"Ian Xander bogarts made it very clear on Tuesday. Speaking in the Clubhouse and yes, clubhouses are back open to the media. Woohoo. He made it very clear speaking to Red Sox media that he really doesn't want any part of playing second base. Or third base for that matter. I mean, tracks, just look at what number does Xander bogarts wear. He's number two. It's Derek Jeter. I mean, obviously this guy patents himself as a shortstop. He's always thought of himself as a shortstop. In 2014, when the Red Sox went out and got Stephen drew back, do you remember he helped him win the World Series? And then I think it was May or June of that season drew was still a free agent and a Ben sharington at the time brought him back and then they moved Xander from short to third and he tracks. He was in a funk. Yes, I remember that. Dropped 20 to 30 points when he got moved off shortstop. They traded Steven drew at the July 31st deadline that year. Xander bocas went back to shortstop and by gosh, he started hitting again. I mean, this guy loves to play shortstop. This guy, I know he doesn't have great range. But as Alex corp pointed out yesterday, the one thing you know with him and the ball gets hit to him, he's going to make the play. And he does like what's underrated most about zander Boggs is this guy's work ethic. I mean, he's 29 years old. I've never seen him come into camp in better shape than he did. Yesterday, his biceps are just bulging. I mean, this guy is a workout fiend, and he was working on his agility. This off season also. So one of the underrated because he's such a laid back mystery, I grew up on the beaches of Aruba. It just has to be, you know, you know the guy. He is an intense worker, so he's going to do everything he can to keep that shortstop position, but it's really interesting because he has an opt out this off season. When he signed that 6 year contract three years ago, you know, it seemed like he was going to be one of those lifetime Red Sox guys. He took a discount deal to stay in Boston, but things have changed tracks. One thing that's changed is the market for shortstops. You look at what Corey Seeger's time for. You look what Francisco Lindor signed for. And you look at what zander Bogart has become since he signed that deal..

"The bulky guy in the middle of the game. Because the opening usually goes one or two innings, but yeah, I mean, whitlock on how gar again going to be huge parts of his pitching staff. And the Red Sox do feel better about the overall depth of their pitching right now than they did last year. And that's why they went out and got walker and they got a hill and they expected both whitlock and how it will take another step forward as young guys who were really thrown into the fire last year so they think that maybe they can withstand the loss of Brazil for a month and I know the starting pitching market is kind of drying up right now. Right. You need bloom find somebody on the trade market or you find somebody who can sign the little bit of a placeholder also. All right, let's talk about Jake diekman and Matt strom, they added a couple of relievers this week and obviously that bolsters a lefty heavy bullpen. What can you tell us about those two guys? Yeah, what the Red Sox really, you know, with this three bad minimum thing tracked, the loogie as they call them. Yes. They've really become outdated. I mean, you're not going to see Tony fawcett anymore. And more current time from our day, I cover in the stocks Mike Myers, you're not going to see guys like those guys like that just aren't useful anymore. As long as the team has pinch hitters that they get hit for those latches on the bench, those guys are going to be used to see what the Red Sox tried to do was go out and get lefties who have pretty identical splits against lefties and righties in their career. So they think that geek but in the end, the other guy strahm who's lesser known mainly because he's had a knee injury that's really kept him from doing anything much the last two years, but they really like him. Strahm's more of a middle guy, like a swingman type of guy who can, like you said, maybe an opener or a guy who can give you two or three innings for geeks, a traditional kind of wanting guy, even got a little taste of closing last year. So, you know, I think those two sides give them a little depth. It does seem like the balance of the bullpen is a little off kilter right now because you have deep end. You have strum. You have Josh Taylor who is excellent. One of the best left on left guys in the Middle East last year. And then you still have awesome Davis and you still have Darwin's and Hernandez. So you got to think they're going to trade one or two of those guys. They're not going to carry 5 left these in their book, but I'm going to start the season. They obviously like these guys. So I think maybe I think Darwin's and Hernandez is a guy who was a big name when he first came up, but just has never lived up to it. So I think that's a guy you could see, you could see him moved before the season starts. Speaking with Ian Brown of MLB dot com doing a wonderful job of covering your hometown Red Sox for MLB and Red Sox dot com..

"Hey everybody, it is tracks once again, Mike petralia back with another installment of Red Sox beat on the seal and S media network. It is my sincere. Pleasure to welcome back the one and only Ian Brown covering the Red Sox for MLB dot com. And I'm glad to see your smiling face and that backdrop, whether or not it's real or computer generated, I don't care. It's a good sign that you're down in Fort Myers. Yeah, I'm not at the ballpark right now, but I have been there for the last several days. So that's a big step from where we were. Last year at this time when we wondered when baseball was going to start. Let's get to the news of the day. Unfortunately, Chris sale was not able to talk to the Red Sox during the lockout, which ended, of course, last Friday. And because of that, he was not able to officially inform him. I found this interesting in your story on MLB dot com. Wasn't able to officially inform him of form the team that he had a stress fracture in his right rib cage until the CBA was ratified and he could officially talk to the team. And that news, of course, broke on Tuesday when heim bloom met with you guys in the media. Yeah, so the lockout ended, it was March 10th, Thursday night basically 6 p.m., the owners ratified the CBA. And then I think it was right around them when the teams were already getting in touch with all your players now. So it's just a free for all. And then so Korra and heim bloom called Chris sale. And Chris still felt really bad because he's like, you know, I had to tell them about this injury, it's probably the last thing they wanted to hear. But so yeah, it's not a good thing. I don't see him pitching for the Red Sox before May 1st. I think May is the best well, possible scenario. This happened about a month ago. It'll be four weeks. On Thursday. And Chris sale set himself like broken bones, take 6 to 8 weeks to heal. That's a universal thing. And we all know that rib injuries can be tricky. So you figure it best case scenario is that sale starts throwing, you know, in two to three weeks, maybe opening day or a little before. And then he gets back at some point in May, but yeah, not a good way for the season to start for the socks. Hi bloom said on Tuesday or Wednesday about what day it is. That's what March Madness will do. And by the way..

