Senate Ends Hope for Significant Wage Hike
"So we got the senate doing their senate thing today. Right to vote a rama. There's all these amendments and there was standoff happening in something that happened there today. A seven democrats and one independent who caucuses with democrats joined with republicans to shoot down raising the federal minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour as part of the biden cove. Relief package among those democratic. Novo's joe manchin of west virginia. Chris coons of delaware. The moment that really stood out was when arizona democrat. Kirsten cinema walked up to cast her. Vote miss cinema cinema. No out she represents arizona. Maybe that was a homage to the late. John mccain. Who famously did that to that. Repeal vote but that full thumbs down from arizona helped end hopes for a really big wage hike that the congressional budget office says directly affect seventeen million american workers on a bringing maria. Teresa kumar co founding president and ceo voto latino fetchacure former senior adviser senate democratic leader harry reid and current advisor to bernie sanders. Faz let me start with you. I want people to understand this. Vote before we analyze us. This was a vote that was going to fail either way. It was essentially a symbolic message. Vote because it needed sixty votes filibuster -able so going into this. Everyone knows it's not gonna be talking to pass. No republicans are going to vote for it. So it's a free ride. It's a layup you get up there and say yes. We want to fifteen our minimum wage. So it was very very surprising to me. A lot of people to see democrats eight of them in the caucus vote. No what is your explanation. Of course you've got to go back in history. A little bit where. President obama suggested raising the minimum wage to ten ten. It was hillary clinton during the two thousand sixteen campaign who suggested raising it to twelve. It was bernie sanders. Who's been pushing along with you to raise the wage to fifteen dollars an hour. And as a result of that we have gotten a lot of progress in the democratic caucus and not all the way clearly and painful. Chris you take senator cinema arizona's got a twelve dollar minimum wage. And in fact if you look at raise the wage which gradually raises the minimum wage to fifteen dollars over five years it would be at twelve fifty by year. Three which is where harris zona is so many ways it doesn't really impact arizona and yet you have center for cinema denying many people. Millions of people around the country are arrays of their wages. Maria wha what did you make so. I used to work in congress. A- as a hill staff for a long time ago on preparations and this was fairly unusual. Because what those eight did was say. That they were not going to deliver the biden agenda in the biden administration. Right now is going to figure out how to channel little lbj and demonstrate that there are consequences when there are not voting down for the presence agenda. As you mentioned. chris. This was a layup but i have to say when we when we witnessed this thumbs down by cinema. I think for a lot of folks people felt at at odds because when john mccain did it it was to save healthcare for millions of americans when she when she did today was turned down. This idea that there was going to be some sort of economic closer to economic committee. For millions of americans and fifteen dollars has even fifteen dollars does not keep pace with the with the inflation rate of the nineteen. Seventies the raiders really. I established it was perplexing on many many fronts but this is an opportunity really for joe biden to say. You're going to have to come down to the white house because we're gonna have a talking
Stimulus plan stalls as senators debate unemployment aid
"Leaders and moderate Democratic Senator Joe mention of West Virginia have struck a deal over emergency jobless benefits, breaking a nine hour logjam. It installed the party's showpiece $1.9 trillion covert really fill. The compromise, announced by the West Virginia lawmaker and a Democratic aide seems to clear the way for the Senate to begin a climactic marathon. Syriza votes expected to lead to approval of the sweeping legislation. Democrats had already set aside one battle over boosting the minimum wage mansion is probably the chamber's most conservative Democrat and the king maker in a 50 50 Senate. That leaves his party without a vote to spare. Chris Lee reports the Senate is in what's being called a voter rama over the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill where Syria's of amendments are voted on back to back. This comes after Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson forced to nearly 11 hour holed up on the bill. Forcing Senate clerks to read the massive 628 page legislative package out loud. Senate Budget Committee chair Bernie Sanders open the debate by introducing an amendment to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. That provision was included in the House's version of the bill, but it was thrown out last week by the Senate parliamentarian who ruled it was not permissible under budget reconciliation, Sanders says that process is wrong. It is an absurd process. That we allow an UN elected staff of somebody who works for the Senate, not elected by anybody. To make a decision as to whether 30 million Americans get a pay raise or not. I don't care how the parliamentarian rules. No parliamentarian should have that power. People here want to vote against raising them in ways you have that right? Want to vote for it? And I hope you do you have that right, But we should not shuffle off that responsibility. Toe What UN elected staff. That's wrong. Senators voted to reject Sanders proposal 58 to 42 8, Democratic senators Kirsten cinema of Arizona. Jon Tester of Montana, Jan Shaheen and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Chris Coons and Tom Carper of Delaware. Angus King of Maine and Joe Manchin of Virginia voted No. The Senate has since been stalled for several hours. In a debate on the extension of federal unemployment benefits. Democratic senators have a slim margin to get the bill approved. And if just a single Democrat votes against the bill, it could jeopardize the entire

