Woodrow cox. I'm a staff writer at the washington post. And i'm the author of children under fire in american crisis. Also a bit of a path forward in ways that we could make some small differences to help those kids both before and after they suffer trauma from gun wiles. I think intimate is a perfect word to describe this book as you detail. The ways in which children are impacted by gun violence through stories of a handful of children. What i'm wondering is what prompted you to write. Not just about the physical effects of gun violence in what that effect is on children but the psychological ex i think that so much of the coverage around the way that kids are impacted by gun. Violence focuses on the kids who get shot. We have such a narrow focus. And this really applies. I think to adults as well. There's this really narrow focus on and that's the headlines. I mean we can look at what happened yesterday. As an example. There's a school shooting all the cable news. Networks make a calculation to say. Let's wait and see how many people died right. One person died they move on. That's not an high enough death

But we're just not going to talk about. Yeah that's an interesting part. I mean we've probably talked. 'but people find in the past sure i imagine so. Yeah i think we had opposite on actually did we. Actually i couldn't remember. It seems like something we've done but only because just so on brand that it feels like we've done it before. Like ben thought we did a shark question before we did a shark quit rate they feel like i remember making the thumbnail for it and pretty sure we did it. I can picture. The thumbnail may head so theoretically exists somewhere in our back catalogue. It's an early episode. So actually chris. You don't really have to go flat episode because you're going to be the first one answering this question. I am so up so twenty. One by the way found ended for me. Yes so yeah. When i was thinking of this question the first thought that popped in my head was like birds flying into windows lot so like if all animals could fly. This would probably be a problem with other animals as well. Not just birds silent. Look a little more into that. And i didn't want to look at every single animal. I just wanted to focus on one. So i looked at the most populous. Animals and cows are the most populous animal other than humans at one point. Four six billion cows and that after that herb pigs and sheep at one billion each But i just want with cows so what. What if what happens if a cow flies in doing. I imagine it's going to be a lot worse than bird. A bigger splash on. Yeah but before it gets. I went to like look at birds. Like birds fly into windows in general like the statistics behind it so smithsonian researchers studied this in twenty fourteen. They estimated that arranged they ran the give like a pretty big range but They said three hundred sixty five million to one billion birds per year die from Find a window

And I think this commitment really enforces the connection we have to our community the importance of this in our community and what we know for generations is that Simen Systemic racism has created a racial wealth gap in America, and one of the elements of this billion dollar, commitment or billion dollar plus commitment is it's just support those communities of color and to close that help support to close that. Racial wealth gap. Today. White family has eight times the wealth of black families and five times out of Hispanic Latino families. And so we want to make sure that we are doing work in the space around entrepreneurship and innovation, housing, small business and quite honestly health to be able to support and close that wealth gap. If there were no pandemic, would we still be doing something like this? I think that the pandemic has definitely laid bare for us. The equities that we see particularly Communities of color around health. And so you know, I think this is a place that we we've had some work in that we've done some some elements of health. But the way that we've doubled down in health is really definitely connected to our response and wanting to support these

You know I wanted to be able to be able to say my name and that's. That's a whole new thing that's I. Don't think that's a bad thing I think that's you being humble. Like why would you assume? You know it's everyone would know you. If you assume everyone knows you. That might be a narcissistic traits, but it's more humble if you if you do that, but I know what you're saying I kind of do it. Sometimes do, but I think I. Cut you off. No, no, no no and I think it might be from the south and so there's a little bit of like. There's a little bit of that in grain there's. As crazy as it sounds, there's like certain abilities that if you grew up in the south, we just raised with and and it was. I, don't know maybe I was always taught like. Just. Be Like I. Dunno like introduce yourself. Don't assume that everyone knows you. I like doing it and situations. Where especially after? A comedy show and people come up to me, but it's like maybe like forty minutes later on. I'm just hanging out the bar. Maybe they didn't see see the show did. I like doing it especially. If I kind of think might because of. Who you are made man. Feel good. I saw I saw. Let me rephrase this..

