"Peterson? Did you screen jock Peterson? We're like, what do you mean, did we screen them? You know? He's young kid. He's raking. Yeah, and we wanted to have him on. They were like, well, that was a terrible interview. We're like, I'm not going to tell you it's one of the best we've ever had. It's not going on the resume tape. It was really weird, but he was just weird. And that's what it was. It was a weird interview, it was a little different. By the way, nobody was changing the channel. It wasn't so bad that you were going to stay on the channel. You're going to be parking. Yeah, so so Rudy, do you remember when we kind of get yelled at after the fact because he wasn't screened properly? Where it really felt like a manager was like, hey, that interview kind of sucked. Let me go in there and kick these guys in the dick for a little while. Do you remember that story? Were you with us? It was a bad interview. He was, I don't think he was super into it, but also he had this like giggle that we played as a drop for like a while and it was just like, I don't know, there's like childish laugh from a grown ass baseball player who I mean he was still young at the time. But it was just kind of surprising and you know, he wasn't super engaged and it was fine. Like he clearly didn't really give a shit about the interview, but he had this weirdly boyish I don't even know. We got a drop out of it. That's right. We got the giggles. We just kept playing the laugh drop for a while. And then I just want to be like, so wait a minute, so it was the new policy here that every time we book any single guests, we have to go through and screen and pick up every single interview they've ever done and then see if they're going to be good on the phone for 7 or 8 minutes. Like, hey, we had a guy on a little phone or didn't work out. It was weird, though. And I don't know. Can I ask you a bigger picture question about this? Yeah. What's the batting average on baseball players being a successful 12 minute hit on a national radio show? Is it like 10%? 15? It's low. Most of the athlete interviews. I can not emphasize this enough in the beginning when I was doing the overnight 2006, 2007, 2008 and into 2009. You'd be sitting there and you'd go like, oh my God, Doug McVeigh had a walk off single in the tenth. We can get him. He'd be like, we can get in the cave. Right after the hit. Are you shitting me? Be like, yeah, we gotta feel good. Doug, take us through that last at bat. What'd you see? Doug, what did that hit mean for your team? Heading into the road trip. You guys are 44 and 60. When like this, what could it do for you guys the rest of the way? So that was just Gatorade's cold, huh? It's got a really, you're feeling it a couple minutes later. Does interviews are so bad. So the worst. We lived for a man. We had a 6 hour show and the other thing too is that I don't know if people understand this inside part of the hustle. There'd be update guys, all right? And they'd get like 50 bucks for ESPN and they would just be like, hey, we're going to go live now to Busch stadium. And he'd be like, all right, hey, it's Jack Jack buck here. Actually, I don't want to use a real name, because it wasn't Jack buck. I don't know why they jumped in St. Louis and the whole thing. All right, we got Doug, Doug schmitz on, be like, hey, Doug Schmidt, with WK one. Chris Carpenter's scoreless through 6. That's live Doug from Busch stadium. Back to you guys. And we'd be like, fuck it. All right, okay, we're going to keep our eye on that one. Chris Carpenter 6 scoreless. Huge game in the NLC. The phone killed off this. Once people could look the shit up on their phone, there was no reason to go to Doug and St. Louis for updates. But that guy would get like 50 bucks. And then Doug, again, make believe guy, would call our producer back and go, hey, I'm in the locker room right now. And I can get us David freeze. They can get this David free. He'll be like, holy shit. They've got to be right here. We're like, hey, we're going to David freeze live. And I'd be like, no way, we got fucking David freeze. The audio is always terrible. Right. So David. I don't know if you would call it like a runner or whatever. He would hand his cell phone in the locker room, David freeze that David freeze would be like hello. And you're like, hey, what's going on? Two for four tonight, but real swing is you're able to take two or three from the cubs. How did it feel? And then he'd just be like, well, you know, we got to keep our and we were so happy whenever we got any of those. And then it didn't, it probably dawned me too late because you come into the business that way until you were like, hey, let's start turning down some of the athlete interviews, especially when it's 7 or 8 minutes, which by the way, always proved that there was another version of this could have been much better and also why I think podcasts are so much more successful in a way or preferable now to rating, not just because the advertising because you get all the warm up stuff and you know, by minute, ten, you should have something cooking if the guy's the right guest and you've got to get the point. That's the key point. They need a lot of foreplay. Like a lot. Yeah. Yeah, we really did put some mood music on. They need a lot of caressing and making out by.

