret. They are expert at building good habits. In her book, Good Habits, bad habits, the science of making positive changes that stick when the argues that we could all become experts at building good habits and dismantling bad ones. If we only stop to understand the psychology behind our routines. Wendy. Welcome to hidden brain. Oh, I'm thrilled to be here. I want to start with something that you want. So on Facebook, your cousin went on Facebook and announced that she was going to change her life by by which you, man, she wanted to lose some weight. Why did she announced this on Facebook? And what was the reaction She garnered from her friends. Um so I think by making a public statement she was trying to commit herself toothy initial idea her initial desire to lose weight it in a way she sort of upped the stakes because she made it public. And then she was accountable to all of her Facebook friends. And they were highly supportive. They spurred her on told her how strong she was, Um so she got a lot of positive reinforcement for that, Hmm. And the feedback from her friends this idea that in the end idea of encouraging her telling her just do it. You know, that reminds me for video made by the actor Shyla above Hey, stands in front of a green screen. And he says, Well, actually, let me just play for you. What he says, Take a listen. Yesterday. You said tomorrow so just do it. Make your dreams come true justice to it this message Randy is so pervasive when it comes to making changes in our lives the idea that if you want to make a change, all you have to do is just say, just do it. Wouldn't that be wonderful? Um, I don't think that's most of our experience. But what we do believe is if we wanted to enough, we exert enough willpower and we'd make it happen. And the result, though, is that it doesn't often because willpower is not actually we have found the best way to achieve our goals and to change our behavior. Talk about this idea, Wendy. That's significant numbers of Americans believe that the way to change their behavior is through self control. That will power is the key to either making changes that steak or to making changes that failed to stick. Yeah, it's something that pervades our culture when surveys air done of Americans and their beliefs about how to change behavior. Particular something like obesity. Three quarters of Americans think that it's a problem with self control and willpower that we just don't have enough and if we had more, we don't be thinner. Now, researchers have actually looked at this question and asked how much willpower is central. You cite the work of the late great psychologist Daniel Wagner, who once ran a study where he told people not to think about a white bear. Why did he do that? And what did he find? He did it to show that, um, if you try not to think about something, even something as trivial as a white bear that you wouldn't normally think about then later. When you're given an opportunity to think about it again. You just can't stop. It's white bear White bear weight pair. Um, so if this tells us something about what it's like Try to repress or control our desires. Yes, we can do it in the short run, but ultimately it backfires. Those ideas get ah, life of their own, and they start to obsess us. And when you think about the behaviors, we often want to change in our lives, quitting, smoking or eating healthier or exercising more regularly. The challenge, of course, is not to make a one time change not to exercise. Well, just today. The challenge, of course, is to make a long term change and and the research would then suggest that will power might not be the most effective way to go about. Achieving that? Yes, that's actually how I got into this whole research area. I was interested in understanding what it is that helps people persist. So how two people persist it say eating healthfully or saving more money or getting more sleep. We can all do this one time or two times. But it's a very different thing to do it on a consistent basis. When I first started this research, the idea was that we did these things when we were sufficiently committed when we had enough self control to follow through. Then we we'd formed these strong intentions and we'd act on them over time, But I'd noticed that it didn't really play out that way in my life..

