"It up. Touchdown. Jamar chase. Late in the fourth quarter, Joe burrow throws a 6 yard pass to Jamar chase to tie the game at 20 and out hustles Mitchell Wilcox, the backup tight end for the first field goal or extra point snap of his NFL career. We have a different long snap for correct ion. Yes, bicep injury for Clark Harris, so Mitchell Wilcox has come in to snap it. Wilcox a backup tight end. This is not the time you want your backup to snap for running out there. But he can be a hero today. You know, two seconds left, 2020, season opener on the line. The first snap his career understandably was a little slow. What a turn of events. A slow snap and the whole operation. Took too long. So that sent the game to overtime and in overtime, Wilcox got a chance to redeem himself, but this time his snap flies a little bit high and that led to my hasty hold and then Evan McPherson, misses 29 yard field goal attempt to potentially win the game. We missed it badly. Once again, the snap was high. And everything was thrown off. The steelers ended up winning on a Chris Boswell field goal, with time expiring and overtime, take home a 23 to 20 win. And the steelers outlast the Bengals. And fittingly it ends on a kick. This did, to a lot of long snappers around the league, epitomize why they are so valuable that even though they are this class of all forgotten about players, you do really notice them when they're not there. Being a long snapper in the NFL is one of the stranger jobs in all of sports. You spend your time hunched over, trying to throw perfect spirals backwards and between your legs and high pressure situations, and no one really knows about you or cares about you unless something goes terribly horribly wrong. Today, Sports Illustrated's Alex Pruitt takes us into the upside down world of NFL long snappers, a world filled with quirky perfectionists, a whole lot of downtime, and a quest to get the respect they feel they deserve. You can't put the foot in football without a long snapper. I mean, you literally, it has to start with a long or a deep snap. So these guys are as instrumental to actually making the operation go as anybody. From wondering, I'm under skeletal. It's Friday, December 2nd, and this is the lead. So Alex, I guess I have a very simple first question, which is, how in the world did you get interested in learning and writing about long snappers? Yeah, I suppose it says a heck of a lot about me that I chose to write a story about something that fans never ever think about. But this for me is how I've used sports sometimes. If you go click on my author page, you'll find every so often. Maybe about once a year, I do a deep dive into some random topic. Mostly just because it amuses me. A couple of years ago, it was about the chain gangs, the people who hop up up the chains onto the field for every essentially performative television measurement. Last year it was about pylons. And this year I got thinking about the class of people in the NFL whose sole job it is to bend over and fling the ball between their legs on average about 8 times a game. And it struck me as a potentially rich vein for some narrative threats to pull out. I love it. You've carved out your own NFL beat, it sounds like at this point. Yeah, weirdness. I guess. All right, well, let's get into some of that weirdness. I want to start with the rather unusual lifestyles of long snappers. Tell us what these guys lives are like relative to other NFL players on a day to today basis. JJ Janssen, the panther snapper I talked to described the life as 5% white knuckle time and 95% relaxed and chill. That's one thing you'll hear is there's a lot of downtime as a long snapper. At least as a punter and a kicker you get to kick from different distances and try different things and as a snapper, you got to do the same thing over and over and over again and when you're not doing that, you're not doing much anything. Everybody's stressed, it's important to have something outside of snapping and at work for guys that could be playing table tennis, goofing off in the locker room, but also being a resource for players, a sounding board. Some guys said, you know, it maybe a decade or so ago, they would be allowed to hop into other drills, maybe join the linebackers for some tackling or hold the pads or something like that or load the jugs machine, but now it's a little more just do your job. It seems like because you do have a lot to work on as far as like punk coverage and blocking and just, again, just getting wraps of practice as well. Talk a little more about those reps at practice. You know, long snapping seems like this really simple task, but in reading your story, Alex, I got the sense that there's actually a bit more to it than many people might realize. So tell us about the actual mechanics that these guys are working on and how they go about perfecting their technique. The ideal scenario is to have two and a half rotations of the football, anything under 1.3 seconds from the snap to the kick. For punts, there's a little more variation or a little more, I guess, wiggle room. If you look across the league, you'll find a wide range of grips, stances, deliveries, guys essentially likened it to throwing a football because that's at its core what it is. You have to be able to deliver a spiral, but you just have to do it upside down. So you see a lot of guys who played quarterback in high school, they transitioned and a lot of guys have a similar origin story where one day a coach asks who wants to try snapping a ball. We're looking for a long stamper who wants to try it. Maybe it's some guys who are looking for a little more playing time, but often it's guys who know how to throw a football understand how to throw a spiral and can replicate that at a weird angle. So just like you look across the league at quarterbacks and I'm sure you'll find a wide range of guys grips and how they hold the ball and how they deliver the ball so too is their variety at the snapper position. And were there any, I don't know, unusual drills that you heard about these guys doing

"Crazy afternoon of football went the Steelers way as they escaped Cincinnati with a 23 20 overtime win Chris Boswell missed a field goal in the extra session but got another opportunity and made good on a 53 yarder as time expired It's just a matter if I get a no shot most of the time in that situation You missed the first one You don't get another one And just fortunate enough that the team let us right back down and we got another one and it went in Down 17 6 at the half the Bengals rallied to tie the score at 20 on a 6 yard pass from Joe burrow to Jamar chase with two seconds left in regulation but Evan McPherson's attempt at a game winning PAT was blocked which brought on overtime McPherson also missed a field goal in OT I'm Bruce Morton

"Buckner was really the only guy that was able to get some semblance of pressure on Mac Jones. Not a lot of pressure created from that unit. But yeah, I think you definitely give props to Darius Leonard. He's been an absolute turnover machine. And I think that's kind of the reason we did see some money late on New England. There was a couple number grabbers that do have some respect, and then you had 65% of the tickets, which I typically do not look at. But come game time when you see that kind of move. We anticipated some of the how can Belichick be a dog I have to take him element to this game. And we did see some more of the tickets on New England, and when you have a stand-alone game like that on Saturday night, we anticipated that line coming a little bit further down. I got to tell you my assessment of where that line was going changed kind of in the middle of the week. We got out ahead and laid it with the cult early in the week. And then once it didn't get to three or as soon as it got to three at one shop, there was a buy and it lasted seconds. I was like, man, I kind of think this might not get back to three now. And ultimately, the public's going to come in and kind of take this line down a little bit. So I know we got some comments from our listeners that said, hey it was a good call waiting on the money line, because I saved about ten or 15 cents. Oh, and I got a few texts from people panicked going on. Lines don't move normally move against you guys when you give it out and from two and a half to one and a half, not through key numbers. But it is always interesting because oftentimes even in the NFL, the last move can typically be right but to your point, this was the only NFL game that took place on Saturday, so anybody that waited until the final 15 minutes, books had no reason to try and keep their neck out there given that a predominant amount of public tickets came in on the underdog in that spot. It wasn't sure if there was anything else that stuck out to Jesus easy for me to say. Stuck out to you in a positive fashion from the weekend or we can happily transition into what we saw unfold at Heinz field Sunday afternoon. Yeah, lead us there. What a game that was. You want to talk about a wrong side winner? The Pittsburgh Steelers, where the definition of what it's like to bet the wrong side and a football game, but still be able to cash a ticket. Out gained three 18 to one 68 on the afternoon. 12 first down to the Steelers, 3.7 yards per play. They ran the football 17 times for 35 yards. They were one of three on red zone drives. And while they forced four turnovers, which is great, the Steelers gained a grand total of 58 total yards on the ensuing drive from that. Chris Boswell gets the MVP and a steelers defense that had been much maligned, did what they needed to create a short fields because it didn't look like Big Ben and company were going to be able to move the football. You shouldn't win games at home with ten days to prepare with your playoff lives on the line, churning out a 160 words of total offense. The Steelers were the team that didn't make mistakes. That's basically what this came down to. They were able to protect the ball. Big Ben was terrible, but he didn't turn it over. And that was huge. Boy was Big Ben bad. I'm looking at this now completion percentage 15% below expectation. All game treated the ball like a hot potato got rid of it in 2.1 seconds. We know he usually gets it away pretty quickly, but it's still in that 2.4 range, even quicker today we talked about bud Dupree returning for a big game like this against an old team that didn't want to pay him and he was able to get up. They got up close and personal a couple of times. So if you look at Ben everything was super short, is completed 2.8, not good. That was one of those games where I think I made a joke like both fan bases are going to hate me because I'm going to kind of shred them. But that's basically what it came down to. Those were two fade teams for us going at it. And we got kind of the slop fest I expected there and still really trying to figure out who was on that over because that went from 41 and a half out to 44. And I was like, you know what? This gets to 44. I'm probably going to have to hit this under a little bit, and then I got cold feet at the bell and as I watched the first quarter, I'm like, this thing is just not going to sniff. Well, I mean, speaking along those lines, I mean, that was a playoff tape atmosphere to a certain extent for those teams, but there was a playoff type atmosphere in Denver as well. Another total that took over money. Joe burrow did nothing to go out there and prove that issues was a true franchise quarterback, but you talk about making mistakes. I mean, pain, I haven't seen a more inept final 5 minutes of a half in a game that was three three all season than what Vic Fangio and company put on the books for the Denver Broncos and it was kind of a microcosm for everything that transpired in the second half and for all intents and purposes. We'll keep the Denver for Broncos on the outside looking into the AFC playoff picture. That was a huge game. And obviously, when you're at three three, a 6 point swing before the half is massive, not just for confidence, but how that thing entirely played out. I mean, I have no idea what they were doing there before the half. I don't think they knew. It's a really poorly coach team overall. Now, Vic is a very good defensive mind. Very good. One of the best. But aside from that, there's really not much going on and I think ultimately he'll be out of a job. Unless you can find a great quarterback where you're saying, hey, we're going to have Vic one more year. We like what he's doing with the defense. The young players are coming around. We have a surprise at defensive ends, retain looks fantastic. And we just have to equip him with the right quarterback in coordinator. Because pat Shermer stinks as well. You should not be a coordinator in this job. He should be done. So that's really the problem is offensively have a poor OC and then in drew lock enters a game. Not the best situation. Now that was surprising to me. And that's kind of the one thing that's really frustrating when you're betting some of these games. You give away 6 points at the end of the first half. And then you get the momentum score that no one saw coming from drew lock. You go up ten 9. And the one time Vic Fangio's defense needs a stop, can't get it. Right down the field. And replace completely zapped. Yep, two place. So those are always like the frustrating parts. His defense is weird as it sounds. It's good. It's great in the red zone, but if you look like the overall numbers, I know they've been decimated with injuries. There's slightly below average for the entire season coming into this game. But they're playing a little bit better in recent times because you did get some key cogs along the front 7 a little bit a little bit healthier. And the secondary was playing at a pretty damn good level. But it's like the one time your unit needed to stop yesterday. Couldn't get it. And then late in the game, too, right? You're down 5 at that point. We got to get these guys off the field. Joe burrow took that kind of sack because he wanted time to run. But he had a second and 6 borough kind of slides out of the pocket right instead of releasing it and throwing it out of bounds because he wanted to keep the clock churning. He takes a four yard loss at third and ten. Can't get off the field. So that's the frustrating part. If you're going to be a defensive guy, that's great. That you didn't give up a ton of points yesterday. Only 15. But boy, you couldn't get off the field when it was needed most. I mean, in this day and age, if you can't win an NFL football game when you only allow 15 points, something is fundamentally wrong on the other side of the ball..

