"After starting the year three and for the Kansas city chiefs of one four in a row after nineteen two nine one of the Dallas Cowboys the chiefs defense led by Chris Jones who had three and a half sacks limited the cowboys to three field goals I think this is the first time within four weeks where we had all our guys healthy and able to mention play together that's a huge part for us as a defense both cheese touchdowns were scored on the ground running back Clyde Edwards a layer was activated from injured reserve and scored the second touchdown to give the chiefs a sixteen to three halftime lead Greg Echlin Kansas city

"Conversely guys right now when we wind for me. It's about improvement in weekend and week out. You know Staying consistent with that you know of to improve mistake assistant will be where we want to be at the end of the season years tired out there this week because the kobe protocols getting closer but he's not day you've been in contact with i guess faxes in your meetings on soon. You'd feel like he's back here tomorrow. Maybe playing with what are your thoughts. he's been on a giancarlo immedi. Haven't talked to one But i don't i don't know what's the situation so i can't really give you my opinion on that. But that's my guy is one of the leaders defense and we miss him dearly. Roll out there. That's nothing really changes for us. you know. His presence will be missed Woody burns that his team. Would it be missed in. His leadership will be missed. But i i put faith in our guys on the back end of guys that can step into real football. You know guys on his team that have been in situations where they played in the super bowl game unexpectedly because of situation. So i'm definitely comfortable with the guys. We got anything. Extraordinary happened where five game play with frank of that. Play the exact. It's gonna be really fun. It's gonna be really fun to how my brother on the edge and To have j. reid in the inside he's been a great addition to this defense His presence mean a lot for this defense and gave us the flexibility to me outside so For me honored to play with those guys in What they bring to this defense babysitting. John on rushed out. What do you remember about having the stop. Korean back when you practice and train again. What you know Kareem hunt thinking. He led the league in rushing yards his rookie year. I mean look at the look at the guy History his stats. I mean speaks for itself is maintained for himself in this league and he's a physical running and can catch and has great speed out of the backfield so we gotta try to affect them some type of way you guys take care jay. We finally with the new season. Starting like this of other teams changed you expect from what you saw around last year specialty in change your thing is we played them in two thousand twenty one so it was. You know you go back and you look at that game. Obviously look at it hard. We didn't have any in that game so weren't able to really look at that stuff so you had to go back and look at what they didn't appre- season what they did during the regular season. But you know they're not a lot's changed the same personnel most importantly they got their same coach and coach back. Mike prefre does a great job. You know those guys are well coached. And we're expecting a heck of a battle for instant mchugh is for sunday's are gonna. I'm not gonna say exactly who's going to be back there right now. But i'm happy with both of those guys and the good thing is we have a lot of guys we can go to. And he's one of them he certainly one of them things like the roster positive. I'm very pleased. I mean those guys every year every year Beach and andy and they do a great job considering special teams and knowing how important is and and making sure that we have enough guys on our end of it. I was very happy. Worked out this year. they're all good football players offense and defense so You know. I think you know as a whole a better football team because of the russian. They put together with outdoor in for a bunch of games last year. How critical is is a happy healthy. Dorian helps us on special teams during You know obviously one of our key players for special teams and having him on the field is important. we did miss a lot missing a bunch last year other guys had to fill in informed. So it's good to have them healthy. Start the year off with them out there on the field for bill. Sixty four yarder coming into this year. Is it realistic to say range. Could be up to seventy yards in the right conditions. Yeah you could. I mean if you know in a pre-game if there was a strong wind behind awesome he could hit certainly hit a seventy ardor that kick that he made in practice Wasn't under hard rush. You know there was a lot of in but we did have a little bit of wind behind us and he probably would have made it from sixty eight. If you looked at it. You know how far it went. So seventy yards is not out of the question for him in the right conditions. He can do it but We're not gonna throw him back there in those a lot of situations that just because if you miss a field goal like that the field position that you're giving up so much that you have to really consider that you know but at the end of a half no You know with a couple of seconds left in the game and in half and you get out there and you've got. You might wanna try something like that. Situation was right. We knew we had a strong leg. We saw that You know and then when we first got him he was really hitting the ball really high really high trajectory. We knew if we could lower his trajectory a little bit that his power would be even better and that's really what he's developed over the time so he's he's definitely got one strongest legs in a league for sure maslum. You ought to stay away from because you're on a message. Just keep going. I always say you would say. I'm a manager the manager. I'm going to make it sure that they don't kick too much making sure. Tommy doesn't punt too much You know let them let them do their thing. They got their own little world. Now that they you know. I kind of i kind of stayed back from it. I step in when i need to. But you know. I'm more of a manager with those guys than i am. actual You know every down coach so to speak or or a kicking coach like a golf coach or golf swing coach so it's a little different from me. The whole idea happened. Hold and all that stuff the group of three working together. They haven't done it as long as you had before that. Come along confident in all of that. One hundred percent confident all those guys together again and they talk about the stuff all the time and they're always working i mean they'll they'll work entire practice on the operation in different ins and outs and what. We're gonna call this. We're gonna call that in every once in a while. They let me in what they're doing. So i'm very confident. In those guys and what they do feel never law oval anglade's greatly change the conversation about wondering feel border not percents. How's that affected your job. As far as hyper is the situation. It depends on who you're playing. It depends on how your offense is doing. Defenses playing you know. Is it a field position game. You know isn't a game where we need. Pin somebody down there on instead of kicking kicking a field goal. I mean it all depends. There's so many factors that go into it analytics. Say one thing but the weather could say another. You know i mean there's so many aspects to it but we use analytics as just a tool. It's just a tool but it's not the end all. It's not the thing that we're going to. You know you know. Mike our guy. He's he's up there in the box and he's always telling us you know different things giving us advice as far as what the analytic say and then you have to take that information and then you have to input it. What what you're getting into game weather wise and what team. You're playing in what. How often moving the ball higher defensive stop the instincts process. No no not now for me thanks..

