"We're talking about Devin Leary who starting the most recent season was considered he was at NC state. He was considered one of the better quarterbacks in the country and then he got hurt and the whole season came undone. So I think with Cohen, he's got a chance to be at that level. I mean, we'll leverage right now he's considered one of the best prospect. The schedule is really complimentary. I don't think you could it's quite frankly when you look at ball state eastern Kentucky in Akron. I mean, that's one of the most inauspicious beginnings I've ever seen at Vanderbilt is your first real test and then Florida, Georgia. I mean, Kentucky's got a chance to get really a really fast start. You know, they do have Alabama. In November, that is a really intriguing game. It comes in a bad time for Alabama. Not a great time for Kentucky either after Tennessee and Mississippi but it's a really, I don't like the beginning of that schedule because it's just hard to maintain a lot of momentum. However, I do think it does set up well for a new quarterback making his first trip around the SEC. Ryan is up next in Illinois. Hey Ryan, hey, Paul, first time caller. I just had a few questions about Alabama basketball. Sure. I just wondering for the semifinals that Alabama's going to probably be up against Tennessee. I was wondering, do you think they have to be Tennessee to get in the tournament? Well, I think what Alabama is facing this week more than anything is the number one seat overall. I don't think they can get that right now. I think that may have slipped away the other day, but you win three games here and somebody else Houston, UCLA, you see, you know, who knows what's going to happen during conference tournaments, but I think Alabama is pretty well guaranteed a number one seed. They'll play next week and Thursday and Saturday in Birmingham, which is a tremendous advantage for them. Darren is up next in Missouri, hello, Darren. My question is, I'm Missouri. Do you think they are going to get hurt from the double by? Or that's going to help them, which is a streaky. You know, you don't know who's going to show up. It's a good question. But I think when you're Missouri, not to extoll any more preys on getting escapes and he's already gotten, but he deserves it all. I mean, that's such an amazing accomplishment when you consider how chaotic this program has been in recent years. Thank you very much for the call. Mark is up next in Tuscaloosa, hey mark. Hey, Paul, how you doing today? We're doing great. Thank you. Hey, you remember, since you're a Nashville, you remember country boy Eddie used to do a little something like this here and call. Oh, sure. Yeah, no, I remember any well. Well, hey, I wonder if you don't mind, I want to do a little trip to the woman that died and took to lose and to, you know, you're right there in Nashville and country music and this won't take just a second and I think it'll mean a lot to the people of your show. That's okay. Give it a shot. Okay, thank you, sir. No, that was memorable. Dan is up next. Hey Dan, go right ahead. Thanks, bob. Don't even know what this possible you can even go there, but I think Brian Kelly has got into Nick Saban's head. I really do. You know, I didn't. I think it started with when he was out. Coach. In the last ball game without you and Alabama. And it goes to the other coaches, you know? They replaced their coaches. That's hard for me to, I mean, I appreciate your sentiments. We've been hit three hours another hour to go. We are live in Nashville. Thank you for listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. "Couple of days. Your success. Thank you so much. From Missouri state as we head to the break, we'll be back in Nashville right after this. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. 50 minutes will preview the games a little bit later on. And your phone calls at 855-242-7285. A myth is up next in Kentucky. Hey miss good afternoon. Hey, man. How you can hear me, Paul? Yes, I can. Thank you. Yeah, I have a question. Obviously, I'm a big UK fan. I've always been a big UK fan growing up. How do you think they're going to fare in the tournament SEC tournament and through this? NCAA tournament. I'm pretty upbeat. In fact, it was funny during the break. I had a chance to run into Matt Matt Jones from up there who hosts a show statewide and he felt pretty good as well. I think Kentucky's just playing at a high rhythm right now that you always have to be a little nervous and a tournament because one thing Kentucky has not been is consistent. They have played consistently better than they were in January, but I think it was Damian fishback who said earlier or somebody, the injury situation, the health of the team is not great. Yeah, I think that's one thing that worries me as well. I'm not sure about the case

"See it, it scrolls across each and every day. My advice has been to the team for weeks now that it's out of our control. That part is. But we've been in position to control our own destiny. And that's what we kept talking about the last four or 5 games is this is where you want to be to play meaningful games down the stretch where every game means something and certainly with the situation we're in every game. It felt like game 7 for quite some time and hopefully that's going to help us tomorrow night, but we're well aware of where we sit and where we stand and again the bottom line is we control, I think our final destination. Yeah, I think the better question to a coach is you can deal with it, but you can't tell your players not to pay attention because they are going to pay attention. Are they not? Yeah, for sure. I mean, what I've told them is don't get caught up in it. Don't be spending hours on it. We're human. I don't expect you not to notice it just like I said, but at the same time, you know, we need to focus on what's important and that's us and our preparation and our practice and obviously how we play the game. And, you know, I'm not around them 24/7, but the vibe that I get is there in a good place that way. So back to the back to the elephant in the arena here. Clearly tomorrow night's big, you win, but do you feel like there's a number or do you feel like, I mean, do you have any sense of where you really are versus where you're projected? The only people that really know are the people that are going to be in the room. Right. Right. I mean, that's the deal. There's tons of projections. There's tons of if you get into the nitty Gritty of percentages if you win one game or two games or zero games at this point in the season, I think that's just a