"Heel fans. Welcome back to the second. Let's ride. We know what it is on monday or the day after the game when we talk about winners and losers and this week i had five winners and losers. Now let's be clear you're probably wondering you're probably asking yourself at this time. How in the world could you have five winners. I felt that there were players still played well enough to earn in deserve some credit and you might also be thinking eight losers i could have twenty two losers eleven on both sides of the football. I can't. I'm not doing that number one. I can't do that number two. I mean that would be a disa- longest article ever but also it would become monotonous. There were some players that could bounce either way like ben rothlisberger for the second straight week. I don't have money either list. It's a situation where i thought ben didn't play great. The interception was awful. I think we'll all admit that he'd admit that he did admit that after the game. But i also think about. He didn't play poor enough that i would put them on the loser list. So let's go through this. We'll we'll hammer these out. Five winners eight losers. Let's get started with winners top winter. I should have had this individual in the winters column last week after the win buffalo. But i didn't do it. I overlooked and i apologize. Not overlooking this though. Chris boswell deserves to be on the winners list. He was money from fifty six yards out the longest field goal in heinz field history. That's impressive. he's been money in the bank. Ever since two thousand eighteen it was just a debacle of the season. I said this on the post game show. I'll say it here as well. The steelers could have easily easily. Just said you know what in two thousand eighteen he was. That bad boswell. Was that bad that they said we're done with them. Just we'll get rid of in the nfl trees kickers like a dime a dozen anyways. But they stuck with them. Maybe it was for contractual reasons. Maybe it wasn't for whatever reason. Chris boswell has made the steelers say boy are. We glad we kept that guy. Around another solid outing by chris boswell. He deserves to be on the winners list. Next nashi harris stat line ten rushes thirty eight yards but he adds five forty three yards. Receiving any did have his first touchdown receiving touchdown. I've believe those about twenty three yards. So g harris najji harris again the stats don't really bear out that he should be on the winners list. But again this thirty eight yards boy. Did he have to earn him. He had to earn every single one of those thirty eight yards. And i love seeing the five receptions for forty three. The steelers should use more in the passing game. Everyone talked about his dual threat ability and things of that nature. The one thing though if you think back to everyone wants to compare them lady on bell and rightfully so i get very similar in stature style stuff like that but the steelers used more in passing. They actually trusted him to run routes to catch the football. I don't think najji is there from route running standpoint but he certainly capable if they can get him the bond space that's when he does his damage if that's passing soviet najji harris's a winner in this game next winter be wide. Receiver deontay johnson. Here is his stat line. He had nine catches on twelve targets for one hundred and five yards a forty one yard long. You know. I didn't mention this earlier in the first segment but when we talked about injuries deontay johnson should have been brought up in a on a meaningless play. I'm totally meaningless. The steelers are down by two scores. Twenty seconds left deonte johnson catches a pass injured his knee. No one knows the severity of that injury yet. But it's still an issue. He goes over one hundred yards of that catch but boy. Is that a costly injury. If he has to miss any time but deonte johnson played well the miscommunication with ben roethlisberger is still a question but in terms of production he produced deonte. Johnson deserves to be on the winners list. Next winter in. This is a guy that was on my losers listen. The preseason did not play in week one but played in a big way in week. Two robert spelane cymbeline last week. The shin injury leading up to the game and play this week with devon bush out spelane played a lot and he really looked like he was comfortable again. The reason why he looked comfortable is he didn't have to cover. Everyone says well. Roberts spelane can't cover. We know this anyone who watches football watches. The steelers is he's not his forte. his forte is running downhill tackling. That's what he does the best. And even though spelane. I thought got screwed on that roughing the passer call or unsportsmanlike con. Whatever they called it. When derek carr is scrambling and he doesn't slide spelane hits him in the shoulder with his shoulder. It looked it looked worse than it was. But my goodness they they flagged him for a bad foul stat. Line explained twelve tackles. Eight solo tackles and one tackle for loss. Either robert splaine did a good job. He deserves to be on the winners list for this game. Especially when probably up until friday. He thought he was just going to be a reserve player. He gets thrust into a bigger role and he plays well the last winter before we go over to the losers columnist melvin. Ingram his stat line. He had four tackles one solo. Tackle one sack in one. Tackle for loss nova ingram was called just like alex. Highsmith was he was called on moore. Duty based on tj wads injury and. You could definitely see the both of those players kind of kind of winded at times. They weren't used to it with tj water in there. They have a three-person rotation they are fresh they're all able to rotate around without t. J. watt melvin ingram. Now highsmith and jamir jones were called on to doing more and more in that became. They became an issue but nonetheless. Melvin ingram gives his first sack. As a member of the steelers i thought he was disruptive At the same time. I think we were all hoping a little bit more production from both ingram and highsmith art. Let's go to the losers list. This is a long one. I'm going to start off with trae. Turner now we've learned a lot. Since the end of the game about the situation that happened. After the steelers scored harris had his first touchdown receiving touchdown trey turner was objected in. This was for what he spit on an opponent. Mike tomlin was absolutely irate. After this and i didn't understand at the time. And i want to apologize. I'm what am i apologizing for. I don't really want to apologize. I wanna make sure everyone understands. It's people that follow me on twitter. they were kind of giving me a hard time. When i had not seen the video of trae turner spitting. I had not seen the reports. Either and i tweeted mike. Tomlin has every right to be mad because they were two penalties at the same time offsetting penalties. One player gets dejected. And the other doesn't i didn't know the trade turn spit on someone come to find out. At least. According to the steelers that trade term was he is spit on first and then he retaliated. Well you know what. I'm a father. I'm also a schoolteacher and you we always say the person that retaliates is the one that always gets caught. That doesn't make what they did right. That's just the way it works. A lot of times trade turner's veteran. Mike tomlin said that in his post game press conference very even keel. He's not a young guy not a hothead so when he was that irate mike tomlin knew something was up while at the same time. If you're a veteran you have to understand that even if someone spits on you and i understand that that is the lowest of the low. You can't retaliate. You can't put your team in that situation. A reminds me of the search of the time. I believe it was markey's pounds. He's rookie season to two thousand and ten and there was a play in markey's pounds. He was getting kind of getting into a scuffle. After the play and mike maitama employ them to the side. And he's yelling at him. You can't do that you can't do that..

"Las you roughly between six to eight weeks so allah won't be done for the year but we won't be seeing him for a significant portion of time after that He also talked about tj. What who had a another groin injury and missed the second. Half of the game is really unfortunate. Because tj watt was lighting it up in that first half Put together nicely game from cell once again and put up another sack on the sack column. The last injury the game happened on the last play of the game. That being deontay johnson. Who's helped off the field by two two members of the steelers team He is currently being evaluated for a knee injury. So hopefully that is not one. That's significant one but it didn't look too good On the field so hold their breath and we will get you that information as soon as we can over at pine the steel curtain dot com coach salman then kind of got into question periods. The first thing he was kind of asked about and then spoke on Was just the general sense of this game coach. Tomlin basically pointed at this group as a whole that needs to grow Most because there are so many new faces in in primary roles especially with all these injuries. A ton of rookies today They have to grow in their roles. You have to be more comfortable for being nfl players. And they have to take the next step because simply they are the next man up and they are the guys that are going to be in that lineup Coached allman was also asked about so that punt on fourth down about eight minutes left in the game and the steelers were down two scores. Whether or not you thought about going for it I it was a fourth in one rather Coach tomlin said they thought about it but they're comfortable putting the defense and position at to get the ball back. That's exactly what the defense did do now. After that chris boswell hit that heinz field record. Fifty six yard field goal The steelers would not get the ball back until about twenty seconds. Left in the game with an insurmountable score ahead of them so In a way the punt worked out but the playcalling after that did not coach. Tom was in once again. Asked about the the rugs touchdown and what they're coming to the minute details at the steelers could work on So play like that doesn't happen simply put coach thomas. You've got to put the lid on all plays like that. Basically saying you can't be beat over the top and not let Other teams beat you as long touchdowns with which is exactly what henry rugs. And derek carr were able to do to the pittsburgh steelers echoes elmo's and asked about the trade turner incident Tallinn's.

"So i'm like they can win this game. I just don't expect it. Because i've seen this movie in. This movie starts out this particular way. So i did not expect this whatsoever. So i'm gonna talk a little bit. Why this was one of the most fulfilling opening games i've ever seen and i wanna ask you guys but i i want to ask you your knee jerk reactions and opening remarks and let me start with tony i. This is why it's great to be a fan. Because i'm one of the people who didn't pick them to win. I thought they would. I thought it'd be a close game like the last two war between the two teams the kind of defensive battle a lot of turnovers maybe the bills would pull it out. That i mean i and it looked like it was heading in that direction after the first two quarters But i was pleasantly surprised by how they turn things around in the second half. They clearly have a lot of work to do on offense. There's no question you can't deny that. They have a lot of work yet they have to do. They have a lot of young guys on that offense. New coordinator new office of line coach. It's not going to a whole new often my basically so it's not gonna. They're not gonna gel overnight but that defense is it's elite. It's top shelf. And and i just to me and i was saying this off season. I thought it was impossible to think that this team or silly to think the team's only gonna win four or five games with that defense. It's just too good to be that kind of a team when you're that elite on one side of the ball you're gonna you're gonna be in just about every game so my my knee jerk. Reaction is while when a great defense and it reminds me a lot of the late. Oh teams shannon white. What were your initial thoughts. When that game was over read you can start off with When the first half was over in your thoughts at the end of the game so what was going through your mind all along my friend. I was aggravated at myself for not listening to my own advice. I had said. I picked against him which i rarely do pick the bills. Twenty eight to twenty four. And i said all along that the steelers office doesn't have to be the best in the late with the defense and special teams that they they just got to be good enough and show stating improvement each week To hopefully be playing their best you know when they get to the playoffs Aspect to struggle which they did the first half was was was very Inconsistent insists that they couldn't get anything going on no chemistry or cohesion They made halftime adjustments. Something they never used to do and Made strung together enough big plays and and pass it affirms calls and To put some points you know gets a few scoring drives going and at the huge so i was very Heavy after the game An aggravated at myself for not having more faith Because you know if i listen to myself out of probably take you know what. Here's here's the thing. And i'm i'm gonna bring up ryan brown. I bryan brown is a A great contributor on the live chat definitely a A big supporter of all of our se podcasts. Thanks brian for coming in. You guys aren't going to pick the raiders are you. I don't think no. I'm not going to be be that guy. The picks the raiders. I don't pick. I'm not the guy that says all right. I'm gonna pick the raiders so the steelers will win. I don't do that. I mean i i am not. I'm not that full of myself saying that i can. I can change the outcome. Even though i did panic at the beginning of the game. And we'll talk about this too. I was wearing a white minka fitzpatrick jersey in like turn the game on. And i see chris boswell with black on and i. I was weird run. I'm like no no no no no no no no and i ran and i put on a word but by the time i got it on seventy five yard return.

