"But this is such a slam dunk if Chris Paul can just solidify a bench that was really bad for much of last season. You play a lot of minutes and you'll probably get a lot of starts anyway just with this group and how old they are. I don't know. Again, look, it's easier said than done. If I had Chris Paul's resume, if I held the record for the most starts to begin a career in NBA history, I would be reluctant to be pulled out of that as well. But you have to realize what you're stepping into, which is a championship culture, frankly. A team that can win one that's not in its prime anymore but still has every ability to go out and win one, and that you get to solidify the weak part of that team. And potentially win six-man. What a cool story arc that would be that when you can't start or when you're not starting, you get to do that instead for a championship team. Can you imagine just what that narrative sounds like for his career? It's a really nice way to go out. I thought Chris Paul would be in the league right now. Most people thought after Houston ended he would have kind of disappeared the way of Carmelo Anthony. He played great in Oklahoma City, great in Phoenix. He's playing with house money right now. And to get one more contract that could be in today's NBA marketplace, $15, $20 million per year over a couple of years, I think a reserve role is where it's at. Also with Golden State, do we have to address the idea that after dealing with LaFare, Jordan Poole, the Warriors went out and signed a guy that Klay Thompson and Draymond Green said sucked at one point? I'm sure it's water under the bridge for these guys. I have no doubt that it's not going to be a lingering issue. But I thought that was hilarious. Klay Thompson legitimately said he was awful, and Draymond Green said something similar. He hit him with the Snoop Dogg Charlemagne clip where he's like, who? That was how they felt about Rodney Magruder. I'm sure they've not thought about Rodney Magruder since that night. The last storyline I want to throw out there, by the way, real quick is I want to see how Michael Malone motivates his guys in Denver because he's not going to be able to play the nobody believes in his card anymore. There's never been more wide support of Nicole Jokic as the best player in the NBA. I don't think he can fall back on the nobody pays attention to us, nobody thinks we can win routine. Which, by the way, I just want to point out that I saw Michael Malone in Los Angeles in the middle of last season, shook his hand in the tunnel, told him the Nuggets were my finals pick. He just completely ignored that the entire postseason run. You wanted him to shout you out? And then I saw him, I was leaving Eric Swelter's press conference in Miami and bumped into Michael Malone again. And I said, Coach, what did I tell you? You guys are my finals pick. Don't make me look like an idiot. So he's just, he's conveniently left that part out of the narrative. So I'm just curious to see how Coach Malone handles it this year. I don't think it's going to be any kind of issue there. I mean, look, Mike is still going to play the nobody believes in his card. Like the first comment that somebody makes about the Nuggets that is even remotely negative will be tack to the bulletin board in that Denver locker room metaphor. Chris, they're going to use you. They're going to use you as the bulletin board material. Let's keep it funky here. I'm sure whenever I have in my mouth about Denver, they'll do that. But I mean, look, like you think Nagole Jokic ever thought about anything anybody said? He was never motivated by any of that. I think organically Jamal Murray is going to be better. You know, he's now another year removed from that ACL injury. And I think the player we saw in the second half in the playoffs is going to be the player and more we see next year. I think Michael Porter Jr., if he stays healthy, he's going to be really good. I'm not overly concerned about the loss of Bruce Brown because I think Christian Brown can step in and give them good minutes. Jeff Green loss is tough too, but they've got pieces there. I think they're fine. It's going to chug along, mostly because their superstar does not give a fuck, like just does not care. He's just going to do his thing and be great and the rest of the team will kind of fall in line behind him. They to me are prohibitive favorite to at least win the regular season crown, at least be the number one seed in the Western Conference. If playoffs come around and Phoenix comes together, the Clippers fully healthy, that might be a different argument. When those teams, if they're fully loaded and looking like they're playing with good chemistry, they're going to be tough to beat. But for the regular season, it's Denver's number one seed to lose. I'll just say about Denver. I'm mostly in agreement with you. I think Jokic, like you said, there's no shaking him. There's no rattling him. He just produces.

"I was in Orlando this past weekend for some boxing stuff, so I consumed a lot of Magic content while I was down there. Like literal Magic or Orlando Magic basketball? I mean, I went to Magic Kingdom. There you go. Okay. But like Orlando Magic, it was for work. It was for work. The more I read about Orlando and study Orlando, and I was just consuming game notes too while I was down there, I kind of have a feeling they're going to have a sneaky good year. Somebody asked me about this for a mailbag question that I posted on Tuesday on SI.com, but like who could be the Sacramento Kings of this year, the team that comes out of nowhere and just does things that nobody expects? Orlando kind of fits that mold. They're not Sacramento because Sacramento had some very proven commodities there. De'Aaron Fox was a proven commodity. De'Aaron Fox was a proven commodity. You don't really have many, if any, proven commodities in Orlando. What you do have is some ridiculous young talent. Like Paolo Benchiro, terrifying offensive potential. Franz Wagner, a really good player. I was looking at some of the numbers. Franz Wagner ranked the top 10 in fourth quarter scoring last year. Markelle Fultz, never going to be the number one pick, but second half of the season, the average is like 16 and 5 or 16 and 6. It was pretty good numbers. You've got two first round picks that they're going to be working into the rotation, Anthony Black and Jett Howard. You've got some ex-lottery slash high first round picks in Cole Anthony and Jalen Suggs. There's a lot of young talent on this roster. It could be good, yeah. Look, this was a team that started 5 and 20 last year. They played about 500 basketball from December on. If they're healthy, throw Gary Harrison that mix as well, he's a good 3 and D player. If they're healthy, could they be a 500 team this year or better? You have to think organic improvements alone could push them above 500. Beyond the top 3 or 4 in the Eastern Conference, nobody else is a sure thing in the back half of it. I keep my eye on Orlando this year. I think Orlando with Jamal Mosley, who I think is a very, very good head coach, you've got the pieces there where if you see organic growth and good health, you could have a team that's competing for a 4 or 5 spot in the Eastern Conference. I really believe that's a team that could surprise a lot of people. I love this idea. I love this pick. Even though for years I've wanted to see Gary Harrison play for a contender again, I really like this Magic team. There were games, like you mentioned they started off slow, but I remember watching the Magic play the Warriors early last season. They needed buckets in the last two minutes of the game and they were already going to Boncaro against Draymond Green. That was awesome. He didn't win that matchup certainly every time, but the scoring potential is there. I think they're going to be a really interesting team. I'm interested to see what happens with Jalen Suggs. I do think he's become kind of a forgotten guy here with how good Wagner and Boncaro have been. But Suggs came in with the same amount of hype as his contemporaries in his draft class. Look at some of the signs there too. Last year in games decided by 5 points or less, they were 9 and 13. I told you I was just gobbling game notes when I was down there. They're a middle of the pack defensive team, which is not bad for a team that young. They're the 4th youngest team in the NBA. Middle of the pack defensive team. In games they actually defended by holding opponents under 100 points, they're 8-0. If they continue on that track where they're improving defensively, which I think they can, can they get in the top 10? Might be a stretch, but if they can get 11th, 12th in defensive efficiency? I think they were 26th in offensive efficiency. They're going to get better in that aspect with growth and health. I just think they're going to be surprising. They're going to have some more connectivity, they're going to play well. I saw some people out there suggesting Orlando should be a Damian Lillard trade target, or the Magic trade for Damian Lillard. I wouldn't do it because I think you could gouge for assets, but point guard with respect to Fultz is probably their greatest weakness at the moment. Plug Damian Lillard into that lineup with Harris beside him, Harris a very good defensive player. You've got Wagner, you've got Banchero, I'm forgetting somebody off the top of my head. Wendell Carter, who was a good rebounder. You're definitely a playoff team with that group, and who knows? If Lillard was a little bit younger and I was Orlando, I would go all in on something like that. But because he's 33, I wouldn't do it. It just goes to show how good I think Orlando can be. I just think they've got enormous potential to surprise the team. They made a 12-win improvement last year. They were a 22-win team the year before, they went to 34 this year. Could they get into the mid-40s this season? Yeah, I think they could. If they can stay healthy, that's a mid-40 win team. I'm so curious to see how Jamal Mosley handles. They've got more guards than I've ever seen on any team's roster. To me, I kept thinking, okay, they're going to make a deal here, they're going to do this. I think they've drafted four guards in the first round over the last two years, so it's just an interesting composition of guys. And then when you factor in that their two best players are not guards, but forwards that handle the ball a ton, it's like, man, everybody on your team can handle the ball, but also, do you have to streamline that a little bit? But there's so much talent there. If you look back to not last year, but the year before, I don't know how they finished the season, but I know for at least half, if not two-thirds of the season, their starting five had one of the best plus-minuses in the league. And it was that their bench had such a horrible net rating. But you could tell that the talent was there. Franz Wagner was so much better. I watched him a lot. He was a guy that went to Michigan. Not at the same time I did, but like I did. So I watched Michigan. It was pretty much the only college basketball I watched all the time, or the only team I watched consistently. And I never thought he would be as good as he was as a rookie. I didn't know that he would be that good five years down the line, let alone as a rookie, and then he continued to get better last year. They've got a lot of talent on that team. Gary Harris, it is really tempting to do that kind of small market, well, what are they going to do anyway sort of thing, where we just want to see these guys that are such good players go to a contender. But for all the guards they have on that team, and for all the talent they have, it makes sense to have a vet like him there to show these guys the way and to be a contributing member of that team. So they're very interesting, and I think that absolutely they could sneak into that conversation as kind of a back end. I'd be a little surprised if they were to climb up to four, but that would be the equivalent of what Sacramento essentially did last year, of just kind of surprising all of us. I'd love to see them make the playoffs this year. I think that they're really talented, and I think that once they get there, they should be there for a while, because they've got so many young guys on this team. My biggest concern is the learning curve. Well, it's health, first of all. They've got some guys that have been injured a lot over the years. Fultz at the top of that list, Gary Harris has been an eye on the lineup.

"Haring, I'll go to you first on this one, not to put you quite on the spot, but as training camp media day approaches, is there a storyline? Is there a thing that you're most interested in that maybe we haven't discussed much? Obviously, there are other teams and players in the world outside of Damian Lillard. What are you excited to maybe hear about, see some quotes about, talk about as training camp opens next week? Bruh, put James Harden on that podium now. Please. Please. Popcorn ready. Because I just want to hear him say, I repeat, I will not play for a team that is led by that man or whatever he said, as it related to Daryl Morey. This is a team that, again, as we've talked about on this pod a number of times, as Mannix has written a few times, this is a team that could win. It's conceivable that they could win. If you just took this roster, all context out the window, just do they have enough talent on this team to make something happen? We just watched Miami make it to the finals as an eighth seed, so absolutely Philly could do that. They have an MVP, granted, no one would say he's the best player in the world, but they have an MVP, a reigning MVP on that roster. They have an up-and-coming star who, if he were an all-star this year, it would not be shocking by any means. They've got a player that, yes, overpaid, but still a very good, I think most people would say a good fourth option on this team. And, by the way, they've got James Harden who, again, context aside, if you just push that aside for a moment, has shown, even in series where he's been just obliterated as far as public perception and everything else, that he's gone out and scored 40 multiple times. So they've got enough talent here. They have a new coach who, again, has won a championship. They're capable. I just think that we're looking at the outside factors and the craziness of what's going on there and saying that this looks nuts, so we're not expecting anything. But they could still win 50 games. I don't think it would be surprising if they did that. But who knows how James Harden will show up? Who knows what sort of effort he'll give? There's all the incentive in the world for him to give his best because it's a contract year for him. But who knows how this devolves or evolves or progresses or regresses? That's why I'm going to have my popcorn ready as Media Day is on the horizon because it could go either way. And I'm very curious to see where it goes, how it goes, how it's discussed, and on some level how it's going to manifest for the next few months. As much of a beating as Harden has taken, to your point, Chris, he averaged 20-10 last year. He led the NBA in assists. He shot 38% from 3. This is a still all-star level player with a backcourt mate that could be an all-star player. I hear nothing but good things out of the workouts for Tyrese Maxey this offseason. You've got Joel Embiid, who's just hitting 30, so he's in his prime. Contract year Tobias Harris, Pat Bev coming off the bench with some energy. They've got some depth there. I still think they're jockeying for second and third with Boston, but you're not going to convince me that team can't win. That's a team that if they get through the East, they can win a championship. They've got enough to beat Denver in a finals, the Clippers, the Suns, the Lakers, whoever comes out of the Western Conference. They've got enough. I'm with you. I want to see Harden on the podium to see what he says, to see if he's there, to see if he shows, all that stuff. Can I give mine now, Rowan, my storyline? Please, please. Can I become the first Orlando Magic stan of this podcast? I don't know that you'd be the first. I don't know that you'd be the first, but we haven't talked about it in the pod like that. I want to hear what you're saying now.