It's so nice because you can have it on the stove top cooking something in it and then move it to the event and I have like a really pretty like green one and they have like lavender and blue and actually my friend Tasha has one of these two and she can also about how good it is. It's way cheaper than getting the Lakers or something like that. Like the equivalent will cost pilot four hundred dollars so check out. I hope you guys have the happiest holiday season. "It's kind of cute right. Hello and welcome back to kind of cute and if you're new here. Welcome my name's Bailey. Evan and on I'm Kinda cute. We discuss articles from the cut and my general pop culture. Musings it's Christmas week guys. It's December twenty third win. I'm recording this and we'll be posting it so I think Hannukah just started. Lastly so happy Hannukah. It's all you who celebrate happy upcoming Christmas. I love Christmas Christmas time. I literally about to go home to my parents house and I just love being in my cozy little house with all the lights up and the decorations and I'm so sad to leave it even so my parents house also very cozy decorated. But I just wish that we had an excuse to have a Christmas tree up all year round like when it'd be fun at each month a different theme I'm treating. Can we start that. Make it a thing. Just make life a little more fun. Why does fun hats be relegated to Christmas and can I just point out something? The thing that really grinds my gears when people celebrate. Celebrate a dry January. It's like okay. January's already depressing enough. And then you gotta go and not drink not have fun during it I feel like I purposely have to plan things that are fun during January just to get through the month And I think this also stems from the fact that my birthday is December twenty eighth. I'm turning thirty one and a few days and it's always made me sad it. It's a it's it's a blessing in disguise or bittersweet. I don't know because it's like I get to spend it with my family a lot because people have off school and that part of it's great and I really appreciate. I usually have flexibility with work and like no one's really working during that time but also sucks because all of your friends are with their families and like doing their own thing and I always feel guilty. Making people celebrate with me because I feel like everyone. Everyone has celebration fatigue. I Dunno can relate to that. I didn't mean to get on a celebration rent but I just had to get that off my chest. We have some updates. Let's talk about cash. -Ly Care de Levin and Ashley Benson so Keira on her instagram wait. Let's backtrack a second and our last asked episode. We were talking about the suspicious tweets that came from Caridad Levine's account saying that her and Ashley a broken up and then it seemed like maybe it was that she got hacked but it was unclear. I felt like it was a cover up. But this has me rethinking things. It's a little over the top and I think it is overcompensating to prove a point but let's read it aloud. Allow shall we care de Levin wishing actually Benson Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday at Ashley Benson. There's so much I could say but something I love and cherish most about us is that I don't need to because you know and that's all that matters it's you and me. which is my favorite my safe place? You let me be silly. You let me be wild. L. Do keep me free secure and curious. I feel like I've known you my entire life and I'm so proud of watching you grow into the woman that you always dreamt of being. I love you beyond words. My sprinkles sprinkles tunechi angel face grumpy sweet cheeks never boring but much Benson. Okay so this is renewing my faith in our fall. Twenty twenty wedding guys like I'm still we're still holding out hope. Another update is that it seems that official that Lana Donna and Mr Popo sticks are in fact dating. There's been multiple. I think she posted one on her instagram of the two of them together. It was on his instagram but they seem pretty open about it now. I like the fact that one of them actually posted on their instagram them. Together at the holidays seems to be pretty telling to me so yeah I don't know I still am. I'm very skeptical of that relationship but whatever we were watching the at Casey. Musk grave special. The other day. It's actually kind of cute like Casey. I don't thinks she has the best acting skills but it was cute. It's on Amazon prime. She does a song with troy she does well with James Corden Fred armistice and an Lana del Rey and they sounded great together. Lana del Rey. Casey just needs to like have the Christmas album. Because it's great And the reason I bring this up is because years ago oh I reached out to the producer of the person who produced the Casey must crave show and his name is Ben Winston and since then he's done an so many things he has. He actually produced the grammy as I was This year it's like he just keeps popping up in my life and I feel like it's a sign nine an unanswered sign from the universe that I just can't grasp he also Years ago in two thousand fourteen he produced a show of one direction that happened at Universal Studios. WHO's one of the coolest things I've ever been to? It was taped for television like NBC or something and it was after that that I sent him this email that I thought was relevant to include in this podcast because it goes to show. Hi said last week that I would never send inoffensive. DM To someone. I'm always trying to gas people up and back. Then it was The year I graduated law school and I was so desperate to not be a lawyer that I sent this email and i. I literally thought my deranged