"Games since the all star break and has 21 homers, okay? 42 games for judge 21 homers gives an OPS of about 1300 in those games. A couple days ago, I texted Aaron Boone and said, boy, how about the way judge performing during this slide for you guys? And he sent back one word, incredible. And then I sent him back another one yesterday after home run number 54 and boonie texted back amazing. That has to be part of this conversation too, yes? Yes, buster. What's the note? He scored every run in a series for the Yankees over the weekend. The last guy to do that was Babe Ruth in 1929, okay? And I'm telling you, the voters remember the last thing that they see. Remember Chipper Jones in 1999, how he went absolutely ballistic down the stretch, took the metal part by himself. He deserved the MVP anyway, but he wanted because of what he did the last month of the season. We remember the last thing that we saw. And people are looking to judge saying, the Yankees are a one man team right now. They can't score any runs unless he drives them in or scores them. And that's why I think he's going to get extra credit points because we're going to look and say, they were this close to losing that lead, but Aaron judge said, no, we're going to win this division. If they win the division, I think he's going to win the MVP. I mentioned a good indication for the Saint Louis Cardinals. Last night, Jack flaherty in a loss than the Washington Nationals allowed one run in 5 innings, 6 strikeouts, one walk, and this was the important number for me, Tim, his velocity at 96 97 mph. What do you make of that? Well, it's very encouraging for the Cardinals who become an even better team if that's the Jack flaherty we're going to see in October. And if he continues to pitch even better and instead of going 5, he goes 6, 7, 8, even 9. Buster, we can't forget. You did a bunch of his games when he was at his very best. That guy is amazing. Adam Wainwright told me once. He said, if you want to build a picture of what a baseball player should look like, it would look like Jack flaherty. I mean, his athletic ability is off the charts as far as Duncan a basketball and doing whatever it takes to be a ballplayer and an athlete. He's got all of that. Imagine adding him to a cardinal team that catches it as well as it does has MVP candidates at first and third base has found a way to score some runs and has other pretty darn good pitching on their team. Jack flaherty would be like adding, it's not Jacob degrom, but like adding Jacob de Grom to the stretch run if he can be healthy and ramp up those innings. Yeah, as you know, he was part of that trio of major leaguers who played on the same high school team. Lucas giolito max free, Jack flaherty. And what do you think Katz told me? Who was his pitching coach Danny? Now he's the pitch and coach the White Sox was that when Jack was in high school, he was a third baseman and they had to convince him to be a pitcher. Because he just loved playing third base so much and I'm not totally convinced that if he had just remained at third base, he could have made the big leagues in that way. And that's because of the great athlete that he is. Right. And freed told me, by the way, that when flaherty was a sophomore, he said, he's the greatest high school pitcher I've ever seen. That's what max fried said about Jack flaherty when he was a sophomore in high school. All right, so here's the easiest question of the day besides the Harry Styles question, okay? Who's going to win the American League central? That's impossible. I do the playoff look every single day and my little notebook here. Where we are, I'm going to say, I'm going to say the guardians are going to win the central. I have no good reason why other than I love their starting pitching. I love Bieber. I love Tristan McKenzie. I think if they could get a couple pictures healthy, I think they can pitch their way in. That doesn't mean the twins can't win, and it also doesn't mean the White Sox can't win. You made me choose somebody. So I'm going to pick the guardians, but I don't have a good reason because that's how close this race is going to go. Three teams to the final week for sure. Okay, I'm going to pick the White Sox because I want to salvage the preseason pick that I turned in. I would have abandoned 50 times because they were so disappointing and yet because there really aren't any great teams in the division, the White Sox are kind of hanging in there and oh, by the way, they get the potential American League cyan award winner, Dylan cease, Lance Lynn, look pretty dang good yesterday. They got a lot of Johnny cueto's pitch 12. They got a lot of talent on that team, which is why everyone's been scratching their head about their performance so far this year. Right. Lancelot's last four starts. He's got an ERA just over one. Johnny cueto has been ridiculously good for a guy who was supposed to be at the back end of the bullpen. And Dylan sees almost pitching no hitter the other day. So I'm with you then. The white sucks of course can win the division. So can the twins. I had to pick somebody. So I picked the guardians tomorrow. I'll change my mind because that's how much that division changes day to day. All right, Tim. Thanks for doing this. And yeah, just text me your thanks whenever you see that Harry Styles video, okay? Oh, I can't, I can't wait. I won't know which one is Harry Styles and which one is Chris Pine. I won't even know who's who until I see the spit or whatever it's called.