A highlight from Player Participation Policy & Team's We're Bullish On
"It's the Crossover Sports Illustrated NBA Show. Breaking down the latest news, rumors, and everything in between. Here's your hosts, Chris Mannix, Rohan Nadkadi, and Chris Arrington. This is the Crossover NBA Podcast. I'm Chris Mannix, joined for the first time in what feels like a long time my two colleagues over at Sports Illustrated, Chris Herring and Rohan Nadkadi. Guys, good to be back with you with the, what, three weeks, I guess, before official media days. I saw some postings, Rohan, as you shake your head. I saw some postings about media days being October 2nd. I guess that's the go -to day for most of the NBA teams, but we're inching right up on it. I just can't believe we're here. It feels like the season just ended. I'm excited. I just, I'm not mentally prepared for this. I can sense the excitement in your voice. I can say it's palatable. I can sense that excitement in your voice. All right, so on this episode, guys, I want to talk about, you know, teams that we're bullish on and teams that we might be a little bit bearish on. We're each going to pick a team that we're high on and we'll pick a team that we're low on. Before we get to that, though, we're recording this shortly after Adam Silver's post -board of governors media availability. And this media availability, the biggest storyline to come out of it was the NBA board of governors. They approved a new player participation policy, which is really a continuation in the NBA's war on load management and to a broader extent, their war on tanking. And a couple of the highlights of this new player participation policy, the policy is managed. It's rock teams have to manage their rosters to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game. Ensure that star players are available for all national television and NBA in -season tournament games. Another new wrinkle to the NBA calendar and maintain a balance to the number of one game absences for a star player in home and road games. Basically, this combined with the minimum threshold for a number in terms of number of games played for stars to be eligible for postseason awards. This is just another lever Chris Erring that the NBA is pulling to make sure that do whatever they can to make sure that players are as available as often as possible. How do you feel about the player participation policy, which is now permanently part of the NBA rules? Look, I think it goes a little bit further than I would have gone with it, frankly. I mean, I remember when the Spurs were, you know, doing this and sitting entire, you know, half their roster out, but it was the Spurs and there's a part of me that feels like they know what's best for them as far as their rest. Sometimes they have a lot of old players on their team just because of the sorts of guys that, you know, tend to gel with the way Popovic coaches them. If you want to do that and you have the ability to do it and still pace your team the way you want to, so be it. That's the point of the league. I understand that there's a money factor to it and everything else. And I understand the disappointment that fans feel. I've been in that boat where I've gone to games or taken my nephew to a game and somebody sitting out and it is frustrating. And I can only imagine how frustrating it is for people that only get to go to one game every few years or something like that. But it's also kind of the risk you run with a sport that relies on people's health. And so I am interested to see how it's going to work when you have guys that have stuff that they're trying to manage. The Clippers are always an interesting team like that where people have complained about the way they do stuff for years, but they also have a guy that is chronically injured. And so I'm curious to see how it will play and how it will actually look. But there's a part of me that feels like the real fix to this is just either shortening the season or lengthening the season and allowing the 82 games to be played over a longer span of time. I don't really love the idea that you're going to tell teams that they can't sit out, even multiple guys, if they want to or if they frankly feel like they need to, if there's data that's telling them that that is what would serve their team the best.

The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
Fresh update on "chris mannix" discussed on The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
"Learn more at ibm.com slash orchestrate. IBM. Let's create. Let's talk about the Heat a little bit because as Mannix mentioned earlier, they're kind of the only team involved. Mannix and I talked about this a month ago now maybe where I think we both are like the Heat kind of got to get off their ass a little bit here and can't act like the team with all the leverage. They can't act like the team that is less desperate for Damian Lillard, especially given how little movement they've had offseason. If the Heat don't acquire Damian Lillard, how much blame do they deserve for not kind of stepping up their offer or is it just do you guys think Portland never really liked what they had to give up in the first place? I think both can be true. It's very clear Portland never liked what Miami was offering. At the same time, Miami's had months to plus up that offer and beef up that offer and they haven't done it. All I've seen is, you know, Heat fans and some select members of, excuse me, Heat media, you know, kind of just, you know, imploring the trailblazers to just make a deal. It's just so much coping. So much coping going on. It's embarrassing. Portland, why don't you make a deal here? So I think there's blame on both sides and I understand why with Miami. Like, you know, Miami is still like everybody else. Miami's curious to see what happens with Giannis. Now, if Giannis decides to request the trade at some point during the year or even next season, Miami wants to have assets to make a run at him. But if you're the Heat and Jimmy Butler's in his mid-thirties and Bam Anabios in his prime, I don't know if you have the luxury of waiting and hoping that Giannis becomes available. And if he does, you have the assets to go and get him. I think you've got to operate. They'd have to trade Bam from Giannis. Like, there's no other way to get Giannis. More or less. I mean, I think other teams out there are going to have more appealing offers. I mean, the Knicks have been sitting there for, you know, over a year now saying, like, we're not doing anything until we figure out what's going on with Giannis. Like, all their assets are being kept in the pursuit of Giannis. Miami, I just don't think they're in the same position. That's the team that went to the finals. That's a team with a superstar at the back end of his prime. Like, you've got to operate as if you have a very short window. So, if Damian Lillard winds up going elsewhere, winds up staying in Portland, and Miami winds up blowing the season, a season where, you know, I don't know how many more seasons like Jimmy Butler had last year that he's going to have moving forward, that's kind of on them to me. I think if they really want Damian Lillard, and they think Lillard can be a difference maker, they've got to go get him. Because look at their depth chart right now. I mean, you've got, what, like, is Hiro going to start at point? I pulled up a second ago. You've got Hiro, I guess he's starting point guard for this team right now. Josh Richardson, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Love, Bam Adebayo. I mean, no disrespect to Richardson and Kevin Love, but you're talking about starting two guys on minimum contracts. Yeah, Love was out of the Cavs rotation last year. I mean, you know, you get Duncan Robinson off the bench, Caleb Martin is still there, Haywood Highsmith was okay. But, you know, on paper, that's a playing team at best. And I think there are some teams in the East that can, if their young players perform, they're going to be more competitive than people think. So, you know, I don't know, is Miami willing to risk this being a lost year? And if they are, like, how many more years, how many more lost years can Jimmy Butler take? Yeah, to be honest, I thought last year was going to be a bit of a lost year for the Heat with, again, last year they had a similar offseason. They didn't do much. It looked like that. And they were, like, two minutes away from it being a lost year when they were trailing late in the fourth quarter against Chicago in the second play-in game. And, you know, the Heat have been in this weird position where it's like, do we believe, did we lose guys from an eighth seed or did we lose guys from a finals team this offseason? You know what I mean? In terms of Gabe Vincent and Max Drusleving, you could either say, well, our team wasn't very good during the regular season. Or you could say, wait a second, those guys started every game on the way to the finals? I don't like the strategy. I've said from the start I don't like the strategy. I think the idea that, you know, Hero in a couple first-round picks is going to get it done is absurd. I think they overvalue Hero. I think people in Miami overvalue Hero, who is not a bad player, but he is a 20-point-per-game scorer at a time where it's never been easier to score 20 points in NBA history. More people are doing it than ever. The two-way skills are just more valued when it comes to playoff time. And I think if they had done a trade that was centered around, let's say, Lowry's expiring deal, Jovic, Hock as the two first-round picks they own and whatever picks they could get for Hero, I think something like that was always going to be their best bet. And it just sounds like they haven't been willing to do that. And I think that they do deserve a level of blame for it. Portland doesn't like their assets. That's on Miami to go out there and get the assets required. Especially when you have a guy saying, I only want to play in Miami. They missed out on Bradley Beal. They couldn't sign Kevin Durant as a free agent. Then they couldn't trade for him. Now you finally have a guy saying, I want to go only to your team. That's the situation where you have to get it done. If you think about Giannis and Embiid, for example, even if they say only Miami, at this point it's been proven that that's not enough to get a player to the Heat. So I don't know in what world the Heat think they'd have enough to win a bidding war for guys who their value is going to be even higher than Lillard. Giannis' value... By the way, Rowan, to bring it back to Lillard for a second, there are two GMs I can think of that don't care if Lillard doesn't want to be there. One is Danny Ainge, and the other would be Masayo Giri. If you go back to 2018, there was reporting around the time of the Kawhi Leonard trade that Kawhi Leonard has no interest in being a Toronto Raptor. Masayo Giri does not care. You have a contract, and you know what? You might like Toronto. You could learn to like it. It's very cosmopolitan, very international. It might grow on you. Either way, we don't care. You want to play for us, you're going to get paid. So I think that's interesting. That's what makes me believe there's fire to this Raptor stuff too, because Masayo's one of those GMs slash presidents that would be willing to do this without the approval of Danny Lillard. I believe it was Stephen A. Smith who said Toronto is special. I'll just let people Google that clip for themselves to see what he was talking about. I kind of understand the negotiating stance, like we're going to wait for another team to get involved. But now another team is involved. But now another team is involved. I don't know if they're going to step it up still. They were taking a spoiled approach toward this, I think. And I get it. They want to be careful with assets, particularly because they are trying to win right now with someone like Lillard. But they also would love to kind of keep a wandering eye for Giannis or Embiid or whoever else is going to come down the pipeline. Maybe not necessarily Embiid since they have Bam, but they want to keep an eye open toward whatever else might happen. That's a really difficult thing to do. And I think Chris hit the nail on the head. I've agreed with him more on this pod than anyone I can remember. Just from the standpoint of you've already got two guys that you're trying to build around, one of whom is kind of... I'll be honest with you. I'm surprised he's held up as well physically as he has already in Jimmy. I thought that the breakdown would have happened sooner than it will or sooner than it is from that standpoint anyway. So you've already kind of won that from that standpoint. They were one shot away from making it to three finals in four seasons or whatever it's been. You've already gotten as far as I imagine you're going to go if you don't make another move here. And you've got a player now saying, this is the only place I want to go. So I understand the idea of not wanting to give up more assets than you need to. I also can understand Portland looking at Tyler Herro like that Fyre Fest sandwich that they were trying to give up. They don't want it. That's not what they want. That's not what any team would want when they're not giving away Damian Littler, but trading him away. That's not going to satisfy the fan base. It's not going to help you win. They want something different than that. It's been on Miami for months now to go find something that would meet what Portland wants. We've all been saying for a while now that if other teams want to get seriously involved here and throw caution to the wind from the standpoint that someone like Lillard might not want to go there. There are other teams on that part of the country, just on the East Coast, that could certainly offer better deals. There are teams that made it pretty much just as far as Miami did that could essentially offer that. Whether it was Boston that we've talked about, Philly certainly could. Now whether they want to part ways with their young players to do that is a different question, but that's what, again, as Chris said, what makes Masai so interesting. Again, I don't think it makes sense for Toronto to do. There's too many question marks for me, but the Heat will deserve a ton of blame if they don't get them because I think you're just playing with fire at this point to not go get a player that so clearly wants to be there. When you're that close, and also not to mention you've lost a lot of talent this offseason. And so if you're not replenishing that through a star, then what are you doing? And all the times where it looked like you were about to take a step back and you kind of were really fortunate not to because Spoe is Spoe and because your players are just dogs, you can only play that card so many times. Also, as we talk about how much longer Jimmy Butler has, how much longer does Pat Riley have? He wants to win one more. He wants to make a splash. Then do it. I don't know how else to put it here. As you guys know, I'm from South Florida. I don't know if that's ever come out before on this podcast, but now everyone knows it. I've seen the chatter. I've been working on some preview stories, so I've talked to a lot of people. In some ways, this Finals run has maybe allowed the Heat to operate differently than they should because I think there's some prevailing notion down here. It's like, are you really going to doubt this team? Are you really going to doubt this team again? They just made the Finals. Are you really going to doubt that they can do it again? They made it as an eighth seed. I just think that line of thinking is incredibly short-sighted. I think Pat Riley, if you gave him a huge dose of truth serum, I'd like to think deep down he would say they've overachieved with Jimmy Butler. I think what he'd say publicly is these are the expectations you have when you acquire Star, but nobody had the Heat I think as successful as they've been over the last four years since they acquired Jimmy Butler. I think they've overachieved. I just don't think the strategy can be let's put pressure on Jimmy to play out of his mind for two months every year, which he's been able to do a couple of times now to his credit. Obviously, congratulations to him for that, but I just don't think that can be the strategy. Just get us into the playoffs, and then we'll see what happens in any given series because we have Jimmy and Spoh. We made the Finals, but they were life and death in the play-in. There are a couple of bad possessions away from losing to Atlanta. They're like an Alex Caruso missed three from being knocked out by Chicago in that game. Chicago was up three. Caruso took a big shot open on the wing. I agree. They're living on a razor's edge. The margins are very thin. Beyond that, it's not just making the Finals. If you actually want to win, you know that you need more. You know that you need more if you actually want to win. I don't think it's a good strategy, and maybe it is just Portland wants absolutely nothing to do with guys like Jovic and Hockes or whatever the case may be. The Heat, I think, for a long time should have been trying much harder to flip Tyra Hero into things that Portland would want. Instead, they're here now. "And Quigley had some moments. I mean, Berlanga was- We're not doing the Quigley stuff. Berlanga wasn't the beast that everyone thought. So now Berlanga has to prove once again that he is a beast and he does it against a former champion and a fighter like Munguia or a Munguia type. But we're going to have to see that beast again. You thought Quigley won 118-110. So I- I didn't think Quigley won. He just surprised everybody, including Berlanga. No, he didn't. All right. You know, another piece of intel I picked up over the last couple of weeks was Manny Pacquiao. And I've done some reporting on Pacquiao talking about going into the Olympics and trying to win a gold medal in 2024. There's been some reporting about Pacquiao fighting another exhibition against a kickboxer. One thing I heard over the last few days is that Pacquiao right now is actively looking for another professional fight. He's 44 years old. He has not fought since losing to Yordanis Ugas a couple of years ago. But I've been told that he wants back in in a professional fight. And the guy I've been told that he's looking at is Errol Spence Jr. Pacquiao, as you know, was at the Spence Crawford fight. And Pacquiao at that fight was telling people that he believes his style matches up well with Spence. He believes, even at this stage of his career, that he can beat Spence. Spence, of course, has reportedly activated his rematch clause with Terence Crawford. But if you think about it, Sergio, if Pacquiao really is going to come back, fighting Errol Spence is not the dumbest idea in the world, especially if the fight takes place at 154 pounds. The kind of fight that I think Pacquiao could lose and probably would lose, but not one at this point where he would get badly hurt. What do you think of the idea of Pacquiao returning to fight Errol Spence? I don't like fighters returning, great fighters. I mean, all time great fighters going back to the well for another chance at greatness. I mean, we've already seen Pacquiao get viciously knocked out. This is a man, a legend, an eighth division champion that has over 70 fights. He's already given three careers to everybody. What more can he give the sport? What more can fans expect from him? No, I don't want to see him come back. Even though it will be a calculated risk against a fighter like Spence, who is in the eyes of many damaged goods, he just got that beat down from Crawford. I mean, he had that brutal car accident, the inactivity in the past. Yeah, in the past, you would say, that's actually a decent idea. And Spence is not a mover. He has trouble with fighters that move laterally a little bit, pinning them down. I would say it was a good idea in the past. Not anymore, not at this stage, not when you already have political ambitions, you're raising a family, you have aspirations to do other stuff. Not to train, not to fight hard, not to go back and revisit. It's delusional, man, it's delusional. I don't like that idea at all. You know, the biggest obstacle, or at least one of the biggest obstacles in making a fight like this happen is that there isn't any money out there for it. I mean, both these guys are used to making pretty healthy purses, and I don't see any outlet network promoter out there willing to guarantee them the kind of money that they're used to getting, or they would expect to get to fight each other. But if there was, I'll put it to you this way, I'd probably be more interested at this point in seeing Pacquiao Spence than I am Crawford Spence, because I have the belief that Crawford Spence too goes a lot like Crawford Spence one or worse. I don't think an extra seven pounds is gonna help Errol Spence all that much. In fact, you can certainly argue it'll probably help Terrence Crawford just as much. And you know, we've talked about this a lot. I think Spence is a diminished version of the fighter we saw kind of rolling through the welterweight division before his car accident. A greatly diminished Pacquiao versus a diminished Spence, I think is more competitive, frankly. What do you get out of that? I mean- Not every fight needs to be a super fight. You're a sadist, man. I mean, if that's the word, you're indulging the punishment of others. Is that the word? It might be a bit strong. Is that the word? Because yeah, I mean, what do you get out of a fighter that's given everything to the sport and Pacquiao and someone who just got brutally beaten down like Spence? Oh, well, let them beat the rest of the pulp out of each other. No, man, that's how people get seriously hurt. And it happens to the greatest, man. The greatest die the hardest. Muhammad Ali, way past his prime. You know, after the Frazier fight, continued fighting. Sugar Ray Leonard continued coming back. Got beat down by Camacho, by Terry Norris. Oscar De La Hoya, you know, comes back, gets beaten down by Pacquiao. Happens to the greatest, man, because they won't learn until it finally, the nail hits the coffin. That's what made them great. The fact that they thought they can always, you know, continue fighting, continue beating the best, the best, the best. That's what makes them great. But not anymore. Not when you've already been stopped. That's not when you've already been, you know, to the top. Many times you, you defied odds, but you can't continue doing that. That's when you get hurt. I don't want to see it. Look, I'm kind of with you on, on Pacquiao coming back. I don't need to see it. He's never going to be able to compete at the highest level ever again. Certainly not at 154 and above, but if you're Harold Spence and that fight is even close to realistic, if that's really something that, that is being brought to your attention, I would jump on that. I would, because if you're Spence, the chance to fight Pacquiao would make a bunch of money and maybe regain some of your confidence as a fighter. I think there's a lot of value in that. Maybe a lot more value certainly than him going up and fighting some, you know, top 15, top 20 contender just to get a win under his belt. You get a win over Manny Pacquiao. Not only do you get some of your confidence back, but you also get a big payday out of it. Maybe not as big as you're scheduled to get against Crawford. Although I'd argue that the pay-per-view sales for Spence Crawford two won't touch Spence Crawford one, but you know, you get a pretty healthy payday to fight a guy that you should beat. A 44-year-old version of Manny Pacquiao would be an underdog against even this version of Errol Spence. So if I'm Errol Spence, Sergio, I would, if this is something that my advisors bring to me, I might consider reversing my decision on fighting Crawford right away and fighting Manny Pacquiao. Of course you do. You said the word value in the words of Oscar Wilde. Critics like yourself, Chris Mannix, know the value of everything and the cost of nothing. I mean, this is going to cost him blood. It's going to cost him years of his life, cost of his health. One fight can do that, man. One fight can change everything around. I know it sounds dramatic, but we've seen it happen all the time. You know, after that beat down, to come back with a great fighter like Pacquiao, I'm not saying things are going to go back with Spence, but how many times are you going to go through pain? I mean, look at that horrific car accident that went through that probably, you know, that is actually what beat him down worse than Crawford, but you know, let's not take anything away from Bud, but you know, you can't go through that. You can't put your body through that. And then to come back and try to do it again against one of the greatest fighters of our generation, you're just, you're asking for trouble. And I don't want to see it. I don't want to take part of it. And sadly, it's a lot of people like yourself that are interested. Masochist, that's another word. I love when you quote Oscar Wilde, you rarely get the quote right, and it never makes much sense. So I do appreciate when you do that.

