"I trust him about what he does and then be behind Ward manual because I love Michigan. If Ward needs a GPS signal from the big house to Ford Field, just Oh, Chris Berman wants a breakdown. Kevin Fields. I think Chris listens on our facility in 12 70 Detroit weekdays at three. Feel free to call me during the holidays. I got Some down time Doug scheme. You can hear him with Chris Ballas on the Wolverine football podcast at the wolverine dot com. Former Michigan offensive lineman like I said Five time. Big 10 Jamba. How many? How many college players Doug? Have you ever looked it up or just Googled yourself? Because everybody's Google themselves. Have you ever Googled yourself and said how many college football players have ever been a five time conference champion? I have not done that. I've done it on Lee in relation to Michigan. OK? How many missiles and five time champions are in Michigan. My knowledge. There was one class that did it, and it was our class 1988. We were We were there, and every year we were the everyone that big tent, so there's There's 14 guy. Wow, that stayed for 1/5 year. So the mind knowledge unless I'm wrong, and I'm not a Michigan football historian, and I just went back to the old media guides and what's available online? It was only one class that went through and 14 guys to ever do it to get a big 10 title every year. And I was part of that. So it's Yeah. It's pretty cool to say I was a part of that. In in, You know, I think in the in the course of history and looking back on it, it's given me for some perspective on some things. It's certainly taught me a lot of things. But when I talk about Michigan football and in balance, and I talked about this a lot of our podcast, I always framed my references. So what? I was taught the expectations that I had placed upon me with my classmates when we were there, which oh, by the way, produced five Big 10 championships. So when we look at Michigan football now, and I start talking about things that I see that either are or are not working. That's in what its relations which what it's relating to is that the formula that worked for decades that sham back or had built the modern era of Michigan football into is what me and my classmates benefit from and what we so desperately want for today's players. We want them to win championships. Doug. I'm gonna work with the College Football Hall of Fame. Where was that? I think that it moved to Atlanta from South Bend. Or is it still in Atlanta? I'm not sure. And we're not gonna get going with directions right now and how to get well, no e think why we go to south bed. You go down 80 92 Toledo would come back West. In Atlanta. God knows you want to drive to Atlanta during the holiday season, when cars are backed up from Tennessee to Georgia. I think that group of 14 belongs in the College Football Hall of Fame. Whoever it is, he used to be in South Bend. It might be in Atlanta. Who knows It's somewhere in between. It's in the smoky mountains. I know the 14 of us were lucky enough. I'm gonna get you into the hall of fame. I'm serious. I'm gonna I'm gonna call that number. Write them a letter there. There are 14 guys who have been five time conference football champions. You belong in the Hall of Fame and the movie 14 will come out. I'll be the director and we'll put you in jail will put you in charge. I will. I will. I will write a letter. It's the least I could do, or at least an email. Or maybe I'll just drop it off. Because if I want to go to South Bend from Grand Rapids, what I do is I go through Toledo down to Cincinnati back over the Indian back up to South man. Well, you missed Chicago. Well, No, I'm taking the scenic route. OK, Doug, we love you, my friend. Bill. Thanks for having me It's always fun and happy New Year Be safe out there have have a good time. You know you too, buddy. We'll talk soon. All right. Bye. "I think Woodson Be a lock. I don't know. If Megatron is I You know, but the respect is there just like for Berry. I still I look at Megatron and very and between them. One playoff when Calvin Johnson the best athletic specimen, not the greatest wide receiver. I mean, tougher. Never Won a playoff game. Was part of a winning team. Not even a home playoff game. So between Barry and Calvin. You were the best ever at their position. One playoff win between them. Yeah, Amazing. We'll talk about Michigan and Penn State College football this weekend. Chris Ballas for the wolverine dot com The Michigan Insider. He was joining us on the draft Kings gas sign. Hi doing, Chris? Hey, Billy. Doing great, buddy. You think what sin is? Ah, is in the Hall of Fame. This is without doubt s O the records that he sent it. That's what he said at that position and how he changed it. Now he made an impact. The day he got there and with different teams. I don't think there's any question he's a lock and a very well deserved honor. Hopefully, hopefully hopefully we'll be able to have these receptions here. If the virus gets under control, where they can honor these guys in person to man's getting old watching these things from afar. I'll tell you that I'm looking at locks of Peyton Manning Woodson. Maybe Jared Allen help putting that mixes a lot, possibly bacilli. Maybe Leroy Butler. I don't know about Megatron D Thank you. There could be some love for him just because he was so damn good. Yeah, And I think that's you know, it's not his fault that he plays for the crappiest organization in the history of empty. That's what I said about the death. We must be honest man. It's like the luck of the draw on and you know, like, guys cringe when they find out they're going to the Detroit Lions on draft day, you know, so I hate to say it, but it's a fact that guy was outstanding. He'll be in there. I don't know if he'll be a if you get in this time or what, but eventually he'll be He'll be in there and he deserves to be. Yeah. So I look at that. If he gets in, I know would sit in man in our mind, you know, surefire locks and well known, said in February It's move on. Let's talk about this Michigan football team against winless Penn State it It's the chance to kind of put together a win streak. You know, back to back after holding on to get Rutgers but also if they would lose two winless Penn State. Here comes more heat on hardball. Yeah, and there are two point favorite for a reason. Penn State's got some talent. They're kind of like Michigan. They've got talent, but they don't play together. They've had some major injury.