"Player. Let's move to another one cameron. Newton probably a big story within the nfl right now since he's been released with the patriots like i think for him maybe the best bought for him to go. 'cause if you know cam cam is in the thinking of. He is still a starting quarterback. And and i could see his thought if they can. There are some guys around here that he he can give teams a better chance to win. I know hill in houston he shares can but outside of that. I don't know if those opportunities are going to be there for cam to be a starter right now and so. I think the best thing for km is to go somewhere with an established quarterback in a place where he has a chance to really win and you could use him in a package like if he goes to a team. Whose quarterback is not you know a big time running thread or somebody who you know. Like lamar like is not a tape deck. That i don't know how much they want to run him. But like not those those types of settings certa. I don't think it's insane for andy and brit features to just take a look to see. Hey with our creativity with us having the best play designer in a game since bill walsh having pat they're or short yardage was not good last year. It was a real weakness for us especially trying to run the ball into the end zone inside. The you know the ten inside the five with a they struggled with that in a major way to at least have that package and a have that threat for other defenses. Not only do we gotta deal with pat mahomes and kelsey in hill and obviously mccoll hardman. Who is destined for a breakout season. And marcus. all right. But not only. Do we have to deal with those. Those guys and deal with with with clyde edwards hilar- now we got cam. Newton in the potential short yardage third down fourth. Insures the mini things that you could probably do. An anti could do with it. I'm just saying super bowl or bus given yourself a chance to to to get to have all kinds of options and it was something you struggled with big time. I'm not saying go getting. But i could be decreed by the creativity of andy reid airbnb and what they could do as just that is another weapon for them. Is it intriguing. Yes i would absolutely be curious to see how andy reid would utilize cam. Newton downright horny about zeon. Did they struggle in short yards situations last season yes absolutely. I think that that's going to change this season with his offensive line With the stellar. Run blocking these guys are going to be able to create for clyde. I don't think that's going to be something that we talk about this season. And the reason i would not be in favor of this in any way is that i just don't understand why you would ever consider taking patrick mahomes off the football field under any circumstance when you're trying to score points like he's just proven that he's better at it than everybody else in. Football is so i understand if you're on the one yard line. Yeah cam newton. Pretty much unstoppable. And he's inside the five over his entire career. When you get that close to the end zone yes he's not vaccinated so you're risking bringing a player in his refusing the vaccine who could potentially expose you patrick mahomes to co vid which could jeopardize him being available for a game. So i don't know why i would want to introduce that risk to my team and it's also like you know you're like those cats did it. Britney's party over this week. I don't know. I don't know what you thought you. You don't know until yeah. I thought that was donald irvine. I some people. There was people that britney's party this weekend this weekend. Anyway go ahead relaxing on tested positive coming out of that party and know that much okay. Well i didn't know about that. I that's not great. I don't wanna hear that But now i was that lots rods that you've got an unvaccinated player candidate coming. I'm just saying it's not like she's not been around attendance with somebody it so yeah but so it's also you know like what we saw with the forty niners right now. Where kyle shanahan is talking about. Yeah we might mix trae lance into the game. Jimmy g. is gonna be the starter or we're gonna put trae lanson for certain packages similar to what harbaugh did with alex smith and colin kaepernick. Back in those days. The bears are talking about doing the same thing with andy dalton in just in fields like those teams. That makes a little bit more sense to me. Because you got quarterbacks with limitations and you have quarterbacks who just can't do certain things aren't particularly good at various aspects of the game. You have the guy who's better at every aspect of the game then everyone right now. A aside from you know patrick mahomes in a foot race with lamar jackson. As far as passing the football goes in scoring points. Patrick mahomes better at it than everybody else in the world right now so i wouldn't want to jeopardize any rhythm or flow continuity within the offense by taking him off the field for play. So cam newton can get an easy. Go ahead touchdown because i trust andy reid creativity to get in the end zone and trust patrick mahomes creativity and athleticism and improv ability to get that figured out so i just don't see how it makes the chiefs. A better football team by taking was off the field or you know the other. That's a fair point. I would argue. They had they had those guys last year. They had their creativity last year and they were still one of the worst teams and that was one of the biggest issues were was was running the football in scoring in close and had like they had to ahead to do a whole lot like very they really struggled with that. And i think you add cam now as it. All those points are valid points. But you add cam there. I think cam makes your short yardage and your inside the tin offense better. I i think he does that. And i i think now cam has to come here not be delusional and understand what the role is but like you go. You go like i could imagine camp on the field at the same time as bad like i can imagine a lot of those those things to where like. I'll disagree with you a bit. Like i think pat is really good at almost all aspects of the game but but that right there the short yardage that running in run with like he can do it. But i'm nervous every time that dude pulls it in and and and and and runs it in and he's done a little bit as we remember the super bowl that hit. He took into the end zone. He can do it. But man you add cam. Who's basically going to pay for play for free. Because of the veteran minimum minimum and his contract. I just just to make yourself tight at all those and in a spot where you struggled and they had andy and then last year and they still could make it work. Well and the chiefs did free up some cap space on thursday this week. It was a little bit of money..