"Well brian walden. The the playoffs are here. Had a a fun game last night. With the red sox and the yankees. And now it's the national league's turn and that means it's the cardinals and the dodgers good morning to you in. This should be a fun night. A baseball absolutely. And it's pleasure to talk to you on the on the eve of this big game. The whole season comes down to one nine inning game and of course max scherzer the the local products. Who's been so successful for. So long against adam wainwright at for me. This feels like the best possible situation for the cardinals which is come in and that one game and punch knockout. When it's still in my opinion the best team in baseball which is los angeles dodgers and shares. Her obviously is a tremendous competitor. He reminds me a lot of chris. Carpenter in how he approaches his work on the mound. But there's a crack in the door and that is at zor. His last two times out a gave up eleven runs in ten and a third innings. And that's very uncharacteristic for him you don't know if maybe he was cruising or maybe there's a you know some fatigue or a minor injury you know he's not as young as it used to be of course either wayne right on the other side of the coin you know. Both pitchers are well rested. So you know. There's no reason why those two couldn't pitch deep into this game and of course we're a twenty six man roster teams can put a number of pitchers ready and they'll be probably quicker with the hook than usual even though these guys are our top line guys for example on the cardinal side and then we haven't seen rosters yet but we believe that both dakota hudson and miles michael will be available for long relief then. Of course you have. Kim and potentially jack flirty as well. So you could potentially have five starters Ready to pitch this game for the cardinals. You know what's interesting is how we saw the game play out last night with the red sox and the yankees to your point that. Hey if a guy's not looking the way that you want to see him go you're gonna pull them. And that's what aaron booed did last night with garrett cole and you may see that tonight with either wayne writer sherzer. It's very similar situation. Dan i mean garrett colas was considered the best pitcher on either one of those two rosters and you know in in that big game..

"The criticisms that people have often about the cardinals and their fans. I would generally argue could be levelled at a lot. Almost every fan base and the demographics of their fans in general sense of the cardinals kind of like for for a variety of reasons. Kind of take a hit for that. I would say that that sometimes they deserve. But also i would. Argue is dramatically different than your average kind of baseball fan. Not the of this podcast. Of course but i think you know what i mean and so you know i think there's an element of that. I also would say that. Like part of it has always been larussa and just like general like let's not forget like for like three weeks of this season de national emergency of baseball. Was tony larussa. Because dale surveys hasn't been closed people kind of moved on from that. But like the russa gets people very very dialed up and he will always of course represented the a representative the cardinals in that way. But i also think that. I feel like it misses something because this is so. This is so different than daniel. The scelzo and pete cosma out of nowhere like taking down a very fun and very likable national team. Which i've always thought was part of it to the cardinals. Had the cardinals when they went on their postseason run were beating some really likeable teams whether they were the nationals of the pirates. Or the brewers like highlight teams from those kind of franchises. Like the people love that that that pirates team in thirteen and people love. That brewer seem in eleven. And i love that mets team in six. So i think that there's the national team in twelve so i think there's an element of that to it. That people are just like this. This seemed like jeff weaver. I mean come on. So i get it. I totally. I totally get that. I do think it misses something kind of interesting about this team. This team is a very different personality. That it's hard to imagine albert pool holes in chris carpenter tolerating harrison baiter. In like like they were he would be considered this this flake. And we're and were trying to tamp him down and tell that the old cardinals idea that you play the game the right way. That's not how the carters playwright. That's not how plays not how neil plays as i are not oh place. There's a lot of like fun personalities. On this team that i think are very different than what people think of when they think of the cardinals. Nothing in matters totally understand. But i'm just saying that. Like i would argue. This team has a different and more interesting personality than perhaps some cardinals teams in the past. You mentioned like the sort of general state of fandom. And i. I have a question you have to help me out. Well because see the team that i theoretically like best. Hasn't been in the postseason. Since i was in high school that maybe they're trying to change that right now and so. I'm curious in a situation like this where you didn't really expect to get to october. And then you rattled off seventeen wins and you're in a playoff spot when you look back on the season is that gonna be enough for you. Think like do you feel like everything that comes after. This is sort of gravy. I'm gonna ask you like productivity. Single actually happened in this wildcard game at some point here but they have. They already sufficiently exceeded your expectations. Such that you will look back on this season or cardinals. Baseball and bill. Hey like we had a good run. This was a success. Or will you be thoroughly if they don't manage to dethrone one of the hundred wind teams in the west. No it's definitely the former they they've shown proof of concept here. I at the beginning when we first started talking i was talking about that. Press conference at the cardinals had in two thousand nineteen. Where the you you remember how the carter scored like i think. The cardinals scored. I check fan graphs..