"And the way you do that is you take care of business against these two crap teams you're playing and then you just gotta take two or three against the Yankees. But how great is it that there's big time meaningful Red Sox Yankees baseball at the end of the season here? It's awesome. I think scheduled makers did a very good job with that. And the Yankees have been struggling mightily as everybody knows. And as we wrap up here on this week's Red Sox beat, let's again go over the standings. As we are on the off day, here we go. So the Red Sox go into the off day. They are 86 and 65, the Blue Jays have two games in hand on them. They are 84 and 65, so one game, the Red Sox have their one game ahead of the Blue Jays, but the Blue Jays have two games in hand so they could make that up very easily. And the Yankees are 83 and 67. A game and a half behind the Blue Jays and two games, a two and a half games behind the Red Sox. So the Red Sox would really have to fall apart. To fall three games back and miss the playoffs altogether. Could happen. Obviously, they're facing the Yankees and the mets are, you know, the mets would love to stick it to the Red Sox, but like you said, they're a mess and I don't think that's going to happen. Anything else on your mind? Don't sleep on Oakland. You know, they're just kind of lingering there. And they are 82 and 67, they are two games back of Toronto in the wild card and they are three games back of the Red Sox. Yes. And I don't know one 5 straight. Right. I didn't mean don't sleep on them in terms of they could end up taking that top wild card spot. But I would even say the Mariners two, I like what the Mariners have and they play the 8 7 times here. Down the stretch. They have 7 games left against each other. So if one of those teams were to win 6 of those 7, and I don't know how realistic that is, but that one of those teams is going to have a chance to really climb. If they can kind of get on a run, you mentioned the AZ one 5 in a row. So I know everybody wants to talk about the contest brewing in the a at least and they should. It's really fun and it's good baseball and it's a robbery and all of that. But I'm not ready to rule at least when it comes that second wildcard spot. I'm not ready to rule the AO west out of it either. All right, I want to thank everybody for downloading today's podcast. Thank our terrific guests..

"October 10th, back with, okay, I won't call you a fanboy anymore. 29. It's part of my brand. 90 yes, it is. 98 5, the sports hubs, Alex barth. All right. I wanted to talk about Alex, those two games, the final two games and Seattle where I think if the Red Sox make the playoffs and they win that wildcard game. I'm gonna look at those two games and a mental toughness they showed in those two games, winning them at the end of a road trip with the White Sox and Seattle. 6 game stretch. They were one and three to begin that. They finish at three and three. And just the way they finished that makes me think that they do have the mental fortitude to go. At least a little distance in the playoffs this year. Yeah, I mean, we talked about the beginning of the show, right, the damage this team can do late in games and how that's going to be an advantage in the playoffs. And here I go, doing math on the air again. 12 of their 70 yes, 12 of their 17 runs, they scored between those two games, came in the 8th inning or later. They scored one in the 80s and then 5 in the 9th in that first of the two. And then 6 in the tenth. That's why we have you on here, Alex. Thank you. So yes, it's LA came mentality and that was if I have the time I write in my head because again, September 14th might as well have been a month ago, but that was right around when hunter renfrow was on that tear, right? And I think he's somebody that you look at, yeah, yeah, two RBIs in a second game. He's I don't know, not even. They're not competing for the playoffs without him right now. And I know he had a bad error in one of those games. He dropped the ball in the center field, but what he's given them offensively where JD Martinez has really struggled in the second half here. And Xander Bogart's mistime due to COVID and Alex verdugo kind of fallen off and they had to wait to get schwarber going after the deadline, right? They were going to be a bat short. They still might be a bad short, but they were going to be at least one bad short definitively. And Renfro stepped up big and he stepped up big in the biggest moments. And he's a guy, you know, he's he's playing the best baseball of his career..

"In a one game playoff where you need one game to advance to a multiple game series. You need your best picture to soak up three to four innings. I think a one game playoff is like a game 7. You're not asking for the guy to go out and throw, you know, a two hitter complete game. Right. That's not what you're looking for. You're looking for somebody you can rely on in the opening three innings for four innings to get you off to a good start. And if he runs into any trouble whatsoever, especially when you're talking about sale, this coming off the Tommy John, who's looked pretty solid strong coming back from that, but also throw in the fact that he had a mistime due to COVID protocols. There was that to take into consideration as well. So you want your best picture who can handle a big game situation. The other guy obviously that comes to mind in my way of thinking of course is native Aldi. I think either one of those guys who really can't lose starting them in a one game scenario. But then you go to a bullpen that I think is fairly deep and you have some arms that could be transferred into the bullpen from the starting rotation. So I think there are a lot of different ways that Alex core can go. I think Matt Barnes, let's move on to Matt Barnes for a moment. Can I just jump in? Yeah, I think what makes this conversation really interesting and we don't know the full story right now. So, you know, we can't fully get into it, but boy, you know who the ultimate winner go home weapon would be out of the bullpen would be gara whitlock. Yeah. And now she's stole my thunder, but go ahead. Sorry about that. Well, no, I was just gonna say like maybe he'll be back. Maybe he's just a little sore and he'll be back in a week and, you know, it's all well and good, but he, you know, this whole starting from the beginning of the season was like, wow, this guy is gonna be nails in the playoffs. You go back to what Andrew Miller was and what was it that 2016 run.

