Interview with Chris Ford

"Welcome to hallway Jets. I'm Liam Dempsey. I'm Cara Clay's today. We're joined by Chris Ford Chris spent the first twenty years of her career working as an agency and freelance designer five years ago. She took a hard left and to project management team is a hybrid project manager and designer at reactive a WordPress VIP partner. Hi Chris. I'm so glad to hear welcome. Thanks for having me. I'm really glad to be here. Mm. I have missed interactions with the WordPress Community. I think tank fair to say that we all have Chris Chris. What a pleasure to meet you. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself off? My name's Chris Borg. I started working on the web in Nineteen Ninety Six when I graduated from design school. I was supposed to be a T-shirt designer at a skateboard company and then their web guy quit and suddenly I was the new one person on staff fortunately. There were like five tags so there wasn't a whole lot to learn at the moment. We were very excited when animated gifs and background images came out for a little bit of context. I did that with the agencies in every industry from like skateboarding described booking at agencies and as a freelance writer and then five years ago, like I said, I took a really hard left into project management because I was interested in more kind of the business end of things. Like, how do you run a profitable project? How he managed timelines, how do you manage budgets which is something I always struggled with as a freelancer. And now I have just recently within the last couple of months started dipping my toe back into the design Pond relearning everything because it's been five years, which means nothing is the same Everything Has Changed. I started in WordPress. I don't even know how long it go but it was before Studio press was Studio project. I had been working as a professional scrapbooker which he says an actual job and the industry. It's the craft industry is like the tech industry. There are bubbles in different crafts and then those bubbles burst. And so when the scrapbooking Bubble Burst, I knew a bunch of people with photography. Skills he needed websites. So I got me a copy of the Kubrick theme and added flash headers with navigation to him and stole my WordPress Journey. Wow. I am so many things I want to ask you about I do too. I totally do. Can we start on scrapbooking, please, please please. Yes, I did a little scrap booking not professionally and now, you know with digital photos, whoever I mean what may have do people still do it? I mean I assume people still do but it seems like a a something that Is not a thing anymore because nobody prints out there photos. I actually I got into it because I started as a print designer and I'd love to paper and I am working it is miserable job where every day I wouldn't go in and recreate Rain Bird sprinkler timers and Flash like my whole job was to show you how like the dial spins phone numbers flashed and then you push this button and it was miserable and horrible and there was a scrap booking store down the street. So I would go and buy papers and things change and usually I just hoard crafting supplies cuz they're pretty but I actually used fees and digital scrapbooking was just taking off and that's kind of how I got notified because I do a lot of like retouching and like Photoshop was my thing. And so I got to know enough people who knew that about me that Wednesday, Digital scrapbooking started getting more popular. I got more people calling me saying hey leading someone to write an article. I was the art director for digital scrapbooking magazine and wait a second cuz I think scrapbooking and I think paper. So what is digital scrapbooking? It was basically you would go in and it off when skeuomorphic design was really big so I could like make things look realistic. So you would go in and you know make something that looked like a rib shack and put it on a page or design your own pattern backgrounds that look like paper I would do a lot where I would design my own stuff and then print it out on a printer and make kind of hybrid page. Just whip it so the Andrews to still pay and yeah. Oh, that's a really yeah. Well, no wonder you did it professionally that sounds amazing for a print em out and log. Yeah, it was super fun. Like I had a Michaels in my closet people would just send me stuff because you would get published in magazines. Like it was a really really good fun mystery years until the money ran out where I basically just kind of got paid to paint things and I don't know if anyone knows who clotting home but she's this really amazing collage artist who does like acrylic image transfers and packing tape transfers and it was you basically got page to make crafts which was kind of the coolest thing in the world, but I had a you know, I had bills to pay so I couldn't like walk it was a really competitive thing. Right and a lot of the people who were involved in it. It was their second job their husband was working. They weren't really in it for the money and I'm like dude. This is my full-time job. Like I need to get paid and I need to get paid on