"And just reading from a press release here, I haven't seen the broadcast yet, obviously, but supposedly it will incorporate new on screen graphics that include innovative new probabilities based forecasts of different situational outcomes. So not just when expectancy, I guess, but maybe what are the odds of something happening at this particular time, which I think I've seen that before, but not for a while, and then they're also going to have highlights in life lookings, from other games, and then on screen call outs about batters walk up songs from Apple music, just some corporate synergy there. I guess you can identify what the walk up songs are. We're gonna make my iPhone talk to them. Hate this. Oh yeah, 'cause then it says test their knowledge of baseball trivia with help from Siri. And in a first for MLB games Friday night baseball will feature rules analysis and interpretation from former MLB umpire Brian Gorman, which is interesting. I mean, that's a staple of NFL broadcasts, for instance. I don't know whether we need that in MLB broadcast, which is, I guess, why we haven't had it up to this point. I would think that a lot of games, I don't know that Brian Gorman would have that much to say about rules analysis and interpretation, especially if the umpires are now addressing the crowd and the people at home on the mic when something happens with a replay. How often would an empire really have anything substantive to add? I'm pyres are interesting. I'm interested to hear from umpires happy to hear from them. But maybe we should have umpires in the booth just full time as analysts like, why not? We have former players former umpires could be interesting, but yeah, there aren't that many times that I'm watching a game and I'm thinking, I wish a former MLB umpire were there to explain this to me. I guess if you get the right game, then it could be great if it happens to be one with some kind of controversial or cryptic call, but most of the time, yep, he was out because he beat the throw to the bag there and he was not tagged and therefore he was safe. I mean, I don't know that there's all that much to add in most instances. Yeah, it doesn't seem like there's going to be a lot of variability of use there. And it's weird to do it now when we have the umps explaining replay review on the field. Like, isn't this the least useful time to do this? Because we were getting better rules explanations in game. Yeah, that seems odd. I was surprised that the during the NCAA tournament, they had gene territory doing reviews in basketball. And he was a football guy famously, so I don't know. I feel like the former official input into game still has some optimization. Right, yeah. All right, so a little bit of news before we wrap up. So we had extensions. We had non extensions. We also had some Ronald Acuna comments about Freddie Freeman that caught a lot of attention here, Acuna was doing an interview and sounds like there's no love lost between those two or they're just wasn't really any love or relationship to begin with other than the fact that they were on the same team Acuna was asked what he would miss about Freeman and he said nothing. He basically said that they didn't talk that they were workplace proximity associates. They played for the same team in the same stadium in the same Clubhouse, but other than that, it sounds like they didn't interact a whole lot and Acuna. Also seems to be holding a bit of a grudge over Freeman doing some enforcing. It seems like of standards and anti rookie rules early in Acuna's career kind of upholding the way we play and this is the way we look kind of thing, which Freeman, I mean, we think of him as a friendly and personable person. He certainly comes off that way and seems that way. He was also kind of taken under the wing of Brian McCann and Chipper Jones and sort of the old school right way to play type Atlanta players. And so Freeman said, you know, he responded to Acuna's comments and he said, he misses Acuna and loves Acuna. He also did kind of cop to being the Clubhouse police and basically said like, well, the organization had some standards about where you wear your eye black or how far down your face it goes and that kind of thing. And so it sounds like he was one of the people talking to Acuna as the upstart rookie hey that's not how we do things or how we wear things or whatever with the braves. It's not necessarily that he was giving him grief about bat flips or whatever, but it sounds like there was a culture clash there, which is maybe not unexpected given the different places they come from, the different ages, like, I don't know that I expected them to be besties or anything. But still, it's notable just because when a player leaves a team after being there for a long time, especially a player with the standing of Freeman, generally former teammates will be like, oh yeah, he's the best going to miss him, et cetera, et cetera. It's just kind of a courtesy. Whether they really mean it or not. And the Cunha was just not going to play that game. So those comments made the rounds. Yeah, I hope that there can be some reflection why I hope there can be two bits of reflection. The first is that we are all well served to probably remember that we don't have a great sense of, or we might not always have a great sense of like what the dynamics between players are and how this stuff is litigated and we should just, you know, be mindful that we're not, we're not in the Clubhouse. And so, you know, we don't want to assume good things were bad things about guys based on what we think we know, but I also hope that there's some self reflection on the part of guys in Freeman's place where it's like, yeah, maybe you think you're helping out because you're trying to help a younger player understand sort of like the how we do things of a Clubhouse, but you're also in a position where you can be like, we have this young dynamic player and he's super exciting and like what he's doing and the way he plays the game isn't harming anyone and inspiring a.

