It's fine if the situation calls for you don't always need home run, especially last night. Especially you needed to get on base. He didn't need a hit. I know it was one run game, but you're trying to kill the ball and all of a sudden works maybe just trying to get a like after two strikes just trying to get the bat hitting the ball and get a base hit and keep the momentum going. Yeah. I mean, you cannot strike out that often in big moments. I mean, he struck out two hundred eleven times this year. Like there used to be a time where if you struck out one hundred times in the season, that was like a laugh, you're the laughing stock of the team, or, you know, forgotten about like his strike are almost forgiven because he hit so many home runs and all that stuff like Chris Davis has just as any strikeouts as he does. But Christie was no other like hits or anything like that. He's one of the worst seasons in major league history, and then you're looking at STAN, who has that many strikeouts as well. But he has those home runs to like make people for like almost like not seeing and like the have a big mirror in the way or a fog of his poor, bats, all those didn't happen. You know, he, I mean, he, I don't know. I think he had a decent year, but his numbers are definitely down for the regular season. This year he struck out. It's just so many times again in the playoffs. But if you look at it, I mean the guy shook up two hundred eleven. Times this year, his previous high was one hundred seventy. So that's like he added forty one strikeouts. He added about forty eight strikeouts from last season. It was a bad season, no doubt about it. He had twenty one less homers and thirty two surveys. He had fifteen less walks. The well. If you remember his pretty much down in every category was the reigning MVP. Yes, because two thousand seventeen, but he was, I don't even think has season this year as close to that. No, no, of course not. Which is like you don't expect a guy to win MVP every year like you don't. You know, you have a caliber player and then you're, he can win it. He's in the running. He's in the mix. He's in the conversation, but this year he wasn't even close and his numbers were drastically different. That's why people think like these contract he had with the with the Marlins that the gig he's picked up was too much for the guy. And honestly, I think they're right. Out it because really we say it every time we get the list. Even recently we've got a list of NHL player props. We really should just go under because I didn't look at it individually this time, but I would still say probably sixty five seventy percent of the major league baseball. Props went under. If you look at it under under under it's amazing. But like you were saying, like the pool halls beltway. They look so easy, but there were other players to that. They had home runs in the twenty five range that those guys finished with like twelve or they really even played every year. We gotta just we next year. I've really might just take every bit and just betted under. Let's do that. Let's do. I think it was forty three and a half for the Yankees and judge was thirty nine and a half. The judge was injured. They both went under the home runs are just in general. I think all go on there. I think the the the there was will someone I bet this we'll someone hit fifty home runs. I said, no, I had its went out Chris Davis at the end there the good, Chris Davis with the k. not the not the Orioles one, but they. He had forty eight going forty, seven hundred to the weekend and hit one over like Saturday night or something. But yeah, all these homerun battles probably under. Yeah. Speaking of that, did he just statistics just hit one? Oh, I know it doesn't mean much, but what are the chances? This guy Davis. It's two forty, seven for four years. That was the best that's like guy with over five hundred bats. That's like a statistic. How does that happen? It's almost impossible. I showed Todd firm and the geek of all geeks on lock it in that stat and he's still going crazy about it. He couldn't believe it and. They took them out right in the middle of the game just to, I don't know, but they they, he was at two, four to seven. I don't think he got his last plate appearance Sunday, but that that was fun. Yeah, yeah, he'd better not it to forty eight now, that'd be bad. Just keep going your career softball batting average to forty seven. So such a coincidence really is, I know that's true. All right. It wasn't anywhere near where his, yeah, but that doesn't mean that you give up on them or you think it can't happen. This is a guy who has gotten older as discovered, more things as obviously learned a lot about himself. Obviously, from that interview, the thing I like the most was kinda high standard for himself. Yeah, I mean, I've been waiting to fat most of the last thirty years, but that was a time when I could do it push ups..

