And then at 45 is when enrolled in a G E d program. She came to StoryCorps with her teacher, Chris Myers, to talk about what is class meant to her. After the war. My dad was in prison. My mom had to take care of five of us, and I had to go out to work when I was like in sixth or seventh grade. Then when I get to a 10 grade, I just dropped out. You never gave any hint that she would have that kind of childhood. Yes, There's a lot of things that I have about my childhood. I just want to ask you one question. You know, sometime in the classroom, I know that we get on your nerves. Okay, So you wanted to know. Do you guys get on my nerves? Sometimes? Yes. You know, I'm gonna choose my words wisely. Because first and foremost, this is honest to God Truth. So many people work and they don't even like what they do. And they'll tell you Okay, we'll go get that paycheck, right. But if the only time you happy is when you get paid, that's a waste of a life. What a lot of people don't know about instructing when you do it, right. You're allowing somebody to go into you. And take energy away from you. And you have to do that. So I end up very drained sometimes, but at the end of the day, whatever it is that my learner's take out, they put back in me. You go out of your ways to do for us. Yeah, and I really appreciate that. You know, I had a student. Tell me they saw you and you were crying when you pass the last test. Um every bit of work that we've ever done to get you to this point it was worth it just to know that you were crying Tears of joy. It helped you do something that you're so happy about? You had tears. Because with you it wasn't easy mission, like, think about after you took your first test. The first score was like a two right and I know that could be extremely discouraging. I have a lot of things that I don't see any more after that. But then to see you back the next day. I'm like, okay, we're fighting. And when I see a fighter, I get excited. Okay, bring it. CORRECT cause they national broadcast takeover sues the playoffs hit but radio Calls all the way through the end, and only by the very kind nature of Pat Hughes. Did he get to sit in on the flagship? When you and I start talking, we're just gonna talk through all the pitches. I remember going to game long time ago. I really loved it. There's a home run by costly Otto's gonna get foreign up. Here's your driving a deep left field by constant Janos. It will be a home run. That's it. That's the whole thing when you and I start talking You know, I got action to call. I got time for your long form stories. I'll get out of the way. There's no shot. You get no shot shot. There's no shot. You're getting out of the way. Danny should be. Let me be his analysts. Who do you think I mean, for the sake of entertainment absolutely shot, But I agree with Hoody. I mean, there's no shot. Hey, when they when they do those like, Hey, man, you got a brother in the book closed that window. I'm not that I'm not that guy That's gonna do it. I'm not Harry. That's that's a great story. So the windows at Wrigley are removable out all the booth? Yeah. And Harry would come in and the first Syriza's first game. The new crew did not know that it was removed the windows Cold out. It's freezing. Harry came in and said, Hey, I don't work with windows. He wants the crowd noise. He don't care if it's cold, So they said, All right, we'll get him out for tomorrow. Here. It's too late. It takes it's a process. He does the first game. He comes in the next day, and the windows are still in. It's a true story. Way back in his career. He was telling us. He took a folding chair and broke the window out. That's it. Maniac May What is Harry? Brother the window out? I don't know. What's up? Uh huh. Well, this strikes his bangs. I mean, I mean, come on now. Remember Josh Mora on TV? I do so Josh Mora is the intern early in his career at WGN TV. Harry comes in and you know they had the like the screen. They would pull down behind him. So the sun wouldn't it would be that would be have a glare like glare proof. They put a new one in, but they hadn't screwed it in yet. They just set it on top. It said. Do not use this one. We're just going to deal with the light in the back. The carpenters will be in after the game, and they'll attach it well, Josh forgets. No, no, he pulls it down and it comes flying down it wax Harry on the head and down goes Harry. They're trying to kill me in here. True story, Gary, so don't know. "My friend Chris Myers will be there hi I am Chris joins us now Chris awesome to have you hope things go man everything okay yeah I know it's good to get to sock you get that would you like the the the forty niner games I got the call the two of you know the play by play from the food during the year and and excited that that I'll be on the forty Niners sidelines Sunday afternoon Erin Andrews has the Packers sidelined and and of course the trophy will be presented for the team going to the Superbowl representing the NFC champion so yeah