"And I'm joined as always by Ben Lindbergh of the ringer. Ben, how are you? I'm doing well, a little relieved to reach the end of an eventful week. Apologies to Tyler Anderson and Luke Voight, but there haven't been any additional huge moves that we have to discuss today, although we did get a few tidbits about deals that we already discussed. Apparently, a significant chunk of Freddie Freeman's contract with the Dodgers is deferred over 2028 through 2040, which is not unusual for the Dodgers, but evidently brings the real value of the deal down to about a 140 million, which is basically what the braves were reported to have offered him over 5 years instead of 6, so makes it even more curious, really. We talked about that a little last time with the different tax rates in Georgia and California and how he ended up not really making much more money than he would have by taking that brave still. Seems like if anything, he may have made less in present day dollars. So that whole situation, it's just surprising that it played out that way. And there's a big buster only feature about it in which Freeman is not quoted, but Chipper Jones is extensively quoted and other sources and really sounds like this was not what Freeman set out to do or necessarily wanted to happen in things just played out this way. Yeah, I mean, well, I guess we should say like Chipper Jones also works for the priest. Yes, he does. There's that to consider. I mean, I think that Freeman had been pretty clear from the jump that he wanted 6 years. I know that the deferral kind of complicates how we interpret that, but it sounds like he wanted 6 and Atlanta never offered him that. They didn't really reach out that extensively over the off season prior to the lockout or even in the days following it. So I don't know man he gets to decide where he wants to go and if feeling like he was in demand was important to him and he felt badly about not being offered that 6 year and he felt like he should have been maybe treated differently. Like I can't begrudge him that I don't know. The whole TikTok of this is like not super interesting to me. I think it's interesting from the braves perspective because you had this franchise icon and you had to make a decision about whether you wanted to retain him. I think the fact that they did not try to do that more aggressively before they knew for sure they could trade for Matt Olson is weird? Yeah. One thing in that story, it sounds like that deal came together incredibly quickly. Cut off talks with Freeman and then suddenly and thoughtless just like text that Billy beans what do we have to give you for bed also? And then that came together very quickly and then the extension came together even more quickly. So yeah, no one knew that it was going to work out that way. It's just like the 6th year it seems like it was mostly a principle thing maybe. He felt like he deserved a 6 year I understand why and the praise for whatever reason we're not willing to go there as it turned out I don't know that he ended up making more money with the 6 years than he would have with the 5 year offer he had on the table but as we discussed previously like it all worked out fine from a lot of perspectives, the braves got a great first baseman. Freddie Freeman got a good deal and gets to go to a good team near his hometown, so it all worked out okay, it's not a disaster or anything, but it just doesn't seem like either party really saw things playing out this way right up until the moment when it actually happened. Yeah, it is fascinating in that respect but yeah, what a weird bit of business. And the other detail that came to light. So according to Patrick Saunders, Denver post beat writer for the rockies, Chris Bryant contract does not contain an opt out clause, it does as was previous reported contain a no trade clause. So Chris Bryant can not opt out of the rockies and the rockies can not opt out of Chris Bryant. So we'll see if this lasts he did say that he plans to be there for the full 7 years. I would imagine that everyone who signs a contract probably plans to be there. But sometimes those plans go awry, but it will be tough for each side to extricate themselves from the situation. Hopefully the need won't erase. Also, there was a press conference, I guess, and he was introduced and he was asked whether the rockies could contend for the playoffs and he says, of course, and he noted I have never been on a losing team in my big league career, which is debatable because he was on the 2021 cubs and that was a losing team in fairness to him. I guess they were only three games under 500 when they actually traded him. And he didn't finish the year with them. So he could say, well, maybe we would have been a winning team if I had been there all year and they hadn't traded everyone. So I guess that kind of counts. But what else is he going to say? I mean, when you ask the new acquisition, can this team contend? Well, yeah, of course they're going to say that. And maybe they actually believe it. But we talked yesterday about how maybe winning or being on the best team would not be the number one item on our wish list or our top criterion when deciding where to go. And we don't know how Bryant values that, but I didn't know yesterday that I mean, he already kind of had the best possible outcome for winning. He won a World Series. The most exciting World Series that he possibly could have won. He was 24 years old. He wanted MVP that year. He broke the cubs curse, even got an assist on the World Series anything play. So I don't know whether that means he feels like, well, I checked off that box and now I can just go where I want to play and where I make money and where I'm happy, or whether that gives you a taste for winning and it's like, oh, this is just what it's going to be like. From now on and I want to recapture that I but there's no way that you can top that probably to win a World Series for the cubs after forever and do it as a start player with the organization you came up with. I mean, even if he had gone somewhere, if he had gone to some other team that was more likely to win a World Series over the life of this deal, I don't know that the thrill of that could compare to the first time for him. So that makes it even less essential in my mind. Again, don't know whether he thinks of it that way, but that's how I would be thinking of it. Yeah. Yeah, I think a lot of the, he is such an interesting sort of case in that regard because I would imagine that if you were to sort of chart their trajectory of how much you care about being able to win versus not in a good player's career that the longer you're in the league without having one, the more winning matters to you, right? I bet, oh, this is such a sad example, but I bet if you had asked like 2015 Felix Hernandez does winning matter to you, he would have been like, yes. I very much like to win, right? And he had such a bright start to his career both in terms of the personal accolades that he accrued and the success of his team. And so I wonder for him if he's not going to say in the press conference, we're not going to win. Like that, you know, he's not going to say that, but he might be kind of clear eyed about what the road is to the rockies contending and be sort of at peace with that being a bit more winding than it might have been if he had gone to other teams because of that early career success, both as I said personally and then within the context of the cubs. So I don't know, he's an interesting test case..