"Tonight. And paulin makita researcher. Espn he's a honcho on the show. Get up he says he's on show and mike greenberg has advise this otherwise you doing today. I am doing extremely well this morning. Working from home and really taking things to a really to a new low today. I wanted to be starting very shortly. When i pop up the podcast here. A couple racks of ribs in the smoker very early in the morning. I'm just thinking all these liberties at this point he from home has become so normal. Now that i'm essentially just jeopardizing my career. But you know what i think. Ribs are the best food in the world and had imagine growing up in a farm. You a great. I'm not gonna go there. I'm not going to give my opinion on ribs. Not my favorite things. I would i feel like is going on. You're trying to distract from what's going on with your phillies really wiscon- bed this is this is comfort food for you because we all thought the village who take advantage of that soft schedule and know they're drifting what happened last night crushed me. I think zack wheelers. Siam chances just absolutely vanquished that ridiculous oh to pitch to cisco mahia. He is bill for some reason to muto. Felt like it was a wise idea to throw belt high fastball. Out over the plate otsu so you get what you pay for. That was a devastating loss for this team. I think when this when we sorta right the postscript here for this for the police season that should be one of those games that really stands out in on the other side it demonstrates how incredibly good the raise our when it matters the only plus fifty run differential butter in the ninth inning alone. It is completely absurd with those guys do late in games than as a phillies fan. I really takes it at last night. Yeah i love the raise tweet that they send out last night that they're on pace which is not something here from teams very often but the run win a hundred games Which just tell you again. You know just how good that team is I wanted to get your thoughts on the melena first off. You believed that next year will actually b.'s. Last year because when i heard that yeah right he'll he'll catch another year after that miami is to say yes at least it will be his last year for the cardinals the way that the cardinals sort of announced it made. It seem like we love yati and next years His last year with us. I suppose if he played really well next season. There's no obvious reason why as it's help is there. He wouldn't wanna play elsewhere. I think there's something magical sort of About baseball's mystique when you play two decades for the same team and no one else has definitely been a thing over the years but it would spun me if he played in twenty twenty. Three for the cardinals. But it wasn't stunned me. If you've played in twenty twenty three for someone else all right what what else do you have on yati. Well boston think it just provides us an opportunity to sort of put his career in perspective and the reason for it is because his sort of hall of fame. Candidacy has been a topic of much debate on the internet. And that's because he's produced about forty wins above replacement forty war for his career. But i've yet to talk to each single person whose opinion i value around the game. That thinks that's a good approximation for the value that he provides bumps her. They'll give you two reasons. Why think that number comes up short. The first of which is since molina became the cardinals everyday catcher in two thousand five. You had me track this note for years now. St louis has allowed eight hundred and thirty stolen bases which is three hundred seventy nine fewer than any other team in dust. It should come as no surprise that during that time. The cardinals lead all baseball in double plays turned a bunch of those are courtesy of yati and secondly his career. Era has a catcher mystery. Point six nine to look at all. Other cardinals catchers since two thousand five four point one eight that is a massive gap the gap equivalent to the difference between rank second and sixteenth team during that time or better yet difference between the careers of mike and freddy garcia. Half a run per game buster. So if i told you that yod defense was worth happy. Run per game. Would you laugh me out of the room. Absolutely not look. Here's the thing. And i just talked to doug glanville about this. I really feel like it's we get closer to the voting on molina. The most important voices are going to be those of ex players. Earn players like a lot of times. You know when we talk about a player like miguel cabrera nerd like me can go on the internet and find numbers and say miguel. Cabrera is amazing. But i think that we're going to need players former players in a guys like chris carpenter to talk about a hear their voices in an and have them explain. Exactly what it means to have your team allow a by a you. Almost half the number stolen base attempts to As compared audrey during the career and what that means for pitcher the peace of mind for fisher standing out on the mound where he didn't even have to worry about the guy at first base. You know what they're not gonna run on him. I think our catcher evaluation is decades away from being a science and yati or molina's cases a perfect example of that. The only thing i'll add is only two catchers have ever been inducted on the first ballot. Johnny bench in padre rigas so there are all sorts of people that seem to think is going to add his name to that list but history says he's got enough dope fine all right. Tell me about an elite hitter. We don't recognize the way that we should. His name. is your alvarez for the astros and i for the life of me. Can't figure out why we don't consider this a frequent superstar buster. He's one of three players in the history of baseball hoo through two hundred career game which is exactly where he's at right now. Has fifty home runs and fifty doubles. The other. two are chuck klein and joe dimaggio. Both did so before world war two. He is the best hitter on the best lineup in baseball by a long shot. He's angry at the age of twenty four. I don't have much else to add. Except for the fact that if you're putting together a list the best players in baseball and he's not on it it's just not a credible list what he got in the san francisco giants and just keep on rolling Or a weekly basis complaining. That i'm not talking about them on the podcast enough and you know what the right because they just keep winning. And i've not been able to figure out how they really dug into it this week number one. Do they hit when they have to buy. Oh ps giants on the fourteenth. Best batting line in baseball with the game tied the seventh best batting line baseball with a lead but the own the best batting line in baseball and ps of seven eighty four when trailing within a game number two. they're pitching defense are just in sync. The giants pitching staff owned the highest round ball rate in baseball forty seven percent and despite that volume their defense ranks four in baseball in converting ground. Balls into out at about seventy six percent and three that pitching staff is the most efficient in all of baseball. Giants pitchers average about sixteen pitches per inning. Nephew was in the majors and that is in large part. Because they're the most aggressive pitching staff in baseball. They only first pitch strike rate of sixty four percent. You guess that's highest in baseball so on september fifth. We've got the dodgers and we got the giants on sunday night baseball. So i'm gonna steal all of that from you before a baby san francisco next week on last one. Tell me what you got on the orioles We were celebrating today for taylor. Guys like dramatic any for brandon. Hide this awful. Losing streak is over. I thought really funny note yesterday where you decided over the course of each of the each of the games to to bet against the orioles to win you would've wound up winning the.