Covid relief talks hit another wall as Congress runs short on time to send help
"The trump administration through another option on the table yesterday. Making nine hundred. Sixteen billion dollar offer to democrats. That has the support of senate majority leader mitch. Mcconnell according to the wall street journal the proposal came after democrats rejected. Mcconnell's attempt to narrow the scope of the relief and to exclude both assistance to state and local governments favored by democrats and liability protections which are favored by republicans. The president's plan eliminates the three hundred dollars per week and unemployment insurance. Found in the bipartisan. Bill democrats say that is a nonstarter. Join us now. Senior writer at politico co author of the playbook jake sherman. He is in msnbc political contributor. So jake a new one thrown into the table from secretary. Mnuchin lobs to nancy pelosi. So we've got the bipartisan nine hundred. Eight billion dollars. This new one from the white house. There's a lot of talk about things getting done. We had joe manchin and chris coons confidently on here yesterday. Saying they believe something will get done before the holiday recess but are we actually any closer to a deal. No this is ridiculous. Would i will say this though. So let's just take a step back yesterday mitch. Mcconnell as you said tried to remove the contentious issues from the table so democrats want state and local funding republicans. Don't republicans want liability overhaul democarcy democrats largely are opposed to that. So he said you know what. Let's deal with those later. Let's just do the things. We agree on democrats said note. This deal that steven mnuchin put on the table. While it doesn't have everything the democrats want is the broad outline of a deal that both sides could get around. I mean yes. The unemployment insurance enhanced unemployment insurance is lower than it probably should be according to most democrats but this is a negotiation right so the democrats can come back and say no. We don't want ex. We want expos five hundred and then you're on the brink of a deal. Willie you really are. Here's what i would say right now. This bipartisan group. god blessed them Democrats and republicans a room talking about covid relief. It's time is very short. So if they want to deal the leadership. Nancy pelosi and mitch mcconnell needs to get into a room and work something out because time is very short and people really need assistance. And it's not only new money. While it's programs are expiring. Very critical unemployment programs have expired or are expiring. ppp does program that has kept businesses open. Bipartisan program is done. Needs to be refreshed renewed. There's a lot on the line here not much time left. And so. Casey are the people you cover. Every day you inject both on capitol hill really prepared to go back and face. Their voters in saying sorry over the holidays. We just couldn't get anything done over the last six seven months that that's exactly what i was going to say really listening to jake talk about that. No is the answer. I mean going home the day after christmas these benefits many of them expire going home and trying to explain to people. Why that is. I mean people are hanging on by the fingernails by the skin of their teeth. They have been making it work for all of the time. But if this goes way economists people in both parties recognize and. I think the way that we talk about this important. It is a relief package. It's not a stimulus. It's not as though they're adding things into the economy. They are trying to patch holes. It's a much different too much. Different thing. And jake one one thing i wanted to underscore and to get your take on. Is this question about direct checks because as as you outlined. There's this complicated calculus between okay. They don't want president trump to blow it up mitch. Mcconnell wants to do what the president wants to do. Mcconnell's priority is liability. He said okay. I'll take that off the table. If democrats take their top priority off the table. Democrats go for that. I mean you've got all this back and forth but for people who are looking for a check in the mail. The president obviously wants to put his name on those checks. There are people like republican. Josh hawley in the senate who want to do that. What's your sense on whether this is actually something. That's going to end up in this bill. I mean i don't think democrats are gonna go for checks at the expense of unemployment insurance but do you think they can find a compromise on that i do i. I don't think it star off casey. I mean we reported yesterday. I believe the days Baumel together for me. But i think it was