"The six ted williams in the seven hole and yogi berra in the whole sandy. Colfax was the pitcher for the old timers. It is dodger versus dodgers year at dodger. Stadium are not dodger stadium. It's actually the polo grounds because the old timers were in this game now. This game ended one to nothing. There were four hits by the young guns three hits by the old timers and the lone run scored in the top. Half of the first mike trout was able to get a leadoff single off of off of colfax then chipper jones smoked a line drive single to left field and mike. Trout was able to go from first to third then berry bonds. Hit a deep fly out to right field and might shout his able to score chipper jones then gets caught stealing at albert pools grounds out but that was the game. That was ju. It's in the one run. Came across four clayton. Kershaw he goes. Nine innings gives up three hits walked six batters but also strikes out. Six doesn't give up an earned run for the old timers and sandy colfax. He goes nine. Innings gives up just four hits one earned run walks only three but strikes out eight vac but three of those where clayton kershaw so like. I don't know how like off of that is like sadie. Kofax only struck out once the against kershaw. So we'll see. I know that's that's interesting but that's today's show for you guys. "All right so where we just left off guys. We had a one to one tie so the old timers tied it up at the in their last home game or their second home. Game to tie the series at one heading dodger stadium for the young guns so the old timers versus the young guns in this one. The old timers are throwing christy. Mathewson christy mathewson. This year had a like sub one five era. Like in the year. That i picked of him. And then you have clayton kershaw on the other side of mound and for the old timers. It is ty cobb in left field. Pete rose at second base mickey mantle center lou. Gehrig at first babe ruth in right eddie mathews at third base yogi berra catching honest wagner. Is the eighth hitter at shortstop for the old timers now for the young guns. This game chipper jones at third base. There's not too many third baseman on this team. Now i didn't really actually. I don't think. I ever put a rod at third and jeeter short. So i'm pretty sure that primarily used chipper jones for the young guns on at third base but might trout was playing left field batting second in this game and barry bonds was in the three hole in right field mark maguire at first base buster. Posey in the five full catching ken. Griffey junior hitting six robinson can no hitting seventh and alex rodriguez at shortstop at the eighth hole and clayton kershaw actually ended up pitching. One heck of a ballgame in here chrissy. Matthiessen did as well. But kershaw gets ty cobb groundout. Pete rose groundout strikes out mickey mantle then chrissy matthiessen comes into the ball game and chipper jones singles. Two left centerfield mike. Trout gets an infield single to the shortstop. Everybody's safe everywhere. And barry bonds walks on four straight. bring up mark. Maguire with no outs. Now mark maguire. And it's a two run. Single to left center field and mike trout and chipper jones score to nothing young guns then buster posey flies out to deep left field but barry bonds able to go from second to it from second to third. Then kim griffey junior hits into a six four fielder's choice but barry bonds is able to score and ken griffey juniors on first base with robinson cano up but unfortunately for the young guns or fortunately for the old timers robinson keno grounds out to first base to end the inning. Then in the top. Half of the second lou. Gehrig's strikes out swinging the babe ruth takes ball four to get the first runner on for the old timers. Then eddie mathews grounds one to center field but it gets through and babe. Ruth is able to go from first to third despite a really good throw by ken. Griffey junior in center field then after that. You have yogi. Berra flying out to center field. No runner goes from third. Everybody stays where it's at and then honest wagner grounds out to first base to end the top half of the second nothing going on for the young guns. Is alex rodriguez strikes out. Kershaw lines out and chipper jones flies out to deep right center field then in the bottom half of the third inning. Sorry top third. I actually you have christy. Mathewson flying outs left field than ty cobb doubles indus. Right centerfield beat rose grounds out the second but does a job and ty cobb advances to ring up mickey mantle with two outs and mickey mantle hit a deep fly ball to left field but it is retired for outnumber three after the top of three. It is reading nothing. Still young guns for the young guns might trout barry bonds and mark. Maguire go down in order and in the top half of the fourth. It was much of the same for the old timers with gehrig striking out. Babe ruth lining out and eddie mathews grounding out still three to nothing with the young guns poised to get a little bit more runs here in the bottom of the fourth but with buster. Posey's ken griffey junior and robinson cano all set to be up on. Fortunately for the young guns but have good jabbai. Christie matthiessen is he gets through the heart of the order with nothing. Scathed into in fact retires all three of those batters in order but with buster posey and ken griffey junior hitting deep fly balls then in the top half of the fifth inning. The old timers get a couple of hits right here. So yogi berra hits shallow fly out to right field. And honus wagner grounds out to third base and that brings up christie matthews. Who was the pitcher christy matthews able to single one to left field and then ty cobb hits a bloop single to right center field and christy mathewson is able to go from first to third with the hit king coming up but pete rose go six to four and grounds into a fielder's choice four hits for the old timers nothing acrossed three hits for the young guns. Three runs acrossed in the bottom half of the fifth. It goes one two three with a ride and chipper jones striking out in kershaw grounding out to first base in about and it's half of the sixth inning mickey mantle lou gehrig and babe ruth all yankee greats. They all ground out to second base shortstop and first base respectively. They then go to the bottom half of the sixth inning. Christie matthews draws our walks kershaw. Erm sorry not kershaw. He walks mike trout to lead off the inning. And then barry bonds grounds out to shortstop but mike. Trout has a little bit of wheels and is able to reach safely. Then mark maguire.

