Patriots sign QB Cam Newton to replace Tom Brady

"Cam noon has found a new home with none other than the New England patriots. While, this was a place that many people had suggested and thought about after his I think it was yeah. You least obviously after release. There was no. We figured if it was going to happen, it would have happened already, but I guess the pages take time. Do they do diligence? Make sure in fact that he was healthy 'cause he looks I mean some the work. Suppose he looks healthy, but you don't really now When Negga said there was no rush. It was like all right. He's a free agent. There's someone else assign. They can but if not, then we'll just be able to wait it out and I guess after once you saw how the dominoes kind of played out and says he didn't go to. The grisly inaugurnat the grizzlies while. That the chargers, the ninety plan the same town, so like that weird was say with with the chargers since he didn't sign there. was like honestly, where else was he? Never said that he wouldn't be better than some of the starting quarterbacks that are currently with their teams, but is when you look around and see. At look at the potential starting spot. That would be available this season. Every really want that many out there after again after his release, Efi begin the preseason beginning all season. MIROSLAVA different but. Time he got released. It was like there was only so many places he could go in. New England was one of them, though is one of those things where it was like you were just. Confused just because if you thought that he was gonNA, they were GonNa do it. You thought they would have done it already. But again took their time and he's still got the deal done. If. That was the guy that they wanted so. Cam noon again as I said reached a one year incentive, laden deal with new pages lead sources told ESPN ESPN Chris Mortensen Adam Schefter. Be Mixed with Jarret Stidham Brian Hoyer. To Rabih the I. Don't think necessarily be the heir-apparent only one year. So who knows you can be their past the season? But. Potentially these bridge the gap to the air pair. Of Tom Brady with with new, England.

Cam Gets Signed

"Well there was big news coming last night. Courtesy of our Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen former MVP cam. Newton is a free agent. No more instead Newton is heading to new. England to join forces with bill, Belichick and follow in the footsteps of another MVP Tom Brady. And Cam Newton's cryptic fashion. He had this to say the instagram. I'm excited because I know what right now all praise to God dropping contact tomorrow. I hope you're ready Hashtag. Let's go pat. And so now we know, and we'll start with Adam Schefter, and our health hall of Famer. Steve Young One one. Just tell us how we got here. How did this deal get done? Listen I think it took Cam Newton a little bit of time to recognize that there was not a thirty plus million dollar a year job on the market when you released two weeks into the free agent signing period not only that there's not an obvious starting job that's out there, and so the longer this went on, and the less he heard from teams, and there really was nobody that he heard from the more he recognized that he had to find the right spot. And if you're going to find the right spot, there's nothing wrong with taking new. England Riga tour with Bill Belichick and Josh mcdaniels, and the new quarterbacks coach Jed fish in an offense. That obviously is going. Going to be trying to replace Tom Brady where you're competing with the guy like Jarret, Stidham hasn't proven that he can play yet in the NFL and so cam. Newton goes to New England on a one year deal where he gets to reestablishes value show that he's healthy, and over the shoulder and foot injuries that he has been dealing with the last two years, and this is the the place that he now tries to relaunch his NFL career at the age of thirty one, which should be most quarterbacks, the prime of their career, no question and Adam. How likely is it that this is in effect? A one year auditioned for Cam to be with the Patriots beyond this season. Wendy what I would say is this if Cam Newton plays well, the Patriots obviously would be interested in resigning him, and if not, they have the ability to move on from him. It depends on how the year goes. It's difficult to forecast that right now. All we know is that the Patriots signed a former. Most Valuable Player who won that award in two thousand fifteen, who has tremendous ability who goes into this offense, and now we'll have to learn it, which is not going to be an easy task in a shortened off season for put as the ability to be dominant quarterback. If he can pick up that system if he plays that way, you would think that no one would not let him out. Out, the door, but again there's a whole year. They WANNA see Newton. They WANNA see them. They want to see a year goes to. It's truly to say that just yet well. Yeah, I mean a lot can happen in a year. We've all we've all seen that in Steve. How do you like the fit between cam? Newton and what he brings on the field and the New England patriots. When healthy. Rusted Cam Newton mean it's like. Manna from heaven right I mean in many ways I, think Josh, mcdaniel and Bill Belichick sitting around a lot of times. Saying. Could you imagine what we could do with this guy or that? Guys? They play these players. Run the League, and they see them in places where I'm sure they say because they're supreme of conference. Not Hubris just supreme confidence that if we could get a hold of him what we could do with him, and we can really expend on what you're seeing around the league. What we can do is special, and so I'm sure they're saying this about. If Cam comes in his foot is okay. Because we know the arm is all right, we should. We saw that early last year before. So. We know that he's healthy. If his what is good and he can move, you've got. Hungry. Sophisticated and the type caliber Blair in New England, where you have bill and Josh saying you can't imagine what we're GonNa, do with this kid and so I think that's I. think that's the conversation. That's happening right now. New England, Steve. Look it's anybody's guess at this point, but you. You have an opinion very qualified one. What do you believe the likelihood? Is that Cam Newton? Is the Patriots Starting Quarterback Week One? Again if healthy, if he can move around, I can't imagine them with his talent level, and what they think they can do them again. It becomes a you know it's a proof point for what they're out to show their out to show that we can do special things with special players, and so it's it becomes A. A right of passage to be in New England, and that we can take somebody, and we can show you amazing things that can be done and they've done that with flair after play after player so Cam Newton and healthy can move around. I. It's GonNa be, too. It's like a gravitational force when it's to special to be able to show what they can do with a great Cam Newton. Yeah,