Today we're going to be talking about as you mentioned managing with pressure on a station thirty two hundred, so I was like to start off with why why are we even talking about this? I've been in the industry. A little over thirty years and flow data has always been around during that time that I've been industry. And it's proven really valuable, and we know that flow and pressure are related, but they're different. They're not the same thing. We we have seen systems where with too low pressure, and then we get poor coverage and poor. D You, that's we see that pretty commonly. But we see the inverse to right, we have excess pressure, and that causes misting and drift net gives us bad coverage in poor d you as well so either end of the spectrum. We've got issues. We also know that a change of ten percent in in a ten PSI change. is going to give us a up to a forty percent increase in water, use or water consumption the. We're seeing this this connection between those two, so we can better manage our system pressure. We can it better manage our. Resources our water on our systems I think the other thing about this. Is that pressures another data point that we can use to make better management decisions on our irrigation? Yeah, more, we know. Better already helpful for Diagnostics too, so I don't remember if we got into that, but if there's something that wasn't working correctly, let's say yesterday flow is it's great data point to be able to reference to to make a correlation to.

So basically about like eight months ago by haven't done anything and I was walking across the lawn and all I did was just simply just kick little stick. I just kicked US stick and boom. I felt this pain in my left knee. And what is that later? Come find out. I tore my meniscus and basically just in it was just as simple as just kicking a little stick in the yard and basically come down to the point of I just wasn't working out and everything was just kinda teary aiding a little bit. So working out is so so so important and just being activists so As you get older yeah and I can't wait to work out today. I'm really looking forward to it Because it does and you know. Here's a question I have. We only have about two minutes so I I WANNA try to get this in so you know. We know that it's not possible to lose weight in any specific area of the body. I think most people know that but but can any isolation Isolation exercises modify a certain part of the body like for instance. Give someone a flat stomach or Yes they can't. They can't modify them You know we wanNA talk about when when you when you're trying to get that six pack and and obviously we all know that that diet is GonNa be your number one to be able to reveal that that six pack doing doing doing planks doing anything that really activates that inner girl is going to be the best isolation type exercises to develop. I did what was that one and we want to get to this last question but I remember last week and we only have about. You talked about like putting a broomstick or something and like what did you. What did you call that? Where you like Switzerland? I still haven't done it by the way. Yeah no that was more of a compound. But it's it's going to tighten the integral talking about Yeah literally just sit on the edge of the couch. Put a broomstick over your shoulders and just twist for fifteen minutes watch. Tv and just twist and integral instead of pushing everything out you know because when you do wait it exercises your muscle and they'll get bigger and that's not what you want to do. You're not trying to push stomach out so right well okay. My last question is is Is Your daily exercise routine. You know Does it does it. Are there any For You specifically are there. Any exercises either compound isolated. That are your go to to help you stay fit as much as I hate him. Dead lifts are too I live. That's my favorite actor. Well for me because I have a fractured back. Well Hack I forgot. I'm suffering would be good for that. But you know cody. I hear the music song going to wrap up the show. Always a pleasure. Yeah okay so you said earlier before I des- sidetracked one of the things all my a listener says that I like sidetrack and interrupt sometimes so we do. I get that all the time yeah. No people tell me that I do that too. I think it's because you get nervous as a host that you want to keep up the conversation and you don't want to like forget to ask the questions when they're writing about something else. It's tough people don't realize how tough it because I see you so funded. It is so fun but you're also trying to be professional and so it's like you probably didn't go to school for broadcasting or journalism and so you're just winging. It and it's just normal no conversation so it's I get. I love your podcast but you need to stop interrupting your guest. I get that all the time if it makes you feel better that actually yeah yeah. I think it's a host thing because you just trying to keep the conversation and engaged in. I don't know I I get it to. Okay but the circle back yes you said we're not nervous when you went on the bachelor right with Chris Right where you expecting to fall in love with him no and I think I just was in a place in my life where I was ready to like do something that was an opportunity or something out there. That's always just kind of been who I it's who I am to take risks and just go after things and not even think twice about it and so I was working at a restaurant. I felt like a little stuck in my life. I was kind of in a Rut didn't know what I wanted to do with my life and so it was kind of a why not it's an opportunity. Let's do it fall in love great. He seems like a great guy. That's those kind of my mentality going into it and just kind of had nothing to lose at that point. That's a good place to be yeah. Yeah it was and freedom. Almost yeah and you know it's so weird is because you feel isolated there. You have no phone no friends. You can't talk to family. You can't go on the Internet net. You can't watch T._V.. You don't read books. You're just zoned in on a relationship but I actually felt free in a way because I I knew I had nowhere else to be and I didn't have to answer to anybody and I just was kind of. I'd just kind of surrendered surrendered to the process and took it as like time to get to know myself. What did you learn about yourself? I learned that I was a lot tougher than I thought I was. The Guy gave myself enough credit for for being thriving thick skin and and even just my confidence like I was like Oh because you know you're surrounded by women and a lot of times in life and I don't know why this is but some women like to tear other women down in especially when you're competing for one guy on the show in the situation is yeah but I just made so many friends and I just I don't know I just feel like I I learned that I didn't give myself enough credit in life for for confidence and and for having thick skin so you actually got more confidence..