"The zone. That's right. Four o'clock our Jamie with the day off Matt. Ms Lerner's here. I'm Dennis 50, and we'll get back to your calls coming up in a half hour right now, let's talk with Chris Ballas. A senior editor of the Wolverine magazine, and he joins us right now on W T. K. Chris, How are you on this Monday? Hey, Dennis doing great, brother. Yeah, well, I know the Nebraska thing unravels the chancellor President, you know Friday, he was like, Yeah, it'll be early next week and then hey, was wrong. He dropped on on Saturday, but What'd you think when you if you got the first glance, what was what was your first thought when you saw the big 10 schedule? My first. But first of all, I figured maybe somebody from the brass core Ohio State would break the news like that right? Because those are the ones that have been pining to play, and I wrote a column today, man there I had three thoughts about it. Everybody is complaining about their draws, and you look at Michigan all we have to play then So do we have to play Wisconsin. So on and so forth here, the fan base and Those two teams. Dennis were on the schedule anyway, and that's what people are feeling to realize a 12 game schedule. Michigan was going to have to go to Minnesota in front of a bunch of fans. Rabid fans, You know, it's not like it used to be in the past, PJ Flex Got that team going up there. And and then play in Wisconsin at home. You're gonna have to do that, too, and Michigan's had very nice success against Wisconsin. So that's not a big deal to me. Then everybody was complaining about Ohio State, and they're easy schedule again. Those two teams were on Ohio State schedule anyway. Yeah, They dropped the home game with Iowa, where they probably would have been favored by 17 or 18 points anyway, not a big deal to me. And then Nebraska got what they deserved, buddy. Okay, I looked at it. And the squeaky wheel gets the oil And in this case, man. Ah, again. Those were teams that were on their schedule, so I'm not sure what they're complaining about it. I'm just I'm just happened at football and I think a lot of people feel the same way. You know, it's not the same when you're watching Arkansas State at Kansas State is when you're looking to see which teams are squaring off in the big 10 and how it's going to affect the race. And you know what's the seven o'clock or the eighth o'clock game? Do we get to watch Penn State in Iowa tonight? After we're done writing so Ah, And then I also thought, Dennis, that man, there's no margin for error here, buddy. If if there's gonna be games, postpone those games are going to be cancelled. There's no bye week. Now You've got nine weeks to get in nine games, and you're not postponing anything, so I think it's still There's going to be an asterisk by this year, and it's gonna be the team that stay the healthiest that play all eight of their games. They're gonna have a legitimate chance here at the playoff, even though we pretty much realized that there's one team from the big 10 that has the best chance, and that's probably Ohio State. Yeah, well, I'm not taking up for Ohio State. That would be the last thing that I would do. But you know, if Michigan would have come out, they would have Ah, sign of Northwestern and in Illinois, I'd rather have Ah, more intriguing games of the two teams that tied for the The Big 10 West last year and You do want to give the best chance in his one ofthe year of the team that is favored to win the conference? The best chance of making the college football playoff so Even if they did help him out. It's understandable, knowing that all the teams get to split the revenue. So hopefully one day when Michigan's in that spot hopefully we're not in a situation where it's a pandemic in. But if there's a chance that they can Give him the best opportunity that they would do the same thing, And I would think so. It's hard, though, when you're you're looking out for 14 teams and what's best for the conference. Of course you're gonna have Individual schools. They're going to say, Well, what about us? And it's I think it's ah, it's ah reflex. That's understandable by by Michigan fans. Yeah, I grew that, too. And you know, but first and foremost and needs. You know the TV revenue, for example, Look at Fox. They want good matchups to you Look at Michigan. Will we heard last year was Michigan in Nebraska? After they get Wisconsin off the schedule Michigan in Nebraska, which is considered enough start team under Scott Frost until they had a tough year last year. But you know, a lot of people expect on the bounce back, and Scott Frost has proven he's a great coach. We're going play six years in a row, and that's what people want to see, man. They don't want to see Michigan go into Illinois, and that's not going to draw TV ratings, either. You know they want to see the Michigan's in the Nebraska. Wisconsin is the Ohio State's and things like that. So AH, flat out. Michigan draws viewers and you're going to see more and more that it's just the way it is. So it's the way it's been, really, if you look at it over the last 20 years. How many times has Michigan for example, gone to, you know, say, Northwestern Purdue compared to playing with having Wisconsin on the schedule or or having a Nebraska on the schedule? It's waited in one direction, and I think A lot of that is probably in part for television. I don't think there's any question about it..