yesterday in playbook that mitch mcconnell was softening and he was coming around to the idea of direct payments in the bill. Obviously nancy pelosi is for them. Obviously chuck schumer is for them. The matrix is see here is state and local in liability ride together and then everything else is in the mix separately right. So there's i don't see in my estimation any sort of compromise that would sub out direct payments and unemployment direct payments are now firmly in the mix because the white house put it in And that's important amino democrats. There is theory out. There on mute for is undoubtedly casey among republicans on capitol hill that they that nancy pelosi and chuck schumer didn't want to check with donald trump's name on it at this point who cares right i mean if you're a democrat like just get these checks out the door i but i i agree with you casey. They can't solve out some of these unemployment insurance programs for direct checks. I don't think. I just think that would be a a trade off. That is a little bit arts at the swallow.

GOP pushes Barrett toward court as Democrats decry sham.
"Republicans powered Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett close to confirmation yesterday pushing past Democrat objections and other properties during the covid nineteen crisis in the drive to seat President Donald Trump's pick before the November third election. The Senate Judiciary Committee said October Twenty second for its vote to recommend Barrett's nomination to the full Senate the final confirmation vote expected by month's end. You don't convene a Supreme Court confirmation hearing in the middle of a pandemic when the Senate's on recess when voting has already started in the presidential election in a majority of states declared Senator Chris coons. Republicans eager to fill the seat of the late Justice Ruth Bader. GINSBURG counted that trump is well within the bounds to fill the vacancy and they have the votes to do it. Barrett's information would bring the most pronounced ideological change on the court in thirty years poised to launch a new era of court rulings on abortion voting rights and other matters that are now open to new uncertainty. The forty eight year old Barrett was careful during two days of public testimony, not to tip her views on many issues or take on the president who nominated her facing almost twenty hours of questions from senators. She declined to offer specifics beyond the vowed to keep open mind and take the cases as they come. Barrett refused to say whether she accepts the science of Climate Change under questioning from Kamala Harris saying she lacked the expertise to know for sure and calling it a topic to controversial to get into. Barrett framed acknowledgement of a man made climate crisis as a matter of policy not science when she was pressed by the Democratic senator from California the Federal Appeals Court judge responded that she did think Corona virus was infectious and smoking caused cancer but rebuffed Harris on the climate change question for seeking to solicit an opinion on a matter of public policy. Especially, one that is politically controversial effectively ignoring science in the face of the ever-present. Climate. Crisis.

"A White House doctor declared he's no longer at risk for transmitting Corona virus despite no negative tests being disclosed. Former Vice President Joe Biden is aggressively campaigning in battleground states after recent polling showed Trump losing ground crucial to his 2016 win. But all eyes are on Washington, where today the Senate Judiciary Committee begins confirmation hearings for President Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Cockney Barrett. Despite Biden's please for GOP senators to push off the vote till after the election, it appears Democrats are helpless to stop it. Senator Chris Coons on Fox News Sunday outlined the Democratsstrategy president Trump has said he would on Lee nominate someone who would overturn the affordable care act. Taking away health care protections for more than 100 million Americans in the middle of a pandemic on both President Trump and members of the majority on this committee has said they would only vote for a nominee who would overturn Roe versus Wade. As I will lay out in my questioning this week. We shouldn't be having this hearing with two members of the committee infected with Covad. It's rushed, it constitutes court packing, and her views are too extreme. To qualify her to serve on this court. Republicans have put the screws to Biden for refusing to answer whether he'd support adding more justices to the Supreme Court. Judge Baird is confirmed He's resisted giving an answer, claiming President Trump wants that to become the narrative not what Republicans are doing right now to jam through a nominee and cement. Conservative majority with an election underway. And while Biden's expressed opposition to court packing in the past, critics say his silence indicates he wants it on the table. Along with some of the other defenses. His base has called for Senator Ben Sasse on Fox News Sunday. It's grotesque. Vice President Biden won't answer that really basic questions on it isn't just one branch of government what they're really talking about a refusing to talk about Is a suicide bombing of two branches of government. What they're talking about is blowing up the deliberative structure of the United States Senate by abolishing the filibuster, making it possible to turn the Senate into just another.

