"You're being a dead horse here. I just want to thank you. Thank you. I appreciate it, you know, And what's shocking to me is that people? Can everything you can know about a person can't go out the window right? Like whether it's someone you went to high school with whether it's a family member, whether it's a friend, and it's being played out all over our country and in a bunch of different ways. And and I will be honest. I know we're not trying to this. I see it coming Maura from one side. Specifically people who are voting for Trump are written out of people's lives. You can know everything about this person. You could have spent 30 years knowing that this is a great person and that if if you found out that they're voting for for this man, if it all goes away, not even voting for Trump Me voting for a third party. Has brought about some of the most disgusting and disappointing comments from people who are close to me that I could puke and you're right. It's not even it's not even a trump thing. It's a if you're not exactly on board with everything I think then. You must be evil or you must not want equality and you have to be right. I mean, just everything can be washed away and a person's entire existence and everything they've ever done in their life could be washed away with a single vote. In the opinion of some, because they're not voting for the candidate that you want them to vote for. They immediately will equate that to you being part of the problem right? And so that's where the division that we keep seeing, and everything is evoking fear. That's why people are going to the grocery store and filling their carts up with water because there Afraid of what's gonna happen The day after the election. Where is the water going to their assets? I guess Everywhere I go. I have seen people there's loading their cards of water. I'm like Should I do that? I will say here is a good thing if you if you think it's a little too crazy to stock up on water and supplies for the election, you're like I'm not going to buy into the fear. Just know there is a potential hurricane churning in the Caribbean. That could be here next week. So might as well say, Okay, Trump better get used to it might as well stock up now under the guise of a hurricane. And if all Hell breaks loose with the election. You'll be covered two double life. Hi. Who are you? What are you good hurricane with this one. I don't know. Go ahead. Surprise. Sorry about that. I'm fine with Hurricane Trump making off the like How women in Congress that all have come together like you. Everything earlier you If you saw that you called Governor's political campaign video yet I haven't saw it well. Then Terry Cox and Chris Peterson made a video together even though they're opposing governors and really good video. How anyone could come together and vote for Oh, a better person and still haven't thank you. Thanks for the heads up, man. So also the candidates did it. Wow. Wow, This is really cool. I'm Chris Peterson and I'm Spencer Cox. We are currently in the final days of campaigning against each other to be your next governor. And while I think you should vote for me, I really used to vote for me. There are some things we both agree on Weekends debate issues without degrading each other's character. We can disagree without hating each other and win or lose and Utah we work together. So let's show the country that there's a better way. My name's Chris Peterson and.

"Think you should vote. For me. Yeah. But but really you know for me, there are some things we both agree on weekends debate issues without degrading each other's character. We can disagree without hating each other and win or lose in. Utah we worked together. So let's show the country that there's a better way my name's Chris Peterson and I'm Spencer Cock and we approve this message. No that's that's a great ad well, but it leads into our attack out of the week of course. And runner-up features governor. Whitman. In a cameo role, it comes from the MIDAS touch. So. When did I she? You GotTa get you governor to open up. Locked. Why were. You.

"Each other. But they have produced a bunch of different spots saying, Hey, no matter what. We're all Americans. I'm Chris Peterson. And I'm Spencer Cox. We're currently in the final days of campaigning against each other to be your next governor. But today we've come together with the message Maurin important than our differences that we will fully support the results of the presidential elections. So Utah can be an example to the nation. Whether you vote by mail or in person, your vote determines the outcome. And then we commit to a peaceful transfer of power. It is the very foundation of our country and we ask that you stand with us. That's cool. Ursula. Yeah, keep going. That's all I want you to keep. I want you to keep going. You know that. You you and I and Chef discussed this yesterday and it is something that we try to do on the show. But I want you t share your thoughts and then and then we can discuss even further. That's cool. His coup is cooled to the point where this is what we talked about yesterday and when we need to talk, and we start talking about us, having hope And hope about their things. Going back to normal. I don't know if normal is because it will be a new normal and we've heard that before, But I do think that no matter where you align with your beliefs At the end of the day. You still are tired of the fighting. It reminds me of being kids and your hearing your parents fight in the house. You don't really pick a side and at that time you really don't care. Only thing you really care about is for them to stop fighting. And I think yes, we all care about what's going on today, but We still want the fighting to stop because the fighting helps none of us like way get nowhere from the fighting. So I want to play one more ad because I just I love this idea so much and to be If only we could go back to where you completely disagree with someone. But you can continue to be respectful and you know whether you win or you whether you lose, you continue to stay. It basically take the high road. I'm Chris Peterson and I'm Spencer Cox. We are currently in the final days of campaigning against each other to be your next governor. And while I think you should vote for me but really used to vote for me, there are some things we both agree on Weekend debate issues without degrading each other's character. We can disagree without hating each other and win or lose and Utah. We work together, So let's show the country that there's a better way. My name's Chris Peterson and I'm Spencer Cock and we approve. This message, OK, I'm almost want to vote for both of them just for that, But and obviously that that can't be the case. But The's next couple of weeks are going to be really, really rough. And then think about afterward and we've talked about whether are you willing to lose friendships over politics or you are. Are you willing to Just cut people off because they don't see I die on certain things. And I think we just need Thio know that there is a path forward where we can all be under the same tent. No matter how Different. We are because again. Just in terms of basic humanity were the same. I think I think often times like so many things when it comes to civility is many of us fall into the trap of well, that has nothing to do with me, so I'm just going to stay out of it. Whether it's people, whether it's boss's corporate America when things don't impact you Then you feel like a well is just not my problem. When At the end of the day, Like what's going on in our country is all of us problem like it's a problem for all of us, So we have to want things to stop. We have to want The