I'm I'm I'd be excited that the game is here in California one I'm glad you'll be on the Niners sideline because their dentures and Jimmy Garoppolo have had enough of an exchange already this year right what what do you have for Jimmy if if if he wins I don't you know it's all up to it was about what he says not what I so hopefully that that's true of talk to you afterwards so he he can enjoy the ball but you know he really is of that I'm sure you're more familiar over the tie but even in production meetings very very comical just like in the game but he throws a picky comes right back I was very comfortable with his coach it is that is surrounding so yeah he's follow it you know he's actually he's on the phone with the cameras are rolling and he's talked before about you know his brother's our biggest how yeah that that that that service like this just things that you would talk to a regular guy about but he's had a heck of your I I've really been oppressed mark with it earlier in the year we thought this was a running team and how we develop and receiver exchanges injuries and and he's really come up in big moments as forty that Frances scene and and you'll need to know about you know you need to do to get you know I mean he's gonna make some mistakes like all quarterbacks do but he's going against the special that aired Rogers so it'll be and I throw that first came out from from from earlier in the year but for his sake anyway I hope he gets to say feels great baby yes I do right so do do you totally throw that that previous meeting out yeah I do I do and I I've you know I've talked to you know whether it's Troy Aikman Daryl Johnston analysts who I've been with and they played on Superbowl cowboy jeans that that had to be the same team or face of the also the eagles twice during the year and then in the playoffs and and then there is maybe something to that when you're in the division but when you're not you know it's like Seattle I mean if if they face the foreigners and take on the Seahawks for a third time maybe there's a little more in that yeah I I look at how impressive but you watch that game the forty Niners played well I think you're I think forty as or better team right now than they were then and I think things fell their way they are in that game but I don't know that the the it would be so one sided if a few things didn't happen and I think the Packers actually have approved since since that gave me brother defenses what I've really noticed maybe Aaron Jones is wearing down a little as a running back but that's why I I and I think Kyle shares smart this they don't you know don't be stupid and think about your take the positives from from that game and then that's why I think the forty Niners ever being at home where are the favorite favorite in this game but I Aaron Rodgers will come in with an attitude of the chip in and because I you know it alls favors the Packer attitude all use that phrase that they lost that game we were so embarrassed in prime time but I think the forty Niners will will be up to the challenge in terms of removing that ad and playing this game of isolating it by itself because the stakes are entirely different and I and I think the teams actually has a set of balls got better yes I love that you've been around the forty Niners at least three or four times this year and I I wonder what what do you see as the evolution of this team when you first saw them toward the beginning of the year verses now what what have you noticed and how different are there yeah good question I'll be absolutely the improvement of Jimmy garage below in a number of ways his his relationship an understanding of what his coach Kyle Shanahan once I find it interesting that he calls him Kyle he doesn't call and coach when he was in the when Louis called Bella check but I think it I think it says something about the two of them so I have seen that I I watch this year the other parts you what I I watch this you play for a lot of key injuries every team deals with injuries but a game without kettle again without Sherman a you know what a game losing his starting center again without a row starting running back into the receiver situation was hurt before training camp in the start of the year so they really have adapted guys in the secondary so they're healthier in most of those places now having deport back and and so I I I think I think guys that got to play with the the starters were out of the regulars that will benefit them throughout this and the other thing I noticed right away and I had an early game with blood and it was a Washington and nine the big sloppy game they play great but they won the game a another character heard if you remember I think that cost a lot but I think they they sound and you say this about all the good teams that they found different ways to win and they've shown that if they need to pound the ball and run which we know is kind of there or take them that's hello do it but if you take that away they are capable of