"It's like player ex came on this happened player. Y came on this happened. There's gotta be a long list of data to support the starting nine rub exists. Yeah i would think so. That's something see like well. Tell you jared. If i had an intern that would be what they would be doing. Shit like that well shit like that. You're smart intern. What's that no baseball fan baseball fan. I i don't know where that twitter account went but there there was a twitter account called like starting nine data and they were fire. Awesome fucking awesome tweets. That were kind of like what we're talking about right here. Maybe school started or something. Maybe but starting nine data. If you're listening oh no illinois again fuck in state. Trooper gardner may the catch. He thought he got it. Though he was he was pimping and out the box Yeah starting nine data. If you're listening that that's a project for you. Yes something something to earn some some stripes with speaking stripes sally this one or two a year with that brand now. What's that did you keep it in your pants for this for way. No i mean but come on. How old is that a win. Rate seventy two years old. I don't right three next year. Seventy two year old. Adam wainwright is out here. Absolutely carving might pittsburgh pirates. It was not. I mean. I say saint louis cardinals and that was about the fucking smack. You know it's it was tough to watch. It was tough to watch the old dog. Just run circles around the pups because that's what it was. It was the old dog just leaving the pups patent on the porch. And you had. You had no idea this whole junkyard. Dog still had it in and did you hit ya about three four. Six a matic's way out to hit. Cg shut piece. Eighty eight pitches for your bush. He turns forty. He turns forty three weeks from monday three weeks or monday. This dude turns forty and he threw his first complete game shutout since two thousand sixteen and became the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout on eighty eight pitches or fewer since pitches have been counted dude. The first it's the first mattox and again for the folks who might not know a mathematics is a complete game shutout or excuse me complete game thrown in under a hundred pitches and the i mean. That's that's just. It's not easy to do not by any stretch now. And this is the first mattocks by a cardinal. Since chris carpenter back in september. Two thousand eleven. He did it on ninety seven pitches. It's the second fewest pitches you said. Since they began tracking pitches in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight which i did a double take-out. There's no way we just started tracking pitches in nine hundred. Eighty eight pitch counting like something that they're logging for data. That's how antiquated. This game is geared. People think that it's been up to speed. You know man like that's why we talk. That's why we laugh about some of the rules that are still in place. That's why the idea of having unwritten rules is still kind of funny because the idea that the way people would go about their business while it's not logged anywhere actually impact the way guys play the game or you shitting me Like yeah that's that's still very real prevalent. He's the second oldest pitcher behind jamie moyer. What when did jimmy more. It's it was like forty five. Jamie might have been fifty nine years old at retirement. Jimmy employers amy moyer's la oh my god. J. moyer's final major league season was for the colorado rockies in two thousand twelve did not even fucking know that he pitched for the rockies. I remember last with the phillies which which was his second to last season. How old was jamie moyer in his final major league season. Forty six forty nine forty. Nine motherfucker was almost fifty. Nobody in major league baseball a history gave up more homers than jamie moyer five hundred twenty two homers which is right around the same number that miguel cabrera is that in his career. He just hit number four ninety nine man. Say what you want about this move. I know plenty of guys. Hit five hundred on the road. It is what it is some guys. Just wanna get it over with and have as many as they can because you never know but the detroit. Tigers sat miguel cabrera on sunday after. He hit four ninety nine on saturday so that he could wait. No what fucking day is. Today he hit. He hit four ninety nine on tuesday. What fucking day is it. He hit he hit four in ninety nine in the middle game and they sat him for the last game so that they could come back to detroit so that he could. Hopefully brett gardner. Nothing wrong with it. Another wrong with it. Like when they wanna they wanna ricky to break the record at home. Yep i really struggle a day sometimes no no no problem no problem with this being a milestone because it is obviously it's a massive milestone moment for guy who i mean. We we talked about this. Didn't we like miguel in mediolanum marlin tiger. I don't know that there's even really a case at this point to be marlin so obviously if you got the the ability to manipulate this i mean because look for the organization. Someone's going to get that ball. That's going to be a great moment a fan there. The merchandise you're going to be slanging like you know like you want you want it all to be detroit centric so.