"Look at it. I will. I guess he was a man. I guess at the BBC. At the time. Oh yeah. For sure. And he says there was the tornado warning issue from the stevia Birmingham and he said it literally could have took the lives of 77,000 people because there wasn't any way of getting the word to the people at the stadium. And he said the tornado literally comes right over the state, the developing tornado came over the stadium. But it later formed into a big tornado just a couple of miles later, which hit the eastern part of the state. And yeah, no, I'll definitely check that out. Hey, thank you so much, Chris. What are memory? And so what 40 almost 40 years ago? And I remember I remember the PA announcer Simpson pepper making that announcement. We'll take a short break. We are live in Nashville, continuing with your phone calls, more guests, including Christians, from Mississippi state. He'll join us right here. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. Wednesday of the SEC tournament where Bridgestone in Nashville. And we're really happy to be rejoined by Christians, the head basketball coach of mister state and coach. We said something as I saw you and it's eerie to think about the last time I saw you, we were in starkville in October. You were about to start the season and you followed Mike leech on our set. Yeah, as I was walking up to the set, that's what I was thinking about, that my only interview that I've had with the famous Paul finebaum was in starkville and that fall day and I remember telling you before we went on air like, hey, I'd rather not follow coach leech anymore. "Hey, Chris. Thank you. Yes, sir. I just wanted to call in. You had an episode back in January, sir, where you talked about coach coach brown's deer were a lot of fans called in with their memory of coach coach grant and whatever special memory that they had and I didn't get a chance to call in at that particular time, but my father, he took me to my first Alabama game in 1978 at legion field against LSU. And I was ten years old and thought I was on top of the world as my first game. Yesterday was the anniversary of my father's death. 13 years ago and he then sent me to my first iron bowl, 1981. 315th game. And I had a special relationship with my father. He joined military services and then he was a football basketball official for about 20 years and worked hard to provide for his family, especially during the holidays. And. He took me to several iron bowls and that has just become my favorite time of the year. I think a lot of people that are probably in their mid 50s like I am or older, they would probably be willing to say that a lot of the iron balls in the 80s were probably some of the greatest iron Bros played. The 81 82 in I know the 83 are involved known as the tornado some iron bowl. Yeah. Well, I mean, listen, you keep going. I mean, 83, 84, 85, 86. There's never been a better stretch of games in my career. Every one of those games was epic. And I'll say this before, I hang up the 83 game, I keep just thinking about and I did research on it. We were at that 83 game, and a lot of people refer to it as the 2019 game for a reason. The bad storm came up. We were sitting in the north end zone facing the south. Yeah, but by the way, Chris, there was literally a tornado warning in the vicinity. They announced it. Now today, the whole stadium would have evacuated. You could not have played a game, the whole place would have cleared out, but I'll never forget. I looked around. I was in the press box. I never saw a single person leave that game. And it was the most incredible thing because when the public address announcer made the announcement,

"Get all these bands walking out of the dome with their heads down. And then they'll know it's over. That's what we're waiting on. No more excuses, I guess they'll turn their excuses to save in and then here comes a revolving door of the coaches, you know, kip and start dabo, Jimbo, whoever they gonna get a shot. But we just can't wait. For December next year. I'll hang up and listen, thanks, Paul. Thank you very much. I hear you Phil. Good to hear from you. John is up next. In Tennessee. Hey, John. Hey, Paul. Thanks for taking my call. Thank you. Good afternoon. Hey, Paula. Now I'm Alabama fan, but I live here in Tennessee. About 30 miles from Thompson bowling. And we had a great time at constable and arena. I was just happy to see a top ten game for the first time in my entire life between the two teams. And but there was something that bothered me while I was at the game, the fans started chanting FU Bama, just over and over and over again. And they finally, they came on and addressed it and said, you know, no profanity was allowed. And it just kept going on. And, you know, I turned to a guy that was behind me, he was from Tuscaloosa and I said, hey, do we do this to our fans and colon coliseum? And he goes, sadly enough, yes. And I thought, well, what about all the people that are there that have all their children with them? Is that something

