Grammy Awards: Performances, winners, highlights
"I will say this about the about the about the Grammys. It was long. I mean long it started at seven. And it ended at a quarter to eleven. Oh, yeah. That's yeah. That's really long. Yeah. And you the know you had your e. Red carpet, which I think started around noon. The get gets Seacrest out there. And there's you know, they're they're out there for three hours before the before the show so long. It was a long long night for all the people who were there. The overall. I mean, like I said earlier the Grammy's really is. Not like other award shows in that they're mostly concerned with the performances not so much, you know, the awards themselves. They only hand out a few awards during during the Grammy's mostly it's about. It's about the performances and there were there was a ton of performances on the on the show. Some were good some weren't. Like, I said for me the best performance of the night. With brandy Carlisle. Who I really like a lot. And I thought her I thought she gave the best performance. And and of course, you had you had your tributes there. Diana Ross turned seventy five and she did she did your basic Diana Ross over the top performance. And. Herger grants her grandson introduced her and he's nine and he's got like an incredible head of hair. He was he was real. He was really he was really very very funny this kid, and then there was a tribute to Dolly Parton, which was great because Dolly Parton. That's that's the one that. I I really wanna go back and watch. Yeah. It's it's you definitely should because. Between her and Cyrus working together. And then. Her singing the song called red shoes? I just you know, I mean, I love I love Dolly Parton. She's she's phenomenal. So but overall, I I mean, I did think it was way too long. And you know, they were cutting their speeches. Who people would get up there? And when they're when they're award, and then they were just like really blasting the music and cutting the speeches. Which at that point. It's like at this point man, the show is like four and a half hours long. But are we? What are you? What are you worried about the speeches for so? But yeah, I mean here are some of the winters are, you know, some of these winners are were surprising. I think. So like, for instance, record of the year went to this is America by childish Gambino, which I'm thrilled about because I love childish Gambino. But Donald Glover wasn't there. That was the that was the disappointing thing. It was like, you know, they want some major awards. One record of the year and run one song of the year. So those are two major major awards Donald Glover wasn't there. So this is America one song of the year at one record of the year album of the year went to golden hour by Casey muss graves. Who I was not very familiar with. But she's good. Best new artist went to do a leaper best solo pop solo performance went to JoAnne. Where do you think you're going by lady Gaga? Best pop duo or group performance went to shallow by lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, by the way, lady Gaga's performance was weird. I mean, she's she is a bit of a weird. Performer in general. But. It was very intense and crazy. She was wearing a weird civil know like a glittery jumpsuit and making all kinds of weird faces and stuff, and I just was I was the little I was a little confounded by her by your performance. And I really liked the song. I mean, obviously shallows a terrific song. And it's probably going to win an Oscar and a couple of weeks for her. But yeah, she and Bradley Cooper got the got the award for best pop duo or group performance. Best pop album went to sweetener by our 'Grande, Ariana GRANDE day, best rock performance with when bad. Does goodbye. Chris cornell. Chris cornell. How did he have a backlog of of new material is that what the deal is? That's that's got to be. Yeah. What happened there? Yeah. Well deserved. Well. Yeah. Mean he was the best deserved. Best rock song went to miss education. By Saint Vincent. Best rock album from the fires by Greta van fleet. Best alternative music album was colors by Beck. Best R&_B performance best part by her. Best urban contemporary album. Everything is loved by the Carter's best Rb album her by her. Best rap performance. Kings, dead Kendrick Lamar. And bubbling, by Anderson pock, or pack Anderson pack. Best rap song to God's plan by Drake. Best rap album went to invasion of privacy by Cardi B. So I have a question for you. Would you truly consider Drake a rapper? Yeah. I just feel like he just talks over. Yeah. No. He's a rapper. He's a rapper has never. I just never hear wrapping when I compared to like, I get he's different in an hands down mad respect to him for being different standing out everything. I just compared to everything else that's out there. I just never think. It's. And he's Canadian. Oh, wow. So best music video went to this is America, childish Gambino, man. Donald Glover, man. Yeah. When in some serious stuff that video rules. It was awesome. Yeah. Or the song is amazing to chose Gambino. Hey, you know, weird Al yankovic wanna wanna Grammy? That's that's too now for squeeze box the complete works of weird Al yankovic, which is best boxed or special limited edition package. So at one for the packaging. Yeah. I like that. Yankovic? What was it was it last year was the first time you want one? Two years who years ago, but it, but it took that long. Yeah. How did how did weird Al not? How did he not have a granny? I have no idea. How does he have a room full of Grammy's? So I don't know. You know, you know, they get so many weird categories. This is the thing about the Grammys is that there's like seven thousand awards they only hand out about six of them on the show, but there's like a million awards here. Best compilation soundtrack for visual media. What that went to the greatest showman. Best soundtrack