"Now. You can't do that I do. We're talking about reality. Yeah no no no more Dulles in the him okay all right. He's reading an operate you can do it but that's what the NFL schedule is all about. And I liked that you pinpointed. Even though he's out of oxygen that Henry will have to forty exactly forty. Five yard runs in the second. Half of the titans would dopey deterred by Final game of the weekend. More final Final game over the weekend. Eighty six celtics ninety seven bulls who wins I'm going to go with the eighty six. Celtics course is because the celtics of the sixties broke my heart. Many times against the Lakers. So I'm just angry. Do that to that era which guard me forever. All right. That is a good prediction. All find out together who wins that series more we appreciate it and if you want to continue with their ridiculous Steve Underwood. Line of questioning feel free. You have no idea how di delightful this person looks. I wanted to ask all of you guys to call up this person and look at what he looks like more. Can you explain to the audience? We tried to explain it to the audience. What Steve Underwood is doing with his mustache. Soul patch situation. I can't believe our lives have gone this long without us knowing about this human being and what it is he's trying to do with his facial hair. It's a little bit of a Walrus. Look we'RE BASICALLY LIVES IN HOUSTON? I don't know where the connection there is but he is. Hey I will say this this action today of retirement will lead to a gigantic news in the NFL sometime in the next three years. Leave it at that minute. That's too mysterious. And it has nothing to do with his mustache situation. What do you mean Oh wait a minute? I know what it is to. I know what it is. It's Peyton manning rights to God's as Peyton manning and more good talking to you thank you thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. Thanks for having me good breakdown. More listen to.

"Good the colts have their quarterback of the future in the selected university of Washington gunslinger Jacob Eason in the fourth round of the NFL draft Saturday but GM Chris Ballard pleaded that expectations be tempered you know let's slow our roll a little bit in terms of the protagonist guys the next messiah walking into town he was a fourth round pick we didn't move up to the first pick in the draft the six foot six Easton no doubt has a cannon for an arm and ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that he had the talent to go higher but slid due to character flaws Easton said he can't wait to compete and prove himself as a workhorse a

"Eat today bear with us as we try to find our footing here over the next couple of days. Because we're doing the show in an unusual way me and Mike are at my home. Quarantine stugatz is at his home with his dog. Vinny Finigan and meantime joins us now with her dog. Lenny so we we WANNA talk some football with Meena. The de'andre Hopkins News or rumors that he might be traded. Where's that coming from? You know there's always been a little bit of smoke around him. I think it kind of dates back to the McNair days. The protests as you remember he was kind of outspoken about not being happy with how things are being handled there. But because he's so good and obviously it's signed a giant long term extension. Nobody really made anything of it. This seems like that. I can't be the Texans are sensibly. Opd Lenny just walked in. He just opened the door on his own. And he's Mu Andrea Andrea. We could do not interested. I'm so proud of him. I think the the reason it though it never made any sense is because Houston against the allies. I suppose they contend for your team. You forget made the playoffs and actually wins game. Sometimes so it didn't really make any sense only makes sense. I think in the context of that smoke and perhaps some dissatisfaction on his part because from a team perspective. It doesn't make any sense me. And what's the what's the move here? Either over the weekend or today and there's been a lot of them. What's the move here? That's that surprised you. The most well didn't love the Tannahill deal but that didn't surprise me Claes Campbell. Trade was dumb for the Jaguars but they're in full tear down mode. I think what I've found fascinating is a lack of a market for Tom. Brady and I suppose I Dan. You know we've been on highly questionable every day. We have to answer a different question about a new team being linked to Brady and every day. I said I don't know why this team would want Tom Brady right. And then the Patriots fans get really upset but but it's like cognitive dissonance because on one hand like how dare you insult Tom Break. That was really bad. New England accent. How you wouldn't have a Boston. That's not even Boston though. That's another country you're just did. He's a wicked good getting worse. It's getting worse than we got there. You go so the past fans like how dare you those getting closer I think. Yeah you know my God how is it that you gotten progressively worse at this person nation.