"News the words of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer today on Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Cockney Barrett. Schumer says If Barrett is confirmed, she should step aside from any cases involving the outcome of the election and the upcoming challenge to the affordable care act. Other Democratic lawmakers oppose Barrett, including Delaware Senator Chris Coons, She has taught at a well regarded law school. She clerked for Justice Scalia, but she has views that make her not qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. But Republicans like Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse disagree. If Amy Barrett were running for the United States Senate from the state of Illinois, she would have policy positions that she'd lay out to the American people. That isn't what a judge's job is. Sassen Kun's both on Fox News Sunday. Barrett's expected to face questioning and confirmation hearings beginning tomorrow over the issues of abortion, healthcare and her faith. Twenty years have been active in politics thirty. I've been to my share of rough and tumble debates particularly at local campaigns and I've had my share of unconventional onus but that was unbelievable. It was simply awful to sit through the rush the raw force of the negative aggressive insulting interrupting. Energy directed by President Trump at former vice president, Biden and the audience and our country in the world. One of my sons immediately following the debate texted me. They must be cheering in Russia and China the team of us that were out there to do sort of post debate spin rapid response for the Biden campaign were just silent as a group for minutes. Afterwards, it was really hard to endure. So Joe Biden Dr Jill Biden former second lady Joe Biden was about ten feet to my left and Mark Meadows and Don Jr. about ten feet to my right. And it was striking that they all walked in unmasked and sat there without masks through the entire thing even as staff person, I think a staff physician from the Cleveland. Clinic. Came around and try to get them to wear masks and it was striking to me at the time just how sweaty. Read how angry trump seemed through the whole thing. Later, when we learned that he was infected with Covid, nineteen may well have been covered positive for that debate. It added a layer of the and seriousness to the fact that he was literally yelling at Joe Biden for ninety minutes from a few feet away. I. Got Tested twice actually once rapid s one. The PTR test both negative, and then waited and waited hoping in until we got a negative test confirmation for a joe and Joe Biden there's now a covid nineteen outbreak at the White House that has infected I think at last count twenty one people including senators, senior members of the president's team as well as president trump and first lady Melania trump staff. Of the White House reporters and they are still refusing to do even the most minimal contact tracing ordered to publicly embrace a relevant public health standards. So what was already a horrifying experience being in the room for that debate? Then over the next week has sort of turned into a slow rolling horror as the president has made his own covert infection into. A piece of political theater and is now being replayed on cable shows all day a proudly taking off his mask and recording. Then re recording his triumphant reentry still infected to the white. House. I I was gobsmacked at the visual of Marine One swooping in to MED EVAC the president of the United. States to a military hospital then three days later watching this. One swoop back in and take him back to the White House for this cinematic return even though he is infected even though once he climbed all those stairs, you can see him gasping for air you have been in public life for more than twenty years you are on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. You travel around the world and talk to world leaders in this statesman position that. You're in how do you even explain this to the world if you can well Jonathan I, you know, I, do think it's important that Joe. Biden Joe Biden and the whole Biden campaign team step back they took down attack ads. They publicly expressed their concern, their prayers for the president first. Lady and their health as did I as did most liberal leaders in our country president trump. Does. Get absolutely world class healthcare. He was whisked by Marine One helicopter from the fortress like White House to a dedicated wing at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. There is a dedicated presidential sort of sweet over there and he was treated with a cocktail of the most cutting edge treatments that your average American doesn't even have access to the combination of the widely used disappear with the. Less, widely used steroid that's commonly applied for those who are in some distress and a new monoclonal antibody treatment that's not yet approved for general use and he comes back saying several days later. Oh I feel better than I've ever felt better than twenty years before there's nothing to be afraid of don't let this virus room in your life. He even said that he thinks he's immune. I mean. He is the world's leading source of. About this pandemic and has inspired imitators from the president of Brazil to things said and done by Putin who declared that he had a effective vaccine before there was any stage three clinical trials, donner results released.