"You can. You can't get pressure and they'll be able to hold up in the back end like i have some concerns. They're going to need some help to to be to be able to hold their own and the way that spags loves to run defense certa is. He loves to be dependable up in the front four. He loves to get pressure upfront with his down. Four linemen it. You'll have fun with him. We know what he did with the giants. You know we would have straighten and and tuck in asean and It matthias key. Would he would have all those guys down and they would rust the quarterback and that was where the where the defense is. Hallmark was absolutely mass. Everything else behind it. They got one do that. I believe right now. Then there's some other guys that you feel good about and i know k. Was here each come. Come marching through with guys. You feel good about right. There's there's some guys that you feel decent. That could have some upside that you could feel could come in this year and do some things but man that pass rush is going to be dependent by ninety five chris. Jones is going to have to be like he's going to have to beat double teams consistently from the outside chips. Because that's who they're going to take away. I don't trust frank clerk. Whenever he does get healthy or he does get suspended. I don't trust frank clark to be a guy that says all right chris you can take off a quarter like cry like frank's got it. No frank is just another regular player to me right. We've already established he stealing money. He's just a regular player to me chris. Jones has to be what j. J. watt was like five seven years. Ago with the texans khalil. Mack was when he first got to chicago. He's got a dominated such fashion because the way that's bags wants to do things the way this team is put together on the back end is they got. They got rush the passer and the number one guy. There is chris jones and he's got to play it at mvp level for this to work. Yeah i mean at this point. I don't see how is the chief's fan. You could be super confident. That you're just gonna get like ten sacks out of frank clark this season god like i just don't see it We haven't seen it the last two years. I understand that. Frank has been clutching the postseason. He shown up in big moments. But he's done nothing over the last two years to make you think that he's a guy who's gonna come out and just contribute like twelve sacks now maybe the death of this defensive line the steps that guys like collins Quarter taking it. Mike data is going to contribute to some of that this season and they'll have some saks a little bit more evenly distributed but chris jones our our guy pete sweeney editor in chief of arrowhead. Pride has gone on record saying he believes chris. Jones is gonna break the sacher. I'm not okay. That's that's a bit far. I'm not quite there. But i do think chris jones is coming for that defensive player of the year award this season because for the past two to three years. He's been the second best interior defensive lineman in the nfl. outside of aaron. Donald aaron donald. His just been so special. That people don't even realize how good chris jones's outside of kansas city. Chris jones is a special special player. And i think we're gonna see a full showcase of that this season with him. Moving all over the line. And i do think the chiefs are gonna be able to exploit matchups with him in a way that they never have before so i think i. I totally agree with you that he has to be that caliber of special this season and i think he is going to be that caliber of special this season. I see i agreed with you two years ago. I don't think he was that guy last year. Like i think guy like to force buckner in indianapolis past him up like i. I don't think he last year there was some injuries. Whatever was something last year he didn't he didn't play the way he did previously the year before and they won the super bowl. I'm with you. I thought he was. It was him and aaron. Donald were the best to interior Defensive lineman in the game. He can't be like last year right like he can't be like last year's not going to get it done. I will say though that last year the the easy to look at stats like sack. Numbers in total pressures and stuff like that did say that but like his analytical numbers were is high is any interior defensive lineman football like he was getting pressure. He just wasn't getting the sax last season like sometimes. There's other variables in play there that you can have to look at to account for like why chris jones wasn't having that level of success. But like i agree with you. There was times last year. Where you're like. You need more out of him if he's truly your best defensive player. Yeah yeah he was. Yeah but he just like i guess. Let me say it like this. It can't be no. Oh you go to the numbers and the analytics. You could just not someone exactly what he does now partner. It's got to be visible by everybody. It's got to be visible by four. Fourteen year olds. That don't know the game very well. They're watching it bill. That guy right there ninety five he's dominate when you watch aaron donald khalil mack and. Jj watt you don't have to go to the numbers or analytics to know that they they were dominant in those. And that's what chris jones has to be for this thing to work because we as we've said spags defense is very dependent on him getting pressure from the front and he doesn't all and as we can see they don't make corner priority. We see how they go through in free agency in the draft. They don't make it a high priority because the way he wants to run his defense. An unambiguous talked about that. A lot here but with that means all right up front is where we're gonna go and that's what they did. They gave frank a whole bunch of money and they gave chris christie a whole bunch of money. Right now he got one of and he's got to be dominant and he's got to be dominant sorta with everyone trying to stop him from being dominant but throw in all kinds of chips double teams sliding protection his way and and with that this is this is what they're going to need. They're going to need from him. And you said it. You'd think he's coming from the defensive. Mvp that player of the year crown. I don't know i. I think i think peter's is really wishful thinking. Understand the seventeenth game. But but he he's got to at least be that like he has to be a guy that is in the conversation and somebody that you don't go to the numbers to look and see his impact. It just is just very clear every sunday. I would tab. Chris jones for seventeen sexes. You feel for seventy. Yeah yeah. I thank seventy feel like. That's that's very achievable. Sure i i'll take fourteen or fifteen but just pure dominance and pressure all the time like i like there are tons where like. Jj watt may not gotten here but he just.