properly can Erin out for three hundred forty yards and and and touchdowns if you and if you pick up the second there you know if you if you somehow keep that pass rusher getting to you then bill bill come from different angles this the Robert Celebi fence and then the second or the blitz you they'll they'll find different ways to put pressure so I I had it in their special teams of that have held up so I I think that's what you say about a good team and this means are very complete he Mike I think a lot of people still think well the weakness is go out below your name really has really done it is really shown in the Minnesota game I don't think people are you know you have the bad pick but I don't think they're giving him enough of of that quarter back credited and that's okay until you win a championship or you know division is done that or or going to a Superbowl them but you'll get the accolades Chris Myers with us on these boards later Chris maybe I'm too close because I'm here in San Francisco but with just the stories around this team I'm a and M. you know the look of a Jimmy Garoppolo the evolution you're talking about it's sort of feels like their time and what I'm wondering because you do this on a year in and year out basis in your around teams in the playoffs do they all feel like that or do you do you get a sense around the team somewhere along the line in the playoffs sometimes we are like you know what they've they've got that lock yeah I know you you do feel you get close to a to a team this is you are we we get a court coverage well I think all teams feel like it's it's their time until the they get smacked around any Baltimore thought it was it was their time until Tennessee took care of them now some teams Seattle I I think they believe that they fought hard but I I never got the sense that they thought this was their time this year simply because the injuries decimated them to to such an extreme that great a luger in your top three running backs when they lost them and then have other key players go out of it was really was really the Russell Wilson show all by himself kind of thing so so easy yet melodic teens feel that but that it it to me it's more a mark about the the match up in the post season the opponent you know Tennessee matches up well in certain areas against the team that they beat them they get big performances they match up well actually of the historically against this Kansas city team although I think my home's can can be the difference so in this game I do think the forty Niners match up well with Green Bay in in whatever Green Bay wants to do it and I I think that it whether it's their time or not they have to play that way they think that's what that's what most head coaches would tell you even if the players believe that but but I do think taking from that Seattle sidelined being at that Packer game last week and I was surprised the Seahawks just didn't do more detective on the items out of the game and I think that's something the forty Niners will be much more on top of maybe it'll take him out of the gate but he doesn't destroy you because he really is the one he guy other than Aaron Jones for Aaron Rodgers there's other receivers there's tight ends there's other backs but that's the guy that you keep him out of it than that it frustrates Rogers other than just getting terrorized which I know the forty Niners yet the last time no I better protection packages this degree day but I I still think if you can't get them you take at the Monterey way and that's a plus for the forty Niners so so that it winds up being at their time but even in the Superbowl if it is a forty niner Casey Superbowl I mean I think that's kind of a toss up give it a good she said and agreed to be saying Hey it's our time but that's what makes the game great you look at that game plan the forty Niners had against Minnesota last week and it is the classic type of a game plan that that leaves fans asking questions about Jimmy Garoppolo because in the second half they did almost exclusively him the ball loft on paper that might be the right thing to do again this week what do you think is it another run had a game plan for the forty Niners well as Kyle show it has told us what give were if were real for running the ball well than ERA for converting third downs than I am gonna run going to pound away at it and I like it about this team that it can be third at eight and you can still run and and not just you know sure the public get the first down of it all three of those back you're very capable of that I I you know it was a point when rain most it was the guy that Coleman came up big of course map reader early so I think that'll keep the team guessing that's a good point though about and I'd have to I'd have to see the first half of the game to say Hey you know we did did you keep running the ball I I don't think I'll settle plates so safe and have to protect your Nicaragua but he's not going to go crazy it'll depend on where you'll wear your.