"Make sure you're following us at ESPN radio at Spain and Fitz at Clinton Yates. And I am at Jason the numeral one golf because I am one of those idiots. Has a number in his Twitter feed, which is problematic at times. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I so something that's about to happen here Clinton that you know. I don't know if I'm opposed to it or I am extremely down with it. But it's going to happen. No matter what people have called. Because apparently we have we have struck the ire of Laker nation in Laker fan. And I hate young anything nation. So here we go. Well, let's do it. Let's go South Carolina was hit it up with Chris Chris wants to talk about everything that is LeBron Lakers after we laid out this beautiful platform him. What up Chris? Good. I'm just gonna host up an NBA fan my whole life. But you know, I think this this LA thing is compass symptomless what's wrong with the whole league right now. I, you know, I remember the Lakers old, and I enjoyed watching them. But you know, when you put so much power in the hands of a player, and the player is telling me who I can hire the coach. So no how Pat rally got there though. Right. Right. Right. Johnson fired Paul rested. Right, right. But you know, this is an extreme of that. I think I mean, look what happened. Thanks the phone call. I appreciate it. But here's the thing to Chris's right in Chris's. Right. Listen to me why Chris Chris, right? Because this is the Lakers. The Lakers are not prepared for this kind of situation. Any other team can deal with the player predicting or deciding with the coach can't be Lakers on ready for this? The Lakers were not ready for as Momo so eloquently put it planet. Lebron to come in this. He's actually right in this particular scenario. I don't think he's running for the league lead writ large. But in this case legs can deal with it. And the problem to their point still hasn't actually picked a coach he could help them out a lot by saying this the guy I want anyhow. So now when his hands are off, everybody's everybody's angry that his hands aren't more on. Because I with the one I want is the one that was advertised which is that he comes in. He does what he's got to do. And if not then you've gotta take some responsibility for what hasn't happened. What's going bash for fifteen years for doing that? He finally me mashing. Did you hear new passion? But I'm talking about the Royal we as a sports fan of. So you didn't hear it Clinton is what no I'm not gonna hear people talk about. We're gone always. I can parse the two things. I didn't have a problem with it. Then because the guy was that good, and it made sense for the operations in the outfits. He was at Cleveland Cavaliers, you Dag on a real LeBron's run on the show for the Cavaliers. All right. That makes sense. He went down to Miami. Where Pat Riley had a little bit of pushback it allowed him to operate within the realm that he needs to operate in. But still kept it on track. The Lakers are currently a combination of none of that. And it's much much worse who do and that's what I'm saying. At this point, you almost need him after having built up that credibility as having been able to do it to step in and do it now when the franchise needs. That's what I'm saying. All right. Let's go out to Birmingham camera wants to jump on the show Spain and fits their out this the Spain is fit show on ESPN radio Clinton Yates, and Jason golf was going on camera. What was going on fellow? You got was listen, I am calling in because all the media is seemed to be talking about Iran. Don't get me wrong. The guys was a decent coach, and Cleveland, you know, he wanted to. Ron okay. You wanna Samson? We'll do will have anybody could have wanted tension with Iran. And that saying, you know, he's ornament. But you know, you know, you know, this is this is this is a nation..