It's one of the quickest bills ever. I mean if you're following the nationals or some of these teams the cubs some of these teams that are tearing it up. I mean they decided only three and a half years ago to tear it up. They traded chris sale. They traded jose kintana. Adam eaton and they got back a bounty. They got back eloy minnows. I think he's hit four homers last two games lucas g alito yuan moncada. And they did. They teams like this deserve to be rewarded. 'cause they're player development system produced. It's less than a calendar year ago when this happened when jerry reinsdorf said the one mistake i made in my life was firing tony larussa allowing ken harrelson to fire tony. Larussa and i'm gonna go back and i'm going to get tony larussa for this team even always nine thousand years old. I'm going to get him and people are going to say. He can't relate to the modern player and he's going to have trouble with a dui or something like that and all of this reinsdorf stood by them. It feels like vindication but is the team just so good than anybody could manage it or do you see larussa hand in it you know. Larussa a longtime. Yeah i definitely have hand in it and There's two points to this. One is the manager of the got. Fi- ricky renteria is one of the finest people and i by mistake happened to get to be in the cabals for one of the morning meetings. Every manager has a morning spring training meeting to set the tone for the day and he is not what people think he is funny. He is smart. And i feel bad badly that this worked out this way for him. But you you went and got arguably the greatest manager of all time and tony. I can tell you a million stories about relating to players. You know there. This thought he will not be able to relate. Tony seventy six will not be able to relate to the modern player. Tim anderson is a bath flipper. He's he's a guy that represents the new player when we want players to show their personality and all that that was all bs. Tony has a he. He understands the the buttons you have to push with every player. I mean i can tell you about thi meetings. He had with the cardinals. You know when everybody was hurt in in just the way he wouldn't he knew what to say to every single guy that was his strength and that does not going to change. Because he's seventy something years old. Amy what when. I first got to knowing when he was very young man or your manager. And you would seem around the batting cage. Picking the brains of sparky anderson and and earl weaver. He wanted to understand the game in a lot of the modern game is and you can decry it if you want to the bullpen usage. And all of that came from tony lewis and remember one time. He was in oakland. I was complaining about ricky henderson as a sports former sports writer. You know there's like sometimes you get stiffed or guy makes you wait. Wait way and i'm bitching about tone About ricky henderson to tony. And he looks at me and goes you. Don't get it to the great ones. And he's a great one. The great ones all are a little different. They all have special needs. And it's my job and in a way it would be your job to understand what those are and to help him be the best he can be. The guy is a brilliant psychologist and everything you know. You can't just put a team out there. You have to set a tone everyday and tony sewn is compete compete compete when they clinched the division when the cardinals would clinch the division. He would Say to the guys you have to continue to play at the same level. If you're hurt take time off blah blah blah. One of the great managing jobs. I think the last time they want world series he holds a team meeting like six weeks to go and he shows them the schedule and he writes on the last day of the season chris carpenter and they were out of it by the and they had guys her and he goes Chris is going to pitch this game. One sixty two. And that's gonna be the clinch playoff berth. And it wasn't he. They clinched the day before but they came from nowhere to do it and It was pretty pretty astonishing. I think he's he's the gold standard for every manager. He started managing long before the word analytics came in vocabulary. How has he adjusted. I mean that would have been a reasonable fear that analytics have overwhelmed the particular game and he would be resistant to it. I don't see tony. Laruso says resistant to anything. Honestly because i think he's smart enough to know. Let's take what we can from this thing or that thing or the other thing but i i wonder if you have a sense of him an analytics. Yeah i wondered how he would deal with the avalanche of information. You will go into his office at two thirty in the afternoon and there was tony doing his spray chart where various guys hit the ball Most of the time where you want the defensive guys to play he would be doing. I'd seen there with a ruler and a red felt tip pen drawing cards for each player doing it himself. So i knew that in this modern age where you know where to throw the ball you know to play the defenders because there is a mountain and the challenge for every managers..