"At Wendy's in the morning available at participating. Us Wendy's for all the latest headlines and information tune into sports center on ESPN radio all throughout the day. We're an hour and Mike Ryan. Is Jack in the outsider drinking straight from the Jack Daniels Bob Chris? Mortensen joins US now on ESPN RADIO. We've got ten years of labor peace. Thank you as always for coming by here and bringing your credibility to a situation that doesn't have any credibility in this ten to one slot eastern. But can you help us understand what happened here? With this. Closed at vote. This close vote did did. Nfl owners successfully divided the players between the haves and the have-nots did the have nots. Did the short-sighted just vote for ten years of labor peace and kind of do something that a lot of the rich guys were saying they shouldn't do. I think you have to experience in twenty eleven during the lockout Even though many of these players for in the League today we're not part of that. I think that's when the the owners shove a deal down its role in divided. The players If you remember the players actually got together a so-called war chest of money in the union to only two determined that if you actually did the math it wasn't going to work unless you're willing to sit out even want anything amount of time. I think the reason the vote was so close. Simple seventeen games and there were there. Were players just on principle loan. No matter how good this deal is and there's a lot of Nice ornaments in this deal for the players And they're just not decorative. There was real money there and And and maybe they'll create a middle class was currently lacking the NFL But when you had the voices like. Jj Watt and Aaron Rodgers. Speak out right away Be Richard Sherman. Big Name guys who certainly have respect and I know guys is big with. J. J. Watt so I think a lot of those players I think they were players immediately said well. They're voting no. I'm voting. No which is why you heard that scramble like well wait a minute. Can we change the the vote In in the Union's executive boards. No so I don't think they divided the players. I think but if you actually look at this deal the owners wanted this deal and gave I think more than they normally would get more than they would get next year because they WANNA get the TV media rights deal done now because this coming fall but we don't know what. The Corona Virus Kobe nineteen is going to do to any Type of negotiation. But certainly at the time. The owners voted for it. There were things they didn't like about this deal but they knew they wanted to get the media and TV rights. Done 'cause they could they could. They'RE GONNA kill it with with the TV deals and the streaming rights deal and for them to do it. They needed to see a player's things. I don't think they would have given the next year more at how is it. Do you have an explanation for half five hundred of the current players in the NFL did not vote on the proposed CBA that has to infuriate Tamara Smith and most of the players. Can you explain to me? Why forty percent of Americans didn't vote in the last election? When president trump was Elected our president now. I can't okay so I listen. I don't know why players some players may just You know ignore emails Or just don't feel like their their their vote counts and I know people. I know a lot of people over there when over elections whether primary elections general elections That they don't vote because they don't feel their vote counts I. It makes no sense to me because the unions Andy Smith the head of the Union. They were they have worked really hard for ten months. And they dis Smith and and other people on with executives. They visited all thirty two teams during the season and sometimes multiple occasions to explain the details of the still and how important it was for them to have a voice. And if you read dismiss letter and you can read it on twitter. Ke never recommended yes or no. Vote on this deal so I think that I think that that's just the player and the player doesn't like the deal. They'll have themselves to blame. But I got a feeling that they're gonNA like this deal. Just like in twenty eleven. We thought the owners really really Smashed the players in that deal as it turns out is the last five years of on on Players have done quite well. I also have one before. Stop one theory. Is I think that people who are in the upper class I class of. Nfl players making money. They're the ones who don't like this deal. Even though they're going to get a lot of money. Can you explain to us more? What your personal thoughts are on the sheer volume of NFL news and money being thrown around and how tone deaf it feels given everything else going on in in America the world and in Sports. Yeah listen we've Behind the tone deaf An optics is the word that people use and I'm kind of like I've gone both ways on it but here. Here's what I think Tell me when this is all going to end. Tell me when the U. Corona virus. Kobe nineteen of threat is going to end One thing you can do is through technology and telephones you can strike up a deal. That's how it's done usually There's some issues about taking the physical that's usually for second tier and third tier guys I think that most most most of the public jen only and this was even when players are making three hundred thousand dollars a year when the man on the street as we which is a cliche thought they were being overpaid They're going to have the same reaction. This the tone deaf through to the guy who's who's making any money fifteen or we're going to fifteen dollars an hour And our You know otherwise you tell me when it's GonNa end and what have chaos is GonNa Ensue. The money is there players who have been waiting. It's the players who've been wanting to sun players who had this anxiety about where they're going to live how much money they're going to be paid their next team Our FAMILIES WE'RE GONNA move. They like to have a little bit more of a clear. Answer taking the next step in the process And that's why we are proceeding as of today more. How do you feel about Ryan Tannehill? Ninety one million guaranteed hundred eighteen million overall Is he worth that kind of money? You're worth whatever you can get just like you stugotz. Come on give me a break. I mean here's the thing about it. If you look at the contract technically they can get out of after two years. These contracts that we report in the media They're technically accurate. But if you go into the details you can see that some of these players whether it'd be a Ryan Tannehill. Or even jared. Goff or other guys. You could see the teams actually have opt-outs Jimmy Garoppolo. Bean one where they can kind of walk away from a couple of years and yeah. They paid a lot of money in the first two or three years but they get out of it so Ryan Tannehill play great football for seven games. They liked him. They know he's he's young And so therefore on the surface it looks like a big deal. But it's to be honest with you. He he's going to be under Margaret Mo- most quarterbacks when when the quarterback a finally settled more. What do you make of the chatter that the extra games might be sort of bundled together and some sort of neutral site television package for streaming giant? I've heard it I would I would probably turn the question around to you. And and that's you. Where do you feel? It doesn't change what I do. I do you. You Watch Games. How do you need to stop asking US questions? About how trump got elected when the virus is going to end? We ask you the question. I mean what works you answer them? Why do you keep throwing question back? Let Me Rephrase Joe Fan L. Dan I think I think we have Joe Panzer because personally. I don't care no I will say this. I didn't like seventeen game schedule. I'll give you my opinion. I didn't like seventeen games schedule but I WOULD. I tell you this. I think there were owners itching to force in eighteen games schedule next year. So on seventeen game how you do. We talked one year the one conference. We'll have the normal eight game home schedule and the next year the conference will have a nine game schedule. You know vice versa. I don't know how it works. We know they're going to be independent sites. They're already independent Sites mutual sites that are being played on and You know I don't I don't like the number. I know toughness on player especially guys who are in the trenches to just be ready to play by Sunday Each week 'cause it takes. It takes a long recovery But you know if you do the math and a very some people do the math over average player square lifetime. It's for more games than they normally would play more. Are the Cowboys trying to find a job for Jason Garrett other than head coach?

