Huge voter turnout expected despite virus, political rancor

"Nearly one hundred million Americans had already voted before today meaning it could take some time to get an official tally elections officials warn the millions of absentee ballots could slow the count St Anselm college professor Chris Gayle Dearie says the breakdown of who votes to win could also make it hard to gauge the results later today folks were waiting to vote today are more likely to be a Republican and the folks who voted early meaning in states like Pennsylvania that release in person vote totals first it will look like trump is beginning with a big lead Algieri says the question is how much that changes as more results come out final tallies in some key battlegrounds could take days Sager made Ghani Washington

"-gratulations to Amelio. That's awesome. well-done and a good reminder to all of us pay attention to what people ask you about. When started blogging more specifically about his certification process, the test specific tests that he was studying for. Then you know that post got noticed and all of sudden people started coming to the site much more so than when he was just writing about my reflections of being a first year teacher for whatever now I also thought I was looking at the more. His domain was what was it something about Texas? Oh. Yes I Texas teachers, Dot Com. And that's interesting because you might say, well, he's only valid for teachers in Texas is this test offered elsewhere and I'm not sure what the answer to that is but I did see from our other research that they're over three hundred, thousand teachers in Texas one for every sixteen students and the state still considers itself in a teaching shortage with an additional forty thousand positions, still open as of June twenty twenty. So all those teachers are not computer science teachers studying for this particular exam, but the point is it's not a tiny market. It's a market that's big enough that he is able to sell what is it about a thousand dollars a month or so? In these guides and of course, now he's trying to branch out and go further and such. So a lot you can do with this. This is a very similar business model to what I started with unconventional guide. It's more than a decade ago I'm not running that business now, but it's fun to see you know different case studies examples of how that model is still very much applicable It's still possible. The whole question is just how do you find the right topic? How do you recruit the right people and through all the different stories? I'm sharing with you. I'm hoping to give you some examples so I hope this is helpful but remember inspiration good but inspiration what action is better. Should this cupcake baker go all-in or move on?

"This is from Houston. Texas and I've been listening to the show for about a year and a half. Now My side Hustle is baking I'm a homemaker and I specialize in custom, cakes, cupcakes and good old fashioned cookies. My question is how do you know when it's time to go on and move on? It's been a struggle for me for the last five years of trying to my baking business while working being a mom and being a way is a struggle and indicator. I have so many ideas. I want to pursue, but I don't WANNA burn out. I can't wait to hear from you. Chris, thanks so much. Thank you so much for the call. Thank you for listening in Houston Texas. We actually talked about this question on my youtube channel recently If you're not watching youtube, dot, com slash Chris Gayle Abo- one of those days. When we looked at Irish question, I am not doing daily now, but I am still doing at least weekly. I'm so go check it out. YOUTUBE DOT COM Slash Chris! Gallo all right. Here's the thing. Burn out is not necessarily an indicator that it's time to go all in, so you might actually find yourself even more stressed out if the business isn't economically viable, and now all of a sudden instead of it being a side thing, it's something that you're depending on. Remember that one of the benefits of assign also is that you can take risks without depending on the outcome to be immediately favorable like if it doesn't work right away, that's okay. You have time to tweak to adjust even to change to something totally different so I think generally speaking the time to go all in his. When your side hustle is becoming a real business, it's showing signs of growth. You can count on sustainable income from it for the next six months, and you also believe that. If you put more time and effort into it, it will do even better. So in case, it sounds like she's not sure about that I. Don't know that she has to necessarily abandoned the project, but if you are feeling burnt out about something, maybe it's good to take a pause and once again having it as a US. Also, it will take a pause because if you're depending on it. Of course then you wouldn't be able to. Whatever you WanNa make sure you avoid a situation where something that began as a fun thing where you had lots of energy behind it. You're like. Oh, this is creative. It's different. Turns into something that actually produces anxiety or stress, so if you aren't sure sometimes having more time to put into the project isn't necessarily a blessing might actually need to do something different