however old I was at the time twenty six six year old. Mind that this was going to work for me and I said Hello Mr Watson. I hope this email finds its way to you. I'm sending you the attached images to show a two thousand and twelve conversation between my best friend falloon and myself please excuse the tremendous typos are elation over this idea. New Bounds or grammar. The idea is very similar to yours. Yours and night changes which by the way was beautifully executed. I'll be at the girls in the video. Could've used a manny petty but I understand you were trying to make them as nondescript as possible Ospel so any an all girls cookeville there for proverbial hand slash feet Bravo at worst. I hope this exchange gives you a chuckle that your idea was very in line. The fan girls wanted over two years ago at best. I hope you feel free to contact. Elena falloon me in the future for music video ideas. Earn case you need some nondescript hands or extras and your future videos we'd be more than willing to lend their talents gratis gratis. I can never say that guys. ps I was lucky enough to attend. You're filming of One d the The TV special in Orlando Florida and cannot wait to watch the finished product warmly and I literally signed it Bailey. Four attorney at law and by my phone number lines you at this point in time I did not have a job I had passed. The Bar didn't have a job though and I ended it with this. Yes I am twenty five years old and an an attorney and have no shame for my lundy edgier work. I'm actually watching in the hands of the gods is I type this and so to give you some background at night. Changes changes was one of wonder actions. music videos and Elena and I had emailed each other and again alina is is the creative genius behind everything. It's not me. It's her and she wrote. And this is in two thousand twelve okay. This is two years before this video came out. And she says all the boys are taking separate girls. On stereotypical dream dates like ones on a hot air balloon. Romantic dinner. I'm chopping. This up. Hers was very much more in depth thin explaining it and then she said You know mixed in with performance are and then I said Y'all like them singing in a theme park mark but cooler one then coney island and this is literally like what this music video ended up being. So I don't really know the appointed including this. I just thought it was a fun Ted bit you might not. I don't know I'm just trying to manifest things at twenty twenty guys wanting to live my hop culture dreams dreams. Okay so I thought maybe bringing up something for two thousand fourteen would help bring it all full circle that let's get into our first article of the day and it is what does rob lowe know about Christmas. Business trees that we don't buy Madeline Agar and he said I have a phobia about the pine needles. They all brittle and fall and then they're just going to be flammable and so driven by fear low becomes a man possessed not only by the tree itself but by his formula for keeping the tree hydrated. It's half seven up half water. I I am obsessed with this. This is all I care about during the holidays. Why does this literally sound like his character from parks and REC like his character parks and trek would not touch seven up but I can totally see him? Being obsessive about watering his tree with a seven up water concoction in. Can anyone vouched as to whether or not not this works. Because I've never heard of this and it kind of makes sense like the idea of sugar water basically like using that in a tree. Because I know it's like if you put like vodka in When you have a flower it can help preserve them so? I wonder if it's sort of that same thing like it's helping to preserve the tree and give it a little bit of sugar as like extra the new treatments. I don't know please. Someone told me if you've done this next step we've got another feud involving feud Queen Herself Martha Stewart. If you recall we discussed her ongoing kind of shady feud with Goop Queen. Gwyneth paltrow her self. And I don't know if I mentioned this before guys. I apologize if I did but a goop stores opening Palm Beach and I like want to go so badly and give my review of it. I'm sure I'M GONNA WANNA buy everything because of course course but yeah I just had thrown at him okay so this articles called. Please don't forget to Tag Martha Stewart on Instagram by Hannah gold. So this is about a feud between Martha Stewart and Antony so Martha Stewart left a comment on from her account. I think our personal account below of an image of Antony petting her horses and she wrote guys get ready. Strap in the so freaking good you did not tag me on this photo of my stable nor the photo of my beautiful dogs hod clean Bete Noire and crib really. We are bummed about that because you have so so many followers in new eight says you are my Christmas cookies but I think she meant to say you ate my Christmas cookies which is followed by four exclamation mation Myers. Then it says you were dice not to post the forbidden scenes and we thank you three exclamation marks guys. What the Hell Hell are these? Forbidden Scenes talking about does wiping start. How a sex dungeon like what is going on is it just? I'm thinking maybe it's like upcoming products that she just has like scattered around her house. That aren't out yet so she doesn't want to expose them but like I need to know someone needs to do investigative journalism and tell me what these forbidden scenes are. You're so then. Intensity and like a seeming clapback hosted a photo of him m-league warming his his hands in front of a fire pit and it said patiently keeping my hands warm by her firepit until at Martha Stewart Forty eight follows me back to which Martha replied. I think we started. A social media feud which was not the point. I just wanted to acknowledge my fire. My animals and my food which you seem to love question Mark Question Mark Question Mark is this all a publicity stunt. Could someone unpack this for me. Like how a snoop dogg friends with her. She's this fricken uptight like she needs to smoke a dube and chill on Antony all right last article of the day. We've you got breakfast with a side of manages sinto and it's the articles called. I found the good place by sin. Jesus and Kurtz one of our favorites here and you. I was looking at her instagram yesterday. Is She just graduated college in two thousand seventeen which is just making me feel like a complete life failure. 