"Back with Alex bartha, 98 5, the sports club. And I want to go back to Chris sale and knowing that he came off the disabled list on Friday. I thought he was effective enough in the win over the Baltimore Orioles. He improved a four O with a 2.4 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 6 starts. Sale could picture as many as three more times due to the Red Sox having three more off days. As you and I have both mentioned. Yeah, and I think the big thing with him, you know, it's good and bad. Obviously, strikeouts are strikeouts and strikeouts are king for a reason. But I think part of the reason he was so effective against Baltimore, he only had that one strike out, we saw it going back to his rehab starts where the one I think was his first one in Portland. He was at 80 pitchers through I think four innings. And he struck out the majority of the hitters he faced, but strikeouts rack up that pitch count. And at a certain point, as dominant as you are, you're not going to strike every batter out on three pitches. And you need to kind of balance that into a certain extent. Trust your fielders. To just manage your pitch count. Now, I get not wanting to trust this Red Sox defense. I wouldn't trust it. It's definitely not good. No, it looks, might as well put me out there. But anyway, I think sales done a better job of pitching to contact at the right times. And minding his pitch count and doing a better job of getting deeper into games or setting himself up to go deeper into games and that's a big development because with the bullpen still sort of coming back. And we don't entirely know who this team's closer is right now. You know, you like to think Matt Barnes figures it out when the season comes back or that you know Adam ota vino gets on this run and he can continue. But you're going to need especially that one game playoff. You're going to need Chris sale. You need them for more than four or 5 innings which is what he was kind of doing when he first started..

"Out of picture. So now what, you know, you have an interesting conversation here. You mentioned what was it again three off days in what? 14. 7 days. They have three off day as we record this. They have the off day today. They have the off day on Thursday and they have the off day next Monday. So that's three off days and calendar 7 days before they open up with three at Baltimore and three in Washington to conclude the 2021 regulatory season. So this is where things get really interesting because you look at that and let's go back to Chris sale, right? Yep. You have two options on the table here. And I honestly, I'm back and forth on these. I don't know which one's the better route to go. It's a tough decision for Alex Corey here. You can definitely get Chris sale the extra rest, which coming off the Tommy John, you jump at that opportunity. But there's also maybe a chance to squeeze an extra start out of them. If you kind of juggle the rotation, right with that. And I'm not going to try to do all the math right now. I do it in my head. It will take off the rest of the podcast. But the general idea is you can finagle things and probably use a form and rotation here for a little bit and get that extra start out of Chris sale. To me, it comes down to how much do they feel they really need it. They have the one game bump on Toronto right now. Do you feel comfortable with that? So it's going to be interesting to watch how they do that because at the same time you can line up that extra start and you want to line them up for that wild card game. I think at this point, you have to start looking towards that. You just assume you're in that game. Even if you somehow catch Tampa, great. Then you can still start Chris sale game one anyway. You have to try to line him up for that wild card game. And do you do it by kind of wedging an extra start in there or do you just give him the extra rest? Speaking with Alex barth of 98 5, the sports side. We're back and better than ever. All eyes are on the grid. And teams are back to start..

"Everybody, it is tracks and this week on Red Sox beat. I welcome back old friend Alex barth of 98 5 the sports hub in Boston covering all things Boston. Board sports hub, including your hometown 9, the Boston Red Sox who are in the midst of capturing a playoff spot a wildcard spot in the American League. How you doing Alex? I'm good. It's fun, right? This is what we all said at the beginning of the year like, hey, just give us meaningful baseball in September. And I don't remember the last time that the teams that are involved how many teams that are involved how close it is that we got to up close here in Boston see a pennant race like this. Really. And you know what? I break out my handy dandy. Standings. And they tell me that the Red Sox believe it or not, are 6 and a half games behind the Tampa Bay Rays with just over or just about two weeks remaining. Look, I don't think they're going to catch Tampa Bay. They would have to have a Philadelphia Phillies 1964 asking for any of those old folks out there who remember, they would have to have that kind of collapse or the Red Sox to catch them. So I think the Red Sox are really resigned to the fact that they will be playing in a one game playoff. What they want to avoid, of course, are two things. They want to avoid playing in two one game playoffs. And secondly, they want to have that wild card game if they're forced indeed to play in the wildcard game. They want that game at Fenway Park. Yeah, I think that actually makes a huge difference. Just the way this team has played home versus road this year, and I think if you do and we'll see what Chris sales availability is, I know that he's dealing with some COVID issues or was dealing with some COVID issues. You know, if he's available, you want him pitching at Fenway Park. You want that lefty Fenway Park..