"And this is the program that attempts to give you a little bit of financial advice during a very trying time if you've got a financial question give us a shout ask Jill Jill on money dot com if you're just joining us we are re playing an interview that we did with Chris Gayle about author of side hustle and in this segment we thought it was just going to be important to help you figure out how you can develop your own side hustle and I think more than ever this is great advice for all of us to have something on the side here's more of our interview with Chris Guilbeau why did you write this book side hustle show I learned over time not everybody is like me right not everybody is unemployable well not everybody is a failed car thief about to think about that the next book mmhm this is so last year I had another book out and did a tour in thirty cities it's really interesting because I had this whole message about like how to find the work you're born to do and I noticed that people responded disproportionately to this whole part of having a side hustle I talked about that for like one minute of my thirty minute stump speech is the only thing people care about really thirty percent of questions afterwards right way to make you tell me more about that and interesting I've been writing about this side hustles you know for eight years in different ways but I do feel like this is this renewed interest in at ten and so I really was like I do a lot of different stuff and going all over the map I have ADD but I wanted to focus on this since I was like this year I'm gonna write the silence will book a two hundred city tour I have a podcast you know where every single day by getting a story sure it's called side hustle school seven days a week nine minutes today I love this book okay I'm reading this dude look at the amount of bike page you actually hide this and look at this like I'm sorry read the books also thank you for so the reason why I like it is that I can completely relate to this idea of Mike I kind of love the idea of us I mean I am evidence of this site so I have like sort of a main job and a bunch of side hustles right and so what I also really enjoyed was the fact that you didn't put the pressure on to make this like you have to be an entrepreneur and develop your Harvard Business School planning broken venture funding and that about so much pressure in fact you probably shouldn't actually right right it's more than just you don't have to do that and you probably shouldn't do that and so and and in this economy which is strange right now because it's sort of sort of strong but not really strange economy like the stock market's going up yet peoples have suffered all this anxiety and uncertainty and lead to the job market is not strongly regardless of of numbers it's really interesting because people feel a lack of security and so what can a side hustle do to relieve that anxiety thank them so I don't think I gave you a good answer before I give you a complete answer of like why did this you know this book is not for entrepreneurs this book is for people out there who have day jobs and are busy and they don't have a lot of time but they love the idea of investing in themselves somehow maybe that's why the listening to the show right now and what they need is a blueprint right they need to know like step by step how to actually do this because maybe I tried before and failed or maybe on like on the outside looking in see other people that are doing this but you know what should I do should I go and participate in the gig economy like absolutely not in my opinion but we can we can come to that which should create an asset for yourself which is what this this book is about what SIA that's what can do is you know first of all the extra money that's great was that right but also confidence security empowerments the sense of being able to look at something and say I made this thing and I've got a job maybe I like my job that's great maybe I don't like my job but that's that's what it is for now you know I need that for my mortgage you know it cetera I've got this other thing that I am cultivating on my own and I look forward to it and when I get the PayPal notification that somebody has sent me money it just feels really good so it's a back up plan more options ultimately it's about more freedom and you know I love the idea of freedom because so often you know we do calls on the show so people calling and we'll talk about this and I we say like we you know if you just do this you'll have more freedom or you'll have the opportunity and I think that that's the part of the side hustle then so appealing to me in that yes you know you can make a great living working for a company there's awesome benefits and you know I'm the first one to remind everyone like don't just walk away from your job because there's like some great stuff you're getting also a sense of control and it is interesting we recently interviewed Tim Hartford from the financial aspect and I was asking him about you know how did he start writing books because he's so incredibly prolific he was in I had a job I really like it was fine but on the side I was reading this book called the undercover economist it was so it was like so pleasurable because you know what a crappy day at work I was every day but that if I had a crappy day I can go home I could write five hundred words and exactly what you said I feel like I had done something for me yep and he didn't even think about monetizing and religious was doing it because he needed an outlet right and I think that's also a piece of this that is really great about like doing something that's different apart from your from your day job for sure he made a little sticker shot of the gig economy sure so what's the difference between being part of the gig economy verses exploring a side hustle right so I mean first things I think the side hustle phrases kind of you know you back with us in the culture and people are talking about all the time but they have different definitions about it so some people might talk about the gig economy is like this in my side hustle I think the problem with with that is driving for uber driving for lift something like that TaskRabbit you know Airbnb all that kind of stuff it's like a part time job nothing wrong with having a part time job like we've all done that in our lives at different points but all those things that we just talked about security backup plan freedom none of those things really exist there with over you can set your own schedule good benefits it is good yeah but your income is capped you know there's competition you're relying entirely on their platform or ecosystem they can take that away at any time where as with something that you're creating for yourself like the income is unlimited you can go on lots of different directions you can do all kinds of different things are just so much more creativity as well to get your point that's my best my my kind of beef about that I don't think it's terrible I just think people shouldn't think of it as being an entrepreneur which is kind of how we were patches it over is like this is gonna be like your gateway to freedom in not really driving people around you're performing a service nothing wrong with that as I said but it's not what I'm trying to help people do so what also interested me is that in reading the book and tell these really wonderful stories that it seemed that there were a lot of times where people are doing something at work mmhm Mike okay I'm doing something that seems valuable to others in my workplace and that was the germ of the idea of the side hustles okay let's talk a little bit about that some of those stories like yeah we don't think that I was thinking about that was teaching people how to use software the database yeah eight a basic idea he's a database administrator I just met him last week in Colorado at that book events awesome idea is name is Dan and he he works for a hospital he's a database administrator and his first side hustle was tutoring people who needs need help with the specifics offer Microsoft access and that was great he was making like sixty to eighty dollars an hour you know doing tutoring but then he learned of a second need through that process some people actually you know we're connected to companies organizations that needed custom jobs essentially so part of that how fun thing about Saddam so sometimes it can lead you to something even greater than what you initially match and you know tutoring it's it's great you know but it's it's not that original of an idea right but he followed that and that led him to something greater we actually is creating more of an asset I was with a guide CBS and early on he was clearly like the only human being at CBS news who knew about social media right he really was he was like and it's just not that long ago that doctor shocked right exactly I'm outing myself and the organization sorry so I I pulled him aside and I'm like dude can you hook me up with like I'll pay you right he's like what do you pay me right I have made because you have this knowledge right valuable skill valuable knowledge that then demand people want to know right old farts like me need this come do it and so he's like I can't take money well I plied him with vodka so that was good or something yeah but then he started to take money was fine good for him meanwhile he's like he's like a secret weapon yeah Nate Marcin I use him like we're taking them out to dinner and I yeah some money on the side like help me do this and now and like I said now he's left CVS but he is more interested in sort of saying like maybe that should be my side well good for him and and good point as well like the big thing is what I'm trying to show people is to use the skills you already have right don't necessarily go out and don't learn to make an app I don't learn to code if that's not your thing everybody wants to make it out you know how to make it happen are you a developer nope do you know how to write code nope we don't do that let's start with the skills you have the whole program here is like idea to income in twenty seven days we'll get back with more of our interview with Chris gill.

