The US and Guns: Can Anything Change?

"To the foreign desk. I'm andrew mullah. My guest today. Are chris brown and robert spitzer chris. Brown is president of the gun. Control lobby group brady. She joins us from arlington virginia. Robert spitzer is distinguished service professor of political science at the state university of new york and the author of several books on gun. Control an eighth edition of his book. The politics of gun control was published last year. He joins us from portland. New york chris. I'll ask you first the big question then. We will look at a series of smaller questions when you think of the problem of america and guns. How actually solvable is because by most best guesses. There's about four hundred million guns that large in the united states. You're not going to get all of them. So with the best will in the world and with all the political capital you might want what kind of impact could realistically be made. Nearly one hundred percent actually and takes is really the political will to has some pretty basic laws. That ninety percent of americans agree with literally from last to expand the brady background check system to continue the momentum that we have in the states around certain issues but also recognizing that we have an epidemic in the united states. Right determined five times more likely to get shot in the united states than any other industrialized country in this earth. And we have to understand if we're going to fix it. The different components of what leads to forty thousand people a year being shot and killed and nearly eighty thousand additional individuals being shot and surviving those injuries part of that is homicide hearted that is unintentional injury of kids in their home with guns a very small fraction our our definition of mass shooting and two-thirds are suicide

What It Means When Children Are Under Fire

"We have a full house today though. Chris ted and john can you introduce yourself. Hi everyone. i'm chris brown. I'm the president of brady and hi everybody. My name is ted bonar. I'm a clinical psychologist and the director of an family fire and then sort of our man of the hour. Is it strange when you walk into a virtual meeting space and everyone just holds your book up with notes and says okay. Let's get started on delighted. Delighted actually see it in the world. I've been living with it for the weird thing about a book. You know you finish it so long ago and then you wait and you wait and you wait and then suddenly you actually see it out there so now it's it's always a thrill to see waved around admit meetings okay. That's that's a relief. I'm glad we didn't scare you. John and would you mind telling your listeners. A little bit about yourself as well as your great buck children under fire. Sure my name is john. Woodrow cox. I'm a staff writer at the washington post. And i'm the author of children under fire in american crisis. The sort of the short summary of the book is it's meant to be really an intimate account of the way that gun. Violence devastates this country and anna anna. Also a bit of a path forward in ways that we could make some small differences to help those kids both before and after they suffer trauma from gun wiles. I think intimate is a perfect word to describe this book as you detail. The ways in which children are impacted by gun violence through stories of a handful of children. What i'm wondering is what prompted you to write. Not just about the physical effects of gun violence in what that effect is on children but the psychological ex i think that so much of the coverage around the way that kids are impacted by gun. Violence focuses on the kids who get shot. We have such a narrow focus. And this really applies. I think to adults as well. There's this really narrow focus on and that's the headlines. I mean we can look at what happened yesterday. As an example. There's a school shooting all the cable news. Networks make a calculation to say. Let's wait and see how many people died right. One person died they move on. That's not an high enough death