'cause good for her love her writing keep it up Sanjay Gupta. So she writes. I was hoping that manages Cinta would be a Hembo. I sous soothe myself with this thought. Maybe he'd be just a slight. Jason Mendoza the handsome airhead. He's played to such great effect on the good place for four years. Or maybe considering his face he at least be vain that way I might dislike him enough to interview interview him in peace without succumbing to the kind of nerves that came when you're at a tiny table across from someone who looks like manages Santo but in person over breakfast at the Lot New York Palace hotel tell just cintos seems more.

"And they went he's not even really in the scene in he's acting. That's team player. That's great. That's the season finale. Freddy spaghetti episode. Okay. So literally as my second episode. Yeah. We're going to go back to what you said about Michael shore drawing from the characteristics of the people that he's working with something that we've talked about a lot as a tool that Aaron employs as well. Yes. So you have these two characters Chris traeger and Sam seaborn both of whom have been deliberately imbued with some inherent qualities that you have and characteristics been written in in Europe perspective. How are these two guys similar, and how are they different? They are both inherently up to mystic, they're both inherently energetic. They both legitimately like people. They have sort of unfailingly sunny dispositions and both of them have sort of an idealized version of what sort of wrong, and what's right? Is it fair to imagine that those are also qualities shared by you in the both nerds, bad dancer. So let's start with nerds and bad dancer. Yes. And yes. Yeah. I mean, it is one of those things that I never really occurred to me until two really smart guys wrote these similar traits into two very different characters that maybe it's more about me. And like, I said sometimes it's mortifying. And sometimes it's highly coupled. Yeah, Josh Sawyer said about the two characters his character on sports named this character on west wing that they are smarter nicer versions of him. Y'all. I liked that. That makes perfect sense. What do you think of the biggest differences between Christopher and then Sam seaborn will Sam one of the things we discovered, and then we wrote to it a couple of times is when Sam through the guy up against a wall and says if you come after Leo, I'm gonna bust you look Panatta coming from Sam, right? It was so sunny, I always thought of Sam as a puppy. Yeah. That was I think was a really compelling turn for him. So he always had that edge underneath them. Yeah. Which was really really fun and made the puppy sweet nerd stuff, not just one dimensional. Yeah. In what I realize about Kris trigger is what's amazing about that? Character in multifaceted is that he doesn't have any facets. Legitimately. I would think about things being well, maybe there's more of this. And there's more of that answer is no it's energy, positively and sunshine, and the only real question is how much can you bring to bear? Yeah. I do love that moment in the west wing. When Toby says anyone at he'd rather have a blood enemy less than Sam. But you have to dig really deep to get to that kind of heat from him. And I thought maybe you just have to dig a lot further to get there with Chris. But you're saying you just keep digging, and you're just gonna keep getting more sunshine with Santa keep digging. You get closer to the darkness with Chris you keep digging. You just keep getting closer to the sunshine. That's great. There's an episode of parks and rec live ammo where Bradley Whitford guest stars. And I had read that this is the episode where Mike really sort of led his west wing fandom loose. Yes. The one thing I remember about that Assode was you'll have to ask Mike about this. He designed the show coming from the office to be sort of very anti lighting. And I remember if one point going would kill you to put a scrim above our heads when it's noon and the sun is directly above a freight. I mean, I know you don't want us to look great. But how about a little help? Yeah. And he was like so that's the running joke. So I believe on this episode because he was letting his west wing fandom, go crazy. We actually lit it like a proper television show. And they put a beautiful shaft of light in Ponti, Indiana on that week son appear to places that had never appeared. And one of them was streaming directly with amber light through Chris triggers office and ice one look at it in new I know where to stand and I did my best Sam seaborn pose in the shaft of light. And you know, we did that thing of somebody coming in and you cut, and it's like the silhouette, you know, back to camera in the shaft of light, which we would have done a hundred times on any west wing episode, right and way, we got to do it. Just once..