"Just not a player that fits with the rebuilding model the Blazers are headed towards. So, if you move Jeremy Grant at some point, at least if you're prioritizing moving Jeremy Grant, yeah, Ananobi makes sense. He's still young enough that he fits into the long-term timeline of Anthony Simons, of Shaden Sharpe, of Scoot Henderson. I wouldn't blink at paying him, you know, big money because I think he's already an excellent two-way player who's only going to get better in the years to come. Maybe even more so with an enhanced role. I think it's more about, you know, getting off of Grant because I think their skill sets are somewhat redundant and allowing Ananobi to kind of fill that role. Got it. Yeah, I don't disagree. I just think it would be kind of a… Moving Grant is the key aspect there because that's a lot of money to commit to a roster next year that would still be in a rebuilding phase around Scoot. You'd have Simons is on a bigger contract. You'd have Ananobi. You'd have Grant theoretically. You still have Nurkic. Nurkic has not really been mentioned as part of the Raptors discussions. He's a guy that they maybe were looking to move off of. It would be an oddly expensive team for where Portland is right now. I'm Jonathan Strickland, host of the podcast Tech Stuff. Stick around for that conversation a little bit later in the show. At the top, I do want to touch on the news that broke on Sunday. Just touch on it because we're still missing a lot of information on what happened over in the UK with Brian McIntyre, the trainer for Terrence Crawford, the trainer for Chris Eubank. He was arrested on Sunday at the Manchester airport for possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. As we record this, he is still being held over in the UK. If you know anything about UK gun laws, it's pretty serious stuff. The UK has some of the most strictest gun laws in the world and there are minimum sentences for these gun laws. A lot going on with Brian McIntyre, the trainer for Terrence Crawford. We'll talk more about it as we get more information. Right now, all we know is that he's been arrested, he's being held. For his sake, we hope for the best for BOMAC to deal with that particular situation.

You get the show first before it comes out on the podcast feed. We've got a short show for you today. Technically speaking, I'm on vacation for the next couple of weeks, but it was an interesting weekend in Boxing. Heavyweight box, want to jump on and talk about that. Next week, I taped a podcast with a very interesting figure in boxing. Someone you know, someone you've seen a lot of, but maybe you do not know this person's story. So it'll be a great episode next week to hear my conversation with that individual. This week, I've got my good friend from across the pond, Gareth A. Davies, The Telegraph. You see him on TalkSport, hear him on TalkSport. Does a great job on all platforms over in the UK. And he was ringside in London, O2 Arena, when Anthony Joshua put down Robert Helenius in the seventh round of that fight. Gareth, that is the topic I want to talk about today. The Anthony Joshua win this past weekend. So let's just start right from the top. Give me your overall assess, maybe even an overall grade for Anthony Joshua's win over Robert Helenius. Well, I'm going to grade your introduction first of all. Because our manic machinations with manics, who's a couple of things, right? I've got to pick the bones out of these, technically on holiday. You're either on holiday or you're not. I guess I'm not in the moment. In the moment, I'm not on holiday. In about an hour and a half, I'm back on holiday. How about that? You're on holiday but working and it happens to the best of us. And there's nothing wrong with that. And I forgive everyone that you've left at the dinner table right now or drinking their Beaujolais. I'll rejoin them. I'll rejoin them very shortly. Good, good. I hope you're not cooking, that's all. No, I'm not. And secondly, that was a horrible tease of who it might be next week. Horrible? Well, no, I mean, I'm like monstrous. I often use a monstrosity, often used as a kind of positive, not a pejorative. And come on, I can't concentrate on my question until you tell us who is joining you next week. I can't but I tell you, you as someone that is a veteran of the boxing industry, you probably know pieces of this man's story, but he is a very visible figure in boxing and someone I don't think people have the full scope of his story. And we sat down for about 40 minutes recently and talked about it. So it'll be one to look forward to, I think. I found it very interesting.

Here's your hosts, Chris Mannix and Rohan Nagraini. This is the Crossover NBA Podcast. I'm Chris Mannix, joined this week by Rohan Nagraini for a mini podcast. They're both powering down a little bit, the month of August, vacation, whatnot, getting ready for training camps to open in September. But we did have some news in the NBA. Some, I don't know what to call this news. Some powerful words, some powerful, a powerful statement from one James Harden, who was over on a promotional tour over in China when he said this. Darryl Maury is a liar, and I will never be a part of the organization that he's a part of. Let me say that again. Darryl Maury is a liar, and I will never be a part of the organization that he's a part of. So Rohan, putting on a shelf for a minute the interesting location of James Harden's comics, which took place in China. Playing to his crowd. Playing to his crowd. China, of course, where Darryl Maury is not the most popular figure because of an earlier tweet years ago now about Hong Kong. Putting that aside for a moment, what did you make of James Harden choosing mid -August on a promotional tour in China to reveal at least a portion of why he no longer wants to play in Philadelphia? It's pretty incredible. Chris, you've been doing this longer than I have. Every time I think we've kind of seen everything when it comes to trade requests, like we were talking earlier, like what Damian Lillard doing this summer, pretty aggressive, his agent at least kind of publicly telling the Miami Herald, I believe, like, Damian really only wants to go to Miami. That was taking on a life of its own. This is really shocking to me on so many levels, only because I think Darryl Maury is probably the biggest James Harden fan, or at least seemed to be the biggest James Harden fan left in the NBA. He's kind of been James' biggest champion over the years. That to see those two have their relationship end up here is pretty shocking to me.

