"Chris performed only about a half dozen surgeries in his first few months, but he told Jerry he was on his way to building an empire. He was looking forward to taking over Dallas or, you know, doing great things. Being really successful. Jerry was also trying to broker Chris personal life. He was forgetful, leaving unkept sharpies lying around that were ruining the furniture at the hotel. And Chris, you know, kept wrecking his vehicles and Jerry was take them and get them, you know, dropped off. To the body shops and Jerry was doing a lot of, you know, cleaning up, you know, Chris messes. And Jerry was trying to keep him straight. And so he wouldn't lose his job. In those early months, though, Dutch's employers seemed pleased to have him on board. In September of 2011, he was quoted in the hospital magazine in an article about migraine pain. There was even talk of putting his face on billboards. For all intents and purposes, doctor duntsch had a gleaming career ahead of him, as a neurosurgeon. Jennifer Miller was coming in town to see Jerry every other weekend, and they were talking on the phone regularly. But on one of the calls, Jerry gave Jennifer some surprising news. It was January. I guess, and Jerry said, hey, I'm Chris is going to do surgery on me and I'm said, what? What for what? And he said, on my neck. Jerry told her that Chris was going to fix an old football injury that had gotten worse after a car accident. I didn't want to toting negative vibes out there about the surgery, but I remember saying, are you sure? And that was my response. Are you sure? He said that he was. I said, okay, well, you know, I don't let me know when it's scheduled and I'll come and help you. Jennifer flew in the night before. Jerry picked her up. When I got in the car from the airport and he was like, hey, you can go to dinner and I said, yeah. And he was like, what do you want? And I was like, I was like, I don't know. He's like, I want to stay. The two went out for dinner. They sat at the bar and watched the university of Memphis basketball team, plays southern Mississippi. It was about 9 p.m. before they made it back to Chris house. Jennifer and Chris stood in the kitchen and talked about Jerry's surgery. Chris said, hey, do you want to see the MRIs? Do you want to see what I'm going to do tomorrow? And I was like, yeah, I do. And so he went and got the MRI films and our memory was holding him up in the kitchen. And to lie. And he was like, you know, here's the bulge, or the herniation, and right here. So I'm going to fix it right there. And it was a cervical cervical disc. "Then he took his two young daughters. Were still alive and put them in the back seat and drove about forty five minutes away to one of the offshore sites of for anadarko. It's not an offshore drilling facility. But it was the the site was kind of way out in the in the country and it was a good think about a forty five fifty minute drive from their house so his two young children were writing in the backseat of his truck for forty five minutes with their feet on the body of their dead mother. I i don't i don't understand. That must have been some Kept asking chris. What's wrong with mommy. Why is she not why she laying down back here. Why she not talking and chris would continuously tell them you know mommy's not feeling well but just the idea of putting his two children in the backseat with the dead body of their mother is pretty uncommon that that is some pretty psychopathic ballsy. Move just what it would take for him to check out and distanced himself. Psychologically enough to be able to do that is is really quite remarkable. Now when they arrived on this this offsite area where you know there was owned again by anadarko. Who was chris's the employer. Chris took a blanket. He brought one of the children's blankets with them and he put it over each one of his child's faces and smothered them to death. He took their own blanket wrapped around their head and smothered each of his two children in turn in the backseat of his truck. Right there with the dead body of his pregnant wife. He buried in a shallow grave at this site. We got out and dug the grave after he killed shannon and his two. Little girls got out grabbed. The shovel started digging very shinhan in a small shallow grave. Right there were. His truck was parked then put his little girls in one of the oil takes the the site kind of had these two big chambers i. I'm not really exactly sure what to call. But their these the lyrical oil tanks will call an anti climbed debut as they were about thirty twenty five thirty feet tall and so he carried each of the bodies of his children. Open the hatch and put them inside. I guess with a big vat of of oil. Close the hatch locked. It got in his truck and drove home on the drive home. He was texting nicole his mistress the entire time. The immediate aftermath missed doctors woman early the next day and failed to return text messages from atkinson. One of her best friend is the woman who actually drove shannon home from that arizona. Training trip atkinson reported shenanigan. The girls missing. She knew in the back of her mind. You know something is not right here and this is something that needs to be investigated. We need to find her because she does not miss doctors woman. She's very fastidious She'd be certainly you know being pregnant. She would not have missed this doctor's appointment that that is a very very unlike her in very very out of character for her so atkinson immediately knew that or just kind of immediately felt in the back of her. Mind that something. Something was not right then when she missed another business meaning a few hours later atkinson became very concerned and went to kristin chenoweth house about twelve pm to check on her. So not only did shanahan. Miss a doctor's appointment that morning but she also missed another business meeting later on that afternoon this again was very very unlike shannon in atkinson knew that something was not definitely something was not right. This is unlike her at all so she called the police in drove immediately to