"But there are other stories in baseball right now, some of them pretty big and some of them pretty exciting. And it's tough to podcast about baseball right now because things are changing so dramatically every day that the last time we talked, it seemed like things were sorta sealed up. There were still racist, but looked like there were clear favorites. And then since the last time we talked things have tightened considerably to the point that people are talking about plausible for way ties and. Five-way ties. And by the time people here this episode, some of those scenarios will may be more plausible or others will be a lot less possible. So things are changing very much by the day here, but we are really going down to the wire in than west and central desert exciting races, and we're going to have meaningful baseball in the last weekend of the season. Look, you can talk about the pen races in the Plasco you want the Baltimore Orioles. Chris Davis of over his last ten games has gone one for thirty seven with twenty strikeouts Chris Davis. I thought there was a little point in the middle of the year where he was sort of coming out of it a little like he wasn't a wasn't a good. I think that's we're good. He has his his, his highest WC plus in a month. This year is eight, just bad, but I'm not at least in July and August. He was. He could be like the sort of the pools kind of play right, where you know he's a problem, but he's not just like, so out night dreadful that like you're the or is it you just kind of look back in. Members w plus his negative thirteen, Chris Davis as a season w. r. sue plus of forty five as a first baseman. He has a fan groups war of negative three point two, which ties him for the worst of all time with nineteen eighty-five George Wright WSB twenty eight. And I believe we've discussed before at least according to the worst single season war of all time for position players, nineteen, thirty, three, Jim Levy of the Browns net negative for Chris Davis, probably can't get there in a week, but given what he's done for the last ten games maybe he actually could. Yeah, there's so much at stake in this last week for stories that we have followed the all season long. The other Chris Davis write his run at a fourth consecutive season of bedding. Exactly to forty seven. That is also coming up to the wire. He is vetted to forty nine as we speak going into Wednesday's action. So that is still very much in play that he could extend that already unpreced. Streak. And of course, as we speak, Jacob degrom is going on right now. He is pitching against the Braves, and this will decide whether he ends the season with a higher war or a higher old school Winstone. So we are about to get some resolution there. It seems like is this is this is I think it probably will be right. I guess he could get into another game, but I dunno if he'd have another regularly scheduled start after this. I think this might be it and along those same lines, the Clayton Kershaw streak that we have discussed that I've written about that one. Unfortunately, it looks like has been snapped, Clayton Kershaw streak of lowering his career, your a with each successive season in the majors. He has remarkably managed to do that you're after year every year in his career up to this point. Even though in his rookie year, he had a four point two, six Yara which was not bad to begin with. And then he was just amazing for your after your after year, but still. Manage to do it this year. He is not going to do it. He theoretically had a chance to do it even heading into his most recent start, but he entered the season with a two point three, six career era. And right now has a two point five, three for the season which has raised his career era to two point three, eight, although I will salute him for making it that close because I did not think it would end up that close given how he was pitching at the start of the season. Yeah. So I guess we need new streaks, Chris Davis streak is interesting, but the likelihood is that that one's going to end, but just the fact that he's so close, I don't know what a weird thing become interested in..

"With a one ninety. Eight batting average. So Chris Davis is not alone in this club, although he is by far the worst member of this club in that Adam Dunn in two thousand twelve was actually a pretty good hitter. And Mark Reynolds in two thousand ten was not a terrible hitter. And Chris Davis is a truly terrible hitter this year. So there's that our current update, Chris Davis right now Gordon fan graphs is at negative two point, seven wins replacement negative two point seven. That is of course quite terrible. Now I don't know how this happened, but there is a in nineteen seventy eight. There's a player named Pat Rockett rocket. I don't know this to tease house Bernice pet rocket. Batted only one hundred fifty seven times. But he had w suppressive negative eleven and he had a war of negative two point seven himself. But in like a third. The plane time is Chris Davis already has. So Pat Rockett low key worst season ever slash imaginable. That's really quite dreadful. But anyway, the actual the worst were for position player on record belongs to nineteen thirty three, Jim Levy played for the Browns. He played nine hundred forty one game. She had a war of negative four, then terms of contemporary baseball, I guess nineteen seventy seven. Jerry Royster future manager were of negative three point eight and nine hundred five George, right for the Rangers were of negative three point two, but Chris Davis is now sneaking up on twenty seven at done. That's who preceded twenty twelve Dunn, who you just discussed. Chris Davis, stinking up on twenty seven Adam Dunn and two thousand two nephew. Peres finished with wars of negative two point nine and nineteen ninety seven. I was again negative three point one. So Chris Davis is playing for something. Playing to avoid something. Well, I don't know. He's catching up. All right. Do you have a step list? I do. Okay. Yeah. It's also a little ballpark..