"So many years ago that area headed to grommesh ucla. But it seems like longer. Gather ye cy young awards while you may. Things have not been great for him lately. On tuesday he failed to finish the second inning for his second straight outing and he gave up seven runs and was pulled after one and two thirds and the cubs entered wednesday having lost eleven games in a row. It's not looking so great. Were neck and neck with the brewers until very recently and then the brewers won every game and the cubs lost game. Suddenly there's a lot of separation between those teams saves. i'd trading you darvish going with a super soft tossing rotation with maybe not the best idea not that. That's their only issue but this outing by arrietta prompted a couple listener emails about potential. Stop material here. Because ariana allowed a grand slam very very quickly. In this case things went south. Right away so michael wrote in to say in. The top of the first of the tuesday cubs phillies game. Andrew mccutchen hit a grand slam on tenth. Pitch of the top of the first inning. Is that the earliest into a game. A grand slam has been hit. What about anywhere in the game. What's the fewest pitches. A has needed to go from having the bases empty to hitting a grand slam. That can really be a shock to the system. He co from no threat at all. Everything is just in the starting condition to a oh bases loaded to a homerun and suddenly i'm down for runs and this has happened pretty quickly in the past so there is a tweet that i saw. That was tweeted in response to this to buy a mobile insider dinger on twitter. I will link to this but the person behind this account went back to the beginning of pitch data in nineteen eighty eight and found the fastest from the start of a game to the grand slam and the fastest in. That period was eight pitches. So that's the fastest. It was april twenty. Six two thousand jermaine dye hit a grand slam off of ryan. Rupe remember some guys so that was the the fastest that it's been done at the start of a game in the first inning and the person also tweeted that the only time they could find where reliever entered a game and gave up a grand slam on fewer than ten pitches where all the runs belong to. Him was jerrod riggan on july second. Two thousand and two who gave up a grand slam tori peseta after nine pitches but as also curious about any inning. Not just the first. What's the fastest yuko. 'cause of course everything starts with no one on base and ask lucas apostle heiress of baseball prospectus about this and he did some quarrying wizardry with retro sheet and he found that the fastest anyone has gone from beginning of inning. Two grand slam is five pitches. Five pitches june twelfth. Two thousand four the rangers against the cardinals bottom of the fourth inning and the rangers were already ahead three. Nothing at this point. Chris carpenter pitching for the cardinals. He gives up a first pitch single to gary matthews than he gives up a second pitch single to rod barajas than he gives up a first pitch single to michael young and then a first pitch grand slam home run to hank blalock so five from started getting basis empty to ono grand slam. That is almost as fast as you can do it. Yeah so that's pretty bad. And then he settled down rested the ending. Strike out swinging out strikeout looking so just one of those weird things but things Ran off the rails very quickly and it would just. You don't even have time to recover emotionally. Great it's such a strange and sudden shifted fortunes. It's like getting addicted after one pitch and we got another email about this from dave from wrigley he was at this arrietta came and he emailed us from learfield. Couldn't even wait to get home. And he said. I'm at wrigley watching area to pitch in my buddy just leaned over and asked. Was that the fastest grand slam ever. It was ten pitches into the game. But that got me. Wondering what's the fewest pitches that have yielded the most runs in a game and lucas also went above and beyond and he was only able to go back to two thousand as opposed to the nineteen eight pitch tracking error but he looked up the fastest to every increment of runs. So you can obviously score one run with one pitch and you hit a first pitch leadoff homer. That's happened three hundred seventy three times since two thousand but then he looked up okay. What's the fastest two two runs to three runs. The four runs. So i will put this spreadsheet online for anyone who wants to look it up so fastest t two runs. That has happened. Unsurprisingly in two pitches although that's only happened eleven times since two thousand you just have back to back pitch homers and then fast to three runs that takes four pitches. That has happened three times. Fast of four runs. That's happened in six pitches. Fastest five runs. Eleven pitches fastest. A six runs thirteen pitches fastest. Two seven runs nineteen pitches. This is all still in the first inning here. Fastest two eight runs. Twenty-five pitches fastest two nine runs thirty pitches. Also i the fastest ten runs. Thirty seven pitches also Fastest to eleven runs thirty nine pitches. Also i that's that's the last one that it has happened in the first inning. And this was jason jennings made a start on july twenty ninth two thousand seven. This was padres against astros. This is a this is a real nightmare outing. It's i was gonna ask you. Is this all the same person. And if you're the manager at what point in that score progression decide he just wearing it. Yup this is all poor. Jason jennings who was jason. Yeah pulled after two outs. But also after eleven runs services. Top of the i saw padres batting against the s jason jennings bryan tiles walks..

"At that point. He was ready the following week. Anyway and he's gonna start on saturday. Anthony k at this point or tomorrow whichever is turned so. I just don't understand why you do that. Case had his struggles so far this year. They're letting him work through it. I know he's not as highly touted but man pearson is supposed to be your guy. Moving forward is supposed to be the anchor of this rotation. Let him work through it. Because we've seen the glimpses as you said with chris carpenter crag there's been glimpses of pearson in the past even last year in twenty twenty before he got hurt and when he came back he has all the stuff. I just don't know what is these. Seem to come out of nowhere when it's at the big league level i don't understand will also i if if you remember. I mean you just talked about q. Separate pitchers rate in the within the blue jays organization at one time being carpenter and roy halladay and i feel like those are anomalies right. Those are anomalies of highly touted prospects at the time that were sent back down to work on mechanical issues that ended up being successful of one of which not in the blue jays organization But when it comes to players like ricky romero there was a bunch of yo-yoing and there was a bunch of tweaking with mechanics until at one point in buffalo. You is like fuck it. I'm just gonna do what i wanna do right. And it ruined him. He didn't even find success in san francisco. It just ruined him. Same thing with aaron sanchez ruined him. Think about what they do with john san francisco to ironically think about what they do with stroman nothing. They did nothing which roman he came up. And that was it. You're here you're up and An acl injury derailed him but he still came back and had obviously had to go through the system and in order to get his legs underneath them no pun intended but there was no sent up and down. Despite attitude issues there was no sending up and down. He remained a big league starter. Any still finding success today right. And so that's what you sort of just got to let them work through it you. They're going to be bad at outings. Fuck they gave tanner roark. How many bad outings before they d. If them like you can't do. This would nate pearson. Why because he's fragile. I hate this. I hate the fragility aspect of. Oh we call our particular prospects..