for visual media, Black Panther. That one has my vote, but I'm a marvel fan. Yeah. You know, the music the music for Black Panthers. Great. I think you know, what for all those marvel movies? The scores have been awesome. Yeah. Just really outstanding. Let's see best country song went to space cowboy Casey muss graves. I'm assuming that's not the. It's not the Steve Miller song. I would I would imagine. Best traditional pop vocal album. My way by Willie Nelson. Best country duo group performance. Dan shea with tequila. So the the those guys performed those guys performed last night. Did they? Yeah. And I don't even know. I like, here's here's another thing. Whenever I watched the Grammys or or like music awards and stuff, especially the MTV, which I don't even try to watch anymore. The MTV video music awards because I feel like I'm one hundred and six years old. I have no idea who anybody is. Like when I was watching. I was watching the Grammy's last night. I'm like, I have no idea that is I've never heard this song before in my life. Deli part partner, Diana Ross word Sam smokey Robinson. I knew that. But yeah, you know, a lot of a lot of the stuff. That's like, you know, younger. I don't I dunno. Shawn Mendez guy. He was okay. He performed I believe he performed again. I think that was also with Miley Cyrus. Yeah. It was that was what Miley Cyrus to. She was all over the place last night. I try to be as open minded as possible. But I just do. I just like for the most part. I just kind of sit on my couch, and I don't I don't recognize anybody. I don't know who these people are so three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is the phone number if you'd like to to join us. If you watched what did you think what did you guys think of the the ceremony? What did you guys think of? Of the performances because there were a lot of performances. Let's see best is ain't got bluegrass. You've got traditional blues guy won the blues is alive. And well. Best spoken word album. Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter got himself a Grammy. Best music film. How is that? When did that become a category? I don't know. But I like it best music film. And I don't see. Wait a minute. I feel like Bowie's Quincy. From Quincy jumps before before. I heard that. I just would have gone with bohemian rhapsody. But yeah. Say. So. Yeah. And then also last night were the Bastas. Those are the British film awards. They were handed out as well at the same time. But I ended up watching the Grammys ex. I basically forgotten that the Baptist were. We're we're being handed out. That's why Bradley Cooper wasn't at the Grammys. Someone lady Gaga got up to to accept their award for their group or

I can't hear him. So Keith. So what's going on Keith? Keith has had a steady flow of houseguests. Right? Yeah. A couple of months now, since you moved down there so, but it's kind of quieting down now. Right? Yes. It's. For Christmas on October. I think I'm getting guest knocked over. Are you big Halloween party down the warlords? They should do that. Oh, thanks giving my outta rallying, don't even get me. Don't even get me excited about that. But. Got. Billy. Wanda down the per per day is somebody wasn't hearing a month. It's all felt it back to quiet time. Nello got the whole house back to yourself. Diesel is all like forlorn. He likes all the attention. He's such a Cutie pie. All right. So I, I should say we are talking about the mazing Chris Cornell, one of the really, really one of the really amazing vocalist that came out of the grunge. Movement and carried on through the two thousands of putting out great solo stuff, had some head great band, one of my favorite bands of all time actually audio slave. So Keith, why don't you of give us a little bit? Let's talk a little bit about. I know Keith, the city's been on Chris Cornell kick for a little bit. So why don't we start with the hawks ter- tells what's going on, but he talked about the Chris Cornell. Do. I think that there's Cuba come along that actually have an impact on my life as a robber plan. A pretty mercury sting and I'm gonna put Chris Cornell as a more modern day version of our plant. Whereas the band was behind him with phenomenal song Gordon talking about and he basically. When that man's saying when it opens his mouth manners. He got a great that great lyrics and you know, unfortunately, I don't know what was going on up in his head there sometime but ended his life. But at the same time, the music he left behind was legendary that yet I got a modern day note local Bosnian, very, very distinctive voice in the same way. The other two guys you talked about staying and our plan. I mean, he had that Barry sitting like the first note you knew who it was. Can name that in one. So what about you, what, what, what are your sort of with sort of overview? What would he have. We all know I'm not really hugely into the whole grunge scene. However, Chris Cornell is one of my stop. I, you know, my my, my stop is not nineties grunge, but I am giving Chris Cornell exception because he did have a fantastic voice. I absolutely love to garden when I was younger and I'm not as into audio slave, but I do like them. And I feel like also like that whole grunge thing. He made it his own. It wasn't like typical. This is grunge band. All right. And bring anyway. Yeah. I mean. I feel the same way too. I mean, he, I always heard it. I felt that Soundgarden. There's that some of those bands warhead their head, their feet more planted in hard rock seventies rock metal. And I think sound guards, definitely specially on. Loud his love and bad motor finger. You know, I think when they got up on the Dow up was called up on the downside. Down on the upside, close boom about. About. I think when when when we got to that, I think that they had kind of really made their sound more radio friendly with with slightly shorter songs. Some