Are Red Sox irrelevant in Boston after miserable season

"Baseball playoffs are underway without the last place Red Sox, who lost 18 of their 1st 24 games during a pandemic shortened 60 game season, then never recovered. But Boston President Sam Kennedy said second half the season we started to play 500 baseball. I think we finished five and to to end the season. There were some exciting a new additions to the roster and really has us optimistic for 2021 as we go forward as we Build towards the next great set of Red Sox teams. Big Banks, Airlines, March Retail Report

"It's Wednesday April fifteenth. Welcome to mark. I'm Chris Sale with me today. The one and only Andy Cross could see my friend. Hey Chris how're you doing in there? I got coffee. I'm good good to we got. We got a lot going retail. We've got airlines. We'VE GOT ENTERTAINMENT. But we're GONNA start today with the big banks because it's earning season and the as an industry. The big banks sort of lead the way Goldman Sachs and Bank of America both out with first-quarter reports Goldman Sachs profits down. Forty Nine Percent Bank of America can take some small solace in the fact that their first quarter profits. Were only down forty five. Yeah it's it's the real headline I think from the banks. Chris is just the reserve the loan loss reserves. They're taking now in this quarter so when you look across almost all the banks. That's been the biggest hit to the prophet picture. The revenues were somewhere in the flat. Picture for example Goldman revenues were flat. Gp Morgan's revenues were down like three percent wells. Fargo was down down about eighteen percent so the revenue lines weren't such the concern. It was really much more profit picture as you mentioned. And we're just seeing that show up in the earnings per share of these companies but the biggest part for that or these loan loss reserves that these companies have to the banks have to set aside in the expectation that the economic crisis. The pandemic that we're facing is going to cause some of their clients both on the consumer side and the commercial side to not pay their bills and so they had to set aside reserves for that. So when you just look at like what happened with with Goldman their earnings down forty six percent and they set aside nine hundred thirty seven million dollars this quarter. That's almost as much as they sent. Set aside for all of two thousand nineteen and that's four times the amount that aside in the first quarter of two thousand nineteen and you see the same thing across all of the the big banks. Gps set aside an additional six point. Eight billion dollars. It's four point. Four billion in the consumer side mostly for cardholders and the rest on the on the commercial side and across the entire company. That say this is ten billion more in reserves than a year ago. So you're seeing these banks really start to ramp up their preparation for what they expect to be. A very tough market of the next year I would also think in the case for every one of these banks has an investment banking arm. Goldman Sachs is the clubhouse leader and I would think that as we are in this environment where it's really hard to imagine any company going public in the next say at least two months Probably closer to four to six months That's one more thing that a bank like Goldman Sachs has to worry about. Yeah Chris absolutely right. So there's just these very high margin parts of their business that are going to start to see. Oh the fluctuations if not complete drops because that market has really started to soften. What's interesting on the Goldman side and Goldman's really going through this this reform under the new? Ceo Their new their new CEO. The bank is really kind of struggled. It's such A. It's such such known as such a class name in the banking space but the stock has actually struggled and the returns on equity have actually trailed their peers over the last few years. There's a real push by the new. Ceo David Salman to start to really invigorate Goldman Sachs again. So we had this whole plan when he became. Ceo after Lloyd Blankfein just recently and then obviously the pandemic hit so but a bright spot to Goldman or big part. Their business has always been there. Trading revenues and. That's actually been kind of a little bit of an Albatross for them over the past couple years but that actually was a bright spot in the first quarter of the same thing with J. P. Morgan Goldman's trading revenues were up twenty eight percent and JP Morgan is trading revenues. Were up thirty two percent so because of all the volatility because of all the frenetic trading activity were seen in the markets from both institutional clients and consumer clients for the big banks. It's mostly institutions were. We saw these results pop up for some of these. Larger banks like Goldman G. P. M. So that's that was one small bright spot in a quarter. That obviously is showing a lot of pain. Jp MORGAN LONG-SERVING CEO. Probably the most respected name and finances. We've talked about Jimmy Diamond. Chris who had suffered a emergency heart surgery a few months ago and came back to the job right in the middle of the as the pandemic starting to really get going. He put out his earning his his His annual letter. He talks about every year and really try to set the tone for the market ahead of what we the financial institutions and banks will see over the next year because there's obviously a lot of concern With just the just the plumbing and the financial picture of US banks. Let's move on to the airline industry because several airlines including Delta American jet blue and southwest have said that they have reached agreements with the US Treasury Department on part of that twenty five billion dollar plan for payroll grants. Obviously this is Good news for those airlines and The people who work there but it really does seem like this. I don't WanNa call it a band aid but it seems like it is a A relatively short bridge. That'll get them through the next couple of months. Hopefully but all the airlines really seemed like they have their work cut out for them Chris. I think I think bridge a bridge. If not band aid bridge I think is a good term apropos because So of the two point two trillion dollar in the stainless package that was signed into law. Last week were in late March. Now the the airlines are starting to work with the Treasury Department to figure out how they can access that and both in grants and loans and as you mentioned a pretty much all of the airlines all the major ones are going to start tapping into this and this is obviously Anita step for businesses. That are really struggling. You're seen bookings that are downed. Seventy ninety percent capacity in the company these companies have they have taken capacity out from their business both domestic and international. So it's really started. There's a heavy fixed cost and these businesses and when they have nobody flying and nobody buying tickets especially business travel which is really slow down. You're starting to see it now. Show up in the potential future of these businesses. But back to your bridge comment. I think these the airlines when I look at almost all the industries that operate and you think about the recovery patterns. I don't know if we're going to be in a v-shaped recovery or more of a U. shape slow growth recovery of both in the US and worldwide. But I do think. The airlines travel companies of all the industries. They will really be in the most flat shape recovery and I think it'll take a while for consumers to be able to come back into the travel mode get used to going back into airplanes. Get used to going back into airports. Airports Basically over the last ten twenty years have become big retail destinations. And you're seeing now foot traffic in the airports drop off a cliff and that's hurting the retail establish establishments inside these airports so that industry is just going to go along a long way to recover. They they needed this. They needed to be a tap the US government to help them support their business. Because without that you would see massive bankruptcies in the Industry Savan to the retail industry because we got the march retail report. And it was. I think every bit as bad as we were all expecting retail across the board down eight point seven percent in the month of March. That is the worst in history. Worst drop in history and context third on the list is the drop in retail that we saw in November. Two thousand eight and this was more than twice as bad in terms of percentages. And you start going through this. And the and of course the lone bright spot is grocery stores up around twenty seven percent but some of these other numbers in here you look at clothing and clothing accessory down. Fifty percent motor vehicles down twenty five percent. These are not but I kind of like we saw with the monthly jobs report for March and we knew that it was much worse because it really the only started They stopped collecting that data mid month. Same thing with retail. I mean I'm looking at one of my thoughts when I was going through. The march retail report was my God. How much worse is April GonNa? Because then we'll have a full month of this crazy was really devastating report. I guess not too surprising considering what we had seen in in late February and obviously there's our own consumer behavior but just for some context first of all that eight point seven percent number. Chris you mentioned is just a drop from February. So it's a month over month seasonally-adjusted number but historically that if you go back. They've collected this data since nineteen ninety-two if you go back. Usually that month-on-month change is in a small less than a percent change so the average is about point three five percents. So it's it's pretty tight. It's a very tight range. You're talking an average of point. Three percent with a standard deviation so changed from an average of less than a percent. So you really talking a very tight range here. You're talking last month. We saw a drop of eight point seven percent so it's significant compared to the average and not in way outside this the norm of what we see the last few decades so like you mentioned the worst number before this was in the great financial crisis when it was when when the number of fell three point eight and three point nine percent back to back. So we're talking twice as much as that drops it just context that about how significant this was just knowing wh- how we have changed as consumers. It's really pretty. It's evident and now we're seeing a show up in the number so as you mentioned some of the areas really got hit just really just a very significantly and then you see you see spots like grocery stores actually have a very significant ramp because as we continue to spend more and more at the groceries try to stock up in preparation for the quarantine that we are all facing and now still face and then you see things like food services and drinking places down twenty six percent from the month before and obviously just showing there that the real impact and that's having ripple effects because when you talk about ten to twenty percent of the global of the US employment is somehow tied to entertainment travel that area getting back to our airlines business.