And if you look at the game in three phases, and I think on their face they won and I can sit soon about the other two phases, So there's some stuff to clean up but again, then being able to kind of go their backs there, especially like to bend or break type mentality. When it gets down to the red zone enforced feel goes instead of six and seven there, you know, they played well again. They just made a couple more plays than we did, and we expected this type of game from this type of team. You know, it's a very well coached team, somebody one of the better team. Play all year to be honest, but as we move forward to find ways to go out there, next cute and get the wealth playmakers. "Running back so he takes wordsworth. Let's go to special teams now special teams. I wanna just lumped into one. You're giving a special teams grades. You have to think about the seventy five yard returned. Open the game. You have to think about the blocked. Punt scoop score. Touchdown ulysses gilbert the third and everything in between we had a jordan berry esque shank by the press although he did follow that up with some other good punts so brian. Anthony davis grade that steeler special teams as a whole. So if we're taking all of that in consideration right away you should go into the season. But i think we'll go with a c. Plus because chris boswell came up huge that touchdown was a game-breaker and the seventy five yard. The seventy five yard return from the bills at the beginning only netted three points. So i'm going to say that everything else in between kind of pushes the arrow towards the plus more than just right down the middle. So we'll go see. Plus i david obey you. I'm going to go be and it's because it would have been an errand a plus because of everything else other than one. The the opening kickoff to the last kickoff. I was frustrated. I mean come on danny smith. Why are you having chris boswell. Doing the short run up late in the game. Trying to not just to touch back. After you've given up these yards the one thing that you when you went up ten points with you know on your own. The last field goal. The last thing you wanted to do was give them a big return so just let them start at the twenty five and yet the philosophy was. Let's see if we can. We can do that. I i didn't like that call as much of anything. But i'm not gonna blame the players as much of that so other than those couple returns. I mean blocked punt touchdown. That's what won the game when you think about. That's what won the game changed. The camp sutton play then followed by that one on the next on the next series. That's two four thousand. Plays back to back that. Change this game completely. And if there is such thing as a seventy five yard return. They could turn into positive. Somehow the steelers experienced that when they gave up a seventy five yard return the defense comes out and shuts them down three plays in there kicking a field goal. So not that. I want to see a seventy five yard. Return to start the game. The defense goes on does that. I guarantee gave him a little bit of optimism pie. You know they're starting to feel good about themselves in this matchup. Mattie peril gives a seven ninety nine dingo dollars he said this win helps when it comes to playoff positioning tiebreakers particularly if we finish with nine eleven wins Plus a bath the hell on feeding plus what i'm darla pirlo punt block. Is he speaking australian or something. I thought you just spend some time with them on that show as they as. They do their slang sling slang so this language. This chad checkout touchdown. Okay we have about eight minutes left. I wanna do game balls So let's go ahead and you can pick on it it just one game. This time we're only giving about one game can be offense defense. Special teams doesn't matter. We're going to keep the rotation. Brian go ahead of the of course so many of the give out. And there's some obvious ones i'm gonna go less obvious and i'm giving a gimpo to traynor. Would who. I thought did a lot of things. Sorry i'm surprised. I thought he did a lot of things in this game to give that team confidence and he was not a liability so they can focus on other things. I know that's probably a left field but come on from the cheap seats. let's give it to tray. I shouldn't expect nothing less from bj any so. We'll see plays the steelers right brian. All right. let's let's get a day hoosier gable. Okay my game ball to me. There was three players brandon and take one of them so you all three of them. But it's it's big ninety seven. My goodness that guy was all over the place. I mean to passes defense a tackle for loss. A hit a sack four tackles at he was just eating up blockers. Just anytime you wanted to see. Where even tj tj satellite the the strip sack with tj. It's because he was a josh allen. Went to step up in the pocket and cam hayward was there so he had to go to the side and what comes from behind and gets him. That's why you know saxes. A team has a really big important thing but i thought cam stepped up and looked phenomenon. Then i'm gonna go at tom. Uruguay's is two dollars game. All the one hundred million dollar man. Tj trent jordan. I mean the designs a huge deal and everyone's eyes on him. What do you do you go out and you make a game. Impacting plays is what he did. And don't think there's so many plays at he makes that are maybe a half tackle. But or maybe like a tackle for loss but they're huge plays tj wa with no preseason no team drills nothing out in dominated that's what i saw. He absolutely dominated. Let's go to frodo. frodo watt. I guess that's the long lost brother. Four ninety nine. He's said bold prediction. Dj wide wins league. Mvp an has the sacher twenty four sacks. Thirty five tackles for loss twelve forced. Fumbles in fifty quarterback kids as someone saved as numbers. It's crazy okay. Go ahead some aaron. Donald will still win defensive player. Took it personally awesome stuff. Brought this up. I still miss two stats. He had a forced fumble. Which unfortunately josh allen still recovered and he had the fumble recovery on the tj. Watch ships ac. I mean you think that fumble recovery cam kind of come up with that ball. Came head while yes he was. He was credited with that. According to the nfl media report lunar. I'm talking about when he was chasing down. Alan alan year is is the fumble. The ball clearly is a fumble. Did come up with the football. I think he took it away from allen was down away if they wouldn't have been able to see that allen got camera to come out of the power with it but i think that they could see that he got. I thought go. I thought that was one that they may be challenged if they felt that he really quick after that they got up to the line and went. Yeah so all right. Let's see some final thoughts here brian. Anthony davis what are your final thoughts this game in week one. Well we had so many weeks to gear up for the buffalo game. It seems like we've been talking about bills. Mafia josh allen the steelers offensive line the steelers secondary the lack of depth all over the place. Tj watts contract. You know it all came together you just talked about. Tj watt and. He did the ultimate. Hey guys hold. My beer goes in rex. Everything cam hayward was missing steph onto it on the other side and we talked about this on the preview the other day and we said that this guy is the guy that is going to step up as well and one guy. We didn't give a game ball. Because i want all the way from the field was cam sutton. Yes and cam.

"It's it's one of those lineups on that line of we have The fantasy football. Fix jeremy beds talking about as well as the ohioans on the steelers power half hour and all of our afternoon shows. Remain the same so make sure you check it out. You don't wanna miss a stink thing. I'm amped up. I'm excited for this game this sunday. And let's talk about it. the hook. The focus of this show is going to be what the steelers have to do to beat the bills and week one. I read an article that runs every friday unless game played on thursday. And it's the expert. Picks i go online. I look at some predominant websites. Were talking about like years. Eight today. The sporting news. Cbs sports espn. And i get a feel for what the experts are thinking about this game and they are really heavy on the bills. I understand why i get it. I understand why the bills are a lot of people. Have them to be in the. Afc game this year. Not maybe even being the afc representative in the super bowl so with that being the preseason narratives running the team it's going to be a difficult task for the steelers to go in there on the road and beat the bills not saying therein. Picking them the win. I'm not saying who the to listen to the second half of that. But here's what the steelers in my opinion have to do to beat the bills week. One i'm going to break it down on offense and defense three keys for both sides of the ball three keys for both and let's start. Why offense why ben rothlisberger fan. I've always leaned towards the offense side of the football to start on offense number one. It's obvious it's probably these aren't in any particular order. But if i had to rank them it would be number one in that is run the football. I guaranteed you. Ask any random seal fan. Hey what do you think. The steelers need to do better to win a week. One they probably say the same thing. We've got to run the ball. The steelers were dead last last season. We know this yards per carry yards per game. That's awful you draft nause harass you kinda rebuild the offensive line you bring a new coordinator new offensive line coach. It's the rubber meets the road on sunday. It's it's you know crap or get off the pot but it that way. Now's the time for the steelers to really show that adrian cleanse aggressive nature net candidates creativity najji harris's skill set in even though they're young and they have some new faces on that offensive line. If there's one thing they should be able to do it is run. The football more effectively than they did. In the last season season in the half with brandy feet ner at the helm this goes beyond just giving them balance. I always talk about balance offensively and how important that is but it helps them. Control the clock it helps them dictate the way the game is going to be played and it's been a long time since we've seen the steelers ben rothlisberger under center hands it off to the running back two running backs three yards second down steelers. Run it again. They get four yards and then maybe they set up a third and three where they can run it again if they won. It's been a while. But i feel like this is shaping up to be just that that's number one run. The football number two the steelers offense needs to convert in crucial situations can't say enough. They need to convert in crucial situations. Were talking third downs and especially in the red zone. I love chris boswell. I don't wanna see him kicking field goals. I wanna see him kicking extra points if they can score touchdowns in not field goals and you're probably listening we'll jeff that's very elementary thing to say about the game of football sometimes. Football isn't elementary game. Convert in the red zone. Get down inside the twenty put six instead of three on the board. That can be the difference between a and a loss said. That's number two on my list. The third is they have to whether the early storm. I would expect if the buffalo bills win the toss. They're going to defer to the second half. It's going to be a raucous crowd. A place like buffalo where they might think they might have had fans air oak a few in twenty twenty but it was never a packed house. It's going to be a pactel's coming up on sunday. It's going to be an unbelievable environment. And i would expect the steelers to kind of have to weather that storm like i said they might stumble out of the gates. I don't think fans should get down on them if they can string together. Some first downs. Flip the field. Hey were okay. let's just keep going. Let's get our feet underneath us. The steelers are going to be in a unique situation. A situation that half the nfl's traveling on the road and kind of having to get reacclimated to a hostile environment. I know the kendrick green was asked about that. This week about are they doing silent counts and stuff like that and he basically said look. They're practicing everything. They're not sure what it's going to be like. Well i can tell you what it's going to be like. The bills matia is going to be out and they're going to be strong. They just need to whether that early storm. Don't turn the ball over. Don't make that big mistake and you'll be fine. I think the steelers offense will be just fine. Let's go to the defensive side of the ball. Before i break the defensive side of the ball number one make the bills one dimensional. This is something dick lebeau used to always preach when he was the defensive coordinator. We want to stop the run. Make them one dimensional. Make them one dimensional make them you dictate what they do and what he meant by that was when he stop the run early create third and longs. That's what you want. That's what you wanna do as a defense when you're that good and i think the steelers defense could be that good. They need to stop the run. Tyson lulu miss practice on wednesday. That's something to keep an eye on. I haven't gotten the the thursday practice report yet when this has been report when this has been recorded but nonetheless if he can't play that's going to be a big loss for the steelers when it comes to stopping the run but if they make them one dimensional. I think this is good. That's step number one step number two. Don't let opportunity slip through your fingers both figuratively and literally. We know that josh allen can be a little aggressive and josh allen can be a risk taker. It's always been his mo. He is kind of like one of those young gunslingers. The way they used to talk about ben rothlisberger. They now talk about josh allen and they talk about okay this is a guy that's gonna take some shots he's gonna make some risk throws if a defensive back it's his hands on the football you gotta bring it down. I can't tell you if you were alive for taylor's career you know exactly how i feel. How many times at steelers fan see defensive back in position to get his hands on the football and it slipped through their fingers and my brother he always says. Hey they play defense for a reason. Here's is vacant. Catch they be receiver and he's right. He is absolutely right. But in this regard. I look at it and say the steelers can just take a and that's also fumble recoveries the bog on the turf. If the steelers can get all the turnovers you can get. My goodness would be a huge step towards winning this football game and upsetting the bills on the road yet win that turnover battle download those opportunities slip. And lastly you gotta get after josh allen. But she have to own him in coning him in that slogan that statement. That was very that was made popular trying to think through the defensive medicine. Dick lebeau but might have been also keith butler but i remember when dick lebeau used to always go up against michael vick whether it was philadelphia whether it's with atlanta any of the teams were michael vick played. They played the steelers..