"So Jason Garrett is still the head coach of the cowboys for now despite a general belief that he will not be the coach the team next year so what's taking so long making a with the fort worth star telegram says team owner Jerry Jones has always marched to the beat of his own drum don't want that about your go shooting contracts or situations like that he's not going to do it because he doesn't have to he doesn't have to do anything right now you don't have your own city Jason Garrett under contract for another thirteen days I think I think it's January fourteenth expires or something like that to do anything he doesn't it will expire and all he has to do is either extend them the new deal or taking care will no longer be employed because that's what his contract yeah if for some reason jury decides to bring them back which you can't rule anything out with him if he decides to bring back don't be surprised the guy was a good year because if you look at the timeline of which there's a lot of time now for took to look back on and say well this is what happened they go up they go down they go up they go down and if you look at it before the season started they were due to go down and they did they were from a double what they want from a playoff team came in with divisional round to retain the missed the plaster finish they may they finished eight made four times in his tenure don't be surprised I mean didn't opening this way I would be surprised if he came back but don't be shocked because his team again and now angel says the job is still one of the most coveted head coaching positions in sport actual narrative out there that exist that is incorrect that no one can work with Jerry Jones anybody can work Jerry Jones these metal from you not really metal some if your a strong coach with conviction and you have a clear purpose and idea in mind he's going to go along with it ninety five percent of the time now when you put in a coach who is who is deferential and you just have to have the job we Phillips very Switzer chain gaily to an extent and certainly Dave Campo Grande then he just does whatever wants anything done with the right idea in mind with the heart with a good heart but you know the fan you know takes over and includes his night Jason Garrett was really good for for Jerry Jones a lot of ways you're gonna listen more than you think because he gave Jerry a clear outline of what the council we should look for a player what they should do every day there are some exceptions were teary push something down his throat and that happened from time to time with any team but this idea that Jerry Jones no we can work with them it's not true this is not true the problem the ropes to the long ways Jerry talks and I'll say things that sometimes drug coach crazy because talks and we love them for it he's not going to stop because he owns the team you know hopefully that talking is good for the bottom line creating interest in and out of trouble is now will Jones make a big splash and hire another big coaching name if he does decide to let Jason Garrett go Randy the Los Angeles Lakers New York Yankees buy Dallas Cowboys cetera whomever you hired the splash are there certain games out there that is in place to the job I don't believe I don't believe you are Josh McDaniels the offensive coordinator with the patients who had done it was unsuccessful run as a head coach in Denver I don't think he's going to do that but I you know whether it's been mall and I know Chris Mortensen who is a plugin guy through that one out damn all the head coach of Florida there was a mystery to it because Dan Mullen was Jack Prescott tech coach at Mississippi state but remember he hires winners Bozo the clown whether it's even bring it back Jason Garrett guarantee you one thing it's going to create a buzz a lot of headlines there will meet with the Joneses tomorrow for the third time concerning his coaching

"I think that's a great call as far as being overlooked but i think that was a cousins national thing. I'm not even gonna call it perception because it's like he's he's average. Well i mean i think they have a heck of a team. I think obviously delvin cook being staying healthy <hes> although they they've if you got a backup back they love <hes> in casey does <hes> the madison kid the rookie but they're one team. I'm really anxious to see seattle adult play this year. <hes> you know because i think that you know with carol did last year. I was one of the best coaching jobs i've seen in ten years is totally remade the roster for the most part and reinvented themselves and made a run at it and should be better this year okay all right. So do you wanna make a pick. Do you have a pick or you don't have to do that. I don't have to do it. I mean really ah e._s._p._n. Nasty too but i believe that the the the winner of the chiefs patriots game once again play in the a._f._c. championship last year whoever wins that game is going to go into the super bowl and i would be inclined to say the patriots are the favorite because everybody i've talked to you. Die trust is the defense is going to be better. Maybe much better despite losing trey flowers and the quarterback there is no slippage. I'm sorry i i know that the tight end thing is a big thing but i just see i see the winner the chiefs patriot games. That's not telling you but i say that <hes> <hes> i think i think in the n._f._c. i would probably lean toward the eagles and vikings is my my super bowl picks uh-huh although i just just got a text from the saints and said don't forget about us what we're not live so obvious not making that up so i didn't answer your question question. No i actually liked the way you answered it. Instead of saying defiantly. These are the only two teams any other team is a stupid choice like i just kind of wanted that collection of of of a few teams they're up at the top and i think it is good to bring it up because when i look at just a couple of weeks in how we felt about the vikings like i i haven't done all my prep stuff or some of the other stuff. It'll be doing but you're right like the vikings are completely off the radar in comparison to where they were a year ago national nationally. I'm not saying locally but nationally <hes> yeah the best man iran yeah. You've been the best been. One of my great. Pleasure is watching you <hes> just develop into one of my favorite <hes> <hes> guys that <hes> e._s._p._n. And we wish you godspeed and great success be on this and we will catch up though however way we need to do and you know you you've kind of taken over my old home. "He's the guy was with them down in kabul rockies the guy who also represented to other interesting players one is eric dickerson and another marshall faulk and air gives us and didn't didn't get what he wanted from the rams so he got himself forced out of there and traded to the colds and marshall faulk didn't get what he wanted with the coast enforces way <music> out of there and got himself to the rams which is a weird twist of fate there even though they weren't playing same <hes> times pair warriors <hes> so you do have an agent who's a reference point is you can force yourself out and get the money you want. <hes> in this case you know two years left on your contract object. I think handcuff some final thought here more. I know it'd be real easy to just sit here and go all right teams in the n._f._c. going up against the patriots. Is there with all your visits and all your conversations a couple teams that you think or maybe more likely to get to a super bowl. Perhaps we're getting credit for <hes>. That's a that's a great question. I think people have <hes> d d. Do you think people have forgotten about the minnesota vikings. Absolutely i think cousins in that year. It was like oh wait. This is why washington wanna pay him. Yeah well so talented though god there was i remember looking through it like i like atlanta last year and then everybody got hurt immediately but when i would look at the vikings i remember making this joke like when you look at the vikings depth chart at the start of the season last year you went. This team is insanely doubted so yeah..