As I've often said, you guys are the best audience in all of combat sports. Those that subscribe, that rate, that review. I thank you. It's the best way to help us grow this show. So it has been a weirdly busy week in boxing. Came into the prep for the show thinking we'd talk about the Jake Paul, Nate Diaz fight. Talk about the Valdez, Navarrete fight. I'm going to do all that. Corey Eardman, BoxingScene .com. He's going to join me to run through all the news of the week in boxing. But in the last couple of days, there have been some developments in the heavyweight division. Dillion White, former world title challenger. He is out of a scheduled fight against Anthony Joshua, testing positive for a banned substance. In his place, Robert Heleneus, another former world title challenger who will step in and face AJ on short notice. Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing. He's going to join me to discuss everything that's happened over the last few days as it relates to AJ and Dillion White. But I want to weigh in on this myself before we get to Corey and to Eddie. Look, I don't want to talk too much about what happened with Dillion White. Largely because I don't know enough. I don't know what substance Dillion White tested positive for. I don't know the amount of the substance in his system. I don't know any reasoning or excuses Dillion White might have for testing positive. So I want to put that on a shelf for a moment and just talk about the replacement. And that is Robert Heleneus. Now, it's not a great fight. Let's be real about that. Robert Heleneus, he's old. He's washed up.

All right. Lot to get into this week. At a busy weekend in boxing last weekend to my guest keep idex surprise, I made an appearance at a non zone fight last weekend. I was at Mazda Square Garden for the Teófimo López win over sandor Martin. He is in Las Vegas for the Martin river fight, which will take place on showtime. A very good fight, although I'm curious to see how it does in terms of television ratings. This is a fight that, you know, too young ish, you know, would be contenders going at it. I'm very interested in that fight this weekend. Talk about that and much more. Let's bring in Keith edict. Out in Las Vegas, his home away from home is favorite place to be on earth, Keith edict is here. What's up, Keith? We're just what's going on. It is my home away from home, so a little less time here this year overall than in the past, but still probably about 40 days when it's all said and done. Yeah, familiar with Las Vegas for sure. And listen, whenever you show up to a fight, it's an honor to have you at race, but Saturday night was a rare treat, you know? Yes, to see my second fight for Sandra Martina's many years and I'm not entirely sure I need to see a third. We'll get into that a little later on in the show. We're going to get into Martin Rivera terrific fight that's going to air on showtime this weekend. But I do want to look back at a couple of things. Let's start with Terrence Crawford. Number one pound for pound on my list, top three, at least on virtually everybody else's. He returns after a 13 month layoff and stops David Evans in the 6th round. That fight went largely as I expected, you know, aven is not bad.

Ali Oladipo, a broadcaster with the zone. There's a lot of other media over in the UK. He's going to join me. Eddie Hearn, the promoter of this event, he's going to join me to run through a whole bunch of topics. So we've got a lot to get to on this show. But I did want to start off the top. By bringing attention to something I saw last week. Last week, on the undercard of the show headlined by William zapata and JoJo Diaz, you had a super bantamweight fight between two undefeated prospects. Hector Valdez, who was the golden boy promoted prospect, and max or nelas, who is a free agent prospect. Also undefeated, both 15 and O, they fought in the first fight of that telecast. And look, I'm not going to sit here and say it was a great fight, but this was a fight that max or Nas clearly won. He controlled the ring with his movement. He landed more punches, his combination punching was effective. The eyeball test just told you that he won the fight. Yet at the end of the fight, two of the three judges scored the fight for Valdez 97 to 93. They effectively gave Hector Valdez 7 of the ten rounds. That's lunacy. We're going to name these judges too.

"Multiple times in recent years. How do you think he let's assume for the fact that fury is not retired? And is going to take that fight one way or the other. How do you see that matchup? So I would still pick fury, but I'm with you that I can't count out a guy with Alexander usic skill level. You know, he's too he's too skilled, but he's also too complicated. And one of the things that I think played into this fight and every fight for Alexander usic. If you're preparing for him, what do you do? Okay, you fly in 8 southpaws as Anthony Joshua did. But how many of those southpaws could even do 20% of what Alexandra can do in the ring? How can you replicate this guy? So would I pick Tyson Fury? Yes, because the physical advantages are so massive and I think that he is also a lot more sure of his offense, both moving backwards and moving forwards than Anthony Joshua is, but what I definitively count out is no, because you just can't prepare for this guy. Obviously I fought Manny Pacquiao. And I always say that the hardest part of preparing for Pacquiao is preparing for Pacquiao because finding someone who's spars like Manny Pacquiao is impossible. He literally does everything wrong. He just makes it work. Oh, it's not that way. It does everything right. But no one does it in the way with the, I guess the word is the pizzazz, the way he does. I mean, he's doing everything right. He's doing everything textbook, but it's the way that he puts it together. It's the way the recipe works, that creates a masterpiece every time. I think I might have wrote in my story prior to the fight. I think the closest you could get to a facsimile of us is if you inflated a version of a silly lomachenko. That's the only guy in because of course they're under the same learning tree under lomachenko's father, except given power. Right, the only guy that would do the certain things, the way that usak does. There's just no one else that could replicate that or even come close. One thing fury will do in that fight is something Joshua is not really capable of doing and certainly doesn't do. And that's lean. Operates like a real heavyweight. He will lean that entire 6 foot 9, 275 pound frame on you, and he will SAP the strength out of you. That is how he will find a way to slow down Alex the news. Don't get me wrong, I want to see that fight. I'd love to see it undisputed champion, the heavyweight division. That's a dreadful fight. I'm sorry. It is a dreadful dreadful fight. We have just done 24 rounds of Joshua news. Those were largely dreadful rounds. They were like, except for the 9th round of this fight, those were any of the tenth minus took over. A couple rounds here or there, it was largely clinical. And that's how we seek fights. Like he's not going to go outside of his comfort zone. He's not going to become, you know, Derek Chisora, alpha sudden. He's going to fight the way he wants to fight. I disagree. I like these fights. I've really enjoyed using Joshua. I like technical high level boxes. I love that stuff, because there's so many nuances. And you're going to love fury. No, I'm not going to get very physical and fury does a lot of weird things in there. Like you said, leaning. I mean, what he did to wilder in that third by just being so fit or the second fight. So physical. I mean, to do that to a guy who's two 20 and not 6 foot 7 or 6 foot 8 or whatever. Is us going to have to jump to hit him in the head? 6 9 is no joke. You know what I find interesting about the possibility of furiosa is fury traditionally leading up to his fights. I think he either needs or likes to create an enemy. And there's nothing like adversarial at all about Alexander usyk. You know, a guy who's in the midst of war back home, who's a pretty jovial guy. What is the motivation for fury other than just boxing? And I don't know. Do I think that fury will fight again? Yes, but I think there needs to be a particular motivation for him. And I think it kind of needs to be a bit personal. I don't know that he has that with us now. Maybe after user said his name, maybe he can conjure this up, but right now I'm just not certain. That's actually a pretty common theme for fighters is creating an enemy, whether self perceived or made up or not. I know a lot of guys in the gym that when they're fighting a guy, a lot of times they attack the press. We hate you guys because it gives us a reason to be mad at something because we're mad at everything. And we have to fight. List of people that hate me is longer than this, I don't know, he goes around the door. I like a crisis. But a lot of fighters do that. That's a really, really good point, Corey. Jamal trial is my best friend. I don't know what you guys are talking. By the way, as we are recording this Tyson Fury, took to Instagram and said quote, I will annihilate both of them on the same night. Get your fucking checkbook out because the gypsy king is here to stay forever. Tyson Fury is back to water money. Well, first of all, it was a retired. Yes. No, I'm coming out and I'm fighting for free. No no, I want half a Billy to fight against Anthony Joshua or Alexander. He's a fighter man. With a new trainer with Isaac mowing steam there. That's his trainer. I wish I would have known this before I declared the winner of this fight like the true heavyweight champion on the air, but what are you supposed to do? How am I? Oh, come on. You've never believed this guy. Actually retired. It's going to happen. Probably late this year, early next year, defending where they do it. Eddie Hearn, I don't think is going to be involved in that fight because it's free and clear. Now, as a fighter. But top rank, Frank Warren, they'll get a deal done. Everything a bunch of money. I will get an undisputed heavyweight champ. Lastly, Anthony Joshua, 32 years old, coming off back to back losses, three losses, Chris in his last 5 fights. Where does he go from here? I think he has to rebuild. He's got to go back home on the local European British circuit. And get those wins back at his confidence back. And honestly, I don't think Tyson Fury fights out of the question. And it's a fight that is just very enticing. It's very enticing for a lot of reasons. I think it's a great fight. I think the fans are really love it. I think it will make a lot of money. I think he can get back to that relatively quickly if they match him up right and he can get a couple of good wins, especially knockouts under his belt in the next year or so. I agree. I don't think that the fury fight is out of the question at all. Because I think that that is big enough in stature where Joshua, if he beats fury, then suddenly he's a heavyweight champion again, right? Then maybe you run it back with us, you can do whatever. If it's not the fury fight, I don't see Joshua. If I had to predict, I don't think that Joshua will take just kind of tune up rebuilding fights. What I would see in listening to Anthony Joshua speaking a particularly in the build up to this fight, I see Anthony Joshua really starting that next chapter of his life. He's got a pile of money. I see him more meaningfully kind of leaning into his humanitarian efforts into athlete management. And I think that he'll spend some time with that and then once time passes, then he can market AJ is back, but I just, I don't see, with this roadblock at the top of the division that is usyk, I don't see him wanting to fight someone kind of beneath him. I think how he lost opened the door for a comeback. If he had been knocked out by yusuke, that would have been tough to come back from. But if he just gets out boxed by a pound for pound great, he said, look, I just could not box the guy. I'm not that level of fighter. I'm still great, but I'm not that level of pure boxer. I think the door is now open for that. And look, I do think fury no sick face off first. But Joshua, look, to Chris's point, you can go on that European circuit. You can fight fringy heavyweights two times and 6 months. Your arm now with this new disowned deal, it's a global day. It's going to pay you a lot of money. No matter who you fight, and you can go back to the UK and do that. And look, we know unboxing. You get two fights in a row, wins in a row. You're back. You're back into the mix. What have you done for me lately? That's boxing. Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder still out there. Yeah. Like delta wilder is going to fight in October, a fight he theoretically, if you still Deontay Wilder should win, he gets a win, maybe gets another win. All of a sudden, while there gets Joshua, is a massive fight in the UK, UK, or the U.S.. Maybe Joshua comes back to the U.S. and tries to find a way to avenge his last appearance on U.S. soil. It's funny to think about how little the heavyweight landscape will change with all of this. It's all going to be the same guys. Yeah. It's crazy. Last thing for you. Usic, Joshua mentioned this about usic and we talked a little bit Eddie here and I think said pound for pound number one. Corey is usic pound for pound number one after winning this fight. He's either number one or number two and I wouldn't disagree with you saying either usic or in a way who you go in a way at number one. Yeah, probably. How was that bud Crawford number one? But. I don't know. I don't know. In a way in usic to me, jump off the screen as special operators in a way, not but Crawford doesn't. But I think his relative inactivity has allowed for these two guys to be in my memory and to do it more and more and more often, right? Well, I mean, I think I have the November as long as this Crawford spends fights happens. That's going to change this all. You think Robert Spencer is going to happen. I am boxing fan first. First and foremost. City of weight in the wings. I got to get my paycheck. I have to think about it. It's like being number one. But I'm not sure about that. But being undisputed Cruiserweight, beating Tony bellew after bell you stop David hay and back to back fights. Moving up to heavyweight, beating just sore average fight, and then outboxing heavyweight champion over two fights. Top three at a minimum, probably top two on my list and then oh, you love in a way. Maybe I'll move my list in a way back up my list. Anyway, he's a bad way to destroy down there was mean. I called that fight live. I think there's such a good guy. I thought that's like two. And the moment that, you know what moment that jumps out at me, I think it was the maloney fight and it was on ESPN and ward and Bradley were on commentary. "Will be in the fall Hall of Fame. He just probably won't be there for a first down to pick, but I think I think, you know, he'll be voted in the banks of someday, especially for the guy that doesn't have love for the sport. And he's still doing great things. Yeah. And actually, it blew my mind that Bradley isn't in yet. He probably should be in. So yes, Bradley, we go in ahead of them. Ivanka Calderon, you can still make a case Joel castle, mayor, Chico Corrales, there's quite a few names. We also need to have a separate conversation, Jacob. Yes, we do how fame and why there needs to be three every single year. Exactly how that conversation as well. One. That's gonna start leading to guys that get in, that don't belong. In that Hall of Fame. But that's another podcast. All right, I wanna finish with Danny Garcia, the two division world champion who is back on July 30th at a 154 pounds, making his debut at a 154 pounds. He has not fought since December of 2020, Ben really an active, not really been on the radar since then. Here's Danny Garcia about making his jump to one 54. Well, you know, like I said, I like the fire champions, even like Tony Harrison. It'll be a great fight for me. You know, he's been around for a while. He's a former champion, so I feel like he earned his stripes and, you know, that would be a great fight in the future. Anybody that wants to do four. Laura's called me out. I heard him call me out, so I think that I think he has a belt at middleweight. So we can do that fight. Or any of the champions. Well, there's only one champion where Charles. So whoever, my dream is to be a three division champion. So in order to be a champion, you got to fight and beat the best. So there's really no secret to it. All right, jamel, I'll put it to you. Can Danny Garcia be a player at a 154 pounds? Yeah. Especially honestly, I would say that based off of a circle who is with. If he's right now, he's with the PVC banner right now, all those belts are tied, but then PVC river being honest. Shout out to John Jamil Charlotte. But I believe with him coming in now, obviously getting his feet wet within the division. We all have seen it. He probably need one, maybe two wins before he, you know, he gets a shot at whoever, you know, allows him to fight over there and jamel has all the belts or so, but I believe, you know, long she just acted again and just, you know, puts on a win or two. I think they'll give them a good give him a shot. And that just had the Apple right over there. We've all seen it. It's like round Robin. Yeah, Jake, I don't know what we're going to learn against Jose Benavidez. On July 30th, that's a fight that Garcia, if he's close to his best, should win, but he's an interesting name, at least at one 54, and he sure sounds like a guy that's looking to make the big fight. And he's not just targeting Charlotte. He's mentioned Tony Harrison as someone he'd be willing to fight. That's an excellent fight. He's mentioned eris landy Lara..