"Have the amount of innings and have had the amount of postseason innings that he had aged twenty one and twenty two in two thousand thirteen and twenty fourteen. I think we take that for granted. And i think we take for granted. Just how good he is. Just how good stuff is and not only. Will you know his options. Next two years. I think end up looking potentially huge bargains. If carlos stays healthy and continues to pitch the way that he's pitched. But i also think that maybe we'll say it's a bit of a blessing in disguise that he was in the bullpen for a couple of years with the shoulder and not only did he over the last years at least right now it looks like build the shoulder backup and not only. Did the cardinals do it. I think in a prudent way You got him in some different situations. He learned to succeed in different situations. But you didn't risk a career altering injury or a procedure that could alter the trajectory of the career. And i think that's really really important. It would have been easy for carlos for the club or for anyone may be to not handle things the way they were handled. Because it's frustrating. Right you see a guy with with cy young caliber stuff. You see when it's right. He's among the best in baseball terms of just the pure stuff that he has so yeah it would have been easy. I think to or attempting at least tempting to try to push through a little bit but just look at how young guys still is. And how he's matured. I think his stuff is matured. I think the different situations that thrived in over the past handful of years is indicative of how he's matured as a pitcher of how much grown as a pitcher and everyone has to grow as a pitcher right like adam wainwright continues to grow as a pitcher. I'm sure chris carpenter would tell you that. He grew as a pitcher from toronto to saint. Louis like everyone has to grow and has to evolve because your body changes the game changes. You're not at age. Twenty five twenty six twenty seven were at age twenty one not saying for better for worse. You're not at age thirty. You were at age twenty five and certainly what you were at age twenty one. That's part of the game. That's part of baseball. that's part of just growing. That's part of over the human body so again. just look at look at the body of work. Look at the numbers. And please appreciate what carlos martinez has done. Because i think what. He's done is unbelievably impressive. It continues to be unbelievably impressive. And until you step back and sometimes we're not good at this in the heat of the moment we're not good at stepping back and taking in the entire body of work right.

"And for how long. He's been around like to think that chris carpenter did not even arrive in saint louis until his age. Twenty nine season in two thousand and four is crazy. People get too frustrated with carlos martinez for what he's given the cardinals guy's got a three point five career era and he's made what fifty two million. He's been a bargain. A big time bargain and i get. It can be frustrating. Sometimes watching him pitch because early on in his career the middle part of his career. Maybe this is the middle part of his career by the way like you look at just later max scherzer mixtures or wasn't good until his late twenties so i could totally see carlos martinez having a big time. Second chapter. where maybe you look at someone like lucas giolito Who loses some velocity like. You're a big time prospects. You know you're the talk of the town and then you have an injury lose velocity. You've got to figure out how to pitch you gotta figure out how to tweak your arsenal and you know maybe take on a little adam wainwright where you're more cerebral than talent and you're switching up your arm angles and you're switching up your timing. And maybe that can click for him where he's not you know. The guy that hits ninety eight regularly but he's a- the the movement on his pitches and still incredible and he can still touch ninety five ninety six and i know that there's been you know a a movement and movement analytically To move away from the two seamer sinker right like maybe he becomes the guy who relies a little bit more on efficiency and you know keeping the ball down. And he's not you know maybe striking out eight or nine per nine innings. But he's also going deeper into games because you're right. He's being more efficient and he'll never get to like. I'm not saying he's going to be like kyle hendricks but He also doesn't need to be You know living living in the upper nineties or going from two to three two so you know. There's there's something there he's he's got a good case. Study in adam wainwright a guy. Who's you know. Certainly evolved over the course of his career multiple times. So i'm excited man. We do need to work in the su- nami warning though that he ran into the bullpen with iran in from the bullpen. Width the last couple of years..