"Talking about Michigan football. Hope they play the winter season. That would be my pick. Looking at everything I'd take January February March Big 10 Championship game on the march. Then who cares? I mean, With no fans. Here is one thing. It doesn't have to be Saturday games. They could play Monday night Football in January. February, You know, Big 10 Monday night football Seriously. There's when, when the playoffs get to the Monday night Football ends on December 1st week in January. Whenever the playoffs started, you could play Monday night. You know, Tuesday night. Who cares what day you play right? It wouldn't matter And like I said earlier, I'll be glued to it and the other Thing is, I thought I just had you know, January February March here in Michigan is Bill. Is it safe to say it's not the most pleasant time of the year to live here? They're going to use domes were going to use the use Lucas Oil, though, use a Ford field. They got the dome's covered throughout the Midwest that they could use. They'll have the facilities will be indoor football, and it'll be weird NFL stadiums for quote unquote home games, whatever, but just me personally. January. February March is not necessarily my most favorite time of the year and having football the big 10 season in the middle of that, But certainly a let me and the rest of the folks that don't love the winter. All that great. Certainly make my winter a little more entertaining and fun to get through. I kind of like that idea, and there could be and I tried to step back and analyze this without over analyzing it. But if the other three conferences go and yes, you're not going to go the college football playoff and realistically, the only team I thought they had a shot at the National Championship for college football playoff. Would be Ohio State. So that's the honest opinion there. So if you're the big 10 and you're showcased January, February and March on, especially after the NFL ends a Superbowl scheduled first week of February, you'll have a month 5 to 6 weeks. If it's a winter schedule, where you'll be the only football on You'll be the only football on anywhere. And so that means sports gambling which has evolved immensely. Yeah, you have the tournament. But like I said, they could get into Mondays and Tuesdays playing games at night when there are no and double tournament games coming from Yeah, absolutely. It would be like ascended. There'll be no shortage of interest. No, and we will be glued to the television watching this. It would just be weird, but it's that time of year and then it's just these league games. And you know, after the Super Bowl, we all have this collective football, deep breaths and exhale, right. We just got through all this. And yet there's going to be six more weeks of big 10 football going on. It's gonna be like this sort of strange. Spring football televised. You know, where does this fall in is this is the 2021 season is 2020. It's It's obviously going to be really strange and weird, but I don't care. I will be watching and millions of other big 10 football fans will be watching too, because we love our teams. His name is Doug Scheme, and I agree with everything you just said during the course of this interview, he's on the wolverine dot com podcast with Chris Ballas. He also is a former Michigan offensive lineman. Big 10 champion resides on the east side of the state and Scheme Land, which is located just north of Oakland County Scheme land. It's a beautiful place where everyone is like the majestic where everybody's happy all the time. Nobody's sick. There's no pandemic. There's football every weekend. It's a magical place scheme when I love it. Doug always appreciate your time. My mam. We will stay in touch and who's going to be your adopted team and the guy's palaces said he said he had to think about it. If there's no Michigan football this fall, no big 10 football who will be your adopting college football team you'll cheer for. I have to go to one of my all time favorite great. College football players, one of my heroes when I was coming through high school and pick his school, and that would be war Eagle auburn for Bo Jackson. I love that guy had been picking an SEC school. I'll be interesting. I know. Maybe Clem are all gonna be front runners go with somebody who's gonna have a great year. And that would be fun to watch that be the easy thing to do, though. Bill that be easy. I don't know. I've always I've always loved Bo Jackson. I follow him on Twitter he's still leading in his life. He does today, helping people I just thought I think the world of him and and so therefore, I guess I'll have to eat. If you make me pick. I'm gonna pick Auburn May because of Casey, my saw the future Tigers Ace is also out of Auburn. No, I I'd want to pick asleep or somebody who could shock the college football world, So I'll