"Trade from when you thirty. It's improved a lot. Just started understanding how he thinks and vice versa. So we don't have to say as much and if we do you know clear and precise about everything. It's less conversations more of us on me. He knows exactly what i'm talking about. I didn't get that. But i only got twelve plays but i always be more square. Be more firm on pass protection and just be more of a mahler on the run bog just more feel more comfortable. You know the communications. Very clear so i know exactly what i need to do. not too much. Just because i've been a write cycle a lot of maturity honestly He's a rookie center. He's new you're gonna think he's gonna be hesitant to make calls or something but he's got he gets everybody on the right pace like he's bigger has accepted or fun as expected so far. But it's on. It was only preseason but even i'm enjoying myself out there. It's good to be back. I feel some patterns. Uphold you take off and Just keep doing what i do. I mean i'm not gonna change. Anything depend on who play. So how aggressive what type of especially. I just think it's important for us to set the tone. You know come off. I plant smash them. They're not going to like that. "I i like because it doesn't just show socks but it shows how effecting the quarterback there in one thousand nine hundred legal asher not great nineteen in the league if you just if you just into saks and where they ranked there. They weren't much better than their hurry. Percentage you mean in fact they were nineteenth. Thirty two shocks there pressure rate again. Now this was a little bit better. And again i liked this number as well. There were twelve twenty four point six about one out of every four times but they also blitzed a lot. They blitzed ninth most in the nfl. So yes. Those numbers were average in terms of socks and pressure rate and hurry. Pressure was a little bit barron average today. The bullets a lot. If you can get those numbers into the top ten or so and you don't have to blitz. All time that's huge. That's a huge step up in class and it makes your secondary better which they might need because you lose brian. I love snead ward. I think is number two corner not more than that fenton. Still a young guy who has not seen a ton of snaps defensively. So if you're the chiefs and you can help out your secondary this year by not blitzing. That's that's great. You're you might need that. Which now we're talking about the entire defense and how it works in tandem and works together. Now we get to the linebackers. The linebackers have been the biggest weak spot on this defense. "The right way all right back to chris jones back to the chiefs so far jones has been the star of camp. And that's saying something because again allies have been good. we're going to get the linebackers and a second who might be the biggest surprise as a camp but jones has been great and this is a guy who of course has been great. Part of this point obviously earned a four year. Eighty five million dollar deal a year ago. He's a two time pro bowler all right somebody. Who through five seasons has forty and a half sacks including fifteen and a half back in two thousand. Eighteen last year had seven and a half. He's been a phenomenal player. Other than aaron. Donald there has not been a better defensive tackle in the nfl since he's come into the league. Okay that said he's now obviously. Everybody knows transitioning a little bit. He's going to place in the end. He slimmed-down little. I gotta tell you if you're watching any of these drills. He's not losing any power. He is destroying people. I mentioned before for the break in tuni. -tuni- is an all pro guard. The highest paid interior linemen in. Nfl history. he destroyed joni on a couple of one on one know again. The defense has the advantage air but tunisia kind of player who neutralizes at advantages jones. Destroy them. It has been fascinating to watch him. "Day of full team practice here on the campus of missouri western state university on thursday and after practice was over. We had an opportunity to hear from defensive. Lineman chris jones remember. he's playing both tackle. And the edge positions running back clyde edwards allaire wide receiver byron pringle and finally cornerback legit serious needs. So we'll go in that order on this podcast. We'll take a quick break in the middle. Let's start with defensive. Tackle chris jones to s- might wanted to beth rogers in the league and you best three tech in the league if you were there. What are your favorite death. Well i don't. I don't really pay attention on stuff. I feel like those guys Never really accurate. I you know what i mean. So i appreciate the compliments. My favorite gap is any many any gap. I can get to the quarterback in I'm excited about it. Those guys miss the most when they try to rank your position honestly. I don't know. I don't know you know they understand. There's a lot going into russian passive and placement eye coordination skill. a little luck and a little play calling. You know what i mean so all it comes together all works together for you then you will reach the benefit on it. You know sometimes it. Don't worry sometimes it does. But you know you pray about it you wrote in and utilize your skill set on sunday. Say your left and ended up with and especially probably got a sack would have gotten planted. Wanna talk about it. And how did that feel to it. Around the engineering closed. Bliss i feel good rushing all day. It's okay i know is. You're seeing some a little ole veteran in a room but i feel so they're rushing off the edge and you know You know having acquisition of jay read alone. This line of scrimmage has free me tremendously and i'm just so appreciative. Of his dominance. And the inside him in front clark They're like tit for tat and they work well off each other and turk shown warren he's able to get around the gac and move and they're ninety has been phenomenal so foreign counsel my biggest thing is continue to get one percent better. Do i discount when we do that. By the time the season reach we just keep on elevating baby keep elevating and we're going to be what we want to be by the end of the year. The is on the field. What about did this last after birthdays review which is more so adding to my Feel session instead of watching mainly