"Of Congress your new start could expire and spark a new arms race and to discuss new start as well as other issues I'm joined by Chris Ford Assistant Secretary of international security and nonproliferation at the state department cause for welcome to use our thanks very much pleasure to be here thanks for having me every ministration since John F. Kennedy has achieved progress in arms control except for the trump administration which has taken us out of the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty dismantle the Iran nuclear deal hasn't closed the deal with North Korea and is dragging its feet according to its critics on you start doesn't drop in estrogen have something against arms control we are in the process of standing up for the integrity of the arms control process we felt it necessary to withdraw from the I. N. F. treaty because Russia flagrantly violated it for years resisting all of our diplomatic entreaties to come back into compliance and so we felt it was essential not only for our national security most importantly but also for the integrity of the arms control process that's not anti arms control that's being the faithful friend of arms control the server and you start you start as the only remaining limit on offensive nuclear weapons that we have with Russia what are you waiting to extend or what we're trying to do is evaluate the new star question in the broader context of how to get to the future of the future vision that president trump has outlined for this administration of a trilateral arms control agreement that includes both Russia and China but also brings in Russia's non strategic weapons where they have a significant American advantage over over us at this time and are on track to build up their arsenal even further and brings the whole range of China's systems even by the Chinese to have a strategic dialogue with you and you said that you're waiting for that response but the Chinese have at least said this on February twelfth the foreign ministry spokesman says China has no intention of joining the so called trilateral arms control negotiations with the US and Russia so don't we already have China's answer well what we do not have China's answer to as an invitation to sit down with us analogous to what we do with the Russians to talk about the strategic security issues if China is indeed the kind of responsible our that it proclaims itself to be that there is no alternative but to sit down and take that kind of responsibility seriously and the strategic nuclear around as well the Chinese have somewhere you know around three hundred four hundred plus nuclear weapons or so the Russians and Americans of course have many times that the Chinese say that the U. S. rushes to reduce their numbers before they're willing to have this conversation is the US will introduce numbers before that conversation we had with the trains president trump has mentioned the possibility of some kind of a cap it is clearly essential to think in terms of arms and arms limitation before one can think in terms of arms reduction would stop the bleeding before one can worry about how to have the the right exercise regimen for perfect health and we think it's essential that trying to live up to its obligations to pursue negotiations in good faith toward supporting nuclear arms race are you opening the door for Russia to raise some of the issues and is there any risk by waiting until you get this response from the Chinese that president Vladimir Putin maybe later this year won't be interested in extending you stars that risk but we're already talking with the Russians and our strategic security dialogue as I mentioned we thought not about extending you start right all we are talking about what the future of our central should look like and that is a much broader picture than just the question of neustar neustar extension is a piece of the puzzle but is a much bigger puzzle that one needs also to be thinking about what we are concerned about is how to deal with the broader challenges that are not covered or comparable by new start at all but you know I've talked to a lot of arms control experts posted Republican Democrat and they specifically say look you start is helpful right provides transparency into the Russian system that we wouldn't otherwise have you're talking about a larger version of arms control hopefully trilateral are you risking the benefits of new start in order to accomplish some of the goals that you're talking about well the decision to start hasn't yet been met we are not arguing that there are no benefits to new start there clearly are we certify those to Congress in a bunch of concur reports each year the question is however in what way do we pass to get to the president's vision of trilateral arms control that answers more of these questions with more parties than before and if extending new start is a good way either for five years or fractionally per house which is also available if extending new start is a good way to get to that vision than we are in favor of it if it's not then we need to find that other way last year China you've been speaking a lot lately about what the U. S. calls predatory Chinese practices and especially highlighting the Chinese military was cold fusion with the private sector what does that concern you have and how is that different from the relationship that the Pentagon has with private industry yes what's called the what they call military civil fusion in China is a strategy for systematically breaking down all barriers between the civilian industrial sector in effect and the military sector so that there is essentially a fused and unitary industrial base that is able to be called upon by the powers that be to support both economic competitiveness and strategic goals in that realm and China's development of military power in support of that they have a range of coercive tools and and structures in place that no one else for the rest of the world frankly does we certainly don't I read a recent speech you gave on this and you talked about how the US needed to re learn how to fight major power competition have our great power competition muscles atrophy I would say that they have atrophied to a degree I think at the end of the Cold War we probably had a tendency to assume someone complacency complacently that those kinds of ugly and awkward great power competitive things were sort of in the rear view mirror and we don't have to worry so much about them unfortunately Russia and China didn't draw the same lesson from that period and they doubled down on their own competitive strategies and we are not trying to make up for some some ground that I wish we had not lost Chris Ford Assistant Secretary of international security and nonproliferation thank you very much thanks for having me now.