"Oh my gosh. Do i have something so special for you guys here so as you remember and as you may not know as you may have forgotten because there were fifty players that you were supposed to remember but i just put two teams from different lot much different. Baseball's i threw baseball styles of play. I threw deadball player. Eras in with guys from the fifties in the sixties. And then i threw guys from the seventies in with guys from twenty twenty like. This is a this series. Did not disappoint. So this is so i had got to pick a home field for each team and i picked the polo grounds for The old timers. Just because i feel like it's one of my more. It's one of the more famous like old stadiums. And then i picked that one for the old timers and for the young guns. I picked dodger stadium. Because i really almost went with the reason i went with dodger. Stadium was because. I feel like fenway park and wrigley field specifically. I didn't wanna pick between either of those. And i didn't want to go with like the newest ballpark either. Because i wanted to go something that probably all of these guys at least in this I wanted to go with a stadium. In which every player on the team would be semi familiar. Now you beira and Eddie mathews might not be as familiar with the polo grounds. As somebody like anti-kabul roger horns berry babe ruth but nobody in the young guns would have really known and everybody. Except for eddie mathews problem or eddie mathews is the only guy that may have played at dodger stadium on the old timers team. Just because the dodger stadium i believe opened in nineteen sixty and eddie mathews i nine hundred sixty one eddie mathews so in then this this game. This first game did not disappoint. You had chipper jones leading off chase utley at second base now. The reason that chase was at second base is because i accidentally put him in Instead of sammy's instead of robinson can no but the biggest reason that i decided to Go with that is because of Not i didn't go with chase elliott. I was moving guys around. Not everybody played the same game. Johnny bench in buster posey actually split a lot of time. It they they split every game. Actually i believe they did at least tried to do like that Albert pujols holes didn't play every game mark. Maguire didn't play every game. I think griffey might have played every game berry. Bonds may have played every game but for the most part. I was really trying to move guys around like actually even played. Pete rose at shortstop one game and he made three years. And then i didn't. I don't think. I put put rose back at shortstop but i did put them back at second because he was a decent second basement and that kind of thing but i was just trying to find ways to get some of these guys in like i put albert pools at third base even though his two thousand eight person is actually first baseman. I put him at third base. And because i wanted to a chance to play. Joey votto and our pools also in air there so i kind of moved back around in that kind of thing. I was also trying to get a rotation going For for these pitchers now. I know guys like cy young could have gone out and thrown every single one of these games. But i wanted it to be more fun than i wanted to get to. I wanted to see how the simulated would end up working out so game. One was a dogfight. I had pedro martinez versus cy young. On the mound you had chipper jones leading off for the young guns chase up the batting second. Mary bonds mark. Maguire sammy sosa. Ken griffey junior. Alex rodriguez john in johnny bench to round out the young guns now for the old timers. It was ty cobb leading off roger horns berry in second babe ruth and lou gehrig in their standard. Three and four ole stan. Usual five will eddie mathews. At third base at that yogi berra was batting seventh and honest wagner. Was the eighth hitter now. Unfortunately i'm not able to designate a d. h. So all of the pitchers are they have to bat regardless of the situation. Unfortunately i just don't know how to. I just didn't know how to added the h. And i don't think that i was able to for most of these. But what's really interesting. Is that out of all of these homerun hitters especially on the young guns. There weren't very many home runs in this game in these the series so game. One kind of went something like this. It was zero zero after the first inning. Cy young went one. Two three got a lineout. A fly out and fly out by chipper jones chase liam barry bonds pedro martinez got pop out. Got ty cobb out. Got robert horns buried. Groundout walked babe. Ruth and lou gehrig ended up striking out en su mark. Maguire gotta walk. Sammy sosa hit into a three six fielder's choice and he beat it out. Ken griffey junior ended up flying out to left Side deep centerfield and al trod rigas ended up grounding out still zero zero after the top to bottom to stan. Musial hits a fly ball double to right field. I hit the ball game for either side after that. Any mathews grounded. Out to first base. And young had to range from short across the second base bag to scoop it up. No way You're getting rowdy Jordan nuts, an infield base hit. For the left hand batters box get. He was basically running as that ball hopped for the first time and he was digging smelled base hit right out of the batter's box, and there was no way they were going to be able to throw him out. I only had a little bubble, but that bobble did not matter. By the time the ball was in his glove, Jordan was crossing the first base bag. And Er Tiner Allen now at the plate. He is over for two tonight. And the first pitch to Allen misses wide zone for ball. 13 runs on three hits. Mississippi State, no runs, no hits and two errors. For Vanderbilt, defending champs on the ropes in Omaha in the fifth. One out. Was fouled off the first base side one and one The count to Tanner, Alan. Tanner Allen, who Has struck up a little bit of an online relationship with All of Famer Chipper Jones. Everybody used to say he