more like. Acoustic stuff. I think that super known is actually the record I'm actually thinking of is like they're sort of like album where they really had like, like all the big hits. You know, whereas real, I really prefer, I think that bad motor finger is the record where that that's that's the record. I always go back to for Soundgarden because the songs aren't quite as poppy. It's still supergrasses, but they had really at that point defined what their sound was going to be loud loud as love is, is a is a kind of like, we don't know who we are yet. They still had a little bit kind of had a little bit of eighties rock kind of mixed in a little bit and a couple of different things going on. But when I think when I did bad motor finger songs like outshined and rusty cage turned a, yeah, outshine. I thought that they really were like, I think it was really explosive. And I think it's also it's still really, really raw. You know, and and some of the songs like rooms room thousand years wide, and some of the longer tunes kind of drone and stuff that are killer tracks aren't quite as radio friendly, but I think they're really great. And I just I kind of that's sort of my period of Chris Cornell Soundgarden that I just really, really love. That's when I, when I saw the video outshine I was like jaw on floor, like who the is this just completely blown away by that. So what what do you? What do you wanna say about Keith. Song garden. Is a modern day leads up one. They were influential to mate. They could do heavy is heavy as you wanted to go. They were lumped in with the from. They could do a coup stick with someone that pallet at the helm, fall writing, vocal. You can do pretty much whatever you want the, like I said at times a Bank get super heavy. But at the same time they could write, you know, more laid back later on in based getting a little bit more mellow, red radio friendly. But with Chris has things than you can pretty much write your own tickets. I think they could have pretty much did whatever they wanted, but they were a very influential ban, I think. And one of the better if not the best to me modern rock bands of the last, you know, since the ground started, I mean, it's just, I mean, everybody gets all wrapped up in the whole like nirvana Pearl Jam thing. But I just, you know, this band me was heading shoulders above those days. I agree with that. That's that's what I was saying. They have their own sound in that time period. It's not just the typical grunge band of the nineties. Yeah. I mean, there was a lot of somewhat of sort of like a long with, you know, the the big ones nirvana Pearl Jam sound guards Alison chains in stone temple pilots. There was a lot of sort of like nameless faceless bans that you know the kind of popped up for like a couple of songs and then you know. Disappeared, but Soundgarden was really unique in the sense that I think that they really did kind of. I one of the things I did in Keith, maybe talk a little bit about this. They did it play a lot play around with.

"Just one hundred and four years old and he had a little party there was champagne and cheesecake but the thing that he is looking forward to most is dying this week david is tired of being alive he is not sick but he wants to die and in australia it is not legal to do physician assisted suicide so he is travelling switzerland which is eight thousand miles away it's not necessarily legal in switzerland either but i guess there's some kind of a loophole but it's interesting this is what he wants he says i would have preferred let's see i greatly regret having reached this age i would much prefer to be twenty or thirty years younger no i'm not happy i want to die it's not sad particularly what is sad is if one is prevented so in our state at actually is legal death with dignity but it's only for terminally ill patients so for someone like david who to simply is done that is not something that you can do anywhere so the question is should this be allowed he says why should it make me sad i don't regard it as grim i regarded as natural dying is a part of life this people bring up slippery slope arguments i think this is the classic example like the people take their lives every day in this world that are just depressed or they are having some sort of issue where they don't feel like they want to go on anymore to do it physicians assisted i think when you when you enact somebody else or bring somebody else into the equation to assist you that person now i think needs to have a justifiable motivation so when you're saying hey physician will you assist me in this endeavor when you're not terminal in you're like i know that he's old but he doesn't have a an imminent situation going on i think that there has to be a line drawn there like that physician i think to have a clear conscience like needs needs that information like he has to go through the rest of his life as well or her life that physician does also just being alive i think we have to be responsible talking about this in our i lost a girl that dated a number of years later and i knew she was suicidal and she ended up committing suicide and i thought it was so selfish and so mean to do that because i looked at other people that were friends and families that died from disease and i thought wow you're perfectly healthy out could you take your take your life not leave a note and then watch your family and friends suffers a result of this and then through talking about suicide on the show and having people reach out and i'll never forget a gentleman reach out to us he's a doctor and i'm certainly not gonna say his name but he said that he was turning fifty years old and he said every year he had twelve siblings and they go around the table and they talk about the thing that who's who's ever birthday it is when you turn fifty everybody at the table talks about what they love about you and so he said he