"Also, you got these older guys, and I'm going to have a really young locker room and an old locker room. Are those veterans going to include the younger players with the younger players seek out the older players and say, help me get better than. That sort of the dynamic that I'm curious about with the Lakers. Yeah, in a lot is going to contend on those older players in how they ingratiate themselves to to this new mix because even LeBron has to reinvent himself, what kind of player do you think he'll be? It is difficult to say because you know how he's been for us. What we've seen over years past when I played with them, he has a lot around him that could do different things. So he didn't always have to carry weight. Cleveland is a little different. He needed more shooters around him, so he doesn't have that many shooters around him. So how are they gonna fit in and you know, Stevenson Rhonda both need the ball now hands. So is he going to give up more that responsibility? And is he gonna become somewhat of a spot up shooter Dessaint time or those guys can become spot up shooters gonna be interested in what would you ever consider him the best player of all time? Like what? What could does LeBron have to do something or can he do something where you. Would go now I would look at him as the best player. No, I think he, he certainly, you know, just off the cuff, he's certainly a top five all times, but planning against him an m j I think it for me, it's m j all day long only because how I played in his him and you know, m j just had everything you know, from mid range at three point to post up game and he could score and dominate in east position. I'll LeBron is dominant the Bronco do so many things on the floor. And do you think lebrons a better all around player than Jordan? The as hard that's hard to say. Because you know LeBron is probably one of the best passers you know, the league seeing MJ is probably this probably the weakest part of his game. You know, he didn't. He didn't pass a lot, but at the same time, you know, m j didn't have any other weaknesses in his game and defensively he. He was a two way player defensively. He was incredible. And just as dominant. Why I still look at LeBron better rebound or better. Passer, Mike was not shooting the three back then he would have developed into because shoot, yeah, but LeBron has turned into at least a dangerous three point shooter like you have to. You have to account for him when he takes those shots. But the personality though is I think the the biggest difference because Mike wanted to kill you, was he mean to, you know, he wasn't. He actually killed me slowly and. Yeah, he he would comment to the coach. He's actually doing a great job out here. And meanwhile, he's born in forty, five, wait, he's talking to your coaches. Yeah, I remember Chris Ford, he, he's yelled at me, Chris Ford's yelling the whole time, rookie get in front of them and I'm fronting onto post and j just kind of slowly kind of glide across the floor. And he gets the ball and shakes and scores, and I did everything the game plan said, and then there's a breaking accident were sitting there and you know, Chris, Florida's is down there. Just hammer me and he he's doing a great job. Great job. Meanwhile, got forty five on the books. So I'll let you did you think that Mike didn't want you taking out because he had forty five in the books like he wanted you to guard? No, honestly believe that he, he didn't think that anybody could stop him. He can score whenever he wanted to score wherever you the scores, though it didn't matter what I did l..

These media portrayals make it look like either we're all medal of honor recipients were all suffering from PTSD in wine stable well the reality is bell. Curve. Guttering are. Struggle with some barriers as a result of their military experiences where service dies can help. Them in other? Treatments. Can. Help them but I think it's just a? Little unfair to cast everybody is either broken, or a hero we certainly have people who suffer and those who have done amazing things, all on all give veterans a? Chance, to individuals in need. Them where they're at because they're all at different Phases of their life and we hope by this particular project, we're doing American humane and. We can move more people. "Brought up a little bit in five minutes a regular season play it it it certainly uh left boston search shape or something but hey give them credit they found a way to get back back aid but i do wonder boy report what uh what the longterm implications will be a big thirdquarter coming out of that coming at a halftime there the celtics made the changes you mentioned over the summer after earning the 1 seed last season beal they still retooled how does this change those expectations and even the potential now yeah you know it's funny because they were even this notion in boston that it because there's so many new faces because there's so many young guys on the roster that maybe they hit they would he stepped back but i thank you once you saw the way kyrghiz and gordon an al horford played in the preseason the expectation third the bubble again you think well you know make maybe eastern conference final to get into it and and if the couch kill a little bit of their age maybe get a chance to push them i think if you're boston the the the sort of the take away now is all right you know let let's figure out how law gordon hayward is going to be sidelined is there any kanter i if the serbs you'll get in there can pick this thing up is there any chance he gets back later in the season uh uh but outside of that you start looking at the younger guys at and especially tonight jaylen brown jason tatum the number three picks in the last two draft really sort of picked up their game i mean jason tatum making his first nba game he's out there starting guard him abroad at times and uh you know there's a lot of encouraging things to take from what you saw for now you know maybe if you're boston e if you'll have lost the aspiration that they could heal thank you have the potential to hang in the east but maybe this year is a is a chance to develop those younger guys had make the strides so that when he do have a healthy gordon hayward back uh maybe you're even more competitive with the cavs at that point given that situation chris port chris ford's burglary is being celtics reporter joining me here on sports that are all night you mentioned cairo serving.