"Celtics warriors go 7, I'm going to fly to San Francisco on Sunday morning. Ah, look at you. This is two live non disowned boxing events that I'm going to see Chris mannix at less than a month. It is a miracle. That's right. I was at tank Davis, roly Romero, archer better BF Joe Smith, who knows. Maybe I'll show up at like a club show in South Florida at some point. Just popping in, left and right, ready to go. Maybe I'll go up to California and see chop chop corley back in action. I think he's like 73 and getting ready to fight at welterweight. Devin Alexander. I've never Alexander, I think. It's like it's 2004, you know? Somebody's going to stop chop chop corley from fighting. Crazy. Stop. I don't care. I don't care if he's fighting Devin Alexander B needs to stop fighting. All right, lot to get into with you, Keith and we are going to talk about better be of Smith, which is a fantastic fight. You know, must see TV for as long as it lasts. But I want to look back to a couple of fights we saw this past weekend. In New York City, you had Edgar berlanga winning a decision against Roma and gulo. He won decisively on the scorecards, but it was a fourth straight opponent that went the distance with Edgar berlanga, who has not looked like the power punching potential star that we saw for his first 16 fights when he picked up all those first round knockouts. What did you think of Berlin's performance, which included a Mike Tyson esque bite of the shoulder of Roma Romero gulo that could have gotten him disqualified if the referee had seen it the way the transpired. Yeah, and I think the only reason he wasn't admonished during the fight Chris was because Ricky Gonzalez, the referee did not see him do it, where he was positioned. He was trying to separate them and he didn't see berlanga try to bite him. Or he would have I'm assuming he would have taken a point away from him at that point. I mean, how could you not, really? It's such a rare occurrence. I think that's going to draw a suspension and or a fine probably a suspension and a fine. From the New York State Athletic Commission and rightfully so. So Berlin won't be able to fight in New York probably for about 6 months if I had to guess. The performance itself, I thought the fight was closer than they had it on the scorecards, Chris, they had it. I think it was 99 91 on two scorecards and 99 92 on the other. I thought it was a closer fight than that. I had it 96 94 for balenciaga at ringside, you know, sometimes at ringside, you get a different look than you get on television, maybe it was a little wider on TV, but I didn't think that he won, but I wasn't all that surprised that he didn't knock out Alexis and gulo because angulo, while he's been stopped once by David Benavidez. It wasn't a clean knockout. The fight was stopped after it was a very one sided fight that was stopped after the tenth round. It wasn't a situation where he got blasted out of there by Benavidez or knocked down several times or anything. So he's a pretty durable guy. So I'm not really surprised that he went the distance. And he's a pretty good even though he's 38 years old. He's a pretty big puncher. So I think berlanga had to be careful with him to some extent. He worked with a new trainer for the first time and Juan de Leon. I think his conditioning was better because he seemed to be more active in the later rounds and more willing to box in the late rounds than he was against Steve rolls, who's a much lesser puncher. And I think a lot of the criticism from the rolls fight is that he didn't try to get Steve rolls out of there in the later rounds. I think he had a little more, a little better conditioning in this fight. What I would say, Chris about berlanga is I think because he knocked out his first 16 opponents in the first round. Or maybe some unrealistic expectations attached to his name. And that's going to come when you have a lot of hype. I mean, that's kind of happened. So while he's not as good as maybe people were trying to make him out to be when he knocked out 16 guys in the first round of a row, he's not as bad maybe as people are making it seem to be at this point either. Yeah, that's a good way to put it. You know, because now the tide is completely turned against him. And people are saying, oh, well, you can't knock out Steve rolls, you go the distance with angulo. Maybe you're not this heavily high prospect. They're not as good as this heavily high prospect that was coming up the ranks. When the reality is, he's winning these fights by wide decisions. He beats up Steve roles. He does get knocked down against close, two fights earlier, but he got up to win that fight rather convincingly. So it's not like he's in danger of losing many of these fights, but maybe he's not maybe he's not the kind of puncher we thought he was going to be. Maybe we kind of thought he was going to be a Benavidez like puncher or a better be of like puncher in his weight class. I'm not sure he's that or ever going to be that. And I guess my take on the future of Berlin is like they talk a lot about the Jesse Hart fight, it's been discussed for over a year. I really like that fight for Berlin. It's kind of a sink or swim type of fight. I mean, Jesse Hart's only lost at the highest level, zerda Ramirez Joe Smith. He's not great by any stretch, but if Jesse Hart can make one 68, I'd make that fight and see what Berlin has got. What do you think of a fight with Jesse Hart? I know that's a fight that top rank is very interested in making. They wanted to make it for this past Saturday night. They wanted to make it for March 19th. I mean, they've been trying to make that fight for a while. Top rank used to be Jesse Hart's promoter, of course, bob arum has an affection for Jesse Hart because he cyclone Hart's son. And they work with him for a long time. And his losses are respectable losses to two points losses to Alberto Ramirez and to Joe Smith, who later became the wbo light heavyweight champion. So there's no shame in the losses on Jesse arts record. Jesse Hart, it's a back end of the top 15 type of contender, probably. And if you're Edgar berle and you can't beat Jesse Hart, well then where are you going, really? I mean, so that's a reasonable test for him to take. I've been led to believe that that will not be the next fight for Edgar berle, although it's a fight that I know top rank wants. We'll have to see how it plays out here over the next few months because he won't fight until December at the earliest because as I mentioned earlier, Chris, he's probably going to be suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission for 6 months. He could potentially fight in Puerto Rico maybe in December. But maybe he doesn't fight until the beginning of 2023. So you want to see him take these incremental steps up in opponents, but at this point, Edgar berlinger is, I guess, you know, a back end of the top 15 type of contender, I guess. I mean, he's not certainly not David Benavidez or fighter anywhere near on that level. And I think, you know, his handlers realized that and they want to be careful when moving him forward. There's some push and pull, I guess, or a tug of war, so to speak with top rank in terms of how quickly they step him up to the level of opponents at top rank wants to see him fight. And I think that's what we'll see play out over the next few months. Yeah, I think it's time. And you're not putting him in with David Benavidez. You're putting me in with Jesse Hart. And Jesse Hart is a good fighter, but not some superpower puncher. He's awkward. I think that's the fight where we see it berlenga is ready for top level opponents. At some point he's going to have to face a Jesse Hart, whether it's next fight, the fight after that, he's got to get in the ring with somebody either heart or of that ilk. So whoever's against it, berlanga is manager Keith Conley is training team. I understand maybe you want to get a second fight with your new trainer to continue to develop chemistry with him, but it's time Frederick blanket to step up and take a legitimate fight or legitimate top 15 top 20 type of opponent. Also on Saturday Keith, we had Jaime mongeau beating up on the latest over matched opponent that has been put in front of Jaime McGee. Jimmy Kelly fought well for four rounds. I thought he kind of confused. Confused mongeau, tagged him a few times, but then mongeau turned on the jets in the 5th round, not Jimmy Kelly down three times and eventually the fight was waved off. I don't even want to talk about the fight itself, Keith.