looked like Chipper Jones. Left hand hitting tenor Alan Embrace that he loves Chipper Jones. One of his favorites, as you might imagine, Growing up in the South, and Alan pokes this one through the right side for a base hit. Jordan will stop at second and the Bulldogs have something going and you know, Chipper Jones would appreciate that left hand swing as he pushed it through the right side. Chipper calls him as many me. The mini Me is a board for the first time tonight, two on nobody out in the fifth. Stance looks like Chipper Jones did from the left side and He is just a fine history. And you know, I'm not telling you anything for a guy with 3 83 coming into tonight, but He knows where. Pitches. He knows what he wants to do it. He doesn't try to take pitches and do it his way. He hits the ball words pitched Cameron James up two on nobody out in the fifth. Bulldogs. Open to break it open against Kumar Rocker in the bullpen back up again for Vandy, with Chris Mackel veins starting to throw once more. Not what was expected tonight. From one of the best to ever pitch in Omaha, Kumar Rocky One ball, No strikes to Cameron James and the fastball on the inside corner for strike to the right hander, one and one Rocker was working in between innings, throwing a blue rubber ball up against the cement wall in the runway of the dugout. Looked like he was trying to work on his release point. 11 off speed that caught the inside corner. Nice pitch from Raqqa there at 80 Miles an hour and it's one and two. Slider caught the corner and now James down. One ball two strikes two men on nobody out and the 12 pitch swing and a miss and James is out on strikes that strikeout number six for Rocker. "I could talk about the dignity in the class of hank. Aaron the man the you've been being for an hour easily but i'm a numbers guy and so let me tell you what i did. After hank aaron died i navigated over to his page on baseball reference. And i don't know. I just be held the majesty of this man's career and it literally gave me goosebumps. The more i looked the more. I realized he was beyond great. He was at some other level. He wound up with nearly thirty eight hundred hits. And that's a lot of freaking hits. It's a thousand more history chipper jones. It's two thousand more hits than mark. Maguire it's more hits than johnny bench and hank greenberg got combined and they're both in the hall of fame so i think about all those hints and i think about those seven hundred fifty five homeless because that's two hundred more homes than mickey mantle. Two hundred it's more homers than edgar martinez and duke snider hit combined. And they're both in the hall. But the more i dug i found other cool stuff to hank. Aaron had double digit home run seasons at age twenty and age. Forty here the only three players who did that. Willie mays ted williams hank aaron. That's a pretty good. Start on a mount rushmore. Would you say and all those home runs. He hit for all those years. This never struck out one hundred times. Then there's total basis crushes. Everyone who ever played in total bases six thousand eight hundred and fifty. Six total bases isn't just a record. It's seven hundred. Twenty two more than stan. Musial was the next closest player in history. If stan musial had hit another one hundred and eighty home runs. He still wouldn't catch i karen and total basis. That's a lot of total basis. That's incredible hitter hank. Aaron was for two decades. So is it possible to be one of the greatest players who ever lived and still the underrated. After looking over hank aaron's numbers. I think it is my name. Is david o'brien cover the braves for the athletic. And there's only two guys that i've ever felt this aura around them and that was mohammed ali and hank. Aaron and hank aaron. How's interviewed him. The first time at spring training. I remember approaching him and it was just You know i've done this for thirty years. And it was feeling. I've had unlike any other athlete that i've ever approached but then he immediately just he smiled and was so warm that that fear or intimidation just as melted away. And you could not believe that you were talking to this. Superstar is genuine icon living in atlanta for twenty years You can't overstate the importance of hank. Air to this city and this region the south. I grew up in the south and hank aaron being a black man being the greatest one of one of the two or three greatest players of all time and to do what he did in the south and then living in atlanta and seeing hank aaron you know mementos anchor and tributes and see his name on buildings and streets and that kind of thing. I would argue that. There is no athlete. That is more important to a city than hanker and wants to atlanta. He was such a huge part of how the culture of the south has changed. I mean this is a city where you feel fide of being so much black acceptance here. Thanks a huge huge part of that. He helped pave the way for all these other black athletes and entertainers wanna come here to be here. Brian jordan know it was an all star with atlanta. Bryant said that The reason that he chose atlanta was hank. Aaron and was a boy idle here. He said a black kid growing up playing baseball hank. Aaron was the guy but it was an opportunity for me to meet my hair. The hope the opportunity is given so many kids today. Amazing dominique wilkins. Said hank was a big reason. That he came here was one of the first people. It's probably one of the most instrumental guys into getting me here in atlanta. But one for god like hank. I wouldn't been here. Was hanker went to ted turner and said hey you need to get this kid by any means necessary. He said people should give the roses while they're alive and that he's glad to see him getting them now but he said hank should have been put on a pedestal decades ago and he was right What are the things that i remember him saying is that you gotta set example for people to come at you. And how do you do that. You do the right way you doing about being Have miltie you do it by just doing the right thing and the right thing a lot of times. It's hard and a lot of guys. Young guys don't know how to do the right thing. As far as how they present themselves to people and how they get back to people so to give back experts that i've learned over the years has become from erin trampling. We don't see that much of that anymore today. And he lived in the same house that he bought when he came here in. Nineteen sixty six from the