"We used to in high school, and I'm sorry eighth grade. Right. His lines down and try to beat them with name baseball players, and we fail. But we thought it was cool, but he created something ESPN management. They tried to shut it down. And then they've got the reaction the feedback from athletes and saying, what are you doing? You know, it's must see TV and Chris was must see TV when in the, you know, the beginning stages of ESPN without him. And Bob Lee and Tom MEES, who created sort of, you can be serious. You can have fun, then, you know, they probably don't accept Overman and myself. And then Stuart Scott after that. And everybody else who came in as pretenders. Yeah. I've never asked you this. I do remember the day you were told that you were going to be working with over men, and the reason why was it coincidence? Or was it a plan? It was planned, but they brought me in. You were he were there. I, I was there first and they brought me in. They said, you know sit down. And I thought, oh, what do I do? I said, hey, we're going to bring in Keith Olbermann. I said, okay, go. No. No. He's going to work with you. I go, yeah. Okay. And then they were they were like are you fine with that and go, yeah. Yeah, because I had replaced Keith. I knew him at CNN. I took his job in New York as the New York reporter at CNN and I had, you know, we'd passed, you know, each other and we knew of each other, and I knew what he was doing in Los Angeles. I said, yeah. Bring him in. That'd be great. So the, the meeting was probably they thought they granted to build in thirty minutes to convince me to do this, or something, or if I was going to say, why didn't wanna do it, it lasted probably seven minutes? I'm like, we, they're like, yeah. I walked out. Why is that? What, what was it? Did he have a reputation yet or something? Well, because you're bringing somebody in from the outside who was different than anybody. We had inside. And I think because I'd been paired with Bob Lee. And Bob was different than Keith. And I think they're bringing in key, there, other people in the building thought that they deserve to be there on the eleven o'clock sportscenter I think they just wanted to make sure I was on board with Keith before they made that decision because if I wasn't than they were gonna probably look at okay, we bring somebody else in, but the first show like we never discussed anything we were going to do on the show ever. Even that first week like where you guys I because I, I know how it works up there. But did you guys do a practice show together, or just got together and wrote the show that night and happened to be the first one that was in? We never gave anything. I never knew what he was writing about. I wanted to react like the audience did. But we were given an opportunity they did try to take it away from us. And then it was too late, and then they realized because their whole logic was, and we re told this point blank, we don't want to have another Burman. They didn't want to have somebody who could be popular that they couldn't control. They, you know, short sighted, they didn't look at. Hey, we might get ratings people might watch people might tune in and it took them a long time to realize that, that you, you have talent in the building. Let them have fun and let them be talent, a lot of talent left, you know, rich Eisen, left, Craig Kilborn left. I did. You know, Keith eventually left Chris Myers. You know there are a lot of guys who left that had. They just said. No. We have an unbelievable talent pool. Let's keep everybody in your mic Tariq. Oh, used to do sports. In a Chris Fowler used to do sports center. It was a it was really really, really competitive. And the first show I ever did. Chris Berman stayed..

Okay. I'm like in third place. I a little a little over halfway through and. All of a sudden my guy Chris Myers. He's like, I don't wanna play more. He just stops played stops in the middle of the season middle seat. And he just like he hasn't switched his lineup like four weeks, not the dig move. And so it's like, it's whatever. So I hit him. I'm like. Let me get Jay. The U N easily bet it's called collusion area. No question. So I he's he's like all right? But so we trade. I try to make some bumps receiver and he gave me over. The commissioner. Antoine. Cobb will Caldwell. All of a sudden, he says, oh, we can't let that trade through. I said why not he said because it's not fair as it has an affair. He's not using them. I am that's fair. The classic fantasy argument is bullshit. Right. So but before he finagled. Another gun in cases, stuttered he finagled him because he needed a running back. So he gave him like Carlos Anton car. We'll gave him Carlos Hyde noticed respect the Carlos for defined digs go. That's not fair. Right. Right. I didn't care. I saw. I saw the trailer. Like, that's crazy. You got juice. But when much I went to all of a sudden, he says, well, we'll put it to vote. I'm like, why is my trade getting put to vote, and it wasn't just that trade. It was it was another show traded him. Sees you Commissioner what percent I had. I had been Rosberg on my bench had to shine washing and been Rothlisberger bench. One of my guys needed a quarterback can have a quarterback. So I traded him. And I and Lamar Miller had just went off of that ninety some yard run. Yeah. Yeah. So I was like I needed a number a flex or a number two guy. Give me Lamar Miller and been rather burger we traded. He comes back and go we can't trade. That's not fair. What the fuck are you talking about shit? Yeah. He's like it's