"When the olympics start will be the most talented team in tokyo. Hands down no question. Most talented team in tokyo with the roster that they have but this is like a five alarm fire right now howard. This loss to nigeria. I don't care if they win the rest of these pre olympic games which will take place through next sunday. This has to make you nervous if you're a fan of the team because not only is it this. The loss to nigeria. But you go back two years ago at the world championships where you had a us team. That was good. Didn't have probably better team now than they were back in two thousand nineteen but all nba players. They finished seventh. They've been seventh at the world championships. You have the seventh-place finish the loss of nigeria. How concerned are you howard beck about. Usa basketball. It's just an exhibition game. Chris oh no no. It's not just an exhibition game. Stop this team was thrown together over the last however many weeks they had what like three practices. I think i'll ever. Us team is thrown together. What are you talking about. There's no team. There's no no mid season practices for usa basketball. No but the nigerian team has been practicing. What i'm saying is some of the play in the nba though wants win the nba nba. A few of them play in the nba but that team has had time together more so than the team. Sorry brown coaching. that team. That i missed was that a facsimile of mike brown on the bench all season long. What what are we talking about. The warriors have been out for like two months kris k. Okay so two months. that's what matters. That's that's the number three three practices. Also they're still missing. I believe at least three guys because they're playing in the finals right now. Booker middleton chris paul get it. Yes not chris. Ball's not playing a holiday with the the what holland is your holiday. Those those guys will matter especially given that middleton and holiday are to the better perimeter defenders that that team. Usa has and if you look at the rest of team usa's roster. I don't see a ton of great defenders. There there are a few. I think those three guys by the way are going to be exhausted by the time they get to. They may well be. They may will be so. We're going to judge them. Judging when their whole judge when the games matter to strange to me like we don't judge nba teams based on the preseason but we judge team usa based on these exhibition games. That they do going into international competition. I feel like it's thirty. One point favorites. Why why is there betting line on a freaking exhibition better training but a little league baseball. Now country degenerates damn right. I didn't mean chris i'm with. Let's go monday. Nigeria money line. I just. I can't get too excited about this. If they lose the rest of the exhibitions does that mean something. Yeah that might be alarming if they're if they're still struggling to find some cohesion. That could be alarming. But i mean the talent is obviously their talent alone doesn't win on the international stage in style of game is different team ball matters. Shooting matters like yeah. There's a bunch of budget stuff that comes into play. But i i find the panic over this loss or at least the outcry to be a little bit much. So you don't take into account the seventh-place finish in two thousand nineteen. I mean that to me. It's the it's not just as game. The totality of it right. Like and i don't know howard like so in the early two thousands the world kind of caught up to the us ninety to ninety six thousand us. Gold maps then comes the two thousand two world championships in indianapolis and that's seven. The place finish was one of the worst worst outcomes in at least recent usa history. They got it together after that. They hired jerry colangelo. They bringing mike chef ski. They get their act together. Two thousand six two thousand eight then. They run off. Three consecutive years are three consecutive cycles of gold. Medals is argon. Made that like the world's caught up again that somewhere along the way and the last four or five years. The rest of the world has once again caught up usa basketball. I'm trying to understand this. I mean that's close games in those olympics cycles. No question about it. But i can't imagine the oh eight. Twelve or sixteen team losing nigeria. I can't exhibition or otherwise. I can't see it happening. No team and the and the one that followed it were built around like lebron koby. Carmelo enjoying wait. I mean that that groups at another level like as good as this group is that we're seeing right now as talented as they are after k. D. tatum's really good damian. Lillard is great. I mean come arbit- tatum. Bill lillard auto bio levin. Draymond dream ends up there in years but one has won some things. Jeremy grant jeremy grant zach living out of like. These are guys who have done anything in the nba yet. But they're all stars most they're they're also but are they to level of lebron kobe now but do you think is that what you're saying then is that what you're saying to be at the level you need to have like i'm saying the crop to win. I'm saying that if we're going to start comparing the twenty twenty one team to the twenty eight a two thousand eight two thousand twelve teams there is. There is not an equivalent right now. Lebron kobe laurent cobaine weight. And plus what we what. We called olympic. Mellow like carmelo. Didn't have the success in the nba. That some of his teammates did but carmelo in terms of talent level and certainly has resume like that group was at a whole other level. That group is a different level than jason. Tatum bam outta bios. Zach levine. Okay so not saying that you necessarily should have to have that level of time firepower to win an exhibition game against nigeria. Or anybody else. But i am saying comparing usa to itself different iterations of team usa. This one is not that one. This is not as dominant group as the ones we saw in eight and two thousand twelve. It just isn't what do you do like. What's the solution here. Like i mean i jerry. Colangelo deserves an enormous amount of credit for rebuilding that program when it was at. Its nadir mitra chefs. He comes in enormous amount of credit for what they did. But as we sit here in twenty twenty one like it's almost to me howard like the usa basketball rebuilding. The program became cool. Like lebron wanted to do it. Chris paul like dwayne wade. These guys wanted to do it and then they did it. And i think playing for usa basketball didn't become quite as cool as it was fifteen years ago. Like is that what has to happen like does not need to have like a fifth place finish in tokyo for all of a sudden the next generation of a-list stars wherever that may be in two thousand twenty four to come back into the mix and is that the only way this team can win. I mean i think we need to pay attention to the overall context like obviously one. These olympics were supposed to happen a year ago. They're delayed a year because of covid got durant out of it though like that right. It's questionable whether these the olympic should be happening at all still but along the way because of these back to back brutal seasons and everything else like team. Usa doesn't have james harden right now. Doesn't have anthony davis because of the injury doesn't have steph curry doesn't have kyrie irving doesn't have lebron kawai again. If your argument is that the second or third tier it sounds like sounds like insulting. Somehow but if you're saying that the next wave believe after those guys should still be good enough to dominate on the world stage. Maybe but if the point is that the team as best are they still. Are they still able to win. Gold fairly easily. Your probably but a bunch of them aren't on this team right now because of injuries and just the stress of the last year or two so this this is not necessarily representative of the best of the best right now. It just isn't and yes. They should still be good enough to win. Yes the world has caught up to some extent. No the the group that at nigeria's put it put out there last week. Does not leap off the page improbably. Us should've still want it. But again i exhibition game after like three practices. Let's see what happens with the rest of this. This schedule out brought mellow back. I mean he's not what he was four years ago. Eight years ago twelve years ago but the guy knows how to play international basketball. He might have sat. maybe. I guess. I didn't really. I assume that he just want to keep. He didn't kind of like four formerly re retire from the olympics. But it'd be pretty much says like i'm done like lebron kinda did to get talked into it. I feel like. I don't know if i was if i was the usa team would try really hard to get carmelo blake because his style. Whatever it is to the nba is perfect for the national basketball. He's a really good or national basketball player. On this subject damian lillard. He spoke for the first time. Since the hiring of chauncey billips. Only listen to what little had to say about his future in portland. I'm prepared to go in and do my job every year. Like hopefully we make strides over direction and could become a better team a new coach notice. That's where i am. What soured it sounds like. Lillard is at least nominally on board with going back to the blazers. But if i'm a team out there with assets. I don't listen to that response and say well it's over damian. Lillard is back on the same page with the portland trailblazers. If i'm a team with assets i hold onto those assets because it feels to me like the blazers might be one like sixteen to start from blowing that whole thing up with louis mccollum on the way out the door so get the sense now. That seems more likely than not that damian lillard at blazers training camp. He's in ablaze uniform. He starts the season with the portland trailblazers. But if it doesn't work with chauncey billips early and you get close that trade deadline. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see portland decide. Look we've got a. We've got to do something here and opened the door for damian lillard trade. What do you think. I think that nothing has changed. I think that his remarks last week because he sounded a little bit lukewarm. Or just you know you hear one of two things. Well you want to hear one thing if you're a portland trail blazers fan or if you're just looking for any indication that lillard is all in your you want to hear him say listen. I know things are rough right now. But i'm all in you know this is. This is where. I want to be you to repeat all the usual talking points that you hear from players in his position and that we've heard from bradley beal that we used to hear from james harden houston. Which is a win in phil in city fill in the blank with the city. I want to win here. I don't wanna go somewhere else. You know we're going to get this right blah blah. He didn't go down the usual list. And so i think it left open. Some interpretation but getting has changed like the disappointment was clear when the season ended. Some of the things have happened since including obviously the the the train wreck away they went about the the coaching search and lillard. Being caught in the crossfire. There at feeling heat from fans about chauncey billips being selected and so. I don't think we should expect he's going to be rah. Rah right now The trailblazers have a lot of work to do. But we also have not even hit the summer yet. Like there's the draft hasn't happened yet. Free agency hasn't happened yet. There's there's a lot of work to be done. And i think if you're damian lillard which you're probably doing is internally saying here's what i need to see happen externally saying you know what let's let's wait and see i mean you see. He can't he can't say publicly the same things that he's telling say neal o'shea right about what the the state of the roster i i would think that there are some very impassioned debates or discussions being held behind closed doors about what they need to get this thing right and if they can't get it right the he might shift is his stance about staying there long term. But that hasn't happened yet that we know of. What do you think the most interesting potential conversation is amongst players over these next four weeks like i'm kind of curious what jason tatum bradley beal talk about. Tatum and beal close friends dating back to their highschool days both went to the same high school bill with something of a mentor to jason. Tatum actually got him involved with his trainer. Drew hanlin which helped. Tatum elevate his his personal skills and they've talked about how happy they are to be playing together. Played the all star game together for the first time beal last year of his contract. Like you know we've seen these conversations yield real tangible conversation. You'd like to be a fly on the wall on for any of these guys in the next couple of weeks. Yeah i mean look we. We have a history now going back over a decade. If we're to believe that the that the heels were formed in part through team usa activities. You know which is true which is true. That's that's yielded an extra things guy. You know guys who you mentioned. Tatum and bill because they were already friends but guys also become friends through this experience right and then they start getting the ideas about playing together. Like oh hey. This is a lot of fun. Let's do this again in the nba. So there's i'm i'm sure some of that is is happening. It always does. Who else in that group. I mean man. If any of these guys that'd be trying to recruit bam out a bio but he's too early in his in his contract with miami to pry him loose from there And you know the heater still a pretty potent team but you know jimmy butler is up there in miles and outta bios future won't necessarily be there forever. That's the way it goes in the nba. I think tatum has the potential to be like the biggest recruiter. They're like he's about to start the first year of his max level extension. He can recruit bill. But like you can also does damian lillard like. It's great to play in boston. I love it here. Answer some questions of my have a playing on the east coast for the first time. Like i think data might be boston's best asset at this point. Yeah again some of this comes down to bradley. Beal's coming up to that point where he has the leverage to task out because of his contract lillard under contract for several more years and so he's not in that position. So what if it says. Like i need to go like. I don't foresee the blazers being no finish your contract. Just don't see it. i think right. And they would work with him on a deal to sure but directing it is harder so beal can use the leverage of his free agency to say well if you send me to team x. I'm not gonna resign there. Which then blows up that deal and he can direct himself to the team he really wants to be at lillard would have a harder time to doing that. Because he doesn't have free agency looming two to play that card. Yeah well i encourage any reporter. That's in tokyo tatum. Beal and lillard talking to each other. Just take a picture and then let the internet go wild crazy because it will unquestionably last thing for you. Howard the breaking news. This week in the coaching ranks. Is that jamal moseley is headed to orlando moseley of course last with dallas. A really well respected assistant coach there. Who was a candidate for that. Maverick job before. It went to jason kidd my immediate reaction to that higher howard beyond i think being an excellent choice for orlando is that we're gonna look at at moseley and jason kidd on parallel tracks. The next couple of years moseley. There was a strong case to be made that he should have been elevated to that head. Coaching job he'd been considered for other head coaching jobs. Before most recently in new york he had by all accounts a great relationship with luka doncic i understand bringing kit in he's got a history with dallas and as riccar lau said publicly having a player that played the game like kid and having a player that plays the game like don-shik make some sense to pair those two guys together. But there's always going to be as i watched these two situations unfold. I'm gonna wonder you know. Did the mavericks make the right choice. Leading jamaa moseley go and bringing jason kidd in and there's so many variables in this the first being at orlando's in step one or maybe even steps zero of a massive rebuild right there in the negatives right now. I think there's still maybe more fat to trim on that roster before they really bottom out. Yeah and you know you talk about trying to build around. You know markelle foltz. And and jonathan isaac jonathan isaac for so long. They're getting hurt and he's a great player but they've loved writing in a weird way john stays healthy. He's still more of a complementary store right like he's he's a potentially defensive player of the year at some point. He's not a guy who you're building an offense around though and marquel foltz okay. He he got himself back on track in orlando. He has a career now where he didn't have one but he's not a foundational building block. Come on like that's crazy so the roster doesn't have much talent jamal. Moseley's is coming into a situation. Which a lot of first time head coach is committed to which is all right. There's a lot of work to do so You're gonna have to do a lot of development. You're going to have to take a lotta lumps in the win loss column. It's gonna be rough going for the first year or two or maybe three. Let's see how they can get things going. But you know as it has been a certain other like kenny. Atkinson came to look a completely hopeless situation in brooklyn but was known as development coach in atlanta. And sure enough. Everybody who went there. Joe harris spencer. Dinwiddie jared allen versus lower. First round picks. Guys who were you know whether they were reclamation projects whether they were low picks everybody seems to get better the second they went to brooklyn and play kenny atkinson and his staff congenial. Moseley have the kind of effect in orlando can the front office. Get him to kind of guys. That will thrive in that in that kind of environment and carve out careers from cells and carbon identities. Jamal moseley has a lot going for him. And we've heard like many great things about it but we often hear great things about assistant coaches who don't end up panning out so i always. We have to caution ourselves on these things. Because i thought. Brian shaw was gonna be a great head coach and he was. Everybody loved him all the players sung as praises when he was associate head coach under frank. Vogel indiana he goes to denver probably just the wrong guy at the wrong time but he hasn't had another shot since then but that went really badly. Brett brown was really great in in some respects for the for the early years of the process and then suddenly. It seemed like they'd hit some sort of ceiling. Eager kokoschka of had been talked about for years is a great assistant. Coach didn't work out. Swells head coach in phoenix. David dale bumpy ride in memphis and then disastrous in new york. We just don't know like luke walton. Another example like there are plenty of coaches who as their when their assistance. We hear and see the best of them and then you know some of them be go on it and have great success coaches. I mean tyler has been fantastic. Mike malone has been fantastic money williams. Nick nurse dwayne casey a lotta longtime assistance. Get their shot and then you know it. It works out in a dozen. It's all contextual. It's all just the opportunity you have the thing for dallas is. They went with a guy who has experienced jason kit. That experience was not necessarily good experience. Like i think most people around the would look at what he did in milwaukee in brooklyn and say. I'm going to steer clear. Maybe you'd rather have the the unproven. Jamal moseley versus the somewhat proven jason kidd but. I don't think we'll know what the right choice was there for a while yet. Because it's it's gonna take some time before we can evaluate moseley as head coach. I maybe jason kidd learned something in two years as an assistant. I mean that happens. You know working with lebron for entire for two entire seasons working under frank vogel maybe picked up some things that'll be useful to him as a head coach. Moseley to me. The key is giving him time. Like you've got to be committed to moseley for a minimum. I think of three years and more likely five years. And then you see what you have in head coach. You mentioned gore. I mean it's worked out for phoenix. Absolutely but i do think he got hosed out there i mean he only had one year on the job and that year was without deandra aiden chris. Paul had devon booker of course but that was not a good team that he was coaching. There i gotta get moses the because you want to see what the guy can do when you put that team in a position to win a great example to me is james breglio in charlotte. I mean berea. Was one of those guys assistant coach elevated to head coaching position in charlotte. Not great first couple of years there but when he was given players and chance to win he did pretty well. I mean up until lamelo ball went out the horns were really good team and i think they will be a good team. Going forward in part because of the borrego is a pretty good coach. I want to see this magic team. Invest heavily in jamal. The you're the guy developed these guys and we'll keep you around no matter what the won loss record says until you get a chance to win then you judge like brett brown six or seven days since brett brown left but i can see the for letting go of brett brown. I mean they had a talented team and to a degree the underachieved. But you've got to let the coach get a roster on that level before you really make any decisions about whether they can coach. Yeah well and that's the thing about. This is what set up says apart. I think the good organizations from the bad ones is that you you decide when you choose a guy. Especially if he's a longtime assistant not a guy with head coaching experience. And you've said we believe in this guy. This is somebody who's got a great trekker record as an assistant. We're going to first opportunity. It's your obligation to when you say investment. Yeah it's time investment. It's a give them all the tools to succeed. Give him the time to succeed. You've decided you believe in him. So stand behind that have the conviction to stand behind that and take some bumps along the way you know maybe maybe memphis and or the knicks should have stuck with david physed longer. You know we had heard nothing but great things about fiscal coming out of miami. Initially we may yet you know. Find out that he. He can be great head coach in the right situation. Maybe those worth rights situations. He might be one of those guys though. I love physios and assist one of those guys. Though the just the temperament is always important. Like the government like memphis yet. Some battles with market assault didn't work out your plus new york. You just might be one of those guys that doesn't have the right temperament to be is based on what we've seen a memphis in new york might be better suited for these ranks but if he succeeds in l. a. I think he'll get another chance right. Maybe i think the point being though that if you as an organization have identified a guy instead he we believe in him then. Okay then believe in him. Stick with them and make sure you've given them enough tools to succeed Is it a pulling the plug at the first sign of of struggle and that's what happens in the nba. too often. is that seems panic. You know the fans turn. There's some minor flare up. Oh the coach and player got into it. Whatever it may good teams that can happen on as well. And it's it's just. It's the way franchises. React so you have to know whether or not the guy is is is right and then stick with them. And so yeah. Let's jomo's should get a nice long here. She got a ton of latitude in orlando given where they are as an organization given the state of that roster. Yeah i agree. Howard enjoy milwaukee looking forward to hearing the conversation with the lazarus on friday. You can check podcast. Right here on the crossover feet again. Make sure you listen to howard's interview. Spencer dinwiddie from last week. It was really really strong. Enjoy -joy the mid west our. We'll talk when you're back on the northeast always a pleasure. My friend the newest player in the pre nba basketball landscape is overtime. Elite elite will begin playing sometime in the fall. And we'll be headlined by some of the top now. Former high school players in the country players would be paid minimum one hundred thousand dollars with some making north of that and have access to high level facilities training as well as educational