christian and south to see if she could finder in in chicken on her and and make sure that she was okay. She arrived at their house about twelve ten pm that day the next day after they had gotten home from the airport the day after the murders she knocked on the door no one answered when no one answered the door. Atkinson called chris work to tell him something is not right. He needs to come home when she got off the with chris. She called the police. Chris got the phone call from atkinson new that shannon the girls were dead in buried and then came home to meet with the police officer who was already on site. The police elster had gotten there before. Chris had a police officer arrived about one forty. Pm we're gonna place. The police officers police report in the show notes of of this episode. So you'll be able to kind of look through those and see exactly what the police officer roden neil. His interest in any of the charges and things like that that he thought might have happened when the officer arrived on site. Chris was not working. Police officer had arrived on site before. Chris got there. He you know he worked about thirty to forty five minutes away from home the officer knock on the door and looked inside the windows to steve. Anyone that was there so atkinson again is telling her you know shenanigans missing. You know there's something wrong. She missed a doctor's of woman. She mr business meeting etc etcetera etcetera. Something is not right and so the police officer said you know. I can't enter this house without the owner's permission. And so the best he could do was just kind of looking the windows and check to make sure that if there was anything he could see. If if the police officer was able to see you know shinhan lying on the floor or whatever then he would be able to enter as probable cause but because he couldn't zeeshan in she was buried at the oil site he was unable to enter the property and began a search so he had to wait until chris got there to give him permission to enter the house to make sure that she was okay. So the officers. You know out there. He's knocking on the door. He's looking in windows. he's calling out. Janine you know are you here. Is everything okay hoping. Maybe she'll come to the door and you know she bought had been asleep or you know the whatever and everything would be fine atkinson again became more and more concerned as as shannon failed to answer as things began to kind of get heated up and then things began to be. You know a little bit more and more and more out of character lee was. This is very unusual. This was very very out of sorts. Shinhan was not one to just disappear in not return text messages now. Return phone calls in certainly not want to miss. Doctors appointments in business meetings so she became much much more concern that that something was amiss. Something is not right. This is not good when chris finally got there. He gave permission for the police officer to enter the house. And make sure everything was okay. So you know. Chris again knowing what he had done the night before showed up in a police officer is there and he said yes she owned. Knock yourself out. Go in their search around I haven't heard from shannon. I haven't seen her house in the girls. I assume that she took them to school. When when i left for work at five fifteen this morning belying his azoff and just kind of in the back of his mind. He knows what he had done what he did the previous night. And he's continuing to to kind of lie to this police officer light to atkinson and kind of keep this charade going and you know to to have all of these different narratives and you'll having to put one face forward to you. Know law enforcement food you know. Is there to investigate a crime that you know you committed the night before and to not put out that suspicious fiber that you know the the body language he really had to be really hard self-monitoring you know the the thoughts of what was going. What what the police officer might find it. Did i forget something you know. Is there something out of place the something look right as you know in my acting too distant on my acting nods distant enough it. It's all of these things. Were constantly going to chris's mine. And i can't really imagine what that what that our long walk through must have been like for chris. Because i'm i'm not really a very good liar myself in so i can't imagine you know the the not really guilt but the i guess fear of being figured out of being you know bound out into constantly wondering if if he was giving himself away or whatever that that really probably that would have made me crazy and insane. I would not have been able to keep up that rusin that show that chris did during that police walk through. A cursory search of the house turned up shannon's phone and keys and her car with the girl seats building. The back seat was parked inside the garage associates purse. Her phone hint car. Were still there which again raised all kinds of alarm bells for atkinson because again this. Is you know shannon. Apparently never went anywhere without her phone. It was something that she kind of. She was on her phone all the time. She was very active on facebook and social media. And she just. She never went anywhere with her phone. So that that in and of itself Through a another big red flag in atkinson slowly became convinced that something is not right. This is not something bad has happened and in the police officer found her wedding ring. Actually chris founded in walked out into kind of the living room area where they all were as oh. She left her wedding ring here. I was not good. That was a bad sign. And personally i think chris probably planted that wedding ring I i. I think that he used that as he kind of thought that he could use that as an alibi and kind of use the whole we had an argument the night before she got mad and i went to work the next morning. She was still here and she took the kids to school in. I guess she decided that she was done and she wanted to leave me where she is now. I have no idea are obviously. She left her