"It was great people on it. And it was a comedy which I was looking to do. And so we met in a great great great beating, and that's how I ended up on parks and rec can. I back up for one second. You said that you were looking for a comedy to do next. But can you tell me about that decision? And that feeling that you wanted to do comedy at that moment. I kind of liked to do whatever it is that. I haven't been doing if I've been doing a few seasons on a drama. I'm ready to cleanse the palate with comedy, right? And on the other side of it when I finished parks and rec which I did four seasons of I was very ready to go back and do drama on. It's just a thing of keeping fresh and interesting and doing something different. Yeah. So you had this first meeting with was with Michael shore, and Greg Daniels that meeting the one I really really really remembers the one with Mike and Amy came by. I remember she's very very pregnant at the time, and we'd not met Amy and I had not met. And I think it was. I mean, clearly, it was a meeting of you know, she would come in and go how is this guy? Crazy can I work with him? Yes. The deal. I mean, I can only I can only imagine from their perspective. They have this family that loved each other worked really well together, all the pieces fit. And now all of a sudden, you're bringing in another big piece. I'm sure it was kind of stressful for them. But the deal that we all made collectively was I would do six episodes. And then at the end of the sixth. Episode. We would reconvene and see if we all mutually thought it had been a good fit. Right. Does. Learn Michaels play into any of these conversations at all like you were saying about the meeting Amy stopping by kind of having a gut check. You would both worked with Lorne Michaels. Was there any kind of connective tissue that he provided in any of this? Well, other than the fact that Amy and I fantasized about secretly opening a Twitter accounts from Lorne Michaels and having daily Lorne Michaels quote. Yeah. But there wasn't that same kind of Broadway. Video productions connection with parks and rec has. There was with thirty. No, absolutely not. It was it was frankly, it had the feel of like if Lauren is everyone's dad in the world, which is this was the children's first job away from dad got it. So when you started talking to them, what was their pitch to you about the character that you'd be playing? They. They didn't have one. Okay. Which is really great. And one of the great things about Mike is that he finds people interested in them, and then sort of rights to them as opposed to I'm going to write this great character, and you will play it, you famously did that with sheet. It was the first person involved in parks and rec, and he of tailored elements that he felt she brought to the table. He really did it with Nick Offerman. I mean, you know, Ron Swanson is a cumulation and accumulation of Nick Offerman 's most interesting character traits, right, which is one of the reasons why I two meetings were so pivotal coming up with Chris traeger. He didn't know me from Adam. And it's really both interesting and mortifying to think that Chris triggers a direct result of Mike. Sure. Thanks. That's great. And so when did you learn finally what the character would be like what Christopher would entail. When I read it. Really? Yeah. When I read it there is a learned connection though that I just forgotten in the beginning. And this changed almost immediately the notion was that Ben Wyatt. Adam Scott's character and Mike character were this team. And that we would come into these departments and make them work correctly. In the way that we worked was Chris trigger was this amazingly charming field. Good guy that had the ability to deliver the bad news in a way that made you completely. This is the best possible job for me. I can literally make anything sound positive you house just burned down, and you lost your mind stock market. It's chance to start over fires cleansing and true wealth is measured by the amount of love in your life..