three takes. I'm kinda miss. Imagine watching a few three tastes few the ends Cam jordan you know. Gas is Set they set the stage for divas. Event is this league mouse. Garrett julie bosa you know those type of guys who have made a name for this it at the position of deficit in well i I d- yoga three times a week. In pilates you know. I don't know if anything it was fun. Man i was one moment. I thought it was going to have my head above my on my neck so you know what i mean. So it's been fun different. My i can do some positions now. I never thought i could do but this. Yeah i usually do pilates during all season. But i started early this year for my flexibility. You know ben in just a little different from taking turn on a three so i wanted to be a little more flexible. A little more lenient on been an edge and i was able to work flexibility a lot of weight wiser weiner inviter looking play compared to inside. I'm like fifteen twenty pounds lighter i I came up here on the first day. Quick story. I came up here on the first day. I grabbed a popeye's chicken sandwich. Three two strokes are biscuit. Fry and twelve count nugget still to ninety two and i was telling him he was like you imperfect way i was like no. I'm not. I just like three sandwiches from popeye's and she can scripts and so i felt like my weight is i'm good. I'm still trying to move up to ninety five range. I mean the practice right. Now you're gonna feel game. Or what is it that transition well just more so focus on filling the best way though where i can play out and out because you know merely i'm not a real de and you know spans gonna move me around most likely i'm going to be planned. Both spots depend on game plan. And who are we plan. And what's the best match up. So i just try to stay. Put myself at a weight where i can't play three. Take the whole game. Played the in hogan. If you've never been a shy about tackle tackle now player. Maybe we trying to break the record. Baby we're trying to break the record. No the blessed about the record We're trying to have the best in the league first and foremost on trying to be dumb throughout this whole season and we're trying to challenge each other to get better day in and day out. If we do that. This demand will be where we wanna be. You know this'll be go. Pats wanted to get out of it. No one that we're taking our time with it. You know we're gonna let it come in. Come no need to rush it. But it's gonna be exciting. It's gonna be a guys are building up to it Strongly high hopefully. Don't be this hot when we put the pads on. But i think we definitely gonna get after. I see a lot of physicality going on right now. People are excited. Forget we can't really do too much with The shells home. But i think we will definitely get out there and on challenge each other. Along the line of scrimmage with that in the off season in disaster all or did read them. You're ruining we've been. I think german recanted came in here and Gave the coaches to flexibility to move me around. You know by him being who he is in heaven and such big presence. "Of fifty five ish players. What is the what used to be a fifty three man roster but they have to fifty five on game days or something and then you could add an extra offense of linemate whatever it is you know i mean that's like thousands of player the chiefs have four of the top twenty. I'm gonna stop my complaining there right so i'm good. I'm good you know like you know. Maybe some people want to get in the weeds. Like ron parker should be two hundred and thirty four versus. Am by the way hat. Tip to ron parker who just found out. He's getting inducted into the new berry. College athletics fame. That's really all. I have to say about it. But hey ron parker shoutout. That's yeah congratulations. You big shout outs to you. I i was honestly i was okay. That tyron wasn't top fifty. I feel like it went to like seventy five. We'd see tyrod matthew. That seems about where i would put them. Honestly jamal adams. I didn't see in the top fifty list i. I would probably still have jamal adams above taryn matthew. I don't think necessarily on this team. But i think if you're taking it from a look at it from a thirty thousand foot view and you're looking down like player to player. I think most people would go jamal. Adams probably not. Probably i don't i don't have a huge issue. I thought this list was pretty. Well thought out. And yeah again like you said four chiefs in the top twenty. I'm not saying bleep. I can't beat that a But we do have plenty more to say in. Just a few minutes will be back after the break with scott loring with to talk a little bit more about his training camp preview and matchups. I've lived save when i was living in massachusetts like we could get some pretty good stuff out there but the variety of fisher to get out here. I definitely like it a lot more. I become a huge scallop fan. Didn't grow up really eaten but have become that. I've also come to appreciate certain vegetables. Like brussels sprouts now the way that i like them. They're probably not any good for you. But i did not like you name of you throw it on there like it but i never like brussel sprouts until i got out here. Never really had avocado before. I got out here. I know that the avocado that i used to get out east. The few times that i tried it tended to be pretty brown by the time we got it. That's what it looked like. It's probably one of the reasons. It never rose up chain for me but coming out here. This is so fresh. Oh yeah it's another love like it really did introduce me to something different. And what's your favorite place in. La to be part of town or a thing. Read orly's failure lace in la. I'm going to give you an honest answer that 'cause i'm trying to come up with something more exotic than what. I'm going to say but anybody who really knows me knows that i'm being completely honest. My favorite place in l. a. Is jim where my daughter was playing volleyball. It's it's my favorite place to be right now it's my wife says i'm obsessed and i probably have given coach basketball coach for years and years and years. I needed to turn at energy somewhere and yeah. She's into volleyball in the same way. I was always really into basketball. I think he connect there too and it gives me a chance to kind of give back to her in ways. I think my dad