Yeah while i am very excited to talk. Today's gas Unfortunately also not in person who wants upon a time. I actually got to do a four hour in person interview it if you can imagine a time where such a thing was actually physically possible. If i try really hard. I think i can but it is pretty unmasked more right now right. It feels like a completely different life but luckily at least digitally we get to talk with colin goddard christian heine chris brown and stephanie abrams. All of whom are these great gun. Violence prevention advocates and in particular colin christian and stephan have something in common but i think our listeners may not expect. And you're not gonna tell us. I am absolutely not gonna tell you they have to listen. How dare i jerk. Yes we're going to their butt together. Just some hands were discussing the passage of hr eight and fourteen forty six in the us house of representatives. And we're gonna tackle questions like what are these bills. What do they do. And what is even the point of a background check anyway. Yeah and i know. Some of our listeners are with from day one and so they may be like. Oh i totally know about all these bills and background checks which is awesome. But i think with this episode even if you know all the background checks needs bills it's still going to be really eliminating compensation so definitely station. Hi everyone on. Chris brown on the president's of brady. Hey everyone my name. is stephanie. Abrams i am the executive council member of team enough as well as a a worker debris offices the team fellow when i'm also the national chapter coordinator years well so i wear a lot hats team enough but i love the voice of the youth and i think it's very important especially right now under current political climate ear. I'm christian heine vice-president policy your brady and then call in our loan on brady person on this podcast but you. You were once brady. He's brady at heart. You can say. I know once your winter you're never out island is calling goddard. I'm a survivor. Two thousand seven shootings. Virginia tech former team brady member and a gun of prevention advocate. Thank you so much for all. You've done any work. Amazing job now to and water access right so it's cool really cool job. I feel like in a lot of ways. Similar to engaging a constituency in america that feels like. They've been ignored that their voices aren't being heard. And you know working alongside them to fight to make change. So it's in a of ways very similar to the work at brady and take a lot of the learnings and experiences in carrying it forward and look at the whole workout station in there. Is that a peleton. You gotta pelivan peleton brutal used a mirror now mayor much come see me. I got the. Let's get peleton. Let's go man. You're you're peddling these things. Let's all right. You're peleton pusher and it's concerning ballots today so. Let's talking about biking talking about bills. Chris just to start us off. Can you even break down at a very basic level would brady background. Check is sure so the radi background check system was put into effect about twenty seven years ago and a few days and change and when it was i adopted it was in response to actually the nineteen sixty eight gun control act which required background checks to be conducted so this is something that already was part of the federal law that there is no mechanism to ensure that there was real recordkeeping or even technology to make sure that could happen in the brady law. Put into effect this apparatus or sought to to ensure that every federally licensed firearms dealer or f. f. l. was required by law to conduct a background check and use technology that was adopted by the government to conduct that check and not just requires a look at a database that includes records criminal history at cetera about prohibited

Rihanna says she still loves Chris Brown, have 'a very close friendship'

"Today Daily Property Yana reveals she still loves Chris. Brown. Well, at least she did back in two thousand twelve oprah just reposted an interview to her super soul conversations podcast Arianna Open Dabbagh. Chris and whether she could forgive him, here's what she said. We've been working on our friendship began. Now we're very, very close friends. With built a trust again unless it like we love each other and probably always will an. Anything that we're going to try to team not something you can shut off if you've ever been in love You're seeing each other again. He's in a relationship of his own. I'm single. Do you think Chris Brown is a true love for you? Absolutely. I think he was the love of my life. He was the first love. And I see that he loved me the same way. A lot of people thought that it was unforgivable. Have you forgiven him? I have forgiven him. Wow. So this was a very serious and shocking interview. Do you think Riana still feels this way