"Or you can switch and decide and if you work on it and have it to strike swing. Haven't approach on a bath lake slider in a pitcher that's going to throw you a certain pitch over and over and again, and how you're gonna hit that how you're gonna lay off of it all of those things instead of just being the power, dude, we're talking to Jessica Mendoza from ESPN Sunday night baseball who is nice enough to answer the phone when we call fairly regularly. Just what's wrong with the Red Sox? I know they've been better lately, but they were so dominant on the road to winning the World Series last year. And then you look at them. Now, I think they're thirteen and seventeen. So they they could come back. But why do you think they're struggling at least after the first month? Hitching? I mean they've done but they have not been to start the season. And they're kinda per cell through gem last night was much more of himself. Chris sale though. I mean think about him we had him opening day up in Seattle. And I think he's own five. Yeah. And he's, you know, the first to say like, it's, you know, this is not me. I've been awful, you know, when we got to see him live up in Seattle to open up. You know, the stuff was still there. It was just the command. And you gotta remember the Red Sox. You know? And I'm not saying this was a bad decision. Outscore was adamant that his big dogs is pitchers were not going to throw a ton of spring training. I think between Chris sale and David price. They threw a combined nine innings spring training. I mean, it was like insane. Right. Right. You know, traditional standards. So. So then you start the season, and you're really kind of still working through. Now, I've seen every single one of Chris sale starts, but the two that I've seen is isn't so much that like people talk about velocity. And like all the blastings it might not be as as like clearly like at ninety six every time. But the stuff is there. I mean, the guy's stupid when he pitches he doesn't have command. He's missing. And I think that comes with you haven't had the reps that you normally get spring and the reason to outscores credit that he had his pitchers do that is because they were pitching late into the season. And he wanted them to be able like you saw with Chris sale. I mean, he struggled and had put him on the I L last year because he was tired because his arm wasn't able to do everything it could do so trying to prevent that now. And this is the risk of when you do that. So the pitching, I mean that team can rake. I mean, let's you only want go through the lineup of Mason was at every game watching that raking in person Lesko. Painful, the raking. Hey, let me let me pivot back to the dodgers. I wanna ask you about Robert van squawk. Who is now I guess the hitting instructor they've got all these new roles hitting analysts hitting instructor talk to me about the way they've sort of rebuilt that that department and who is van squawk? And where's this focus on situational hitting coming from? Yeah. It's it's interesting is, you know, talking to robber. And a lot of it is really just the buying. You know, I I would say that Turner ward. It wasn't like Turner ward the hitting coach for the last six seven years for the dodgers. Cincinnati Reds Turner ward was saying, hey, I want you to pull everything, you know, if you miss a bunch of fine long as you're hitting home. No. But he got the big because he was saying of the same philosophies to be honest rubber go up with saying the difference is between robber is. He's a player, dude. Like they buy into him. You know? And it's it's. Something with him in. I've been to the facility that he works out of appear in Valencia by where I live, and you know, it's pretty incredible. What Craig while in Brockton him have done there and the buying the gotten from many major league players, you know, including Justin Turner, and AJ Pollock. And now, you know, current dodgers JD Martinez. I mean, and this is before their turn around happened..