would give back to me from basketball perspective. Even though it's volleyball and i don't know it as well as basketball obviously just from a sport culture perspective. I can give her a lot. That i think hopefully is helping her out so just watching her incorporate that stuff into her game and to her approach to what she does on the court and watching her play in watching her teams kind of jail and come together. That's a real treat for me so anytime going to chance to do that. I'm just in seventh heaven last question. You are the father of two daughters you have. I believe a fifteen and a twenty year old. "So young always fell his presence with me like i've always felt like there's there's something much bigger than me that has looked out for me For my whole life when things have gone crazy in off the rails in certain ways i always felt like there was an anchor. There was a beacon there that i can point to and it always seemed like the universal life was giving me a certain person for certain time in my life to be there to kind of help me out so you know my grandmother eternally almost but when i think about a father swayed right like soup. During those high school years he was he was really influential and sort of exposing the the light outside of justice outside of chicago making me see things beyond that countless coaches over the years of served in that role for me i think when i was much younger the basketball coach elementary school who he was also our math teacher like sixth grade math teacher but he was all he was a basketball coach there and he just he was always really positive. Male influence blackmail influence. That always had when i wound up in high school. He wound teaching biology at that same high school when he was a sophomore coach. There on a basketball team whatever site. I didn't have them again as a coach but he always took this interest in me and kids who look like me and really trying to help was to make sure we were getting through. The experience navigated it. Well thinking about winding up in williams and again. I didn't understand all this colleges at the time. But i wanna find out later he went to amherst and so he's just he saw it as his role kinda give back in that way and uses education. The way he did it was just such a great role model so again he was somebody who was there for a time of my life. Arthur rela ford is his name so he was a teacher at holy angels who then wound up being a biology teacher for years and years at at saint ignatius in chicago. So it's it's that it's having those people just over and over. There's always been someone. I can look at my my father-in-law before he passed away was he. Was that kind of person like he showed me a lot about how to raise a family and to be that man of the house for family. Like i didn't have that same example really growing right and didn't know how to do it. Didn't know what to do if he kinda gladly brought me on. It wasn't conversation we have. Can you show me this. It was just a an understand understanding. I think he had a where i was coming from. And he took it upon himself to do that for me. And i've always been open to have no sorts of influence so everywhere i've gone. There's been at least one person. It was just really helped me out. I love example with your grandmother after the basketball game. Because it's when people really love you they know that your worst moment. That's not you sometimes with art with you know. My wife knows that. When i'm hungry you know i can just say rational and i get frustrated because i can't find a parking space or something. But she does that. You just need a snack. This is going to mean that kind of look in that hug that your grandma gave you. I bet was really in hindsight. Really something special so go to williams. You played division three basketball. What was your experience there. And then how'd you find your way back into academia and a college mission from williams sure had had an amazing experience..

"You do find academically like that wouldn't be a problem but the classes would be a little bit bigger and you could get lost their. You know you could choose not to go and it wouldn't be a big deal and you would do fine. I think a place like williams at smaller you'd be noticed people would know if you weren't around and i think that's the kind of kicking you might so us an idea when i was like as a high school student. That really helped me to make my decision like wow. Here's this person that knows me really well looking at these places. I don't know a whole lot about what colleges and what college means a lot to me that that's a huge part of the reason i decided to williams. Yeah and what's his name or her name. Thomas swayed he was a priest there Got other than him were. There are other people in your high school years. That influenced you. Obviously this was influenced in terms of your college choice but were there other folks that lit a fire in you either academically or athletic. When i think about influences in that way to lines of reason for me here at one one is my paternal grandmother was such a big major influence for me so again. My dad died when i was seven. Lived in the same neighborhood that i grew up in and so long story short. My mom and i and my sister's dad because my mom wound up getting with somebody else. And so mom. And i my sister's data my little sister move to the suburbs. That wasn't working out for number of reasons for me. So i wound up moving back into the city and moved in with my grandmother so she has probably been the most influential figure in my life for sure just really inspire me to keep going all the title. Just the one person i could say not only was. I convinced that she loved me unconditionally. Her actions always supported that. Like always important of that. Can you give an example. yes this is. This is sort of a funny story. Southie with community. Know this already but it gets to a side of me like i am pretty laid back person you almost all the time. The one place that. I never was on the basketball court. Justice incense competitive drive. That was where i compartmentalize like all those base parts of me you know and my senior year of high school. I remember losing a game. It was one of our ice games. Lost the game and then it was right after the game to an ads. Anybody knows me knows..