"Everything. He sees about their car. He's smart at the the photographic memory part. He's you know he's got the good arm but i think what he wants to see and he's now giving them weapons. You know especially with antonio brown and i do believe antonio brown. We'll be playing from start to finish unless he gets has a real injury. <hes> he's been a lot of him hanging. There and bring explosive plays to to the raiders. That's what he that's what he's gonna wanna see. I think there was some trepidation and may not have been their cars fault because they didn't really have a dynamic running game last year and their offense line could've been shaky standing there and take the hit and cut it loose and make the big plays and if that doesn't happen <hes> you know it. You know it's a coin flip. What do you make the raiders because i've been watching hard knocks. I mean most of us all of the show and you know even though there was some times i've i've been very upfront about this. Grooms great idiots p._i._n. It bummed me out a little bit when it felt like he was constantly flirting with all these things to kind of money. Look i mean your your own thing and if that's working out for you and it worked for john. That's great go ahead. Get it done and now as i watch this and everybody thinks he's now this idiot you now. However played out last year like social media has turned jon gruden into present day n._f._l. Idiot and i just refuse to believe that that's true and i pick up. Little little things are going. I liked this guy again and i actually i. I wanna see this work for whatever reason because i've never cared about the raiders but i don't know. I don't know why i feel that way and i'm. I'm just not sure if it's derek carr. I look the antonio brown thing. None of this is surprising so far but if you're right if you play sixteen who cares so what do you make of this whole raiders thing in real expectations for them. Well i mean i. I think they're going to be better. I think your problem is is is maybe the division they plan but regardless of that i mean i think there is going to have a good year. I think antonio tonio brown may not reach quite the numbers that he had with ben rothlisberger in pittsburgh..

"Well. Nobody really gets. It's this but we paid them all this money. I so it's tricky thing with math. Where if you if you have a bigger number early. The numbers are going to be smaller. Not a lot of people know that but i mean theoretically i'm like all right. I don't think i understand no. I'm just saying okay. I i would not have to go. I think you only really pay a outlook for example what the vikings kirk cousins like. I understood why you do that because they look like. We have a window to win a super bowl like we need a guy. That's better than case keenum or somebody we can rely on cousins was the best guy so they went out and got him okay. It could blow up in their face but i understand why they did it. With the forty niners trading for garoppolo giving that huge contract like they were nowhere near contender at all they still had a ton of holes on that roster they still do and so for me. I'm like why would you. Why would you bring in this guy paying a ton of money. He's unproven when the best of the best teams. It seems like in the best situation you could be in the n._f._l. Right now is drafting a quarterback and having a rookie deal hoping he turns into something so you can spend your money on other players and win a super bowl. You know what i mean so i if even if garoppolo ends up being great you kind of hamstrung on yourself in you know with with the cap and now that he's not that he's not great. You certainly set yourself back a few years. Are you willing to wait a minute like as as down as i may have been on the transaction. You sound like you're almost done with him already. No i'm not i'm not selling them because i do feel bad i i you know the he obviously went what was five or six at the end end of his first year there and he looked good and it was like okay. This guy is going to be you know a potential pro bowl quarterback maybe more and then he gets those and i didn't think he was. He wasn't as good in those games. Though now i know i know this until you he wasn't but there was some hope there whatever and because i hadn't had a quarterback in a while so you look at it and you go okay what timoteo what's up jeff garcia but then he gets hurt so i'm like okay. It's kinda takes a full year to get back from those knee injuries usually right and maybe he might not he might not get that time and on and that might be unfortunate but i i don't know what else there is to say like. I think at some point if it doesn't work this year like you can't just hope he's going to be better next year right because i think she's really good coach too. I think he's a good offense of coach. Shannahan is not a good coach than the smartest n._f._l. People that i know are all idiots because everybody everybody that you would respect whether it's on the air or the stuff they say about this dude off the air i don't i just have a hard time believing he's maybe he's. He's just one of the i mean. Would he be one of those guys. It's like you're not so much lead guitarist but terrific rhythm. I don't know all right so we'll have. It's more all those things okay so. Let's do that but i just reminder to check out the woge. Pod the pod g._m.'s. I don't know if you guys noticed this but <hes> maybe maybe which doesn't care but a couple of requests we put in for gm's absolutely and then they end up on the spot so i would listen to that pot. I in this one second. People are gonna think i'm mad right now. This is pro woche pot. Come on this is very pro. I'm a pro provos coach guy okay here. "He's gonna show up. He's going to take it seriously and he's not going to be the quarterback jerk from high school like i think those are all the things you have to start thinking about like that's that's why whenever i watch hard knocks and i look at the backups in those those huddles like dude. Do you want everyone to doubt you like takeover. The huddle like i don't give a bleep if you're gonna be cut in two weeks. Gonna huddle look. Those guys in the is in take this thing over the raiders backup. Q._b.'s are betas gets. I can't believe like fake it fake it and who cares you know but get out there and take over the huddle as quarterback when i didn't play and and i know that stuff all right so here's the case against all an eighty nine percent passer rating first career. He's fifty eight in the playoffs. I mean it's a massive drop off. Dig a little deeper. The bengals have averaged just under eleven points per game and those four playoff losses and it's not like they're losing to the pats every year. They lost to houston twice choice san diego in the colts that is scary scary stuff but cincinnati that means it probably going to get a new deal all right final joe flacco the gene chizik of n._f._l. Q._b.'s flacco two thousand twelve super bowl run is as if patrick beverley dropped forty a game every night for the clippers in the playoffs last year and one n._b._a. Championship not knocking patrick beverley but that wouldn't happen the reason i call them the gene of the n._f._l. Q._b.'s is that when chizik was hired by auburn inventhelp went off was like this is terrible. This is stupid and then he won a national championship but van pelt still felt like he was kind of right. I kept telling everybody the flacco geico matt ryan comparison was ridiculous and that when flacco was winning those playoff games early the ravens. He was literally doing nothing to help the team. Do those things okay. He wasn't go through it and then leading up to that plan for. I'm like you guys realize it's the most overrated guys. It's the one loss record. Your loss loss again once again. You're not paying attention what he is is there isn't doing and then he turns into joe montana's more aggressive awesome stronger dad and it was it was dumb founding and then monday scott are are doing the show. He's like what's up now because he kind of liked flacco. I think he didn't like flacco. He just didn't like my opinion and i go. I guess i'm wrong and i knew deep down. I wasn't and i didn't want to admit it but what what the hell is going to do. He played flawless football for all those games and won a title. It was an out of body experience. It was so so the reason we call the chizik is that it's i had to take on somebody. He does the only thing that you can do like winning a national championship. Two years and flacco took a little bit longer than chizik but the whole timer watch this. This is why i didn't believe in two thousand twelve. He has money on the books but it's all dead money for years after this. I get why denver did it. Drew lock the backup. Kevin evan hooligan. Israel hogan is the number two right now technically on the depth chart if you're looking at those things that was updated the twenty first of august. This kind of feels like just eli part to really is that it's not the same mm placards with the new franchise but it's like look if you're going to be the guy that you've been then. We're probably going to move. I think that's what the giants are going to do and they have more equity in dana. The jones then the broncos due drew lock but i should see i mean you could use the word equity but i should probably just say they put more resources into it. Just by the pick alone he gone through some of the flacco stuff he had low depot numbers last year..