"The this is about these are purporting to be real people were purporting to be documenting their real actions and emotions and stuff. And so the. Reality is like there's going to be chunks of time where we just say like these are just people talking to each other. And that's okay parks and rec did that faithfully until the very end. Like, the almost the entire finale is is like some level. Yeah. So at the end of season two you introduce Ben Wyatt. And Chris traeger, Adam. How do you remember when you first heard about parks and rec where you watching the show before you got on on the show? I was I actually the first time I heard about it was when they announced the Mike in Greg. We're gonna make a new show together. And I think at the time correct me if I'm wrong, Mike, but I think at the time like when it was first announced it was announced as a sort of office spin on that was a an unfortunate. Yeah. Leak of an incorrect piece of information. Yeah. But whatever it was I remember I was in a house. I was on location a freezing part of Connecticut. And I was between seasons of tell me you love me. Right on HBO. And it was before they cancelled it, and we were going to go shoot another season. I think, but I remember seeing this announcement and e mailing one of my reps and saying, hey, can we get me off of this show? And and can I get on this as as a joke because I had been we'd been waiting a year to start shooting the second season of and it was starting to feel like maybe it wasn't going to happen, which it it didn't. So by the time, they were auditioning people for parks, and what ended up being parks and rec I was able to audition for and I went in addition. I remember with recedo and Mike and choked. I I was too nervous. And and it just didn't happen, and I was really bummed out. But then immediately afterwards, my friends, rob Thomas, Dan, rich and John bomb and Paul Rudd who'd created party down as. Me to go and do that. And so so it was like, oh, yeah, I'm free. And so I went in and did that. And then I think because of party down Mike ended up asking me is is that right? It was part of the equation. I was I was a fan of yours before party down. And you like to talk about how you bombed, and then addition, but you really didn't. And I remember talking to Howard Klein from three arts about I remember being like this guy, we're bringing this guy back we've got to bring this guy back, and then we're making changes to the show at the end of season to you. And I had a meeting yet my office. And I was like, listen, we don't know exactly what this is. But we're adding a character who's going to be a love interest for Leslie. Do you want to do it? I think I just said I don't it wasn't like let's have a Koi Hollywood meeting where we like pretend. The there's a lot. I have a lot of options, and you have a lot of options. Yeah. Just kind of like do you want to be on the show? Yeah. I remember that. That and I was so flattered because I was a fan of the show. Once it started airing. I I watched the show, and yeah, you said, and I think I said yes, right there then. Yeah. So it was an uncool a very honest Hollywood meeting, which is the better kind of meeting. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Happened in the room..

"For me dog it's a no for me. Dog last one is with this book, make a good movie. And if so, can you cast a film? I don't think we need to go that far, but I just wanted to know in your head, who do you see playing coach? Pitino because I have a few thoughts. It's very hard. It's very hard to to get. I mean, Pacino twenty zero was perfect, but we're bad. The stereotypical thing is like the Italians like the Niro Pacino. Right? Of course. I mean, that's the that Pacino, but chino seems like the obvious one, not even just because his name sounds familiar which by the way you catch the part delay Pitino's basically hired at Penn State, but then Joe Paterno said, you can't come here because the blind Paterno and your patina. Then they'll think it's too close to close. They're gonna have to call you coach, Rick, but turn Paterno said, I don't wanna get involved with your future scandals that would solely my luggage. Yes, and I have a, I have a sterling reputation around these parts and I can't have. I can't take any risks with us. He's been good guy all along. It's at Dover based on as we keep finding out the more that we do the research we, we realized that we've been sleigh botched by our own perceptions in life. I think Rob Lowe as Rick Pitino doing it and Italian accent is what I want. That's what I want. And I wanted to be like I wanted to be low grade like I wanted to be everyone's like, well, how much was this budget? You know what I mean? Like I wanted it to be the set is falling apart. Rob Lowe's, forgetting his lines. He's falling back into Chris traeger every once in a while like that. That's what I want. So in that case, why don't we do? I got to better than four you mostly because I just watched face off like a week ago. Why not Travolta indoor Nick cave? Nick is what? Oh, nikei just Nick cage John. That's what I won't Nick cage as. Do you ladies. Oh, good. I don't. So again, like the book, I think the book would make a shitty movie, but the story would make a good movie, if that makes sense. Yeah, that that's my, that's my final verdict is like, didn't they make good? Yeah, exactly. There you accept the blue chips. I don't remember Nick Nolte in an Italian restaurant. I can't. I can't stress enough like how do you leave this out of the book? I like you don't want to upset your family, get it, but this is all anyone wants to hear about it just I don't know. I don't know in. So speaking of speaking of the talian restaurant, all this stuff. Do how long do you think Ripa Tino jokes are in play? Because I'll be honest, I'm sort of getting burnt out by sort of like, and I know that I'm the, I use the most. I've, I've made hundred of them sexual jokes and and and fifteen seconds and all that kind of stuff. Do you think this is going to be forever? Do you think like, do you think like ten years from now when I'm writing a column and I need a. Funny line and I'm just like, I leave a blank there and I come back and revisit it. I'm gonna make like Rick Pitino fifteen second joke because it'll still be invoked or do you think there's a shelf life for the stuff?.