I'm grateful for the partnership of Senator Graham now, the chairman of the judiciary committee in reintroducing. Our bipartisan Bill with senators tell us in Booker to protect the Muller investigation. This is so stupid. They're going to protect the Mueller investigation. Nobody's fired Muller. And they would love it. If Trump fired Muller, they would love it. But they know he won't. So they keep banging pots and pans about this all this investigations being threatened. How's it being threatened? Muller is all over the damn place goes all over the country goes all over the world. I remember he was an Arab countries then here there and everywhere he hires these Liberal Democrats who are donors to Democrats who stop and the guy. Nobody's stopping the guy. So they put up these phony issues, they manufacture these issues. Galahad that report by the New York cash shut up you idiot. Let's go on to Mark Warner. Mark warner. This guy's everywhere. He was on TV, obviously Skype. He was in his mansion. He was. He he was dressed quite oddly, quite.

"When. Welcome back. You might recognize that music is means because that's FOX and friends. So I've been hosting for the last twenty years on the Fox News channel and this morning. I had a chance to talk to Senator Chris coons talked to a one on one. And I just think that if you want to get somebody rational, he's somebody you go to Joe mansions and other guy you go to he's not dug in and I thought he'd be a good person to talk to you about the president's decision to not digging on the concrete wall and say, I'll change the material and I'll change the structure. So here's my interview with Chris coons in its entirety. The new democratic chairman of the House Armed Services committee, Adam Smith, saying the president can declare a national emergency and build the border wall. Joining us now to discuss from his perspective democratic Senator of Delaware. Chris coons center. Do you think the president does have the ability to do that? And you look at the border patrol border situation. Right now is crisis crisis worthy. Well, I'm one of many Democrats who has voted for and is willing to invest in border security. I do think we need to have secure borders. A lot of the fight. We seem to be having now is over exactly how we will improve our border security the rest of that clip from congressman Adam Smith. He said the president does have the power to declare emergencies. But if he uses it in this way, this time it's very likely to face legal challenge. There's a well settled supreme court case in which president Truman tried to nationalize the steel industry during the Korean war, and that was overturned by the supreme court. It's not clear whether the president could use the military to construct a border fence there's some recent decisions and a statute from seventy six that says he can't the better way for us to move forward. Brian is to reach a responsible compromise. Here that recognizes our broken immigration system needs to be resolved. And we need to invest in border security president, Bob, I know you wanted to get details on this. But one of the things he says, listen, I'm all deal slats, fencing and steel is what I'm in for is that the type of compromise movement towards compromise at five point seven billion dollars that you might be able to support. Well, I'll remind you just two weeks. Ago departing chief of staff John Kelly, former secretary of homeland security rolled out the same idea, he said, look months and months ago, we got away from a concrete border wall and steal slats because it's what we need at the border and the president the next day literally on Twitter said no, no we're still committed to a concrete border. I hope the president will hold to that position. Because that is a minor but important difference in technology a fourth century concrete wall. You can't see through will be less effective border barrier. Look not one mile of new border fencing has been built this year. Despite the one point three billion we appropriated last year. I am someone who's willing to see more border fencing as long as we choose technology that DHS says is going to be effective, and I do think his moving towards steel slats rather than concrete wall. If it holds is important the person who's missing from these negotiations is Mitch McConnell. The majority leader look the majority leader had us go out of session just before Christmas. When the entire Senate unanimously voted for a package that would have kept the government open. He's now saying I'm out of this right until the president says what he will clearly stand for what you've just cited. There is progress. Senator I'd be better if you're into this too because you seem to have a level headed wanna get things done. Senator