"Over. I don't care i go back to the makeup room jeez like you were into this. Okay all right andy dalton. There's there's two things here that are very clear. He's going into his night season. He's seventeen and and a half million. They can cut him now. Income it anytime the way they structure the back into this contract is he got one of those big extensions. It was more fake than others but it doesn't mean he's not gonna make the rest of this money. He's seventeen and a half michigan. Next year began. They can cut him at anytime backups jeff driscoll new coach zack taylor. He's basically a twenty and tanguy twenty not rebounded points rebounds but twenty and ten touchdowns interceptions his productions fall off a little bit he had sixty combined the second and third year again on some of this regression and whatever but i feel like we kind of know who he is hit a lower q._b._r. Back then when he was throwing more touchdowns he had that great two thousand fifteen but he got hurt and played in those thirteen games did get into the playoffs and that's the thing he's getting this team to the playoffs five times you wanna give him credit which i think deserves credit for in the year that he got hurt but he's only four in the playoffs and this is what really stands out and there's no perfect stat here just and keep hammering it over and over again. I think what i'm doing is bringing up quarterbacks but also exposing how easy it is going either direction for these dudes if you want to any dalton you kind of know what you're getting. It seems like he's the right guy to be the quarterback not a raw raw dude or any of that kind of stuff put he's as we know from his high school speech that canal and i asked about it the super bowl and you get kind of annoyed with us which is fine but you know we know we know. Dalton is it. I imagine in the locker room. It does kind of work. So whatever you're you're missing. Some of that fire you at least know. He's an adult in the room..

"Can i do that to hike. Is there a camp that gets ready for this seminar. I go to like a marriott minneapolis and so you're going through a midlife crisis. Here's a pamphlet. Here's what to expect the corvette. That girl from twin peaks at you always liked. I'm not saying everybody the same. I mean if you just abandon your family because you hit weird in your forties. That's not cool. I'm not endorsing that but let's face it. There are some elements to the midlife crisis you go bad so yeah i i did post a picture of new with racing shirts off anyway. What's oh that shirt off dude got to you have to wear the bandanna when you're beach racing. Everybody knows that sand intake. I would assume yeah if you don't have the shield down. Forget it and by the way we didn't raise for their shirt off because the seat belts like one of those deals where it's the right buckle into like a buckle. That's in between your legs. It's like the thing that keeps it all together and then another left's deal and it's like putting this hinge together and then you clamp down and you're in there because if that thing roles you just be suspended. You'll be like skywalker the second star wars. It's okay <hes> <hes>. Let's do this quarterback thing because i don't. I don't think i have any rambling stuff. I'm thinking about getting on a plane here very shortly again and destination unknown so we're just gonna look at the flights and look. I have a couple days to burn and i know what's going to have football starts. I'll be looking at this couch and i'm looking at right now and i'm going to be on that thing like twenty hours weekend so may try to sneak out one more time so i'll let ya allah gino hartford. Okay now. Please please do. I'm around so i have a theory working theory theory here how many quarterbacks we're gonna call them. The last shot okay. These are the quarterbacks that i think in their current situation our last shot with their team okay and you give me any push-back you want and i did some contract stuff. I did the backup stuff. I really was digging deep. I was on five different analytic websites last night and i got to tell you this. If you want to do that with one on guy you can talk yourself into. Almost anyone and you can talk yourself out of almost anyone analytics are awesome and they're also terrible so yeah that's right. It was crazy because i started looking at stuff and then i'd start reading like local coverage of guys and if you wanted to stick up for any of these quarterbacks you could do it and i'm even going to try all right elimiating meaning. This is an obvious one. We're gonna ask more about every one of these dudes and see if my list of six is too short to long whatever unrestricted free agent twenty twenty so it doesn't matter that can move right on. We know what they just invest justin daniel jones. He's basically been average to slightly below average for three years although his t._d. Interception ratio sixty six support lesser years isn't terrible. He was twenty fifth and q._b._r. Last year four this is judy three straight years with.