again, hundred mine the audience this isn't old interview that just got reposted. Here's the thing. And I said this in two, thousand twelve and I'm GonNa say it again in twenty twenty. For Riana I, feel like she never really got the closure she deserved in this situation. And anytime, there is three hundred and fifty million people influencing your decision you are going to go with what you think people want to see. So I truly believe had those photos not come out had we all known it? She probably would have went back into that relationship and then realized that it wasn't for her and then left but she never got that chance because everybody was in the business again I would not have told her to go back but I know some people do. And I know that's why a lot of relationships lingers because people never get that closure people feel like they never ever got that chance to say, Hey, I'm done I've grown out of this and I can't be a part of this. It's almost like she feels forced out of the relationship based on other people's opinions and everybody weighing in you know word on the street and this is super inside information. This I'm not even sure if this is correct, but there has been talks for years that this is obvious and it might have even been printed. So I don't know if I'm like dropping a bomb, but they've gotten into several altercations, physical altercations in the past where they were both. Physical towards each other right exact. Anyway. So there was a lot of speculation about that behind the scenes, kind of more under the radar for years that had been going on between them. Unfortunately, this incident did catch wind of the media and the public, and there were the photos that were leaked, which were absolutely horrific should have never happened so I do feel like you know that altercation happened when she was very much in love with somebody things got very out of hand and they were not okay H. and never get to that point. But then the entire world jumped in and was like you cannot love this man you need to leave. It was like, Whoa Whoa WHOA WHOA WHOA so it's kind of like one. J. Lo had to leave diddy when that whole court case was going on you know what I mean. It was just not good for her image she had to separate herself. So I feel like this does not surprise me at all that her feelings still linger. Of course, it was her first love they were like you feel that magnetic chemistry between them and then do you remember she did this interview and then she pop back up I was doing daily pop has more in the beginning and they had the the photo of them are in front of the car. You know what I'm talking about I was trying to forget that right now. I was trying to prevent it. They kindled for periods of time. Don't forget the birthday cake remix to when she came out with the song everybody say yes and then the remix came and it was him on the remix and she didn't want anybody. So it was like Oh. Maybe they're getting back together. Yeah Ain't nobody's business you remember that song. I know I it's such a complicated relationship with the pan. The band ain't got pulled off before she was ready to process it as remember in this interview, she goes on to talk about how it was. Really. took her long time to really realize where where she falls in like what love is supposed to look like because of her relationship with her father and she openly talked about how her father was used to her mother and so those when you grow up in that kind of situation, it's deeper than just. It's it's learning what love's supposed to look like learning love is and she was very young when this happened and as you guys said, it just took time to process all that I. Don't think that Riana still wants to be with Chris Brown in any way that ship has sailed I just think then there's like this love of while we never got to end it how we wanted to I never got that closure. It took me years to process how I even felt in that moment. I decided. No I feel like she wants to go back I feel like she wants to do it again but she knows that people are going to talk so much smack about her. If she goes back down people get week we're that bag I can't believe she did it I'm telling you. About. Why Since then I don't think. So yeah, why do you think the real quick Oprah's been reposting some of our old interviews, but she did not put a disclaimer like this is old this is from two thousand twelve. Do you think is kind of annoyed that this came out again? I don't think so I think when you go on Oprah, it's never easy conversation I. mean you had cookie Johnson talking about her husband's HIV status. You've had Whitney talked about her drug addictions Whitney Mother's talking about Sexuality Oprah is the place where you're going to go and have that hard conversation and once you say it, it's GonNa live on forever. So no, it's old t for sure but it's Oprah's status bill she pave.