public health crisis to get better because These businesses that are closing down these small businesses that are closing down all over the country and people losing their jobs. That's a real thing, whether or not you believe in mask or not. That is a real thing. So the civility part is that we keep saying we we all have to do a better job of figuring out Where can what can we all agree on? And I think that The best part of civility. Ursula that I have ever seen in our country was September 12th. 2001 13th 14th. When our country banded together and we were civil with each other. We all agreed that that was our country. That was a threat. There was a terrorist act on our country in as a matter of fact, when you go to the airport You can no longer go and see Grandma and Grandpa and Mom and Dad. You have to. You can't do that anymore. And guess what We all said. Okay. And that rule has stayed in place Steel for the 19 years. You have to now take your shoes off. Okay, Guess what? That's still a rule. So there I know that our country Kid can together on things. We've done it before. I've seen it. Now we've had it in us. But again, A lot of lot has changed since then, And that includes social media. So one of the big things that we are Tackling right now is how do you ensure or or remain civil? A while. Engaging on social media, which is such a difficult thing because people forget that there are other people at the other end at the receiving end, and they will just put whatever and and it can be, like, scorch the earth kind of stuff. You know where If you were ever to say that to someone in person. You just wouldn't. I mean, you just wouldn't and yet it is allowed. And so it is something that we struggle with. It is something that we will continue have conversations about. But I loved hearing this big push towards civility and starting with two people who are challenging each other for the same race. How awesome is that? I got a text that came in and somebody, some Texas says. It's because they're Mormon. Nobody understands being your brother's keeper Mohr than Mormon. And so I thought, you know what, Ursula? That's a nice low Segway into be telling you something. Okay? Did you know that I was baptized Mormon almost 20 years ago. No, you need to write a book and all the things that I find out about. You know, I did not that. That's a very true story. And those listening right now that are Mormon. They'll know when I say things like, Choose the right. And I'll say things like on Mondays how I would have family home evenings and how every single Sunday I'd be in church for three years and how I followed the words of wisdom. True story. But again during that time. I have to say that I did learn a lot during that time, and I do believe that civility is very important for our country. I think it's equally is important for our communities and no doubt important for our families. How about that? And in workplace.

"The nation. Whether you By mail or in person. Your vote determines the outcome. And then we commit to a peaceful transfer of power. It is the very foundation of our country and we ask that you stand with us about that little civility in politics. We need more of that. Only it'll never catch, unfortunately not. But in the meantime, Array for AH, Democrat Chris Peterson, his Republican opponent, Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, running in Utah for the Office of Governor. Standby. Vaughn used. Early Bowl Games, CFB Playoff & a Conversation with Jim Delany
"Joe's I'm Stewart Mandel L.. Joined by Bruce Feldman for our Christmas week episode Bruce a really special guest Pleased to have the outgoing big ten commissioner Jim Delaney on this show here a little bit. He is down to his last ten days or so on the job. But I How is your house your viewing experience first weekend of Bowl Games? It was good I got to see most of the Games. It was one thing I'll say is it was three. NFL Games. That ran on Saturday in those games. Were more competitive Than some of the bowl games I gotTA admit You know hats off to Fau. They had a coaching change and even without the coaching change. I think a lot of people would have thought okay. You have a bigger group of five really good team. SMU AGAINST A smaller group of five and it turned out to be a blow out but not the way. Yeah probably a lot of us would have expected so hats off to the owls. I thought that was a real head-turner The other one that jumped out at me. I think is Kent State it considering how bad that program was Not long ago I mean Sean. Lewis has stepped up there and really made a a huge impact. They are a fun team to watch they at their first bowl win in school history On the first first day of the bowl games it was one of those reminders of what I think because they had to really scrap just to get to be bowl eligible. I think that they are a great example of Y. No there aren't too many bowls it's five hundred team that got into a bowl game. They were impressive how they handled it. And it means a ton to that program Graham and I think Those players deserve the spotlight. Yeah I got that one wrong. I picked Utah State to win by like thirty. Whoops that's bowl season for ya the SMU ONE SMU Fau? Definitely surprise me as well. I think that that. SMU's one of those teams that got a lot the hype because they were doing things they hadn't done a long time and then it just kind of unraveled You know their their signature win was TCU and then TCU doesn't end up making a ballgame So hey that crazy shootout with memphis though You know it's interesting. There was a time when everybody was lobbying for their respective team. Conference for the Group of five New Year six bowl and Michael Rescue was furious that at one point. SMU is ranked behind Appalachian State. Obviously Mountain West. People were furious. That Boise State didn't get more credit Compared to the AC and then both SMU eastbound Boise State Mountain West Champ gets blown out by Washington honestly a Washington team. That wasn't all that great this year but I felt like nick and kind of I think you had the same hunches. Well and Chris Petersen's last game that they would. They would come to play and they did. That was a Thorough domination and now we all wait to see what Jacobson do. Yeah look I mean this is now Jimmy Lakes program. There's already been a little staff shakeup. Bush Hamden the offense coordinator. WHO's there for two seasons? He is already out as well as One other offense of assistant so one thing to keep an eye on and I'm GonNa have a story on this on the athletic Later this week is there's a lot of sizeable offensive coordinator vacancies out there. So Bunch in the PAC twelve oregon is looking for an offense coordinator as his Washington. As is cal- I think there's going to be quite a few more coming There's you know look. There could be a few big ones in the south as well as the ones that already have had coaching changes. This is where they're looking for guys so it's an interesting subplot to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks Again as we mentioned a few weeks back You you know. We both have a lot of respect for Chris. Peterson thought it was cool. To see the way he went out We'll see if he ever comes back to coaching or what he does next. He's somebody I would. I'd love to have on the podcast at some point down the road Just because I always thought he was one of the more interesting people in coaching even though sometimes he didn't always WanNa show oh you his hand publicly so hats off to him stew before we get to Jim Delany though This is probably our only chance to restore at least on the audible to talk about the semi final games. And you'd think it feels like they're way off in the distance but as we're taping this They're less than a week away. feels like the right up on us. Does I mean to me. The teams arrived working on this part on Sunday night and the teams arrived. I think a couple of them at least arrived in Phoenix already. It's nuts it's It's playoff semi final week already. So how do you break this down. I know you didn't want to tip your hand on what was going on especially in Europe ballgame. You're going to be covering the one in Phoenix covering the one Atlanta for the athletic. So Oh