Sir what's going on. How uncomfortable are you like in like the farewell tour thing and no. I definitely on the back of your mind and your sleep because you're not your guy like once kind of attention like hey. We're gonna miss you yeah. The two thousand seventeen sign off was was it and those lucky enough to kind of keep this going. I've i've talked about this before or but <hes> my contract is up august thirty first. I started the ringer september first and you know e._s._p._n.'s okay. Do you wanna keep doing some of these and i said yes because i like working so everybody's everybody's very happy. There's there's nothing you know about it but yeah i i feel like it's been a i just i don't want to do. I've already made this joke but it's the longest goodbye ever because we kept thinking it was good by a million times and so i look at instead of being annoying negative about it definitely would have been when i was younger. I look at like hey. It's gonna cool to state a place like two years. I thought i was going to so i was talking to a guy internally who was a ooh a big fan big s._a._p. And russillo fan back in the day and kind of chat me up about it and i was like if you listened to the last episode yet he's like no. I can't bring myself. I self to it because i think i'd get a to emotional and i was like wow okay that is <hes> as intense that is pretty intense. I will add that. You know doing this job. You know hey. I just want to do a good job. I wanna watch games. I want to try to get good information. I just don't want to sound like immediate right. I i wanna be the guy that people like even if you didn't like me you're like yeah but the kind he was on top stuff. That's really all i wanted to do but when people tell you hey okay i was like i got a dam or a tweet. The other day i forget <hes> commuting back and forth to stay in touch with my fiance on say in scour the only thing that got me through it because the whole setup socked has started out driving a truck and now a manager but in the beginning like those long drives it was is your show. You don't realize when you have a national show like that for that long. How many different people feel like they know you and got to know you and then light you you and it's a completely one way relationship but when you're given the chance to hear from this many people about how much like what you did it's just awesome so thanks to everybody because i've you see most of the stuff not all this stuff because sometimes i just whatever i wanna modes where i'm checking and other times not so. I have this quarterback thing. I don't know. Do we need to cover anything else. 'cause people seem to really like the travel stuff from kabo last week. She's usually always the way it works. There's some other stories that have have to save for a different podcast and trust me that is not me being the center of attention in those stories. It's it's just a social experiment. Let's just put it that way all right. It's social experiment that when you do by yourself sometimes people can be aggressive with you in a way that you may not be inviting so. Let's see anything else that we need to talk about. Now i mean i think the last thing i say is i'm glad you posted the the beach each racing photo shirtless love that because when i said hey you know what's up with a midlife crisis like i'm always trying to be a little tongue in cheek with. I don't want to be insensitive to people that are going through crisis. I laugh but there's people that talk about a midlife crisis. This is like oh man. I'm like well. What what does that mean like you buy the car you always wanted. You younger girls like oh that sucks..

Chargers, Melvin Gordon And Ten Million Dollars discussed on SportsCenter AllNight

"Time Joseon adders are reporting the agent for Chargers running back Melvin Gordon has requested a trade because charges are not backing off their offer of ten million per season which represents a roughly twice the salary schedule to make in the final year of his rookie deal they remain at a record you know not wanting to report because he feels like he's valuation is higher than ten million when you have to put that in the context knowing that Todd Gurley right now is what at fourteen point three lay beyond del thirteen one David Johnson at thirteen million my understanding is that the comp that in being out there right now is that David Johnson and Melvin Gordon are similar in terms of how they should be paid and they are definitely still at a gap between those numbers and so right now he's going to stay out until the situation gets resolved nice of Gordon toll charges that if he does not receive a new deal that's acceptable obviously he'll sit out demanded trade he's followed through on both threats Louis Riddick Damien woody Chris Mortensen with insight on how this plays out in if Gordon has any leverage in this hold out he doesn't have the leverage because the charges obviously feels so his replacements is number two or number three players like Austin Meckler Justin Jackson will give them enough of a of a level of production a percentage of production may not equal what number will give them enough to where they have enough other weapons on the field to make up the difference and they're just going to go with the you know one year at a time type of philosophy and if he doesn't like it then they're gonna trade I think he's out on the football team before the regular season starts and hopefully he can find that one suitor who not only is willing to pay a high price to get him but is also willing to pay him long term which is what he's after after lands a former running back and running back coach and the one thing I know by if the land he's very confident that he can find another running back you mention it already the fact that Philip rivers in the last year for the of Joey Bosa is coming up they have players in the pipeline so to think that Melvin Gordon's going to get you know the levy on bail early heard Todd Gurley absolute because are guaranteed a lot of people looking to toggle the contract and is like wool we don't want any part of that so okay Melvin Gordon is in a situation where he's not gonna get paid by the Los Angeles Chargers and more likely he's going to be sued no with another team actually ten million dollars is the charges off and that's kind of where the value him and they do have other contracts to get done and they're not a cash rich team we've established that for different reasons that without getting into details Melvin Gordon's only played one full season out of a source for any is a good back is he an elite back you can argue one way or the other but the bottom line is the charges are going to get permission for Bilbo is represented to go get a trade they want to control the situation he's not levy on bills he has a contract levy on bill did not have a contract last year so it's not a similar situation ten million dollars is the charges off and that's kind of where the value him and they do have other contracts to get done and they're not a cash rich team we've established that for different reasons that without getting into details but Melvin Gordon's only played one full season of the source for any is a good back is he in the league back you can argue one way or the other but the bottom line is the charges are going to get permission for Bilbo is represented to go get a trade they want to control the situation he's not levy on bills he has a contract levy on bill did not have a contract last year so it's not a similar situation ultimately I think the charges feeling and we talked about this yesterday and make your Damian Moore and and the lens perspective is they do fill like if necessary if gore insanity assigned eventually then you can put them on the market as a team it is the one with the agent do the shopping Eric Williams covers the Chargers for ESPN provided this take on why the charger should find a resolution with Gordon if they have aspirations to make a run in the playoffs he was on Spain and company yeah I mean it's basically a stand off at this point you know Gordon wants to be paid amongst the highest running backs normally he thinks his his statistics over the last couple years point to that he should be pay you know like David Johnson girly let me del the Chargers obviously disagree on that date they are pricey them again according to reports and and I believe they're accurate about ten million per year you mean another structure the contract how much of that is guaranteed how much that is fully guaranteed when he would receive that type of money so those are things that are going on in terms of negotiations to try to get Melvin in the camp I did the things that are promising if both sides want to get a deal done Melvin Gordon wants to play for the charge the Chargers want Melvin Gordon the place so you would think at some point there there would be a compromise that could be made to get Mel in the camp because he remains to be seen you know Melvins representation that told the Chargers that you know that they would demand a trade at the contract demands aren't aren't made the charges are willing to trade him they basically haven't control for the next two to three years due to make five point six million in the following years rookie deal and they get franchise in another couple years no but it is important in terms of where the charge you want to go in the post season they can win games without knowing the crew that last year they want **** when no one was injured the issue is is can they want simple without melon and I think the answer probably is no and so I think that does give me a little bit of leverage yeah well he might want to look Gordon at levy on bell scenario the now jets running back doesn't second guess himself for sitting out last season a decision that cost them fourteen million in salary he did say you wish you could have told fantasy owners some type of way to not draft him or pick him never made it on the field