"I mean that's the last time he's been on the field so he's going to have all that time still to make to try to build up to. Because if you're not confident in what you're doing as an offensive lineman you're going to be a half a step slow which is which is i would say Seven sixteenths to slow. If you know what i mean. So almost would not good at all. So if he gets fully acclimated and this is still what you get. You might have to start thinking about if you have other options of the team. That could could step in their more kenan offensive. Line kid trae. Turner kinda get acclimated in jail in a practice setting. Can they actually get that done. Can they gel in that setting. Because that's all they have right now you just mentioned has been since early august that he's been on the field. So do you think you coached it. You've played it. The offensive line can an office of line of all denver together. They're practicing day in day out there getting after comme show up in week one big. Wow they look like they've actually got their crap together Honestly i'm gonna say yes as someone that mainly thinking of it as much from a coach's perspective that like even just when i would be doing individual drill work and when i say not individual like we would break it down and do just like guard tackle scenarios where you would have defensive lineman and linebacker and you would have to you know practice was going to block and do do these things even and then when you're out there just running your offense even if it's against a scout team bottom line is is that every snap you take in practice with the guys that you're going to be playing with is something that helps you to develop more together and have an idea what they're gonna do because if you're zone blocking If he's zone blocking with the tackle let's just say and he's not hundred percent confident they're not just not on the same wavelength. The this should be one of those those things where they'd come to the line. You don't even have to look at you. Ever had that did we. You know all you have to do. Is you know a lot of times. Like with your spouse all you gotta do. Is you just something happens. You look at that may look at you and you instantly know that you're both thinking the same thing. Yep these guys should even have to look at each other. They should come up. They should see that defense and they instantly should have confidence that they know. Exactly what the guy next to them on. You're right on your left or go to do and practise helps that in that respect to to gain that confidence figure it out. Now you're right you are right. Let's go to another player leetch tournament and and this is a player. I had on my list brian. That's chris boswell. And it's good when you talk about your kicker and let's be honest sam. Sloman had no chance all of winning. It was just camp leg. We always have a camp arms. Quarterback is a camp leg. Chris boswell. I'll ask you this. Because i can't i can never get rid of two thousand eighteen in the back. My it wasn't that the year to eighteen he was. I mean the missing kicks chip shots. Because it was it was twenty seventeen where he was coming through and it was less game winning kick game winning. Kick game winning kick you know. Just get baas kalsa. He hasn't really had that and then twenty eighteen that it just eighteen was awful. It was awful and then twenty nine thousand nine rebounded. Good season like nineteen and twenty. He hasn't really he hasn't had to make those kicks right. That's that's why that's in the back of your head. does he. When he when he had the job. I'll never forget the the the great hook and ladder to set up the boswell kick the senate to overtime and he just wipes out oakland right in oakland. You know what i'm saying. Dan was that summed up the year right there that that he was having when that was yes because that was two thousand eighteen and we have seen him have to come through with the clutch kick with with three seconds left on the clock or even a minute left on the clock. He just he just hasn't been tested in that manner since then and not enough to really instill confidence. But i'm i two years removed from that i i think he's fine. I mean he hasn't been talked about for a reason this because he's making kicks. Hopefully presley can hold the ball the way that he likes it. We'll see dave. Give someone on your list someone on my list. I put one. I put one. Eric hebron put air he brought on this which is interesting because things push back a little bit this week with some of our stuff because of the fifty three man roster and practice squad for those of you that are checking out behind still kurt. Dot com your one-stop shop province. Pittsburgh steelers steelers for texas on friday. It will be out tomorrow. And it's on eric. He brought and it's actually on him as a blocker because there's people just people jump on narratives you know kind of like how you know mason rudolph after he struggled in two thousand nineteen. There's going to be certain steeler fans and it doesn't matter what he does this. Preseason him not finding the touchdowns on didn't help it's never going to be good. You know so one of those you sometimes. Yeah there's players if you get locked in and believe or something they believe that that easy ron constantly drops football but almost all of his drops last year came after he played more snaps than ever had before and dealing with injury so it was probably a you know when you have nagging injury. Sometimes your mind isn't quite as clear with the ball but they also say that he can't block if you looked at the preseason game this year and this is what jeffrey lined out lot lined up. You can't say that about him looking at this. Preseason so eric bronze very important and another thing. Jeffrey just did this as a side note for article he says. If you go back and look at eric hebron in there were times when rudolph and haskins the gabe he was wide open. They and he just wasn't the guy they were looking at to throw the ball. Like ben rothlisberger is not going to miss him. Being that open if matt canada's using the tight end in that way i think eric iran could be huge for this team this year but so many people want the shiny new toy and pat fair moves. That they're i mean. People are saying trading Treated you no. You need tight ends. I think he's a guy that that's gonna come out and have a much bigger years last year. Well for me i. E ron is the for some reason to why as long as i can remember maybe it was when i was growing up watching eric green tight but there is no prettier pass in the game football to me then the beautiful touch pass down the middle down the seem over the linebacker that writes i married the shoulder or over the shoulder and they catch it and they run and i saw a few this area screen before he was hampered with his concussion issues and stuff and i love that. That's that's like that's lebron's we'll house in this dealers did not exploit that at all under randy feeder which. They didn't do a lot of stuff on a rainy feeding her but still that was one of them. I for me it was. I hope eric on has a big year. People wanna cling to these narratives. Like i i hope. None of these narratives out for instance. I hope that we don't have to see mason rudolph. I hope that. We don't see johnny johnson dropping any passes for some reason steeler fans in steeler fans. Sure every fan base. It's some people are rooting against some players. Based on the fact that they want to keep these narratives going is really strange. Yvonne falls into that category. Yeah i mean just to throw out a number. And i mean makes you check out this article on friday at curtain but everyone's always like oh affirmed mussab a blocking tight end and ibran isn't if you look at you know whether you like him or not. The pf scores turkey. Bron head a was was what was it. Twenty one point seven points higher than pratt firm ruth and run blocking great of a seventy seven point four versus a fifty five point seven. Eric brown was one of the top blocking ends in the preseason he was he was seven. Go at number seven going into week. Four and he didn't play very many snaps. Get that great of a score. And therefore other people passed him he finished twelfth in the nfl as a run blocking tight end. And i mean you don't you don't mix eric. He brought run blocking tight end together. The we're we're told that the that can't be but if he's added that to his game. Look yeah it will be good. I'll tell you what we're at the halfway point. Let's take a quick break. We're watching on facebook or youtube states. Stay here we're not going anywhere if you're listening on the audience side head over to you..