"So I think that's why negotiation is really hard because you're being asked to do the one thing you've been trained your whole life not to do which is blow your own horn. Lemme ask you guys a question. Do you think it's appropriate to ask others at your level? What they get paid. That was what I was just going to say. And this is something that is luckily in the whole world of working, I think is changing it used to be that was absolutely promoting. You never talked about how much money you made. And now, I think people are realizing you have to start talking about how much money you. Make because you're at a disadvantage in negotiation. If you don't I think, it's absolutely okay. To ask you. I mean, obviously, you're not just like the random hallway. But somebody that you know, and trust and be like, hey, I know this is awkward, but I need this. And I think right now, I do feel like writers, especially in Hollywood or feeling a certain amount of kinship willingness to exchange that information, I would do that. Just getting the information that Rico singer transparency is good for all of us. So I know it's hard to ask someone like, hey, what are you making? Or what did you get paid to do that? But the more we can learn how to do that in every industry. The better off. We're going to be and I should say in my in what I said earlier, it's not clear that we it's a really really tough situation. We do support the changes that the WJ is asking for. So, you know, it's a big important thing. That's happening. But it's scary. Okay. Changing gears. We hear from people who wanted to change careers in their thirties. Forties, even fifties. What's your advice? Can you change careers is that realistic? Are there sort of things to do? Yeah. First of all, it makes it's very important to know what it is exactly that you wanna do very specifically what your goal is. And I also think that thinking about what you did in your previous career the thing that undergirds your interests, no matter what career you're in a, and especially the stuff that undergird your last career that could be ported into this new career, and hitting that constantly and interviews, and in you know, when you're searching for jobs, my answer to can you change careers is always. Yes, it's just a question of being realistic about how long that will take people who think that they can just quit their job and goes, this this thing that's been a hobby for a while if they really put fulltime into it that it would actually pay for their life. Well, I would be very careful about that improve that to yourself. I which means for a while you are working two jobs right at the time. You know, you've got this side hustle. You really wanna make the side hustle? Your number one thing you should prove to yourself that the side hustle. Really will be more lucrative with more time. Or there might be some other reason you're not making money at that in which case probably not to quit your job and go to that. It's rarely a good idea to quit her job until you've got by the way. It's pretty obvious. Right. Chris Gayle abo- talks about that on the podcast side-hustle school. Yes..