wedding ring here on her phone. And you know she. She wanted to end this marriage. Anion going away again that on thinking that was probably some kind of of deflections or defense mechanism pro possibly even the planting of a feature alibi when he you know he came out with that wedding ring and said you know she left her wedding. We here so that must mean that she left me and she is where she is. You know pretty much anything. Other than i killed her and buried her. So don't look at me. You know she is. You know someone who wasn't happy and she finally had enough and she took off so go find her. This kind of seemed almost like an evidence plant to support his his later story that she had left him. After this big huge fight which again turned out to ultimately be untrue. She was dead and buried in an oil site about forty five minutes away from their home. Chris initially told the police that he had no idea where she girls had gone. And then he hadn't seen her since five fifteen that morning the day before when he left for work he gave several interviews on the front lawn of his house to local network. So we're we're looking for a long interviews here a little bit but Again once once news of of this disappearance in this very upper middle class neighborhood in suburban colorado. These types of things just didn't happen that attracted a lot of media attention. The police officer then went to a neighbor's house. Chris next door neighbor who reported that. He had a video of chris driving his truck out of his driveway and then backing it back into the garage. So chris basically backed his truck out of his driveway turned around and backed his truck into his garage which he apparently never did as the police officer in the next door neighbor. Were kind of watching this video. Chris was standing right there and they were watching this video. This security footage apparently the The next door neighbor had kind of security camera on the side of his house and it had captured all of this at had captured. Chris backing truck out and backing his truck back into into the garage. Chris was appeared very very uncomfortable. He was on a cell phone the entire time and he didn't really pay attention to the video. He didn't help. you know. Find clues or you know look to see if this was something that might have caught someone or something breaking into the house or sneaking in thousand because of course. Chris already knew what was being done at that point. You'll he was backing the truck and so that he could loach annan's dead body into the back seat. We're actually at the floorboard of the backseat. And so again. This raised the pucker factor for chris. Up to eleven Sitting here with this police officer watching the security footage of him doing exactly what he knew he was doing at that moment and the what must have been going through his mind while he was sitting there no wonder he couldn't watch it so he's sitting there looking at his phone playing with this phone bouncing from one leg to the other seemed very very nervous and very very uncomfortable again because he knew exactly what was on this video he didn't want to he didn't wanna watch it again. After watching the security footage with the police officer chris again shakes his neighbors hand in russia's out of his neighbors house so he you know chris watch the videos. The incident was over. He reached out his hand to his neighbor shook his hand and bolted. Chris was gone. The neighbor informed the officer that chris was acting very very strange and weird when they were watching. This video of chris was normally a pretty relaxed guy in pretty. You know outgoing fun loving guy. He didn't normally act like this. You know the the nervousness and not really paying attention. He didn't seem really all that interested in the video. And then maybe seeing. You know anything that might have. That might have been clue or anything that might have tipped off to exactly what had happened because again this is this footage of the night of the argument that the night that that shannon disappeared chris was kind of rocking back and forth from one foot to the other and the the neighbor told the police that this is something that is is very unlike him he never does. He's behaving very very strangely. He's behaving very very out of character. Neighbor also told the officer that you know. He never backs his truck out in puts it in the garage. Uh shannon usually part or car in the garage and chris truck on on the driveway. It was His work brooke and it never really went into the garage because the garage was there. Was there for shannon's car. So the neighbor was immediately suspicious as soon as he saw this and he saw that the police officer was over at christmas house he he went over there and told him you. I've got something you need to see. I have all of this kind of on security video footage. Even the coal chris's mistress began to be suspicious about kris potential involvement in the disappearance. When the news began to break about shannon's in the children's disappearance she said that it really concerned her. The shannon had yet to be found so chris mistress. Who didn't know you know. Obviously chris did not tell her that he had killed his wife. She began to kind of put two and two together and put all these pieces together. That you know chris's wife is now missing. And he's got all this free time he's been a whole lot of time with me. Did he possibly do something to her. So that's kind of win. Win these brought lawn interviews really began to start in. You know if you have any even passing awareness of this case. Then you've probably seen video excerpts of chris standing on his front lawn with a lot of media giving these kind of interviews begging shannon to come home and begging whoever took her to let her go. And you know. I just want you guys to come back on blah blah. So as as he's news crews began to kind of distended on the house. Following the break disappearance had in fact happened. Chris gave a whole lot of these front lawn interviews and they became kind of the entire image of case. You know him standing