programs to help. Get a better grasp on that. I'm joined by brandon williams the head of basketball operations for overtime. Elite and kevin ollie the former. Nba guard uconn. Coach was the head coach and director of player development bread. And i want to start here with you. Just kind of give me the ten thousand foot view overtime elite. What are the objectives. What what what was behind the formation of this league. I think any of us. Chris who've been around for a long time i've actually seen Sort of the downside of young players who entered into professional ranks to this point. It's been the nba Who are not ready. And so what does that mean you know not not ready to form and be stars or is it just not ready to be great teammates or is it not ready to be good partners. is sort of all that you know the idea that the work day is much longer than they know. And that there's more responsibility to be in a professional athlete The responsibilities to families and communities we just have to do a better job preparing them and here was an opportunity to be part of a program that wanted to address all that. It's not just about being a good player. It's like we wanna address the whole athlete. Hope so on. Three levels were hitting basketball. Easiest thing understand. I think businesses in our world is education And then there's brand you know. These young people now are moving at a speed that we aren't as older folks and they want to build things An earlier age particularly off the court so building a brand is important something that can last well beyond their tread on tire so we're hitting it in basketball business brand. That's that's that's really thirty thousand foot view. Kevin what attracted you to this job. Just like his dad is the whole person being able coach them from a mind body and soul Experience and understanding the mindfulness athlete I've seen it from a pro level. Got up tune into play thirteen years with twelve different teams so i understand like the different trials and tribulations you go through with a player not saying that these players are gonna go through that but is getting them more prepared if they do come into some certain situations where it's not typically going the right way. How can they manage that situation. So what they do today can echo into tomorrow and having the ability to kana paint on a black blank. Canvas is what a really attracted to me to to this you know. Ot league program we can take the player really shape the curriculum you not with teaching them about subjects. But we're really teaching them about themselves as well from media training From mental health issues. All the different things that come involved because we all know chris is stress. You know from success is a lot of pressures is a lot of people pulling at you. It's a lot of people won't certain things. But how do you deal with that from a player's standpoint where you can play when you get on the basketball court and half clear and not be caught up in the distractions of off the court issues. Um as desks desks were really kind of vocal. Spirit to give back in it and how these kids you know. Have these players be available at the moment of truth to make the right decisions and that was very important to me. Kevin as you mentioned you played in the nba brand. You played in the nba. As well i wanna ask both of you guys and kevin. I'll start with you like if this was available to you as sixteen. seventeen year. Old looking back. Would you have founded attractive with a definitely founded attractive You know i kind of thought the box anyway. I was from chris. Shaw from from from south central and i chose connecticut. So you places that. I didn't even know nothing about growing up. You always thought out the box and never wanted to go down a path that everybody was going down So i was always curious. And i think that's how my mom especially my mom. My dad raised me. So i definitely been curious of this situation. No no speaking now without you know took it. I'm not sure. But i think it really gave me another option to look at it and this is what we're trying to do not saying that the ncaa is wrong overtime. Leaders wrong or right. It's not about that. It's about if you really care about the student. Athletes you give them as much options as possible. And i think this gives the lee student athlete. Another option and i think you know it's a very Great option for them to have and if they choose overtime league we're going to give our whole heart to make sure they're developed on and off the basketball court chris i- jumping after coach It would have been interesting. Chris but i certainly would not have been a candidate i would. Let's just get that right. What what things that's important. We sit down going through just grassroots community and we spent months just talking to people educating about. You know what we're about who we are. Each of us has a reputation in some other space. Not here The this program isn't for everybody is not the right fit for everybody. We are cherry picking and a lot of ways. These are players that feel like they are destined for professional basketball. There are a lot of sixteen year olds. That don't know that yet and their parents aren't convinced that yet in people that support them. Don't don't feel that confidence yet. They may be another year away or two years away but this is not. This is not the right path for everyone. Twenty four athletes roughly twelve per class. We're looking at juniors and seniors and the truth is at this age. What was really funny about scouting them is everybody's skinny and like a lanky and underdeveloped and still has like a mountain of upside to you know to to get through before you can really see who they're going to be but you know if you have a young player like brand williams who's just dreaming of being an nba player but does not much certainty. That's even realistic We gotta be very careful about this approach In taking because there there are risks but for those that that have already established in this deke. They've established a day of separated from their class. You know jaylen. Lewis has an example the most recent example. He's he's he's elevated in separate. The draft isn't tomorrow though so there's still a lot of work to do but he's already in front running physician and it gives everyone low confidence that this is the kind of investment and the kind of pet that would make a ton of sense for players like that. Let me follow up on that brandon. Because you're you're entering. What suddenly become a fairly crowded space in terms of leagues like this. You know the g. league ignite is one season in but they've had a measure of success. We've seen jalen green probably a top pick. Jonathan kamenga top five or six. Then you have the ncw with this. Recent ruling allowing top players to make money off their name image and likeness. How does how does the elite separate itself from that group. Why think i is. We start a little bit sooner so the g. league zone a great job with what we call it a year the prep year that year. That a recent graduates would be going to college and they've already been hacking the system you know going to italy or china So so there's a market for those players and we want an alternative to college for for for us though. Our players are seeking an alternative to high school so we are a school but we think about the resources that were bringing to the table first of which being an nba like environment You know start coach. Ali coach lehto in a robust set of staff. I mean scouting staff a high performance staff administrative team. Our goal was to simulate an nba organization for for young athletes at sixteen seventeen eighteen. Th there there is no other environment. Like that. And i think the big way that we separate with high school athletes Is that both domestically and internationally. We're able to put twenty four of them together in a building. So what we're selling is the best competition for these guys starts at home. I mean every day in line coaches don't minister drills administer competition aspects of practice and getting ready for games but when you look to the right and left and i noticed as a player. There's no weak link. I mean everywhere you look. There's somebody that's doing what you're doing and possibly doing more. Because they they are not just dreamed about the into the league or to the high level. They're on their way there That's where we've been able to. I think create a little separation from others that have tried or looked at something. Like this kevin. How do you approach this job. Do you do it in a similar mindset and you had at uconn where you have young players you also you know yukon. You had to keep them academically eligible you to follow that pretty closely. I mean is there is it a similar mindset or do you take a different tact. I think you just let it be you know. Similar is not. It's just whatever comes you say yes to it and you cultivate hope from it I never coached high school players. They was always you know graduated from high school. And now they're freshman's This situation is a little different in in was recruiting for two to three years. This situation is a little different. But you know from me. Chris i love the unknown about it. And that's the space i live in. Not just wanna make sure that. I have the space incorporate something in these players that they can just think about it can build from a have a foundation so when they make the transition they have every tool in the toolbox to say okay. Oh that's a problem Assess it let me be able to correct it. Let me obsessed. Let me be aware of it and i think that's the difference between you know coaching a high school kid in in the college. Kid i mean you get able to mold them a little bit better and then you have to understand where they at. Now you know back then. I didn't have social media. We didn't have social media now. These kids these players are building their brand a little bit earlier and now you just meet them where they are. And i can't wait to get them up on campus get them up until atlanta just continue to build a great relationship. Welcome spend time with the one on one in. This situation is going to provide us to do a lot more skill development that i didn't have a really good opportunity and it had not one say good opportunity. I didn't have the best opportunity. Because there's so many things we own a row recruiting You own a row fundraising these different things. Brandon's taken care of in. Dan porter is taken care of. I can just really coach the player and work on his skill development on and off the basketball court. So it's really given me my own lane. So i can really perform my job. Mama job is really breaking down and relationships it starts. Relationship is start with trust. Stars will hold is spending time with the the young student athletes on and off the basketball court and pushed them to greatness and the competition is not on. our side of competition is with him. You know can you beat your previous best bestself. Can you be better than today you know. Can you be better tomorrow than you were date. And that's what i'm coaching. And that's what i love to do. And i think we're going to have some great young man as open as biden has going to be vulnerable going to try to reach for the sky. In the sky is going to be ob- you is not going to be limits. I can't wait to get up to atlanta. We've been having some many camps. Chris has been wonderful to get back on the court with the guys. And i'm looking forward to the next mini camp and dan looking forward to getting them up to atlanta. So we really can go to work. You know when. I was was talking to brian. shaw a couple of months ago. Kevin about how he was coaching. The ignite you know it was a lot of pro stop. He was trying to bring to that team. Are you taking that same. Approach you trying to coach them like their nba players or something different. No it's nothing different is just. I'm building pro. Habits in every situation is going to be different. Chris this is going to be some guys. Come in you know. Say for instance like a. John montero will we got him and he you know is a little bit more advanced than some other players because he's been a pro- already and then it's going to be another situation where we gotta talented guy might not be able to get quick but these opportunities we can go at our own pace we can sit down and talk to them but we're really teaching and building pro habits and those habits is going to translate over to them being great pros when that opportunity come invest in the nba are the euro league so every day you know we are building like a practice plan like more of a college practice plan nba practice bandwidth doing drills. That i got from my numerous stops in the nba. You know we're doing sets in the nba. Then we gotta understand that sixteen years old as well you know and maybe sometimes you gotta you know kinda doubt it down a little bit. But i'm gonna let com. I'm going to let that go. i'm not going to focus on one of it. I'm not gonna say oh. We're doing this process. Each and every day every day is different. And that's what i love about the unknown. And i'm gonna treat it like that and we just gonna continue to bill because i think we got great mas and organization that really want to coach the whole person. And that's what i'm really excited about. You decided to upgrade your outdoor deck. So you ordered the essentials. Power washer said a patio chairs and a shiny new grill. And you use your bank of america. Customized cash rewards credit card choosing to earn three percent cashback online shopping and up to five point. Two five percent preferred rewards member which you put toward your most essential deck addition a bird feeder of yours at bank of america dot com slash more rewarding copyright two thousand twenty one bank of america corporation support for this podcast comes from invent together according to studies less than thirteen percent of all inventors who hold a us patent are women black and hispanic college graduates patent at half the rate of their white counterparts. But we can fix that by increasing participation innovation and patenting by underrepresented groups. It would quadruple. The number of american inventors and increase annual gdp by almost one trillion dollars. Invent together is a coalition of organizations companies. Universities and concerned citizens committed to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to invent and patent because the more diverse. The american patent system gets the stronger and more successful. our nation will become. What can you do to help. Divers inventors patent and unleash economic opportunity. Find out at invent together dot org learn more and take action today brandon not to continue to compare this team to the ignite but when i talked to sharieff abderrahim about that i mean. I had asked him about the sustainability of that team. Given how much. Money was being poured in to pay some of the players. And he bobbed and weaved floyd mayweather trying to answer that question. Because it's it's hard to commit to it without say a television contract more sponsorships and things like that when you can you speak to kind of the sustainability of this because we've seen startups with an influx of cash. Get get in big the first year. But then peter out. I mean what needs to happen. Four overtime elite to become a long term successful program while has got to answers. I think you know a concept. I mean we're we're selling on the ability to develop young players and have a more more pro ready right. So this is. This is the path we are offering basketball development. Call it professional Business development And we are also like leveraging. What is an incredible media platform that again. The things that we like to call a distinguishing factors. That's a huge one. So not to bob and weave one. We gotta be good ass. You know that. That's how have long deputy spurs the spurs. They were good for really long time. And so we've got the that there were good at this note. No pressure on kale right The the the second piece though is you know and this comes from my my time in the nba. It just wasn't that long ago where it out of chicago. Pre-draft combine interview. If i said. I wanna build my brand. Everybody in the room was like smirking and like you know what. What are we talking about like. It's about basketball basketball basketball And you know if you are young team developing and not winning a lot of games truth is you can't sell just basketball because your basketball isn't great you got to sell personalities and stories in that there's something that people can invest in in fall in love with other than like the final score like otherwise. The sixers had no chance right any any development team yet to buy into a story and for us. I think we have a chance to create stories but we get a chance to show those stories because we have a platform. So it's it doesn't take much. I mean i'm not a social media guru. But when i got recruited for this job haven't been around the block a little bit certainly from an nba perspective. I heard a couple of things. I really got my attention. One was fifty million followers That's eyeballs and we all know that that Business follows the eyeballs in whatever in whatever respect. The other was which is unfair. Because i think that number changes month over month but it started at one point four and not set maybe one point eight or one point nine billion with a b. billion views of content a month that overtime in some ways has found a way to the heart. The mind of young people It is being communicated and solid as you know the generation z. sort media and content engine We are doing an amazing thing here which is developing young talent in a pure way that we want to make sure that they are prepared. Top to bottom to do well on the court to do well and communities to do well in business but then there's this other thing which is they want to be known like. No player wants to play in an empty building. Everybody wants to play where it matters. They wanna play. When nick can rock and like the building and just like recognizing their talent. We're just artists. And one thing that is kind of showcase. By one event that that overtime overtime the media company producing s called. You see it on youtube to. Is that over. Hundred million people watched that. I mean that that's not an insignificant number that players that are going to play overtime. Lee will have the opportunity to be known The the opportunity of bring brick big brands to the table and support this platform If not already indicated by the kinds of investors that that have shown interest but the brands that are coming to the table our sustainability is going to be showing value delivering value to not just the athletes but to overtime visibility. I would imagine great for them but can you monetize it. Can you make it so this league is in the black or does it need to be in the black every year. Well my the good news is as a basketball man. No different than a different than the is Get a budget. My job is to be fishing and and spend wisely. I i'm not. I'm not asked to sell tickets or generate revenue that's for a tremendous And in successful a business operations Our job is to make sure that what we are delivering is high is a high level product That you see the growth and development of our young players. What's there recruited. We gotta make them better. They need to be able to perform and probably the best testament of our success is going to be our nba. Gm voting with this pick right but with a coach saying like they did a nice job. This guy was. Well coached testament to takeo and the rest of the coaching staff. That if we're doing that will prove successful. Because guess what the next crop of recruits when we're in the gym like we're not chasing them. There's sort of meeting us at at minimum half way. We need to keep bringing high level taliban and developing talent to prove successful and i have a tremendous set of partners across academics and across content media. That will will do their part to elevate our business. Can you expecting to tap into some of your. nba relationships. I mean as you mentioned thirteen teams in twelve seasons. You've made a lot of friends over the years. We're going to see like san preston sitting in the crowd for your practices as a whole so sam and so many gyms that i know you know Kevin durant and all these guys are destinies in overtime. Just having them be around. We had our first minicamp. Ray allen showed up and not only showed up. He brought his son to work out with guys. Just it was just amazing. does just see how the branches that we can continue to pull up on and they continue to pull on us and be a partnership in. This thing is going to be great. Are you expecting to have kind of drop ins. Durant's involved with the league. You expecting these guys. Just be around. Which i would imagine would be both a resource for you but also an attractive quality to this league definitely. Definitely we going to build a place where it's going to be hopefully a development premier development destination for everybody and you know hopefully katie can come out and work out with guys and russell westbrook and james harden and all these guys that we know and i know i had opportunity to be evolved. Then it's kinda beat a veteran guys We want them to be around. Because it's not. Just me sean. It's also watching tape like these are the different drills and look how k. d. and look how chris paul is using the pick and rolls and now they're showing up that's a that's a big big bang for us with us growing these young talented student athletes To get them inspired to the next level and they're doing a great job done only gonna do. I coached him. Chris a coach me on a day to day basis. I'm open to that and we just really want to have a love affair with guys and and the end of the day chris. We want appease the basketball guys. We wanna play the right way. We want to share a basketball. We wanna run. We wanna have fun. We want how to join the game but it can't just be me me me. It has to be weak. And i'm wanting to teach guys how to be involved in any system they get drafted about. They can be a part of a productive system and be a productive partner in in the community as well no matter what city they when they arrive to the nba brandon. Before let you go. What schedule gonna look like i mean is this team playing. Just walk me through kind of what these kids are getting into. And what kind of schedule you gonna be able to put together so schedule that that is really interesting for everybody. And i wanna try to illuminate. But i've got to be careful we are still contracting with some teams But for the audience the think about it in buckets. We're gonna play independent prep schools. That's going to be a significant part of our schedule. We are a high school so we are looking to schedule. Some of the top independence that you would typically no to have a national schedule can travel that have the ability to be mobile. We're scheduling home and away with with With those folks and it looks like net set as an example It looks like you know. Folks that are playing for a national title Arizona florida california. So it'll be a widespread travel schedule for us. We're also looking at European competition so think about junior euroleague as an example. Some of the best clubs the Insects as an example Where we can get a collection of sixteen to nineteen year old elite talent to compete against us. And then as i mentioned earlier on the show we really feel like the best competition is gonna come internally and that's where our league play Comes into effect so we are looking at our group of twenty four as three teams of eight. There will be standings you'll be able to track will compete against each other. That'll be a significant part of our schedule as well. We don't want to overstep our guys one of the things. We really wanna correct leading science. Guide us here. is is minimized the wear and tear. Nobody's while still developing and preparing for a professional level place so a schedule of maybe thirty five. To forty games is our target. We started september Training camp will will begin Play by mid august. We'll be done by by Late march is how we see our schedule shaping up i'm looking forward to it brennan kevin. It's a really interesting concept and hope you guys have a lot of success with an. I'll certainly be watching a lot of. Nba people will be watching but brandon. Stay out of a set of massachusetts. Kevin has like some basketball. Ptsd from all those bc. Matchups i'm sure would probably were so tough. I don't remember kevin. It's not real like talk about it. But lita past. We'd be six thousand. That's not very nice. That's hovering kevin brand. Thanks for joining me. I appreciate it all right. Thank you chris. Thanks so much.