"855-242-7285. I realized we've had a number of guests. We'll try to get as many calls as we can and check in with Phil in Valdosta, Georgia. Hey Phil. Hey Paul, how old is coach golden looking first? And I know on TV looks kind of like a red shirt sophomore, but does he look that young in person? You know, I tried not to make say that because I have a feeling other people have. But yeah, I mean, he looked like he might be the graduate assistant when you're out of school. It looks like it on TV. Look, I just wanted to call real quick. I tuned in late yesterday and called legends hit on the sets and I like legend. I think he's very entertaining. But I thought it was just funny why he beat up on sets and I mean, knocked them off the mountain? Correct. I mean, legend apparently is forgotten that fourth quarter. All right, I mean, shouldn't they be talking about how good he was? I mean, about how a walk on dethroned Bama. I just thought it was kind of funny. How they just can not get the sets and things, especially legend out of his mind, but Paul, most of us dog fans, we just can not wait for next December. "Because everyone and we do a talk show where everybody thinks they know what the NIL is meant to every sport. How do you navigate that and how different I realize you're in basketball, we talk you hear anion on football on a constant basis. What is it like doing in that space right now? It's challenging. You know, I think all the unknowns is what makes it challenging. There's no, there's no governors on this market. It's an unregulated market. There's a lot of different ways to look at it. And we as coaches can procure these deals for these young men. So that makes it really, really challenging because it's an important piece in the recruiting process. For a lot of these student athletes that are figuring out where they want to go. So my message to my staff is to try to just educate ourselves as best as we can, be resources for the student athletes through the recruiting process. Grateful to be at a place like Florida where Gainesville is a great market, a place that really wants to support their student athletes when given the opportunity. And we're just going to try to be ahead of it the best we can. And hopefully over the next year or two, there is a little more regulation. So we have a little more information when trying to make these pretty important decisions. I won't ask you, I will ask you to hold your breath on the regulation. Trust me, I know. But I can't tell you how much fun this has been to get a chance to let you meet a few more people. I know you've done this many, many times since landing in Florida, but we've enjoyed saying hello and hopefully a long stay here at Nashville. I appreciate you having me on and it's great to meet you in person, my man. Thank you very much. Scott golden. No longer the new coach, but I'm going to keep saying that at least until this tournament is over at the university of Florida. We'll take a short break. We're back to Nashville after this. You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. Hey, we're back at Nashville as inching closer to the official beginning of the SEC tournament a couple of news items to pass along. Jim behaim, 47 years as Syracuse's head coach, a national championship and numerous final fours. In constant bickering with the media is over, dis announced that he has gone and will finally retire. "The absolute success. And I know that it's been a while since this program went back to back national championships. That's still pretty amazing. Absolutely. When you think about it, they seem pretty happy right now with the way the direction of the program is going, but the expectations are going to be through the roof. You know, that fallen before you go. Talk about approaching the job and dealing with what is expected in Gainesville. Yeah, no, it's all valid, what you're talking about. There's a lot of high expectations in Gainesville at Florida. I understand that, you know, what coach Donovan was able to do in his time there was incredible. He really just raised the level at the program and obviously sustained it for significant period of time with the back to back national championships, but that runny had on the back end was pretty special too with Patrick young and all those guys getting to final fours and just competing. And so that pressure is a privilege is the way I look at it and obviously we had a great year at San Francisco last year it presented some opportunities for me and my family, but when Florida became an option and this was the one that I felt like we could win national championships here. And so as a coach, as a competitor, you want to put yourself in a situation where you can give yourself the best chance. And I thought Florida would do that and obviously I think we've done a good job building the foundation. We have some really good pieces that we're going to be able to continue to build off of. And I'm excited for the challenge. A lot of times coach Garland, when someone comes into the SEC, their mouths open, just in awe of all the places that you go, you've already been here. You've had that experience and an extremely high level is built as Bruce built a program that ultimately went to the final four. What was his first trek around the SEC like for you? Yeah, it was awesome. First of all, to your point, just a level of competitiveness on a night tonight basis is something that I don't think many are ready for or can prepare for before getting back into the league. We had some great teams in the WCC Gonzaga, obviously playing for national championships, saint Mary's BYU, some really competitive teams, but the depth and breadth of this league and the fact that if you don't have it on a given night, you're just going to get beat. There's no question about it. And the mental toughness that you have to exhibit to be consistent in this league, we finished 99 in the SEC and I'm telling you, it was a war just to get to that level. So it's a huge challenge. It's something that's going to keep you on your toes on a day to today basis. And something that if you're not prepared for, you're going to get kicked in the butt pretty hard. I would like to get your thoughts on recruiting right now