With that the term and I love it. Do you think that describes you one billion percent? Yeah. I read a quote from you. You said that there's a bias against good looking people in Hollywood. I agree. Yeah, as a there isn't that I bet you that's dated quote, and I'll bet you it's, it's a little out of context. Let me, here's what it is. There's every there's a bias against everybody. Everybody is a bias, right? So so by default, there's a bias against good looking people in look, look, Cary Grant, never won an Oscar. Paul Newman. That'd be eighty. He one Redford's never one for Acton. So in it's the same thing with comedy. I think there is there's a sort of sense that you can't get up depth than substance and also do you think I feel like that's kind of like getting typecast. Do you think you ever been typecast? I mean, I might have felt that way earlier. I don't now. In fact, that's one of the great joys is I can do play like a maniac on California -cation like Eddie Niro. And then at the same time he playing Chris traeger and the same time be playing JFK and then be playing like drew Peterson. So. We're going to get to that because favorite movie that you've ever done z. did you see? I like it's fun times. It's fun. I wouldn't touch bitch. I love it. No, that's you wanted to talk about that because that's that. That part is offered me ago. How do I read the script and you're like, so so the kid walks in sees me having sex and is no let them watch. So they know why they call me big daddy. I was like, this is insane. I was like, I'm so there for that. My fucking getting me. I'm so doing that way. I'm going to be an a prosthetic nose is yours. You played it. Well, you played it very, I had the best time ever doing it because you captured that like, okay, it's Roblo, but he's kind of creepy here. Abusers and bad guy. Yeah, well known, bad guy, and you captured that, like this guy just makes you uncomfortable being around him. Yeah, thank you. I love. And that's like there's no way anybody asks me to play that part. Earlier in my career and that they would think of me to do. It was was awesome. And I took it not knowing and not having any idea how it would ever do it. I watch tons and tons and tons and tons of tape, and it was always like showing up on like Shepard Smith, loved. I mean he was a matter who loved the camera. Yeah. Any any had a great voice and really weird. I rewrote the script and took all his actually actually did sakes. They were more insane than what they wrote. Yup. And how many takes did you take for the on touchable bitch seen that? That's one we're even I went. Is this too much? Have we gone too was and they're like, no lost enough, just wasn't. I saw it for the first time about five. I just showed who sat down goosebumps. Yeah, that that that door, that Raj door going up and down. Right. That was beautiful cinematography. Yeah, we had. We had the semi Taga for did the the abyss and backdraft am I the first. Person say that was your my favorite really played? Yes. You actually are the bumps. Perfect. And I'm happy about that. I've seriously seen that movie many many. I'm very proud of it. I'm I wish by the way it was it was a huge hit. So it was fun as people have seen it. Yes, people don't. People go Sam seaborn the west wing, they go, whatever they do, Peterson, m, untouchable. Bitch, I love it. I'm a little bit more of a basic bitch. I was a big fan of Chris trigger prank. But I would also I would extend that analogy to the Josh. What's the name of the NASA hottie. I think it might be NASA. Hoti. It's LX. Oh, Alex. I mean, yeah. The attempt to little rom- commodities that part of the story was I felt a little odd. I mean, the romance of space has already been touched on in the series. Yes. And there is a great romance to the idea of space exploration and I'd like revisiting it, but the idea of some sort of tying it to actual romance and like going on a stargazing date if I was a little little cheese Alah. Yeah, give me one second. I mean, I grabbed my guitar for musical aid. Fantastic. CJ Craig visit Washington DC by day. She's the press secretary by night. She's trying to find her and she's got the whole town. Who's that girl. I ready for the twenty seven dresses version of the story. Yeah, there's no question. This episode is kinda going in that direction at times. But I did really love