"Davis fell ill and is taking some rest in recovery time. We're talking about players that have not been talked about a lot but yet are needing to be discussed for their pot potential impact in so dave. Why don't you give us another player in the list. We've already gone over like players like eric. iran. Chris boswell trade turner. Who's next on your list. I've got tyson osceola and that's just because of who he's been with the steelers ever since he's been with the steelers he's not been that flashy guy and he's the kind of guy that you don't you don't miss them till he's not there in the steelers almost completely mr miss year but luckily they turn that around but he'll still such a crazy but he's someone people he's not a guy that people talk about and yes he's one of the oldest guys on the team but he's still out there getting the job done and if he's still out there stuffing the middle at nose tackle and also possibly filling in some when they're in sub packages Staying on the field. With until while stefan to it's on the i r. He's going to be an important guy and and will be very much appreciated when the regular season gets here. Think about what it would look like with two ago. I are if there was no tyson a little. I would be drastically different. And yes chris way healthy. He talked about how that's such a big deal for him compared to last season but he's not the same he's just not the same tyson. Lulu is a. He's one of those old guys has all the savvy. Veteran moves knows what to do in certain situations. So i agree with you. I think that absolutely A he deserves it. He doesn't get talked about a lot unless he has like a great game. He has ranking Hit ec is being on a defense on what we're talking about it. Is you have the starting group. Who do you think they're gonna be. If you're naming all three cam hayward we've vigor lulu it knows it's going to be warmly worm leading. He's going to be the other end. Yeah that's that's who it was in the preseason when they were all there like eve against detroit It was. I mean the the depth chart went warmly. And then mondale. And i don't think monday is gonna start but he's gonna get some playing time. 'cause jeffrey benedict i keep bringing him up and he kept pointing him out. And you'll see it if you check in tomorrow. What i have the full preseason. Pf scores for the steelers defense in an article. I like i said whether you like pf escorts or not but still that mondo was. He was up there because he he had a real good preseason absolutely so a lose good for that one for sure i'm gonna go with. Derek watt for my next one. And this is. This is weird early on. Maybe even going back to manage any everyone was talking about. Derek watt. oh my gosh. They're running derrick wahdan wheel routes all my gosh derek. Watches caught a pass on the sideline. Oh gosh derek watts being used a ton and then the preseason came and derek while wasn't used hardly at all he was basically what he was last year. I still think that they have a lot of this. Fullback stuff in there up their sleeve that they're going to do this season. I think the derek what is going to be utilized more as as as a blocker but also as a receiver as an option as an athlete. I hope he is. And i hope he's exceeds based on his salary in that my goodness if you're pay a guy that much you hope you get something out of it Do you think that was all smoke and mirrors. And let's just throw something against the wall and see if it sticks with derek water early in this off season or do you think that he could actually be an impact player on the offense. I mean he played eight offensive snaps in the preseason. I mean it's crazy that all of a sudden they're going to bring him out really start utilizing them i did. I don't know what to expect with them. And i really don't i. I mean as soon as i think they're going to do one thing then they don't they don't use them all all season and then they hand the ball off to him twice in the playoffs. No i don't even. I don't need to be day. A hand off be on the field and beat be started stuff honestly. There's so much mad canada's offense that they weren't really showing in the preseason because it went to that for all we know next we're gonna come out in a lineup where it's odd words nausea harris derek. Watts eric. Hebron pat fair and chase klay pole. And and you're like oh my goodness huge lineup. And they're going to spread them five wives. You know or something like that. I'm waiting for i some something crazy like that. You know what i'm saying. But i haven't seen it so we'll see i. I really don't every time i'd say that. Oh yeah. I think they'll use what more they don't. So i'm gonna say if you're not gonna use them at all. That's what i'm going to say. And then maybe get so. I live chats tarmac in the contract. We're not talking about that. But let's go down to brian's list. He put a player on here. That i was gonna not challenge him but ask him about. This player was talked a lot about this off sales cam sudden but he had him on his list as definitely impact player. I guess my question for you. Dave is how do you see them utilizing camden this year. Do you have him at the outside and moving in you have him staying on the outside trying to fill roles on the inside with someone else. What do you think is gonna do at that. Cornerback physician oh my goodness. That's the million dollar question. Do you know. I mean they have to put something on the inside. Whatever they're whenever they were going to that is mullet gonna be health. You know they brought him back. Is he healthy enough to do it. is like we said in the first part of the show. Is you know karl..

"A great at on brian. What do you see happening with this. Putting battle going into the final week of the preseason. Well i think the the punting battles actually decided at this point because you have to look at that. Recent history books with jordan barry and the inconsistencies. That you had you have to look at the reason why you cut him last year in favor of mister dustin colquitt and the fact that he came that he they had to bring him back because the coke would experience experiment was bad. So i think you have to look for the fact that you have not seen really. Have you seen any problems in presley. harbin's game at all. He has not struggled and he want. He's a younger leg. He's boomed it that fifty order tonight. I think kind of sealed it for him. I think i think really. He has to struggle for there to be a problem. Yeah dave what are your thoughts entering the final week with this red hot battle of punning team. Yeah well i think that not only did harbin have a fifty yard punt the fact that it was a it was a three yard return. That was it because he did not kick his coverage and was the hand time man he give me. I don't i have the number of the hang time. I wish i did. I mean i would have to go back and and watch and try to time it myself on. Tv you remember. They they do do that anymore. I remember back in the day. Have every time there was a punt. There was they had the little clock on it in the corner. Remember that idea how. How long has it been since they did that. But yeah i. I always liked that but yeah i don't know what thanked but bottom line is you can't kick it i will. I will tell you this jeff. I hate to tell you this. He was not the best punter on the field or night. The detroit no reason pro bowler man a seventy three. Seventy or seventy something. You are dude you know out of bounds. I mean that was pretty impressive. There little bit you know. That's a bit much to last the rookie right now but Yeah that might have been until the fourth quarter. That was the strength of the lions game. Was there punter. but then i. I was happy with big press. Jeffrey vanities in live chat. Says up. put this up on the screen Three yards isn't that the longest attorneys allowed this. Preseason this it probably is in when you think about that seventy two yard or seventy three or bomb by the lions punter presley. hard and really hasn't been in that situation where you just get to kick it as far as high as you can. He's pretty much been in his boss. Where you want to angle it. You wanna get good. Hang time you wanna make sure you're trying to put the bat the spin on the ball that you want so Yeah i think. It's inter- in chris boswell. We're good with him. Obviously he's the kicker but i mean we're confident were big. He's back and all the issues in the past. Brian you agree. Yeah absolutely dave same. Yep okay let's let's gain basel two game balls will do an off game ball and a defensive game ball Let's go with brian. Who's your first offensive game ball going to well. You know what i've I'm probably stealing from dave. So dave is going to probably take the guy that that i don't take so i'm going to give him the obvious one and i'm gonna go with ben rothlisberger. Okay what about you dave. Well there was two obvious ones. One of them was the guy the perfect. Qb or quarterback. I don't know that. qbr. I go to screw that up. But the with a perfect quarterback rating and then the other one is a guy that two touchdowns. So you've got you've got to give it to the rookie for for holland two touchdowns that's you that's your big bed would want and get the game ball on this one if you know what i mean right. Those are obvious. I have to go someone else. And i'm going to give it to nause harris just for the catch and run playmaker. He's like he's going to bust one big run by the way. So here the over under. Let's recap us for those. Listen to the steelers preview. Every thursday night live on youtube and on facebook najji hairs. I had the rushing yards for thirty eight yards. He was under that said. We took the under there. I don't think anyone took the under and then total yards fifty one ends. Obviously he finished over on that one just to recap but i'll give it to najji. What about defensive side brian. He given the game ball to well. That's that's really tough. Nobody really stands out completely to me. So one play. That i really loved was by. Big number eight. Melvin ingram so. I'm gonna go with ingram on this one. I thought he was holding down that spot really well and it's nice to have the depth of that guy in there especially with them when what is back having those guys moving in and out. It's well we haven't had the the depth at at outside linebacker on the edge in a longtime all right. That's a good one. That's a good one. So what about you dave. He won't have ingram. Who do you have on the events. I love the fact that you that you're like. I don't know if there's one player that really stood out because the defense like i said in the first half gave up a total of what i say sixty five yards and yet it wasn't like one player was the person that was doing everything. It was basically everyone across the board. So with that I mean that that makes it really tough If i'm just trying to think of anyone that really had any any outstanding stats and there. There really wasn't. I mean i like the ingram one I it was nice to. I'll just say this. I'll go make if it's patrick. It was nice to see him back there doing his thing That that kind of allow that the steelers defense to do things a little bit differently. I'm gonna go. Joe haden because here's a guy that wants wants an extension any. If you only could pick off that pass. I think really would have been like. Hey i'm still. i'm still here. But he made the break on that play and that was a. It's a veteran. Move when you watch that play from the end zone camera which they showed that when you almost picked it off he. He's just reading the quarterback and he's he's making a break on the ball he's not technically probably supposed to be there but still I've joe haden he. He changes the dynamic. When he's in there just like making fitzpatrick does so all right guys. let's do some final thoughts here. It was kind of a weird game. It's been the antithesis of all the other. Preseason games in terms of the steelers played well in the first half not so great in the fourth. Quarter brian what are your final thoughts after this game. It's twenty six twenty steelers. You know what. I'm looking at the score being twenty six to six at one point and when i look at that i you know that game is done so when when you go ahead and give up the the twenty the extra two touchdowns especially with an onside kick with threes and fours in there. I don't get that concern. When i look at the fact that we need a ben rothlisberger to come back and be vintage ben rothlisberger and do the things that he did. The pump fake. Like you mentioned jeff was glorious. The run to get out of trouble was tremendous. So you gotta love that you throw in the fact that he's got a brand new toy that we can trust in pat fry rates while not j. Nausea harris. what he's doing..

"This guy just has the most punishable face and resume in the history so whenever he sounds like he's anti fund which is what israel is whether that's what they wanted to be or not. It is what it's being called already as it was just a poor decision by all parties. I think talk well. Yeah and you look at the. How low the self-awareness is. I mean. i don't know if he thought. I don't know what kind of reaction he assumed people were going to get but like if he did know that the onslaught that came after it was going to come. Then you've got an even bigger issue. Connor i hate. This just makes no sense. It makes no sense especially with the guy. Like hey sean. Payton was basically pay employers to murder quarterback. And here we are. Now he's saying hey pant even celebrate after you get a first down like there's gotta be some sort of okay. You can't throw the ball after a first down atagi or something but you should be able to show some emotion maybe talk a little shit and then keep it moving like it has to either be way over the top celebration and that can be a penalty but it can't be this small little shit that's like all right fifteen yards the whole plays ruin your drives ruined punt the ball basically on second down because you're screw and what if you have a raft doesn't like one of the players. You know like that happens. That i think there's what didn't like me. He's like he. I think clearly i'm more. Call it all when three other restaurant was on somebody else. Now do that with this taunting thing. It's now the ref on the fields decision on whether or not it was ill. Wilder not like is that what. I don't understand i. I have no idea how this works out. Well i just don't know why it's a point of emphasis. That is the biggest thing for me as somebody who was in the league and saw the point of emphasis meetings behind the scenes and everything. They're trying to shape the future. And it's like i understand you like the way he said the talking like. Hey i hate to break it. The people like football football football is football. Football is a violent sport by the way. Football is a sport that to play. You have to have a lot of emotion you you hear those people that puke before every single game. There's people that run their heads into walls before games there's people that isolate themselves for six months because they have to get into the proper state of mind to run their face into other people to play this sport. Football is not like any other sport because nobody can create a sport that can survive this long as gladdy orrick. Gladatorial is that like gladiator liked. It's the most gladiatorial sport there is. I mean every sunday. My city is fighting. Your city are gladiators are going on the field. The fight your gladiators and we live in a society now with more information than ever on the future so the laws are changing but at the end of the day it is still played by dudes who believe it or not have to potentially be assholes to get the job done on. The field is being asked to run twenty two miles an hour. Run their face of somebody else or some others. Two people three people that are running at fifteen miles an hour. So if you don't want the potential to second afterward excitement still lost in the thing. I don't think you like the sport of football like i. Just don't think you fully. This is just like the people like the paint. A picture of what they want something to be an act as if that is how would actually is like. Hey this is not. Football is a sport of emotion. Like this is just how it is football. As a sport of opportunity. Football is a sport that should be welcoming to everybody all personalities all kinds. It is a unifier in the classical sense. That's why when politics which get involved in everything got brought in so many people got mad on both sides. i mean it was just like hey. Football is our ultimate getaway raw like you should. We should not be harnessing excitement. That's what makes our sport great. I would assume what happened. Was mara goes to his golf rounds on tuesdays after games and his four of old whites auto like when players talk after the down is over and he took it back and the competition committee. Didn't listen to anything ever says. And they just voted. Yeah go ahead good more. Do whatever you want and then this app you think just as soon as mars stock. Those things is just walk like that. I would assume so. There's no way tom what's behind this. Yeah because tomlin. I mean there's so much swag from com tomlin talk shit. So i heard a story. This alleged okay alleged. Obviously an alleged story. Chris boswell was kicking. Maybe going through a little bit of a slump and we're having a couple of and this is looking back hindsight not during his sump. It was not. He was not drinking during this stuff. I don't want to end this offseason looking back on slump you know and we just so happen to be sitting at I forget what by good bar. It's guy with todd. haley busted. His cowboy is so we're sitting at having a beer two or four. Know whatever it was and i was just chatting with him. Buzzes cool guy. I'm big fan of bosnia's human. I think he has grown and matured a lot. He hits the fuck of football. So i'm a big fan. I asked you know what happened. He goes he just didn't know how to tom..