"But then I will let me just say that if I was a family member of Chris sale, and I wasn't on payroll. I would had sex with him last night. Seven damn dude embarrassed, I'm barely paying attention to you talking about this tug about the you know, sort of ego involved in I guess you have to you have to have this to be great player. Like Chris sale. I understand why he's embarrassed that need to extend our family plan. But the restaurants pitching's in trouble is still early. I mean, it's it's it's the middle of not may not may I it's the middle of April and the restaurants, and you know, what else poor babies if they don't recover immediately and run the whole thing if they want my four championships in the past fifteen years so four seven eleven with. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no years over seven. So what are we talking about here? Here's what I would say to Chris sale. And I would like in this to Russell Westbrook. Your star play you making a lot of money took respond. I like that his fastball is up to about nine now, and it was at ninety one or ninety two and that was a work in which is why goes to the slider about fifty percent of the time. I agree with you. I think they have the best talent in the league. But I know it's April. I know it's early right now, I want to get the numbers. Right. The ninety seven and nine and the Red Sox are six well as long as you can see the Anki and good. I don't think you have fan rate as one that division in fairly recent history. Once we know Madden pay so. They're competing with the Yankees. But I think I think sale is doing the right thing by taking. Yes. But but for the rest of the world the rest of us that we're supposed all panic. Are you embarrassed for Chris sale? No, no. I'm no, I'm no break, but coming up high Lowry and Jamal Murray respond to their critics Ryan Patrick this. Do you see him a second? He must really really like birthing. He's got big hurry. Really? We should the videos not doctored. While not we don't know. I'm sure the dog stole the cornmeal Muffin. I'm sure of that. All of the honorary doctors wearing their doctors coats. So we're ready to fill in some what's I e r made ball Murray's fourth quarter was blank series saving. This doesn't mean. The Denver is going to win this series. Okay. But if they have lost the first two at home, the San Antonio they were done, and this guy was fairly unlikely at this point because to that point in the fourth quarter. He was oh for eight. He had only three points. But in the fourth quarter, he went eight or nine from the field. He scored twenty one Denver was down by as many as nineteen Hillary doesn't get hot. They lose it would simply twice nineteen. So there you go. And this was not a turn this set off situation because in Denver, but I'm looking at this going. Wow, they're going to be down. Oh, two. And he did say you're right about that. Tony it was also responsive because his coach Mike alone to figure out some things am I going to start limiting his minutes and bring somebody off the bench. Do I think bringing Isaiah Thomas? No, I need my second best player. I mean, I the best players is yoga, but I need him. And he was spotted in the quarter of the season. That's Kyle Lowry should feel blank after last night's win. He should feel relieved because he was so awful in the first game. He had zero points zero. He's a multiple all star guard, and he had disappeared at home. Now he did. Well, if he got zero again, they would've traded him by midnight. He got twenty two points. He was eight for thirteen from the field and Toronto one saving themselves.

"And they know that and that's their freedom. And Clinton Yates says the blazers are in the thunderhead if you agree with that Kevin Blackstone. Well, I think the blazers in the blazers head, you know, a few years ago, we talked about Terry Stotts having to replace four starters in the fabulous. You had people said he's really coach of the year. They go into the playoffs. No nurkic. Everybody says. Wow. Well, the guards are going to have to pick up the scoring guess what? The guards picked up the scoring and they're playing fabulous defense on top of that. And they're hustling Terry Stotts has a way of inspiring those guys to take it to a level that is that is needed to win. That's how they winning. Breaking down the seeds going into the post season a lot of people circled. This was the matchup at the six could not offered. Three. Does anybody believe the thunder can come back here at this point? After seeing the first two games, Ramone, you're still giving that a chance. Yeah. When you you know, as as Rachel Nichols, always says to make miss league. Great. So they've been missing everything they just start to make some of their outside shots. They can get right back in. I mean, they you know, you've lost to Rogaine. I. She really coined the phrase, it's a maker missed league. Segment. I always said, you know, series starts at the home team loses. So I believe. Disappointment with. Sodium flare Chris sale is just getting on this year. So the Yankees the Red Sox last night the on injured Yankees, I should say Clint Frazier. Mike talk me sale is full into Owen four in this season. Let's listen to the game. Stink right now. I don't know what it is flat out and bears for my family for my team our fans, this is this is about. Sarahspain? How worry should Boston B would sail? This should be with the Red Sox right now. Yeah. I mean sales already accumulated as many losses this year as he did all of last year. That's obviously, a worry. But they're starting ERA is the worst in the history of the team through eighteen games. They've allowed more runs than any other staff in baseball. And by the way, Mookie Betts sitting to twelve. So if you're just worried about sale, you might need to look at how the rest of the team is under performing there's still plenty of time. It's early, but it's not just about sale. They haven't won every game that he hasn't started either. So it's a team duly noted. Let me ask you, this Clinton Yates can the Red Sox beat the Red Sox? Chris sale is in Chris sale. Do think they can be. But I think that Chris sales problems are bigger than they're willing to admit listen going back to spring training..