"Like if it's just a slump for a while and it's bad, but it's not historic or anything. You might just write about the slump and say the sky's been slumping and that's fine. But at a certain point, it reaches a level where you start to almost be more interested in like how the guy feels thin, how he plays like, how are you holding up? Is this a psychological thing you kind of want to get in his head and you know, help him or figure out what sort of angst this is causing. So at a certain point, you wouldn't just do like a, you know, hero the stats about how bad this guy is because that would seem kind of. Mean-spirited kicking him when he's down. So you would want to, you know, approach it with more compassion and nuance and hopefully access. Yeah, I will point out that when Chris Davis, the Orioles, Chris Davis was benched for a week and a half on June eleventh. His opium at that time was four fifty four. That's very bad since then it's seven. Oh five. He's making progress still not good. Still not what you're looking for. But that's an improvement for just the month of July. His opium is six ninety five which is basically the same, not he's he's not having rousing success, but he's at least starting to look like a major league baseball player again. So good for Chris Davis and the other version of this coal Calhoun. Right? He had, yes, stewing greatly. He had a terrible for two months of the season. He disappeared. He was hurt and on may thirty first Kole Calhoun had an opium of three seventy four. Yes. He had a three w. r. WRC plus three. Yeah. And over the past month and a half because PS is one point. Oh one eight. He's been what if the sater's baseball? What sport? This is. All right. Bill says, can you explain why defenses sometimes make changes to the shift or their defensive positioning with two strikes in particular, why a third baseman who is initially playing shortstop would play, we'll swap positions in the shift with the shortstop who is initially playing roughly where the second baseman would play. Okay. So hold on. Let me walk through this again. Third baseman is covering the bunt before there are new strikes because third basement is most familiar with covering the bunt than you assume the is taken away when there are two strikes. Not always true, but mostly it's true unless it's like Brandon belt or whoever. The other person I wrote about his who two straight line. So then at that point you you are ready are moving the person away from covering the for the bunt. So you have this over shift. Third baseman goes away. So then then the shortstop I think is just kind of covering his normal position is normal ground. So that would be my mission. Yeah. And I think part of it is just that the direction that betters ten hit the ball may change. Change with two strikes because guys approach changes, or you know, some do at least so teams may have count specific spray, charts, said positioning instructions. So you know, stand here for this guy or don't stand here for the sky when he has two strikes on. So sometimes he will see the move around and I know it was suggested, I think by dente cts maybe recently that one reason why looked like shifts were plateauing or even decreasing last season. I think they've increased since, but we thought that maybe we had reached peak shift and I think one reason it was proposed that it only looked like that because the stats were showing shifts on balls in play, basically like on the outcome of the at bat. And by that time, teams may have stopped shifting. So they may have shifted earlier in the plate appearance but then stopped shifted or stop shifting or shifted differently. Waiter in the plate appearance. That may have been skewing things though. I guess now that we have stat casts in theory that should account for that kind of thing. And you should be able to see when a team is shifting or not whenever you want to look at at the count. That sounds about right. I was always troubled by having data that only was on balls and by by the way, this is a throwaway number, but because I was curious, I want to look up battered with the most strikeouts after getting ahead three this season knick Mercatus he leads the league.

"Are you taking in that game of the those two you gotta pick one of the i guess it's right because the oils are just so terrible and chris the i don't know if people notice but chris davis having arguably the worst season in majorly history of you've seen this in history or some the adam dunn year yeah i know it's bad but that's sad it's i don't think you realize what chris davis is doing power that year chris davis has only four home runs in over two hundred bats not walking he's betting one fifty three not getting singles he's out these like he's keith hernandez at first base i mean this is he slugging to thirty three don did not really for power that you're either a one eighteen ice oh what's chris davis is the year loss this is i mean oh is eight i love when dancing boris key tweets like chris davis having arguably the worst season in major league history i don't know why would goes stephen right are you buying look half the pitchers in baseball went onto the l this weekend stephen right somebody you would consider picking your fantasy team yes no as in today i'll play him and he's probably going right back to the free agent list after that i mean look the problem i have with this guy i mean i have problems with this guy but i mean on the field he ease walking people okay and that's that's part of the issue here i don't think he's terribly durable either so the knee injuries last year i just don't think this is lasting but as a streamer for today against your sure absolutely and in a in a day are notoriously streaky right and this is an offense that's not very good in the first place as you had pointed out and it's a light schedule and the alternatives here there just isn't a lot out there that you can get off the free agent since the bundy outing when he didn't get anybody out and you're like that's dumping quality sorts and four out of five that's why i'm asking head to head these two.

"We shoot some videos what was the start time saturday seven o'clock adm no no i'm talking about the game shooting the video yeah it was six pm right i guess six six o'clock start feeling pretty good about myself again chris davis pretty pretty good baseball player but you say so myself the brewers are probably kicking themselves for for the package that they got for him i don't even know how many guys are still in baseball that they got for chris davis yeah that's that's that's forty a year but that's forty a year the defense whatever he's going to be a d h we all know that he's very forty that was the other thing too when i was at the call siham we were we were sitting behind home plate but i was sitting all the way to the left which is right along the walkway that the players go from the dugout to the clubhouse so get a really good look at these dudes chris davis is not all that tall but he is i'm he's a stocky oh yeah yeah yeah he's he's pretty he's got buckled cinderblocks under there but he's he's a stocky fucker man he's a strong motherfucker i mean if he stood behind me you be able to see him but i kee still he's still pretty stocky he's he's a fucking ball of muscle this is a dude who just routinely hits balls otto like out of out of the coliseum nbp upper tanks upo like what that's do that here's a nugget for you the primary prospect that the brewers received in the chris davis deal made his debut on april sixteenth oh jacob nodding google plus he doing he's over five of the run scored far walks yeah go to all very molson.