"Looking at what. The pittsburgh steelers should use their newfound cap space for here in the twenty twenty one season. If you didn't already know the pittsburgh steelers have conferred even more money onto their books by restructuring the deal of steph onto it converting that money newest signing bonus and pushing that cap it further into the future a move that many thought would have happened way back at really at the start of free agency doesn't end up happening until here now in august. So what does that all mean for the steelers salary cap situation. Basically right now they sit at seventeen and a half million dollars cap space however. That really isn't the true number of how much money they technically have right now to. Really kinda break things down that seventeen and a half million dollars. Of course the steelers like to have some emergency spending money to go into the season. It's about five to six million dollars. Kind of goes towards that there also has to be a little bit more money it on the books from that rule of fifty one to the fifty three man roster of course adding two more contracts to that cap number on top of that really. There's a few things. The steelers need to take into consideration as well as building out their practice squad. So all of that will count to roughly around nine and a half million dollars or so so that leaves the steelers with upwards of eight nine million dollars of capable spending money again. Some of that will be kind of eaten up by tj. What extension however and. That's the first thing. I want to talk about the way the steelers new spend this money. Obviously by opening up a ton of cash a lot of people just instantly thought. Oh that's just going to end up in tj watts pocket really. That's not a hundred percent. The case tj water of course on the signing that signing air the fifth year option here in twenty twenty one so basically a new contract really isn't going to change too much of this year's capital his signing bonus could very well Depending on how much of that guaranteed money. Tj watt signs for however. It really shouldn't impact it salary-cap whatsoever really the potential. Here's for the steelers salary cap to kind of shrink but between one to five million dollars kind of depending how it all shapes up but most of the signing bonus money is really going to be stuff that hammers the salary cap in future years so while there will be some sort of impact here in two thousand twenty one especially with the size of the deal. It isn't something that we particularly have to worry about. What basically it comes down to now is the steelers will have about an extra six million dollars that they never have at this time of year and really that number could could grow even more with two pretty simple deals. First and foremost the steelers could create more seller cat by completing the final Salary restructure that they possibly could make here in twenty twenty one by restructuring. The deal of chris boswell which would open up a little more than a million bucks. Every dollar counts of course in the nfl but at this point it really wouldn't make too much more sense other than pushing more money into the future. The other thing the steelers could do and something i think is a whole lot. More likely is a joe haden contract extension and one of the reasons. Why it's more likely is because joe hayden and his agent have approached the steelers about basically putting a contract extension in place to have a deal. That joe haden can ride out the end of his career for and in doing so really. The steelers gained a ton of leverage in this situation because Joe haden saying he wants to retire steelers. The steelers aren't obligated to offer him a ton of money. Of course joe. Hayden is one of the highest paid players at his position in nfl history. So i there's also that sense prop joe hayden would be willing to take a significant pay-cut to continue his career with the block and gold and try to help win a championship for the first time in his career. So the potential is there for that and really if an extension is agreed upon and the steelers turn joins basically what's left on his contract in a signing bonus. The steelers could clear about four million dollars cap space. That hasn't been done yet. But if the steelers are really wanna be big game fishing like it. Kind of appears they are. That's a move. They could definitely consider making as of this moment. The steelers have about six million dollars in free cap space that they don't typically use at this point in the year to sign outside player or make some sort of secondary deal as in a trade. They could open up. Another million bucks by restructuring. Chris boswell and another and another up to four million dollars with joe. Haden sooners potential. The steelers could spend up to a eleven million dollars on outside players. That are not on this team at this current moment. How should the steelers spend the six million dollars or up to eleven million dollars is really. That's a big question surrounding us here. And now because really the steelers never needed to restructure that contract of steph onto to get t g what done so something is coming i. It really has to. Of course his team has been all in on the twenty twenty one season. The amount of void year deals put together Pushing a bunch of joe schubert's money. The newly acquired joe show bert into the future. Really what the steelers are doing is kind of pushing a little bit of the problem into the future but setting themselves up to be a significantly improved team and a team that will make a run at a title here in two thousand twenty one. So they're going right now. They're exhausting every option. They have the money they're going to spend it and really before. I continue on how they should spend that money. I know there's a lot of people saying. Oh maybe the steelers just wanna roll some salary cap over into twenty twenty two but hear me out on this. The steelers warmed to say money in two thousand twenty two. What's the point of restructuring steph onto to begin with by restructuring that money the steals are pushing cap it to next year. If they don't spend it then they effectively really haven't done anything at all. What was the point of all that. The point is to make the team better here in the future and the steelers have a significant amount of cap space. They do not normally have at this time of the year. So a couple moves that kind of makes sense for the pittsburgh steelers. Really you have to look up and down the roster quarterback the steelers have four guys that obviously they're very comfortable with and you're not finding anyone there. The running back room is stock to the gills. As is the receiver. Anti dan room. I thoroughly believe the steelers have trust in their guards and really there isn't any center that's is going to step in and kind of supply kinder- green is the guy especially here now at this point in the year the could be in the market for tackle and of course names will be something we check in a little bit later on the could be in on the tackle market. There are some free agents available such as a mitchell schwartz and they're potentially some guys available via trade so that is a spot to keep in mind defensively. The steelers are loaded on the defensive line. They're loaded on edge. They're loaded inside linebacker now they have one of if not the best free safety in the game and they have one elite corner in the joe haden and outside of that they've had some issues with the other cornerback spot which kind of seems like more of a competition than what we're expecting between camp sudden and james peer aside from that trail edmonds didn't get his fifth year option so potentially the steelers could be looking at to maybe adding to that safety room. Of course the depth spots that safety is not a strength of this team. Special teams wise. I would also say the steelers are quite loaded. So i i'm not. I'm not worried about them. Trying to find another kick returner gun or someone to run down the field. They have more than plenty of those types of guys so really the spots right now that you can kind of hone in on our either tackle spot but more namely left tackle corner and perhaps safety depth because the steelers right now. I think they're quite confident. And everything else they have on the roster but really once again the steelers have a ton of money that they still kind of put themselves in a situation to spend so something is surely coming down the pipeline. We will get into the names of the trade targets. They should be after in the second. Half of this podcast. But we're going to jump into a quick commercial break and we will be back in just a minute so stay tuned for the second. Half of the live mike. Thanks to t mobile for supporting this episode and for keeping baseball fans.