"And they know they can expect it from you but also leonardo became more successful at once he made some changes he wasn't afraid to apply some marketing strategy to his videos know he probably could have just said i'm an artist i don't care about marketing but instead he was openminded he paid attention to how other people title they're videos he knows that that how to format was very popular so he began using that and he began picking out the thumbnails that he wanted to be displayed rather than letting the youtube algorithm just do it automatically over time he also got smart about operations bringing in a contractor to help with the stuff that he didn't want to do and when you do those kind of things as an artist or a creative person of all kinds it's really going to allow you to do more of what are good at and spend your time in the way that you want to spend your time not just doing this stuff that you have to do because somebody has to do it so obviously this guy has a ton of talent you check out the videos all linked him up in the show notes because some of them really are amazing but i also there's a lot of talented people out there in the world who don't have an audience who haven't figured out how to monetize their skill and so success in this kind of format comes not only through talent but also through that persistent through that adaptation being willing to learn as you go and then being consistent week after week month after month and now for him year after year more than fifty million views so far let that be a lesson to you i feel inspired by the story myself but as i always say inspiration is good but inspiration with action that's the way to go so much better today show notes including links to leonardo's work in both english and spanish are excited sle school dot com slash three one to let me know what you think come say hi an instagram i'm one hundred ninety three countries one nine three countries thank you for listening today my name is chris gayle about for a side hustle school.

"And you had something that you wanted to add on to take it away by the is that the question that a a lot of people ask is what like why were you able to get through that and what what what what made you stay motivated and as i think part of it too was having a background where where i grew up i grew up in a town called fishkill new york which is i don't know chris gayle fish kill us kill is dutch for creek it's right around the tips the area vigour bm town and most of the town was employed by ibm and you know in the nineties going in one lost their jobs and it was very difficult for him for most of the town and i remember thinking even when i was a kid that you know i don't ever want to be in a position where you know i could work for someone for twenty years and then suddenly you there's nothing i can do and then you're at a point in your life where you no longer in the driver's seat and you and you get in this place where it like what is you know what are your options so i think part of the down to is knowing that i wanted to give myself a chance to never have to be in that position i love that because people think it's so crazy um people think that job security israel thrive and i know in some cases it is but or most the people that has a job that don't take the risks and started their business don't take the risks of being entrepreneur they are doing it at some level fear rejection fear failure fear of whatever the done inside they think that their choice they're making now is actually if the safer one crazy comfortable one we just had one of my friends peter it on the show literally yesterday and he said something that was just so perfect and trying to remember what it was specifically it was like um basically something online's alike safety is not real it was it was like oh being safe is risky yeah it was like why house like what i'm talking about that is.

"It doesn't mean you shouldn't continue to help your friends and family but if they're interested in your advice there might be other people interested to to maybe you should consider that age old side hustle question can i charged with this not speaking of money and a lot of people wonder about the logistics of having a second income or money that's arriving apart from their paycheck and i'll do a whole extended episode at some point a delve into the issues of business licences taxes etcetera there also been some listener questions and the archives you wanna go back and listen just a quick recommendation if you do nothing else especially at first it is very wise to separate your business income from your personal income your side hustle income essentially is business income so it can be very helpful to open a business checking account which is either free at your bank or low cost if for some reason it looks like it's going to cost a lot of money or be difficult you probably two different bank because it shouldn't be that hard and then it's just fun to be able to log in and see like this is my dedicated accounts the only money that's coming into this account comes from the side hustle if i have expenses than those expenses were coming from that account to subjugate much better record throughout the year so it's good for recordkeeping and it's also good for motivation speaking of motivation as always inspiration is good but inspiration combined with action is so much better today show notes are already up at the site that is side us school dot com slash one seven one by the way what do you call a fake knuettel an impostor and here's one mortaring pressure friends what is the dress code at a pasta convention dress code is tie thanks so much folks i'll be here all week everyday actually i'm chris gayle about this aside as his.

"In the bible if you are uh saved committed chris gayle person the here's the holy spirit at a later real true christian is it possible two hello a team of all right well that's a good question um first of all noman conserve to masters but that doesn't mean a person can't experience a battle in their heart between two masters there can be a battle in a person's heart between the light and darkness peter the apostle was a follower of jesus but satan was trying to get peter in jesus even said but one time jesus turns to peer get behind me say his peter was trying to encourage jesus not to go to the cross he said get behind me say you don't desire the things of god and then jesus told peter satan his desire to have you that he might safety likely but i prayed for you that your faith does not fail and when you're converted strengthen the breath of peter went through a real struggle the night he denied christ and so a believer can feel that battle inside but a person cannot be spirit field and devil filled at the same time is that makes sense if we have not ruled to the up so you know all of us feel the battle between light darkness in our hearts and that doesn't mean you're not a christian even jesus was tempted right so being tempted is not a sin christ was tempted it's when you surrendered attempt that it turns into sen in terms you don't have a book be happy to send you a free copy the talks about the twelve tips to resist the temptation you can just ask for the book on tips for resisting temptation will send you a free copy to any and is eight hundred eight three five six seven four seven to get your free copy that book by the way that does open up another line if someone wants to call with a bible question it's eight hundred god god says eight hundred four six three seven.