"Man think about all the running that went into that contract. And he said, Yep. And I'm going to do some more running in this guy. He's highly respected you love how he put himself. On the line to do everything he could possibly win in the in the postseason last year. Throwing the final pitch that slider to strike out. Manny Machado, he gets a huge contract. And I've talked a lot of folks with other teams who are wondering why in the heck the Red Sox did it. They were surprised in this spring of a lot of team friendly deals. This felt like a great player friendly deal. And I was surprised that the Red Sox extended themselves in that way. What about you? Yeah. It was a little surprised because we know how his season ended last year with with the shoulder issues. The velocity down. He was still getting batters out in the playoffs. But it wasn't the same Chris sale. And I know obviously, they've checked those medical records over and over and deemed them healthy. But it just feels like there's a lot of long term health risk here with Chris sale. I know we've been saying that since he first came up to the majors with that unusual delivery. But it does feel like the Red Sox are the team taken the risk here. All right, one player who hasn't signed Francisco endure the Cleveland Indians Sports Illustrated reported in the spring of two thousand seventeen that he turned down an offer from Cleveland of about one hundred million dollars and Paul Dolan, one of their owners was quoted in Sports Illustrated, recently when or excuse me, he was the athlete. He was asked. What fans should think about Lindor and his answer was enjoy him. I kind of when I when I read it. I'm like, yeah. He's right. We told you at the podcast this spring where okay he's going to be with the Indians in two thousand and nineteen. He probably will start two thousand twenty with Cleveland but midway through the twenty twenty season. It wouldn't surprise me. Once he comes within a year and a half a free agency.