Just like his dad is the whole person being able coach them from a mind body and soul Experience and

Did Boston Celtics Overplay Their Hand?
"Boston. Overplay its hand. There were a lot of reports in the hours. Leading up gordon hayward signing that the celtics and the pacers were discussing a sign and trade gary washburn over the boston globe. He suggests that the pacers were willing to throw in miles. Turner the celtics water a miles. Turner plus package whether it's miles. Turner and tj warren or miles turner and victoria depot. That that that celtics package seemed to highly unlikely to be something the pacers would go for. Tj warrant is coming off a monster performance in the bubble and victor oladipo for all his injury issues. last year is still an all star level player. You don't give up to players of that caliber to get a player. That play like gordon hayward frankly so the celtics. They didn't walk away with nothing because they do have tristan thompson. Now they do have jeff teague. But i can see jeff how miles turner would goodness celtics uniform. And the guy is a three point shooting mobile shot-blocking big man. He's not perfect. He's been called soft before there's questions about positional fit. But something tells me brad. Stevens could do well with versatile. Big man who can shoot three pointer. I i just. I wonder if we'll look back on this in a year and wonder if the celtics overplayed their hand because miles turner in addition to all the things i said he's got a reasonable contract by nba standards anyway. Eighteen million dollars per year over the next three. What do you think of that. Do you think there's a chance the celtics overplayed their hands here. I don't know. I don't think so. Crass t taking a slightly different tact on it. Because i wasn't all that a or the whole idea of only getting mile turner back in the deal. I understand everything you just said But the celtics certainly just made a a decision that that's what they were looking for excitement. Lucy gordon hayward elsewhere without getting any say return on. I don't mind that trying to get a little bit more in it. Not working out for them and again. I'm hearing all your points what you're saying about mouse. Turner but that's something maybe dearly age his staff. I'm not saying you're gonna go out and find another mouse. Turner application that production with a couple of different players here and there and whether it ends up being some kind of combination of daniel thais and looking down the bench and seeing what happens off from that point I just wasn't sure that you know. Look indiana if you really wanna gordon hayward i think you had to force them to really make you pay for it and i don't say that do would you come down to it. The pacers were willing to give up that much and so that sure indicates how much that they really wanted. Gordon hayward i'm fine with the celtics student what they did now. You could be ultimately correct. They may regret not adding that kind of player. Especially we get into the playoffs split I agent it is staff are more than willing to let that ride. It see if they can't come up with that kind of a similar player through the course of use it a couple of different players and seeing what they can do at the trade deadline. Yeah they did get tristan thompson. Which is exactly what they need in on that front line. They've got the more athletic up perimeter shooting floor spacing kind of guy. You've got robert williams who is athletic shop locked they didn't have the physical rebounding tough guy. And that's what tristan thompson is brings championship experience to that team which i think will be a valuable addition and jeff teague is fine. He's not a starter anymore. But you're not asking him to basically kemba walker insurance down there in case kennedy's to take time off that knee injury so it wasn't. It wasn't a failure of an off season for boston. I just. I wonder how we look at this this summer. The summer this fall we look at a couple years

Gary Russell Jr. dominates Tugstsogt Nyambayar, retains WBC featherweight title
"Gary Russell. You know with an interesting figure. Because he's extremely talented fighter. We saw he scored a nice win against You know king tug in the mandatory fight that took place last week Everybody looks Gary. Russell has a great talent and a in a in a worthy competitor against any of these guys but he has said that he can't get the big fight now. If you can't get the big fight you take the next biggest one you can get and go out there and make seven figures every time you get in the ring for whatever guarantees are. He has decided not to do that. He wants to Fight Leo Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz findings. Your Monty Davis. Obviously that is not going to be therefore if you look down the list of guys at one twenty six or even at one thirty you know for him that our makeable that are going to be interesting to the public. There's not a lot there. He says he'd go up to one thirty five if necessary You know if there's no Leo Santa Cruz Fight. Against Tank Davis. I'll tell you a huge that at least in part of the country I live in the you know the the Washington DC Maryland. Virginia area is tank against Gary Russell. I mean one guy's from Washington and One guy from Baltimore they'd fill up any of the arenas in either city but again that's probably alongside so Gary Russell. He's kind of like a man without a country right now. He's he's got talent he's got a title he can really fight And he just doesn't have the top guy to fight against unfortunately so he's Kinda off to the side and you know he's only been fighting once a year I I would hope he would be able to find another before the end of this year if he does. I just really couldn't tell you who it's going to be against her. What kind of level? It's going to be one twenty six or one thirty Gary Russell. I think would be a threat either. Spotty Caesar's really