"Right that jones. His brother had character. He's god he has a he's got a motor will as thomas is. Motor runs. hot as tomlin would say that's not thought cue from the vulgar jamir jones. He was the other forty four. I was talking about. I was i was excited to see what quincy rochet would do. Based on the fact that we hadn't heard anything about this guy. I don't think alice highsmith could have done anything better than what he did. He didn't see the field in the third quarter. But i mean my goodness. he's fast. He looked strong just outstanding. And that's been moved. He did on that sack. I mean the key to a good spirit mood of as you've gotta get the offensive players hands off of you and that's not as easy to do in the nfl because his hands can can keep contact when you spend he can he can shove you in the back because you're the one who spun but the way he could just he got the the the the offensive players hands off of and spun into that it was. He just looks not that he was slow last year. He just looks so frigging fast. Didn't he don't know that's just me. I'm excited about that. I mean highsmith. That was exciting to see him. Play absolutely Tom says hi smith ended up behind. The quarterback did against a left tackle. That looked terrible in this game. I don't i mean. Maybe i i need to go back like we need to watch it again and and really take a good look at it. Is there anything else on defense day. Do you wanna talk about. And he had player or position What did you think of the late hit. It was that on. that was on bugs. I mean he put he put his. He put basically the top of his face masks. The bottom part of his in the quarterbacks chest. They're going to call that every time. You've got another going to call it that you can't do it to me. That's that's all on him. So yeah right now. I don't like it at the same time it is. You can't do that. You can't do that to me. It wasn't so much about like where he hid and it was that it was. Yeah it was a little late and it was that us using that part of his helmet you know if if somebody would have been on one side or the other he probably could have because he made he did pull off of him after he did it. But if you make contact with the helmet that's why make contact with. Your helmet nodded squareness chest the one side or the other. Then you can let up. And they're they're going to let that go. He gets her a heartbeat earlier. I don't think it's lagged. But the ball was clearly. Add his hands any hits with his helmet the way he did. They're going to call that so that they it is what it is we we do have to bring up special teams now absolutely not because i want to talk about presley harvard anymore. I do the kicking game. Like i said so chris boswell got the night off. He didn't kick the ball once an sam sloman home. I gosh i mean outside of just getting outside of giving boswell a break this guy. Good lord one for two on field goals any one for two extra points. Yeah that's the one that gets you and the one thing i made sure of because i was watching normally when the the pun team comes on. I'm like okay. i'm hidden twitter. I'm checking my notifications. I'm getting stuff ready to the site with no out boy. Big president hunting and i was also the fact that you know a lot of people were talking about him holding in haven holding. It was one of those really good. He good holder because lot of people thought that was why jordan berry suck around so long he he had good holds on every single kick. But there's an extra point field goal doesn't matter sloman. Man slew awful. Well it's funny because someone asks me on twitter like was that kick that batum like on. If you look at the kick it's not like he shanked the ball where therefore the by the spin continue to go like this is the first one like the kick around the world. That's exactly it's this is not the this is the first kick. He had that they were on the. They're on the right hash and he basically kicked vote to the right the whole time. It wasn't like it was terribly tailing off kick. It's like you didn't have the distance. He just had it. I mean i don't know if they didn't have it lined up writer. What but that's just where and that's exactly where he missed. The extra point is well. We missed it to the right but they were sitting in the middle of the field and he just brought it to the right so i think but then what was it like a forty yard that he hit year forty eight forty nine yeah But then you look at the cowboys. Kicker who is even worse than swimming. Yeah well the one. It's funny because somebody people like all that one kick was what twenty nine yards was terrible. It was blocked. It was blocked. A fifty two yarder was that looked at the state in the stadium. It's i think. I think rich added the knee jerk. Reaction article that. I don't even think he kept up ball on the screen. You know it was more than band jag in two thousand. Yeah yes but that would that would was on. I mean it didn't even you didn't even have all that much height. Granted was from what fifty yards. Fifty fifty two. So you might not get much as does the kicker right right but does the field stink. We don't know if that field the turf is any better than john. Sweetnam tearing his did rebuild the stadium at right after that incident and then the next year. They didn't play the game because the the paint that used on the turf was unsafe. So they didn't even play the game but it's it's supposedly upgraded but for that reason why said don't even places like devin bush coming back from injury. I don't wanna see him tonight. Because i don't wanna see him on that field. I just something about that field. I just yeah. I get it. Why in the heck would they still go for. That's what i want to know if there was a couple of situations where tomlin could have said. Let's go forward. Screw the field goal. Let's go forward. Why would they be aggressive there. Thank why what why. Why do you think what for the long field goal for any field goal. Slim water canoe water. Thought boj and you're going honestly. I wouldn't when they came back and gave them another long fogel. I'm like this is the preseason regular season. I don't think he's going for this year but the reason you the preseason you wanna see how the guy responds with another difficult kick now at the end of the game when they went for it down down close on fourth down with was what like two minutes left or right just is you and the steelers went for it on fourth down will. Why wouldn't you just go ahead and kick it there. Because what are you really. What are you really working on there with your kicker and your special teams unit. When you're that close all you're doing is giving him a chance to miss a gimme. you know. That's like like in golf when someone gives you a. Gimme do you put it anyway. No no you didn't. Why because what happens if you miss it. Yeah so that's why you can't do that so that's why i don't think they went for at the end because he didn't matter really bagri. All right greg. Greg gas was a good segue gives us five bucks. Thank you very much. Greg appreciated is how many neighbors. Jeff cheer for the harvard punto. The one there have been a couple. I'll be on How our new neighbourhood is very quiet by the way so they might have heard of adult. The steelers must've scored. No it was just a punt..

"The steelers special teams captain for two thousand twenty one. The question is now in the live chat. You may answer. Richest number one was there. My number one was chris boswell. So and your answer can't be nobody like you've had for number fire which i think would work so if you have your your answer andrew o. Barr says balaj. I still don't even have him on my fifty three until he shows something And really you think the steelers are going to have someone who's in their first season with pittsburgh is a captain. That's just not how to do it. Say brian brown says what she means. Derek us us pittsburgh's his mouse killebrew. I would agree with that as well. It's for what just about bellagio. That's hard for someone to make the be the team captain that first year up there Cheese ball ten says he agrees with boswell. George testing says what create assists chase. I don't see. Don't even play any specialty. Yes he actually. He played twenty seven percent of the spanish steps. Yeah he played a lotta. He played some governor. I expect though That number to go down this year not up. I do as well. That's what happens when you just like alex smith. Yes kathy. She says what. Hi cathy clarence. Washington also says what mason says balaj. Seth bow was the first one to say he's the first one. Say he says buddy johnson. Joseph pronounces buddy johnson but johnson. Honestly he might be my my bet for steelers special teams captain in two thousand nine twenty three. Yeah give him give him a couple years of the steelers. I think he's gonna play better. Tim this year but once again. I don't see the steelers having a rookie. Be a team captain. Okay richard adamson says boswell garrett slinger lynn said danny smith aka no one other words. Paul says none torna says lot of milk like. I don't even see that guy playing special teams. He just puerta. Just wanted to put that name out there. Bryan blackstock says derek. What the artist formerly known as soliver believe boy mob kennel. He says benny snell junior came. That's a good one. Okay chris pew pew. He says what he says. Happy derek will lead to happy. Tj want okay. And yeah and then some people are saying exactly what. I'm saying a rookie. Captain. these are players that i could see. Maybe down the road i i just. I don't know that this would be the rookie. Or some of those rookies. Have the opportunity to be impactful. Special teams player. But we're talking about the special teams captain going into the year. I don't see a rookie. Who to be voted on before they play a game crack. So it's not something like you have a floating captain. Were that going to go out. And they've done that in the past. The steelers did that. What was the game was was twenty. Twenty seventeen where the only had two captains yes i believe so they. They floated captains week-to-week. They didn't always announce them they had special teams captains. Just wasn't the same one. For the whole season tyler medicaid which was a special teams captain a decent number of times. I think in two thousand seventeen so but and that was only his second season. Twenty six thousand right. I think so. That's the thing that. I think they could do what you said where. It's nobody and they and they float it week to week. Okay like andrew says captain by committee. They kinda did they did. And that's not. That's uncommon that y play back in high school. We actually where we had some some like two captains every week in two captains rotated. Did that when i coached dude. When you're in high school. You wore leather helmets. I'm not at all if they were letter. How much high school. They were dinosaurs skulls. When you were nice that was we have to doubt that. Yeah so but you have could be interesting to hear what you have cows out there. He'd helped you get me good but that was pretty weak. So that's that's pretty awesome. I still say if you're if this was something you can place a wager on wwe. I'm putting my money on chris boswell. Honestly that's what he's my number one. He's been the captain before he's been with the team. I mean you realize he. He's one of the oldest players on the steelers. Yes if you're asking if you're asking me to put money on my on my ex. I'm probably put my i'm like you. I'd put money on. Baas put money on derek. What i'd put money on and nobody this we're gonna be my top. My top three vets would be those bets. This this is lifespan. I'm gonna do a little trivia with you. there bro. Ready ready one. Two three four thought. It was seven on the steelers current ninety man roster. There are seven players thirty years old or older. Can you name them. They're seven seven enron burns. Seven is one of them. Ben roethlisberger tyson. all of. He's the second oldest at thirty four bennett. Thirty nine cameron heyward cam. Heyward is one of the next two who was at thirty two cassius marsh. He's twenty nine. Okay to be close at strike restricts. Okay boswell boswell was thirty dispute a four right. That is for.

Steelers’ Perfect Season Comes to an End With Loss to Washington

"Or game tonight. The undefeated steelers hosting the washington. Football team ben. Roethlisberger and alex smith go and head to head. Second quarter all steelers early. James washington to catch the steelers while received some of the best in the business with run out the catch all been has to get the ball in their hands. They know exactly what to do with it. Fourteen nothing pittsburgh. Meanwhile from the comeback player of the year alex smith. That's the last thing we want to see bleeding profusely after being cleared. It's the other leg to quick nap. Critical moment final seconds of the first half of the clock. Ticking down. Alex smith getting sacked on a third-down play. No timeouts left the trying to run the field goal team out but the clock is going to be stopped by the officials and this may have been sneaky from alex smith. this sneaky. good better and move by. Alex realized that he doesn't have any time outs left and if they used the ball in play to probably not going to be able to get the feel law so retards off with the football. They got to stop the clock in the points. Before the you take a look. Ron rivera's yelling everybody's yelling but we're going to show it to you here. Watch alex smith again. Sneaky veteran move the official saying. Give me the ball. Alex smith is saying. I got other ideas. He takes that one himself. They have to look. He's laughing he knows. Exactly what is doing common knows what he's doing and in the end it results in three medical points. Dustin hopkins forty nine yards. It's up it's good. Fourteen three at the have a little momentum shift now oakland drive of the third smith. Watch cam simms. This might have been the biggest play for the washington football team in this game. And don't just take my word for mike. Tomlin talked about this after the game. Felt like he was a real turning point thirty yards on the catch and run a big first down in that would lead to this. How about logan thomas to the one converted quarterback out of college logan thomas with some great hands being able to get down to the one he's really turned into a professional title. They were punching in premier. So fourteen steelers fourth quarter at seventeen ten at smith. It's thomas wide open worldwide. That's a busted covers right there but don't fault the waas to football team alex smith to taking advantage of the miscues by the steelers. So we're all even now the steelers of a fourth and one on the twenty eighth. They're kick chris. Boswell is out the rookie. Matt right is there. And so mike tomlin elects to go for it a throw was to anthony mcfarland his miscue there and the washington football team takes over on downs and that leads to. This happened this catch. This is a big time catch right here by camps and being able to survive the ground one handed grab pressure situation. Can't do it any better than that. That's a big first down later in the drive. Dustin hopkins from forty five away at the first looks. It's going to hook but then it hangs and it's good to washington up twenty two seventeen but mike tomlin had used his timeouts. Well they will going to have plenty of time. But there's no time when this happens a no deflections your the game washington. Football team's defensive line. Being able to get their hands in passing lanes four passes from that group to reaper. For montesquieu it'll be no perfect season. Washington wins