"Oh you know you. Just look at the numbers. Know the ninth inning. The same as as the the fifth inning. But you know it's it's not These humans not machine what men not machines that was like tony larussa quote for a long time. But not i mean. I'm excited that. Alex races healthy and he his stuff. Is you know as good as it was when he was a big time prospect and if he can just continue to work on the command he can be an asset this year in the bullpen and ben heck finesse at going into next year and they still have them under control through two thousand twenty three. I believe That didn't he just he just signed his first arbitration eligible deal. Yeah i mean if if it wasn't for that first year in two thousand sixteen. When he came up and was healthy through forty six innings he would still qualify for rookie of the year considerations. Because he'd have been because he'd only have like thirty seven innings or he he he would've twenty seven innings going into this year. Well the two guys that won rookie of the year last year. technically qualified. They're not allowed to win it. Two years in a row but randy arose arena qualifies rookie of the year. It's it's just a weird year with with the pandemic in there but yet back to carlos martinez been. I felt even coming into this season. I felt like people were discounting him a bit. Like you're you're really going to challenge his ability based on twenty innings in two thousand and twenty amid a by a pandemic and he had kobe the hospital. I believe a few times for it. The guy had of an er a point three six in the first eight years of his career. Strikeouts are down this year. Which is kinda strange and of loss is down. It's actually from where it was last year. So that's purging. He moves further and further away from that shoulder issue. But you're right. The best case scenario for carlos is just to be a guy that can get innings every night and i would take that allows two runs a night if there's a blow up here and there there's a jamir in there that that's what you want is consistent starting pitching from him because it seems like every week. We talk chris. We talk about how worried. At least the first three weeks of the season we talked about how we were about that starting rotation not being able to work late into games which taxes the bullpen men if you can script bullpen out and you know. Have gaga's radius hicks helmsley tyler web. Emend they're all fresh. Then you feel like you. Can you know if you take a lead early in the game. You're going to close it out. And you know to have carlos being able to like pitch into eighth inning. Or was he pitching today. Yeah he pitched into the eighth scott yanked with one out in the eighth. It's it's crazy. He's twenty nine. You won't turn thirty until the end of september and just for context standpoint. adam wainwright's age twenty nine season. He missed it was two thousand eleven when he had tommy john right so great great years before that but chris carpenter his first year with the cardinals he was twenty nine years old two thousand four his first year with the cardinals before that he was a five hundred pitcher with a yar around five in in toronto and had never made an all star team. Like i'm not comparing. I know it's apples and oranges max. Scherzer had his breakout your at age twenty eight. I'm just saying like we take for granted. How young he is dude..

"Really spin it. And i can see him. Hey i changes delivery a little bit. Get him to stride more towards the plate and then he might. Command is fast ball better in that. You may get one story from the scouting side. It's different from the story that the numbers tell this is even more true the farther they are from the majors the more that you want to try to tell that story and say this is what the player is now. Yeah but this is what the player also could be. Because we're talking about. I only see players going down high school. You may talk to other guys in the industry if you ever talked to a scout on the international side. They're watching kids as young as thirteen. Down the dominican republic and venezuela panama and. I can't even imagine how to start that evaluation. That's that's crazy. I am so when i lived in saint louis. I had good friend. Chris carpenter a veena pitcher for the cardinals shirt. So christmas rehabbing and we throw all the time. I was retired at this point. Right okay row. And he couldn't throw a football saved his life but he was very different things. People don't get that baseball doesn't mean throw eventually got him throw spiral so it was good but it's not like i can throw a football pretty hard right. I throw a mean. That was a gift i was given. I throw ball pretty hard and erin thrown with a major league pitcher. And i'm like we're throw he's rehabbing and were throwing one hundred yards apart..

"Tell them you heard about them. From chris and ben talking cardinals baseball. What's up man. How does it feel to be back in the building With not full capacity crowd but nine thousand probably felt like one hundred thousand for everybody involved yesterday. How it really did chris. It was great to see people enjoying baseball. We talked a little bit last week about. Just how. I never want to hear that stake. Soundtrack of fake crowd noise again So a tip my cap to thirteen thousand plus who showed up for the game. It wasn't it wasn't it wasn't full and it wasn't that traditional opening opening roar but they they pound for pound. They were a hell of a crowd. And you know it was an emotional day in in so many ways of the ballpark between the the tributes to lou brock and bob gibson the welcome of of no one are and otto who of course rose to the occasion as in the eighth inning. What a what. A surreal Hit home run. That was in moment for for him. The first of many. I imagine bill have here but also the return of course in law and there's a lot of storyline going on at the ballpark. It was cool to see most importantly fans back there to experience because it's not cardinals baseball without arnold fans in the seats and they They got a heck of a game and they got a heck of a player. Nolan are not. That was my take away from the gay man. There are some guys that we've seen come through saint louis who who who kinda get by with the stage there some guys who don't handle it well kind of shrink from it. There's there's a few guys in the cardinals have a couple of them. Adam wainwright india molina. They're few guys who thrive on it who relish. That are not gonna figgy throw carpenter. And they're right. Chris carpenter sure but he he enjoys this in the loves. He loves being the guy in the moment and he's not always gonna hit the game winning home run he's always going to make the job-dumping play but he's going to a lot times in egypt really seems to he wants to soak in the moment. And what better place to play for for for a guy like that in saint louis. It's gonna be a pretty good relationship. But i think we roll our eyes. Some when we hear some of the cliches but does he really does seem to be literally like literally all he cares about seems to be baseball. And to the point. That you know wainwright kinda let it slip. Mentioned that he was sending like highlights of himself almost like a high school player. Trying to catch the attention of college coaches and saying like show these mo- like it's just the legend of him keeps growing. He wore like what. I wear on a sunday on my couch. Like to the ballpark yesterday. Like just like key literally. I think just cares about baseball and wants to win and I think for cardinals fans..