"No question mark and if it's cold by Chris Peterson at the activity for the team and it's also a special teams are outstanding and you're always gonna get trick plays from Chris but Chris issues solved all the notes no without question one of the most outstanding football coaches fourteen years now and unbelievable and then you just don't do it any better he does and people to play for love even people work for me uses one actual football coach in his teens are always co twelve he's he's got a year this year were is not going to play in a championship game the third usually in the gym it we're going to get everything he's got is there anything through the idea either colorful blind either got the apple Cup they're not playing for division that could you catch him at a time like this or is it more something that a France's please hold for better football players they want they want to one another one they won and they wanted to so you know you'll get the best shot of course anti Stephen Montez is got a chance with one touch down to become the all time touchdown pass the leader in its two hundred ninety nine yards to tie still full Lou frown we'd love he has not had to use double play great football is for that with the last four four ball games or so they really need a bigger boat they're going to need a big game but you know what I I hope we can produce that I feel like he's risen to the moment a lot of times issue when needed now there's also been some disappointment as you lay it down there but he loves he loves playing on this field you know that I still remember after the big Nebraska win earlier in the year and the students for us he was in no rush to get off the field you want to enjoy with some of his fellow Sears students here what Toby rises to the occasion and I help with the boss office where we believe the numbers out there was the first five games about thirty four thirty five points a game four hundred and forty five or fifty yards a game though as far the revision fifty points about a hundred yards west when you look at the office what's what happening up there where the affected disco fill these I think the first thing I look at least I mean look at the number in this funny I watch the Baylor Oklahoma game last week there was one lawn illegal procedure called in the game hands between two teams to win out for law and I saw a couple today and the while state game but the procedures movements formations I mean we've heard our selves and in the last four games with and you know if I can just stop helper cells often with without question the we formed the ball will typically wells article as far give the image of the numbers about fifteen to twenty yards of offense the footage played well enough city for what you're talking about this exam I think so yeah I think it's played well enough and I think we've been in the sent to throw the football for whatever reasons and we've had some injuries should all trim down for a couple games online there I don't think we've been able to give him a call as much as probably fans wanted wanted us to and and I I think probably you get the ball to put we are better but I I think between we're we're not where we need to be going through this what you because you're one of the few people actually appreciate their service the specialist as horrible as this might be a gamer you got to the best players in America here to let you know I know what I love if this is a field position game much like the last one was you know the two guys that we remember last week and the last time we played so yeah this could be the same way if if we get into a this is going to be a field position game it'll start walking up behind your right now we're gonna go have a television a real quick here and you're just a moment Sir so I'd like to thank you for joining the user is walking up here right now we're gonna get court on television but you stand right here where I'm ready right now how you doing man I'm doing.

"The pac twelve and let's look at Oregon Merrill crystal ball not only doing a nice job there as far as what the current team but also the recruiting has been the best ever as far as for the dogs ten back on the offense including Justin Herbert the open with Auburn down to Jerry's house look for dell Travis die on the offense these guys they can pick them up put him down have some really solid receivers including two one Johnson coming over yet Addison briefly in jail and read and then on defense they did lose Jaylen jokes but Troy die anchors at linebacking corps talk to me a little bit about Oregon your take on the docks and Auburn because I already played organ plus three yeah I would yeah I take care of the better quarterback in that match up a lot of pressure on on Merial crystal ball mystique your step up to one thing they haven't been able to win on the road in recent years five and thirteen on the world on a neutral field site they were three and three last year but you critical games in the pollution against Washington state they lost that match up and then against G. sincerely and you are in Salt Lake City Herber conclude that ballgame I need to see a better effort at a Justin Herbert well that goal the running back that's one seven only around a hundred forty five rushing yards per game they get you one Johnson back I think this is an old one football team I think did not call for Auburn though I like them we can one because I'm not sold on the quarterback play for the Tigers the case starts fast but I think they October schedule is the is the difference Washington Washington St at USC that will make or break a team's articulate for for two thousand ninety sore you sold one Jacob bees and then taking over Washington for offensive linemen I mean I'm a pretty good running back east in the transfer of course but you lose a ton any Washington loses six other top seven tacklers that's where I'm concerned you lose a guy like Denver curving that at a hundred seventy six tackles I'm concerned I know the games in Seattle but I think Oregon wins a game also we guarantee numbers are starting at twenty seven three last year which nor nor can a year we were against each other in that match up so that was a very close game I agree with your Herbert and the crew you have the experience heading into that all green I think it's gonna be a different offense were Chris Peterson because you he'll be able to open it up something he couldn't do wonder Jake Browning I think you should give them that ability miles o'brien is a solid defense are back for that secondary and keep this in mind that twenty one five against pac twelve opponents over the last three years they recruit just as well as anybody within the pac twelve so as long as the game is in Seattle I think they have a legitimate chance not call for them and that's my cue to win their half of the division and challenge Arizona in the pac twelve championship game hi Trina have minutes so keep talking faster Z. boy G. T. Daniels U. S. C. look the receiving corps was pretty good cars got to come back from the injury now applies got to do his job and in defense of the U. S. C. has to step up your take on southern cal can a challenge Utah and