"You know we so. Suddenly a lot of resources were pumped into making sure. We had a handful of extra sections and that we had more classes to twenty students so that we can rise back up and it. It wasn't one of those things. I like to see but i totally understood wind to make a decision like that. So that's a long way of saying that test scores when you think about easiest ways to drive up the academic piece for you. It is acceptance rate. Another one of those is it deals with how your test scores looked so from acceptance rate sample. You drive up apps so that you can admit your kids your acceptance improves. Everyone says wow. They're more selective. They must be better again. We know that that's not necessarily what it means but common calculus that's kind of what it is so there's that part of its deal with but then also would test. Scores colleges made a very calculated decision when they're looking at an applicant a for an applicant that they they're like they aren't crazy excited about if somebody that they just love and they think oh my gosh we have the student. Whatever the test scores are. They'll be fine with that like even if it's your test scores they can eat those and feel good about it if it's a kid of sort of on the cusp though. And they're looking at those test scores they may say. Is this one that we can eat like. Is this worth eating knowing that this test score is going to have some sort of negative impact on on our overall tests. Phone gets reported in places like us news and so again. You don't like for that to happen to be a part of it but it is interesting so you despite our our students flying over the midwest and only applying to schools on the coast. You grew up in the midwest. Where where'd you grow up. I grew up very proudly on the south side of chicago and whereabouts. And what did your parents do. So i i grew up sort of eighty seventh street between king driving cottage grove parents at such a great question. My my dad actually pass. When i was seven. Yeah and it's it would have come up so my dad passed when i was seven. He was a semi professional basketball player in the states in a professional basketball player overseas but at the time they probably made i think overseas maybe he would make like three thousand dollars a year so it wasn't as if that was lucrative at all He was he was an all american at the university of iowa but did not even there for four years. We didn't get his degree and so he always felt that he had been sort of used up by the division one basketball machine so that was the thanks for him. He always thought. If i were not going to be good enough to go pro he would never let me play division one and so that was always one of those things that back my mind so that was. That was my dad my mom. She's had her career the medical field she sort of and i guess you'd call a desk clerk. I don't know exactly what you would say. But sort of receptionist desk clerk. She did that for several decades in then was moved into sort of an office manager role for the last ten or fifteen years. And that's sort of what she's done. So dad went to college never got his degree. Mom never went to college. What kind of schooling did you have to public school or private school. Yeah so i never had the benefit of going to public school. Actually on my elementary school was it was a catholic school parochial school. There on the south side. I mean we had caused some trying to think. How many kids were there. But at the you know. We had three sections at every grade level k..

"'cause they're going to have to from your perspective and given that some of it has been lengthened the process but it's they say it's been mostly positive from the perspective of taking in more talented more interesting class. Is there an aspect of this that you think will stay. We'll next year's college. Admission process also be test optional. What's your hunch on that. Yeah i i have a good feeling that it will be for most of the schools that are currently test optional Some of that will depend on how much the country opens back up because when you think about a junior year is the prime year for a lot of kids for testing. So they've done a lot of their prep. Especially when i think about most harvard. Westlake kids that summer between sophomore junior year they do a lot of their prob so that junior year it kind of comes your testing and hopefully you can be done by the time you get to senior year. Don't have to worry about it if you have to take a year. Maybe you've got to take one more time without the benefit of being able to take these junior. Potentially it's thrown that part of the time linebacker. They're already some colleges who've come out and said regardless of what happens in the country next year we know that a lot of opportunities have being missed where already called in san. We're going to be option for next year. Yeah if the country opens up and kids are able to to test. I could see a number of schools peeling back on the test. Optional piece but i do know the philosophically there are a number of schools that are saying right now. We do like this allowed us to do. I think we can figure out processes to allow us to do this in a timely fashion. We want to stick with it. Got interesting so before we get to you. You wanted to talk about the. "Harvard like seniors on average somewhere between eight and twelve applications as the norm this year. It's fell a bit heavier than that. And i would probably guess we're in the ten to fifteen range student again. That's not a huge increase when you multiply that out among all high schools across the country the world you can imagine what's happening with all these colleges now without without the benefit of the new. Yeah really admission right. As is the most highly selected colleges had huge increases in absolutely absolutely. So when you think about so. Let's actually jump into that. So that gets into the test. Optional piece from everywhere. It doesn't matter what they're testing was lie either. They couldn't test or they were able to test in weren't particularly pleased with their testing if they're coming from a school and they've got great grades and they're taken great courses. They're doing really well. But maybe in the past whatever their test scores were things that would make them as competitive at a particular institution. That kid can apply to that school. Now they've got just as equal shot as everybody else. i think. That's one of the things as we were talking earlier about. Kids not being able to go out and visit colleges and not being able to discern so that nuance between different schools. Instead of saying okay. i'm interested in. Let's go back to the example a medium size college in around the city instead of saying well. These are twenty five schools that fit that. I'm going to apply to all twenty five kit. Used to say wow out of that. Twenty five these five or six really feel like me and so they can tailor list now without that benefit there just the planet across the board to all the schools that fit a particular category for them and then that ratchets up the anxiety and what have also seemed to was at the schools that are really seeing the influx of apps are the ones on the coasts versus the ones that are steady. Maybe a little bit upper even in decline tend to be in the mid west and someone in the south and so our our finance. Yeah what's explaining that the belief is that you're talking about applications that are coming from more densely populated areas those more densely populated areas. Politically might lead sir way and believe that the midwest. The south isn't the place for me you know we haven't heard that from a number of kids but there have been enough years said things like. Oh i'm coming from california. I know that i want to go. East fly over the midwest. To get him he's coast if they stop in the midwest so stop in chicago if they're gonna stop in chicago. Then maybe they'll go to saint louis if we'll go to columbus do some different things around there to make a more robust trip and out stopping in chicago right now. Kids are still applying to the places in chicago but those places around they would naturally been able to see on a bigger trip. They're not seeing those places and they're they're having beliefs about what it must be there politically and they're just not even apply it again. That's an area that's out there and when they're not able to see it in person answering see kids that might look like them or know that even at a conservative university there might be a young democrats club or at a very liberal uc berkeley. There might be a young republicans club or whatever not to go there and see it. The stereotypes might yeah override. Anything else does..