"Clearly as we don't see a lot of like loud crazy and i would say hundred pence is probably the one guy who's gonna stand out and be the super rah everyone else just goes about their business doesn't do a whole lot adding andrew an evan to that mix along with the talent but also to see how they worked at the clubhouse and just kind of all these players i it fits an it makes sense and i'm excited first of all a little bit of an upgrade defensively but also with the best they're to bring and hopefully what they need in a lot more power you were in the angels camp what was your takeaway you know it's funny i walked in there not try to be all crazy about otani and i don't mean that in a bad way but just because of all the attention that shohei has gotten and you felt the media like the moment i was there there's so much media in and around following him you know so i talked to mike trout and talking to you know chris davis love the the players that that you know i've known and and just kind of feeling at all then otani gets in the batting cage buster i'm standing there you know me i'm super nerd when it comes to hitting so i'm just standing there right behind the cage and the way it comes off as that and i'm not saying he's going to be anything crazy like oh my gosh she's going to be the best hitter in baseball but a lot of japanese players and i played in japan for some time you know it's a different swing it's a different style to different approach he adds another level with the power element that you don't commonly see from a lot of japanese players you know becky matsui would be another one that obviously had the power but for the most part there's approach that it's usually very much like you know getting the contact staying through opposite field he has this ability to to very smoothly and calmly have a ton of power and it'll be interesting he has a longer swing so i'll be interested i know a lot of pitchers hacking eric and ski their hitting coach have really tried to jam him inside.

"Obviously it would be inappropriate to start with anybody other than i am sorry dallas brayden yes dow yeah all right we got we had a couple of bright spots and they've been talked about last year a lot uh the the young boys on the corners mandelson not chapman these are guys that are extremely intrigue between choppy only and crush davis between those three eyes i mean could we see a hundred home runs i i'd be a walked i always though henry here for auriol's fence you keep calm crushed davis's that create davis of the orioles now that might be what they call him but glare he's ants chris davis of the orioles hit like twenty home runs last year at rest in peace to that nicknamed yeah s at a fair point so he's taken the nickname okay well he said forty plus the past few years so yeah he's he he's earned it okay as you are taken it earned it however you'd like that yeah so those are the guys uh to to watch war instantly the thing about chris davis is he now could be seen and i think all in all likelihood we'll be seeing more time in the dh roll then he ever house before so he sort of going to be finding this dh slot as to be his permanent home from here on out i believe in oakland so i think that could do wonders for him as far as a mindset is concerned overall they need some guys to take hold of some spots in this rotation aside from tyndall graveman and sean mnaya uh i don't know that there's anything really guaranteed i mean this is a staff that had one bucking complete last year it was the last game of the season by daniel bigden so the rotation need some guys to really step up and really anchor themselves entrench themselves uh and what are the more intriguing parts about this club i think is their bullpen i think that has an opportunity to be a bright spot they were able to sort of bill backwards from blake tried and they brought in hatcher as well they brought in some other guys buford there so there there are some hope there there's a light at the end of the tunnel in that bullpen as well so uh aside from the young guys the young core that you.

"I mean he's on pays for thirty homers again but nothing else not not knocking in runs now heading for average and let's remember wasn't two thousand fourteen he started the year with a oblique straining had like one ninetysix he he never really recovered and he admitted that this is the type of injury that can linger for months yeah he he in fact beyond just that in 2016 at a awful finish to last season and then after the earth committed that injuries were plaguing him in that second half so he's shown us huge chunks of seasons where he's just not his premium self in the premium self being obviously the 2013 in 2015 and the first half of 2016 eric i think you're right i think there's a there's a concern here that he never quite comes back from this and gets back to that that that high level performer and if he's gonna hit one somewhere between one ninety and 225 the rest of the year yeah i think he's and the cut consideration at least that our standard game i want to keep them around and ailing deeper would you cut chris davis in our standard 10team game for trade manzini seaney no you wouldn't now i wouldn't oh i don't agree with that trimming seized higher on the player in the chris davis okay he's on pace for twenty eight and eighty five and he's batting to ninety he's hitting rhianna pitching better than lefthanded pitching he's a rookie cody bellenger obviously but or aaron judge but he's like the number three rookie in home runs and it looks all legitimate to me why wouldn't you do that i would do that now in a standard the because i don't expect chris davis about over to twenty when he comes back and even if he it's a few more homers immense seaney manzini's legit misuse playing every day is it playing first base rightfield the h he was in the lineup anyway.