what about Arizona Arizona state real quick UCLA who wins the south as far as your lease is concerned in the pac twelve yeah I think it's Arizona we're Corey okay for USC they need to run the football consist only only average a hundred thirty three rushing yards per game and failed to rush for over a hundred and five of twelve the warnings for nose match up so I think it's going okay eight I like your child struck the schedule five hundred what and percent but I think that that school back in in that half of the division okay as Arizona and call me okay your number two one seven someone I think is very explosive for the Wildcats who wins that holy war opener with Utah laying six to be why you because B. Y. U. they bring back a pretty solid nucleus insane Anderson went down after four games at thirty five tackles I mean like I said to talk he's got to come up big do you are you you know they got a ton back office of Lee and defensively I know they lost a Hodge but other than that pretty much everybody back yes only Zach Wilson shoulders is healthy I like B. Y. U. I think he's the difference maker for that offense we Saddam against western Michigan and they were awesome Heartbreakers in recent years but it's a rivalry game new optimism for B. Y. you're wanting a possibly you're better quarterback and Tyler Oakley I like Jack Wilson to strike the upset now we wore all right and then have to go we'll just hit the big twelve real quick Oklahoma Texas people looking at them Jaylen hers should be the guy that starts but with Brooks and sermon in the backfield that's pretty solid pleasure as well see the lamb comes back out in terror outstanding tight and only couple guys back on the offense of line so there's some problems there as far as taxes Ellinger is back but they lose you know pretty dynamic receiver they do bring back Colin Johnson known duvernay your take on Oklahoma and Texas real quick to wrap things up yeah you know Coleman has yet your former chairman to ninety three to keep an eye out for both their work and I was the I have daylight ninety three which always grow and Brock protein the crew at eight and four I think they can challenge both of those years I think it's more priority eighteen thousand nineteen yeah I agree with you with property and I was state Matt Campbell one of the best coaches in the country and the whole offense of line is back for the cyclones I think of course with the best linebacking corps no doubt was spears Rosen eyes worth that they definitely can challenge inside the big twelve years Joe lease see I'd go for the two following their Joe outstanding stuff is always look to get you once in a while sporadically throughout the season but Jo you've always been somebody that shined on sports X. radio we love ya here in Vegas bro thank you I love talking college football here the best chili see I'd go for the two our number one in the books Johnny gonna take us to break sports X. radio the new one one five FM seven twenty AM KGW N. "And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks. What's up everybody welcome to move the sticks presented by New Era and Buck PAC twelve media day and we we have got a jam packed episode but we need to let the folks know because I'm sure there's some out there thinking? I don't really care about PAC twelve football this is this is a fun episode because while we're talking to some coaches some of the top in the country it's not just about these PAC twelve teams. It's about team building culture all those things things and we're also gonNA talk to two guys who I think have a chance to be top ten picks in the upcoming draft. Yeah absolutely I think what is important. We are really been on offseason quest to kind of learn how to be a championship teams and so what is better than talking to coaches who are trying to establish established their respective cultures in the locker room and then when he talks about the players. It's always about the players so be able to get some insight on some of the top players that we know we're going to talk about on the path to the draft. Yeah we're going to get to those two players in just a little bit but we want to jump right right in here and that's not mess around because got a chance to talk to David Shaw head coach at Stanford who we've known and work with for a while here on the draft coverage Mario Cristobal from Oregon who's really tried to take what he'd learned from Miami University of Miami player Earlier University of Alabama as a coach in installed in this Oregon football program chip Kelly everybody knows chip story and what he's trying to do there at U._c._L._A.. To recreate what he was able to do at Oregon Chris Peterson for our money one of the best coaches regardless of level that we have in today's game and then also herm Edwards who did a masterful job last year when everybody laughed at him getting that job at Arizona state now laughing anymore buck now laugh at anymore and I think all those coaches I think you find a common denominator that will come out in these interviews. Here's here's our conversations with some of the best coaches in college football talking about team building culture building what it takes to win in two thousand nineteen our buck excited to have our good friend Stanford head coach. David Shaw joined the show coach <hes> first of all. It's great to see you. You look like you're in phenomenal shape coming into this season your goal specifically for you. We'll get to your team here in a second but I know you're always improving and looking to get better. What's your to do to better at your job? This year the goal from me coming off your we had so many injuries and battled so much and showed so much fight just to get back and we won nine games with a difficult schedule and missing our best player Bryce love etc the Gopher me personally is to get the most out of this football team find out what it is and try to help us play at the highest level we can from top to bottom from everything that touches the field because I think if we can do that I think we'll probably be as good as anybody in our conference and have a chance to be in that championship game. So how do you do that self evaluation. You know so you have this vision in your head for how you want your team to play but then you look at your team in some point use a don't do this or the well. We really good in debt. When is that point? Come when you make that decision like this is who we are. That's a tough one. That's a tough one and I do. I'm pretty hard on myself as a kind of different levels that I try to look at 'em I giving the coaches enough leeway. Am I giving them enough. Direction M. I given the team enough leeway given the team enough direction M. I.. Empowering our leaders in my training our leaders properly. Am I going back behind and make sure the guys are following the right way so there are a lot of different facets to make sure that <hes> from my position of creating the proper environment to get everybody at their best coaches players and everybody in the building. That's always a challenge so for me to really find out what we are. I don't think a lot of coaches say different things. I don't think we know who we are until we play three football games. I don't know if that's just the N._F._l.. On me like preseason or whatever it is but training camp is one thing and you have so much flux in college football. There's always a percentage of your team that is going to be gone and percentage of guys that were there. That didn't play that are now going to play some guys that did you recruited them that they're gonNA come in and play roles once you play a couple of games and really settle in then. I think you kind of know who you are