"Fantasy draft March second. Yes, this is like his favorite month of the year jet like from early February to early March because he has his birthday on February. Second right. Yep. Okay. Then Valentine's Day, and he takes out, you know, a baseball baseball glove tonight. Yes, Valentine's but gonna let the candle raining opens and Chris sales talking about loving playing in Boston. Right. And then of course, you get to the fantasy draft early March. That's like his favorite thirty day. Aren't you gonna really struggle this year and fancy baseball because you give up like every pic, you had won the championship and they won. So that means more. But yeah, I don't have a second third or fourth round. So you'll like the Florida Marlins and ninety seven thousand. But his different pay the next. Here's difference. I will find a way. Yes. To compete like a check. I would invent your good way. Maybe you can get some good value for for some of those free agents who are in the market right now Christian. Yeah. Machado go 'cause I have all my picks. And if you draft Bryce Harper Manny Machado in your fantasy league, crystal I'm guessing we're going to hear the guessing they're going to be gone, but I make up all the pictures. I missed in the second draft. Yeah. Start from the beginning. Not no protective players anything. So, but I make up all the picks. I missed by the end of the sixth. Okay. So I get them all back early. Who goes first this year, we have done inside the day of. But no who goes first among the players trout, or is Trump, probably I would imagine unless you wanted to always I would think Buki the unless you take the star pitcher because again in my league, anyways, it's head to head and it's based on categories is five pitching categories five categories. So there's no different take a major seems like a no brainer. He's you know, what you're going to get at a bare minimum. Yeah. And you get to Kim for five years. Here's like there's virtually no risk in dull, adding Mike trout, Rick risk in taking Chris sale in a fancy draft signing Chris sale to a long term contract because like, Kyrie Irving. He hasn't been the most durable guys mistime the last two years as pitch much better than the first three months than in the last three months didn't really contribute a lot in the postseason last year. Although you got the final three outs against the dodgers. That was more of a thank you for your service. The last two years get these final three outs because first of all Craig kimbrel awful in the awful. They use them correctly. Chris sale is still just south of thirty or just approaching thirty right around thirty anyway. What type of contract should the Red Sox offer Chris sale, and how far should they go in terms of years in dollars while I think they would be wise to wait out the season and see what Chris sales gotta be this year before you make that determination if you offer an extension now, maybe you'd be able to save a little bit. But. You could be paying for somebody years down the line who has nothing left. So I think it's important, and we talked about this as the season was wrapping up last year when we were sort of. Sort of going through the roster in the decisions the Red Sox to make on free agents over the next couple of seasons with sale he keeps coming back to the durability. And wondering how well can you pick for a long period of time? He's had arm troubles before. And he's been maybe he's pitched too much rather than resting his arm. So for for me, if I'm the Red Sox, I see can he do it for a full year? And then I make that determination on how much I pay more. How many years I offer him? What you look at him. He just turned thirty on March thirtieth. So he's he's entering his prime. But there's a lot of wear and tear a ton. Okay. And really last year was the only time he didn't pitch a significant amount of innings pitched one hundred and fifty eight innings the year before he led the major leagues with two hundred and fourteen innings. But he clearly was not the same pitcher in August. And September last year. He didn't pitch a lot after the all star break up. The question is to with Chris. Sale is due. Even know what the malady was kept hearing shoulder is it what is it? Like there was never clearly defined what the problem was could have just been fatigue. That's what you think. But they give him plenty of rest, and he come back, and he just didn't look again, there's so many miles on him. Now, even though he is entering his prime it for what the age should be for a for star pitcher what his prime should be. But he has so much mileage on his arm and in his brief time with the Red Sox. We sort of seen how it goes starts off like a bat out of Al looks like he's going to run away with the Cy Young, and then sort of tails off the last two months of the season. And that's he's a phenomenal pitcher when he's on. You could make an argument. He's the best pitcher in baseball. It's fifteen hundred innings in his career slot innings in their hide innings because he's a strikeout pitcher. But and that's the way baseball is. Now the days of Greg Maddux with an eighty four pitch complete game. You know, that doesn't happen. But so when he's on I think he. E again that discussion you certainly discussion. But it when he's not he's sort of a middle of the road patriots. You're gonna be paying that guy thirty million dollars a year, and you have Mukhi bats. And you've Zander Bogart's coming up for contracts, and you have to renegotiate Martinos coming. It is. So just going to say they may get lucky 'cause I didn't kiss Chris Gwynn the signing award this year. But the way the market is now he may not get what he wants. What Machado and Bryce Harper. They were like three forty million dollars. And it doesn't look like either one's going to get that David price say was asked about opting in. And he goes, we'll have you looked at the market, right? The free agent market, isn't what it used to be. So so maybe the Red Sox get lucky in that that they can pay them less because no one's willing to pay more. Even if he wins the sale I think that sale would have a couple of things going for him in terms of free agency in the market picking up a little bit for him. One is he'll be the best pitcher in the open market in since this sort of weird free agency bubble. That's negatively impacted players financially Yuccas Burland or never hit the open market. He signed a long term deal with Detroit. They sell for one day. There's value in pitchers, obviously, there's always going to be value in front of the line starting pitchers in too because the Red Sox are these are we assume are going to be perennial World Series contenders. Others other teams are more likely to want to step in and take something away from them especially team like the Yankees. Or maybe it seemed like the Blue Jays comes in and you wanna poach from your alias competition. So that could really help his market in my mind because the Red Sox are so good versus this past year. I mean, yes, the dodgers got there. But he was only there Machado is only on the dodgers for half a season. The nationals weren't really competitive this past year. So I don't think there's as much motivation for other teams with their rivals. The necessarily say we need to get this guy off of this team to make to make them worse and make ourselves better. The other thing too is how much do you spend on your pitching staff because David price is on board for the next four years of thirty one million dollars a year. Right. You cite Nathan of all the for essentially seventeen million dollars a year. Rick. Portillo also going to be free agent at the end of the year. Now, obviously the sexy pick would be keep sale. Let forsillo walk very durable. But you seem they'll make anywhere close to what the other is going to make a sale you assume would make a lot more than Portillo. Sure. But Portillo's making twenty two right now, but in free agency can be free agents. He seemed time what did Patrick Corbin signed for? He signed for one hundred million dollars for five years. I would think Portillo is as good as Patrick Corbin. Right. So I could see port solo getting four eight four eighty on the open market, right? So let's say twenty million year. And let's say that Chris sale is thirty million a year. You're looking at thirty one for price thirty for sale. If you wanna keep Portillo twenty and seventeen equally pitching staff, that's just added up on tenable. It's it's ninety seven million dollars on four guys. It'll by the way, you got movie Betson, JD Martinez and Zander Bogart's and continue on. But yeah, you're gonna pay JD Martine. Is after this year right often. No, he's also. Maybe but still I would think, but they're willing to testify and he's got Boers signed late with the Red Sox, obviously. But I wouldn't be surprised if they at least test the market because his contract was four for one hundred right? You want to see what heartbreaking but twenty five million a year may be about what the market is for JD Martinez. If if Harper Machado, a thirty million dollars a year players, which I think they are. But who knows what the market bears, then JD Martinez is a little below those guys in he's a better hitter than those guys. But those guys obviously offer you defensive value. There are a little bit younger. And that's a big part of it. Also. Fat face facts. The biggest stars JD Martinez is tremendous is a tremendous hitter. He's not even the biggest star in his team rookie bets. But Scott Boras isn't gonna build them that way. No, that's I'm just saying he'd play test the market. I'm not saying they end up losing money. Maybe he will. He could be dangerous. If again, how much is enough if you're a player, and you go, okay. Let let's often I really like it here if I've got. Two more years at fifty million total at three at seventy five or whatever it may be. Yeah. Let's this is the best thing for for JD Martinez would be if the Red Sox win a World Series again because then teams are again really gonna want to poke something sure Red Sox you want to take away from that team. And he's probably less big contract. This is going to be it from five years now plenty of money on this contract. If he just plays it out either way, but everybody wants more, and that's, but that's but everybody wants more, but yet to be realistic to you don't want to opt out and cost yourself an extra six seven seven million dollars. Because the money's not there. So yes, the gate four. Hi, rather than you know, maybe going. I don't think that wear eagle you a boy as I thought when he signed it. It was a foregone conclusion he's gonna opt out now. Not so sure that that's right. That's why price said what he said. Why would I possibly opt out of potentially lifting for years one hundred? Did you wouldn't make close to what he's made again? Even though he had have tremendous World Series. There's still he's thirty two question. Why it made him maybe eight million dollars less per year than that Gasunie five twenty six million dollar range at because I don't know where where the level is. Now, we don't know we just assume that because what two years ago Giancarlo Stanton sign this ridiculous contract that the Marlins had back loaded, and then they decided they couldn't afford it. So they moved him that. Yeah. We we all agree. I mean, Christian may disagree but Machado and Harper a better than Giancarlo Stanton. Started to touch back on what we kick this conversation with Chris sale in the decision. The Red Sox are gonna have to make with him going forward. If you're the Red Sox..