have to look into that. Doug. Appreciate your time. "I love this guy from the start of his pro career out of eastern Michigan University, suck around. Pick back in 1988. Wow. Man. He's 54. I'm 58. I'm feeling old right now. Grant Long joins us on the road show across Michigan height. Do my man May I am doing great considering all things with world alive of what else can I say? I won't go up this morning. I'm good. I'm great. Well, what's been the craziest thing for you navigating this pandemic? Missing all of my friends just having that contact with day to day. Ah, about a big O guys actually like to get out and be with my friends. I do think with them, So I'm missing a lot of that. And secondly, obviously a lot of You know, I played ball just about every day and I haven't played since late march. And it's uh this is goingto probably thrust be into retirement inside it, but I was tired from the NBA. Yeah, we we know that, but I was playing pretty pretty regularly. You know, just pick up games at the local rec center with guys that I know. But man, it's been. It's been three months now and now I don't feel like I want to play. I don't know if I can't play. I don't want to run up and down the court for its kind of stuff, so it's probably going to Sydney into my second stage of retirement. Well, the MBA eyes holding off on retiring the season. They're going to do the bubble That's gonna start about the end of the month. Where you at on this bubble concept, and how do you think it will play out? I have not been on board with it from the word go simply because we were now correct way, have three months into this pantomime right somewhere around a little bit longer. Now that we're pushing into the fourth month Okay, So with that being said, if you ask once ago or nationally stay, Are we any closer to a cure or vaccination? Everything. Anybody with any sense would have to say no. So why? What would get you the city? They would be okay to gather all of his players together in one place and think that you could keep them safe. There's no way possible that you could tell that there is no indication that everything should go back. The way it was prior to the parents living like there's no, There's been no vaccine. There's been no nothing. So what's the signal that says OK, now we don't have to practise social distancing on the basketball court. I don't understand what this knowledge is coming from. Commissioner Store or Adam? Silver Runner would say. Okay, let's play basketball Now. In this bubble, it won't contain everybody there. But hey, did you hear that You could actually Not just positive and still be a curator of this and still transport. He could have atypical and not having symptoms and get steel. You transfer this virus, But where is the safety of all these players coming into gold and I don't see it, so I'm not forward, but if that's what they want to do, that's what they want. They get three weeks I'll be curious to see how many players opt out between now and the start of resuming play. Down in Orlando and Grant before I let you go. I did want to look back at the palace for you, and it's going to be imploded tomorrow. They're in Auburn Hills in the Detroit metro area. What's the moment for grant long at the palace? I got a couple of moments. First of all, I mean, I cut my teeth as an MBA player at the palace when I came back from, you know about my first year in 1988 to come back and play in front of the whole hotel. My family at the palace. That was huge that with my whole town justice and I'm playing in that arena that I went, went on watch so many games at along at the Silverdome, as will sort of be able to play in my first year in the NBA. You should play in that palace. It holds memories for me now open on what? I became a piston, and we beat the Chicago Bulls there on a Sunday afternoon. That's probably right up there at the top with me is one of my best memories that palace Yeah, well, it's the best concert just as a fan that you went to at the palace that you you still say That's one of the best shows I've ever seen. Well, it's twofold because the the best concert I went to at the palace with Luther Vandross, who went there. And on top of that, after the concert was over. I got a chance to meet with him. Go back to the clean Way, said No. He and a few other people for about 25 30 minutes with him. So that was a great experience at that. Confident at the palace. I got good on, you know, like Whitney he could own whether it's Ah room with 500 people or 50,000 people he could. He could own that room because of his voice. Amazing, absolutely, absolutely was tremendous grand, long, former piston 15 year MBA career man. Appreciate your time here in the healed show across Michigan, if you get a chance we're now on weekday afternoons, three until six on AM 12 70 in Detroit. But you you alright?