what you think you're going to be good at for us. It's GonNa be interesting this year because we're bringing back. A quarterback is gonNA best. QUARTERBACKS IN AMERICA MAY HAVE THE BEST TIGHT END IN AMERICA MAY HAVE MISSED CORNER IN AMERICA. The best left tackle in America. Yeah we've got some known quantities may have the best kicker in America. We've got some guys that we know are going to come in and play really well to have an environment those guys to play at their best and be as good as they can because we need those guys to play great and then the other three quarters of the team that we're going to try to figure out. How are we going to get the best combination the offensive line you know who's going to rotate in safety nickel defensive line? I think it's talented have some experienced. Can we bridge that gap between being out there and in being effective right out there playing but now can we make some game changing plays from from that defensive line outside linebackers. That's linebacker positions so we we asked you for kind of a a bird's eye view on your team in what you do to Kinda identify who you war but when it comes to building a culture in your program you've been firmly in Princeton Stanford while your culture is set. What is it about Stanford? What is culture if we had to pin you down on the definition? So you guys know this probably better than anybody. I'm a nerd a bit of a nerd right culture and all coaches talk about culture and I did the nerd thing which I looked up the word and found the definition that fit my purposes and my favorite definition of culture involves knowing that cultures a group of shared beliefs and practices and that's really what it is so what you really learn in my opinion what you really learn in order to be having effective culture. You don't bring in people to change them. You'd be bringing people that fit your culture and believe in what you believe leaving so that's how the cultures maintain doesn't say we'RE GONNA take this guy that is different. WE'RE GONNA fit him into our culture that never ever works at never hasn't it never will because you're asking a leopard a change of spots so you you find people and that's to me. That's the biggest thing recruiting which are narrow focus of recruiting academically football wise also tennis socially like we're GONNA make sure we're bringing guys at believing what we believe. In is now they can come in and fit in what we're doing and they have the best chance to be successful in a culture that they fit we have the best chance to be successful with the guys that believe leaving our culture last question from me and it goes with the culture because we're trying to get to know these kids and see if they do fit going through the draft process you've been through it. You sit in that room for fifteen minutes to try and get a feel for for someone when you go when you're you're on visit with a High School Bukit on a home visit or what have you what are some good questions that you can <hes> that you can get some good answers out of these kids to learn more about them to see if they are a cultural fit so I think that's the that's one of the biggest things about our recruiting process. Is We have fewer guys to recruit so during our process. We get to know them a lot better than maybe other people other people are offering two hundred fifty kids. Three hundred kids were offering forty right so we get to know them during the process and I told her coaches all the time when you go to visit the school you're not just going by the council to pick up the transcript. You're going to talk to counselor told me about this. Kid You know and hopefully the counselor says Oh. This is my favorite guy. When I heard Stanford coming? I knew who they were coming for. This is the guy that's that's what you WanNa hear. When you talk to the coach they want to see you know? This is our best leader. This is our guy. We knew. This was a Stanford Guy Right off the bat. That's what we're looking for so hopefully while we're recruiting this. Could we've gotten this from so many different people now kind of focuses our conversation. We want to know what tell me something difficult that you had to go through. Tell me tell me what you had to fight through because people talk about what's the best the most consistent thing about people that are that are successful resilience its resilience and mentality and some of the guys that have never been through anything difficult kind of curious okay how they're gonNA handle being third third straight right. I don't WanNa pick the guy it's GONNA be third string when he gets there Stanford and transfer. No there's going to be a process for you guys that understand that process and recruiting Andrew Lock Able it was Andrew was great and it was like a thirty year old man when we send it wasn't difficult but it was great to hear other people so recruiting recruit area and there's a big rival talking to his rivals high school high school coach and he says okay. I got to tell you about this. Andrew Luck Guy Okay Gimme Gimme something something he says okay. Here's what happens coach. Our team comes up with a dirty limerick for the nether teams favorite player the best player all right so we're getting ready to play Andrew and I'm waiting and all week. I don't hear it so I grabbed my seniors the second worst lyric coach we we don't want to come up with lyric against this guy. He's not gonNA hear it. He said no because we respect them too much wjr in highschool to to have your your your rivals feel that way and of course Andrew would demolish them and then that night coaches down and he's at dinner and who walks in but Andrew and his family and they've across the restaurant and here's his high school senior walks across the restaurant shakes posing coaches hand it stands there and talks to him and his wife for like fifteen minutes while okay process. We're done here hits over this guy. That is so good coach. I know you've got a lot of stops here on on the circuit but we always enjoy enjoy catching up with you and look forward to be with you in the spring because see guys are joined by Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal coach. It's great to see you again. <hes> what I want to know. Just what you've what you've learned here in the offseason. Oh you always try and grow and get better individually collectively the team. What have you learned well? The best thing I learned is besides going around you know we went a lot of different places so we picked up a couple of things kinetically and whatnot but <hes> the best thing that I've learned in its will WANNA learn was who are team leaders <hes> that was important to find out who the Alpha guys are who are the guys that people gravitate to unlock room and who's going to say something and people are going to listen and change the tone when it has to be who's going to be able to swing the momentum our way when we need a big player or need a change in the attitude and then the whole I saw it on the sidelines so I think that's been really valuable. We've also found out that these freshmen that enrolled early that we have guys who are going to contribute I mean we signed twenty seven guys and I expect eighteen play. How's that defensive end by the way from down here? I know you coach do coach against him. Folks the Oaks Kid Oh special needs special and he just squatted. I think four hundred fifty five hundred pounds as well so his body has developed a ton since January but the best part about him is not the five star rating. It's it's more the five star attitude and approach the work this guy he just gets it. He's made the right stuff. He's got the right D._N._A.. He is he's an all out guy and.

