"$270 million. Chris Fox for CBS News, Austin. It's Saturday, August 6th, we've made it to the weekend, everybody. Welcome to WTO P and one 38. Wrapping in weather on the Yates over to E and Crawford in the WTO P traffic center. Okay, whatever we had on the Maryland beltway should be at least out of the roadway of not completely gone for the right shoulder of some police activity along with the crash after branch avenue heading toward saint Barnabas road on the inner loop. Everything else on the interloop and outer loop in Maryland is actually pretty good, 95 BW Parkway quiet 50 across the bay bridge. Two lanes each direction to and from the shore and extra caution for high profile vehicles as the winds are still a little wreck of sea. So we still have wind warnings in effect on the bay bridge, but no vehicle restrictions as a result, two 70 between Frederick and the lane divide remains quiet, pleased by all means, keep it that way. District travel still shall we say problematic in northeast D.C. on outbound New York avenue. It's a little better than it was, but still was slowing, both directions, mainly near the arboretum, after between, let's say, between let me try that again in English this time between bladensburg road and South Dakota avenues where the work zone is and it's a single right lane in each direction to get mine. In Virginia, cleaning at the last of the crash on frying pan road near route 28 east matters getting by to the right west batters to the left, but without delay. On the capitol beltway in Virginia, the interloop work after Arlington of our two left lanes getting by and then after the dulles toll road dad was single right lane as you go beneath Georgetown pipe to get through the bridge deconstruction, 66 works on still there is still very manageable and no delays getting through the work. "The secret to writing every day by Chris. Fox Chris. Fox is the author of over twenty SCI FI and fantasy novels as well as a very successful line of writing books Under the right faster rate smarter series title. They primarily aimed at indy authors and focus on both writing habit and mindset as well as the craft and business of writing depending on which book you're looking at in the series today we'll be sharing three things and to hack and a quote that pulled from the second book in the series which is lifelong writing habit for most of the period in which. Chris wrote his five series totalling almost thirty books so twenty novels. Eight writing books he also Was working fulltime recently. He's reached a point with his writing to be able to quit and right fulltime and for more on that journey check out his youtube series. There's links on all these things in the showdowns This book is short just over one hundred pages and includes exercises for every chapter to help you apply the practices to your own habits. It's primarily a book about Mindset and productivity obviously so chapter titles around topics like what is a habit getting organized goal setting And the power of your peers and as usual there are lots and lots and lots of things that I won't be able to cover since I'm only touching on three things hack and quote so let's get started. The first of the three things mornings are everything. So He's another morning person who can't say enough about the life changing properties of getting up early. He is a wildly different person than he was when he started adopting this one habit and tackling one project at a time during that extra time deciding that he was tired of being quote the epitome of the stone slacker. Guy A guy in his thirties who had exactly nothing. He could point to as an accomplishment. He started getting up forty five minutes earlier to go to the gym. He liked the effect that had on his life so much that he started getting up earlier and earlier to give himself another hour and some change beyond that so in the extra two ish hours he gave each day. He wrote most of his books before heading out the door to go to work for the day. Now let's be clear about something for the vast majority of the decade that he's been doing this he was a single guy With no spouse factor in and no kids to get ready for school that may or may not apply to you He also made peace with the fact that he needed to adjust as bedtime to allow for this habit to flourish. He calls it a day around. Nine o'clock most days it sounds like and He expands a bit about why he believes that the mornings are so effective and it comes back to brain function. So it's Today's quote here. We go this saying early to bed. Early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise the saying exists for a reason and it turns out that neuroscience backs it up during the night your body's healing muscles rebuilding damage is repaired for your brain. Something interesting happens. Most conscious thought happens in your prefrontal. Cortex the area right behind your forehead during the day it swells and as it happens you develop something called prefrontal dysfunction. Anything created becomes more difficult. If you get a good night's sleep. This process is reversed. The swelling goes back down and the neurological pathways are repaired. You wake up fresh with a full bar of willpower so to speak. This is the absolute perfect time to write. I begin the day but working out on my body that I work on my mind by writing after that expand it. Further by listening to podcasts. Audiobooks IN INTERVIEWS. By the time they arrive at the office around. Eight fifteen. Am I've done more than most people will will do all day get to walk around knowing that my big goals were accomplished and it feels amazing. And that's Chris Fox from the chapter on mornings number to get to know the anatomy of a habit whether bad habits are trying to jettison or good habits. You're trying to build into your day's just knowing. The three parts of habit are key so the trigger is the thing. Let your brain know that you're about to do something or that makes your brain want to do something. Through teen. Is the habit itself again? Good or bed. And the third part is the reward. It's how you're benefiting or quote unquote benefiting lots of times. You don't have to replace all three pieces of the habit to get vastly different results. So he uses his morning. Routine is an example in the past. He'd always slept until seven when the alarm woke him up. And then he get ready and he'd swing by starbucks on his way to work the trigger. Which was the alarm was fine. As was the reward arriving caffeinated and ready for the workday but his routine itself was expanding his waistline and it wasn't giving him the time and energy. He needed to write his books so he flipped that routine by waking up earlier. Working out and eventually you know building in enough time to do writing as well. And then he only made small tweaks to the trigger. Which was the alarm clock by setting it? You know a little earlier and small tweaks to the reward so he still stop by starbucks every day but he switched to a smaller coffee still decked out with the cream and sugar and a smaller pastry but this small tweak effectively cut his calories in half so he's kind of actually piling on a second habit flip. But that's Okay. He urges you to make a list of all your habits throughout the day remember to include the ones that are helping to you to achieve your goals and the ones that aren't and once you've done that take a look at them and pick one to flip break it into parts look and see if the trigger the routine the reward. What needs to be done to those things to make them to make it easier. Free to switch we like continuity. We liked to do things the same way. Put that fact to work for you. So for instance. I recently flipped a habit but the trigger and the reward were very similar as was to a great extent the routine so in the past. I always put on political shows while I was making my breakfast so the trigger was the same when everybody laugh tonight made my breakfast. I would put my political shows while making an eating. My breakfast and reward was I was kept company and entertain while I was making my breakfast eating my breakfast and cleaning up the kitchen but I wanted to get more time to finish the writing courses that I wanted to take to keep up with some podcasts that I wanted to keep up with things like that and also to just start watching more shows in my genre that I write in because those are stories too and that helped build the wall so I kept the trigger the same when everybody leaves and I start to make my breakfast. I put on my phone just like I always did. But the content has changed the actual routine switched. I don't watch political shows in the morning anymore. They just give me end up anyway. And instead I replaced it with things. Like Joyce Carol oates or Neil gaiman or David Bellotti or podcasts. Or the various places that you can watch Stephen King's Books and universes come to come to life on. Hbo and Hulu and everywhere else. So that little tweak has been a big game changer. Because I've actually gotten through more of my classes filled my well stress myself out and yet the bulk of the routine itself didn't change very much. I still do much the same thing. It's just what I put on my phone during that you know anything from fifteen minutes to an hour depending on the day radically changed and it made and it's been making differences so look at your habits look at the parts that are working and and bring you pleasure and that help you get someplace and then look and see if you can use those to build in something else you want in your life okay. That's number two number three help. I need somebody so a habit takes about three weeks to get kind of locked into your schedule and I would argue probably longer than that. But anyway those weeks will often suck and it will be so easy to slide back into your old routines. Those groups are just waiting for you to come on back and just glide right into him but remember even the most Reverted among us are still social animals and we are affected by the people..