"Breaks up the monotony. So i think that part has been good. I i've been doing a lot of meditating. Lots of meditate so both the classic variety. Meaning you know seated on a meditation cushion and or you know planet tibetan singing bowl and and then there are the more life integrated types of meditating like cooking for example for me as a very meditative exercise. I i love to cook. Yeah i definitely enjoy doing that. Picking up picking up some new things to try to right now because it's a little bit chillier outside I've been trying to get into making some good homemade soups. So it must the ones that i'm making must be pretty good 'cause bowls yanni than keep asking me to make every week so that must be pretty good. The cocaine for me is really meditative exercise and then just reading more young. I've had a lot more time to do that. So some really good books. Over last year. That i've read so getting this sort of what this means for the work you do at harvard westlake Obviously the pandemic has changed everything about our lives pretty much but it's really changed college admission and you are the head of the upper school. Deans at harvard. Westlake and So i i love to talk a little bit about what this has meant. I from the student perspective. What does it mean for a student going through this process and thinking about the schools to which they're going to apply and then later we'll get to kind of what it means for a commissioned officer kind of sitting there at some school kind of looking at applications but let's start first with with students. How has it changed for the students in your care. Yeah that's that's such a good question. I think from the students i i. It's hard to imagine what it's like being in their shoes right like there's so many things that are going on that are causing their own stresses and on top of that. They're trying to manage this college joining college. Application college research process in ways that they've never seen anybody do for several several decades it links virtual knowledge tours and all the information that kissing research online. That stuff is fine if there really is no way to replace the benefits of being able to see a place for themselves and envision themselves on campus sure there was a time. We're very few got to visit college campuses before they actually went to those places but the pendulum has swung so far in the in the other direction that now it's made a return to those early days much more difficult as a result i think students after rely a lot more human resources. They have so like their deans or the family of friends who have gotten to know them really well and so say a student comes and says okay. Cj i am interested in medium size college in or around urban area. I can come up and they can come up with a list of five to ten colleges right in all of them. And i throw out some of the places that fit into that into that space. It's northwestern vanderbilt. Wash u. carnegie-mellon. Tufts johns hopkins case western. "Taking the very high end fantasy glory impossible. But what if pick your love this? And this is levian bell the Kansas City Chiefs. Yes, let it happen. I let it happen. They were just a weren't. They just about one level away from a Super Bowl title last year. Wouldn't you say? Bruce worth just eleve- bell away. Yes. I mean, they almost got there with Damian Williams, and I would dance a beautiful dance on the fantasy grave of Damian Williams. If left bell were to go to Kansas City now lev bell at his current asking price would only cost the chiefs about two two and a half times more per yard than any other running back in football. They also investment they also need to find an extension for tyreek hill. They've got gotta find an extension for Chris Jones. This is a near impossibility. But what if I mean the question was what are you most want to see happen? I wanna see what Patrick Mahomes does with Sammy Watkins Levy on bell. Tyreek hill and Travis Kelsey. I think you saw it was what he did with cream. Yeah. You're right. You're right Damien Williams. But that is that's full man from the Mancha that isn't impossible. Now, the reason why the even comes up is on the basis of. Whenever of any team has a quarterback on a rookie contract. They have the opportunity to exploit the the capital positions. But they do have talented players need extensions is not likely to happen left. Bell to can't hear Helms already going into your three. Let's take a step back and just say how about love bell to a good team. That's what I'd most like to see happen and free agency have belly. Luckily that bell to Indianapolis. No bell to Kansas City. Love bell to somebody that is above five hundred. I think the only I think the only good team if you're talking last year, the only good team would be Houston. What about two more? I don't think they'll all they won't go pay. Yeah. All but they would not be the biggest knife twist in vision the teams with the cap money that wanna make the run and need the big name or probably teams like the jets and the raiders which leave. Yeah, volume. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Thanks, guys. Appreciate