right there a little walkway to his front door in answering questions and begging and pleading for shannon to come back or in the girls to come back and you know if anyone had taken them or anyone had harm them please you know. Let him know he wants to put all this behind him and he wants to resume his life and he wants to have had his family back. The news crews actually stayed camped outside of his house. Just waiting for any kind of news to break on on this subject. So there were several of these of these front lawn interviews anytime anything. Any news broke about any break. In the case of any information came out they would immediately go up and Try to get chris to come out in and give them an interview and he did. He did this quite quite a number of times when report has him if if he engineered a fight prior to the disappearance chris said quote. It wasn't like an argument. We had an emotional conversation. I'll leave it at that. But i just want them back. I just want them to come back in quote. Now let's these news. Interviews kind of began to get on the air and people began to watch it and take a lot of public interest in this case. A lot of viewers noted his unusually restrained demeanor as he spoke about his missing family seemed distant and emotionless begged for them to return home to him all the while knowing that he had killed them days before and exactly what had happened and where they were so he's kind of leading everyone on this wild goose chase that he he he already knew the answer to and he went along with it for for weeks. Neil begging for shanna come home and wondering where she is and you know all all of these volunteers had had come to help me to walk the streets and walk these fields and try and find her body and all of this money and expense went out to to finding the shenanigan. The girls and chris all the while keeps you know fuelling misfiring in keeping this is interest in the case in saying you i. I still don't know where the art i haven't heard anything from them. And knowing that all of these people were spinning all of this time and money to try to help find someone that he had killed weeks before. And that's that's that's pretty up there man. I can't imagine that this is something that was easy to do the that. That's just it's it's very very remarkable and end almost almost kind of impressive that he was able to to maintain this this amount of emotional distance from this and be able to kind of again played played the part as well as he did he was he was a narcissist. Then and a psychopath. I believe i believe that. A lot of the you know focused a lot of this on himself and what he was going through and never really manned up and admitted what he had done in saved everyone else. All of this struggle corny does psychologist. Dr todd 'grande quote. Chris was displayed characteristics of narcissism and psychopathy from the way he murdered his family and disposed of their bodies in quote paraphrasing the qualities and narcissism and psychopathy. Chris watch showed that he quote lacked empathy only cared about himself and had no conscience in quote. Brandi also pointed out that quote. Chris watson's dark behavior didn't stop there. He continued to texas girlfriend. Unin rolled his daughters from school and looked vacations on google after the murders signaling a lack of remorse and no sense of accountability in quote arrest and charges. Chris was brought in for questioning on aug fifteenth. Two thousand eighteen after failing a lie detector test. He was interviewed by the police in the polygraph technician. They continuously asked him to confess that they knew he was lying. He failed the polygraph. They knew that he was not telling the truth so he kept. You know saying chris. We know you're lying. This is the time to come. Clean is the time to put all of this to rest. Get off your chest. You know you can't keep up the charade. Were not going to listen to you. Tell us you don't know what happened. We know that you. Do you know how police officers do you. This again must have been kind of this ask. Pucker factor of eleven christening here. And he knows that he has lied and he knows that they know that he has lied. And he kind of has his internal dialogue going. We'll do i finally admit it in myself you know. Get this kind of put an end. The or do i continue to spin this tale That i don't know what happened in almost in an effort to convince himself You know he's telling the truth you know if you repeat something enough times you actually begin to believe it so whether or not he you know really knew that the gig was up or whether he wanted to kind of believe. It almost really believe it himself. Chris chris the only one who who knows that chris finally came to the decision that that the gig is up. They know i'm caught. I'm busted when it come clean once. He finally came to this realization. He asked to speak to his father running watts and win. The police granted that request. They His father was sitting outside of the of the questioning room and so they win. Got him in in. Brought him inside and let chris in in his father runny speak alone. Of course the video cameras is still up there recording but They brought him in and gave chris some some alone time with water while i was speaking with us with his father he finally admitted to killing shannon. In the heat of the moment please finally came back in the room. He admitted it to them as well but then he told another lie. He claimed that in response to his request for separation again to be with his mistress nicole. It had been shinhan who is strangled. The girls cross claimed to have witnessed the death of of his children on a baby monitor. He said he saw shannon actively strangling celestin bellas body was motionless sprawled out on her bed and that she had turned blue. Though chris basically told police aunt his father for that matter that in desperation in in anger over is request for a separation shannon marched straight down the hallway to his to the little girls around and killed each of them in turn and chris is sitting there in their room watching.