"Gascon and D A's in cities like San Francisco and Philadelphia, are recognizing how tools like sentencing enhancements institutionalized racism. They're basically saying, prosecute the crime that the person is actually on trial for Don't prosecute people for the neighborhoods in which they live for being black. Essentially, and that's where what enhancements really do, She says. Activists are pleased with gas scones, apparent commitment to racial equity and two police accountability. It's why voters influenced by a year of racial justice protests chose him, she says, and why he shouldn't bow to pressure. Just go home is beholden to the people who voted him in. In an interview, Gascon said his positions on justice have evolved since he was in L. A beat cop in the eighties, he said he is still haunted by the role he played in a system that's disproportionately locked up African Americans and Latinos. I understand that I was part of a larger system, but that still doesn't remove me from feeling responsible. And that is why I am so committed toe approaching community safety in a way that doesn't do the harm that I always say the majority of us who were in the system continued to do. He says he expected pushback from his prosecutors because many believe firmly in the power of tough sentencing. But he says tools like sentencing enhancements are a legacy of the tough on crime era. The eighties and nineties, prosecutors worked for generations without him. And they certainly did not feel that they were unethical because they were not trying to seek more incarceration. I look, I mean, this is a political game. He says he has no plans to change course. In fact, he hopes the size and cloud of his office will influence other prosecutors across the country. Can You Train Yourself to Become Ambidexterous?

"The. World is made up of about ninety percent of right handed people and ten percents, left-handed people folks who are truly ambidextrous, those who use their right and left hand equally well make up a negligible sliver of the population, but is ambidextrous, inherited or learned, and if learned, can it be learned as an adult? We spoke of email with Dr Sebastian. Auckland Berg a professor of psychology at Ruhr University and BOCOM Germany. He said a little bit of both. And this is determined by about twenty five percent, genetic factors and seventy five percent, non genetic factors like environmental influences. It clearly runs families, so it is somewhat inherited, but learning might also affect it I think amdex steady for a specific task. like hitting a tennis ball with the racket is possible, but full embiid extremity for all tasks is unlikely. Handedness being the skill in comfort, a person feels using one hand, or the other is considered a complex genetic trait, and since genes are involved hand, preference develops before a person's even born, but like other complex traits handedness including ambiguity extremity doesn't have a simple pattern of inheritance. Yes there is a greater chance. The children of left-handed parents will also be lefthanded than righties, but remember the chance of being a lefty is just ten percent overall, so most children have lefties are still right handed. An identical twins are more likely than non identical twins to both be either right or left handed, but many of both types do have opposite hand preferences, and that's before we even talk about whether a child's handedness is allowed to develop naturally or whether parents and teachers interfere. Hand dominance typically develops around age three and fully developed by age four to five, but it can be influenced by insisting a child uses their other hand, or by happenstance for example when he was four years old, former major league baseball pitcher Billy Wagner broke his right elbow and spent the summer in a cast. In his memoir Wachner victory recalls being a natural righty at the time and already mad for baseball, but for the next six weeks he threw only left-handed when the cast came off, he was in for a surprise when he tried throwing with his right, the ball went nowhere had lost not a strength of coordination for throwing with his right arm and gained it in his left. Wagner wrote. I was a natural righty then and still am I do everything right handed eat told tools right start lawnmower everything except pitch. Wagner wouldn't be considered ambidextrous though he's certainly managed to have an incredibly successful career working with his non dominant hand. Baseball is full of players who switch hit meaning. They hit equally well from either the left or right side, and are comfortable, facing left or right handed pitchers, some like hall of Famers, Eddie Murray Mickey Mantle and Chipper Jones were successful, but they like. Wagner weren't truly ambidextrous. Which is something? That's very difficult to do, but why the? Lindburg said headedness is something that is generated in the brain, not the hands as such. The half the brain contra lateral to the hand is better in controlling fine motor movements for example, the left brain hemisphere in right handers. The strength of this preference varies between individuals. Some people have a very strong preference for one hand, and resulting from that greater issue in using the other for specific tasks, so it's the brain that sets the barrier. But if the brains, that's the barrier. The brain can also remove it. Take the case of Billy McLaughlin. McLaughlin is an award winning guitarist known for