Chris coons, thanks so much. Thank you. He does. And at least see somebody wants to talk. So for the most part Nancy Pelosi has made it clear, she doesn't want to talk to you only says open up the government, then I'll talk I'm not giving you one dollar for the wall. So Chris coons is there Joe Manchin is reasonable logical. Dick Durbin for the most. Part is to Nancy Pelosi listened to her cut nine you recalibrating your assessment of of how you can work with this president. Well, let me first say that our purpose in the meeting at the White House was to open up government impression you get from the president that he would like to close government build a wall, but also abolish congress. So the only voice that mattered was his own Bali's congress. No just have congress be somewhat compliant. But I think every president wants that dick Durbin weighed in dick Durbin who came with the Senator Senator Lindsey Graham with the president game twenty five billion for the wall in exchange for Dhaka. And the president said, no, I need more came up with the other pillars. Cut ten. Their argument is if you agree to it. Then why can't you agree to something similar now? What is your response to that Willie? I would just say do you? Remember the president's words. How could you forget a concrete wall two thousand miles long from CD shining sea paid for by the Mexicans? How many times did he say that to the American people that is not what any of us have ever voted for in the past? Well, he now says it doesn't have to be embarrassed. Well, he's changed. He's changed demand from time to time, and he's changed the amount of money. He's asking for dramatically from two billion to five billion to eleven billion to twenty five billion even to seventy billion dollars. And when we asked for specifics, how are you going to spend this money? What are you gonna do with it? He basically says we'll shut down the government till you agree on it. That is not an approach that comes up with a safe border, which Democrats certainly want. I don't even always talking about the seventy billion the most was twenty five billion. We'll do finished off the wall. But now he needs less is going to go steal. They're going to go fencing improvement and would early was said by Chris coons, you know, we gave them money as a spending it. Yeah. He spent a lot. Out of it. He's painted on. What does he charity hotter? Hiring more border guards and fixing the fence and making it bigger and better because that was the first thing and they had to do it in the El Paso sector. So we'll see where it goes. Because you don't spend money right away. Doesn't mean it's not being used. It's eventually going to be used to be wasted. We come back redbeard joins us talked about ending the shutdown is so much more. Brian Kilmeade show don't move. It's monday. It's news time on the new one zero one five FM seven twenty a m k DWA good morning. John Shafer in Nevada death row inmate who declared he wanted to die. Lamar Alexander said here's three better options. And what we're doing right now more we're going to start to leaving. If the president goes four more days and shows no progress Senator Chris coons. Here's a little of my interview cut nineteen. I am someone who's willing to see more border fencing as long as we choose a technology that DHS says is going to be affective, and I do think his moving towards steel slats rather than concrete wall. If it holds is important. See he said, I don't like the fact that general Kelly came out last week and his exit interview with the LA times says we've moved away from wall, and we've gone to other things fencing and slides and the president disavowed it he didn't really he was pushing back on the fact that the president gave up on the border wall because the president is willing to give up on that concept. But what is actually made of is the difference? But I get it. The president does change the goal lines a lot. And if you're seeing they're digging in if you're on his team or against him. It keeps moving and I get that real quick on twenty twenty Senator Elizabeth Warren had some big crowds in Iowa. The problem is so far she's not showing she can physically hold up. We can all get colds. I've lost my voice before I get it. But the one thing about running for president. He gotta have endurance. He got to be able to keep going. You gotta be able to not stop do things. Gene think you're capable of. And it's seventy something President Trump outworked. Everybody said, Elizabeth Warren lost your voice. On day one. But she addressed one of the most controversial things and that is her heritage cut twenty one. I am not a person of color. I am not a citizen of the tribe. Would I I ran for public office. The first time was in two thousand twelve and.