"I mean it depends on how big the conversation is if you're having a broad conversation about who are the best coaches in college football right now. I would I would include him. I, I know I know what he what he's done in a nobody hasn't done. But I think the way his program is ascending. Are you basing it on what has already happened or are you projecting? An and if you're drafting. Coach would he be under consideration? And the answer from my purchase. Yes. I think he's one of the best coaches in the country. Well, I, I would agree they wanted the best coaches in the country. But I can grow. I can't put him in, in the category. While I mean you have you have eight national championships in the other boat. So you're, you're not you're going to have to. I mean you can't find that anywhere right now. Yeah. If I if I asked you, okay, I'm gonna Nick Sabin is the best coach in the country. And Daboh Sweeney's, the second best who are your who is three four and five. Well, I thought so. Say smart stirred reckon. Well, it's not all. I mean, here's, let's have a conversation about this who, who would be in the next group. Well, I would put I'm gonna I'm gonna throw a five or six names out there JIMBO, JIMBO Fisher is one of the names, I'm going to throw in that. The national championship. He's been in the playoffs twice who else would be in that group. You got. Well, you. Okay. No, no. You says smells on. I would consider Chris Peterson among the better coaches, I would put Lincoln Riley in that conversation as Washington yet, I. I. Harpole is not there. Carbos is not there. No, no. And I don't think guy, same states. Not there either. He's not in my book. No to who, who else is there, I guess the question, Dan Mullen hasn't won a championship. You can't really put him in there. You can put him in the conversation. But to me Kirby. Smart has played for a national championship. He's one in SEC title. He was an assistant for four or five other national championships. And I think he's in the next rung. I don't think there really is anyone after Sabin and Davos Sweeney right now other than maybe JIMBO Fisher. I think you just said he's in the next run. I, I will say this about about Kirby. He's the best recruiter is although I don't think there's any doubt about that. He, he, he is relentless and, you know, I was talking to somebody today about this Kirby smart has only been there a couple years think about the decision. The Georgia had to make Greg mcgarity the director of had Mark Rick has head coach Mark richt was good. Good football coach. I mean, he at one time was considered among the elite coaches in the in the SEC and Kirby was talking to South Carolina. I don't know how close it came, but I think it came pretty close. And all of a sudden, Greg, Greg realized that he was about to lose not only one of the best available coaches in the country, but. Georgia graduate and he made a tough call. He he replaced Mark with Kirby smart. And look at this program now it was good. Yeah. Under Mark Rick, now it's border bordering on great. Yeah. Yep. And we also leave that one coach Paul. And that's Lincoln route. Yeah. No. I mentioned him because you not. Yeah. You can't ignore it Lincoln Riley. I mean, I think right now, if you're after after the, the big, too, you have Lincoln Riley, JIMBO Kirby Peterson who else who who am. I missing. I mean, Brian Kip Brian Kelly has been in the playoff a couple of times he's played for national championship. He's been in the playoff. I mean I mean I mean he's he I think you have to consider him. I mean, depending on what year I mean two years ago, he was about to get fired. Now. He's back in being one of the elite coaches, but it is a really good coach. And remember, this is this was created because urban Meyer left urban Meyer had had three national championships. Yeah. Well, thank you very much for the call..