"Obviously for you, you win what four straight and before. You can call this Easter big success. Is there any way to approach a term or like this other than here's a game we'll worry about the next game after that? Yeah, no, I mean, one game at a time obviously for us. We got a long way to go to get where we want in terms of making the tournament now. With what's happening over the past couple of weeks. But with that being said, we beat this team a couple of weeks ago or a month or two ago. And if we get that one, then we get a crack at Alabama. Anything can happen. My first year as an assistant in this league back with Bruce, and here's first year, we were not very good. And we won three games in the SEC tournament before losing to Kentucky in the semifinals. So I've been a part of something where some crazy things have happened and we're hoping to do something similar this week. You mentioned Bruce and everyone's associate with various coaches throughout their career. Here certainly he certainly the one that we know the best. In the SEC, how did that relationship begin? You know what? I played with his son Steven on a USA macabre team, the Jewish Olympics, so to speak. And Bruce came out to our training camp back in 2006. I was a junior at saint Mary's college at the time. And that's when I first met him and then he coached me in 2009 when I was playing point guard for him on the USA macabre team in Israel. And that's really where our relationship really grew. And when he got back into auburn, he brought me down from Columbia. And it's been a pretty crazy 8 years since then. I know I'll probably be the last person to mention this because I'm sure others have but Columbia auburn is a rather strange Utah. You know, I had taken care of my high academic low major basketball wanted to go to the high major level. And then obviously being a San Francisco is kind of a great blend of both, but I've definitely been able to be do a couple different unique places over the course of my career. Yeah, upper Manhattan to Lee county. I don't think there's a direct flight from Laguardia. That's definitely not. Now Bruce had to pick me up in Atlanta and drive me down there. That's for sure. In terms of that relationship,

"You mean the guy that was on Greg Marshall staff and worked for will wait, that guy's going to get to New Mexico state. That was part of in back channels. That was part of it. And now it looks even worse. Well, in the connection there, he and jans were tight. He and Christians. They worked together as well. So I always assumed that was the connection there. Yes. Like, it's Greg hire the next Chris jans. Let's see. And he is not. He has now been fired, which was expected the rest of the staff is on administrative leave. The president of the university fired him. Ongoing speculation, if there will be a change at AD, there will be a new president, that president is also leaving the summer. So we really could have from the top down change at New Mexico state and that's to be honest, that's what needs to happen here. The details in the police report, yeah, they're heinous and there's a lot to be figured out with that program. I also have stuff on the whack in the court report. Because it stopped at season, there were 6 games in the league that needed to be accounted for. They ultimately decided to forfeit those games. I'm not going to run you down the whole thing. Just go read it. Our off season listeners will remember, I broke a story last off season where the whack is seating its conference tournament, not on conference wins and losses. It is seating its tournament based on how you performed against your schedule for the entirety of the season. The reason why is it's got a new commissioner, Brian Thornton, he's trying to incentivize his teams to schedule as best they can. So it gives the whack its best chance at its best team in the tournament. You get a team in the tournament that wins obviously, you get more money, it's better representation for the league. Coincidentally enough, New Mexico state did this a year ago. It won in the tournament. That's 12 seen upset number 5 seed. Yukon there. So the details are all in that, but the forfeits fortunately mean that the standings of the wack and their whack resume seating system, no team jumped another because of this. The forfeits were automatically awarded and basically all regarded of a value of a home win. Thornton details that within, but what could have been from just a purely competitive standpoint as standing standpoint heading into the tournament, a team just simply opting to not play the remainder of its season. That actually can provide some real logistical hurdles. Looks like the whack is handled that pretty well overall. And you still got to get the auto bid by winning it. So it doesn't matter if you're the number one seat or the number 8 or the number 12, you have to win the games to get the auto bid. This is just setting up the league for its best chance at having its best team. Went out in a 12 team bracket. Boy, the sun's getting bright here in New York City. Can you tell? It would like this 55 minutes ago. Now my back's hot. It was a little bit like that. Yesterday. I mean, before we preview this game's going.