knows that there'll be this moment they'll sit at the table siblings will say all these things that they appreciate in he'll sit there and the thing that he'll say to himself is wow i can't believe i haven't killed myself yet he said everyday wear up he sees a light at the end of the tunnel that light is a train and help it run he hopes that it runs him over you look at someone like chris cornell and as much as people loved him and you know his wife left him in fact she talks about a lot she's gone public and as much as people loved his music loved him personally and professionally there was a darkness there was a train that was coming for him and we see that a lot of artists so i i'm i'm always just interested in understanding people's pain rather than damning people and saying wow how could you do that you're perfectly healthy he'd be they're not perfectly healthy a difference between being physically healthy mentally healthy and it's really hard to understand there's a lot of things that are hard to understand unless you go through them like addiction or mental illness like it's hard to understand why would you want to do this but that person isn't it doesn't have anything to do with anybody else but themselves and and it's not even them a lot of the time it's just like the whatever's going on their brain that is not wired correctly leads them to believe that they don't belong is a factor but you'd have to probably formalize that in some way of saying this is quality of life has to break this threshold for dr to assist

"We often believe that people like chris cornell or chester benhington or anyone who is famous must wake up floating on air every day because they are that person it's the same conversation as what happened with robin williams several years ago where this man had made so many other people so happy and no one knew what was really going on inside of his brain in his body and i think it is important particularly for high achievers like yourself to regularly paws and to catch where this mental noise happens through this mental noise can destroy us if we do not catch it because we often think that person has money or that person has abb's that would be me beating i have that perception of of people are they of abb's they must wake up every day in being preferably successful my lifelong struggle getting the apps or that person has that relationship so they must wake up every day and feel happy in reality when we get to a certain level or when we get the guy you're the girl or the arabs our brains normalize that incredibly quickly and as a result the endorphins that kick in from getting that thing goal way very quickly so the reality is those things don't change how we feel more van for a moment and then our brains go back to comparing to something else it goes immediately cut back to comparing to someone else who is ahead of us comparing ourselves to some other form of measurement for example you can be incredibly financially successful and feel good about it.

"When compared conquer and particularly not at all that great scheme like so happy doing it scored something very particular about chris cornell because eamon soundgarden chris cornell is this kyw news king lisa gear he's you know he's a rock god he's almost i was saying earlier in the other conversation in many ways use a holdover of the '70s and other rock odds of the '70s and '80s and certainly up against the other bans from seattle of that time moore like much more ambivalent chris cornell never felt particularly ambivalent in terms of is his presence his authority is sexiness all these things they were real things but i am agean solo cornell also accessed the vulnerability the sole fullness all these other things that underpin that kind of like big theatrical rock presence but don't get play in a ban like soundgarden right the cool thing about now was that it is we're prefectly that have been a i i think that rocca's he could have been rocked aren't any era yup lake road ladylike 62 on an the full hop morc wa poorer experience was really fascinating fifth someone who who love sound art that who you know thought the world of chris cornell the bility emmy if i were with him think anything you know what i mean like you heard from the correo qpr and white brendam away and i think that kind of really rare for thing i could come out of the era he came out of particularly and he was so able to kind of.

"About both singers on the occasion are passing in euro from a very different perspective so i felt like in talking about the the the kind of feels associated above singers you're the guy wanted to talk to so let's start with chris cornell tell me a little bit about your your relationship to him and his voice and his singing and kind of what that meant to you at at a time of your life when that was happening so i think my vote in and chris cornell memory are kind of soundgarden hay day and i know what i wrote about him i wrote about it basically being the black hole friend video and i was a kid and our freak me out this kind of energy to a rock and roll to the kind of delightfully terrifying but i think with cornell you know i like most fellow stuff because it was weird and kind of unacceptable her a lot of hardcore soundgarden fan like when he put out that album look like kindle and on it all we definitely talked about that elliot very weird like but you could also at that time feet of clay for pretty much nothing you know he would like tour and duty shows and things soundgarden like a whole thing but you just like chilling with a or or like with a small backing banded play these like mall club and i i'm a punch when he was kinda wanted solo run is they were so cheap and i was like poor inflight had this really odd but in peering relationship with the low chris cornell that i think a lot of people probably will find hard to understand because the music itself with like not at all.