Russell Wilson gives deadline for Seahawks deal

"News from the world of football word out of Seattle. That Russell Wilson has given the Seahawks a deadline for a new deal. He's giving the Seahawks until April fifteenth. Although sources telling our Adam Schefter talks between the two sides are really not thought to be too far along ESPN insider, Chris Mortensen with our sage Steele. You do the math. Exactly thirteen days to meet. Russell Wilson's deadline. What are the chances that this thing gets done by his deadline chances are slim and could complicate some things, but remember April fifteenth started the offseason program phase threes OTA's, that's when you get on the field and start working. So listen deadlines make things happen and made his last contract that he's four years. Eighty seven million dollars in two thousand fifteen happened. Gatien counts twenty five million dollars against their cat. They'll have twenty million twelve million dollars cap space. So they'll have to get creative. And I think it'll take some time I would expect it gets done by the start of training camp or or certainly during that period there if it gets done by April fifteenth, and they're miracle workers. And the thing about is thinking about Aaron Rodgers contract ninety eight point seven million guaranteed and thirty three point five average. So I think Russell Wilson we will be shooting north of that regardless of what Rogers regardless of a deck Prescott gets when the Cowboys one hundred million dollar type of contract. You don't see going tracking on and mean, Russell Wilson. It's not going to hold out not play this season. I do not. Mentioned April fifteenth first day of the Seahawks off season

"I think of looking at the same thanking his seem and before you do something like that it that timing certainly caught me off guard Chris Mortensen with us here on ESPN radio more of the two jobs Packers Browns, which do you think is more attractive? Great question. You know, I'll say the Browns right now except except for this back the Green Bay Packers. What and lure man finish Willis? Okay. You have Aaron Rodgers. It was Dan who said what was that? My. I just realized Mike is real ever wanted to fight. Chris Mortensen more. He's a fundamentally decent, man. I wanna put hands on him right now. Let him finish his point. Please. Quarterback. Just just to get that vote that reaction out of order, Mike. Listen, everybody. Probably crazy. What what I think that John Dorsey who comes from the Packers organization rather by a lot of Packers people who put the thing together in Green Bay. I think they're putting some special together in Cleveland. So wait are they gonna hire? Mccarthy. Are they going to screw that all up? The jets are. I don't know. I I have no idea who they're going to hire. And but I'll say this. Of course, you want Aaron Rodgers. But there's a lot of pieces to the Packers puzzle. That has to come together we all think it's only a quarterback game. Well, it's not only a quarterback. You just open the show by ask me about Aaron Donald. Now, you get my blood pressure up. No. We don't wanna do that. Everybody calmed down we managed to enrage even the most fundamentally decent people around. But calling me that call Kirch it on the Bom. We're gonna talk about that. I put it on the poll who's more fundamentally decent Chris Mortensen or Tim Carson?.

A longtime assistant and head coach Tony spurlock Meanwhile in Canada Johnny Manziel has been traded can't play for the Hamilton tiger cats can't get on the field so they have traded him to the Montreal Alouette according to a TSN and reunites him with a familiar face Mike Sherman coach Manzella Texas a. and m. during his redshirt freshman season of two thousand eleven that was sherman's final season coaching the aggies I don't follow a ton of CFL football but the Alouette severity tried three different quarterbacks they have the worst offense in the l. so maybe Menzel is actually going to get a chance to, play that chance did, not exist with the Hamilton tiger, cats Johnny Manziel is. In Montreal and you're hearing time and again about, you know. What are the big issues between players and owners in the NFL is players one, guaranteed, money Owners aren't willing to give, it to them But they can look no further than the second pick in this year's draft saquon Barkley the New York Giants according to NFL media's Ian Rapoport are. Set to sign Barclay to his. Rookie deal that'll pay him thirty one point two million. Dollars guaranteed a four year deal fully guaranteed now rookies obviously have a lot less wiggle. Room than they did pre two thousand eleven the new CBA basically dictates with these guys are going to get the deal comes with, signing bonus of just over twenty million dollars and there's apparently, offset language that will keep Barclay from quote double dipping in the event of the giants. Cut him before the end of the contract and also it's worth pointing out that New York holds, the fifth an option for a fifth year which, is the case for all first round picks but it goes to show an Zeki l. fully. Guaranteed deal from the Dallas Cowboys didn't. Payments much money didn't go. As early in the draft. Is partly did there's a sticking point there Players and.