"And I tell you after those top two I had some pretty serious problems with first of all dude you put Chris Peterson number three at washed not I'm gonna freely. Now, we say this every year, we know nothing about the Pac twelve when it comes to pack twelve you might as well be asking me about the Royal family. I know nothing about it. I couldn't tell you. I focus on the pack twelve as little as humanly is allowed because the games are late at night. Usually somehow Bill Walton is involved often. I have to go to channels that didn't know we're on my TV to get there. So I know nothing about it. But would you put Chris Peterson bird? Last time. I watched a Washington football game. A believe Warren Moon was the quarterback Elian Kauffman was the running back Warren Moon. I think that's the last game. I saw even though it's pro before I was born. I think it was. But that was before the Chris Peterson area. I'm sure he's done fine. I don't know that I would have had third thirties. High to me they're very case for him is look he started essentially, the rise of the Boise state program. Right. Yep. He then when they let when he left you don't hear as much about Boise state anymore. He goes to Washington they've made the the playoff, right? I mean, I think there's a case for it. I would not have done it. Who would your number three have been? I'm going to go with my SEC bias seared and go Kirby smart me too. I mean what he's done with Georgia. The last couple of years had Alabama beat. I mean, Kirby smart, I've said this before I feel like smart is if you were going to draw what a southern SEC coach would look like you would draw him. He still has the hair from when he was in college. Still wearing his fraternity haircut with the with the visor. But he has in two years may Georgia like if you were picking a program that you would want to be a fan of for the next fifteen years. Wouldn't you pick Georgia? Yeah. I mean, George has always been very good. They took a little bit of a dip there before Kirby's Martin. And he came in right there and made them elite had them in the playoff. I mean, they're fans have sort of inferiority complex that is unnecessary. I mean, I had quite a rivalry with dog nation, which is a website that has some thin skinned writers. I think it's fair to say, but as far as the program, it's sort of like with the MBA what team would you want to be a fan of for the next ten years. I think it would be Milwaukee. Right because you're going to have Jaanus, and you're going to be good for ten years, Kirby, smarts Jaanus. I mean at very very similar, well athletically, their bills are a little bit different. But I think. He is. He's next. Right. I don't agree. And we here in Kentucky. We get to watch UK get their teeth kicked in by George every year. So I feel like we know more about this than anyone really got them playing. Well, so if you were if you were carved smart, wouldn't you be offended about the fact that not only is Chris Peterson head of you Lincoln Riley is a head of you and most agreed Isley, JIMBO Fisher. Okay. I can't sit for JIMBO Fisher being head of him. The others are another conferences. There's are used to be made JIMBO in one year. Eight him. No. I mean. What has JIMBO Fisher done. Besides have a really really good set of hair plugs. What has he done to be a head of car race? Mar Novi nothing at all it's another two if you wanna take them. All right. You can do that. I'll live with it. There's no way jimbo's ahead of Kirby on anyone's list. I look I look at last year. We follow Kentucky Kentucky played at Texas. Am outplayed them should have won and lost in overtime, Kentucky home to Georgia. And it never felt like it was it always felt like they were substantially better. Disfigure have them ready to be good for years to come. You just said you would wanna be fan of Georgia for years to come. And what carves doing are you jumping on am bandwagon because jimbo's there now I'm not convinced..

"This is weekend edition from NPR news. I'm Lou Garcia Navarro. Good morning democratic presidential hopefuls are in heartland America this weekend making their case to rural voters in the small town of storm lake Iowa. It's part of a broader push by Democrats to make inroads in traditionally Republican strongholds ahead of the twenty twenty election. NPR's Don gonyea was there. This is northwest Iowa deep red Republican country. But yesterday, the stage was set for a group of Democrats for something billed as the heartland forum. There is an increasingly crowded field of Democrats in the race for president four of those officially running accepted the invite to attend. It was not a debate. The candidates took turns onstage taking questions from a trio of journalists and from the audience. There was Senator Elizabeth Warren Senator Amy klobuchar. Former cabinet secretary and San Antonio mayor Julia on Castro and former congressman, John Delaney. Warren was first onstage in an opening statement. She tackled small-farm economics and the impact of big corporate farming and industry mergers. Perations that are making bigger and bigger profits for themselves for their executives for their investors. And they're putting the squeeze on family farms on small farms when Amy klobuchar who's from neighbouring, Minnesota took the stage. She said antitrust laws need to be rewritten to protect small farms. She talked about President Trump's trade policies tariffs imposed against China and the retaliatory tariffs by the Chinese on US farm commodities. We've had a situation the weather being bad. We've had some of the lowest prophets were agriculture at least in my state since one thousand nine hundred eighty s and I know that I was experiencing this too. And while I'm glad that the administration decided to it that twelve billion set aside to make up or these trade wars that's not the same as actually selling things right now to Julio Castro. He was asked about balancing environmental concern. With farming. He said it's about the choices the government makes in the tax code and on where to invest family farms can thrive, and you can have clean air and clean water. No matter where you live including in rural America. On immigration Castro spoke of his grandmother coming to the US from Mexico. The fourth candidate to speak was John Delaney of Maryland. He's still little known though, he's been actively campaigning for almost two years. Already. Delaney spoke of his proposal labeled the heartland fair deal in it. He to calls for much greater investment in rural areas capital has left this region that doesn't mean people don't invest here they do. But the owners at capital are often not located here anymore. "That's short favorite. Yeah. No. That shows the importance of getting a good number, obviously. Sometimes you can't predict which way the betting market will go but that game closed four and a half five around. So that was a probably a treacherous number for some bookmakers. Luckily, most of our money was at minus five miners. I mean, minus five six so we were very fortunate that was Notre Dame Clemson game house. Take aim were two enormous winters for the books as well as Texas knocking George Al and straight up and going under. So those were by far the three biggest winners of the bowl season for William Hill. Nick, I'm curious to get your opinion on Chris Petersen. I I've always been extremely high on this guy, you know, outside of Sabin urban Meyer and Harbaugh Dabo Sweeney. All the big names that you hear I thought