a unique style of play, placing both hands on the Fredbord, Originally predominantly a right handed guitar player, but in the late nineteen nineties despite having a record at number seven on the billboard. He was struggling with control problems. He was missing notes when he played an experienced muscle spasms to the point that he was unable to perform. Finally in two thousand one McLaughlin was diagnosed with focal Dystonia, a movement disorder, causing muscles to contract involuntarily, though advised to find another career McLaughlin opted to teach himself to play left handed and he succeeded. So this begs the question. Can we teach ourselves to become ambidextrous as adults? A two thousand seven study found that as we age, we actually become more ambidextrous without even trying in part because the hands that we use more loses. Its dominance of the study was small. It included sixty participants all strongly right handed according to the Edinburgh handedness inventory, the participants completed various computerized dexterity tests, which included line tracing and aiming task and tapping the youngest group average age, twenty five years performed all the skills proficiently using their right hand, the Middle Age participants average age fifty years performed well using either hand on the gaming task while the two oldest groups average ages, seventy and eighty years performed just as well using either hand on all tasks except one. However overall performance appeared to decline with increasing age especially for the participants dominant hand, leading researchers to believe that quote, we become more ambidextrous as we get older because dominant hand loses its superior dexterity, and becomes more like are weaker hand. Some people have wondered whether attempting to become ambidextrous could strengthen the brain and potentially slow or fight the effects of aging or dementia Allen Berg said that's a myth, while it is true in general that brain training is a good idea when aging research has shown that what at strengthened is what is trained, so if I trained to write with my non dominant hand, this would affect the motor brain areas of the contra lateral half the brain, but not the areas involved in memory. Thus a specific memory training would make more sense in aging and dementia.

Should Dale Murphy be in the hall of fame?

"Straight. Talk brought to you by straight talk wireless, best phones, best networks, no contracts. So I'll said, so the guest we're efforting is right Thompson, who has a phenomenal piece in ESPN the magazine this week about Dale Murphy and how there's this whole generation, particularly in the southeast who believes domer- for should be in the hall of fame. The baseball hall of fame induction ceremony is Sunday. It'll be Jack Morris, Alan Trammell Vladimir Guerrero who mentioned earlier who would be wiffle ball player. Jim Thome who'd had a can o Jim Thome e who should be on everyone's all time. Looks like you should be on your softball league team Griffin, rip Chipper Jones. And Trevor Hoffman. And we're in the funny Marty when you get to certain age, it's like the guys you watch their entire career another. Yeah, it makes me feel really old. Like what those guys are going in. The hall of fame, right? Trevor Hoffman was the I was he liked the first real closer. I guess maybe Dennis Eckersley might have been the first real closer, but Hoffman was at the guy that I remember that came in and just therm nothing but smoke. Yeah, and but then like got crafty and he's of the group. He's probably the most is numbers are crazy, but of the group. He's the one that people seem to have the most reservations about, but he was there man like there was who else were the lease? Myth lease myth hall of fame, John rocker, John rocker. John rocker lasted a second, wasn't he closer though? He was starter was who's closer goose Gossage hit Googlers. Goose was the first goose was the first one of my life that was just was like just came. Just came in throwing smoke and. Yeah, but those closers were the best, but then but then you had the guys that were like great and then weren't so great. Like Bruce, Bruce suitor closer, Billy Wagner. Billy Wagner was the man son? Yeah, Billy Wagner grew up near me. He's from tazewell Virginia. Went to Fareham college. The little teeny, tiny Fareham college, of course, Moran Rivera, but goose was the one hour reduces the one that came along and I thought and then other ones, though there's some other ones that are scaping me right now that. When unique personalities when we look like maybe not kids. But as we were getting on towards high school college, they were some guys, I'll think of it as we go. I'm still working on joslin. Trying to think. Francisco rodriguez. I mean lease myth, I love Lee Smith lease. Myth is a really good call man. He's tall. Yeah, right. Eckersley was the guy probably though. Yeah, see. I'm so old armor when he was was a decent starter, but. Why didn't he? Yeah, you break. I want to Braise about small malts basically two different careers, which is wise in the hall of fame so. So bring up del Murphy because of the peace right Thompson road and full disclosure, I'm sitting in my office right now with a framed portrait of del Murphy, like standing in front of the American flag, holding his golden glove. And so, yeah, if you grew up in the part of the world we did and this is the super station era. And I, I knew so much about the cubs and the Braves, both because you watch them on television every day. You watch cubs in the morning. Watch brazen night. I went to a cubs cubs Braves game one time with the church youth groups that with girl, and I thought she would be impressed at my overwhelming knowledge of both teams and all scare. I mean, because if you watch both of those teams every single day all summer long, you know, every summer of youth it became will you know when Rafael Ramirez the plate and I'm going well, you know, he really struggles on so.