'Tenderfoot TV co-founder Donald Albright on the podcasting's bright (but consolidated) future

"Hello. Welcome to the day punk ass I'm Laura Riley did today's senior correspondent coming to the end of my stint killing neo regular host Brian Mercy. So on today's show, I'm very excited to g she Donald Albright Donald Founder I'm president of. TV, which is an Atlanta based production studio is hidden costs. Vanished. Monster Linden in La. Many money. Combined the has reached more than five hundred, million dollars to date and TV as they would suggest is increasingly inking deals beyond podcasting, TV and even recently striking deal. So don't welcome to the. Past. Thank you for having me. Let Veer. And Eighty joining us from Atlanta today as you've been hung down. Yes I am I've been here for. How long has it been now? Feels like this. Browse data. Yeah. Monday or Saturday I can't tell but yeah. I mean Atlanta from California originally but. Moved here to Atlanta. After after I should go into college and then I love the city. Yes I was going to ask you she's a what brought you to Atlanta. I know your your background was in music permission an are. Yeah. Yes. So I'm from the Bay Area San Jose California my mom actually moved to Atlanta when I was in high school So I went to thousand state after graduating high school for about a year and a half, and then at certain point came to visit my mom and a friend of mine his older brother was going to Clark Atlanta University a historically black college. I went to the campus. Saw Beautiful Campus I saw beautiful women and I said I have to go here one day. So I transferred transferring from Saudi state to Clark Atlanta and the you know had half my family was already here so. Ended up staying and just building. Building out my business here, and it'll be started started in music industry in Atlanta. And in that time, he builds up a pretty enviable client list to have to say like Jay z outcast, can you take back to that time? What what can have brought e to setting? Is It D. Day and statements and some of the this the standout moments from that time. Yeah I mean so many it's been twenty years It all happened very much like podcasting kind of by accident I've always been into our entrepreneur started my first company when I was about eighteen years old shirt COMP design company Printing Company which I learned from Tom, this profit organization that I was working with. So I was always been business-minded my my dad his own construction company or has own construction company. So I've always seen him write his own business as well and. When I got to Atlanta. We just for in this music scene that was very Coming up like yet outcasts yet goodie mob TLC, usher and we kind of just. Went to this party and met a few people start networking a few business cards and decided, hey, we should just. Hang out with these people and start to promote and pass out flyers in. Other the company actually started because we were losing money I was the only one with a car. So it was causing gas money to go from point eight point be so I said, hey guys, we've got a pool our money together to share in these losses in eventually someone said, hey, how much you guys charge to put up those posters and we got to come up with a number that's count started the business but it evolved from there obviously from running a promotions company out of the Dorm Room Clark Atlanta to. You know taking artists like masterpiece in Yeah Jay Z. His. In promoting concerts in the going on the road with artists like outkast and Goodie mob and that evolved into management. An are in the and the names started getting bigger and bigger and not just the names bigger. But my relationship with the artists at first, you're a little bit. Distanced from the creative process, you're only on the promotions and marketing side. That I became more involved in the creation of albums, the management of talent stuff like that. So it was it's been great I mean I've traveled the world three times artists toured you know Africa with Chris Brown in the US with With usher festivals all over the world. So I there's so many standout said it's fun to talk about it because I forget a lot of them but the it's like having two different two different careers in two different lives. Almost you know I'm really interested in how you and your kind of tie founder at tend to fit came to mate. So you okay founder is pain Lindsey, and in a prior life he was in this hybrid even describe them. But like rap rock bands cooled rights here the tree. So interested in night walk forces combined that the you T to mate and and start working together. Is another interesting story so we I I didn't know who pain was, but I knew who the band was right his right side of the tree and he. Yeah the music was so and it's all. It's all about like how you introduced to something. It really has a big impact of what you initially feel about it. So I was managing an artist's name. Lloyd, who was on what he was on Atlantic or universal at the time. But big RB artists that Atlanta and he had producer that pain in his the rest of his band and they ended up collaborating in doing a song. So pain had a song with a very popular Atlanta artist. So new the band from from that perspective and like the music and then. Probably three years later or more actually probably the five years later I got an. Email from a guy named pain Lindsay I'm I've moved on in my career and I'm managing a new artist on on the verge of breaking through and I get an email from pain saying, Hey, I'm money's pain Lindsey A mutated director and I love the shoot a video for your artist and. I didn't know who he didn't recognize the name but a friend of mine who having dinner with me at the time I read the email and he said Oh that's pain from rice out of the tree I said okay. Well, maybe I'll give this guy a shot because before I wasn't sure if you we already have people to do our videos, but because of that connection already knew who he was like. Okay that's that's cool. There's. You know there's tried out. So we shot one video for a couple thousand dollars turn out to be great. He was able to I wasn't quite sure like how good he would be. So I kind of was forcing my creative ideas on him but any and you made them come out great and then we did that times and then I said man, this guy's good I should probably just let him run with the creative ideas and have him bring the video back with his full vision and when he did that the biggest got even better. So I just knew like we have a really good working relationship being able to hear each other right and being able to collaborate creatively and in respecting each other from creative and business standpoint. So. It was like the foundation of US later becoming business partners