"To rewrite that scene to be maybe in like a pool and someone's backyard and they hop the fence is like no it has to be the lake because i also wanted to incorporate chicago itself director and i really wanted to showcase these different elements of chicago. And she's like khalid hundred daughters so people can die of stopping ridiculous. Nobody's gonna die. They have polar bear swin on and then the reason we cut out so fast of that scene is because if we held one frame longer were both running out of the water really. It's it's it's cold tacos fucking call. They don't call it the windy city. My gosh There's constantly stories out there about like actors directors producers who are losing their shit right. You seem like a very like down to earth person your complete and utter bitch. I don't know But like have you ever experienced that thing you looked at the moment and said like oh shit yeah people exist like this or have you been really lucky in this world because it feels like there's power hunger and like ego happening a lot in the world of acting and directing yeah and film festivals to film. Festivals are scary to me. Yeah no. I definitely experienced that And i think for me it just really depends on the situation in how i'm able to respond to it because sometimes i have to think like does this matter in house is really affecting me in. What is my goal here and my goal is to get the shot. Get to hello. Whatever it is that i'm trying to do in that moment and i'm somebody i have a really really good attitude and in pretty level headed until i'm not and then as soon as not the gloves come off and like i'm a fire. Breathing dragon really. But i really try and hold it together publicly so that like i've got that since the smile plastered on like how are you. I appreciate you thank you so much. This is great and like make it all about the team team team and then like privately. I'll just go and like have a moment. You know by myself or like our call my sister or my mom and just laid you know like screaming down on the phone and healthy. That's very like still process it but like be in society. Yeah yeah i definitely have my like meltdown moment. So a lot of like what you see goes mckenzie. I i understand that. We're just like michael. Douglas falling down the us. And when i was younger i didn't always my emotions as in check as they do now. But i've just done a lot of work myself to get there and know that like you can have those moments. But it's better if they're in private yeah. A friend of mine told me one time. And i was getting like really really annoyed by it and taking kind of personally And my friend told me she was like well. It's not the the the the people that disappoint you. It's your expectations of them. That do and so. I just now try and always kind of check. Whatever my expectations and not just expect every male person in the industry trying to fuck you gotcha. Yeah that's definitely expect that right. Yeah do you have. You had moments where people don't like. I had an all american really actually actually a background while he was totally back earnings like a featured extra who are not gonna name names But his his if he was in a sex addict group that these are going to be better. He's not in the sex adequate but he's outside of the sex out of group He was a featured extra and he's an older gentleman and at the end of the of the rap. We were running from one scene to the next. And i had to get out there and this is our our last day that we were shooting and this this thing that he's in it's it's a pretty significant scene and getting out of there to get to the next route which is an exterior and we're dealing with light and stuff. He and a few of the other like background feature background players. They asked if they could take a photo with me after a. Yeah sure no problem. And it was like three men and so he took a photo with them and they're all like oh thank you so much. This is such a wonderful experience in ukraine. Bob you the normal farewells. And in my mind. I'm like go gotta go but i'm you know i'm playing nice. You know take the photo. And i give all of them like a hug and this one guy. He reaches his hand under the jacket of my costume and he grabs my ass. And i'm not talking like a little like pat. I'm talking full hand cup. Grab my ass. And i walked away a normal. Like you would think that that moment you motherfucker. D- me and slapping and go into mackenzie mode and i actually went into the opposite. I sort of like the froze for a second. And i turned away. And i had this moment of. Did that just happen. Like did that. just happen. And i looked at him and he had this look like like it was just. I'll never forget because it was this moment of like this. This power play like you might have been like this and the scene in if i say like what it was in the scene. We'll give it away. But i got you here. Oh my and evil is really maniacal. Yeah i like turned around and my producer was there and she sought in her eyes bugging out of her head. But we both are in this moment of like if we caused a scene. We can't cause a scene because there's crew and everyone's moving around. There were so many moving parts transitioning between one the next we were also in in a space that has other businesses that were actually working and we had like the most finite amount of hours to get the final shot. That was an exterior and so we just had to go. It was his thing where she was like do batch yet. That just happened and yeah. It's almost hard to believe that stuff like that still does happen to turn. Yeah the high of the metoo conversation was like hey asshole. Are you not hearing the conversation that's happening and it did feel a little bit of like know 'cause it was my project is my my shoot. I am the writer director creator. Like and the actor in this show but it was almost his way of trying to take my power off. That is so. I just don't see the end game in that. I just don't see it like what what does he do. You think you're gonna look at him and go. You know what i'm down. Let's do this and then if you're going to be like the opposite would be like that's the most insulting thing ever right.