Peterson is really just about half a notch under a if not right there with these guys. But I I was a little bit disappointed with. Him in that Rose Bowl. I don't think that was his best night at work and not giving miles Gaskin thirty five or forty touches. This is the best guy on your team. And for this guy. Only have seven carries in the first half. I thought was ridiculous and Kenny talked about the you know, the punt late in the fourth quarter. It just didn't look like the night where he was firing on all cylinders Chris Peterson. Yeah. You know? I was I I thought Washington was one of the mortars pointing teams this year, even though they made it to the Rose Bowl. I just coming back, and I thought brownie never progressed. Even better as a sophomore senior. So yeah, I would say he might add an off game. I still think he's a pretty good coach. But it happens. Gary Patterson or TCU real high on did the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life. So I don't know. I sometimes I guess it's easier for us to be sitting here in our lounge chair, and we watch ten thousand games all the scenarios sometimes the coaches freeze on the sidelines. No doubt about it. Now as far as some of the other bowl games whether it was Saturday or gains from Monday or Tuesday. I would think there were several that just caught your attention. Like some of the some of the stats when you look in other words, if I told you Iowa was going to have minus sixteen yards rushing. How the heck did they scored twenty seven points and win against Mississippi State? That's the one thing. Mississippi State one of the best defense in the country. I mean, I would say, you know, Alabama Clemson. And then I put Mississippi State right there. I mean that defense is just lead lead by sweat and company. I mean, they just suffocate you and they again, minus sixteen yards rushing for and some a little bit of that was a couple of sacks on Stanley. But. But you know, couple big plays Freia one win a backup tight ends not even covered and they get along seventy five yard touchdown. I mean other than that. I don't know how Mississippi State could actually lose that game. But they did and hats off to Fahrenson. I will finding a way to win that one. That was one of the more entertaining games that total open forty four and a sharks bet the living hell out of the down to thirty nine. So they were expecting a defensive battle. And if they played a hundred times, I bet it would go under seventy five times every big play. When I was way Iowa Mississippi State out of touch down the kid dropping the zone popped up in the air. And I ran a back. You talked about the one play several broken plays. So yeah, there's no question Iowa got the majority of the brakes in that game. And that was a really another good game for the house Iowa industry. Nick is the bowl season completely different. Just an entirely new math problem. It's you will from setting the number and also handicapping the regular season. I mean, it just seems like some of the results we see Ken talks about the game going over with Iowa. And I was scoring twenty seven points on one of the top defenses in the country. You know, Texas beating Georgia outright northwestern what they did in the second half. Just a lot of weird results when you get to the postseason atypical at you will from what you might see more normalcy. If you will in the regular season is it totally different from handicapping and bookmaking just a new season. And a different math problem if you will. The total crapshoot. You just never know. What you're you got so many different factors. You got the three weeks off? You got all the, you know, some some teams focused some are coaching changes coordinator changes trying out new players. It's not a the games meaningless. So sometimes they just throw caution to the wind. They get on a roll early. And they just keeps going and sometimes they mail it in early, and there's people sitting out for NFL reasons and suspensions, and I mean, and then there's always a ton of injuries because they're not in the, you know, the the layup. I mean, it it is a complete crap shoot. I mean, it really is. I mean looking back on it. You can say, oh, yeah. That looked obvious that looked obvious. Obviously the army on was the one that stood out. I mean army went into Oklahoma and had the ball forty two minutes in Norman and Houston was going through a bunch of changes. And you just knew that he was gonna pound did. But I mean, yeah, it's a total crapshoot. It really is. It's never been more crap shoot. Nick as far as an.

"Why you go back to the third down and four play where they could have run the ball, or or at least get made it to where you weren't going to be a fourth and impossible. But instead they opt to drop it back. They dump it to their running back to the left hand side. They make a great defensive play. And then you're looking at fourth down. You lose that opportunity to maybe go for it. If you so choose so questionable play calling their third down and walk is just run the ball Weber up the middle breaks, a tackle at the line of scrimmage, darts left. I'm Dave you're probably figuring. If you are Chris Peterson that going into it. We're going to go all in push our chips to the table on our defense, and we're gonna see your we're going to get you out on three. Now the ball right back. They're not gonna kick a field goal. The Gulf war fourth-down not risk getting blocked. Plaques pass Haskins rolling, right? Throws farsight incomplete. The clock stopped with three oh to to go. "For the buckeyes to down the football Washington down eleven we'll see if the huskies just run the ball and get the halftime. But as you sick to timeouts left for Ohio State. So Chris Peterson has to assume that if he gets stuff trying to run the ball on first down that urban Meyer will call a time out, Dan, I'm fine throwing it, but it has to be a very high percentage completion, maybe a screen or throw behind the line of scrimmage one that you're going to complete ninety nine point nine percent of the time. So I'd be very conservative. If I'm Washington, I don't wanna give Ojo state the opportunity to put their offense back on the field with really good field position. Frowning and shotgun. First and ten from the eight. Three receivers to the left brownie takes the staff drops the throw. It's a short pass to the near side caught at the ten by Chellany steps out of bounds at the thirteen yard line on the near sideline chased out by Sean. Wade two five yard gain stops the clock with a minute. Sixteen to go in Greg. That's exactly what you're talking about. Nice and easy high percentage throw they got the little rub off the slant. Route throwing the ball out of the flat stopped the clock. Everything you want in this type of situation, but they're gonna have to go down feel that they're serious about driving. And one thing that we've seen from Chris Peterson is that his team all aside from last year's performance in the fiesta bowl. His teams have traditionally played pretty well in bowl games. He does a great job of getting them prepared keeping guys fresh. Now, they already significant talent disadvantage when being compared to Ohio State. But if you look at Chris Peterson his track record in pulling off games like this. As an underdog were no one's giving them a chance. He's done it as well. As anybody over the last decade and change. Yeah. Greg keep an eye on the tricks. They always got some tricks up their sleeve, especially.