Jon M. Chu - how the internet changed visibility for Asian Americans

"And if you could ever like yourself as the subject of a story it's like it almost takes a work of imagination to like you know. See that who you are can. Yes object store. I mean I basically grew up in. I think that's part of both my power and my weakness is like. I grew up in an environment in the Silicon Valley in the eighties and the nineties. And so I know that perspective because I grew up in the perspective of like Oh are Asians the other when you're surrounded by it. You are indoctrinated it and so you know what they're thinking and I grew up in a Chinese restaurant as well. So the fears of what people think of you are completely intertwined in your brain and in your heart. I think the Internet changed so much because when I watched youtube video and for instance and dance like I saw how fast the perspective of what Asians are as dancers in the dance world. When I started Asians were known as amazing hip hop dancers. But when I went to those tournaments and these these these conferences whereas they're six thousand Asia American dancers and their amazing hip hop dancers. And that's where they Kaba. Modern was job. Jabotinsky was there. Were all these amazing answers. And the world didn't know about it and in the span of like four or five years everybody knew about it and suddenly it's like. Oh Asians condense. When did you start going to these dance and I went? Let's see my cousin was going to San Diego State. And so she'd be like you have to come see this because you like dance and this is incredible and so. I want to say it was like two thousand six two thousand five. The collaboration or which dance competition was this They Will Aberration Star. Collaboration collaboration but there's also other ones but data for the first time. And that's when I did step up to I was like when I was creating sabotage like crews because I've seen these crews And Job Lock is like the. All Star like they weren't there was no ABC. At the time there was no nobody knew them they had never been filmed before so we got them very very early. But witnessing the shift of people seeing agents dancers and stink. Oh there can be the best. When you see these Korean dancers in those Uniqlo ads or in missy Elliott videos like it changed and I could see how fast that oh it just takes an example. I love that you have always seemed to love dance and music and sort of gravitated towards those areas in your work. Obviously I remember. I went to the set of your web series. You're super can't series the St shooting like a showdown seen in the town true we had. They're kicking us out in fifteen minutes so he just shoot like our whole last episode at fifteen minutes. It was insane. I was I was there. It was pretty great. And you really between that project and the step up movies and the Adam Chu dance crew. Which I'm GonNa make you explain to turn around and the Internet back then but you really seem to to be able to lean into these interests of yours but at the same time create company of talent like Harry Shum Junior. Got So many greats spotlights through your works with him and so many other dancers got on my rematch. Cast Nets smarr. All that stuff was crazy. It was crazy times. How did that like what? What kind of role did that project? First of all. How do you describe it now? Looking back I mean we were early and Youtube. There's two thousand seven two thousand eight. Maybe I don't know maybe two thousand eight nine somewhere around there and basically we had done step up to and Miley Cyrus had watched the movie and so she called our fourteen year old star of that movie atoms. Vanni who played Moose in the movie and left a message. He didn't answer he she him as I loved you in that movie congrats and didn't leave a number and so she's like fifteen or sixteen and he's fourteen. He calls me like. Oh my Gosh Miley Cyrus just called me. Can you get me her number? I'm like a I don't know how to get her now to call her age. He's like Yeah Asia. No I'm not going to do that but she was already had a youtube channel and we had already were thinking. Hey we should do some videos on youtube thing and so I was like she has her best friend. Mandy. Who's a dancer like? Let's challenge them to a dance battle and just challenger and maybe she'll answer because she knows who you are so we got our crew together and made this crazy video challenging her to a dance battle and two days later she answered and she had the biggest youtube channel at the time This is at the height of her sort of power. And when she answered us She got all her celebrity. Friends made it like music video and got included channing. Tatum and Jenna Dewan in their video. Which is kind of a slap in the face to us. We'll man dance battling real though we should. We should resolve more things. Thought those this was west side story digital like this real shit and people online like really got into it. People who hated Miley could be on our side and then people who love it could be on her side and we made another video. After and we pulled out our Rolodex we got like Sandler Lindsay Lohan. We got Chris Brown before the incidence of Diana. Ross Amanda bines before here incidents. We've got a lot of people. And then we got a huge amount of his we've got millions and millions of hits and at that time it was big and so then she answered again with like helicopters and Ryan secret and all these people about this whole thing which I remember it being just so huge but it's kind of an example of growing an Internet age community in a way very very like demonstrably has power. I mean you've also worked with Justin bieber twice and saw how how strong his phantom is. So it's kind of cool to see the Asian American community rally around Craze Rich Asians and that came out not that at all at all related to one another safe. You know all these I mean they are little bit though. That's that's what I wanted to ask about his Asian American dance crews and southern California's. Such a thing you know I went to Ucla. Watch them and it's so cool to kind of hear you talk about how. Yeah Yeah I mean I you know. And Jabber walkies like weren't they on like America's best dance crew or something like that but that was that was when like the world got to know them but before that they were in ACDC dance crew before they were actually as during while they were on there. They were in step up before they were ever On match you put you put the Jabber walkies on the map that you represented elsewhere. We film them for those for sure. I had already made my first studio movie and yet I still felt like when I would watch youtube. This is like energy and I reminded myself that. I didn't have to ask permission for anything like I could have a camera. I know how to edit and I ended all the. Are you to battle videos? I didn't have to answer to anybody. And that's an amazing confidence builder and powerful thing to know that you have at your fingertips and you can have millions of people watching it tomorrow. Not next week. When a marketing company goes not with the press release like just releasing it. There was a big lesson to me during that time knowing that I have no excuses not to make stuff at any moment that I wanna make