Remaining College Football Bowl Games with the Most Entertainment Value

"We're gonna talk about the college bowl games because there were some this weekend. Yeah. You and the other five people that watched the ball games. I'd like to talk about what you saw. So what was your best and worst from the bowl games? We can and who won the Louisiana New Orleans. Jumble. Aia bowl. Wait. What Louisiana's you said? A lot of words Louisiana New Orleans jambalaya bowl. Well in the cure bowl. I think is what you're trying to inform. Tulane beat Louisiana forty-one twenty four, but they were a lot of turnovers caused by Louisiana fumbles. And they thought they were gonna come back. It was actually pretty close game. But to kind of spread kind of got away from them and they play excellent on the offense deciding came back from those turnovers. So they took that game. That was my only in my bowl picks. That was my only loss. I got each other, right? Like, I said I picked Utah state to beaten North Texas. A just man had on them fifty to thirteen at half. It was thirty eight to seven like this game was over by that point. And I pick Fresno state to go over Arizona state in Francis did win they were the ranked team going to that thirty one twenty. They played really well themselves state did not have their best wide receiver who declared for the draft. So we wasn't not playing this game. His his agent actually paid for him to fly to the bowl game. So he wants them play which was kinda cool Georgia Southern parallelly beat eastern Michigan twenty three twenty one. They play. It was twenty one to twenty. And then it was a going into like two minutes of the game. It was a two minute drill. Basically. They drove down the field. All right down the middle. Just getting twenty twenty art play. And they go to win the game. So that was fun to watch. I picked to win that too. And then Appalachian state against. Middle Tennessee State. But it was apple has been ranked in the AP poll knows them as the team that beat Michigan. But they were ranked this you're actually at twenty five and I picked him to win and they won against forty five thirteen. So I am five in one at the moment. Oh, well, that's so good doing great. But don't. So what's next on tap the next? Are we going to watch the tomorrow, we have a Alabama Birmingham against northern Illinois in the that? I think I'm gonna say here Bundy, Boca Raton bowl. Yes. It is the book Raton bowl. My god. These names I love him. I love these bowl games. Who'd you pick for that one? Let me check like oh picks. Actually, I will check. I have a live idea. Really? No, no, no. I I always saved. My so Frisco bowl. I oh. Well, since Birmingham, Alabama ram wasn't a school wasn't a football program. One point and then won their conference this year. I picked on to go over northern Illinois to to win the Booker Raton. Yes. And then I think Wednesday also there is a big state versus Ohio in the Frisco bowl, which I pick Senegal state to win. But Thursday's the real bowl game that everybody's excited about the band Marshall and self mowers gasp. Up south Florida versus Marshall hell is a Gasparilla bowl. Sounds like something from the eighteen hundreds. But I picked south Florida to win that one I had to pick an underdog in. Anyways fridays. Also, Toledo versus Florida international. We'll talk and. Gotta talk about Chris Boswell on this thirteen misfield goals. Searcy lucky to not be fired today. I think he's lucky that so many other kickers are so bad that he's still like stands above the rest though, like in terms of being bed. I Mason Crosby look like Robbie gold. You know, the thing with that. Is there are so many acres who have been playing absolutely terrible that he's just lucky if they were there weren't so many other terrible terrible kickers. He would not be in

Raiders craft a day to remember in a season to forget

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Raiders crafted data remember in a season to forget by an Killian, call it. The revenge of the Coliseum every raiders game in Oakland. Feels like a week these days one final farewell to the memories in the moments that have filled Oakland Raiders history with most of the recent ones being largely forgettable for much of Sunday. It looked like game thirteen of the woeful twenty eighteen season was going to be just another whole home losing affair until the Coliseum rose up and said it shall not be. So that this was raiders versus Steelers, dammit for probably the very last time in Oakland, and it was going to be memorable. So after the raiders took the lead with twenty one seconds to play on a touchdown pass from Derek Carr, Derek carrier. And after the Steelers got into position to tie the game. Thanks to a forty three yard, hook and lateral. The old building. And it seeping innards went to work. Sunday's game took place in a chilling December ground fog that cast the Coliseum in gloom slicked the cracked concrete and suck moisture to the surface of the field. It was slippery out there Oakland running back. Jalen, Richard said, I was slipping it's always slippery. Here said tight end Jared cook, Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell trotted onto the field for the game tying field goal. Try planted his left leg and as he swung back. His right to kick his plant leg gave out from under him leaving dark Divet in the grass and the raiders filled with joy the raiders had won. They beat their historic rival, Pittsburgh twenty four twenty one for just their second win at home this year and third overall in the midst of the uproarious celebration on the field head coach Jon Gruden ran down to the black hole to high five the fans, it was the type of image that all the citizens of raider nation had in there. Minds when they got the news in January the Gruden was returning to Oakland. But there's been precious little to celebrate. I went to see my old friends all grownup Gruden said we're to in ten actually three in ten after the win. I wanted to thank them. It was an awesome seen today. I appreciate their support. They've been with us. No matter what it wasn't awesome seen black and silver mixed with black and gold. There might never have been so many opposing fans in the Coliseum for raiders game. Every play resulted in a roar from about half the crowd. I was surprised raiders receiver. Seth Roberts said I didn't know they traveled like that. Oh, they do the forty Niners can vouch for that. The Pittsburgh fans whose EM was dampened when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went out with a rib injury and the offense stalled he came back in the game to orchestrate one. Go ahead. Touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. And then got the team into field goal position with. That remarkable lateral play. But then the Coliseum rose up and did its work and rothlisburger exited without having one in Oakland leaving with an Owen four record. So Big Ben what were the field conditions like out there? Terrible. He said, but we knew that coming in. I shouldn't say terrible. I'm sorry. That's the wrong word the conditions weren't ideal. But our offensive coordinator Randy Fitch ner had addressed it all week and preached it every day to the offense. He said to make sure you have the right shoes. You saw how many times guys slipped out there? I think they might have slipped even more than we did Boswell said he's been using the same cleats since he'd been in Pittsburgh with seems a little crazy given the different conditions. Every NFL field offers, you can't blame anything Boswell said. It's his bad as it is for me as it is for anyone else. The kicker slippage is not going to go down in history with the immaculate reception or other great. Moments in the history of the two teams, but it gave fans a fun outcome in a woeful season. And the woes have continued the raiders are in position for the number three draft choice who will be making the decision. There was a story Sunday morning that general manager Reggie McKenzie would be departing the team after the season all the principles MacKenzie Gruden and owner Mark Davis, no commented on the story, which wasn't exactly groundbreaking. The assumption has been from the moment Gruden arrived and only reinforced as the season has unschooled that McKenzie would be on his way out sooner or later the players who MacKenzie drafted and that Gruden traded also were in the New Sunday receiver Amari Cooper had three touchdowns for Dallas including the game winner in overtime and two hundred seventeen yards on ten catches. The Cowboys are ready to put him in their ring of honor right now and Khalil Mack helped the bears beat the Rams on Sunday night football. A spot the Steelers raiders matchup got flexed out of partially because of max increased starpower. Meanwhile, the raiders sit tied for the worst record in the league with one game left in Oakland this season and ten thousand question marks about their status next season. The building is falling down around them on Sunday night, a janitor discovered to dead mice in the soda machine. In the press box, the one that dozens of people had been using to pour their drinks all day truth what a place, but on Sunday, it gave raiders fans at least one more memorable moment. A win courtesy of the dank damp Coliseum.

Steelers fall to Raiders as Chris Boswell falls on game-tying field-goal attempt

"Go to Oakland and lose yesterday. Unbelievable. Twenty four to twenty one Chris Boswell missed an extra point. But the story of this game for a while was Ben Rothlisberger getting hurts volume. He stayed out until they started to lose. And then he goes back in. Yeah. We'll ribbon DRAM in the fact that he was back on the sidelines. Sounds like he was cleared to come in. Mike Tomlin said later that. It was the game flow that the game at the time did not allow for him to return. You know, what our interpreted the bottom line? He went into the locker room to get X. Rayed checked out comes back. He's okay. Yeah. Not a great game for an Tonio Brown. Five for thirty five. Jersey was unbelievable though. Eight thirty three touchdowns thirty three points for juju. But the real story was how would this backfield shake out yesterday? Jalen Samuels, Stephen really, the answer was an overwhelming. Jalen Samuels is the guy Stephen really found the end zone, but he had five carries for four yards. One. Touchdown. Jalen Samuels, by the way, seven catches on seven targets of sixteen point two. If James Connor MRs next week and Adam Schefter reported it's possible play. But we'll find out later on. Then you have to figure. Jalen Sanyo's is an Rb to again this weekend's the

The Dolphins' Hook and Lateral: Is it the future of football?

"Dolphins. Six ninety nine touchdown was the longest touchdown with no time left to win a game in the Super Bowl era. That's good. Okay. Is the hook and lateral. The future of football Robert Mays show twice today. Man, more teams should do it. It won one game and had the opportunity to win another. But the Steelers when forget your Chris Boswell compensate went full Steelers. Yeah. I kind of think that one of the things I've talked about when when people have asked you what the next step in football is I actually think it's kind of it's not hooking laterals. It's sort of multiple people having the ball in the backfield. And then one of them throwing almost sort of like what the saints are doing a little bit with three quarterbacks. I if you have a crappy quarterback, it's better to have three of them and just have a little Mr. action there. Princeton does that with on those option plays, and they'll actually hand it to the guy that's the option runner, and he's also a quarterback's throw it, right? But apparently when I tweeted about the hook 'em out bit. Some people say the guy coach calorie the guy who doesn't punt who's famous for not punting. His thing is hook him are actually the next step in football. And actually, I had a role a thing as far as you're going to say, it's the same thing. Yeah. I've never I've never used that phrase hook and lateral before the Wikipedia says hook and lateral sometimes referred to as hook and ladder. But it's called hook and lateral. The Wikipedia I've never said hook and lateral in my life. It's a regional thing. It's like pop verse coke there you go. I just said, you you say, and you firmly believe that was the that was the term. I was like, okay. Well. I wasn't going to come in on shore. Good for you, buddy. I do any research. I appreciate that. I've always had hooking ladder. Maybe that's just the varsity blues influencing the way, I talk about football. Well, it's all. It was it was nuts. I mean, the play was insane. It was absolutely crazy. I even watch in real time. It was too hard to process. I mean, you have gronkowski back there. I guess to prevent a hill. Mary. And then the last thing you want with the guy who can't move that. Well, being your last line of defense happens. Right. So rob gronkowski is not the guy who went back there. That's so he's not Earl Thomas, I think we learned that today or. Or like Julio's defended those plays pretty pretty well in the past. Knocking those Johnson Calvin John yet. Yeah. Calvin Johnson has been a great great last play guy. But they knew they knew it was going to be a hook out excuse me, hook him out. All they said that the I mean you had to it would've been a seventy seventy yards in the air is capable for half the quarterback. Just not Ryan tannehill. Heff the quarterbacks might be strong. But yeah, I mean, I bet I bet a lot of them could throw seventy yards in the air.