her exchange with Carol. When she tells her about Ben Ben take a message gets any more persistent, they're going to open a case file. Can I just tell them you're not worth it to date. He knows better says a great expression on her face to go. Yeah. Oh, yeah. There are a few moments of really nice writing that I wanted to talk about that was one of them. The other also comes early in the episode when Donna and Josh I appear and Donna's prepping Josh to eat something already hungry or else. Which is great, but then what makes it extra special to me is the way that it plays into the next set of lines. Josh says, why am I even meeting with some gigs from NASA and Donna says? Sure, they're not cakes chosen on all gates. Good. Her delivery is so great. Subtle is low thought there's very good bomb swell to the called open. I thought, oh, there's a new member of the club is a was a good moment. I thought the fact that Leo is talking about a nuclear detonation when he says there's a new member of the club. This is the guy to be the closest thing to a literal bomb swell that we may ever get on the show. I didn't even see it. It's you're exactly right. Yeah, let's go to the beginning of the episode we we start in the situation room. Sure. But we'll actually, we start with the president being woken up by a phone call at three AM and then he's in the situation room basically in his pajamas, and it turns out there's a nuclear detonation that's been detected new debt as the new. Yeah, because I wanted the president go, yeah, I I e that that's what that stood for. Right? Because there's not enough time to use the full words he needed. Right, exactly. Nations. I'm sorry. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought there was a new dentist. Now I see. This is actually this is a pretty serious. The Russians and the Chinese have said like detection capability for an atmospheric new dead nuclear detonations. Are you then have to explain what the then it's a little bit longer than saying nuclear detonation in the first place. Cut to morose. Oh, with the tape recorder. That's all I can think of. See the sit room now. It's been defiled with reality stars, both in the form of the president. I also thought this little joke was pretty funny even though literally no one reacts to it and that sound like Chris traeger to me every time you say I'm gonna do I'm leaning. I wanted to make sure. Because I've been thinking about Sam a lot in this episode which I'll get to later, I miss them, but no one reacts to the president when he says either the Charlie's handing out coffee, misses an open yet. Some of this from the secret service command post up. They wrestled to the ground. That is funny. This is pretty good, but no, no one, no one given, you know, turns to look at him when he says it..

"Dark in it's real accurate depiction of depression you'll his character is wildly depressed and he gets into it's also funny there are moments that are really laugh out loud funny and that's where the chechen mobster comes in and i want people to experience it fresh but hank he is kind of like across between chris traeger and bronson pinchot carrots are from the beverly hills cop movies but a mobster it's he's he's wonderful but yeah i really liked the show here's a question i have have you seen the movie kiss kiss bag i have it's one of my favorite yes did the way he goes from hitmen into acting did a little bit of that reminds you of the movie a little bit there's also a little bit obviously get shorty in there on other things where you sort of see organized crime intersect with showbiz but totally it feels very much like its own thing and hater directed half the episodes a couple of them were directed by hero marai from atlanta you know hime alec berg wrote a lot of them but not all of them so it's very consistent in what is trying to do even though it's morphing from sort of the goofiness of the the no hand character who's basically like a big overgrown hairless puppy you know who just happens to order murders and torture and things to bury coping with depression and coming to grips with the truth of what he does at how much he hates doing it it's i'm very impressed by it really really good and i think some people will be a little surprised seeing this level of drama in seriousness from bill hater who you a lot of people associate just with.