it gets the league's imbalanced. What the fuck is you talking about like, how are your how your trades fair trade fair either star from the jump and say, we got to put Detroit's to vote or know house pets dog nightmare every left. I was got it, man. And it was a two hundred so everybody put in two hundred. Well, so it was a nice little pot. Brought and I was like I just left. Kit's my I'm not going to go back. Fair enough. I Mike as a few football question. I I really vented right? We've all been to hate you. Hartman. Been there. Nothing worse than shitty league Commissioner. Antoine. Fuck you, Dan. If you questions about football, and we've got a million of stock you about but. The league is different now than than really when you were when you've only been out for what two three years, but when you were really in in the peak, a you're you're you're run, you're a you're three down guy. You're the running back and now all these teams have two or three guys. And my question is I'm a professional fighter. I don't know if you know this I have one professional fight. I'm retired. "Follows me for some reason on Twitter. I always thought Chris Myers was pretty cool. But he he had a face. He was like, oh we did. He say what did he say? Like normally the reporter. We'll see live TV or now he didn't even get a chance to because he said it and then he walked off. He was interviewing the Rams starting quarterback, and he had the Mike towards him. And then he sees the other player and keep to leave walking up, and he's like shouting stuff saying something about snatching souls because I guess one of the Cowboys players and said that that's what what's going to happen. And then he's like nobody's gonna you know, Dabo bland Chris Myers had shifted the microphone towards a keeps Aleve. You know, he was going to say something he's gonna join in. Yeah. Right. Right. And so he says that and then you just see Chris Marsh kind of like slowly move the mic away. Oh, man. Yeah. And the cameras. I don't know anything from anything when the NFL. I mean, keep till he is somebody that has plagued long enough that I watched him play for years ago. Whatever he's been the lead probably ten years by now, he would know what the camera and the microphone mean. Yeah. He just doesn't care. Clearly, that's horrible. I I I just hate when people do that because they know. Now is there? No delay an NFL football. At least have a five second delay. I guess not least not at that moment. So I understand that Nancy Pelosi is wall was breached by conservative activist and to illegal. I'm waiting to see what happens conservative activists that you've heard on this program. Many times Laura Luma Carey story. Allure allure. Are we going to fill look? Okay. We'll do that in a minute. What else you got? Yeah. I think you know, the New York Times called Trump Russian agent. I wonder I'm wondering if we can extend the same logic to Hillary UNC sold uranium one to Putin. Our Unabomber delivered two billion dollars earnings. How come we Don bothering must getting them? That's I mean, I know the answer to that the bigger issue for me is that these issues do not seem to ever stick to the liberals in that. They don't seem to be paying as much of a political price as Trump are other conservatives now just go figure mis- mis- Cortez. Okay. Your caucus Twitter following is second only to Trump. And if that's true, it doesn't speak well of how informed American citizens are. That's the sad part for me that the Trump in his first two years has done more positive things. In terms of the roaring economy. Presented forum tax cuts immigration, cutting regulation. Not enough people seem to be paying attention to that. And last point I want to make people like Elizabeth Warren court case Bernie Sanders. Achy Pelosi Chuck. No more hell all benefited immensely from our free enterprise system. And yet keeps fueling their priest up garbage. And they no it doesn't work, and they know it's a lie. People seem to be buying into it. You know, I hope there's enough people like you need to tip the balance towards sanity and how we can preserve the system. We'll keep on. We'll keep on trying. I appreciate you. Happy new year. Yeah. We'll keep on tryin. That's the goal is to push sanity versus insanity. Logic versus illogic knowledge versus lack of when you see a Cossio Cortes. I think she's funny. That's how ignorant she comes off as there are people out there who think that she's telling the truth or think that she's right? There's a quote that is attributed to her. And I don't know if it's true. So I'm going to say it before I say it on the air that I'm not sure if it's true, but it's something to the effect of I would rather be morally correct than factually, right? So I mean, if it's true, I mean, somebody said it, but they're they're saying that a Qazi of Cortez. First of all, it's almost too intelligent for her to say. But if she did say, it what it means is how I feel and what my moral value system is is way more important than how the economy really works. Then how the unemployment rate really works. Then how paying for free everything really works that doesn't matter my morals, and my values are more important than that, which doesn't make sense because I have a moral value system too. But it's based on right versus wrong as described by our Lord. So I'm not I'm not sure how you can say. I'm morally, right? But I'm factually wrong that that to me would be very odd. It's edited eight nine four one pags joepags dot com. What do you have Bloomberg from Newsweek, right wing activists, Laura?
